Transcript
- 0:05Speaker 1: Welcome back to the Richard Sherman Podcast and what a
- 0:08Speaker 1: game we had on Monday night. The San Francisco 49ers
- 0:12Speaker 1: look to be in control of this game in the
- 0:14Speaker 1: first half 20-3 and Jaden Daniel and the Commanders come
- 0:19Speaker 1: back in the second half scoring two touchdowns and made
- 0:23Speaker 1: this a game. Made this a game. Mike Evans goes
- 0:28Speaker 1: out with an apparent Achilles injury that was bothering him
- 0:33Speaker 1: earlier in the week, then the offense just goes stagnant.
- 0:40Speaker 1: The offense just goes stagnant. Christian McCaffrey, 14 carries, 59 yards,
- 0:45Speaker 1: but had a critical fumble in this game. His first
- 0:49Speaker 1: fumble and over 500-something carries, uncharacteristic of him. You know,
- 0:56Speaker 1: it was a great play by Frankie Lou Vu. You
- 1:00Speaker 1: got to give him credit. He caught an angle while
- 1:03Speaker 1: Christian had the ball out, took advantage of it. The
- 1:07Speaker 1: 11 penalties for 88 yards is something that is uncharacteristic
- 1:11Speaker 1: of the San Francisco 49ers and something I know Kyle
- 1:13Speaker 1: Shanahan is going to want to get corrected. They had
- 1:16Speaker 1: four first downs. They gave up four first downs by
- 1:18Speaker 1: penalties and some critical ones late in the game that
- 1:22Speaker 1: wiped away a potential drive-ending sack by Romello Height. And
- 1:28Speaker 1: that was a What was it, an illegal contact? A
- 1:33Speaker 1: play that you just can't have in that game. This
- 1:37Speaker 1: game was a tale of two halves. It looked like
- 1:39Speaker 1: the San Francisco 49ers were the dominant team. We expected
- 1:43Speaker 1: them to be in the first half, and then in
- 1:44Speaker 1: the second half, three straight three and outs to end
- 1:49Speaker 1: the game. Gave the Washington Commanders a chance, but the
- 1:52Speaker 1: defense showed up and showed out. Big stop after big
- 1:56Speaker 1: stop after big stop after giving up a little bit
- 1:58Speaker 1: of yards in this game. Give Jaden Daniels a lot
- 2:02Speaker 1: of credit. He was 29 of 40 for 300 yards,
- 2:08Speaker 1: two touchdowns. He was sacked four times, and everybody got
- 2:11Speaker 1: a piece. Mike L. Williams had a sack. Grayson Haughton
- 2:14Speaker 1: had a sack. Osa Adigizua had a sack. Romello Height
- 2:19Speaker 1: and White, they shared a sack. Romello Height could have
- 2:23Speaker 1: had two sacks in a game, but one of them
- 2:25Speaker 1: was wiped out by illegal contact penalty. But again, Malik.
- 2:30Speaker 1: Malik Mustafa is a guy that keeps showing up. Showed
- 2:34Speaker 1: up in the Seattle Seahawks game. Showed up big time
- 2:37Speaker 1: in this game. And it was great to see. It's
- 2:39Speaker 1: great for this defense. These safeties continue to play really fast.
- 2:43Speaker 1: Renardo Green is playing some good football. The commanders obviously
- 2:50Speaker 1: aren't the best unit. Next week, they get Dre Greenlaw back.
- 2:54Speaker 1: That's going to be a big addition back. Jaden Duggar.
- 2:57Speaker 1: Played well in his day. Played well. You know, made
- 2:59Speaker 1: some plays. A young guy, still learning the position. Very
- 3:03Speaker 1: versatile in this defense. Fred Warner continues to play good football.
- 3:07Speaker 1: Didn't have a ton of big impact plays in this game.
- 3:10Speaker 1: But a great game. A win is a win. And
- 3:13Speaker 1: I'm sure Kyle Shanahan is going to accept that. He's
- 3:16Speaker 1: going to be frustrated with how this offense became so
- 3:18Speaker 1: stagnant in the second half. Only three points in the
- 3:21Speaker 1: second half. What happened? The loss of Mike Evans happened.
- 3:26Speaker 1: Mike Evans was dominant in the first half, and obviously
- 3:29Speaker 1: I've dealt with an Achilles injury, and it's tough. It's tough.
- 3:33Speaker 1: It's frustrating. I don't think his is ruptured, but when
- 3:39Speaker 1: that posterior tib and that Achilles area gets irritated, you
- 3:43Speaker 1: can barely walk. You can't push on. It's a sharp pain.
- 3:46Speaker 1: It just feels like every time you take a step
- 3:49Speaker 1: There's a knife going in and out of your Achilles,
- 3:51Speaker 1: in and out. And that's when it's not ruptured. You're
- 3:54Speaker 1: almost hoping for a rupture at that point because the
- 3:57Speaker 1: pain is so intense on a day in, day out basis.
- 4:00Speaker 1: Sometimes you can get a cortisone shot kind of around
- 4:04Speaker 1: your Achilles because you can't get a cortisone into your
- 4:06Speaker 1: Achilles because it'll start to eat away at the tendon
- 4:09Speaker 1: and that's a guaranteed rupture. So you need to get
- 4:13Speaker 1: the inflammation down. You need to get it to calm down.
- 4:15Speaker 1: And obviously this staff, uh, has a lot of experience
- 4:19Speaker 1: with that because they did a good job of mine.
- 4:22Speaker 1: You know, in 2019, we were able to, to get
- 4:24Speaker 1: it calmed down enough for me to, to have a
- 4:26Speaker 1: great season. And I'm thinking they're going to be able
- 4:28Speaker 1: to get Mike's calm down, but it is one of
- 4:31Speaker 1: those injuries. That's kind of day to day. It's, it's temperamental.
- 4:34Speaker 1: It'll feel good for a couple of days. And then,
- 4:37Speaker 1: you know, you wake up, there's a little inflammation. It's
- 4:39Speaker 1: a very small area behind your ankle. And when it
- 4:43Speaker 1: gets irritated, it shuts down a lot of things. So, uh,
- 4:48Speaker 1: I feel bad for Mike. He was having a fantastic game.
- 4:51Speaker 1: He was setting himself up for a big day. But
- 4:54Speaker 1: you could tell it was bothering him early, and he
- 4:56Speaker 1: was trying to tough it through and soldier it through.
- 4:59Speaker 1: But you're not able to soldier through this injury. You're
- 5:01Speaker 1: not always able to tough out this injury, and that's
- 5:03Speaker 1: the hard part. His Achilles is intact, so that's the
- 5:08Speaker 1: positive thing. We're hoping for a quick recovery from him. Obviously,
- 5:13Speaker 1: this IR list is getting long. I think they're supposed
- 5:18Speaker 1: to be getting some guys, Christian Kirk, potentially back soon.
- 5:23Speaker 1: A couple other guys, Bosa and a number of other
- 5:25Speaker 1: guys that have the potential to return really soon. So
- 5:31Speaker 1: hopefully that helps the reinforcements. But I think Brock Purdy
- 5:36Speaker 1: still had a solid game, 21-29, 264 yards and two touchdowns.
- 5:40Speaker 1: He was sacked twice. He did some cool things with
- 5:43Speaker 1: his legs early in the first half. Got some first
- 5:46Speaker 1: downs with his legs. Kept himself out of harm's way.
- 5:50Speaker 1: But this is a huge win. 6-0. 6-0. In the
- 5:54Speaker 1: National Football League, the number one in the power rankings.
- 5:57Speaker 1: I still think this is the best team in football
- 5:58Speaker 1: right now. The defense continues to get better. When Bosa
- 6:03Speaker 1: comes back, when Dre Greenlaw comes back, when this defense
- 6:07Speaker 1: is 100% in whole, they're going to be a lot
- 6:09Speaker 1: to deal with for teams. They got the Atlanta Falcons
- 6:12Speaker 1: next week. Michael Penix struggled a little bit last game.
- 6:17Speaker 1: He's a little banged up. Will they play him? Will
- 6:20Speaker 1: they play Tua Tunga-Vailoa? We shall see. But John Robinson
- 6:24Speaker 1: is a tough guy to deal with, but I think
- 6:28Speaker 1: this is going to be a good game. Raheem Morris,
- 6:31Speaker 1: revenge game in some ways. We'll see how this defense
- 6:35Speaker 1: performs for him. George Kittle had a really good game
- 6:38Speaker 1: this week. I expect him to have a great game
- 6:39Speaker 1: next week. Let's talk about this Jalen Hurts situation. He's
- 6:45Speaker 1: going on IR for the rest of the season per his,
- 6:48Speaker 1: his representation, his agent and the team and everybody. Well,
- 6:52Speaker 1: there's kind of mixed reports coming out, but it looks
- 6:54Speaker 1: like he's going on IR for the rest of the
- 6:56Speaker 1: season because of this blood caught. It started when he
- 7:00Speaker 1: got kicked in his calf. Then it seemed like it
- 7:02Speaker 1: moved up. You know, I think there's some ambiguity about
- 7:07Speaker 1: who knew first and when did they know? And if
- 7:09Speaker 1: he was informed and if he was educated and, Did
- 7:13Speaker 1: they let him go play knowing it and not educating him?
- 7:16Speaker 1: Or did he know? Or should they have stopped him
- 7:18Speaker 1: from playing? Look, these are grown men. I really, I
- 7:26Speaker 1: think I could understand people's outrage with the training staff
- 7:31Speaker 1: if these were kids. If this was high school, even college,
- 7:35Speaker 1: you know, these are kids. They got to make, you know,
- 7:38Speaker 1: they're being influenced and pushed to make decisions from the team.
- 7:43Speaker 1: And they can't do side for themselves and they feel
- 7:45Speaker 1: pressured to play because their own scholarship, et cetera, et cetera. Yes,
- 7:51Speaker 1: be outraged because that's wrong. But in this situation, I'm
- 7:55Speaker 1: not sure that's what happened. From what I understand, and
- 7:59Speaker 1: I've talked to many insiders and people that are around
- 8:02Speaker 1: the situation about it, they told him what was going on.
- 8:06Speaker 1: He was informed. They had already done the imaging on it.
- 8:10Speaker 1: He knew what it was. They explained it. and he
- 8:13Speaker 1: wanted to play. I think that happens sometimes. He's a pro.
- 8:17Speaker 1: He's a professional. These are professionals. Guys play with things
- 8:21Speaker 1: all the time, and doctors tell them, hey, you could
- 8:25Speaker 1: do something to make this a lot worse, and these
- 8:29Speaker 1: are the ways you can make it worse, and guys say, okay,
- 8:33Speaker 1: I hear you. Like, give me my pads, give me
- 8:36Speaker 1: my helmet, and I'm going to go out there and play.
- 8:38Speaker 1: Is that the right decision? Is that the wrong decision?
- 8:41Speaker 1: That's up to that guy, but I think For people
- 8:44Speaker 1: thinking somebody forced Jalen Hurts to do this, I don't
- 8:50Speaker 1: think that's the case. I think Jalen Hurts is an
- 8:53Speaker 1: incredibly tough player, a smart player, a smart person. I
- 8:58Speaker 1: think he understood the risks and he was willing to
- 9:02Speaker 1: take the risks. And he wanted to help his team win.
- 9:05Speaker 1: And that speaks to the toughness of Jalen Hurts, the
- 9:08Speaker 1: teammate that Jalen Hurts is, the guy and everything. He
- 9:12Speaker 1: was willing to risk it all. For his team. And
- 9:14Speaker 1: I think. Philadelphia Eagles fans. Philadelphia Eagles. The National Football League.
- 9:18Speaker 1: All the fans. Can appreciate that. About him. Now. Would
- 9:22Speaker 1: we want. Jalen Hurts going out there. Risking his life.
- 9:25Speaker 1: In this way. No. I don't think. I don't think.
- 9:27Speaker 1: We would think it's worth it. I think that's what.
- 9:29Speaker 1: People were outraged. About. Because they. Like man. Why. If
- 9:32Speaker 1: it could have got this bad. Why didn't they tell him.
- 9:34Speaker 1: Or why didn't they. You have to understand. That. Sometimes
- 9:38Speaker 1: football players. Like. The thing. That makes us. that makes
- 9:45Speaker 1: this game special and that makes us special is, is
- 9:48Speaker 1: our ability to say, to put our body in harm's
- 9:51Speaker 1: way and to be willing to sacrifice for the guy
- 9:54Speaker 1: next to us. And obviously this isn't war. This isn't
- 9:58Speaker 1: life or death. This isn't anything. And I don't, ever
- 10:00Speaker 1: like to compare it to soldiers or anything like that,
- 10:02Speaker 1: but there are some similarities about, Hey, you know, you're
- 10:06Speaker 1: in a foxhole with a guy like you got to
- 10:08Speaker 1: be willing to put it on the line for that guy.
- 10:10Speaker 1: If you really, if you're really that caliber of guy
- 10:12Speaker 1: and that's what he's saying, he is now I'm, I'm,
- 10:16Speaker 1: I'm hoping that, you know, they're saying the blood clot
- 10:18Speaker 1: moved to his lungs and it's a very dangerous touch
- 10:21Speaker 1: and go situation. And we're hoping Jalen Hurts makes it
- 10:24Speaker 1: through and these blood thinners work and everything works out fine.
- 10:28Speaker 1: You know, regardless of football, you just want the human
- 10:30Speaker 1: being to be fine. But I think sometimes the outside
- 10:35Speaker 1: world gets, you know, it's like everybody wants to be
- 10:38Speaker 1: outraged about everything. And I'm not sure I agree with that.
- 10:42Speaker 1: I think sometimes in a situation people can be educated
- 10:46Speaker 1: and make the decision that they think is right. And
- 10:49Speaker 1: I'm sure one day we'll hear from Jalen hurts and
- 10:53Speaker 1: on whether he was educated and whether he knew or, or,
- 10:56Speaker 1: or what the case, what, what went into his decision making.
- 10:59Speaker 1: But from what I hear, you know, this guy just
- 11:02Speaker 1: made a decision because he wanted to help his team win.
- 11:05Speaker 1: And I, I got a ton of respect for him
- 11:11Speaker 1: for doing that. Um, And is there something that should
- 11:18Speaker 1: be said to a staff where they say, hey, we
- 11:20Speaker 1: should hold guys out and we should be able to
- 11:22Speaker 1: stop guys from themselves? And I think you'd be– in sports,
- 11:30Speaker 1: you would miss some of the greatest moments and greatest, like,
- 11:34Speaker 1: stories and greatest– Special moments that have happened in the
- 11:41Speaker 1: history of these games, if the doctor said, hey, you're done.
- 11:46Speaker 1: In every situation, a guy could seriously harm himself further
- 11:50Speaker 1: playing in the game. And I think that's just the
- 11:54Speaker 1: nature of this beast. Situations like this happen, and you're
- 11:59Speaker 1: happy that he's going to be okay and that he
- 12:01Speaker 1: can work through this. The doctors cleared him to play.
- 12:07Speaker 1: as best you can clear somebody to play. Now, if
- 12:11Speaker 1: they don't clear him to play, then what's the conversation?
- 12:15Speaker 1: You know, I think there's so many different ways you
- 12:17Speaker 1: could go and so many different speculations, so many different
- 12:19Speaker 1: avenues you can go about this. I think this is
- 12:21Speaker 1: a situation where, you know, you're thankful that he made
- 12:25Speaker 1: it through fine and that he's healthy and that nothing
- 12:29Speaker 1: truly tragic happened in that moment, in that long trip
- 12:33Speaker 1: from London. But, I don't think this is a situation
- 12:36Speaker 1: they've kind of pushed him out there and they pushed
- 12:39Speaker 1: him into harm's way and he was uneducated and uninformed
- 12:42Speaker 1: and he just didn't know what was going on. I
- 12:44Speaker 1: think this might be a situation where a guy is
- 12:47Speaker 1: a football player and he's a tough football player who says, hey,
- 12:50Speaker 1: I hear what you're saying. I'm going to go give
- 12:52Speaker 1: it a shot. And that's what it is, whether you
- 12:56Speaker 1: agree or not. You know, it says a lot about
- 12:59Speaker 1: the football player that he is. I respect it. I
- 13:02Speaker 1: respect the decision. I would have respected the decision if
- 13:05Speaker 1: he didn't play. Players make decisions. Players get separate opinions,
- 13:14Speaker 1: second opinions, and do what's best for them. They're expecting
- 13:19Speaker 1: a full recovery from Jalen Hurts, and I hope he does.
- 13:21Speaker 1: But this is one of those unique situations about the
- 13:24Speaker 1: National Football League. But as always... This was an incredible
- 13:27Speaker 1: Monday night game. I appreciate you guys joining me. You
- 13:30Speaker 1: could be anywhere in the world, but you're here with me. Congratulations,
- 13:33Speaker 1: Niners faithful, on a huge win, 6-0. I know they're
- 13:36Speaker 1: feeling good about this team. Kyle Shanahan, enjoy your victory Tuesday,
- 13:41Speaker 1: I guess it is, and we'll see you next time.
