- 12:49:10Welcome to the City Center
- 12:49:11Podcast. I'm Jerry Marcello.
- 12:49:14There's no denying that West Palm Beach
- 12:49:16is a city on the move.
- 12:49:18But with every new development comes
- 12:49:19concerns about traffic and congestion.
- 12:49:22How does a city on the move keep moving
- 12:49:24when getting around
- 12:49:25becomes a real challenge?
- 12:49:27West Palm Beach is hard at work
- 12:49:28developing a
- 12:49:29transportation and mobility plan
- 12:49:31that will hopefully keep things moving
- 12:49:32for decades to come.
- 12:49:34We'll take a look. That's next on the
- 12:49:36City Center Podcast from West Palm Beach.
- 12:49:40[Music]
- 12:49:44Joining us today is Jessica Keller,
- 12:49:46Parking and Mobility Administrator for
- 12:49:47the City of West Palm Beach.
- 12:49:49Jessica, welcome.
- 12:49:50Thank you.
- 12:49:51You know, traffic is obviously a problem
- 12:49:53anywhere you'll go in South Florida, the
- 12:49:55state, the whole country.
- 12:49:57Traffic is an issue everywhere.
- 12:49:59Obviously, the City of West
- 12:50:00Palm Beach is stepping up.
- 12:50:02They're wanting to make some changes.
- 12:50:04What exactly do you do and
- 12:50:06how do we go forward from here?
- 12:50:08Well, I've been with the
- 12:50:09city for two and a half years.
- 12:50:11And when I initially joined the city, I
- 12:50:13interviewed for the position of
- 12:50:15transportation and mobility manager.
- 12:50:18And my interview was, I
- 12:50:20like to tell this story.
- 12:50:22When I walked into the interview, I had
- 12:50:24traveled here from Miami
- 12:50:26where I live part time.
- 12:50:29And I was a few moments late and I opened
- 12:50:33with, "Hi, I'm Jessica Keller.
- 12:50:37And I'm here to help
- 12:50:38you not become Miami."
- 12:50:40And I meant that in the
- 12:50:41context of congestion.
- 12:50:44And here in the City of West Palm Beach,
- 12:50:47this is an amazing
- 12:50:48opportunity to get ahead of it,
- 12:50:51as opposed to places
- 12:50:52further south who are catching up.
- 12:50:55I hear you. And actually,
- 12:50:56that's really, really smart.
- 12:50:57I've been in other cities where their own
- 12:51:01growth, their own success
- 12:51:02seems to be their poison.
- 12:51:05They're not planning for the future and
- 12:51:08the future comes and they're not ready.
- 12:51:10And what you're saying is that West Palm
- 12:51:11Beach is trying to
- 12:51:12avoid that exact situation.
- 12:51:14Yes. And recently, you introduced me as
- 12:51:19the city's parking and
- 12:51:21mobility administrator.
- 12:51:23So I was recently promoted and that is a
- 12:51:26reflection of the city recognizing the
- 12:51:29connection between
- 12:51:30parking and transportation.
- 12:51:34It's something that
- 12:51:35everyone thinks about.
- 12:51:37Ideally, what we want to have happen here
- 12:51:41in the city is that you park one time and
- 12:51:44you forget about it.
- 12:51:45And you have the ability to choose
- 12:51:47multiple transportation options to get to
- 12:51:49the places that you want to go,
- 12:51:50particularly downtown.
- 12:51:52Gotcha. So are you thinking of people who
- 12:51:54are driving into town and parking or are
- 12:51:57we talking about folks who live here in
- 12:51:59town just leaving their cars at home?
- 12:52:01Well, it's both. We're
- 12:52:04thinking about how we address both.
- 12:52:07We have the commuters who are coming into
- 12:52:09town, people who are visiting because,
- 12:52:12was it 10, 15 years ago,
- 12:52:15we were a growing core.
- 12:52:19And now we are a national destination.
- 12:52:23And so, you know, my role and the whole
- 12:52:26team that works with me, our role is to
- 12:52:28be able to move people
- 12:52:30around with ease in the city.
- 12:52:33OK, moving people around with
- 12:52:35ease in the city specifically.
- 12:52:38How do you accomplish that?
- 12:52:40Well, we have to build the infrastructure
- 12:52:43which we are actively doing.
- 12:52:46And we also have to have transportation
- 12:52:48system that is beyond the infrastructure.
- 12:52:52And I'm going to want to talk about the
- 12:52:54ride WPB program over the
- 12:52:58past two and a half years.
- 12:52:59We've had a stopgap program.
- 12:53:01I think a lot of people remember the
- 12:53:03trolley that was here forever
- 12:53:06and people loved the trolley.
- 12:53:08The data didn't support that love. The
- 12:53:11ridership was very
- 12:53:12low, leading up to covid.
- 12:53:15And then the city put in place a stopgap
- 12:53:19program, which has
- 12:53:20been branded as Ride WPB.
- 12:53:23And that transportation system, which is
- 12:53:26temporary, is available and accessible
- 12:53:29primarily to the people downtown.
- 12:53:32But we're going to be expanding it. Let's
- 12:53:34talk a little bit about the specific
- 12:53:35features of of Ride West Palm Beach.
- 12:53:39What exactly can is there buses or are
- 12:53:41there cars? What are we talking about?
- 12:53:43Well, currently people use an app and
- 12:53:46they can get on demand service door to
- 12:53:50door service for a small fee
- 12:53:54depending on where you're going.
- 12:53:56There's also a fixed route that just
- 12:53:58circulates in downtown.
- 12:54:01The reach isn't quite as expansive as we
- 12:54:04want, but we collected a lot of data that
- 12:54:06helped inform what where we're going in
- 12:54:08the future to have greater
- 12:54:10coverage across the city.
- 12:54:11OK, so what the experiences that you're
- 12:54:14gathering now and the data you're
- 12:54:16gathering now will help you with your
- 12:54:18plans for the future.
- 12:54:19Absolutely. And they have informed us
- 12:54:21where we're going in the future.
- 12:54:23So I can talk a little
- 12:54:24bit about that as well.
- 12:54:26So within the next year, within the next
- 12:54:2912 months, we will be
- 12:54:31launching a new program.
- 12:54:33It will be our permanent program. And
- 12:54:36that will provide coverage to almost
- 12:54:39100000 people that live in
- 12:54:42the city and work in the city.
- 12:54:44It will be composed of fixed route
- 12:54:46transit. There'll be flashy vehicles
- 12:54:49branded for West Palm Beach and it will
- 12:54:52also include on demand systems.
- 12:54:56And some of the feedback that we got from
- 12:54:58the community is that they had to wait
- 12:55:00too long for on demand service.
- 12:55:02Well, the new program is going to give
- 12:55:05our users less than 15 minute wait times
- 12:55:08for on demand, but fixed route service
- 12:55:11will be less than eight minutes.
- 12:55:14And what that means is that if you go to
- 12:55:17your transit stop, you're not going to
- 12:55:19wait any longer than eight minutes for a
- 12:55:22fixed route vehicle to swing by and pick
- 12:55:25you up and take you
- 12:55:27further along your destination.
- 12:55:29And that is unparalleled anywhere.
- 12:55:34And the goal of the ride WPB program
- 12:55:37primary objective is
- 12:55:39to reduce congestion.
- 12:55:41And the best way that we can do that is
- 12:55:44provide reliable, frequent service.
- 12:55:47Right. So help me understand
- 12:55:49fixed route transportation.
- 12:55:53Is that a bus or what form does it take?
- 12:55:57Well, you won't see your traditional bus
- 12:56:00on West Palm Beach streets.
- 12:56:03We recognize there's a certain stigma
- 12:56:05attached to what the
- 12:56:07traditional bus looks like.
- 12:56:09So we're looking for
- 12:56:10something flashy and new.
- 12:56:14I'm really excited about it because we
- 12:56:17want people to be curious and they're not
- 12:56:21necessarily curious
- 12:56:22about a traditional bus,
- 12:56:23but they are curious about something that
- 12:56:26looks different, maybe something that
- 12:56:29they may see in a different country.
- 12:56:33I hear lots of stories about how the
- 12:56:35transportation system is so much better.
- 12:56:37Other places. And we look to those places
- 12:56:39to help inform where we want to go.
- 12:56:42Did you actually look at the systems that
- 12:56:44are, say, in Europe or in other parts of
- 12:56:46the world to sort of get ideas?
- 12:56:48I didn't have the luxury of going, but I
- 12:56:52certainly did the research.
- 12:56:55So tell me a little bit more about on
- 12:56:57demand. How would that work?
- 12:56:59It sounds a little bit like ride sharing
- 12:57:02to a degree, but it's not.
- 12:57:04Yeah. So the new system will be one where
- 12:57:08we have an app course and you are able to
- 12:57:14possibly schedule the time
- 12:57:17you want to be picked up.
- 12:57:19And we also have the
- 12:57:21ability for people to call in.
- 12:57:23That is something else that we heard from
- 12:57:24customers of our stop stopgap program is
- 12:57:29that they wanted the
- 12:57:29ability to be able to call in,
- 12:57:31particularly older customers that wanted
- 12:57:34to be able to call by phone.
- 12:57:36Sure, sure. So you all these current
- 12:57:41temporary programs are designed to help
- 12:57:44you gather information.
- 12:57:46Were there other ways that you reached
- 12:57:48out to the community to find out what
- 12:57:50they needed and what they wanted?
- 12:57:52Yes. When I first got here, I visited a
- 12:57:56number of downtown condos going to our
- 12:58:01customers as opposed to asking the
- 12:58:03customers to come to us.
- 12:58:05So I visited them in their homes. I
- 12:58:08visited them at school.
- 12:58:10We held a number of community engagement
- 12:58:14meetings across the city
- 12:58:15and it was very well attended.
- 12:58:19And I have somewhat created a following,
- 12:58:24if you will, of people who are truly
- 12:58:26interested in transportation.
- 12:58:30And those people that I met on the road
- 12:58:33have been constantly
- 12:58:36providing us feedback.
- 12:58:38When I would find a vehicle that was
- 12:58:41interesting that we might service in the
- 12:58:44permanent program, I would run it by
- 12:58:46those people who have engaged with me,
- 12:58:49because we really legitimately do care
- 12:58:52what people think and what might make
- 12:58:56more people ride a transportation system.
- 12:58:59Gotcha. Obviously, a lot of people come
- 12:59:01into the city from outside, from outside
- 12:59:03communities coming into
- 12:59:04West Palm Beach to go to work.
- 12:59:06Is that a large issue, a large factor in
- 12:59:10the issue of congestion in the city or is
- 12:59:12it something that you're
- 12:59:13not too concerned about?
- 12:59:15We are concerned about it. Our primary
- 12:59:17focus was initially on the downtown.
- 12:59:20Downtown, right.
- 12:59:21And we have since expanded. We are
- 12:59:24currently developing a citywide mobility
- 12:59:26plan. We finished the
- 12:59:27downtown mobility plan.
- 12:59:30The commission adopted it and we've now
- 12:59:32expanded out to the citywide.
- 12:59:34And this past August, we held a community
- 12:59:36engagement meeting for people to provide
- 12:59:39input to what that
- 12:59:40citywide mobility plan is.
- 12:59:44And then, of course, we also have to
- 12:59:46think outside of our borders.
- 12:59:48And one of the things that's pretty
- 12:59:50exciting to me is this renewed
- 12:59:54relationship with the county.
- 12:59:56The county's transportation goals are
- 13:00:00very much aligned with the city of West
- 13:00:02Palm Beach and they
- 13:00:04weren't always that way.
- 13:00:06And so it's really exciting to know that
- 13:00:08we're going to be working directly with
- 13:00:10the county to address our transportation
- 13:00:13and congestion issues.
- 13:00:15So in the what sort of relationship do we
- 13:00:19have with the county?
- 13:00:20Are we going to be working on locations
- 13:00:23or transportation modes?
- 13:00:25What sort of what sort of a partnership
- 13:00:27do we have with them?
- 13:00:28Well, recently we entered into an MOU, a
- 13:00:33memorandum of understanding.
- 13:00:35I'm glad you said that.
- 13:00:37And in that MOU, the county identified
- 13:00:41projects in their right of
- 13:00:42way to increase capacity.
- 13:00:45And the city identified
- 13:00:47projects on our right of way.
- 13:00:51And jointly, we are collecting a mobility
- 13:00:55fee from developments that come into the
- 13:00:59city of West Palm Beach.
- 13:01:01And then we use that funding to build the
- 13:01:07infrastructure that's
- 13:01:07identified in the mobility plan.
- 13:01:10You know, you touched on something that
- 13:01:11it may be a little bit out of the scope
- 13:01:13of our conversation, but I
- 13:01:14think it's worth mentioning.
- 13:01:16You mentioned that certain roads are the
- 13:01:18responsibility of the county and other
- 13:01:20roads are responsibility of the city.
- 13:01:23How often do you have someone who comes
- 13:01:24to you to make a comment or suggestion
- 13:01:27about a section of roadway
- 13:01:29that we have no control over?
- 13:01:31It happens pretty frequently.
- 13:01:33And it's that renewed relationship with
- 13:01:37the county that gives me a lot of hope
- 13:01:39that we'll be able to find solutions that
- 13:01:42make the people that use our roadways or
- 13:01:45live along county roadways.
- 13:01:48It gives me renewed hope that we are
- 13:01:50going to find solutions to make the
- 13:01:51communities more livable.
- 13:01:53Gotcha. Gotcha.
- 13:01:55So we've covered a lot of ground here.
- 13:01:57Now, we've talked about the immediate
- 13:02:00need to make some changes to make
- 13:02:03improvements and your hard work at that.
- 13:02:06Looking beyond just the next year or two
- 13:02:10years, I mean, what do we think will be
- 13:02:13the problems of transportation, say, in
- 13:02:16another five or six years here in here in
- 13:02:18here in West Palm Beach?
- 13:02:21That's a really interesting question
- 13:02:22because I'm very optimistic about where
- 13:02:25we're going to be in five or six years.
- 13:02:28If I was working someplace else, I
- 13:02:30wouldn't be as optimistic as I am.
- 13:02:33I think that our traffic and congestion
- 13:02:38concerns are going to be
- 13:02:41reduced in five or six years.
- 13:02:43And the reason I believe that is because
- 13:02:46of the amount of effort that the city and
- 13:02:50our partners, the county, even private
- 13:02:54entities are putting into building out
- 13:02:57the infrastructure and transportation
- 13:02:59programs ahead of the development.
- 13:03:04I think that we're going to be in a
- 13:03:05position where we're
- 13:03:06not quite as worried.
- 13:03:09And again, you hit on a very important
- 13:03:11theme, I think, as part of what you're
- 13:03:12working towards is getting ahead of the
- 13:03:15situation, putting in the infrastructure,
- 13:03:17putting the systems in place before a
- 13:03:20problem actually occurs.
- 13:03:22Yes. You mentioned something important.
- 13:03:24You mentioned working with partnerships
- 13:03:26with both the county and other government
- 13:03:28agencies, but also mentioned private
- 13:03:31agencies, private entities.
- 13:03:34How can local business take part in this
- 13:03:37and help improve the situation?
- 13:03:39Well, they can always
- 13:03:40reach out to me, of course.
- 13:03:42But the city is part of
- 13:03:44the Mobility Coalition.
- 13:03:45And the Mobility Coalition is where it's
- 13:03:49literally a huge table.
- 13:03:52Thirty people sit around it once a month
- 13:03:55and we all have a mutual interest in
- 13:03:58addressing congestion in
- 13:04:01the city of West Palm Beach.
- 13:04:04And that coalition is unlike anything
- 13:04:08that I have
- 13:04:09participated in my entire career.
- 13:04:11I've been doing this for almost 30 years.
- 13:04:13And the effort and interest and
- 13:04:18commitment of everyone who sits around
- 13:04:20that table to address the potential
- 13:04:26transportation issues that would occur if
- 13:04:31we didn't address them now, it's amazing.
- 13:04:35And I would really encourage for the
- 13:04:39private community to look into
- 13:04:41WPDGO, the Mobility Coalition.
- 13:04:44All right. So this is
- 13:04:45all very fascinating.
- 13:04:47I will assume that most likely the
- 13:04:48information that people would like to
- 13:04:50learn about this program is going to be
- 13:04:52available at the city website at wpb.org.
- 13:04:55Is that correct?
- 13:04:56Yes.
- 13:04:57OK, very good. So go there.
- 13:04:59You'll find the information.
- 13:05:01My guess is you probably want to search
- 13:05:02on transportation or mobility and poof,
- 13:05:05it'll all pop up for you right there.
- 13:05:07That's correct. And we
- 13:05:08try to keep it up to date.
- 13:05:10I also pride myself into being responsive
- 13:05:14and accessible to
- 13:05:15residents, the business community.
- 13:05:19And so people are always
- 13:05:21encouraged to reach out to me.
- 13:05:23And I may not always provide the answer
- 13:05:28that they want to hear.
- 13:05:30But I am certainly willing to listen and
- 13:05:34take some of the best ideas addressing
- 13:05:36traffic and congestion
- 13:05:37have come from the community.
- 13:05:39Because who doesn't know better than the
- 13:05:42people who live on those streets and work
- 13:05:44on those streets, what the problems are?
- 13:05:46And some of the and some of those
- 13:05:47solutions to address
- 13:05:49those problems come from them.
- 13:05:51Here's an opportunity that that I think
- 13:05:53will be really valuable.
- 13:05:55You have a mic, you have an opportunity
- 13:05:56to send a message to the folks who live
- 13:05:58here in West Palm Beach.
- 13:06:00About what you do and about the
- 13:06:03challenges and also solutions
- 13:06:04that we've talked about today.
- 13:06:06What would be a message you would like to
- 13:06:08really share with the folks at home?
- 13:06:10Well, I would really
- 13:06:11like them to be engaged.
- 13:06:12I would really I want them to come out
- 13:06:16when we launch our ride
- 13:06:18WPB program, the relaunch,
- 13:06:21because that is going to be an exciting
- 13:06:23moment for the city to have that
- 13:06:27opportunity to have access to a
- 13:06:30transportation system
- 13:06:31that is world class.
- 13:06:32And I don't say the word.
- 13:06:34I really mean world class.
- 13:06:35I don't say that lightly.
- 13:06:37I encourage people to
- 13:06:38stay engaged and reach out.
- 13:06:42Stay tuned, of course.
- 13:06:44There's so much more to come there.
- 13:06:47We're going to be rolling out the updated
- 13:06:50bicycle master plan.
- 13:06:51You had asked earlier about how we're
- 13:06:54addressing things across the city.
- 13:06:56I didn't get a chance to talk about the
- 13:06:58updated bicycle master plan.
- 13:07:00Tell me about it.
- 13:07:01We're getting ready to
- 13:07:02bring it to commission.
- 13:07:04Hopefully sometime in January, we have a
- 13:07:06lot of things happening in January and it
- 13:07:10addresses the entire city.
- 13:07:13But the objective is
- 13:07:14a low stress network.
- 13:07:17What does that mean?
- 13:07:18What a low stress network means is if you
- 13:07:21think about when you're walking down a
- 13:07:24busy street, let's let's think about
- 13:07:26walking down Okeechobee.
- 13:07:30How would you feel?
- 13:07:32I would be stressed.
- 13:07:34I think it's Okeechobee, but
- 13:07:37yeah, I'd be a little stressed.
- 13:07:38OK, so we want to create an environment
- 13:07:41so that when you ride
- 13:07:43your bike on Okeechobee,
- 13:07:46it would be a low stress experience.
- 13:07:49And that's possible.
- 13:07:51That's possible through good design.
- 13:07:53And that is what we are looking to do
- 13:07:57through this update.
- 13:07:58It will be funded through the mobility
- 13:08:00fee that I talked about earlier.
- 13:08:03So it's not just a pipe dream.
- 13:08:05These are real things that are actually
- 13:08:06happening so that you can choose to ride
- 13:08:09your bike to go downtown.
- 13:08:12And it's not going to be a stressful
- 13:08:14situation unless you're trying to avoid a
- 13:08:16rainstorm in the summer.
- 13:08:18Right. And actually, it's interesting
- 13:08:20transformation because you say ride a
- 13:08:23bike and people automatically jump to it
- 13:08:25being just a recreation.
- 13:08:28What you're describing is turning a
- 13:08:30bicycle into a
- 13:08:31legitimate form of transportation.
- 13:08:33I need to go to the store or
- 13:08:35I need to pop over to work.
- 13:08:37And it's possible if the roads are safe
- 13:08:39in this and it creates a low stress
- 13:08:40situation for the rider.
- 13:08:42You know, Jerry, what is really
- 13:08:43interesting about West Palm Beach, which
- 13:08:45really surprised me when
- 13:08:46we looked into the data,
- 13:08:48is that the primary use of a bicycle in
- 13:08:51the city is for commuting.
- 13:08:52It's already happening, but it's a low
- 13:08:55number of people who are commuting and we
- 13:08:58want to see more people
- 13:08:59be able to do that safely.
- 13:09:01So how about that? That's an incorrect
- 13:09:03assumption on my part.
- 13:09:04So it is being used for transportation
- 13:09:06city, but the goal is to increase those
- 13:09:09numbers as we go forward.
- 13:09:11Well, the goal is to reduce congestion.
- 13:09:13So however people choose to if they
- 13:09:16choose to ride a bike, if they choose to
- 13:09:19use our transportation
- 13:09:19system, if they choose to walk,
- 13:09:22we are building more sidewalks, we're
- 13:09:24installing more trees so that it makes
- 13:09:27that experience much more pleasurable.
- 13:09:30You see, part of what you what you work
- 13:09:33with is obviously parking.
- 13:09:36Parking is also another point of
- 13:09:38contention for some people about the
- 13:09:40availability of parking,
- 13:09:41especially on very high
- 13:09:42traffic days or on events downtown.
- 13:09:47How will we be dealing
- 13:09:48with that in the future?
- 13:09:51Well, everyone wants to park directly in
- 13:09:53front of the restaurant or the
- 13:09:55store that they want to go to.
- 13:09:58And the reality of that is that we can't
- 13:10:03all do that at the same time.
- 13:10:06So in my dream world is that we have just
- 13:10:11the right amount of
- 13:10:12capacity in our parking garages.
- 13:10:17And we would be able to go to the parking
- 13:10:19garage and pay for our parking.
- 13:10:21And then through that same app, we'd be
- 13:10:26able to pay to use the
- 13:10:31transportation system.
- 13:10:33We would be able to use
- 13:10:35one of the bright bikes.
- 13:10:37We'd be able to use
- 13:10:38various modes through one system.
- 13:10:41So it would be like a menu. Sure.
- 13:10:43So the idea of having multiple forms of
- 13:10:48transportation really sort of folds into
- 13:10:50the concept that you
- 13:10:51can park your car here.
- 13:10:52But then to get to where you're going,
- 13:10:54you could use one of the modes of
- 13:10:56transportation we have
- 13:10:57available sort of all mixes together.
- 13:10:59Yes, I assure you that riding your bike
- 13:11:03is way more fun than sitting alone in
- 13:11:07your car in traffic.
- 13:11:09You will feel so much better than when
- 13:11:13you're sitting on, I
- 13:11:15hate to pick on Okachobi.
- 13:11:17Sure. But Okachobi. We love
- 13:11:19Okachobi. You guys are great.
- 13:11:22I assure you, you will feel much better
- 13:11:25riding your bike than you
- 13:11:28will sitting in traffic alone.
- 13:11:31Fantastic. So we covered a lot of ground
- 13:11:33here. Obviously, there's a lot going on.
- 13:11:36There's a lot of plans,
- 13:11:38both temporary and long term, that are
- 13:11:40coming together to get ahead of
- 13:11:42congestion, to get ahead of the problems
- 13:11:45that other cities are seeing.
- 13:11:47So that doesn't happen here in West Palm
- 13:11:49Beach. One of the things people see as a
- 13:11:51barrier of transportation
- 13:11:52is that they don't feel safe.
- 13:11:55And it's no secret. Maybe not everyone is
- 13:11:59aware, but Florida is one of the least
- 13:12:02safe places to ride your
- 13:12:04bike or to walk in the country.
- 13:12:08And the city is also developing a safe
- 13:12:10streets for all action plan.
- 13:12:13So what that is doing is it's addressing
- 13:12:16the locations that have
- 13:12:19the highest rates of crashes.
- 13:12:22And we're going to make safety
- 13:12:23improvements in those locations to
- 13:12:26address the danger that is there.
- 13:12:31The other thing is the other side effect
- 13:12:34of addressing those safety problems is
- 13:12:37frequent crashes
- 13:12:38cause frequent congestion.
- 13:12:41So they're tied together. So are you
- 13:12:44saying that we're thinking that a lot of
- 13:12:47the problems that we're seeing with these
- 13:12:48high conflict areas, these high these
- 13:12:51high accident areas, is it's more it's
- 13:12:54design than, say, poor driving?
- 13:12:59That's a tricky question. It's a
- 13:13:01combination. So we know we have a
- 13:13:04distracted driving problem.
- 13:13:06I moved here from the state of Maryland
- 13:13:0813 years ago and we had
- 13:13:11hands free driving then.
- 13:13:14So when I moved here, I went back in time
- 13:13:20because everyone was using their phone.
- 13:13:23So we have a distracted driving problem,
- 13:13:26but we also have a design problem.
- 13:13:29And the city of West Palm Beach has
- 13:13:32absolutely been a leader.
- 13:13:34I have to give all the credit in the
- 13:13:35world to my predecessors to getting the
- 13:13:39ball rolling of designing safe streets.
- 13:13:43We when you walk down Klamadis, you don't
- 13:13:48have a fear of being hit by a driver
- 13:13:51because people are moving slowly.
- 13:13:55You have nice surroundings. And so we
- 13:14:00take that and we repeat it across the
- 13:14:02city and provide a safe
- 13:14:05environment for everyone.
- 13:14:06The drivers, the people walking, the
- 13:14:09people biking, and you
- 13:14:11address that through design.
- 13:14:15And through design and through planning
- 13:14:16like what you're doing, you are making
- 13:14:18this city prepared for the
- 13:14:21future as we continue to grow.
- 13:14:24A tremendous amount of work. And we want
- 13:14:26to thank you for
- 13:14:26everything that you do. Thank you.
- 13:14:28And thank you for joining us. The City
- 13:14:31Center podcast is launching its second
- 13:14:33full year of video podcasts.
