- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Tuesday, it's the 17th of
- 0:15March and you have joined me on an awesome day.
- 0:19Today's the day. We continue to read through Mark
- 0:22and boy, today is Parables and miracles.
- 0:26Parables and miracles. Well, to be more precise, 4
- 0:28parables and a phenomenal miracle.
- 0:31This is Jesus in the thick of His ministry as we hear Him
- 0:35teaching and proving that He is more powerful than the elements
- 0:40themselves. How fantastic, Holy Spirit, open
- 0:44up our hearts to see Jesus anew, to see you afresh, and to be
- 0:50arrested by all that you have to show us and teach us.
- 0:56All right, friends, let's do it. Let's read together.
- 0:58Mark chapter 4. Once again, Jesus began teaching
- 1:12by the Lakeshore. A very large crowd soon gathered
- 1:16around him, so he got into a boat.
- 1:19Then he sat in the boat while all the people remained on the
- 1:22shore. He taught them by telling
- 1:24stories in the form of parables such as this one.
- 1:28Listen. A farmer went out to plant some
- 1:30seed. As he scattered it across his
- 1:33field, some of the seed fell on a footpath and the birds came
- 1:37and ate it. Other seed fell on shallow soil
- 1:40with underlying rock. The seed sprouted quickly
- 1:43because the soil was shallow, but the plant soon wilted under
- 1:47the hot sun, and since it didn't have deep roots, it died.
- 1:52Other seed fell among thorns that grew up and choked out the
- 1:55tender plants, so they produced no grain.
- 1:57Still other seeds fell on fertile soil, and they sprouted,
- 2:02grew and produced a crop. That was 3060 and even 100 times
- 2:06as much as had been planted then.
- 2:09He said anyone with ears to hear should listen and understand.
- 2:16Later, when Jesus was alone with the 12 disciples and with the
- 2:19others who were gathered around, they asked him what the parables
- 2:22meant. He replied, You are permitted to
- 2:26understand the secret of the Kingdom of God.
- 2:28But I use parables for everything I say to outsiders so
- 2:33that the Scriptures might be fulfilled.
- 2:36When they see what I do, they will learn nothing.
- 2:39When they hear what I say, they will not understand.
- 2:42Otherwise they will turn to me and be forgiven.
- 2:46Then Jesus said to them, If you can't understand the meaning of
- 2:50this parable, how will you understand all the other
- 2:53parables? The farmer plants seed by taking
- 2:56God's Word to others. The seed that fell on the
- 2:59footpath represents those who hear the message only to have
- 3:03Satan come at once and take it away.
- 3:05The seed on the rocky soil represents those who hear the
- 3:09message and immediately receive it with joy.
- 3:12But since they don't have deep roots, they don't last long.
- 3:15They fall the way as soon as they have problems or are
- 3:18persecuted for believing God's Word.
- 3:21The seed that falls among the thorns represents others who
- 3:24hear God's Word, but all too quickly the message is crowded
- 3:29out by the warriors of this life, the lure of wealth and the
- 3:32desire for other things. So no fruit is produced.
- 3:37And the seed that fell on good soil represents those who hear
- 3:40and accept God's Word and produce a harvest of 3060 or
- 3:44even 100 times as much as had been planted.
- 3:48Then Jesus asked them, would anyone light a lamp and then put
- 3:53it under a basket or under a bed?
- 3:55Of course not. A lamp is placed on a stand
- 3:58where it's light will shine. For everything that is hidden
- 4:02will eventually be brought into the open, and every secret will
- 4:06be brought to light. Anyone with ears to hear should
- 4:10listen and understand. Then, he added, pay close
- 4:14attention to what you hear. The closer you listen, the more
- 4:18understanding you will be given, and you will receive even more.
- 4:22To those who listen to my teaching, more understanding
- 4:25will be given, but for those who are not listening, even what
- 4:29little understanding they have will be taken away from them.
- 4:35Jesus also said the Kingdom of God is like a farmer who
- 4:38scatters seeds on the ground night and day.
- 4:41While he's asleep or awake. The seed sprouts and grows, but
- 4:46he does not understand how it happens.
- 4:49The earth produces the crops on its own.
- 4:52First the leaf blade pushes through, then the heads of wheat
- 4:56are formed, and finally the grain ripens.
- 4:59And as soon as the grain is ready, the Father comes and
- 5:02harvests it with a sickle for the harvest.
- 5:04Time has come, Jesus said. How can I describe the Kingdom
- 5:10of God? What story should I use to
- 5:12illustrate it? It's like a mustard seed planted
- 5:16in the ground. It is the smallest of all seeds,
- 5:20but it becomes the largest of all plants.
- 5:22It grows long branches, and birds can make nests in its
- 5:26shade. Jesus used many similar stories
- 5:30and illustrations to teach the people as much as they could
- 5:33understand. In fact, in his public ministry,
- 5:37he never taught without using parables.
- 5:40But afterward, when he was alone with his disciples, he explained
- 5:43everything to them. As evening came, Jesus said to
- 5:48his disciples, Let's cross to the other side of the lake.
- 5:52So they took Jesus in the boat and started out leaving the
- 5:55crowds behind, although other boats followed.
- 5:59But soon a fierce storm came up. High waves were breaking into
- 6:03the boat, and it began to fill with water.
- 6:06Jesus was sleeping at the back of the boat with his head on a
- 6:09cushion. The disciples woke him up
- 6:12shouting, Teacher, don't you care that we're going to drown?
- 6:16When Jesus woke up, he rebuked the wind and said to the waves,
- 6:20Silence, be still. Suddenly the wind stopped and
- 6:26there was a great calm. Then he asked them, Why are you
- 6:30afraid? Do you still have no faith?
- 6:34The disciples were absolutely terrified.
- 6:38Who is this man? They asked each other.
- 6:41Even the wind and waves obey him.
- 6:54Oh Jesus, you are incredible. Yes, even the wind and the waves
- 6:59obey you because you are the creating God, the Master of
- 7:03everything. And you have given us this gift
- 7:07of faith that grows in our hearts that draws US ever nearer
- 7:11to you. Lord, I pray that as you spoke
- 7:14in this chapter that we would not hide that, that we would put
- 7:19this life changing faith on a stand and like a lamp it would
- 7:24shine through us to bring your Kingdom to the world in which we
- 7:29live. May your game changing love and
- 7:33presence be so evident in US and the way that we live.
- 7:39You are incredible and we love you and we just invite you
- 7:44deeper and deeper into our life to mould us to be your people of
- 7:49this new covenant that you've brought.
- 7:51I'm going to pray this in your wonderful and incredible name,
- 7:55Jesus, Amen.
