- 0:18Speaker 1: Hey everybody, welcome to episode six.
- 0:20Speaker 1: Zach has left us, and now you are left with just the two of us.
- 0:24Speaker 2: Sad puppy.
- 0:25Speaker 1: I know, but it was having.
- 0:26Speaker 1: It was fun having him on.
- 0:28Speaker 2: Don't worry, he'll be back as long as you guys write into him.
- 0:32Speaker 1: Absolutely so, Rob.
- 0:33Speaker 1: What have we decided to talk about today?
- 0:36Speaker 1: And I'm not asking you that because I forgot, I'm just setting you up.
- 0:40Speaker 2: Sure sure sure, this is what happens when he goes away for a week and we miss an episode.
- 0:47Speaker 1: I mean, I can't blame it entirely on Oakley, but I've learned that small children don't do well all the time.
- 0:54Speaker 1: They're not perfect always.
- 0:55Speaker 1: This is what I've learned over the past couple weeks.
- 0:58Speaker 1: They can get fussy.
- 1:00Speaker 2: They're not perfect.
- 1:01Speaker 2: We're not perfect.
- 1:02Speaker 2: Hey, it's a not perfect world, but we're going to go ahead and talk about the assortment of diets that you can possibly do that you always see on the internet.
- 1:14Speaker 1: Oh, I'm just going to take this opportunity to just fully dive in on how much I hate specific diets.
- 1:21Speaker 1: That's pretty much what I feel like I'm going to use this episode for.
- 1:24Speaker 2: Yeah, pretty much.
- 1:26Speaker 1: So I mean, what diet?
- 1:27Speaker 1: Should we start off talking?
- 1:29Speaker 1: Should we start off talking with the big one?
- 1:30Speaker 1: Should we start with the big one, or should we leave?
- 1:32Speaker 1: That one for later.
- 1:34Speaker 2: Maybe we'll leave that one for later.
- 1:36Speaker 2: Maybe we should start off with, because everyone's tuning in for the big diet Great.
- 1:43Speaker 1: We're all thinking of right now, so maybe we should leave it for later, so that people continue listening.
- 1:48Speaker 2: You guys have to keep listening, sorry.
- 1:50Speaker 1: Yeah, sorry, you have to listen.
- 1:51Speaker 1: You have to hear about that diet a little bit later.
- 1:54Speaker 1: So, boy, what diet to start off with?
- 1:57Speaker 1: I mean that's a tough question.
- 1:58Speaker 2: Before we get into any diet, I think it's important to note that every diet is a form of calorie restriction.
- 2:07Speaker 1: Right, that's that.
- 2:08Speaker 1: I guess we should say that the point of it is to get you into a calorie deficit so you lose weight.
- 2:14Speaker 1: Now there are the various different ways that you can do that, but they all have that end goal.
- 2:20Speaker 2: Yeah, okay.
- 2:22Speaker 1: So I guess, to like, do we have to like, do we have to do like a Webster's dictionary?
- 2:25Speaker 1: Define a diet.
- 2:26Speaker 1: What is a diet?
- 2:27Speaker 1: A diet is a way of eating in a specific way that is different from your usual.
- 2:34Speaker 1: I have no idea Like.
- 2:37Speaker 1: Look up, rob quickly, google, okay, webster's dictionary.
- 2:39Speaker 2: What is a diet?
- 2:41Speaker 2: Let's Google it quickly.
- 2:43Speaker 1: Just go into Google right now, put it into just type diet.
- 2:45Speaker 1: So you're going to get like 8,000 different diets and all the different things that you can do.
- 2:50Speaker 1: Well, just pure definition.
- 2:52Speaker 1: Okay, what is Webster's dictionary?
- 2:54Speaker 2: So I got the wrong definition of diet here, because the thing is, with diet, there is two definitions to it.
- 3:02Speaker 2: Right, there's diet as it relates to our food that we consume in total.
- 3:08Speaker 2: Just the daily food we eat is our diet.
- 3:10Speaker 2: Okay, but then when you go, on a diet.
- 3:13Speaker 1: I'm on a diet.
- 3:14Speaker 1: Yeah, I guess that's true.
- 3:16Speaker 1: Like you know your way of eating, I guess is your diet.
- 3:20Speaker 1: But, what's the?
- 3:21Speaker 1: I guess?
- 3:22Speaker 1: So I guess, is there really a definition of a diet that you go on to go into a calorie deficit?
- 3:29Speaker 1: Maybe not, I don't know.
- 3:32Speaker 2: Okay, yeah, okay.
- 3:35Speaker 1: It just says sadness.
- 3:37Speaker 2: Yeah, it just says sadness, but this, of course, a food, to which one was true Riveting stuff.
- 3:46Speaker 1: We just have to do this.
- 3:47Speaker 1: Take half the episode to define what a fucking diet is.
- 3:50Speaker 1: Just a divine diet, right.
- 3:51Speaker 2: Yeah, okay, okay, so, okay.
- 3:56Speaker 2: So here we go.
- 3:56Speaker 2: Definitions from Oxford, from Oxford.
- 3:59Speaker 2: From one the kinds of food that a person, animal or community habitually eats.
- 4:05Speaker 1: Right, not shocking.
- 4:07Speaker 2: To a special course of food to which one restricts oneself, either to lose weight or for medical reasons.
- 4:14Speaker 1: Okay, that's good.
- 4:16Speaker 1: Okay, a special wait, a special course of weight.
- 4:20Speaker 1: I already lost it, but you get the point.
- 4:24Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 4:25Speaker 1: Okay, Rob, which diet should we start off with first?
- 4:29Speaker 2: Well, you know, I think we should start with one that's the most researched diet ever, and that is the Mediterranean diet.
- 4:39Speaker 1: Mediterranean diet.
- 4:41Speaker 2: And I would absolutely love to get Dr Terry Simpson to come in here and talk even more on that in the future.
- 4:47Speaker 2: But we'll at least give a little quick overview of it here.
- 4:51Speaker 1: Yeah, I just want to give like a quick touch on like what it is right, that sort of thing.
- 4:56Speaker 1: Yeah, and for my understanding, the Mediterranean diet isn't so much like because I know Dr Terry Simpson always says like it's not exactly what they eat in the Mediterranean region.
- 5:07Speaker 1: It's what has been studied and you know, kind of defined as the Mediterranean diet, which is a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, legumes, whole grains, fatty fish and, you know, some lean meats, basically, and keeping red meat to, you know, limited in moderation.
- 5:25Speaker 2: Yeah, one of the big things is, you see, some of the especially some of the carnivore crowd say that these people celebrate red meat.
- 5:35Speaker 2: They use red meat for festivals and stuff like that, and so they make the assumption that it's one of the primary foods that they eat.
- 5:43Speaker 2: But it's.
- 5:45Speaker 2: It's something that's used for exactly that for celebration or things, so it's not common.
- 5:52Speaker 1: Right, we celebrate with a big roast turkey.
- 5:54Speaker 1: We thank giving.
- 5:55Speaker 1: You don't see us eating fucking roast turkey every day.
- 5:59Speaker 2: That is an amazing example right there.
- 6:01Speaker 1: Right, Like it's you get in once in a while.
- 6:03Speaker 1: So in the Mediterranean region a lot of it is, yeah, like fruits and vegetables, nuts, seeds, like all that sort of stuff and it's, you know, it's really been shown like that.
- 6:10Speaker 1: We you know like it comes to, like actually studying diets.
- 6:13Speaker 1: It's one of the few diets that it's actually being shown time and time again to reduce your risk for cardiovascular disease, reduce your risk for diet, type two diabetes, all sorts of diseases.
- 6:24Speaker 2: So reduce your risk of dying.
- 6:25Speaker 1: Basically.
- 6:26Speaker 1: Yeah, you know it really, it really has, and so that's why you know, I think you know we hear about it so much and you know, like what's what's?
- 6:34Speaker 1: The other one, olive oil is a big one, you know whenever.
- 6:37Speaker 1: I think, when everybody hears Mediterranean diet, the first thing they think of is olive oil.
- 6:41Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 6:42Speaker 1: Because when I've looked at it, it's like half of their fats or something comes from olive oil or something like crazy number, Like it's really high.
- 6:50Speaker 1: You know, and I love olive oil, it's great.
- 6:54Speaker 1: You know people freak out like, oh, use olive oil instead of seed oils, all that stuff.
- 6:58Speaker 1: I'm sure we've, you know, people listening for it, all that sort of stuff.
- 7:00Speaker 1: But you know, olive oil is great.
- 7:02Speaker 1: You can even cook with it.
- 7:03Speaker 1: A lot of people think you can't saute with it.
- 7:05Speaker 1: You absolutely can.
- 7:06Speaker 1: It's awesome.
- 7:08Speaker 1: It's just, you know, very calorie dense, just like any oil.
- 7:12Speaker 1: So it's just something to keep in mind really.
- 7:14Speaker 2: And so how this applies.
- 7:15Speaker 2: That calorie restriction is by restricting you to foods that are very satiating.
- 7:21Speaker 2: They're very low processed, they're going to keep you full, and so you're going to be eating less overall.
- 7:29Speaker 1: Yeah, the one thing I've heard that really stuck with me is all diets kind of boil down to getting you to eat either more fiber or more protein, or both, because those two things are very satiating.
- 7:46Speaker 2: Very satiating.
- 7:47Speaker 1: Right, so in the Mediterranean diet it's generally more fiber they don't eat.
- 7:50Speaker 1: I can't remember the numbers, but how much protein they eat they generally don't have a super high protein intake.
- 7:55Speaker 2: They don't eat much meat, and most of the meat they eat is going to be in the form of fish.
- 8:00Speaker 1: Right, fish.
- 8:01Speaker 1: And then you have legumes, which have, you know, some protein, but not a lot, but a lot more fiber, because like legumes, nuts, seeds, vegetables, fruits, all that has a ton of fiber.
- 8:08Speaker 1: Like the average American gets 15 grams of fiber in a day.
- 8:10Speaker 1: That is quite low for men.
- 8:12Speaker 1: They generally recommend like 35 to 45 somewhere.
- 8:15Speaker 1: I think they say 15, you know, for every thousand calories you eat, what is it?
- 8:19Speaker 1: 15 grams of fiber, I should say so if you eat 2000 calories, 30 grams of fiber somewhere around.
- 8:27Speaker 1: There is a good general rule I eat like 100 grams of fiber a day.
- 8:31Speaker 2: I was about to say this, coming from the fiber king here.
- 8:33Speaker 1: I like 80 to 100.
- 8:35Speaker 1: It's pretty insane, but I've adapted to that slowly over time.
- 8:39Speaker 1: Do not do that overnight, god no.
- 8:41Speaker 2: But yeah, in the.
- 8:41Speaker 1: Mediterranean region lots of fiber, keeps you super full, keeps you satiated and generally will lose weight doing it.
- 8:48Speaker 1: Often it will lead to weight loss if you're coming from more of a kind of typical American diet.
- 8:54Speaker 2: Well, Liam, what diet should we cover next?
- 8:56Speaker 1: I want to pick, I want to pick, I want to pick.
- 8:58Speaker 1: Well, quickly, I just want to say like, because there's the dash diet, which is the kind of the American kind of cousin to the Mediterranean diet, is very similar.
- 9:06Speaker 1: So I just want to say that one.
- 9:07Speaker 1: The whole idea was to stop hypertension and diabetes.
- 9:11Speaker 1: You know again, very similar, very similar foods, but just small differences.
- 9:15Speaker 1: It also works.
- 9:16Speaker 1: But I want to go to next, because I get asked about it so much, is intermittent fasting.
- 9:24Speaker 1: I get that.
- 9:25Speaker 1: It's just so often I get asked about it.
- 9:28Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a very common one.
- 9:29Speaker 1: My goodness, and like I, just I just why, why, why did it like take off so as much as it did?
- 9:37Speaker 1: I?
- 9:39Speaker 2: don't know.
- 9:41Speaker 1: I like it's like yes, if you.
- 9:43Speaker 1: Okay, here's the thing.
- 9:44Speaker 1: If you had three, four, five meals and then you took it down to one or two less meals than that, guess what?
- 9:51Speaker 1: You're probably gonna be consuming fewer calories, like you're eating four meals.
- 9:57Speaker 1: Now you eat two.
- 9:58Speaker 1: Shocking, you don't eat as many calories Like it's not rocket science and for we're right back to the calorie restriction.
- 10:05Speaker 1: Right, and this one's obvious how it creates calorie restriction.
- 10:07Speaker 1: I mean, the only thing I've seen is, like you know, maybe pushing your eating window to earlier in the day is more beneficial than later in the day, and that's pretty much just to do with sleep, because if you push it yeah, some people-.
- 10:19Speaker 1: I was saying if you push it super late into the day and you know like till 10 pm, then you go to bed at 10.30, you know, like you're super full, you know you take some while you're digesting, you kind of inhibit, it's fucks with your REM sleep and a whole bunch of shit.
- 10:33Speaker 1: So generally I say you want to leave at least an hour before you go to bed.
- 10:36Speaker 1: You, you know, stop eating at least an hour a couple hours before bed.
- 10:40Speaker 1: So if you push your eating window early in the day it might be more beneficial.
- 10:44Speaker 2: And some of the population that might benefit from intermittent fasting are those who get up and eat late at night.
- 10:51Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 10:51Speaker 2: Or wake up and eat.
- 10:52Speaker 2: It just restricts that window that you are allowed to eat in.
- 10:57Speaker 1: It is a time-based restriction.
- 10:59Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly If you always say like you gain the anything you eat after 8 pm immediately gets turned to fat, like it's all.
- 11:04Speaker 1: It's just the foods we eat late at night.
- 11:05Speaker 1: The foods we eat late at night generally aren't like chicken breast.
- 11:08Speaker 2: You know we're eating, you know chips and we're eating snacks and all that sort of stuff, something quick that you just grab from your cover Because you don't want to make anything.
- 11:17Speaker 1: Exactly so like, yeah, just if you move it early in the day, you know it might be beneficial.
- 11:21Speaker 1: But you know I hear people all the time oh, autophagy generates autophagy in human growth or mode.
- 11:27Speaker 1: And it's just like holy shit, you know when the autophagy is going on all the time.
- 11:33Speaker 2: All the time.
- 11:34Speaker 1: All the time and you know when it stops as soon as you eat anything.
- 11:37Speaker 1: So it's like you're still gonna, like I'm.
- 11:40Speaker 1: It's just.
- 11:42Speaker 1: It's frustrating because, like you know, I have seen like research that like kind of just controlled calorie restriction leads to longevity, just like eating slightly less than your body needs.
- 11:52Speaker 1: It's like it's really it's kind of weird and a lot of it also has been done in animals.
- 11:58Speaker 1: But yeah, like generally calorie restriction can you know lead to some of these things, but it's just blown so far out of proportion it's crazy.
- 12:08Speaker 1: But you know, usually you have to sell your intermittent fasting plan, so you gotta make it seem complicated.
- 12:15Speaker 2: The three supposed benefits from intermittent fasting.
- 12:18Speaker 2: The autophagy, again Lesleyam said the autophagy goes on at all times.
- 12:24Speaker 2: It's the way your body recycles old cells and it does increase during intermittent fasting, but that's because you're not supplying your body with anything and so there's a higher rate of cellular breakdown.
- 12:36Speaker 2: Then there is the growth hormone, which the growth hormone again, is because you have a higher cell turnover rate.
- 12:45Speaker 2: That growth hormone is being used to remake the cells.
- 12:48Speaker 2: It is not there for muscle.
- 12:50Speaker 2: It will not help you with muscle building at all.
- 12:52Speaker 1: And if you're not eating protein, if you stopped eating protein, what's the human growth hormone?
- 12:56Speaker 1: Like you don't have, you don't have amino acids in your system to build.
- 12:59Speaker 1: That's the building blocks for the protein.
- 13:02Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 13:02Speaker 2: And then the last one is that people feel better and that's because you started to starve.
- 13:09Speaker 2: And when you start to starve, your body actually does experience a state of euphoria.
- 13:14Speaker 2: It's not necessarily because you're healthier, it's because you are starving and you are entering that euphoria period.
- 13:21Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean so, like the point is, if it works for you and you like it, that's totally awesome.
- 13:26Speaker 1: I know I talk to a lot of people that really enjoy it and it works for them.
- 13:29Speaker 1: Go ahead, knock yourself out.
- 13:32Speaker 1: It's just, you don't feel like you have to do it to obtain some sort of mystical, magical properties, exactly.
- 13:39Speaker 2: Exactly.
- 13:40Speaker 1: Pretty much nonsense.
- 13:41Speaker 1: Okay, interim fasting do it if you like, not magic.
- 13:45Speaker 1: Maybe earlier in the day figure out what works for you.
- 13:48Speaker 1: What about what should we?
- 13:51Speaker 1: You pick the next one.
- 13:51Speaker 1: What's the next?
- 13:52Speaker 2: Well, I know something that gets brought up along with you a lot as well is plant-based diets.
- 14:01Speaker 1: Yeah, plant-based diets.
- 14:02Speaker 1: I always I get asked about that quite a bit as well and there's a lot of confusion between veganism and plant-based.
- 14:08Speaker 1: So like plant-based is you don't eat any animal products, and veganism is like that.
- 14:13Speaker 1: But kind of like how all squares are rectangles but not all rectangles are squares.
- 14:18Speaker 1: Am I saying that right?
- 14:19Speaker 1: I think that's right.
- 14:20Speaker 1: Point is, people who are vegan are plant-based, but not everyone who is plant-based is necessarily vegan, because veganism you don't deal with anything that uses animal products.
- 14:32Speaker 1: So like your shampoo is like an example, like I get a shampoo that isn't tested on animals, so obviously that person also isn't going to eat any meat or animal products.
- 14:41Speaker 1: but people who are plant-based.
- 14:42Speaker 1: May just you know I buy clothing that's tested on, whatever it is the point is.
- 14:47Speaker 1: So I'm going to say plant-based basically is your diet.
- 14:50Speaker 1: You don't consume any animal products, and there's even some weird ones, like you.
- 14:55Speaker 1: Know what?
- 14:55Speaker 1: You ever heard of those coffee beans that like that?
- 14:57Speaker 1: What's that animal that eats and it poops them out?
- 14:59Speaker 1: You ever heard that?
- 15:00Speaker 2: Oh, I have heard that, yes.
- 15:01Speaker 1: Yeah, there's an animal.
- 15:03Speaker 1: He eats these coffee beans and then he poops them out and they make coffee out of it and apparently it gives it a better taste.
- 15:07Speaker 1: I've never tried it, but apparently it's not vegan.
- 15:10Speaker 2: I saw a bag of those for sale in the Philippines when I was there, exactly it is insanely expensive.
- 15:18Speaker 1: I've heard that I would still buy it and try it, just for out of pure curiosity.
- 15:22Speaker 1: Point is it's not vegan.
- 15:24Speaker 1: So basically, like anything, honey made by bees, anything, no animal products whatsoever.
- 15:30Speaker 1: And so I get a lot of people thinking it's an unhealthy diet.
- 15:32Speaker 1: But I mean, you're still, you're left with the main staples of the Mediterranean diet.
- 15:37Speaker 1: Like, yeah, you don't have the fatty fish and whatnot, but you still have vegetables, fruits, legumes, whole grains.
- 15:42Speaker 1: You know, like, nuts and seeds are a bunch of crazy healthy, so you can still get, and you can definitely get, all the protein.
- 15:51Speaker 1: That's one other thing.
- 15:52Speaker 1: Yeah, it's like, oh, I can't get the protein in.
- 15:54Speaker 1: It's like you definitely, you absolutely can.
- 15:55Speaker 1: Soy is a great source of protein, you know.
- 15:58Speaker 1: Legumes, you know even nuts and seeds have protein.
- 16:00Speaker 1: They're right.
- 16:01Speaker 2: And if you're not getting enough protein in, you're not eating enough beans.
- 16:05Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, it's really not that even like whole grains aren't terrible.
- 16:09Speaker 1: And we're not talking about protein, like getting 200 grams to, you know, maximize muscle growth.
- 16:14Speaker 1: We're talking about just being healthy, like we're talking about just preventing disease longevity, you know.
- 16:20Speaker 1: For that sort of thing.
- 16:21Speaker 1: You don't need to be eating even over 100 grams of protein a day to be, you know, fully healthy.
- 16:26Speaker 1: So you know, plant-based 100% absolutely can be a healthy diet, but it can also be a terrible diet.
- 16:34Speaker 1: You can eat.
- 16:34Speaker 1: I think Oreos are vegan.
- 16:36Speaker 1: I think somebody told me that, I don't know.
- 16:38Speaker 1: You can eat junk food.
- 16:39Speaker 1: You can eat.
- 16:39Speaker 1: You can eat whatever it is Pringles chips, I want to assume chips.
- 16:43Speaker 1: Chips are vegan.
- 16:44Speaker 1: A lot of most chips.
- 16:46Speaker 2: I would assume so yeah.
- 16:47Speaker 1: Right, just like potatoes and oil seasoning.
- 16:49Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 16:50Speaker 1: Right, so you know french fries if they don't have like the McDonald's beef flavor on them or whatever it is Canadian french fries.
- 16:56Speaker 1: Right, so you need french fries and all that stuff.
- 16:59Speaker 1: So, of course, plant-based diets can be, you know, unhealthy, but there also can be healthy ones, just like most diets.
- 17:04Speaker 1: Oh, and before we go on to the next, you know, like the next one, the one I actually wanted to talk about real quick because I get asked about it is weight watchers.
- 17:12Speaker 1: People ask me about weight watchers a lot and basically they just exchange calorie counting for points.
- 17:18Speaker 1: So, like each food, has a certain amount of points and it's like you have zero point foods and those are like I don't know pickles and cucumbers and shit like that that don't have any calories, and so they basically just try to push you towards foods that are high in protein and fiber.
- 17:31Speaker 1: So it just it leads right back into that.
- 17:33Speaker 1: So you know again, if people prefer dealing with points and not dealing with counting calories, hey then it's great.
- 17:40Speaker 1: At least that's my thoughts on it.
- 17:42Speaker 2: Yeah, unfortunately I don't know too much about the weight watcher one.
- 17:45Speaker 1: Yeah, I just can't ask about that.
- 17:46Speaker 1: But it's you know, totally fine.
- 17:48Speaker 1: But what's what do we got next?
- 17:50Speaker 1: What's the next one?
- 17:51Speaker 2: Depends.
- 17:52Speaker 2: Do you want to do keto or carnivore first?
- 17:55Speaker 1: Well, I'll leave keto for the last one We'll do it All right.
- 17:59Speaker 1: Carnivore, because I also get asked about that a lot, because it's a new thing.
- 18:02Speaker 2: Oh, I get asked about that so much yeah.
- 18:04Speaker 1: It's the new thing.
- 18:05Speaker 1: Joe Rogan was talking about it and Joe Rogan knows everything about nutrition and kicking people in the face.
- 18:11Speaker 2: It's definitely not Joe Rogan's job to have controversial people on, that's for sure.
- 18:15Speaker 1: Oh gosh, carnivore, Like.
- 18:17Speaker 1: Okay, so we both agree, we'll go over the same thing.
- 18:19Speaker 1: It works as an elimination diet.
- 18:25Speaker 1: So basically, if you, if you are having GI issues with digesting certain foods and you don't know what those foods are, you go on a carnivore diet.
- 18:34Speaker 1: You eat basically just meat and then you slowly introduce other foods back in.
- 18:40Speaker 1: Now you generally want to do this with a registered dietitian or someone trained to do this so they can help you through the process.
- 18:46Speaker 1: But you slowly introduce foods back in until you find, hey, this one, I introduced this food, it was causing upset.
- 18:53Speaker 1: So now I know this is the food that I should be, you know, staying away from in the future.
- 18:59Speaker 2: Absolutely and by all means.
- 19:01Speaker 1: There's going to be some people very rarely the outliers like McKayla Peterson who are just allergic to all plants, ever and apparently I mean my goodness, just like some people, like it's just allergic to just every plant food and I mean have you?
- 19:18Speaker 2: seen her?
- 19:18Speaker 2: Did you see her allergy test?
- 19:21Speaker 2: I did not see her allergies on an assortment of plants.
- 19:25Speaker 2: In every single one she was allergic to, and so a lot of people use the Petersons as an example as to what carnivore working for people.
- 19:33Speaker 2: She's literally allergic to like every plant, so by all means, carnivore is going to work for her because she can't eat plants.
- 19:42Speaker 1: Yeah, and that's you know that's unfortunate, but that's you have to do, like I always say, the best you can with what you have.
- 19:48Speaker 1: If what you have is an allergy to Fucking everything, then you're gonna have to find the few things that you're not allergic to, and you know, just make the best with what you have.
- 19:56Speaker 1: But the problem is a lot of people tout it as the optimal diet for human, usually calling on our ancestors or some.
- 20:03Speaker 1: You know wishy-washy this and that you know, like this whole idea that we were just like only hunting animals with fucking Spears and shit, like we never ate a goddamn vegetable in our life.
- 20:14Speaker 1: What the hell are you talking about?
- 20:17Speaker 2: anyway, you know I don't want to get into that.
- 20:20Speaker 1: But our ancestors diets were very, very okay.
- 20:23Speaker 1: Oh, very dependent it's.
- 20:24Speaker 1: They ate what they could to keep them alive.
- 20:27Speaker 2: Okay, they weren't just all meat was something you had to work towards.
- 20:31Speaker 1: Yeah, and some of it you know.
- 20:32Speaker 1: Cheese, you know, just drives me crazy.
- 20:35Speaker 2: But but absolutely a lot of people do end up feeling better when they go carnivore Because they eliminated the thing that they were allergic to, not only that generally you it's again.
- 20:46Speaker 1: We come back to this protein or fiber or both.
- 20:49Speaker 1: So obviously not much fiber on the carnivore diet, but there's a fuck ton of protein.
- 20:55Speaker 2: Yeah, and on that note, People defending the carnivore diet always say that fiber isn't necessary.
- 21:03Speaker 2: No it's not necessary, but it's beneficial like.
- 21:08Speaker 1: What I always say is like you know, it's not necessary whole foods.
- 21:10Speaker 1: I could.
- 21:11Speaker 1: I could literally just only eat ultra process foods.
- 21:13Speaker 1: I could eat only cheese.
- 21:15Speaker 1: It's an Oreos and, yeah, I could survive on that.
- 21:18Speaker 1: Is that optimal for me?
- 21:19Speaker 1: No.
- 21:20Speaker 1: No but I could do it because it's not necessary to eat whole foods.
- 21:24Speaker 1: Like what are you talking about?
- 21:26Speaker 1: Like eight different studies have shown, for every 10 grams of fiber you add into your diet, you reduce your risk of all-cause mortality death by 10%, and that is just an astounding number that Blows me away every time I see it and or hear it.
- 21:38Speaker 1: I mean you quit smoking and I think it reduces your risk by like 13% or some shit like that.
- 21:42Speaker 1: So like, adding 13 grams of fiber into your into your diet has like about the same net effect.
- 21:47Speaker 1: That is mind-bottling.
- 21:48Speaker 1: Okay, is a my.
- 21:50Speaker 1: Put your mind into a bottle it's nuts.
- 21:52Speaker 1: So yes, fiber is super important in the car.
- 21:56Speaker 2: We both agree that Having fiber in your diet as long as by all means.
- 22:01Speaker 2: If you can't eat plants like McKillip Peterson, then Unfortunate that's.
- 22:08Speaker 2: That means you're an outlier, but for the rest of us, we both agree that having fiber in your diet is extremely Beneficial to us.
- 22:16Speaker 1: Yes, and so you know they.
- 22:18Speaker 1: There's basically no fiber on the carnivore diet, but there is a lot of protein, and protein is very satiating and yes, it is the highest thermic, thermic-effective food, which we've talked about before.
- 22:27Speaker 1: It burns basically the most calories to break down protein as opposed to carbs or fats.
- 22:31Speaker 1: So you know you're gonna eat a lot of protein and you know, you know it's really the combination of simple carbs and fats that makes things Hyperpalatable, easy to overeat.
- 22:41Speaker 1: So you look at Oreos, you look at chips simple carbohydrates, fats, easy to over consume.
- 22:45Speaker 1: You're eating I don't know what are they?
- 22:47Speaker 1: Steak Eggs, like these things are very filling.
- 22:51Speaker 1: You're not gonna.
- 22:52Speaker 1: Yeah, you're not.
- 22:52Speaker 1: It's.
- 22:53Speaker 1: It'd be tough to gain body fat on that diet.
- 22:55Speaker 1: You could, theoretically you could, but it would be a real tough road to get there.
- 23:00Speaker 2: And if you are gonna go carnivore diet, I highly recommend you stick to lean meats, fish, stuff, like that.
- 23:06Speaker 2: You want to keep your Saturday set.
- 23:08Speaker 2: You want to keep your saturated fat down your Saturn fat keep your Saturn fat.
- 23:14Speaker 1: The Saturn.
- 23:14Speaker 1: Fat is the worst type of fabulous.
- 23:16Speaker 2: I'm Saturn.
- 23:17Speaker 2: They never talked about.
- 23:18Speaker 1: Saturn, fat, the rings, the fat rings.
- 23:23Speaker 2: Oh shit, come you open, you just count the rings.
- 23:26Speaker 2: The rings different.
- 23:30Speaker 1: Different thing, oh shit.
- 23:32Speaker 1: So yeah, like your saturated fats.
- 23:34Speaker 1: We see, if you over around eight to ten percent of your calories, it generally does seem to increase your risk for cardiovascular disease and other sorts of bad stuff.
- 23:43Speaker 1: So generally try and stick to more the fattier fish, the lean cuts of meat, that sort of thing.
- 23:47Speaker 1: But on the carnivore diet it's going to be quite difficult to keep your saturated fats to a minimum because it's a.
- 23:56Speaker 1: It's a lot of meat Like I mean you could do it, but I'm sure most people who do the you know carnivore diet are not Keeping.
- 24:03Speaker 1: You know they're saturated fats low.
- 24:05Speaker 2: No, unfortunately.
- 24:07Speaker 1: So yeah, like and that's the thing is like it helps people lose weight.
- 24:09Speaker 1: So they lose weight, they're like, hey, I feel better, like, yeah, you lost a bunch of weight, you're not eating as many.
- 24:15Speaker 2: You are not eating as many allergies.
- 24:18Speaker 1: Yeah, that, and you're not eating.
- 24:19Speaker 1: Before you were going from eating a ton of processed foods to no processed foods.
- 24:22Speaker 1: Yeah, like you know, like of course you're, I'm not shocked at all.
- 24:26Speaker 1: So people use these little.
- 24:27Speaker 1: You know, like, hey, look at this person, joe did it and he feels so much better.
- 24:31Speaker 1: You know, that's always, it's the same old thing.
- 24:33Speaker 1: The snake oil salesman like, oh, look at this person that you know I gave my tincture to and they feel so much better.
- 24:39Speaker 2: Tincture, tinctures, I love that word tincture, that is a fun word.
- 24:43Speaker 2: It's a great word, so yeah, almost as good as indubitably and masticate.
- 24:49Speaker 2: Indubitably you know what I'm.
- 24:53Speaker 1: You know I love the word lisp because who the fuck decided that like you're gonna put an S in the word for people who can't pronounce S like that?
- 25:00Speaker 1: Right shit move.
- 25:02Speaker 1: That's a, that's a dick move, right there move dick move like oh yeah, you can't say s?
- 25:06Speaker 1: What should we call the thing you can't?
- 25:08Speaker 1: You know what you call it lisp Assholes indubitably indubitably so, and so yeah, I guess carnivore diet you know it could help you lose weight great good elimination diet, but not something personally I would recommend for someone trying to Just eat healthy, essentially, I guess no.
- 25:32Speaker 1: You know, we always say diverse diet is the best diet, right, you know?
- 25:37Speaker 1: Like a bunch of different things, carnivores, like fuck all that Get rid of it all.
- 25:41Speaker 1: But anyway, talking about restrictions, I guess we should move on to keto Say hey, hey guys, I'm gonna rip.
- 25:49Speaker 1: Listen, I'm sorry if you're a keto person.
- 25:52Speaker 1: I'm so sorry.
- 25:53Speaker 1: That's great Like.
- 25:53Speaker 1: If it works for you, that's totally awesome.
- 25:55Speaker 2: I work for you.
- 25:57Speaker 1: Yes, go for it, knock yourself out.
- 25:58Speaker 1: That's awesome.
- 25:59Speaker 1: I cannot say that I, if you ask me, liam, once the worst time you've ever felt in your entire life?
- 26:03Speaker 1: It's when I did keto, and it's not even close, because you know like, carbs are your bodies.
- 26:09Speaker 1: I people piss me off.
- 26:10Speaker 1: Carbs are your bodies primary energy source and I and I like the Ignorance I get after I say that drives me.
- 26:19Speaker 1: So they're like oh, brock Lesnar did keto and you're telling him he's not eating his primary energy source.
- 26:24Speaker 1: I'm like what the fuck are I?
- 26:25Speaker 1: Literally have people tell me that I'm like what kind of?
- 26:27Speaker 1: I'm done, I'm done, I can't, I can't.
- 26:29Speaker 1: Carbohydrates are your bodies preferred energy source.
- 26:32Speaker 1: Yes, you can make it through ketones, through cutting out carbs and old lean eating fats, but if for me, it's literally like taking a fucking hybrid car and being like, no, it's only gonna run on gasoline like it's got two things yeah pretty much.
- 26:46Speaker 1: Why would you cut one of the main things out, that is so Drop takeover.
- 26:50Speaker 1: I'm listen, I'm mad.
- 26:51Speaker 1: I'm already mad.
- 26:52Speaker 1: We've been talking about it for 10 seconds, or whatever.
- 26:55Speaker 2: Oh man, you should get.
- 26:56Speaker 2: You guys should see him on the video right now.
- 26:58Speaker 2: He's just like flailing around like a mad person.
- 27:02Speaker 1: You know what I look like.
- 27:03Speaker 1: You know what?
- 27:03Speaker 2: I do.
- 27:03Speaker 2: I get mad at keto and it upsets me but Absolutely that we have two energy systems and those energy systems work together.
- 27:12Speaker 2: There's it's not one at a time.
- 27:14Speaker 2: They're working together and Carbohydrates are the preferred fuel source for a lot of the things we do.
- 27:21Speaker 2: There's a couple that the fats absolutely are the preferred source, such as what's commonly called zone 2.
- 27:29Speaker 2: Cardio.
- 27:30Speaker 2: That ends up being that's why we call it a fat burning zone is just that's when we often use ketones ketones.
- 27:38Speaker 2: Ketunes.
- 27:43Speaker 2: I'm just gonna call it ketones from day one.
- 27:46Speaker 1: The fat burning zone.
- 27:47Speaker 1: I, like you, got to love this.
- 27:49Speaker 1: The sale on that is great when they're trying to get people to buy their, you know, a program or whatever but an an important point about ketones and the whole keto thing is that it's not a on-off switch.
- 28:05Speaker 2: There is no magic point where you suddenly boom, you're in ketosis.
- 28:10Speaker 2: No, you are always using the amount of ketones relative to how much your body needs and, by all means, if you're eating a ton of fat and you're having to use ketones for all of your exercise and stuff, you're going to have higher levels of ketones, but you're always in a state of ketosis.
- 28:32Speaker 2: Even if you have a high carb diet, some of your fat is still going to be utilized for energy and you're still going to have ketones and it's.
- 28:43Speaker 1: What drives me crazy is that, like you go on keto.
- 28:46Speaker 1: If you go on keto, you'll burn fat for fuel.
- 28:48Speaker 1: Yes, but you're going to burn the fats that you are consuming in your diet.
- 28:55Speaker 2: The fats you put in your mouth.
- 28:57Speaker 1: Yes, could you burn the fats in your body, store the stored fats?
- 29:00Speaker 1: Sure, if it puts you in a calorie deficit, which it very well might, because, as we stated, if you're eating more protein and fiber, you'll generally lose weight because they're very filling.
- 29:11Speaker 1: Fucking.
- 29:12Speaker 1: Keto does net carbs.
- 29:14Speaker 1: So which net carbs is?
- 29:16Speaker 1: If you have 20 carbs and 10 of them are fiber, there's only 10 net carbs because you subtract the fiber from the total carbs.
- 29:22Speaker 1: So you see all these products that are like it's keto.
- 29:25Speaker 1: Oh, it's got 34 grams of fiber, or 34 grams of carbohydrates, I should say, but 30 of them are fiber, so it's keto.
- 29:31Speaker 1: So people are eating a ton of fiber and they're also going to be eating more protein because they eat more meats.
- 29:36Speaker 1: That are other things that are low in carbs.
- 29:38Speaker 1: So of course, these things are going to be very filling.
- 29:40Speaker 1: But some people can absolutely gain weight on keto because if you're eating all these fats which fats have nyes?
- 29:46Speaker 1: We stated in the previous episode, nine calories per gram.
- 29:49Speaker 1: They're very more.
- 29:50Speaker 1: They're twice over, twice the calorie density of carbs or protein.
- 29:55Speaker 1: You could easily put yourself into a calorie surplus if you're eating a tons of nuts and avocados and all these things that are very high in calories you could eat.
- 30:04Speaker 1: People do gain weight on keto.
- 30:07Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 30:10Speaker 1: Can you tell?
- 30:11Speaker 1: Can you tell like I'm upset by because?
- 30:13Speaker 1: I don't want to shit on it completely because, yes, it can totally work.
- 30:17Speaker 2: It does work for some people.
- 30:18Speaker 1: It totally works and if you like it, that's awesome.
- 30:21Speaker 1: My main question is can you stick to it for the rest of your life?
- 30:25Speaker 1: And the answer for most people is going to be no Sticking the long term.
- 30:31Speaker 1: It's here and for keto is terrible.
- 30:32Speaker 1: Keto was created to help children who have seizures.
- 30:36Speaker 1: There's a very rare.
- 30:37Speaker 1: There's very rare seizures where, if you, you know, yeah, if you have epilepsy, for some children, removing carbs completely can help control their seizures.
- 30:46Speaker 2: And so it's a very rare diet to stick to.
- 30:48Speaker 2: I want to emphasize that they were doing it under strict doctor and nutrition and supervision, because the amount of fat in their diet to achieve that was upwards of 90% of what they were consuming, which is extremely dangerous.
- 31:05Speaker 1: Right, most people are going like a lots of protein, so you're eating a ton more protein like keto.
- 31:09Speaker 1: The real keto diet is, yeah, like 90%, like it's insane.
- 31:13Speaker 1: It's almost all fat yeah, so it's.
- 31:16Speaker 1: It's kind of bastardized version of keto that we have.
- 31:21Speaker 1: That, yes, can work, but it can also, again, it can fuck with your cholesterol levels, because most people who do keto are like hold the bun, extra cheese, add bacon like butter in my coffee and put butter in my.
- 31:34Speaker 1: So you're eating a ton of saturated fats which increase your cholesterol levels, which are which, no matter what people tell you, is not good for your health.
- 31:40Speaker 1: So like, yes, you can do this Mediterranean version of keto and if you can stick to it, it's amazing, that's awesome, but most people are not going to be able to stick to it for, you know, year, two years, five years, 10 years, whatever, and so I just I can.
- 31:55Speaker 1: You know, it's not something I am going to advocate for.
- 31:58Speaker 1: Basically.
- 32:00Speaker 2: If you want to do keto, my advice would be to not try to add fat to everything you don't need to do that.
- 32:09Speaker 2: There's like I said.
- 32:10Speaker 2: There's not a magic point where you're suddenly in ketosis.
- 32:13Speaker 2: You don't need to constantly add fat, just focus on subtracting the carbs.
- 32:19Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean I like I'm trying to think of advice for giving people the keto, Like I just hate so much I don't know, it's even hard for me to even be.
- 32:26Speaker 1: Like, here's how to do it.
- 32:27Speaker 1: Like you know, try, basically try and stick to the mono and polyunsaturated fats and try and stick to your nuts and seeds and avocados, you know, and all that sort of stuff, and try and limit the butters and the animal fats, that sort of thing.
- 32:40Speaker 1: Go with fatty fish instead of fatty red meats and try and still get like your fiber, like berries people in keto will still eat berries because they're very high in fiber, generally pretty low in calories, lots of antioxidants.
- 32:48Speaker 1: Good things for you.
- 32:50Speaker 1: So, you know, don't?
- 32:51Speaker 1: You know, try and stick to get some vegetables, the non-starchy vegetables, you know, like you know.
- 32:58Speaker 2: And I'm going to say it again there is no magic switch for being in ketosis.
- 33:01Speaker 2: If you eat some carbs, it's okay.
- 33:04Speaker 2: It didn't stop ketosis, it did not.
- 33:07Speaker 2: I can promise you.
- 33:08Speaker 2: You can have some carbs and it won't break it.
- 33:11Speaker 1: And I'm going to be honest, all the keto products taste like butt cheeks Like they're so they really do they really like oh this keto bar.
- 33:17Speaker 1: I'm like oh it's so oily, like it just turned to.
- 33:20Speaker 1: Oh it's so gross.
- 33:23Speaker 1: I can't like a lot of the keto products.
- 33:26Speaker 1: It's just and the like ice creams are like it's like just as many calories, if not more calories, than a standard standard ice cream like oh cool, they're usually really heavy in almond or coconut butters and it's just, they're just, oh no, can't do it.
- 33:45Speaker 1: So I, yeah, I'm yeah.
- 33:47Speaker 1: So if you okay, well, yeah, if you like keto and you can stick to it and you can keep your saturated fats to a minimum, keep it up.
- 33:54Speaker 1: That's amazing, yeah, but for me, I'm just, you know, forget all the diets, just everything, like we fucking named our goddamn podcast.
- 34:03Speaker 1: In moderation, keep it reasonable.
- 34:07Speaker 1: Make sure you focus on fiber and protein if you're trying to lose weight, and you don't need to fucking do all this crazy nonsense in order to lose weight for a few months in order to put more weight back on afterwards.
- 34:20Speaker 2: No, Now if a given diet is working for you if you can sustain it.
- 34:25Speaker 2: That's the big thing, with everything you need to be able to sustain that way of eating for the rest of your life.
- 34:32Speaker 2: If you can do that, then that diet works for you and you can keep going with it.
- 34:36Speaker 2: But if it doesn't, if you can't sustain it, if you're not enjoying it, there is no diet that is some sort of magic thing.
- 34:46Speaker 2: Keto's not magic, Carnivore's not magic.
- 34:48Speaker 2: They are all just tools to achieve calorie deficits and you can try a different tool.
- 34:54Speaker 2: Different tools work for different people.
- 34:57Speaker 1: Exactly, I mean most like.
- 34:59Speaker 1: I've seen studies where like 90-something percent of people, once they lose weight on a diet, if you look five years, 10 years, 15 years down the road they've put all the weight back on, or maybe even then some, because again you just can't stick to it.
- 35:12Speaker 1: So you know, I don't even like that word diet, because it inherently kind of means, or at least people think of it as like oh, I'll do this for a few months at most, and then I can stop.
- 35:23Speaker 2: Okay.
- 35:23Speaker 1: Once you stop what happens.
- 35:24Speaker 1: So focus on just sustainability.
- 35:27Speaker 1: You know I'd rather you do a few small things, lose five pounds and keep it off, than do some crazy nonsense, lose 50 pounds in a few months and then put it all back on later on, because that's even worse for you.
- 35:40Speaker 2: And if you need to go back to episode one, where we talk about taking things slow, one step at a time, in moderation.
- 35:50Speaker 1: Fucking diets man.
- 35:52Speaker 1: I'm all riled up and it's 10 pm.
- 35:54Speaker 1: Good thing I stay up late at night.
- 35:55Speaker 1: This is some bullshit.
- 35:56Speaker 1: I'm angry.
- 35:59Speaker 2: Come on, you guys have gotten Liam all angry.
- 36:01Speaker 2: Now Look at this.
- 36:04Speaker 1: Easy way to get me upset is just ask about keto.
- 36:10Speaker 2: Again, if keto works for you, that's fine.
- 36:12Speaker 2: If it works for you, you like it.
- 36:14Speaker 2: We both do not like it.
- 36:15Speaker 1: Just please.
- 36:16Speaker 1: You know, I just needed a podcast that I could just rant and say my true feelings about it.
- 36:22Speaker 1: But if you like it, that's awesome.
- 36:24Speaker 1: Like I could rant for another half hour about how terrible banana and Laffy Taffy is.
- 36:27Speaker 1: But if you guys like that for some weird reason, hey, be weird, that's okay.
- 36:33Speaker 2: People who like bananas are weird period.
- 36:36Speaker 2: So when it comes to diets, it really comes down to what works for you.
- 36:41Speaker 2: There is no right diet.
- 36:43Speaker 2: There's just what is right for you.
- 36:44Speaker 2: But even then, it's important to focus on what is sustainable and you can blur the lines between those diets.
- 36:52Speaker 2: If you like having a little bit extra fat, you don't have to go crazy with the keto.
- 36:58Speaker 2: You can add a little extra fat.
- 37:00Speaker 2: If you want to add a little extra meat, you don't have to go crazy with the carnivore.
- 37:04Speaker 2: You can just add a little extra meat and do it one step at a time, so you know that the change is working for you If you enjoy it, because if you don't enjoy it it's not going to be sustainable.
- 37:15Speaker 2: You're not going to do it for the rest of your life.
- 37:18Speaker 1: You mean it's not black and white and there's a little bit of nuance to everything.
- 37:22Speaker 2: Oh, my gosh Fucking groundbreaking.
- 37:25Speaker 2: Whoa.
- 37:27Speaker 1: Who would have thought?
- 37:28Speaker 1: I'll tell that to the internet.
- 37:31Speaker 2: Although, speaking of the internet, I think it's about time we read off some of these emails that we got.
- 37:39Speaker 1: I feel like we need a little like bloop, like a little like music or something that goes on before we, you know, we we read these off.
- 37:46Speaker 2: Let's find something later, let's throw some random in there.
- 37:48Speaker 1: Dude, just like completely maybe a Halloween theme.
- 37:52Speaker 1: Halloween's coming up Like a creepy music box.

- 44:51Speaker 2: It is based entirely on what you're able to afford and what you want to help with.
- 44:58Speaker 2: The money will go towards covering the cost of server equipment, this Riverside program that we use, stuff like that.
- 45:08Speaker 2: Another thing we'll do is occasionally not every month, because that would be way too often but we will do episodes, which will be live shows, live call-in shows with our Patreon subscribers, where you guys can call in and ask questions or, even better, call in and tell us stories or things you like, or things that worked for you.
- 45:28Speaker 2: We want to hear that stuff.
- 45:29Speaker 2: Yeah, it doesn't have to be a question, we just want to hear from you.
- 45:33Speaker 1: We love hearing from you guys, and you know what you're going through, and other people do as well, because they're and we're all in the same boat together and we can all we can all learn from each other's mistakes, and you know victories and all that sort of stuff.
- 45:43Speaker 1: So it's, it's great.
- 45:44Speaker 1: I love hearing from everybody else.
