- 0:01Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding
- 0:04count. The number of the Beast for it
- 0:06is the number of a man, and his number is six hundred threescore
- 0:11and six, hey listeners. This is Nick from scripture
- 0:15Central, and today's podcast addresses, the question, why did
- 0:19John state that the beasts number is 666 after being exiled
- 0:28to Patmos, Apostle, John? On saw a magnificent Vision that
- 0:31has since been placed as the last book of the New Testament.
- 0:35This Vision pertains to the historical events of John's day
- 0:39as well as to the latter days preceding.
- 0:41The second coming because John's Vision frequently uses symbolic
- 0:45language and images. Its meanings may not always be
- 0:49immediately apparent. One of the symbolic terms that
- 0:52John employed involves Gematria a Jewish system of thought that
- 0:56assigns a numerical value to a word or phrase.
- 1:00Well, this practice may seem odd to Modern readers Richard, di
- 1:03Draper and Michael D. Roads point out.
- 1:06Most ancient people did not have a separate numbering system and
- 1:10alphabet. So letters, also served as
- 1:12numbers as a result. Any given name, could be
- 1:16translated into a number, the first letter in Greek and
- 1:19Hebrew. For example, had the numerical
- 1:21value of the number 1 and so on by adding up the values for each
- 1:26letter, a wide array of numbers could be achieved.
- 1:29In Revelation chapter 13, John sees a vision of a dragon and a
- 1:33beast who persecute the Church of God.
- 1:36Regarding the Beast John States. Here is wisdom.
- 1:40Let him that hath understanding count.
- 1:43The number of the Beast for it is the number of a man, and his
- 1:47number is six hundred threescore and six this appears to be an
- 1:52example of a specialized use of Gematria called Isis Fe, which
- 1:57is more properly understood as an Phrase name or idea that is
- 2:02conveyed numerically rather than literally it is especially
- 2:06apparent. That John's description of 666
- 2:09is an example of Isis. Fe given that it is described as
- 2:13being the number of a man Lincoln H blue, Mel and Thomas a
- 2:17women identified, this phrase as a Loosely adaptable formula to
- 2:22Mark. Isis, Fe in a given text, thus
- 2:26the number can be viewed as an encoded message that John's
- 2:29audience. Especially those with a Jewish
- 2:31background. May have been able to discern.
- 2:33This is also led to many speculations about the identity
- 2:37of this Beast by later audiences.
- 2:39The challenge with Gematria and Isis Fe, is that any number of
- 2:44words or names can have the same numerical value.
- 2:47Thus leaving uncertain any suggested solution, however,
- 2:51various Solutions have been proposed.
- 2:54One of the most widely accepted theories is that this number
- 2:57refers to Nero who Did the first official Roman persecution of
- 3:02the Christian church, when transliterated into Greek his
- 3:06name would be near on Caesar and when spelled with the Hebrew,
- 3:10alphabet, its numerical value. Is 666.
- 3:15Interestingly, some early manuscripts of Revelation found
- 3:18in Latin speaking areas of the church state that the number of
- 3:21the Beast is 616 this same number occurs, when Nero's Latin
- 3:27name Nero Caesar is spelled And in Hebrew, John's immediate
- 3:32historical setting is relevant to this identification.
- 3:35While many early Christians, believed the Book of Revelation
- 3:37to have been written during the missions rain in ad 81 through
- 3:4196 others, believe that it was written a generation earlier
- 3:45during Nero's reign in. Ad 54 through 68, which would
- 3:49make the numbers designation as Nero immediately applicable for
- 3:53John's time, both Nero and domitian were famous for their
- 3:57persecution of the Christians. Thus the Should as a beast
- 4:01persecuting, the church would be an app title for either Emperor.
- 4:05Yet while the number 666 cannot be easily tracked to do Mission.
- 4:10Even if Revelation had been authored, during the missions,
- 4:13rain rumors spread throughout the Mediterranean that Nero did
- 4:17not actually die in ad 68, but had fled to Parthia where he was
- 4:22raising a huge Army to come back and Destroy Rome.
- 4:26While Nero ultimately did not return.
- 4:28It could have been a Reminder to the Christians of what they had
- 4:31experienced earlier and were experiencing again, under do
- 4:35missions, rain the use of Isis, Fe, and inscriptions regarding
- 4:38Nero has also been attested, allowing the rider to State,
- 4:41what he was. Apparently afraid to say, in
- 4:43public one such inscription reads a calculation new Nero,
- 4:49his mother slew. This Isis, Fe utilizes, the
- 4:52numerical values for the Greek name Nero, and the phrase, his
- 4:56mother slew giving each phrase in the inscription.
- 4:59The new Oracle equivalent of 1,005, given Nero's persecution
- 5:04against the Christians, in Rome viewing him.
- 5:07As a beast, that helped the dragon symbolically understood
- 5:10to be the devil persecute. The church would have made a lot
- 5:13of sense. In the early Christian Church
- 5:16Draper and roads have also presented another hypothesis
- 5:19regarding the meaning of the number suggesting that it
- 5:22actually refers to the Beast itself.
- 5:25When the Greek word for Beast Therrien is spelled in Hebrew
- 5:29the numerical. Equivalent is 666 by employing
- 5:33this meaning Draper and Roads argue that John is asking for
- 5:37moral discernment in order to avoid being entrapped by the
- 5:40Beast. Furthermore, the number six
- 5:43itself stands in sharp contrast to the number 7 which is used as
- 5:48God's number as such six would then be that which comes closest
- 5:53to Perfection but misses the mark and falls short of its
- 5:57potential repeating this imperfect Three times
- 6:00intensifies, the idea of incompleteness and failure,
- 6:04while also suggesting a condition of deep spiritual
- 6:07wickedness. This case may be strengthened
- 6:10when compared with the next part of John's Vision in Revelation,
- 6:13chapter 14, which describes hosts of the 144,000, who carry
- 6:20the Seal of Christ on their foreheads.
- 6:23Thus, there is a marked spiritual contrast between these
- 6:26righteous Saints who were sealed on their forehead.
- 6:29Ed's and those who had been marked by the beast in their
- 6:32right hands and forehead. When viewed in this symbolic
- 6:36light, the great righteousness of the high priest mentioned in
- 6:39Revelation, chapter 14 stands opposite, to the multitudes of
- 6:44the wicked who follow the dragon and the Beast, other
- 6:47interpretations have been put forward in an attempt to
- 6:50identify the Beast with a variety of people or
- 6:52organizations. Although each has various
- 6:55challenges in their interpretation, ultimately, the
- 6:58meaning of this number has not Been addressed in modern
- 7:01Revelation because many aspects of the Book of Revelation deal,
- 7:04not only with John's time, but also with the time immediately
- 7:07preceding the second coming. It is possible that the Beast
- 7:11and it's number could have multiple identifications or
- 7:15fulfillments. One of the most insightful,
- 7:17scriptural text in relation to the Book of Revelation comes
- 7:20from The Book of Mormon after Nephi saw a vision of his own
- 7:24immediate times and of his people's future, he saw one of
- 7:28The Twelve Apostles of the The lamb this Apostle who was
- 7:31identified as John would write the remainder of all the things.
- 7:36They also many things which have been and he shall also, right.
- 7:40Concerning the end of the world. In other words, John's writings.
- 7:43According to Nephi, Encompass, the past present and future,
- 7:48Richard neitzel, holzapfel and Thomas a women.
- 7:50Took this view stating that John may have been expressing his
- 7:53understanding, that, the beasts of the latter days would be
- 7:56Wicked. In some of the ways that Nero
- 7:58was the Unawareness of John's historical setting including the
- 8:03Roman persecutions under Nero may help modern readers Identify
- 8:07some of the symbols John employed including those
- 8:11seemingly targeted against Rome. It is important to remember that
- 8:15whatever form of persecution. This Beast may represent whether
- 8:19past present or future blessings of peace and protection have
- 8:23been promised to the Disciples of Jesus Christ.
- 8:26According to Nephi, the Lord will preserve the Righteous by
- 8:30his power, even if it's so be that the fullness of his wrath
- 8:34must come and the righteous be preserved even unto the
- 8:37destruction of their enemies by fire and the righteous need, not
- 8:41fear for their those who shall not be confounded as we
- 8:46continuously rely on Jesus Christ.
- 8:48And his atonement all will be made, right?
- 8:51And eventually Christ's disciples shall see his face and
- 8:55his name shall be in their foreheads and there shall be no
- 8:58night there. And they, They need no candle,
- 9:01neither light of the Sun, for the Lord, God giveth them light
- 9:04and they shall reign forever and ever.
