- 0:17Speaker 1: Heavy hump day, everybody. Welcome to the Sean O'Connell Show.
- 0:21Speaker 2: Glad to have you with us. We've got a special
- 0:26Speaker 2: version of the show today. Schedules have dictated that Dishing
- 0:31Speaker 2: with Dev is going live in half an hour. Devin
- 0:36Speaker 2: Dampier will join us at 1130 this morning. We will
- 0:40Speaker 2: replay it again and make it available online. But Dishin'
- 0:45Speaker 2: with Dev will be at 1130. Ashley West, Utah volleyball hitter,
- 0:56Speaker 2: is going to join us on the show at noon.
- 0:59Speaker 2: And Between the Pipes with Adrian Denny, also at 130.
- 1:03Speaker 2: Kiki Solano, the Utah Royals marketing director to... Keep us
- 1:08Speaker 2: up to date on what's going on with the Utah
- 1:10Speaker 2: Royals and breast cancer awareness and the stuff that they're
- 1:15Speaker 2: doing for that great cause. Short week for me, I
- 1:21Speaker 2: got our only October event for the PFL this weekend
- 1:26Speaker 2: in Chicago. So I'll be doing the show today and
- 1:30Speaker 2: then I'm out for Thursday and Friday, which I'll be honest,
- 1:34Speaker 2: in a game week is not exactly ideal, but It
- 1:37Speaker 2: is what it is.
- 1:38Speaker 1: So bear with us if you can.
- 1:40Speaker 2: 877-353-0700 is how you get a hold of us on
- 1:44Speaker 2: the text line at RealOCSports on Twitter. And it's always
- 1:49Speaker 2: good to hear from you. We'll take a deep dive
- 1:54Speaker 2: into the Colorado matchup today. Colorado coming off their bye week.
- 1:58Speaker 2: I don't know that that changes a lot for a team.
- 2:01Speaker 2: That is statistically. They're having some problems.
- 2:04Speaker 1: Practically.
- 2:05Speaker 2: They're having some problems on film. There's some easily identifiable problems.
- 2:09Speaker 2: I thought we were mostly just going to be tongue
- 2:11Speaker 2: in cheek about, you know, making fun of how small
- 2:15Speaker 2: this team is. It does manifest itself in things like
- 2:19Speaker 2: yards after contact for the opposition. And that obviously bodes
- 2:23Speaker 2: well for the university of Utah. So we'll take a
- 2:25Speaker 2: closer look at the Colorado matchup today. And because of,
- 2:29Speaker 2: I don't get to be with you on Thursday and Friday.
- 2:31Speaker 2: I hope that you'll indulge me and tell me what
- 2:33Speaker 2: your expectations for this game are. I was hopefully not
- 2:38Speaker 2: overconfident against Kansas. I think that in the reality of
- 2:41Speaker 2: the way that that game played out, my Friday show,
- 2:45Speaker 2: I was probably dismissive of Kansas' chances, and I don't
- 2:49Speaker 2: want anyone to feel that way about Colorado, but this
- 2:52Speaker 2: is a Colorado team that is sort of teetering on
- 2:55Speaker 2: the brink right now Isaac Wilson will be the starting
- 2:59Speaker 2: quarterback as Deion Sanders announced. That by itself is an
- 3:03Speaker 2: interesting development here. Stokes is also playing on the defensive
- 3:08Speaker 2: side of the ball for the University of Colorado after
- 3:11Speaker 2: being with the University of Utah. I don't think that
- 3:14Speaker 2: those players, good or bad, give Colorado any kind of
- 3:19Speaker 2: advantage here. I talked yesterday about how difficult the situation
- 3:22Speaker 2: for Isaac Wilson is going to be because this coaching
- 3:25Speaker 2: staff knows his tendencies so well. If he's getting anything
- 3:29Speaker 2: from the university of Colorado staff, hopefully he's getting coached
- 3:33Speaker 2: out of those bad tendencies, but this is a Colorado
- 3:37Speaker 2: Buffaloes team right now. That is dead last in the
- 3:40Speaker 2: big 12 conference in scoring. They're 18 and a half
- 3:44Speaker 2: points per game. They are 15th out of 16 in
- 3:48Speaker 2: rushing offense per game. They are middle of the road
- 3:54Speaker 2: in their passing offense right now. They're eighth in the
- 3:57Speaker 2: conference in passing offense, which is only three spots below
- 4:01Speaker 2: where Utah is at. They're 14th overall in offensive production. Defensively,
- 4:08Speaker 2: Colorado fares slightly better. They're the number 14 scoring defense
- 4:13Speaker 2: in the conference. They're ninth in the conference against the run,
- 4:18Speaker 2: which I think is going to be massively important in
- 4:20Speaker 2: this game. They are 10th in the conference against the pass.
- 4:27Speaker 2: And the aggregate for Colorado is they're the 10th best
- 4:30Speaker 2: overall defense in this conference. Now, there are some categories
- 4:35Speaker 2: in which they're doing some decent work. Colorado in the
- 4:40Speaker 2: tackles for loss category, not in sacks necessarily, but in
- 4:43Speaker 2: the tackles for loss category, They have 44 TFLs on
- 4:48Speaker 2: the season. That's second to only Arizona. Utah, by the way,
- 4:52Speaker 2: is almost last in the conference. They're 14th in the
- 4:55Speaker 2: conference in tackles for loss, which surprised me when I
- 4:58Speaker 2: looked that up because I feel like there's been plenty
- 5:01Speaker 2: of negative plays for the opposition based on Utah doing
- 5:04Speaker 2: some good things. But they're 14th in the conference right
- 5:08Speaker 2: now in tackles for loss. Colorado has some protection issues.
- 5:14Speaker 2: The university of Utah needs a get right game in
- 5:18Speaker 2: pass rush.
- 5:19Speaker 3: Okay.
- 5:21Speaker 1: This is it. This is your best opportunity.
- 5:25Speaker 2: Whether you want to blame the quarterbacks, Julian Lewis, wasn't
- 5:27Speaker 2: doing a good job with this. Isaac Wilson is notoriously
- 5:30Speaker 2: not super great with this. Uh, the offensive line lost
- 5:34Speaker 2: its best player transferred LSU in the off season.
- 5:37Speaker 1: Jordan Seton is no longer there. All right.
- 5:40Speaker 2: Colorado doesn't have the right kind of bodies walking out
- 5:43Speaker 2: of that locker room door for the most part in Boulder.
- 5:46Speaker 2: They've given up 11 sacks so far on the year.
- 5:51Speaker 2: If Utah is going to experience a get-right game with
- 5:55Speaker 2: the pass rush, this is the best opportunity to do
- 5:58Speaker 2: it for several reasons. Because we know who the quarterback is. Also,
- 6:04Speaker 2: because this offensive line is just not great. Utah, by
- 6:08Speaker 2: the way, has given up six sacks on the season.
- 6:11Speaker 2: That's sixth place in the conference. If you remember when
- 6:16Speaker 2: we go back to the previous start or the start
- 6:19Speaker 2: of the previous season when you had this all-everything offensive
- 6:23Speaker 2: line and an elusive quarterback who was coming off the
- 6:28Speaker 2: season at New Mexico where he was only sacked personally
- 6:32Speaker 2: like three times on the year, I overpromised and said
- 6:36Speaker 2: that you're not going to You're not going to see
- 6:39Speaker 2: this quarterback get sacked at the university of Utah. Ultimately
- 6:43Speaker 2: Utah gave up 14 sacks on the year. That was
- 6:46Speaker 2: good enough for third in the big 12 conference.
- 6:49Speaker 1: You'd like to see that number. When we get to
- 6:51Speaker 1: the end of the season, be similar.
- 6:55Speaker 2: And I think with healthy quarterbacks, both bird and Devin,
- 7:00Speaker 2: it's more likely that Utah has a good number there,
- 7:02Speaker 2: but right now they're trending toward the middle of the
- 7:05Speaker 2: conference and in that particular statistical category. The other thing
- 7:09Speaker 2: that I was thinking about when we were talking about,
- 7:12Speaker 2: you know, the particulars of a Colorado versus Utah matchup,
- 7:19Speaker 2: as these go on the road to Boulder, there's a, an.
- 7:27Speaker 1: Ingrained part of.
- 7:29Speaker 2: Utah football identity that we attach to its defense. And
- 7:36Speaker 2: You're now, once again, looking at a program that is
- 7:43Speaker 2: under a defensive-minded head coach, under a defensive player, defensive coordinator,
- 7:48Speaker 2: defensive position coach, right?
- 7:50Speaker 1: We're going on to.
- 7:53Speaker 2: Three decades now where Utah has had a defensive-minded head
- 7:57Speaker 2: coach and wanted that physical presence and the defense to
- 8:01Speaker 2: be kind of the the flag bearer for the program,
- 8:04Speaker 2: we're also trending in a direction where offensively Utah might
- 8:11Speaker 2: be outpacing its own self defensively.
- 8:15Speaker 1: I honestly, I didn't know that we would ever see this.
- 8:19Speaker 2: Uh, although urban Meyer and those offensive years, the two
- 8:22Speaker 2: years with urban Meyer, I think Utah was better known
- 8:26Speaker 2: for its offense and its innovation and the spread concepts
- 8:29Speaker 2: that everyone knows. in college football have ended up adopting
- 8:33Speaker 2: and normalizing and making it. So we don't even talk
- 8:36Speaker 2: about them anymore, but that was a big offensive explosion
- 8:40Speaker 2: for a couple of years. These last two under separate coordinators,
- 8:43Speaker 2: by the way, and separate head coaches for the university
- 8:46Speaker 2: of Utah with plenty of ball left to play. And
- 8:49Speaker 2: we'll watch it play out and we'll figure out what
- 8:51Speaker 2: it's going to be. Utah is trending in a direction
- 8:56Speaker 2: where like Balance might be more the identity. Offense might
- 8:59Speaker 2: be more the identity than just saying, oh, yeah, this
- 9:02Speaker 2: is one of the best defenses in all of college football.
- 9:05Speaker 2: And that's not to disparage Colton Swan or the defensive
- 9:08Speaker 2: work that is being done at the University of Utah
- 9:11Speaker 2: right now. This is the number six scoring defense in
- 9:14Speaker 2: the country at the moment. Miami, North Dakota State, randomly
- 9:20Speaker 2: New Mexico. You wouldn't have expected. Notre Dame, Indiana, Utah,
- 9:25Speaker 2: Ohio State, BYU. They're tied with TCU and Georgia. So
- 9:30Speaker 2: you've got in the top ten in the conference right now,
- 9:33Speaker 2: or excuse me, the top ten in the country right now,
- 9:35Speaker 2: you've got three Big 12 conference teams when it comes
- 9:38Speaker 2: to scoring defense, and Utah is tops among all of them.
- 9:43Speaker 2: They're number nine right now in the country in rushing defense.
- 9:49Speaker 2: The pass defense, you've got to scroll down a little
- 9:53Speaker 2: bit to find where Utah ranks.
- 9:56Speaker 1: Well, how far am I going to have to scroll
- 9:58Speaker 1: down on this?
- 9:59Speaker 2: But in any case, this University of Utah football program
- 10:04Speaker 2: is still defensive-minded. They're top 18 in the country in
- 10:08Speaker 2: total defense. The scoring defense is what matters more to me.
- 10:13Speaker 2: And when you think about a defensive identity, how well
- 10:15Speaker 2: does a team run the ball against you is oftentimes important.
- 10:19Speaker 2: what you really attach that sort of stereotype to. And
- 10:23Speaker 2: Utah ranks well in those places. But oddly enough, for
- 10:28Speaker 2: the second straight year, they're ranking equal to or higher
- 10:32Speaker 2: on offense than they are on defense. And that's just
- 10:35Speaker 2: something that we have not been used to as fans
- 10:39Speaker 2: of this program, as observers of this program, as alumni
- 10:41Speaker 2: from this program.
- 10:43Speaker 1: Whatever you think of death.
- 10:45Speaker 2: When, when Joel Klatt said death taxes in Utah football,
- 10:48Speaker 2: he was talking about death taxes in Utah defense for
- 10:52Speaker 2: the most part. And then the outlier years for Utah
- 10:56Speaker 2: have come with this offensive potency. It is truly right.
- 11:05Speaker 2: It's it's the icing on the cake for Utah football.
- 11:09Speaker 2: It always has been, or previously has been the icing
- 11:14Speaker 2: on the cake for Utah football, because you could rely on,
- 11:16Speaker 2: oh man, this team is definitely going to be good
- 11:21Speaker 2: on the defensive side of the ball. They're definitely going
- 11:23Speaker 2: to be physical. What's going to separate your eight win
- 11:26Speaker 2: seasons from your 11 win seasons or your 12 win
- 11:30Speaker 2: seasons is going to be this, what we're seeing right
- 11:33Speaker 2: now from this team. So are we Are we ready
- 11:39Speaker 2: to think about this year's version of Utah football in
- 11:42Speaker 2: the same way we think about or thought about the
- 11:45Speaker 2: Pac-12 championship years and the Fiesta Bowl year and the
- 11:48Speaker 2: Sugar Bowl year and the year previous to the Fiesta
- 11:51Speaker 2: Bowl year, the 10-2 conference championship? Are we looking at
- 11:54Speaker 2: it and saying, yeah, this is a team that has
- 12:00Speaker 2: all of the bread and the butter and the building.
- 12:01Speaker 1: Blocks, but it also has.
- 12:06Speaker 2: The bells and whistles, the shiny stuff, the frosting, the
- 12:09Speaker 2: icing on the cake. Or do you have to look
- 12:14Speaker 2: at it differently now? Are you starting to look at
- 12:16Speaker 2: it differently now, whether you have to or not, that
- 12:19Speaker 2: Utah's offensive potency is going to become just as much
- 12:23Speaker 2: of the foundation as it is anything else? I'm starting
- 12:27Speaker 2: to deconstruct the program a little bit in my mind
- 12:31Speaker 2: in a way that I maybe didn't anticipate I was.
- 12:33Speaker 1: Going to or have to because.
- 12:36Speaker 2: The continuation of the legacy with Morgan Scali stepping into
- 12:40Speaker 2: a role he's been groomed for and prepared for for
- 12:42Speaker 2: a decade plus. I was like, yeah, it's going to
- 12:45Speaker 2: look more the same than different. And I think it does,
- 12:48Speaker 2: to some extent, look more the same and different, but
- 12:50Speaker 2: also not.
- 12:52Speaker 4: Right.
- 12:53Speaker 2: And even if it's just a continuation of the final
- 12:56Speaker 2: year where there was the final year of Witt's tenure,
- 13:00Speaker 2: where it was like, all right, you know what? Say
- 13:03Speaker 2: everything you want to say. about the track record with
- 13:06Speaker 2: offensive coordinators. And maybe, maybe you're a firm believer that
- 13:09Speaker 2: there was meddling with the offensive coordinators and limiting and
- 13:13Speaker 2: hampering and handcuffing those people, whether you believe that or not,
- 13:17Speaker 2: the results were different last year and offensively you were
- 13:24Speaker 2: potent enough. Now there was a couple of games, right?
- 13:28Speaker 2: And we know the games we're talking about. There was
- 13:30Speaker 2: just a couple of games where different decisions needed to
- 13:32Speaker 2: be made, but those decisions weren't made by the offensive coordinator, right?
- 13:37Speaker 2: So it was like the offense, I guess you could
- 13:43Speaker 2: extend blame and say red zone offense should be good enough.
- 13:46Speaker 2: Play calling should be good enough that you don't have
- 13:47Speaker 2: to settle for field goals.
- 13:50Speaker 1: But.
- 13:52Speaker 2: You had a top four offense in the country last year.
- 13:58Speaker 2: And again, different bodies, different faces, different names, slightly different philosophy,
- 14:08Speaker 2: but are we ready to say that there's an acknowledgement
- 14:11Speaker 2: that there's a, uh, a change of philosophy at the
- 14:17Speaker 2: top of this program that like, Hey, yeah, defense is wonderful.
- 14:21Speaker 2: And defense should be like the cinder blocks in the, the,
- 14:26Speaker 2: the post and the framing and maybe even the brickwork
- 14:30Speaker 2: on the outside. But If you want to win at
- 14:33Speaker 2: the top level of college football now, you also have
- 14:36Speaker 2: to make your offensive potency just as much of the
- 14:41Speaker 2: core identity for Utah football as the defensive potency or
- 14:46Speaker 2: the defensive stoutness or whatever you think the best adjective
- 14:50Speaker 2: is on that front.
- 14:56Speaker 1: Many, many, many, many years of Utah football....
- 15:01Speaker 2: We watched it and we would say the best player
- 15:04Speaker 2: on this year's team is fill in the defensive player blank, right?
- 15:10Speaker 2: This year, that is not the case. You got a
- 15:14Speaker 2: bunch of really good players on your defense. Rabbit Evans
- 15:18Speaker 2: is one of the highest graded safeties in the country
- 15:21Speaker 2: right now. And we've sort of let that happen quietly.
- 15:25Speaker 2: Nate Ritchie is playing better football than any of us
- 15:27Speaker 2: expected him to. He's going to be in the all
- 15:29Speaker 2: conference conversation. Trey Reynolds overtook John Newhall as your best linebacker.
- 15:35Speaker 2: I didn't anticipate that that was going to happen. Elijah
- 15:39Speaker 2: Ellis might be your second best linebacker on this team
- 15:41Speaker 2: right now. Jai Ma has given us flashes that he
- 15:45Speaker 2: could be the next version of a Steve Fafita type player,
- 15:49Speaker 2: but he's not quite there yet. Same thing with Carson Kalfusi.
- 15:53Speaker 2: And those guys, of course, are trying to catch up.
- 15:56Speaker 2: They're standing on the shoulders of some real literal giants
- 15:59Speaker 2: when we're talking about the great defensive tackles that have
- 16:01Speaker 2: come through this program.
- 16:02Speaker 1: But there's been so many years.
- 16:05Speaker 2: Where it's just kind of like a foregone conclusion where
- 16:07Speaker 2: you're like, yeah, the best overall player on the team
- 16:10Speaker 2: is Nate Orchard or Devin Lloyd or Cole Bishop or
- 16:16Speaker 2: Jalen Johnson or whatever you want to say. Last year
- 16:19Speaker 2: was an offensive player. This year it's an offensive player.
- 16:22Speaker 2: And there have been years, right? Alex Smith was the
- 16:24Speaker 2: best player overall on the Fiesta Bowl team.
- 16:28Speaker 1: He was a Heisman Trophy finalist. He should have won
- 16:32Speaker 1: the Heisman Trophy.
- 16:32Speaker 2: If you really compare Matt Leinart and what Matt Leinart
- 16:35Speaker 2: did that year to what Alex Smith did that year,
- 16:37Speaker 2: that's a hill I would be happy to die on.
- 16:41Speaker 1: Alex should have won that year.
- 16:44Speaker 2: If Alex Smith had been surrounded by USC's talent, his
- 16:48Speaker 2: numbers would have been far and away better than Matt
- 16:52Speaker 2: liners numbers. However, we don't need to go back and
- 16:55Speaker 2: re-adjudicate something that happened 22 years ago now.
- 17:01Speaker 1: And I look, I'm jumping the gun certainly. But when you.
- 17:06Speaker 2: Look at what Utah football has, has built its identity
- 17:09Speaker 2: around is one of the more important things that can
- 17:13Speaker 2: happen here. A shift from perhaps excessive reliance on defense
- 17:19Speaker 2: to balance. Because you can't get away from the defense.
- 17:24Speaker 2: You can't ignore the defense. You can't underemphasize defense. You
- 17:28Speaker 2: can't pretend that, oh, yeah, we're going to be just
- 17:32Speaker 2: fine if we don't have great defensive players. Look at
- 17:35Speaker 2: all of the great teams in college football right now.
- 17:38Speaker 2: Ohio State looks really, really good. Ohio State's best player.
- 17:44Speaker 2: And maybe the best overall player in college football right
- 17:46Speaker 2: now is a wide receiver. But if you go and
- 17:49Speaker 2: you look at their defense, Ohio state's defense has six
- 17:53Speaker 2: NFL draft picks on it. And probably 11 guys who
- 17:57Speaker 2: are at least going to get their cup of coffee
- 17:59Speaker 2: at that level.
- 18:00Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 18:00Speaker 6: Defense has been the Buckeyes identity since I think after
- 18:04Speaker 6: that Rose bowl year, when they, when they beat Utah, it's,
- 18:08Speaker 6: it's been, and that's when they hired Jim Knowles, if
- 18:10Speaker 6: I'm not mistaken. And now It's Matt Patricia taking over.
- 18:15Speaker 6: Jeremiah Smith has probably been the best player on the
- 18:18Speaker 6: team the last couple of years, but Caleb Downs was
- 18:22Speaker 6: arguably the best player on that team those couple of years, too.
- 18:28Speaker 6: This year, it's certainly Jeremiah Smith, but you're absolutely right.
- 18:31Speaker 6: The defense is what makes the Buckeyes great, and that's
- 18:36Speaker 6: what we've talked about with Utah over the years. Defense
- 18:38Speaker 6: is what made them great, and then if you have
- 18:41Speaker 6: any kind of offense and that could make your team,
- 18:44Speaker 6: the Utes team truly special.
- 18:46Speaker 4: Right.
- 18:46Speaker 6: And it does feel like that might be shifting a
- 18:49Speaker 6: little bit. I think I'm with you.
- 19:03Speaker 7: .
- 19:04Speaker 1: .
- 19:05Speaker 2: a lack of quarterback play or some deficiencies
- 19:08Speaker 2: on offense. We know what that looks like. That is
- 19:11Speaker 2: an eight win nine win team. That's still a really
- 19:14Speaker 2: good season. I'm not going to sit here and tell
- 19:17Speaker 2: you that's not worthy of your season ticket money.
- 19:19Speaker 1: That's not worthy of your merchandise purchases. But expectations, right?
- 19:24Speaker 2: The bar gets raised progressively when you have these great years.
- 19:27Speaker 2: And if you're going to one-up an 11-win season like
- 19:30Speaker 2: you had last year, you're going to have to do
- 19:32Speaker 2: it by pushing beyond what you did last year. And
- 19:35Speaker 2: you're going to have to do that with, well, if
- 19:37Speaker 2: you go back and you relitigate last year, you're going
- 19:41Speaker 2: to have to do that with better decision-making in a
- 19:46Speaker 2: rivalry game and then better tactics.
- 19:50Speaker 1: In a Texas tech game.
- 19:53Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 19:53Speaker 1: Not getting, not getting too fatigued.
- 19:55Speaker 6: That was the reasoning we heard what happened at the
- 19:58Speaker 6: end of the third quarter into the fourth quarter is
- 20:00Speaker 6: that defense is just too tired. Well, then don't be,
- 20:02Speaker 6: don't be tired. Like you gotta, your conditioning's gotta be better.
- 20:05Speaker 6: By the way, a brief aside here.
- 20:09Speaker 2: I cannot stand the fact that Will Hammond has come
- 20:13Speaker 2: back down to earth and is showing what he really
- 20:15Speaker 2: is as a quarterback and that his best moment of,
- 20:18Speaker 2: it's going to go down as the best moment in
- 20:20Speaker 2: his college football career. We're going to have to talk
- 20:23Speaker 2: about that. And it'll be only the real ones know
- 20:27Speaker 2: that he made you believe if you were sitting at
- 20:31Speaker 2: Rice Echo Stadium last year, he made you believe like,
- 20:34Speaker 2: oh my gosh, their backup might be better than their starter.
- 20:37Speaker 1: He wasn't.
- 20:38Speaker 2: And they knew that, and that's why they tried to
- 20:39Speaker 2: bring in Sorsby, and that didn't work out, and that's
- 20:43Speaker 2: ultimately perhaps going to be the vulnerability of Texas Tech,
- 20:47Speaker 2: even though their schedule is relatively soft this year.
- 20:50Speaker 1: But I digress. That's not important. I'm looking at the
- 20:52Speaker 1: top-ranked teams in the land right now.
- 20:55Speaker 2: Look, by the way, your rival BYU, BYU is doing
- 21:00Speaker 2: this exact thing right now.
- 21:02Speaker 7: Right?
- 21:03Speaker 2: The best version of BYU football forever... has been all BYU.
- 21:07Speaker 2: It's offense BYU. It's all about quarterback, play your quarterback,
- 21:11Speaker 2: play passing game. They've had some really phenomenal running backs.
- 21:15Speaker 1: Also.
- 21:15Speaker 2: They've had some great offensive lineman. They've had a couple
- 21:18Speaker 2: of great defensive lineman, but they've had great offensive lineman.
- 21:21Speaker 2: And I'm talking about overall program identity. I'm not talking
- 21:25Speaker 2: about year by year by year, right? BYU has been
- 21:29Speaker 2: thought of for, for decades. as if they're going to excel,
- 21:33Speaker 2: they're going to excel on the offensive side of the ball,
- 21:35Speaker 2: whether that's fair or accurate or not. That is the
- 21:39Speaker 2: snapshot mental picture of BYU football. And the best version
- 21:43Speaker 2: of BYU football that we're getting right now is built
- 21:46Speaker 2: around what is look, bear Bachmeier is awesome.
- 21:50Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 21:50Speaker 8: All right.
- 21:50Speaker 6: That three, the fact that he had over 300 yards
- 21:54Speaker 6: in a game when they didn't have their best player
- 21:56Speaker 6: and he had to step up against Iowa state, like,
- 22:00Speaker 6: It didn't look exactly pretty the whole time, but you
- 22:03Speaker 6: look at the statue, you went, okay, this guy is
- 22:06Speaker 6: capable of carrying the team when he needs to.
- 22:08Speaker 1: He's that good. They had, look, they had Taysom Hill.
- 22:11Speaker 3: Yep.
- 22:13Speaker 1: Really good. They had They've had, they had a bunch
- 22:16Speaker 1: of really good quarterbacks before taste them.
- 22:18Speaker 6: Like you probably have to go back to max hall
- 22:21Speaker 6: to where you like, that's a really good quarterback.
- 22:23Speaker 1: Max hall was awesome in college. Beck was awesome in
- 22:26Speaker 1: college back before that. And then on and on before.
- 22:29Speaker 2: That, they had a bunch, they, they, you know, they,
- 22:31Speaker 2: there were years where you had like Cody Hoffman and
- 22:34Speaker 2: you had Austin Colley and you had a bunch of
- 22:37Speaker 2: these great offensive players.
- 22:38Speaker 1: And it's not like they don't have those guys this year. right?
- 22:42Speaker 2: But what you saw from BYU in these last couple
- 22:45Speaker 2: of seasons was Jay Hill's presence and Jay Hill's arrival
- 22:49Speaker 2: and Kalani Satake getting his coaching.
- 22:53Speaker 1: Staff, right?
- 22:54Speaker 2: And the identity, the identity of BYU shifting, not to
- 22:58Speaker 2: just being fully defensive, but to being about more of
- 23:01Speaker 2: a balanced thing. And of course that leads to greater success.
- 23:04Speaker 2: And that's again, don't think of it as a pendulum swinging.
- 23:09Speaker 2: Just think of it as like your pie chart or
- 23:12Speaker 2: your bar graph, not being all one color anymore.
- 23:15Speaker 1: Not being like, Oh, Utah.
- 23:17Speaker 4: If, if.
- 23:18Speaker 2: Offense is white and defense is red. You looked like
- 23:22Speaker 2: Pac-Man for a long time, big old red Pac-Man, but
- 23:25Speaker 2: there's this little sliver of offense and it was just.
- 23:27Speaker 1: Defense, defense, defense, defense.
- 23:29Speaker 2: And now you're getting a lot more balance here and
- 23:32Speaker 2: the offense and the play calling and the talent, the
- 23:35Speaker 2: distribution of talent and best players across.
- 23:38Speaker 1: Like, can you think of.
- 23:42Speaker 2: How many times I sat in a chair or bill
- 23:46Speaker 2: Riley sat in a chair or Spence check. It sat
- 23:48Speaker 2: in a chair or Tom Hackett sat in this chair
- 23:51Speaker 2: or Brian Swinney sat in the chair or Kyle Gunther
- 23:54Speaker 2: sat in a chair.
- 23:55Speaker 1: And said, you know what?
- 23:57Speaker 2: This defense is going to be amazing, but who is
- 24:00Speaker 2: going to catch the passes? Who's going to score touchdowns,
- 24:03Speaker 2: going to throw the ball. Who's going to be like,
- 24:05Speaker 2: can this quarterback pass? You know, your running back's going
- 24:08Speaker 2: to be good.
- 24:09Speaker 3: Right?
- 24:09Speaker 2: And now you're looking at a identity shift, not change, not,
- 24:15Speaker 2: not flip, but it's like a glow up from a
- 24:20Speaker 2: balance standpoint that is sorely sorely solely dependent for Utah
- 24:27Speaker 2: football on an offensive increase. And for BYU football, it's
- 24:33Speaker 2: taken a defensive increase to get them to where they
- 24:36Speaker 2: need to be. And you look at Think of the
- 24:39Speaker 2: teams that are at the top of the country right now, Georgia,
- 24:42Speaker 2: Notre Dame, Miami, Ohio state, Indiana, Alabama, Texas, BYU is
- 24:50Speaker 2: there now.
- 24:51Speaker 1: Ole miss Texas tech.
- 24:53Speaker 2: Well, Texas tech might still be the outlier because Texas
- 24:57Speaker 2: tech is a defensive program.
- 24:59Speaker 6: And we just, we just talked about the quarterback play
- 25:01Speaker 6: has been disappointing.
- 25:04Speaker 2: I don't know. I, It's really, it's been fun to
- 25:06Speaker 2: see some of this for the local teams and the
- 25:09Speaker 2: teams in the big 12 that you, that you pay
- 25:12Speaker 2: attention to.
- 25:12Speaker 1: You watch a little bit.
- 25:14Speaker 2: Because I, I am, I have always been defense wins
- 25:18Speaker 2: championships over index on your defense, get your best recruits
- 25:21Speaker 2: on defense. When NIL came into play, pay those guys pay.
- 25:25Speaker 5: Yes.
- 25:25Speaker 2: Pay a quarterback, but you better have corners. You better
- 25:28Speaker 2: have pass rushers. You better have a good linebacker too.
- 25:31Speaker 2: And that is always going to be the case, but man,
- 25:37Speaker 2: I dare I say maybe the best version of, of
- 25:43Speaker 2: a college football team. Now is you have a star
- 25:45Speaker 2: quarterback and you have a bunch of guys on defense
- 25:49Speaker 2: that are like really good, but you don't have to
- 25:52Speaker 2: know their names. You don't have to talk about them
- 25:55Speaker 2: in the highlight package every Saturday, eight, seven, seven, three, five, three,
- 26:01Speaker 2: zero 700.
- 26:02Speaker 1: If you want to weigh in, it's been an interesting time.
- 26:08Speaker 2: Clint says the Cougars have been built since the defensive
- 26:10Speaker 2: side of the ball since Jay Hill got there.
- 26:13Speaker 1: Yeah, that's what we just said.
- 26:17Speaker 2: You go back in the annals of BYU Cougar history,
- 26:22Speaker 2: even when Bronco Mendenhall... who is a great defensive mind
- 26:25Speaker 2: and is a great defensive coach. Bronco Mendenhall was still
- 26:29Speaker 2: breaking BYU while he had awesome defensive players and had
- 26:33Speaker 2: some really potent defenses. He was still breaking BYU out
- 26:37Speaker 2: of this. Like our quarterback has to be the driving
- 26:41Speaker 2: force behind everything we do. And by the way, he
- 26:45Speaker 2: had some really rough years when it came to quarterback
- 26:48Speaker 2: evaluation and putting his team in the best situation with
- 26:51Speaker 2: quarterback play. Maybe that's just a defensive coach's thing. All right,
- 26:58Speaker 2: we're going to stay on clock today. We're going to
- 27:00Speaker 2: stay on time because we've got Devin Dampier joining us
- 27:04Speaker 2: live next. Edition with Dev, a Wednesday edition. Ashley West,
- 27:11Speaker 2: Utah volleyball player at noon.

- 27:38Speaker 5: Utes and your home for football. ESPN 792.1 FM.
- 27:45Speaker 1: Welcome back to the Sean O'Connell Show.
- 27:47Speaker 2: Welcome in QB number one at the University of Utah,
- 27:49Speaker 2: Devin Dampier, signal caller leader for a 5-0 Utah football team.
- 27:56Speaker 1: Dev, welcome to the show once again. How are you?
- 27:59Speaker 3: Man, doing good, doing good.
- 28:01Speaker 1: How does it feel to be 5-0?
- 28:03Speaker 3: You know, I would say it feels just about right, honestly.
- 28:11Speaker 3: It's confidence I got in my team. You know, this
- 28:13Speaker 3: is a position where we've talked about being at and,
- 28:17Speaker 3: you know, we're just going week by week and, you know,
- 28:21Speaker 3: we're doing what we.
- 28:22Speaker 1: Said we would do.
- 28:23Speaker 2: We'll look back at Kansas a little bit, look forward
- 28:26Speaker 2: to Colorado here in just a second. But did the,
- 28:29Speaker 2: did the Jayhawks surprise you at all?
- 28:33Speaker 3: Speaker 4 0 No, I thought the Jayhawks were a
- 28:35Speaker 3: pretty good team when we went in there. I mean,
- 28:37Speaker 3: they competed pretty well with even their two losses before us,
- 28:41Speaker 3: you know, they, they competed pretty well with them also. So,
- 28:46Speaker 3: you know, I knew it was going to be a
- 28:47Speaker 3: game and just have, you know, ended up turning out.
- 28:51Speaker 2: Speaker 1 0 You finished the game 23 of 30,
- 28:54Speaker 2: 238 yards, three touchdowns and an interception. I wanted to
- 29:00Speaker 2: talk to you about the efficiency of this offense, especially
- 29:04Speaker 2: in first possessions of the game.
- 29:06Speaker 1: I'm sure you're aware of this.
- 29:07Speaker 2: You all have scored a touchdown on all five of
- 29:10Speaker 2: your opening possessions. As a team, you've only trailed, I think,
- 29:14Speaker 2: for four and a half minutes, and that's because somebody
- 29:17Speaker 2: else got the ball first. When we're talking about that,
- 29:21Speaker 2: a hot start and starting off the right way with
- 29:24Speaker 2: a scoring drive and a touchdown scoring drive, not just
- 29:27Speaker 2: a field goal. What kind of tone does that set
- 29:29Speaker 2: for all of you in knowing that your preparation was,
- 29:32Speaker 2: was done the right way and knowing that the game's
- 29:35Speaker 2: going to go fine?
- 29:35Speaker 3: Speaker 4 05, 06, 07, 08.
- 29:38Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 29:38Speaker 3: And you know, I, and you know, that's something that
- 29:40Speaker 3: doesn't get talked about a lot, but yeah, I do
- 29:42Speaker 3: love the way we start on both sides of the ball.
- 29:46Speaker 3: You know, normally when defense goes out there first, they
- 29:48Speaker 3: normally get us a good position where maybe we're starting
- 29:50Speaker 3: at the 35. So, I mean, they shorten the distance
- 29:54Speaker 3: for us to have to march down there. And just
- 29:56Speaker 3: as offense, you know, we take it a little bit
- 29:58Speaker 3: personal when a team feels good about giving us the
- 30:00Speaker 3: ball first. You know, a lot of teams do that.
- 30:03Speaker 3: So their defense gets out there and gets a stop.
- 30:05Speaker 3: But we definitely take it personal. I'm like, all right, better.
- 30:09Speaker 3: You want our offense out there first, we're going to
- 30:10Speaker 3: make you pay for it. And that's just the mentality.
- 30:13Speaker 2: I like that that's the mentality because. That's not why
- 30:17Speaker 2: they're doing it. They're doing it so they can get
- 30:19Speaker 2: the first possession of the second half, but you guys
- 30:22Speaker 2: turn it into motivation.
- 30:24Speaker 3: Yeah, no doubt.
- 30:26Speaker 1: All right.
- 30:26Speaker 2: So tell me what you saw from Ricky Johnson. He
- 30:31Speaker 2: went in practice and in the game this week to
- 30:34Speaker 2: where you felt like maybe this was going to be
- 30:35Speaker 2: his breakout day.
- 30:36Speaker 1: And it was five catches, 104 yards and a touchdown.
- 30:41Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, Ricky's been grooving himself for a long
- 30:44Speaker 3: time now. I'm pretty sure there's an interview of me
- 30:46Speaker 3: saying Ricky was someone that I thought was impressive in
- 30:51Speaker 3: the spring and fall, and so did Scali. He brought
- 30:54Speaker 3: him up in the fall. Also, just some players that
- 30:57Speaker 3: were going to end up emerging at some point this year.
- 31:00Speaker 3: I'm just happy to see, you know, Rick. Rick's been
- 31:03Speaker 3: working to have those opportunities, and, I mean, he made
- 31:06Speaker 3: the most of every single ball that came his way.
- 31:08Speaker 3: The only one he didn't catch is him– going for
- 31:12Speaker 3: getting the PI call. So just when the ball goes
- 31:15Speaker 3: his way, you know, he's, he's doing a pretty good
- 31:16Speaker 3: job with making the most out of his opportunities.
- 31:31Speaker 2: And they were like, oh,
- 31:34Speaker 2: we just talked to Ricky Johnson.
- 31:35Speaker 1: And Morgan was like, did he say anything? Cause he's
- 31:37Speaker 1: a quiet kid.
- 31:38Speaker 2: So, so Rick, he didn't seem like he was a
- 31:42Speaker 2: quiet kid when they were doing the interview with him.
- 31:44Speaker 2: But then Morgan was like, yeah, he never says anything.
- 31:47Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah. So Ricky, Ricky's like the ultimate, like dude,
- 31:53Speaker 3: you can't get the talk unless like he feels ultimately comfortable.
- 31:57Speaker 3: Like he's I've never, I've never heard Ricky talk before
- 32:00Speaker 3: we went to our Arizona trip. Like I probably heard
- 32:03Speaker 3: Ricky say 10 words the whole entire spring. And then
- 32:07Speaker 3: that summer when like, we, you know, we kind of
- 32:09Speaker 3: forced him to be with all of us Seven days straight. And,
- 32:14Speaker 3: you know, by day two, like, Ricky was starting conversations.
- 32:17Speaker 3: It was funny to see, like, him open up. So
- 32:21Speaker 3: I think I've built that comfortableness with him where, you know,
- 32:24Speaker 3: he talks to me. We've been playing Fortnite now. I've
- 32:26Speaker 3: been getting on the game with him. But, yeah, Ricky's
- 32:29Speaker 3: a character, bro.
- 32:30Speaker 5: I love him.
- 32:32Speaker 2: Got a lot of talent in that wide receiver room.
- 32:34Speaker 2: As we have talked about a lot, Ricky with five
- 32:37Speaker 2: catches BP with seven for 72 Creed, Whittemore got involved.
- 32:41Speaker 2: You got the ball to Noah, Benny Daniel Bray, but
- 32:43Speaker 2: the one that really got the fan base going was
- 32:47Speaker 2: a one yard pass to semi semi tell long on that,
- 32:52Speaker 2: that option play. You pull the ball and you throw
- 32:55Speaker 2: the touchdown pass. And it was like, I mean, that
- 32:58Speaker 2: was a crucial, crucial moment in the game. Kansas, to
- 33:02Speaker 2: their credit, had made it a game, and you guys
- 33:05Speaker 2: needed to score there, and you needed to convert on
- 33:07Speaker 2: fourth down. And the play call gives you the option
- 33:11Speaker 2: to throw to big number 99.
- 33:13Speaker 1: Tell me what you saw. Tell me about the read and,
- 33:16Speaker 1: of course, the result. Yeah.
- 33:19Speaker 3: Man, there's a point where I handed off to me–
- 33:23Speaker 3: a run play and he went for a yard and
- 33:26Speaker 3: the crowd got real loud. So when we got to
- 33:29Speaker 3: that fourth down and I knew send me at a
- 33:30Speaker 3: chance to get in the ball, I was like, I
- 33:32Speaker 3: kind of already knew, like I, I seen him already
- 33:34Speaker 3: score it in my head. Like, oh, the crowd, let
- 33:36Speaker 3: the crowd up and see, send me score a touchdown. But, um, Matt, Maggie,
- 33:42Speaker 3: he talked to us after he was like, You know,
- 33:44Speaker 3: four down, me calling that. He said it with confidence
- 33:48Speaker 3: to the coaches, like, yeah, let's run that. And then
- 33:50Speaker 3: after he put the mic down, he was like, all right.
- 33:53Speaker 3: So he told us after the game, it was hilarious.
- 33:57Speaker 3: We all laughed, and then the offense would beat it. But, yeah, no,
- 34:01Speaker 3: perfect call, honestly. being so close in there, you know, they,
- 34:06Speaker 3: they sleep on those guys being able to catch the ball.
- 34:08Speaker 3: So it all worked out.
- 34:17Speaker 2: .
- 34:18Speaker 3: .
- 34:20Speaker 1: .
- 34:24Speaker 3: Wade's
- 34:27Speaker 3: been playing tremendous. It's so stuffed on. You know, there's
- 34:31Speaker 3: a lot of stuff, a lot of good plays where
- 34:33Speaker 3: the whole line makes holes for him, and there's also
- 34:36Speaker 3: plays where Wade's getting touched minus one and somehow turn
- 34:39Speaker 3: it into an AR game. And I'm like, I've been
- 34:41Speaker 3: telling him, just keep that up, bro. We, we need it.
- 34:45Speaker 3: We're feeding off of it. So, and that's, that's exactly
- 34:48Speaker 3: how semi you had opened. I mean, Wade's playing his
- 34:50Speaker 3: heart out. Those guys respect him running the ball. And
- 34:54Speaker 3: he just opened up the office for other people as well.
- 34:55Speaker 2: Speaker 0 7, if you had given it, he would've
- 34:57Speaker 2: got in the bill Riley.
- 34:59Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 35:00Speaker 1: Bill Riley on the radio call actually thought you had
- 35:02Speaker 1: given it.
- 35:02Speaker 2: He called it a touchdown for a way shot and
- 35:04Speaker 2: had to go back and the backtrack and correct himself.
- 35:07Speaker 2: And everyone was happy to see semi, but as long
- 35:09Speaker 2: as we're talking about way, Sean, there's a, there's a
- 35:12Speaker 2: scenario in this game where your defense gets a much
- 35:15Speaker 2: needed stop and it's still close. And the outcome is
- 35:19Speaker 2: at least on some level, still up in doubt. And
- 35:21Speaker 2: now you are all you're backed up against your own
- 35:23Speaker 2: end zone. You're, you know, you're standing in the North
- 35:26Speaker 2: end zone when you're taking these snaps or when you're
- 35:28Speaker 2: dropping back. what are your thoughts and what is the
- 35:32Speaker 2: conversation like with your teammates when you're backed up and
- 35:34Speaker 2: you got to go 99 yards to get the score?
- 35:38Speaker 2: Of course, it only took a few plays. We'll get
- 35:39Speaker 2: to that here in a second. But when you're going
- 35:41Speaker 2: out there and your defense has got you that stop
- 35:43Speaker 2: and stole some of the momentum back, what were you thinking?
- 35:47Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, I just brought together the offense, and,
- 35:52Speaker 3: you know, this is our time to shine. This is when,
- 35:56Speaker 3: you know, this is when pressure hits us as offense, and,
- 35:59Speaker 3: you know, what are we going to do about it?
- 36:02Speaker 3: We've been in this situation before, you know, Coach Cowley,
- 36:05Speaker 3: puts us in a lot of situational drill throughout the year. And,
- 36:09Speaker 3: you know, we've done backed up period so many times and,
- 36:12Speaker 3: you know, we're able to get out of those on
- 36:14Speaker 3: our defense. So just the confidence we've built, we're just like, Hey,
- 36:19Speaker 3: this is, this is another, another time to be the
- 36:22Speaker 3: most efficient we can. And I thought, you know, we
- 36:24Speaker 3: did pretty well getting out of there.
- 36:25Speaker 2: Speaker 2, you got, you got the pass to the
- 36:27Speaker 2: BP for, you know, kind of get you out of
- 36:29Speaker 2: the shadow of the end zone, right.
- 36:31Speaker 1: To give you a little bit of breathing room.
- 36:33Speaker 2: And then way Sean Parker takes it 90 yards, which
- 36:36Speaker 2: it was good to see him get that one back
- 36:38Speaker 2: because a couple of weeks ago he had one that
- 36:41Speaker 2: was called back on a penalty. So big long run
- 36:43Speaker 2: from that wildcat formation for way Sean Parker.
- 36:46Speaker 1: I don't, were you on the field?
- 36:49Speaker 2: Were you, were you out at like motioned out as
- 36:51Speaker 2: a wide receiver or were you on the sideline?
- 36:54Speaker 3: Yep, yep, I was that receiver at that point.
- 36:57Speaker 1: Okay.
- 36:57Speaker 2: Now, when you're standing out there as a wide receiver
- 37:00Speaker 2: and you're watching that go, tell.
- 37:02Speaker 1: Me how it is.
- 37:05Speaker 3: In my head, I'm just always like, well, he's going
- 37:07Speaker 3: to get it. So I'm just like, I'm just like that.
- 37:10Speaker 3: But then I low-key seen him, like, I can tell
- 37:13Speaker 3: when Wade, like, sees a crease. There's like a He's
- 37:17Speaker 3: got like a movement. I've just, I've been able to
- 37:18Speaker 3: like tell where you can see a crease and he
- 37:21Speaker 3: stuck it and just hit it. And I was like, Oh,
- 37:23Speaker 3: he might be gone. And sure enough, that boy was gone.
- 37:27Speaker 2: Speaker 0 7, I'll tell you it's there's no guarantee
- 37:30Speaker 2: in today's like era of college football that even when
- 37:34Speaker 2: you get to that second level, no contact when you
- 37:37Speaker 2: got 90 yards to go, some of these DBS are
- 37:39Speaker 2: really fast.
- 37:40Speaker 1: And way. Sean's not like a long strider.
- 37:43Speaker 2: He's not a guy that we think of as like
- 37:45Speaker 2: the biggest breakout speed, but you know, he, he took
- 37:48Speaker 2: all the bad weight off himself in the off season.
- 37:51Speaker 1: No one was going to catch him.
- 37:52Speaker 2: And again, that's not like a foregone conclusion in college
- 37:55Speaker 2: football because how fast some of these corners are, nobody
- 37:59Speaker 2: was touching him.
- 38:00Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 38:01Speaker 3: I mean, the fact wave probably weighs 25, 30 pounds
- 38:04Speaker 3: more than the corners and running at the same speed
- 38:07Speaker 3: or even faster. I think he had 23 miles an hour.
- 38:10Speaker 4: Sorry.
- 38:11Speaker 3: That's where they clock.
- 38:13Speaker 1: Them at 23. Yeah.
- 38:15Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 38:16Speaker 2: He was five and like, like two 10 or whatever
- 38:19Speaker 2: he is. That's a, that's the kind of stuff. That's
- 38:21Speaker 2: the tape that NFL coaches and NFL scouts are going
- 38:23Speaker 2: to be like, yeah, let me get that guy.
- 38:26Speaker 3: Speaker 0 7th, what's funny is that was the first
- 38:27Speaker 3: time he hit that high of a number. So now
- 38:29Speaker 3: Scali's like, all right, so now we know what your
- 38:31Speaker 3: 90% is every week when you got to hit the
- 38:33Speaker 3: top three. So that has gone up.
- 38:35Speaker 2: Speaker 2 7th, that's amazing. He just hurt himself in
- 38:39Speaker 2: practice by going. Oh, Devin, Deb peers, our guests here
- 38:45Speaker 2: on the Sean O'Connell show brought to you by Culligan
- 38:47Speaker 2: water of salt Lake city, America first credit union and
- 38:50Speaker 2: Valley plumbing, heating, and cooling, dishing with dev every single
- 38:55Speaker 2: week right here on your home of the Utes.
- 38:57Speaker 1: All right.
- 38:58Speaker 2: You know, I got to do this to you. A
- 38:59Speaker 2: couple of turnovers in this game. Tell me what happened
- 39:03Speaker 2: on both of those plays.
- 39:04Speaker 4: Speaker 4 05, 06, 07, 08, 07, 08, 09, 010, 011, 012, 013, 014, 015, 016, 017, 018, 019, 020, 021, 022, 023, 024, 025, 026, 027, 028, 029, 030, 031, 032, 033, 033, 034, 035, 036, 036, 037, 037, 038, 039, 040, 040, 041, 044, 044, 045, 046.
- 39:16Speaker 3: 047, 049, 049, 050, 050, 050, 050, 050, 050, 0
- 39:18Speaker 3: back there being able to recover. So just pocket movement
- 39:22Speaker 3: definitely could have helped the first turnover. And yeah, I mean,
- 39:27Speaker 3: just the second turnover, me and BP were just on
- 39:29Speaker 3: different terms. He thought I was throwing him farther than
- 39:32Speaker 3: I was. And yeah, it just, it happens. You get
- 39:36Speaker 3: to game five, you know, I think that was the
- 39:38Speaker 3: first interception where, you know, I kind of threw one
- 39:40Speaker 3: just a not being pressured or anything. So, I mean, it, it,
- 39:45Speaker 3: it comes with the game, but you know, I think
- 39:49Speaker 3: the biggest part that I took away from that is
- 39:51Speaker 3: just how we responded, honestly, you know, gate, everything's not
- 39:56Speaker 3: going to be perfect, but the way you respond definitely
- 39:59Speaker 3: matters to me and my team. And you know, I
- 40:01Speaker 3: think we take full advantage of that.
- 40:05Speaker 2: we've talked
- 40:06Speaker 2: a little bit about your process of, of making sure
- 40:09Speaker 2: you put the bad stuff out of your mind. And
- 40:11Speaker 2: there are going to be broken plays like that. There
- 40:13Speaker 2: are going to be errant throws. There are going to
- 40:15Speaker 2: be fumbles from you or whoever else, like you have
- 40:18Speaker 2: to overcome those things in football. There is no such
- 40:21Speaker 2: thing as perfection in this game. In that particular case, right?
- 40:26Speaker 2: Do you go and you talk to BP and say, Hey,
- 40:28Speaker 2: that's not what I was doing. We got the wrong
- 40:30Speaker 2: read on each other. Do you go and take that
- 40:32Speaker 2: moment you've described by yourself and just like flush it?
- 40:35Speaker 1: In the actual game against Kansas. How did you move
- 40:38Speaker 1: on from that? That's wrong.
- 41:00Speaker 3: I don't really stress too much.
- 41:02Speaker 3: I do get a little quieter than I want to
- 41:05Speaker 3: be at times when things go bad just because I
- 41:08Speaker 3: need to breathe. I need to just reset my system.
- 41:12Speaker 3: That's how I've always got through things is just breathe,
- 41:16Speaker 3: calm down, get my heart rate back down low. So
- 41:20Speaker 3: that's a little bit of how I get, but still
- 41:23Speaker 3: learning how to be a leader at the same time,
- 41:26Speaker 3: still encouraging my team, let them know, you know, I'm
- 41:28Speaker 3: not quiet because I'm down on myself. I'm I'm quiet
- 41:31Speaker 3: because I'm, I'm calming myself down. Cause you know, there's
- 41:35Speaker 3: no need to panic mode.
- 41:37Speaker 9: Speaker 1 0 to me when I'm watching, uh, the, the,
- 41:44Speaker 9: the running version of Devin Dampier this year looks healthier.
- 41:49Speaker 2: Looks like, you know, your body moves twitchier than it
- 41:52Speaker 2: did last year for obvious reasons, because you were, you
- 41:54Speaker 2: were at this point in the season, if I'm not mistaken,
- 41:56Speaker 2: you were already dealing with some stuff last year when
- 42:00Speaker 2: you watch yourself running or when you're evaluating your tape,
- 42:04Speaker 2: 17 carries 71 yards and a touchdown in this game.
- 42:07Speaker 1: Uh, How are you evaluating yourself? What do you want
- 42:10Speaker 1: to see more of?
- 42:12Speaker 2: What are you satisfied with, et cetera, when it comes
- 42:14Speaker 2: to you running the ball, carrying the football?
- 42:18Speaker 3: Yeah. I think, you know, the mindset of the way
- 42:22Speaker 3: Maggie just calls offense and things like that is anytime
- 42:27Speaker 3: I'm running the ball, there's, there's always an option to
- 42:29Speaker 3: pass the ball. So, you know, I'm always trying to,
- 42:33Speaker 3: Just take whatever is the best opportunity, honestly. Whatever is
- 42:37Speaker 3: going to move the change, what I feel confident in,
- 42:40Speaker 3: that's the decision I make. The run game isn't as
- 42:44Speaker 3: heavy as it was last year on me. It's kind
- 42:48Speaker 3: of up to me if I choose to end up
- 42:50Speaker 3: running in those gaps or not, but... Honestly, I've been
- 42:54Speaker 3: pretty fine with the amount of hits I feel like
- 42:57Speaker 3: I've been taking. I feel like I've been taking the
- 43:00Speaker 3: safer route on getting hit this year just to prevent
- 43:04Speaker 3: the injury of sides of things because that contains a
- 43:07Speaker 3: lot of experience from last year. Just playing and running
- 43:12Speaker 3: the ball on the safer side. Also, I mean, Waysan,
- 43:16Speaker 3: I got unbelievable faith in him that he's going to
- 43:18Speaker 3: go make some out of nothing. I have full intentions
- 43:24Speaker 3: of giving the ball, whatever I can to the way.
- 43:27Speaker 2: Well, we talked about this also, like you're a football player. Ultimately,
- 43:31Speaker 2: you don't shy away from contact. You don't mind contact.
- 43:34Speaker 2: You're physically strong. So was that process of, of learning
- 43:39Speaker 2: to take the safer route? Was that a natural thing
- 43:41Speaker 2: for you? How, how much effort went into that?
- 43:48Speaker 3: I would say the injury probably did that to me.
- 43:52Speaker 3: It's one of those things where you test the limits
- 43:56Speaker 3: of something until it goes the other way. I think
- 44:01Speaker 3: that was the most severe injury I've ever had in
- 44:05Speaker 3: my career. So just having that, it definitely shifts in
- 44:09Speaker 3: my mindset where this is past spring and fall. We're
- 44:13Speaker 3: practicing diving. diving instead of sliding, especially with the, you know,
- 44:18Speaker 3: concussion things that goes on from QB sliding. We just
- 44:23Speaker 3: practice diving instead.
- 44:27Speaker 10: Taking a hit, just being more, not, not going full
- 44:31Speaker 10: head on with the head, you know, just learning to
- 44:33Speaker 10: brace the head, fall away from where you get hit
- 44:36Speaker 10: from this small, this small things like that, that can
- 44:39Speaker 10: definitely help the fall in the head.
- 44:43Speaker 1: You're listening to the Sean O'Connell Show.
- 44:45Speaker 2: Devin Dampier, starting quarterback at the University of Utah, is
- 44:48Speaker 2: our guest. Dishing with Deb, brought to you by Culligan
- 44:50Speaker 2: Water of Salt Lake City, America First Credit Union, and
- 44:53Speaker 2: Valley Plumbing, Heating, and Cooling. All right, so now it's
- 44:57Speaker 2: another road trip. Crazy, you're getting into the midpoint of
- 45:01Speaker 2: the season. This is only the second road game. You
- 45:03Speaker 2: got to go on the road to Boulder. This is
- 45:05Speaker 2: a Colorado team game. that has a lot of things
- 45:08Speaker 2: to figure out right now. There's a couple of familiar
- 45:10Speaker 2: faces on that side that we'll get to here in
- 45:12Speaker 2: just a second. But what are your initial thoughts on
- 45:17Speaker 2: this Colorado Buffaloes team, given the tape you've seen?
- 45:21Speaker 3: Yeah, I think they've been competing in their games pretty well.
- 45:26Speaker 3: I think, you know, they have times where, you know,
- 45:29Speaker 3: the game starts to get the best of them at times.
- 45:31Speaker 3: But I mean, they just came off a bye week.
- 45:34Speaker 3: You know, I think it's They got kind of rid
- 45:36Speaker 3: of a couple of players on their team and you know,
- 45:39Speaker 3: they're trying to make that shift so they can be
- 45:42Speaker 3: the most prepared going into the rest of the season.
- 45:44Speaker 3: So I'm expecting, you know, a good opponent to come
- 45:47Speaker 3: out there. And yeah, we got to put our best
- 45:51Speaker 3: foot forward when we go against them.
- 45:53Speaker 2: Speaker 0 7, former Ute, Isaac Wilson has been given
- 45:56Speaker 2: the start opposite you.
- 45:57Speaker 1: He'll be the opposing quarterback.
- 46:00Speaker 2: And in the modern era of college football, this is
- 46:03Speaker 2: a much more normal thing where you play against a
- 46:06Speaker 2: former teammate, you know, maybe every dang week in this conference.
- 46:10Speaker 2: Also Stokes is over there. What does that do? Does
- 46:14Speaker 2: that change anything? How do you react to that?
- 46:18Speaker 3: Yeah, that really changed, changed too much. Yeah. Yeah, I
- 46:25Speaker 3: honestly think it's just, it kind of just, we respect
- 46:29Speaker 3: those guys. We love those guys. You know, football, after
- 46:32Speaker 3: you've been around somebody for so long, you know, you just,
- 46:35Speaker 3: you do genuinely care for them. But, man, football is football,
- 46:38Speaker 3: you know, and they know that as well. You know,
- 46:40Speaker 3: when the time comes, we strap those helmets on. You know,
- 46:44Speaker 3: it's all about what happens on that field. And then,
- 46:46Speaker 3: you know, afterwards, we'll definitely show our love to each
- 46:49Speaker 3: other and, you know, go on.
- 46:52Speaker 2: Does Deion Sanders being the head coach change the vibe
- 46:56Speaker 2: at all?
- 46:57Speaker 1: Because, I mean, he's.
- 47:00Speaker 2: One of the greatest defensive backs of all time. He's
- 47:02Speaker 2: one of the greatest overall NFL football players of all time.
- 47:06Speaker 2: He's an icon, and he's the competition, and obviously you
- 47:10Speaker 2: don't have a ton of interaction with an opposing head coach,
- 47:13Speaker 2: but does it change anything at all for you or
- 47:15Speaker 2: any player on this team?
- 47:19Speaker 3: I don't think so.
- 47:20Speaker 5: I think, you know, we.
- 47:22Speaker 3: we, we respect, you know, anyone that's able to earn
- 47:26Speaker 3: a head coach job in college football. Um, you know, you,
- 47:29Speaker 3: you gain a kind of a lot of respect to
- 47:32Speaker 3: be in that position and, uh, do what you do. So,
- 47:35Speaker 3: you know, we, I think we treat everybody, you know,
- 47:37Speaker 3: pretty equal. Um, I think he's got an amazing career
- 47:40Speaker 3: in NFL though, no doubt. Uh, definitely respected in that area,
- 47:44Speaker 3: but just as a head coach wise, you know, we,
- 47:46Speaker 3: we respect everybody we go against. Um, It's hard to
- 47:51Speaker 3: have a job in college football. So if you have one,
- 47:54Speaker 3: you know, there's definitely respect towards your name.
- 47:57Speaker 2: We didn't talk about this yet against Kansas. The kickoff
- 48:00Speaker 2: time got moved up, which was very weird. I mean,
- 48:04Speaker 2: from the fan, even from like, just, I'm going to
- 48:07Speaker 2: go to the game perspective. It was strange because you have,
- 48:10Speaker 2: you know, your, your routine already pictured in your mind that,
- 48:13Speaker 2: And again, not as a player, just as a person, like,
- 48:15Speaker 2: all right, I'm going to take the kids to do this.
- 48:17Speaker 2: And then I'm going to put them to bed and
- 48:19Speaker 2: then I'm going to get to the game and it'll
- 48:20Speaker 2: be perfect timing. And then you get a text or
- 48:23Speaker 2: a tweet and it's like, Nope, moving this thing up
- 48:25Speaker 2: to avoid the bad weather.
- 48:27Speaker 1: What did that do to you guys?
- 48:28Speaker 2: Because obviously it's scheduled out a lot more carefully for
- 48:33Speaker 2: players than it is for fans. And you got late
- 48:35Speaker 2: notice that this kickoff was being pushed up.
- 48:38Speaker 1: How was it handled?
- 48:42Speaker 3: I think it was honestly fine. You know, it ain't
- 48:46Speaker 3: the team. It's a late starter. I won't say it's not,
- 48:50Speaker 3: but for it to get moved up to sixes, it's like, okay, bad.
- 48:54Speaker 3: We just, for us, it just became, we had less
- 48:57Speaker 3: time at the hotel of off time. That's really all
- 49:02Speaker 3: that kind of broke down. We had, we had like
- 49:05Speaker 3: about two hours of off time at the hotel instead
- 49:08Speaker 3: of we would have had four if it was at eight.
- 49:10Speaker 3: So yeah, I'm not, not too different with that timing.
- 49:14Speaker 3: Speaker 2, I was a skeptic.
- 49:19Speaker 1: I'm, I'm superstitious. So I was like, I don't know
- 49:21Speaker 1: about a whiteout.
- 49:22Speaker 2: In a night game and ultimately looked great.
- 49:25Speaker 1: You guys look great.
- 49:26Speaker 2: The whole team played great. You got the wind. That's
- 49:29Speaker 2: all that really matters. What'd you make of the whiteout?
- 49:33Speaker 2: First one at rice echo stadium at night.
- 49:37Speaker 3: Yeah, I was excited when they got presented and especially
- 49:40Speaker 3: seeing the helmets, like, like a whole, like two months ago,
- 49:43Speaker 3: it was like, and then, you know, Scali asked for
- 49:46Speaker 3: some of our preferences on what we had changed and stuff.
- 49:48Speaker 3: And I felt like, you know, as guys, we were
- 49:51Speaker 3: able to make the helmet just slightly better. And it
- 49:54Speaker 3: was already, it was already tough, but. Tell me the changes.
- 49:56Speaker 2: Tell me the artistic changes. our expression of Devin Dampier. What, what,
- 50:03Speaker 2: what made that helmet better? What did you bring in that,
- 50:05Speaker 2: that maybe we would not have seen if it weren't
- 50:08Speaker 2: for your opinions?
- 50:10Speaker 3: I think the, the original, the original, the helmet was
- 50:14Speaker 3: a little bit more gray. So it, it stood out
- 50:17Speaker 3: from the white. So we wanted it to flow better
- 50:21Speaker 3: with all white uniforms. So we, we had them lightened
- 50:24Speaker 3: lighten the gray of the, which was like the main
- 50:28Speaker 3: color of the helmet was kind of grayish.
- 50:30Speaker 1: Okay.
- 50:31Speaker 3: So we just, we kind of made that the white
- 50:33Speaker 3: and then made everything else the gray to pop out
- 50:37Speaker 3: and stuff like that. But the red, the red U
- 50:41Speaker 3: was on there already. Um, there's a couple, I think
- 50:45Speaker 3: there was some on the back that we took off
- 50:47Speaker 3: maybe just to add more snow, the snow falling on
- 50:50Speaker 3: the helmet. But yeah, it was, it was already kind
- 50:53Speaker 3: of there. We just, we just, a little dab in it.
- 50:55Speaker 1: All right. Well, they looked great. Now somebody texted this.
- 50:59Speaker 2: We were, we were talking about this, I think on Monday,
- 51:02Speaker 2: do you get to, if, if Devin Dampier wants to
- 51:04Speaker 2: keep his hand painted, you know, special edition helmet, do
- 51:08Speaker 2: you get to keep that and put it in the
- 51:09Speaker 2: home office?
- 51:10Speaker 11: Speaker 4 05.
- 51:12Speaker 3: 06, 07, 08, 09, 010 for the previous years, the
- 51:13Speaker 3: players have had the, we've had the biome if we want,
- 51:17Speaker 3: if we want the helmets or not. But I mean, they're,
- 51:21Speaker 3: they're at a pretty affordable price for us to be
- 51:23Speaker 3: able to get them. So I think, I think this
- 51:25Speaker 3: might be the helmet I do buy the first light out.
- 51:30Speaker 3: Definitely is going to have to happen. All right.
- 51:31Speaker 2: You already had that plan for like, where are you
- 51:33Speaker 2: going to like keep all this stuff? Do you already
- 51:35Speaker 2: have a spot in the house where you keep your memorabilia?
- 51:38Speaker 2: You're just at the beginning of this whole journey where,
- 51:40Speaker 2: you know, you're going to have NFL jerseys and all
- 51:41Speaker 2: that stuff to worry about.
- 51:42Speaker 1: But do you, do you already know what that looks
- 51:45Speaker 1: like in your mind?
- 51:48Speaker 3: You know, I got an idea. You know, it's hard
- 51:52Speaker 3: to exactly make one of those right now when you're, like,
- 51:55Speaker 3: living in it, if that makes sense.
- 51:57Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 51:59Speaker 3: Like, when I get the helmet, I'm going to be like,
- 52:01Speaker 3: I just wore it. So, like, it isn't going to be, like,
- 52:03Speaker 3: that cool yet. But then, like, yeah, when I get,
- 52:06Speaker 3: I don't know, second, third year in my NFL career,
- 52:09Speaker 3: then it's going to be like, when I see the
- 52:11Speaker 3: helmet and I walk back to my house, it's going
- 52:13Speaker 3: to be like, yeah, that was tough.
- 52:14Speaker 1: All right. Well, when you get it, bring it into
- 52:16Speaker 1: the studio with you next time. We'll keep it for you.
- 52:18Speaker 5: No problem.
- 52:19Speaker 1: We'll put it back in behind me on the, on
- 52:21Speaker 1: the YouTube.
- 52:25Speaker 5: Perfect.
- 52:27Speaker 1: Deb, good luck. Stay healthy in Colorado. Thanks for joining us.
- 52:30Speaker 2: I know the schedule gets a little bit crazy sometimes,
- 52:32Speaker 2: and we appreciate you making time and.
- 52:35Speaker 1: We'll talk to you soon.
- 52:37Speaker 3: You know it. Appreciate you.
- 52:39Speaker 1: That is Devin Dampier.
- 52:40Speaker 2: Edition with Dev is brought to you by Culligan Water
- 52:42Speaker 2: of Salt Lake City, America First Credit Union, and Valley Plumbing, Heating,
- 52:47Speaker 2: and Cooling.
- 52:47Speaker 1: You just can't help but love the guy. Great player.
- 52:53Speaker 1: Awesome dude.
- 52:55Speaker 2: And apparently, he's got a nice aesthetic sense that maybe
- 52:59Speaker 2: saved us from gray helmets and got your white-out helmets
- 53:02Speaker 2: to be truly white. This year with Deb, that conversation
- 53:07Speaker 2: will be available on the ESPN 700 Sports app and
- 53:11Speaker 2: on the ESPN700Sports. com website. All right, Ashley West, Utah volleyball hitter,
- 53:18Speaker 2: is going to join us next. Utah Volleyball is hosting
- 53:22Speaker 2: BYU tomorrow night at the Huntsman Center. It's a red
- 53:26Speaker 2: out where red packed the Huntsman. It is a rivalry match.
- 53:29Speaker 2: This is a really interesting, really fascinating matchup in Big
- 53:34Speaker 2: 12 Volleyball that has some national implications as well. We'll
- 53:37Speaker 2: talk about all of it with Ashley West when we
- 53:39Speaker 2: come back on the Sean O'Connell Show.
- 53:41Speaker 1: ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 53:47Speaker 5: You're tuned to the Sean O'Connell Show from the Murdoch
- 53:50Speaker 5: Chevrolet studio of ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 54:00Speaker 1: James, you got us coming in with some spooky tunes.
- 54:03Speaker 1: It's October. Spooky season. We're doing spooky season already? Try
- 54:08Speaker 1: and do one a day. in October.
- 54:10Speaker 6: We did that with Christmas last year.
- 54:13Speaker 1: Why not? 877-353-0700.
- 54:17Speaker 2: You can send in your spooky music request to James
- 54:20Speaker 2: Peterson on the text line. Welcome to our number two
- 54:23Speaker 2: on the Sean O'Connell show. Welcome in from your Utah
- 54:26Speaker 2: volleyball team, Ashley West, uh, outside hitter and oppo hitter.
- 54:31Speaker 1: We'll talk about that with her. Ashley, welcome to the show.
- 54:33Speaker 1: How are you?
- 54:35Speaker 3: I'm good. I'm good. Thanks for having me on. I'm
- 54:37Speaker 3: super excited.
- 54:38Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 54:38Speaker 1: We appreciate you joining us here for a minute.
- 54:41Speaker 2: BYU tomorrow night at the Huntsman center at seven read out.
- 54:45Speaker 1: Everybody get there.
- 54:46Speaker 2: Utah tickets.com slash volleyball. Get the tickets. They're running specials
- 54:52Speaker 2: right now. Great family activity. Get all the kids out there.
- 54:55Speaker 2: Make some noise as Utah hosts BYU. And Ashley, obviously
- 55:00Speaker 2: this is a big one. This is a nationally ranked
- 55:02Speaker 2: BYU team. You guys are right up there in that
- 55:04Speaker 2: conversation as well. And you don't tell me what the
- 55:07Speaker 2: expectation is. Tell me what your thoughts are heading into
- 55:10Speaker 2: this match.
- 55:12Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 55:12Speaker 12: I mean, we're excited, you know, it's easy to get
- 55:14Speaker 12: fired up for this game. We play them year round
- 55:18Speaker 12: in the spring, but for sure, now that we're back
- 55:19Speaker 12: in the same conference, it's just, it's really easy to get,
- 55:22Speaker 12: like I said, fired up to play them. They're playing
- 55:24Speaker 12: some really good volleyball right now, but I mean, so
- 55:26Speaker 12: are we. So I'm just excited to get out there
- 55:29Speaker 12: and compete. You know, we've got a lot of key
- 55:30Speaker 12: components this year. And yeah, I mean, I think it's
- 55:34Speaker 12: just get to that first whistle and just let it roll.
- 55:36Speaker 3: So yeah, we're excited.
- 55:38Speaker 12: We're really excited to have them at home first and
- 55:40Speaker 12: then we'll go down there in a couple of weeks,
- 55:42Speaker 12: but to get them in the Huntsman center first in
- 55:44Speaker 12: front of our home crowd last year, we set an
- 55:46Speaker 12: attendance record.
- 55:47Speaker 3: So we'd like to do that again.
- 55:48Speaker 12: And yeah, just, I guess beat them on our own
- 55:52Speaker 12: court first.
- 55:54Speaker 2: What are they best at? What's, what's the biggest threat
- 55:56Speaker 2: from this BYU team right now?
- 55:59Speaker 3: They're pretty good offensively.
- 56:01Speaker 12: They've got a lot of powerhouse attackers who swing with
- 56:04Speaker 12: a lot of pace and who are very physical.
- 56:07Speaker 3: They move the ball around.
- 56:09Speaker 12: So it'll be good for us, for our eyes defensively
- 56:12Speaker 12: to face attackers who see the ball, see the court,
- 56:15Speaker 12: have really good vision, and play volleyball at just a
- 56:17Speaker 12: really high level. So we're anticipating to get into a
- 56:20Speaker 12: lot of long rallies with them. They're good defensively too.
- 56:23Speaker 12: They're a very sound team. It hats off to them
- 56:27Speaker 12: and the training they've been doing in the spring this year.
- 56:30Speaker 12: that they just, they're going to bring their best. And
- 56:32Speaker 12: like I said, their, their attackers just moved the ball
- 56:34Speaker 12: around really well. So we've been talking about this digging in,
- 56:37Speaker 12: in long rallies against them, moving the ball around when
- 56:40Speaker 12: we send it back their way and just competing.
- 56:44Speaker 2: I feel like you're an athlete who understands rivalries probably
- 56:47Speaker 2: better than a lot of people. If you don't know,
- 56:50Speaker 2: Ashley's dad, a Colorado Buffalo mom, a Nebraska Cornhusker. So
- 56:56Speaker 2: I imagine that was a conversation at some point during
- 56:59Speaker 2: your childhood. So we'll start there. Like rivalry games. I
- 57:04Speaker 2: love the BYU-Utah rivalry game. It's one of the most
- 57:07Speaker 2: unique in the whole country. I don't know it from
- 57:09Speaker 2: the volleyball perspective, but is that accurate? Were you raised
- 57:12Speaker 2: with a deep understanding of what rivalries in sports are
- 57:15Speaker 2: actually supposed to be?
- 57:16Speaker 3: Oh my gosh.
- 57:17Speaker 8: Yes.
- 57:18Speaker 12: I mean, the CU Nebraska rivalry ran deep in my family.
- 57:22Speaker 12: My cousin on my mom's side then went to Nebraska
- 57:24Speaker 12: to play football. And the first time I saw my
- 57:27Speaker 12: dad in Nebraska Jersey, I thought like, I thought the
- 57:29Speaker 12: world was ending. I thought the sky was falling, but
- 57:33Speaker 12: he'll tell you that he was just very supporting Kenny.
- 57:35Speaker 12: But yeah, no, I mean, It's just the greatest thing
- 57:38Speaker 12: that comes with college sports. It's so cool to be
- 57:40Speaker 12: a part of a school that has such a big
- 57:42Speaker 12: rivalry and it gets the people going. There's nothing better
- 57:46Speaker 12: than just a good old rivalry game. Being raised in
- 57:49Speaker 12: that kind of environment in my own household and definitely
- 57:52Speaker 12: within my family as well, it's just special. You just
- 57:56Speaker 12: understand a little bit more. And now, now that I've
- 57:58Speaker 12: been at Utah for a while and I've, you know,
- 58:01Speaker 12: spent a lot of time here and this is where
- 58:03Speaker 12: I've kind of planted my roots. I, I kind of
- 58:05Speaker 12: feel that rivalry in my freshman year.
- 58:06Speaker 3: I kind of was like, no, you know, whatever. Okay.
- 58:08Speaker 3: Utah BYU.
- 58:09Speaker 12: But now that I've been here for so long and
- 58:11Speaker 12: I have so much pride to be a youth and
- 58:13Speaker 12: I know how much the rivalry means not only to me,
- 58:15Speaker 12: but all the players and coaches who have come through
- 58:18Speaker 12: this program before me, I just can't wait to go
- 58:20Speaker 12: out and represent that as well.
- 58:21Speaker 3: Tomorrow night.
- 58:22Speaker 2: How long did it take? Was it like, your freshman
- 58:25Speaker 2: season that gave you that wake up? Because I don't
- 58:27Speaker 2: expect that someone who's, who's raised out of state understands
- 58:31Speaker 2: like the nuance and the venom and some of the
- 58:33Speaker 2: stuff with this rivalry, but how long does it take
- 58:35Speaker 2: for an out of state player to really absorb it
- 58:38Speaker 2: and start to realize what it means?
- 58:42Speaker 12: I would say pretty quickly. I mean, the upper class
- 58:44Speaker 12: and on my, on my team, my freshman year, they
- 58:47Speaker 12: let me know what kind of monster the rivalry game is.
- 58:50Speaker 12: And that was when we were back in the PAC 12.
- 58:51Speaker 12: So the, we didn't have the in-conference rivalry, you know,
- 58:54Speaker 12: and I feel like that adds a whole nother layer
- 58:56Speaker 12: to it. Cause now we're talking about conference standings. They're
- 58:59Speaker 12: in the running for the top spot in the conference
- 59:01Speaker 12: right now. We are too. And yes, it's early in the.
- 59:03Speaker 3: Conference, but you just, you add the the.
- 59:05Speaker 12: Layer being in the big 12 together and it just
- 59:07Speaker 12: adds so much more but I would say yeah probably
- 59:09Speaker 12: right after that first game my freshman year I was
- 59:11Speaker 12: like okay I get it now I'm locked in we
- 59:14Speaker 12: don't we don't wear blue we don't talk about the
- 59:16Speaker 12: color blue we don't talk about the why any of
- 59:18Speaker 12: that stuff up here so I mean with all due
- 59:20Speaker 12: respect it's fun every single time to them um and
- 59:23Speaker 12: to play against them so yeah I would say probably
- 59:25Speaker 12: right after my freshman year I was like okay I
- 59:27Speaker 12: get it I get it and I'm bought into it
- 59:28Speaker 12: and I love it I.
- 59:30Speaker 2: Want to talk about you individually here on the roster.
- 59:34Speaker 2: You're listed as both outside and oppo hitter. And for
- 59:37Speaker 2: the uninitiated volleyball people, tell me what it means to
- 59:42Speaker 2: have to do both of those at a.
- 59:44Speaker 1: Very high level.
- 59:46Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 59:46Speaker 12: I mean, so I came in, I was recruited as
- 59:48Speaker 12: an outside. I spent my, my, I guess my junior
- 59:52Speaker 12: years playing on the outside, which is the left side
- 59:56Speaker 12: playing six rotations. So I would play in the back
- 59:58Speaker 12: row and pass play server sees play defense. And then
- 1:00:02Speaker 12: when I got here, my freshman year, it was kind
- 1:00:04Speaker 12: of just what the team needed at the time was,
- 1:00:06Speaker 12: was someone on the right, which is essentially, you know,
- 1:00:09Speaker 12: same position, just opposite side of the court. You definitely
- 1:00:13Speaker 12: see the court differently and kind of the volume you
- 1:00:15Speaker 12: carry is a little bit different, but from a hitting perspective, perspective.
- 1:00:19Speaker 12: It's just see ball, move the ball around and hit
- 1:00:21Speaker 12: it hard. So it was an easier transition than I
- 1:00:24Speaker 12: kind of thought it was going to be at first.
- 1:00:25Speaker 12: And just through my time here at Utah, I've kind
- 1:00:28Speaker 12: of bounced back and forth. And something that I love about,
- 1:00:31Speaker 12: about this program is they continue to, to develop us
- 1:00:33Speaker 12: as players through our time here. So I haven't gone
- 1:00:36Speaker 12: totally away from the outside. I mean, I'm still training,
- 1:00:39Speaker 12: passing and defense every single day. That's something coach Alyssa
- 1:00:42Speaker 12: is very, very, I mean, she just holds a lot
- 1:00:45Speaker 12: of weight to that is developing her players as, as
- 1:00:49Speaker 12: all around volleyball players and not just a skill specific athletes.
- 1:00:52Speaker 12: So right now my role for this year's team and
- 1:00:56Speaker 12: where I've been training and spending my time is on
- 1:00:58Speaker 12: the opposite. And I've loved that and I've been having
- 1:01:00Speaker 12: a ton of fun. But yeah, so I just, we,
- 1:01:03Speaker 12: they listed both just cause I've kind of been 50
- 1:01:06Speaker 12: 50 with my time here at Utah and it's been great.
- 1:01:10Speaker 2: Ashley West is our guest here on the Sean O'Connell show.
- 1:01:14Speaker 2: Utah Volleyball hosting BYU tomorrow night. Get there to the
- 1:01:18Speaker 2: Huntsman Center for a redout. Tickets are on sale right
- 1:01:21Speaker 2: now at utahutes.com. Pack this place out as it's a
- 1:01:26Speaker 2: ranked BYU team coming in to the Huntsman Center. So
- 1:01:31Speaker 2: back to this matchup and I guess where it falls
- 1:01:34Speaker 2: in the season.
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: I don't know how much momentum is emphasized.
- 1:01:39Speaker 2: We were talking about this with the football game last
- 1:01:41Speaker 2: week at Bryce Eccles and how there was big momentum
- 1:01:44Speaker 2: swings in that game. And depending on what athlete you
- 1:01:47Speaker 2: talk to and what sport, right, there's the momentum in
- 1:01:49Speaker 2: the moments and in the games and then the momentum
- 1:01:51Speaker 2: of the season. And you're coming off a couple of
- 1:01:54Speaker 2: big wins, 3-0 over Kansas State, 3-0 over West Virginia.
- 1:01:59Speaker 2: Do you believe that you guys can carry some of
- 1:02:01Speaker 2: that momentum in against BYU, or do you have to
- 1:02:04Speaker 2: take it as its own thing?
- 1:02:07Speaker 12: I think a little bit of both. I think we
- 1:02:08Speaker 12: have a lot of momentum just from the past two
- 1:02:11Speaker 12: games that you just mentioned, but also this season itself
- 1:02:15Speaker 12: has been kind of, we've been just taking it one
- 1:02:17Speaker 12: day at a time. And, you know, we've got a
- 1:02:19Speaker 12: really unique group this year who's very motivated and very hungry.
- 1:02:23Speaker 12: So I think not only the past few games, but
- 1:02:25Speaker 12: also just taking a set off of pit and playing
- 1:02:27Speaker 12: some really high level competition throughout our season so far
- 1:02:31Speaker 12: with pit being ranked number two in the nation, being
- 1:02:34Speaker 12: able to take a set off of them was something
- 1:02:36Speaker 12: we definitely added to our little confidence piggy bank. But yeah,
- 1:02:40Speaker 12: I mean, I think not only the momentum from the
- 1:02:42Speaker 12: past few games, but also the fact that, you know,
- 1:02:45Speaker 12: we reverse swept them at home last year, the year
- 1:02:47Speaker 12: prior to that, we swept them at home. So just
- 1:02:49Speaker 12: kind of knowing what, what we're capable of doing on
- 1:02:53Speaker 12: our home floor and in front of our own fans and, and, Yeah,
- 1:02:56Speaker 12: I think just kind of using it all as momentum,
- 1:02:58Speaker 12: like you said, and just using it as confidence to
- 1:03:00Speaker 12: fuel ourselves to get ready to go at 7 p.m.
- 1:03:02Speaker 3: Tomorrow night.
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: Big picture.
- 1:03:04Speaker 2: Your volleyball program is in a similar state of what
- 1:03:08Speaker 2: football was in where, you know, longtime head coach steps
- 1:03:11Speaker 2: away and new young coach comes in first year, you know,
- 1:03:17Speaker 2: kind of steering the ship. Despite having deep awareness of
- 1:03:20Speaker 2: what this program is, it changes the role. or coach Dorico, what,
- 1:03:25Speaker 2: what has been the most noticeable change? Has there been
- 1:03:28Speaker 2: a big shift in any of your preparation schedule?
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: Is it more of the same or is it more different?
- 1:03:34Speaker 2: Give me a sense of, of what it's like having
- 1:03:36Speaker 2: a new head coach at this point in your career.
- 1:03:39Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:03:40Speaker 12: I mean, there's definitely some differences that, you know, that,
- 1:03:43Speaker 12: that we saw, but for the most part, I think
- 1:03:45Speaker 12: the coolest thing that I've been able to notice and
- 1:03:47Speaker 12: really buy into this season is coach Alyssa has been
- 1:03:51Speaker 12: always pride of herself on her authenticity and how she
- 1:03:54Speaker 12: shows up the same every single day. She did that
- 1:03:57Speaker 12: when she was in the associate head coach role. And
- 1:03:59Speaker 12: that hasn't changed, even though her title changed. And even
- 1:04:01Speaker 12: though she stepped into this head coaching position and taken
- 1:04:04Speaker 12: over this program. So I think that's, That was the
- 1:04:06Speaker 12: biggest part that I was looking for as the transition happened.
- 1:04:10Speaker 12: And I mean, she just has stayed true to her
- 1:04:12Speaker 12: own colors and, and shows up the same and really
- 1:04:15Speaker 12: just cause she loves us and she loves the sport
- 1:04:18Speaker 12: and she loves to grow the sport. And I think
- 1:04:20Speaker 12: that's just one of the biggest lessons that if anything,
- 1:04:22Speaker 12: she can teach to all of us is that no
- 1:04:24Speaker 12: matter how, how your day is going or the title
- 1:04:27Speaker 12: you hold next to your name, just show it for
- 1:04:28Speaker 12: the people around you. And there's going to be a
- 1:04:30Speaker 12: lot of reward from that.
- 1:04:32Speaker 2: We had her on a couple of weeks ago and
- 1:04:34Speaker 2: she was, she was bragging on you guys and some
- 1:04:35Speaker 2: of the athletes in that program.
- 1:04:37Speaker 1: Uh, what's your vertical Ashley?
- 1:04:41Speaker 12: Oh, I touched 10, five. So I don't know what
- 1:04:48Speaker 12: she was saying, but yeah.
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: Yeah. I think she was saying, I think she was
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: saying that. So that's 10, five is up there. That's yeah.
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: Can you, can you dunk a basketball?
- 1:05:03Speaker 12: I mean, we haven't tried in a while. I haven't
- 1:05:05Speaker 12: tried since my surgeries, but I mean, I'd be willing
- 1:05:08Speaker 12: to try.
- 1:05:08Speaker 3: Maybe I could see. We'll get you a day.
- 1:05:10Speaker 1: We'll get you like a, we'll get you a mini ball,
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: make it a little bit easier with a mini ball
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: or something.
- 1:05:15Speaker 12: No, I'm getting a basketball in there for sure.
- 1:05:17Speaker 1: Okay.
- 1:05:17Speaker 2: So for, for someone like I gotta make, you gotta
- 1:05:21Speaker 2: make sure you ask these questions the right way, but
- 1:05:23Speaker 2: like for someone, for someone who has that as part
- 1:05:26Speaker 2: of their skillset, right? Like that has that elite athleticism,
- 1:05:30Speaker 2: that power, the size, right. Uh, how much do you
- 1:05:35Speaker 2: build your game around it? And how much do you
- 1:05:37Speaker 2: have to like say, no, I need to like the skill,
- 1:05:40Speaker 2: the craft has to be a point of emphasis here
- 1:05:42Speaker 2: because obviously the athleticism is what gets you a scholarship
- 1:05:46Speaker 2: and carries you to this level. But when you get
- 1:05:49Speaker 2: to the higher levels of any sport, everybody's an athlete.
- 1:05:52Speaker 2: Everybody can jump. Everybody can play everybody. Everybody's like athletic
- 1:05:56Speaker 2: to some degree. There's outliers of course, but how much
- 1:06:00Speaker 2: do you let that still be a driver in your
- 1:06:02Speaker 2: game versus like, no, that's just a, that's just a
- 1:06:06Speaker 2: happy little by-product of me being a great skilled volleyball player.
- 1:06:10Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:06:11Speaker 12: That's a good question. I, um, I've actually, um, I'll
- 1:06:14Speaker 12: just let you in on a little insight. I didn't
- 1:06:16Speaker 12: originally think I was going to play college volleyball. So
- 1:06:19Speaker 12: I didn't think I didn't really buy into the sport
- 1:06:22Speaker 12: for a while until later in my high school career.
- 1:06:25Speaker 12: So I had a lot of learning of the game
- 1:06:27Speaker 12: to do once I got to this level. And once
- 1:06:29Speaker 12: I realized how fast the game moves at this level.
- 1:06:32Speaker 12: So I spent a lot of time both when I
- 1:06:34Speaker 12: was healthy and also when I was injured, just learning
- 1:06:36Speaker 12: the game and seeing the game from different angles, understanding,
- 1:06:40Speaker 12: you know, how the ball moves and understanding, you know,
- 1:06:43Speaker 12: what the stat sheet meant and all the things that
- 1:06:46Speaker 12: come within it. So I think that my athletic ability,
- 1:06:49Speaker 12: and I'm very blessed by it, and it's definitely something
- 1:06:52Speaker 12: that I can kind of fall back to, but something
- 1:06:55Speaker 12: that I've recently taken a lot of pride in within
- 1:06:57Speaker 12: my own game is the knowledge of the game that
- 1:06:59Speaker 12: I've been able.
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: To grow from.
- 1:07:01Speaker 12: Over the past couple of years. And that comes from
- 1:07:03Speaker 12: the investment from my coaches as well, was just sitting down,
- 1:07:06Speaker 12: breaking down film, explaining things over and over again to me,
- 1:07:09Speaker 12: finding different ways to understand the game, um, has been
- 1:07:13Speaker 12: something that I've now been able to take onto the
- 1:07:15Speaker 12: court now that I'm healthy. Um, so I, yeah, I mean,
- 1:07:17Speaker 12: to answer your question, I think understanding the game and, and,
- 1:07:21Speaker 12: and learning that and understanding that, yes, I am strong
- 1:07:24Speaker 12: and physical and that is, that's a strength of mine,
- 1:07:26Speaker 12: but then learning, okay, how can I be crafty? How
- 1:07:29Speaker 12: can I move the ball around? Maybe like an undersized
- 1:07:31Speaker 12: pin attacker would, or how can I work my angle
- 1:07:34Speaker 12: with my platform to not let a deep serve beat me,
- 1:07:37Speaker 12: even though I am tall in the passing lanes. Um,
- 1:07:39Speaker 12: so yeah, I think it's a little, it's a, it's
- 1:07:41Speaker 12: a combo of both. And I think when you get
- 1:07:43Speaker 12: to this level and like you said, you're surrounded by
- 1:07:45Speaker 12: a ton of other athletes who are very strong and physical,
- 1:07:48Speaker 12: and that's a definition of our team this year, for sure. Um,
- 1:07:51Speaker 12: you've got to learn how to expand your game in
- 1:07:54Speaker 12: other ways. And for me, that's, that's really in the
- 1:07:55Speaker 12: film room.
- 1:07:57Speaker 2: Okay, forgive me for backtracking a little bit here, but
- 1:08:01Speaker 2: why did you not buy into volleyball until later in
- 1:08:04Speaker 2: your high school career?
- 1:08:07Speaker 12: I was stuck to softball. I was raised in a
- 1:08:11Speaker 12: competitive household. My parents introduced my sister and I to
- 1:08:14Speaker 12: all sports at a young age, and for a while there,
- 1:08:17Speaker 12: I just fell in love with softball.
- 1:08:18Speaker 3: I was a pitcher.
- 1:08:21Speaker 12: And a power hitter.
- 1:08:22Speaker 3: And I just loved it.
- 1:08:23Speaker 12: And I thought it was so fun. It came super
- 1:08:25Speaker 12: easy to me. I was introduced to a very high
- 1:08:28Speaker 12: level of softball at a super young age. So I
- 1:08:30Speaker 12: was from Colorado, but playing for a travel ball team
- 1:08:33Speaker 12: out of Anaheim, California and loved that and just loved
- 1:08:36Speaker 12: that experience there and got a little bit burnt out
- 1:08:40Speaker 12: summer going into my junior year. And that was when
- 1:08:42Speaker 12: I decided, well, I guess I'm tall. Maybe I could
- 1:08:44Speaker 12: put this height towards something else. And kind of just
- 1:08:47Speaker 12: fell in love with volleyball that year because it was
- 1:08:49Speaker 12: so new and it was so fresh and everyone was
- 1:08:51Speaker 12: always like high energy in the gym and just I
- 1:08:54Speaker 12: don't know just everything kind of clicked that summer going
- 1:08:56Speaker 12: into my junior year and ironically that was kind of
- 1:08:58Speaker 12: when recruiting was happening I the time. So kind of
- 1:09:01Speaker 12: made a switch transition and probably stressed my parents out
- 1:09:04Speaker 12: more than I can even imagine, but it all worked out.
- 1:09:08Speaker 12: So yeah, softball, that was where my heart was at.
- 1:09:10Speaker 2: So your parents and you invested like your entire childhood
- 1:09:14Speaker 2: of time and travel and money and energy and all
- 1:09:17Speaker 2: that stuff into softball.
- 1:09:19Speaker 1: And then volleyball ended up being the.
- 1:09:21Speaker 12: Thing for you yeah honestly yeah it's the best way
- 1:09:25Speaker 12: to put it and I'm just so grateful that my
- 1:09:27Speaker 12: parents were able to support me in both directions that
- 1:09:30Speaker 12: I wanted to go um and then I mean they
- 1:09:32Speaker 12: were my biggest supporters they believed in me like like
- 1:09:34Speaker 12: no one else and you know I had a dream
- 1:09:37Speaker 12: as a little girl to play college softball and you
- 1:09:39Speaker 12: know be one of the best pitchers in the nation
- 1:09:41Speaker 12: and they let me chase that as far as I
- 1:09:43Speaker 12: wanted to chase it and the day that I came
- 1:09:45Speaker 12: to them I was so scared but the day that
- 1:09:46Speaker 12: I came to them to tell them that maybe this
- 1:09:49Speaker 12: isn't where my heart's at and this isn't the love
- 1:09:51Speaker 12: that I have for the game anymore. They were right there,
- 1:09:54Speaker 12: big arms, ready to hug me and help me go
- 1:09:56Speaker 12: the next direction. And I was grateful enough and lucky
- 1:10:00Speaker 12: enough to be supported by amazing volleyball coaches in Colorado
- 1:10:04Speaker 12: who kind of just took me in as this raw,
- 1:10:07Speaker 12: unexperienced athlete and started to train me. And all of
- 1:10:11Speaker 12: a sudden I was... you know, getting some looks at
- 1:10:13Speaker 12: by other schools and getting recruited to a sport that
- 1:10:16Speaker 12: I honestly didn't even know much about. So yeah, that's
- 1:10:19Speaker 12: kind of why I had to. I was a late
- 1:10:22Speaker 12: bloomer to the sport, you could say.
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: That's pretty cool.
- 1:10:25Speaker 2: Which of your parents tries to claim more of your athleticism?
- 1:10:29Speaker 2: Because this is something that happens when both mom and
- 1:10:33Speaker 2: dad are athletes.
- 1:10:34Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 1:10:35Speaker 12: Oh, I don't know if they're listening or not, but
- 1:10:38Speaker 12: I would say probably my dad. Yeah, I would say
- 1:10:43Speaker 12: if you ask him, he's going to take more of
- 1:10:45Speaker 12: the more of the accountability for that. But I mean,
- 1:10:48Speaker 12: they were both such elite athletes, so it's hard to say,
- 1:10:51Speaker 12: but yeah, I'd say he probably tries to take more
- 1:10:53Speaker 12: of it.
- 1:10:54Speaker 2: Okay. I, I, I've talked about this on my radio
- 1:10:57Speaker 2: show a lot of times. And like, of course, dads
- 1:11:00Speaker 2: are always like, yeah, you get that stuff from me.
- 1:11:02Speaker 2: But when you really look at the best athletes in
- 1:11:05Speaker 2: the world, sneaky, it's always like, yeah, dad is an athlete,
- 1:11:08Speaker 2: but if you're a great athlete, dad, but an unathletic mom,
- 1:11:13Speaker 2: You still kind of have a chance, but not really.
- 1:11:15Speaker 2: If you're a great athlete dad with a great athlete mom,
- 1:11:17Speaker 2: that's when you have the super kids. That's when, you know,
- 1:11:21Speaker 2: that's when you end up being like a D1 type
- 1:11:23Speaker 2: of prospect.
- 1:11:26Speaker 12: I'll let him know you said that.
- 1:11:27Speaker 3: My mom will appreciate to hear that.
- 1:11:29Speaker 1: Well, it's science as far as I can describe it.
- 1:11:33Speaker 2: Now that the professional opportunities in women's sports are growing
- 1:11:38Speaker 2: and they're growing pretty rapidly. And we've seen now in volleyball,
- 1:11:41Speaker 2: we got a franchise here in Salt Lake. Same thing
- 1:11:44Speaker 2: with softball, with the Talons now playing in Salt Lake City. Obviously,
- 1:11:48Speaker 2: the WNBA is having a big moment these last couple
- 1:11:51Speaker 2: of seasons.
- 1:11:52Speaker 1: So, you know, this is it's relatively new.
- 1:11:56Speaker 2: And I know that there's been volleyball professionalism, you know,
- 1:11:59Speaker 2: overseas for a long time. Is that something that that
- 1:12:03Speaker 2: you see for yourself? Will you try to pursue this professionally?
- 1:12:06Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:12:06Speaker 3: 100%.
- 1:12:07Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:12:08Speaker 12: I think over the past couple of years that now
- 1:12:10Speaker 12: that I've kind of, like I said, I've been injured
- 1:12:13Speaker 12: while I've been here and I've been able to get
- 1:12:15Speaker 12: healthy and I'm kind of seeing the direction that my
- 1:12:18Speaker 12: game is going. I, um, it's definitely a dream of
- 1:12:21Speaker 12: mine and a goal of mine that I, that I
- 1:12:23Speaker 12: plan to chase when I get done here at Utah.
- 1:12:26Speaker 2: And then in your bio, it says you also want
- 1:12:28Speaker 2: to get into sports broadcasting.
- 1:12:30Speaker 1: Is that true?
- 1:12:31Speaker 3: Yeah, it is true.
- 1:12:33Speaker 12: I've been grateful enough and blessed to have had a
- 1:12:36Speaker 12: couple opportunities here to shadow College Game Day and sit
- 1:12:41Speaker 12: in on the broadcast during the volleyball games last season,
- 1:12:44Speaker 12: do some on-air commentating. And it's just kind of been...
- 1:12:48Speaker 12: You know, something that I didn't really know I wanted
- 1:12:50Speaker 12: to do coming into college, but once I kind of
- 1:12:53Speaker 12: was thrown into it and I was just told to
- 1:12:55Speaker 12: talk about sports and talk to people and do all
- 1:12:58Speaker 12: these fun, cool, exciting things, I was like, you know,
- 1:13:01Speaker 12: I could see myself maybe making a career out of
- 1:13:03Speaker 12: this once I'm done playing volleyball. So that's the challenge
- 1:13:06Speaker 12: is in a, in an industry that is very competitive
- 1:13:09Speaker 12: and is continuing to expand as sports in the States expanded.
- 1:13:12Speaker 12: How do I keep my name, you know, out there
- 1:13:15Speaker 12: as a broadcaster, but also as an athlete. So trying
- 1:13:17Speaker 12: to navigate that and prioritize the right thing at the
- 1:13:19Speaker 12: right time, but for sure, something that I do want
- 1:13:22Speaker 12: to get to eventually in my life.
- 1:13:23Speaker 2: Well, and of course, focus on volleyball right now. And you're,
- 1:13:26Speaker 2: you're playing career play as long as you can. The
- 1:13:33Speaker 2: this might be a stupid question. Do you, do you
- 1:13:35Speaker 2: want to focus on volleyball? Do you want to focus
- 1:13:38Speaker 2: on women's sports or would you be someone who could
- 1:13:41Speaker 2: see themselves like, you know, commentating on, on NFL games
- 1:13:46Speaker 2: or being a part of the, because the unfortunate reality
- 1:13:49Speaker 2: or just the reality, I don't know if it's unfortunate
- 1:13:51Speaker 2: or not, is that like, that's where the biggest money is.
- 1:13:54Speaker 2: That's where the biggest professional opportunities are. Can you see yourself, uh,
- 1:13:58Speaker 2: you know, like on college game day at some point?
- 1:14:02Speaker 12: Yeah, I for sure can. I, I, that's, that's kind
- 1:14:05Speaker 12: of where my head went immediately when I, when I
- 1:14:08Speaker 12: realized that this is something that I want to do is,
- 1:14:11Speaker 12: I mean, I'm competitive. I was raised in a very
- 1:14:13Speaker 12: competitive household. And so I want to be on the
- 1:14:16Speaker 12: biggest stage in front of the biggest crowd and, and,
- 1:14:19Speaker 12: you know, carry the biggest load that I can carry.
- 1:14:21Speaker 12: So I think that's like the competitive side in me,
- 1:14:24Speaker 12: but if I can also be, you know, a a
- 1:14:27Speaker 12: voice and a face in front of a camera for
- 1:14:29Speaker 12: the women's, for the women's side of sports and, and
- 1:14:32Speaker 12: be a part of the expansion of it right now,
- 1:14:34Speaker 12: I would take huge pride, pride in that. So, you know,
- 1:14:37Speaker 12: I think yes, small, short answer is I do want
- 1:14:40Speaker 12: to be on NFL game day and college game day
- 1:14:43Speaker 12: and maybe the NBA, that would be cool too. But
- 1:14:45Speaker 12: I mean, if I can help expand college sports and
- 1:14:47Speaker 12: get more eyes and more viewers on in a space
- 1:14:50Speaker 12: that is already expanding rapidly, I would love to do
- 1:14:52Speaker 12: that as well.
- 1:14:52Speaker 2: Well, the nice thing is it's not one or the other.
- 1:14:54Speaker 2: They're not mutually exclusive, right? Not these days. Have you
- 1:14:59Speaker 2: linked up with Holly Roe ever?
- 1:15:02Speaker 12: Um, briefly, I haven't like sat down, sat down with her,
- 1:15:05Speaker 12: but briefly we've been able to cross paths when she's
- 1:15:07Speaker 12: been on campus. Um, ironically enough, she was my old
- 1:15:11Speaker 12: head coach. Beth Lanier was her, was Holly Rose first
- 1:15:14Speaker 12: official interview when she graduated after she graduated from the U.
- 1:15:18Speaker 12: So that was kind of funny when coach Beth told
- 1:15:20Speaker 12: me that. And so there's some connection there, but I mean,
- 1:15:22Speaker 12: I would love to sit down and just pick her
- 1:15:24Speaker 12: brain for sure.
- 1:15:24Speaker 5: One day.
- 1:15:25Speaker 2: Well, I'm sure you'll make that connection at some point
- 1:15:28Speaker 2: because that's a good friend to have in this business,
- 1:15:30Speaker 2: and she's kind of the gold standard.
- 1:15:31Speaker 1: For sure.
- 1:15:33Speaker 3: Fun stuff.
- 1:15:36Speaker 2: Thank you so much for answering all my questions as
- 1:15:38Speaker 2: I pick your brain on everything around volleyball and some volleyball, too.
- 1:15:42Speaker 1: And most importantly, good luck.
- 1:15:44Speaker 2: We want you to go smash BYU because, obviously, it's
- 1:15:48Speaker 2: go Utes all day here on ESPN 700.
- 1:15:51Speaker 1: Thanks for your time, Ashley.
- 1:15:52Speaker 3: Thank you. Thank you, guys.
- 1:15:54Speaker 2: Ashley West, outside hitter and oppo hitter for this University
- 1:16:00Speaker 2: of Utah volleyball team. Red out at the Huntsman Center
- 1:16:05Speaker 2: tomorrow night at 7 p.m. BYU is the 14th ranked
- 1:16:10Speaker 2: team in the country. Get there, support your Utes. This
- 1:16:15Speaker 2: is an important thing for the entire athletic department, right? Yes,
- 1:16:19Speaker 2: football is the driver. We're going to talk about that
- 1:16:22Speaker 2: all the time. We're going to talk about basketball when
- 1:16:24Speaker 2: their season gets rolling. It's a good thing, and I
- 1:16:28Speaker 2: love that Morgan Scali addresses the accomplishments of the other
- 1:16:31Speaker 2: programs in the athletic department at his weekly press conference
- 1:16:34Speaker 2: because you've got a really good volleyball team right now
- 1:16:38Speaker 2: at the University of Utah, and they've got a shot
- 1:16:41Speaker 2: at beating BYU on the home floor and getting themselves
- 1:16:43Speaker 2: into that top 25. They're just outside of the top
- 1:16:47Speaker 2: 25 conversation right now. Big thanks to Ashley West for
- 1:16:52Speaker 2: joining us. Lots left to get to here, including the
- 1:16:55Speaker 2: Daily Dump next. It's the Sean O'Connell Show on ESPN
- 1:16:58Speaker 2: 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 1:17:04Speaker 5: Feeling out of the loop? Let's catch up on today's
- 1:17:07Speaker 5: biggest headlines in the Daily News Dump, where we flush
- 1:17:10Speaker 5: out the biggest stories of the day on the Sean
- 1:17:13Speaker 5: O'Connell Show and Utah's number one sports talk, ESPN 792.1 FM.
- 1:17:17Speaker 5: Brought to you by Valley Plumbing, Heating, and Cooling. Just
- 1:17:22Speaker 5: look for the truck with the duck.
- 1:17:33Speaker 2: Welcome back to the Sean O'Connell Show. It's ESPN 700
- 1:17:36Speaker 2: and 92.1 FM. All right, this is a really interesting
- 1:17:41Speaker 2: thing to come up for the Daily Dump. By the way,
- 1:17:43Speaker 2: Game 3, NLCS tonight, Dodger Stadium. Brewers have a 2-0 lead.
- 1:17:48Speaker 2: Coverage starts right here on your home of the MLB
- 1:17:51Speaker 2: playoffs at 5.30.
- 1:17:53Speaker 1: Shohei Otani will be in the lineup.
- 1:17:57Speaker 2: He was apparently adamant that he would not be left out.
- 1:18:01Speaker 2: And when you're the best player in baseball, you can
- 1:18:03Speaker 2: influence your manager's decisions in ways that probably a lot
- 1:18:07Speaker 2: of other people can't, even when you're slumping, even when
- 1:18:09Speaker 2: you've been more of a liability than an asset. But
- 1:18:13Speaker 2: Shohei Otani will be in the lineup. And I think
- 1:18:15Speaker 2: that's ultimately that's the right thing, because if you lose
- 1:18:19Speaker 2: with him in the lineup, no one is going to
- 1:18:22Speaker 2: question whether or not he should have been in the lineup.
- 1:18:24Speaker 2: If you lose without him in the lineup, then you
- 1:18:27Speaker 2: open up the possibility for people to say, wait, Slumping
- 1:18:31Speaker 2: or not, why is the best player in baseball not
- 1:18:34Speaker 2: playing in the playoffs when elimination looms? The Rays evened
- 1:18:41Speaker 2: up the ALCS with a 3-1 victory over the Guardians
- 1:18:43Speaker 2: last night. Game three tomorrow night in Cleveland. You can
- 1:18:49Speaker 2: listen to the Major League Baseball playoffs right here on
- 1:18:51Speaker 2: ESPN 700 at 92.1 FM. This is the story I
- 1:18:55Speaker 2: wanted to get to, and I'll be honest with you,
- 1:18:56Speaker 2: it's likely to take up a good portion of the
- 1:18:59Speaker 2: Daily Dump here because we are now in a stage
- 1:19:04Speaker 2: of sports and in professional sports professional from college sports,
- 1:19:11Speaker 2: the betting stuff, the daily sports leagues, the traditional casino-based
- 1:19:16Speaker 2: sports gambling, the calci and poly market, the prediction markets.
- 1:19:23Speaker 2: Gambling is everywhere. It is everywhere on the landscape. And
- 1:19:29Speaker 2: for a long time, it was taboo. It was something
- 1:19:31Speaker 2: that players weren't allowed to refer to. Players weren't allowed
- 1:19:34Speaker 2: to talk about. They certainly weren't allowed to do it.
- 1:19:37Speaker 2: Guys received lifetime bans. Programs received death penalties over gambling stuff.
- 1:19:44Speaker 2: Now it's just part of your everyday landscape. Well, at ESPN,
- 1:19:49Speaker 2: there was a producer who has been working for decades
- 1:19:52Speaker 2: with ESPN who decided to walk away from sports media,
- 1:19:58Speaker 2: from ESPN at least, in protest of the network now
- 1:20:02Speaker 2: embracing sports gambling. She did an interview with the Columbia
- 1:20:07Speaker 2: Journalism Review, and she said, I will not have blood
- 1:20:11Speaker 2: on my hands. Now, it's worth stating, and it's important
- 1:20:16Speaker 2: to note, and shout out to James for getting this
- 1:20:18Speaker 2: in the Daily Dump today, because I don't think I
- 1:20:20Speaker 2: would have found this. But she has some deeply personal
- 1:20:27Speaker 2: experiences with gambling and gambling addiction that make her react
- 1:20:32Speaker 2: to it in a way that a lot of people
- 1:20:34Speaker 2: probably weren't. ESPN bet, by the way, a billion and
- 1:20:40Speaker 2: a half dollars for the network over 10 years is
- 1:20:44Speaker 2: what they were projecting. It has not been that. I mean,
- 1:20:47Speaker 2: it's over now. See, that's right.
- 1:20:49Speaker 6: It kind of flopped embarrassingly after less than two years.
- 1:20:53Speaker 2: But there's always something to fill the space. DraftKings comes
- 1:20:57Speaker 2: in and DraftKings go to ESPN right now. Go to
- 1:21:00Speaker 2: ESPN on college game day. Go to ESPN online. any
- 1:21:05Speaker 2: moment of the day and you're going to wait about
- 1:21:07Speaker 2: 30 seconds before you see some reference to draft Kings
- 1:21:10Speaker 2: and betting odds and things like that.
- 1:21:13Speaker 1: And it's a partnership, right?
- 1:21:18Speaker 2: That is more about the fabric of how you cover
- 1:21:22Speaker 2: than just a traditional like, Oh yeah, look, this is
- 1:21:26Speaker 2: a commercial, right? You don't change the way you don't
- 1:21:30Speaker 2: change the conversation around the baseball or basketball or soccer
- 1:21:36Speaker 2: or hockey or college football or pro football for Coca-Cola.
- 1:21:42Speaker 1: You don't say, I mean, look, the.
- 1:21:44Speaker 2: Ticker at the bottom of the screen right now tells
- 1:21:47Speaker 2: you when the game is going to be on and
- 1:21:49Speaker 2: who's favorite in the game and who's the underdog in
- 1:21:51Speaker 2: the game and.
- 1:21:51Speaker 1: What the odds are. It's just, that's just how it goes, right?
- 1:21:56Speaker 2: There's no, by the way, the flavor, the Coca-Cola flavor
- 1:22:00Speaker 2: of the game for the ALCS is this The best
- 1:22:04Speaker 2: beer that you can get at the game is this.
- 1:22:07Speaker 2: It changes the coverage on games because you bet on
- 1:22:11Speaker 2: the outcome of the game. And these other advertising partners
- 1:22:14Speaker 2: are not so directly linked and related. But this producer said,
- 1:22:20Speaker 2: I'm not going to work for a gambling company and
- 1:22:22Speaker 2: have blood on my hands. She worked there for 24 years.
- 1:22:27Speaker 2: She won an Emmy. She won a Peabody Award. Or
- 1:22:31Speaker 2: are you supposed to say it Peabody? Peabody award, uh,
- 1:22:34Speaker 2: mostly with outside the lines and outside the lines, by
- 1:22:39Speaker 2: the way, is probably one of the more like real
- 1:22:41Speaker 2: journalistic endeavors that ESPN still does.
- 1:22:44Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:22:45Speaker 6: I mean, I think in the article, this is from
- 1:22:48Speaker 6: the Columbia journalism review. Very, very highbrow, very highbrow journalism, uh,
- 1:22:54Speaker 6: publication here. I think they say that she even before, uh,
- 1:23:00Speaker 6: sports betting was legalized in many States in 2018. I
- 1:23:05Speaker 6: think she did some work on outside the lines, kind
- 1:23:09Speaker 6: of these scathing things about sports betting. So she was
- 1:23:14Speaker 6: not just because of her personal story, as you alluded
- 1:23:17Speaker 6: to OC, but also professionally she's been on the opposite
- 1:23:21Speaker 6: side of this sports betting revolution, if you will. And it,
- 1:23:27Speaker 6: it just, It feels pretty natural for her to be like, yeah,
- 1:23:30Speaker 6: this is a reason for me to want to step
- 1:23:32Speaker 6: away from ESPN in particular and probably sports broadcasting.
- 1:23:37Speaker 2: And she she acknowledges this. And I appreciate this. There's
- 1:23:42Speaker 2: less of a like a. finger wagging, judgmental tone to this,
- 1:23:48Speaker 2: like her, even the way she talks about it.
- 1:23:50Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:23:50Speaker 2: It's like, she's doing it for her own reasons and
- 1:23:53Speaker 2: not saying like, how dare all of you do this?
- 1:23:56Speaker 2: She's saying, look, I, I couldn't work for this company. Uh,
- 1:24:00Speaker 2: her grandfather, her father, one of her brothers, according to
- 1:24:03Speaker 2: her pretty much destroyed by sports gambling addiction.
- 1:24:06Speaker 1: She talks about in her childhood, she didn't go normal places.
- 1:24:09Speaker 2: They went to sports books and they went to dog
- 1:24:11Speaker 2: tracks and they went to horse tracks and Unfortunately, she
- 1:24:14Speaker 2: lost her brother at, he was 36 years old. I mean,
- 1:24:19Speaker 2: it's like a deeply personal thing in this family. And
- 1:24:22Speaker 2: she has walked away from a really good job at
- 1:24:24Speaker 2: ESPN because of the way that we have now embraced
- 1:24:28Speaker 2: sports gambling as a culture and the way that the
- 1:24:31Speaker 2: networks are playing into that. And this is, look, this
- 1:24:34Speaker 2: is something that is hyper relevant right now in our
- 1:24:38Speaker 2: state because the, the members of a predominant religion in
- 1:24:42Speaker 2: this state, the, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
- 1:24:45Speaker 2: in the recent general conference. Basically, this was addressed, and
- 1:24:52Speaker 2: Polymarket and Kalshi and the prediction markets were mentioned specifically
- 1:24:58Speaker 2: as being problematic and addictive and something that you should avoid.
- 1:25:02Speaker 6: And probably those in particular were named because those have
- 1:25:07Speaker 6: recently very publicly been their appeal to be legalized in Utah.
- 1:25:13Speaker 1: Was denied.
- 1:25:14Speaker 6: So that, that's probably why that was mentioned in the
- 1:25:17Speaker 6: general conference talk. Um, but there's, I mean, there's draft
- 1:25:21Speaker 6: Kings daily fantasy, which is, which has been operating in
- 1:25:24Speaker 6: like a gray area in States like Utah. I mean,
- 1:25:27Speaker 6: Shreyas Lata, I mentioned it last week on the show.
- 1:25:29Speaker 6: He had a great article in the Salt Lake Tribune
- 1:25:32Speaker 6: where he basically was like new to the market. I'm
- 1:25:35Speaker 6: really curious if gambling is illegal in Utah, why people
- 1:25:39Speaker 6: are able to play daily fantasy like draft Kings and,
- 1:25:42Speaker 6: pride's picks as a sponsor of the station, things like that.
- 1:25:46Speaker 6: And he got an answer that was like, well, technically
- 1:25:49Speaker 6: they're not legal, but they haven't, they just haven't prosecuted
- 1:25:54Speaker 6: them yet, which is very interesting.
- 1:25:56Speaker 2: And then look, it's, you're probably not going, the state
- 1:26:00Speaker 2: is probably not going to go after individuals or go
- 1:26:03Speaker 2: after the companies because it's just going to tie up
- 1:26:06Speaker 2: too much money, resources, energy, et cetera. And something like this,
- 1:26:11Speaker 2: but it is something that, You know, it's always worth
- 1:26:15Speaker 2: a conversation about whether or not this is a good
- 1:26:20Speaker 2: thing or a bad thing in a market, and more importantly,
- 1:26:23Speaker 2: in someone's life. I will say this the way that
- 1:26:27Speaker 2: I say, that I talk about, I'll talk about this
- 1:26:29Speaker 2: the way that I talk about every vice that exists
- 1:26:31Speaker 2: out there.
- 1:26:33Speaker 3: Right?
- 1:26:34Speaker 1: You learn whether or not you can handle things.
- 1:26:40Speaker 2: And if you're not going to tempt that fate and
- 1:26:42Speaker 2: you're not going to take the risk of, oh, guess what?
- 1:26:46Speaker 2: I can't handle this. You're protecting yourself by not doing so.
- 1:26:51Speaker 2: I am a teetotaler, a straight edger. I don't dabble
- 1:26:58Speaker 2: in anything at all. I never have. If you ask
- 1:27:03Speaker 2: me today and every day of my life so far,
- 1:27:05Speaker 2: I never will.
- 1:27:08Speaker 1: That's not.
- 1:27:10Speaker 1: A superiority thing, a moral superiority thing.
- 1:27:12Speaker 2: If anything, it's because I, I acknowledge in myself that
- 1:27:16Speaker 2: I probably can't handle stuff, right? I have a personality
- 1:27:21Speaker 2: where if I, if I get into something, if I
- 1:27:23Speaker 2: like something, I really, really like it. I probably overdo it.
- 1:27:29Speaker 2: I mean, Oreos are that way for me. I can't
- 1:27:33Speaker 2: imagine what crack would be like. So gambling has always
- 1:27:37Speaker 2: been one of these things. Like I, when I'm in Vegas,
- 1:27:40Speaker 2: I'll play cards. When I'm with some buddies, I'll play cards.
- 1:27:44Speaker 2: We'll gamble a little bit. I don't mind throwing a
- 1:27:46Speaker 2: bet down on a sporting event or not. I don't,
- 1:27:50Speaker 2: I don't have to, I don't worry about it the
- 1:27:52Speaker 2: way that other people seem to have to worry about it.
- 1:27:54Speaker 2: And there's good reason why sports gambling should be examined
- 1:27:59Speaker 2: carefully in individuals and in families and in institutions. But
- 1:28:06Speaker 2: The reality now in college sports, in pro sports, in everything,
- 1:28:12Speaker 2: it's not even sports anymore. These prediction markets take bets
- 1:28:16Speaker 2: on things that you probably shouldn't be taking bets on.
- 1:28:21Speaker 2: But it is here, and it is here to stay.
- 1:28:24Speaker 2: And nothing an individual does with their own career choices
- 1:28:28Speaker 2: is going to change that. So this is just a
- 1:28:31Speaker 2: principle move by this This young woman from ESPN.
- 1:28:35Speaker 6: Yeah, and her name's Nicole Noren. It is mentioned in
- 1:28:38Speaker 6: the article she would like. to collaborate with independent journalists,
- 1:28:45Speaker 6: content creators, a.k.a. podcasters, influencers, on talking about the dangers
- 1:28:52Speaker 6: of gambling more than what is talked about when you
- 1:28:55Speaker 6: see basically mostly just positive stuff because– When you're watching sports,
- 1:29:01Speaker 6: I mean, I told you I was watching the baseball
- 1:29:05Speaker 6: game last night, Guardians Rays, and they're bringing up, okay,
- 1:29:09Speaker 6: right now on Kalshi, this is what the, they don't
- 1:29:15Speaker 6: do odds, but this is the percentage of what Kalshi
- 1:29:17Speaker 6: users are saying the outcome of this game will be.
- 1:29:21Speaker 6: Go ahead and go on Kalshi and make your own
- 1:29:25Speaker 6: investment in this, right? it's a very positive thing because
- 1:29:29Speaker 6: they're getting, because they're now getting money from these companies
- 1:29:32Speaker 6: to promote them. She wants to do, she wants to
- 1:29:35Speaker 6: do more investigative journalism, again, collaborating with these influences, influencers
- 1:29:41Speaker 6: and other independent journalists to talk more about the pitfalls
- 1:29:46Speaker 6: of these things, which I think that that's needed more
- 1:29:51Speaker 6: than what we're getting to OC. I, I tend to
- 1:29:53Speaker 6: be on the, I, I tend to be on the
- 1:29:57Speaker 6: side of I would rather if it wasn't so widespread,
- 1:30:02Speaker 6: I do understand the points that have been brought up
- 1:30:06Speaker 6: that say, hey, the bad things that can happen, particularly
- 1:30:10Speaker 6: when you're talking about fixing games and point shaving and
- 1:30:13Speaker 6: stuff like that, they're more likely to be found and
- 1:30:15Speaker 6: nipped in the bud when it is legalized. I'm willing
- 1:30:19Speaker 6: to entertain those kind of stories, but it just– I
- 1:30:23Speaker 6: don't even have the personal tragedy in my life that, uh,
- 1:30:28Speaker 6: Nicole Noren has with losing members of her family to
- 1:30:31Speaker 6: gambling addiction. And I still just feel like, yeah, it
- 1:30:37Speaker 6: feels like there's more harm than good. Then it can
- 1:30:40Speaker 6: do more harm than good. If you delve into this
- 1:30:44Speaker 6: too much and too much is obviously to the point
- 1:30:46Speaker 6: where you're addicted, right? Not where you're recreationally just having
- 1:30:50Speaker 6: a lot of fun with it, but it's, So I
- 1:30:54Speaker 6: tend to be on her side of the thing, but
- 1:30:55Speaker 6: I'm also trying to be really tolerant of like, I.
- 1:30:59Speaker 1: Understand why she's like, do it responsibly.
- 1:31:01Speaker 2: I understand why she's like, okay, I want to, I
- 1:31:03Speaker 2: want journalists to talk more about this. I want, again,
- 1:31:06Speaker 2: it's deeply personal to her. There's nothing wrong with that.
- 1:31:09Speaker 2: But I mean, alcohol is a vice that many of
- 1:31:17Speaker 2: our listeners, most Americans, most people around the world, like,
- 1:31:22Speaker 2: they partake in and they can kind.
- 1:31:24Speaker 1: Of handle, right.
- 1:31:25Speaker 2: And enjoy it responsibly and stuff. But there's also, I mean,
- 1:31:30Speaker 2: millions and millions and millions of examples of it being
- 1:31:33Speaker 2: a wildly destructive and nobody turns away a beer sponsor
- 1:31:40Speaker 2: or a tequila sponsor or whatever, like they're everywhere.
- 1:31:43Speaker 6: Speaker 2, or goes on and even goes on a
- 1:31:44Speaker 6: kind of crusade that she's talking about wanting to go
- 1:31:47Speaker 6: on with gambling.
- 1:31:47Speaker 1: Speaker 3, that's what I mean.
- 1:31:48Speaker 2: Like nobody, no, no, there's no one out there even
- 1:31:52Speaker 2: I shouldn't say no one, but no one is seeking
- 1:31:56Speaker 2: podcast content of like why you shouldn't drink alcohol.
- 1:31:59Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:32:00Speaker 2: No one is going to be seeking podcast content of
- 1:32:03Speaker 2: why gambling is bad for you. It's why these, these
- 1:32:07Speaker 2: rookie symposiums that all the leagues do don't actually work
- 1:32:11Speaker 2: because as soon as you tell someone, uh, you shouldn't
- 1:32:15Speaker 2: do this.
- 1:32:16Speaker 1: There's two personalities.
- 1:32:17Speaker 2: The person who's either bored by it and is going
- 1:32:19Speaker 2: to shut it off or the person who is defiant
- 1:32:23Speaker 2: to it and is going to fight back against it.
- 1:32:26Speaker 1: And there's not really like there.
- 1:32:28Speaker 2: It's so prohibitively rare that someone is going to hear
- 1:32:31Speaker 2: the cautionary tale of Andre Rison. And be like, yep,
- 1:32:36Speaker 2: I 100% buy into all the things you're saying. You
- 1:32:39Speaker 2: learn from your mistakes, not other people's mistakes. So I
- 1:32:42Speaker 2: guess just like I sympathize with this Nicole Noren.
- 1:32:47Speaker 1: I feel a.
- 1:32:50Speaker 2: Certain amount of admiration for her standing on principle and saying, look,
- 1:32:55Speaker 2: I'm willing to take the risk of being unemployed. I'm
- 1:32:58Speaker 2: willing to go on the job market again. rather than
- 1:33:02Speaker 2: staying at a place where I'm probably pretty comfortable. I'm
- 1:33:04Speaker 2: well compensated. I've got a great health plan because I
- 1:33:08Speaker 2: can't stomach this. I admire people who follow their principles.
- 1:33:13Speaker 2: I think that when you do those things, and it
- 1:33:16Speaker 2: seems like she is, when you do those things, you
- 1:33:19Speaker 2: have to follow your principles, accepting that they might not
- 1:33:23Speaker 2: be shared by your employer.
- 1:33:24Speaker 1: They might not be shared by your friends. They might
- 1:33:26Speaker 1: not be shared by your family.
- 1:33:28Speaker 2: Even I, And there are going to be sometimes consequences,
- 1:33:33Speaker 2: sometimes benefits, but there are going to be reactions to
- 1:33:38Speaker 2: these types of things.
- 1:33:39Speaker 1: And she's in a situation.
- 1:33:40Speaker 2: Now where maybe she becomes the face of sports gambling,
- 1:33:47Speaker 2: the fight against sports gambling, or maybe, and more likely, unfortunately,
- 1:33:52Speaker 2: ESPN just hires the replacement.
- 1:33:56Speaker 1: And this article is kind of the last we ever
- 1:33:58Speaker 1: hear from her.
- 1:33:59Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:34:00Speaker 6: It's a topic worth going into. I feel like it's
- 1:34:04Speaker 6: certainly a topic, the way that she describes in this
- 1:34:09Speaker 6: article from the Columbia Journalism Review, what she wants to
- 1:34:13Speaker 6: do to try to tell more of the pitfalls of gambling.
- 1:34:17Speaker 6: I think that's worthwhile to explore for her, too, and
- 1:34:21Speaker 6: for more people to explore. But at the same time,
- 1:34:23Speaker 6: even though I just kind of went on a diatribe away,
- 1:34:25Speaker 6: I think there can be more harm than good in
- 1:34:31Speaker 6: participating in sports gambling. I also, you have to acknowledge
- 1:34:35Speaker 6: just the, the alcohol thing is a great, a great
- 1:34:38Speaker 6: parallel OC because you also have to acknowledge that there
- 1:34:42Speaker 6: are millions of people, maybe even billions of people worldwide
- 1:34:46Speaker 6: now who are participating in sports gambling, just like that,
- 1:34:53Speaker 6: that have partaken of alcohol and, And are not alcoholics.
- 1:34:57Speaker 6: They're not doing destructive things to themselves or other people.
- 1:35:01Speaker 6: They're able to do it responsibly. So it's definitely a
- 1:35:06Speaker 6: complex thing. And it's an interesting story to hear a
- 1:35:10Speaker 6: 24-year veteran at ESPN saying, you know what? I'm done
- 1:35:15Speaker 6: because I don't want to promote this vice anymore in
- 1:35:19Speaker 6: her eyes.
- 1:35:20Speaker 1: Yeah. Anticipate this.
- 1:35:25Speaker 2: We're going to get some really interesting reporting on LeBron James,
- 1:35:30Speaker 2: his sponsorship with fanatics, which is in this same realm.
- 1:35:35Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:35:36Speaker 2: And, uh, the helicopter that he rides to work in
- 1:35:40Speaker 2: for about 45 minutes, because James's guy, Pablo Torre has
- 1:35:44Speaker 2: now turned his investigative lens onto the LeBron James.
- 1:35:49Speaker 1: He's coming after everybody. He just got done.
- 1:35:52Speaker 6: He's probably not done, but he just released a few
- 1:35:55Speaker 6: on Tim Tebow and a scam that's going on that
- 1:36:00Speaker 6: Tim Tebow may or may not have participated in.
- 1:36:02Speaker 3: So, yeah.
- 1:36:03Speaker 1: LeBron's next.
- 1:36:04Speaker 2: It looks like it's actually a really dicey time to
- 1:36:07Speaker 2: be an hyper famous athlete. It is Pablo Torre, his
- 1:36:12Speaker 2: whole livelihood. Now he's finding things out. Baby's finding your
- 1:36:15Speaker 2: dirt and dirty laundry. Pablo Torre is like, if he's,
- 1:36:20Speaker 2: I hope he hires a bodyguard and a security person
- 1:36:22Speaker 2: pretty soon because he is now in the very dicey
- 1:36:25Speaker 2: realm of upsetting billionaires and.
- 1:36:30Speaker 1: I mean, I'm a conspiracy theorist.
- 1:36:32Speaker 2: You people know this, but I think that is bad
- 1:36:35Speaker 2: for your long-term health when you start to mess with
- 1:36:38Speaker 2: the bottom line for billionaires.
- 1:36:39Speaker 1: Dan Levitard. Or the passion projects for billionaires.
- 1:36:42Speaker 6: Dan Levitard's got his hands full being his security guy.
- 1:36:45Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:36:46Speaker 2: I just, I just think that, and again, we just
- 1:36:50Speaker 2: talked about principles like Pablo Torre is making money off this,
- 1:36:54Speaker 2: but there's a lot of ways for Pablo Torre to
- 1:36:57Speaker 2: make money. That don't involve him ruffling the feathers of
- 1:37:00Speaker 2: people who could ruin his life.
- 1:37:02Speaker 1: And he's just doing it. He's just going after him.
- 1:37:04Speaker 1: He's like, what's up? You got to admire it because.
- 1:37:08Speaker 6: We're in an age when media has become, especially the media,
- 1:37:16Speaker 6: the people in media that you know, like a Pablo Torre,
- 1:37:19Speaker 6: they have become so beholden to Whoever the corporations are
- 1:37:24Speaker 6: that sponsor the network that you're on or the publication
- 1:37:28Speaker 6: that you write for or speak.
- 1:37:30Speaker 1: On, right?
- 1:37:30Speaker 6: And he and Metal Ark Media, Dan Levitard, the face
- 1:37:34Speaker 6: of Metal Ark Media, they're just.
- 1:37:36Speaker 1: Like, you know what? We don't care.
- 1:37:37Speaker 6: We want you to find out whatever you want to
- 1:37:41Speaker 6: find out. You got to admire that.
- 1:37:43Speaker 2: Let me ask you this.
- 1:37:46Speaker 3: 877-353-0700.
- 1:37:46Speaker 8: If.
- 1:37:51Speaker 2: Fan bet, fan, dual underdog fantasy prize picks shout out station.
- 1:38:01Speaker 2: If any of these companies somehow found a way, right.
- 1:38:07Speaker 2: I know that there are rules against it, but let's,
- 1:38:10Speaker 2: if they somehow found a way and we're just like,
- 1:38:12Speaker 2: you know what? We are now the Jersey patch sponsor
- 1:38:16Speaker 2: for the university of Utah football and basketball and women's
- 1:38:19Speaker 2: basketball team.
- 1:38:21Speaker 1: We're on the leotards for the Red Rocks.
- 1:38:24Speaker 2: And it's going to bring 10 million, 20 million, 30 million,
- 1:38:27Speaker 2: 50 million, whatever your number is.
- 1:38:31Speaker 1: To Utah athletics.
- 1:38:33Speaker 2: Are you going to say, cool, as a, as a
- 1:38:35Speaker 2: Utah fan, if you're listening to the show, you're probably
- 1:38:37Speaker 2: a Utah fan. If one of these companies wants to
- 1:38:41Speaker 2: throw money at the university of Utah and the rules
- 1:38:45Speaker 2: are magically eliminated. So everything that blocks this, all the
- 1:38:50Speaker 2: big 12 rules and the NCAA rules don't have to
- 1:38:52Speaker 2: listen to them anymore, by the way.
- 1:38:54Speaker 1: Uh, but the big 12 rules say, you know what?
- 1:38:56Speaker 1: You can't have a.
- 1:38:57Speaker 2: Alcohol sponsor, a tobacco sponsor, a weed sponsor.
- 1:39:01Speaker 1: You can't have a betting sponsor.
- 1:39:03Speaker 2: What if those things went away and they wanted to
- 1:39:05Speaker 2: give the university of Utah more money than this PV
- 1:39:09Speaker 2: three company that just threw another bag at BYU. And
- 1:39:14Speaker 2: it's now draft Kings field at rice echo stadium. Uh,
- 1:39:18Speaker 2: DraftKings monster energy field at Rice Echo stadium. Are we
- 1:39:21Speaker 2: cool with that? Are you happy with that as a fan?
- 1:39:26Speaker 3: 877-353-0700.
- 1:39:26Speaker 2: Again, I think for me, I'm just kind of like,
- 1:39:29Speaker 2: all right, that's a logo and I don't care anything
- 1:39:31Speaker 2: about it. It doesn't make me more likely to want
- 1:39:35Speaker 2: to place a bet because you're on Utah's Jersey. It
- 1:39:40Speaker 2: doesn't make me less likely to place a bet because
- 1:39:42Speaker 2: I think that, oh, you should stay out of college sports.
- 1:39:46Speaker 2: And you're not offended by it because it's a gambling country.
- 1:39:50Speaker 2: Gambling companies don't bother me. You know how many times
- 1:39:53Speaker 2: I've driven past the big signs in Las Vegas and
- 1:39:56Speaker 2: not lost any money at those places.
- 1:39:58Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:39:59Speaker 2: I mean, lots of times, dozens of times because you,
- 1:40:04Speaker 2: you don't have to do it now. maybe my opinion
- 1:40:07Speaker 2: changes as my kids get a little bit older and
- 1:40:09Speaker 2: they become teenagers and they have their own phones and
- 1:40:12Speaker 2: they're going off to college and they're like, Hey dad,
- 1:40:14Speaker 2: I just lost $ 500 betting on the outcome of a
- 1:40:18Speaker 2: women's basketball game. I'm probably gonna be like, whoa, whoa, whoa,
- 1:40:21Speaker 2: pump the brakes here. And then maybe in that case,
- 1:40:24Speaker 2: I'm going to be bothered by these companies, but I
- 1:40:26Speaker 2: don't think so. Because if ultimately one of my kids
- 1:40:31Speaker 2: comes home drunk, I'm not going to say, all right,
- 1:40:33Speaker 2: I'm taking down Budweiser.
- 1:40:35Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:40:36Speaker 2: You know, like I, I don't know where the cultural
- 1:40:42Speaker 2: responsibility is supposed to be on this type of stuff.
- 1:40:46Speaker 2: I have been pretty, I've been in the past, not
- 1:40:50Speaker 2: now because I'm more just like, Hey, don't hurt me
- 1:40:53Speaker 2: or mine. And I don't care what you do, but
- 1:40:55Speaker 2: I have been pretty obnoxious at times in my life,
- 1:40:59Speaker 2: making the point of like, Hey, if we did, if
- 1:41:03Speaker 2: we took alcohol out of cultural existence for like a
- 1:41:08Speaker 2: year and everyone forgot what it was. And then you
- 1:41:10Speaker 2: tried to bring it back in as a legal substance.
- 1:41:13Speaker 2: No chance that it's legalized with all the negative side effects.
- 1:41:18Speaker 2: It's bad for your health. It's bad for everything. I'm like,
- 1:41:21Speaker 2: there's no way that would get legal. I've made this
- 1:41:24Speaker 2: point a million times. I used to like stump on this.
- 1:41:27Speaker 2: when people got into conversations with me and people be like, Oh,
- 1:41:30Speaker 2: come on, have a drink.
- 1:41:31Speaker 1: It used to be pro prohibition. We have a drink
- 1:41:34Speaker 1: with me. Why don't you drink?
- 1:41:35Speaker 2: I'd be like, don't, I used to be like, don't
- 1:41:36Speaker 2: you know how crazy it is that this is something
- 1:41:40Speaker 2: that is like deeply embedded in the fabric of American
- 1:41:43Speaker 2: culture and worldwide culture. And you know, I've matured out
- 1:41:46Speaker 2: of that needing to prove a point or wanting to
- 1:41:49Speaker 2: prove a point, become more tolerant.
- 1:41:51Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:41:52Speaker 2: And, and, Tolerant is because you know what I'm not
- 1:41:55Speaker 2: tolerant of? I'm not tolerant of drunkenness. I'm not tolerant
- 1:41:58Speaker 2: of irresponsibility. I am tolerant of the idea that you
- 1:42:02Speaker 2: can drink whatever you want as long as you enjoy
- 1:42:05Speaker 2: it responsibly. And if you don't and it crosses over
- 1:42:08Speaker 2: into the realm of harm or illegal, then it's problematic.
- 1:42:11Speaker 1: That's how I feel kind of about all of this stuff.
- 1:42:14Speaker 6: Yeah, it's like Spence likes to say on the drive,
- 1:42:17Speaker 6: two to six, he likes to say moderation in all things.
- 1:42:20Speaker 6: And he kind of implies that Not that doesn't mean
- 1:42:25Speaker 6: some things we completely ban outright. That means in all things.
- 1:42:29Speaker 4: Right.
- 1:42:30Speaker 6: And so I, I have gotten, I, I've gotten more
- 1:42:34Speaker 6: and more on that side of things where it's like, yeah,
- 1:42:37Speaker 6: as long as you're able to do it responsibly and
- 1:42:40Speaker 6: you're not getting out of control or with whatever thing
- 1:42:44Speaker 6: that you're into, that may or may not be a vice, um,
- 1:42:48Speaker 6: go for it and just don't harm other people or yourself.
- 1:42:54Speaker 1: I'm okay with this is from 1466 on the text line.
- 1:42:57Speaker 2: I'm okay with betting companies advertising on university of Utah uniforms.
- 1:43:01Speaker 2: I'd rather see that than the youth selling Pepsi, bring
- 1:43:03Speaker 2: back Coke, go use. I mean, there are people out there.
- 1:43:08Speaker 6: You're listening to CBP. We got a Utes fan who
- 1:43:10Speaker 6: wants Coke, not Pepsi.
- 1:43:12Speaker 1: At least get some diet Dr. Pepper in there.
- 1:43:14Speaker 2: That's like the redeeming thing about Pepsi brands is they
- 1:43:18Speaker 2: have Dr.
- 1:43:18Speaker 1: Pepper. Yeah, it's Dr.
- 1:43:20Speaker 3: Pepper.
- 1:43:20Speaker 6: And that's because Dr. Pepper is technically independent. You see
- 1:43:23Speaker 6: it in the Coke vending machines. You see it in
- 1:43:26Speaker 6: the Pepsi vending machines because they get to play both
- 1:43:28Speaker 6: sides there.
- 1:43:30Speaker 1: This is from Spencer.
- 1:43:31Speaker 2: One thing that came up with the Premier League bet
- 1:43:33Speaker 2: sponsor ban, they banned... betting sponsors from premier league shirts,
- 1:43:39Speaker 2: former players was former players who struggled with betting, including
- 1:43:42Speaker 2: some more suspended for betting and now had to wear
- 1:43:45Speaker 2: a shirt with betting on it.
- 1:43:47Speaker 1: That would be problematic. Yeah. But again, the.
- 1:43:52Speaker 2: NFL, the NHL, major league baseball, they've had a million
- 1:43:56Speaker 2: guys who've had, who've dealt with alcoholism.
- 1:44:00Speaker 1: Or drugs in the past.
- 1:44:03Speaker 2: Weed has gotten Josh Gordon lost his entire career to marijuana.
- 1:44:07Speaker 6: I mean, think about the St. Louis Cardinals. The name
- 1:44:10Speaker 6: of their stadium is Bush Stadium. Anheuser-Busch. And there's probably
- 1:44:14Speaker 6: a lot of Cardinals players that have had problems with alcohol.
- 1:44:17Speaker 1: Over the years.
- 1:44:19Speaker 2: There's this line that we have to sometimes discuss. We
- 1:44:24Speaker 2: can't solve anything on a sports talk radio show. But
- 1:44:26Speaker 2: there's a line where we discuss.
- 1:44:28Speaker 1: Like, okay.
- 1:44:29Speaker 2: Personal responsibility, the use of things that can be harmful
- 1:44:33Speaker 2: or problematic or dangerous, right? Nobody is bothered by your
- 1:44:39Speaker 2: dirt bike sponsor when someone crashes a dirt bike.
- 1:44:42Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:44:43Speaker 2: If you are reckless on your boat at Lake Powell
- 1:44:47Speaker 2: and that thing sinks and you have to be life
- 1:44:50Speaker 2: flighted out of there, no one is just like, we
- 1:44:52Speaker 2: got to get rid of boats.
- 1:44:55Speaker 1: I don't know, man.
- 1:44:55Speaker 2: It's tough because ultimately personal responsibility comes in and And
- 1:45:00Speaker 2: I know that it's overly reductive because the norm in
- 1:45:05Speaker 2: boating is that everything's probably going to be fine and safe.
- 1:45:08Speaker 2: I don't know if it's even the norm in betting
- 1:45:11Speaker 2: or in, you know, alcohol or drug consumption that everything's
- 1:45:14Speaker 2: going to be okay. I don't know what the norm
- 1:45:16Speaker 2: is in betting, especially because that's what we're talking about
- 1:45:18Speaker 2: right now.
- 1:45:19Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 1:45:21Speaker 2: Clearly the norm is not you win or else these
- 1:45:24Speaker 2: companies wouldn't have billions and billions of dollars.
- 1:45:27Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:45:28Speaker 2: So the norm is you lose. How badly do you lose?
- 1:45:33Speaker 2: I mean, 877-353-0700. Tell us what you think about the
- 1:45:39Speaker 2: ubiquitous nature of sports gambling and the advertisements. And would
- 1:45:44Speaker 2: you accept it at the University of Utah or on
- 1:45:46Speaker 2: your other favorite team, Utah Mammoth?
- 1:45:48Speaker 1: We're going to talk with Adrian Denny.
- 1:45:49Speaker 2: If they had a DraftKings patch on the sweater, would
- 1:45:53Speaker 2: it affect how much you liked the Mammoth?
- 1:45:55Speaker 1: I think the answer is an obvious no. Yeah, jazz, whatever.
- 1:45:59Speaker 6: And good news is, especially after last weekend, I don't
- 1:46:03Speaker 6: think BYU fans are going to have to grapple with
- 1:46:05Speaker 6: that question.
- 1:46:06Speaker 1: So if you're a BYU fan, you're like, yeah, whatever.
- 1:46:08Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:46:10Speaker 2: Reminder to all of you out there, now that the
- 1:46:13Speaker 2: cold weather is upon us, the rain, the sleet, the snow.
- 1:46:17Speaker 2: In the summertime, you could probably just get away with it,
- 1:46:20Speaker 2: get over the fact that your house is a little
- 1:46:22Speaker 2: too warm.
- 1:46:23Speaker 1: In the wintertime, we have a hard time dealing with cold, baby.
- 1:46:26Speaker 2: You need to get that home more energy efficient. And
- 1:46:29Speaker 2: the best way to do that is probably to replace
- 1:46:32Speaker 2: those old single pane windows with the metal frames that
- 1:46:36Speaker 2: are looking a little bent and dinged up and dusty anyway.
- 1:46:39Speaker 2: Number one vinyl replacement windows in the state of Utah

- 1:47:23Speaker 2: Between the Pipes is next. The Utah Mammoth with a
- 1:47:26Speaker 2: big win last night. Back on home ice against the
- 1:47:29Speaker 2: Toronto Maple Leafs. We'll discuss that, what's coming, and much
- 1:47:33Speaker 2: more with Adrian Denny. It's the Sean O'Connell Show on
- 1:47:36Speaker 2: ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM. I can feel it coming
- 1:47:38Speaker 2: in the air tonight.
- 1:47:48Speaker 5: You're listening to The Sean O'Connell Show from the Murdoch
- 1:47:51Speaker 5: Hyundai Studio of ESPN 792.1 FM.
- 1:48:04Speaker 2: Welcome back to the Sean O'Connell show. It is that
- 1:48:06Speaker 2: time Wednesdays at one. We go between the pipes with
- 1:48:10Speaker 2: Adrian Denny, Aladdin industries and Valley plumbing, heating and cooling.
- 1:48:13Speaker 1: Make it possible.
- 1:48:14Speaker 2: Our Utah mammoth insider is right here in studio with me.
- 1:48:18Speaker 1: Hi, Adrian. Oh, see.
- 1:48:20Speaker 8: Thanks for having me back, man.
- 1:48:21Speaker 1: How are you doing? All right. Doing great.
- 1:48:23Speaker 2: I will look back and we'll look forward and we'll
- 1:48:25Speaker 2: look at last night with this Utah mammoth. I want
- 1:48:27Speaker 2: to go a couple of games back though. What the
- 1:48:31Speaker 2: bleep happened to this team in Boston?
- 1:48:34Speaker 8: It's funny because if you looked at all of the analytics,
- 1:48:40Speaker 8: On the game, the expected win-a-meter from moneypuck.com had the
- 1:48:45Speaker 8: Mammoth at like 80-20 the whole game. Expected goals in
- 1:48:52Speaker 8: the game favored Utah. So, two things. Analytics don't factor
- 1:49:00Speaker 8: in game management and momentum and saves that should have
- 1:49:07Speaker 8: been made by both Grover Milka and Sebastian Kosa. It
- 1:49:12Speaker 8: just was an off night in the middle of a
- 1:49:15Speaker 8: five game trip. You know, Mike Fultz and I were
- 1:49:19Speaker 8: talking like the experts say that you're probably going to
- 1:49:24Speaker 8: have five or six clunkers a year. And the funny
- 1:49:28Speaker 8: thing was, is everything but the game and the key
- 1:49:34Speaker 8: moments in the game. They did a pretty good job
- 1:49:37Speaker 8: of first 10 minutes.
- 1:49:38Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:49:38Speaker 3: And then.
- 1:49:40Speaker 8: Boston got a power play goal and then they got
- 1:49:43Speaker 8: three and scored one all year. So it was just
- 1:49:45Speaker 8: kind of the averages, I guess, catching up, but not
- 1:49:51Speaker 8: a not a fun Thursday night. But but we were
- 1:49:54Speaker 8: all amused looking at all of the because I'm a
- 1:49:56Speaker 8: big expected win a meter guy, especially when the Mammoth
- 1:49:58Speaker 8: are losing. Hey, but see the expected win a meter. Hey, but,
- 1:50:03Speaker 8: but you got to manage situations.
- 1:50:05Speaker 2: They're down for one, but the expected winner meter says
- 1:50:08Speaker 2: they're coming back.
- 1:50:08Speaker 8: You got to push back, which is why Utah is
- 1:50:11Speaker 8: five and two, because they've really been good in situations
- 1:50:15Speaker 8: of countering momentum. Last night, Toronto made the game three, one, four, four, two.
- 1:50:23Speaker 8: I'm trying to do the recount in my head. Nevertheless, OC,
- 1:50:30Speaker 8: the mammoth had three. three goal leads and Toronto trimmed
- 1:50:34Speaker 8: it to two, three times twice. The mammoth got the
- 1:50:37Speaker 8: three goal lead back instantly, right? The pushback was there. Um,
- 1:50:42Speaker 8: and then late in the game, it's five, four key moment.
- 1:50:46Speaker 8: Goalie makes five huge saves in the final 90 seconds,
- 1:50:49Speaker 8: six on four. So it was just kind of the
- 1:50:52Speaker 8: way that, that they were able to, to manage the
- 1:50:54Speaker 8: game that went the exact opposite in Boston when they
- 1:50:57Speaker 8: lost six to one.
- 1:50:59Speaker 2: Uh, In between, they had a nice little response in
- 1:51:03Speaker 2: Buffalo as well. So this team, like Adrian mentioned, 5-2
- 1:51:07Speaker 2: right now. They continue to score goals. You're getting a
- 1:51:13Speaker 2: nice balance of production. You know, guys that are newcomers
- 1:51:18Speaker 2: on the roster. Vincent Trocek, once again, proving his worth
- 1:51:23Speaker 2: early in this season. Mackenzie Wieger hasn't been around for long.
- 1:51:27Speaker 2: He's proving his worth early. Daniil Boot, these guys, obviously,
- 1:51:31Speaker 2: you know, there was no doubt that Petrochek and Uyghur
- 1:51:36Speaker 2: were going to be staples in this franchise. Daniil Boot
- 1:51:39Speaker 2: is still very young and handled being sent back down
- 1:51:43Speaker 2: last year with, I think, a lot of grace. And
- 1:51:46Speaker 2: it's proving itself. He's proving himself, paying dividends and showing
- 1:51:50Speaker 2: those dividends now on NHL ice. And we're talking about
- 1:51:54Speaker 2: these newcomers in a, in a roster that has a
- 1:51:58Speaker 2: lot of the same, but we're seeing some of the
- 1:52:00Speaker 2: difference making a difference.
- 1:52:03Speaker 8: McKenzie Weger's been unbelievable. Like, and it's added to Mikhail
- 1:52:11Speaker 8: Sergeyev's game to have a D partner like that. But
- 1:52:15Speaker 8: when the man with got Weger last year, like you,
- 1:52:18Speaker 8: you looked at, you know, some, some defensive numbers and he'd,
- 1:52:21Speaker 8: then top three in the NHL and block shots and hits,
- 1:52:25Speaker 8: you know, over a five-year stretch. And he'd also had
- 1:52:28Speaker 8: a 20 goal season in that. And this year with,
- 1:52:33Speaker 8: with the full camp, with the full off season, we've
- 1:52:37Speaker 8: said he went from the slowest team to the fastest team.
- 1:52:40Speaker 8: And it was, it was an adjustment that, you know,
- 1:52:42Speaker 8: he probably was disappointed with how he played. And he
- 1:52:46Speaker 8: said that going down the stretch in the playoffs, even
- 1:52:49Speaker 8: though it was an addition, it was a, a, a
- 1:52:52Speaker 8: big insertion of the lineup for, for Utah. But, but
- 1:52:55Speaker 8: now we're seeing the real McKenzie Weger, who is, is
- 1:53:00Speaker 8: all over Austin Matthews, like a grizzly bear last night
- 1:53:04Speaker 8: in the third period. Like he was, he was on
- 1:53:07Speaker 8: top of him. And then you look at the other
- 1:53:10Speaker 8: side of the ice and Mikhail Sergeyev is holding court
- 1:53:15Speaker 8: over there and making it difficult in big moments of
- 1:53:20Speaker 8: the game and big Possession points, big shifts for Toronto.
- 1:53:29Speaker 8: If they're not there holding it all down, Maple Leafs
- 1:53:34Speaker 8: would have got some better chances and probably would have
- 1:53:38Speaker 8: tied the game up. But Wiegers fought twice. He's got
- 1:53:41Speaker 8: in on the offense, but he's just a big guy
- 1:53:45Speaker 8: that you have to reckon with him when you enter
- 1:53:49Speaker 8: the offensive zone if you're facing the Mammoth.
- 1:53:53Speaker 2: 5-4 was the final score, and as you mentioned, things
- 1:53:57Speaker 2: got tight late.
- 1:54:00Speaker 1: It seemed interminable.
- 1:54:01Speaker 2: It was like a forever stretch of six on four
- 1:54:05Speaker 2: at the very end, and Vemelka had to make some
- 1:54:07Speaker 2: great saves. You're playing from behind. I don't know if
- 1:54:12Speaker 2: boneheaded is the right way to call the penalty taken
- 1:54:15Speaker 2: by Gunther, but untimely at the very least. It was
- 1:54:19Speaker 2: troublesome to see it in that situation, and all the
- 1:54:22Speaker 2: momentum belonged to to the Maple Leafs at that point,
- 1:54:25Speaker 2: but how big was it that final stand, surviving that
- 1:54:29Speaker 2: six-on-four onslaught for this Utah Mammoth team?
- 1:54:32Speaker 8: It was Karel Vemelka winning the team a game, and
- 1:54:37Speaker 8: you look at some of the goals that they got,
- 1:54:41Speaker 8: could they have been saved? You don't like giving up
- 1:54:43Speaker 8: four in a game, right? That's getting to the point
- 1:54:46Speaker 8: where it's a little high. Could the goalie have saved
- 1:54:49Speaker 8: one of those? But he was phenomenal. And that's, that's,
- 1:54:55Speaker 8: you know, you look at goaltender numbers and you see
- 1:54:57Speaker 8: a good save percentage, you see a good goals against average,
- 1:54:59Speaker 8: or you see the same percentage. That's, that's a little lower.
- 1:55:02Speaker 8: Like the milk is was last night, but the saves
- 1:55:06Speaker 8: he made in the big moments. And I'm looking at,
- 1:55:09Speaker 8: at the shot chart, he had five saves in the
- 1:55:12Speaker 8: final 80 seconds when it is six on four. And
- 1:55:16Speaker 8: Vinny Trocek after the game said, yeah, that's, that's what
- 1:55:19Speaker 8: it said. He made five saves, but there were, there
- 1:55:22Speaker 8: were a lot more, um, pucks that were in his
- 1:55:26Speaker 8: neighborhood that they got knocked away than, than he got
- 1:55:29Speaker 8: credit for. So, so that was a big Corral Vamulka
- 1:55:31Speaker 8: game for the mammoth. And, you know, you win a
- 1:55:34Speaker 8: one goal game. A lot of the times you're, you're
- 1:55:36Speaker 8: looking at your goalie and, and I think that that
- 1:55:40Speaker 8: was a signature, you know, save for, for Vamulka really is,
- 1:55:45Speaker 8: is the whole game is, is considered. And, Gosh, the penalties, man.
- 1:55:52Speaker 8: Utah in that game, I thought Toronto had a great
- 1:55:55Speaker 8: first period. I thought they were coming out playing with
- 1:55:59Speaker 8: some of the momentum from a big win in Colorado
- 1:56:02Speaker 8: on Saturday. They were fresh. They'd been up in Park
- 1:56:04Speaker 8: City for the last couple days. They'd been practicing up there.
- 1:56:07Speaker 8: They started with a decent game to open their trip
- 1:56:10Speaker 8: in Vegas. They lost in a shootout, but I thought,
- 1:56:14Speaker 8: oh boy, the Mavs are kind of back on their
- 1:56:15Speaker 8: heels here because Toronto's really bringing it. And then They
- 1:56:19Speaker 8: were able to take that early lead and go from
- 1:56:22Speaker 8: there and then use really their identity of speed and
- 1:56:26Speaker 8: skill and what they're able to do off the rush
- 1:56:29Speaker 8: in transition to kind of take control of the game.
- 1:56:32Speaker 8: Five-on-five scoring was 4-1. Penalties is what kind of made
- 1:56:38Speaker 8: that game kind of messy. And that's where Toronto's got
- 1:56:42Speaker 8: a good power play. Stayed in it with two power
- 1:56:46Speaker 8: play goals. scoring one on a delayed penalty that would
- 1:56:50Speaker 8: have been a power play. But the thing about those penalties, OC,
- 1:56:55Speaker 8: was you're thinking, oh, it's the Toronto Maple Leafs. Like,
- 1:56:58Speaker 8: you can see taking a penalty here or there against
- 1:57:00Speaker 8: them because, you know, Austin Matthews, William Nylander, the new
- 1:57:04Speaker 8: 18-year-old Gavin McKenna, like, they put you in compromising situations.
- 1:57:10Speaker 8: But the penalties that the Mammoth took, like, it was Gunther, like,
- 1:57:15Speaker 8: really kind of straddling the neutral zone. And I've never
- 1:57:17Speaker 8: seen him take three minor penalties in a game ever.
- 1:57:20Speaker 8: And then he took a penalty earlier in the, in
- 1:57:22Speaker 8: the offensive end. And, and that was the one thing
- 1:57:24Speaker 8: that really got to bear after the game was like,
- 1:57:27Speaker 8: it's where we took the penalties. Like we just didn't
- 1:57:29Speaker 8: need to do them. So I chalk it up to
- 1:57:32Speaker 8: a night that they took some penalties that they're probably
- 1:57:36Speaker 8: not going to take again.
- 1:57:39Speaker 2: Adrian Denny is our guest here on the Sean O'Connell
- 1:57:41Speaker 2: show between the pipes. As we talk a little Utah mammoth,
- 1:57:46Speaker 2: um as you're looking at the things that will be
- 1:57:49Speaker 2: tweaked over the course of the season and maybe that's
- 1:57:52Speaker 2: one of them what else is there that this team
- 1:57:54Speaker 2: i mean special teams have been a lot better at
- 1:57:57Speaker 2: the beginning of this but far from a finished product
- 1:58:00Speaker 2: nobody is in the nhl right now when these guys
- 1:58:03Speaker 2: are trying to tweak some things what's top of the agenda?
- 1:58:07Speaker 8: I think five on five has been good. Top ten
- 1:58:09Speaker 8: in the NHL, five on five. Power play has been
- 1:58:12Speaker 8: leading the NHL for most of this. We thought the
- 1:58:14Speaker 8: penalty kill was there. First three games of the year
- 1:58:18Speaker 8: didn't allow a power play goal. New Jersey scored on
- 1:58:20Speaker 8: a five on three, whatever. You're 13 for 14 going
- 1:58:24Speaker 8: into Boston on Thursday. And then all of a sudden
- 1:58:26Speaker 8: their power play, which had been 0 for 10, chalks
- 1:58:28Speaker 8: up three. Buffalo on Saturday goes up one, nothing getting
- 1:58:32Speaker 8: their first power play goal of the year. And then
- 1:58:35Speaker 8: Toronto two power play goals. So PK started off really strong.
- 1:58:41Speaker 8: I can't with, with the sample size that we have
- 1:58:44Speaker 8: really doubt in other than that's a percentage that you
- 1:58:47Speaker 8: want to be a little bit higher there. And, and
- 1:58:51Speaker 8: then you're looking at goals you allowed and you're zeroing
- 1:58:54Speaker 8: in on a Malka and Sebastian Cosa. And you're like, well, that,
- 1:58:59Speaker 8: pretty high-danger scoring chances that they scored. So easy, stay
- 1:59:05Speaker 8: out of the penalty box, and just see what you
- 1:59:09Speaker 8: can tighten up there on the PK, because to start
- 1:59:12Speaker 8: the year, it was perfect.
- 1:59:17Speaker 2: We were talking about him before we came on air here. Schmaltz,
- 1:59:22Speaker 2: Nick Schmaltz, is off to a red-hot start to this season.
- 1:59:26Speaker 2: Is it sustainable for Schmaltz?
- 1:59:28Speaker 8: It is because of where he's scoring his goals. If
- 1:59:35Speaker 8: his shooting percentage was, say, 40% right now, you're like,
- 1:59:41Speaker 8: that's a little high. That's going to normalize down to 10, 15, 20%.
- 1:59:43Speaker 8: But the difference for him this year compared to the
- 1:59:48Speaker 8: first decade of his career is... where he's scoring his
- 1:59:59Speaker 8: goals from five of his six goals have been scored
- 2:00:04Speaker 8: within close proximity of the net for his career. He's
- 2:00:09Speaker 8: about 25% for scoring goals within a close proximity of
- 2:00:14Speaker 8: the net. So relying on his shot. So when, when
- 2:00:22Speaker 8: he's creating offense and doing what he's done so far,
- 2:00:25Speaker 8: it's just something you're going to have to, put up
- 2:00:28Speaker 8: with when he goes to those, those high danger areas.
- 2:00:33Speaker 8: If you're the opposition, because you're not relying on your
- 2:00:36Speaker 8: goalie to stop a one-time shot from Nick Schmaltz that
- 2:00:39Speaker 8: to start the year has gone in 40 to 45%
- 2:00:41Speaker 8: of the time. And you know, it's gonna, it's gonna normalize.
- 2:00:46Speaker 8: And as I watch him and Clayton Keller, just their
- 2:00:50Speaker 8: tenaciousness of hunting pucks when Utah is, is, back defensively
- 2:00:58Speaker 8: or they're they're trying to strip an opposing player coming
- 2:01:02Speaker 8: out of the offensive zone to get the puck back
- 2:01:05Speaker 8: to go create some more offense like they did in
- 2:01:07Speaker 8: buffalo on saturday but those guys like defensively like nick
- 2:01:15Speaker 8: schmaltz was top 10 in the nhl and strips last
- 2:01:19Speaker 8: year to to put it to an elementary term uh
- 2:01:24Speaker 8: but the keller's the same thing they're they're a shutdown
- 2:01:28Speaker 8: group that they don't have the puck, they get it
- 2:01:31Speaker 8: back for you and they get back to work. And
- 2:01:33Speaker 8: that's been the best thing so far from, from Utah
- 2:01:38Speaker 8: skill is how hard they've worked to get the puck back.
- 2:01:40Speaker 8: And I think we've seen a lot of that from,
- 2:01:42Speaker 8: from Cooley and Gunther too, is, you know, you got
- 2:01:45Speaker 8: skill guys, but these, these Utah skill guys, and it
- 2:01:50Speaker 8: goes back to just kind of their, their mindsets of
- 2:01:53Speaker 8: just being so obsessed with hockey a hundred percent of
- 2:01:57Speaker 8: the time that, They're not just looking for the quick
- 2:02:00Speaker 8: highlight real play. They understand that we got to play
- 2:02:03Speaker 8: defense too. And number two, if we want to, you know,
- 2:02:07Speaker 8: reach our offensive numbers and we don't have the puck,
- 2:02:09Speaker 8: we got to go get it back.
- 2:02:11Speaker 1: And so they go to town.
- 2:02:14Speaker 2: A guy, one of my favorite players on this team,
- 2:02:16Speaker 2: and we have not talked about him yet in any
- 2:02:18Speaker 2: of our between the pipe segments, but he leads the
- 2:02:21Speaker 2: team in plus minus right now. He's only on the
- 2:02:24Speaker 2: ice about 13 minutes a game, but Barrett Hayden has
- 2:02:26Speaker 2: been really, really good Through this first seven games.
- 2:02:31Speaker 3: Oh, man.
- 2:02:32Speaker 8: Last night, I could have been the best forward. Won
- 2:02:36Speaker 8: seven of his eight face-offs on the shorthanded goal that
- 2:02:42Speaker 8: Sergeyev scored. He did three things on an ice sheet
- 2:02:51Speaker 8: that's 200 feet long that occurred on both ends. He
- 2:02:55Speaker 8: was involved in kind of stripping the puck away. Um, from,
- 2:03:00Speaker 8: from Toronto. I think he took it from, from Gavin McKenna.
- 2:03:05Speaker 1: And he did.
- 2:03:06Speaker 3: Yep.
- 2:03:07Speaker 8: He stripped the puck away, forced it around behind the net.
- 2:03:10Speaker 8: Stenland recovered it, made a straight line pass to Hayden
- 2:03:15Speaker 8: coming up ice. He's going in hard to the net,
- 2:03:18Speaker 8: got denied on his breakaway, stayed in front of the net,
- 2:03:23Speaker 8: created a distraction. got the Toronto D man, Nick Blake
- 2:03:29Speaker 8: and ship kind of turned around, which turned the goalie around.
- 2:03:32Speaker 8: Cause you got a big D man in your blue
- 2:03:34Speaker 8: paint is your goal. He's trying to make a save.
- 2:03:37Speaker 8: And here comes Mikhail Sergeyev. Oh, I think I'll just
- 2:03:41Speaker 8: flip this in and score a goal to make it three, nothing,
- 2:03:44Speaker 8: but force the puck free received a pass, created a
- 2:03:50Speaker 8: scoring chance that he didn't score on.
- 2:03:52Speaker 3: And then.
- 2:03:54Speaker 8: Was still part of the goal being scored and was
- 2:03:57Speaker 8: the reason it was scored because he kept going when
- 2:04:01Speaker 8: he got denied. He's, he's been great and he's got
- 2:04:06Speaker 8: the longest scoring streak on the, on the team, which
- 2:04:08Speaker 8: is four games. He's got five assists in his last
- 2:04:10Speaker 8: four games. So you look at that and, and him and,
- 2:04:13Speaker 8: and Anders Lee and Kyle Yamamoto, the last couple of
- 2:04:15Speaker 8: games have been really good last night. They out attempted
- 2:04:18Speaker 8: the Maple Leafs 15 to one and outshot him six
- 2:04:22Speaker 8: to nothing. So I've loved, loved, loved, loved, loved, loved
- 2:04:28Speaker 8: Barrett Hayden early, especially the last couple of games.
- 2:04:34Speaker 2: Last thing before we let you go, do you like
- 2:04:36Speaker 2: the frozen frenzy where they pack them all in and
- 2:04:39Speaker 2: it makes it so, I mean, you're watching a mammoth game.
- 2:04:41Speaker 2: You can't see any of the rest of what's going
- 2:04:43Speaker 2: on around the NHL.
- 2:04:44Speaker 8: That's what I was going to say, man. The only
- 2:04:45Speaker 8: thing that sucks about it is we're playing a game.
- 2:04:50Speaker 8: it was kind of fun having hockey start at four
- 2:04:54Speaker 8: mountain time yesterday. So I'm in, I'm in our mountain
- 2:04:56Speaker 8: blue radio studios getting ready for the game and hockey
- 2:04:59Speaker 8: was on at four. So that was cool. It was
- 2:05:02Speaker 8: on an hour earlier. And then, you know, um, we
- 2:05:05Speaker 8: go play our game and heck yeah, I'm looking at
- 2:05:08Speaker 8: scores every, every media time out. Cause it was, it was,
- 2:05:12Speaker 8: it was just such a, an overwhelming thing and i
- 2:05:16Speaker 8: i loved it uh and then after the game um
- 2:05:21Speaker 8: you don't usually have this by the time we get
- 2:05:23Speaker 8: off the air and if you've ever heard hockey night
- 2:05:26Speaker 8: utah on the radio you'll you'll understand sometimes we go
- 2:05:28Speaker 8: along um for a while and when we got off
- 2:05:32Speaker 8: the air san jose and boston was still going and
- 2:05:35Speaker 8: had 10 minutes left in the third period so that
- 2:05:38Speaker 8: was a 9 p.m mountain time start so kind of
- 2:05:40Speaker 8: book ended around it but yeah i thought it was
- 2:05:42Speaker 8: fun i like it i like just more hockey, the better.
- 2:05:46Speaker 1: So don't do it every night, but it was fun
- 2:05:48Speaker 1: that way.
- 2:05:49Speaker 8: It would have been fun if there was 15 games
- 2:05:51Speaker 8: and we weren't playing and you could just veg out
- 2:05:54Speaker 8: and watch all of them.
- 2:05:56Speaker 2: Adrian, it's always great having you come in. Appreciate your
- 2:05:58Speaker 2: time and your insight, my friend.
- 2:06:00Speaker 8: Thank you, Sean. Appreciate you having me.
- 2:06:02Speaker 1: See you next week.
- 2:06:02Speaker 2: That's Adrian Denny between the pipes. Our mammoth insider brought
- 2:06:06Speaker 2: to you by Aladdin industries, Valley plumbing, heating, and cooling.
- 2:06:10Speaker 2: All right, we'll check in on the latest with the
- 2:06:12Speaker 2: Utah Royals. Two games left in their season. Both of
- 2:06:15Speaker 2: them are at home. Kiki Solano, their marketing director, joins
- 2:06:20Speaker 2: us next. It's the Sean O'Connell Show on ESPN 700
- 2:06:22Speaker 2: and 92 on FM.
- 2:06:33Speaker 5: This is the Sean O'Connell Show, your home of the
- 2:06:36Speaker 5: best inside of your Utes. Let's get back to OC
- 2:06:40Speaker 5: from the Murdoch Chevrolet studio of ESPN 792.1 FM.
- 2:06:50Speaker 9: Welcome back to the Sean O'Connell Show.
- 2:06:53Speaker 2: Time to check in on what's going on with the
- 2:06:55Speaker 2: Utah Royals. Got a couple more home games. A couple
- 2:07:00Speaker 2: more opportunities for you to see this team on the
- 2:07:03Speaker 2: home field down at America First. We welcome Kiki Solano
- 2:07:07Speaker 2: from the Royals to talk about what's coming up.
- 2:07:09Speaker 1: Kiki, welcome to the show.
- 2:07:10Speaker 3: How are you? I'm doing great.
- 2:07:13Speaker 11: How are you doing?
- 2:07:14Speaker 1: Doing all right. I mentioned it. Only two games left
- 2:07:17Speaker 1: at home. And, you know, this team.
- 2:07:22Speaker 2: I think playoff bound number four in the standings right now.
- 2:07:25Speaker 2: So we'll get to that here in a second, but
- 2:07:27Speaker 2: Saturday it's the Kansas city current on the home field,
- 2:07:30Speaker 2: breast cancer awareness match. What's going on down there at
- 2:07:33Speaker 2: America first field.
- 2:07:35Speaker 11: Oh, man, what's not going on? We have a lot happening.
- 2:07:38Speaker 11: Like you said, Breast Cancer Awareness Night. So first 4,000
- 2:07:40Speaker 11: fans in are getting pink scrunchies in honor of that.
- 2:07:44Speaker 11: We also have a player who is putting on her
- 2:07:47Speaker 11: own breast cancer awareness auction. Paige Cronin's teaming up with
- 2:07:50Speaker 11: the rest of the players, and they are donating some
- 2:07:53Speaker 11: of their team official gear. And as people auction for that,
- 2:07:57Speaker 11: all proceeds will go to Breast Cancer Awareness.
- 2:08:00Speaker 3: Research.
- 2:08:01Speaker 11: We're also doing something with the Policy Project where you
- 2:08:05Speaker 11: can come early, you can pack 1,000 menstrual kits that
- 2:08:10Speaker 11: will be donated to students all across the state of
- 2:08:13Speaker 11: Utah to have access to period products. And then we
- 2:08:18Speaker 11: will also be doing a sports broad drive so that
- 2:08:21Speaker 11: girls can have access to that as well. So bring
- 2:08:23Speaker 11: your new sports broad, get ready for some fun, breast
- 2:08:26Speaker 11: cancer awareness stuff. We are so excited.
- 2:08:29Speaker 2: That's Saturday. There's no Utah home game. So you youths fans,
- 2:08:33Speaker 2: you don't have tickets. You're not going to Boulder. So
- 2:08:36Speaker 2: get down there to America first field. and check out
- 2:08:39Speaker 2: the breast cancer awareness match against the Kansas city current.
- 2:08:43Speaker 2: And then on the heels of that next Friday night,
- 2:08:46Speaker 2: Seattle on the home field to close out the season.
- 2:08:50Speaker 2: What goes on at the season finale?
- 2:08:52Speaker 3: Kiki.
- 2:08:53Speaker 11: Oh, the season finale is the time we want to
- 2:08:55Speaker 11: make sure that fans know they are so loved. So
- 2:08:58Speaker 11: we're actually doing a couple fun things for them. Pre-game
- 2:09:01Speaker 11: on the plaza, an hour and a half before kickoff,
- 2:09:04Speaker 11: we have a Taylor Swift cover artist who is going
- 2:09:07Speaker 11: to be there, the unofficial lovers tour. So you'll want
- 2:09:10Speaker 11: to get there early for that. And then because our
- 2:09:12Speaker 11: fans are our besties, we also have limited friendship bracelets
- 2:09:17Speaker 11: that are Utah Royals themed that will go out to
- 2:09:20Speaker 11: fans who arrive first as well.
- 2:09:23Speaker 2: Tickets are available for that rsl.com slash Utah Royals for
- 2:09:28Speaker 2: all the information as the season finale Friday, October 23rd
- 2:09:33Speaker 2: against Seattle this weekend. It's the Kansas City Current coming in.
- 2:09:38Speaker 2: And then fourth place in the league standing. So what's
- 2:09:41Speaker 2: playoff soccer going to look like?
- 2:09:42Speaker 11: Playoff soccer is going to be so fun. We are
- 2:09:47Speaker 11: so close to officially clinching playoffs. And this is the
- 2:09:52Speaker 11: first time that the Utah Royals will have ever clinched
- 2:09:54Speaker 11: playoffs in the history of our program.
- 2:09:56Speaker 12: So we're still new.
- 2:09:57Speaker 11: We're only a few years back in the market, but
- 2:09:59Speaker 11: it would be really, really exciting for us if we
- 2:10:02Speaker 11: secure one of those top four spots. Like you said,
- 2:10:04Speaker 11: we're number four right now, but if we stay in
- 2:10:07Speaker 11: one of those top four spots, then we'll also get
- 2:10:08Speaker 11: a home playoff game. So there's a huge push for
- 2:10:11Speaker 11: that right now.
- 2:10:12Speaker 1: Okay.
- 2:10:12Speaker 2: So let's assume that happens, right? We're going to send
- 2:10:15Speaker 2: out the good vibes. We're going to, we're going to
- 2:10:17Speaker 2: make that happen. What kind of, What kind of insight,
- 2:10:21Speaker 2: what kind of a preview can you give us on
- 2:10:23Speaker 2: what might be planned for a home playoff game?
- 2:10:26Speaker 11: Oh, I love this question. A home playoff game would
- 2:10:30Speaker 11: be the weekend somewhere between November 6th, 7th or 8th,
- 2:10:35Speaker 11: you know, TBD on the exact date. But we would
- 2:10:38Speaker 11: be bringing out all the stops. We want to make
- 2:10:40Speaker 11: sure fans have a fantastic time. So stay tuned. I'm
- 2:10:44Speaker 11: sure we will have some type of giveaway item if
- 2:10:47Speaker 11: we get to that point. The hope is to have
- 2:10:49Speaker 11: a home playoff game. Regardless, we will make sure that
- 2:10:52Speaker 11: fans can come and we can watch playoffs together.
- 2:10:55Speaker 3: All right.
- 2:10:55Speaker 2: What's the best place for people to find all this information?
- 2:10:58Speaker 2: If they didn't get a chance to catch the show
- 2:11:00Speaker 2: live or they're like me and they just forget things easily,
- 2:11:03Speaker 2: maybe to get their season tickets for next year, whatever
- 2:11:06Speaker 2: you want to do to support the Utah Royals, where's
- 2:11:08Speaker 2: the best place to find the info?
- 2:11:10Speaker 10: Absolutely.
- 2:11:11Speaker 11: Utahroyals.com has all the info you need, or you can
- 2:11:14Speaker 11: check us out on Instagram at Utah Royals FC.
- 2:11:18Speaker 2: Kiki, appreciate you stopping by and letting us know what's
- 2:11:21Speaker 2: coming up.
- 2:11:21Speaker 1: Thanks for your time.
- 2:11:23Speaker 12: Absolutely.
- 2:11:23Speaker 3: Thank you.
- 2:11:24Speaker 2: That's Kiki Solano from the Utah Royals. Only two more opportunities.
- 2:11:30Speaker 2: So bundle up a little bit. Actually, the weather is
- 2:11:32Speaker 2: supposed to be nice again on Friday, right? I think
- 2:11:35Speaker 2: we're looking at mid sixties.
- 2:11:39Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:11:39Speaker 6: Starting tomorrow, starting tomorrow, we're back into the sixties from
- 2:11:44Speaker 6: what I saw. So this is our last kind of
- 2:11:46Speaker 6: cold fall day, if you will. We're going to be
- 2:11:51Speaker 6: Back up 70 by Monday. How are you doing on
- 2:11:53Speaker 6: the cold, by the way?
- 2:11:55Speaker 2: Every time the little cold snap hits and the air
- 2:11:57Speaker 2: smells different and the snow comes down on the mat,
- 2:12:00Speaker 2: my blood gets real thin during the summer and I
- 2:12:03Speaker 2: become a big giant sissy about the cold. I woke
- 2:12:08Speaker 2: up this morning and my floor is like the fake hardwood.
- 2:12:12Speaker 1: It's cold. A little cold. I'm like, oh, come on! So,
- 2:12:15Speaker 1: do you.
- 2:12:19Speaker 6: You don't sleep with socks? You just barefoot? No, I'm
- 2:12:23Speaker 6: not a serial killer, James.
- 2:12:24Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't either. I'm just saying some people do. 877-353-0700.
- 2:12:28Speaker 2: Tell us if you sleep with socks on so we
- 2:12:30Speaker 2: can block you and prevent you from.
- 2:12:33Speaker 1: Listening to our show.
- 2:12:34Speaker 6: But I'm saying, so you feel that as soon as
- 2:12:37Speaker 6: you get it. You're like, oh, yeah, this is cold.
- 2:12:39Speaker 1: For sure. Yeah. I smell the cold first. You smell
- 2:12:43Speaker 1: it first. Yeah. You smell the cold coming first. A
- 2:12:45Speaker 1: little Gilmore Girls thing. You smell snow. Is that from
- 2:12:49Speaker 1: Gilmore Girls?
- 2:12:50Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 2:12:50Speaker 1: I've never watched an episode. I've watched a few. I
- 2:12:54Speaker 1: haven't seen. I know who they are. Like, I can
- 2:12:57Speaker 1: recognize who they are because of all the advertising. Your
- 2:13:00Speaker 1: wife's not into Gilmore Girls? Maybe before we met. Okay.
- 2:13:05Speaker 1: Never seen it.
- 2:13:06Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:13:06Speaker 6: Anyway, there's one of the characters. She claims she can
- 2:13:11Speaker 6: smell snow before it comes. It's her superpower. So you
- 2:13:14Speaker 6: can smell the cold. Well, maybe it's the same smell.
- 2:13:17Speaker 6: It's probably the same smell. It's the same smell. Uh, yeah, I,
- 2:13:22Speaker 6: so from St. George doesn't get very cold down there
- 2:13:27Speaker 6: as everyone knows.
- 2:13:28Speaker 3: Right.
- 2:13:28Speaker 6: So when I first moved up here, this is coming
- 2:13:31Speaker 6: on almost 10 years ago now. Um, yeah, I was,
- 2:13:37Speaker 6: I was, I was a pretty big sissy when it
- 2:13:38Speaker 6: came to the cold. Now I feel like first off it,
- 2:13:43Speaker 6: it's gotten a lot more mild, um, Over the last
- 2:13:45Speaker 6: few years, it's been a lot more milder, mild winters,
- 2:13:49Speaker 6: except for that one, what, three, four years ago when
- 2:13:51Speaker 6: we had like a billion feet of snow. But also
- 2:13:56Speaker 6: just I've gotten acclimated to it. It doesn't doesn't bother
- 2:13:59Speaker 6: me that much. I used to think 60 something was
- 2:14:02Speaker 6: in 50s was cold. Now I'm like, that's this is
- 2:14:05Speaker 6: actually kind of pleasant. I, uh.
- 2:14:10Speaker 2: I used to enjoy the cold and now I'm getting soft,
- 2:14:12Speaker 2: but that's all right. I'll tell you what warms you
- 2:14:15Speaker 2: up though. When it is getting a little bit colder,
- 2:14:17Speaker 2: what makes you feel like, all right, this is fine.
- 2:14:21Speaker 2: This is worth it is when you're standing out there
- 2:14:23Speaker 2: next to the smoker next to the grill and you've
- 2:14:25Speaker 2: got something on that bad boy. that you know is
- 2:14:28Speaker 2: just going to be fantastic, delicious, and perfect for the family,
- 2:14:32Speaker 2: or better yet, for the entire neighborhood as the watch
- 2:14:35Speaker 2: party for Utah versus Colorado. That's what you're preparing for
- 2:14:39Speaker 2: this weekend. Maybe you're a BYU fan who actually listens
- 2:14:41Speaker 2: to us here on ESPN 700. Maybe you're going to
- 2:14:44Speaker 2: shock everyone in Provo who's going down to the tailgate.
- 2:14:50Speaker 1: They have one of those, right? for the Notre Dame game.
- 2:14:52Speaker 2: You're going to show up for the game day crew
- 2:14:55Speaker 2: with the best possible meat dish from you guessed it.
- 2:14:59Speaker 2: Southern steer butcher. We're down in Saratoga Springs at 17
- 2:15:03Speaker 2: Oh five North Redwood road. Give him a call at
- 2:15:05Speaker 2: 8 0 1 8 9 5 31 Oh one. The
- 2:15:09Speaker 2: only thing better than going in and grabbing You know,
- 2:15:12Speaker 2: a few pounds of steak or a few pounds of
- 2:15:15Speaker 2: beef ribs or maybe even a couple of lobster tails
- 2:15:19Speaker 2: or a crock pot's worth of chicken. The only thing
- 2:15:21Speaker 2: better than that from Southern Steer is something that they
- 2:15:24Speaker 2: are offering now. Instead of buying a few pounds of
- 2:15:29Speaker 2: their fresh, high-quality, hormone- and chemical-free meat, why don't you
- 2:15:34Speaker 2: get a bunch of poundage? Introducing two different options for
- 2:15:41Speaker 2: the quarter cow. I love when you measure something by
- 2:15:45Speaker 2: a fraction of an animal.
- 2:15:47Speaker 1: We should do everything this way.
- 2:15:50Speaker 2: You should be able to walk into any restaurant and say,
- 2:15:54Speaker 2: I would like an eighth of a pig, please. Southern
- 2:15:57Speaker 2: steer is now offering you quarter cows. You can do
- 2:16:01Speaker 2: the value quarter cow. That is 90 pounds of the
- 2:16:04Speaker 2: value cuts, or you can do the premium quarter cow,
- 2:16:08Speaker 2: which is the fancier higher end type cuts. and that
- 2:16:12Speaker 2: you're going to get 60 pounds.
- 2:16:30Speaker 2: You'll eat all of those in one sitting,
- 2:16:33Speaker 2: by the way. Six pound brisket, six pounds of ground beef,
- 2:16:38Speaker 2: and six pounds of the gourmet burgers.
- 2:16:40Speaker 1: So, That's 60 pounds.
- 2:16:43Speaker 2: They call it a quarter cow, but of course, when
- 2:16:45Speaker 2: you're throwing some wagyu in, some gourmet burger in, it's
- 2:16:49Speaker 2: not all coming from the same cow. Oh, man, my
- 2:16:53Speaker 2: mouth is watering thinking of having a freezer full of
- 2:16:56Speaker 2: of Southern steer butcher meat. And by the way, if
- 2:16:59Speaker 2: you're someone who's in salt Lake city, like me, and
- 2:17:03Speaker 2: it is a little bit of a jaunt to get
- 2:17:05Speaker 2: out there to 1705 North Redwood road, this solves the problem.
- 2:17:09Speaker 1: You go down there. Once you stock up the freezer,
- 2:17:12Speaker 1: you got it.
- 2:17:13Speaker 2: All for the next 60 pounds should last you about
- 2:17:17Speaker 2: a month. 90 pounds should last you about a month
- 2:17:19Speaker 2: and a half, if my math is correct, on how much.
- 2:17:22Speaker 6: Beef we should be eating every day. Do you just
- 2:17:24Speaker 6: buy four-quarter cows? I want a whole cow, and then
- 2:17:27Speaker 6: you don't have to go back for however long.
- 2:17:30Speaker 2: If you say, hey, give me a whole cow, they're
- 2:17:33Speaker 2: going to be like, what do you mean? Okay, I'll
- 2:17:34Speaker 2: take four-quarter cows.
- 2:17:35Speaker 3: I'll take five.
- 2:17:35Speaker 1: I'll take four quarters. You want the 90 pounds or
- 2:17:38Speaker 1: the 60 pounds?
- 2:17:39Speaker 4: All right.
- 2:17:39Speaker 1: Give me two of each. Give me two of the
- 2:17:42Speaker 1: premium quarters. Give me two of the value. I don't
- 2:17:45Speaker 1: want to see you for five years. Okay.
- 2:17:47Speaker 6: I'm trying to do one trip here for a long time. No, uh,
- 2:17:51Speaker 6: worth going worth, worth the trip though. Uh, Southern steer
- 2:17:55Speaker 6: for sure.
- 2:17:58Speaker 2: Tell Dan and Aubrey, you heard about it on the
- 2:17:59Speaker 2: Sean O'Connell show. Tell him you want to try the
- 2:18:02Speaker 2: black steak crust seasoning that they got down there.
- 2:18:05Speaker 1: Ooh, Just take my word for it, all right?
- 2:18:09Speaker 2: And if you tell them, hey, I heard these marinated
- 2:18:12Speaker 2: steak tips are really excellent. They usually have samples in store,
- 2:18:16Speaker 2: and if they don't, they'll fire some up for you.
- 2:18:18Speaker 2: It takes just a few minutes in the air fryer.
- 2:18:20Speaker 2: They use this vacuum sealed, this vacuum marinator that just, like,
- 2:18:27Speaker 2: infuses the flavor into the meats in a way that, honestly,
- 2:18:31Speaker 2: we need one of these at the house. They've got
- 2:18:34Speaker 2: it all at Southern Steer. down in Saratoga Springs, best
- 2:18:38Speaker 2: in the business, 801-895-3101. And remember, it is a cleaner,
- 2:18:43Speaker 2: healthier meat for your family. The pork, the chicken, the beef,
- 2:18:46Speaker 2: all of it ethically sourced, without the hormones, without the chemicals,
- 2:18:53Speaker 2: without the long, disgusting routes for shipping. They get it
- 2:18:56Speaker 2: to Southern Steer quickly. They get it to your freezer,
- 2:18:59Speaker 2: to your plate, fresh. Tell them OC sent you.
- 2:19:05Speaker 1: All right. One more break. We'll finish the show with
- 2:19:07Speaker 1: a little bit of crosstalk.
- 2:19:10Speaker 2: Check in on a conversation that we just kind of
- 2:19:12Speaker 2: stumbled upon about the ethics, for lack of a better term,
- 2:19:18Speaker 2: of sports gambling advertisement in college sports. Would you be
- 2:19:23Speaker 2: okay if the University of Utah got on board with
- 2:19:27Speaker 2: what everyone else is doing and said, yeah, a jersey
- 2:19:30Speaker 2: sponsor for DraftKings or PrizePix or whatever else, would that
- 2:19:34Speaker 2: affect the way that you viewed the sports product at
- 2:19:37Speaker 2: your favorite university at all?
- 2:19:39Speaker 9: 877-353-0700.
- 2:19:40Speaker 1: Sean O'Connell Show, ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 2:19:50Speaker 5: You're listening to The Sean O'Connell Show, your source for
- 2:19:53Speaker 5: the best youths football coverage. Here's OC from the Murdoch
- 2:19:57Speaker 5: Hyundai Studio of ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
- 2:19:59Speaker 1: Final segment of the.
- 2:20:05Speaker 2: Show brought to you by our friend at Advanced Window Products.

- 2:20:22Speaker 2: months of no interest on replacing your windows. Now is
- 2:20:27Speaker 2: the time to take advantage of it. It's a little
- 2:20:30Speaker 2: cold and chilly right now. Takes about two weeks from
- 2:20:33Speaker 2: when you start this process. Sorry, takes about six weeks
- 2:20:36Speaker 2: from when you start this process to when the new
- 2:20:39Speaker 2: ones are actually in the house.
- 2:20:41Speaker 1: Maybe eight. All right.
- 2:20:44Speaker 2: Some interesting texts about our gambling sponsor conversation.
- 2:20:50Speaker 1: This is from Craig. I want to get back to
- 2:20:52Speaker 1: the gambling thing.
- 2:20:53Speaker 2: If you think the majority of Utah fans don't bet
- 2:20:55Speaker 2: you're wrong. I think that the majority of Utah fans
- 2:20:58Speaker 2: probably do bet.
- 2:20:59Speaker 1: At least recreationally.
- 2:21:02Speaker 2: Why do you think they wanted to change? Kyle rarely
- 2:21:04Speaker 2: covered what he could. I don't think that has anything
- 2:21:07Speaker 2: to do with With why certain people in powerful positions
- 2:21:12Speaker 2: at the University of Utah were over the Kyle Whittingham thing.
- 2:21:18Speaker 2: If you don't think big boosters, if you think big
- 2:21:20Speaker 2: boosters don't gamble, Utah, you're wrong. I think they probably
- 2:21:23Speaker 2: do gamble, Craig. I'm a former professional sports better, and
- 2:21:28Speaker 2: I could tell you stories about the flights to Vegas
- 2:21:30Speaker 2: from Salt Lake City.
- 2:21:31Speaker 1: It would blow your mind. Probably not. Morgan covers all
- 2:21:35Speaker 1: the time. So forth. There we go. There's a point
- 2:21:37Speaker 1: we can agree on.
- 2:21:38Speaker 2: Morgan covers. Morgan wins and covers. Good teams win, great
- 2:21:43Speaker 2: teams cover. Look, does sports gambling affect personnel decisions on
- 2:21:51Speaker 2: a college football sideline? Are you firing a coach because
- 2:21:54Speaker 2: he doesn't cover? You have to have a degenerate addict
- 2:22:00Speaker 2: mega booster if that is the case.
- 2:22:02Speaker 1: 0 6 2 8.
- 2:22:07Speaker 2: I grew up with gambling in Nevada. We took classes
- 2:22:10Speaker 2: on math of chance, permutations and combinations in high school.
- 2:22:13Speaker 2: I consider myself an educated gambler as such. I am
- 2:22:16Speaker 2: absolutely against colleges, networks, and pro teams being associated with
- 2:22:21Speaker 2: gambling entities.
- 2:22:22Speaker 1: Most people don't.
- 2:22:23Speaker 2: Really understand how gambling decays and destroys the integrity of
- 2:22:26Speaker 2: the game. Was the game fix was the line fix
- 2:22:29Speaker 2: where the officials fixing was the coach where the players
- 2:22:32Speaker 2: fixing their own stats was The line, the over, the under,
- 2:22:34Speaker 2: et cetera. Brendan Sorsby placed over 10,000 bets over two
- 2:22:38Speaker 2: or three years. No problem there, right? No, there was
- 2:22:42Speaker 2: a problem. They sniffed the problem out. And Brendan Sorsby
- 2:22:46Speaker 2: is not playing football because of his involvement. He is
- 2:22:51Speaker 2: being punished. Now, I don't think he's the only one
- 2:22:53Speaker 2: doing it. I think he's the one that got caught.
- 2:22:56Speaker 2: I think that he is paying a price for probably
- 2:23:00Speaker 2: thousands of other college sports athletes who were just smarter
- 2:23:03Speaker 2: about it than him. That is one of those lessons
- 2:23:06Speaker 2: that you learn in life, and some people have to
- 2:23:09Speaker 2: learn it the hard way. Would you accept the fact
- 2:23:12Speaker 2: that Utah might at some point, if the rules allowed,
- 2:23:16Speaker 2: be willing to take gambling sponsor money for their basketball
- 2:23:21Speaker 2: jersey patch or the Red Rocks leotards or whatever?
- 2:23:24Speaker 1: 877-353-0700. It is ubiquitous. It is here. It's not going away.
- 2:23:31Speaker 1: Are you willing to say, all right, you guys, it's
- 2:23:36Speaker 1: up to you to handle. Craig says, I underestimate. I
- 2:23:40Speaker 1: don't underestimate anything.
- 2:23:45Speaker 2: Well, maybe I'm underestimating the influence that gambling has over
- 2:23:49Speaker 2: high-level decision-making on a campus. I will never agree with
- 2:23:55Speaker 2: the idea that Kyle Whittingham wore out his welcome because
- 2:23:59Speaker 2: he didn't cover for the betters. The drive with Spence check.
- 2:24:06Speaker 1: It's his next. Keep your texts coming in. It's always
- 2:24:09Speaker 1: great to hear from you, even at the end of
- 2:24:10Speaker 1: the show. Hi, Spence. It's an interesting topic.
- 2:24:16Speaker 13: I'm one who tends to believe that people should have
- 2:24:20Speaker 13: freedom of choice with most things. We do live in
- 2:24:23Speaker 13: a state where a lot of things are influenced by
- 2:24:26Speaker 13: the local belief system.
- 2:24:28Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 2:24:29Speaker 13: Um, and that, which is, I guess they're right. Uh,
- 2:24:32Speaker 13: in a way founded the place. We don't have to
- 2:24:34Speaker 13: get into stolen land conversations today and such, but let's not,
- 2:24:39Speaker 13: we don't have to get into that. So you can
- 2:24:41Speaker 13: complain about the lack of separation between church and state
- 2:24:44Speaker 13: all you want, but if you don't like it, you
- 2:24:47Speaker 13: probably need to move because it's probably not changing anytime soon.
- 2:24:50Speaker 13: Like Ryan Smith just announced his second phase for the
- 2:24:54Speaker 13: plans of downtown Salt Lake City.
- 2:24:55Speaker 2: The renderings look cool.
- 2:24:57Speaker 13: The renderings look really cool, but there are all these
- 2:24:59Speaker 13: nerds in the comments like, don't put bars, don't put
- 2:25:02Speaker 13: any bars down there, Ryan. Don't put any clubs down there, Ryan.
- 2:25:04Speaker 13: There's all of these degenerates in Salt Lake. That's how
- 2:25:07Speaker 13: they sound in my head.
- 2:25:09Speaker 1: Okay, fair.
- 2:25:10Speaker 13: And it's like, dude, just stay in Provo. Leave us
- 2:25:13Speaker 13: alone up here. Give people the freedom to choose the
- 2:25:15Speaker 13: things that they want to do. And I kind of
- 2:25:17Speaker 13: feel that way about being able to place a bet
- 2:25:19Speaker 13: on a game. But there's an undeniable danger to this
- 2:25:24Speaker 13: thing with your texture's point about how it's permeating through
- 2:25:30Speaker 13: the culture of the leagues and the teams being in
- 2:25:33Speaker 13: business with the sportsbooks.
- 2:25:35Speaker 1: I never thought I'd see that day.
- 2:25:36Speaker 13: Like, David Stern, may he rest in peace, was so
- 2:25:40Speaker 13: hell-bent on keeping an NBA franchise out of Las Vegas,
- 2:25:45Speaker 13: and everybody seemed to have that same idea simply because
- 2:25:49Speaker 13: of the dangers of of a team being there in
- 2:25:53Speaker 13: the desert where gambling is legal. And for a long time,
- 2:25:58Speaker 13: one of like two or three places along with Atlantic city, uh,
- 2:26:02Speaker 13: where you could actually go to casinos. Now, of course
- 2:26:04Speaker 13: that's changed and there are casinos all over the place.
- 2:26:08Speaker 13: And now with the implementation of federalized legal gambling for now,
- 2:26:13Speaker 13: who knows what's going to happen? Like, All of these
- 2:26:15Speaker 13: conversations about our local government trying to outlaw prediction markets
- 2:26:20Speaker 13: and such can pull up DraftKings right now. You can
- 2:26:22Speaker 13: put a bet on the BYU game right now on
- 2:26:24Speaker 13: DraftKings in Utah.
- 2:26:26Speaker 1: You can.
- 2:26:27Speaker 13: It's not illegal here. For all the battles that they're
- 2:26:32Speaker 13: trying to undertake to make sure this thing is outlawed somehow.
- 2:26:38Speaker 13: You can place a bet right now in the state
- 2:26:40Speaker 13: of Utah. And you can win money. Now you have
- 2:26:43Speaker 13: to pay taxes on it. You can get in trouble.
- 2:26:45Speaker 13: Like if you hit a big parlay, if you hit
- 2:26:47Speaker 13: one of those DraftKings.
- 2:26:48Speaker 8: $ 250, 000.
- 2:26:49Speaker 13: Windows, you can withdraw the money from your DraftKings account
- 2:26:54Speaker 13: in your bank account, but you're going to have to
- 2:26:55Speaker 13: pay taxes on it or else that's the only area
- 2:26:58Speaker 13: you'll be in trouble. But let me land the plane
- 2:27:00Speaker 13: here because I'm getting lost. There's a reason why potentially
- 2:27:05Speaker 13: the greatest baseball player of all time was told you
- 2:27:07Speaker 13: are no longer allowed around this sport, okay? Pete Rose
- 2:27:12Speaker 13: gambled on his own team and had to wait till
- 2:27:16Speaker 13: he was dead to actually be ostracized, right? Because for
- 2:27:21Speaker 13: so long, commissioners, team owners, anybody involved in professional sports
- 2:27:27Speaker 13: ran the other way when gambling was mentioned as a
- 2:27:31Speaker 13: potential partner or even in the ecosystem at all. And
- 2:27:35Speaker 13: now you can't watch a damn game without a live
- 2:27:38Speaker 13: update on what the current spread is or over under
- 2:27:41Speaker 13: i mean we're hit over the head with.
- 2:27:43Speaker 2: It now when is the last time anybody watched a
- 2:27:45Speaker 2: sports game without a budweiser commercial sure right i mean
- 2:27:50Speaker 2: when's the last time legitimately zero i mean in 1907
- 2:27:55Speaker 2: maybe like like prohibition It's new, so we're alarmed by it.
- 2:28:02Speaker 2: And when weed is fully, fully legalized, it'll be the
- 2:28:05Speaker 2: same thing with that on television commercials or whatever. And
- 2:28:08Speaker 2: it'll be new, so we'll be alarmed by that. I
- 2:28:12Speaker 2: think that's where we're at with it. Maybe it is
- 2:28:15Speaker 2: more dangerous than alcohol.
- 2:28:17Speaker 1: Maybe it's not. Maybe it's less. Maybe it's somewhere in
- 2:28:19Speaker 1: the middle.
- 2:28:20Speaker 2: Maybe it's dangerous for a certain personality type and we
- 2:28:23Speaker 2: don't know enough about the psychology of it yet. Maybe
- 2:28:26Speaker 2: it's disproportionately, well, I think statistically we know it disproportionately
- 2:28:29Speaker 2: affects young men, and that's why Elder Christofferson, I hope
- 2:28:36Speaker 2: I got his title right, made a speech about it
- 2:28:39Speaker 2: at General Conference, right? Because this is like, there are
- 2:28:44Speaker 2: things that need, from a sports lens, I don't have
- 2:28:49Speaker 2: a problem with anybody placing a bet. I have a
- 2:28:51Speaker 2: massive problem with some of the stuff the Great Points
- 2:28:54Speaker 2: of Texas are bringing up that if a player or
- 2:28:57Speaker 2: a coach or a referee or a whomever is going
- 2:29:02Speaker 2: to change the way they do things because those bets
- 2:29:05Speaker 2: are being placed and that becomes easier because of the
- 2:29:10Speaker 2: general like pervasiveness of betting now in our culture. Now
- 2:29:14Speaker 2: we're having, now we're talking about a real problem that
- 2:29:16Speaker 2: affects even the non-betters, right? Because that's one thing that
- 2:29:21Speaker 2: you talk about with all these quote unquote vice players.
- 2:29:24Speaker 2: situations is it's very easy to be like, well, if
- 2:29:28Speaker 2: I don't do it, it doesn't affect me.
- 2:29:30Speaker 3: Right.
- 2:29:31Speaker 1: Your, your Smithers voice there.
- 2:29:33Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 2:29:34Speaker 2: Just walk past the bar. Don't worry that the bar
- 2:29:36Speaker 2: is there. Just don't go to the bar. The bar
- 2:29:39Speaker 2: won't affect you. Let other people go to the bar.
- 2:29:40Speaker 2: If they want to go to the bar, right. The
- 2:29:42Speaker 2: bar won't affect you until it does until the drunk
- 2:29:44Speaker 2: guy stumbles out of the bar and wants to pick
- 2:29:46Speaker 2: a fight with you. And then you're just like, Oh,
- 2:29:48Speaker 2: wait a minute. I didn't even engage in this, but
- 2:29:51Speaker 2: now it affects me.
- 2:29:52Speaker 3: So yeah.
- 2:29:53Speaker 2: Like I, It's probably worth all of us, myself included,
- 2:29:56Speaker 2: opening up the possibility of going down the rabbit hole
- 2:30:00Speaker 2: and saying, what is the real outcome here? What is
- 2:30:04Speaker 2: the worst-case scenario? What's the best-case scenario? Where is the
- 2:30:08Speaker 2: worth in it? And at the end of the day,
- 2:30:10Speaker 2: nothing's going to change, but how we talk to our
- 2:30:13Speaker 2: kids about it seems important. How we talk to our
- 2:30:16Speaker 2: communities about it seems important. How it is handled by
- 2:30:19Speaker 2: these leagues seems very, very important.
- 2:30:21Speaker 1: And I think.
- 2:30:23Speaker 2: While it is a new frontier, I think that they're
- 2:30:25Speaker 2: doing a decent job of regulation at this moment, but
- 2:30:30Speaker 2: that's just based on the information we have, which is
- 2:30:33Speaker 2: not enough.
- 2:30:33Speaker 13: Well, and remember the bottom line about why commissioners and
- 2:30:40Speaker 13: team owners and members of the Board of Governors in
- 2:30:44Speaker 13: professional leagues were so terrified to have gambling as part
- 2:30:48Speaker 13: of their ecosystem is it really is the one thing
- 2:30:53Speaker 13: It could potentially lead to consumers turning off the TV
- 2:30:56Speaker 13: or not going to games anymore, which is the potential
- 2:30:59Speaker 13: of them believing that your game is compromised. The potential
- 2:31:03Speaker 13: of them thinking the one thing that we might have
- 2:31:06Speaker 13: in society left is a meritocracy.
- 2:31:08Speaker 1: Is a game.
- 2:31:08Speaker 13: It's a football game is a basketball game where we
- 2:31:11Speaker 13: turn it on and we believe the greatest athletes in
- 2:31:14Speaker 13: the world are competing at the highest level against each other.
- 2:31:17Speaker 13: And it is the ultimate in live drama because we
- 2:31:19Speaker 13: don't know the outcome. If those outcomes start to be
- 2:31:22Speaker 13: patently compromised, consumers and fans will stop watching and going.
- 2:31:27Speaker 1: That was always what terrified Stern. And now every league
- 2:31:31Speaker 1: is in bed with all of them.
- 2:31:32Speaker 2: I wonder how true that is, because the WWE is
- 2:31:34Speaker 2: huge and you can place bets on it.
- 2:31:36Speaker 13: See, but that's not my I can't speak to that
- 2:31:39Speaker 13: because that's not my thing. If in the very reason
- 2:31:41Speaker 13: it's not my thing is because it's predetermined. But to
- 2:31:43Speaker 13: your point, it is big business.
- 2:31:45Speaker 1: It's so I think you're right.
- 2:31:47Speaker 2: I think I agree with that, that like as soon
- 2:31:49Speaker 2: as you start to doubt whether or not the integrity
- 2:31:51Speaker 2: of the sport is there. then you're probably going to
- 2:31:54Speaker 2: be turned off. I mean, we saw, we saw that
- 2:31:57Speaker 2: at the very beginning of the season with Western Michigan
- 2:32:00Speaker 2: getting jobbed and Michigan getting an extra play and everyone
- 2:32:02Speaker 2: just being like, hold on a minute. It didn't stop
- 2:32:06Speaker 2: anyone from watching college football this year, but it casts
- 2:32:10Speaker 2: some things in into doubt.
- 2:32:12Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 2:32:12Speaker 1: And that's not good for the sport.
- 2:32:14Speaker 13: But there will always be those things where it's like, okay,
- 2:32:17Speaker 13: an official missed a call. Or, okay, Big Ten, you're
- 2:32:20Speaker 13: telling us you have a replay clock. We're not allowed
- 2:32:22Speaker 13: to see it, but you're telling us you have it.
- 2:32:25Speaker 1: That's hard to believe.
- 2:32:27Speaker 13: But is there anyone out there that fully believes that Michigan,
- 2:32:33Speaker 13: like the fix was in, somebody jobbed that game at
- 2:32:37Speaker 13: the end for Michigan to get that win? I don't
- 2:32:39Speaker 13: know that we can really go that far. Did it
- 2:32:41Speaker 13: feel like the call was missed?
- 2:32:43Speaker 4: Yes.
- 2:32:44Speaker 13: As a fan, do you feel a little bit gaslit
- 2:32:46Speaker 13: when the clock says zero.
- 2:32:47Speaker 1: And they're like, Oh, it says zero, but it's not
- 2:32:49Speaker 1: really zero. Yeah, dude, we saw it.
- 2:32:52Speaker 3: Right.
- 2:32:52Speaker 13: So the explanation, the big 10 gave us is we
- 2:32:55Speaker 13: have our own secret replay clock that you're not allowed
- 2:32:58Speaker 13: to see in our secret replay clock at one set.
- 2:33:00Speaker 13: Like that is a look, that's a little bit wild,
- 2:33:04Speaker 13: but there's a big gap between that. And the fix
- 2:33:07Speaker 13: was in a phone call was made by somebody to say, no,
- 2:33:11Speaker 13: we've got to give Michigan one more chance. Cause they
- 2:33:12Speaker 13: still had to get the, you know, JJ had to
- 2:33:14Speaker 13: catch the hail Mary and all that. The societal conversation, Sean,
- 2:33:18Speaker 13: though I find interesting, and I'm no expert here, but
- 2:33:21Speaker 13: you remember that old show, may it rest in peace,
- 2:33:23Speaker 13: Real Sports, with Brian Gumbel on HBO?
- 2:33:26Speaker 3: Yes.
- 2:33:27Speaker 1: Where they were actually trying to.
- 2:33:28Speaker 2: The most pompous of all sports shows in the world.
- 2:33:32Speaker 13: Because he's a pompous individual, but they actually were doing
- 2:33:35Speaker 13: good investigative work. I mean, these were award-winning journalists that
- 2:33:40Speaker 13: actually did try to go do some journalism as opposed
- 2:33:43Speaker 13: to you know, release a country album called diary of
- 2:33:48Speaker 13: a polarizing figure, whatever the hell McAfee's out like journalism
- 2:33:51Speaker 13: once upon a time was different.
- 2:33:53Speaker 1: And this is dated.
- 2:33:54Speaker 13: Cause I think it was probably a decade ago when
- 2:33:56Speaker 13: I saw this show, they had to do away with
- 2:34:01Speaker 13: gambling in England, gambling on the premiership on EPL because
- 2:34:08Speaker 13: they did this entire piece on like, Men who had
- 2:34:13Speaker 13: families and homes and jobs that were now, like, homeless. Like,
- 2:34:19Speaker 13: dudes losing their families, losing their homes, taking out mortgages
- 2:34:22Speaker 13: on their flats.
- 2:34:24Speaker 1: Apartments for the layman. There you go. In order to
- 2:34:27Speaker 1: place massive bets on, like, a Chelsea game. So they
- 2:34:31Speaker 1: did away with it. I don't know what the update is.
- 2:34:33Speaker 13: I would imagine with how widespread the acceptance is now,
- 2:34:36Speaker 13: you can probably gamble on EPL matches overseas.
- 2:34:39Speaker 2: You could walk into, they have seven 11s where that's
- 2:34:42Speaker 2: all it is. You go in and you place a
- 2:34:43Speaker 2: bet over, over in London.
- 2:34:45Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 2:34:45Speaker 1: Okay. Like you walk past eight of them on any
- 2:34:48Speaker 1: high street.
- 2:34:48Speaker 5: Okay.
- 2:34:49Speaker 1: So I did there. You said flats. I said high street.
- 2:34:51Speaker 4: No.
- 2:34:52Speaker 1: Well played, sir. Cheers to you.
- 2:34:54Speaker 13: So yeah, I mean, I mean, look back to, I
- 2:34:56Speaker 13: guess my original statement, I believe everyone should have the
- 2:34:59Speaker 13: right to choose as far as if you want to
- 2:35:02Speaker 13: place a bet, if you want to go to a bar,
- 2:35:05Speaker 13: If it's not your thing, it's fine, but let it
- 2:35:07Speaker 13: be other people's thing. If you don't want to place
- 2:35:09Speaker 13: a bet, that's fine. Just don't place the bet, but
- 2:35:10Speaker 13: let other people place the bet. I do believe society
- 2:35:13Speaker 13: should operate more that way. But there's also some really
- 2:35:17Speaker 13: interesting potential ramifications because there are some people that are
- 2:35:20Speaker 13: wired to not have the ability to decide that, okay,
- 2:35:26Speaker 13: after you just lost $ 200, shut it down. No, I'm
- 2:35:30Speaker 13: going to chase it. Okay, now I just lost $ 400.
- 2:35:32Speaker 13: I can't throw $ 800. And then suddenly you're in the.
- 2:35:35Speaker 1: Hole like $ 10, 000.
- 2:35:36Speaker 13: And you don't have money to pay your bills or
- 2:35:40Speaker 13: put food on the table. Those things should be taken
- 2:35:43Speaker 13: into account. But I guess to bottom line this, because
- 2:35:46Speaker 13: I've probably kept you too long now. If you're clutching
- 2:35:50Speaker 13: your pearls about your favorite team or your favorite university,
- 2:35:55Speaker 13: potentially signing a sponsorship with a gambling company, you better
- 2:35:58Speaker 13: get over it. Because I can promise you, With the
- 2:36:01Speaker 13: situation Utah is in right now, meaning a deal consummated
- 2:36:06Speaker 13: with a private equity group, if DraftKings called Mark Harlan
- 2:36:10Speaker 13: today and said $ 10 million to put DraftKings on Rice-Eccles Stadium,
- 2:36:17Speaker 13: Mark's going to say yes to that. They have to
- 2:36:19Speaker 13: find ways to create revenue because I'm telling you, in
- 2:36:24Speaker 13: a few years.
- 2:36:25Speaker 1: This bill is coming due, man.
- 2:36:27Speaker 13: These private equity guys aren't here to rise and shout
- 2:36:29Speaker 13: and say family on three. They're here to see what
- 2:36:32Speaker 13: sort of return they can make on their investment as
- 2:36:36Speaker 13: a result of the cash infusion they gave the university.
- 2:36:38Speaker 13: And we still don't know those numbers, Sean, but I
- 2:36:40Speaker 13: can tell you these guys are about one thing and
- 2:36:43Speaker 13: one thing only, and I know a bunch of them.
- 2:36:46Speaker 13: What's this look like in five or six years when
- 2:36:48Speaker 13: the bill comes due? And if a $ 10 million partnership
- 2:36:51Speaker 13: with a sportsbook is part of generating revenue to make
- 2:36:54Speaker 13: that right, they'll do it.
- 2:36:56Speaker 1: Will the conference ever allow it? Absolutely.
- 2:36:59Speaker 13: Brett Yormark reeks of a guy that has shares in DraftKings, dude.
- 2:37:04Speaker 1: He probably started PrizePix. That's a good point.
- 2:37:08Speaker 2: The Big 12 will be the first one to break
- 2:37:11Speaker 2: down the walls.
- 2:37:12Speaker 13: Can we get odds on which conference is going to
- 2:37:14Speaker 13: be first? I'll put it all on the Big 12.
- 2:37:17Speaker 1: You're betting on who allows betting. Exactly.
- 2:37:20Speaker 2: That's really, really meta. All right, stay tuned for The Drive.
- 2:37:23Speaker 2: Thanks for listening to The Sean O'Connell Show. For the
- 2:37:26Speaker 2: next two days, I am out on PFL duty, so
- 2:37:28Speaker 2: we'll be back recapping. Colorado on Monday. It's The Sean
- 2:37:31Speaker 2: O'Connell Show on ESPN 700 at 92.1 FM.
