Transcript
- 0:39What's up everybody? You are listening to yet another
- 0:42edition of Cocaine Willy, the official K state representative
- 0:46on the college huddle. I'm your commissioner, Bob
- 0:49Trollsby, and as always, I'm joined by my Co hosts, the good
- 0:52chef Andre Napier and fireball, Matt Marcini.
- 0:56And tonight, we are talking. Finally, at long last, Coach
- 1:01Tang has been fired for cause by K State.
- 1:08Yeah, we'll, we'll get into that.
- 1:09We'll get into that momentarily. Before we get into the actual
- 1:12content of the episode, we're going to give a shout out to our
- 1:15sponsor, Auntie Maze Parlor, located at 616 N 12th St. in the
- 1:20heart of Aggieville in Manhattan, KS.
- 1:23Auntie Maze, they've been in business for 50 515252 years
- 1:28running and it's an absolute must visit destination in
- 1:31Aggieville on game days and school nights alike.
- 1:34Looking at their events, trivia smack down Wednesday, February
- 1:3818th. I guess tonight if you're
- 1:40listening to this tomorrow morning they've got win a gig
- 1:44Part 1 Frog Wizard edition win a gig.
- 1:48I think they do this every year, every couple of years where they
- 1:51do. It's basically like a battle of
- 1:53the bands. Win a gig like you win the
- 1:56opportunity to have a gig. It's not a frog frog gig.
- 1:59Right, right. No frog gigging.
- 2:01No frog gigging happening as far as I know.
- 2:04Yeah, when a gig is back, 2 bands will have a chance to win
- 2:07a gig. This year's Frog Wizard Festival
- 2:09in downtown MHK. So.
- 2:12That. Is Thursday February 19th and
- 2:15then on Saturday. Jesus Christ, taxi driver
- 2:19playing an Auntie Maze parlor with pine cocktails next week.
- 2:23Thursday. February 24th happening at the
- 2:28Parlor. Looking at the cocktail of the
- 2:30week, any any guesses? Oh my God, the John Daly.
- 2:35The John Daly. Oh shit, damn, how many of them
- 2:39did you have, brother? That's that.
- 2:42One too many, one too many jewels of spring.
- 2:45It's the jewel of spring, Jewel of spring, El Destilador
- 2:53tequila, Saint Germain, lemon juice, honey and lavender
- 2:56bitters. Lavender I you know, I've tried
- 3:01it. I just can't, can't get it, get
- 3:04into it. That has my name written all
- 3:06over it. Love anything with St. big fan
- 3:10of the Saint Germain, but yeah, that's that's Auntie Mace best
- 3:13bar in Aggieville. Give them give them a visit.
- 3:17Check them out. Get a koozie.
- 3:19Wildcat country. Let's ride koozies for sale down
- 3:22there in in the parlor. But yeah, check them out.
- 3:25Craft cocktails, draft beers, everything in between.
- 3:28All right, Coach Tang. Coach Tang was fired for cause
- 3:33on Sunday morning. Coach Tang met on Sunday morning
- 3:37with Jean Taylor and university officials to inform him that he
- 3:40had been fired for cause, apparently due to the comments
- 3:43that he made following the Cincinnati game last week, which
- 3:47I think happened the same night we recorded our last pod.
- 3:50So we've not covered anything since that Cincinnati game.
- 3:53The announcement was made later that afternoon and evening.
- 3:56There's rumblings all over KSO go power cattle of the, you
- 4:00know, the whole 9 yards about. Something was imminent.
- 4:04An announcement was going to be made sooner rather than later
- 4:07was what I had heard. And it certainly came sooner.
- 4:10I wasn't expecting it to drop on Sunday night.
- 4:12I was expecting maybe a day or two after that, maybe later in
- 4:16that week. But no, he has coached his last
- 4:19game and it came in a relatively better effort against a good
- 4:24Houston team, which was surprising.
- 4:26But with the the scout coming from coaches Abdi Bashir and
- 4:30Nate Johnson prior to the game, who also filled in on the
- 4:34pregame radio responsibilities for Coach Tang and the assistant
- 4:38assistant coaches. Yeah, Matt Driscoll, he's been
- 4:42announced as the interim. He's coaching the game tonight
- 4:44against Baylor, against Scott Drew, which is everybody on this
- 4:47staff's mentor. Just a very strange situation
- 4:51could be happening as we're recording this pod tonight.
- 4:53So we'll have our eyes on the game.
- 4:55We'll all be watching that. Gene apparently also told the
- 4:59Mercury at some point that he had offered for Tang to coach
- 5:03out the rest of the season. I don't think you're firing a
- 5:09coach for 'cause if you're also off that, that one is the real
- 5:12head scratcher for me. And now the national media is
- 5:16piling on K State. Apparently.
- 5:18Aside from Mike Wilbon and Tony Kornheiser from Pardon the
- 5:21Interruption and folks closer to the situation who aren't part of
- 5:25the match, national media are. Obviously, we all know what Tang
- 5:29has said and some of the antics and the things that have
- 5:31happened. Obviously, multiple players
- 5:34leaving the team midway through the season.
- 5:37It's happened in each of the last three seasons.
- 5:39Now, at this point, there's a lot of stuff going on here, but
- 5:43you're trying to fire for 'cause you're trying to avoid paying
- 5:45the $18.7 million buyout. And we all know that from
- 5:50residents. This is probably going to end up
- 5:52with K State paying some amount of money between zero and $18.7
- 5:57million because Tang is fighting this from a legal perspective.
- 6:02So that's the prelude reaction to the news.
- 6:08He's gone. He's he's gone, Chef.
- 6:13He's gone. He is gone.
- 6:15It is a new era, a new dawn of Kansas State basketball.
- 6:19It's it is crazy that you know it.
- 6:22It came when it did. And with the reasoning that they
- 6:25said for their 'cause I guess I, I, I'm honestly shocked that
- 6:32they could try to pull cause out of that.
- 6:34And it's just, I know the language in his contract is very
- 6:37vague and very open-ended. But I mean, that goes both ways
- 6:41that like the lawyers for Tang, I mean, if they're worth
- 6:46anything, they can lawyer their way out of a, a paper bag.
- 6:51They should be able to find a way to Tang's kidding upward of
- 6:55more than half of whatever this buyout is, if not the whole
- 6:59thing. Yeah, it's it's honestly, I
- 7:04mean, we it needed to be done, though, so that like no matter
- 7:07what you say, like with the cause or anything, it this
- 7:10needed to happen. It was it was becoming too
- 7:14regular of a thing for us to be getting smacked around by a Big
- 7:2012 team just repeatedly. And to like to you like to your
- 7:25point, Bob, you know when Abbi coach Abbi Bashir and coach Nate
- 7:29Johnson are formulating the game plan and we are praising that
- 7:34they only got beat by what they lose by 1415.
- 7:39That's not OK that I know it's Houston, but at home getting
- 7:44absolutely dump trucked, it's not good.
- 7:48So yeah, it was time for Coach Tang to go.
- 7:51Now the pay and all that stuff, it's not coming from my wallet,
- 7:54so I don't really care. But you know, it's just it
- 7:58needed to happen. It happened.
- 7:59Let's move on. Coach Tang does not need to be
- 8:02spoken on very much more, really.
- 8:05Wow. I, you know, I was kind of
- 8:08wondering what your thought was on this whole thing and was not
- 8:11expecting that I was going to have the same opinion as you,
- 8:15But I, this one is like, it's just very like it's, it's funny.
- 8:24It's also not funny because I, I don't know, I'm just, I, I,
- 8:34it's, it's incredible that it happened so quickly And I, I do
- 8:40find it incredible that K state is going to fire with some type
- 8:46of cause. Again, I agree with you that I
- 8:50think it's very vague. You know, it's been hard.
- 8:54I've been having trouble kind of staying close to the topic on
- 9:00message boards because I think it's extremely toxic.
- 9:03Like this topic has become very toxic for sides of this fanbase.
- 9:11And in the grand scheme of things, you know, three years
- 9:16ago or two years ago, whenever you know, this contract was, was
- 9:20signed, it's two parties that are putting their name on this
- 9:23contract. And the way that I see it from
- 9:28my perspective, K State is yes, trying to find a way to not pay
- 9:32$18 million. I also believe it's totally OK
- 9:38for Jerome Tang to be going for $18,000,000 because if, if we're
- 9:43setting a precedent of how coach, you know, if, if there's
- 9:49stuff behind the scenes and nobody knows, then this could be
- 9:53two days. You know, the conversation we
- 9:55could be having right now is going to be in two days known
- 9:59void because there's this and that and the other thing that
- 10:01happened behind the scenes and and all this.
- 10:04The discovery part is kind of like the, the, the ace for all
- 10:08of this. Like if, if there's really
- 10:10skeletons in the closet on both sides, nobody wants it to go
- 10:14there. And it's kind of just like
- 10:16you're, you're playing chicken to see who's going to budget
- 10:19first. Yeah, but I think it's a tough
- 10:22precedent for having your coach say things publicly about your
- 10:28team that are negative when in the grand scheme of things.
- 10:34I think people like the time frame of when he said it after
- 10:39the Cincinnati game. If he said that after the
- 10:42Bowling Green game, I feel like it's not going to it's not going
- 10:46to get as much Flack as it did last week.
- 10:49I really. Believe that what we wanted I I
- 10:52was on this podcast saying that exact thing like.
- 10:55Yes, like the. The baby in these players is not
- 10:58getting to their their attention, but like you said, it
- 11:01was 10 games too late brother. I think I said the exact same
- 11:08thing as you, Matt. Just now on Twitter.
- 11:10I said if if this had come after bowling, I don't think we're
- 11:15even having this discussion today.
- 11:17No. Why?
- 11:18Why is it happening after Cincinnati been happening in the
- 11:23game where things very clearly went off the rails for the
- 11:26entirety of the rest of the? Season, I mean, I think it's
- 11:30yeah, he, yeah, I think it's a little bit of a too little too
- 11:33late situation. I'm sure looking back on it,
- 11:37maybe, you know, he feel, you know, maybe he wishes he said it
- 11:41earlier on in the season instead of a game, you know, at home
- 11:45against Cincinnati where you've already lost five or six games
- 11:48in a row. And you kind of a week prior
- 11:53with the Iowa State postgame press conference, you know,
- 11:57you're saying kind of the opposite of what you said
- 12:00against, you know, after Cincinnati.
- 12:03But I, I think it just sets a tough precedent that, you know,
- 12:06coaches, coaches should have high expectations for their
- 12:10players, especially players that are now getting paid.
- 12:15You know, they're, they're a financial piece of the team that
- 12:19you're putting together, like the financial component of the
- 12:23team that you're putting together.
- 12:25So I, I believe that coaches should have the ability to save
- 12:30some of that stuff. And so with K State kind of
- 12:35using that as kind of a main piece publicly right now to,
- 12:40we're going to fire with 'cause I, I just think, I think it's a
- 12:45tough president to, to set not just for K State, but for other
- 12:50programs that may look at this as an opportunity for, you know,
- 12:55a head coach that they feel the same way about Jerome Tang did
- 12:59for K State to, to move in that direction.
- 13:02I'm sure there are some schools that are going to be interested
- 13:04to see how this all turns out. But I, it's hard because I
- 13:08think, I think there's been some toxicity on like both sides of
- 13:12this. And we do have to let this play
- 13:15out and see, you know, if it gets to a point where there is
- 13:19this discovery and there's these things that maybe, you know,
- 13:22we're going on behind the scenes that the average person like us,
- 13:27you know, isn't going to really know about.
- 13:28OK, I got a couple thoughts. I mean there my brains all over
- 13:32the place, especially when you guys start, you know, going down
- 13:35and letting your thoughts out there.
- 13:36One, I'm going to play a little bit of devil's advocate and I
- 13:39and make me make this sound as stupid as you possibly can from
- 13:45your from your rebuttals. But from my perspective, if I
- 13:50was K State with the language that's in that about what
- 13:54happened after the Cincinnati press conference, you've got
- 13:58players on this team that have come out and you know that
- 14:02aren't on the team for mental mental health and all of those
- 14:05things. And you say that they're not
- 14:08going to be on like publicly, that they're not going to be on
- 14:11the team. They're an embarrassment.
- 14:12They're saying all this thing that you're damning them in the
- 14:16public light. Now, mind you, maybe you can say
- 14:18that in a locker room. You could say that.
- 14:20But to say that publicly is, you know, maybe that does shatter
- 14:26fragile minds of players in said locker room.
- 14:30And that could be a breaking of that, that language in that
- 14:34contract. I don't know.
- 14:36Maybe that is what what they're going on.
- 14:39But I'm not a lawyer. None of us are lawyers.
- 14:41Not that I can. Tell no, no, none of us are
- 14:44lawyers. But the one thing I, I do want
- 14:46to say on this is when we, when we talk about the four cause
- 14:49piece of this, if this happened after the Cincinnati game, it,
- 14:53it, it sounds like it took, we all know that lawyers move
- 14:57relatively slow when it comes to any kind of major decision like
- 15:01this. It took them three business days
- 15:05plus Saturday plus probably parts of Sunday to feel like
- 15:11they were in a confident enough place as a as a legal group, as
- 15:15it as the lawyers of the university, lawyers of the
- 15:17athletic department, whatever. They felt com comfortable and
- 15:21confident enough to say, hey, Jean, yeah, we we are
- 15:24comfortable with you going forward with this.
- 15:27What that says to me is there's either a lot more dirt on Tang.
- 15:32They feel like they can settle this in a way where they can
- 15:35meet in the middle somewhere and not end up paying more than they
- 15:39would with just the buyout itself.
- 15:42I, I just, I think they've probably got enough of a case
- 15:45here and the language is vague enough within the contract to
- 15:50where. And, and again, I, I hope Jean
- 15:54just shuts his mouth and doesn't say anything about this.
- 15:57I, I don't know that we needed a press conference on Sunday to
- 16:00talk about it. I don't think he should be
- 16:02getting quotes to the Mercury about it.
- 16:05And Gina, as as a former PR major myself, like public
- 16:09relations for the ones like, don't you get out ahead of the
- 16:13message, but at the same time, like you need to have a
- 16:16consistent message. If you're in his message.
- 16:19All is inconsistent with what he said in the press conference,
- 16:22what was in the statement and what he's now telling the
- 16:24Mercury. But so like that all can now be
- 16:28used against him by Tang's lawyers and in the legal
- 16:30proceedings. So I, I just, I guess my kind of
- 16:33rambling here. My first point is I feel like
- 16:35they, the lawyers at K State, K State athletics had to have had
- 16:40enough confidence in knowing that they had enough of a case
- 16:43here to where Jean could move forward with firing for cause in
- 16:47this situation based on the terminology in his contract.
- 16:50So just everybody should just know that because I know these
- 16:53lawyers don't make those decisions lightly.
- 16:55I know Jean Taylor isn't making this decision lightly when two
- 16:58months ago he's on a Colin Klein's press conference, you
- 17:02know, bragging about hiring a first time head coach in Jerome
- 17:05Tang bloating about it. So that's that's where I would
- 17:10land with this. But again, I think the gear is
- 17:13settled. We're going to meet somewhere in
- 17:14the middle. I hope for K state's sake it's
- 17:17not any more than that 101112 million dollar amount.
- 17:22Who knows what the legal fees are going to look like for this.
- 17:24Obviously the K state lawyers are more than likely in house.
- 17:28You have to pay court fees and and all that other stuff.
- 17:30So it's going to be interesting the.
- 17:33Other thing is I saw a lot of people back, you know, it's
- 17:38been, it's been going on for quite a while saying how ugly
- 17:41this contract is. And you know how K State kind of
- 17:44got duped and that $18.7 million number is so astronomically
- 17:49large and it is large. But at the time that number
- 17:54needed to be high to protect like it it works both the buyout
- 17:58kind of works both ways. And it needed it needed to be a
- 18:01large sum because of where you were projecting Coach Tang to
- 18:05bring this program to and the heat that maybe may or may not
- 18:10have been from Arkansas, which I think it was very real.
- 18:12But you know, at the time, they needed that number to be sky
- 18:17high to protect Kansas State's property in Jerome Tang and make
- 18:24so that he just can't be poached and that you start over again.
- 18:27So I, I can, I get it from Kansas State perspectives.
- 18:30And they kind of made their bed and now they have to lay in it.
- 18:32I honestly think they should just own up to it and just pay
- 18:35it. But that's just me.
- 18:38Yeah, Yeah. It's just going to be very
- 18:42interesting. I mean, for K State, A, a win is
- 18:45going to be anything under $18 million, right.
- 18:48So I imagine that no matter what, they've gotten the donor
- 18:56base to commit to $18 million. And so now it's the plan to get,
- 19:03you know, save as much as you can on that.
- 19:08I think as outsiders now it's just waiting to hear more
- 19:10information and seeing how this goes, seeing how long this goes.
- 19:15I, you know, I won't be done in 48 hours or won't be done in 48
- 19:21days. I, I, I just don't know.
- 19:24So now we're on to better and brighter things.
- 19:30Finding, you know, who's going to be the, the, the next leader
- 19:34of this program and hearing, you know, what potential names might
- 19:38be interested. So it's going to be pretty
- 19:40exciting. Yeah, and we've got head coach,
- 19:45interim head coach Matt Driscoll.
- 19:47My dad affectionately called him Jerome's little elf.
- 19:50Matt Driscoll steps in, is the interim head coach for the
- 19:53duration of the season. And he's he's getting his start
- 19:57tonight against Baylor, which is tipping off as we speak as we're
- 20:00recording this. So again, we're going to keep
- 20:02our eyes on that. But looking at the rest of the
- 20:04season, you've got, what, 10:00-ish games?
- 20:07Less some some, some along those lines.
- 20:10Got Baylor, Tech, Colorado, TCU, West Virginia, KU plus and in
- 20:15Big 12 tournament 123456788 games remaining for the season
- 20:20at at at a minimum. What's your outlook for the rest
- 20:23of the season? Matt Driscoll obviously has been
- 20:26a head coach. He's never coached at the Power
- 20:284, Power 5 level, granted as a head coach, but you know, he's
- 20:32had a good run in in one season in his career as a head coach
- 20:36and and I think he won a couple of regular season titles.
- 20:40I mean, do does K State win another Big 12 game this season?
- 20:45I would lean towards no. OK.
- 20:48But do. They have Utah again.
- 20:51No. No.
- 20:53Do they have? Yeah, Jamie Dixon again.
- 20:56And Oklahoma State. No, no those.
- 21:00Games. I thought they had a.
- 21:01Baylor, I think Baylor's the I think tonight's the best chance,
- 21:04but that might not age well. You think tonight's the best
- 21:07chance? I mean, the last seven games.
- 21:11Last seven games? Oh, they don't.
- 21:13Colorado. Well, it's at Colorado.
- 21:16It is at Colorado. I don't see them winning on the
- 21:18Big 12. Game, I think they'll get one.
- 21:22They're going to get one. I'd love to, I mean.
- 21:24Who do you play? Who do you play in Kansas City?
- 21:27If if the standings finish out the way they are.
- 21:29Now it would be like Colorado or yeah, he travelled.
- 21:39It would be Colorado or Utah. Well, it's possible you could
- 21:45win one game in Kansas City. Who knows if you build.
- 21:48On that would be funny. That would.
- 21:50Honestly, that would be pretty funny.
- 21:52Everybody's hopes get up for for five seconds.
- 21:55How? Funny, would you be major just a
- 21:58major upset and just win the whole thing?
- 22:02That was a deep 3 right there. Nate Johnson, baby.
- 22:05All right, we are not doing a watch along right now.
- 22:07But pay attention. Matt, do you think they'll win a
- 22:10second Big 12 game? I do, I think they will.
- 22:13I think they will win a second Big 12 game.
- 22:15It could be tonight. I look at the way they played
- 22:19against TCU in Fort Worth. They could be, I think they
- 22:21could be TCU at home or they could be West Virginia at home.
- 22:25You know, those are two games that on the road, they obviously
- 22:29fucked themselves over in the last five seconds of those games
- 22:32or whatever, but they played them competitively enough that
- 22:34makes you think, hey, you know, if they were going to win one
- 22:37more game, it would be against one of those two teams.
- 22:44So I'm going to say yes. Yeah, yeah, I'm, I'm, I'm going
- 22:48to, I'm going to lean. Yes, I think dead cat balance is
- 22:51a real thing. Coaches, they get fired their
- 22:53team after after they get fired. There's probably a stat about it
- 22:58somewhere, but I know in football it's a real thing.
- 23:01But I I, you know, I think this there's an opportunity for for
- 23:05them to go out and win this game tonight if they can play a
- 23:08functional game of basketball, which they've proven unable to
- 23:12do for a majority of the season this year.
- 23:14But how much of that was coach? How much of that was inability
- 23:18to create a roster that's cohesive, that makes any any
- 23:21kind of semblance of sense whatsoever?
- 23:24What's what's the, what's, what do you think the aftermath?
- 23:30Where does Tang? I guess I don't want to talk
- 23:33about Tang, but I mean he is, he is part of the history of Kansas
- 23:36State. What does his obviously after
- 23:40the settlement and or settlement or, you know, his buyout is
- 23:43paid? Where does he go from here?
- 23:46And how much of A heat storm is it towards K state?
- 23:51Because he seems I don't I don't I mean he seems like the kind of
- 23:54guy that would be in very much in the public eye, you know,
- 24:01kind of chirping. I would imagine they chirps a
- 24:03little bit. Arizona State fans already want
- 24:06him to be their head coach. By some act of God.
- 24:09I don't know why. Well, how do we know that that
- 24:12was not AI? No, that was that was real.
- 24:14No, that was the the PHNX, which is like the all city network.
- 24:19They cover there's a DNVR here in in Denver that and they, they
- 24:23cover all the local teams as if that's if that was a very real
- 24:27thing. And I cannot reiterate to you
- 24:29how real that was. Yeah, I, I think he's going to
- 24:34find, I mean, we saw with Mike Boynton, right?
- 24:36He ends up on the program like Michigan.
- 24:39I wouldn't be surprised if he goes back to being an assistant
- 24:42at Baylor or Texas Tech somewhere within that Scott Drew
- 24:47tree of some sort. You know Wichita State could be
- 24:51an opportunity, Paul. Miller, I left the Mike Boydon
- 24:54potential sleeper head coach. You know, not for me, not for
- 24:58me, but I just I I don't see how a program could go out and want
- 25:04to hire him at this point unless it's a low major or of what like
- 25:08a lower mid major program. I mean, who would want to hire
- 25:12him? Get this?
- 25:12He's. Getting a job, He's getting a
- 25:14job. Sure.
- 25:16He'll get a a job. I would be the.
- 25:19I would not be mad if he was at K state.
- 25:22I would not be mad. You'd not be mad.
- 25:26What if he was at K state? I would not be mad, yeah, it
- 25:31wouldn't be met on. What planet?
- 25:35We're talking about. We're talking about Sting.
- 25:38You asked the question, do you want?
- 25:40Where do you see Coach Tang going from here?
- 25:42Well, I no, you had said Mike Boydon like ended up on the
- 25:46bench like Mike Boydon did at Michigan.
- 25:49And I said Mike Boydon could be a sneaky head sleeper head coach
- 25:53at K State. And then you guys went on this
- 25:56whole thing and I didn't catch any of that.
- 25:58And I'm saying I would not be mad if Mike Boynton was the
- 26:01future head coach of K State. OK, we're we're clear now.
- 26:05We're clear now. I don't know.
- 26:07About that, but you know, I think Tang obviously does he
- 26:11want to stay in coaching? I don't know does he want to run
- 26:14orphanages? I don't know it's.
- 26:17Well, he did say, he did say he wanted to be a fired head coach
- 26:20and he would go around the world creating like orphanages with
- 26:23his wife. He's going to be a two year.
- 26:27Coach somewhere, he will be an assistant somewhere.
- 26:31I don't know if he'll be a head coach at like a low major, but I
- 26:36think he he will try and get back into the groove as an
- 26:40assistant. And yeah, that's that's what I
- 26:46think. I mean, if you're the
- 26:47Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils, hiring a guy like Tang
- 26:52would be like a home run hit for you, right?
- 26:54You would think. Or Tarleton.
- 26:59Or I don't know. No, I, I do think he's he's
- 27:05going to, I think Scott Drew's going to hire him back or
- 27:08McCall. And I mean, I do.
- 27:13I think it's going to be funny next year when we play them.
- 27:17And maybe Jerome Tang will be $18 million richer.
- 27:25What he plays us next year, I don't know.
- 27:28But more than talk about, let's talk about next year.
- 27:31Let's talk about next year. But before we get into next
- 27:34year, Heartland Beef Connection is our latest sponsor.
- 27:38We're not talking about grocery store beef.
- 27:41Heartland Beef Connection connects Kansas and Midwest
- 27:43families directly with local ranchers.
- 27:47That means no middle men and no industrial processing and no
- 27:50mass produced beef. A lot of these ranchers are
- 27:53located in Kansas, and of course plenty of them are K Staters
- 27:56themselves. Same values, same work ethic,
- 27:59just doing it out on the land instead of and you name.
- 28:03Insert your athletic venue here, football field, the basketball
- 28:08court, the track and field, whatever it might be.
- 28:12Paul, friend of the program, started Heartland Beef
- 28:15Connection to help support Midwest ranchers by matching
- 28:18them directly with families looking to buy quarter, half and
- 28:21whole beef shares. You know where your beef comes
- 28:23from, how it was raised and who raised it.
- 28:26Here's the part people don't expect.
- 28:28Not only does this beef taste better, it's actually cheaper
- 28:31per pound than grocery store beef when you buy direct.
- 28:34Better quality, more transparency, and you're not
- 28:37paying for the middle man. If you care about supporting
- 28:40Kansas agriculture, keeping money local, and eating beef
- 28:43that actually taste the beef the way beef should, this is it.
- 28:47And here's the best part, because you're listening to
- 28:49Cocaine Willie, you can get $25 off the Heartland beef
- 28:52connection match fee when you mention the podcast or use code
- 28:55at CW 25. That's code CW25 S Check out
- 29:00Heartland beef connection at heartlandbeef.net.
- 29:03Real beef, real ranchers. Better beef for your money.
- 29:07Guys, I ate beef heart on Saturday.
- 29:12Is it like a steak? Cooked it like a steak.
- 29:14I did. I did the milk.
- 29:16Like you soak it in milk like paper.
- 29:18I did that beforehand. It kind of made it less.
- 29:22Less irony. I don't know that it was my
- 29:25favorite cut of beef on the planet.
- 29:27Would I eat it again? Yeah, If I had another quarter
- 29:30or half beef share, I would find something to use it for, but it
- 29:33wasn't, it wasn't my favorite, to be honest.
- 29:35I just have to clear. I have to clear out the freezer
- 29:37so I can now go out and get my Heartland Beef Connection
- 29:41quarter share. So Paul, if you're listening to
- 29:43this, which you very well could be, I am planning on acting on
- 29:48this here within the next month or so.
- 29:51Ranking the top three internal organs from a beef.
- 29:57From a cow, the top three internal.
- 30:02Oh, they could be a cow. It can also be a steer.
- 30:04Yes. So a beef a beef a.
- 30:06Beef a beef I'm are we talking strictly?
- 30:10Where does? Where does Rocky Mountain?
- 30:12Internal organs, I mean. Can't be intramuscular.
- 30:18I'm not going out here eating tribe.
- 30:20OK. And it's not.
- 30:21Actually I I have tried that before.
- 30:24Yes. I have tried it as well, it's
- 30:26just not. It's not really.
- 30:27For me, I if I I'll give you guys a little time to think
- 30:31about it. I'm gonna go liver.
- 30:34OK. I'm gonna go tongue.
- 30:37OK, yes, Lingua. And then I mean, it's just so
- 30:43it's a toss up. It's a toss up.
- 30:48Do you wanna go like like a trite?
- 30:50Do you want to go or do you want to go?
- 30:54I mean heart is not bad. Never had it.
- 30:59I'm going to go that that's. Fine.
- 31:01Heart is my little. Heart so well, those those are
- 31:06so we can name any any muscle, right?
- 31:08Could could any kind of steak fill into this?
- 31:10An organ please. Organ please.
- 31:14It's not only a. Small play a handful.
- 31:15Of words. A tongue.
- 31:16A tongue is a muscle for whatever that's.
- 31:18Oh, that is. Hard so, as I was.
- 31:21Damn. And I've never had liver.
- 31:24I guess your skin is considered organs, so I mean you can.
- 31:29Chicharrones. OK this.
- 31:30Is something off the rails? Let's go.
- 31:35All right, So talking about next year, obviously Gene Taylor, we
- 31:40could argue whether or not Jean should or should not be the guy
- 31:43to make this hire. You know, I, I do tend to like
- 31:47Jean Taylor. I think he's made a lot of
- 31:48really great hires at K State. Tang really is kind of the
- 31:53biggest blemish on his record in my opinion.
- 31:58So I'm I'm not going to comment on that.
- 31:59I I feel fine with him making this decision.
- 32:02I hope he does have some reliance on a search firm.
- 32:05You already mentioned he was maybe going to get a search for
- 32:07him involved. That might be helpful to kind of
- 32:09cut through the noise little bit in a, in what is a very noisy
- 32:15coaching search process. One of the names that are being
- 32:18floated are are interesting. I'm not going to go through this
- 32:22whole list. I think maybe, maybe each of us
- 32:25goes through and names are top. What would our top three be?
- 32:31Top three I'm going to go, I think #1 for me is Eric Olin.
- 32:40OK. I think he's a non.
- 32:43OK, So like the criteria that I want to go with is a head
- 32:49coaching experience and I think people with turn around, you
- 32:53know, head coaching experience. So he's obviously done it.
- 32:57He was at what was it San Diego, UC San Diego turned that yeah,
- 33:01turned that program around, brought them up a level, which
- 33:05is also something I I admire. So he's taking it from 1-1
- 33:10talent level, skill level to another.
- 33:13And he kept the kept the thing going.
- 33:15New Mexico solid program right now.
- 33:18So he's number one for me and he's non regional.
- 33:21So it's not like I think he's from Alabama or something like
- 33:25that. And he spent a lot of time on
- 33:28the West Coast. You know, he's not very, you
- 33:32know, he's not a guy that's pigeonholed into one area of the
- 33:36country. I like that Huss is.
- 33:44It could go either way for me. Huss could go either way.
- 33:47And then what's the what's the guy from Utah State?
- 33:52Jared Calhoun. Calhoun.
- 33:55Is he related to Jim Calhoun? No.
- 33:58Damn, No. If only.
- 34:02Give me Jim. Give me Jim Calhoun.
- 34:04Out of retirement. 85 years old right now.
- 34:06Five years. Old Jim Calhoun would despise
- 34:11the NIL era. Oh.
- 34:14My God, yeah. Just get Jim Bayheim.
- 34:18Oh geez, yeah, he's got well, but he has a he has a kid in
- 34:25college like 4 years ago. So I don't know what he's he's,
- 34:29he's viral, viral, viral, viral. Those are my top three.
- 34:35Those are my, those are my top three.
- 34:38I think it's, I think Eric Owen is my number one by a lot.
- 34:43I think he he's distinct from all the other guys that that
- 34:47have been, you know, circulated. I think a lot of those guys can
- 34:51be interchangeable. One of them in particular, the
- 34:54guy from Saint Louis, his price tag is going to be astronomical.
- 34:59So that's not going to be fun to have to do that on top of
- 35:02probably having to pay tank his full buyout.
- 35:05So give me give me Olin. I mean, his buyout probably is
- 35:08around like $4 million or something like that.
- 35:10So yeah, give me Olin. I think you can turn this baby
- 35:14around. Yeah, Kenny, I, I agree with I,
- 35:20I like Eric Olin. He would be in my top 3.
- 35:24Calhoun would be in my top three.
- 35:26He's shown a propensity to win, which is always good.
- 35:31I think Shirts would be a really, really, really good
- 35:35hire. I also think Shirts could be a
- 35:39guy that feels comfortable in Saint Louis this year and can
- 35:44get his pick of programs, whether it be this year or he
- 35:51stays a year and, you know, waits for for something else.
- 35:57But he, I think would be a very intriguing guy, especially as
- 36:01someone who I think has a pretty good lineage of being able to
- 36:04build programs or showing success in programs.
- 36:08Now for me, I, I think it's going to get really interesting
- 36:12especially if we do hear of let's say we hear of a
- 36:15settlement in the next couple of weeks on a number from a buyout
- 36:18perspective. Because K State obviously in the
- 36:22past handful of years has shown a propensity that we are going
- 36:26to spend money. We have an NIL budget.
- 36:28We have the support financially, we have great fan support.
- 36:34Could there be coaches in the Power 5 space that are maybe at
- 36:40a mid tier school and let's say the SEC, the Big 10, the Big
- 36:47East that could go under the radar as a guy that with a
- 36:56buyout that is not insane. You go after I I'm I'm just like
- 37:03spit. I'm spitballing because I I
- 37:06think of there are a couple names in the SCCI think of like
- 37:10Mark Byington and Vanderbilt. I think his buyouts like 5
- 37:14million million dollars and he's in year 2 at Vanderbilt.
- 37:18They went to the NCAA tournament last year, their top 25 team
- 37:21this year. I think of Bucky at A and MI
- 37:24don't know his buy out but he's showing.
- 37:29Like he comes in after replacing Buzz Williams and has got A&M in
- 37:34the top half of the SEC this year.
- 37:36He had great teams at Sanford. I imagine his buy out is
- 37:40probably more than five NIL, but you never know.
- 37:42He was hired very late in the process.
- 37:45I don't know, you think of the Big 10.
- 37:49Fred Hoiberg, obviously, you know, he left the NBA to go to
- 37:54Nebraska. I don't know what his buyout is.
- 37:56I thought it was maybe like 6 or $7,000,000.
- 37:58I think I saw does Fred Hoiberg, does Fred Hoiberg want to get
- 38:03into the Big 12? Obviously from a historical
- 38:06perspective, you know, he was at Iowa State.
- 38:09So I, I do wonder if there are some coaches that will fly under
- 38:14the radar that potentially might get a call from Jean Taylor,
- 38:18depending on how much the buyouts going to be for Tang,
- 38:21because you're not going to be able to go for some of those
- 38:23guys if you're got an $18 million buyout.
- 38:27But I think from a competitiveness perspective, K
- 38:29State has, you know, compared to what some of the schools that
- 38:32are probably going to come open in the cycle, they're going to
- 38:36be one of the top ones that we, so we think of right now,
- 38:40probably Syracuse, like Syracuse is probably the number one
- 38:44that's going to be out there. But I, I, I do think Jean is
- 38:50going to open up and potentially look at some guys who aren't
- 38:56just power 5 coaches that are trying to get out of their job,
- 38:59AKA Christians. Because if he does that, I'm
- 39:03fine in a new school. Nah, I will, I can't, I do not
- 39:08want him. But I, I, I think there is kind
- 39:13of a potential grouping of coaches that you may target just
- 39:17based off of a buyout that is pretty decent.
- 39:21And you know, if you said, OK, donors, I think we have Fred
- 39:25Hoiberg. I'm just throwing this out
- 39:28there. Obviously I have no information,
- 39:29but let's say we're targeting Fred.
- 39:32Fred, he, he has shown in his two stops at Iowa State,
- 39:36Nebraska that he can build a program which transfers, he's
- 39:42done a good job in this NIL environment, especially in the
- 39:45Big 10 where you had, it has been very top heavy with
- 39:49basketball schools. Nebraska is a top ten team.
- 39:51Like that is a very impressive thing to do.
- 39:54If you can say to the donors, hey, I think we can get Fred
- 39:56Hoiberg to come Manhattan. We're not going to, you know, if
- 39:59we don't have to pay an $18 million buyout or something like
- 40:01that. I, I think there's potential
- 40:04there. So I don't know.
- 40:06I, I think we have these manageable a list of these are
- 40:10the coaches that are manageable coaches that you can get from a
- 40:14mid major or this and that. But I do think that that pool is
- 40:19going to spread to try and see if you can coax someone who
- 40:26might have a decent situation now, but with a better NIL and
- 40:31being in what's perceived to be the best basketball conference
- 40:34this year. What's Josh Pastner doing now?
- 40:39He's a UNLV. Yeah.
- 40:42No, I that's a no, no, no. No a no for the Jerry Curl guy.
- 40:49Pastner. He's got like, yeah, he's got
- 40:51like a little Jerry curl. Little Jerry.
- 40:53Curl Jesus Christ, I I don't know, I mean, I I.
- 40:59He's a young guy. Oh yeah, I know.
- 41:02He's not a young guy. He's probably in his.
- 41:06He's in. His 40s.
- 41:07He's 484848. He's 48.
- 41:11Yeah, but I, I, I being the first school means you have more
- 41:19time. You, you get to put your foot in
- 41:21the door earlier than a lot of other places.
- 41:25And you, you're putting your foot in the door.
- 41:28We're already kind of having an idea as to, Hey, this is what we
- 41:31want to do for next year. So that, that is why I, I think
- 41:35there's the potential that you hear these coaching, you know,
- 41:38we have these hot boards that were, you know, consistently
- 41:40looking at and we're not really going to know anything until the
- 41:44second week of March. So we have a lot of time.
- 41:48But I, I just, I do have to think it's going to kind of open
- 41:53up to see like, Hey all. Right.
- 41:56I got our guy. I know who we're good.
- 41:59OK. David Richmond, North Dakota
- 42:05State's basketball head coach. That would be the most Gene
- 42:11Taylor I'm. Telling you this is Gene
- 42:14Taylor's hire, David. Look him up.
- 42:18Look him up. He's got him first in the summit
- 42:21right now. Yeah, he does, doesn't he?
- 42:23Shoot Jesus Christ. David Richmond, that's my OK
- 42:27take. Take whatever Calhoun out.
- 42:31No Hus. I don't want Hus in there.
- 42:33Give me. Give me our boy.
- 42:36Owen Richmond. Yeah, Richmond's second for me.
- 42:41Give. Me.
- 42:42Yeah. Oh my God.
- 42:43OK, my, my, I'll give. I'll give my top three.
- 42:47I like Jared Calhoun is pretty quickly become like my number
- 42:51one. I think for for the job.
- 42:53I like Eric Olin. I feel like it's almost like 1A
- 42:58and 1B for those two guys, though.
- 43:00I, I, I don't feel like you can go wrong with either of those
- 43:03guys. And and this is also if you're
- 43:04going the route of up and Comer mid major, blah, blah, blah,
- 43:08blah, blah. But I do like I do like that
- 43:11both of them are in the Mountain West.
- 43:12And I I think very highly of the Mountain West is a basketball
- 43:15conference meet San Diego State. We're not too far removed from
- 43:18them being in the final four. Did that.
- 43:21That's a good basketball conference.
- 43:22When you look at the top, I would say the top five to six
- 43:25teams every every single year are generally pretty good for
- 43:29the Mountain West and and have shown and go pretty deep in the
- 43:32NCAA tournament. I think we have more Mountain
- 43:34West teams in the 1616 like five years ago than we did with PAC
- 43:3712 teams when when that was still around.
- 43:39So I like both of those guys. I like the Mountain West
- 43:43pedigree for both of those guys. I have to say on Alan Haas, so
- 43:47Creighton guy head coach him waiting at Creighton.
- 43:49I love what he did at at High Point, but he went to Creighton.
- 43:53He's head coach and waiting for coach McDermott.
- 43:55And based on the information that I have, this is potentially
- 44:01head coaches, head coach Mcdermott's last year at
- 44:04Creighton. He could very well be the head
- 44:07coach at Creighton when we're talking about when we're talking
- 44:10about this two months from now. So I just, I don't see that
- 44:13happening. It's going to be really hard for
- 44:15us to lure away a guy from his alma mater.
- 44:19They've got great fan support. They've got great.
- 44:21They've got a lot of the same stuff that K State has in a lot
- 44:24of ways. And when you think about some of
- 44:26these Big E schools, they can put all of their revenue share
- 44:30towards, you know, men's and women's basketball and
- 44:33volleyball basically because they're not having to split it
- 44:35with football. So they've got a lot of dollars
- 44:38that are working at their disposal on this.
- 44:40I just don't see that happening. If I had a #3 I'm putting it on
- 44:44Hoiberg. I would absolutely murder to
- 44:48have Fred Hoiberg wearing purple.
- 44:52There's no chance, right? I don't think there's any chance
- 44:55I, I, I, I'm, I only threw that out because it's like he, he is
- 45:00a guy that if, if I had to look at coaches in the top half of
- 45:08their conferences that you look at their buyout numbers.
- 45:13I mean, he could easily take a call from K state and double his
- 45:17salary at Nebraska, right? Like I, I think, I think there's
- 45:21a high potential of that, but I think you make the call like I
- 45:28think you make the call on him. You make a call on a few other
- 45:30guy like. But if it's God, if it's if it's
- 45:36Chris Jans, I will riot. I will.
- 45:39I will. I'm with you, Matt.
- 45:41What's the beef with Chris Jans? Just because he's like a goober?
- 45:45Like he's ugly. Why, Why?
- 45:47Why would you go out? Why would you go out and hire a
- 45:50guy who lost by 20 earlier this season to Coach Tang?
- 45:54He is 12 and 14. Like, why would you go out and
- 46:00hire a coach with a losing record this season at the Power?
- 46:02Forward, he can get, he can get his teams to the NCAA
- 46:05tournament. That's the, that's the whole
- 46:08deal, like. If.
- 46:09You. If you're hire, if you're firing
- 46:12a coach for 'cause now, why would you go after a guy who has
- 46:15been fired for cause at a previous job for slapping ass on
- 46:18coeds at a bar on video? Like why would you do?
- 46:24That why would you party? I cannot stand Chris Jans.
- 46:29I cannot stand his fascination with Greg Marshall and the Greg
- 46:32Marshall Tree. It's just, it's ridiculous.
- 46:36It's ridiculous. We should not be doing this.
- 46:39If we go out and get Chris Jans, I will.
- 46:41Riot. OK, I'll riot as well.
- 46:43I'll riot as well. But I have my list.
- 46:45I I think. I mean, we need to start looking
- 46:48at Richmond. I'm telling you, with some
- 46:51feelers out there, Gene hired him at North Dakota State.
- 46:55I mean, he's won the summit three years, three times.
- 47:00You know. I'm not sleeping on Richmond.
- 47:03I like the first one to say this.
- 47:06He could be the feature head coach.
- 47:08I I like to think that I'm Nostradamus with this because
- 47:12when Frank Martin left, I predicted we were going to hire
- 47:20Bruce Weber. Bruce Weber's a dog.
- 47:24And so if I'm Nostradamus again, I should probably like pick like
- 47:32Dusty May, right? He's coming to Case, then we're
- 47:38getting Dan all Danny Hurley. OK.
- 47:43So I mean, but like on a serious note, what is retention at K
- 47:49State look like? Is there is there retention at
- 47:53all for any part of this basketball program?
- 47:59I don't know, I doubt it. David Castillo.
- 48:05I think you make him a priority. I think there's certain guys you
- 48:09make a priority. I think Castillo is definitely
- 48:12one. Are you going down the list?
- 48:14I I was going, I was going with players with eligibility.
- 48:17Obviously you can't bring a guy like CJ back, can't bring a guy
- 48:21like Nate back. Haggerty, you can't.
- 48:26Castillo you. Haggerty, you can't.
- 48:29He's he. Has one year, but he's one year,
- 48:32yeah. He could.
- 48:33Does he have a year? Left.
- 48:34He has a year left. Damn he has a year left.
- 48:39McGriff. Does he have time available?
- 48:43I Larry McGriff is a senior. Let's look at his stats here,
- 48:53123. I don't believe he does.
- 48:55He played eighteen games in 2020330134 and 21 so.
- 49:02Nate's a senior. I.
- 49:05Think Castillo, Andre Kostich. Yeah.
- 49:13Is he worth or or retain? I think.
- 49:17I think. Does he want to be back in
- 49:21America? Does he want to stay in America?
- 49:23Let's stay, let's say you say a name and they're like OK, I'd
- 49:29like to come back to KS State. Kostich is 1 for me.
- 49:32That if we are putting a huge indictment on the coaching staff
- 49:36this season for getting players. Malpractice.
- 49:43I don't see why you wouldn't bring him back or if I mean the
- 49:50way that PJ has played, you know, the next six games will be
- 49:54very interesting to see offensively what this team does
- 49:57because is it going to be, if it is it the PJ show?
- 50:01Well, Nate's cooking right now, but.
- 50:04You know, is it the PJ show where late in the second-half
- 50:09it's only him touching the ball? Like if you can tell that there
- 50:13is a difference offensively in this kind of short number of
- 50:17games, PJ could be a guy that I think in the right situation,
- 50:24like he has guys around him could be.
- 50:29I mean, if you don't have PJ this year, how, how worse would
- 50:34this team be? I guess the aggregate, I mean,
- 50:37just depends on who, who'd you get because I mean, we it was
- 50:42kind of late for PJ. He's kind of late.
- 50:46So in assembling the team, there wasn't a lot left out there.
- 50:50But yeah, this team could have been really, really bad.
- 50:53I mean, he gives you 20 to 25 points a game and.
- 50:57But it's not efficient though. So I mean, OK, Elias, repeat.
- 51:03He's gone, right? He doesn't have any eligibility.
- 51:07I mean, I think he had two years maybe is what they granted him.
- 51:11OK, well I mean he hasn't. When was the last time he played
- 51:15in a game at this? Point.
- 51:16Well, he's been hurt, hasn't he? Yeah, well, he is a junior.
- 51:19He has one more year. OK, so I Abdi Bashir.
- 51:27I would take Bashir back, but I don't believe he can be a
- 51:33starter in the big. 12 I'm with you.
- 51:36He needs to be your energy guy. And he's just so poor
- 51:41defensively that he cannot be. If he has expectations that he
- 51:48wants to be a starter, I do not think you can build a team again
- 51:52and have him be the starter. OK, so so right now we've got
- 51:58one for people you would like to return.
- 52:01I I counted as 3. 4. I would take, I would actually
- 52:05take Buka back. That's all I was going to see.
- 52:08He was going to be my next player.
- 52:10I think he's the last guy that has.
- 52:14Maybe Moby has some. I think Taj is a senior.
- 52:17He was. He was Tang's first class,
- 52:20wouldn't he? Moby is not I I wouldn't.
- 52:23Right, Taj has another year. OK, Taj is a serviceable player
- 52:31in terms of like what you need him to do.
- 52:33He's gotten a lot better this season.
- 52:35I. I think he has.
- 52:36To He's gotten minutes. He shouldn't be a starter.
- 52:39He's started tonight. Well, he's been starting a lot
- 52:42of these games 'cause he repeats, it's been hurt.
- 52:47I would definitely take Taj back.
- 52:49I think he's, I think he's, he's obviously gotten a lot of Flack
- 52:53in the past handful of seasons, 'cause he, like, he got a lot of
- 52:56praise. And you?
- 52:58Know at all this stuff, but if you think about it, I like he is
- 53:03one of the hardest players on the court.
- 53:05Like he's shown that I think he's a guy that would be very
- 53:09helpful as a senior to help kind of start building your new
- 53:12culture with. So I do think there's guys on
- 53:16this team that you can. I mean, we just said five of the
- 53:2113 and we said yes, bring them back and, and OK, so I think
- 53:26players are one thing. What about what about coach
- 53:30staff? Absolutely none of them.
- 53:33Zero. I wouldn't retain a single guy
- 53:38that's toxic. I mean with with how toxic this
- 53:40has been with. Tang Why would you?
- 53:42I wouldn't mind Driscoll. I wouldn't mind Driscoll.
- 53:46I don't think he's done anything because it's.
- 53:53I don't know. I just think for for basketball,
- 53:56it's so different than football. Like basketball, it's a it's a
- 53:59smaller staff and you know, a lot of coaches they want to they
- 54:05want to keep some type of like symmetry or chemistry from the
- 54:09last stop to this one because they've been so successful with
- 54:12this group. And then you bring in maybe, you
- 54:15know, one or two other guys. But I want to, I want to say
- 54:19it's pretty rare that a basketball, like a basketball
- 54:23coaching transition involves the new staff keeping even like 1
- 54:28coach like the strength and conditioning or something like
- 54:31that. You know, I feel like could be
- 54:33maybe like an outlier or, you know, some of like the support
- 54:36staff that do stick just with their time with the university,
- 54:40but I don't see anybody on the staff staying just based off of
- 54:47what has happened this year. I think a head coach that comes
- 54:50in, they're going to want to. You want a clean house, you want
- 54:54to just bring it. You want your people there.
- 55:01Yeah. And if if you do end up getting
- 55:04a guy like Josh Shirts, who would, as we're talking about
- 55:08this, just lost to Rhode Island by 5 points tonight.
- 55:11No way so. They got their second loss of
- 55:14the season in the Maybe the shine will be wearing off of.
- 55:17Shirts is he about to pull in Indiana State again and just,
- 55:21you know, have that long run and then seven straight losses?
- 55:27Who knows, but when you look at his staff, I, I think I forget
- 55:31one of the, one of the people in the KC media, Josh on the 12
- 55:36podcast I listened to today about it that mentioned he's got
- 55:40guys on his staff who have had opportunities to go to other
- 55:43places, but they've stuck around with him because they, they
- 55:46believe in him as the leader. You know, Matt's 100% like you
- 55:49want to bring in a guy. Who?
- 55:52Can bring in some cachet with him and bring in if you're, if
- 55:55you're hiring a sitting head coach, if what is working at
- 55:58another stop is working, I wouldn't want to mess too much
- 56:01with the with the mojo on that. And honestly, when you look back
- 56:06at Tang's assembly of his coaching staff, he got a bunch
- 56:09of guys from a bunch of different places and had never
- 56:12coached together before, with the exception of I think Doreen
- 56:16and and Tang and maybe Malagi at some, I don't know.
- 56:20But there wasn't a ton of cohesion there.
- 56:22There wasn't a ton of overlap. Rodney Perry was kind of this
- 56:26throwaway edition because he was in charge of the Link Academy in
- 56:29Missouri, which we got 0 recruits from.
- 56:32Was. Maybe we would get yeah.
- 56:34And who knows? I don't, I don't know, like it.
- 56:37I want to have a rock, like not just a roster that's cohesive,
- 56:40but I want to have a coaching staff that's cohesive, that
- 56:42knows each other well. It's coached it with one another
- 56:46at various different stops, or at least for the last year or
- 56:49two years. I feel like that goes a long
- 56:51way. I say all of this knowing that K
- 56:54State football has assembled a bunch of guys from a bunch of
- 56:58different places, but there is still some carry over.
- 57:00Jordan Peterson. But like Matt said, I mean, it's
- 57:03a different kind of. Thing yeah right so yeah it's
- 57:08it's different it's much smaller it's much more intimate setting
- 57:11intimate environment smaller roster smaller coaching staff so
- 57:15yeah I I don't really have anything else any any any final
- 57:19thoughts as we close out he gone episode.
- 57:24Yeah, he gone. It was it was needed.
- 57:27No, I think that is literally my that that is my sentiment.
- 57:31No matter how. Oh, you're up.
- 57:35No, I'm after you. I got my hand.
- 57:37OK, OK, yeah, no matter how you want to like shape the narrative
- 57:43about money, financial, all this cause whatever this needed to be
- 57:50done, the break needed to happen.
- 57:53We we've been saying, oh, that doesn't matter because he's
- 57:56going to be back next year because of this that or 1/3 this
- 58:00had to happen. And like Matt said multiple
- 58:03times throughout the the episode, we're first to the
- 58:07market. We're we've got our name out
- 58:09there first. Let the let the sweepstakes
- 58:12begin. Really that's I'm just, I'm
- 58:15excited for this because I think the news leaking out slowly but
- 58:20surely with games being played, that is kind of the that is
- 58:24ideal. I love it.
- 58:27K State baseball 4 now Oh. Yeah, got to talk 757 runs or
- 58:34something like. That yeah, K State baseball, the
- 58:38teams they played this past season or this past weekend,
- 58:42UConn was favorite is favorite to win the Big East in baseball.
- 58:47UConn is Yep, it's like UConn. Freighton every year top.
- 58:51Yeah, yeah. Penn State won 30 games last
- 58:54year. Iowa, I think they won 30 games
- 58:58a year last year, too. This weekend, though, big test.
- 59:02They play Auburn, Nebraska, Michigan.
- 59:06I think actually here in Dallas, this will be a really good kind
- 59:13of litmus test for this team. I think can they continue that
- 59:17momentum going into this tournament?
- 59:19If they can take 2 out of three, I think that would be absolutely
- 59:23huge. They take three out of three
- 59:25that I think this team is, is kind of a legitimate team that
- 59:28could could challenge for the Big 12 even.
- 59:32I think two or three would be huge.
- 59:35If they don't have a good weekend, then everything will be
- 59:39all for not. No, I'm kidding.
- 59:40So do I need to Start learning these players names?
- 59:42Do I need to learn like anything?
- 59:44Do I need to? Do I need to get invested now?
- 59:47Hey DD Kennedy, I've been a fan of D Kennedy.
- 59:50From the beginning. Since he came over.
- 59:52And then Shintoro in a way. In a way.
- 59:55Right. Good.
- 59:56That was that was pretty good. Fucking good, too.
- 59:58Yeah, yeah. Japanese guy.
- 1:00:00Yes, he's from Japan. We'll we'll give you a week to
- 1:00:07kind of get it together so then we can discuss baseball next
- 1:00:10week. And then I'm going to act like
- 1:00:12I've been watching these guys the entire time.
- 1:00:15Yeah, yeah, we know that's basically how you get through
- 1:00:18this basketball thing too, so. As I'm.
- 1:00:21Watching basketball right now, we're blowing a, you know, a 13
- 1:00:24point lead. Oh, I was like, it's, it's a six
- 1:00:27point lead. Was 13 I think.
- 1:00:31Let's go. But it's still AI.
- 1:00:34Guess I'm way behind because it's a 10 point game for me
- 1:00:36right now. They're going on a run, boy.
- 1:00:39Sweet Hell, yeah. Love to hear.
- 1:00:42Well, that's going to do it for us tonight for Cocaine Willie.
- 1:00:46Yeah, yeah. Great, great stuff.

- 1:02:11last night. Give it a watch.
- 1:02:12It was actually a fun one to rewatch.
- 1:02:14I have not watched that game in many, many years.
- 1:02:18I haven't watched that game since I was at the game, so I'm
- 1:02:21going to be giving that a rewatch on my own.
- 1:02:24Can't wait. Jimmer Fredette, Hey, the best
- 1:02:26part about that was the UNI game against KU that haven't ranked
- 1:02:31that game in the same session and getting the double dip and
- 1:02:35everybody in purple for K State and you and I, we're cheering
- 1:02:38for each other, which is fun. Yeah, that's going to do it.
- 1:02:41That's going to do it. We are all coke and no joke.
- 1:02:44Chef chef dot chef. Cocaine's a hell of a drug,
- 1:02:49baby. Now we are all coke and no joke
- 1:02:53except for Coach Tang. He's a joke.
- 1:02:57Let's rap. That was a bar.
