Latest / Hurdle with Emily Abbate / 5-MINUTE FRIDAY: My Season Of 'Yes'
Transcript
- 0:22Speaker 1: Hey, everybody, Emily and Vadi. Here you are listening to
- 0:26Speaker 1: five Minute Friday on Hurdle. I am recording this in
- 0:31Speaker 1: my not so typical studio space, sitting inside of one
- 0:35Speaker 1: of my dearest friends homes in Rhode Island, and I
- 0:39Speaker 1: drove up here earlier today, just went a long weekend,
- 0:43Speaker 1: finally meeting her soon to be three month old baby,
- 0:46Speaker 1: and relaxing a bit as I sit here staring outside
- 0:50Speaker 1: of two massive French doors, thinking that this looks nothing
- 0:55Speaker 1: like my apartment anyway. Something that I want to talk
- 0:58Speaker 1: about today is saying yes, I've been trying to do
- 1:02Speaker 1: that a lot more lately. I am sure some of
- 1:07Speaker 1: you can relate to this. It's really easy for me
- 1:09Speaker 1: to get comfortable in my groove when I'm at home
- 1:11Speaker 1: of working, doing my runs, going to sporadical lotate these classes,
- 1:18Speaker 1: seeing some of my close friends, but mostly keeping a
- 1:22Speaker 1: lot to myself, and in between work travel, being here
- 1:27Speaker 1: and there in Rhode Island and next week Oregon, I
- 1:30Speaker 1: said to myself that I wanted to make a priority
- 1:33Speaker 1: of getting out a little bit more, of experiencing my
- 1:37Speaker 1: surroundings more. Summer in New York is one of my
- 1:40Speaker 1: favorite times, and I have been spending it hold up
- 1:43Speaker 1: in my apartment, not really allowing myself the freedom, the
- 1:50Speaker 1: space to try new things. And so lately when someone
- 1:56Speaker 1: has been asking me, do you want to do this?
- 1:58Speaker 1: Do you want to go to dinner? Do you want
- 1:59Speaker 1: to go to the beach? Do you want to go
- 2:01Speaker 1: to this random rooftop party in Bushwick? My answer has
- 2:06Speaker 1: been yes, and it's been paying off. I've been having fun.
- 2:11Speaker 1: I've been dancing for hours on end. I have been
- 2:14Speaker 1: letting my hair down and it feels good. I feel
- 2:19Speaker 1: like this episode is a reminder for me that it's
- 2:22Speaker 1: okay to step outside of routine. It doesn't mean that
- 2:25Speaker 1: you're going to negate your progress or go back to
- 2:28Speaker 1: square one, and that there can be time for all
- 2:31Speaker 1: of it if you only give yourself a little bit
- 2:33Speaker 1: of grace and you're flexible in your methods. So my
- 2:38Speaker 1: prompt for you this week, I'm coming to you from
- 2:41Speaker 1: a place of yes. What's one thing that you should
- 2:43Speaker 1: try saying yes to. What's one thing that you want
- 2:46Speaker 1: to get outside and do one thing that might be
- 2:48Speaker 1: outside of your comfort zone that could be just what
- 2:51Speaker 1: you need to be in a better place. And now
- 2:55Speaker 1: a listener question.
- 2:56Speaker 2: Family Like you, I am an avid traveler, but I
- 3:00Speaker 2: always like to learn from my fellow world warriors on
- 3:02Speaker 2: how they most optimize their time away from home. Can
- 3:06Speaker 2: you share a little bit about what some of your
- 3:08Speaker 2: must haves are when you're traveling, what bags you like
- 3:11Speaker 2: to use, things you like to bring along, and how
- 3:13Speaker 2: do you maintain a routine to stay with your nutrition
- 3:15Speaker 2: and fitness goals.
- 3:17Speaker 1: Hey Jamie, good question traveling. I love to do it.
- 3:22Speaker 1: I love to do it even more when it's not
- 3:24Speaker 1: for work. But I definitely have my travel go tos
- 3:29Speaker 1: on lock, so you ask me what my bags are currently,
- 3:34Speaker 1: I travel within a way bigger sized carry on which
- 3:38Speaker 1: fits in the overhead, which I feel like is something
- 3:40Speaker 1: that you need to know when you buy it. So
- 3:42Speaker 1: they have like the smaller carry on and then they
- 3:45Speaker 1: have the bigger size carry on and the bigger size
- 3:47Speaker 1: carry on works, so I use that one. I used
- 3:50Speaker 1: to have a black one. Let me recommend that if
- 3:54Speaker 1: you're interested in getting in a way bag, maybe consider
- 3:56Speaker 1: getting a different colored one because I find it so
- 3:59Speaker 1: much easy easier to know which away bag is my
- 4:03Speaker 1: away bag because I have a maroon colored one. I
- 4:05Speaker 1: literally used to open up the overhead bin and there
- 4:08Speaker 1: would be like twelve block away bags. So this way,
- 4:11Speaker 1: just for a little piece of mind, go color. You
- 4:14Speaker 1: won't regret it. My carry on, my small personal item
- 4:19Speaker 1: now is a Digny dover bag. I use the larger
- 4:23Speaker 1: land and carryall most often, but I actually recently bought
- 4:27Speaker 1: what I think is their diaper bag. I bought it
- 4:30Speaker 1: because I liked that it was rectangular in shape, so
- 4:33Speaker 1: it sits really nicely on top of my away suitcase.
- 4:36Speaker 1: So not only does it fit nicely on top, but
- 4:39Speaker 1: it also has that little sleeve that goes around the handles,
- 4:42Speaker 1: so when I'm kind of speeding through the airport, it
- 4:45Speaker 1: is just the perfect combo. And of course it fits
- 4:48Speaker 1: very nicely under the seat. When it comes to your
- 4:53Speaker 1: question about keeping my routine on the road, for me,
- 4:57Speaker 1: I always make sure two things. The first thing is
- 5:00Speaker 1: is I know what I want, hopefully in my workout
- 5:02Speaker 1: schedule to be so to speak, before I go. So
- 5:05Speaker 1: during marathon training season it can be a little bit different,
- 5:08Speaker 1: and that I'll have a certain amount of mileage that
- 5:10Speaker 1: I'll want to tackle. I'll be cognizant of that. When
- 5:12Speaker 1: it comes to booking, my travel plans, if my travel
- 5:14Speaker 1: plans are within my own power to book. But I'm
- 5:17Speaker 1: also recognizing that a few days away from whatever my
- 5:21Speaker 1: regular quote unquote routine is is not the end of
- 5:24Speaker 1: the world. So yeah, the first thing is knowing what
- 5:26Speaker 1: I'm aiming to do each day, and also doing a
- 5:29Speaker 1: little bit of research ahead of time, so I know
- 5:32Speaker 1: where I can go running if that's what's on the agenda.
- 5:35Speaker 1: The second thing I'll say is that it is okay
- 5:37Speaker 1: to deviate from the plan while you are traveling. It happens,
- 5:40Speaker 1: It happens to all of us, and your fitness will
- 5:43Speaker 1: still be there when you get home. So just because
- 5:45Speaker 1: you may not be doing what you're used to I e.
- 5:48Speaker 1: I gave that example of marathon training, that doesn't mean
- 5:51Speaker 1: that you can't find other ways to stay active while
- 5:53Speaker 1: you are on the road. What's that look like. That
- 5:56Speaker 1: could look like doing some sort of a walking tour.
- 5:58Speaker 1: It could look like doing a bike tour, like walking
- 6:00Speaker 1: to dinner instead of taking a car. There are so
- 6:03Speaker 1: many different options. But again, your best friend here, plan
- 6:07Speaker 1: ahead and you will be so so happy that you did.
- 6:11Speaker 1: That's it for this week. Make sure you're following along
- 6:13Speaker 1: with hurdle over on social welts at Hurdle podcast, I
- 6:16Speaker 1: am over at Emily a Body, another hurdle conquered. Catch
