Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: Hey, discos, need a little more Disgraceland in your life,
- 0:05Speaker 1: just to touch to get you through. Yeah, me too.
- 0:08Speaker 1: This is the podcast that comes after the podcast. Welcome
- 0:12Speaker 1: to Disgraceland, the after Party. Welcome to the Disgraceland bonus episode,
- 0:31Speaker 1: a little thing we like to call the after party.
- 0:33Speaker 1: This is the show after the show, the party after
- 0:36Speaker 1: the party, the bridge to get you from one full
- 0:38Speaker 1: episode of Disgraceland to the other, the backyard to dig
- 0:41Speaker 1: into the dirt. On this bonus episode, we are talking
- 0:44Speaker 1: about this week's subject of the Disgraceland full episode, River Phoenix,
- 0:48Speaker 1: great actors from the nineteen nineties. We've also got a
- 0:51Speaker 1: special Disgraceland announcement, and of course we are diving into
- 0:54Speaker 1: your voicemails, texts and more and as always, a whole
- 0:58Speaker 1: lot of Rosie. All right, disc goes, let's get into it.
- 1:15Speaker 1: On October thirty first, nineteen ninety three, Tupac Secure was
- 1:18Speaker 1: charged with two counts of aggravated assault for shooting his
- 1:21Speaker 1: gune at two off duty police officers the day before.
- 1:25Speaker 1: Also on October thirty first, nineteen ninety three, English actress
- 1:30Speaker 1: Letitia Wright was born. Letitia would go on to act
- 1:33Speaker 1: in the film Black Panther, a big budget, mainstream superhero
- 1:36Speaker 1: flick that loosely played homage to the radical Black Panther
- 1:39Speaker 1: political party from the sixties and the seventies, an organization
- 1:42Speaker 1: that Tupac Shakura was raised in. Basically, Tupac's mother and
- 1:46Speaker 1: stepfather were both members of the Marxist Leninist Black Panther
- 1:50Speaker 1: political group. Federico Fellini, the famous and influential filmmaker, had
- 1:54Speaker 1: no politics. His films, at least were a political in nature.
- 1:59Speaker 1: He died on October thirty first, nineteen ninety three. Fellini
- 2:03Speaker 1: was a major influence on director Tim Burton, and tim
- 2:05Speaker 1: Burton's filmmaking, with its distinctive style, is described as burton
- 2:10Speaker 1: Esque in the same way that Fellini's filmmaking is described
- 2:13Speaker 1: as felliniesque. On the day that Federico Fellini died on
- 2:18Speaker 1: October thirty first, nineteen ninety three, Tim Burton had the
- 2:21Speaker 1: number one movie at the box office, A Nightmare Before Christmas. Currently,
- 2:26Speaker 1: in twenty twenty four, thirty one years later, the Internet
- 2:30Speaker 1: is a light with rumors that a live action version
- 2:33Speaker 1: of Tim Burton's A Nightmare before Christmas is in the works,
- 2:35Speaker 1: potentially starring Tim Burton's friend in frequent collaborator, Johnny Depp.
- 2:40Speaker 1: Now on October thirty first, nineteen ninety three, Johnny Depp
- 2:43Speaker 1: was in production with Tim Burton on the biopic ed Wood,
- 2:46Speaker 1: about the idiosyncratic cult director Who's incredibly Campion and sexploitative
- 2:51Speaker 1: films Plan nine from Outer Space, Bride of the Monster,
- 2:54Speaker 1: Orgy of the Dead, among others, were most certainly being
- 2:57Speaker 1: shown on that Halloween weekend back in nineteen ninety three,
- 3:01Speaker 1: But Johnny Depp was not watching movies. On October thirty first,
- 3:05Speaker 1: nineteen ninety three, he was on stage playing guitar with
- 3:08Speaker 1: his band p at his nightclub, the Viper Room on
- 3:12Speaker 1: the Sunset Strip in Los Angeles. On stage with Johnny
- 3:16Speaker 1: that night were musicians Al Jorginson from Ministry, Benmontesge from
- 3:19Speaker 1: Tom Petty's Heartbreakers, Gibe Haynes from The Butthole Surfers, and
- 3:22Speaker 1: Flee from the Red Hot Chili Peppers. John Fruchiante from
- 3:25Speaker 1: the Red Hot Chili Peppers got up to play that night,
- 3:28Speaker 1: but he was so fucked up on drugs that he
- 3:30Speaker 1: vomited on stage before stumbling off without playing much of
- 3:33Speaker 1: anything at all. We've detailed all of this to you,
- 3:36Speaker 1: the parts about the Viper Room in this week's full
- 3:39Speaker 1: episode on River Phoenix, who was at that moment in
- 3:42Speaker 1: the crowd there with John Fruciante, his good friend, on
- 3:46Speaker 1: October thirty first, nineteen ninety three, and Rivers there in
- 3:49Speaker 1: the audience hoping to get up on stage with his
- 3:51Speaker 1: guitar to jam with this incredible group of musicians. Now,
- 3:56Speaker 1: prior to arriving at the Viper Room, River Phoenix and
- 3:59Speaker 1: John Fruschie, we're on a day's long massive drug binge
- 4:04Speaker 1: that involved a routine of smoking crack or shooting mainlining
- 4:08Speaker 1: cocaine and then immediately shooting heroin afterward to level off
- 4:12Speaker 1: that crack cocaine high. So by the time both met
- 4:15Speaker 1: arride at the Viper Room on October thirty first, nineteen
- 4:17Speaker 1: ninety three, they were blitzed, and upon arrival immediately more
- 4:21Speaker 1: cocaine was provided to them. Now they're high, they're there,
- 4:26Speaker 1: they're in the audience, p is performing on stage. Okay again,
- 4:30Speaker 1: that's the butthole surfers guy Gibbie Haynes, says Johnny Depp.
- 4:33Speaker 1: That's who else? Did I say? Flee al from ministry
- 4:37Speaker 1: I'm not sure who was playing drums, but anyways, p
- 4:40Speaker 1: is on stage and they're playing a song of the
- 4:42Speaker 1: song of theirs entitled Michael Stipe. Okay, Michael Stipe from
- 4:47Speaker 1: ram Now. This is a song that details I've never
- 4:50Speaker 1: heard it, but I was reading about it this morning.
- 4:52Speaker 1: It details the absurdity of Hollywood fame, and the song
- 4:56Speaker 1: name checks, among others, not only Michael Stipe, of course,
- 4:59Speaker 1: but director Sophia Coppola, but also River Phoenix, who, like
- 5:04Speaker 1: I said, was in the audience at that moment. He's
- 5:07Speaker 1: name checked in that song as well. And while he's
- 5:09Speaker 1: being name checked in that song that's being performed live
- 5:12Speaker 1: on that stage at that moment, River Phoenix is in
- 5:15Speaker 1: the audience, overducing now again. As detailed in this week's
- 5:21Speaker 1: full episode on River Phoenix, River was ushered out onto
- 5:24Speaker 1: the sidewalk, where he passed out and died. Flee accompanied
- 5:29Speaker 1: his dead friend to the hospital in the back of
- 5:31Speaker 1: the ambulance the next day. Johnny Depp and everyone else
- 5:34Speaker 1: with a bold faced name who was at the Viper
- 5:36Speaker 1: Room on October thirty first, nineteen ninety three, left town.
- 5:39Speaker 1: The next film, The River Phoenix, was to star him
- 5:43Speaker 1: was Interviewed with a Vampire, but of course River Phoenix
- 5:45Speaker 1: did not start in that role. Christian Slater did. It's
- 5:50Speaker 1: hard to argue that the movie wouldn't have been better
- 5:53Speaker 1: with River Phoenix playing the part of Daniel Malloy. Christian
- 5:56Speaker 1: Slater made some pretty forgettable films after Interview with a
- 5:59Speaker 1: Van Empire Murder in the First Bed of Roses Julian
- 6:03Speaker 1: Poe among them. I don't think I've seen any of
- 6:05Speaker 1: those movies, so I can't really speak to them. But
- 6:08Speaker 1: the fact that I haven't seen them or been compelled
- 6:10Speaker 1: to see them, it says something. Now, had River Phoenix
- 6:13Speaker 1: made Interview with the Vampire, what films would he have
- 6:16Speaker 1: started afterward? This is very tough to answer, but Interview
- 6:20Speaker 1: with the Vampire was released in nineteen ninety four, so
- 6:23Speaker 1: we get some idea of what films were in production
- 6:26Speaker 1: around in and around that time when River died, when
- 6:31Speaker 1: Interview with the Vampire was made, when he would have
- 6:33Speaker 1: been made making it, and then what films were in
- 6:34Speaker 1: production afterward that we can sort of tell by who's
- 6:38Speaker 1: starred in them, which roles might have been offered to
- 6:41Speaker 1: River Phoenix or it might have been available to him.
- 6:43Speaker 1: I should say okay again. An interview with the Vampire
- 6:46Speaker 1: was released in nineteen ninety four. After that, Leonardo DiCaprio
- 6:50Speaker 1: started in nineteen ninety five Basketball Diaries, a role that
- 6:54Speaker 1: one of you guys I can't remember who, but I apologize,
- 6:57Speaker 1: just thank you for DM. I mean, one of you
- 6:58Speaker 1: guys suggested that River would have and perfect in Basketball Diaries,
- 7:02Speaker 1: and I agree. Also in nineteen ninety five, Brad Pitt
- 7:05Speaker 1: starred in Seven. Now that's another role that I could
- 7:08Speaker 1: see River Phoenix in. After that, it starts to get
- 7:11Speaker 1: real interesting when you imagine River Phoenix maturing into manhood
- 7:15Speaker 1: and considering what films he would have taken on, what
- 7:19Speaker 1: films that went to other people? Okay, how about Leonardo
- 7:22Speaker 1: DiCaprio's role in The Departed from two thousand and six,
- 7:25Speaker 1: or how about River as part of George Clooney's two
- 7:28Speaker 1: thousand and one ensemble for Ocean's Eleven. I can see
- 7:32Speaker 1: him in both these roles, and he would have killed it.
- 7:35Speaker 1: He was an incredible actor. He was, quite literally, I believe,
- 7:39Speaker 1: the best of his generation. How these films would have
- 7:42Speaker 1: turned out with him in them, we'll never know. Of course,
- 7:45Speaker 1: we won okay, it's you know, we're also not going
- 7:48Speaker 1: to know who gave River Phoenix that drink on October
- 7:53Speaker 1: thirty first, that was spiked with heroin and cocaine that
- 7:56Speaker 1: killed him. This is a subject that we touch upon,
- 8:02Speaker 1: of course, in the episode. I'm tempted to ask you, guys,
- 8:06Speaker 1: who you think gave that lethal drink to River Phoenix,
- 8:09Speaker 1: But I don't want our discourse here to evolve into conjecture.
- 8:13Speaker 1: The rumors, however, are very compelling, and they're worth looking
- 8:17Speaker 1: into in your free time. If, of course, I thought
- 8:20Speaker 1: there was real, corroborating evidence that linked any of the
- 8:24Speaker 1: Viper Room attendees that night to River Phoenix's death, I
- 8:26Speaker 1: would say so. But the real proof, the hard proof,
- 8:29Speaker 1: it just isn't there yet. So all of this is
- 8:34Speaker 1: relative to that night, October thirty first, nineteen ninety three,
- 8:39Speaker 1: which is a big part detailed in this week's full
- 8:42Speaker 1: episode of the Disgraceline podcast on River Phoenix. The River
- 8:46Speaker 1: Phoenix loss was a hard one for a lot of you.
- 8:49Speaker 1: I know this because I've heard from you. I've heard
- 8:50Speaker 1: from you in the DMS, I've heard from you on voicemail,
- 8:53Speaker 1: I've heard from you via text, next week, I didn't
- 8:57Speaker 1: plan this. I mean I planned it, but I didn't
- 9:00Speaker 1: tend for this to be the result. Next week, we've
- 9:03Speaker 1: got another story about another actor, and it's a tough loss.
- 9:07Speaker 1: It's coming your way on Tuesday. It's on Matthew Perry,
- 9:10Speaker 1: whose death is still very much part of the headlines.
- 9:15Speaker 1: But rather than continue to delve into the sadness connected
- 9:18Speaker 1: to the loss of a beloved actor, or to delve
- 9:21Speaker 1: into who or who may not have been culpable in
- 9:24Speaker 1: the actor's death, because that's still very much a question
- 9:27Speaker 1: that's out there, I'd like to keep this week's Question
- 9:29Speaker 1: of the Week a bit lighter, just because, okay, we
- 9:33Speaker 1: could do with some lightness after the heaviness of these episodes.
- 9:35Speaker 1: So when you're listening to the Matthew Perry episode, whether
- 9:38Speaker 1: or not you're a friend's guy or girl or whatever,
- 9:41Speaker 1: or whether or not you're you like Seinfeld, Moore or whatever,
- 9:43Speaker 1: whatever your taste, when you're listening to the Matthew Perry episode,
- 9:47Speaker 1: obviously we're talking about television. So I want you guys
- 9:49Speaker 1: to be thinking about what is the greatest television show
- 9:52Speaker 1: of all time? All Right, that's what I want to
- 9:54Speaker 1: talk about. In the after party with you guys next week.
- 9:56Speaker 1: That's what I want to be talking with you guys
- 9:57Speaker 1: on text about, on voicemail in the DM. In a
- 10:00Speaker 1: lot of ways, it's a super basic question, of course,
- 10:03Speaker 1: but in a lot of ways it's an impossible question
- 10:05Speaker 1: to answer. Also, Friends Seinfeld, their sitcoms, they happen right
- 10:10Speaker 1: there at the edge of pre peak television. They're kind
- 10:15Speaker 1: of part of that last generation of I don't want
- 10:18Speaker 1: to say bad television because obviously Friends in Seinfeld are
- 10:21Speaker 1: not bad television, and there was some great television being
- 10:24Speaker 1: made in the nineties. NYPD Blue stands out. There's more.
- 10:29Speaker 1: If I thought about it for a minute, I could
- 10:30Speaker 1: come up with some other examples. But what happens after
- 10:34Speaker 1: Friends goes off the air is we get this explosion
- 10:38Speaker 1: of incredible television where the medium really starts to change. Sopranos,
- 10:42Speaker 1: The Wire, mad Men, Breaking Bad. All those shows are
- 10:46Speaker 1: truly great. There's probably five or ten more examples that
- 10:49Speaker 1: I could listen are also truly great, not good great.
- 10:52Speaker 1: But at the end of the day, what are you
- 10:54Speaker 1: returning to you at night? What are you chilling out with?
- 10:56Speaker 1: What are you unwhining with at night? Before you crash.
- 10:59Speaker 1: Is it Breaking Bad or is it Seinfeld? Is it
- 11:01Speaker 1: the Wire or is it Friends? What is the number
- 11:06Speaker 1: one greatest television show of all time? It is a
- 11:11Speaker 1: tough question to answer, but I want you, guys to try.
- 11:13Speaker 1: I want you to hit me up six one seven
- 11:14Speaker 1: nine oh six six six three eight, leave me a voicemail,
- 11:17Speaker 1: send me a text. DM me at Disgrace Slam Pod
- 11:19Speaker 1: on Instagram x Facebook to let me know. I'm gonna
- 11:22Speaker 1: take a break. I'll be back in a flash with
- 11:23Speaker 1: your answers from last week's question of the Week. All right, guys,
- 11:45Speaker 1: before we get into your voicemails and text messages, I
- 11:47Speaker 1: gotta let you know about something cool we have coming

- 12:02Speaker 1: Blink one eighty two's Tom DeLong and his obsession with

- 12:11Speaker 1: real impact that Tom DeLong has actually made The contribution
- 12:16Speaker 1: to Tom DeLong, the guitar player for Blink one eighty two,
- 12:18Speaker 1: has made to society is pretty fucking mind blowing. And
- 12:22Speaker 1: this is a very creepy story. It involves shadowy government figures,
- 12:26Speaker 1: life from other realms, and of course it's Blink one
- 12:28Speaker 1: eighty two, so it also involves dick jokes, fart jokes,
- 12:32Speaker 1: all that good stuff. There's even an arrest for the
- 12:34Speaker 1: true crime heads sort of. Anyhow, the show is October ninth,

- 12:52Speaker 1: it's gonna be a live stream version of the Disgracelam podcast.

- 13:55Speaker 1: with your voicemails, your text, your dms right here. Last
- 13:58Speaker 1: week's question of the week on who the greatest act
- 14:00Speaker 1: sure of the nineteen nineties was Let's hear from this
- 14:02Speaker 1: voicemail from the nine to.
- 14:04Speaker 2: Four Jake Burried from the nine to four two months
- 14:08Speaker 2: to type the best actor from the nineties. I agree,
- 14:12Speaker 2: River Phoenix. Some filks might say Tom Hanks, Tom Cruise,
- 14:17Speaker 2: I'm Joe, and Robert de Niro in which you know,
- 14:20Speaker 2: like who's the great baseball team ever? The New York Yankees.
- 14:23Speaker 2: Well it's kind of like you no shit, But de
- 14:27Speaker 2: Niro was in Casino, he did a bunk Tale, he
- 14:31Speaker 2: would did Good Fellows, motherfucking Heat, Jackie Brown fucking Copland,
- 14:37Speaker 2: which has got to be one of the most underrated
- 14:39Speaker 2: and underappreciated movies from the nineties if you just look
- 14:42Speaker 2: at the cast. Amazing films. So not only was he
- 14:45Speaker 2: the volume of his films, but the quality. You know,
- 14:49Speaker 2: he was just in a shitload Casina. I think Casino
- 14:52Speaker 2: just a shitload of great movies. So it might not
- 14:55Speaker 2: be the most popular pick, but he killed in the nineties.
- 15:01Speaker 2: You want to say Tom Hanks to Academy Awards, Philadelphia,
- 15:05Speaker 2: Forrest Gump, a variety of roles, just completely different characters.
- 15:10Speaker 2: But yeah, for me, I gotta say just because of
- 15:14Speaker 2: the you know, that's the quality of all the films
- 15:17Speaker 2: that he was. He was in in the nineties, So
- 15:19Speaker 2: that's that man. Appreciate it.
- 15:21Speaker 1: Nine oh four. Your Yankees comment, it's uh, it's it's
- 15:24Speaker 1: stinging this Red Sox fan. I cannot argue with you.
- 15:28Speaker 1: I can't. I can't argue with you about your de
- 15:31Speaker 1: Niro pick either. He's not somebody that I would have
- 15:34Speaker 1: thought of, but when you lay it all out there,
- 15:36Speaker 1: he truly did kill it in the nineties and Copland
- 15:39Speaker 1: underrated film. You're absolutely right, incredible film and de Niro's
- 15:42Speaker 1: role roll in it especially, you blew it just so
- 15:46Speaker 1: fucking good. Okay, thank you, Barry. Appreciate it real quick, Barry.
- 15:50Speaker 1: That reminds me. I saw Copland in the theaters when
- 15:53Speaker 1: it came out. I was on tour with my band
- 15:55Speaker 1: cast Iron Hike, and we were right around New Jersey,
- 15:58Speaker 1: New York, and I remember we were all blown away
- 16:01Speaker 1: by the movie. We were blown away by by Michael
- 16:04Speaker 1: Rappaport's character Superboy. And we were in New York City.
- 16:10Speaker 1: We were down We're like little Italy, like Mott Street,
- 16:13Speaker 1: Prince Street, something like that. We were in our van
- 16:15Speaker 1: and we had the windows open and we had just
- 16:19Speaker 1: seen Copland. It was like the night before or that
- 16:22Speaker 1: day or something. It was really fresh, is the point,
- 16:25Speaker 1: and we all heard that we heard this voice outside
- 16:28Speaker 1: the van. We're stopped in traffic, you know, on one
- 16:31Speaker 1: of these tiny New York City streets, and we hear
- 16:35Speaker 1: this voice coming through the window, and we all just
- 16:38Speaker 1: had this look of recognition, like, what the hell's happening
- 16:41Speaker 1: when we look and it's Michael Rapperport right outside the
- 16:45Speaker 1: van talking to somebody, and we could hear his voice.
- 16:47Speaker 1: It was fresh in our mind from of course seeing
- 16:49Speaker 1: him very recently in Copland. That blew my mind. Anyhow,
- 16:54Speaker 1: there's a little Copland story for you. Okay, let's let's
- 16:56Speaker 1: get back into some voicemails here. Last week, of course,
- 16:58Speaker 1: we released an episode on the NFL and Carol Rosenbloom
- 17:02Speaker 1: was part of that episode. Carol Rosenbloom was the owner
- 17:04Speaker 1: of the Baltimore Colts in the Los Angeles Rams. We
- 17:07Speaker 1: actually got this voicemail from Carol Rosenbloom's nephew.
- 17:12Speaker 3: Hey, what up? My name is Asher and scrolling through
- 17:15Speaker 3: my Spotify feet today your podcast came up NOTT NFL
- 17:19Speaker 3: and the origins of it I knew right away Oom
- 17:23Speaker 3: was about because my great great uncle is Carol rosen Bloom,
- 17:26Speaker 3: and I grew up with these stories of him doing
- 17:28Speaker 3: these crazy things. My grandmother remembers being in the locker
- 17:32Speaker 3: room meeting all the players. So our uncle was Carol,
- 17:35Speaker 3: her dad's brother, and we grew up in the family
- 17:38Speaker 3: with this notion that Carol is a bad, bad guy.
- 17:41Speaker 3: I'm twenty five years old now, and Carol was not
- 17:45Speaker 3: liking in the family.
- 17:46Speaker 2: He was always considered a bad dude.
- 17:48Speaker 3: We got me going to any more questions. Well, thank
- 17:51Speaker 3: you very much for the episode.
- 17:52Speaker 1: I really enjoyed. Asher. Incredible to hear from you, man.
- 17:55Speaker 1: Thank you, appreciate you calling in. I'm sure the stories
- 17:59Speaker 1: that you've heard about your uncle go way beyond the
- 18:02Speaker 1: ones that we told in the last NFL episode that
- 18:05Speaker 1: we did in those episodes are pretty fucking nuts. I
- 18:07Speaker 1: appreciate you calling it and thank you Asher. All right,
- 18:09Speaker 1: let's do some text guys. Six one seven nine six
- 18:12Speaker 1: six six three eight you want to leave me a voice? Mialli,
- 18:14Speaker 1: you want to send me a text? Let's do this
- 18:15Speaker 1: text from the eight one eight Hey Jake Mickey here,
- 18:22Speaker 1: long text warning. We have a two party here. Part
- 18:24Speaker 1: one is in response to your question of who was
- 18:25Speaker 1: the best actor of the nineteen nineties. I have one
- 18:27Speaker 1: that I think is just tough to argue against. We've
- 18:29Speaker 1: got Denzel Washington, Mobetta, Blues, Ricochet, Malcolm X, the Pelican Bris, Philadelphia,
- 18:34Speaker 1: Crimson Tide, Devil in a Blue Dress, coverage under fire Fall,
- 18:36Speaker 1: and he got gamed, the Siege, the Bone Collector of
- 18:38Speaker 1: the Hurricane. And that's only a few. Number two Daniel
- 18:41Speaker 1: Dave lewis a close second. But my opinion on the
- 18:45Speaker 1: subject of River Phoenix, I think River is probably the
- 18:48Speaker 1: James Dean of our generation. Some might say Heath Ledger,
- 18:51Speaker 1: which is a tough one to disagree with. I don't
- 18:53Speaker 1: think DiCaprio, Gossling Pit, Matt Damon, Wahlberg, even Joaquen would
- 18:57Speaker 1: have had as many parts if River were still in
- 19:00Speaker 1: the mix. That being said, it also would have been
- 19:02Speaker 1: great to see River join forces with his contemporaries. And
- 19:04Speaker 1: I'm out as always. Keep doing what you do, Mickey,
- 19:08Speaker 1: Thanks awesome text. Yeah, you're absolutely right when you rattle
- 19:11Speaker 1: off those names, When you rattle off DiCaprio, Gossling Pit,
- 19:15Speaker 1: Matt Damon, Wahlberg, even Joaquim, it's tough. It's tough. It's tough,
- 19:21Speaker 1: you know. I love all those guys and I love
- 19:24Speaker 1: what they do what they've done, I should say, throughout
- 19:27Speaker 1: their career, and it's it's tough to think about what
- 19:29Speaker 1: would have not been available to them had River Phoenix
- 19:32Speaker 1: remained alive and working. Great text, Mickey, appreciate you the
- 19:36Speaker 1: seven three to two text in Hey, good morning from
- 19:38Speaker 1: the seven three too. Just listen to the after party.
- 19:40Speaker 1: Thank you for the Keith Jarrett recommendation. Great stuff. We'll
- 19:43Speaker 1: explore more, Mark Mark, thanks for the text. I was
- 19:48Speaker 1: actually listening to Keith Jarrett right before I got on
- 19:51Speaker 1: the mic, and but I wasn't listening to the song
- 19:54Speaker 1: or the album that I recommended to you, guys. The
- 19:56Speaker 1: song was The Rich and the Poor. What I've been
- 19:58Speaker 1: listening to lately is the Cold Concert. Am I pronouncing
- 20:03Speaker 1: that the correct way? I don't think I am. It's
- 20:04Speaker 1: cold as in con Germany Koln. That's from January twenty fourth,
- 20:10Speaker 1: nineteen seventy five. The track is actually entitled January twenty four,
- 20:14Speaker 1: nineteen seventy five, Part two C. Okay, check that out.
- 20:18Speaker 1: Con Concert Keith Jarrett January twenty four, nineteen seventy five,
- 20:23Speaker 1: Part two C. Guys, this is reminding me of old
- 20:26Speaker 1: school after party here with the recommendations. I miss the recommendations.
- 20:29Speaker 1: I kind of want to bring the recommendations back in
- 20:32Speaker 1: some form. I don't know what. I don't feel like
- 20:34Speaker 1: the after party is a medium for it, though, because
- 20:37Speaker 1: this thing is packed. It's jam packed, and I'm always
- 20:41Speaker 1: making these things too damn long, and Matt's always complaining
- 20:43Speaker 1: to me they're too long. Man, I got to edit
- 20:46Speaker 1: this shit. What are you doing? Going on and on
- 20:48Speaker 1: and on? But hey, you guys, you know we've got
- 20:50Speaker 1: to talk. But maybe there's another spot for the recommendations
- 20:53Speaker 1: where I don't know, let's keep talking about that. Six
- 20:55Speaker 1: point seven nine oh six six six three eight. Send
- 20:58Speaker 1: me a text, guys, semi a voicemail, send me your records.
- 21:00Speaker 1: What are you listening to? I want to know? And
- 21:02Speaker 1: you can also hit me up at disgracelam Pod on X,
- 21:05Speaker 1: on Instagram, on Facebook, just like G. Todd Monday on
- 21:10Speaker 1: X who writes, Hey, anyone that's a fan of Al
- 21:13Speaker 1: Davis Casino and the Old Mob needs to check out
- 21:16Speaker 1: the at disgracelam Pod. The NFL, a dead owner, a
- 21:19Speaker 1: dead gangster, a league founded on gambling. It's awesome. H G.
- 21:24Speaker 1: Todd Monday appreciate you man. Thanks, thanks for shouting us
- 21:27Speaker 1: out on the old Twitter machine. Excuse me the X
- 21:30Speaker 1: machine at disgracelamd pod on X at disgracelam pod on Instagram,
- 21:35Speaker 1: at disgracelamp pod on Facebook on Instagram. Johnny Vinyl rights
- 21:40Speaker 1: regards to the River Phoenix episode, I miss them even
- 21:43Speaker 1: after all these years. That's how you know. A complete
- 21:46Speaker 1: stranger who provided some form of art that you connected
- 21:48Speaker 1: with was that special. When this stranger leaves a void,
- 21:52Speaker 1: the memory becomes like a railroad that has no passing
- 21:55Speaker 1: trains anymore. Phoenix was the guy, well said Johnny. See,
- 21:59Speaker 1: I told you. I told you, guys, I heard from
- 22:01Speaker 1: you on the River thing. I knew, I know, I
- 22:04Speaker 1: know it hurts, I know it. I hear you. Six
- 22:07Speaker 1: one seven nine oh six six six three eight. Guys,
- 22:09Speaker 1: hit me up with your answers to next week's question
- 22:12Speaker 1: of the Week, which is going to be on what
- 22:15Speaker 1: is the Greatest Television ever? Okay, I want to know
- 22:18Speaker 1: at Disgrace lampod on the Socials. I'm going to take
- 22:21Speaker 1: a quick break, see Matt, I'm getting this wrapped up quickly.
- 22:23Speaker 1: I'm gonna take a quick break. I'll be back in
- 22:26Speaker 1: the flash with some of your emails and some of
- 22:28Speaker 1: your reviews. This one comes from Val Vesga Vezga, who writes, Hey,
- 22:47Speaker 1: I love your podcast and I'm a Britney Spears fan
- 22:50Speaker 1: slash aspiring law students, so I was very happy to
- 22:53Speaker 1: listen to the Free Britney episodes. However, I'm concerned through
- 22:57Speaker 1: exclamation points because you describe the mole at the Free
- 23:00Speaker 1: Britney protests as wearing short shorts and fishnet tights with
- 23:04Speaker 1: an old Circus Tour T shirt. And that was me
- 23:09Speaker 1: pictures attached. I'm not a mole. These are my lifelong
- 23:14Speaker 1: friends and I was a major part of helping the
- 23:16Speaker 1: movement get organized, including my change dot org petition with
- 23:19Speaker 1: eighty thousand signatures that I sent as a nuisance via
- 23:22Speaker 1: facts to Sam Ingram twice a week. Imagine my surprise
- 23:26Speaker 1: and horror when you said that for excamation points. I
- 23:29Speaker 1: know you were just characterizing the unknown mole, but what
- 23:32Speaker 1: are the chances? Anyway, loved the podcast, just how to
- 23:34Speaker 1: clear my name? You got it? Val, That's incredible, Thanks Pal.
- 23:39Speaker 1: I appreciate the email and the pictures of course. Disgrace
- 23:43Speaker 1: sampod at gmail dot com. Guys, you want to get
- 23:45Speaker 1: in touch. Let's do one more of these emails, all right.
- 23:47Speaker 1: This one comes from Justin, who sends me a picture
- 23:50Speaker 1: of Phil Lineen from Thin Lizzie and says it's the boys'
- 23:52Speaker 1: birthday today would have been seventy five. I love thn
- 23:56Speaker 1: Lizzie for the tenth thousandth frickin' time. Okay, let's see
- 24:02Speaker 1: what else are we talking about here, Disgrace slam Pot
- 24:04Speaker 1: at gmail dot com. You guys, want to send me
- 24:05Speaker 1: an email? A right? Oh, some reviews. The reviews have
- 24:08Speaker 1: been great, guys. The best way you can help this show,
- 24:10Speaker 1: as you know, is to leave a review on Apple
- 24:13Speaker 1: Podcasts or on Spotify. Okay, this helps with discovery, and
- 24:17Speaker 1: as you also know, I pick a couple reviewers every week.
- 24:20Speaker 1: I read them here on air. You hear your names,
- 24:22Speaker 1: you send me an email, and then I send you
- 24:24Speaker 1: some merchandise whatever we got lying around, T shirts, pins, patches,
- 24:28Speaker 1: whatever it is. I'm not making any promises you're gonna
- 24:31Speaker 1: get something, okay, but you got to hear your name
- 24:33Speaker 1: and you gotta email me. You gotta be patient. Okay,
- 24:36Speaker 1: I've getting to you. I am. I promise I'm getting
- 24:38Speaker 1: to you. Got to some of you already. I'll get
- 24:40Speaker 1: to some more. Keep the reviews coming, We very much
- 24:43Speaker 1: appreciate it. Chris Hillman on Spotify Rights Jake loved this
- 24:46Speaker 1: episode on River. Such a great young talent, gone way
- 24:49Speaker 1: too soon. I watch Stand by Me so many times
- 24:52Speaker 1: growing up, and it's still one of my favorite movies.
- 24:54Speaker 1: The mass puking scene is great. A shame River had
- 24:57Speaker 1: so many addictions and he couldn't overcome. He would have
- 24:59Speaker 1: been a great actor by today's standards, the best actor
- 25:02Speaker 1: of the nineteen nineties, though, my pick would be Tom
- 25:04Speaker 1: Hanks Saving Private and Ryan far As Gump, to name
- 25:07Speaker 1: a few. Love Disgraceland. Keep up the great work. You
- 25:10Speaker 1: got it, Chris, appreciate you. Chris, get in touch. We'll
- 25:12Speaker 1: get you some merch. Kelsey Marie writes on Apple Podcasts,
- 25:16Speaker 1: simple the best. I think she means simply the best
- 25:19Speaker 1: five stars. Kelsey goes on to say, my brother and
- 25:22Speaker 1: I have nine year age gap, so growing up, we
- 25:25Speaker 1: didn't have a lot in common. What we did have
- 25:26Speaker 1: in common, though, was the love for music our parents
- 25:28Speaker 1: instilled in us, and now in our thirties and forties,
- 25:30Speaker 1: we still enjoy sharing new music or rediscovered music with
- 25:33Speaker 1: each other. When I discovered Disgraceland a few years ago,
- 25:36Speaker 1: it reminded me so much of the conversations my brother
- 25:38Speaker 1: and I would have. I shared it with him, and
- 25:40Speaker 1: now every Thursday, he, my sister in law, my partner,
- 25:43Speaker 1: and I get together to have an after after party,
- 25:45Speaker 1: discussing the episodes, curating playlists, and just having a good time. Kelsey,
- 25:51Speaker 1: you were the best. Your brother's the best, So is
- 25:53Speaker 1: your sister in law, and so is your partner. Kelsey,
- 25:57Speaker 1: don't bogart those playlists sharing with us, Okay, hit us
- 26:00Speaker 1: up at disgrace landpod on. I don't know where where
- 26:03Speaker 1: where I guess Instagram, where X. Perhaps give us a
- 26:07Speaker 1: link to the playlist. I'll share them out here. I'll
- 26:09Speaker 1: direct people to your Spotify or wherever you're putting them together. Guys,
- 26:14Speaker 1: appreciate the reviews, appreciate the emails. I appreciate the calls.
- 26:19Speaker 1: I got a question for you. One of the things
- 26:21Speaker 1: we're thinking about doing here at Disgraceland, for a bunch
- 26:24Speaker 1: of technical and production reasons that will bore you, is
- 26:28Speaker 1: moving the full episode a day earlier to Mondays. Honestly,
- 26:34Speaker 1: I can't see a negative in doing this. But if
- 26:36Speaker 1: there is some reason that you guys don't want episodes
- 26:40Speaker 1: on Monday and you prefer them on Tuesdays for some
- 26:42Speaker 1: reason that they're not considering a good reason, I should say,
- 26:44Speaker 1: let me know all this would mean to you guys.
- 26:47Speaker 1: If we shifted this up a day, would be getting
- 26:50Speaker 1: the episode a day earlier. And I can't see why
- 26:52Speaker 1: that's a bad thing. So just let me know. That's
- 26:55Speaker 1: one thing we're considering. Another thing, Like I said, recommendations,
- 26:58Speaker 1: I missed the recommendation. I'm miss talking to you guys
- 27:02Speaker 1: about what I'm listening to, what I'm watching, and what
- 27:04Speaker 1: I'm reading. And yeah, if you got torreccent in my way,
- 27:08Speaker 1: all right, and uh, I'm thinking I'm noodling, I'm noodling
- 27:12Speaker 1: on some recommendation stuff for you guys. All Right, this
- 27:15Speaker 1: episode is hearing, it's end the after party. It's going
- 27:17Speaker 1: to continue for you All Access members. You know that,
- 27:19Speaker 1: you non All Access members, you probably know that too.
- 27:23Speaker 1: You probably also know how you can get the rest
- 27:25Speaker 1: of this after party, How you can get AD free listening,
- 27:27Speaker 1: how you can get an extra episode of Disgraceland every month.
- 27:31Speaker 1: It is by becoming an All Access member, and if
- 27:34Speaker 1: you do so on Patreon, now you're going to get
- 27:36Speaker 1: entrance into that after party live stream that I was
- 27:39Speaker 1: talking about as well. You got to go to disgracelampod
- 27:42Speaker 1: dot com slash membership to become an all Access member.
- 27:45Speaker 1: All right. Also from the realm of things that we're
- 27:48Speaker 1: considering doing here at the show to make this a
- 27:50Speaker 1: more valuable experience for you guys, is letting the all
- 27:53Speaker 1: Access members pick the All Access episodes, that extra full
- 27:59Speaker 1: episode that you're going to get per month. How does
- 28:01Speaker 1: that sound. That's something we're thinking about doing. Very close
- 28:04Speaker 1: to pulling the trigger on that disgrace landpod dot com
- 28:06Speaker 1: slash membership. We're gonna take a quick break back in flash.
- 28:25Speaker 1: All right, we are back before we wrap up, however,
- 28:28Speaker 1: go get your tickets Disgraceland live streams coming on October ninth,
- 28:31Speaker 1: moment dot co slash Disgraceland. All right, I'm about to
- 28:34Speaker 1: get out, but before I do, before next week's episode
- 28:36Speaker 1: on Matthew Perry, there will be a rewind episode from
- 28:39Speaker 1: our archive popping up in your feed. Speaking of the archive,
- 28:42Speaker 1: we mentioned Benmontage, a keyboard extraordinaire from Tom Petty's Heartbreakers,
- 28:47Speaker 1: and we of course have an episode on Tom Petty
- 28:49Speaker 1: in our archive episode number ninety four, released on January
- 28:53Speaker 1: twenty fifth, twenty twenty two. I love this episode gets
- 28:56Speaker 1: into the weird Arson involving his house and the burning
- 29:00Speaker 1: down to his house and all that. You're gonna love it.
- 29:01Speaker 1: If you haven't heard it, go check that out. We
- 29:03Speaker 1: also mentioned Flee from the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and
- 29:05Speaker 1: though we don't have an episode on the Chili Peppers,
- 29:07Speaker 1: we do have an episode on Chet Baker. What does
- 29:10Speaker 1: Chet Baker fame jazz joke you have to do with
- 29:12Speaker 1: Flee from the Red Hot Chili Peppers? Well, just as
- 29:15Speaker 1: Flea acted in My Own Private Idaho with River Phoenix.
- 29:18Speaker 1: I but he didn't know that, or maybe he did,
- 29:19Speaker 1: who knows. Flee also appeared alongside Chet Baker in the
- 29:22Speaker 1: excellent documentary Let's Get Lost. Okay, if you want those
- 29:26Speaker 1: James Dean of Jazz romance vibes, you want to explore
- 29:29Speaker 1: the weird deaths of Chet Baker and hear about his
- 29:31Speaker 1: days as a cat burglar while also being a famed
- 29:34Speaker 1: trumpet player, then check out our Chet Baker episode from
- 29:37Speaker 1: September ninth, twenty twenty that's episode number sixty three. We
- 29:40Speaker 1: also mentioned Sofia Coppola. Sofia Coppola's dad directed The Godfather.
- 29:44Speaker 1: The Godfather starred al Pacino. Al Pacino Is episode one
- 29:47Speaker 1: hundred and eighty eight released just a couple of months
- 29:49Speaker 1: ago on July thirtieth, So you get that for you
- 29:52Speaker 1: if you're ready for beginning right around that time, Okay,
- 29:56Speaker 1: July of this year, twenty twenty four, right around the time,
- 29:58Speaker 1: a little bit after the al Pacino episode, beginning around
- 30:01Speaker 1: the time we released the Metallica episode, the Britney Murphy
- 30:03Speaker 1: episode from a couple weeks ago. Right around that time,
- 30:06Speaker 1: we started to experience a new jump in listenership. So
- 30:09Speaker 1: I just want to say thank you to all the
- 30:11Speaker 1: new listeners out there. I continue to bang this drum
- 30:13Speaker 1: about our archive, and I want you guys to know
