- 0:00Speaker 1: You're the number one club on in America.
- 0:02Speaker 2: I think the thing that people in America don't realize
- 0:05Speaker 2: there's no money like the Black dollars. Dream used to
- 0:08Speaker 2: do eight thousand people all night. That's why Gilbert's party
- 0:12Speaker 2: was a million dollar party because we sold four hundred
- 0:14Speaker 2: thousand in bottle service tape.
- 0:16Speaker 1: Why did you even get into hospitality?
- 0:18Speaker 2: Did the Washington Hilton that's when they give the correspondence
- 0:21Speaker 2: then at a minimum ten thousand people, and they said,
- 0:25Speaker 2: you'll never.
- 0:25Speaker 1: Do a party here.
- 0:26Speaker 2: Gang. We couldn't get nobody out six seven in the morning.
- 0:29Speaker 2: How much would we bring average Friday night? There's one
- 0:31Speaker 2: point fifty a good Friday night, it's three fifty. But
- 0:34Speaker 2: I got artists. Screen was lit. But my problem with
- 0:37Speaker 2: Dream is that I was doing an artist every week.
- 0:41Speaker 1: I was dependent on the artists too. You said nobody
- 0:43Speaker 1: spends money like black people on night life. What about brunch?
- 0:46Speaker 2: The super Bowl party wasn't amazing, but the branch was
- 0:49Speaker 2: seven hundred and eighty people. This is the black dollars
- 0:53Speaker 2: and it's black accident. It's all the money, and I'm
- 0:56Speaker 2: up here and all my people down there.
- 0:58Speaker 1: It ain't right.
- 0:59Speaker 2: I'm bring and all my people along with me. When
- 1:01Speaker 2: I did the podcast with you all, I was telling
- 1:04Speaker 2: you probably the most impactful interview I've done in my career.
- 1:11Speaker 2: That's real, he wrote.
- 1:12Speaker 1: I heard a shot at Troy talk about the tax letters.
- 1:15Speaker 1: We talk about science.
- 1:17Speaker 3: When we talk in a language that is common to
- 1:19Speaker 3: the people that's from the communities that we grew up with.
- 1:21Speaker 1: You all are the bright spot, thank Rwerdship for Black Americans.
- 1:27Speaker 1: This is the knowledge that actually matters.
- 1:30Speaker 2: I plaud both of you for this, Saint.
- 1:33Speaker 1: Isn't it a country issue.
- 1:35Speaker 3: It's not an American issue, It's a world issue.
- 1:37Speaker 1: We tend to earn leisure, all right, gush, welcome back,
- 1:48Speaker 1: ey l. We are in DC and we at the
- 1:51Speaker 1: legendary Park on fourteenth. Yeah, and when we're a legend,
- 1:57Speaker 1: when we're a legend, actually is very red, actually being
- 2:00Speaker 1: establishment and talked to the owner of the establishment. And
- 2:02Speaker 1: that's actually what we're currently doing right now. Mark Barnes,
- 2:05Speaker 1: somebody who's a legend in the nightlife game. You know,
- 2:09Speaker 1: we have a mutual friend called Lou Talker.
- 2:11Speaker 2: So Tucker everybody knows. Everybody knows that Toli put it together.
- 2:15Speaker 1: But he also says something he said that you're the
- 2:18Speaker 1: number one club own in America.
- 2:23Speaker 4: So he was telling the truth is but you say
- 2:26Speaker 4: I've done the numbers, and I guess since you go
- 2:30Speaker 4: up against everybody else, there's taw group, which I applaud
- 2:35Speaker 4: them for what they've done.
- 2:37Speaker 2: But I think the thing that people in America don't
- 2:42Speaker 2: realize there's no money like the black doll, and this
- 2:49Speaker 2: is the black doll and it's black excellence.
- 2:54Speaker 1: That's the fair, except for people that don't know. We're
- 2:56Speaker 1: in the District of Columbia, DC. So part is a
- 3:00Speaker 1: fourth story with a patio in the back of establishment.
- 3:03Speaker 1: That's a restaurant, that's a club. You have brunch, it's like.
- 3:08Speaker 2: It's an event center.
- 3:09Speaker 1: It's an event center.
- 3:10Speaker 2: It's the whole week we got it's in the owner
- 3:12Speaker 2: of the Furst. Yeah. Two weeks after that, we got
- 3:15Speaker 2: what's the square at it?
- 3:16Speaker 1: For fifteen thousand square three fifteen thousand square foot establishment
- 3:20Speaker 1: and you and you own the real estates. I don't
- 3:23Speaker 1: you don't want to say, I don't, Okay, I don't.
- 3:26Speaker 1: I couldn't.
- 3:27Speaker 2: The guy wouldn't sell it, Okay, I wish I did. Yeah,
- 3:30Speaker 2: And that is an important piece of people looking to
- 3:34Speaker 2: do something. But I think the location that I do
- 3:39Speaker 2: have has helped the situation. You know, I don't know
- 3:44Speaker 2: that if Park wasn't on this is fourteenth Street is
- 3:48Speaker 2: basically three ninety five ninety five south right dumps right
- 3:54Speaker 2: into this, So you couldn't get a better I'm coming.
- 3:57Speaker 1: Straight up location essentially located.
- 4:00Speaker 2: Located, I'm two blocks in the White House.
- 4:02Speaker 1: And before this you had Club Love. I got to
- 4:05Speaker 1: give the whole, the whole history. So club Love legendary,
- 4:10Speaker 1: legendary club dream. Club Love turned into club Dream, Dream
- 4:14Speaker 1: turned in the turned into club Love. Yes, I only
- 4:17Speaker 1: court Love. I only thin I Court.
- 4:19Speaker 2: Dream, I mean, and I guess there's things that is
- 4:23Speaker 2: really known for Gilbert Arena's birthday. But Dream was it
- 4:34Speaker 2: when when we decided to change to love because we
- 4:37Speaker 2: had already been through a million of some people, and
- 4:42Speaker 2: you know, it was it was just a lot. It
- 4:45Speaker 2: was a lot, and we became love and everybody all
- 4:47Speaker 2: to be dreamed to me, It'll be dreaming me forever.
- 4:50Speaker 2: Two years into love. It Oh, it's love. It's all love.
- 4:53Speaker 2: It's all love.
- 4:56Speaker 3: You left out the part I mean obviously, being located
- 4:58Speaker 3: so close to the amount of politicians that come in.
- 5:01Speaker 2: Oh, I mean concresional back Hall because is obviously held here.
- 5:05Speaker 3: But like there's nobody who hadn't been the No, that's
- 5:08Speaker 3: what I'm saying.
- 5:08Speaker 2: Everybody close, everybody's been here, but.
- 5:11Speaker 1: I gotta paint the pictures of people that have not
- 5:13Speaker 1: been to DC. I got to really emphasize how much
- 5:17Speaker 1: the legacy from Park is legendary. But then the club
- 5:22Speaker 1: Dream Love Era.
- 5:23Speaker 2: Dream used to do eight thousand people a night.
- 5:25Speaker 1: I remember, I was dead, Like I said, I remember,
- 5:27Speaker 1: I used to go to school in Baltimore, so I
- 5:28Speaker 1: remember coming to Howard Holme, coming and coming to DC.
- 5:31Speaker 1: So you've been a fixture in the night life over
- 5:34Speaker 1: thirty years, Staple, Yes, right.
- 5:36Speaker 2: Thirty five years. Because before that I started by doing
- 5:39Speaker 2: other people's clubs and we weren't black people, weren't downtown,
- 5:47Speaker 2: allowed into the nice spots. So what they would do,
- 5:50Speaker 2: but I couldn't get a night, so I got Happy Hours.
- 5:54Speaker 2: I said give me five to ten. You're not doing nothing.
- 5:58Speaker 2: And I would go into the white spots and I
- 5:59Speaker 2: said give you five to ten. And then they realized
- 6:02Speaker 2: I was doing more money from five to ten than
- 6:04Speaker 2: they were doing from ten to three. But my problem
- 6:08Speaker 2: was the nightlife business. Back then, they they thought that
- 6:15Speaker 2: they were the gods. I gots the bartenders, the security
- 6:18Speaker 2: and everybody. And I went into these clubs and I
- 6:22Speaker 2: was like, why are you're bartenders treating people like shit?
- 6:26Speaker 2: Why you're security roughing people off? Why your bathroom's dirty?
- 6:30Speaker 2: And they said, we want to see you do that
- 6:33Speaker 2: when you get a place. Well I did it in
- 6:34Speaker 2: their place.
- 6:35Speaker 1: First.
- 6:35Speaker 2: I bought my own bathroom attendant. I bought my bathroom,
- 6:39Speaker 2: I mean, my bartenders. I went to with my grill.
- 6:46Speaker 2: But at that point it was called Houston's. Everybody knows
- 6:49Speaker 2: Houston's has an amazing training program. I got a shout
- 6:53Speaker 2: out to them because I tried to model after with Hillstone,
- 7:00Speaker 2: which is the parent company, or Houston's has done and
- 7:04Speaker 2: again it always makes it so interesting to me that
- 7:09Speaker 2: people can't model things that are already great. There's just
- 7:17Speaker 2: so many things, like I think the greatest thing going
- 7:21Speaker 2: is Unreasonable Hospitality. It's a book that anybody in the
- 7:26Speaker 2: hospitality business should read and what it says and what
- 7:30Speaker 2: it explains. You can mess up a steak, you can
- 7:33Speaker 2: mess up a meal, what you're going to leave with
- 7:38Speaker 2: is how did they fix it and how did they
- 7:41Speaker 2: make you feel? And that's what the most important thing
- 7:45Speaker 2: is when you are in the hospitality business and people
- 7:49Speaker 2: don't realize that, how do you make the customers feel
- 7:53Speaker 2: that supportant? That's import It's important how to go out
- 7:57Speaker 2: when you're in New York. Where do you go? You
- 7:58Speaker 2: ain't gonna take your wife or anybody to a place
- 8:02Speaker 2: that you gotta go go get in the back of line, right.
- 8:05Speaker 2: The treatment is important.
- 8:07Speaker 1: The treatment, Hey come here, come on? Are you called from?
- 8:11Speaker 2: Now?
- 8:11Speaker 1: On my way?
- 8:12Speaker 2: I'm good.
- 8:13Speaker 3: And that's what I told you as soon as we
- 8:14Speaker 3: were here for homecoming last year. The first thing I
- 8:17Speaker 3: said when I got home, I said, we gotta go
- 8:18Speaker 3: back to love. She's like what I said, No, no, no,
- 8:20Speaker 3: you got mean. I'm sorry, we gotta go. After saying
- 8:24Speaker 3: we gotta go see Park. You gotta go to Park,
- 8:25Speaker 3: and she's like, wow. Number one, the maca chee is incredible.
- 8:29Speaker 3: You know, just on't need anybody's maca cheek. But I'm like,
- 8:30Speaker 3: the maca cheese is incredible. But the ambiance feeling black excellence,
- 8:34Speaker 3: seeing it, watching people how they conduct themselves into space,
- 8:38Speaker 3: and it's four floors. In every floor is a hundred
- 8:42Speaker 3: people packed, and outside when you leave, there's another hundred
- 8:47Speaker 3: people trying to get in.
- 8:48Speaker 1: And I'm like, I was like a five hundred.
- 8:50Speaker 3: It's like that's happening on a routine basis. So the
- 8:53Speaker 3: treatment is important, the ambiance is important, But.
- 8:56Speaker 2: How did you even get into hospitality? So when when
- 9:00Speaker 2: I was nineteen, I had my own and well, my
- 9:03Speaker 2: father was in the restaurant business, his whole thing, and
- 9:11Speaker 2: my mom. My mom and him didn't work together, but
- 9:14Speaker 2: my mom worked for other companies. She worked for the
- 9:17Speaker 2: United Mine Workers. But my mom was amazing at getting
- 9:21Speaker 2: things done. My father, though instilled in us, I don't
- 9:27Speaker 2: care what you do, be the best at it. And
- 9:31Speaker 2: my mom was just great at everything she did. She
- 9:35Speaker 2: was a real worker. My father knew what it should
- 9:39Speaker 2: be like. Unfortunately he didn't make it as well as
- 9:44Speaker 2: I did in the hospitality business. And I think there
- 9:48Speaker 2: were different challenges at his time and even the challenges
- 9:54Speaker 2: that I run up against in this day and time.
- 9:56Speaker 2: I'm number one by twofold of liquor selles and by
- 10:00Speaker 2: in DC. But there's a difference and who wants you
- 10:06Speaker 2: to win and who don't and it's sad, but we
- 10:16Speaker 2: got charped. Y'all know where we're at. You know what's
- 10:18Speaker 2: happening in this world and people it is. I so,
- 10:22Speaker 2: my mom's white, my father's black, and I used to
- 10:24Speaker 2: be one of those naysay black people need to just
- 10:28Speaker 2: need to get the act together, blah blah blah, this,
- 10:30Speaker 2: that and the other. And I realized after being in business.
- 10:35Speaker 2: I learned it the first year, first two years, I
- 10:38Speaker 2: don't care how well you do. It's not a level
- 10:41Speaker 2: playing till you know. It ain't gonna be easy no
- 10:46Speaker 2: matter what.
- 10:46Speaker 1: Used to deliver flowers.
- 10:48Speaker 2: I used to be a lot of Republic Gardens, So yes,
- 10:51Speaker 2: Republic Gardens was my first place. So I was doing everybody.
- 10:54Speaker 2: And so how I got into the business. Me and
- 10:58Speaker 2: a guy named Jeff Burrows, where he was a good
- 11:01Speaker 2: friend of mine, Young Jeff little right, music guy, everything,
- 11:07Speaker 2: the guy. We were in New York City and he
- 11:09Speaker 2: was telling me who Andre Herrel and Russell Simmons were
- 11:12Speaker 2: across the room. He was like, that's why I want
- 11:14Speaker 2: to work with blah blah blahlah. You know he's going
- 11:17Speaker 2: off with you might as well be giving me a
- 11:19Speaker 2: calculus equation because it didn't make no difference. I didn't drink,
- 11:25Speaker 2: I ain't never tried to drug in my life, don't
- 11:27Speaker 2: know ten words of any song, and I ain't got
- 11:29Speaker 2: an aunceer rhythm. I got it all from my mom's
- 11:32Speaker 2: side on that. You know what I'm saying, I just
- 11:35Speaker 2: it ain't me. I was the kid that my sisters
- 11:38Speaker 2: made fun of me. You know, when we were coming out,
- 11:40Speaker 2: I was the show. They just said that they could
- 11:43Speaker 2: get a laugh. But anyway we get in. And I
- 11:47Speaker 2: had thrown this one party one time at what is
- 11:53Speaker 2: now the Waldorfer Story. Before that was Trump Hotel. Before
- 11:58Speaker 2: that it was post office what was it called. It
- 12:05Speaker 2: was the post office here in DC, but they used
- 12:08Speaker 2: to rent it out and everything. And I threw this
- 12:09Speaker 2: party one Christmas Christmas party and they had like two
- 12:13Speaker 2: thousand people. Damn okay. And so this girl that introduced
- 12:18Speaker 2: us to Andre and Russell, when she got to me,
- 12:20Speaker 2: she was like, Jeff Burrow, if he wants to get
- 12:22Speaker 2: into the music business, and this and the other, and
- 12:24Speaker 2: then she was like and they were like, well what
- 12:26Speaker 2: do you do? And she interjected because she didn't want
- 12:29Speaker 2: me to tell him that I own a messenger company.
- 12:32Speaker 2: She said, Oh, he throws parties. Okay, I'm going with it,
- 12:37Speaker 2: you know what I'm saying. So they were like, what
- 12:39Speaker 2: kind of parties? And Russell was like, what do you mean?
- 12:43Speaker 2: What kind of parties? I said, the dopest parties in
- 12:46Speaker 2: the world. And he was like, Nigga, you might see
- 12:50Speaker 2: Barbara Streis saying, sitting on the pool at my at
- 12:53Speaker 2: edge of the pool at my party. You know that
- 12:55Speaker 2: he's going on. He's like, I said, Nigga, I shit
- 12:57Speaker 2: on any party. He's like, he said, shit me. Next
- 13:00Speaker 2: week we come in there for the hip hop conference
- 13:02Speaker 2: at Howard. He said, you can write your own check
- 13:05Speaker 2: in the music business. Do whatever the fuck you want.
- 13:08Speaker 2: You throw up better party than me. I said done.
- 13:12Speaker 1: And I was supposed to be going to.
- 13:13Speaker 2: LA with my wife and family the next week and
- 13:18Speaker 2: we end up. I called my wife. We were y'all
- 13:21Speaker 2: heard of Nails. Is that before y'all tied and New
- 13:23Speaker 2: York Neils was the flat spot or the spot period
- 13:30Speaker 2: in New York back then. And so we were at
- 13:33Speaker 2: Nails and I'm on the phone, and you know, we
- 13:35Speaker 2: had gotten into conversations who had the biggest balls, you know,
- 13:38Speaker 2: the whole thing mee Andre and Russell. And Andre comes by
- 13:41Speaker 2: and he was like, who are you talking to? Because
- 13:43Speaker 2: I'm on a pay phone.
- 13:44Speaker 1: Man.
- 13:45Speaker 2: We ain't got no phones back then, we ain't got thoses.
- 13:47Speaker 2: And I said, all I'm talking to my wife. I'm
- 13:50Speaker 2: telling him were throwing a party. So he snatched his phone.
- 13:53Speaker 2: He was like, let me tell you something. If this
- 13:55Speaker 2: nigga don't have the best party I ever seen in
- 13:57Speaker 2: my life, it's gonna be a problem. So she get
- 14:01Speaker 2: back on the phone. She said, nigga, you wanna throw
- 14:02Speaker 2: parton you. She's like, forgive me. Were throwing the party?
- 14:07Speaker 2: I said? She said where? I said, at the house,
- 14:10Speaker 2: at your house, at my house. And I lived in
- 14:13Speaker 2: Southeast Washington, Okay, Hillcrest. So we called the caterer that
- 14:23Speaker 2: did our wedding, and we called the a tech company,
- 14:27Speaker 2: and I tinted my whole backyard. Re mind you, there's
- 14:32Speaker 2: no Instagram, no blah blah blah. And to a point
- 14:38Speaker 2: that was good. But to a point it wasn't good
- 14:42Speaker 2: because it was up to me to let the world
- 14:45Speaker 2: know who Andre Herral and Russell Simmons. Right now. You know,
- 14:48Speaker 2: Andre was really winning them because he had I'll be shure,
- 14:52Speaker 2: heavy d Mary J. Blige, father mc joe, to ce
- 14:58Speaker 2: like he was, but that I'll be sure back then
- 15:01Speaker 2: was that was it? So I just had and the
- 15:06Speaker 2: thing that I had going back then, receptionists were the
- 15:12Speaker 2: baddest of the bad at these big corporations. You know,
- 15:16Speaker 2: you had the beautiful women at the front. That's and there.
- 15:19Speaker 2: I had four hundred accounts. So everybody at every company,
- 15:25Speaker 2: if you had a council, work for my messenger company.
- 15:29Speaker 2: So everybody at every law firm, at everything, architecture company, everybody,
- 15:36Speaker 2: and all the batter ticks in DC we knew because
- 15:39Speaker 2: they were receptionists also works then to So I got
- 15:44Speaker 2: my one of the graphics companies that I delivered stuff
- 15:50Speaker 2: on me to do me a little flyer and everything,
- 15:53Speaker 2: and I went around to them. But back then it
- 15:57Speaker 2: was fax machines. So I would call one person and
- 16:02Speaker 2: they would say, I was like taxing your names. We
- 16:04Speaker 2: got these millionnaire guys coming in and they're gonna do
- 16:07Speaker 2: a party at my house. The height was there thirteen
- 16:12Speaker 2: hundred people on the guest list for my house. It's nose.
- 16:16Speaker 2: It wasn't that, it wasn't. But the backyard was on
- 16:19Speaker 2: tremong us, The tent was done. It was free food,
- 16:23Speaker 2: it was liquor. But this guy just told me I
- 16:25Speaker 2: could write a million dollar check, you know what I'm saying.
- 16:27Speaker 2: And I was like, okay, this is it. Still to
- 16:33Speaker 2: this day, I don't think there's been a party. Even
- 16:36Speaker 2: Gilbert was the closest thing to come to that. That
- 16:40Speaker 2: that party at my house. It didn't matter. You might
- 16:44Speaker 2: as well been at the granny because that's how dope
- 16:47Speaker 2: it was.
- 16:47Speaker 1: Why was it? It wove the volve just the girls
- 16:49Speaker 1: wolves up to.
- 16:50Speaker 2: Everybody, every flyer motherfucker. And then Andre and them showed up.
- 16:55Speaker 1: So they was impressed.
- 16:56Speaker 2: They was impressed. Doctors, Rose Royce's everything. You know. We
- 17:01Speaker 2: parked all the cars and shit, you couldn't get eight
- 17:03Speaker 2: blocks down.
- 17:04Speaker 1: The police came.
- 17:05Speaker 2: They were like, man, I can't shut this party that
- 17:08Speaker 2: I ain't never seen nothing like this, you know. And
- 17:11Speaker 2: of course, me being the kind of cornball I am,
- 17:14Speaker 2: somebody started smoking weed, probably Russell. I canceled the party.
- 17:18Speaker 1: You know, I was the anti You cut the end
- 17:21Speaker 1: of the party.
- 17:21Speaker 2: I ended. It's about two o'clock, okay, and I'm like,
- 17:25Speaker 2: somebody smoking weed, Oh my god, this is you know
- 17:28Speaker 2: because I'm the anti guy. Uh, and so I stopped
- 17:33Speaker 2: the party. But everybody believe it's time for it to
- 17:35Speaker 2: be over. Anyway, it's people all out front of the street.
- 17:40Speaker 2: Police keep coming, but they keep We just take them
- 17:42Speaker 2: into the party and they're like, ah, damn, can you
- 17:45Speaker 2: just turn it just a little bit, change it for
- 17:47Speaker 2: a little bit. But it was phenomenal. After that, I
- 17:51Speaker 2: was like, I don't need these guys to do a party.
- 17:56Speaker 2: I did a party, but remember that party cost me
- 17:58Speaker 2: twenty five thousand. That was just I'm gonna lay this money.
- 18:01Speaker 2: That was seed money. Next party I did at a
- 18:07Speaker 2: place on twenty first Street. I can't even remember the
- 18:12Speaker 2: I can't remember, but it was this marble place, held
- 18:15Speaker 2: about three thousand people. It was great, but I was
- 18:18Speaker 2: going up against these guys that only needed like two
- 18:21Speaker 2: hundred and fifty and they were the guys. It was
- 18:25Speaker 2: a monsoon that night. Well, anyway, the night when Russell
- 18:28Speaker 2: and Andrea are leaving the first party, Russell said to Andre,
- 18:34Speaker 2: he said, go ahead and get on your knees. Suck
- 18:37Speaker 2: that nigga's dick, he said, cause you ain't never gave
- 18:40Speaker 2: no party like this. He said, we ain't never been
- 18:43Speaker 2: to nothing, and basically they were on. They were on,
- 18:50Speaker 2: you know, they were on board and everything and it
- 18:53Speaker 2: was it was it. So then Andre was like, you
- 18:56Speaker 2: need to and that's when Puff was just coming into
- 19:00Speaker 2: play with Andre and he was like, I need you
- 19:03Speaker 2: to do something with my man. Y'all need to do
- 19:05Speaker 2: something together. So anyway, I did a party for Howard
- 19:09Speaker 2: graduation with Puff, not none that wasn't with Puff. Puff
- 19:13Speaker 2: didn't come into Howard homecoming me and him. And that's
- 19:17Speaker 2: when Lou and Lou. Lou was getting me because I
- 19:21Speaker 2: was actually working with Andre, helping him get records played
- 19:25Speaker 2: here and Lou was like my boss. And Lou was
- 19:29Speaker 2: always tending me out here. He was like, you can
- 19:34Speaker 2: do the party, but I got to get these records played.
- 19:36Speaker 2: If I got to do your job, you got to
- 19:37Speaker 2: pay me. But he did the job. He did what
- 19:40Speaker 2: I needed to do.
- 19:43Speaker 1: And we did. It worked.
- 19:44Speaker 2: But then I did the party that had the monsoon.
- 19:47Speaker 2: I had thirty three hundred. I was lucky it was
- 19:49Speaker 2: a monsoon because I wouldn't. It would have been twice
- 19:52Speaker 2: as big as it was. Then we did the Washington Hilton.
- 19:57Speaker 2: That's when they where they give the correspondence then, and
- 20:03Speaker 2: that was at a minimum ten thousand people, and they said,
- 20:09Speaker 2: you'll never do a party here. Gang. We couldn't get
- 20:11Speaker 2: nobody out six seven in the morning, people still doing it.
- 20:14Speaker 2: It's how a graduation. Nobody wants to go anywhere. It's
- 20:17Speaker 2: the last day. You got ten thousand people. I didn't
- 20:20Speaker 2: shut everything down so then, but I wasn't stealing. That's
- 20:27Speaker 2: what people don't realize. You're not making money when you're
- 20:30Speaker 2: doing this because you don't understand how the hotel's gonna
- 20:33Speaker 2: beq and how their costs are going to come in.
- 20:35Speaker 2: They just you know, costs coming in every which way.
- 20:38Speaker 2: And I wasn't making money. I was doing the numbers.
- 20:41Speaker 2: I was investing in myself, but it wasn't money yet.
- 20:44Speaker 2: I mean, I'm sure with your first festival, it was like,
- 20:47Speaker 2: damn this cost us here. We got this in you
- 20:52Speaker 2: constantly everyone gets better. Yeah, it's a learning experience. It's
- 20:55Speaker 2: a learning experience. And there were a lot of learning experiences,
- 21:01Speaker 2: and the costs were just going up. And the one
- 21:06Speaker 2: thing I learned is that I never want my place
- 21:10Speaker 2: based on my event, based on an artist, because then
- 21:15Speaker 2: they got you by the ball and That's what we
- 21:16Speaker 2: did with Dream. But the price just kept going up,
- 21:20Speaker 2: and every week we had to do a new artist
- 21:22Speaker 2: because people would be like, I'm going wait. They wanted
- 21:25Speaker 2: to wait until there was going to be an artist there.
- 21:28Speaker 3: The price to rent this write out, no, the price
- 21:31Speaker 3: to book to book the art gotcha.
- 21:33Speaker 2: They just they were like, you need me now. When
- 21:38Speaker 2: I built well, then I went into having I was like,
- 21:43Speaker 2: I need to get weekly parties. So I went in
- 21:46Speaker 2: the weekly and went into people's places. I was just
- 21:49Speaker 2: disturbed about the way they would run their places. You
- 21:53Speaker 2: couldn't go to them, you couldn't bring real corporate people
- 21:57Speaker 2: to them. You know, the places were dirty and this
- 21:59Speaker 2: that other. And I said, when I got my own,
- 22:05Speaker 2: when I got Republic Gardens, I did it perfect. I
- 22:08Speaker 2: did it right.
- 22:09Speaker 3: Is that the point when you just figure out how
- 22:11Speaker 3: to monetize this thing?
- 22:13Speaker 1: And like, what what were the things?
- 22:14Speaker 2: It was?
- 22:14Speaker 1: Really?
- 22:15Speaker 2: I was making money when I was doing the weekly thing. Yeah, but.
- 22:24Speaker 1: We weren't in control because it's somebody else's establishment.
- 22:29Speaker 2: It's one in someone else's establishment. But now it takes
- 22:35Speaker 2: so much work. Back then, you know, flying flying fright,
- 22:38Speaker 2: Like there wasn't no TikTok. You know boot, you know
- 22:43Speaker 2: you want your restaurant to be. You get one person
- 22:46Speaker 2: come in in. Now you can't even handle the business.
- 22:48Speaker 2: It is the right person says this is the place
- 22:51Speaker 2: to be. Yeah, And I try to explain to people.
- 22:58Speaker 2: So I've always had this way I run things. If
- 23:04Speaker 2: I said to you, I want you to give me
- 23:05Speaker 2: a penny every day for thirty days, but every day
- 23:09Speaker 2: I want you to double that pain one cent, two cent,
- 23:13Speaker 2: four cent, eight cents, sixteen cent, thirty two percent doubles
- 23:17Speaker 2: every day for thirty days. And I said, if you
- 23:19Speaker 2: could bring me that penny every day for thirty days
- 23:22Speaker 2: double on time. At the end of thirty days, I'll
- 23:26Speaker 2: give you a million dollars. Would you do that? Mm hmm,
- 23:28Speaker 2: Now you want no, I don't. Well, yeah, it's gonna
- 23:32Speaker 2: cost me. It's gonna be tough to do after.
- 23:34Speaker 1: You can't do it, yeah, because you would have given me.
- 23:37Speaker 2: I did the meth on ten million, seven hundred and
- 23:39Speaker 2: thirty thousand, thousand dollars. So the key is to any business.
- 23:44Speaker 2: For any business, if you can get one person to
- 23:49Speaker 2: leave your place and tell two people that is amazing,
- 23:54Speaker 2: then you want you don't need nobody else. You don't
- 23:58Speaker 2: need no artists or you have won and you want
- 24:03Speaker 2: people to come because the place is right, not because
- 24:08Speaker 2: there's going to be someone else there, because the other
- 24:10Speaker 2: person is then in control with you. And that was
- 24:14Speaker 2: That's where a lot of these places have their challenges.
- 24:17Speaker 2: Instead of investing, and that's forty thousand dollars more in
- 24:22Speaker 2: one night in your staff, make them, let them make
- 24:26Speaker 2: the money, let them make people want to come back.
- 24:29Speaker 2: It's anything. If I were a real estate if you
- 24:35Speaker 2: bring me two people, I'm gonna pay your house note.
- 24:39Speaker 2: They're gonna buy houses. It's the same concept. But I'm
- 24:43Speaker 2: gonna have my plumber together, my contractor together, my electrician together,
- 24:49Speaker 2: my RUFA together, my landscape person. So that you're going
- 24:52Speaker 2: to all use these people that are going to do perfect.
- 24:56Speaker 2: And the first thing you're gonna say is, oh, just
- 24:59Speaker 2: call Mark whatever it is you need for your house.
- 25:02Speaker 2: You want to buy a house. He gonna find the
- 25:03Speaker 2: lone person. He's gonna find everything for you. Who's going
- 25:07Speaker 2: to get you perfect. He gonna find them out. Fucker
- 25:10Speaker 2: that's gonna straighten your credit out. But so it's a
- 25:13Speaker 2: one stop shot. So who you're gonna call off the
- 25:15Speaker 2: real estate there shoot me. And all I need of
- 25:18Speaker 2: you to do is tell two people, and then those
- 25:20Speaker 2: two people tell four, then they tell eight, then they
- 25:23Speaker 2: tell sixteen, and you're thirty two. It's you're winning. You
- 25:27Speaker 2: can't handle your you can't handle it after thirty two weeks.
- 25:33Speaker 2: It's crazy money. But people they shortcut the bathroom's attorney.
- 25:41Speaker 2: They gonna save money on the cleaners. I shampooed my
- 25:44Speaker 2: carpet every night. You'll smell nothing in there, and people
- 25:48Speaker 2: gonna come to brunch if the stinks is uh, I
- 25:52Speaker 2: don't know what they're doing down in the kitchen. You know,
- 25:54Speaker 2: everybody says, oh my god, you can't have a restaurant
- 25:56Speaker 2: in DC without rats.
- 25:58Speaker 1: You can.
- 25:58Speaker 2: You just gotta put ring camera behind your couches. You
- 26:01Speaker 2: got to know what's in your building. You got to
- 26:03Speaker 2: go after them. You can't have to ask for anything,
- 26:08Speaker 2: because if you do, before they tell two people that
- 26:12Speaker 2: you're good, they'll tell ten people that you're bad. So
- 26:18Speaker 2: five times quicker than you can go out, you will
- 26:20Speaker 2: come down. And that's what the challenge is with most people.
- 26:24Speaker 2: I'm doing.
- 26:25Speaker 1: That's the fact that's a good game, because that's like
- 26:27Speaker 1: the low multiplication referrals. Yeah, that's when I was a
- 26:30Speaker 1: financial advisor. I was always trying to get referral. That's
- 26:32Speaker 1: how I was taught.
- 26:33Speaker 2: That's it.
- 26:33Speaker 1: That's the easiest way to go.
- 26:34Speaker 2: Seek and all you got to do is be good
- 26:36Speaker 2: at your game. Pick up that phone. I hit people
- 26:38Speaker 2: all the time to say, oh, they don't pay me
- 26:40Speaker 2: enough to work on weekends or pick up my phone
- 26:42Speaker 2: when I'm on.
- 26:45Speaker 1: That's not for them.
- 26:47Speaker 2: That's for you. Anything you do when I ask somebody
- 26:51Speaker 2: to dress well or do something, that's for you. I
- 26:54Speaker 2: had a guy to come in here. I wuldn't even
- 26:55Speaker 2: take his interview. White got corny. Look at motherfuckers, I was,
- 27:01Speaker 2: I did not take it. I sent another manager, and
- 27:04Speaker 2: the other manager is he's a good guy, but he
- 27:08Speaker 2: just kind of like he don't really care. He goes
- 27:12Speaker 2: out talks to the guy. I said, just give it. Though.
- 27:16Speaker 2: He comes like down. I said, nigga, didn't I tell you, fucker.
- 27:19Speaker 2: Twenty minutes later he comes there. He said, I think
- 27:24Speaker 2: you want to talk to him that. I don't really
- 27:27Speaker 2: believe his judgment anyway, but I said, he was like no,
- 27:31Speaker 2: He said, you can take fifty dollars out of my
- 27:33Speaker 2: check if you don't think he's good to talk to outter.
- 27:35Speaker 2: So I said, okay, I'll go up there. Based on that,
- 27:37Speaker 2: I go up down and talk to him. I'm still
- 27:40Speaker 2: not come this, but I told the guy, I said,
- 27:45Speaker 2: I'll try you at twenty dollars an hour. When I
- 27:50Speaker 2: tell you, this corny looking white boy was the baddest
- 27:58Speaker 2: everything ever with all the black people. When he left here,
- 28:06Speaker 2: the Attorney General had asked him to work for in
- 28:09Speaker 2: every fuckingbody else. He left here to go to Austin, Texas.
- 28:17Speaker 2: Guess what. His wife was twice as good as him,
- 28:21Speaker 2: and they wanted to take her from the Fairmount Hotel
- 28:24Speaker 2: here downe to Austin, Texas so that she could run that.
- 28:28Speaker 2: But he was the baddest thing that ever came through
- 28:30Speaker 2: these stores his name, and there wasn't one employee. He
- 28:35Speaker 2: never had a problem. He did have one customer that
- 28:37Speaker 2: he couldn't get. She was just a bad apple, but
- 28:41Speaker 2: just one. In the whole time. I could go go
- 28:44Speaker 2: handle that tape, go handle that tape, and he was
- 28:49Speaker 2: just amazing. I try to explain to people in any business,
- 28:56Speaker 2: they're the people that do great And then there's the
- 29:00Speaker 2: people that don't care. Now there's three areas, don't care,
- 29:07Speaker 2: good and great. Good is the enemy of great because
- 29:11Speaker 2: you know they got the potential to be great. And
- 29:14Speaker 2: you're like, come on, man, I got a girl. I
- 29:18Speaker 2: want to pay a whole one hundred and sixty thousand
- 29:21Speaker 2: to run the whole stand. But she don't want me
- 29:24Speaker 2: to call her after seven on Sunday and before five
- 29:29Speaker 2: on Thursday. She wants four days off when instead of
- 29:34Speaker 2: the one hundred and sixty, she could probably be making
- 29:36Speaker 2: two fifty. But she's good with the hundred. And that's
- 29:44Speaker 2: why good is the enemy of great, because she's like,
- 29:49Speaker 2: I don't want to be great. I don't want to
- 29:50Speaker 2: work that hard.
- 29:53Speaker 1: It's good enough not to get scolded, but it's not
- 29:57Speaker 1: really what it needs to be.
- 29:59Speaker 2: It's up. I'm so tired of people telling me I
- 30:04Speaker 2: want to own my own If I work for myself,
- 30:07Speaker 2: you are working for yourself. That guy that, that white guy,
- 30:13Speaker 2: he could go anywhere and get into he left here
- 30:15Speaker 2: and when he went in to construction, when he got
- 30:17Speaker 2: down in Austin, and I still rave about him every day.
- 30:23Speaker 2: The most amazing thing to walk through these doors. You're
- 30:30Speaker 2: gonna have to cut this. This digger don't walk.
- 30:39Speaker 3: I want to know, turn around real quick, because this
- 30:42Speaker 3: guy walks in with a glass of wine.
- 30:46Speaker 1: He just walks in with a castle walk. I said, that's.
- 30:50Speaker 2: That's oh my god. Theseiggas must we'll go find the
- 31:07Speaker 2: way that always always good. They're going good. Anything going, yeah, man?
- 31:13Speaker 2: So then but anyway, keep going, make it great.
- 31:18Speaker 5: Mention my name. We didn't say your name twenty times.
- 31:25Speaker 5: Uh hey, cat said, can you tell them to get
- 31:31Speaker 5: from mortars?
- 31:32Speaker 2: Please? Thank you?
- 31:35Speaker 1: But it's the life is real simple.
- 31:43Speaker 2: Do you want to own your own? Do you know
- 31:46Speaker 2: what I do?
- 31:47Speaker 1: But do you know I work eight days a week.
- 31:51Speaker 3: Talk about that because people think they want that life,
- 31:55Speaker 3: because you may think.
- 31:57Speaker 2: They want to be they can't look good. No, no,
- 32:01Speaker 2: they they don't understand what it took. But when I
- 32:08Speaker 2: borrowed that money, when I had to borrow that money
- 32:11Speaker 2: at thirty two percent to build dream, Okay, so I
- 32:14Speaker 2: went in.
- 32:14Speaker 1: To talk about that, talk about okay, so.
- 32:17Speaker 2: I have a republic guard. I got Republic guards. These
- 32:19Speaker 2: white boys had a place they couldn't make it work
- 32:22Speaker 2: up on U Street that was the neck of the
- 32:25Speaker 2: black neighborhood.
- 32:26Speaker 1: U Street needed to be bought back.
- 32:28Speaker 2: Ben's Chili Bowl was right down the street.
- 32:30Speaker 1: You know.
- 32:30Speaker 2: It was trying to do that turn into white, to
- 32:35Speaker 2: the gentrification you know thing up there and everything. And
- 32:41Speaker 2: so I went up there and they couldn't make any well.
- 32:45Speaker 2: The first night they see the black people come in
- 32:47Speaker 2: their place and it was a good crowd and everything.
- 32:50Speaker 2: They were like, Mark, this ain't what we can do,
- 32:52Speaker 2: but we're gonna sell you our least. We're gonna give
- 32:56Speaker 2: you the place and everything. The problem was they had
- 33:00Speaker 2: on that dive bar like. That's dream No, that's Republic Arden.
- 33:05Speaker 2: It was dive bar like. And I was like, and
- 33:08Speaker 2: they had a slumlord and he wasn't doing nothing to
- 33:12Speaker 2: the place. And when I went in there, you know,
- 33:14Speaker 2: I bought all these people. We packed from head to toe.
- 33:18Speaker 2: And the next day they were like, this should be
- 33:20Speaker 2: your place. We're gonna sell it to you, and they
- 33:23Speaker 2: gave me a good price, and I said, that's a
- 33:27Speaker 2: me I wanted. You know, I'm gonna do it. But
- 33:31Speaker 2: I got two things into it and it wasn't up
- 33:35Speaker 2: to my step two weeks into it, and I was like,
- 33:37Speaker 2: I gotta gut this place right quick. But I didn't
- 33:40Speaker 2: have the money and to do it. And then I
- 33:43Speaker 2: did this. I had this thing called Blossoms that was
- 33:49Speaker 2: it was crazy. Actually I went from Spy Club to
- 33:53Speaker 2: the rents to Blossoms and Blossoms was something I did
- 33:58Speaker 2: on Saturdays only. And I swear to God, it didn't
- 34:01Speaker 2: matter what Saturday it was. It was like God would
- 34:03Speaker 2: turn his stick it off. It was born raining because
- 34:06Speaker 2: it was indoor outdoor. As a matter of fact, that
- 34:07Speaker 2: God to partner with me at Spy Club. He said,
- 34:15Speaker 2: hold on, you're telling me that they're gonna pay money
- 34:18Speaker 2: to go just across that line, but they can see
- 34:20Speaker 2: it from right here. He said, now you go ahead
- 34:22Speaker 2: and do it. And I said, all right. I said,
- 34:25Speaker 2: but you lost money with me on this other thing
- 34:26Speaker 2: we're gonna do, so you ain't anybody Blossoms shock. I
- 34:32Speaker 2: mean everybody flew in town. And I used though one
- 34:34Speaker 2: of those remember those searchlights, those big spotlights they used
- 34:37Speaker 2: in Hollywood, and they God, I would have there and
- 34:40Speaker 2: everybody would see the light and they couldn't wait till
- 34:42Speaker 2: they got in town. They just followed the light and everything.
- 34:45Speaker 2: And every Saturday night, three four thousand people just trying
- 34:49Speaker 2: to get it. It was just crazy. Well, when I
- 34:52Speaker 2: got Republic Gardens, I gouted it and I was using
- 34:56Speaker 2: the money from Blossoms. And then I had this beach party.
- 35:02Speaker 2: Well I thought it was crazy. It was crazy looking,
- 35:05Speaker 2: it was crazy out my pockets too, but it cost me.
- 35:08Speaker 2: I lost eighty thousand. But again, you're only as good
- 35:13Speaker 2: as your last party. So I had to make everybody
- 35:15Speaker 2: think it was the greatest thing ever. You know, everyfe
- 35:17Speaker 2: I thought I made a million dollars. The people that
- 35:20Speaker 2: was working on Republic Gardens were like, oo, good, he
- 35:22Speaker 2: made some money last night. No, they I just lost
- 35:24Speaker 2: eighty thousand. And you know, but you got to keep
- 35:27Speaker 2: it going. So of course you borrown from here, you're
- 35:31Speaker 2: getting them from that person. We got Republic Gardens redone open,
- 35:37Speaker 2: Republic Gardens became it. It was my son's I think
- 35:41Speaker 2: eleventh birthday party, and we were tired of the slumlord
- 35:45Speaker 2: that we had. He used to do everything. We had
- 35:47Speaker 2: all star at Republic Gardens. We had a parking lot,
- 35:51Speaker 2: had five thousand people, Jay Z R. Kelly and somebody
- 35:56Speaker 2: else all on stage. It's crazy, and I mean it's
- 36:01Speaker 2: just phenomenal in the parking lot.
- 36:04Speaker 1: But this landlord.
- 36:06Speaker 2: He's bringing dumpsters, blocking the alley, just stupid things. Anything
- 36:11Speaker 2: he can do. So we're going out to Annapolis and
- 36:15Speaker 2: I'm telling my wife. I was like, we got to
- 36:17Speaker 2: get our own place. We gotta do something. We gotta
- 36:19Speaker 2: get out of there. And I'm just driving down New
- 36:23Speaker 2: York Avenue and I'm like, like, that building right there,
- 36:27Speaker 2: it's for sale. She was like, Okay, we're in the
- 36:31Speaker 2: worst neighborhood in all of DC. That's what Ivy City was.
- 36:36Speaker 2: It was literally the worst at that time. She says.
- 36:42Speaker 1: I said, call the number.
- 36:45Speaker 2: She said to me, she said, your friend is going
- 36:47Speaker 2: to meet you there tomorrow and talk to you about
- 36:50Speaker 2: the building. God named George Basilico. He meets me. I
- 36:54Speaker 2: walked through the building. This place is so dilapidated and
- 36:59Speaker 2: messed up. They use it for police dogs to search
- 37:01Speaker 2: for drugs, to train them. I mean, it was. It's
- 37:05Speaker 2: just the worst building ever. The floor is dirty. It
- 37:08Speaker 2: used to be a Kodak factory forty fifty years ago,
- 37:13Speaker 2: you know what I'm saying, Like it was it just
- 37:15Speaker 2: just a warehouse that was just the lapidated. So then
- 37:20Speaker 2: I said to him, I said, what do you want
- 37:21Speaker 2: for the building, we do the walk through. He said,
- 37:25Speaker 2: I want a million dollar. I said, I'm gonna pay it.
- 37:28Speaker 2: I said, you just got to take the note back.
- 37:30Speaker 2: I'm gonna give you ten thousand dollars a month between
- 37:33Speaker 2: now and next year, and this time next year, I'll
- 37:36Speaker 2: pay you for the building. He said, okay, he was
- 37:40Speaker 2: getting ten grand for I didn't even you know, try
- 37:43Speaker 2: to work no deal with them. I wanted the building, now,
- 37:46Speaker 2: mind you. My boy called red God rest his soul.
- 37:50Speaker 2: I had to go borrow the first seventeen thousand dollars
- 37:52Speaker 2: to get this one to put down on the building
- 37:54Speaker 2: because I didn't have And then I went around to
- 37:59Speaker 2: all all the work spots where you get the people
- 38:04Speaker 2: that you know, the day labor people, And that's where
- 38:07Speaker 2: I got all my people. Home depot, Home home debot.
- 38:10Speaker 2: We had a place called Weenie Beanie out here that
- 38:13Speaker 2: I used to Shelton bro get the truck in. Yeah, yeah,
- 38:16Speaker 2: the truck and they fighting to get in. But I'm
- 38:18Speaker 2: taking twenty thirty guys every.
- 38:20Speaker 1: Good old days. Can't do that anymore.
- 38:23Speaker 2: No, two thousands. That was two thousand, I mean two
- 38:27Speaker 2: thousand and one, twenty dollars a day. That true nah, nah,
- 38:30Speaker 2: we was getting they was getting ten dollars an hour.
- 38:32Speaker 2: They was getting ten dollars an hour, and we were
- 38:35Speaker 2: paying them, you know, right there. And I had a
- 38:38Speaker 2: brother in law that was Spanish that had left my
- 38:41Speaker 2: sister and she didn't even know he was living with
- 38:43Speaker 2: me at the time. But he was the key because
- 38:49Speaker 2: he's sposed to be. He spoke the language, you know,
- 38:52Speaker 2: and even when I'd be caussling them out, he'd be like,
- 38:54Speaker 2: They'd be like, what do you say? He loves to work, y'all,
- 38:59Speaker 2: y'all just say what they say. So he just kept
- 39:03Speaker 2: the peace. He got to go on and everything. Anyway.
- 39:06Speaker 2: I thought it was gonna cost me a million five
- 39:10Speaker 2: six million dollars later who burrowed it?
- 39:13Speaker 1: And I got a group called Politicady for work to
- 39:16Speaker 1: renovate the whole to.
- 39:18Speaker 2: Renovate the whole thing. I was working off a demo
- 39:20Speaker 2: permit at first, but I wasn't half assed and none
- 39:27Speaker 2: of the work. I only wanted the best because I
- 39:30Speaker 2: said that they come after me. I want to be
- 39:32Speaker 2: perfect already. You didn't traditional mind thinks I'm going to
- 39:37Speaker 2: a bath to get this. There was no I started
- 39:40Speaker 2: the next day. It took me one hundred and eighty
- 39:44Speaker 2: dumpsters to empty all the stuff that was in the building.
- 39:49Speaker 2: One hundred and eighty dumps I mean, like, you can't
- 39:52Speaker 2: even I made my man. The guy had a dumpster company.
- 39:55Speaker 2: I know, I made his month. Baby. I was just
- 39:57Speaker 2: filling these dumpsters left and right. And then there was
- 40:02Speaker 2: no architecture drawings. I said, we're gonna put the bar
- 40:04Speaker 2: right here. We're gonna move a bar over here. We're
- 40:07Speaker 2: gonna do this here. This part took me three times longer,
- 40:14Speaker 2: and its four dream was four times the size of
- 40:17Speaker 2: this building. Because permitting, permitting, permitting, doing this, doing.
- 40:22Speaker 1: That, doing that.
- 40:23Speaker 2: But the city I had the city behind me. I
- 40:27Speaker 2: had the higher ups there, and they came down on
- 40:31Speaker 2: me and they were like, you got to get your
- 40:32Speaker 2: ship right. You got to get these permits right. You
- 40:35Speaker 2: gotta get But they they embraced it. The neighborhood embraced it.
- 40:40Speaker 2: They wanted something better, and they saw that I was
- 40:43Speaker 2: doing something that that became dream, That became dream.
- 40:48Speaker 1: So you had so you borrowed six.
- 40:50Speaker 2: Million dollars, six million dollars at thirty two percent.
- 40:53Speaker 1: He borrowed six million dollars thirty two percent from from
- 40:56Speaker 1: like a hard money lender, their hard money lenners, and
- 40:58Speaker 1: they gave it to you six million dollars one or
- 41:00Speaker 1: it was a million. Group gave me two point five.
- 41:03Speaker 2: So first of all, you got the million dollars first
- 41:06Speaker 2: on the building. I had to get him to move
- 41:10Speaker 2: to second place, behind the guy that was giving me
- 41:13Speaker 2: the two point five million. Then I had to get
- 41:19Speaker 2: another one after that, and I had to get the
- 41:22Speaker 2: two point five to move the second place to owner
- 41:24Speaker 2: of the building to move the third place. And then
- 41:26Speaker 2: someone else gave me another two point two million, and
- 41:31Speaker 2: then I got another seven hundred thousand from friends. So
- 41:35Speaker 2: I was six million dollars in And were.
- 41:38Speaker 1: You making money at that time before it even opened?
- 41:41Speaker 2: That's before it opened. But it only took me six
- 41:44Speaker 2: months to build a fifty four thousand square foot building.
- 41:50Speaker 2: Six months six.
- 41:51Speaker 1: Months, that's how big that was.
- 41:52Speaker 2: Yeah, are you sleeping at this hung like? I mean, oh,
- 41:55Speaker 2: I can imagine. Then the hold of home seven hundred
- 41:58Speaker 2: thousand dollars over drawing is what woke you up every day?
- 42:02Speaker 1: What was your was your monthly?
- 42:03Speaker 2: Payback was your monthly but I really wasn't paying back.
- 42:07Speaker 1: It was deferred it was deferred.
- 42:09Speaker 2: It was everybody was deferring everything they saw. Nobody had
- 42:13Speaker 2: a problem. And then they tried to get me to
- 42:17Speaker 2: open it with just the first floor, and I was like,
- 42:20Speaker 2: it's not going to be dream if it's not the
- 42:24Speaker 2: whole thing. So I got them to believe, and I
- 42:28Speaker 2: got them to believe, and everybody got them to believe.
- 42:30Speaker 2: And the guys like, you know, the last guys to
- 42:33Speaker 2: give me the money, they were like, well, I know
- 42:34Speaker 2: I can tell this with two point five no matter why,
- 42:36Speaker 2: I'm gonna get my money. They were all, you know,
- 42:38Speaker 2: everybody else was behind them, but everybody believed in it. Now.
- 42:42Speaker 2: The guys that gave me the second money, they had
- 42:45Speaker 2: a white guy that was in there, and they were like,
- 42:47Speaker 2: he's staying here till we get our money back. Well,
- 42:50Speaker 2: of course, everybody that came to the building called the
- 42:52Speaker 2: white guy on the bill. You know what I'm saying, Well,
- 42:55Speaker 2: you got it for a million? Did it praise for
- 42:57Speaker 2: a MILLI? Or was it praise for much more? They
- 42:59Speaker 2: did weren't to praise for it was a dumpster. It
- 43:02Speaker 2: was a dumpster.
- 43:02Speaker 3: After you renovated, he's looking at like, oh, he did
- 43:04Speaker 3: a good job. That's at least two point five right, gotcha.
- 43:06Speaker 2: Well, remember but he's after he's got it, he's now
- 43:11Speaker 2: not he's after five million dollars. Now. He then gone
- 43:15Speaker 2: to third place on the building. So this guy was
- 43:19Speaker 2: just a good guy. He really believed in me.
- 43:23Speaker 1: So how you get it up and running? And then
- 43:25Speaker 1: how much money you start?
- 43:26Speaker 2: Like how how quick you got to remember I had
- 43:28Speaker 2: my first liquor order was a quarter million dollars.
- 43:31Speaker 1: Looker order for you to get the whole bars at
- 43:34Speaker 1: all the bars.
- 43:35Speaker 2: The next week, I needed another quarter million dollars and
- 43:38Speaker 2: they wanted their money right there.
- 43:40Speaker 1: To where'd you get that money from?
- 43:42Speaker 2: You borrowed it from somebody else.
- 43:44Speaker 1: So using a whole like eight million dollars, yep, that's
- 43:46Speaker 1: why you got that friend, more like seven million. So
- 43:49Speaker 1: when did you start actually making money?
- 43:52Speaker 2: It wasn't until the second year because you got to
- 43:54Speaker 2: remember all the payments. Then as soon as people see
- 43:56Speaker 2: you making money, they want the money. They want that money.
- 43:58Speaker 1: Well, I mean you was making enough money start paying
- 44:00Speaker 1: people back?
- 44:01Speaker 2: I was, but I didn't know how to run a
- 44:03Speaker 2: staff of three hundred and fifty people, you know what
- 44:07Speaker 2: I'm saying, Like I don't know what payroll is for
- 44:10Speaker 2: three hundred and fifty people.
- 44:12Speaker 1: There was we had. Remember those tubes that Home Depot had.
- 44:17Speaker 2: They used to put the money in and shoot them up,
- 44:19Speaker 2: and you shoot them up to the aufice the wire.
- 44:22Speaker 2: That's the dumbest shit in the whole world. I spent
- 44:23Speaker 2: one hundred thousand dollars on those tubes because I thought,
- 44:27Speaker 2: you know, we gotta watch out that somebody gonna rob us.
- 44:29Speaker 2: What's happening here? I mean, everything was a problem in
- 44:33Speaker 2: the neighborhood. They loved me, but they hated me. They said,
- 44:37Speaker 2: you can't park, you can't start any of your events.
- 44:40Speaker 2: No for six because we need to get home from work.
- 44:42Speaker 2: But they didn't want to get home from work. They
- 44:43Speaker 2: would leave their cars at work and they'd be in
- 44:46Speaker 2: there selling their driveway spots for fifty and one hundred dollars.
- 44:50Speaker 2: Because you got to remember, there was no uber back there.
- 44:53Speaker 2: There wasn't none of the stuff that we got. People
- 44:55Speaker 2: wasn't going. This ain't New York City. There's no taxi
- 44:59Speaker 2: moving around like that in DC. So everybody was driving. Oh,
- 45:05Speaker 2: parking was my money though, parking. All I wanted was
- 45:09Speaker 2: parking and.
- 45:10Speaker 6: Coachat how much was Kacha fifteen thousand a night fifteen
- 45:16Speaker 6: parking with another fifteen to twenty thousand the night cash cash, But.
- 45:20Speaker 2: I was paying taxes.
- 45:26Speaker 1: So he's getting forty thousand night off of parking and coaching.
- 45:29Speaker 2: Gilbertarina's party parking did fifty thousand dollars.
- 45:34Speaker 1: We're gonna get to that. We don't get together with
- 45:35Speaker 1: that another. So okay, so you up and running now,
- 45:38Speaker 1: and now you really start to hit your stride.
- 45:40Speaker 2: I'm hitting the stride. But now at first, remember the
- 45:45Speaker 2: big club, I mean y'all in New York. But y'all
- 45:47Speaker 2: was still a little young for knowing stuff about the tunnel.
- 45:50Speaker 1: Yeah, that was before my time. I know, I know
- 45:52Speaker 1: about it, but i'll it closed. As we were getting
- 45:55Speaker 1: I was like, right they were doing.
- 45:57Speaker 2: The tunnel became the tunnel into our general. See once
- 46:01Speaker 2: you what happened is once the tunnel went black, that
- 46:07Speaker 2: was the money.
- 46:08Speaker 1: Oh ship, hold on, what is this.
- 46:10Speaker 2: There's a difference between black money and white money and
- 46:13Speaker 2: a night. And there's no club that says they gonna
- 46:16Speaker 2: start out black.
- 46:18Speaker 1: H They're not. They just they not.
- 46:21Speaker 2: Gonna do it. They they they they're going to get
- 46:27Speaker 2: the white money. They think, they think white money is it?
- 46:34Speaker 2: Friday night was my white knight, Saturday night was, I mean,
- 46:38Speaker 2: Friday night was my black knight. Saturday night was my
- 46:41Speaker 2: white night at Dream. Friday night was doing a quarter million,
- 46:47Speaker 2: Saturday Night was maybe during eighty. You just can't get it.
- 46:53Speaker 2: It's the difference and nobody understands it. Do you want
- 46:57Speaker 2: an Emen Markets or do you want Walmart? Well seeing
- 47:01Speaker 2: co check drinks bottle service, so you're saying its bottle service.
- 47:06Speaker 2: But I didn't even know back then.
- 47:08Speaker 1: So there's more money with the black Oh it crushes
- 47:12Speaker 1: nowadays there are no clubs that stay white. So talk
- 47:18Speaker 1: about all right, there's no club to stay white because
- 47:21Speaker 1: black people spend more money on nightlight than white people.
- 47:23Speaker 2: Yes, that's what I'm saying. That's the people spend money
- 47:27Speaker 2: on drugs inside the club, inside that club lesly allegedly.
- 47:32Speaker 1: Alleged, but that's what I saying. So winning there I
- 47:36Speaker 1: can even say.
- 47:37Speaker 2: You can say allegedly except that I would do twenty
- 47:40Speaker 2: five hundred.
- 47:41Speaker 1: White people here at part.
- 47:44Speaker 2: When I opened, I didn't want to handibalize love, so
- 47:48Speaker 2: I said we're gonna I bought this white boy in
- 47:50Speaker 2: from Vegas. We're gonna tell everybody you own the joint
- 47:54Speaker 2: when I opened, When I opened part, you own the joint.
- 47:57Speaker 2: That is a lot of said. We're doing twenty five
- 47:59Speaker 2: hundred people on night. I'm doing forty fifty thousand dollars.
- 48:04Speaker 1: I'm like.
- 48:06Speaker 2: Twenty dollars that I'm watching bartenders, I'm watching the staff.
- 48:10Speaker 2: I'm like skimming this. How the fuck are y'all stealing
- 48:13Speaker 2: my money?
- 48:13Speaker 1: Just fine beer. That's where we get to two on
- 48:15Speaker 1: the fifty cameras, Yeah and so, and then the black people,
- 48:18Speaker 1: how much they doing so? So?
- 48:21Speaker 2: Then I decided here that I was going I did
- 48:25Speaker 2: a black party on a Thursday. On a Thursday, I
- 48:29Speaker 2: did seventy five. I only got twelve hundred people. On Friday,
- 48:36Speaker 2: I'm doing forty five. Something's wrong with this equation.
- 48:42Speaker 1: I'm doing twenty five hundred people.
- 48:44Speaker 2: I said, we're gonna try the black thing on Friday.
- 48:48Speaker 2: I went up from forty five to one hundred and
- 48:51Speaker 2: thirty five. What you doing? That's gonna be Friday, Saturday,
- 48:55Speaker 2: and Sunday. It's gonna be Friday.
- 48:57Speaker 1: Since Jesus, there's no question at this time is food
- 49:04Speaker 1: even involved yet?
- 49:05Speaker 2: The food is always involved fool's in. So hold on,
- 49:08Speaker 2: hold on, hold on, So let me explain to you
- 49:09Speaker 2: what happened. I missed a step here. I hated I
- 49:17Speaker 2: loved doing happy hour five to ten at other people's club.
- 49:21Speaker 2: I was done by ten o'clock and I had already
- 49:24Speaker 2: got everybody drunk and killed everybody else's I destroyed.
- 49:29Speaker 1: The club life. The late night.
- 49:31Speaker 2: After you drink, you've been partying for five hours. I
- 49:35Speaker 2: used to do. I would be like penny drinks for
- 49:39Speaker 2: the first hour, because see, this is what you gotta
- 49:41Speaker 2: remember us. It don't matter.
- 49:43Speaker 1: Once you in there, you're not gonna stop.
- 49:47Speaker 2: You're not gonna stop. And once you can't get to
- 49:50Speaker 2: the bar, you can't get drinks. You know, the guys
- 49:53Speaker 2: were coming with their piggy banks. I'm buying the bar,
- 49:55Speaker 2: throwing the pennies, fell over the bar, you know, all
- 49:58Speaker 2: that stupid stuff and everything. But if I open at
- 50:04Speaker 2: five and the penny drinks in at seven, because people
- 50:08Speaker 2: you know, in line getting in there to go to work,
- 50:11Speaker 2: the first drink is paying for whatever the liquor costs.
- 50:16Speaker 2: Back then, it was twenty five cents that the liquor
- 50:19Speaker 2: was costing the rink now it's seventy five cents to
- 50:22Speaker 2: a dollar, a dollar and a half. Now you know
- 50:24Speaker 2: what I'm saying, man, unless you drinking do.
- 50:26Speaker 1: So what liquor cost a dollar and a half for
- 50:28Speaker 1: a drink?
- 50:29Speaker 2: Well, when you were buying drinks for seven dollars and
- 50:31Speaker 2: fifty cent that's yeah. So like like right now it's
- 50:35Speaker 2: like twenty dollars a drink, twenty dollars a drink. But
- 50:39Speaker 2: you buy a bottle of don Refo for forty dollars, right,
- 50:44Speaker 2: you get eighteen drinks let's say fifteen. Okay, so that's
- 50:47Speaker 2: three dollars a drink, right right, that's inflation. That's inflation.
- 50:53Speaker 2: But now when people say, now the pre game is
- 50:56Speaker 2: crazy now, and it's especially in this younger audience. But
- 51:01Speaker 2: we can get back with that. Let's go back to
- 51:04Speaker 2: where you want to go back to Dream?
- 51:06Speaker 1: How we got in there? And yeah, how'd you get
- 51:09Speaker 1: dream with lip?
- 51:10Speaker 2: But my problem with Dream is that I was doing
- 51:13Speaker 2: an artist every week.
- 51:16Speaker 1: I was dependent on the artists.
- 51:19Speaker 2: Because we went when when my numbers hit fifty five
- 51:23Speaker 2: hundred people in one night, I went crazy. I got
- 51:28Speaker 2: forty managers. I'm like, what the fuck are y'all doing
- 51:31Speaker 2: y'all bullshitting da da da dah. We have to ask
- 51:34Speaker 2: and fifty five hundred people, and I'm cussing people outs.
- 51:39Speaker 2: And the biggest problem is I didn't know how to
- 51:41Speaker 2: clean carpets. So why do I got carpet? I learned
- 51:47Speaker 2: this at Republic Ardens. So I'm in Republic Gardens and
- 51:53Speaker 2: I got hard with floors, beautiful hard with floors. I'm
- 51:57Speaker 2: replacing the hard with floors. And the wood don't come
- 52:00Speaker 2: in in time, but I've already stripped them out. So
- 52:02Speaker 2: I go into my man's carpet shop. I said, give
- 52:04Speaker 2: me some carpet. It's just gonna be there for two weeks. Man,
- 52:08Speaker 2: this bar in the back room that I put the
- 52:11Speaker 2: carpet in is killing it.
- 52:14Speaker 1: Oh women, it's easier to stand on.
- 52:17Speaker 2: Women can stand up twice as long on carpet as
- 52:21Speaker 2: they can concrete. But what's the problem with carpet? So
- 52:27Speaker 2: now you ain't gonna have no slipping fall? It thinks
- 52:32Speaker 2: you gotta learn how to clean it. What carpet should
- 52:35Speaker 2: you have? That juice is sitting down there? This is
- 52:38Speaker 2: what I try to tell people. You have a party
- 52:41Speaker 2: at your house, seven your friends, right, they destroy it
- 52:46Speaker 2: not destroy, but they fuck up something. They're gonna fuck
- 52:48Speaker 2: up something. They're gonna fuck up something. These ain't my friends.
- 52:52Speaker 2: They that'sy hummus, your white gut hair. Yeah, how much
- 52:58Speaker 2: care come up with them? A lot a lot of hair.
- 53:03Speaker 1: That's one. I don't know how many girls you got
- 53:05Speaker 1: in your house.
- 53:07Speaker 2: Two girls, and there's a lot of hair in the
- 53:09Speaker 2: goddamn vacuum clean that's.
- 53:11Speaker 1: Two people, and you cutting the hair out of the
- 53:14Speaker 1: vacuum cleaner.
- 53:18Speaker 2: When you get the weeds involved. I got five thousand
- 53:22Speaker 2: coming through a week, are you kidding? I got I
- 53:28Speaker 2: keep eight vacuum cleaners in the shop and eight vacuum
- 53:32Speaker 2: cleaners in the building, so I can just trade out
- 53:36Speaker 2: all eight. Even though my man can clean them, they
- 53:39Speaker 2: still tell these vacuum cleaner up. The problem is bus
- 53:42Speaker 2: boys don't care what it is. They'll vacuum it up,
- 53:47Speaker 2: the v up. They will vacuum anything. They will vacuum.
- 53:52Speaker 1: Throw up up.
- 53:54Speaker 2: And no matter how much you try to teach people,
- 53:57Speaker 2: is that so you got? I had to go Vegas.
- 54:00Speaker 2: I was like, how the fuck do they clean their carpets?
- 54:04Speaker 2: I'm sitting up all night watching these motherfuckers clean the carpet.
- 54:08Speaker 2: The problem with carpet is you can shampoo it as
- 54:11Speaker 2: much as you want. What happens when you leave your
- 54:14Speaker 2: closing the washing machine. It's got it if you don't
- 54:19Speaker 2: dry it. So now I have to figure out that
- 54:23Speaker 2: you gotta dry your carpet or it's gonna stink. And
- 54:28Speaker 2: you gotta have the right type of carpet. You gotta
- 54:30Speaker 2: have to rub it back so that that doesn't sit
- 54:32Speaker 2: in the back of the carpet. So you gotta do
- 54:35Speaker 2: all of these things because I don't want to lose
- 54:37Speaker 2: my carpet. Because carpet's ten times better. The room is warm,
- 54:43Speaker 2: it feels good already. You don't mean nothing else. But
- 54:49Speaker 2: people don't stand all this. So it's learning all of
- 54:53Speaker 2: these pieces of the puzzle. Now it does take twice
- 54:56Speaker 2: as long to close your place down. You know, other
- 54:59Speaker 2: places they cleaning, They trying to mop the floor and
- 55:01Speaker 2: this and that. But people are stupid and cheap. You
- 55:04Speaker 2: gotta change your map hereds every week, even on the floors.
- 55:07Speaker 2: You there, or you get thirty mile war just through
- 55:10Speaker 2: the way. They cost two dollars and fifty cents. It's
- 55:14Speaker 2: just like people give bad sodas for great drinks? Why
- 55:19Speaker 2: am I not gonna use simply lemonade to go along
- 55:23Speaker 2: with the dou say or whatever else you want to
- 55:27Speaker 2: put in that? You got a great lemonade drink you
- 55:30Speaker 2: want to drink? You like simply lemonade? Do you love it?
- 55:33Speaker 2: If I put that at your table, You're gonna pour
- 55:35Speaker 2: that liquor twice as quick.
- 55:37Speaker 1: Simply lemonade only cost you three dollars.
- 55:40Speaker 2: That bottle cost you three fifty four hundred in Miami.
- 55:44Speaker 1: It cost you seventy fifty When you don't when you
- 55:47Speaker 1: said that you was relying on artists, how'd you fix that?
- 55:51Speaker 2: I said, I'm gonna spend more money in customer service.
- 55:57Speaker 2: I don't want no more artists. I'm not doing no
- 56:00Speaker 2: artists for no reason. If they come in here, it's
- 56:04Speaker 2: because someone else paid for it. I'm not doing no artists.
- 56:08Speaker 2: And I want the event, the building, the customer service.
- 56:12Speaker 3: I want people to love. The people at park pakes
- 56:19Speaker 3: sense so at the at his peak before dream turns
- 56:23Speaker 3: to love?
- 56:24Speaker 1: Now is it?
- 56:25Speaker 2: Black? Friday said, how much would we bring?
- 56:28Speaker 1: Is college night? Yeah?
- 56:30Speaker 2: Thursday Friday on Thursday? Yeah, okay, I got this international guy.
- 56:35Speaker 2: They were doing college stuff. Blah blah blah.
- 56:40Speaker 1: They killing it.
- 56:43Speaker 2: We're doing fifty at the bar and seventy five at
- 56:46Speaker 2: the door Friday night. A good Friday, average Friday night
- 56:52Speaker 2: is one fifty. A good Friday night is three fifty.
- 56:57Speaker 2: But I got artists, and I got extra security, and
- 57:02Speaker 2: I got extra police, and I got a drunk tank
- 57:05Speaker 2: that's full with people customer careson.
- 57:10Speaker 1: So for it.
- 57:11Speaker 2: Okay, Literally fifty people lined up. We had a triodge.
- 57:16Speaker 2: We signed every single person in to the trioge. We
- 57:22Speaker 2: had a book, every single thing for every and we
- 57:26Speaker 2: ran that from the day we opened to the day
- 57:29Speaker 2: I lie. Why do you believe it was too much?
- 57:34Speaker 2: I got caught up in the uh in the two
- 57:36Speaker 2: thousand seven eight, had too many properties I owned drink,
- 57:42Speaker 2: I had too many. I needed to get out of
- 57:44Speaker 2: that financial prices. Yeah, and and the numbers had dropped
- 57:49Speaker 2: down to twenty and three thousand unless I had the
- 57:53Speaker 2: right artists, and then this life is not conducive to
- 58:01Speaker 2: any type of relationship. It just thinks. It's just not.
- 58:14Speaker 2: It's not conducive to any type of relationship. You know
- 58:17Speaker 2: what I'm saying, Like your job is to be friends
- 58:21Speaker 2: with every beautiful woman in the place. You know what
- 58:26Speaker 2: I'm saying.
- 58:27Speaker 1: It's like Saint Patrick, Jean, what's his name, James, James,
- 58:30Speaker 1: Saint Patrick. You like the real life James Saint Patrick.
- 58:33Speaker 2: Oh, I'm sorry. You know he ain't watched Power, you know,
- 58:36Speaker 2: Power fifty cent show. It just is not conducive. Well,
- 58:43Speaker 2: I'm not the real life because I ain't got nothing
- 58:45Speaker 2: to do with That's all that. I liked it. But
- 58:50Speaker 2: the whole that wasn't what the FBI d eight though
- 58:55Speaker 2: my bank I took it was a fourth of July weekend.
- 58:59Speaker 2: We had seven hundred thousand cash we took to the bank.
- 59:04Speaker 1: What year was that?
- 59:06Speaker 2: That was twenty two, I mean two thousand and two,
- 59:10Speaker 2: two thousand and two after, not eleven.
- 59:12Speaker 1: Yeah, so you took seven hundred thousand dollars to the bank, to.
- 59:15Speaker 2: The bank, seven hundred thousand dollars cash, and then we
- 59:17Speaker 2: have yeah, well cause not like it was the year after,
- 59:22Speaker 2: because you're two thousand and one. And that because that's
- 59:23Speaker 2: where they changed the thinking was that And and so
- 59:27Speaker 2: the guys who Power Fuel, who had given me the money,
- 59:31Speaker 2: they knew they were counting all the money I didn't give.
- 59:33Speaker 2: Fuck you know what I'm saying, like, y'all count the money.
- 59:35Speaker 2: You know, we know it's there, and we took the
- 59:38Speaker 2: seven hundred thousand. They called da FBI, everybody on me.
- 59:44Speaker 2: They came in there. They want to go to the bank.
- 59:46Speaker 2: They want to see all the videotapes and everything with
- 59:49Speaker 2: the one thing that I got, Like in here, there's
- 59:51Speaker 2: two hundred and fifty counts. I'm going to tell you
- 59:55Speaker 2: where your purse is, where your wallet is, who pickpocketed
- 59:59Speaker 2: you in anything?
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: The one thing Park is going to do.
- 1:00:03Speaker 2: We had cameras at drink, but we got more here
- 1:00:06Speaker 2: than we had a drink. Uh, so we could see everything.
- 1:00:10Speaker 2: We were like, come watch the videos, come see you.
- 1:00:12Speaker 2: You count the people to come in there. They literally
- 1:00:15Speaker 2: sat in there for squad weeks, thirteen weeks then and
- 1:00:18Speaker 2: just went through everything they want to go through, go through.
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: That was hell or dream dream. So you so, all right,
- 1:00:24Speaker 1: so your exit dream, you get hit the financial crisis,
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: you recalibrate, and then the bankruptcy, and then you come
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: back to Park. Yes, that's the that's the second wave
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: of it.
- 1:00:37Speaker 2: But at that point, I'm like, I'm never doing an
- 1:00:39Speaker 2: artist again. I'm done with artists. Artists kill me. They
- 1:00:44Speaker 2: want the money. I can't do that, even though at
- 1:00:50Speaker 2: the beginning, after two thousand and ten, I think it
- 1:00:55Speaker 2: was we never did artists. At the beginning, we were
- 1:00:57Speaker 2: doing we did everybody here too.
- 1:01:00Speaker 1: So you just it's just straight straight parties, yep.
- 1:01:04Speaker 2: And I do have a couple of groups who've come
- 1:01:08Speaker 2: up now, but you do the brunch thing too. So
- 1:01:11Speaker 2: but before I didn't do Bright Lord, so the bright
- 1:01:14Speaker 2: saved it.
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: But before let's bow, let's talk about this bottle service era.
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: When did the bottle service era hit? Because we saw
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: it hit in New York, we saw it hit Miami.
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: When did it hit DC? And how did that drastically change?
- 1:01:27Speaker 2: It hit?
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: It hit Dream? It hit Dream.
- 1:01:32Speaker 2: But I didn't know what was going on. There was
- 1:01:36Speaker 2: door money, there was parking money, and there was ko chap.
- 1:01:40Speaker 2: I wouldn't even think, girl, y'all go ahead tell me
- 1:01:43Speaker 2: at the end of the night, what y'all did in
- 1:01:44Speaker 2: bottle service.
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: Instead of that, I wasn't even really interested in it.
- 1:01:49Speaker 2: And the thing was, if you with the girl in
- 1:01:52Speaker 2: charge of the bottle service, you with a god. Well,
- 1:01:56Speaker 2: first of all, anybody who worked at Dream was a god.
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: I mean, because they opened the doors to get it.
- 1:02:07Speaker 2: People, ain't you were in the most powerful place in
- 1:02:10Speaker 2: the country at the time. The ideos meetings were about
- 1:02:15Speaker 2: how are these motherfuckers selling so much? And how can
- 1:02:17Speaker 2: we get other people to do it?
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: How much nigge was you selling.
- 1:02:23Speaker 2: One hundred k? We were take a hundred one hundred
- 1:02:26Speaker 2: ks drops pallets they would just take they I was
- 1:02:29Speaker 2: selling so much.
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: Absolute They flew me down private.
- 1:02:34Speaker 2: Plane, gave me a house and sent me to the Masters.
- 1:02:43Speaker 2: When they called me and said we got tickets for
- 1:02:45Speaker 2: you to the Masters, I was like, what the fuck
- 1:02:47Speaker 2: is that?
- 1:02:47Speaker 1: I know?
- 1:02:48Speaker 2: I don't know nothing about golf. And they were like,
- 1:02:50Speaker 2: it's the super Bowl of Golf. And I was like,
- 1:02:53Speaker 2: I don't want them. They were like you want these
- 1:02:56Speaker 2: fucking tickets? Run and said They said, can you call
- 1:02:59Speaker 2: just one person and that plays golf and asked us
- 1:03:02Speaker 2: I called my boy, this boy, Jack Murray White Boy.
- 1:03:05Speaker 2: I was like, what's this master Ship?
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: He was like, oh my god, what the fuck you mean?
- 1:03:11Speaker 2: I was like, these motherfuckers want to give me tickets
- 1:03:12Speaker 2: to the master And they said I want to go?
- 1:03:14Speaker 2: Do I want to go?
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: He was like, yeah, I want to go.
- 1:03:16Speaker 2: I said, you want to go with me. He was like,
- 1:03:18Speaker 2: you're damn right, I want to go. And he was
- 1:03:20Speaker 2: in charge of radio at Radio one. I was selling
- 1:03:24Speaker 2: all the radio, so you know, I took my boy
- 1:03:26Speaker 2: and everything. You know, we went down there. I still
- 1:03:29Speaker 2: didn't get talking. You know, it just wasn't my thing.
- 1:03:31Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying. I got on an early
- 1:03:33Speaker 2: plane coming back. Okay, I'm standing there with VJ singing
- 1:03:37Speaker 2: and all that golf.
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: Just say shout so all right. So but when the
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: bottle service hit, you didn't fully understand it that It.
- 1:03:45Speaker 2: Was like I didn't.
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: So it's like Neo Brown, like he didn't fully understand
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: what the crack was until he wan. You had to
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: at some point you do. No, no, eventually, no, no, no.
- 1:03:55Speaker 2: That's why Gilbert's party was a million dollar party because
- 1:03:59Speaker 2: we saw four hundred thousand and bottle service table.
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: Let's just get to that party because you keep talking
- 1:04:04Speaker 1: about it. Was it a million or two million?
- 1:04:05Speaker 2: It was a million. It wasn't talking about the party,
- 1:04:08Speaker 2: it was a million. So Gilbert comes to me, it
- 1:04:11Speaker 2: was marking task back.
- 1:04:12Speaker 1: This This is when he was he was with the ratchet.
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: He before the ratchet up, after the ratchet. I don't
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: think Gilbert really was the racket. I mean, he's the man,
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: he was the man.
- 1:04:24Speaker 2: But but but he wasn't the man, and I didn't.
- 1:04:28Speaker 2: So when I did at Republic Gardens, it was marked.
- 1:04:32Speaker 2: It was marking task. So when I went to Dream
- 1:04:37Speaker 2: it was marking tas. We did these parties together. But
- 1:04:40Speaker 2: because again I'm sixty two and I was getting older,
- 1:04:43Speaker 2: and I was like, who wants to go party with
- 1:04:46Speaker 2: the with the dad? You know what I'm saying. So
- 1:04:49Speaker 2: I would always try to bring in the younger motherfucking
- 1:04:52Speaker 2: crowds and keep relevant when I got When we got there,
- 1:05:00Speaker 2: gil Tak used to play ball, so he knew all
- 1:05:04Speaker 2: the ballplayers. He knew all he knew the street, and
- 1:05:06Speaker 2: I knew the corny side. So he brings Gilbert in
- 1:05:10Speaker 2: and he said, he said to me, he said, Gilbert
- 1:05:12Speaker 2: want to do this? I said, who's Gilbert? Because I
- 1:05:15Speaker 2: wasn't up on it. I just was it. So he
- 1:05:21Speaker 2: comes down there. He talked to So, I said, you
- 1:05:25Speaker 2: want a birthday party? Or do you want a birthday
- 1:05:28Speaker 2: party that nobody will ever forget? He said, well, what's
- 1:05:33Speaker 2: the difference? I said, birthday party gonna cost you twenty
- 1:05:35Speaker 2: five thousand, oneerday, never gonna forget. It's gonna cost you
- 1:05:39Speaker 2: a quarter million. He said, I want one day, never
- 1:05:43Speaker 2: gonna forget. I said, if you want to write the check, baby,
- 1:05:46Speaker 2: I want to take it. He said, I want.
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: So then my biggest problem is.
- 1:05:52Speaker 2: I can't half ass nothing. I can't. It's gotta be right,
- 1:05:56Speaker 2: it's got to be done perfect. So I said, I'm
- 1:05:58Speaker 2: gonna spend this whole quarter million could show myself off
- 1:06:02Speaker 2: to make it the baddest thing.
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: We did.
- 1:06:05Speaker 2: This invitation. It was a great Gilbert Arenas. It was
- 1:06:11Speaker 2: the Arenas Express and it looked just like an American
- 1:06:15Speaker 2: Express card and it had Gilbert's picture you know that
- 1:06:20Speaker 2: what do you call it centorium or what the guy
- 1:06:23Speaker 2: that they American Express got in the middle of their car. Anyway,
- 1:06:26Speaker 2: but it had his face on it. It was the
- 1:06:30Speaker 2: sickest shit. So then he said, I want to get Poff.
- 1:06:34Speaker 2: He said, I want to get the game. I want
- 1:06:37Speaker 2: to get Ti, I want to get who else was
- 1:06:40Speaker 2: it Buster the Rhymes? I think it was like five
- 1:06:45Speaker 2: artists and.
- 1:06:47Speaker 1: He had everybody there.
- 1:06:49Speaker 2: So now you getting this black card Arenas experience that
- 1:06:55Speaker 2: came in this thing. Just you know how American Express
- 1:06:58Speaker 2: sing you their car. It looked just like a marieric.
- 1:07:00Speaker 2: I can Express. Niggas was going in the stores dropping
- 1:07:02Speaker 2: them down, you know, and everything. But every card had
- 1:07:06Speaker 2: every single person's name on that special special invite. Eight
- 1:07:11Speaker 2: thousand cards we made. We bought the machine. We had
- 1:07:15Speaker 2: two machines running day and night. People begging the body invitations.
- 1:07:19Speaker 2: We're like, it's invite only blah blah blah, this, that
- 1:07:22Speaker 2: and the other. Gilb was giving me two hundred names
- 1:07:24Speaker 2: a day. You know what I'm saying, need these? We
- 1:07:27Speaker 2: dropping them off to him. His girls aroun at when
- 1:07:31Speaker 2: I tell you. But this is January fifth. We're planning
- 1:07:38Speaker 2: for coache We're gonna check eight thousand coats US forty
- 1:07:42Speaker 2: thousand dollars. I'm gonna make in coach check. Tell me
- 1:07:46Speaker 2: what the problem was. It was hot, it was sixty
- 1:07:50Speaker 2: five degrees and the ice culture was mealthy. But I
- 1:07:56Speaker 2: was in heaven because we had to open us. We
- 1:08:00Speaker 2: into the whole street and I'll give y'all so pictures
- 1:08:04Speaker 2: of this and stuff like that. We tinted the whole street.
- 1:08:07Speaker 2: It was the most amazing thing. We had crap games
- 1:08:12Speaker 2: card games, everything. Gilbert then said, I'm flying a plane
- 1:08:16Speaker 2: from la He paying for all these artists. We do
- 1:08:20Speaker 2: four hundred thousand dollars and bottle service tables before we opened.
- 1:08:26Speaker 2: The first two hours was open bar and the food
- 1:08:30Speaker 2: was amazing. You got eight thousand people coming. I didn't
- 1:08:35Speaker 2: have a table for Ti, so I had to give
- 1:08:37Speaker 2: him the fourth floor bar with the bartenders. Because it
- 1:08:41Speaker 2: was a big bar. I said, you just back here
- 1:08:43Speaker 2: this year, bottle service tape like it was, and every
- 1:08:50Speaker 2: single floor was ridiculous. Now we were going supposed to
- 1:08:55Speaker 2: do the artists inside. We built a stage outside. My
- 1:08:59Speaker 2: man shout out to my man. He paid twenty thousand
- 1:09:01Speaker 2: for a table and because he wanted to be right
- 1:09:05Speaker 2: next to the art I mean the stage while they
- 1:09:07Speaker 2: was performed, and he wasn't up and they never came inside.
- 1:09:10Speaker 2: He don't let me. He don't let me forget that
- 1:09:13Speaker 2: he did. You know, you're only twenty thousars to this day.
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: But we sold everything.
- 1:09:19Speaker 2: The whole place was the most ridiculous thing that you'd
- 1:09:22Speaker 2: ever seen, but it was really the perfect part. Fifty
- 1:09:25Speaker 2: thousand in parking. Gilbert drove his Lamborghini into the party
- 1:09:34Speaker 2: because we tended the whole street and he drove right
- 1:09:37Speaker 2: into the middle of the party. He's in zeous. Yes,
- 1:09:42Speaker 2: it was phenomenal. When I tell you, they were talking
- 1:09:45Speaker 2: about Chennie Smith was like, do you see this? Do
- 1:09:48Speaker 2: you He's on Sports Center? Do you see this? You
- 1:09:52Speaker 2: see this invitation? I mean it was. It was the
- 1:09:56Speaker 2: most amazing thing ever. And everybody then knew dream worldwide.
- 1:10:04Speaker 2: I mean it was. It was a three page spread
- 1:10:06Speaker 2: in the Washington Post. You know what I'm saying, like,
- 1:10:09Speaker 2: oh my god, this party, pictures of him. It was.
- 1:10:13Speaker 2: It was just nothing like it.
- 1:10:14Speaker 1: Now, I didn't know.
- 1:10:15Speaker 2: Gilbert had a different agenda. He was trying to get
- 1:10:19Speaker 2: his cloud out with Adidas and everybody, and you know,
- 1:10:23Speaker 2: get his votes for All Star and everything.
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: It worked.
- 1:10:27Speaker 2: But when I tell you it worked, he was hitting
- 1:10:31Speaker 2: three pointer game winning child.
- 1:10:32Speaker 1: I mean, when I tell you.
- 1:10:34Speaker 2: It was the perfect storm for that party, it was
- 1:10:39Speaker 2: nothing ever like it. Nothing.
- 1:10:43Speaker 1: And you made four hundred thousand in bottle service, and
- 1:10:46Speaker 1: now he had already given me two fifty. I mean
- 1:10:49Speaker 1: four hundred thousand in bottle service.
- 1:10:52Speaker 2: Probably made another one hundred and fifty at the bar.
- 1:10:56Speaker 2: I don't know how much niggas made trying to sell
- 1:10:59Speaker 2: their invitations. You know what I'm saying. You know, Mike, Mike,
- 1:11:03Speaker 2: I need two more these names on it. You know,
- 1:11:06Speaker 2: everybody wanted their name.
- 1:11:08Speaker 1: When you said you didn't understand the bottle service, was
- 1:11:11Speaker 1: it the idea of people just buying a bottle or
- 1:11:14Speaker 1: the idea that they would pay this.
- 1:11:16Speaker 2: Much for a bottle? The problem was I couldn't pay
- 1:11:20Speaker 2: attention to inside because there were eight thousand people trying
- 1:11:25Speaker 2: to get in the outside. So I didn't even I'm like,
- 1:11:28Speaker 2: I don't care. I gotta figure this out. And then
- 1:11:34Speaker 2: the problem with those shoots to the money is that
- 1:11:37Speaker 2: you got to have somebody counting the money when it
- 1:11:39Speaker 2: goes in, and then somebody the other in or like
- 1:11:41Speaker 2: in those bank movies that you see, the money can
- 1:11:44Speaker 2: just go minser and nobody knew it. It wasn't setting
- 1:11:47Speaker 2: up stealings going over Oh still, So I'm telling you
- 1:11:51Speaker 2: the stealing is that all time? Huh everybody and you
- 1:11:55Speaker 2: know it. But I'm it's like you just going into
- 1:12:00Speaker 2: if you started doing the oil business business tomorrow, somebody
- 1:12:03Speaker 2: just gave it to you. You don't know where they're
- 1:12:05Speaker 2: stealing from you. It's just too big it's too much.
- 1:12:10Speaker 2: There's too much money coming through, you know, and the banks.
- 1:12:13Speaker 2: We're switching up where we're dropping off the bank because
- 1:12:15Speaker 2: you don't want to get robbed, you know, because the
- 1:12:18Speaker 2: bankers that's making twenty five or fifteen dollars an hour.
- 1:12:22Speaker 1: Back then, they pillow talking.
- 1:12:25Speaker 2: Goddamn, I had to count three hundred thousand a day,
- 1:12:27Speaker 2: or I had to count one hundred and fifty thousand,
- 1:12:29Speaker 2: you know what I'm saying. So you got we had
- 1:12:31Speaker 2: the police following us to the bank on the big weekends.
- 1:12:35Speaker 2: The police would just sit there all night. I'd have
- 1:12:37Speaker 2: a rotat just so we wouldn't get robbed.
- 1:12:41Speaker 1: She was getting robbed internally, absolutely, how much date, How
- 1:12:46Speaker 1: do you think he was getting robed for?
- 1:12:47Speaker 2: I think they were taking ten percent of everything, and
- 1:12:51Speaker 2: that's a lot of money. That's thirty thousand a week,
- 1:12:53Speaker 2: you know, forty fifty thousand a week. Everybody was winning
- 1:12:57Speaker 2: and everybody was happy. How do you change that? Do
- 1:13:01Speaker 2: you decide to pay them more or it's just something.
- 1:13:04Speaker 2: Oh they're gonna pay. They don't matter how much. It
- 1:13:05Speaker 2: don't matter how much you give them. They said donna take,
- 1:13:08Speaker 2: They're gonna take. It's cash it's going somewhere. But that's
- 1:13:11Speaker 2: changed now.
- 1:13:12Speaker 3: Oh yeah, right, we don't gonna say it cash now,
- 1:13:15Speaker 3: talk about that game.
- 1:13:16Speaker 2: The credit card companies are still in there. Four percent
- 1:13:19Speaker 2: from you, you know what I'm saying. So if you
- 1:13:21Speaker 2: make for on your thousand, they taken sixteen thousand every week,
- 1:13:26Speaker 2: sixteen thirty.
- 1:13:27Speaker 1: Mine's always taken.
- 1:13:28Speaker 2: I'm saying sixteen four percent or ten percent. I'm gonna
- 1:13:33Speaker 2: take the four percent if you get to your poe.
- 1:13:35Speaker 2: So what they don't give it to your police? Oh yeah,
- 1:13:38Speaker 2: now I don't know about that, but you know.
- 1:13:40Speaker 1: And then even when the problem.
- 1:13:43Speaker 2: Was, if it wasn't rough weekend, you still gotta pay it.
- 1:13:48Speaker 2: Everybody's like, fuck, you pay me. They want you to win.
- 1:13:52Speaker 2: You've been winning, you know.
- 1:13:54Speaker 1: And it's just so many other distractions. We'll talk about this.
- 1:14:00Speaker 1: You said nobody spends money like black people all night life.
- 1:14:02Speaker 1: What about brunch? Oh my god, brunch. I've seen the
- 1:14:05Speaker 1: first hand you brunches power homecoming? That was crazy? How
- 1:14:10Speaker 1: a homecoming? What are you talking about? Every week? Super Bowl?
- 1:14:16Speaker 1: All this was super Bowl.
- 1:14:17Speaker 2: People are doing what on Super Bowl?
- 1:14:19Speaker 1: They're going to their friends' houses and everything.
- 1:14:22Speaker 2: The super Bowl party wasn't amazing, but the brunch was
- 1:14:25Speaker 2: seven hundred and eighty people.
- 1:14:30Speaker 1: Brunches. What's the science for the brunch? You got a
- 1:14:32Speaker 1: few hots. I didn't learn. I didn't learn anything, Yo,
- 1:14:37Speaker 1: Louliere about to get escorted out of head.
- 1:14:41Speaker 2: I didn't learn anything. I can tell them. I can
- 1:14:46Speaker 2: give them ABCD. Do you can think that Houston's Restaurant
- 1:14:52Speaker 2: hides anything that they do? You can see everything they
- 1:14:55Speaker 2: do right, every single thing they do. You can see.
- 1:15:00Speaker 1: No one can duplicate it. Why is it? No one
- 1:15:06Speaker 1: has a useless I mean, it's the same thing with
- 1:15:10Speaker 1: Michael Jordan. You know his workout, you see you can
- 1:15:12Speaker 1: see his workout, but you're still not gonna be Michael Jordan.
- 1:15:14Speaker 1: You're not gonna be Michael Jordan. So I can tell
- 1:15:16Speaker 1: you to what's that? What's the signs with the break
- 1:15:18Speaker 1: because we've been told like is to have a few
- 1:15:20Speaker 1: items like.
- 1:15:22Speaker 2: No, no, no, mm hmm. The key to everything is
- 1:15:29Speaker 2: the service, unreasonable hospitality. That's it.
- 1:15:37Speaker 1: Food gotta be good. Food costs you don't have to
- 1:15:40Speaker 1: how don't give a fuck about food cost? You don't
- 1:15:41Speaker 1: care about food cost.
- 1:15:42Speaker 2: I don't care about because your weekend it's all you
- 1:15:45Speaker 2: can eat. It's all.
- 1:15:46Speaker 1: You'll never eat more.
- 1:15:47Speaker 2: And you make exactly okay, And and if you do,
- 1:15:51Speaker 2: I'm happy to feed you. Okay. You give good mimosas.
- 1:15:57Speaker 2: You don't buy the worst cheap liquor. You buy good champagne.
- 1:16:02Speaker 2: You give them something or perseco or whatever it is.
- 1:16:06Speaker 2: You give them something that tastes amazing. If they want,
- 1:16:10Speaker 2: I'm using blueberry lemonade to make mimosas. They're loving it.
- 1:16:16Speaker 2: Everybody don't want orange juice. I'm using good orange juice.
- 1:16:22Speaker 2: Like people don't get give them great, they'll come back.
- 1:16:28Speaker 2: I need you to do what go tell your wife.
- 1:16:31Speaker 2: We got to go to brunch.
- 1:16:33Speaker 1: So that's it.
- 1:16:37Speaker 3: So about the food, the service, the ambiance, because one
- 1:16:41Speaker 3: of the things we talked about over here was the
- 1:16:43Speaker 3: excellence and the level of excellence. And even when we
- 1:16:45Speaker 3: went outside, people away. It's just a level of maturity professionalism.
- 1:16:49Speaker 2: That you see. And that's why talk about that. And
- 1:16:52Speaker 2: unfortunately that is why you have to kind of like
- 1:17:03Speaker 2: if you look at TikTok right now, there's a whole
- 1:17:06Speaker 2: bunch of stuff on there. Mark don't play. I'm not
- 1:17:10Speaker 2: gonna play. You're still in a dinner a restaurant. I
- 1:17:17Speaker 2: want you to dance, I want you to sing every song.
- 1:17:20Speaker 2: I don't want that. We're not talking on the tables, right.
- 1:17:25Speaker 1: I don't.
- 1:17:25Speaker 2: I don't. I don't want the turk and I don't
- 1:17:28Speaker 2: want the craziness. I want the true runch experience where
- 1:17:34Speaker 2: everybody in the room is singing.
- 1:17:36Speaker 7: But to me, DJs a is stupid because they should
- 1:17:42Speaker 7: own the crowd, viz, own the crowd. That's why i'm
- 1:17:52Speaker 7: these DJs. They don't practice, they don't go home.
- 1:17:55Speaker 2: And the biggest challenge here is I got all the
- 1:17:58Speaker 2: Allen Evison's you know what, they the greatest players in
- 1:18:03Speaker 2: the world. But guess what, they don't want to go
- 1:18:07Speaker 2: to practy. That's my man. Yeah, but when you.
- 1:18:14Speaker 1: Didn't know it all, they think they know it all.
- 1:18:17Speaker 2: They know it all. Yeah, they know it all. Three
- 1:18:21Speaker 2: of the greatest people that I ever had work for me.
- 1:18:24Speaker 2: I had to let go because I'm out. They think
- 1:18:29Speaker 2: it's for me. It's not for me.
- 1:18:32Speaker 1: But when you but so you're doing a brunch.
- 1:18:34Speaker 2: From what time or what from eleven to five?
- 1:18:37Speaker 1: From eleven to five, then the club opens up, then
- 1:18:40Speaker 1: you go to dinner here heah, from what time from
- 1:18:44Speaker 1: five to ten, from five to ten, yeah, and then
- 1:18:47Speaker 1: the club opens up from ten to three.
- 1:18:50Speaker 2: So but the real money makers he got a member,
- 1:18:53Speaker 2: ain't them?
- 1:18:54Speaker 1: What's the real money maker?
- 1:18:55Speaker 2: The real money makers are when the corporate people want
- 1:18:59Speaker 2: to come in here and they look at your vena
- 1:19:00Speaker 2: and they're like, Wow, this is clean, this is beautiful,
- 1:19:03Speaker 2: and then you give them the best party that they
- 1:19:05Speaker 2: have ever had. If you think I'm good as I
- 1:19:10Speaker 2: can give our people the greatest service. Oh my god,
- 1:19:15Speaker 2: what I can do for this corporate people. I feel
- 1:19:19Speaker 2: like we.
- 1:19:19Speaker 3: Teamed one day and it was like Delaware rented out
- 1:19:23Speaker 3: the space. I was like what they were like, Yeah,
- 1:19:25Speaker 3: all the representatives they took over those space.
- 1:19:27Speaker 1: No, no, no, what's the revenue look like for the corporates? Huh?
- 1:19:32Speaker 2: I got three this month coming out, each one of
- 1:19:35Speaker 2: them paying anywhere from one hundred and twenty to one
- 1:19:38Speaker 2: hundred and ninety thousand for.
- 1:19:40Speaker 1: Tonight to night. And those are the easiest thing in
- 1:19:42Speaker 1: the world.
- 1:19:43Speaker 2: Three four hours, all the food, all the drink, no
- 1:19:49Speaker 2: problems at all. How are the margins? So because they
- 1:19:52Speaker 2: somebody was those margins, Yeah, are crazy?
- 1:19:57Speaker 1: All the typical because it's not a lot of people.
- 1:20:01Speaker 2: There are a lot of people towards it. Crazy Margins
- 1:20:04Speaker 2: because you don't have no security, you don't have no problems.
- 1:20:07Speaker 2: They don't tear the place up. It's corporate.
- 1:20:11Speaker 3: Typical night Margins is dinner because the death restaurant spaces.
- 1:20:15Speaker 3: I mean those sometimes on a Thursday night.
- 1:20:18Speaker 2: Yeah, if I make twenty thousand, i'm breaking eating even
- 1:20:23Speaker 2: maybe loser. Friday night, I'm doing seventy five to one hundred.
- 1:20:30Speaker 2: After sixty I'm making money. Okay, Saturday, I'm trying to
- 1:20:39Speaker 2: do one to one seventy five. I'm not worried about
- 1:20:44Speaker 2: no food costs. Honestly. I tell my people my crab suits.
- 1:20:50Speaker 2: People get tired of eating the crab in my craft suit.
- 1:20:53Speaker 1: So much crabs.
- 1:20:54Speaker 2: There's so much crabs.
- 1:20:56Speaker 8: It's I wanted to be just like that. I want
- 1:20:59Speaker 8: you to go tell people you gotta have this fucking
- 1:21:01Speaker 8: craft soup. There used to be a place here. It
- 1:21:05Speaker 8: was down in Southwest.
- 1:21:07Speaker 2: They had the best sheet craft soup I've ever had
- 1:21:10Speaker 2: in my life. You couldn't eat it but two days,
- 1:21:14Speaker 2: maybe once a week because it was too rich, it
- 1:21:17Speaker 2: was too good. You know what I'm saying. When you talking, Oh,
- 1:21:21Speaker 2: I did forget. I tried to go back, and I
- 1:21:23Speaker 2: forgot again. The key to everything is my food. Other
- 1:21:29Speaker 2: places aren't starting until what CLOBs don't hot. You won't
- 1:21:35Speaker 2: get the club until there's somebody in there. Right eleven
- 1:21:38Speaker 2: twelve one in New York. You know what I'm saying.
- 1:21:42Speaker 2: So you're messing out.
- 1:21:44Speaker 1: I'm catching you at five o'clock cause they're coming to eat.
- 1:21:47Speaker 2: They coming to eat, and they don't leave, and my
- 1:21:50Speaker 2: brunch is about to become My dinner is about to
- 1:21:53Speaker 2: come to the same thing as my brunch. That's what
- 1:21:55Speaker 2: I walked.
- 1:21:56Speaker 3: Is there a timetable on the bruch, like you can't
- 1:21:58Speaker 3: be here an hour and a half.
- 1:22:00Speaker 2: That's what you think? Two hours was too much? They
- 1:22:02Speaker 2: would twisted.
- 1:22:02Speaker 1: So a lot, a lot of a lot of restaurant
- 1:22:04Speaker 1: tours say that I will let you.
- 1:22:07Speaker 2: Stay for two hours sometimes if your tables, but when
- 1:22:11Speaker 2: we sold them, we're doing eight nine hundred thousand. I
- 1:22:14Speaker 2: gotta I gotta keep doing, and it's hard. It's the
- 1:22:17Speaker 2: hardest thing is to get it. They'll say we'll pay double,
- 1:22:20Speaker 2: we'll got balls, and I'll be like, you lit over.
- 1:22:25Speaker 2: I'm just over serving me now.
- 1:22:28Speaker 1: So what you make that known when they come in, like, look,
- 1:22:31Speaker 1: you go only stay down there.
- 1:22:32Speaker 2: It's a contract.
- 1:22:33Speaker 1: When a lot of restaurant tours that I know don't
- 1:22:38Speaker 1: like night life, they shy away from that. They're like, look,
- 1:22:41Speaker 1: it's only problems. Is trouble, people get stabbed shot. They
- 1:22:44Speaker 1: don't because a lot of restaurants go tonight life when
- 1:22:47Speaker 1: their restaurants starts struggling. But a lot of restaurant tos
- 1:22:50Speaker 1: I they were like, I just want to keep it clean.
- 1:22:52Speaker 1: It's over at midnight eleven o'clock. Like I don't want
- 1:22:55Speaker 1: to go into night life. You do both. You do
- 1:22:57Speaker 1: restaurants at night life.
- 1:22:59Speaker 2: I do and in that.
- 1:23:02Speaker 1: So and so, what's your thoughts on that philosophy that
- 1:23:05Speaker 1: night life is too much trouble.
- 1:23:09Speaker 2: I think it's all going to end once we get
- 1:23:12Speaker 2: the facial recognition for everybody else.
- 1:23:16Speaker 1: They had that in London. Yeah, because in London we
- 1:23:19Speaker 1: went to you know, you gotta turn your hat around
- 1:23:22Speaker 1: to go on to the or turn it around taking
- 1:23:24Speaker 1: it off as understandable because it's like you don't want
- 1:23:26Speaker 1: hats and the establishment. But it's like why would you
- 1:23:28Speaker 1: wake it? Why wear it to the back. They didn't
- 1:23:30Speaker 1: realize that they had the facial record so they can
- 1:23:32Speaker 1: scan your face. So we want to go to membership,
- 1:23:35Speaker 1: but right now you're not that membership. So you've been
- 1:23:38Speaker 1: in thirty years, You've seen everything? Is it? How have
- 1:23:42Speaker 1: you been able to snowy novel.
- 1:23:43Speaker 2: That I would have made it without brunch? There's nothing
- 1:23:49Speaker 2: like brunch. Nothing. The formula that I've gotten for brunch
- 1:23:57Speaker 2: is everything to me. And the key to that is service.
- 1:24:02Speaker 1: But how are you able not to have major problems
- 1:24:05Speaker 1: at night? Shooting stabbings like that's a lot of let's
- 1:24:09Speaker 1: knock on woods because it can happen anywhere. Demographic are you?
- 1:24:18Speaker 2: Is it?
- 1:24:19Speaker 1: Dress code? Is the music? Because somebody somebody, somebody's everyone's
- 1:24:22Speaker 1: every we interview, we interview, you know Jimmy from the
- 1:24:24Speaker 1: Bronx Jimmy Cafe. Yeah, so he said something that was interested.
- 1:24:28Speaker 1: He said, I said, how do you control type of
- 1:24:32Speaker 1: energy that's in the club. It used to be a
- 1:24:33Speaker 1: dress code, as the old dress codes anymore? He said,
- 1:24:35Speaker 1: it's the music. He said, you play a certain music,
- 1:24:38Speaker 1: you're going to attract a certain demographics. If you purposely
- 1:24:41Speaker 1: play a different type of music, or even if you
- 1:24:43Speaker 1: see it's some level of friction. You tell it, DJ
- 1:24:45Speaker 1: Switch the music like his thing was the music dictates
- 1:24:50Speaker 1: the energy.
- 1:24:54Speaker 2: I think it does. But I think you have to
- 1:24:57Speaker 2: go for a clientele. And I think in the next year,
- 1:25:05Speaker 2: well I know in the next six months, I'm going
- 1:25:08Speaker 2: to membership.
- 1:25:09Speaker 1: For this, hope, for this, for everything. What was that?
- 1:25:12Speaker 1: What does that look like? What does the membership model
- 1:25:15Speaker 1: look like? For part?
- 1:25:18Speaker 2: Okay? So right in there we do Let's say we
- 1:25:20Speaker 2: do five thousand people a week. Yeah, five percent of
- 1:25:23Speaker 2: those people are a's or what a's.
- 1:25:27Speaker 1: As like highest quality? Okay, that means you spin a client,
- 1:25:32Speaker 1: a client and a.
- 1:25:33Speaker 2: Client, twenty percent of these, sixty percent of c's, fourteen
- 1:25:40Speaker 2: percent of these, and one percent is if you don't
- 1:25:45Speaker 2: one f can just screw up the whole building. Just
- 1:25:47Speaker 2: enough with he just another he got a problem, fucking up,
- 1:25:51Speaker 2: he fuck it up. If I just take the a's
- 1:25:56Speaker 2: in the BS every week, that's twenty five percent. Twenty
- 1:26:02Speaker 2: five percent of five is twelve hundred and fifty people.
- 1:26:07Speaker 2: If I went and offered those people and then tell
- 1:26:11Speaker 2: me this, where's your favorite place.
- 1:26:12Speaker 1: To go to? My favorite place? Restaurant, cloud anywhere in America? Yeah,
- 1:26:19Speaker 1: the part okay, but if you lived here, like what's
- 1:26:24Speaker 1: convenience soulhouses convenient something like that.
- 1:26:26Speaker 2: That's my But listen to this. If they said you
- 1:26:29Speaker 2: don't go to soho house because you also get a
- 1:26:31Speaker 2: bill from them every month, you gotta spend some my
- 1:26:33Speaker 2: at you other you do this other that. But if
- 1:26:36Speaker 2: you said you could get a membership for one hundred
- 1:26:41Speaker 2: dollars a month and you could get up to three
- 1:26:46Speaker 2: drinks every day for free with that one hundred dollars
- 1:26:51Speaker 2: a month membership, how quick would you buy that membership?
- 1:26:55Speaker 1: But that's what's going to include three anytime you come,
- 1:26:58Speaker 1: buy anytime you come, and you get three. So if
- 1:27:00Speaker 1: I get is is that even profitable?
- 1:27:04Speaker 2: Let me tell you how profitable it is. If you
- 1:27:09Speaker 2: say you can get three drinks and these are all
- 1:27:13Speaker 2: members now, member, you want to be here?
- 1:27:14Speaker 1: Worth now?
- 1:27:15Speaker 2: Because it's what all a's and d's high Clarentel high
- 1:27:19Speaker 2: in clientel.
- 1:27:20Speaker 1: Okay.
- 1:27:23Speaker 2: So if I go twenty weeks at twelve hundred and
- 1:27:26Speaker 2: fifty people a week all a's and b's, that's twenty
- 1:27:29Speaker 2: five thousand people. That means at the beginning of a month,
- 1:27:35Speaker 2: if they all pay me one hundred dollars a month,
- 1:27:37Speaker 2: I taken two point five million. That's six million dollars,
- 1:27:45Speaker 2: I mean, six hundred thousand a week before I sell
- 1:27:51Speaker 2: any bottle service or food.
- 1:27:54Speaker 1: But that's the right I say that they're different people.
- 1:27:57Speaker 1: It might be the same people every week though too.
- 1:27:59Speaker 2: That's twenty five thousand people that I'm going to give
- 1:28:03Speaker 2: a membership too. That can also for a price, bring
- 1:28:10Speaker 2: a friend along with them, but they're gonna have to
- 1:28:13Speaker 2: get a membership or different teer membership. I want them
- 1:28:17Speaker 2: to get a membership, and they are going to be
- 1:28:18Speaker 2: different tier membership. But again, the average restaurant isn't taking
- 1:28:24Speaker 2: in two point four million dollars a month. Neither I
- 1:28:31Speaker 2: Right now, I'm taking in one point five to one
- 1:28:36Speaker 2: point eight a month, twenty million a year.
- 1:28:39Speaker 1: Okay, So.
- 1:28:43Speaker 2: If I can now go to two point five six
- 1:28:46Speaker 2: hundred thousand dollars, and that's with all the brunch and
- 1:28:51Speaker 2: all the bottle service tables right now. But if I
- 1:28:54Speaker 2: knew I had that money coming in at the beginning
- 1:28:55Speaker 2: of the month, I can hire even more customer service.
- 1:29:00Speaker 2: It's people and it's what only what I want, and
- 1:29:08Speaker 2: it's all facial recognition. Then you put the Netflix model
- 1:29:14Speaker 2: in on it, and you say I'm going to go
- 1:29:18Speaker 2: buy up four little spots, so you not stopped just
- 1:29:20Speaker 2: coming the park, and for twenty five dollars more a month.
- 1:29:26Speaker 2: So I'm now getting two hundred dollars a month. You
- 1:29:30Speaker 2: can go to all four of the spots. So now
- 1:29:33Speaker 2: I'm taking in five million, sixteen million dollars a year
- 1:29:38Speaker 2: before I sell one drink, a piece of food, all brush,
- 1:29:43Speaker 2: all bottle service table. No, that's the Marbel. And I
- 1:29:48Speaker 2: can tell everybody about it, and they won't do it
- 1:29:52Speaker 2: because everybody shows people what they do and people just
- 1:29:56Speaker 2: can't do it. For fact, that is a fact people
- 1:30:02Speaker 2: can't do.
- 1:30:03Speaker 9: You can tell people exactly what you're doing, they can't
- 1:30:06Speaker 9: do what you do. Sure now there'll be somebody to
- 1:30:13Speaker 9: come close to it, and it may be somebody who
- 1:30:15Speaker 9: does do it better.
- 1:30:17Speaker 2: But I've told hundreds of people this Mordel, and nobody
- 1:30:21Speaker 2: does it. Nobody does what I do. The key is, though,
- 1:30:27Speaker 2: you can't be greedy either. It's like destroying a country
- 1:30:32Speaker 2: when the top. If I have all the money and
- 1:30:34Speaker 2: I'm up here and all my people down there, it
- 1:30:38Speaker 2: ain't right. I'm bringing all my people along with me.
- 1:30:42Speaker 2: Let's go y'all.
- 1:30:43Speaker 1: Have you seen a decrease in revenue from people not
- 1:30:45Speaker 1: drinking alcohol as much as not used to be? You know,
- 1:30:48Speaker 1: grew thirteen percent because you know about that stat I do,
- 1:30:51Speaker 1: and the.
- 1:30:51Speaker 2: Twenty two billion dollars worth of liquor that's sitting in reserve.
- 1:30:55Speaker 1: But it's not affecting you.
- 1:30:57Speaker 2: I grew thirty.
- 1:30:58Speaker 1: Yet you have an older audience to no, I don't.
- 1:31:01Speaker 1: You don't have old audience that can I tell you
- 1:31:04Speaker 1: what the real.
- 1:31:04Speaker 2: Problem is out here? What Don Julio Repo? They are
- 1:31:08Speaker 2: selling a lot of that. You know.
- 1:31:11Speaker 10: I go through sixty to one hundred cases a week. Tequila, tequila, tequila.
- 1:31:19Speaker 10: I ain't never seen nothing like Don Julio Repo.
- 1:31:21Speaker 2: Though I saw the Rock days, the Great Goose Days,
- 1:31:28Speaker 2: the Hennessy Day on what shot?
- 1:31:30Speaker 1: I don't seen everything. They all want shots.
- 1:31:34Speaker 3: There's nothing, yeah like Don Julio Repo. There's one thing
- 1:31:38Speaker 3: that a sex shot. It affects everybody. He talked about
- 1:31:41Speaker 3: it before we started whether most people don't think about that, and.
- 1:31:46Speaker 2: So can I tell you? This is the first year
- 1:31:49Speaker 2: in the last five years I've worried, Oh I had
- 1:31:54Speaker 2: weather really affects me? I try to tell people. People say, oh,
- 1:31:58Speaker 2: I want to owe my own. See, the biggest challenge
- 1:32:00Speaker 2: that people have is I want to own my own.
- 1:32:05Speaker 2: Before you say you want to own your own, come
- 1:32:08Speaker 2: in here and learn everything I do. Learn what the
- 1:32:11Speaker 2: insurance is, Learn what the challenges are of things, learn
- 1:32:15Speaker 2: about every do everything at a job. I wish that's
- 1:32:19Speaker 2: the only thing. I jumped in it. And I didn't
- 1:32:21Speaker 2: know the finance side. I didn't know everything about the money.
- 1:32:28Speaker 1: Never got a line of credit.
- 1:32:32Speaker 2: Never. But the whole thing is is that you gotta
- 1:32:36Speaker 2: hire good people and you gotta now no matter how
- 1:32:41Speaker 2: you try. But I try to tell people you got
- 1:32:46Speaker 2: to live the way you want your people to be.
- 1:32:49Speaker 2: A dream. We had three hundred employees and okay, so
- 1:32:52Speaker 2: now we got the guy, I got boot y'all, I
- 1:32:54Speaker 2: got TVs, I got you know, three hundred employees. Everybody
- 1:32:58Speaker 2: got something. I'm not letting you sell nothing stolen. I'm
- 1:33:03Speaker 2: not buying nothing stolen. I'm not aching nothing. When the
- 1:33:07Speaker 2: liquor people come and they say, you know, I got
- 1:33:09Speaker 2: one of these they fell off the truck, I said,
- 1:33:11Speaker 2: you want me call them and telling them they fell
- 1:33:12Speaker 2: off your truck, because next week you're trying to steal
- 1:33:17Speaker 2: my looking walk the cases in and accidentally walk the
- 1:33:21Speaker 2: case out.
- 1:33:22Speaker 1: Oh I thought I over gave.
- 1:33:24Speaker 2: It to you. You know this, that and the other.
- 1:33:27Speaker 2: But I don't think people understand what it takes to
- 1:33:35Speaker 2: make it work. I can't duplicate myself. I really wish
- 1:33:39Speaker 2: I could, because then I'd have five of these and
- 1:33:42Speaker 2: be sitting on the beach. There are challenges, you know,
- 1:33:46Speaker 2: keeping yourself relevant no matter what. It's hard, no matter
- 1:33:52Speaker 2: what you're doing podcast today in a minute, if you
- 1:33:56Speaker 2: don't have the right guess, the right people, the right thing.
- 1:33:59Speaker 2: You got to keep what's excited, what makes it good?
- 1:34:03Speaker 2: Who's really given the right information. That's what it's about.
- 1:34:09Speaker 2: What makes this work? You know, it's like what makes
- 1:34:12Speaker 2: this country work? I think where everybody else thinks the
- 1:34:18Speaker 2: AI is going to take these jobs. It's gonna take
- 1:34:21Speaker 2: these jobs, but it's gonna teach He's kids in them
- 1:34:24Speaker 2: in When I tell you you're going to be able
- 1:34:26Speaker 2: to have an iPad that figures out, you know, just
- 1:34:30Speaker 2: like you talked to Groncle, you talk to one of
- 1:34:32Speaker 2: these other things. Now they got different voices that they're
- 1:34:34Speaker 2: gonna find a voice that you want to talk to
- 1:34:38Speaker 2: something that you want to hear, just like they understand
- 1:34:41Speaker 2: your algorithms. And you know, the kids that want to
- 1:34:43Speaker 2: watch fights, they send them fights. What does that World Star?
- 1:34:47Speaker 1: Right? The kids?
- 1:34:48Speaker 2: Everything that comes up on my algorithm is AI everything,
- 1:34:53Speaker 2: every AI commercial, Dad everything I want because that's what
- 1:34:57Speaker 2: I'm watching. I'm believing that it's listening to me and
- 1:35:02Speaker 2: knows what I want. I don't even I've never seen
- 1:35:05Speaker 2: except on other people's phones. This Wolf Star stuff, I'm
- 1:35:09Speaker 2: not watching that.
- 1:35:11Speaker 1: Before we before we let you talk about working with
- 1:35:13Speaker 1: your your Your son works with yourret he does.
- 1:35:16Speaker 2: None of my my daughter was on bar Rescue. My
- 1:35:20Speaker 2: son works with me.
- 1:35:21Speaker 1: How's that?
- 1:35:23Speaker 2: It's challenging. I want him to do more. But you
- 1:35:28Speaker 2: got to remember growing up in a house. And the
- 1:35:37Speaker 2: thing is is that at one point you're Mark's son.
- 1:35:41Speaker 2: Then at one point it became your Chase is dad.
- 1:35:47Speaker 2: But he's taking the back seat. He wanted to go
- 1:35:51Speaker 2: I got, you know, make his own path and everything,
- 1:35:53Speaker 2: and he's doing what he does. Work with me still
- 1:35:56Speaker 2: helps out. I wish it was more, but you know,
- 1:36:00Speaker 2: you go through that. You know, parents and kids and everything.
- 1:36:03Speaker 2: None of my daughter, my daughters both work in the
- 1:36:05Speaker 2: same business. One works in Chicago and one works in
- 1:36:08Speaker 2: New York. And my other daughter is marketing and she's
- 1:36:11Speaker 2: out of Toronto. So but you know, it's it is challenging,
- 1:36:18Speaker 2: you know. I'm not easy to work with anyway, as
- 1:36:22Speaker 2: animated as animated as I am here. And my biggest
- 1:36:28Speaker 2: problem is I want a joke and play, but I
- 1:36:33Speaker 2: want work and I'm these nuts. I got cards that
- 1:36:38Speaker 2: say these nuts literally, and we play a game. Everybody
- 1:36:43Speaker 2: gets a card at the beginning of the night and
- 1:36:46Speaker 2: if I make you say who, then you got to
- 1:36:48Speaker 2: get into your card the person that ends up with
- 1:36:50Speaker 2: the most cars, just to try to break the ice
- 1:36:54Speaker 2: on some of the things we do, you know. And
- 1:37:00Speaker 2: Ark is a Staples, so we do try to attract everything.
- 1:37:07Speaker 2: So it's hard. I think it's going to grow even bigger.
- 1:37:13Speaker 2: I think I think AI is going to change the
- 1:37:16Speaker 2: world like people can't believe, and I think people don't understand.
- 1:37:21Speaker 1: We agree well appreciation some My brother tell the people
- 1:37:25Speaker 1: what to follow and uh, yeah, when you're gonna roll
- 1:37:27Speaker 1: out the are you gonna roll out the membership?
- 1:37:30Speaker 2: This chambership first, we got the park games coming, Yeah,
- 1:37:35Speaker 2: what is that? In the next two or three weeks.
- 1:37:38Speaker 1: What is that? What is that?
- 1:37:39Speaker 2: So you know you've heard the Beast Games. Yeah, and
- 1:37:43Speaker 2: we want to put competitions out there. We think it's
- 1:37:46Speaker 2: going to be a big thing for the right now,
- 1:37:50Speaker 2: we're doing a seventy twenty thousand for second place, fifty
- 1:37:53Speaker 2: thousand for first. We have to invite you and then
- 1:37:56Speaker 2: then you got to be invited. The app guy that
- 1:37:59Speaker 2: I got this making this other this guy is amazing.
- 1:38:03Speaker 2: He also made the membership app. But then, you know,
- 1:38:08Speaker 2: we want to move these prisites up to like Beast
- 1:38:11Speaker 2: Gains one hundred two hundred, you know, and we want
- 1:38:16Speaker 2: to make it a competition like nothing anybody's ever seen.
- 1:38:19Speaker 2: The guy who did Beast Gains is I'm sleep one
- 1:38:23Speaker 2: night and I just roll over and I'm watching and
- 1:38:26Speaker 2: somehow and it's on my TV, and I'm like, what the.
- 1:38:29Speaker 1: Hell is this stuff?
- 1:38:30Speaker 2: You know, but have you seen that first the first
- 1:38:34Speaker 2: two episodes of season one.
- 1:38:35Speaker 1: Or just seen clips?
- 1:38:37Speaker 2: You got to watch it. There's nothing like that. It's
- 1:38:43Speaker 2: just amazing to watch those first two episodes. I'm telling
- 1:38:48Speaker 2: you should watch them. And I know that's pushing somebody
- 1:38:51Speaker 2: else up, but that it is. It's competition. He was
- 1:38:56Speaker 2: smart with it, but he lost twenty million I think
- 1:38:59Speaker 2: on the first one. But now he's on the third one.
- 1:39:02Speaker 2: And again like Coachella, I think they were losing ten, fifteen,
- 1:39:07Speaker 2: twenty million when they first started out. I hope they're
- 1:39:10Speaker 2: making money now. I don't know what their real numbers are,
- 1:39:12Speaker 2: but I would imagine that they are.
- 1:39:14Speaker 1: It's like Fanatic vests.
- 1:39:16Speaker 2: Also they sir, yep, but I don't know much about
- 1:39:19Speaker 2: Fanatics tests. Well, it didn't make any money, no, it
- 1:39:23Speaker 2: lose admittedly, say he's lost seventeen million last year. Oh okay,
- 1:39:28Speaker 2: but I mean.
- 1:39:30Speaker 1: Tell me to call me. I got to wait for
- 1:39:32Speaker 1: him to make money.
- 1:39:35Speaker 2: When I tell you, the key to everything is that
- 1:39:41Speaker 2: penny equation.
- 1:39:44Speaker 11: When people leave your thing, what you do? They gotta
- 1:39:51Speaker 11: go tell two people and it moves so quick like that.
- 1:39:58Speaker 2: When we get off camera, I got other one.
- 1:40:00Speaker 1: But yeah, thank man, all right, my brother, Well it's
- 1:40:04Speaker 1: been a pleasure man, thanking for the hospitality. Peters greatly
- 1:40:07Speaker 1: appreciated my brother.
- 1:40:09Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 1:40:10Speaker 1: It's a rat
