- 0:09Speaker 1: Hey, what's up everybody? Welcome in to de Checko Daily.
- 0:12Speaker 1: I am your host, Andrew de Checko, Eagles Beat reporter
- 0:16Speaker 1: Friendsidethebirds dot Com. And there is still so much to
- 0:20Speaker 1: unpack in the aftermath of Jeff Stoutland stepping away from
- 0:23Speaker 1: his post as offensive line coach, a position in which
- 0:27Speaker 1: he's held for thirteen seasons. But what is very evident
- 0:33Speaker 1: is that the Eagles are going to implement drastic changes offensively,
- 0:37Speaker 1: as evidenced by Jeff Stoutland no longer being a member
- 0:41Speaker 1: of the staff. There's a young offensive coordinator in Sean
- 0:45Speaker 1: Mannion who is going to be bringing his ideas and
- 0:48Speaker 1: principles into the mix here. And then you also have
- 0:51Speaker 1: a new pass game coordinator in Josh Gizzard, and I
- 0:54Speaker 1: really like some of the things that he was able
- 0:56Speaker 1: to do in his two seasons with the Buccaneers in
- 1:00Speaker 1: terms of spacing and things like that. As I mentioned before,
- 1:04Speaker 1: he was put on my radar a few years ago,
- 1:06Speaker 1: well really five years ago now at the East West
- 1:09Speaker 1: shrinebol as a young up and coming coach to keep
- 1:12Speaker 1: an eye on the way that it was put to
- 1:14Speaker 1: me is that he's going to be a future offensive coordinator.
- 1:17Speaker 1: But there's also potential changes that are going to be
- 1:21Speaker 1: happening with the Eagles staff, and there's one that already
- 1:24Speaker 1: has I will add to that in a moment, but
- 1:28Speaker 1: I think when you look at the current coaches who
- 1:31Speaker 1: were in the fold, Scott Leffler the quarterbacks coach, to
- 1:35Speaker 1: me would appear to be if you're looking for a
- 1:38Speaker 1: tweak here or there, and I think I've talked about
- 1:40Speaker 1: this on a previous podcast, that would be the most
- 1:43Speaker 1: obvious choice to swap out. Knowing Sean Mannion's background and
- 1:48Speaker 1: coaching quarterbacks, I'm sure there is maybe a name or
- 1:51Speaker 1: two that he probably knows or is familiar with and
- 1:54Speaker 1: would probably feel comfortable sliding him in that role and
- 1:57Speaker 1: allowing them to mold the quarterback in the way that
- 2:01Speaker 1: he would like that to happen. But we'll have to
- 2:03Speaker 1: wait and see. But the Eagles did act quickly in
- 2:08Speaker 1: filling the Jeff Stotland role, and it was on Thursday
- 2:12Speaker 1: morning that it was announced that Ryan Mahaffey will be
- 2:17Speaker 1: appointed the run game coordinator and tight ends coach for
- 2:20Speaker 1: the Philadelphia Eagles, meaning that if he's going to be
- 2:25Speaker 1: the tight ends coach, that's got to mean that Jason Michael,
- 2:28Speaker 1: who has been here since twenty twenty one, coaching under
- 2:32Speaker 1: Nick Sirianni. He came over as part of his initial staff,
- 2:35Speaker 1: will no longer be the tight ends coach, but he
- 2:37Speaker 1: takes the role of Jeff Stoutland, so zooming out a
- 2:41Speaker 1: little bit. This is going to be an interesting development
- 2:46Speaker 1: here because I'm curious to see what his what his
- 2:50Speaker 1: vision for the offense is. Well, he's going to have
- 2:52Speaker 1: to adapt to whatever Mannion wants to do. But I
- 2:55Speaker 1: want to provide a little bit of a background here.
- 2:59Speaker 1: He is. He went to Northern Iowa. He played football there.
- 3:02Speaker 1: He entered the league as an undrafted free agent in
- 3:04Speaker 1: twenty eleven, spent time with the Ravens, the Colts, and
- 3:07Speaker 1: the Dolphins. His first coaching expedition, if you will, was
- 3:13Speaker 1: at Northern Iowa in twenty thirteen. He was the tight
- 3:15Speaker 1: ends coach there. Then he went to Notre Dame, then
- 3:18Speaker 1: Northern Iowa again, Western Kentucky where he was the tight
- 3:21Speaker 1: ends coach, Northern Iowa again where he was the offensive
- 3:24Speaker 1: coordinator in twenty nineteen and twenty twenty. Then he enters
- 3:28Speaker 1: the NFL and he spends time with the Green Bay
- 3:31Speaker 1: Packers from twenty twenty one all the way through the
- 3:34Speaker 1: twenty twenty five season. The different roles. In twenty twenty
- 3:37Speaker 1: one offensive quality control coach. In twenty two and twenty three,
- 3:41Speaker 1: he was the assistant offensive line coach that's going to
- 3:44Speaker 1: come into play here obviously, and for twenty four and
- 3:47Speaker 1: twenty five he was the wide receivers coach, So a
- 3:50Speaker 1: very diverse background. He's held a multitude of roles, but
- 3:55Speaker 1: I'm most curious to see what he's able to do
- 3:58Speaker 1: from a running game perspective more than I am with
- 4:02Speaker 1: the tight ends, because he has the offensive line background,
- 4:06Speaker 1: or the offensive quality control and the assistant offensive line
- 4:10Speaker 1: coach background that I think is in particular, is really
- 4:13Speaker 1: going to help his transition because this is a thirty
- 4:18Speaker 1: eight year old coach, so it's gonna take him a
- 4:22Speaker 1: little bit of time, I would imagine, to take on
- 4:24Speaker 1: yet a different role, but have to be in alignment
- 4:29Speaker 1: with Sean Manny and how he wants the run designs
- 4:34Speaker 1: to look, because you're going to see more of a
- 4:36Speaker 1: Sean McVay Kyle Shanahan style, some more zone outside zone
- 4:41Speaker 1: type of things, stretches, and there's going to be a
- 4:45Speaker 1: lot of runs towards the perimeter, and this is sort
- 4:49Speaker 1: of to modernize the offense, but you are going to
- 4:52Speaker 1: have to reconfigure everything that you've done because the Eagles
- 4:54Speaker 1: operated in a certain style under Jeff Stoutland, and this
- 4:59Speaker 1: is going to be a contrast. You look at the
- 5:01Speaker 1: offensive line that they currently have, do they have the
- 5:04Speaker 1: ideal personnel to be able to do that effectively? We're
- 5:08Speaker 1: going to have to wait and see Saquon Barkley. For
- 5:11Speaker 1: as tremendous a player as he is, he's not exactly
- 5:14Speaker 1: Le'Veon Bell when it comes to patients where you kind
- 5:17Speaker 1: of have to be when you're running those stretched type
- 5:20Speaker 1: of plays and falling into that sort of blocking style
- 5:25Speaker 1: and running game design. So those are all fair questions.
- 5:30Speaker 1: He's someone who more hits the hole, but it's going
- 5:33Speaker 1: to require maybe a different style from Saquon. And then
- 5:36Speaker 1: I think to a larger point, you also have questions
- 5:40Speaker 1: about the offensive line. Not apart from the health, you
- 5:44Speaker 1: have to look at that group and wonder do they
- 5:48Speaker 1: have the style? Is that going to alter the way
- 5:51Speaker 1: that you approach the draft and free agency and things
- 5:53Speaker 1: like that. We don't know who the offensive line coach
- 5:56Speaker 1: is yet that has not been announced. We have to
- 6:00Speaker 1: wait and see. Well, I've been coming through some of
- 6:03Speaker 1: the potential names and fits and all that, but there
- 6:06Speaker 1: haven't been any reported interviews. So that's going to be
- 6:10Speaker 1: an enormous task, needless to say, for whoever steps in
- 6:14Speaker 1: filling the shoes of a legend, and if they're a
- 6:17Speaker 1: young coach, well you have a veteran leading group of
- 6:22Speaker 1: offensive lineman. I'm not suggesting that they're going to rebel
- 6:26Speaker 1: or anything like that, but he's going to have to
- 6:28Speaker 1: command respect. He's going to have to earn the player's
- 6:31Speaker 1: respect because the coach that he's replacing had been here
- 6:35Speaker 1: for thirteen years with an extensive track record of success
- 6:39Speaker 1: player development, and was very much like a father figure
- 6:43Speaker 1: for a lot of those players. So that is such
- 6:45Speaker 1: a tough act to follow. But I'll be keeping an
- 6:48Speaker 1: eye on and continue to report and do what I
- 6:51Speaker 1: can behind the scenes to find who that potential coach
- 6:55Speaker 1: can be. Who are some eligible names that would be
- 6:59Speaker 1: a fit. But it does look like you're going to
- 7:02Speaker 1: see a drastically different offense than the one we've seen
- 7:06Speaker 1: over the last five years. Really, and for those of
- 7:10Speaker 1: you who were clamoring for a new look offense. It
- 7:14Speaker 1: appears you got it, but I always say be careful
- 7:17Speaker 1: what you wish for. And I guess I should say
- 7:20Speaker 1: that I say appears because when Kellum Moore came over,
- 7:25Speaker 1: if you remember, there was supposed to be an influx
- 7:28Speaker 1: of motion, heavy utilization and reliance on that third wide
- 7:33Speaker 1: receiver with eleven personnel, middle of the field type of stuff.
- 7:38Speaker 1: They tried that for oh, i'd say about four weeks
- 7:43Speaker 1: and then they had to pivot, scrap it and become
- 7:47Speaker 1: a run centric team to great success. It carried them
- 7:51Speaker 1: to a super Bowl. But you can come in with
- 7:55Speaker 1: all the ideas that you want, but you can't. It's
- 7:59Speaker 1: the square pit round hoole analogy, right. Any good coach
- 8:03Speaker 1: who comes in is going to shape their system to
- 8:06Speaker 1: their personnel. If you don't know who your players are,
- 8:09Speaker 1: you can't come in set in your ways, knowing that
- 8:13Speaker 1: you want to do something and you're gonna do it
- 8:14Speaker 1: no matter what. You have to see the talent that
- 8:17Speaker 1: you're working with and obviously crafted around that. Every great
- 8:20Speaker 1: coach does that, and that's obviously the way to go.
- 8:24Speaker 1: Otherwise there's going to be a big struggle. So maybe
- 8:27Speaker 1: you might see a marrying of some of the things
- 8:29Speaker 1: Eagles did well in the past, coupled with what Sean
- 8:32Speaker 1: Mannian wants to do and how they want to configure
- 8:36Speaker 1: the past game and all things like that. But I'm
- 8:38Speaker 1: really curious to see how this looks because training camp
- 8:40Speaker 1: isn't always the ultimate indicator. You have to wait till
- 8:43Speaker 1: you get to the regular season to really get a
- 8:45Speaker 1: sense for what the offense is going to look like,
- 8:47Speaker 1: what's working, and kind of go from there. But as
- 8:51Speaker 1: I said, you wanted a new offense, not only are
- 8:54Speaker 1: you appearing to get a considerably new offense, but you're
- 8:58Speaker 1: also getting a renovated coaching staff, a reconfigured coaching staff.
- 9:06Speaker 1: So we'll see. I mean, for continuity purposes, just understand
- 9:11Speaker 1: that it's going to take time when you want to
- 9:13Speaker 1: rip the found not necessarily rip the foundation out, but
- 9:16Speaker 1: when you're going to tweak things to this degree and
- 9:19Speaker 1: you have new coaches that haven't worked together before, and
- 9:22Speaker 1: you're trying to get everybody on the same page, build
- 9:25Speaker 1: an offense, and then configure your personnel. Yeah, that's going
- 9:29Speaker 1: to take time. I don't envision that being something that's
- 9:32Speaker 1: going to be instantaneous. It rarely is, but just understand that,
- 9:37Speaker 1: let it marinate a little bit, give it a little
- 9:40Speaker 1: you know, a little patience. But you kind of got
- 9:44Speaker 1: to see you got to see the way things are
- 9:46Speaker 1: sort of developing, and just kind of trust it and
- 9:49Speaker 1: go from there. And from everything that I've gathered, I
- 9:52Speaker 1: go back to this, you should be intrigued with Sean Mannion,
- 9:57Speaker 1: curiously intrigued. The young coach with very little experience, but
- 10:01Speaker 1: highly thought of around the NFL. Intelligent, forward thinking, and
- 10:07Speaker 1: a really good teacher. So there's a lot of intangibles
- 10:10Speaker 1: that he's bringing to this role that I think should
- 10:13Speaker 1: add some good spice to an offense that was really
- 10:18Speaker 1: bland over the past five seasons. And what does this
- 10:21Speaker 1: mean for Nick Sirianni. Well, you don't have to guess
- 10:26Speaker 1: all it's very obvious. All signs point to the heat
- 10:29Speaker 1: being turned up a little bit more on his chair,
- 10:33Speaker 1: the ice thinning, whatever analogy you want to use. When
- 10:37Speaker 1: you're ripping out the roots and you're completely trying something different,
- 10:44Speaker 1: I mean, there's going to be no other person to
- 10:47Speaker 1: fall back on to point the finger, not that he's
- 10:50Speaker 1: ever pointed the finger. I'm saying from the outside. There's
- 10:53Speaker 1: going to be no one who they can point the
- 10:55Speaker 1: finger at. Kevin Petulo's gone. These are all new coaches.
- 11:00Speaker 1: This is going to be an all news system. Nick's
- 11:04Speaker 1: gonna seemingly have whatever he needs at his disposal. Young coaches,
- 11:09Speaker 1: bright ideas theoretically going to open things up. You're probably
- 11:12Speaker 1: going to see more under center, more motion. That's what
- 11:15Speaker 1: you all want. That's likely what you're going to get.
- 11:19Speaker 1: But that's not to say that the pressure isn't being
- 11:23Speaker 1: turned up on Nick Sirianni, because it absolutely is. That's
- 11:26Speaker 1: the way that this offseason has really developed, and it's
- 11:32Speaker 1: kind of, you know, it's kind of pointing in that direction.
- 11:35Speaker 1: So Jeffrey Lorie and the Eagles have historically been able
- 11:41Speaker 1: to ban the team together. And again, it's just February fifth,
- 11:45Speaker 1: so a lot's going to change. But the Eagles have
- 11:47Speaker 1: a demonstrated track record of success. And while things may
- 11:50Speaker 1: look a little bit in flux at the moment, you
- 11:53Speaker 1: just got to give it a little bit of time
- 11:55Speaker 1: to see what this team becomes, what the coaching staff
- 11:59Speaker 1: looks like, and what the drafts start, what the draft process,
- 12:03Speaker 1: how that goes. That will be a big tell based
- 12:06Speaker 1: off of the players and the skill sets that they target,
- 12:10Speaker 1: maybe what they're trying to do offensively, what they're trying
- 12:13Speaker 1: to accomplish, what they want their identity to be.
- 12:15Speaker 2: Hey, it's that time of the year that everyone's trying

- 15:30Speaker 1: So we're gonna learn a lot more. But those are
- 15:32Speaker 1: just some of my thoughts here. I wanted to kind
- 15:35Speaker 1: of give you a little background on the newly appointed
- 15:38Speaker 1: run game coordator and tight ends coach. I will also
- 15:41Speaker 1: say it's a shame for Jason Michael, who is a
- 15:46Speaker 1: great guy, enjoy talking till I sat down with him
- 15:49Speaker 1: in the super Bowl at the Super Bowl during media
- 15:53Speaker 1: availability in twenty twenty two, right there in that ballroom
- 15:56Speaker 1: in Phoenix, and tremendous conversation, passionate about what he does
- 16:02Speaker 1: and the players that he gets to work with, and
- 16:05Speaker 1: was quick to highlight every single player going down the
- 16:08Speaker 1: list of what he was impressed or what he appreciated
- 16:11Speaker 1: about them, and the different ways that he approaches working
- 16:16Speaker 1: with those individual players. And I mean, look, you can
- 16:21Speaker 1: say what you will. I mean I saw that when
- 16:24Speaker 1: I posted that, there were some comments that I didn't
- 16:28Speaker 1: find to be too tasteful. Look, you have the honest,
- 16:35Speaker 1: the honest answer here, and I don't want to be
- 16:37Speaker 1: that guy because I'm never that person. Few people know
- 16:42Speaker 1: what these coaches do on a day to day basis,
- 16:46Speaker 1: how they're like behind the scenes, how their players talk
- 16:49Speaker 1: about them, and what the results are. And I think
- 16:53Speaker 1: that there's many, not all, because I don't like just
- 16:56Speaker 1: casting a wide net here. There are many who are
- 16:59Speaker 1: quick to blame coaches for deficiencies. It's not Jason Michael's
- 17:03Speaker 1: fault that grand kaw Kata struggled as a blocker. They're
- 17:08Speaker 1: putting him in those situations. That's not what he excels at.
- 17:11Speaker 1: He's a receiving centric tight end. He's a willing blocker,
- 17:14Speaker 1: as I often say, but he's being put in very
- 17:17Speaker 1: challenging situations that don't accentuate his skill set. But I
- 17:22Speaker 1: think you can look at Dallas Goddard having a good season.
- 17:26Speaker 1: You can look at whenever he's had to miss time,
- 17:29Speaker 1: players have capably stepped in. Jack Stole was an undrafted
- 17:32Speaker 1: free agent and developed nicely. He's playing with the Saints.
- 17:36Speaker 1: He's carved out a nice career as a blocking centric
- 17:39Speaker 1: tight end. EJ. Jenkins has stuck around. He's talked to
- 17:43Speaker 1: me about how he would get extra time working with
- 17:46Speaker 1: Jason Michael and how much he helped him really hone
- 17:49Speaker 1: in and get that blocking dialed in. It's helped him
- 17:52Speaker 1: carve out a role in the NFL. It's kept him around.
- 17:57Speaker 1: You can look at other players who have played tight
- 18:00Speaker 1: end here in Philadelphia during that time, but there is
- 18:03Speaker 1: noticeable track record of success production. And I think also
- 18:10Speaker 1: importantly is when player when Dallas Goddters had to miss time,
- 18:14Speaker 1: they've worked with what they had and I thought that
- 18:17Speaker 1: he put them in positions where they were best suited
- 18:21Speaker 1: and that, you know, it's just a tough nature of
- 18:23Speaker 1: the coaching profession. He gave it a five year run
- 18:27Speaker 1: here in Philadelphia, and I just wanted to highlight a
- 18:29Speaker 1: coach that I thought was underappreciated, doesn't didn't get talked
- 18:32Speaker 1: a lot about, but as most coaches do, they seem
- 18:37Speaker 1: to get dumped on quite a bit. So I kind
- 18:38Speaker 1: of wanted to just put a bow on that and
- 18:41Speaker 1: wrap up this show. That's going to do it for
- 18:43Speaker 1: this edition of the Czech O Daily Andrew decheco and
- 18:46Speaker 1: I'll catch you all on the next one.
