- 0:00Chapter 10 of Hosea, Dear God, please be with us and give us
- 0:05wisdom and insight from the Holy Spirit as we read through these
- 0:08words and apply them to our lives in Jesus name, Amen.
- 0:14Israel was a spreading vine. He brought forth fruit for
- 0:17himself. As his fruit increased, he built
- 0:20more altars. As his land prospered, He
- 0:23adorned his sacred stones. So this is talking about Israel
- 0:28expanding, being the spreading vine and having a lot of fruit,
- 0:33and the fruit was increasing and altars were being built and the
- 0:38land was prospering and he was adorning the sacred stones.
- 0:44And that's kind of interesting where that is going.
- 0:49Verse 2, it says their heart is deceitful and now they must bear
- 0:55their guilt. So something that we do see is
- 0:58that Israel was not turned towards God, yet they were
- 1:03prosperous. And this, as we will see, brings
- 1:07about a sense of pride where God is forgotten and it becomes look
- 1:14what I've done as opposed to look at what God's done through
- 1:17me. And humility has gone by the
- 1:21wayside. It's non existent when somebody
- 1:24starts thinking I did this, I did that and becomes self
- 1:29confident in a way that's prideful, in a way that doesn't
- 1:34acknowledge God, that doesn't humble ourselves.
- 1:37And pride is one of those things that God hates.
- 1:40So it says their heart is deceitful, and now they must
- 1:45bear their guilt. The Lord will demolish their
- 1:49altars and destroy their sacred stones.
- 1:53Then they will say we have no king because we did not Revere
- 1:57the Lord. So he's prophesying that they
- 2:01will realize that they don't have a king because they didn't
- 2:06Revere the Lord, They didn't respect the Lord, They were far
- 2:09from the Lord. And we have to remember that God
- 2:12appoints kings. God appoints leaders.
- 2:16We can say, oh, well, there's bad leaders.
- 2:18God appoint those. He allowed that to happen.
- 2:21The thing is, God gives all of us free will.
- 2:25So he will let our free will proceed whatever we decide, He
- 2:32lets it proceed. But ultimately, he uses it for
- 2:37his ultimate purpose, His ultimate plan.
- 2:41His ultimate plan is to bring people into His Kingdom.
- 2:45Now, some will reject God and not make it there, but others
- 2:49will make it there. And so God can use evil to bring
- 2:53about good. And so that's why the
- 2:58understanding of free will is so important that when we see evil,
- 3:03it's because of free will. And verse 2 says the heart is
- 3:09deceitful. And this is, there's there's
- 3:12another place in Scripture where it says that also.
- 3:15It's in Jeremiah chapter 17, verse 9 about the heart being
- 3:19deceitful. And so we have to think that,
- 3:23you know, we can deceive ourselves by thinking that we're
- 3:26good. And if the heart is deceitful,
- 3:30the heart lies to us. So again, if we think like we're
- 3:34going to do things based on our feelings, we can deceive
- 3:37ourselves. So we can't really trust our
- 3:41feelings all the way. We have to have a connection
- 3:46with God and to have intuition that comes from God.
- 3:50That I believe is often the Holy Spirit when it aligns with God's
- 3:55words, with what God says is good and what God says is evil.
- 3:59We sometimes when we feel guilt, that's something we wouldn't put
- 4:02on ourselves, feeling guilt. And if we feel guilt about not
- 4:07being close to God or about sinning, we can know that that's
- 4:11probably the prompting from the Holy Spirit to turn to God to
- 4:16turn away from. And that.
- 4:18So whenever we think about something that we know is a good
- 4:23thing and we know we should do it, but we don't do it and then
- 4:28we kind of feel bad about it, I think that's God kind of nudging
- 4:31us to change that in your life. Stop doing that, you know, turn
- 4:37to me. Get gain the power from the Holy
- 4:41Spirit to overcome those things. Let the Holy Spirit, what the
- 4:46church calls the word, sanctify. Let the Holy Spirit change us as
- 4:51we go along in life to be more like what God intended us for us
- 4:56to be. And God intended us.
- 4:58He says be holy because I am holy.
- 5:03So he wants us to be holy and we have to get rid of sin in order
- 5:09to be holy. So little by little the Holy
- 5:12Spirit will begin to change us, to make us where we desire to be
- 5:19more holy. And that doesn't come naturally
- 5:22because like this says, the heart is deceitful.
- 5:24We are natural born sinners. So that's something that only
- 5:27the Holy Spirit does within us. OK, then they will say we have
- 5:32no kings. So we were talking about the
- 5:34kings being in place and even in the times of Israel, in fact,
- 5:38those who were rebellious to God and didn't have the anointed
- 5:41king that God chose, they were the 10 tribes, actually 10
- 5:46tribes of Israel gathered together and they set up their
- 5:51own place separate from Jerusalem.
- 5:54God already had a worship place established in Jerusalem, but
- 5:58then they chose another area. They went to Samaria and that's
- 6:02where the Samaritans come from, which is interesting because we
- 6:06hear about the Samaritans in the New Testament a lot.
- 6:09And that's where really it was the area of the 10 tribes of
- 6:12Israel. That's where they inhabited.
- 6:15That's where they set up their their capital, their place of
- 6:20worship and so forth. So, but even if we had a king,
- 6:27what could he do for us? They make so then talking about
- 6:31the kings, they make many promises, take false oaths and
- 6:34make agreements. Therefore lawsuits spring up.
- 6:39It's kind of interesting just showing how fallible all
- 6:42leadership is. Like, we really shouldn't
- 6:46criticize the individual leaders.
- 6:52I guess that's a hard thing to say, but I mean, we shouldn't
- 6:55really be in judgement of them because we all do things that
- 7:01are less desirable that God doesn't really want us to do.
- 7:06So whenever we are placing judgement on somebody else, on
- 7:10what their actions do, we can probably, if we look closely, we
- 7:14can probably find just as many things wrong with us that we are
- 7:18not living the way God wants us to live.
- 7:21And so because of all this, bad things do happen.
- 7:25So we see leaders today who make many promises, who, you know,
- 7:31take false oaths. They say they're going to do
- 7:34something and they don't. They make agreements and then
- 7:37lawsuits spring up because they don't adhere to them.
- 7:40So that that's just happens in history, throughout history.
- 7:44And that's what the Bible's telling us.
- 7:47You know, that's what kings do. That's what's happened.
- 7:51Like like poisonous weeds in a plowed field.
- 7:54The people who live in Samaria fear for the calf idol of Beth
- 8:00Avon. That's showing their idolatry.
- 8:02The calf idol. Actually, the study Bible says
- 8:06that what was the calf idol? A huge calf idol had been
- 8:09erected by Jeroboam, the first at Bethel or Beth Avon.
- 8:15It was an idol resembling the golden calf the Israelites had
- 8:20worshipped at Mount Sinai from Exodus.
- 8:24Isn't that interesting? You would think that after they
- 8:27knew the history. This is when God gave Moses the
- 8:3110 commandments and then when he came down with the 10
- 8:34commandments, he found that just in the period of time Moses was
- 8:38on the mountain for like 40 days, they had already set up,
- 8:42they had melted gold like jewelry and formed this golden
- 8:45calf and began worshipping it in the short time, the 40 days, you
- 8:49know, little over a month that Moses had been gone and this is
- 8:53what they were doing. So it didn't didn't go well.
- 8:57Then they should have known that if they would have read the OR
- 9:03maybe not read at that time. Maybe it was just, I don't know
- 9:06if it was written down or if it was just given orally, but you
- 9:09know, if they would have had that history, which they did
- 9:11have the history, then why would they do this?
- 9:14Again, it doesn't really make sense.
- 9:16But history repeats itself and often history repeats itself
- 9:20because probably the national, the natural inclination to sin
- 9:25that we have. So if we don't read about it and
- 9:29realize we need to redirect what we're doing because look at this
- 9:33in history, this is what happened after they did that.
- 9:37And we could look at that today too, and alley it to our own
- 9:40world. O its people will mourn over it,
- 9:45talking about the calf idol, and so will will its idolatrous
- 9:49priest, those who had rejoiced over its splendor.
- 9:53Because it is taken from them into exile.
- 9:57It will be carried to Assyria, a tribute for the great king.
- 10:02Ephraim will be disgraced. Israel will be ashamed of its
- 10:06foreign alliances. Samaria's king will be
- 10:10destroyed. Now Hosea is talking about this
- 10:15at the very last reigning king. I mean, he's, he's warning
- 10:20Israel, the king of Israel. Remember, there's 2 kings that
- 10:23are set up that cover, that cover the area.
- 10:26That's really the Israelites, but it's the 10 tribes and
- 10:29that's called Israel. And then the 2 tribes, Judah and
- 10:33Benjamin, are called Judah, so Samaria's king now that's the
- 10:40capital of Israel. The 10 tribes will be destroyed,
- 10:44swept away like a twig on the surface of the waters.
- 10:48The high places of wickedness will be destroyed.
- 10:51It is the sin of Israel. Thorns and thistles will grow up
- 10:56and cover their altars. Then they will say to the
- 10:59mountains cover us and to the hills fall on us.
- 11:04When I read that it made me think about Revelation 616 when
- 11:10Jesus returns and they say to the they go into the caves and
- 11:16the mountains and they say cover us, you know, fall on us to keep
- 11:20us from the wrath of God that's coming.
- 11:23And this is also mentioned in Luke chapter 23 verse 30.
- 11:27So again, history repeats itself and it's either repeating, I
- 11:33don't know if if this actually ever happened or it's a
- 11:36reference to the end times when they say to the mountains cover
- 11:40us into the hills fall on us because that's what Revelation
- 11:43is talking about. When Jesus actually returns.
- 11:46I don't know if this happened before Jesus returned returns or
- 11:53if it's, you know, a prophecy that far out into the future,
- 11:57even though this was written so long ago like in the seven
- 12:01hundreds BC OK, going back to Scripture, since the days of
- 12:06Gibeah you have sinned Israel and there you have remained.
- 12:12Will not war again overtake the evildoers in Gibeah.
- 12:18So what happened in the days of Gibeah, a travelling Levite,
- 12:22spending the night in Gibeah? He had yielded to a gang of
- 12:26sexual perverts who raped, beat and murdered his concubine.
- 12:33And that's found in Judges chapter 19, verses 20 through
- 12:3630. Hosea declared that the entire
- 12:40nation had sunk to the same depths of depravity.
- 12:44He also implied that their punishment would be certain and
- 12:48just and it did happen because the the Last King of Israel, I
- 12:55think it fell like in 722 BC. So if he, you know, he was maybe
- 13:025 years before somewhere around there.
- 13:05Just approximate. I'm just giving round numbers.
- 13:07But you know five years prior to that happening.
- 13:11Hosea is giving this morning when I it's so it's talking
- 13:16about since the days of Gibeah you have sinned Israel and there
- 13:19you have remained will not war again overtake the evildoers and
- 13:22Gibeah when I please I will punish them.
- 13:26Nations will be gathered against them.
- 13:29Now again, this is what happens in the end times, that nations
- 13:32gather around them and that's when God, when Jesus returns and
- 13:38wrath is poured out. So when I please, I will punish
- 13:42them. Nations will be gathered against
- 13:45them to put them in bonds for their double sin.
- 13:50And the study Bible says what was Israel's double sin?
- 13:53Israel sinned doubly in that the people turned from God and
- 13:58turned to the idol worship. So they went away from God,
- 14:03which was one sin. Then they went to a false God,
- 14:06which was another sin. Ephraim is a trained heifer that
- 14:10loves to thresh. So I will put a yoke on her fair
- 14:14neck. I will drive Ephraim.
- 14:16Judah must plow and Jacob must break up the ground.
- 14:22Sow righteousness for yourselves.
- 14:25Reap the fruit of unfailing love.
- 14:29So then it starts talking about righteousness and how that
- 14:32brings unfailing love. And that's something we can
- 14:35definitely learn from if we prepare ourselves, if we, you
- 14:42know, yield to the Holy Spirit's prompting to be righteous
- 14:46because that's what God wants. When we get that, that, I don't
- 14:52know that intuition, if you want to call it that, from the Holy
- 14:56Spirit that guides us maybe in a way we weren't planning on
- 15:00doing, but we know that it's the right thing to do.
- 15:03And when we yield to that and we do what we know is right versus
- 15:09what we want to do, then that's yielding to the Holy Spirit.
- 15:13And it says here to reap the fruit of unfailing love like us
- 15:18obeying God shows him that we love him.
- 15:23He always loves us. He loves us.
- 15:26He doesn't love the sin, but He loves us.
- 15:30It's just that we don't always show that back to Him.
- 15:33And the way we show it is by obeying His commandments.
- 15:37So then it says, so righteousness for yourselves.
- 15:39Reap the fruit of unfailing love, and break up your unplowed
- 15:43ground. For it is time to seek the Lord
- 15:48until He comes. Now I thought that was really
- 15:50interesting. That's verse 12.
- 15:52For it is time to seek the Lord until He comes.
- 15:57When does God come? Well, there's, you know, either
- 16:01this was in the seven, the early 700 BC.
- 16:08So Jesus was eventually going to come the first time his birth,
- 16:13but then there's also the second coming.
- 16:15So I don't know, it could mean one, it could mean both of those
- 16:19times, but to seek the Lord until he comes.
- 16:23So just to remain close to God, that's, that's something that
- 16:27we, it applies to us as well prior to the second coming of
- 16:32Jesus, that we are prepared that we stay close to God and that we
- 16:38seek him. So for it is time to seek the
- 16:42Lord until he comes and showers his righteousness on you.
- 16:46But you have planted wickedness, you have reaped evil, you have
- 16:52eaten the fruit of deception, just like Adam and Eve, like
- 16:57they ate the fruit and it was deception.
- 17:01It was, you know, Satan telling them that, hey, if you do this,
- 17:07you'll be just like God. He just doesn't want you to do
- 17:09that. He doesn't want you to become
- 17:11like him. And so they bought it.
- 17:14They bought the deception and quote ate the fruit.
- 17:17And that's what it's, you know, this is what evil does.
- 17:23Evil tries to get us to believe things that are not true and to
- 17:28fall to separate us from God when we do the things that evil
- 17:34deceives us with. Because you have depended on
- 17:39your own strength and on your many warriors, the roar of
- 17:43battle will rise against your people so that all your
- 17:46fortresses will be devastated. Now that's interesting because
- 17:50because you depended on your own strength, that's pride.
- 17:53God hates pride. And, you know, if they would
- 17:57turn to God, remember, even when they were outnumbered, they
- 18:01would win wars because they had turned to God.
- 18:04But here they're depending on their own strength.
- 18:07And that's when the roar of battle will rise against the
- 18:10people. You know, they'll be defeated.
- 18:12That's why he was telling Israel, you're going to be
- 18:14defeated by the Assyrians. They're going to take you over.
- 18:18And did they believe? Did they heed to it?
- 18:21They didn't listen to the words of Hosea because it happened
- 18:26because Hosea was saying turn to God, but nobody did.
- 18:29He was warning them. And it says throughout Scripture
- 18:32how God used these prophets to warn people, and he does that
- 18:35with us too. We have lots of little warnings
- 18:38along in our life and there are times where we just don't listen
- 18:40to God. We don't want to, so we don't
- 18:42listen to them. But then things get worse.
- 18:45It says God disciplines his children, so if we're going down
- 18:50the wrong path, he's going to do something, allow something in
- 18:54our life, you know, let things happen so that we hopefully turn
- 19:00to him. Sometimes when bad things
- 19:03happen, people turn away from God, but other times people turn
- 19:07to God as a place of refuge. And that really is the
- 19:10indication of someone's heart. You're either going to turn to
- 19:13God because you love him and you want to be protected and you
- 19:17turn to him like a father, or you turn away from him because
- 19:21you're rejecting him and you don't believe in his power that
- 19:26he can make it all better. And that's just kind of an
- 19:30interesting way to think of it, that we turn to God.
- 19:33It's like a like our dad, like he's our father.
- 19:38So the roar of the battle will rise against your people so that
- 19:41all your fortresses will be devastated, as Shellman
- 19:43devastated Beth Arable on the day of battle when mothers were
- 19:47dashed to the ground with their children.
- 19:50So it will happen to you, Bethel, because your wickedness
- 19:56is great. When the when that day dawns,
- 20:00the king of Israel will be completely destroyed.
- 20:04Well, that is Hoshaya. Was the king of Israel and Hosea
- 20:09was the prophet. It's kind of interesting that
- 20:11there were their names are kind of similar, just an H added and
- 20:16that's the the king. That was the King's name.
- 20:19So I will read the questions and answers and then we'll probably
- 20:21just wrap up this chapter. When did Israel stop having
- 20:25kings? The phrase we have no king
- 20:27anticipated the Assyrian conquest of the northern
- 20:31Kingdom, which brought Israel's monarchy to an end.
- 20:34The southern Kingdom of Judah survived for another 136 years
- 20:40because of the reforms of a few good kings.
- 20:43That's really interesting. Like a few good kings can bring
- 20:46about repentance, can bring about a turning towards God in a
- 20:51way I don't, I really feel like we're seeing that right now.
- 20:55It seemed it feels like there is a turning towards God and it's
- 20:59probably like what gets put in front of you.
- 21:01But I'm just seeing like all over the world that seems like
- 21:04people are turning to God. They're turning to Jesus.
- 21:07They're having dreams with Jesus in it, with Jesus in the dreams.
- 21:12And it's, it does seem like there is an awakening that's
- 21:16happening right now and has been for a few years now.
- 21:20And so hopefully with people turning towards God, there will
- 21:25be a reprieve and bad things happening.
- 21:29But we know not everyone does turn towards God.
- 21:32And, and I don't really know what the percentages are, but we
- 21:36do see people turning towards God, which is awesome.
- 21:41Let's see, what did this farming metaphor mean?
- 21:46This was an invitation for Israel to return to fidelity
- 21:50with God and covenant. It was also a denunciation of
- 21:54the people's behave, a denunciation of the people's
- 21:58behavior as God's chosen people. Ephraim, a trained heifer, was
- 22:02given the privileges of threshing.
- 22:04But as we so often see in the Old Testament, this blessing led
- 22:09to forgetting the law and subsequent disobedience.
- 22:13In order to reap a blessing once more, the nation would have to
- 22:18sow obedience to the law. They would have to break up
- 22:22their unplowed ground. Who was Shalman and where was
- 22:29Beth Arbell? Shalman may have may be an
- 22:33abbreviated form of Shalman Nasser the 5th, the king of
- 22:37Assyria, who laid siege to Samaria in 725 BC and died just
- 22:44before its capture in 722 BC. Notice that was three years, and
- 22:51there's a lot of threes in the Bible.
- 22:53The identity of Beth Arble is unknown, though the atrocity
- 22:58against its citizens was clearly known to Hosea's audience.
- 23:02Hosea's point was that Bethel, the calf idol center that
- 23:06represented all that was wicked in Israel, would experience the
- 23:11same fate as Beth Arble. And that's the end of Chapter
- 23:1710.
