- 0:01It is common for spiritual aspirants to be advised to
- 0:05isolate themselves, or at least limit their contact with others
- 0:08in a social setting, with the ostensible reason to aid the
- 0:12seeker in focusing on the spiritual effort and avoid
- 0:16distraction and the possibility of being diverted or diluted in
- 0:21the energy through vital forces affecting the life.
- 0:25Many are told to cut off the influence of family and friends
- 0:30for similar reasons. Some require devotees to avoid
- 0:34any interaction with money as well, since it carries its own
- 0:39occult power. All of this presupposes that
- 0:42there is an enormous vital force at work through these contacts
- 0:47that can work to minimize or destroy the seeker's efforts.
- 0:53It is true that there can be a considerable impediment that
- 0:56arises through both the external impacts and the subtle internal
- 1:01operation of vital interchange that occurs.
- 1:04It is not, however, as automatic and as serious as it seems.
- 1:10When we learn about all the restrictions and separations.
- 1:14There are multiple factors that can determine the actual impact.
- 1:19First, there is the closeness of the bond between individuals,
- 1:23with the bonds of family, loved ones and close friends having
- 1:27potentially a greater impact due to the greater expected
- 1:33receptivity the seeker would have to such influences.
- 1:38Second, there is the intensity of the force that is trying to
- 1:42act. Most social interactions have a
- 1:46relatively weak force and thus tend to potentially create small
- 1:51waves in the being without having the impact of a vital
- 1:55tsunami. Third, there is the awareness
- 1:59and receptivity of the seeker himself.
- 2:02To the extent that he is focused, dedicated, and
- 2:06conscious, even a powerful vital force can be held at Bay.
- 2:12The seeker, therefore, should avoid fear of vital interaction
- 2:16and exercise conscious awareness and a focused aspiration towards
- 2:21achievement of the spiritual goals, and thereby not be too
- 2:25concerned about the influences. When a strong or hostile
- 2:30influence shows up, of course, it must then be seen and
- 2:34resisted, but this is a much less common occurrence.
- 2:39In fact, a good deal of the talk of isolation and separation is
- 2:44intended to gain control over the individual by those in
- 2:48charge of the cloister, monastery, ashram, or other type
- 2:53of organization, rather than a real concern about the spiritual
- 2:58impact of social interaction. And it must be noted that any
- 3:03progress that depends entirely on isolation is put into
- 3:08question when the individual eventually has to have
- 3:11interactions, as there has been no opportunity to strengthen and
- 3:16prepare the seeker for the forces at work in the world.
- 3:21There are numerous anecdotal examples of dramatic failures
- 3:25when the eventual confrontation with the world comes about in
- 3:29the life of the seeker, who has not had the seasoning that comes
- 3:33with learning about and addressing the impact of vital
- 3:37influences and forces along the way.
- 3:41Sri Aurobindo notes Quote It is not necessary to be so careful
- 3:47as all that ordinary vital interchanges are of a slight
- 3:52character. Nobody can take away another's
- 3:55vital for the very good reason that if that happened, the
- 3:59person from whom it was taken would die.
- 4:02It is possible, of course, for one person to drain another's
- 4:06vital forces so as to leave him limp or weak or dry, but it is
- 4:12only the vampire kind that do that.
- 4:15It is possible also for one to give out too much of one's vital
- 4:19forces, so as to weaken oneself or exhaust of energy, a thing
- 4:24which should not be done. It is only those who know how to
- 4:28draw or can draw freely from the universal vital force and
- 4:33replenish their life energies that can give out freely.
- 4:37All of course draw to some extent, otherwise they would not
- 4:41remain alive. For expenditure of vital energy
- 4:44is always going on and one has to replace it.
- 4:49But for the most the capacity for drawing is limited and the
- 4:54capacity for giving without exhaustion is also limited.
- 4:59But the ordinary movements of interchange are harmless,
- 5:03provided they are kept within moderate limits.
