- 0:00Speaker 1: In the state of Louisiana.
- 0:04Speaker 2: It was also at a time when the jerseys in
- 0:06Speaker 2: the uniforms were becoming so much cooler.
- 0:10Speaker 1: How cool did Drew look?
- 0:12Speaker 2: And all the different the black, the gold, the white,
- 0:16Speaker 2: and all the different color combinations that they use. Now,
- 0:21Speaker 2: I know many of you went down every Sunday for years.
- 0:25Speaker 2: I got to go to a good many games and
- 0:28Speaker 2: it was a ton of fun. You know, I told
- 0:31Speaker 2: you I'd not gone for seven years. I had not
- 0:35Speaker 2: gone to a game. I'd actually been to more. The
- 0:39Speaker 2: first company I went to work for out of grad
- 0:41Speaker 2: school was in Baton Rooge, and the owner of that
- 0:45Speaker 2: company had season tickets to the what were they then?
- 0:48Speaker 1: Jackson?
- 0:49Speaker 2: In two and two thousand and one, the NBA team
- 0:51Speaker 2: Hot Yes, thank you, Chris Paul was there. He became
- 0:54Speaker 2: my favorite player again. I'm I'm a point guard guy.
- 0:58Speaker 2: Y'all have heard me ramble about all the different point
- 1:01Speaker 2: guards that I love and love watching him play, from
- 1:04Speaker 2: David Rivers to Isaiah Thomas and many many more, and
- 1:08Speaker 2: of course the ones that have come through here I've
- 1:12Speaker 2: been obsessed with. But you know, I went Jackson, Kyle
- 1:17Speaker 2: was averaging. I mean I went over thirty games. Yeah,
- 1:23Speaker 2: I mean I just went to a ton of NBA.
- 1:24Speaker 2: He was always asking me to go and we would.
- 1:29Speaker 2: We were in the hotel in the condom many of business,
- 1:31Speaker 2: so he would find a hotel owner in New Orleans
- 1:33Speaker 2: and we would go and it was fun. And I
- 1:35Speaker 2: thought Chris Paul was amazing watching him play, because I mean,
- 1:39Speaker 2: I really value the guy the number one the guy
- 1:41Speaker 2: who plays the number one position of the point guard.
- 1:45Speaker 2: And then I'm down there doing shows. A Mississippi company
- 1:53Speaker 2: Post Katrina had bought this beautiful piece of property down
- 1:56Speaker 2: in the Warehouse District and they were actually at that
- 1:59Speaker 2: time competing with Donald Trump to get their condom minium
- 2:05Speaker 2: up before Trump's crew did, which I think he was
- 2:09Speaker 2: like two or three blocks down. But it was during
- 2:13Speaker 2: the revitalization or i'll steal from Drew Brees, the Resurrection
- 2:17Speaker 2: of New Orleans, and we were doing shows down there,
- 2:20Speaker 2: and I had this idea that I could go meet
- 2:25Speaker 2: with the Two Lane Athletic director and get their top
- 2:28Speaker 2: one hundred donor list for this Mississippi company that and
- 2:31Speaker 2: I thought Two Lane alums will buy condos on the
- 2:34Speaker 2: water in the Warehouse district. This makes sense, and I
- 2:38Speaker 2: got a call while I was doing a show. It
- 2:42Speaker 2: was like midafternoon, and I don't remember what the lineup
- 2:44Speaker 2: was then, but I'm this is when I was still
- 2:46Speaker 2: on AM, so I was on Super Sport nine thirty
- 2:50Speaker 2: and it's before going to FM fifty thousand watt ESPN
- 2:55Speaker 2: in two thousand and nine, So this is around oh six.
- 2:59Speaker 1: Maybe don't remember, but I.
- 3:01Speaker 2: Still remember guards and all that, all that stuff down
- 3:04Speaker 2: in New Orleans and soel On and I stayed at
- 3:06Speaker 2: the every time I would go down there, I would
- 3:08Speaker 2: stay at the the little groovy artsy Hyatt or whatever
- 3:13Speaker 2: hotel right across the street. It's down there where Lucy's
- 3:15Speaker 2: is is where the Mississippi Company had their piece of
- 3:21Speaker 2: property where they wanted to build their kind of minims.
- 3:24Speaker 2: And I ended up meeting with the athletic director at
- 3:27Speaker 2: Tulane because Archie Manning was kind enough to put me
- 3:31Speaker 2: in with him. His name was Rick and Jackson, if
- 3:33Speaker 2: you'll pull that around six oh seven, super nice guy.
- 3:37Speaker 1: He had just hired Bob Toledo. Toledo.
- 3:40Speaker 2: UCLA had fired probably their most successful coach the last
- 3:45Speaker 2: thirty years, Dan Guerrero. Guerrero was really good at this
- 3:50Speaker 2: and Rick Trickett or something Dixon Dixon Trickett was an
- 3:53Speaker 2: offensive line coach at Mississippi State in Florida State. Rick
- 3:57Speaker 2: Dixon was one of the nicest guys I've ever been around,
- 4:00Speaker 2: and I have a meeting with him because my parents
- 4:04Speaker 2: grew up in Drew, Misissippi, and my mom graduated the
- 4:07Speaker 2: same graduating class as Archie Manning, and my dad used
- 4:11Speaker 2: an attorney and Drew his whole life, my whole life,
- 4:15Speaker 2: and Archie's mom was a secretary. So I knew I
- 4:20Speaker 2: wanted to get to Rick Dixon to get the one
- 4:23Speaker 2: hundred the top one hundred donor list and for this
- 4:28Speaker 2: Mississippi company. And Rick Dixon met me on a summer day.
- 4:35Speaker 2: They had just finished the two lane Baseball stadium, in
- 4:39Speaker 2: which when Katrina hit I think his name was Rick
- 4:45Speaker 2: Jones Jackson, if you'll look look it up, two lane
- 4:48Speaker 2: baseball coach. They were number one in the country the
- 4:51Speaker 2: year before. Now, don't forget that cana Zero and Gotro
- 4:56Speaker 2: had gone through there five years before, Gotro being a
- 4:59Speaker 2: first round pick for the New York Yankees and canas
- 5:02Speaker 2: Era was a good player, and I think they went
- 5:03Speaker 2: to the CWS that one year.
- 5:06Speaker 3: But.
- 5:08Speaker 2: We met in his he had this really cool office.
- 5:13Speaker 2: He's wearing birkenstocks and a golf shirt and shorts. I'm like,
- 5:18Speaker 2: all right, this this guy I got. I like this
- 5:20Speaker 2: by ordered he ordered launch and we hang out and
- 5:25Speaker 2: I'm I'm asking for all this stuff and he's on board,
- 5:28Speaker 2: which was you know, athletic directors act like they're they're
- 5:32Speaker 2: running the CIA. And then he took me down on
- 5:35Speaker 2: the field and I ran into what was that guy's name.
- 5:38Speaker 1: Rick Dixon or Rick the other guy that you had it,
- 5:40Speaker 1: Rick Jones.
- 5:41Speaker 2: Okay, I ran into Rick Jones on the turf field
- 5:44Speaker 2: at at Tulane Stadium. That's my memory of kind of
- 5:48Speaker 2: post Katrina, but also Breeze and Peyton. My point in
- 5:52Speaker 2: all that was when I did one of those shows
- 5:55Speaker 2: from that property. One afternoon, the Bank Plus crew called me.
- 6:00Speaker 2: It was like, come up to the game. It was
- 6:01Speaker 2: an exhibition gown. I don't want to go to a
- 6:03Speaker 2: Saints exhibition galnt even want to go to a Saints
- 6:05Speaker 2: regular seizing game. And they're like, no, no, no, come just
- 6:08Speaker 2: come up here join it. So I'm in the warehouse, sister.
- 6:10Speaker 2: All I had to do is take the back way
- 6:12Speaker 2: up to the Dome. I did, and I kind of
- 6:15Speaker 2: caught the bug again and then they won, Yeah, buddy,
- 6:18Speaker 2: and then the rest is history, as so many of
- 6:20Speaker 2: us know. And number nine led you to the Promised
- 6:23Speaker 2: Land and some of the most amazing memories that you've
- 6:26Speaker 2: ever had in your life period, which is what it's
- 6:29Speaker 2: all about. I mean, everybody wants goose ole. Miss has
- 6:31Speaker 2: been going through this the last few years. Everybody wants
- 6:34Speaker 2: goosebumps in the stadium or in the arena because when
- 6:41Speaker 2: you're high five in your your buddies and you win
- 6:44Speaker 2: it wow and you're winning.
- 6:47Speaker 1: That's what it's all about, all right. We are the
- 6:53Speaker 1: Out of.
- 6:53Speaker 2: Bounds Show, ESPN one oh five nine, The Zone. Mister
- 6:58Speaker 2: Parlay Jackson Meadows, double down. We're gonna no, We're gonna
- 7:04Speaker 2: find some teasers this year. That's what we came up with.
- 7:08Speaker 2: One teas per weekend. We're gonna do that. The Dancing
- 7:14Speaker 2: Rabbit Golf text line six ozho one eight eight five
- 7:17Speaker 2: three seven seven six Mike Netillier at eight thirty h
- 7:49Speaker 2: m off the Wackle Aida Bounds ESPN one oh five nine.
- 8:21Speaker 2: The Zone, brought to you by Matt Anderson at Southeastern
- 8:25Speaker 2: Land Group. Are you looking for that piece of property?
- 8:30Speaker 2: Do you want to call someone who knows when uh,
- 8:35Speaker 2: he knows a track of land before it even goes
- 8:41Speaker 2: up for sale, before it's even listed. Matt Anderson, Southeastern
- 8:45Speaker 2: Land Group six oh one, four zero eight, five to one,
- 8:51Speaker 2: five to five, Matt Anderson, Matt Anderson, Southeastern Land Group.
- 8:55Speaker 2: He'll find your next farm or hunting camp, that beautiful
- 8:59Speaker 2: piece of property that you you've been looking for. Matt
- 9:01Speaker 2: Anderson's Southeastern Land Group called Matt today.
- 9:05Speaker 1: He does a great job. He's been texting me all
- 9:07Speaker 1: these pieces of property that they've sold this summer.
- 9:11Speaker 2: A couple of those tracks in the Mississippi Delta, a
- 9:15Speaker 2: beautiful bow bound straight funk, mister Parlay.
- 9:18Speaker 1: But we're gonna go. We're gonna go with teases this year.
- 9:23Speaker 1: So all we do, all we have to do is
- 9:24Speaker 1: just pick one two game teaser. It's easy, okay, I
- 9:29Speaker 1: mean that should be a winner? What eighty percent of
- 9:31Speaker 1: the time? What would hope? Okay? But because don't we
- 9:35Speaker 1: have those friends that win all the time. I mean,
- 9:38Speaker 1: I got buddies, they don't lose.
- 9:40Speaker 2: Never lost, They've won eight football seasons in a row,
- 9:44Speaker 2: Steady Dubs, Hey man, I'm with that, Yes you are.
- 9:50Speaker 2: ESPN one oh five nine The Zone Lunch today brought
- 9:53Speaker 2: to you by Martin's and Livingston. They posted a picture
- 9:56Speaker 2: of their Oyster po Boy, which I've talked about thirty
- 10:00Speaker 2: five times on this show. The Oyster Poe Boy at
- 10:05Speaker 2: Martin's and Livingston with an ice cold Key City, Mississippi Queen.
- 10:10Speaker 2: All right, Jackson, we dropped the Drew Brees. This is
- 10:12Speaker 2: Breeze talking about what play. I mean, this changed everything
- 10:17Speaker 2: for you and Number nine's going into the Pro Football
- 10:21Speaker 2: Hall of Fame and brought the Lombardi Trophy to New Orleans.
- 10:25Speaker 2: This is Breeze walking you through what happened between Miami
- 10:28Speaker 2: and New Orleans.
- 10:29Speaker 1: How close were you to me? Ended up in Miami Dogs.
- 10:32Speaker 4: I mean yeah close. I mean on paper like that
- 10:35Speaker 4: was an obvious decision.
- 10:36Speaker 5: It was Miami all the way. Miami had Nick Saban.
- 10:38Speaker 4: They had just come off a nine and seven seas
- 10:40Speaker 4: where they won like the last seven in a row,
- 10:42Speaker 4: so they kind of had it figured out. Defense was
- 10:44Speaker 4: lights out, Zach Thomas, Jason Taylor, Oh yeah, their offense.
- 10:47Speaker 4: I loved all their coaching staff. Mike Malarkey was the OC.
- 10:50Speaker 4: Jason Garrett quarterback coach. Hudson Haalp was there a line
- 10:53Speaker 4: coach who had an r O line coach the.
- 10:54Speaker 5: Year before when we had won the division.
- 10:56Speaker 1: Love hud.
- 10:57Speaker 4: They were running the same offense that we were running,
- 10:59Speaker 4: like Miami Dolphins. I'm sitting there eating dinner on Wayne
- 11:03Speaker 4: Heisinger's yacht. He's there at dinner talking about, Hey, we're
- 11:06Speaker 4: gonna go. We're gonna go play golf in Scotland every
- 11:08Speaker 4: every summer with Dan.
- 11:11Speaker 5: I got out of helicopter over there. We're just gonna
- 11:12Speaker 5: hop around, no state income tax. I'm like, dude, this
- 11:15Speaker 5: is all paper. Miami here I come.
- 11:18Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 11:19Speaker 4: And then on the flip side, you got New Orleans right,
- 11:21Speaker 4: six months post Katrina, some unknown head coach named Sean.
- 11:24Speaker 5: Payton, Right, is this guy right?
- 11:27Speaker 4: And ironically five years previous when I was being when
- 11:30Speaker 4: I was being like in the draft, Tom conn in
- 11:33Speaker 4: my agent, I had probably fifteen teams that I thought
- 11:35Speaker 4: my drafting and he's like, we're going through that list
- 11:38Speaker 4: leading up to draft day and he's like, man, you
- 11:39Speaker 4: got all these great possibilities.
- 11:41Speaker 5: He's like, man, you.
- 11:42Speaker 4: Know Honestly, the only one I would really not want
- 11:44Speaker 4: you to go to is the New Orleans Saints like
- 11:45Speaker 4: kind of dysfunctional party town, this and that.
- 11:48Speaker 5: Like so I had that ringing in my head as well.
- 11:50Speaker 4: Right, So again on paper, it's like this is so obvious,
- 11:54Speaker 4: and I'm not leaving anything to chance. I'm gonna go
- 11:56Speaker 4: and I'm gonna give each one like it's fair opportunity.
- 11:59Speaker 4: And like the Miami trip was amazing, with the exception
- 12:03Speaker 4: of they put me through the ringer like six hours
- 12:06Speaker 4: of these medical testing because I was only too like
- 12:10Speaker 4: eight weeks postop on an eight month rehab, so I
- 12:14Speaker 4: was nowhere close.
- 12:14Speaker 5: I mean my arm and I'm still kind of in a.
- 12:16Speaker 4: Slang, you know, and I can't do anything, and they're
- 12:19Speaker 4: they do the you know, the saline solution, the contrast MRI.
- 12:22Speaker 5: So I'm like in an MRI.
- 12:23Speaker 4: Two for two hours, just aching, right, I get out
- 12:25Speaker 4: of that. They stick these big needles in my shoulder
- 12:27Speaker 4: to test nerve endings. They're they're they're they're wanting to
- 12:29Speaker 4: test everything. So I just I got this feeling of
- 12:32Speaker 4: like doubt, like they don't really and and then their
- 12:36Speaker 4: doctors were the ones who told Saban, we think he's
- 12:38Speaker 4: got a twenty five percent chance of ever coming back
- 12:40Speaker 4: and playing again. And I go to New Orleans and
- 12:44Speaker 4: it's like, you are our guy, like Sean Payton, Mickey Limus,
- 12:47Speaker 4: you're our guy, or building this offense around you. They
- 12:50Speaker 4: did everything they could to kind of roll out the
- 12:52Speaker 4: red carpet despite.
- 12:53Speaker 5: All the circumstances. I mean, No Orleans was still destroyed,
- 12:56Speaker 5: right like right.
- 12:56Speaker 4: And the epic story is Sean Payton, after this great
- 13:00Speaker 4: visit there, gets lost in the Lakeview neighborhood and we're
- 13:04Speaker 4: driving through there and houses are off of foundations, Chevy
- 13:07Speaker 4: truck upside down, the living room. All of a sudden,
- 13:09Speaker 4: car stops, there's a tugboat in the middle of road,
- 13:11Speaker 4: and I'm looking at my wife like are you seeing
- 13:13Speaker 4: what I'm seeing? But it's also one of those moments like, man,
- 13:15Speaker 4: this is so much bigger than just football, right, like
- 13:17Speaker 4: wee be a part of one of them, you know,
- 13:19Speaker 4: the resurrection of one of America's greatest cities. Like this
- 13:21Speaker 4: is God's calling in our life. And so that was
- 13:23Speaker 4: the determining fact.
- 13:26Speaker 1: Uh did that give you chill bumps? It did me?
- 13:31Speaker 1: And I've listened to it six times.
- 13:34Speaker 2: That was Drew Brees on the decision making process from
- 13:39Speaker 2: the Miami Dolphins to the Northern Saints.
- 13:40Speaker 1: I want y'all to think about this. We talk about recruiting.
- 13:43Speaker 2: So many of you are most of you are in
- 13:44Speaker 2: recruiting and sales in some way, shape or form. We
- 13:48Speaker 2: talk about it all the time because you want to
- 13:50Speaker 2: recruit good people. You want to recruit a good wife
- 13:52Speaker 2: or husband. You want to recruit to, you know, a
- 13:54Speaker 2: good neighborhood, community job. You want really good people around you,
- 13:59Speaker 2: quality people in life. That's all. That's all recruiting and sales.
- 14:04Speaker 2: It's got to be authentic too. But I want you
- 14:06Speaker 2: to think about this, since we've talked recruiting nine thousand
- 14:09Speaker 2: times on this show. In sec football, Miami had everything.
- 14:16Speaker 1: They had all the momentum.
- 14:19Speaker 2: Did you listen everything he listed? They had everything they
- 14:23Speaker 2: had Nick Saban, They were coming off nine and seven.
- 14:25Speaker 2: The defense was already there. The offensive line coach that
- 14:28Speaker 2: was there had been with the San Diego Chargers. Drew
- 14:31Speaker 2: loved him. Wayne Heizinga is not fighting a major catastrophe,
- 14:37Speaker 2: natural disaster of a hurricane. They're down on a yacht.
- 14:41Speaker 2: It's beautiful who doesn't want to be on a yacht
- 14:43Speaker 2: today in a bay or somewhere in Miami. I'm in
- 14:47Speaker 2: sipping on a good beverage and going through some lobster.
- 14:52Speaker 1: And then and then they put him through.
- 14:54Speaker 2: This rigorous you know, what is your shoulder doing only
- 15:00Speaker 2: a couple of months postop.
- 15:02Speaker 1: Yeah, and.
- 15:05Speaker 2: Then he goes to New Orleans six months post Katrina.
- 15:09Speaker 2: And it's a little bit of this, a little bit
- 15:12Speaker 2: of that, right, But they're all Sean Payton and Mickey
- 15:16Speaker 2: Loomis are like, you're our guy. We're not gonna put
- 15:19Speaker 2: you in an MRI for two hours. Yeah, We're not
- 15:21Speaker 2: gonna stick you with a bunch of needles. We need
- 15:23Speaker 2: you to keep rehabbing. Do y'all realize Nick Saban doesn't
- 15:29Speaker 2: go to the University of Alabama? Do you realize the
- 15:31Speaker 2: impact that that has on you as ole miss Mississippi
- 15:34Speaker 2: State fans? I mean, think about that twenty fifteen old
- 15:37Speaker 2: miss team, Right, Nick Saban doesn't go to Alabama? If
- 15:48Speaker 2: and I heard it was Danny Kanell's dad is the
- 15:50Speaker 2: orthopedic surgeon? Was the orthopedic surgeon down there? I don't
- 15:54Speaker 2: know if that's accurate. That made that call but Saban
- 15:58Speaker 2: has talked about it in the last couple of years
- 16:00Speaker 2: a little bit more open. But if Nick Saban doesn't
- 16:05Speaker 2: go to Alabama, what does college football look like from
- 16:10Speaker 2: twenty ten to twenty twenty one or two thousand Let
- 16:14Speaker 2: me back up a little bit about two thousand and
- 16:17Speaker 2: eight to twenty twenty one. What does college football look like?
- 16:22Speaker 2: Who wins national titles instead?
- 16:24Speaker 1: Who goes to the se Who goes to Atlanta instead?
- 16:27Speaker 2: Obama, Mississippi State, and OLM miss had some good teams,
- 16:31Speaker 2: so did some others. Sure did, right, Remember Johnny Manziel
- 16:34Speaker 2: went eleven and two. If we'd had a playoff, I
- 16:36Speaker 2: think they'd have won it. They blew out Oklahoma, They
- 16:40Speaker 2: blew out Oklahoma and the Cotton Bowl that year, But
- 16:44Speaker 2: we weren't. You know, it wasn't structured.
- 16:46Speaker 1: The right way yet.
- 16:49Speaker 2: What happens if Saban doesn't make that run. We know
- 16:52Speaker 2: what happens. If the Orthos in Miami say let's go
- 16:57Speaker 2: and Drew and Nick continue to win nine, ten eleven
- 17:01Speaker 2: games a year in the NFL, which is great or
- 17:04Speaker 2: really good, and Saban doesn't go to the University of Alabama.
- 17:11Speaker 1: What happened? Rich Rod had already turned him down. Who
- 17:15Speaker 1: is gonna be next? Do y'all? Remember Damn I can't.
- 17:21Speaker 2: Uh.
- 17:22Speaker 1: Mal Moore was against the wall, that's for sure.
- 17:25Speaker 2: The ad at Bama Mike Attillier w WL Radio coming
- 17:28Speaker 2: up next.
- 17:57Speaker 3: Off the waggles.
- 18:01Speaker 1: Man.
- 18:01Speaker 3: He's got a set of myths on him.
- 18:05Speaker 1: We are the out of Bound show.
- 18:07Speaker 2: We're brought to you by Sound and Communications and our
- 18:11Speaker 2: coverage of Drew Brees going into.
- 18:14Speaker 1: The Pro Football Hall of Fame first.
- 18:17Speaker 2: Ballot August eighth, and who'd at Nation will be partying
- 18:22Speaker 2: from New Orleans to the Mississippi Gulf Coast to Jackson
- 18:26Speaker 2: and all the other communities that support who'd at Nation
- 18:30Speaker 2: and the New Orleans Saints. Drew Brees will go into
- 18:33Speaker 2: the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Our coverage is brought
- 18:36Speaker 2: to you by Sound and Communications soundcomav dot com, the
- 18:42Speaker 2: absolute leader in video walls for your hospital, all right,
- 18:46Speaker 2: for your athletic facility, for your church, all powered by
- 18:50Speaker 2: sound Sound, Sound and Communications soundcomav dot com is the
- 18:57Speaker 2: leader in video walls. We welcome in Mike two WWL
- 19:01Speaker 2: Radio TV, New Orleans. He covered Sean and Drew from
- 19:04Speaker 2: the jump every single day, every single week, through the
- 19:08Speaker 2: magical time that gave us unbelievable right experiences that we're
- 19:14Speaker 2: talking about. We've been playing the audio from Drew Brees
- 19:17Speaker 2: this morning talking about it came down to Miami and
- 19:21Speaker 2: New Orleans and if Miami takes him and the doctors
- 19:24Speaker 2: don't say no, then Saban doesn't go to Alabama, and
- 19:29Speaker 2: then what does the college football and the.
- 19:30Speaker 1: SEC look like? That we all love.
- 19:32Speaker 2: So we bring in Mike d on the Farm Bureau
- 19:35Speaker 2: Insurance guest line.
- 19:38Speaker 1: Mike D.
- 19:40Speaker 2: We've had many segments with you on Drew, but we
- 19:42Speaker 2: can't do enough. What was it like right when Drew
- 19:47Speaker 2: got to know this young, young, young Drew Brees that's
- 19:50Speaker 2: trying to rehab his shoulder and boyish good looks.
- 19:56Speaker 1: Maybe I don't.
- 19:56Speaker 2: Know if naive is the right word because he's already
- 19:59Speaker 2: been in the NFL unproven, But what was it like
- 20:02Speaker 2: to cover him that first year?
- 20:04Speaker 1: Might be.
- 20:07Speaker 3: It was a lot of different features to it, you know,
- 20:12Speaker 3: having watched him and just how successful he was that
- 20:15Speaker 3: p due and then he goes to San Diego and
- 20:20Speaker 3: you know he hit some high notes there, but you eventually,
- 20:25Speaker 3: once they picked Philip Rivers in round one that he
- 20:29Speaker 3: wasn't going to stay there, that something was going to happen.
- 20:33Speaker 3: And he came in here with a chip on his shoulder. Again,
- 20:39Speaker 3: he had been through surgery that had not been done
- 20:43Speaker 3: before at that time Doctor James Andrews had done surgery,
- 20:50Speaker 3: but not on the quarterback position and coming back from that,
- 20:57Speaker 3: and so from a Demeter standpoint, he he's always been
- 21:00Speaker 3: a super focused guy. He's always been the type of
- 21:05Speaker 3: individual that's going to give you everything. He's got to
- 21:09Speaker 3: get back to playing. But there was a lot of
- 21:13Speaker 3: uncertainty about Drew Brees because there was no textbook about
- 21:20Speaker 3: this is how so and sol came back from that
- 21:23Speaker 3: injury that had not happened before. And so while there
- 21:29Speaker 3: was excitement because the team had drafted Reggie Bush, Sean
- 21:36Speaker 3: had a lot of excitement around him, Drew had a
- 21:39Speaker 3: lot of excitement around him, there was also uncertainty. And
- 21:45Speaker 3: I remember Zach Street telling me the story that you know, listen,
- 21:51Speaker 3: he said, I'm just trying to make the team at
- 21:53Speaker 3: this point. I'm a late round pick. I'm trying to
- 21:56Speaker 3: make the team. But in watching him throw the first
- 21:59Speaker 3: few arms, he was like, man, you know, he never
- 22:02Speaker 3: threw football more than twenty yards in training camp and
- 22:08Speaker 3: think about that, never threw a football more than twenty yards.
- 22:13Speaker 3: And Zach was like, Okay, I guess maybe it'll come around.
- 22:17Speaker 3: And I think it was the third preseason game they
- 22:21Speaker 3: called the play and you know then you would be
- 22:25Speaker 3: a longer pass and Drew hid it and Zach was, Okay,
- 22:29Speaker 3: that's why we got him. That's that's why we got him.
- 22:33Speaker 3: So it was a process with it. But I'll be
- 22:35Speaker 3: honest with you. His demeanor on how he changed things
- 22:39Speaker 3: and how he reacted to everyone and everybody never really changed. Wow,
- 22:47Speaker 3: the Drew Brees that came in and ose six to
- 22:50Speaker 3: the Drew Brees when he were tired, he was the
- 22:53Speaker 3: same guy. Okay, so a little bit richer towards the end,
- 22:58Speaker 3: but that he was the same guy. And his interaction
- 23:04Speaker 3: and you know, he sort of has a bit of
- 23:07Speaker 3: a dry sense of humor about it, and so you
- 23:11Speaker 3: get accustomed to, you know, his personality and just how
- 23:15Speaker 3: he reacts to certain things, and you know, he's the
- 23:19Speaker 3: guy's he's all business. Now, I'm gonna be honest, he
- 23:24Speaker 3: is all business and he'll you know, he'll have a
- 23:28Speaker 3: little good time, you know, and that sort of thing.
- 23:31Speaker 3: But man, he's all about doing what's best to get
- 23:36Speaker 3: himself better as a player. And I never thought he'd
- 23:41Speaker 3: be a coach because I thought, you know, those type
- 23:43Speaker 3: individuals sometimes they don't understand what other people go through
- 23:50Speaker 3: to struggle. And he did have his struggles. But it's
- 23:55Speaker 3: hard for a guy who is that great to teach
- 24:00Speaker 3: somebody else. Okay, you can work with them and try
- 24:04Speaker 3: to help them, but it's hard to teach him what
- 24:08Speaker 3: you know. That would be like Nolan Ryan. Okay, let
- 24:11Speaker 3: me teach you how to throw a fastball. Okay. Uh,
- 24:15Speaker 3: Nolan knows how to do it and he can help
- 24:18Speaker 3: you with it, but it would be really difficult for him.
- 24:23Speaker 3: And I'm glad you brought it up, Drukas. Actually he's
- 24:28Speaker 3: he's going to join us this afternoon on Sportstock.
- 24:30Speaker 1: Okay, I'm jealous. I'm jealous.
- 24:33Speaker 3: Yeah, he's he's coming on it at five thirty. Glad
- 24:38Speaker 3: glad to have him on. And he's, uh, he's been
- 24:41Speaker 3: working out, you know, in California with Saints quarterbacks and receivers.
- 24:49Speaker 2: Oh wow, all right, Mike Detillier will have Drew Brees
- 24:52Speaker 2: on w w L Radio, New Orleans Mike d Afternoon Drive,
- 24:57Speaker 2: and that's cool. We've I interviewed some cool people. But
- 25:01Speaker 2: the fact that Mike's interviewed Drew Brees one hundred times
- 25:04Speaker 2: or whatever, I'm jealous. Okay, So with Drew year one,
- 25:10Speaker 2: they got the NFC Championship game. When did you know,
- 25:13Speaker 2: Mike D that the thing was cooking? When were you
- 25:17Speaker 2: sitting up there in the press box or on WWL
- 25:20Speaker 2: where you said, holy smokes, this team could do something
- 25:23Speaker 2: really special.
- 25:24Speaker 1: In year one of Drew and Shawn.
- 25:28Speaker 3: The first couple of games that was like, okay, there's
- 25:31Speaker 3: some momentum on this team. Really didn't know how good
- 25:35Speaker 3: they were. They had twenty nine new players on a
- 25:39Speaker 3: fifty three man roster. The thick of that, you know,
- 25:44Speaker 3: it was a new coaching staff. We didn't know a
- 25:48Speaker 3: lot about Sean Payton and his coaching staff, and it
- 25:53Speaker 3: was sort of a get to know in year one.
- 25:56Speaker 3: But I would take midway into the season he started
- 26:00Speaker 3: to have the feeling this team was really good. And
- 26:06Speaker 3: I had good thoughts early on that they could run
- 26:09Speaker 3: the ball because you know, with that combination in the
- 26:13Speaker 3: backfield of Luce McAllister and Reggie Bush, that was really dynamic.
- 26:21Speaker 3: The surprise was Marcus Colston was a seventh round pick
- 26:27Speaker 3: and what he was able to do in year one.
- 26:31Speaker 3: Their offensive line played really well. The defense it was
- 26:37Speaker 3: kind of a thrown together unit and Gary Gary Gibbs
- 26:42Speaker 3: did a really good job of coordinating that defense. But
- 26:48Speaker 3: I would say it was probably midway into the season,
- 26:51Speaker 3: because I mean, there are people always put this buy
- 26:54Speaker 3: in the sky stuff, but early on you really didn't
- 27:00Speaker 3: know because there were so many new elements to this
- 27:05Speaker 3: football team and how would it stay together? You know, Okay,
- 27:10Speaker 3: they got off to a hot start, but would it
- 27:12Speaker 3: be able to sustain this midway into the season. Now
- 27:17Speaker 3: Drew's cooking, they got a running game, and you saying, hey,
- 27:22Speaker 3: you know, they might be pretty dull going good here,
- 27:25Speaker 3: and sure enough to think that that team that had
- 27:30Speaker 3: won three games the year before, you know, goes to
- 27:33Speaker 3: the NFC Championship game. I always told this to coach Peyton.
- 27:38Speaker 3: It was the greatest coaching job he ever did in
- 27:41Speaker 3: New Orleans. It was the very best when you have
- 27:45Speaker 3: that many new plays players on a team and piecing
- 27:49Speaker 3: that all together. I used this term two days ago
- 27:54Speaker 3: when somebody asked me to describe it I said it
- 27:57Speaker 3: was the first NFL nil to get deep into playoffs,
- 28:03Speaker 3: because you think about twenty nine of fifty three, when
- 28:08Speaker 3: you guys, that's a chunk. And boy it worked, and man,
- 28:15Speaker 3: they started to believe in themselves and started to believe
- 28:19Speaker 3: in Drew. And you had a really dynamic backfield with
- 28:24Speaker 3: Druce McAllister in his prime along with Reggie Bush.
- 28:29Speaker 2: What Mike Ntilier has been covering the Saints for forty years,
- 28:33Speaker 2: He joins us on the Out of Bound show. Drew
- 28:34Speaker 2: brees first ballot Hall of Famer. Y'all know, he brought
- 28:38Speaker 2: the Lombardi Trophy to New Orleans Super Bowl, Sean Drew
- 28:42Speaker 2: and so many others. And as Drew said in the
- 28:45Speaker 2: audio that we dropped earlier, he realized that he was
- 28:49Speaker 2: going to be a part of the resurrection of one
- 28:51Speaker 2: of America's greatest cities. And the rest is history. Football
- 28:55Speaker 2: drove it, Culinary drove it, Mike lived it, and people
- 28:59Speaker 2: rallied and it was just it was increasing. They went
- 29:02Speaker 2: to the NFC Championship game in year one. Mike, what
- 29:05Speaker 2: was that first home playoff game? Like, I think against
- 29:08Speaker 2: the Eagles in the.
- 29:10Speaker 3: Supernow, yeah, man, it was a crazy atmosphere. We were
- 29:14Speaker 3: doing pre game outside. Okay, at that time in Man,
- 29:20Speaker 3: the fans was some revved up about it, and the
- 29:24Speaker 3: Eagles came in here with a would have bad to
- 29:26Speaker 3: the bone defense. They were really good and that game,
- 29:30Speaker 3: the one thing I remember was Deuce. I mean he
- 29:34Speaker 3: sort of put that team on his back late and
- 29:38Speaker 3: he carried him through running the football. He was fantastic
- 29:42Speaker 3: in that game. But the atmosphere was electric. No matter
- 29:49Speaker 3: because I parked, somebody actually drove me to the game.
- 29:55Speaker 3: So we actually parked about a block and a half
- 29:59Speaker 3: away from the dome and I had to walk, you know,
- 30:03Speaker 3: to where we did three k man, you got stopped,
- 30:07Speaker 3: like every two steps stop, two steps stopped. People were
- 30:12Speaker 3: all excited. They were some thrilled that the Saints were,
- 30:19Speaker 3: you know, in the playoffs, had an opportunity. The day before,
- 30:26Speaker 3: the NBC Nightly News did a segment on the Saints
- 30:31Speaker 3: and I got interviewed for it, and I'm like, man,
- 30:35Speaker 3: NBC Nightly News doing a story on the Saints, and
- 30:39Speaker 3: it went to show that, you know, I think the win,
- 30:45Speaker 3: the winning ways that the Saints got for many people
- 30:49Speaker 3: who suffered devastating losses in Katrina. It was sort of
- 30:55Speaker 3: the look beyond. You know, hey, look we difficult times,
- 31:02Speaker 3: and it gave them some relief. And I think every
- 31:06Speaker 3: player that talked to you back then said the same thing,
- 31:09Speaker 3: that they knew they were playing for something bigger than
- 31:14Speaker 3: just a football game. You were playing for a community
- 31:17Speaker 3: that had really been devastated in many ways, and they
- 31:23Speaker 3: wanted to give everything they had to them to give
- 31:25Speaker 3: to make them happy for a little while. And then
- 31:28Speaker 3: you know, you have to go home and try to
- 31:31Speaker 3: rebuild everything. So it was. It was a crazy time.
- 31:35Speaker 3: And you know, I live sixty miles south and to
- 31:40Speaker 3: the west of New Orleans. The community I live in,
- 31:46Speaker 3: we didn't really have a much damage done for Katrina
- 31:51Speaker 3: at all. It goes to show what you know with
- 31:53Speaker 3: a hurricane, how you know you're just living a little
- 31:57Speaker 3: bit away in how it doesn't affect you. Now, Ida
- 32:00Speaker 3: was a different story. We got I got a direct
- 32:03Speaker 3: hit from Mida, But Katrina, we didn't get that. Here
- 32:07Speaker 3: on the Bayou at all, are very little of it.
- 32:11Speaker 3: And yet the New Orleans and Medicie community really really
- 32:15Speaker 3: caught it. And when the levees broke, that was unbelievable. Devastation.
- 32:20Speaker 3: No matter where you passed. You know, there were furniture
- 32:24Speaker 3: in people's you know, stuff inside their home that were outside.
- 32:29Speaker 3: You know, it was damaged and you didn't have it anymore.
- 32:33Speaker 3: He lost it. So many people lost everything with it,
- 32:36Speaker 3: and I think the players felt that that. You know, hey, listen,
- 32:39Speaker 3: we planned for something a lot bigger than a football game.
- 32:44Speaker 2: Mike Detilier WWL Radio on the Farm Bureau Insurance guest Line.
- 32:51Speaker 2: He's sharing stories of the resurrection of one of America's
- 32:57Speaker 2: greatest cities, New Orleans, post Katrina, and what Drew Brees
- 33:01Speaker 2: and Sean Payton, among many many others did for the city.
- 33:05Speaker 2: Drew's going into the Pro Football Hall of Fame on
- 33:07Speaker 2: August eighth, and who that nation will be partying on
- 33:12Speaker 2: that Saturday. Mike, if you could pinpoint one thing that
- 33:16Speaker 2: this is hard to do because he did so many things. Well,
- 33:20Speaker 2: but you've been around NFL people for forty years. If
- 33:24Speaker 2: you could pinpoint one thing that made Drew Brees the
- 33:29Speaker 2: quarterback that he is, what.
- 33:32Speaker 3: Was it his passion for the game. I mean, I've
- 33:38Speaker 3: been around a lot of athletes, but very few of
- 33:42Speaker 3: them had his passion for what he did. I mean
- 33:48Speaker 3: he put everything he had in. He was super competitive.
- 33:54Speaker 3: This was after a practice one time they had a
- 33:56Speaker 3: little dunk tank and so everybody would sit on that
- 34:03Speaker 3: little stool the way to get dunked, and Drew and
- 34:06Speaker 3: some of the other quarterbacks came over and man Drew
- 34:10Speaker 3: was competitive with that. He missed it the first time completely,
- 34:16Speaker 3: you know, he missed that big section that hit. But
- 34:21Speaker 3: that was the last time he missed it. He missed
- 34:23Speaker 3: it once. Everything else, if you were sitting on there,
- 34:27Speaker 3: you got dunked because he was so upset that he
- 34:33Speaker 3: had missed it the first time, and after that, if
- 34:38Speaker 3: you were sitting up there, you were getting with He
- 34:43Speaker 3: was not gonna he was not gonna miss it, and
- 34:46Speaker 3: so he you know, that was him. He was super
- 34:49Speaker 3: passionate about it and he was listen. I think the
- 34:55Speaker 3: one thing that gets overlooked is how talented an athlete
- 34:58Speaker 3: he is. Right he was. He's a tremendous athlete. Plays
- 35:03Speaker 3: pickleball today, plays left handed because he can't really lift
- 35:07Speaker 3: his right his right arm up anymore. So he learned
- 35:11Speaker 3: how to play golf and pickleball and over his left hand,
- 35:15Speaker 3: which is just amazing. But it goes to show. Uh,
- 35:19Speaker 3: you know how Drew Brees is as a competitor, and
- 35:24Speaker 3: there's nothing you know, if you challenge him, you you
- 35:28Speaker 3: in for quite a battle. You might beat him, but
- 35:32Speaker 3: you in for quite a battle to do it. And
- 35:34Speaker 3: that and I think he takes that now into being
- 35:38Speaker 3: a businessman that you know, he's competitive out there and
- 35:43Speaker 3: and he you know, he's involved in so many things
- 35:45Speaker 3: locally here and also out in California. But I would
- 35:50Speaker 3: say his passion for the game is the one thing
- 35:53Speaker 3: that drives him because you know what, all his life
- 35:56Speaker 3: people told him you're not big enough. That's right, and
- 36:00Speaker 3: it sticks in his head. It's a great tennis player.
- 36:03Speaker 3: He's a really good golfer. He talked, you know, he
- 36:07Speaker 3: talked to us last year about this for quite some time.
- 36:11Speaker 3: We did a show at Manning's Children's Hospital and Archie
- 36:18Speaker 3: recalled him giving Drew an award as the best quarterback
- 36:23Speaker 3: in the state of Texas, and Drew started to go
- 36:27Speaker 3: off on the fact he grew up a Texas Aggie fan.
- 36:30Speaker 3: He wanted to play for Texas A and M. They
- 36:34Speaker 3: never offered him. Same thing at University of Texas never
- 36:39Speaker 3: offered him. And I think you if you listened, you
- 36:45Speaker 3: can almost hear that I'm gonna show you. I'm gonna
- 36:49Speaker 3: show you just how good I am. And he did
- 36:52Speaker 3: go to Purdue. It and he says, now it was
- 36:55Speaker 3: you know, it's the best thing to happen. I tell
- 36:56Speaker 3: her day Bear all the time. Okay. He was a
- 36:59Speaker 3: one year quarterback in high school and he wanted to
- 37:03Speaker 3: go to LSU. His dad was a huge LSU fan
- 37:06Speaker 3: and he wanted to go to LSU to play. LSU
- 37:08Speaker 3: never offered him. He was the last scholarship given to
- 37:12Speaker 3: Northwestern State and Louisiana. He went there and he got
- 37:15Speaker 3: mentored by Joe Ferguson, former Arkansas play in the NFL
- 37:20Speaker 3: for years with Buffalo. That would have never happened had
- 37:24Speaker 3: he went to LSU. And sometimes God put you in
- 37:27Speaker 3: the right place, right time, and for Drew, he was
- 37:31Speaker 3: right place, right time to go to Purdue. They threw
- 37:34Speaker 3: the football a tremendous amount and it honed his craft
- 37:40Speaker 3: as a passer. And you know, then the other things
- 37:44Speaker 3: that happened with the shoulder injury, and you know that
- 37:48Speaker 3: they had to make the decision, and he knew politically
- 37:52Speaker 3: when you look at it, that when you picked Philip
- 37:55Speaker 3: Rivers as high as they did, and you know you
- 37:58Speaker 3: weren't going to stay. You were going to have to
- 38:00Speaker 3: go somewhere else. And the fact that Miami's doctors, Randy
- 38:06Speaker 3: Mullers told us the story numerous times. He was there.
- 38:09Speaker 3: He was the GM for Nick Saban. Randy's a consultant
- 38:14Speaker 3: now with the Saints, but wasn't for a GM there
- 38:16Speaker 3: with the Saints, and he talked about, you know, doctor
- 38:21Speaker 3: stole him. We can't guarantee anything, and so they made
- 38:25Speaker 3: the decision to sort of move on, and that that
- 38:31Speaker 3: changed the course of two teams dramatically, the Dolphins and
- 38:37Speaker 3: then certainly changed the team with the Saints. And then
- 38:40Speaker 3: what he did for University of Alabama, what happened there
- 38:46Speaker 3: sort of change the outlook all the way across the board,
- 38:50Speaker 3: so you know, kind of the one domino hit the
- 38:54Speaker 3: next domino to get you out. But you know, Drew again,
- 38:58Speaker 3: his impact on the team, he's the There probably were
- 39:03Speaker 3: players that were, you know, from a talent standpoint, as
- 39:06Speaker 3: talented as Drew, but the impact he had for this community,
- 39:12Speaker 3: this team, I'm not going to live long enough to
- 39:16Speaker 3: see another one like him.
- 39:17Speaker 2: Me neither well that was that was incredible right there,
- 39:23Speaker 2: over twenty minutes on Drew Brees' first ballot Pro Football
- 39:29Speaker 2: Hall of Famer, Super Bowl Lombardi Trophy winner for New
- 39:34Speaker 2: Orleans and as Mike I've asked Mike this before, he
- 39:37Speaker 2: is the number one dude in Nororlan, Saints history, and Louisiana.
- 39:41Speaker 2: And that's counting a bunch of unbelievable players in both
- 39:44Speaker 2: the Saints and LSU. But he's he's the number one dude.
- 39:48Speaker 2: And man, there's gonna be a lot of tears in
- 39:53Speaker 2: a good way on August eighth, as people watch Sean
- 39:57Speaker 2: Payton introducing him and Drew talk about his journey.
- 40:02Speaker 3: Yeah, it's okay. Everybody's journey is different in the NFL
- 40:08Speaker 3: that there, you know, there's so many great stories. But
- 40:11Speaker 3: you know, people say, you know, what's the one thing
- 40:14Speaker 3: you take away from Drew and what he did for
- 40:17Speaker 3: the city, in the community and for the who that
- 40:20Speaker 3: nations all great, but if you really want to see
- 40:23Speaker 3: what type of impact he is, walk with him for
- 40:26Speaker 3: a little while somewhere and you and you feel like
- 40:32Speaker 3: a cheap watch to stop every few seconds, you can't
- 40:39Speaker 3: take two steps, and then you you know, somebody's stopping
- 40:44Speaker 3: taking a picture of autograph and all that, and he's
- 40:47Speaker 3: he's so good about, you know, doing all those things,
- 40:50Speaker 3: and especially with kids and all he you know, and uh,
- 40:54Speaker 3: you know, and I think he's an inspiration that you
- 40:57Speaker 3: don't have to be that six foot for two hundred.
- 41:01Speaker 1: No doubt. What about Mike D. That was awesome.
- 41:06Speaker 2: You crushed it. Thank you so much. We may do
- 41:10Speaker 2: two or three more hits on Drew Brees before August eighth.
- 41:13Speaker 1: Have a great week, my man. Thank you, Mike D.
- 41:16Speaker 3: Thank you.
- 41:17Speaker 2: Appreciate at Mike Detilier on Twitter, was that good or what?
- 41:22Speaker 2: Twenty three minutes on the first ballot Pro Football Hall
- 41:25Speaker 2: of Famer number nine to you, Drew Brees.
