- 0:01A devotee residing at tree or a window ashram some years ago
- 0:05tried an experiment which he reported for a specific time
- 0:10period. He determined not to speak.
- 0:13He did not do this in an indiscriminate way, however.
- 0:18He implemented this experiment by avoiding all social speech
- 0:21whatsoever, but agreed to speak as necessary for the work role
- 0:26he had been assigned. He carried a pad of paper and
- 0:30pen with him to let those who addressed him know about the
- 0:33discipline he was undertaking. During that time, he reported
- 0:38that he was able to observe the impulse to speech and that it
- 0:43arose spontaneously without any serious thought process or
- 0:47planning involved, seemingly as a responsive vibration to the
- 0:52vibrations he was receiving. Additionally, he noted that he
- 0:57was able to remain inwardly concentrated for longer periods
- 1:02and his attention did not get dispersed as easily as when he
- 1:06engaged in everyday random social interactions.
- 1:11There is a rationale, based in experience, as to why yogis,
- 1:16religious aspirants and spiritual seekers have
- 1:20traditionally resorted to spending periods of time,
- 1:24sometimes extended periods of time, alone or in very small
- 1:29groups in the forest, the mountains or the deserts.
- 1:34While mental and vital vibrations travel all over the
- 1:37world, the intensity and the confused garble of those
- 1:41vibrations in a dense urban environment is considerably
- 1:46higher than in less populated and remote regions, thus
- 1:51allowing the seeker to focus more easily and observe the
- 1:55thoughts and feelings more clearly.
- 1:59While this is not a panacea for spiritual realization, it is
- 2:04clear that at times it has been a useful process, particularly
- 2:09early in the development process.
- 2:11While the power of inward concentration and observation is
- 2:15still in its infancy, sensitive individuals frequently note a
- 2:21sense of discomfort when they are in crowded circumstances,
- 2:25specifically because the thoughts and feelings pile in
- 2:28upon them with an immediacy and power that they find hard to
- 2:32manage. While it is not essential to
- 2:36isolate oneself entirely from social interaction in order to
- 2:40progress spiritually, there is no doubt that for many there can
- 2:45be an advantage for some period of time if the isolation is
- 2:50utilized as an opportunity to follow this internalizing
- 2:54process and is not turned into an avoidance of the larger issue
- 2:59of how to maintain the poise in the midst of all the calls of
- 3:04life. The mother notes quote.
- 3:09To be individualized in a collectivity, one must be
- 3:13absolutely conscious of oneself and of which self, the self
- 3:20which is above all intermixture. That is what I call the truth of
- 3:24your being. And as long as you are not
- 3:27conscious of the truth of your being, you are moved by all
- 3:32kinds of things without taking any note of it at all.
- 3:37Collective thought, collective suggestions are a formidable
- 3:41influence which act constantly on individual thought.
- 3:46And what is extraordinary is that one does not notice it.
- 3:50One believes that one thinks like that, but in truth it is
- 3:54the collectivity which thinks like that.
- 3:57The mass is always inferior to the individual.
- 4:01Take individuals with similar qualities of similar categories.
- 4:06Well, when they are alone, these individuals are at least 2°
- 4:11better than people of the same category.
- 4:13In a crowd there is a mixture of obscurities, a mixture of
- 4:18unconsciousness, and inevitably you slip into this
- 4:22unconsciousness. To escape this, there is but one
- 4:26means to become conscious of oneself, more and more conscious
- 4:32and more and more attentive. Try this little exercise at the
- 4:37beginning of the day. Say I won't speak without
- 4:41thinking of what I say. You believe, don't you, that you
- 4:44think all that you say It is not at all true.
- 4:48You will see that so many times the word you do not want to say
- 4:52is ready to come out, and that you are compelled to make a
- 4:55conscious effort to stop it from coming out.
- 5:00I have known people who were very scrupulous about not
- 5:03telling lies, but all of a sudden went together in a group.
- 5:08Instead of speaking the truth, they would spontaneously tell a
- 5:13lie. They did not have the intention
- 5:16of doing so. They did not think of it a
- 5:18minute before doing it, but it came like that.
- 5:23Why? Because they were in the company
- 5:26of liars. There was an atmosphere of
- 5:28falsehood, and they had quite simply caught the malady.
- 5:33It is thus that gradually, slowly, with perseverance, first
- 5:40of all with great care and much attention, one becomes
- 5:43conscious, learns to know oneself, and then to become
- 5:49master of oneself. End Quote Reference.
