Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome back to the Excel Center, Mike chris Pino, joined
- 0:02Speaker 1: by Luke Murray, you kind assistant. After the overtime win
- 0:05Speaker 1: by the Huskies, it was a thriller. Always good to
- 0:08Speaker 1: win thrillers, but there were some very anxious moments in
- 0:12Speaker 1: that game.
- 0:12Speaker 2: There really were.
- 0:13Speaker 3: I mean, we get down five with about four minutes
- 0:15Speaker 3: to go, some amazing shot making by Xavier and you know, Solo,
- 0:19Speaker 3: who hadn't played great to that point, you know, comes
- 0:21Speaker 3: up with some big shots. I think he went on
- 0:23Speaker 3: a little eight to zero run himself, or at least
- 0:25Speaker 3: scored eight of the points in that run to get
- 0:27Speaker 3: us back in front.
- 0:29Speaker 2: But yeah, it was tight there.
- 0:30Speaker 1: What does it mean for a guy like him? Do
- 0:32Speaker 1: you think he's a sophomore now he's playing more Obviously
- 0:34Speaker 1: he's an important player a lot of minutes. Then he
- 0:37Speaker 1: gets in a game like this and he does that.
- 0:40Speaker 1: Is that going to help him? Is that going to
- 0:41Speaker 1: boost his confidence now when he gets in crunch time
- 0:44Speaker 1: and going down the stretch?
- 0:45Speaker 2: I'm sure.
- 0:45Speaker 3: I mean last season, you know, he started the first
- 0:47Speaker 3: Big East game of the season and then didn't start
- 0:49Speaker 3: again the rest of the year, you know, and I
- 0:51Speaker 3: think for him to be able to go into big,
- 0:53Speaker 3: big East play against a really good team and work
- 0:55Speaker 3: through some adversity. You know, honestly, didn't get off to
- 0:57Speaker 3: a very good start to the game, had some defense,
- 1:00Speaker 3: some mischews, wasn't playing great offensively, and to stay with
- 1:03Speaker 3: it and finish the way that he did, I think
- 1:04Speaker 3: that'll help him big time.
- 1:05Speaker 1: Yeah, Terris Reed Junior again another double doubles. It's almost
- 1:09Speaker 1: automatic these days. We have twenty points and again he
- 1:12Speaker 1: gets thirteen boards. How important is that guy right now?
- 1:16Speaker 1: With Samson? Obviously, if he can come back quickly, that'll
- 1:18Speaker 1: be great, but right now, Reid had this, he started
- 1:21Speaker 1: the ball game. He had to make some stuff happen.
- 1:23Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean he was hugely important.
- 1:24Speaker 3: I mean obviously, like you mentioned, especially with Sampson out
- 1:27Speaker 3: of the game, for him to step up the way
- 1:29Speaker 3: that he did. You know, twenty points, thirteen rebounds, four
- 1:31Speaker 3: block shots to go six or six from the line,
- 1:33Speaker 3: you know, make some crucial ones late. You know, he
- 1:35Speaker 3: was terrific for us today, and that's the kind of
- 1:37Speaker 3: guy that we need the rest of the way.
- 1:39Speaker 1: Alex Caravan in overtime, I mean, that's what you expect
- 1:42Speaker 1: from a guy who's wearing two rings.
- 1:44Speaker 2: You have to have it though, right, You had to
- 1:46Speaker 2: have it. You had to have it.
- 1:47Speaker 3: I mean, that first shot of overtime to put us
- 1:49Speaker 3: up three was the first time you were kind of
- 1:51Speaker 3: able to breathe a little bit in.
- 1:52Speaker 2: Probably fifteen or twenty minutes of real time. So that
- 1:55Speaker 2: was big.
- 1:56Speaker 3: You know, made a couple other big plays down the
- 1:58Speaker 3: stretch as well. You know, again, he was the kind
- 2:00Speaker 3: of recipient of some unfortunate luck a couple of times
- 2:02Speaker 3: guarding a guy like Maddox who made some really hard
- 2:04Speaker 3: shots off the dribble. But credit to him for staying
- 2:07Speaker 3: with and kind of having that championship answer.
- 2:09Speaker 1: Yeah, thirteen for twenty four. I know, you guys will
- 2:11Speaker 1: go back there and you'll look at these numbers and
- 2:13Speaker 1: you'll say, thirteen three pointers Xavier made. That's not good.
- 2:17Speaker 1: That cannot happen. How do you fix that? How do
- 2:19Speaker 1: you get better in that category? Look like you were
- 2:21Speaker 1: improving last couple of games, and then this these guys
- 2:24Speaker 1: just go nuts tonight.
- 2:25Speaker 2: Yeah. I don't know.
- 2:26Speaker 3: I mean, that's gonna We're gonna have to go back
- 2:27Speaker 3: and watch the film.
- 2:28Speaker 2: I thought.
- 2:28Speaker 3: Defensively, to start the game, we got off to a
- 2:30Speaker 3: pretty good start, you know. I think going into the
- 2:31Speaker 3: first media timeout they were like four for fourteen from
- 2:34Speaker 3: the field or something like that.
- 2:35Speaker 2: That's right.
- 2:36Speaker 3: But then they got incredibly hot. I mean that second
- 2:38Speaker 3: half they shot seventy percent from the field.
- 2:39Speaker 2: They shot eighty percent from three.
- 2:41Speaker 1: Uh.
- 2:41Speaker 3: You know, Dante Maddox, who's a good player but was
- 2:43Speaker 3: shooting thirty percent from three for the season and averaging
- 2:46Speaker 3: five points a game, is making off the dribble, contested
- 2:49Speaker 3: threes with people.
- 2:50Speaker 2: Hanging on him. You know.
- 2:51Speaker 3: So again, I'm gonna have to go back and watch
- 2:53Speaker 3: the tape, but I think that there was some remarkable
- 2:55Speaker 3: shot making on the part of Xavier and then a
- 2:57Speaker 3: couple of breakdowns, you know, defensively, some things that you know,
- 2:59Speaker 3: we had that we didn't do a good enough job
- 3:01Speaker 3: of executing.
- 3:02Speaker 1: There was a weird end to regulation, wasn't it, well,
- 3:04Speaker 1: going to the free throw line on plays away from
- 3:07Speaker 1: the ball. Wouldn't players going to the rim getting fouled? Yeah,
- 3:10Speaker 1: that was a strange ending to that game.
- 3:11Speaker 3: Regulation, it was, you know, I think at the time
- 3:14Speaker 3: there was some frustration, but you know, when you think
- 3:16Speaker 3: about it, with the way that they were shooting the
- 3:18Speaker 3: ball from three. You know, there's kind of like this
- 3:20Speaker 3: new age sort of way of thinking about it that
- 3:22Speaker 3: you would foul and put him on the line, and
- 3:23Speaker 3: it's like, okay, we get the last shot. You know,
- 3:25Speaker 3: you're not going to have an opportunity to make a
- 3:27Speaker 3: three point shot when you're as hot as you are
- 3:28Speaker 3: and have the ball in your hands, provided you're going
- 3:31Speaker 3: to rebound the ball. You know you're going to get
- 3:32Speaker 3: the ball back in our hands, which we did. And honestly,
- 3:35Speaker 3: I thought there was some contact on Liam's drive for sure,
- 3:37Speaker 3: which could have ended the game that way, but not
- 3:40Speaker 3: exactly the finish that we were looking for down the stretch,
- 3:42Speaker 3: but obviously showed a lot of fortituding overtime.
- 3:44Speaker 1: Yeah, wins and wins. A win Liam McNeely got followed
- 3:47Speaker 1: trouble issues and you know how to play through that.
- 3:49Speaker 1: He only played twenty minutes. But he continues to do
- 3:52Speaker 1: stuff right. I mean, makes all five of his free throws,
- 3:55Speaker 1: he gets Forrest's no turnovers. He just seems to be
- 3:58Speaker 1: able to come up with stuff when he needs it.
- 4:00Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean he's an excellent player, you know, I know,
- 4:01Speaker 3: one game plus minuses are sometimes not totally indicative of
- 4:04Speaker 3: the story. But he was a plus thirteen and the
- 4:06Speaker 3: twenty minutes that he played, I thought he was terrific.
- 4:09Speaker 2: You know.
- 4:09Speaker 3: If he wasn't in foul trouble, I think he has
- 4:11Speaker 3: an even bigger impact on the game. But you know,
- 4:13Speaker 3: you mentioned fourteen points, making some big shots down the stretch,
- 4:16Speaker 3: and I thought some excellent passing, you know, a couple
- 4:18Speaker 3: of times found terras, you know, for some big time finishes.
- 4:21Speaker 2: Around the rim. So yeah, Liams, Liam's on the move.
- 4:23Speaker 1: Yeah, this year's team is Luke Marie with us. It's
- 4:27Speaker 1: it's gonna be like a little bit of everything. We
- 4:29Speaker 1: got to find a way every night. It's fun to watch.
- 4:31Speaker 1: I'm sure it gives you sleepless nights. But you know
- 4:34Speaker 1: what I'm saying, it's like a different deal here. It's
- 4:36Speaker 1: not like you got him roll into town and put
- 4:39Speaker 1: ninety on the board and win. It's not going to
- 4:42Speaker 1: be that easy, is it.
- 4:43Speaker 2: No, it's not. It's not.
- 4:44Speaker 3: You know, it's a different team than last year's team.
- 4:45Speaker 3: But it's an exciting team to be a part of,
- 4:47Speaker 3: you know, because everybody's stepping up in their own ways.
- 4:49Speaker 3: I mean, even the guys that didn't really make a
- 4:51Speaker 3: mark on the stat sheet.
- 4:52Speaker 2: As far as scoring is concerned.
- 4:53Speaker 3: You know, the forty minutes from Jaden Ross and Jalen
- 4:56Speaker 3: Stewart I thought were really good minutes. You know, Jay
- 4:57Speaker 3: Stu got a backcut layup, but I thought he he
- 4:59Speaker 3: helped to us. Jayden Ross, you know, played excellent defense
- 5:03Speaker 3: on Maddox and on Conwell at times. So yeah, those
- 5:06Speaker 3: guys are helping us, and we're excited about kind of
- 5:08Speaker 3: the direction that we're heading in.
- 5:09Speaker 1: All right, enjoy this one, coach, And uh, that's on
- 5:12Speaker 1: the butler.
- 5:12Speaker 2: I guess on the butler. Let's go practice tomorrow.
- 5:15Speaker 1: Yeah, practice tomorrow, all right, enjoy it tonight at least
- 5:19Speaker 1: I'll be watching butler.
- 5:21Speaker 2: I know you will see.
- 5:22Speaker 1: All right, that's Luke Murray with us on the post game.
- 5:24Speaker 1: We appreciate him and
