- 1:10Speaker 1: we got a special guest in here, one of the greats,
- 1:12Speaker 1: Mickey Facts. What's up, keV? Can you tell the people?
- 1:16Speaker 1: Because I just saw you post your n y U
- 1:17Speaker 1: I D and I know you're teaching and you got
- 1:19Speaker 1: a lot going on. Yeah, yeah, you're like quite literally
- 1:22Speaker 1: teaching rap, right, teach rap?
- 1:26Speaker 2: So uh, something that I haven't told a lot of people.
- 1:30Speaker 2: Black Thought was teaching it for three years at YU
- 1:33Speaker 2: and nobody knew about to say, nobody knew and he
- 1:38Speaker 2: his schedule got a little hectic, so he put in
- 1:41Speaker 2: a good word along with one of my other friends,
- 1:43Speaker 2: Seawan Tatyro, so I took over the position. Wow and
- 1:49Speaker 2: h I fly in every Thursday to New York from
- 1:53Speaker 2: Atlanta to teach it.
- 1:55Speaker 1: Black Thought as a rap teacher is wild. The fact
- 1:59Speaker 1: that hasn't come out like a f I as a student,
- 2:01Speaker 1: I'd be like, yo, y'all have no idea. I walked
- 2:03Speaker 1: into class today, Professor Tarique is fucking Black Thought. Yeah.
- 2:09Speaker 1: I mean, I feel like if there's anybody, it'd be him,
- 2:12Speaker 1: I obviously yourself. I think Blue Bay could teach a
- 2:14Speaker 1: rap class, which he's doing. Oh wait, I didn't know that.
- 2:16Speaker 1: At John Hopkins, Jesus would say, you're teaching rap, like
- 2:20Speaker 1: what is like a lesson planned for you?
- 2:22Speaker 2: Lesson planning right now is fundamentals. So teaching them focal point,
- 2:26Speaker 2: which is like the word you used to rhyme perfect,
- 2:28Speaker 2: rhyme slant, rhyme, flow delivery, multi syllabic. And that's just
- 2:33Speaker 2: to kind of get the basics down. Then we start
- 2:35Speaker 2: looking at other MC's to kind of see what they
- 2:37Speaker 2: do so we can identify what they do, and then
- 2:40Speaker 2: from there we start to work on performances and then
- 2:43Speaker 2: the intricacies of lyricism and songwriting from.
- 2:46Speaker 1: That super sick. So you guys might be like, yo,
- 2:48Speaker 1: today we're gonna study Eminem.
- 2:50Speaker 2: Yes, and then we'll break down what he's doing, how
- 2:54Speaker 2: he's doing it, and how he's able to get his
- 2:56Speaker 2: thoughts across what uh?
- 2:57Speaker 1: What if? I don't know if you could share, but
- 2:59Speaker 1: what rappers have? Are? Are you gonna break down?
- 3:01Speaker 2: So I have a list of like one hundred right,
- 3:06Speaker 2: so I could start, So I try to keep it
- 3:11Speaker 2: post two thousand uh from a studying standpoint, and then
- 3:15Speaker 2: I like to keep it from a from an underground standpoint.
- 3:18Speaker 2: And then we also study some of the newer artists
- 3:21Speaker 2: as well. So you got to think if I if
- 3:23Speaker 2: I'm talking about previously, you know, we're talking Kanekouji rap
- 3:27Speaker 2: rock him, et cetera. Then you got the j Nah's big,
- 3:30Speaker 2: you know, the usual suspects everybody here us on the wall.
- 3:34Speaker 2: And then from a woman's standpoint, little Kim Salt and
- 3:36Speaker 2: Pepa et cetera, et cetera, et cetera. And then in
- 3:38Speaker 2: this era, you know, we make sure to cover the Rhapsodes,
- 3:41Speaker 2: the said Rocks, the uh Sahad, the princes and the
- 3:45Speaker 2: king Loses and those people. And then the newer artists
- 3:48Speaker 2: they have to you know, they have to present what
- 3:51Speaker 2: they see from the newer artists and how they're creating
- 3:54Speaker 2: and crafting this stuff. Right, So we got the Playboy
- 3:56Speaker 2: Carti stuff, we got some NBA young boy stuff quick
- 4:00Speaker 2: yeah yeah.
- 4:02Speaker 1: Lay Boy Cardi. What's up? So when you are talking
- 4:06Speaker 1: about his rapping, yeah, what is what do you take
- 4:10Speaker 1: away from? Like I just like you and the obviously
- 4:13Speaker 1: the kids probably love Cardi. The kids love Cardi. I
- 4:16Speaker 1: just like when it cuts as a rapper. Sometimes it's
- 4:22Speaker 1: a lot of aura, right, it's a lot of vibe.
- 4:24Speaker 1: It's it's a very punk rocket.
- 4:26Speaker 2: Everything that you're saying is literally what I take away
- 4:28Speaker 2: from it. So I say this, it's more of about
- 4:31Speaker 2: a vibe. I feel like Cardi, here's a beat, probably
- 4:35Speaker 2: gets lick it up and whatever drugs he's taken and
- 4:40Speaker 2: goes in and says whatever comes to his brain.
- 4:43Speaker 1: Do you have any redeeming qualities to give to the
- 4:45Speaker 1: students When you hear his music.
- 4:46Speaker 2: I think like, hey, you guys, this is how he
- 4:50Speaker 2: does it, and this is we just learn jay Z.
- 4:52Speaker 1: But this is what you could take from Playboy Cardi.
- 4:54Speaker 2: I think you could pull something from anybody, and I
- 4:57Speaker 2: think that what you can pull from Playboy Cardi from
- 4:59Speaker 2: that point is melodic rapping.
- 5:01Speaker 1: Right.
- 5:01Speaker 2: He does that at a high level. When you think
- 5:03Speaker 2: about and I say this respectfully, right, when you think
- 5:06Speaker 2: about high level MC's like a ransom or r J Payin, joelots,
- 5:10Speaker 2: any of these, they can't do what Cardi do.
- 5:12Speaker 1: They just can't do it.
- 5:14Speaker 2: And that's like, no, they can't do it because in
- 5:17Speaker 2: their brains. It's more about the lyrics and the writing
- 5:21Speaker 2: as opposed to the vibe and saying is less words.
- 5:25Speaker 1: Well, I think that's why I think Future is one
- 5:26Speaker 1: of the greatest of all time.
- 5:27Speaker 2: Yes, yes, I agree, I think Future, but you got
- 5:32Speaker 2: to also look at futures beginnings like he.
- 5:35Speaker 1: Was, and he's got due family still in his arms,
- 5:38Speaker 1: still in his arms.
- 5:39Speaker 2: He was going by Meathead paused and he was sounding
- 5:42Speaker 2: like Ludacris when he first came out.
- 5:44Speaker 1: I didn't know. I didn't. I haven't dug that deep.
- 5:46Speaker 1: I mean, that's why I'm here, That's why you're the future. Yes,
- 5:49Speaker 1: So he was rapping like Ludacris when he first came out.
- 5:52Speaker 1: Then he had to switch it up, and when he
- 5:53Speaker 1: started to when he found his lane and his groove,
- 5:56Speaker 1: then he started to morph into what we love. Now.
- 6:00Speaker 1: Is there an artist that's frustrating as an as you're
- 6:04Speaker 1: an MC's MC now you literally teach this right. Is
- 6:07Speaker 1: there somebody who you get frustrated listening to from the
- 6:10Speaker 1: newer generation? No? I don't.
- 6:14Speaker 2: I mean I think that there's people that I'd be
- 6:17Speaker 2: looking at. I'd be like, how did this person get
- 6:19Speaker 2: a situation or a scenario. But it's never to the
- 6:21Speaker 2: point where I get frustrated that like, Yo, what am
- 6:24Speaker 2: I listening to? I just try to pull the reason
- 6:27Speaker 2: people listen to it. I have to because I'm teaching.
- 6:30Speaker 1: No of course, and like you know, I feel like
- 6:32Speaker 1: there's at the end of the day, there's a market
- 6:34Speaker 1: for these these artists, even if you're not necessarily into
- 6:37Speaker 1: like a lot of you know, like a yeah.
- 6:41Speaker 2: I think that's I think what you just said is important, right,
- 6:43Speaker 2: there's a market for it. And if there's a market
- 6:45Speaker 2: for it, we as the people who run the school,
- 6:48Speaker 2: we have to we have to understand why there's a
- 6:51Speaker 2: market for it. Who is this market and what about
- 6:53Speaker 2: this person do these people like? And why you know
- 6:56Speaker 2: what I'm saying. So, like, I listen to it and
- 6:58Speaker 2: I try to pull the positive out of it so
- 7:00Speaker 2: I can understand it.
- 7:01Speaker 1: That's that's what I look at it. Could you give
- 7:03Speaker 1: me I take away album sales, throw throw discography out
- 7:08Speaker 1: right at the talent of rapping. Who do you think
- 7:15Speaker 1: is like in the conversation for like the greatest of
- 7:17Speaker 1: all time? I throw the legacy out. I'm not like
- 7:20Speaker 1: when people will be like, well, you know, the album sales.
- 7:23Speaker 1: They got to five Mike almrokill the skill of rapping.
- 7:27Speaker 1: That's it, that's it, loop A fiasco, damn. I that's
- 7:31Speaker 1: my number. Yes, And if anybody's questioning that should just
- 7:35Speaker 1: go listen to murals like nine minutes or just eleven?
- 7:39Speaker 1: Is it elevens is eleven minutes? Yeah, that would be
- 7:42Speaker 1: my choice. That would be my choice. I think it's
- 7:45Speaker 1: like in the discs, it's like loop A then like
- 7:49Speaker 1: black thought, it's loop A black thought. It might be
- 7:52Speaker 1: I might throw in ASoP rock in there, low key.
- 7:55Speaker 1: It's I mean, if were talking just skill set, like
- 7:57Speaker 1: I think Eminem is up there, Eminem will probably be
- 8:00Speaker 1: in there. I would put them there. I'm forgetting somebody
- 8:04Speaker 1: and it's gonna bother me. Hold on my brain's uh,
- 8:09Speaker 1: I don't know, man, I think when.
- 8:10Speaker 2: I'm not mad at NAS, true, I'm not mad at
- 8:14Speaker 2: Nas at all.
- 8:14Speaker 1: I think Nas. You're talking about a guy who first
- 8:18Speaker 1: came out ninety two. What do you think about Kendrick
- 8:20Speaker 1: in that?
- 8:21Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, Kendrick is in there. I put Kendrick in there,
- 8:23Speaker 2: but I don't think that quietly. Royce too, I would
- 8:27Speaker 2: have I would have Royce in there. I would have.
- 8:29Speaker 2: I would got to just throw his name in there.
- 8:32Speaker 2: I'm not mad at that, I think. But if if
- 8:35Speaker 2: you told me like three people, I would probably say
- 8:38Speaker 2: loop a thought, and then it will probably like the
- 8:43Speaker 2: third spot.
- 8:43Speaker 1: Can go to a few, go to a few.
- 8:45Speaker 2: People, but I don't have anybody higher than those two.
- 8:49Speaker 2: If you remove everything and just kind of just let
- 8:52Speaker 2: them wrap, yeah.
- 8:54Speaker 1: It's pretty tough. Yeah, I agree. I think I think
- 8:56Speaker 1: Lupe to me is the name I always go back to.
- 8:58Speaker 1: And it's crazy too, because it's like he's had this
- 9:01Speaker 1: like new like quiet run that he's on where he's
- 9:04Speaker 1: putting like the Samurai shit. It's so crazy like conceptually,
- 9:07Speaker 1: and it's.
- 9:07Speaker 2: Like but I think when you look at when you
- 9:09Speaker 2: look at stuff like that, right, like you have to
- 9:10Speaker 2: look at it like, Okay, he's implementing his lifestyle into
- 9:14Speaker 2: the art and.
- 9:14Speaker 1: It's so fat and it's just like, yeah, yeah, I
- 9:17Speaker 1: think Loupe when we talk about the the Greats is
- 9:20Speaker 1: like it's like almost like if Atlantic hadn't like frustrated
- 9:26Speaker 1: him so much with the industry and like made him
- 9:28Speaker 1: hate it, you know, it's like what could have been
- 9:31Speaker 1: The first two albums were so crazy it was a
- 9:33Speaker 1: gift in the curse.
- 9:34Speaker 2: They saw they saw the success of Superstar and it
- 9:39Speaker 2: was like, oh you did that.
- 9:40Speaker 1: Oh well, then baby, you could do this too. Here's
- 9:43Speaker 1: a Trey song took.
- 9:44Speaker 2: Right, and here's you know, here's all of this stuff
- 9:47Speaker 2: that eventually went to Bob and he was probably like,
- 9:49Speaker 2: get the fuck out of here, Like I did this
- 9:51Speaker 2: because this was me and my man and we made
- 9:53Speaker 2: it work.
- 9:54Speaker 1: Hey, we got to stop the interview to tell you
- 9:55Speaker 1: about our good folks, odd Socks. Man. Now, these are
- 9:58Speaker 1: the odd Socks basics, ladies and jai them. And now
- 10:00Speaker 1: when I tell you this is a product that every
- 10:04Speaker 1: single day I'm alive for the last five six years
- 10:09Speaker 1: I have used are these odd socks Basics. Now, what
- 10:12Speaker 1: odd Socks is doing is they're kind of reinventing the
- 10:14Speaker 1: sock game, if we're being honest, and the underwear game.
- 10:16Speaker 1: You know, a lot of times you'll hit Walmart, you'll
- 10:18Speaker 1: hit Target, you'll get some socks, you get some draws.
- 10:21Speaker 1: They're affordable, they end up with holes in them, they
- 10:24Speaker 1: don't really feel great. Not odd socks, ladies and gentlemen.
- 10:27Speaker 1: These odd Socks Basics are the most comfortable socks I've
- 10:30Speaker 1: ever had on my feet. Not only that, but you're
- 10:34Speaker 1: super affordable fourteen ninety nine for a six pack. That's it,
- 10:39Speaker 1: oddsocks dot Com. And if you don't believe me, sock
- 10:44Speaker 1: check full. Wait that's the ex is on the other side.
- 10:48Speaker 1: There we go. Ah, you see that. Sorry you had
- 10:52Speaker 1: to see those white legs. But it's so dope that,
- 10:56Speaker 1: you know, I get to push a product that I
- 10:58Speaker 1: use and that I love, so odd socks they got
- 11:01Speaker 1: the six pack socks for fourteen ninety nine at odd
- 11:03Speaker 1: socks dot com. The basics, this is the future of socks,
- 11:07Speaker 1: the future of underwear comfort and affordability. I'm talking about
- 11:12Speaker 1: affordability without jeopardizing the quality because they are the most
- 11:15Speaker 1: comfortable socks you ever put on your feet. Ladies and
- 11:17Speaker 1: gents and the ETCeteras. Got to show love to the ETCeteras.
- 11:21Speaker 1: We like all the stripes on the flag. There are
- 11:24Speaker 1: odd socks dot com. Man, much love to my brothers
- 11:26Speaker 1: over there. Make sure you get some right now, odd
- 11:28Speaker 1: socks dot com. Let's get back to the interview when
- 11:31Speaker 1: you were in the like cause you're quite literally like
- 11:34Speaker 1: a found foundational member of what we would call blog
- 11:38Speaker 1: era rap. Yes, Uh, you were probably one of the
- 11:42Speaker 1: first names I think I really kind of found online
- 11:44Speaker 1: because you know, for people who don't know, you had
- 11:46Speaker 1: kicked off like this weekly thing where you were dropping
- 11:49Speaker 1: music every week, which was like new. Yeah, nobody was
- 11:52Speaker 1: doing after you. Crooked I did it. No, so Crooked
- 11:54Speaker 1: I Cricket I do it. Okay.
- 11:56Speaker 2: He did freestyles first in the middle of two thousand
- 11:58Speaker 2: and seven.
- 11:59Speaker 1: So so he was doing the weekly shit, the weekly freestyles, okay,
- 12:04Speaker 1: but you were dropping like original songs.
- 12:05Speaker 2: I was dropping the original songs started in January once
- 12:08Speaker 2: a week. That shit was unheard of.
- 12:09Speaker 1: Did you ever get because there was like that the
- 12:12Speaker 1: blog era was very interesting because you had like a
- 12:16Speaker 1: guy like Bob who was like a blog era Darling yep,
- 12:20Speaker 1: and I had amazing mixtapes and for whatever reason, it
- 12:25Speaker 1: just felt like he just was like hitting the ceiling
- 12:28Speaker 1: at the label or whatever. And then he gets to
- 12:30Speaker 1: the Brunal Mars record and you know, yeah, kind of
- 12:33Speaker 1: the director of his career change with j Cole's kind
- 12:35Speaker 1: of in that same vein too. Ye. Were you ever like,
- 12:40Speaker 1: did they ever try to force feed you, like because
- 12:41Speaker 1: I had you had a major deal. Yeah, I was
- 12:44Speaker 1: with did they try to force feed you, like, uh No,
- 12:47Speaker 1: I came in there with the singles like yo, we
- 12:49Speaker 1: got this hook from.
- 12:50Speaker 2: I came in there with those records. Ah, so it
- 12:54Speaker 2: was different from me.
- 12:55Speaker 1: Were you like a tail end to drive existing Yes? Crazy,
- 12:58Speaker 1: That's why I never got the hit record.
- 13:02Speaker 2: So like I came in there with the big records,
- 13:04Speaker 2: they were like, oh shit, we don't have to give
- 13:06Speaker 2: this guy the stuff because he has it already. And
- 13:09Speaker 2: then their issue was, Okay, this guy is known as
- 13:13Speaker 2: the rapper, how do we take him from being the
- 13:15Speaker 2: rapper to doing this type of music? And as they
- 13:17Speaker 2: were figuring it out, the label folds. So I went
- 13:23Speaker 2: from like they were getting ready to push the button.
- 13:25Speaker 2: The first single that well, Paradise did really well. We
- 13:29Speaker 2: got bdspins that charted, and then we had the Martian
- 13:33Speaker 2: and Brochure record for the Culture. As soon as they
- 13:35Speaker 2: were getting ready to impact the label, literally, Foald Barry
- 13:39Speaker 2: Weis's left like he didn't even tell anybody, He just
- 13:42Speaker 2: kind of left. He was like I took this job
- 13:43Speaker 2: at a death jam and then that was it. One
- 13:46Speaker 2: day he was at work at job, next day he
- 13:47Speaker 2: was at year.
- 13:49Speaker 1: This was twenty eleven. Damn.
- 13:51Speaker 2: So so you think, okay, I had the records, I
- 13:55Speaker 2: sat at, I was well, the entire label was defunct.
- 14:02Speaker 2: So me, Chris Brown, R Kelly, all of us, Britney Spears,
- 14:07Speaker 2: Britney Spears justin Tiberla like all of us. We didn't
- 14:10Speaker 2: have a home for like five months. And then eventually
- 14:13Speaker 2: Sony came because again he just left. So Sony came
- 14:15Speaker 2: in and it was like, okay, we're going to purchase. Uh,
- 14:19Speaker 2: some artists are going to go to EPIC and then
- 14:21Speaker 2: some artists are going to go to RCA. So some
- 14:25Speaker 2: people got dropped, like Diamond from Crime Moms, she got dropped, right,
- 14:29Speaker 2: I got moved to RCAA. So I had a brand
- 14:31Speaker 2: new deal. So with this new deal, I had a
- 14:33Speaker 2: brand new an R. I had a brand new project manager.
- 14:35Speaker 2: I had a brand new.
- 14:36Speaker 1: All these people aren't people who like found you, so
- 14:38Speaker 1: they're not invested in it.
- 14:39Speaker 2: And if you don't have the catalog or if you
- 14:41Speaker 2: don't have the names, because for them it's numbers and
- 14:44Speaker 2: it's about Yeah.
- 14:44Speaker 1: They're like, well why we want to Like fuck, how
- 14:47Speaker 1: motivated can be to break an artist that you don't
- 14:49Speaker 1: really that you weren't a part of bringing into the building.
- 14:52Speaker 2: Right, So what I had to do I had to
- 14:56Speaker 2: make all new records because Jive, as you know, it
- 14:59Speaker 2: was a pop it was pop label. The only the
- 15:01Speaker 2: only rappers on there was me, the Clips, and Diamond
- 15:06Speaker 2: from Com.
- 15:08Speaker 1: Left.
- 15:08Speaker 2: By then forty forty was going, so it was uh
- 15:13Speaker 2: too short, too short he was going. So it was
- 15:16Speaker 2: only like three rappers. So I wanted to do the
- 15:18Speaker 2: pop ship. I wanted to be in pop. I wanted
- 15:21Speaker 2: pop money.
- 15:22Speaker 1: I had the Clips Drive shirt from like that era,
- 15:25Speaker 1: well that was from way earlier than that. Fuck yeah
- 15:28Speaker 1: that was like that was like I bought it on
- 15:30Speaker 1: Mixed Unit dot com.
- 15:31Speaker 2: Yeah, so I had to call some favors and so
- 15:35Speaker 2: I called the Yellow Wolf.
- 15:36Speaker 1: I called up Bruno and this is before he did.
- 15:40Speaker 2: The record with No Uh yeah, this is like right
- 15:43Speaker 2: after he did the record with d Ob. So I
- 15:45Speaker 2: had a Bruno record, I had a John Legend record,
- 15:48Speaker 2: but they still wasn't trying to push the button damn.
- 15:51Speaker 2: So I was just like, all right, well listen, it's
- 15:53Speaker 2: time for me to go.
- 15:55Speaker 1: Who who do you think is like? Because I do
- 15:57Speaker 1: feel like there was so many dope artists at that
- 16:00Speaker 1: era that like for whatever reason. I think a guy's
- 16:03Speaker 1: like Pill and Charles Hamilton and Ruggin. There's just so
- 16:07Speaker 1: many incredible artists that just XV was crazy. Zero Heroes
- 16:11Speaker 1: is insane. But who do you think was kind of
- 16:14Speaker 1: like one of the products of that era of music
- 16:17Speaker 1: that just for whatever reason you felt like, you know,
- 16:21Speaker 1: should have been bigger. Didn't that necessarily hit the way
- 16:24Speaker 1: that a lot of you know, the peers did. I'd
- 16:30Speaker 1: probably say myself, if you I mean, obviously take yourself
- 16:33Speaker 1: out of.
- 16:33Speaker 2: There, If I take myself out of the conversation. I
- 16:38Speaker 2: think I think Fred rest in peace for the God.
- 16:41Speaker 2: He was on his way, you know. I think with
- 16:43Speaker 2: him in thirty eight special was doing right before he
- 16:46Speaker 2: passed away in the pandemic, I think was he was
- 16:48Speaker 2: finally kind of getting that love.
- 16:52Speaker 1: Ace hood.
- 16:53Speaker 2: I think he got a bad deal when people started
- 16:55Speaker 2: taking his flow.
- 16:56Speaker 1: You think you you correlate with the blog era though, Yeah,
- 17:00Speaker 1: he was on got He was like, yeah, that is true.
- 17:03Speaker 1: He was on that cover. Was oh my god, he
- 17:06Speaker 1: was on the cover. He was on the cover, and
- 17:08Speaker 1: Motheruckers was like, why is it? Acewood is crazy? By
- 17:11Speaker 1: the way, super Fire shout out to a but he's
- 17:13Speaker 1: got some records, yeah he had, but no, he has
- 17:17Speaker 1: he has big records. Yeah.
- 17:18Speaker 2: I think the issue was people took his flow after
- 17:21Speaker 2: he had those hits, and.
- 17:22Speaker 1: Then it was yeah he's had some joints, man, big joints,
- 17:27Speaker 1: and like he's like quietly built up, like a dope
- 17:29Speaker 1: independent catalogs. He has a great following. Yeah, he's got it,
- 17:33Speaker 1: like real locked in following. Yeah. I mean a lot
- 17:35Speaker 1: of it is you know, fitness, A lot of it
- 17:37Speaker 1: is great music too. Who always on this cover? I'm
- 17:40Speaker 1: trying to remember it was that there, Me Cuddy, Yeah,
- 17:46Speaker 1: Charles Jesus, Corey, Corey probably it was crazy. Corey probably
- 17:51Speaker 1: should have been.
- 17:52Speaker 2: Corey was so tough, Bob Currency, who's cooking, Yeah, cooking
- 17:58Speaker 2: Cuddy mm hmm.
- 18:00Speaker 1: Yeah, that's that's a crazy that was because that was
- 18:02Speaker 1: the second one, right, because the first one was like
- 18:04Speaker 1: Joel er T's Crooked Eye and Blue and Blue. Yeah,
- 18:08Speaker 1: you know, j Leg was supposed to be on the cover. Damn,
- 18:12Speaker 1: he he was on sold most death. I haven't I'm
- 18:16Speaker 1: not gonna lie. He put out all that new music.
- 18:19Speaker 1: I listened to the first like piece, and I haven't
- 18:22Speaker 1: just had time to because I like, I feel like
- 18:24Speaker 1: I need to like sit down. I'm like, yeah, I
- 18:27Speaker 1: saw somebody's I liked it, but if somebody felt like
- 18:30Speaker 1: somebody said it sound it felt like an audiobook. Yeah,
- 18:33Speaker 1: I thought it was cool what I heard. But I
- 18:36Speaker 1: feel like it's so crazy that a single song exhibits
- 18:40Speaker 1: C can be so great that like a Damn Near,
- 18:44Speaker 1: like it's it's it pushed him into this like shadowy
- 18:50Speaker 1: mythical figure of music. Yes, and like the album dropped.
- 18:56Speaker 1: It was like damn Near a co album with jay
- 18:58Speaker 1: Z every the name of the album. It was cool
- 19:00Speaker 1: written testimony fucking exhibit It's like Exhibit C is such
- 19:04Speaker 1: a that was.
- 19:04Speaker 2: Just Blaze, but you know, just just said that he
- 19:08Speaker 2: had an album full of those, because you know they
- 19:10Speaker 2: did an album and it's like, just what are you doing, bro,
- 19:14Speaker 2: like because this is at his height, because you know,
- 19:15Speaker 2: they did Exhibit A, then they had Exhibit C, and
- 19:18Speaker 2: then and then that same radio station he played Exhibit
- 19:21Speaker 2: B with fucking most death listen.
- 19:24Speaker 1: Man, I was just Blaze was making more beats right now. Yeah,
- 19:29Speaker 1: he only makes sinc beats. Me and Alchemist were talking
- 19:32Speaker 1: about this and he was like, yo, like if just
- 19:35Speaker 1: really just tapped, like got focused for like a year.
- 19:39Speaker 1: He could just do collap albums because I was kind
- 19:41Speaker 1: of showing, like showIn everybody the way right now.
- 19:44Speaker 2: I think just me and Just had the same We
- 19:48Speaker 2: had the same booking agent for a while.
- 19:51Speaker 1: He got into the ed M space.
- 19:54Speaker 2: He los video games, he's a gamer, and he just said,
- 19:59Speaker 2: I think he just got tired. He was like, nah,
- 20:01Speaker 2: because I remember after I did the album with Knots,
- 20:04Speaker 2: he came to the album release party. He was like, Yo,
- 20:06Speaker 2: I'm down to do a collab album, and then I
- 20:09Speaker 2: never heard from Just again.
- 20:11Speaker 1: He's probably my favorite. He has a collab listen, listen
- 20:15Speaker 1: to these names. He has collab albums with that I
- 20:17Speaker 1: know of that are just sitting on hard drives. Jay Electronica,
- 20:21Speaker 1: he has an El's Eye album. Els is one of
- 20:24Speaker 1: the ones man shout to Detroit, Shoutson. He has an
- 20:26Speaker 1: Elsie album. Bro. He's actually another guy that I would
- 20:29Speaker 1: actually might be in that combo. He's yeah, yeah, definitely,
- 20:34Speaker 1: I put damn. He has an Elsie album Bro. That's wild.
- 20:40Speaker 2: And you know, Just is one of the best producers
- 20:42Speaker 2: you know ever. Yeah, and he just refuses.
- 20:45Speaker 1: He just refuses Yeah, it's kind of wild. You would
- 20:48Speaker 1: think like we'd get like a just blaze beat on
- 20:50Speaker 1: a Kendrick album or fucking something I forgot. I feel
- 20:54Speaker 1: like the last great like big just blaze beat. I
- 20:57Speaker 1: could think of what was on the Drake album? Was
- 21:01Speaker 1: it Tusking leather? Didn't he do that? Did he do
- 21:04Speaker 1: Tusking level on My Tripping? He did a he did
- 21:08Speaker 1: something on that show. The last beat that he did
- 21:11Speaker 1: was Kirk Franklin and Little Baby See. I don't want
- 21:14Speaker 1: to hear that ship. The beat was unbelievable. I want
- 21:16Speaker 1: to just hear the beat. That's all I want to hear.
- 21:18Speaker 1: I just want to hear instrumental. The beat was on
- 21:20Speaker 1: the record. Beat was bonkers, you know.
- 21:24Speaker 2: You know the interesting thing about So just just gave
- 21:27Speaker 2: me a beat and.
- 21:30Speaker 1: I put Jilla Jones on it. My guy right here.
- 21:33Speaker 2: And the song is called Pendulum And that's where we
- 21:35Speaker 2: started our school.
- 21:36Speaker 1: Pendulum man, that's crazy. Yes, and we did that. He
- 21:40Speaker 1: gave me that beat twenty fifteen, Lord knows is the beat.
- 21:44Speaker 2: Lord knows that was twenty fourteen. No, that was earlier.
- 21:46Speaker 2: That was twenty twenty twelve, twenty twelve, twenty eleven.
- 21:51Speaker 1: Yeah, twenty eleven, you already know. Man, want to give
- 21:54Speaker 1: a shout out to slap Woods for presenting the podcast
- 21:57Speaker 1: only papers I smoke man only leafs that we left

- 22:06Speaker 1: slap Woods when I tell you, man quality. They smoked
- 22:10Speaker 1: so good. And they're called slap Woods because they slap
- 22:14Speaker 1: I know that's like their you know, their tagline, but
- 22:17Speaker 1: it's also the truth, all right, So look, go follow
- 22:20Speaker 1: them at slap Woods. Make sure you hit their website.

- 22:48Speaker 1: you go show them some love slap woods dot com,
- 22:50Speaker 1: follow them on Instagram at slap Woods. Let's get back
- 22:53Speaker 1: to the podcast. Yeah, so you have your own own school.
- 22:57Speaker 1: I have my own school. So tell me about that.
- 23:00Speaker 2: Last time I was here was what twenty twenty one? Yeah,
- 23:02Speaker 2: so I started the school the next year, Okay, And
- 23:06Speaker 2: you know, it's a school for lyricism.
- 23:07Speaker 1: We teach people how to rhyme.
- 23:09Speaker 2: We teach them how to flow on beat if they
- 23:11Speaker 2: can't from a foundational skill standpoint. We have a mental
- 23:14Speaker 2: health a mental health class called rhyme Cology. My guy
- 23:19Speaker 2: back there. We also teach content, how to create content.
- 23:23Speaker 2: We have business classes.
- 23:25Speaker 1: I think that's the shit that like is important because
- 23:27Speaker 1: I feel like kind of like you could tell me
- 23:29Speaker 1: if you I'm always like, look, I feel like people
- 23:33Speaker 1: could technically learn how to rap, right, yeah, but I
- 23:38Speaker 1: kind of feel like if you got it, you got it,
- 23:42Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying, Like, yes, to an extent,
- 23:45Speaker 1: It's like you could technically go and like train it
- 23:48Speaker 1: like a basketball coach.
- 23:50Speaker 2: Right, but until you have to have the it, that's
- 23:54Speaker 2: what you feel. I just feel like, I mean, I
- 23:56Speaker 2: think I think the Internet has kind of removed that
- 23:58Speaker 2: a little bit.
- 23:59Speaker 1: Like you can kind of just be that is true.
- 24:02Speaker 1: I mean, listen, there's a kid named Ian that's horrible,
- 24:04Speaker 1: but he has fans Ian. I like Ian a little bit.
- 24:08Speaker 1: I like Ian. I think he's the worst rapper alive. Really,
- 24:11Speaker 1: Oh my god, he is horrible. I feel like he
- 24:14Speaker 1: has zero redeeming qualities. Isn't he from? I don't know,
- 24:17Speaker 1: I sure hope not. What's that fucking Ian kid with
- 24:21Speaker 1: all the fucking n's in his name? His double XLF
- 24:26Speaker 1: freestyle by the way, people love it, by the way,
- 24:29Speaker 1: So this is I am a single opinion because apparently
- 24:32Speaker 1: he performs it on tour and people sing it. It
- 24:35Speaker 1: is the most remedial rapping I've ever heard in my life.
- 24:38Speaker 1: I mean, you gotta, you gotta pull the thing from
- 24:41Speaker 1: st Lewis him and sexy sexy reto out wrap him
- 24:44Speaker 1: under a fucking table by the way. Yeah, I believe that.
- 24:46Speaker 2: But you know, I just want to apologize to the
- 24:48Speaker 2: Californian people to put in Yeah, we.
- 24:49Speaker 1: Can't put in over here. I mean, if he was from,
- 24:51Speaker 1: he'd be from like Orange County or something. We're from
- 24:55Speaker 1: fucking like pala Alto where they got Tesla factory ship.
- 25:01Speaker 1: I cannot wait because I'm gonna get the label request
- 25:05Speaker 1: to have Ian on, and I'm gonna tell him to
- 25:07Speaker 1: his face. I think he's the worst rapper alive. He's
- 25:08Speaker 1: gonna cook you. No, I mean he could cook me like.
- 25:10Speaker 1: I'm like, just so you know my personal opinion, I
- 25:13Speaker 1: can't think of a worst rapper. He's going to give
- 25:14Speaker 1: you fifty bus By the way, you got more fans
- 25:17Speaker 1: of me, It's all good. They probably got more money
- 25:19Speaker 1: to me. But I don't know. Your parents look like
- 25:20Speaker 1: they probably got money. But congratulate. Yeah, prove me wrong.
- 25:24Speaker 1: Put a beat on. Put a beat on. He'll cook.
- 25:26Speaker 1: Let's throw on some shook ones. Oh, he won't cook
- 25:29Speaker 1: a goddamn thing. He will cook cereal. That motherfucker will
- 25:34Speaker 1: cook Ramen noodles and cereal. I'm not mad at Ian
- 25:37Speaker 1: shout out. I shout out to you. You're a nice guy.
- 25:40Speaker 1: You know.
- 25:40Speaker 2: I just don't. I don't want to. I don't want
- 25:42Speaker 2: to piss anybody.
- 25:43Speaker 1: He's this the one rapper that I've seen like rap
- 25:46Speaker 1: And I was just like, what is this? What the
- 25:49Speaker 1: fuck are we doing? The Playboy cardis shout I get
- 25:51Speaker 1: because I feel like the cardis shit at least, is
- 25:53Speaker 1: like I feel, because you know, punk rocks kind of
- 25:56Speaker 1: kind of. I know there's punk rock bands. I know
- 25:58Speaker 1: they exist, but like you know, when I was in
- 26:00Speaker 1: high school, punk rock was like a thing the kids
- 26:02Speaker 1: were into. They'd wear T shirts. Right. That shit's kind
- 26:04Speaker 1: of out now, So it's like the new punk rock
- 26:06Speaker 1: is like Playboy CARDI, right. I mean when I heard.
- 26:10Speaker 2: The album, I was just like, I wanted him to
- 26:12Speaker 2: just tell me where he was at, where he'd been,
- 26:14Speaker 2: because he had just disappeared for so long.
- 26:16Speaker 1: You know, I just wanted to hear that. But I
- 26:17Speaker 1: don't think we get all that. But the production on
- 26:19Speaker 1: the albums, there's some crazy beats on that album. Yeah,
- 26:21Speaker 1: you know, I thought I thought he cooked. There's like
- 26:24Speaker 1: seven or eight joints on the Playboy CARDI out my
- 26:26Speaker 1: fuck With. I thought he got Kendrick on one of them. Jones. Yeah,
- 26:31Speaker 1: I thought, you know, So, how can where's the school located? Uh?
- 26:35Speaker 1: So it's all online, Okay, so you can be anywhere
- 26:38Speaker 1: online courses.
- 26:39Speaker 2: Online courses, pendulum, mek dot com. But some of my students,
- 26:41Speaker 2: you know, they're here right here in the interview, So
- 26:43Speaker 2: they flew into La having a writing retreat. You know
- 26:46Speaker 2: what I'm saying. We had the show last night with
- 26:48Speaker 2: rasc tried to rast, so some of my students ron
- 26:51Speaker 2: last night at the Pack show. You know, it's pretty dope.
- 26:54Speaker 2: And once a month we have a celebrity guest coming.
- 26:57Speaker 2: We got Jada Kiss next month. Next week part of
- 26:59Speaker 2: me hate it.
- 27:00Speaker 1: Yeah, and hopefully Cam next month. Cam would be crazy. Yeah.
- 27:04Speaker 1: I just did a big breakdown on him. I was
- 27:06Speaker 1: in No, I didn't, but that was it was funny.
- 27:08Speaker 1: That was one of the artists gonna ask you about.
- 27:09Speaker 1: It's like when you're like teaching a class, like do
- 27:11Speaker 1: you like go there and be like, look, there was
- 27:13Speaker 1: this era where these guys are rhyming the same word
- 27:16Speaker 1: with the same word and it was so fire. We
- 27:18Speaker 1: call it glitchen. Yeah.
- 27:19Speaker 2: Yeah, rather imagine me wake up seven thirty for work.
- 27:23Speaker 2: I rather run the street seven thirty with work.
- 27:25Speaker 1: Yeah. He used to do that all the time. His
- 27:28Speaker 1: new freestyles. He drops like he's just brushing his hair.
- 27:31Speaker 1: Oh my god. Yeah, yeah, I'm like, dog, can we
- 27:35Speaker 1: get an album?
- 27:36Speaker 2: He said him, And then Mason got some ship. They're
- 27:38Speaker 2: going together right now. Who do you think is better
- 27:41Speaker 2: of him and Mace, I.
- 27:43Speaker 1: Think Cam's I think, yeah, I think I think Cameron
- 27:49Speaker 1: is close. I think it might be close. They can
- 27:53Speaker 1: go either way, go either way. I think Mace is
- 27:57Speaker 1: definitely underappreciated and very slept on him talk about like
- 28:00Speaker 1: his ability of right. I mean, look, both of them are.
- 28:02Speaker 1: His ascension was outrageous and it sucks because it's like
- 28:06Speaker 1: we you know, Harlem World was so crazy. Double Up
- 28:10Speaker 1: had some shit on it. I bought Double Up. You
- 28:12Speaker 1: know back in the double when you bought albums, you
- 28:14Speaker 1: had to find some shit you liked on the alms. Yeah,
- 28:16Speaker 1: there was some shit on Double Up that was solid.
- 28:19Speaker 1: It was great, was crazy. And then like obviously popping
- 28:23Speaker 1: up on like twenty four Hours to Live and yeah,
- 28:25Speaker 1: he was cooking fucking all of the puffs. No way,
- 28:28Speaker 1: he was all over, no way out. You know, Mace
- 28:31Speaker 1: is definitely I just think Cam on every R and
- 28:33Speaker 1: B records, I think, yo, yeah, but just Cam, like man,
- 28:37Speaker 1: you want to talk about just like fingers all over
- 28:39Speaker 1: the game, just like just fashion like alone, like motherfuckers
- 28:44Speaker 1: was out here buying Pink Tall Tea's dog, Like.
- 28:46Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean I think it was something that I
- 28:48Speaker 2: said into my breakdown. Every decade he had a newer
- 28:51Speaker 2: artist with him from Harlem, right, yeah, Cardan in the nineties,
- 28:55Speaker 2: two thousands, yeah, Juel's two thousand cens he had Votto.
- 29:00Speaker 1: That's true. I forgot about the Vodo shit. Yeah. And
- 29:02Speaker 1: then he still had Jr. Writer, the writer of writers.
- 29:07Speaker 2: He had forty col He had Chaldy clips with him
- 29:09Speaker 2: for a little bit. He was cooking and he's from
- 29:12Speaker 2: hell els from the Bronx, I believe.
- 29:15Speaker 1: Hey, we gotta wrap up this interview another one presented

- 31:03Speaker 2: why we don't get no stove gut bro.
- 31:05Speaker 1: Who did I just have this talk with? I won't
- 31:07Speaker 1: even say who we were talking now, I can't talk
- 31:09Speaker 1: about it. Well, I'll just say this, whoever I was

- 31:46Speaker 1: What's the like like? Because you know, I think when
- 31:48Speaker 1: I was like when I was going up, I remember
- 31:50Speaker 1: seeing Baby Grand was like the label like on a
- 31:52Speaker 1: bunch of dope albums, you know, but like two thousand
- 31:54Speaker 1: and three. Yeah, but fuck that dude, man, I mean
- 31:56Speaker 1: the dude like there was two people who were shipping
- 31:59Speaker 1: on him, were very pretty parted legends, I believe it,
- 32:02Speaker 1: and they're like, yeah, yeah, that dude's like the absolute worst.
- 32:05Speaker 1: Now he's black guy too short. I figured he was

- 32:30Speaker 1: You just don't know who he is.
- 32:32Speaker 2: But if you was around during the block, you know
- 32:34Speaker 2: he offered a lot of people deals back then.
- 32:36Speaker 1: I was like, no, it didn't make sense to me.
- 32:39Speaker 1: It just didn't make it never made sense to me.
- 32:41Speaker 1: I saw, Uh, somebody said one of the dudes from
- 32:45Speaker 1: Raucus and Sterns and New Ship. I don't know who
- 32:49Speaker 1: from from I think the Murdoch full Murdoch so Rupert
- 32:54Speaker 1: Murdoch's son who funded Raucous Records. Okay, but somebody had
- 33:00Speaker 1: said that he's getting into some other label ship. I
- 33:02Speaker 1: don't know, but I don't know. I feel like all
- 33:04Speaker 1: of those rich like lineage folks like and his son,
- 33:09Speaker 1: everyone's just kind of taking over the world right now.
- 33:12Speaker 1: And then you know, you got the the Granges running
- 33:15Speaker 1: two fucking majors. You know. Do you remember let me
- 33:18Speaker 1: ask you this, do you remember Timmy he'll figure son.

- 33:28Speaker 1: figure son. But he was most like singing, singing. I
- 33:31Speaker 1: don't know, but I remember he was running. Uh, he
- 33:35Speaker 1: was running. He was running. He his dad hated that.
- 33:39Speaker 1: I'm sure didn't like it. He supported it though, yeah,
- 33:43Speaker 1: I'm sure he probably financed it.
- 33:45Speaker 2: Yeah, but then he had him running, like the the
- 33:48Speaker 2: clothes there was another clothing line that he'll figure bought outside.
- 33:51Speaker 1: Oh, like a secondary like but it was a big one.
- 33:53Speaker 1: I can't remember the name. Let me find out. He
- 33:56Speaker 1: was running his fucking fat farm. It was like it
- 33:58Speaker 1: was like paper denim of something like that. It probably
