- 0:07Speaker 1: Acts podcast. I'm one of the hosts, Peanut Tillman, and
- 0:11Speaker 1: as always, I got my homeboy with me. First office dude.
- 0:15Speaker 1: He's actually younger than me, but he looks older than
- 0:18Speaker 1: my guy, my homie Roman, second term Barack Obama Harper.
- 0:26Speaker 1: You know what, Thank you Peanut for that great introduction.
- 0:29Speaker 1: The best thing about today's guest is that I know
- 0:32Speaker 1: I look old because of my gray hair and everything
- 0:34Speaker 1: like that, but this brother looks older than me. I'm
- 0:38Speaker 1: telling you, dogs, you look Isaac Hayes old so roma
- 0:47Speaker 1: you can't get down with brother? Yeah, I don't know.
- 0:51Speaker 1: First of all, here we go. Let me introduce you first,
- 0:53Speaker 1: Let me give me a couple of your accolades. Let
- 0:55Speaker 1: me let me give you your flowers, real red office resume,
- 0:58Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, yeah, Here we go. Here we go. So
- 1:00Speaker 1: my boy, first round draft pick to the Northern Saints
- 1:04Speaker 1: in two thousand and nine, first dB taken what was
- 1:09Speaker 1: it fifteen overall, fourteenth overall from the Ohio State University.
- 1:16Speaker 1: My boy, my dog Omega, sci Fire's Finest. Malcolm Jenkins,
- 1:22Speaker 1: thirteen year NFL VET, two times Super Bowl champion. He
- 1:26Speaker 1: won Super Bowl forty four with none better than myself
- 1:30Speaker 1: and then a host of other great Saints players won
- 1:32Speaker 1: Super Bowl fifty two with the Eagles in two eighteen.
- 1:36Speaker 1: He is the co founder of the Players Coalition with
- 1:39Speaker 1: the NFL. He's a businessman, he's a deboneer. This guy
- 1:43Speaker 1: does it all. He's a philanthropist, a Harvard Fellow, an activist,
- 1:48Speaker 1: and so on and so forth. I can keep going to.
- 1:52Speaker 1: All I do is learn from this guy every time
- 1:53Speaker 1: I see each other. And now that he's retired, we're
- 1:56Speaker 1: actually a lot cool. We got so much more in
- 1:58Speaker 1: common now. Malcolm Jenkins walked through the podcast. Bro, I
- 2:00Speaker 1: appreciate you guys having me big Jack. What's going on? Balls?
- 2:03Speaker 1: You look like you at your offices right now? Man?
- 2:06Speaker 1: Where you at? No, I'm actually at Parkway Parkway Northwest
- 2:09Speaker 1: High School in Philadelphia. I just got done um talking
- 2:12Speaker 1: to him. We just launched this financial literacy program here
- 2:16Speaker 1: through my foundation. So uh, y'all are catching me in transition. Man,
- 2:20Speaker 1: I'm always always busy. See this the school bell right there?
- 2:27Speaker 1: That was perfect? Are you having lunch up there? You know?
- 2:31Speaker 1: Everybody know the cafeteria lady? All we got is mash
- 2:34Speaker 1: potatoes and comb sonna. I used to take some. My
- 2:39Speaker 1: parents just getting me like uh, I was, I was
- 2:42Speaker 1: balling to I think they gave me like four dollars
- 2:44Speaker 1: for lunch and I would spend three three dollars, I'll
- 2:48Speaker 1: get cookies and the other I guess some French fries.
- 2:51Speaker 1: That was. That was all I ate in high school.
- 2:52Speaker 1: Three cookies fries. And is it a private school or
- 2:56Speaker 1: public school? Because public school probably a little bit public
- 2:59Speaker 1: school school early like from pre k to second grade,
- 3:06Speaker 1: it was there's an all black was an all black
- 3:08Speaker 1: private school called Chad School in Newark, New Jersey. Like
- 3:13Speaker 1: imagine Wakanda University. Like that's what it was. That's what
- 3:18Speaker 1: it was. And it was like it was awesome to
- 3:21Speaker 1: talk to our we wouldn't say like miss or missus.
- 3:24Speaker 1: It'd be brother Johnson or a sister, sister Penny. That's
- 3:29Speaker 1: what they was, being taught black national anthem every morning. Yeah,
- 3:34Speaker 1: it was awesome. That was the only private school I've
- 3:36Speaker 1: been to. Everything else is public. So you just now
- 3:39Speaker 1: you just came from somewhere, right, you just I know,
- 3:42Speaker 1: you just came from a vacation, right, and you were
- 3:44Speaker 1: in Europe, travel a couple of plays. Yeah, yeah, whatevlication.
- 3:47Speaker 1: I was just at the One of the things I've
- 3:49Speaker 1: been trying to do to stay away from the game
- 3:51Speaker 1: is like find some other hobbies. And art is something
- 3:54Speaker 1: I've always been around, but like trying to take it
- 3:56Speaker 1: more serious about collecting. And so I was out in
- 4:00Speaker 1: London at Freeze the art fests out there. That was
- 4:03Speaker 1: my first time going to That was amazing. They call
- 4:06Speaker 1: the train and went to paris Um to check out
- 4:09Speaker 1: another artist that I really love. One of my favorite artists'
- 4:12Speaker 1: name is Tabar Stratching out of the Bahamas. Phenomenal artists
- 4:17Speaker 1: doing some great stuff. He had this this sculpture of
- 4:21Speaker 1: Malcolm X and Betty Shabaz. Obviously you know that that
- 4:25Speaker 1: struggle chord with me. But it's just when I'm in
- 4:28Speaker 1: the way of Michelangelo, it's awesome. You've I've been to
- 4:31Speaker 1: your place in New Orleans, your new place, and so
- 4:33Speaker 1: you have art all over the things, and I know, like,
- 4:37Speaker 1: how has art become your passion? I want to kind
- 4:40Speaker 1: of go into that. Me and you talk about these
- 4:41Speaker 1: things all the time. You know, you're always trying to,
- 4:44Speaker 1: you know, keep your mind going and things like that.
- 4:46Speaker 1: But how is art really just taken off in your
- 4:47Speaker 1: own Um well, I think I like anything that has
- 4:50Speaker 1: like to do with storytelling. Um. And and you know,
- 4:54Speaker 1: like I said, I grew up around art, so my
- 4:55Speaker 1: aunts and artists. So I've I saw paintings on the walls,
- 4:59Speaker 1: like as I can remember my earliest memories, I saw,
- 5:02Speaker 1: you know, these these paintings. I remember you ever saw
- 5:06Speaker 1: the Sugar Shack Eddie Barnes. It's the it's the um
- 5:12Speaker 1: Marvin Gaye album cover. Uh oh yeah, I saw that picture,
- 5:17Speaker 1: that painting on my wall from as early as I
- 5:19Speaker 1: can remember. My aunt did a cover of it. I
- 5:21Speaker 1: thought it was heard painting for the longest until I
- 5:24Speaker 1: got older and learned about who Ernie Barnes was a
- 5:27Speaker 1: former NFL player that turned artists and is now one
- 5:30Speaker 1: of the like goats of you know, black artistry. But
- 5:33Speaker 1: it's just the idea of being able to to think
- 5:35Speaker 1: about something and articulate it and express it in a way,
- 5:39Speaker 1: um that might be nuanced, you know. So we sit
- 5:41Speaker 1: here and we were exposed only to sports, uh kind
- 5:45Speaker 1: of outlets where if we want to talk about these
- 5:48Speaker 1: other things, we're at the mercy of like the writer
- 5:52Speaker 1: or the journalist who's you know, has an agenda, but
- 5:56Speaker 1: being able to express yourself in ways that always with words.
- 6:01Speaker 1: So whether it's your fashion, whether it's film, music, art, like,
- 6:06Speaker 1: all of those things to me are just storytelling. And
- 6:09Speaker 1: when I get to sit with an artist and they
- 6:11Speaker 1: break down why they use this material, you know, like
- 6:15Speaker 1: we'll say, oh, this is trash, and it's like exactly,
- 6:17Speaker 1: they use trash specifically to tell this narrative, like and
- 6:21Speaker 1: all of those things to me, once you understand it,
- 6:24Speaker 1: like change how you value it, and all of a
- 6:27Speaker 1: sudden you're attached to these pieces because they speak to
- 6:30Speaker 1: a narrative. It's like listening to a good song when
- 6:32Speaker 1: a writer says something that like he articulates the feelings
- 6:36Speaker 1: that you had, but you can never like put it
- 6:38Speaker 1: like that. It's something with art once you learn how
- 6:40Speaker 1: they're doing it, like I could never make that or
- 6:43Speaker 1: do that in that way, and it's so interesting and
- 6:45Speaker 1: they took that that narrative and perspective on whether it
- 6:48Speaker 1: be sculpture or abstract paintings, all of that. Now, do
- 6:51Speaker 1: you do any artwork yourself though, being that you are
- 6:53Speaker 1: a fan of it, can you can you draw, Can
- 6:56Speaker 1: you sculp? Can you I know I can't paint, can't
- 6:59Speaker 1: draw hands, stuff. But what I have started to figure
- 7:03Speaker 1: out is like, yeah, like all right, well what are
- 7:05Speaker 1: and this is what I think is important, Like for
- 7:07Speaker 1: every black man, this is one thing that we don't do,
- 7:09Speaker 1: is we need like some creative outlet, like in general.
- 7:13Speaker 1: And so one of the things I started to do,
- 7:16Speaker 1: um was photography. Like I just picked up a camera,
- 7:19Speaker 1: showed myself how to do it, and so you know,
- 7:23Speaker 1: I'll go out, I'll take pictures, edit them. Taught myself
- 7:25Speaker 1: how to do it, and I have like a photo
- 7:26Speaker 1: all all of them like my own stuff. And I'm
- 7:29Speaker 1: working on some things you know here there, but you
- 7:31Speaker 1: got to learn kind of the basics. And I'm like,
- 7:33Speaker 1: I'm not gonna put nothing out there or it might
- 7:35Speaker 1: just be only for me to see. It's just my
- 7:37Speaker 1: own little private thing. But yeah, I think I am
- 7:40Speaker 1: looking for ways to Like the more you get around it,
- 7:43Speaker 1: you start to learn how they do it. Yeah, you
- 7:45Speaker 1: play around with it. Dad were a little bit, but
- 7:47Speaker 1: I'm not gonna I'm no artists, But what's what's one
- 7:49Speaker 1: of the best pieces you've taken? M I gotta I
- 7:52Speaker 1: can send it to you too. I got this picture.
- 7:54Speaker 1: I was in Morocco and I went through the markets
- 7:58Speaker 1: in Madrid and you go into it. This is guys
- 8:01Speaker 1: the snake charmers and stuff. This guy takes his snake
- 8:03Speaker 1: and he's like like draping it like over his face
- 8:06Speaker 1: and he's like kissing it. I took a picture of it,
- 8:08Speaker 1: like real close, like edit up. It's like phenomenal, Like
- 8:12Speaker 1: it's like my favorite picture that I'm taking. I was like, Okay.
- 8:14Speaker 1: Everybody who comes and sees it, they're like like, oh,
- 8:17Speaker 1: who took that? And I'm like, yeah, I did that.
- 8:21Speaker 1: Yeah I'd like to. I like, I like to check
- 8:24Speaker 1: that piece out and send it to Roma or whatever.
- 8:26Speaker 1: I got you dogs. So now that you're back in
- 8:28Speaker 1: the States, you went on vacation, you're enjoying yourself. You're
- 8:32Speaker 1: going all over. I know most of these places. But
- 8:34Speaker 1: so what you've been up to? Doc? I mean, I know,
- 8:37Speaker 1: I know the girls back in school, So what you
- 8:39Speaker 1: up to? Half of my time, it's just being dad.
- 8:42Speaker 1: Like I'm at home, I'm in the school drop off lines,
- 8:45Speaker 1: I'm in the pickup lines. So tell them how you
- 8:47Speaker 1: cooking it up? Too? Because I've been over there, use
- 8:49Speaker 1: cooking dinner dog. Oh yeah, it's a full time job.
- 8:53Speaker 1: Like you know, I'm a single dad with no nanny,
- 8:55Speaker 1: so I got two girls. I'm like, We're up at
- 8:58Speaker 1: in the morning, breakfast, clothes, to school. I get my
- 9:02Speaker 1: little work in, you know, work out, do whatever I
- 9:05Speaker 1: gotta do between the then it's pick up and it's
- 9:08Speaker 1: like clockwork, you know, you pick them up. Here's a
- 9:10Speaker 1: snack change, l get to soccer practice, get home homework.
- 9:15Speaker 1: While they doing homework, I'm cooking dinner, gig dinner. We
- 9:18Speaker 1: got about thirty minutes to chill, watch something and then
- 9:21Speaker 1: they sleep and hold are your kids? They are eight
- 9:24Speaker 1: in a four eight and four. Yeah. So that's that's
- 9:28Speaker 1: the majority of my life, about half of the month
- 9:30Speaker 1: and then the other half of the month, um um,
- 9:33Speaker 1: either doing some of the things that I enjoyed. So
- 9:35Speaker 1: it's like the arts uff or it's bouncing around and
- 9:37Speaker 1: a couple of smaller gigs like just talking about the
- 9:40Speaker 1: game of all little podcast stuff here there. Um but yeah,
- 9:44Speaker 1: working on more creative stuff than anything else, to be honest.
- 9:49Speaker 1: So after eight months of retirement, bro, you're watching football?
- 9:53Speaker 1: Do you miss it? Not? At all I had one.
- 9:58Speaker 1: I went to my first game finally, Saints versus Raiders,
- 10:03Speaker 1: and in pre game, I was like, okay, yeah, it's
- 10:06Speaker 1: the pre game, that's really it. Though, I was like
- 10:08Speaker 1: I could I could almost feel my pads on my body.
- 10:11Speaker 1: I was like, yeah, yeah, like yeah, I could play,
- 10:12Speaker 1: I can play right now. But after that, like now,
- 10:14Speaker 1: I really I really have not had any like second
- 10:18Speaker 1: guesses or thoughts are like playing the game. I actually
- 10:21Speaker 1: enjoyed this vantage point of being a fan and like
- 10:23Speaker 1: and having no control over what's happening, yea make it
- 10:26Speaker 1: like the anxiety of that, like the tension in the moments,
- 10:29Speaker 1: I'm like, oh, this is amazing. You know what's real funny,
- 10:32Speaker 1: mount was that I didn't know how hard it was
- 10:35Speaker 1: being a fan, Like like you just mentioned about the anxiety,
- 10:38Speaker 1: Like when you have no control, it's way worse, Like
- 10:43Speaker 1: it's way horrible being just on the field, like you
- 10:46Speaker 1: only control, You're only just concerned with your job. You're like, bro,
- 10:48Speaker 1: I'm just trying to I don't have time to be
- 10:50Speaker 1: worried about none of that. I have so much. I'm
- 10:53Speaker 1: such a fair weather person as a fan, Like I'm
- 10:56Speaker 1: in the first quarter, like Yo, they down there down fourteen.
- 10:59Speaker 1: It's with Yeah, this game is As a player, I
- 11:03Speaker 1: was the guy that was always like man, we always
- 11:05Speaker 1: come back like this is super super positive. As a fan,
- 11:10Speaker 1: I'm like this is all right. So when did you
- 11:13Speaker 1: know it was time to retire? Because you we had
- 11:17Speaker 1: talked about it, but I didn't know you was gonna
- 11:19Speaker 1: pull the trigger. And when you did, it was just
- 11:21Speaker 1: like no hesitation, almost like your tweet game. Yeah, I
- 11:24Speaker 1: mean it got easy. Yo, I'm be honest, it just
- 11:28Speaker 1: got easy. And it's like, um, it's taking up too
- 11:31Speaker 1: much time. It's like a lot going on, like from
- 11:33Speaker 1: family life, Like yo, you sacrifice a lot of it,
- 11:35Speaker 1: Like I want to spend more time with my family,
- 11:37Speaker 1: want to spend more time doing all these things. But
- 11:40Speaker 1: like in football has taught me so much, like when
- 11:43Speaker 1: you learn, like literally to be a professional in the game,
- 11:47Speaker 1: like the nuances of the game, Like it takes a
- 11:50Speaker 1: certain skill level to get there, and then you start
- 11:53Speaker 1: to realize that like if I applied this these same
- 11:56Speaker 1: tools anything else in life, YEA to succeed, Like it's
- 12:01Speaker 1: we know how to we know how to build teams,
- 12:03Speaker 1: we know process, we know discipline, like we understand evaluation.
- 12:07Speaker 1: We know how to deal with failure, how to come
- 12:09Speaker 1: back from failure, how to stay focused and success like
- 12:11Speaker 1: these are all things that people in the real world
- 12:13Speaker 1: struggle with. CEOs and people who build businesses don't have
- 12:18Speaker 1: these tools. And we've been doing this since me personally,
- 12:21Speaker 1: since I was seven, and so it almost started to
- 12:24Speaker 1: feel like like football is what I love, but it's
- 12:27Speaker 1: not what I'm built to do. Everything that I'm built
- 12:30Speaker 1: to do is like pulling on me, like it's calling me.
- 12:33Speaker 1: And the game of football really just got easy. Bro.
- 12:35Speaker 1: Remember you told me this when I was young and
- 12:37Speaker 1: I was trying to learn how to play strong and safety.
- 12:39Speaker 1: I'm like, man, how do you know how how do
- 12:41Speaker 1: you read so fast if it's running past? And he
- 12:43Speaker 1: was like, I'm like, what are you looking at? He
- 12:45Speaker 1: was like, I mean it's a feel like it just
- 12:48Speaker 1: it just sound different, and I'm like what. But we
- 12:52Speaker 1: were talking about like man, you just feel the game
- 12:53Speaker 1: out a while and it's like okay. And then probably
- 12:56Speaker 1: two three years later, like I've reached that point where
- 12:59Speaker 1: like I would the game and it was like oh
- 13:01Speaker 1: and I kind of knew it was never like the
- 13:03Speaker 1: last two years I played. I was not nervous at
- 13:06Speaker 1: all for any game, and it was like, Okay, it's
- 13:10Speaker 1: probably time I've done everything I needed to do. I
- 13:12Speaker 1: can still play. I love competing, but it's like I'm
- 13:16Speaker 1: I'm cheating people. You know me, Roman, I'm an all
- 13:18Speaker 1: in type of person, thousand percent like all in if
- 13:22Speaker 1: you got me here, and so if I can't be
- 13:24Speaker 1: like that, it's like, then it's probably time for me
- 13:26Speaker 1: to move to something else. I was probably smart. It's
- 13:29Speaker 1: funny that you say the whole the nervous and I
- 13:33Speaker 1: think one of the unique things though about the way
- 13:36Speaker 1: you retired is you did it on your term like
- 13:39Speaker 1: you did it. Most people don't retire when they're ready.
- 13:42Speaker 1: It's either they didn't get picked up or they got
- 13:47Speaker 1: injured and that was it. I was kind of the
- 13:49Speaker 1: the guy that got injured because I still wanted to play.
- 13:51Speaker 1: But after I told my ACL in Carolina my last year,
- 13:54Speaker 1: I was like, man, I'm going on like thirty four
- 13:57Speaker 1: thirty five. I just told my ACL, I think I'm
- 14:00Speaker 1: gonna have to call it a day because no one's
- 14:02Speaker 1: trying to pick up an old guy. And you also
- 14:06Speaker 1: said something, um, how Rome when you were younger. Rome
- 14:09Speaker 1: really took you under his wing and he told you
- 14:13Speaker 1: and you know, gave you some some some great advice
- 14:16Speaker 1: what his room taught you that you're kind of using
- 14:19Speaker 1: today right now. Roman taught me a lot in leadership.
- 14:24Speaker 1: That's crazy to say because Malcolm was the captain, Like
- 14:27Speaker 1: I like, I was never that's crazy to me to
- 14:31Speaker 1: hear that, But I was always like I don't need
- 14:33Speaker 1: all that stuff. Go ahead and I'm sorry, um, and
- 14:35Speaker 1: not leadership in like like I'm stand in front of
- 14:38Speaker 1: the entire room, but like man to man leadership, Yeah,
- 14:43Speaker 1: you got that old man wisdom like I've seen, like, Okay,
- 14:46Speaker 1: when Tracy Porter is, you know, our main corner, he's
- 14:50Speaker 1: our guy, and then he's just late one too many times.
- 14:53Speaker 1: So where like like at first it's like we don't
- 14:55Speaker 1: care what the coaches, can't care what they want. But
- 14:57Speaker 1: now it's like, oh you do something. Now it's like
- 14:59Speaker 1: a player on meet and then you you're you're too late.
- 15:01Speaker 1: Like instead of being a thing where most of us
- 15:05Speaker 1: know how to call people out in a big room,
- 15:07Speaker 1: you do that because you got back up. You got
- 15:09Speaker 1: other people to like to jump on as well. But
- 15:13Speaker 1: like I'm just watching and he'll hang back and like, hey, Tracy,
- 15:16Speaker 1: let me stay here, and then to have a man
- 15:18Speaker 1: and man conversation about like oh no, like we need
- 15:20Speaker 1: more out of you. And and Roman is not the captain.
- 15:23Speaker 1: He's not like the dude with the sea on his chest.
- 15:25Speaker 1: He's not the and it's like, oh, the ability to
- 15:27Speaker 1: meet people like what they are, understanding who's who? And
- 15:30Speaker 1: then uh. And then when I got to Philadelphia, Um,
- 15:34Speaker 1: like I was like that guy, and I started to
- 15:37Speaker 1: realize a lot of the stuff that Roman used to
- 15:38Speaker 1: say to me. Um, I had to say to Rodney McLeod.
- 15:43Speaker 1: He was a young dude just like me, came through
- 15:45Speaker 1: Greg Williams defense, so super cerebral, like we spoke the
- 15:50Speaker 1: same language, but he thought he knew everything. And we
- 15:53Speaker 1: want to question the coach on everything, like you're not perfect,
- 15:56Speaker 1: You're gonna ask the coach every single question. And I
- 15:58Speaker 1: remember Roman used to tell me it's like, bro coach.
- 16:01Speaker 1: And then Crime Dog was our dB coach my last
- 16:03Speaker 1: year in New Orleans, and they said, Bro, you're clearly
- 16:06Speaker 1: smarter than everybody. That's fine, but like for this meeting
- 16:10Speaker 1: to go, like, you can't disrupt the meeting, like you
- 16:13Speaker 1: want to do this on your own time. Go upstairs
- 16:15Speaker 1: with them early, like on Tuesday, and get all of
- 16:18Speaker 1: that out before we get to the meeting on Wednesday,
- 16:20Speaker 1: because the other people are not learning, Like the guys
- 16:23Speaker 1: who don't know what you know aren't learning because you
- 16:26Speaker 1: like it's causing confusion. And I'm like, okay, fine, like
- 16:30Speaker 1: finally shut up, and it's like, okay, learn how to
- 16:33Speaker 1: do it in a different way. And when I got
- 16:34Speaker 1: to Philly, I was able to talk to Rodney about
- 16:37Speaker 1: those things because I had been through it, and I
- 16:39Speaker 1: just bust out laughing. Nney said all the same things
- 16:41Speaker 1: that I was saying, and it's like, Okay, I'm prepared
- 16:44Speaker 1: for this. It's only how growth changes you though, you
- 16:47Speaker 1: know what I'm saying. How would prepare? Rome was the
- 16:49Speaker 1: same way in Philly or excuse him now Philly in Carolina,
- 16:53Speaker 1: but Rome would do that with You did that with Banet,
- 16:56Speaker 1: Trey u Jo, Josh Norman like he was. I think
- 17:01Speaker 1: Rome was. Again, were you a captain in Carolina? Yeah,
- 17:05Speaker 1: wasn't the captain in Carolina, but he was the I
- 17:08Speaker 1: guess because you had all that great They just kind
- 17:10Speaker 1: of looked just like you gotta be gotta just like yo,
- 17:13Speaker 1: he's he's he's like that old the old guy off
- 17:16Speaker 1: for the show Kung Fu. You know, like they just
- 17:18Speaker 1: always would flock to Rome for some of that old
- 17:21Speaker 1: school advice, and it was just like yeah, and they
- 17:23Speaker 1: used to call him up too, hey uh uh o,
- 17:30Speaker 1: lou let me yeah, let that have we gave him
- 17:33Speaker 1: Roman some flowers, let me like, let me let me
- 17:35Speaker 1: put some parameters back on this now. This is that
- 17:38Speaker 1: was the one example that I had. I was like,
- 17:40Speaker 1: Roman was also the reason why I didn't get along
- 17:42Speaker 1: with a lot of coaches because he didn't walked into
- 17:45Speaker 1: the room. I'm like it was I'm a young guy,
- 17:47Speaker 1: I'm a rookie. Probably I hope you gonna tell me this.
- 17:50Speaker 1: I hope you told this story. This is like the
- 17:52Speaker 1: best one ever. Yeah, play something like that. And he's like, uh,
- 17:57Speaker 1: four year player, and you know, coaches and nitpicking on
- 18:00Speaker 1: like little things. We're undefeated in my rookie year. We're
- 18:04Speaker 1: like ten and oh and the coaches are still trying
- 18:06Speaker 1: to like, you didn't set the edge right here like
- 18:08Speaker 1: it's supposed to on the numbers. You set it out here.
- 18:10Speaker 1: It's like, bro, they're giving him they gave him a
- 18:13Speaker 1: bad grade, like he had all he balled out and
- 18:15Speaker 1: got like a bad grade. So now romans mad. And
- 18:19Speaker 1: then uh, Dennis Allen, the head coach now the Saints,
- 18:22Speaker 1: said he was a dB coach and he said something
- 18:25Speaker 1: like slick and Roman was just like, man, y'all, just
- 18:28Speaker 1: I'm just saying, y'all, hear nitpicking. He's like nitpicking. He's like,
- 18:32Speaker 1: he's like you said all the time, this is a
- 18:35Speaker 1: this game is played by players, coaches, just coach, I
- 18:40Speaker 1: said on at the back of the room, like what
- 18:43Speaker 1: you're gonna say. Coach didn't say nothing else after that,
- 18:45Speaker 1: but it was like he was also that guy. You
- 18:48Speaker 1: gotta he played call of duty all day. I was like, God,
- 18:51Speaker 1: this is this is Roman Harper. Great hair does not
- 18:53Speaker 1: mean wisdom. They just assumed that when he got the
- 18:55Speaker 1: Carolina well he definitely he definitely had it though, because
- 19:00Speaker 1: I'm not gonna like he used to put the old schools.
- 19:02Speaker 1: You and Kurt I would meet y'all in the morning
- 19:04Speaker 1: and that's how we watch film. You know what I'm saying,
- 19:06Speaker 1: it's true professional and it sounds like I think one
- 19:09Speaker 1: of the biggest jumps that rookies don't have is learning
- 19:14Speaker 1: how to be a professional when they go from college
- 19:17Speaker 1: to the NFL. And it always takes, for the most part,
- 19:20Speaker 1: an older guy, a veteran to give the younger guys
- 19:24Speaker 1: some tips, some advice on how to watch film, how
- 19:26Speaker 1: to practice, how to eat, how to take care of
- 19:28Speaker 1: your body treatments, so on and so forth. Malcolm, what
- 19:32Speaker 1: would what would your advice be to NFL players and
- 19:36Speaker 1: or athletes in general? Just about being a professional. I mean,
- 19:41Speaker 1: you know, every time you come into this game, you
- 19:43Speaker 1: want to play it as long as you can, right,
- 19:45Speaker 1: And there's certain things that like will help you last
- 19:48Speaker 1: in the game and have nothing to do with football.
- 19:50Speaker 1: Professionalism is one of them. Like the ability, Like they
- 19:54Speaker 1: tell you all the time, accountability and availability are like
- 19:57Speaker 1: two the major things when it comes to teams evaluating players.
- 20:01Speaker 1: You can be as talented as you want, but if
- 20:03Speaker 1: I can't hold you accountable or I don't think that
- 20:06Speaker 1: you can just do your job and you're not healthy,
- 20:10Speaker 1: then no matter what your talent is, you can't I
- 20:13Speaker 1: can't use you. UM. And so it's really just about um.
- 20:19Speaker 1: Coaches are always evaluating you. Like it's not just on
- 20:22Speaker 1: the field, it's how you walk around the building. It's
- 20:25Speaker 1: do you take notes? Do you make new mistakes? Are
- 20:28Speaker 1: you a repeat mistake offender? Like all these things have
- 20:31Speaker 1: nothing to do with like how well you tackle, how
- 20:34Speaker 1: well you catch the ball. It's how you how you
- 20:37Speaker 1: hold yourself and carry yourself in and improve yourself. Coaches
- 20:41Speaker 1: are not that good in the NFL. I'm like, I
- 20:43Speaker 1: know this is a podcast with this, but I don't
- 20:45Speaker 1: believe that coaches are that good. It's like, how much
- 20:47Speaker 1: as how many coaches have actually taught you, like a
- 20:51Speaker 1: new technique that took you to the next level as
- 20:53Speaker 1: a player. A lot of it is self governance, right,
- 20:56Speaker 1: Like if I messed up, I got to stay after
- 20:58Speaker 1: practice and improve myself. That like, real improvement comes on
- 21:03Speaker 1: your own in the off season, it comes on your
- 21:05Speaker 1: own and your own time. Your preparedness for the game
- 21:08Speaker 1: comes on your own time. All of that stuff. You
- 21:11Speaker 1: don't think the coaches help you learn the game though
- 21:14Speaker 1: in a sense maybe not a technique, but just like
- 21:17Speaker 1: learning the game itself. Some do. But I would say
- 21:20Speaker 1: out of the amount of coaches I played for, six
- 21:22Speaker 1: coordinators under that you had like different you know, dB coaches,
- 21:26Speaker 1: I didn't learn a game from the majority of them,
- 21:29Speaker 1: I probably learned the game from like Greg Williams, m
- 21:32Speaker 1: Jim Schwartz, Um, Rob Bryan, I'll learned the game from.
- 21:37Speaker 1: And then Corey Underland was a dB coach that I
- 21:39Speaker 1: had in Philadelphia who could have been a de coordinator.
- 21:44Speaker 1: And then Dennis Allen. I did learn some football from him,
- 21:46Speaker 1: like some stuff, but like you're not learning how to that.
- 21:50Speaker 1: None of the stuff I was learning was helping me
- 21:52Speaker 1: cover Calvin Johnson. And the professionalism is like understanding that
- 21:57Speaker 1: that's your responsibility, like that it's not it's not the
- 22:01Speaker 1: coach's responsibility. I mean technically it is, but nobody cares
- 22:05Speaker 1: at the end of the day, like on Sundays, like
- 22:09Speaker 1: you being prepared, being healthy and being ready to perform,
- 22:12Speaker 1: They're gonna look at you for that responsibility, not looking
- 22:15Speaker 1: at the coaches on that and those who can do
- 22:18Speaker 1: it consistently tend to stay around longer. So I'm just
- 22:22Speaker 1: gonna throw it out there out what's it like the
- 22:24Speaker 1: only sports team bro. I mean, let's let's calm down here, guys.
- 22:29Speaker 1: It's stressful. So I was a minority owner in Burnley
- 22:32Speaker 1: Football Club. Um, we're in the Premier League last year
- 22:36Speaker 1: and got relegated. Yeah, so it was bro it was.
- 22:41Speaker 1: It was a dramatic fashion too. Came down to like
- 22:43Speaker 1: the last match of the year. It's going back and forth. Yeah,
- 22:47Speaker 1: we got relegated. We're in the Champion League, but it
- 22:49Speaker 1: was the Premier League soccer, not in the Champion League.
- 22:52Speaker 1: UM Burnley. It's awesome though, I mean, you know, as athletes,
- 22:56Speaker 1: you don't we don't even imagine. It's like early thought
- 23:00Speaker 1: I was going to play in the NFL, Like I
- 23:01Speaker 1: didn't even have dreams to do that. So to be
- 23:04Speaker 1: in a position where you're like my minority owner and
- 23:06Speaker 1: a sports club and another country is just that's that's
- 23:13Speaker 1: a big accomplishment for me and my team, and it's
- 23:16Speaker 1: really just like you. But I look at my businesses.
- 23:19Speaker 1: I'm in so many different things like on purpose um
- 23:23Speaker 1: and just being yeah. I mean so I'm in everything
- 23:26Speaker 1: from real estate to franchise and we own half over
- 23:31Speaker 1: at half a dozen I'm sorry, over a dozen quick
- 23:33Speaker 1: service restaurants and getting ready to blow that to over
- 23:36Speaker 1: thirty in the next two years. We've got a venture
- 23:40Speaker 1: capital fund called Broadstreet Ventures doing investments into growth in
- 23:45Speaker 1: late stage companies. UM that's been going well. Got my
- 23:49Speaker 1: own production company. UM. We just acquired and just invested
- 23:54Speaker 1: into one of the largest distilleries in Pennsylvania. So we've
- 23:58Speaker 1: got the spirits and all of that, who are all
- 24:00Speaker 1: over the place real estate, sports groups in sports is
- 24:05Speaker 1: one of the things I also wanted to invest in
- 24:07Speaker 1: being an athlete, Like we know, we know how valuable
- 24:12Speaker 1: we are like as as athletes in the sports, and
- 24:14Speaker 1: so it's like, well, how do how do do we
- 24:16Speaker 1: not invest into having some kind of equity into UM
- 24:20Speaker 1: you know that sports space where we know athletes, we
- 24:23Speaker 1: know how to build a brand, we know how to
- 24:25Speaker 1: add value to an organization because I've had thirteen years
- 24:29Speaker 1: of professional experience and even more when we go back
- 24:31Speaker 1: to how long we've been playing ball, So how do
- 24:34Speaker 1: you I mean, I know you said you're retired, you
- 24:36Speaker 1: were done and family time with the kids, and you
- 24:38Speaker 1: give us a whole schedule, Like how do you have
- 24:41Speaker 1: time to do all of this with all your businesses.
- 24:44Speaker 1: The best thing I've ever done in my life was
- 24:46Speaker 1: build a team while I was playing UM and so
- 24:51Speaker 1: I figured out ways to you know, most of us
- 24:53Speaker 1: when we come into the league, we are on a
- 24:56Speaker 1: conveyor belt. Right, it's like, get an agent, get advisor,
- 25:00Speaker 1: get all these people who they tell you you're supposed
- 25:02Speaker 1: to have. Great I did that as well, and then eventually,
- 25:06Speaker 1: as I've gone along, I just started to realize, all right,
- 25:09Speaker 1: who's making money off of me and who cannot replace?
- 25:12Speaker 1: Like how do they make money? It's like, well, oh,
- 25:13Speaker 1: I've got a friend who can handle my finances. They
- 25:16Speaker 1: do it for another company, you know, and get they're
- 25:20Speaker 1: working a ninety five to do that same job for
- 25:22Speaker 1: another company. I was like, well, as soon as we
- 25:24Speaker 1: can build enough up together over here and we can
- 25:27Speaker 1: afford to pay you full time, leave that and come
- 25:29Speaker 1: do it for me, and it will build that who
- 25:32Speaker 1: we have the franchising, same thing with the investments. Then
- 25:36Speaker 1: it's the real estate and so enable for like, I know,
- 25:39Speaker 1: I can't do all these things alone, so I'd rather
- 25:43Speaker 1: share in the equity and then have other people join
- 25:46Speaker 1: me and build it. And That's how I'm able to
- 25:48Speaker 1: get into all these other things, is that I'm just
- 25:50Speaker 1: taking people and evaluating who I think is in the
- 25:53Speaker 1: best position to really like take off and run in
- 25:57Speaker 1: that space, and I'm equipping them with the cap the
- 26:00Speaker 1: leverage in in my social capital, like the doors that
- 26:04Speaker 1: I can get into. I'm bringing them into that space
- 26:07Speaker 1: to do that for me. And I was able to
- 26:10Speaker 1: do that while I was playing. While I'm you know,
- 26:12Speaker 1: while everybody cares about who you are, they want to
- 26:15Speaker 1: let you in the door. I'm just bringing my people
- 26:17Speaker 1: with me and I retire, I'm sitting around a group
- 26:20Speaker 1: of five people, and we've got stuff that we can
- 26:23Speaker 1: do on our own, Like we're not knocking down doors looking,
- 26:26Speaker 1: you know, to go work for somebody else. We've got
- 26:29Speaker 1: all of that in place, and it's about just scaling
- 26:32Speaker 1: it now. And that's that's the biggest thing. That's probably
- 26:35Speaker 1: the best thing I've ever done. And you know, I
- 26:37Speaker 1: gotta give him out. I gotta give him out credit
- 26:39Speaker 1: because I remember, like his rookie year, second year, he
- 26:41Speaker 1: was telling about these apartments he home in Columbus. I'm like, what,
- 26:45Speaker 1: you ain't here? Yeah, I ain't gonna take credit for that.
- 26:48Speaker 1: But that was part of my team though, right, That's
- 26:50Speaker 1: what I'm saying, Like he was already doing these things
- 26:53Speaker 1: at an early age where when you first come and
- 26:55Speaker 1: everybody's telling you, man, you gotta save you gotta be smart,
- 26:57Speaker 1: you gotta do this and just focus. And Malchael was
- 27:00Speaker 1: already doing these things. That's why I just want to
- 27:02Speaker 1: let him know that, man, this started forever ago that
- 27:06Speaker 1: I've been blessed to have people around me that have
- 27:09Speaker 1: made me challenge the way that things are done or
- 27:12Speaker 1: made me think about these things in different ways early
- 27:15Speaker 1: enough that now here I am, I can walk away
- 27:18Speaker 1: from the game because the decision for me and my
- 27:21Speaker 1: retirement is like, okay, is can I walk away from
- 27:26Speaker 1: the money? Yeah? And that really is what it like,
- 27:29Speaker 1: that's the hardest thing. And I'm like, I don't never
- 27:31Speaker 1: want to be in a position where I'm afraid to
- 27:32Speaker 1: walk away from money, and I feel like I got
- 27:35Speaker 1: to be there only for it, And so that was like, okay,
- 27:37Speaker 1: let's move and luckily I've been in a position where
- 27:41Speaker 1: I can um. But like to Roman's point, though, that
- 27:44Speaker 1: didn't start like two years ago, that's been that's been
- 27:47Speaker 1: doing that for a minute. Yeah, that's what's up. That's
- 27:49Speaker 1: what's up. So I know five years ago you started
- 27:52Speaker 1: the Player's Coalition. Yeah, and I mean you've been very
- 27:57Speaker 1: vocal about kneeling national anthem. How uh you know African
- 28:03Speaker 1: Americans how we could be and be more included in
- 28:07Speaker 1: a lot of things and specifically police, law enforcement, just
- 28:11Speaker 1: stuff that's happened around the United States within the last
- 28:15Speaker 1: i don't know, ten fifteen years, right, this has been
- 28:18Speaker 1: this huge shift. Has the Player's coalitionment going the way
- 28:23Speaker 1: you felt it should? I think it's been since its creation. Yeah,
- 28:27Speaker 1: since creation, I think I think the Coalition has um
- 28:32Speaker 1: has honestly exceeded my expectations ten fom UM And so
- 28:38Speaker 1: I think there's a misunderstanding about the Coalition as well.
- 28:41Speaker 1: Is that there that it's a program that's like underneath
- 28:44Speaker 1: the NFL, and it's not. These are two separate entities,
- 28:47Speaker 1: the Player Coalition. What we did was do something that's
- 28:49Speaker 1: never been done before. We looked at a bunch of
- 28:52Speaker 1: group of athletes that wanted to be socially engaged, wanted
- 28:55Speaker 1: to use their platforms to have some real impact in
- 28:59Speaker 1: UM in our way our society is structure, and they
- 29:03Speaker 1: had the idea to do that together and then we
- 29:07Speaker 1: would create an organization that was completely built by players
- 29:11Speaker 1: and completely run by players. All the decision making comes
- 29:13Speaker 1: from players that separate from the union and separate from
- 29:16Speaker 1: the league that will make these decisions on how we
- 29:19Speaker 1: pushed the money that we got from the league, We
- 29:21Speaker 1: decide where that money goes. We also build an organization
- 29:25Speaker 1: that a vehicle for players who now want to be involved.
- 29:29Speaker 1: They don't have to, you know, try to. Their only
- 29:33Speaker 1: option is not to push against their their team clubs
- 29:37Speaker 1: and do these things in the locker room, will on
- 29:39Speaker 1: the field. They can contact us, get all the education
- 29:41Speaker 1: they need, get all the resources they need. We can
- 29:43Speaker 1: organize the events that they want, whether it be in
- 29:45Speaker 1: their city or their hometown, so that the work can continue.
- 29:50Speaker 1: And since then we've expanded to not only just the NFL,
- 29:54Speaker 1: and it started with twelve NFL players and expanded to
- 29:58Speaker 1: hundreds that have been engaged in our work, but we
- 30:02Speaker 1: also expanded to twelve other professional sports leagues, so that's
- 30:07Speaker 1: w NBA Soccer based. Like all of these groups have
- 30:10Speaker 1: now created their own coalitions and their underneath sister like
- 30:15Speaker 1: our we're the umbrella company to all of that. So
- 30:18Speaker 1: our example and our resources have not have turned into
- 30:21Speaker 1: not only work that we can do. That is, we've
- 30:23Speaker 1: given away millions to grassroots organizations that do the work
- 30:27Speaker 1: every day, but it's also catapulted and empowered other athletes
- 30:32Speaker 1: across different you know, sports in sections. I'm still very
- 30:37Speaker 1: involved from the high level stuff. But what we recognize
- 30:40Speaker 1: is that politics and our impact is more regional, which
- 30:44Speaker 1: is perfect for the way that athletes are. Right. We
- 30:47Speaker 1: focus a lot on kind of these national debates and
- 30:49Speaker 1: national conversations, but really the powerlise state and local and so,
- 30:54Speaker 1: and that's where we're most powerful, rights where our fan
- 30:56Speaker 1: bases are. So I'm able to do so much work
- 31:00Speaker 1: in Philly and get so much done in Philly that
- 31:02Speaker 1: I can't do in Oakland. Um. And so for me,
- 31:05Speaker 1: it's been about the particular communities that you live in.
- 31:09Speaker 1: How are you being engaged there? And so for me, yeah,
- 31:12Speaker 1: all my work is focused on the Philadelphia area. That's
- 31:14Speaker 1: kind of my my territory. And then and then recruiting,
- 31:18Speaker 1: like how do we get the next generation of leaders
- 31:21Speaker 1: to take this up? Because an krom building, you know,
- 31:23Speaker 1: the co founder, he retired in order to help us
- 31:27Speaker 1: build it, and he built it up while I was
- 31:28Speaker 1: still playing kind of the voice of it all. Um.
- 31:31Speaker 1: But now I'm retired, right, and there's end times and
- 31:35Speaker 1: circumstances are different, and so there is a need for
- 31:38Speaker 1: this next voice these next leaders to carry this out
- 31:41Speaker 1: into the forefront because there are a lot of important
- 31:44Speaker 1: things that are happening um socially in our communities and
- 31:48Speaker 1: multiple communities that will need voices of athletes that will
- 31:51Speaker 1: need a collective um and nobody no better person to
- 31:56Speaker 1: serve them than those next generation leaders to be in
- 31:59Speaker 1: the coalition. Do you have to be an active player
- 32:02Speaker 1: or are there tired players? Oh no, no, no, so
- 32:05Speaker 1: well yeah, we're focused with athletes, but but it's we
- 32:09Speaker 1: have both retired and active and it's really a spectrum
- 32:13Speaker 1: of how you want to get involved like some and
- 32:15Speaker 1: this is why we built it. It's like, whatever you
- 32:17Speaker 1: want to do. If it's just hey, I want to
- 32:19Speaker 1: get information on what's happening in my city that I
- 32:22Speaker 1: should be aware of, or I want to you know,
- 32:25Speaker 1: sign on to a letter with some other people, well
- 32:27Speaker 1: all I gotta do is sign my name. I want
- 32:29Speaker 1: to send a tweet, or if you want to full out,
- 32:32Speaker 1: like I want to have a town hall and organize,
- 32:34Speaker 1: you know, meetings with politicians. Whatever it is you want
- 32:38Speaker 1: to do, we can set that up for you. And
- 32:40Speaker 1: that's that's what the Coalition is for players to get active. However,
- 32:45Speaker 1: it is they want and how do they reach out
- 32:47Speaker 1: to you to get those resources? Yeah, Players, Players Coalition
- 32:51Speaker 1: dot org is the Website's got all of our information
- 32:54Speaker 1: and all of our programs, the pillars and the things
- 32:57Speaker 1: that we stand for. We're doing things in education and
- 33:00Speaker 1: economic justice, criminal justice reform, policing, community relations, like the
- 33:06Speaker 1: whole gambit. So it's not even just like one thing,
- 33:09Speaker 1: it's multiple topics. You can get involved in. Its multiple levels.
- 33:13Speaker 1: Um and even if it's just you just want information
- 33:16Speaker 1: to figure out, like we just had an election. If
- 33:18Speaker 1: you want to know information about the local candidates, you know,
- 33:22Speaker 1: and what's going on in your city, you just need that.
- 33:25Speaker 1: We're a resource. Got you? Got you? So you've been
- 33:29Speaker 1: extremely vocal your career. Were you always kind of like
- 33:33Speaker 1: the the vocal guy or was that something that you
- 33:36Speaker 1: kind of had to grow into? Where did that mount
- 33:37Speaker 1: Ain't you got the name Malcolm? So I feel like
- 33:40Speaker 1: it's like where did that come from? That? Yeah? I
- 33:47Speaker 1: mean obviously, like like I've been I've been raised obviously
- 33:51Speaker 1: with a with a very detail kind of history of
- 33:54Speaker 1: just like black people, what we are capable of and
- 33:59Speaker 1: kind of what we've been through. And honestly not even enough.
- 34:02Speaker 1: Like for me as an adult, I'm still on a
- 34:04Speaker 1: journey of just learning kind of how we've arrived to
- 34:06Speaker 1: where we are. I'm actually a person who's very introverted
- 34:10Speaker 1: and who does not like conflict. But so I'm somebody
- 34:16Speaker 1: when it's time, I'll do what needs to be done.
- 34:19Speaker 1: And so when you see me raising my hand and
- 34:22Speaker 1: being so loud and vocal, you have to understand that
- 34:25Speaker 1: that's because I believe that this needs to be done.
- 34:28Speaker 1: It's not what I want to be doing. I don't
- 34:30Speaker 1: want to invite these this energy, this this friction. But
- 34:34Speaker 1: if it's but if it comes down to, like like
- 34:36Speaker 1: on a football field, if I got to tackle this
- 34:38Speaker 1: guy who's bigger than me, I gotta take on this
- 34:40Speaker 1: pulling guard, well I'm gonna find out. You'll see how
- 34:42Speaker 1: much I love my teammates based on how I make
- 34:45Speaker 1: that decision. And for me, I love my communities. I've
- 34:48Speaker 1: been raised to love my family and the people that
- 34:51Speaker 1: I come from. I have a lot of pride in it,
- 34:53Speaker 1: and I have a lot of understanding that we as
- 34:57Speaker 1: a people are not innately violent, upid, or inadequate. So
- 35:02Speaker 1: when you look at those symptoms coming out of specific communities.
- 35:07Speaker 1: You have to look at, well, what is causing that.
- 35:09Speaker 1: If I don't believe that these people are just like that,
- 35:11Speaker 1: then there are reasons that explain all of it, And
- 35:14Speaker 1: if we can get to those reasons, then we'll get
- 35:16Speaker 1: to the core and stop trying to stop the symptoms
- 35:20Speaker 1: of it all. And so for me, it just like
- 35:23Speaker 1: any captain, sometimes you just got to stand out front,
- 35:25Speaker 1: take the bullets, just to keep this thing focused, keep
- 35:28Speaker 1: everything going in the right direction. And at that point
- 35:30Speaker 1: in time, that was what was needed from not only me,
- 35:33Speaker 1: like Colin Kaepernick obviously took a knee, Eric Reid and
- 35:38Speaker 1: Mike Thomas. So you had voices all over the league
- 35:41Speaker 1: that we're really stepping up to the plate and all
- 35:44Speaker 1: of that. And I get my name gets attached to
- 35:47Speaker 1: the coalition a lot, but it's a coalition meaning there's
- 35:51Speaker 1: a group of guys decisions. There was a group of
- 35:53Speaker 1: us that were in those negotiations, a group of us
- 35:55Speaker 1: that made every decision that got us there right, you know,
- 36:00Speaker 1: And and that to me is really like the most
- 36:03Speaker 1: important part. Brother Jake, y'all stay too. We're gonna We're
- 36:06Speaker 1: gonna pay a couple of bills we'll be right back.
- 36:08Speaker 1: All right, we're back after a little bit of commercially,
- 36:11Speaker 1: I had to pay some bills. My man Peter net
- 36:12Speaker 1: Tilma here with our guests today, Malcolm Jenkins, Brother Jay.
- 36:17Speaker 1: Yeah we go, brother Jake or brother Malcolm, however you
- 36:20Speaker 1: want to go for it. NFL Players Second Acts Podcast.
- 36:23Speaker 1: Thank you again, Malcolm. We've got a couple of quick
- 36:25Speaker 1: hitters for you. All right. First thing comes to mind.
- 36:28Speaker 1: Be ready for some of these questions gonna be challenging.
- 36:30Speaker 1: Some of them are just all for giggles, bro, just
- 36:32Speaker 1: being honest with you, all right, you ready? All right?
- 36:35Speaker 1: What was the first thing you splurged on after you
- 36:37Speaker 1: got drafted? The first thing I bought was two thousand
- 36:43Speaker 1: and nine Mercedes five fifty. Oh yeah, that's classic. Yeah,
- 36:54Speaker 1: all black everything. I love Scott Grams nothing, I ain't
- 36:58Speaker 1: do nothing to it all and those to it all right.
- 37:02Speaker 1: I got what was your what was your goal to
- 37:04Speaker 1: outfit for a game? Uh So I always had like
- 37:08Speaker 1: so you know, I got my own suit company, so
- 37:10Speaker 1: I always try out have a yeah, DeMar, you know,
- 37:13Speaker 1: based out of fifty so we uh so I always
- 37:16Speaker 1: designed something nice seven weeks playing out or eight weeks
- 37:20Speaker 1: at home. Okay, hold, so you would you would already
- 37:23Speaker 1: have them laid out like first day of school, like
- 37:25Speaker 1: this is this week, this is this week before the season.
- 37:27Speaker 1: I'm like, hey, all right, this week we got a
- 37:29Speaker 1: primetime game week three. I need to have something fire
- 37:32Speaker 1: for that. Got this road game. Yeah, you know you
- 37:35Speaker 1: gotta you gotta have it all. You gotta have a
- 37:37Speaker 1: plan because I'm not trying to think about that. You know,
- 37:39Speaker 1: the day before the game, the morning of the game.
- 37:42Speaker 1: What outfit? I'm aware, let's get that done. Well, shout
- 37:46Speaker 1: out to Demark because I just ordered mine just came
- 37:48Speaker 1: in the other day, so it's about time. If you
- 37:50Speaker 1: could do it all over again, would you get to
- 37:52Speaker 1: que Brandon on your arm. I'm thinking about getting another one.
- 37:56Speaker 1: I got the one of them, I got one of
- 37:57Speaker 1: my chest and I got a double hit right here.
- 38:00Speaker 1: Oh yeah, I would for sure, Rome step up. Well
- 38:04Speaker 1: if not, if you get double headed bro again, I'll
- 38:06Speaker 1: get one. Oh. I wouldn't gotta do with me. It's
- 38:12Speaker 1: still I need somebody hold my hand, all right? All
- 38:16Speaker 1: I did I did this one with no help. I
- 38:18Speaker 1: ain't even nobody hold me. Just put a book right
- 38:20Speaker 1: there and just control, man. You got it, bro, it
- 38:26Speaker 1: is mental though. You're right, it is mental. It's mental.
- 38:30Speaker 1: You're right. You've been through how many NFL training camps
- 38:32Speaker 1: We're trying to tell me you can't sit still? How
- 38:34Speaker 1: many shots in MRIs and all kind of stuff in
- 38:37Speaker 1: the head. You can't sit still? Get Brandy real quick,
- 38:40Speaker 1: hey man, going to that mail doctor. It's probably even worse,
- 38:43Speaker 1: more mental than all of that. But all right, who
- 38:46Speaker 1: is on your personal Mount Rushmore? Malcolm? My Mount Rushmore
- 38:52Speaker 1: would be Malcolm, Max, jay Z, Dave Chappelle, and James Baldwin. Nice,
- 39:07Speaker 1: you're the first person that hasn't mentioned their mom and
- 39:09Speaker 1: their death. I get it. I get it. I'm just
- 39:13Speaker 1: telling you the first one. Bro. It's okay, it's okay.
- 39:16Speaker 1: I actually really like yours more than everybody else's action
- 39:18Speaker 1: because it was like real people that we can look
- 39:20Speaker 1: up to and like, not touch. You know what I'm saying,
- 39:23Speaker 1: I can help. I wish I would have liked that more.
- 39:30Speaker 1: About James Baldwin growing up as a kid, I wish
- 39:33Speaker 1: they would have taught what he stood for, what he said,
- 39:36Speaker 1: his writing, like just everything he was about. I wish
- 39:41Speaker 1: I would have learned more about him as a kid
- 39:43Speaker 1: in my youth than learning about him later in life
- 39:45Speaker 1: as an adult. Now I'm learning about him and I
- 39:48Speaker 1: know who he is now. But I wish to god
- 39:50Speaker 1: they would have taught about this man in high school
- 39:52Speaker 1: or in junior higher elementary school, because he has so
- 39:56Speaker 1: much knowledge, so much knowledge, And the problem was that
- 40:01Speaker 1: and he's you know, we talk about writers in general.
- 40:04Speaker 1: He's one of the greatest American writers of all time,
- 40:09Speaker 1: and and we are just getting to a place where
- 40:12Speaker 1: we probably accept them on the broader basis simply because
- 40:15Speaker 1: he was homosexual. Yeah, right, so we took all of
- 40:18Speaker 1: that that greatness kind of under the rug um. But
- 40:22Speaker 1: I'm glad that, like you said, more people are getting
- 40:25Speaker 1: exposed to his writing and just what he meant, even
- 40:28Speaker 1: just for like the psyches of black folks. The brother
- 40:32Speaker 1: was brilliant, all right, last U Right now, My life
- 40:37Speaker 1: is right now, My life is an adventure. Football gives
- 40:47Speaker 1: you so much structure. Every day they tell you where
- 40:49Speaker 1: to go, what time the bus leaves, what time you eat,
- 40:52Speaker 1: what time you rest. And now every day I wake up,
- 40:57Speaker 1: I don't know what's coming. And it's like and it's
- 41:00Speaker 1: getting used to like being okay with that and then
- 41:03Speaker 1: actually enjoying that part that like literally every day is
- 41:07Speaker 1: something new to experience, is something new to learn um
- 41:11Speaker 1: and having to like embrace that. So there's no such
- 41:14Speaker 1: thing as good bad. It's just like this is just
- 41:17Speaker 1: what today was, and I'll get through it and then
- 41:19Speaker 1: tomorrow go at it again. And that that part to
- 41:22Speaker 1: me is like it is so uncomfortable. But if there's
- 41:25Speaker 1: anything I learned while playing balls, you gotta get very
- 41:27Speaker 1: comfortable being uncomfortable, no doubt. And Malcolm, you're a person
- 41:31Speaker 1: that has always lived in the black and white and
- 41:33Speaker 1: me have always in the gray. Song. I'm enjoying hearing
- 41:36Speaker 1: those words, which is crazy now have like you're more
- 41:40Speaker 1: black and white, and I'm probably the great one in
- 41:42Speaker 1: both of us, Like right, there's really no no white.
- 41:45Speaker 1: But I love that growth in you, my bro. You
- 41:48Speaker 1: know I love that. So So malt Man, tell me
- 41:50Speaker 1: about this your foundation event on Tuesday, November twenty nine. Yeah,
- 41:54Speaker 1: so that's given Tuesday. M Actually, like I said, I'm
- 41:57Speaker 1: right here now at a part where Northwest High scho
- 42:00Speaker 1: in Philadelphia. It's one of the schools that we've adopted
- 42:03Speaker 1: to do a lot of our work in and we
- 42:04Speaker 1: are building out these financial literacy programs that will roll
- 42:08Speaker 1: out here but also in a few other partner schools
- 42:10Speaker 1: in North from New Jersey and North specifically. And this
- 42:14Speaker 1: fundraiser that we're doing, the Fantasy Blitz, so our first
- 42:18Speaker 1: fundraiser back in the city since I left as an Eagle.
- 42:21Speaker 1: So excited to be back. But obviously we're gonna be
- 42:24Speaker 1: doing things around fantasy football is kind of this game
- 42:26Speaker 1: show host. The Eagles are flying high right now, so
- 42:29Speaker 1: a lot of super high, super high, so you know,
- 42:32Speaker 1: the biggest thing is just trying to get around and
- 42:34Speaker 1: join football having some fun. There'll be a bunch of
- 42:36Speaker 1: former and current Eagles that are being the building and
- 42:40Speaker 1: we're raising money to build out these financial literacy programs
- 42:44Speaker 1: that again I'm literally actively doing today, just finished that
- 42:48Speaker 1: one session, and we want to break this out to
- 42:50Speaker 1: multiple schools and the only way we can do that
- 42:54Speaker 1: is when we raise the funds and get the support
- 42:56Speaker 1: community to actually build that infrastructure. That's what's up now, Magee.
- 43:00Speaker 1: You in trouble Eagles, Eagles or Saints pick one. I mean,
- 43:05Speaker 1: you know, it depends on what you Gotta give me
- 43:07Speaker 1: some context. I can't it's just pick one Eagles the Saints.
- 43:13Speaker 1: I mean, I mean, if you're saying, like, okay, give
- 43:15Speaker 1: me the political answer, Eagles the Saints Eagles, and Saints
- 43:19Speaker 1: Eagles are Saints. But nah, Now I live in both cities.
- 43:24Speaker 1: I lived there. I have to let my head there,
- 43:25Speaker 1: so I can't just be saying crazy stuff. But no,
- 43:29Speaker 1: I think, I think for me. I tell people all
- 43:31Speaker 1: the time like I cut my teeth in New Orleans,
- 43:33Speaker 1: but like where I made myself as a player and
- 43:35Speaker 1: man was in Philadelphia, So I'm a little bit more
- 43:38Speaker 1: tied to Philly. I'm it's an hour away from home,
- 43:41Speaker 1: like that is that is me, Like that that places me.
- 43:45Speaker 1: But obviously, like I love New Orleans, got a lot
- 43:48Speaker 1: of history, did two stints there. They gave me a second,
- 43:51Speaker 1: second row go around when I needed it. I'm going
- 43:54Speaker 1: to go better myself. They were there for me so
- 43:56Speaker 1: and I had the most fun probably the last two years,
- 43:59Speaker 1: the two years in my seat in my career were
- 44:02Speaker 1: so unique for me, and that I had so much
- 44:03Speaker 1: fun just playing the game of football that like New Orleans.
- 44:08Speaker 1: It's like I can't just make that to say just
- 44:11Speaker 1: Philly and ignore New Orleans much of an impression on me.
- 44:16Speaker 1: You know, I appreciate that. I knew I was hoping
- 44:19Speaker 1: you would say Philly because I remember when you went
- 44:20Speaker 1: up there. You were like, Bro, I was there. The
- 44:23Speaker 1: first thirty minutes. People were hunking horns at me. I
- 44:25Speaker 1: felt like I was back, baby, I was back in Jersey.
- 44:27Speaker 1: People angry. It was AWESO get out of that southern
- 44:31Speaker 1: hospitality and everybody's being nice. I'm like, no, I need
- 44:33Speaker 1: a chip on my shoulder at all times. Look, man,
- 44:36Speaker 1: keep that chip on your shoulder. Bro. You could come
- 44:38Speaker 1: from so many great things. You're a great dude and
- 44:40Speaker 1: an awesome person, amazing leader. Anybody that wants to learn
- 44:44Speaker 1: more about life, entrepreneurship, any of these cities, go out
- 44:47Speaker 1: there and follow the Scott macolm jen because all you
- 44:49Speaker 1: do is all you do is win. My brother. So,

- 45:19Speaker 1: didn't like. I just watched how y'all moved as individuals
- 45:22Speaker 1: on the field off the field, and y'all have affected
- 45:25Speaker 1: an entire generation of players who watched that. So hats
- 45:28Speaker 1: off to both of y'all. Appreciate y'all having me on
- 45:30Speaker 1: for sure. Appreciate your boss,
