Latest / Michelle Explains Anime, Poorly / Banana Fish Ep. 3- Across the River and into the Trees
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Hey, it's your person, Michelle. I guess back again to
- 0:06Speaker 1: torture you with this anime. Yeah, so I don't think
- 0:10Speaker 1: I've said this yet, but kind of recently, there was
- 0:14Speaker 1: an announcement that Magic Night Ray Earth is getting some
- 0:18Speaker 1: sort of new adaptation, which is pretty cool, and I
- 0:25Speaker 1: thought that I would just mention that because it's shojo,
- 0:28Speaker 1: Banana Fish's shojo, Like, maybe if you like this, you're
- 0:33Speaker 1: like that. I'm just kidding. They're not even relatively the same.
- 0:36Speaker 1: They're for the same demographic, but they're like worlds apart.
- 0:41Speaker 1: But who knows. Sometimes it's nice to watch a little
- 0:45Speaker 1: more showjo, so maybe you can check that out when
- 0:49Speaker 1: it comes out. The original anime kind of sucks, but
- 0:52Speaker 1: the monk is pretty okay, so who knows. But enough
- 0:57Speaker 1: about Magic Night Ray Earth. Let's talk of what we
- 1:00Speaker 1: really want to talk about, I guess, which is Banana
- 1:04Speaker 1: Fish Episode three. But before we start, I wanted to
- 1:06Speaker 1: go over a couple of things that kind of come
- 1:08Speaker 1: up in this episode or don't come up in this episode,
- 1:11Speaker 1: but it needed you to know about. So first of all,
- 1:13Speaker 1: in the last episode, I mentioned that according to the manga,
- 1:17Speaker 1: this takes place on Riker's Island, so I wanted to
- 1:20Speaker 1: let you know a little bit about that in case
- 1:21Speaker 1: you're not familiar with New York prisons. So Riker's Island
- 1:27Speaker 1: is a prison island in the East River that's in
- 1:30Speaker 1: the Bronx, and it's one of the world's largest correctional institutions.
- 1:35Speaker 1: It houses approximately ten thousand inmates a day at least
- 1:41Speaker 1: as of twenty fifteen, and it's a jail, not a prison,
- 1:46Speaker 1: so about eighty five percent of the people who are
- 1:51Speaker 1: being housed there are pre trial detainees, and I will
- 1:55Speaker 1: get to that in one second, but continuing, it has
- 1:59Speaker 1: a reputation for violence, physical and mental abuse, and neglect
- 2:04Speaker 1: of inmates. So it's a great place, and at least
- 2:07Speaker 1: according to the Wikipedia article, New York voted to shut
- 2:12Speaker 1: it down by twenty twenty six, so it's time is limited,
- 2:16Speaker 1: but it's notorious. Anyway, what I said about it being
- 2:21Speaker 1: a jail and not a prison, I wanted to clarify
- 2:24Speaker 1: that because in the anime they're going to say prison
- 2:27Speaker 1: a lot, and that's just kind of a translation error,
- 2:32Speaker 1: or it's possible that in Japan there aren't two separate words,
- 2:36Speaker 1: but in the US technically, and I know everyone kind
- 2:39Speaker 1: of uses them interchangeably. Technically, prison and jail are not
- 2:43Speaker 1: the same thing. Prison is exclusively for people who have
- 2:48Speaker 1: been convicted of a crime and usually longer term sentences.
- 2:54Speaker 1: Jails are usually for people who are awaiting and sometimes
- 3:02Speaker 1: who have like low level convictions where they're serving for
- 3:06Speaker 1: like less than a year. For Rikers Island, there's like
- 3:08Speaker 1: a whole bunch of like little prisons on the islands
- 3:12Speaker 1: or facilities or whatever, and I don't think any of
- 3:16Speaker 1: them are combined where you'd have people who were sentenced
- 3:19Speaker 1: serving with people who are waiting for trial. In fact,
- 3:22Speaker 1: if this was real life, there's actually one facility that
- 3:26Speaker 1: I don't remember the name of at Riker's Island that's
- 3:29Speaker 1: just for like younger men, so like eighteen or whatever,
- 3:33Speaker 1: the like early twenties. So actually that's probably where ash
- 3:36Speaker 1: would be and not in this kind of general population whatever.
- 3:41Speaker 1: But hey, I don't expect everyone to, you know, care
- 3:45Speaker 1: about the minutia of the criminal justice system in New York,
- 3:49Speaker 1: and I don't expect for you know, a Japanese mangaica,
- 3:53Speaker 1: especially one in nineteen eighty five, when we didn't have
- 3:55Speaker 1: like this robust Internet where you can just go, like
- 3:58Speaker 1: I wonder, like exactly what the laws are in the
- 4:02Speaker 1: New York criminal justice system, Like I don't expect that
- 4:04Speaker 1: to be perfect, so just letting you know for some reason,
- 4:08Speaker 1: So anytime that the translation says prison, I've changed to
- 4:13Speaker 1: jail because I just think that that's a user error. Basically,
- 4:17Speaker 1: now you know, I'm sorry. Anyway, back to Bananafish Things,
- 4:25Speaker 1: Episode three is called Across the River and Through the Trees,
- 4:30Speaker 1: which is the title of a novel by Ernest Hemingway.
- 4:33Speaker 1: And I'm gonna read a little snippet of the plot
- 4:36Speaker 1: for you because I thought it was interesting. So basically,
- 4:40Speaker 1: it is about a fifty year old kernel from World
- 4:45Speaker 1: War One and World War Two who is you know,
- 4:48Speaker 1: back and I think he's like duck hunting, and he
- 4:50Speaker 1: has terminal heart cancer and the whole thing is like
- 4:53Speaker 1: a flashback of like his service in both of the wars. Basically,
- 4:59Speaker 1: and according to Wikipedia, the primary narrative of the book
- 5:02Speaker 1: focuses on his romance with a eighteen year old Venetian
- 5:07Speaker 1: girl named Branada who he calls daughter Gross and she's
- 5:13Speaker 1: aware that he is dying of cancer. And the book
- 5:16Speaker 1: is about how he and Renata are coming to terms
- 5:18Speaker 1: with his impending death. So yeah, I'm not sure if
- 5:23Speaker 1: the actual literature that's being referenced has any bearing on
- 5:30Speaker 1: the actual episodes, but that one like kind of creeped
- 5:32Speaker 1: me out, and I went like, hi, I can get that. Yeah,
- 5:35Speaker 1: that definitely feels a little bit like banana Fish. So
- 5:38Speaker 1: I figured i'd share that one with you. I don't know,
- 5:40Speaker 1: I haven't really decided how I'm doing this yet, but
- 5:43Speaker 1: now you know a little bit about across the river
- 5:46Speaker 1: and through the trees. Gross, let's actually do the episode now.
- 5:53Speaker 1: Sorry for making you wait, I guess, and yeah, let's
- 5:58Speaker 1: let's do it and hope the best. I'm gonna really
- 6:01Speaker 1: try this one not to like fuck it up. So
- 6:04Speaker 1: we start with an exterior shot of a large beige
- 6:08Speaker 1: brick building that kind of has a Gothic architecture bend
- 6:11Speaker 1: to it. I assume that this is the jail, and
- 6:15Speaker 1: we have a voiceover that says does this happen often?
- 6:20Speaker 1: And we see that we are in a visitor's room,
- 6:22Speaker 1: like the visitor's room of the jail, and Charlie, Shunichi,
- 6:25Speaker 1: and Agi are at a table and Shoonichi is like
- 6:30Speaker 1: I mean being sent to jail without a trial, And
- 6:32Speaker 1: Charlie's like, it's legally possible, but rare. No, it's just
- 6:37Speaker 1: that he probably didn't get bail. Guys, it's not that
- 6:41Speaker 1: weird anyway. Age says, what's gonna happen to Ash? And
- 6:46Speaker 1: Charlie's like, well, And then Max enters the room, who
- 6:51Speaker 1: is a tall, kind of middle aged looking dude with
- 6:54Speaker 1: light brown hair, blue eyes, and kind of a five
- 6:57Speaker 1: o'clock shadow, who I think we are supposed to know
- 7:01Speaker 1: is the Max from the first episode who shots Griffin.
- 7:05Speaker 1: Remember when they were in the army. Anyway, he walks
- 7:08Speaker 1: into the room and he's like yo, Shunichi and they
- 7:11Speaker 1: look over and Shoonichi stands and he's like long time,
- 7:14Speaker 1: no see man, and they hug. I like this, they're
- 7:17Speaker 1: actually good friends and not just acquaintances. And Shoonichi says,
- 7:22Speaker 1: you're such an idiot to end up in jail, and
- 7:25Speaker 1: he pats him on the back and he's like, I
- 7:27Speaker 1: heard you punched a cop. Yeah he did. Did you
- 7:31Speaker 1: realize what you put us through? And Max laughs and
- 7:34Speaker 1: he's like, my bad. And he looks over and sees
- 7:37Speaker 1: Charlie like sitting there looking super serious, and he's like,
- 7:40Speaker 1: what's up, Charlie, And then I guess we cut to
- 7:42Speaker 1: a little while later because Max is like sitting now
- 7:46Speaker 1: and he's like, you're crazy. I've had a hard time
- 7:49Speaker 1: looking after my own ass here. What can I do
- 7:51Speaker 1: against those rough housers with my delicate little arms? Huh?
- 7:55Speaker 1: He does not look like his arms are delicate. Also,
- 7:57Speaker 1: he punched a cop and Charlie's like, I know, but
- 8:01Speaker 1: we need your help and Max is like yeah, but man,
- 8:04Speaker 1: and Ag says please and Max looks over at him
- 8:08Speaker 1: kind of surprised, and Age's like, he saved my life.
- 8:13Speaker 1: I'm begging you to protect him. Max sighs and kind
- 8:16Speaker 1: of rests his head on his hand, and then we
- 8:19Speaker 1: go to the opening theme. Yes. Coming back from probably
- 8:23Speaker 1: a commercial break, we see Ash being let into a
- 8:26Speaker 1: cell and the guard to like a person who's like
- 8:29Speaker 1: lying on a bed with a book over his face, says,
- 8:32Speaker 1: new inmate, be nice, and I kind of like paused
- 8:35Speaker 1: here to see what the book is called. And it's
- 8:37Speaker 1: called Unfair by Jock Nicol, which doesn't seem to be
- 8:42Speaker 1: a real book, so there's that anyway, The guy takes
- 8:45Speaker 1: the book off his face, and it's Max, thank god.
- 8:48Speaker 1: And Ash walks in and he kind of like looks
- 8:50Speaker 1: around the cell and Max is like, A'm Max Lobo
- 8:53Speaker 1: and he extends his hand and Ash says, Ash links
- 8:56Speaker 1: and they shake hands. Max is like you're young. How
- 9:00Speaker 1: old are you? And Ash is like what about you,
- 9:03Speaker 1: old man? And Max says, old man, I'm thirty two.
- 9:07Speaker 1: He does look older than thirty two. And he is
- 9:10Speaker 1: so loud that like people start yelling at him from
- 9:13Speaker 1: the other cells and like tossing things at the cell
- 9:16Speaker 1: and some guy's like shut up, Max, and Max is
- 9:19Speaker 1: like sorry. So Ash says you're thirty two, you really
- 9:24Speaker 1: are old, and he climbs to the top bunk because
- 9:26Speaker 1: Max is on the bottom bunk and says I'm seventeen
- 9:31Speaker 1: and Max is like, compared to you, anyone would be old.
- 9:34Speaker 1: Ash lays down and Max says, where are you from?
- 9:38Speaker 1: Got any family? That's a good question. We actually don't
- 9:41Speaker 1: know if Ash has any family. Ash is just like,
- 9:44Speaker 1: you sure talk a lot. Max kind of like chuckles
- 9:47Speaker 1: and is like yeah, sorry, I'm actually a journalist. And
- 9:50Speaker 1: Ash says Max Lobo, Huh, there's a columnist by that
- 9:54Speaker 1: name with the greenwich Tribune he wrote seven hundred and
- 9:57Speaker 1: thirty Days in Baghdad, and Max like excitedly gets up
- 10:01Speaker 1: and leans over the top bunk and he's like, yeah,
- 10:03Speaker 1: I wrote that. You read it, and Ash says William
- 10:07Speaker 1: Ouster's reportage was way better. You should quit writing that
- 10:10Speaker 1: pretentious stuff and stick to the columns. Max is crushed
- 10:14Speaker 1: and he covers his face and Ash says, hey, I
- 10:17Speaker 1: actually meant that as a compliment. Your columns are way
- 10:20Speaker 1: better than those lousy paperbacks out there, and Max thinks, damn,
- 10:24Speaker 1: what's with this kid? He really hit home with that one,
- 10:27Speaker 1: and then he remembers Charlie saying, anyway, Ash isn't just
- 10:30Speaker 1: some delinquent, so don't take him lightly, and he thinks, geez,
- 10:34Speaker 1: this is way different than what I imagined, an elite
- 10:37Speaker 1: thug who reads political books and even local newspaper columns.
- 10:42Speaker 1: Next we get an exterior shot of the jail and
- 10:45Speaker 1: I guess it's morning. Some birds are chirping. I think,
- 10:47Speaker 1: if I'm thinking of the right parts. Then we cut
- 10:50Speaker 1: to assuming Max and Ash's legs as they're walking down
- 10:55Speaker 1: the hall, and then we see that people may or
- 10:59Speaker 1: may not be staring at them, and Max thinks, wait
- 11:04Speaker 1: a second, maybe he's not much of a fighter. And
- 11:07Speaker 1: Max is like explaining like all sorts of jail stuff
- 11:10Speaker 1: to Ash, but we can't hear it because Max is
- 11:13Speaker 1: thinking over his explaining, so he thinks that'll make things easy.
- 11:19Speaker 1: We'll just sit quietly and read. And then he points
- 11:23Speaker 1: ahead and out loud says, and the library's up there.
- 11:27Speaker 1: Want to take a look. And Ash is like probably
- 11:30Speaker 1: barely paying attention because he's feeling uncomfortable, and he says,
- 11:34Speaker 1: why is everyone staring at me? Max says, cause you're
- 11:40Speaker 1: new here, plus you're young. Since they're walking, he'd been
- 11:46Speaker 1: looking forward and he looks over at Ash, and Ash
- 11:48Speaker 1: looks just totally unconcerned, actually, and Max says, you better
- 11:53Speaker 1: not wander around by yourself, and As says why, and
- 11:59Speaker 1: Max is like he doesn't know what to say, and
- 12:03Speaker 1: he's just like, well, you know, young guys are seen
- 12:08Speaker 1: as salts, if you know what I mean. Ash just
- 12:12Speaker 1: kind of stares at him blankly. At least I thought
- 12:16Speaker 1: it looked like a total blank stare. And Max thinks, oh, no,
- 12:21Speaker 1: I think I scared him too much, and he puts
- 12:24Speaker 1: his hand over shoulder and he says something that we
- 12:26Speaker 1: really can't hear, but I think in the manga it
- 12:28Speaker 1: was like, don't worry about it. Something something something, It
- 12:30Speaker 1: doesn't matter, I guess because anyway. We cut to Ash
- 12:34Speaker 1: taking a tray of actually okay looking food and I
- 12:37Speaker 1: guess the cafeteria and Ash says, this is pretty crappy.
- 12:41Speaker 1: The soup kitchen serves better shit than this. Max is like, yeah,
- 12:44Speaker 1: it takes some time to get used to it. Let's
- 12:47Speaker 1: sit here, and they sit down at an empty table
- 12:50Speaker 1: and there's a guy sitting at a table behind them,
- 12:52Speaker 1: and we overhear him say he's quite cute, and the
- 12:57Speaker 1: guy he's talking to says, I might visit him tonight.
- 13:02Speaker 1: Max is listening and he looks super worried, and again
- 13:06Speaker 1: he says, don't wander around alone, okay, and Ash says,
- 13:10Speaker 1: what about you. You're being awfully kind to me. Max
- 13:14Speaker 1: gets all flustered and he's like me, yeah right, I'm
- 13:17Speaker 1: just looking out for you. As it's happening, we get
- 13:20Speaker 1: this kind of obscured dude who's too close to the
- 13:24Speaker 1: camera for us to see, kind of walk over, but
- 13:26Speaker 1: we do see that he is a snake tattoo. Oh no,
- 13:29Speaker 1: it's the guy from episode two, and Snake Guy says, hey, there, newbie,
- 13:35Speaker 1: and we get a look at him and he's just
- 13:37Speaker 1: this like really tall white dude with brown hair, and
- 13:39Speaker 1: he's got like a short haircut, but the front of
- 13:43Speaker 1: his hair is kind of longer, like a devil lock
- 13:46Speaker 1: kind of sort of. It just looks weird, and he says,
- 13:50Speaker 1: you look pretty young. How old are you? Ash looks
- 13:54Speaker 1: away and is picking at his food, like just kind
- 13:57Speaker 1: of stabbing it with a fork, moving around, and the
- 14:00Speaker 1: guy sits down across the table from them and leans
- 14:03Speaker 1: over the table a bit and says, what being a
- 14:06Speaker 1: little shy? Max is? Like, uh, hey, Garvy, this kid is.
- 14:12Speaker 1: Before he can say anymore, a black guy with a
- 14:15Speaker 1: pink mohawk kind of and a really cool face tattoo
- 14:18Speaker 1: and a white guy with a green hat put their
- 14:21Speaker 1: hands on Max's shoulders and he flinches. They're pretty tough looking,
- 14:27Speaker 1: I guess, and Garvey, who we know his name now, says,
- 14:31Speaker 1: why don't you come to my cell sometime We can
- 14:34Speaker 1: have some fun. Ash is still silently picking at his food.
- 14:39Speaker 1: It's pretty cool, and Garvey continues, we can be real
- 14:43Speaker 1: good friends, and he reaches for Ash's hand and actually
- 14:50Speaker 1: goes so far as to touch it, but then he
- 14:52Speaker 1: gets the tray of food just slammed in his fucking face,
- 14:55Speaker 1: which he totally deserves, and Ash jumps on the table
- 14:59Speaker 1: and says, get your fucking hands off me, and he
- 15:04Speaker 1: kicks Garvey right in the face and he's like down,
- 15:07Speaker 1: and his buddies like rush over to go help, and
- 15:09Speaker 1: Ash and Garvy are like on the ground now and
- 15:12Speaker 1: Ashes on top of him like they're kind of wrestling
- 15:14Speaker 1: almost and fighting, and everyone is watching and cheering them on,
- 15:19Speaker 1: you know, because prison is probably boring and this is
- 15:22Speaker 1: how you get your daily entertainment. And Max is like
- 15:25Speaker 1: trying to get through this crowd of people and he's like,
- 15:27Speaker 1: Ash stop, and he yells for the guards, and a
- 15:30Speaker 1: guard who I guess is really just not paying attention
- 15:33Speaker 1: says what's going on? And then the guards rush over
- 15:36Speaker 1: and they grab Ash and Ash's like let go of me,
- 15:39Speaker 1: damn it, and they like take him away, and Max's
- 15:42Speaker 1: panicking now and he thinks, Shirley owes me big time.
- 15:46Speaker 1: Then we cut to Ash being thrown in a dark,
- 15:50Speaker 1: unadorned cell and the guard says, think about what you
- 15:53Speaker 1: did and closes the door, and we see that Ash
- 15:56Speaker 1: is taking a fork from the messhole, which I thought
- 15:59Speaker 1: was interesting. I don't know if you get real forks
- 16:02Speaker 1: in jail, but I kind of don't think so. I
- 16:04Speaker 1: bet they're plastic, but in this case, it's a real fork,
- 16:08Speaker 1: you know, one made of some sort of metal, probably
- 16:11Speaker 1: stainless steel. Anyway, we cut to test tubes with some
- 16:15Speaker 1: red liquid in them, like a bunch of them, and
- 16:18Speaker 1: a voice says, I just don't get it, and we
- 16:21Speaker 1: see it's doctor Meredith. Oh, I haven't seen him in
- 16:23Speaker 1: a while. And this woman who might be his assistant
- 16:26Speaker 1: or his receptionist or whatever, says what and Doctor Meredith says,
- 16:31Speaker 1: the drugs Ash asked me to analyze, and he's like
- 16:34Speaker 1: looking at a computer. They're mainly lisurgic acid dithalamide, you
- 16:39Speaker 1: know LSD. Did all the rats turn out the same way?
- 16:43Speaker 1: And the woman's like yeah, Doctor Meredith says, sporadic behavior, savagery, aggression,
- 16:50Speaker 1: destructive behavior that doesn't really happen with LSD. And he
- 16:54Speaker 1: opens a curtain and we see Griffin in like the
- 16:58Speaker 1: room behind it, and he says, Griffin, I'm afraid your
- 17:02Speaker 1: little brother is caught up in some huge mess. Now
- 17:05Speaker 1: we go back to Ash in solitary confinement, and he's
- 17:08Speaker 1: laying on the floor for some reason, and he thinks,
- 17:12Speaker 1: what is banana fish a person? Some kind of code?
- 17:16Speaker 1: What the hell has Dino been up to? And he
- 17:18Speaker 1: sits up and thinks, whatever the case, And then we
- 17:22Speaker 1: cut to a very terrified looking young Ash who has
- 17:27Speaker 1: Dino's hand on his face, like on his cheek, and
- 17:31Speaker 1: Dino is like looking at him very intently, and Ash thinks,
- 17:34Speaker 1: ever since they took me captive when I was eleven,
- 17:36Speaker 1: I've been waiting for my chance. I have to go
- 17:39Speaker 1: up against him if I want to be free shit eleven.
- 17:43Speaker 1: And then we cut back to Ash now and he
- 17:45Speaker 1: presses his hands together and he thinks of Skip dying,
- 17:50Speaker 1: and he says, I'll never forgive him killing Skip like
- 17:54Speaker 1: he was just some insect. I'll never lose to him
- 17:57Speaker 1: no matter what he does, and I will survive. Okay.
- 18:00Speaker 1: So he's holding, you know, a grudge against Dino, which
- 18:04Speaker 1: sounds like it makes sense based on what we just heard.
- 18:07Speaker 1: And you know, of course Skips death, and of course
- 18:12Speaker 1: you should know if you don't already. I'm a huge
- 18:14Speaker 1: sucker for characters who were just gonna fucking survive no
- 18:17Speaker 1: matter what. So this little monologue made me a fan. Yes, okay,
- 18:23Speaker 1: now you know. So sometime later, the guard opens the
- 18:27Speaker 1: door and Ash is sitting on the floor and the
- 18:30Speaker 1: guard says, get out. Then we see Max and some
- 18:33Speaker 1: other dudes in this room and they're like painting the
- 18:35Speaker 1: walls or whatever, and the guard brings Ash in, and
- 18:39Speaker 1: the guard says, you've learned your lesson, now behave yourself.
- 18:42Speaker 1: I don't think he's learned anything, but okay. Ash walks
- 18:45Speaker 1: into the room and some guy, of course chuckles little
- 18:50Speaker 1: tomboys out guys. Max walks over and says, you don't
- 18:55Speaker 1: look too bad for someone who was just in the
- 18:57Speaker 1: repenting cell, and Ash is like, I've never repented, not
- 19:01Speaker 1: once in my life, and he just kind of walks away,
- 19:05Speaker 1: and Max thinks, what a kid. Now I wanted to see.
- 19:10Speaker 1: This is a weird translation, because I mean, in the
- 19:12Speaker 1: manga just translated to solitary confinement, so this interaction is
- 19:15Speaker 1: a little bit different. But it seems that repenting sal
- 19:19Speaker 1: was accurate, so this is an accurate translation. I just
- 19:21Speaker 1: assume that this must be what solitary confinement is called
- 19:25Speaker 1: in Japan or something, but also sure you've never repented Ash?
- 19:30Speaker 1: All right? So anyway, we next cut to Max on
- 19:35Speaker 1: the phone and like a little phone booth thing, and
- 19:39Speaker 1: he says, yeah, he caused trouble the day he got in.
- 19:42Speaker 1: The guys have their eye on him. Anyways, do something quick.
- 19:46Speaker 1: I'm counting on you, Charlie. And then we see Ash
- 19:49Speaker 1: in the prison yard, sitting alone on some bleachers. He
- 19:53Speaker 1: is in the shade and everyone else is in the sunlight,
- 19:55Speaker 1: which I thought was interesting framing because I would expect
- 19:59Speaker 1: to see Ash the sun and these kind of seedy
- 20:02Speaker 1: characters over, you know, in the dark shaded areas. So
- 20:07Speaker 1: I'm not really sure what this is getting at, but
- 20:10Speaker 1: I might be getting at something. Anyway. Ash thinks I've
- 20:14Speaker 1: got to get that drug away from Doc and Griffin.
- 20:16Speaker 1: It's too dangerous. But how the phone lines are probably tapped.
- 20:22Speaker 1: I'm sure they check letters too, And then out loud,
- 20:24Speaker 1: he says shit, and someone that we can't see says hey.
- 20:30Speaker 1: Ash looks up and it's Garvey and friends. Fuck. Garvey says,
- 20:37Speaker 1: I had fun the other day, boy. Then we cut
- 20:40Speaker 1: to Max now looking around the yard for Ash, and
- 20:43Speaker 1: he's like, where did that kid go off to and
- 20:46Speaker 1: there are two guys like sitting on some bleachers, and
- 20:48Speaker 1: he turned to them and he says, have you seen Ash?
- 20:51Speaker 1: And the first guy's like no, and the second guy
- 20:53Speaker 1: says I saw him. And Max is like, really where
- 20:57Speaker 1: and the guy says it's probably too late though he
- 21:00Speaker 1: went to the library with Garvey and his guys. What
- 21:05Speaker 1: And Max like gasps. Then we cut to a low
- 21:10Speaker 1: shot of some stairs, so we're like kind of at
- 21:12Speaker 1: the bottom of the stairs and we see some dudes
- 21:14Speaker 1: coming around the corner at the top of the stairs,
- 21:16Speaker 1: and it's kind of a not very detailed image, so
- 21:19Speaker 1: it took me a second to figure out who this was.
- 21:21Speaker 1: But it's Garvey and his crew and Garvey laughs and
- 21:25Speaker 1: is like that was fun. Huh. So they start to
- 21:30Speaker 1: walk down the stairs and one of his crew guys says,
- 21:35Speaker 1: but weren't you supposed to make him talk? Garvey stops
- 21:39Speaker 1: and turns back and says that can wait. I've got time.
- 21:44Speaker 1: Max then gets to the bottom of the stairs and
- 21:46Speaker 1: he's out of breath, and Garvey's like, hey, Max, what's
- 21:50Speaker 1: the hurry? And Max like, where's Ash? And Garvey, who
- 21:54Speaker 1: is walking down the stairs again kind of chuckles, and
- 21:57Speaker 1: he says he knows how to survive in this world.
- 22:01Speaker 1: Max says, what is that supposed to mean? And Garvey's like,
- 22:06Speaker 1: he was actually pretty obedient. I thought he'd at least
- 22:09Speaker 1: put up a fight. Shits. I think Max is too late,
- 22:16Speaker 1: And Garvey and his crew walk past Max, and Max
- 22:20Speaker 1: is like, that is not what I want to hear,
- 22:23Speaker 1: and he runs up the stairs and he's like running
- 22:25Speaker 1: through the library looking for Ash and calling out to him.
- 22:29Speaker 1: So Max finally comes around a corner and he sees
- 22:33Speaker 1: Ash and Ashes lying on the floor, you know, completely
- 22:39Speaker 1: naked except for his jumpsuit which is you know, down
- 22:42Speaker 1: around his ankles. His hands are tied and he is
- 22:48Speaker 1: pretty beaten and scraped up. Yeah, he was too late,
- 22:54Speaker 1: So I think we can just pause there for a
- 22:57Speaker 1: second and talk about some things. Yeah. I wasn't expecting
- 23:03Speaker 1: gang rape in episode three, like at all, or really
- 23:07Speaker 1: any episode, to be honest with you, I going into
- 23:12Speaker 1: this wholeheartedly expected Max to make it in time or
- 23:16Speaker 1: Ash to be able to fight them off. So this
- 23:20Speaker 1: was pretty shocking to me. I mean, it's gonna be
- 23:25Speaker 1: shocking anyway no matter what my expectation. But still in
- 23:30Speaker 1: my experience with anime, of course, they don't all fit this,
- 23:34Speaker 1: but my general experience, excluding things like Redo a Healer,
- 23:39Speaker 1: is that this doesn't normally happen to a main character
- 23:42Speaker 1: where there is a threat of sexual assault and it
- 23:48Speaker 1: actually happens, and you know, normally somebody is there in
- 23:53Speaker 1: time to save them or they are able to get
- 23:58Speaker 1: out of it themselves. I don't know. And even then
- 24:02Speaker 1: I see a lot more of kind of secondary characters
- 24:07Speaker 1: in this situation. I'm kind of thinking of sort of
- 24:10Speaker 1: art online and that kind of stuff where there's a
- 24:13Speaker 1: threat but it's it's not really real, you know. So yeah,
- 24:20Speaker 1: I just like didn't see this coming at all. I
- 24:27Speaker 1: don't know. We're obviously not watching something that is gonna
- 24:33Speaker 1: play it's safe with assaults, So yeah, I don't know
- 24:38Speaker 1: how you feel about that. But on the topic of
- 24:42Speaker 1: being saved and having other characters in a story come
- 24:47Speaker 1: to your rescue when you're faced with possibly incredibly traumatic shit,
- 24:53Speaker 1: I don't know if this is going to go down
- 24:54Speaker 1: the way that you're used to, So you may just
- 24:57Speaker 1: want to keep an eye on how a often ash
- 25:01Speaker 1: has to take care of himself because no one is
- 25:04Speaker 1: coming to help, or even if they are, they're going
- 25:08Speaker 1: to be way too late. Now I'm a little bit sad,
- 25:14Speaker 1: and I'm sure that's something i'll touch on again later,
- 25:17Speaker 1: but yeah, thanks for taking this minute with me, and
- 25:22Speaker 1: let's get back to it. So we cut to a
- 25:26Speaker 1: doctor putting a little tiny bandage on Ash's arm, and
- 25:32Speaker 1: we're in the infirmary and Ash is like sitting in
- 25:34Speaker 1: a bed and the doctor says he isn't banged up
- 25:38Speaker 1: that badly, nothing to worry about, Okay, I gave you
- 25:41Speaker 1: a shot of antibiotics. Just rest here today. And Ash says,
- 25:46Speaker 1: my head's killing me. Do you have any pain killers?
- 25:50Speaker 1: My doctor's like, your head, sure, whatever, your highness. And
- 25:55Speaker 1: Ash says, I can't swallow powders or tablets because I
- 25:59Speaker 1: really hate the taste though, And the doctor's like, so
- 26:05Speaker 1: high and mighty eh, how about this? And he hands
- 26:08Speaker 1: out one of those little capsules and Ash takes it
- 26:10Speaker 1: and thanks him. The doctor hands him a glass of
- 26:13Speaker 1: water and says, drink up. Gotta make sure you don't
- 26:15Speaker 1: stock up on meds and get high. I don't think
- 26:18Speaker 1: you can get high on this, but whatever. Ash's like, okay, sure,
- 26:22Speaker 1: and he puts the pill in his mouth and he
- 26:23Speaker 1: drinks my doctor's like at a boy, And then we
- 26:28Speaker 1: see that Ash is actually still holding the capsule behind
- 26:31Speaker 1: his back. So anyway, the doctor leaves, maybe it's the
- 26:36Speaker 1: end of his shift or something, and Max is like,
- 26:39Speaker 1: you're really in for it now. Garvey's spreading false rumors
- 26:42Speaker 1: that you didn't put up a fight, and Ash is like,
- 26:45Speaker 1: I was outnumbered. They could have killed me. Max says, well, yeah,
- 26:50Speaker 1: but anyway, are you hungry? And we see that Max
- 26:55Speaker 1: has brought a tray of like cafeteria food and it
- 26:59Speaker 1: looks like it's like some sort of meat and mashed
- 27:02Speaker 1: potatoes and mixed vegetables, and there's like a slice of
- 27:05Speaker 1: bread and some butter, and there's also a banana. And
- 27:08Speaker 1: Max laughs and he's like, I bet you don't even
- 27:10Speaker 1: want to see a banana right now. I'll eat that
- 27:13Speaker 1: for you. And he goes to pick up the banana
- 27:16Speaker 1: and Ash stabs it with his fork, and Max like
- 27:20Speaker 1: backs away and he's like, I'm just kidding, it's all yours.
- 27:24Speaker 1: Ash takes a bite of the banana and kind of
- 27:27Speaker 1: to himself, just says banana fish, and Max's eyes widen
- 27:32Speaker 1: and he says, what did you just say? And he
- 27:35Speaker 1: thinks of Griffin and says, did you say banana fish?
- 27:39Speaker 1: How do you know that? Ash is like, why are
- 27:43Speaker 1: you so worked up? It's just a fish from a
- 27:45Speaker 1: Salinger novel. Max says, don't lie. You know something, don't you.
- 27:51Speaker 1: Ash is silent and not looking at him, and Max says,
- 27:54Speaker 1: you gotta tell me. Do you know where he is?
- 27:57Speaker 1: There's like a over the bed like tray table and
- 28:01Speaker 1: Max is just leaning further and further over it towards
- 28:04Speaker 1: Ash and he says, is that why Charlie has me
- 28:07Speaker 1: guarding you? You fucking idiot? Max? And Ash says Charlie,
- 28:13Speaker 1: so you And Max cuts him off and slams his
- 28:16Speaker 1: fist on the table and says answer me. And Ash says,
- 28:20Speaker 1: you asked if I knew where he was? So banana
- 28:24Speaker 1: Fish is a person, and Max says, yeah, it's taken
- 28:28Speaker 1: me ten years to figure out that. Much later, we
- 28:33Speaker 1: are back in the cell with both of them. I
- 28:35Speaker 1: guess Ash got to leave. He's okay enough, I guess,
- 28:39Speaker 1: and Max says the guy who wrote the article was
- 28:42Speaker 1: a military intelligence officer in Baghdad from two thousand and
- 28:45Speaker 1: five to two thousand and seven. According to him, it's
- 28:48Speaker 1: unclear whether Banana Fish is a person or an organization,
- 28:51Speaker 1: but it's connected with a certain drug trafficking route. And Ash,
- 28:55Speaker 1: who is looking at some like I guess it's a
- 28:57Speaker 1: notebook or something, says, but if it's been around that long,
- 29:02Speaker 1: how come there are no rumors. I've never heard of it?
- 29:05Speaker 1: And Max says that's just it. His article said the
- 29:08Speaker 1: rumors just stopped after two thousand and seven. He finally
- 29:12Speaker 1: got a lead in LA this year, and As says
- 29:15Speaker 1: where's he now? Max is like, his picture and profile
- 29:19Speaker 1: are on the last page. After he got out of
- 29:21Speaker 1: the military, he became a freelance writer. Ash flips to
- 29:25Speaker 1: the back page and gasps Max doesn't really notice this,
- 29:29Speaker 1: and he continues, I'm gonna go see him when I
- 29:31Speaker 1: get out. Ash is like, no, you won't. Max looks up,
- 29:37Speaker 1: super confused, and Ash says, he died in front of
- 29:41Speaker 1: my eyes. Oh my god. It's the guy for episode
- 29:44Speaker 1: one who was killed and gave Ash the drug. Max
- 29:49Speaker 1: is like what do you mean? And Ash says, I
- 29:52Speaker 1: guess he'd gotten too close without realizing it. Max is like, unbelievable,
- 29:56Speaker 1: and he puts his hand on his face, and Ash says,
- 30:00Speaker 1: why are you trying to find banana fish? Anyways? Max
- 30:04Speaker 1: is like, when I was in Iraq over a decade ago,
- 30:07Speaker 1: I had this friend and he got seriously messed up
- 30:10Speaker 1: by some bad drug. He was a great guy, liked poetry,
- 30:13Speaker 1: even wrote some himself. His last words were banana and
- 30:17Speaker 1: Ash cuts him off and says what's his name? And
- 30:20Speaker 1: Max is like what? Nash says, your friend's name? What
- 30:25Speaker 1: is it? Max says, Griffin Callen Rees. We called him
- 30:29Speaker 1: Griff and Ash cuts him off and says you must
- 30:32Speaker 1: be Max green Read and Max is like, how do
- 30:36Speaker 1: you know my real name? Ash stands and walks over
- 30:40Speaker 1: to the bars and puts his hands on them, and
- 30:44Speaker 1: he's looking out of the cell at this point, and
- 30:46Speaker 1: he says, I have a real name too, It's Oslon
- 30:50Speaker 1: Oslon Callan Rees. And Max is like, you're Griff's little brother, Oslon.
- 30:57Speaker 1: Who'd have thought I'd meet you here? But man, you
- 31:00Speaker 1: two are nothing alike. Your brother was a quiet poet.
- 31:04Speaker 1: Ash is still looking outside and he says, yeah, he
- 31:08Speaker 1: liked to write. He wrote me letters often, so I
- 31:11Speaker 1: know a lot about you. Max is like, yeah, Griff
- 31:15Speaker 1: and I we and Ash turns and says you shot
- 31:19Speaker 1: him and Max is like what and Ash says, and
- 31:25Speaker 1: you left him there to die. Max stands and he's like,
- 31:29Speaker 1: that's not how it was. He shot. I didn't have
- 31:32Speaker 1: a choice. Griff was high on some drug and he
- 31:34Speaker 1: tried to kill us all. Ash leans back against the
- 31:38Speaker 1: bars and he says he trusted you. He wrote about
- 31:42Speaker 1: you a lot, said you were his only friends. Max's
- 31:47Speaker 1: face falls and Ash continues, he still can't use his legs,
- 31:52Speaker 1: but you didn't have a choice. Max is shocked, and
- 31:57Speaker 1: he says Griff's still alive, and he walks towards Ash
- 32:00Speaker 1: and says, where is he. I have to see him.
- 32:03Speaker 1: Ash grips the bars tightly and says, even if you did,
- 32:06Speaker 1: he wouldn't recognize you, and he slams his fist against
- 32:09Speaker 1: the bars. He doesn't even recognize his own brother. You
- 32:12Speaker 1: said that drug messed up his brain, yet you left
- 32:14Speaker 1: him there to die, and Max is like, that's not true.
- 32:18Speaker 1: He was sent back home after that. I looked everywhere
- 32:20Speaker 1: for him, and the guard is like, keep it down.
- 32:24Speaker 1: You two go to sleep, and he walks away. Max
- 32:28Speaker 1: turns away from my Ash and says yeah, let's let's
- 32:31Speaker 1: get some sleep, and Ash says, when I get out,
- 32:36Speaker 1: Max stops. He continues, I'm going to kill you shit,
- 32:43Speaker 1: good night, Max. I liked your columns. Fuck Ash, geez.
- 32:49Speaker 1: Max in bed lightly punches a picture of him and
- 32:54Speaker 1: his Iraq buddies that he has on the wall and thinks,
- 32:58Speaker 1: damn it, why now after all this time? It's morning now,
- 33:04Speaker 1: and we hear Charlie say you quit? What do you mean?
- 33:09Speaker 1: And we see that he's talking to Max in the
- 33:12Speaker 1: visitation room and he continues, you can't quit now, what's
- 33:16Speaker 1: going on? Max looks down and then we go to
- 33:20Speaker 1: another table where Ash, AG and Shunichi are and Ash says,
- 33:25Speaker 1: thanks for coming, ag, Ah, he invited him. Ag says,
- 33:30Speaker 1: I was glad to hear you wanted to see me. Aw.
- 33:34Speaker 1: He looks down and then continues, after what happened with
- 33:39Speaker 1: Skip because of me. Ash gets up and puts his
- 33:42Speaker 1: arm around Ag, and AG looks kind of shocked me too, AG,
- 33:46Speaker 1: and Ash says, it's not your fault. Japanese people think
- 33:50Speaker 1: so strangely, and AG's like, you think. So. Shunichi is
- 33:54Speaker 1: looking on at this and he thinks it's kind of
- 33:56Speaker 1: hard to tell who's older. Ash stands up and says,
- 34:01Speaker 1: I hear you're still taking pictures. How are my guys.
- 34:04Speaker 1: Shunichi's like, actually, it's too dangerous for us to get close,
- 34:09Speaker 1: and Agie says it seems like Arthur's leading the gang now,
- 34:13Speaker 1: so you know how it is. Ash kind of pounds
- 34:16Speaker 1: his fist on the table and says that coward. Then
- 34:21Speaker 1: we cut back to Charlie and Max, and Charlie says, okay,
- 34:25Speaker 1: I say, and Max is like I might have been
- 34:28Speaker 1: chasing banana fish out of guilt, and he puts his
- 34:31Speaker 1: hand on his head, but that's all over now, and
- 34:34Speaker 1: Charlie says, but you've been working on this for ten years.
- 34:39Speaker 1: Max just kind of shrugs, and Charlie's like okay, I'll
- 34:43Speaker 1: let the captain know. He stands and then walks over
- 34:46Speaker 1: to Ag and Shunci and Ash and he says, eBay, age,
- 34:52Speaker 1: time to go. AGI's like okay. So they all stand
- 34:57Speaker 1: and they are walking to the exits and Ash says,
- 35:01Speaker 1: you take care, okay, don't worry, you'll be out soon.
- 35:05Speaker 1: Ag and Ash stop and Ash gets closer to Ag
- 35:09Speaker 1: and is like, yeah, I'm glad you came today. He
- 35:14Speaker 1: then puts his hand on the back of AG's head
- 35:18Speaker 1: and leans in slightly, and AG's like, uh yeah, and
- 35:24Speaker 1: he looks at Ash's hand as it caresses his hair,
- 35:32Speaker 1: and Ash slides his hand onto AG's cheek, and AG
- 35:37Speaker 1: is flustered and blushing slightly at this point and obviously
- 35:43Speaker 1: pretty uncomfortable, which is totally understandable. And Ash says, next time,
- 35:49Speaker 1: come alone, got it? And AG's like why? And Ash
- 35:55Speaker 1: leans in and Ag says what, and Ash just fucking kisses,
- 36:01Speaker 1: super surprised Ag. That's assualt Ash, you can't you can't
- 36:07Speaker 1: just kiss him. Charlie and Shunichi look on in total shock.
- 36:14Speaker 1: And this kiss is not just like a fast kiss.
- 36:18Speaker 1: It has tongue and it lasts for like a full
- 36:22Speaker 1: eight seconds because I counted them. It's actually really well animated.
- 36:30Speaker 1: And I couldn't find out who did it, guys, and
- 36:32Speaker 1: I'm sorry. And at the very end, when they're still kissing,
- 36:37Speaker 1: Ag likes looks super surprised for a second, and then
- 36:41Speaker 1: Ash pulls back slightly and he opens his eyes and
- 36:46Speaker 1: he stares at Ag like really intensely, and they both
- 36:52Speaker 1: stare at each other for a second in a way
- 36:54Speaker 1: that doesn't seem to match the kiss, like Ag no
- 36:57Speaker 1: longer looks flustered or surprise, and then I guess Ash
- 37:02Speaker 1: pulls fully back and he says later, sweetie, and he
- 37:07Speaker 1: slaps Age's ass and AG jumps and he says bye,
- 37:13Speaker 1: and he winks and like walks off, waving, and Shichi's
- 37:19Speaker 1: just like you okagehn And Ag puts his hand over
- 37:24Speaker 1: his mouth and he's blushing again, and he's like, I
- 37:27Speaker 1: have to go to the bathroom and he runs off.
- 37:30Speaker 1: Shoonici sighs and he's like that might have been his
- 37:34Speaker 1: first kiss ever. Oh no, So now we cut to
- 37:39Speaker 1: the bathroom and Ag is in a stall and he
- 37:43Speaker 1: puts his hand over his mouth and he spits out
- 37:46Speaker 1: the capsule. Oh that makes so much sense. I totally
- 37:51Speaker 1: didn't know that was coming for some reason. So happy
- 37:55Speaker 1: to see that there was a plan there. Anyway, AG
- 37:59Speaker 1: is looking at the caps and he thinks something's inside.
- 38:02Speaker 1: He opens it and he pulls out this tiny rolled
- 38:05Speaker 1: up piece of paper and he reads it and we hear,
- 38:08Speaker 1: you know, Ash's voice reading it. So it says, Ag,
- 38:12Speaker 1: I know this is dangerous, but I need you to
- 38:13Speaker 1: do something. Go to the shop called Chang Dai in
- 38:16Speaker 1: Chinatown and meet short or long just say ASH sent you,
- 38:21Speaker 1: And then we're kind of like seeing them leave and
- 38:24Speaker 1: AG's in like the car as they're going back to
- 38:26Speaker 1: I guess the hotel or something, and the note continues,
- 38:30Speaker 1: tell him to get what I gave to doctor Meredith
- 38:32Speaker 1: and hide it somewhere safe. Then Agi is in the
- 38:35Speaker 1: hotel room looking at the note, sitting on the bed,
- 38:38Speaker 1: and the note continues, be careful, don't let anyone know
- 38:42Speaker 1: about this. At this point, Agi stands and he walks
- 38:45Speaker 1: over to Shunichi, who's in another room, and says, I'm
- 38:48Speaker 1: going out for a bit. Sniji's like okay, but be safe.
- 38:53Speaker 1: Age says, I will, and thanks forgive me. He bass
- 38:56Speaker 1: on and he turns to leave, and SI's like oh,
- 39:00Speaker 1: and Agi jumps and Shinigi says, could you grab me
- 39:03Speaker 1: a Sunday on your way back? And Age's like okay, sure,
- 39:09Speaker 1: So AG's gonna do this, huh. Anyway, we cut to
- 39:13Speaker 1: the mansion and Dino, that guy that I don't know
- 39:16Speaker 1: what his name is, and Arthur are in a room
- 39:18Speaker 1: and Dino says an Asian kid, and the guy's like, yeah,
- 39:23Speaker 1: he came to see Ash with the detective and Arthur's
- 39:26Speaker 1: like hmm, and Diino says, you know who he is,
- 39:30Speaker 1: and Arthur's like, Ash wouldn't just meet with someone to
- 39:33Speaker 1: just chat, Papadino, let me handle this. Garby's taking his
- 39:37Speaker 1: time right then, in the place of the Lynx, I'll
- 39:40Speaker 1: bring you a cute Japanese cat oh fuck. Then we
- 39:44Speaker 1: cuts to the cute Japanese cat agi putting some cute
- 39:48Speaker 1: purple glasses on, and he thinks Chinatown, huh. And he's
- 39:54Speaker 1: walking through Chinatown in the sharpest pink track jacket with
- 39:59Speaker 1: a black tank top and these crazy leaf print pants.
- 40:04Speaker 1: But I don't know, maybe he thinks he is incognito,
- 40:07Speaker 1: and he's like somehow blending in, but he looks loud,
- 40:11Speaker 1: like I mean, I think he looks great, but not
- 40:15Speaker 1: right for like New York City. Anyway, He's thinking, I
- 40:20Speaker 1: heard it's dangerous around here, and he looks around and thinks,
- 40:23Speaker 1: I can't chicken out now. He is now like looking
- 40:26Speaker 1: at a map on his phone and he's like, that's weird.
- 40:29Speaker 1: It should be around here. He sees two guys sitting
- 40:33Speaker 1: on a stoop and he's like, I'm looking for a
- 40:35Speaker 1: place called chung Dai and the guy stand up and
- 40:39Speaker 1: walk over to him, and one of the guys says,
- 40:41Speaker 1: who the hell are you? What business you got there?
- 40:44Speaker 1: And he's like I and he starts to kind of
- 40:48Speaker 1: back away, and we kind of see his legs are
- 40:50Speaker 1: shaking a little, and he's like, I just uh, I'm
- 40:53Speaker 1: looking for shorter long ash Link sent me. And the
- 40:56Speaker 1: first guy's like Ash did, and the other guy said,
- 41:00Speaker 1: Shorten's not here. Arthur's men are trying to hunt him down.
- 41:03Speaker 1: The first guy's like, Chang Di is like right around
- 41:06Speaker 1: the corner by the barber shop, and he points up
- 41:08Speaker 1: the street and Age's like thanks, and we cut to
- 41:13Speaker 1: Ag walking into chang Dai. It's pretty empty. It's like
- 41:17Speaker 1: a small Chinese food place, and he looks around and
- 41:22Speaker 1: out of nowhere, this woman pops up in is like
- 41:24Speaker 1: table for one, and Agy jumps and he's like huh
- 41:27Speaker 1: uh yeah. The woman says, sit wherever you want and
- 41:31Speaker 1: just kind of walks off, and Agi takes off his sunglasses,
- 41:35Speaker 1: sits down and sighs and thinks I didn't come here
- 41:40Speaker 1: to eat. But and then this dude with glasses and
- 41:44Speaker 1: this like very stereotypical Chinese garb like pops up from
- 41:48Speaker 1: literally out of nowhere with a bowl and he startles
- 41:53Speaker 1: the shit out of Ag and he says, here, this
- 41:57Speaker 1: is for you. It's free, and he sits down the table.
- 42:00Speaker 1: He says, I'm Chang, this is my restaurant. You here
- 42:03Speaker 1: to ask something, my boy, And AG says, I'm looking
- 42:07Speaker 1: for Shorter Wong. There's something important I have to tell him.
- 42:12Speaker 1: And we get a quick look over Age's shoulder with
- 42:16Speaker 1: an out of focused shot of some dude sitting behind
- 42:19Speaker 1: him a little bit, and then a nice shot of
- 42:22Speaker 1: the bowl containing what looks like wanton soup with block choi,
- 42:25Speaker 1: which I really want right now, thanks, And I guess
- 42:28Speaker 1: his name is Chang, And Chang says, well, that's too bad.
- 42:33Speaker 1: He's not here now. No one knows where he is.
- 42:36Speaker 1: AG's like, I see, then, do you know of a
- 42:39Speaker 1: doctor Meredith? And that guy from the other table like
- 42:43Speaker 1: immediately picks up his phone and starts texting or calling someone.
- 42:47Speaker 1: That's not good. Then we cut to Ag leaving the
- 42:50Speaker 1: restaurant and it's dark out now, so maybe it was
- 42:52Speaker 1: already kind of late in the day, and Age's like,
- 42:55Speaker 1: I thought i'd at least find something Ash will be
- 42:59Speaker 1: so let down. I can't let him down. I'll go
- 43:04Speaker 1: find the doctor myself. Back at jail, Max is writing
- 43:09Speaker 1: something at like a small desk in the cell. His
- 43:13Speaker 1: faces to the wall, so his back is to the
- 43:15Speaker 1: open area of the cell, and he says, what are
- 43:20Speaker 1: you staring at? And we see that Ash is standing
- 43:24Speaker 1: there just staring at him, and Max turns and says
- 43:31Speaker 1: say something. If you hate me, just say it, and
- 43:35Speaker 1: then he stands and he's like are you listening. Ash
- 43:38Speaker 1: just stares at him. Max is starting to look kind
- 43:43Speaker 1: of nervous and he's like what and Ash just continues
- 43:47Speaker 1: to stare at him, and Max is like, don't look
- 43:50Speaker 1: at me like that. And he thinks of Griffin and
- 43:53Speaker 1: he covers his face and he's like stop it. Don't
- 43:55Speaker 1: look at me with your brother's eyes. And at this
- 43:58Speaker 1: point something's going on with his brain and he kind
- 44:00Speaker 1: of sees Ash as Griffin and there's like a greeny
- 44:04Speaker 1: green filter on this, like his brain is like not
- 44:07Speaker 1: processing this correctly. And he grabs Ash and he throws
- 44:11Speaker 1: him on the bed and he gets like over him
- 44:14Speaker 1: and he strangles him. Fuck. Then people from other cells
- 44:20Speaker 1: are like, shut up, Lobo, what the hell's going on?
- 44:23Speaker 1: And at this point Max snaps out of it and
- 44:27Speaker 1: he starts to release his grip on Ash's neck, and
- 44:29Speaker 1: Ash just looks like terrified, and Max says, I'm sorry,
- 44:38Speaker 1: I didn't mean to and he gets off of him
- 44:40Speaker 1: and says, I'll ask the guard to change cells. It'll
- 44:44Speaker 1: be better for both of us. At this point, Ash
- 44:47Speaker 1: sits up and Max is covering his face with his
- 44:51Speaker 1: hand and he's like, if you want to kill me,
- 44:54Speaker 1: go ahead, I've had enough. Good night, Ash. We cut
- 45:00Speaker 1: back to Chinatown and Ag is walking up a poorly
- 45:05Speaker 1: lit stairwell and he knocks on a door at the
- 45:07Speaker 1: top of the stairs and then he opens it and
- 45:10Speaker 1: he says, excuse me, I'd like to ask you, and
- 45:15Speaker 1: there's some sort of shuffling sound and then AG's glasses
- 45:19Speaker 1: drop to the floor and it's Arthur and he is
- 45:23Speaker 1: kind of holding Ag by the face, like by the
- 45:27Speaker 1: chin I guess, and he says, I've been waiting for you,
- 45:31Speaker 1: Samurai boy. And then we get the title card across
- 45:35Speaker 1: the river and through the trees, and then we go
- 45:37Speaker 1: to the ending and that's the end of the episode. Yeah,
- 45:42Speaker 1: so closing thoughts, Yeah, that was an episode, right, that
- 45:46Speaker 1: was one of the episodes of all time. Yeah, it
- 45:54Speaker 1: pains me to tell you that I really liked that episode. Yeah,
- 46:00Speaker 1: so there are some things that we kind of learned
- 46:03Speaker 1: in this episode that I kind of wanted to talk about.
- 46:06Speaker 1: I guess what I can say first is why the
- 46:09Speaker 1: hell was ash on the street when he was eleven
- 46:12Speaker 1: years old? Like, we don't know what his family situation
- 46:16Speaker 1: is like at this point, but that's like super young
- 46:21Speaker 1: to be homeless, like super young. And I assume that
- 46:29Speaker 1: Dino taking him off the streets is not a good thing,
- 46:33Speaker 1: especially because of what we have seen of his life
- 46:36Speaker 1: so far and his past. But I wanted to quickly
- 46:41Speaker 1: point out something happened in episode one where remember that
- 46:46Speaker 1: first time that we saw Dino when Ash like went
- 46:49Speaker 1: to him and was like, hey, you used my guys
- 46:52Speaker 1: to kill someone, and Dino says that he took ash
- 46:57Speaker 1: In off the streets like it was a good thing.
- 47:00Speaker 1: So it seems like maybe that's not the case. It
- 47:03Speaker 1: also seems like there is a disconnect in their views
- 47:07Speaker 1: of what would be a good thing. So yeah, of course,
- 47:12Speaker 1: as of this moment, Yeah, we don't really know what
- 47:15Speaker 1: happened after that is there a chance that he adopted him.
- 47:19Speaker 1: I wish I hadn't said that. I don't know, right,
- 47:23Speaker 1: it could be anything. You know, sometimes kids just don't
- 47:26Speaker 1: like their parents, right or something. Yeah, sure, sure, well
- 47:32Speaker 1: I'm sure we'll come back to that because it's a theme.
- 47:36Speaker 1: But uh yeah, it's a little bit worrisome, especially because
- 47:41Speaker 1: of how terrified little tiny Ash looked and his eyes
- 47:45Speaker 1: were like so big, and his eyes are so like
- 47:50Speaker 1: narrow and small now and in anime world, that makes
- 47:53Speaker 1: me feel like his life has been really, really tough.
- 47:58Speaker 1: So but yeah, I mean, this was a pretty intense episode.
- 48:02Speaker 1: So it hasn't been very long, I don't think, but
- 48:05Speaker 1: it has been a little while on the anime is
- 48:08Speaker 1: in particular not very good at getting us to understand
- 48:12Speaker 1: how long things have taken. Like he was in solitary
- 48:14Speaker 1: confinement for three days, I think, but we didn't get
- 48:17Speaker 1: to hear that, which I thought was weird. But Ash's
- 48:20Speaker 1: time in prison has like been real, real bad. I mean,
- 48:24Speaker 1: we already talked about a lot of it, so we
- 48:26Speaker 1: don't have to talk about it again. But you know,
- 48:30Speaker 1: at least he got to kiss sweet sweet age, I mean,
- 48:34Speaker 1: past that capsule with the note in it to him.
- 48:39Speaker 1: At least that worked to help. I wanted to point
- 48:42Speaker 1: out a couple of changes, especially to the scene where
- 48:45Speaker 1: Ash was in the infirmary. The anime really tones down
- 48:50Speaker 1: how mean everyone is to Ash, Like it doesn't tone
- 48:55Speaker 1: down the sexual stuff, but there's just kind of an
- 48:58Speaker 1: element of cruelty to the way the Ash is treated
- 49:01Speaker 1: by a lot of people, and it's very much present
- 49:05Speaker 1: in the way that the doctor talks to him after
- 49:08Speaker 1: this incident. You've got to remember this part of the
- 49:10Speaker 1: manga takes place in nineteen eighty five, so there's a
- 49:13Speaker 1: real threat of him contracting HIV from these situations, and
- 49:18Speaker 1: it's in there, and the doctor very flippantly talks about it,
- 49:22Speaker 1: and he's also like, hey, look on the bright side,
- 49:25Speaker 1: at least he can't get pregnant, like that is an
- 49:28Speaker 1: upside to all of this. So it's just, yeah, it's rough,
- 49:34Speaker 1: and like there's just not a lot of empathy taking
- 49:38Speaker 1: place towards him, or sympathy or really consoling happening, Like
- 49:45Speaker 1: he just went through probably a traumatic experience, and we're
- 49:49Speaker 1: getting like nothing from the doctor and we're barely getting
- 49:51Speaker 1: anything from Max with his joke about bananas, which yeah,
- 49:56Speaker 1: I mean, I get it, but like you know, it's
- 50:01Speaker 1: it kind of sucks. So I don't know, man, I
- 50:04Speaker 1: don't know why you are listening to me explain this
- 50:08Speaker 1: honestly right now, But I just did. Also super cool
- 50:14Speaker 1: that Age's on board and he is going to get
- 50:17Speaker 1: himself in trouble. I guess he almost didn't. I mean,
- 50:23Speaker 1: it seems as though he was followed, so he didn't
- 50:26Speaker 1: really have much of a chance to get over there
- 50:28Speaker 1: without Arthur finding out. But I got to respect him
- 50:33Speaker 1: for giving it a shot and looking so cool while
- 50:37Speaker 1: he did. So that's that's really all I got, guys. Anyway,
- 50:43Speaker 1: I'm gonna I'm gonna go now and think about what
- 50:47Speaker 1: I've done, and I hope you have a really good
- 50:51Speaker 1: whatever later weebs if you come back,
