- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome back to UConn Football Coaches Show. Jason Candle with us.
- 0:03Speaker 1: I'm Mike Crispino. Coach Jason, Caleb Osborne in this game
- 0:10Speaker 1: against Miami, Ohio. Let's talk about that touchdown run first.
- 0:13Speaker 1: You had the bird's eye view of it. I thought
- 0:15Speaker 1: that was a great fake on the RPO and he
- 0:18Speaker 1: sprints down the right sideline for a touchdown. That was
- 0:20Speaker 1: an electrifying play.
- 0:23Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, I think you're in one of those
- 0:26Speaker 2: situations where Yeah, it's fourth and one. You're trying to
- 0:29Speaker 2: get the first down unless the extra defender gets nosy
- 0:32Speaker 2: and puts his face in, you know, somewhere where it
- 0:34Speaker 2: shouldn't be. And, you know, you pull the ball out
- 0:36Speaker 2: of there and that's the result of it, right? And
- 0:39Speaker 2: credit him to, you know, a really good fake and
- 0:41Speaker 2: a good, really just a little bit of a slow
- 0:44Speaker 2: turn in the mesh point there to grab that defender's
- 0:46Speaker 2: attention and then, you know, create the space. And obviously,
- 0:49Speaker 2: you know, when he gets out there, he's really hard
- 0:51Speaker 2: to tackle. So, yeah, big play for there, especially at
- 0:54Speaker 2: that time and, you know, being at fourth and one.
- 0:57Speaker 1: Yeah, 38-yarder for the score and a 14-0 lead. The
- 1:01Speaker 1: offense with Osborne under a little pressure having to throw
- 1:06Speaker 1: in that game, how does that impact a guy like him? Now,
- 1:10Speaker 1: he's got some games under his belt, obviously, at Toledo
- 1:12Speaker 1: last year and now here with UConn. A quarterback under
- 1:16Speaker 1: pressure is going to make mistakes. It just happens. And
- 1:20Speaker 1: keeping him clean and giving him time to throw, how
- 1:24Speaker 1: far– Are you away from that with your offensive line play,
- 1:28Speaker 1: would you say, based on what you saw this weekend?
- 1:32Speaker 2: I think it's everything, right? I think it's the quarterback's
- 1:35Speaker 2: ability to know when it is required of him to
- 1:38Speaker 2: get it out of his hand. To me, quarterback sacks,
- 1:41Speaker 2: that's a quarterback statistic. That's not an offensive line statistic.
- 1:44Speaker 2: So they've got to understand. He's got to understand where
- 1:49Speaker 2: his protection is at, when he can get it out
- 1:50Speaker 2: of his hand quickly. they as in the offensive line
- 1:54Speaker 2: got to do a better job of understanding when we're
- 1:55Speaker 2: going to ask them to hold in there just a
- 1:57Speaker 2: little bit longer, seeing the twists up front and seeing
- 2:00Speaker 2: the movement that some of these defensive fronts are presenting.
- 2:04Speaker 2: And then, you know, where's the running back piece of it?
- 2:06Speaker 2: I mean, are you trying to get five out in
- 2:07Speaker 2: the route or are you only trying to get three
- 2:08Speaker 2: out in the route and there's really seven man protection?
- 2:10Speaker 2: Like there's a happy medium there and more at bats
- 2:14Speaker 2: we have, the better off we're going to be. But
- 2:16Speaker 2: in the short term, you know, we've got to protect
- 2:20Speaker 2: better and we've got to get the ball out on time.
- 2:22Speaker 2: In the long term, you know, we're going to start
- 2:24Speaker 2: to see more continuity and more rhythmic passing as time
- 2:28Speaker 2: passes by and the more these guys are together with
- 2:30Speaker 2: one another. So, you know, our completion percentage was down
- 2:33Speaker 2: a little bit. You know, success percentage or success rate
- 2:38Speaker 2: in the passing game just wasn't, you know, what it
- 2:40Speaker 2: needed to be. You know, but we threw it 32 times.
- 2:44Speaker 2: I mean, you just, you're not, you know, we hit
- 2:47Speaker 2: some explosive, but we weren't ever really in rhythm in
- 2:49Speaker 2: the passing game.
- 2:51Speaker 1: Yeah. late in the game, the interception that Caleb threw.
- 2:56Speaker 1: He was running right. He threw back to his left,
- 2:58Speaker 1: as I recall it.
- 3:00Speaker 2: Ill-advised?
- 3:01Speaker 1: How would you describe that? He was trying to make
- 3:03Speaker 1: a play. I understand that. Competitors try to do that.
- 3:07Speaker 1: Is that the kind of thing where you'd rather see
- 3:09Speaker 1: him just get rid of it?
- 3:12Speaker 2: Well, I think that's like making a left turn into
- 3:16Speaker 2: oncoming traffic. You know, you may get by one time and...
- 3:20Speaker 2: but the next time it's going to be fatal. So,
- 3:23Speaker 2: you know, you, you gotta do a good job and
- 3:26Speaker 2: you have to understand, you know, where, what the situation
- 3:30Speaker 2: calls for and what to do with the ball. One
- 3:33Speaker 2: of those times that I think that, Hey, look like,
- 3:36Speaker 2: you know, protection and where my rhythm and where the
- 3:40Speaker 2: timing is, is, is everything. You know, you get into
- 3:43Speaker 2: pressure situations, good defensive coordinators, aren't going to sit and
- 3:46Speaker 2: drop eight on you. They're going to pressure you. So,
- 3:49Speaker 2: you've got to have the proper timing on your drop.
- 3:51Speaker 2: You've got to have the proper footwork there. You've got
- 3:53Speaker 2: to have your eyes in the right place to see,
- 3:55Speaker 2: you know, where the read is going to require you
- 3:57Speaker 2: to take the football. And, again, as I mentioned, the
- 4:02Speaker 2: longer this goes, the better he's going to be prior
- 4:04Speaker 2: to the ball being snapped and the more rhythmic and
- 4:06Speaker 2: the more anticipation you're going to see once the ball
- 4:09Speaker 2: is in his hands. And when that stuff starts to click,
- 4:11Speaker 2: it's going to look really, really good.
- 4:13Speaker 1: Yeah, it's a learning process. I mean, I've been following–
- 4:17Speaker 1: sports for almost 50 years, but I remember the Phil
- 4:20Speaker 1: Sims back in the eighties with the giants early on
- 4:23Speaker 1: throwing the ball, trying to make every completion and not
- 4:27Speaker 1: making them, you know, and then Bill Parcells all over
- 4:30Speaker 1: him saying, get rid of it, throw it away. Don't
- 4:32Speaker 1: get us in trouble. And he finally learned it took
- 4:35Speaker 1: Phil like a year, almost two years of, you know,
- 4:38Speaker 1: taking his lumps. But then he became like the guy that,
- 4:42Speaker 1: really never made a bad play as a quarterback. It's,
- 4:45Speaker 1: it's an education process is what I'm getting at.
- 4:48Speaker 2: Well, it's a, it's a, it's an education process. It's
- 4:53Speaker 2: like getting in the car and driving without ever taking
- 4:56Speaker 2: the written part of it. Right. I mean, you just,
- 4:58Speaker 2: you know, you got to learn, you know, that's just,
- 5:00Speaker 2: there's no substitute for real football. And unfortunately, you know,
- 5:04Speaker 2: with what, how you practice and how you have to practice,
- 5:08Speaker 2: you don't, you don't get a lot of chances to
- 5:09Speaker 2: hit the quarterback and practice. And, you know, I'd be
- 5:12Speaker 2: the dumbest guy alive to have that guy get hurt
- 5:14Speaker 2: on a Tuesday practice. So, you know, you gotta try
- 5:18Speaker 2: to simulate it the best you can. And then, you know, and,
- 5:21Speaker 2: and along with that comes with some, you know, some
- 5:23Speaker 2: mistakes on Saturday and with that comes some really good
- 5:26Speaker 2: plays too. So, you know, we're trying to eliminate the
- 5:29Speaker 2: negative ones and trying to highlight the positive ones and
- 5:31Speaker 2: try to find out ways to get more of them.
- 5:34Speaker 1: You know, getting back to the game for a quick
- 5:36Speaker 1: second here, coach, uh, Second quarter, Miami, Ohio got their
- 5:39Speaker 1: offense going. David McComb was throwing the ball, and the
- 5:42Speaker 1: Huskies didn't get a lot of pressure on him. I
- 5:44Speaker 1: think there was one quarterback hurry in the game. Was
- 5:48Speaker 1: that part of the turning point of the game in
- 5:50Speaker 1: your mind? Because he got in a little bit of
- 5:52Speaker 1: a rhythm there. He got in a groove, and I
- 5:54Speaker 1: felt like he was just standing around looking for receivers
- 5:57Speaker 1: and finding them all over the place, and that kind
- 5:59Speaker 1: of turned the momentum, it looked like, in the game.
- 6:03Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, good quarterback. He's going to make some plays.
- 6:08Speaker 2: The receivers helped them out. You know, there's a couple
- 6:11Speaker 2: extended one-handed catches in there in the second quarter that
- 6:14Speaker 2: I thought were back-breaking plays. But, you know, again, I
- 6:17Speaker 2: still think it's about our response and being able to
- 6:20Speaker 2: overcome those. And, you know, like the interception that wasn't
- 6:24Speaker 2: an interception I thought was a massive play. We're going
- 6:26Speaker 2: to have the ball at the 26-yard line with two
- 6:29Speaker 2: minutes of change left, up seven with the ball going
- 6:31Speaker 2: in before half. And, you know– it goes the other way. They,
- 6:36Speaker 2: they call pass interference and the very next play, we,
- 6:40Speaker 2: we give up an explosive pass. So you, that went
- 6:44Speaker 2: from what could have been for that young man's mental
- 6:47Speaker 2: makeup to man, we caught a break in the very
- 6:49Speaker 2: next play, man, I got, I got positive momentum out
- 6:52Speaker 2: of it. So it goes from potentially being 21 to seven.
- 6:55Speaker 2: So now it's 14 to 14 and you you're, you're
- 6:58Speaker 2: in for all you can ask for. Yeah.
- 7:00Speaker 1: Yeah. That, It's interesting how a 60-minute game with all
- 7:03Speaker 1: those plays, 150 snaps, and one little play or penalty
- 7:08Speaker 1: that gets called and turns something around can change the momentum.
- 7:12Speaker 1: And we're going to talk a little bit later to
- 7:14Speaker 1: Matt Reagan, the tight end, about that and player response
- 7:18Speaker 1: to that stuff. Is that something that you think about
- 7:21Speaker 1: when you're working with your team this week and All right, guys,
- 7:24Speaker 1: we're going to have adversity. How are we going to respond?
- 7:27Speaker 1: Because you've got a big game coming up. You've got
- 7:29Speaker 1: a regional rival coming in here from the ACC in Syracuse.
- 7:33Speaker 2: Well, it's everything. And I don't really care if it's
- 7:35Speaker 2: good or bad. I mean, I don't want to paint
- 7:37Speaker 2: the picture that I'm complaining about penalties and making excuses
- 7:39Speaker 2: about penalties or things that aren't. That has nothing to
- 7:41Speaker 2: do with it. It has everything to do with the response.
- 7:45Speaker 2: You know, an official throws a flag, he's not going
- 7:46Speaker 2: to pick it up, put it back in his pocket
- 7:47Speaker 2: and say, sorry. It is what it is. So play
- 7:50Speaker 2: the next play. Yeah. Play the next play, you know,
- 7:55Speaker 2: and move on. And I'm talking about coaches, too. I mean,
- 7:58Speaker 2: you know, that interception, it was an interception. You look
- 8:00Speaker 2: at our sideline and, you know, we got everybody in
- 8:02Speaker 2: our programs like arms up in the air like, man,
- 8:05Speaker 2: I can't believe he called that. Well, he did. And
- 8:07Speaker 2: it doesn't matter. So, you know, we can sit and
- 8:10Speaker 2: put our head, you know, where we can get back
- 8:12Speaker 2: to the line of scrimmage and get a call, play
- 8:14Speaker 2: the play and make it right, because you're going to
- 8:17Speaker 2: have plenty of opportunities to make it right, whether the
- 8:19Speaker 2: last one was good, bad or ugly.
- 8:21Speaker 1: Before we take a break and go to talk about
- 8:23Speaker 1: Syracuse and other things, the special teams, we talked a
- 8:26Speaker 1: lot about that before the game. And we're going to
- 8:28Speaker 1: talk to Tommy Warner, your punter, a little bit later
- 8:30Speaker 1: on about that. That was pretty important, the way you
- 8:33Speaker 1: kept the ball away on the kickoffs, the way he punted.
- 8:36Speaker 1: It kind of kept Miami, Ohio's special teams not being
- 8:39Speaker 1: a factor.
- 8:41Speaker 2: Well, that's an organization that prides themselves on being really
- 8:43Speaker 2: good in the kicking game. And, you know, if it
- 8:45Speaker 2: wasn't for the kickoff out of bounds and the penalty
- 8:47Speaker 2: on the, you You know, whatever. If you don't have
- 8:53Speaker 2: the kickoff out of bounds, you probably win the hidden
- 8:55Speaker 2: yardage battle by a good margin. And that's the only
- 8:57Speaker 2: really way to say, hey, you won the game in
- 9:00Speaker 2: the kicking game. You look at the hidden yardage, and
- 9:02Speaker 2: as long as there wasn't any explosives either way, you know.
- 9:06Speaker 2: So in a long story short, that unit did what
- 9:09Speaker 2: it needed to do to help us win the game.
- 9:12Speaker 2: Would I wish we'd have made the field goal at
- 9:13Speaker 2: the end of half? Yeah. You know, but they missed
- 9:17Speaker 2: one to hit the crossbar, too. You know, it's just
- 9:19Speaker 2: kind of back and forth.
- 9:20Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 9:20Speaker 2: You know, if you can play that part of it
- 9:23Speaker 2: even and your defense only gives up 24 points in
- 9:26Speaker 2: today's day and age, in my opinion, you should win
- 9:28Speaker 2: the football game. Score more points. Right.
- 9:30Speaker 1: No, listen, I think I've been saying this for a
- 9:33Speaker 1: few seasons now. You've got to hit the 30. If
- 9:35Speaker 1: you get the 30, you pretty much can win every week.
- 9:37Speaker 1: All right, Jason Candle with us. We're back with more.
- 9:40Speaker 1: We're going to talk about Syracuse, that upcoming game this weekend.
- 9:42Speaker 1: That's a big one, noon kick at the rent when
- 9:45Speaker 1: we continue with the UConn Football Coaches Show on Learfield.
