- 0:01When you make that strong intention to connect to a guide who really has
- 0:06healing powers for you and your lineage as a whole,
- 0:09who shows up will be exactly who you need to speak to.
- 0:24Hello and welcome back to Remember Why You're Here,
- 0:27a podcast for seekers and sensitives where you can relax, receive,
- 0:31reconnect to yourself and remember that most important thing of all,
- 0:35why you're here. I'm Asia Suler, author,
- 0:39earth intuitive teacher. And in this episode today,
- 0:44I wanted to revisit a recording I put out several
- 0:49falls ago now. It was actually before my daughter was born.
- 0:52She was just a little babe in my belly when I first recorded this.
- 0:57And I wanted to return to this recording called Who Are Your Deep Ancestors?
- 1:02Because right now in this moment, as this is being released,
- 1:06I am in Southern France visiting the paleolithic caves
- 1:11of the deep ancestors. I am in the Dordogne region of
- 1:16France in Les Eyzies, and I am here once again.
- 1:21So I was here last year for the first time fulfilling a dream
- 1:26of mine that I have been holding and nurturing
- 1:31within myself a dream that I talk about in this recording.
- 1:35its genesis, how it first came in,
- 1:38working on my next book or working on this book that really has
- 1:43been a part of my world now for almost seven years.
- 1:47That's nutty to me that the idea for this book first came in seven years ago.
- 1:51If you are curious more about what this book is,
- 1:54I talk more about my first journey to Southern France and the
- 1:59overall tenets of the book,
- 2:01what I'm actually doing with this book in episode 40 called What Am I Doing in
- 2:06Southern France?
- 2:07So you can go back and listen to that episode from last year. But this
- 2:12book, which will still be years in the making, it's just one of those books,
- 2:17but this book is about what I call the deep ancestors,
- 2:21these ancestors of our lineage and of the earth
- 2:26that are here to help us reconnect to what it means to be human,
- 2:30these deep ancestors who are profoundly connected to the earth,
- 2:34who knew how to live in relationship with the earth.
- 2:40And my experience with these deep ancestors are that they have so much to
- 2:45teach us and so much that they want to say.
- 2:47So for me in my connection with the deep ancestors,
- 2:51it has brought me to these caves in Southern France.
- 2:56So many of these caves date back upwards of
- 3:0030,000 years ago. So these are ancient,
- 3:05ancient places. Some of these decorated caves,
- 3:08painted caves have these images inside of them
- 3:14of animals, of faces,
- 3:16of hand prints that predated
- 3:20agriculture,
- 3:21that predated anything that we know of in terms of the
- 3:27written record. These engravings in these paintings are
- 3:31upwards of 17,000 to 36,000 years old.
- 3:35And so it has been just really the honor of my lifetime to be here and
- 3:40inside of these caves.
- 3:41I'm getting to visit some of the caves that I saw last year,
- 3:46but I'm also getting to visit a few caves that I was unable to see last year
- 3:50because they were closed for various reasons.
- 3:54So it has just been such a treat so far to
- 3:59be here,
- 3:59to wake up in this beautiful place with this ancient river moving
- 4:04through these limestone cliffs,
- 4:07to wake up and have my tea and look out over the green and
- 4:12the snaking river. To be inside this valley,
- 4:15that just feels like home in so many ways.
- 4:19It's everything a human could hope for in terms of the shelter and the
- 4:24fertility.
- 4:25And I see why humans have come here to make their home for so
- 4:30very long,
- 4:32including humans that existed before homo sapiens came onto this planet. This
- 4:36was also a place in which the Neanderthals lived.
- 4:40And so as I am just deeper in this exploration this
- 4:44week, coming back for this second trip,
- 4:47hopefully tipping more into the writing of this book,
- 4:51I thought it would be particularly potent to revisit this
- 4:56recording,
- 4:57this episode that I made really not so long after
- 5:02the first message came in for me to start working on this book. And so again,
- 5:07this was when my daughter was just a little seed in my belly.
- 5:10I recorded this in 2021. I think it came out in 2022.
- 5:16And yeah,
- 5:17it just feels like such an honor to return to this and just see this long thread
- 5:21throughout time.
- 5:22And it feels particularly potent now to visit because we've officially
- 5:27tipped into fall.
- 5:28We're officially in this season of the thinning of the veil of the ancestors.
- 5:32It's such a rich time to work with these deep ancestors,
- 5:36so let's go ahead and meet them. Let's meet your deep ancestors
- 5:40and explore the ways in which they may want to work with you.
- 5:46Lately,
- 5:46ancestor work has been coming back into our imagination in the Western world and
- 5:51the ancestors couldn't be more delighted. Right now we're in autumn,
- 5:56known as Samhain Season in the Celtic Wheel of the Year.
- 6:00This is the time of the year in many different cultures where it becomes easier
- 6:04to speak to the ancestors, to communicate across the veil,
- 6:08and in the Celtic understanding to access the other world.
- 6:12There's a lot of different kinds of ancestors to connect with.
- 6:16I wanted to talk about one specific variety of ancestor that is eager to
- 6:21speak with you. When it comes to ancestor work,
- 6:24many people are familiar with the concept of working with those in your lineage
- 6:28who you can name, who you can find on your family tree,
- 6:31or who are connected to you by name. Now,
- 6:35this is a beautiful way to go about ancestral work and important healing can
- 6:39happen with this. And it can sometimes feel fraught if you have a challenging
- 6:44relationship with your family or to your family's history, for example,
- 6:48your family's histories as settlers or colonizers. This can feel challenging,
- 6:53like there's a lot to wade through and perhaps trauma to heal.
- 6:57One way to connect with your ancestry in a way that might feel a bit gentler,
- 7:02but still just as profound is to connect to your deep ancestors.
- 7:08So who are the deep ancestors?
- 7:11This definition might change depending on where in the world you come from,
- 7:15but I consider the deep ancestors as those who lived before written
- 7:20history, those whose names likely have been lost with time,
- 7:24and those who come from a culture and a time where the
- 7:29environment that they lived in and the society that they lived in very much
- 7:33lived in harmony with the earth.
- 7:35So depending on where in the world your family hails from,
- 7:39this could be quite recent or it could be pretty far in the past. As someone of
- 7:44European descent, to me,
- 7:46my deep ancestors feel that they reside in the neolithic or the paleolithic.
- 7:52So both the neolithic and the paleolithic are considered to be pre-history
- 7:56because there's no written accounts of these times.
- 7:59We are mostly going off of artifacts and what we can deduce from
- 8:04archeology. If you've ever heard of the concept of deep time,
- 8:09this is looking at the scale of earth time and its grandiosity and
- 8:13its fullness. Well, we can apply the same concept to the ancestors.
- 8:17We have deep ancestry.
- 8:20We tend to focus on just the last few hundred years,
- 8:24especially because that's what's normally recorded in our family trees.
- 8:28But your tree,
- 8:29the tree of your DNA and your ancestry goes all the way back to the beginning.
- 8:34So if you wanted to,
- 8:36you could commune with deep ancestors a hundred thousand years ago,
- 8:40or if you'd like to commune with ancestors that are outside of the
- 8:45Homo sapiens species specifically,
- 8:47you could go back even further. I like to think as deep ancestors as those
- 8:52who live outside of the current systems that we live in.
- 8:57So these systems of capitalism, patriarchy,
- 9:01and the exploitation of the land.
- 9:03I want to commune with those who experienced a reality that
- 9:08is outside of what I was handed,
- 9:10a reality that is actually here to help us remember what
- 9:15it means to be human and how to move about the world.
- 9:19These deep ancestors have a perspective on life that we're really
- 9:23just remembering now and they have so much to share with us.
- 9:28These deep ancestors lived in a paradigm that for some of us might even be hard
- 9:33to imagine now, but when we connect in with them,
- 9:36they can begin to share these mindsets with us,
- 9:39these ways of interacting with ourselves and the world,
- 9:43and profound gifts can come out of this connection.
- 9:47These deep ancestors in your lineage have very
- 9:51specific,
- 9:53powerful gifts to share with you. I believe that there's a wisdom that lives
- 9:58in our deep ancestry and now wisdom is wanting to come to the surface again.
- 10:03Even 2000 years ago,
- 10:05Daoist philosophers in China were already talking about the fact that their
- 10:10ancestors knew something and were aligned with the Dao in a way
- 10:15that had already been lost. So even 2000 years ago,
- 10:19advanced cultures in the world were seeing that there was a way that their
- 10:24ancestors were operating in the world that was actually more in harmony with
- 10:29the earth and therefore more in harmony with their own Dao and the thread of
- 10:34their own soul.
- 10:36Through my explorations in connecting with the deep ancestors,
- 10:39I have seen time and time again that they deeply want to communicate with us.
- 10:44Not only are they invested in human beings flourishing and you
- 10:49flourishing as one of their lineage,
- 10:51but they're invested in human beings being able to be here on earth,
- 10:56being able to be in communion with this earth,
- 10:59to living in harmony. And so they want to be
- 11:03communicating with you and they want to help guide you, not only in your life,
- 11:08but in your ancestral work as a whole.
- 11:11They can be a sentinel on one end of the spectrum that can
- 11:16help you heal whatever trauma or hurt has happened in between.
- 11:21So I have a really interesting story of how I got into working with the deep
- 11:26ancestors.
- 11:27I was doing a series of pilgrimages to visit the countries and the
- 11:32lands that my family are from in Europe.
- 11:36And right before I went to England, I did a journey,
- 11:41so sometimes called shamanic journeys.
- 11:43I did a journey to connect with the ancestors there to say, "I'm coming.
- 11:47I'm excited to meet you." And what was so interesting is in the journey,
- 11:52as I was drumming,
- 11:54I actually found myself going into a cave and coming out into this limestone
- 11:59cliff in what looked like Southern France. Now, this was confusing to me.
- 12:04I had never been to Southern France before. At the time,
- 12:06I didn't even know that there were limestone caves there,
- 12:10but I just had this feeling like this reminds me of something I've seen.
- 12:14Maybe it was Southern France, but this definitely is not England.
- 12:19And as I moved through this landscape and in this journey,
- 12:22I met with people who said they were my ancestors who looked quite
- 12:27different than what I expected.
- 12:29They looked as if they were from paleolithic times,
- 12:32the clothing that they were wearing, how they were traveling in a small band.
- 12:37And it was one of the most powerful journey experiences I ever had.
- 12:41And I remember they looked directly into my eyes and they said,
- 12:45"We are the ancestors we want you to connect with.
- 12:47This is your work." Of course,
- 12:49I still went to England and had an incredible time connecting with my
- 12:53matrilineal line there,
- 12:55but that encounter with the deep ancestors never left me,
- 13:00and it ended up becoming this torch for me to continue to do this
- 13:05ancestry work in an even deeper way. Now,
- 13:09what's really fascinating about this is right before I went to England,
- 13:13I did a genetic test to find out my DNA history.
- 13:17And while I was there, I got the test results back.
- 13:21And what is so interesting is that part of these test results was actually to
- 13:25look at my haplo group.
- 13:26Your haplo group traces your mitochondrial matrilineal DNA,
- 13:31so following your matrilineal line as far back as that specific
- 13:36variation can go. And I found out that I was haplogroup H,
- 13:40which a large majority of people of European descent are.
- 13:45But what's so amazing about this, as I was reading,
- 13:49is that haplogroup H can be traced back to the limestone
- 13:54caves and landscape of Southern France in the paleolithic.
- 13:59My mind was so blown by this.
- 14:02It's one thing to have an experience in a journey or meditation and feel like
- 14:06this was meaningful to me. Doesn't matter whether or not it's true,
- 14:10it really gave me something profound.
- 14:12It's another experience entirely to have that profundity and hold onto it
- 14:17and know that it's an important guide for you,
- 14:19and then to have this fascinating,
- 14:22interesting piece of your history come in to affirm this,
- 14:26that actually I did have ancestors living there and what I was experiencing was
- 14:30not just a figment of my imagination,
- 14:32it was a true connection with my deep ancestors.
- 14:36The really cool thing about working with the deep ancestors is you don't need to
- 14:40know very many specifics at all about your heritage or your lineage.
- 14:46You can just ask to connect to an ancestor from the deep past who wants to work
- 14:51with you. And in fact,
- 14:52you might know countries that your family is from,
- 14:56but the deep ancestor who wants to work with you might have never been to that
- 15:00country. That might be further back than even your family established roots in a
- 15:05specific place. So be open to just who shows up and where you end up.
- 15:11So how do you start talking to your deep ancestors? Well, first of all,
- 15:15they want to talk to you. So once you open that door,
- 15:19you might end up finding that actually they're right there and they're going to
- 15:22start coming into your dreams, coming into synchronicities in your life,
- 15:26or just into ideas that seem to lead you forward.
- 15:29If you've never tried a shamanic journey,
- 15:31I think this is an incredible place to start.
- 15:34And I will put a link here to a video that I have all about how to
- 15:39undertake a journey so you have guidance about how to do this.
- 15:44Any kind of meditation practice will also help you tune in.
- 15:48I find simple instruments like a flute or a drum instruments that
- 15:53likely your ancestors did have access to because we know that these are very
- 15:58ancient instruments in humankind that can really help you tune
- 16:02in and sort of get into the flow. Or if you have particular music that to
- 16:07you helps you drop into the feeling sense of your deep ancestors,
- 16:12definitely play that music as well.
- 16:15Any kind of ancestral arts is also a direct way to communicate
- 16:20with your ancestors. So ancestral arts could be music or dancing,
- 16:23but it could also be crafts, for example, leather working,
- 16:28sewing, or molding clay.
- 16:31So all of these are ways to start talking to your deep ancestors.
- 16:36And I think as long as you go in with the intention to really connect to
- 16:42benevolent, wise, shining, intelligent,
- 16:46deep ancestors, those who have wisdom to share with you,
- 16:51then you don't need to worry about who necessarily shows up.
- 16:54When you make that strong intention to connect to a guide who really has
- 16:59healing powers for you and your lineage as a whole,
- 17:02who shows up will be exactly who you need to speak to. This is a
- 17:07really powerful time of the year for doing this kind of work.
- 17:11Because the veil between the worlds is thin,
- 17:14it's just much easier to hear these messages,
- 17:17to receive communications and dreams.
- 17:20So your willingness to harness this time of the year will
- 17:25bring so much depth and so much profundity to these
- 17:29explorations.
- 17:31And if you'd like any support on this journey of connecting to your
- 17:36ancestors and this concept of the other world,
- 17:40then definitely check out my course Herbs for the Otherworld. In the course,
- 17:44we talk about specific plants and practices that really help you
- 17:49to communicate across the veil,
- 17:51to harness this really special and powerful time of
- 17:56being able to work with the unseen realm and have the wisdom and guidance from
- 18:01the unseen realm stream into your life and uplift and support you
- 18:06as you move into your next step. So now I would love to hear from you.
- 18:12If you've started doing ancestor work or it's an established part of your
- 18:15practice, I would love to know who do you talk to?
- 18:19Have you had a deep ancestor in the way that I describe it show up for you
- 18:24in your journeys or in your connections? And if so,
- 18:28what have you received from this relationship?
- 18:31So wherever your explorations take you this autumn,
- 18:34may the path be guided by those who love you beyond all reason,
- 18:40by your deep ancestors,
- 18:41by those who are here to guide and support you every step of the way.
- 18:47So if you do end up working with your deep ancestors this fall,
- 18:52if they too are calling to you or talking to you, I would love to hear about it.
- 18:57It has been such an amazing place for rich conversation over on my Substack.
- 19:01Remember why you are here.
- 19:04It's been just really authentically fun to create that space,
- 19:08to connect with you all,
- 19:10to have it be a space where I can be sharing expanded
- 19:14episodes, greater writings, more information,
- 19:18just really more opportunity to connect.
- 19:20So if you're interested in deepening the conversation,
- 19:24I'd love to hear from you over there. And this week,
- 19:27I'm actually doing something that's taking a little bit of bravery for me,
- 19:30but this week for paid subscribers,
- 19:32I am releasing part of the first chapter of my
- 19:37book.
- 19:38So I wrote this introductory chapter last fall when I took a sabbatical
- 19:43to work on the book and it required a lot of collation of years and years of
- 19:48research and I have a very in-depth outline of the book and I wrote this intro
- 19:53as a way to really organize my thoughts and help me reenter the world again. And
- 19:57so I wanted to share
- 20:00a piece of this introduction for all those who are joining me as paid
- 20:04subscribers over there. If you're not a paid subscriber,
- 20:07you can still read a little bit of that introduction and read me talking about
- 20:12its creation. So if you're interested in that,
- 20:14I will put that link here for folks who want to check
- 20:19out the Substack and check out some of this first chapter of the book.
- 20:24It's always pretty tender to put something that you've really just been working
- 20:28on your own within out into the world. It's like your little cache,
- 20:33you're like a squirrel with this little cache that you've been saving and is so
- 20:37precious and to put it out in the world feels really big,
- 20:40but it also feels like an important step into really going
- 20:44deeper into writing this book and to taking the next step in its creation.
- 20:49So I would love to see you over there if you are feeling called and whatever the
- 20:54winds of autumn bring to you this season,
- 20:58may it bring with it these tidings from the deep ancestors,
- 21:02these rememberings of how deeply you belong on this planet,
- 21:07how you were made for this time,
- 21:09you have within you all of your ancestors' resilience, their knowhow,
- 21:14their magic, their connection to this planet,
- 21:17and may this shift into this new season help you
- 21:22remember that most important thing of all why you're here.
