Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Was talking just a moment ago about the hockey that
- 0:03Speaker 1: is about to get under way. Well, it's getting underway
- 0:05Speaker 1: next month. It sounds like it's going to be wonderful.
- 0:07Speaker 1: It's the Under fifteen National Hockey Championships. They're happening right
- 0:12Speaker 1: here in the Northern Territory.
- 0:15Speaker 2: Now joining me on the line to tell us a
- 0:17Speaker 2: little bit.
- 0:17Speaker 1: More about it is the operations manager from hockey here
- 0:21Speaker 1: in the Territory, Jody.
- 0:23Speaker 2: Let me just make sure I've got you through the desk.
- 0:24Speaker 2: Good morning, Jody, Hello, good morning. Great to have you
- 0:29Speaker 2: on the show.
- 0:30Speaker 1: Jody, tell us a little bit more about the under
- 0:32Speaker 1: fifteen National Championships.
- 0:35Speaker 2: When are they happening?
- 0:37Speaker 3: Yeah, thanks for having us. We have our national champ
- 0:40Speaker 3: coppening from the fifteenth to the twenty first of April.
- 0:44Speaker 3: It's really exciting for us. It's our first time since
- 0:46Speaker 3: twenty fifteen where we hosted the under thirteens and ahl
- 0:50Speaker 3: men's National Championships. So it's been a long time coming
- 0:53Speaker 3: and it's really really exciting for our kids to be
- 0:56Speaker 3: able to play against some of the best other states
- 1:01Speaker 3: and territories in our hometown. We've got seventeen teams come
- 1:04Speaker 3: in to compete here.
- 1:06Speaker 2: Wow, I reckon, this sounds wonderful.
- 1:09Speaker 1: I love seeing the kids sport happening here in the territory,
- 1:12Speaker 1: particularly when you've got students kids coming from right around Australia.
- 1:19Speaker 3: Yeah, exactly right, it's really exciting. I mean, they're the
- 1:22Speaker 3: best of the best of fifteen year olds. So we'll
- 1:25Speaker 3: have from day one on the Saturday, we'll have two matches.
- 1:29Speaker 3: Each team will play two matches a day from the
- 1:31Speaker 3: Saturday and Sunday, and then we'll play off all the
- 1:33Speaker 3: way down to the Friday when we go for our
- 1:34Speaker 3: Grand Final. It's a free event, so anyone can come
- 1:38Speaker 3: and attend and have a look at hockey and what
- 1:39Speaker 3: it's all about. Exciting things. We start our season sort
- 1:43Speaker 3: of the weekend after, so they're going to be pumped
- 1:45Speaker 3: after watching all of the best of the best come
- 1:48Speaker 3: and play on our hometown.
- 1:49Speaker 2: How wonderful, Jodie.
- 1:51Speaker 1: I am very often at athletics just next door and
- 1:54Speaker 1: quite often running around Marara and see just how many
- 1:59Speaker 1: people are heading into hockey. It's clearly a very popular
- 2:01Speaker 1: sport in the Northern Territory and I'm assuming that we'll
- 2:05Speaker 1: have a fantastic territory team to compete in the Under
- 2:08Speaker 1: fifteen Championships.
- 2:10Speaker 3: Absolutely, so we've got two teams. We've got a full
- 2:13Speaker 3: girls team and a full boys team competing. And luckily
- 2:17Speaker 3: we've pushed for the draw so that we can have
- 2:19Speaker 3: our home kids playing a little bit later. So maybe
- 2:21Speaker 3: I've can finish work and come and watch our kids play,
- 2:24Speaker 3: especially on the Saturday and the Sunday when it's when
- 2:26Speaker 3: you know people aren't working, will be good to get
- 2:28Speaker 3: as many people down to support our local kids.
- 2:31Speaker 1: How many people are you expecting to watch to come along? Firstly,
- 2:36Speaker 1: I suppose as part of the teams and they're associated
- 2:39Speaker 1: managers and people traveling with them, and then sort of
- 2:43Speaker 1: you know, just part of this carnival.
- 2:46Speaker 3: Yes, massive, we should have over two thousand people around
- 2:49Speaker 3: and about, so we'll have you know, most teams have
- 2:51Speaker 3: about seventeen players, and then they've also got managers and
- 2:54Speaker 3: coaches and family come so it's a big event for
- 2:57Speaker 3: the territory. And obviously then they're all saying around nice
- 3:01Speaker 3: and close to Maura and we've got rest to days
- 3:03Speaker 3: where they'll be out and about visiting different things from
- 3:06Speaker 3: the territory.
- 3:07Speaker 1: How awesome that's like, it's actually wonderful for the Northern
- 3:10Speaker 1: Territory to have two thousand people visiting for a carnival,
- 3:14Speaker 1: for a sports carnival.
- 3:16Speaker 2: I love talking about, you.
- 3:18Speaker 1: Know, the great things that junior sport does in so
- 3:20Speaker 1: many ways, but even when you look at it from
- 3:22Speaker 1: that economic perspective and what it's doing for the Northern Territory,
- 3:25Speaker 1: it's really great.
- 3:27Speaker 3: Exactly right, Yeah, that's right, it's really exciting. We've got
- 3:30Speaker 3: we've got our captain's call on the day before the
- 3:32Speaker 3: tournament starts, and we've been lucky enough to get a
- 3:35Speaker 3: little crocodiles to come and take some photos.
- 3:37Speaker 2: With Oh cool, how awesome?
- 3:41Speaker 1: Well, I reckon it sounds like it's going to be wonderful.
- 3:43Speaker 1: I'll probably catch a bit of the action, I reckon,
- 3:46Speaker 1: because I'm always.
- 3:47Speaker 2: There at Marara.
- 3:48Speaker 1: Just for anybody listening who is maybe keen to find
- 3:51Speaker 1: out a bit more to come along and cheer on
- 3:54Speaker 1: our territorians.
- 3:55Speaker 2: Where can they head to?
- 3:56Speaker 1: Is there an open sort of hockey page or somewhere
- 3:59Speaker 1: where they can get a bit further detail if they
- 4:01Speaker 1: are kin.
- 4:03Speaker 3: Yeah, So once the drawers finalise, we'll post it up
- 4:05Speaker 3: on our website, which is Hockey NT and but we'll
- 4:08Speaker 3: also it will also be on the Hockey Australia website
- 4:11Speaker 3: as well as our social media, so we'll try and
- 4:14Speaker 3: keep everyone up to date with what's happening. The other
- 4:16Speaker 3: one that they're doing as well is all of the
- 4:18Speaker 3: games live streams. That's another another good opportunity there to
- 4:22Speaker 3: tap in if you can't make it down.
- 4:24Speaker 2: Yeah, and we.
- 4:25Speaker 1: Have got like, we've actually got some awesome hockey players
- 4:27Speaker 1: that have come from the Northern Territory as well, Olympians
- 4:30Speaker 1: and everything.
- 4:32Speaker 3: Correct. Well, it's really big for us as well because
- 4:35Speaker 3: Jeremy Haywood was named captain for the fih Pro League
- 4:39Speaker 3: series in Hobart not that long ago, and he obviously
- 4:42Speaker 3: comes from a club here in Darwin and it's really
- 4:46Speaker 3: exciting for us to have a captain as part of
- 4:49Speaker 3: the Australian team. So it's quite inspiring obviously for our
- 4:53Speaker 3: kids that are playing here locally.
- 4:54Speaker 2: Yeah, it really is.
- 4:56Speaker 1: You know. I always think it's so important to you know,
- 4:59Speaker 1: to be able to see those others that have done
- 5:01Speaker 1: really well before you, so you've got something to look
- 5:04Speaker 1: up to.
- 5:05Speaker 3: Correct.
- 5:06Speaker 1: Absolutely, Jody, lovely to talk to you this morning. Thanks
- 5:09Speaker 1: so much for coming on and telling us a little
- 5:11Speaker 1: bit more about the nationals happening, and also you know,
- 5:14Speaker 1: for people to hear about the wonderful kids that we've
- 5:16Speaker 1: got in the territory that are doing some great stuff.
- 5:18Speaker 1: So I think it's really awesome to hear from you today.
- 5:23Speaker 3: Excellent. Thanks for having us look forward to seeing here
- 5:25Speaker 3: from the fifteenth, twenty first of a book here at
- 5:27Speaker 3: our hockey centimes.
- 5:28Speaker 2: It sounds good.
- 5:29Speaker 1: We might even try and catch up with you again
- 5:30Speaker 1: before then, Jody, thank.
- 5:32Speaker 2: You so much for your time. Thank you
