Transcript
- 0:00Alright, today we're going to read the Pauline Confession.
- 0:22I don't know if you guys have ever heard of the Pauline Confession, but it's actually
- 0:26in Timothy chapter 3.
- 0:29So we're going to read this together.
- 0:30Are we ready?
- 0:32We are.
- 0:33Alright, here we go.
- 0:34Great indeed we confess is the mystery of godliness.
- 0:42He was manifest in the flesh, vindicated by the spirit, seen by angels, proclaimed among
- 0:50the nations, believed on in the world, taken up in glory.
- 0:56That's Timothy 3.16.
- 0:59How many of you guys have ever known that there was actually a confession right there
- 1:03in the scripture?
- 1:05Pretty neat isn't it?
- 1:07One of the important things I want us to do as we go through this chapter 3 is really
- 1:14start to, hopefully you guys have seen that as we've been dealing with the issue of biblical
- 1:20manhood, the foundations of being a biblical man and the foundations of being a biblical
- 1:26woman, we then get to the point of leadership.
- 1:29And it's important as God is dealing with Timothy, Paul is trying to get Timothy to
- 1:37really understand why it's important to be the man of God that God has called him to
- 1:45be.
- 1:46Chapter 3 deals with some very important things I think in the church.
- 1:49Many churches, I want to say this gently, many churches don't follow this process.
- 1:57Like how churches should operate.
- 2:02And the importance of the structure of leadership.
- 2:06And so there's these standards that he gives concerning the leadership and then there is
- 2:10a clear understanding of these things as we go through them.
- 2:14So we're going to go through this and we really ended in chapter 2 with this understanding
- 2:22that Adam was born first then Eve and Adam was not deceived but the woman was deceived
- 2:29and became a transgressor yet she will be saved or she will find her.
- 2:35She will be well and whole as a mother, as bearing children if they continue in faith
- 2:41and love and holiness and self control.
- 2:44And all of a sudden he goes right into this statement concerning elders.
- 2:49Why?
- 2:52So before we get started there I'm going to pray and ask God that he would guide us through
- 2:56this and so you can understand why Paul wrote this to Timothy.
- 3:01Lord we want to thank you and praise you.
- 3:02You are righteous and good.
- 3:04You are a God of order.
- 3:06You have set things in place for the well being of your people, for the health of your
- 3:12church, for the proclamation of the gospel and so that all in the world may know that
- 3:18we are your people.
- 3:20Lord we praise you and thank you that you have set these things in place that your people
- 3:25may live holy and godly lives.
- 3:27We praise you in the name of Jesus.
- 3:31Amen.
- 3:32So the saying is trustworthy.
- 3:37So what we notice here is as Paul starts his, this part of the letter to Timothy, he kind
- 3:45of gives a clear understanding of where men should be in the hierarchy of the church and
- 3:52the polity of the church.
- 3:53The problem with the church in Ephesus is the women were dominant there.
- 4:00They were running things.
- 4:01They were managing things and the men were not really stepping up to do the job and so
- 4:09he lays things down quite clearly in chapters one and chapter two and then he says here
- 4:16is how things should be.
- 4:18This is trustworthy.
- 4:22If anyone aspires to the office of overseer, he desires a noble task.
- 4:29For an overseer must be a brubbly approach, the husband of one wife, sober minded, self
- 4:34controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, not a drunkard, not violent but
- 4:42gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money.
- 4:46He must manage his own household well with all dignity, keeping his children submissive.
- 4:53For if someone does not know how to manage his own household, how will he care for God's
- 4:59church?
- 5:00He must not be a recent convert.
- 5:04He may become puffed up with conceit and fall into the condemnation of the devil.
- 5:09Moreover he must be well thought of by outsiders so that he may not fall into disgrace into
- 5:18a snare of the devil.
- 5:20Wives likewise must be dignified, not double tongued, not addicted to much wine, not greedy
- 5:26for dishonest gain.
- 5:27They must hold the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience.
- 5:31Let them also be tested first.
- 5:35Then let them serve as deacons if they prove themselves blameless.
- 5:40Their wives likewise must be dignified, not slanderers but sober minded, faithful in all
- 5:45things.
- 5:46Let deacons each be the husband of one wife, managing their children and their own household
- 5:51well.
- 5:52For those who serve well as deacons gain a good standing for themselves and also great
- 5:57confidence in the faith that is in Christ Jesus.
- 6:00I hope to come to you soon but I am writing these things to you so that if I delay you
- 6:08may know how you ought to behave in the household of God which is the church of the living God,
- 6:18a pillar and buttress of the truth.
- 6:22Great indeed we confess is the mystery of godliness.
- 6:27He was manifest in the flesh, vindicated by the spirit, seen by angels, proclaimed among
- 6:33the nations, believed on in the world, taken up in glory.
- 6:40So this is quite a remarkable chapter in that he gives the clear understanding of why he
- 6:46is writing these things.
- 6:50And that's in verse 15.
- 6:53Principle number one.
- 6:55The man who aspires to the episcopae.
- 7:00This is where we get the word episcopalian from, episcopae is the word here.
- 7:08So the man who aspires to the episcopae desires a wonderful occupation.
- 7:16But know this, it is a work that will require a life fully devoted to Christ.
- 7:23So I exhort the elders among you as a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ
- 7:30as well as a partaker in the glory that is going to be revealed.
- 7:34Shepherd the flock of God that is among you.
- 7:37Exercise oversight, not under compulsion but willingly as God would have you.
- 7:43Not for shameful gain but eagerly.
- 7:46Not domineering over those in your charge but being examples to the flock.
- 7:53And when the chief shepherd appears you will receive the unfading crown of glory.
- 7:59Notice Peter 5, 1 through 4.
- 8:02It's the supporting scripture here.
- 8:05So interesting, this word trustworthy.
- 8:11This means worthy of trust.
- 8:14Pretty simple.
- 8:16Can be relied on.
- 8:18This statement can be relied on.
- 8:21If anyone, they use the word anyone here.
- 8:24It means a certain one.
- 8:26A certain one aspires.
- 8:29Not anyone meaning women.
- 8:33This is not a woman's position.
- 8:36And I am not going to be apologetic for speaking the truth.
- 8:42This is a certain one is the word here.
- 8:45The word is this.
- 8:47A certain one aspires.
- 8:49What certain one?
- 8:51For Adam was formed first, then Eve.
- 8:55Adam was not deceived but the woman was deceived.
- 8:59This certain one.
- 9:01He clarifies this later on here which we will get to.
- 9:06So this certain one aspires.
- 9:09This certain one is to stretch, to touch, or to grasp.
- 9:13In other words, the one who is certain, the man who wants to grasp the office of overseer
- 9:23is the idea here.
- 9:24Episcopae is the word.
- 9:27And the word means oversight, overseer, office, or charge.
- 9:31This is not church's charge.
- 9:33This is God's charge for that man.
- 9:39He desires a noble task.
- 9:42The word task here is argon.
- 9:45Employment or occupation.
- 9:48Why is that important?
- 9:49Because this is not something that the man who gives his life to the service of you and
- 9:55your people, he does for free.
- 9:59He gives his entire life to the care of the sheep, to the care of God's people.
- 10:05It is the church's responsibility to give unto that man what is rightfully due for his
- 10:11work.
- 10:12They did it with the priest.
- 10:14We do it now in the church.
- 10:16I'm saying this not because you guys don't take good care of me.
- 10:19You do.
- 10:20That's not the issue here.
- 10:21I'm just trying to clarify exactly what Paul is teaching Timothy here.
- 10:26Therefore, an overseer must be above reproach.
- 10:30There is no other word better than the word reproach.
- 10:34He must be above reproach.
- 10:36He must not have any accusation against him publicly or in the church.
- 10:44The husband of one.
- 10:46The word is heis, one in one or in opposed to many, a monogamous.
- 10:53That's what this word means.
- 10:55Not one in a lifetime.
- 10:57One meaning not a polygamous man.
- 11:01Not a man who has many wives.
- 11:04One wife.
- 11:05The Lord knows one's enough.
- 11:10Just saying.
- 11:11Amen.
- 11:12Thank you, Todd.
- 11:13All right.
- 11:19I'm not going to go there.
- 11:22Cheryl will get them later.
- 11:26He is a husband of one at a time.
- 11:31One hopefully for the rest of his life, wife.
- 11:35A sober minded, the word here, sober minded means not controlled by wine, clear headed.
- 11:42It's interesting that there's two times he talks about wine or drunkenness.
- 11:48One is here, meaning sober minded, clear headed, not controlled by wine.
- 11:53And the other is a drunkard.
- 11:55It's interesting, right?
- 11:58So he must not be controlled by the outward influences.
- 12:04Clear headed.
- 12:05He must be self controlled.
- 12:08So frown is the word here, curbing one's desires and impulses.
- 12:14So self controlled means I am not going to be driven by my desires or impulses.
- 12:20That's what he means here.
- 12:22Respectable, well arranged, modest.
- 12:29You'd be kind of different if I came in with ripped jeans.
- 12:32It's kind of wild when I see some preachers behind the pulpit who come in with jeans and
- 12:38a hoodie.
- 12:41Like that's respectable.
- 12:44It's not respectable in any church.
- 12:46Remember who you represent.
- 12:51I should wear ties.
- 12:52Some of some of them wear ties.
- 12:54I can't.
- 12:55I'm not a tie guy, but button down would be nice.
- 13:01But we must be respectable.
- 13:04Hospitable, phylloxanas means generous to guests.
- 13:12You wonder why I've set an example for the last three years of the importance of reaching
- 13:17out to every single person that walks in the building.
- 13:21That is an example set for you.
- 13:25Set them an example, Peter says.
- 13:28If I do not set that example, will you?
- 13:32Every single person in our church should be going out of their way to touch and to shake
- 13:38hands and to give a right hand of fellowship to any visitor that walks in.
- 13:44Ask them how their visit was.
- 13:46Let them know we love them.
- 13:47We care about them.
- 13:48We are glad that they're here.
- 13:51Important, very important.
- 13:55Able to teach.
- 13:58I'm going to try to say this as well as I can.
- 14:02But my Greek's not perfect.
- 14:05Didaktikos.
- 14:06Oh, thank you, Jesus.
- 14:11Didaktikos means apt and skillful in teaching.
- 14:16Apt and skillful in teaching.
- 14:20I've been talking to a friend of mine from Delaware and telling me about a young man
- 14:28that he's been under and this gentleman's been through some things and he's really
- 14:34kind of young in the faith when it comes to shepherding.
- 14:38The question for every person should be considering is that man apt and skillful in teaching?
- 14:51Not that he can stand behind a pulpit and be charismatic.
- 14:56Charismatic preachers don't equip.
- 14:59Charismatic preachers make you feel real good and then you go out wondering how in the world
- 15:03can I live this Christian life and you walk out defeated every single week because they
- 15:08are not apt and skillful in teaching.
- 15:15Not a drunkard.
- 15:17Not violent, a bruiser, but quick to fight, but gentle, fair and mild, not quarrelsome.
- 15:25Amikos, not quick to fight or provoke an argument.
- 15:32Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called sons of God.
- 15:38Not a lover of money.
- 15:42Money does not mean a heck of a lot if that's all you care about.
- 15:47As a matter of fact, it's evil.
- 15:50We are given money as stewards.
- 15:54He must manage, pristime, to be over, to superintend, to preside over his own household with all
- 16:08dignity, probity, high moral standard, or probity depending on how you want to say it in English.
- 16:18I think it's probity.
- 16:20I know it's probity.
- 16:21I shouldn't have said that.
- 16:23He should with all dignity keeping his children hupatege, obedient.
- 16:31For someone does not, if someone does not know how to manage his own household, how
- 16:38will he care for God's church?
- 16:41He can't.
- 16:44He cannot.
- 16:46And this is just, understand man, this is not just about elders meaning even though
- 16:52it's speaking of elders, you should be doing this in your home.
- 16:56You are the shepherd of your house.
- 17:00This is not just for pastor or just for the elders.
- 17:06It's every man in this room.
- 17:08Whether your kids are grown up and moved out, he must not be a new convert, a neophyte,
- 17:19or a novice, or he may become puffed up with conceit.
- 17:24To fa'o means rude and arrogant, lack of respect.
- 17:29Man, we know some dudes that are like that.
- 17:32Why?
- 17:33Because they were given a position they should never have been given.
- 17:37They haven't learned to suffer through well.
- 17:41What does it mean to hold this kind of position and not lord it and domineering over it, but
- 17:47to lovingly guide, shepherd, walk with, properly discipline out of love and concern, not out
- 17:57of demand that you do what I tell you to do, but pointing you and driving you to the chief
- 18:02shepherd of our souls, Jesus Christ.
- 18:09So he must not be rude, arrogant, lack of respect, or proud.
- 18:14He must fall into epipito.
- 18:19What metaphorically means to come among robbers or to fall among robbers is the word here.
- 18:32He must not fall into condemnation.
- 18:39The condemnation he's talking about here is condemnation passed by God.
- 18:44This is God's condemnation on the man who was supposed to be the shepherd of the people,
- 18:51who is a new convert, who is proud and arrogant.
- 18:56God condemns him.
- 18:57He sentences him.
- 18:58He judges him.
- 19:01He judges him by presenting him to the accuser, the slanderer, the culminator.
- 19:10God basically, in his discipline of this man, wrecks his ability to lead.
- 19:17He is no longer above reproach.
- 19:22God ensures that this man's testimony is a mess.
- 19:26I can give you several examples of that, especially last year.
- 19:32Don't need to do that.
- 19:35God has already done that for some of these men who call themselves shepherds and are
- 19:40not.
- 19:42Moreover, he must be well thought of, good, character, and a testimony by outsiders so
- 19:53that he may not fall into disgrace.
- 19:56He may not fall into reproach or disapproval, into a snare.
- 20:01Pagis is the word here, meaning that whatever brings peril, loss, destruction, allurements
- 20:09to sin.
- 20:11The allurements to sin of who?
- 20:14The accuser, the culminator.
- 20:20Interesting.
- 20:23He writes this.
- 20:26For those assigned, second principle, for those assigned to the office of deacon are
- 20:31given a great task of stewardship in caring for God's people and properly managing God's
- 20:36money.
- 20:39If we think of eldership, understand we are held to the highest of standard and will give
- 20:46an account for everything we do and say to the living God.
- 20:54Everything.
- 20:57Being deacons, the scripture says this in Acts 6, 2-3.
- 21:01And the twelve summoned the full number of the disciples and said, it is not right that
- 21:05we should give up preaching the word of God to serve tables.
- 21:09Therefore, brothers, pick out from among you seven men of good repute, full of the spirit
- 21:16and wisdom whom we will appoint to this duty.
- 21:20Meaning that these listings here really do associate very well, perfectly actually, with
- 21:27good repute, full of the spirit and wisdom whom they are appointed to this duty.
- 21:37First Timothy 3, 8-13.
- 21:41Daikonos, office assigned to the care, assigned to care for the needs of the church, family,
- 21:51and steward God's money.
- 21:52That's what this literally means.
- 21:54An office assigned to care for the needs of the church, meaning God's family, and steward
- 22:01God's money.
- 22:04No deacon should be running the church.
- 22:08There are many churches, I've come from a couple, where the deacons rule.
- 22:12The deacons don't rule.
- 22:15God's men rule here.
- 22:17That's the way.
- 22:18Why?
- 22:19Because God is the chief shepherd.
- 22:20He runs his church.
- 22:22That's the design.
- 22:25If you've ever been into a church where the deacon makes all the decisions, they've given
- 22:30too much power, that's not their job and responsibility.
- 22:34Believe me, if you were to ask our deacons how much work it takes to care for the needs
- 22:39of the people and to steward God's money, that's more than enough.
- 22:44That's a lot.
- 22:47And I think they would agree.
- 22:50Amen, deacons?
- 22:54Now likewise, deacons must be dignified.
- 22:58Semnas is the word here, respected for character and honorable, not double-tongued.
- 23:05Dialogos, or logos, dialogue-os, meaning saying one thing to one person and something different
- 23:13to another, not being consistent with their word.
- 23:19That's important.
- 23:20You go to someone, you know, they need groceries.
- 23:24You go, we're going to give you, they got two kids, husband and wife, we're going to
- 23:31give you $200 for groceries.
- 23:33Their pantry is empty.
- 23:35Next family comes in, happen to like them a little bit better.
- 23:40Same issue, two kids, husband and wife, pantry is empty.
- 23:44We're going to give you $500.
- 23:47No!
- 23:48That's not right distribution.
- 23:51That's not fairness.
- 23:52That's not being a person of honor and character.
- 23:56That's why you can't be double-tongued, right?
- 23:59That's what it's talking about here.
- 24:01So don't say one thing to one person, another to something different to another.
- 24:05Be consistent.
- 24:08Consistency is everything when it comes to the care and to the stewardship of God's stuff.
- 24:15The greatest stewardship we have is not just the money.
- 24:20It's His people.
- 24:22I have said this over and over again.
- 24:24God will provide the money.
- 24:28You better take care of His people.
- 24:33Now not addicted, the word here, given to, controlled by, much whine.
- 24:39Isn't that interesting?
- 24:43Not greedy for dishonest gain.
- 24:45In other words, not because you're trying to take money.
- 24:50They must hold the mystery.
- 24:51They must embrace and keep the Christian truths of God, of the faith with a clear conscience,
- 25:00free from guilt, living rightly.
- 25:05And let them also be tested.
- 25:09Daikimazo, examine, prove, scrutinized.
- 25:15That's why we do what we do.
- 25:17We do the same thing with the elders.
- 25:19We do the same thing with the deacons.
- 25:21We scrutinize.
- 25:26Notice it says let them be tested first before they become a deacon.
- 25:31Then let them serve.
- 25:35Dekanaeo means to serve as deacons.
- 25:40If they prove themselves blameless, unaccused, unreproachable.
- 25:48Their wives likewise must be dignified, not slanderers.
- 25:53The word slanderers here is interesting.
- 25:56Diabolos is the word here.
- 25:58It's the same word, or a word that comes from, you guessed it, devil.
- 26:08In other words, don't be prone to slander or a false accuser.
- 26:16Be sober minded, not controlled by wine, clear headed, faithful in all things.
- 26:23Faithful in all things.
- 26:27Let deacons each be the husband of one wife, managing their children in their own households
- 26:33well.
- 26:34For those who serve well as deacons gain a good standing for themselves and also great
- 26:40confidence in the faith that is in Christ Jesus.
- 26:44So why is Timothy talking here in the church as if it's just the men who are deacons?
- 26:53Because the men weren't doing anything here.
- 27:01Can you imagine you're roughly around 19 years old and you've been called by God to shepherd
- 27:11a church in Ephesus, or the church in Ephesus, and the men are not being busy?
- 27:21It's not by accident that God calls Timothy to do this.
- 27:27His father is gone.
- 27:29He's passed away.
- 27:32He was raised by two women, his mother and his grandmother.
- 27:38And he had the responsibility to be the man of his house.
- 27:45He understood what it meant and Paul was holding him accountable.
- 27:51Third principle, God commands elders and deacons to manage their households.
- 27:58God has given us the example we must follow himself.
- 28:04When we as deacons and elders have an example we must follow Jesus Christ himself, the chief
- 28:12shepherd.
- 28:14Look what it says in Philippians 1.27, only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel
- 28:20of Christ so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of you that you are
- 28:28standing firm in one spirit with one mind striving side by side for the faith of the
- 28:35gospel.
- 28:36The reason why we are to manage our households well is because it sets an example to a world
- 28:43that desperately needs to see how God's people are with each other.
- 28:51First Timothy 3.14-15, I hope to come to you soon, but I am writing these things to you
- 28:58so that all these things that we have heard, all these things, chapter 1, chapter 2, going
- 29:09into 3, all of these things, he writes, notice what it says, if I delay, you may know, eedle
- 29:23is the word here, well known, acknowledge how, the word here is pos, in what way, so
- 29:32let me say it this way, that you may know well and acknowledge in what way you must
- 29:41live, you ought to, it is necessary, there is a need of, it behooves you, it is right
- 29:50and proper on how you should behave, how you should walk, conduct one's selves in Christ
- 29:58like character, in the household of God, oikos, when we think about how we should be living
- 30:10with each other, how we should be setting the example, how we should be purposing to
- 30:15walk side by side with each other, to serve with each other, this is how a household works,
- 30:24there are times when my kids don't want to, they are 19, don't want to have to do dishes,
- 30:33but we live in the house together, sometimes I am busy, sometimes mom is busy, it means
- 30:41it requires that you step up, same idea here, we work together, we live with and among each
- 30:49other, so if, Paul is saying if I delay, you, I write you these things so that you may know,
- 30:59that you may acknowledge in what way it is necessary, it is right and proper for you
- 31:07to walk and conduct yourself in Christ like manner, in the household, in the family of
- 31:13God, which is the church of the living God, not just any church, the word living means
- 31:23he is and be's, he is always, he be's, that is what that word living means, this is not
- 31:33just something you do on Sunday, this is a family and we must walk with each other and
- 31:41conduct ourselves with one another in a Christ like character because you are part of the
- 31:46household, why is this important, because the church of the living God is a pillar,
- 31:56a column, a buttress, a, to make firm and stable of the truth, when the church is out
- 32:06of kilter, when the church is not living in the way she should, she is not a pillar that
- 32:13holds the roof up of a coliseum, she is not the stable firm foundation that is necessary
- 32:21so that pillar does not fall over, look at our country, our country is in the shambles
- 32:33it is because the church is not the pillar and the buttress of the truth, we have accommodated
- 32:40lies, and we have stuck our head in the sand in the lies that continue to happen, I am
- 32:56not going to get on that soap box right now, I will not today, and what is left with us,
- 33:05it is interesting that Paul goes through this and he gives us this one statement right at
- 33:11the very end, what is the purpose of all of this, why should we walk in a way that is
- 33:21Christ like character, the Pauline confession, and as a matter of fact God gives his own
- 33:30confession, well the Pauline confession is God's confession, but either way he says something
- 33:36very similar in a very short concise statement to the people of Israel in Deuteronomy 6,
- 33:414, here O Israel the Lord our God, the Lord is one, great indeed we confess a common confession
- 33:56by consent of all we agree on this statement without wavering, is the mystery of godliness,
- 34:04what is the mystery of godliness, here it is that he was manifest in the flesh, who
- 34:11was manifest in the flesh, the God of all creation, the I am, the Alpha Omega, the everlasting
- 34:17to everlasting, the always was and always will be, and the one who is to come, this
- 34:24God manifest in the flesh, vindicated by the spirit, why, because he was resurrected, proven
- 34:33that he is God over and over and over again, he didn't have to, but he did, seen by angels,
- 34:43proclaimed among the nations and still proclaimed among the nations, because the devil has lost,
- 34:51he is hindered, locked up, put away, because every nation is hearing the gospel, he is
- 34:58no longer deceiving the nations, proclaimed among the nations and even till this day,
- 35:07and is believed on in the world, and then lastly he was taken up in glory, he sits at
- 35:19the right hand of God the father, he is the authority, he is in charge, he is the judge
- 35:26and he will judge everything, every dead, every living, they will be judged, every one
- 35:33of us, why is this important, because why would we be so quick to walk away from that
- 35:45confession, that being said, I think we will end it with that, father I want to thank you
- 36:00so much for your faithfulness and goodness, to you be honor and glory forever, we praise
- 36:05you and thank you that you were manifest in the flesh, vindicated by the spirit, seen
- 36:11by angels, proclaimed among the nations, believed on in the world, taken up in glory, and one
- 36:17day you will as you have promised come back for us your people, to you be honor and glory
- 36:23forever in Jesus name, Amen.
