- 0:39SPEAKER_03: Welcome in, everybody, to the Talk and Tech Podcast, powered by Guns Up Nation, part of the Guns Up Nation Podcast Network.
- 0:47SPEAKER_03: I am your host, Steven Rodriguez, my co-host, Tristan McGonagall.
- 0:50SPEAKER_03: Tristan, this is episode number 50 of the Talk and Tech Pod.
- 0:55SPEAKER_03: We have so much to discuss this episode with the recent realignment stuff, with some Kevin O'Banner stuff, with some other stuff.
- 1:03SPEAKER_03: We're gonna give you a big old blooper reel back here just to bring you back to the past 50 episodes of Talk and Tech Pod.
- 1:10SPEAKER_03: But Tristan, how does it feel to know that we've made it 50 episodes in?
- 1:15SPEAKER_03: They totally took our spotlight.
- 1:18SPEAKER_05: Wait, this was supposed, this day was supposed to be about us, about our podcast.
- 1:22SPEAKER_05: But no, UT and OU, as usual, us make it all about them.
- 1:26SPEAKER_05: But dude, hey, it feels good.
- 1:28SPEAKER_05: Uh, we're about a year into this, man, and holy cow, what a roller coaster we've been on.
- 1:33SPEAKER_05: I really don't think we could have ever picked a more wild time to start this podcast because Texas Tech Athletics has gone through the ringer of many bizarre things, and I think we're about to be on the craziest ride we've ever seen as tech fans.
- 1:49SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no doubt.
- 1:50SPEAKER_03: I mean, we can get straight into it with this realignment stuff because uh after all the reports that have come out, uh, if you have been living under a rock, uh, UTOU are looking to leave the Big 12 and looking to join the SEC.
- 2:03SPEAKER_03: Uh, it's looking like more and more of a real thing as the days have gone on.
- 2:08SPEAKER_03: Um uh this is uh I guess I guess for you, Tristan, explain when that news first broke.
- 2:17SPEAKER_03: How how were your thoughts?
- 2:19SPEAKER_03: What was going through your mind?
- 2:20SPEAKER_05: Well, initially, you're just like, here we go again.
- 2:23SPEAKER_05: This happens every single year.
- 2:24SPEAKER_05: It breaks that the Big 12 is going to look at alignment, someone's gonna leave the Big 12.
- 2:29SPEAKER_05: So within the first 30 minutes, I didn't really think too much of it.
- 2:34SPEAKER_05: Uh, I was just thinking, here we go again as a Big 12 fan.
- 2:37SPEAKER_05: But the craziest part about all this is that only happened 48 hours ago.
- 2:43SPEAKER_05: And here we are in our the college football landscape is about to completely change.
- 2:48SPEAKER_05: So blindsided is probably the best word to use because I think that's how everyone not named OU or UT feels right now.
- 2:57SPEAKER_03: Yeah, 100%.
- 2:59SPEAKER_03: That was uh, I was also kind of just you know, whatever on the news.
- 3:04SPEAKER_03: These rumors always pop up with conference realignment.
- 3:07SPEAKER_03: Hey, imagine if this happened and this happened, and OU's always wanted to leave the Big 12 and all this kind of stuff that you hear on Twitter.
- 3:15SPEAKER_03: But uh as the day progressed, more and more blue check marks kept saying, yeah, this is this is real, they're looking into it.
- 3:23SPEAKER_03: And then we hear about uh the Big 12 having a press cover or having a uh a phone call with all the uh all the uh Big 12 representatives coming together and talking about it, and then U T and O U were not on that call.
- 3:35SPEAKER_03: Now you're hearing it's basically a done deal.
- 3:38SPEAKER_03: At least what is a done deal is UT and OU are not gonna be a part of the Big 12 come soon.
- 3:45SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I think this is really showing the effect that social media is having on every aspect of our lives, right?
- 3:51SPEAKER_05: This because 10 years ago, this wouldn't have happened as fast.
- 3:54SPEAKER_05: Whenever the Pac 16, pack 14, wherever thing was happening, it was a very slow burn, you know, like it was a lot of rumors, a lot of wind, a lot of rumor mill, but now it's it's happening in the blink of an eye.
- 4:06SPEAKER_05: And we're hearing that UTNOU have been planning this for over six months, and with while keeping every Big 12 team in the dark about it, it just comes to show how scummy they are and how we're while we're shocked that this is happening, especially at the speed.
- 4:20SPEAKER_05: Is anyone truly surprised?
- 4:23SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean, we talked pre-pod about this, and at this point with me, I'm just I'm not surprised at all by it.
- 4:30SPEAKER_03: You know, the way UT has gone about their business in this conference, not really giving a shit about anybody else in the Big 12 and just themselves, uh, this isn't surprising at all.
- 4:41SPEAKER_03: And OU, I guess, you know, they're kind of the same way, uh, to a lesser extent, but still the same way, uh, to where really they're just buying in to what everybody says.
- 4:54SPEAKER_03: You know, the SEC is is the best football conference, the SEC makes the most money.
- 4:58SPEAKER_03: All that's true, but for them to just, you know, come up and leave like this and join, it's it's like Kevin Durant.
- 5:07SPEAKER_03: It honestly is.
- 5:08SPEAKER_03: That was the best comp that I saw was when Kevin Durant couldn't win with Oklahoma City and he moves to the Warriors and they become a super team.
- 5:15SPEAKER_03: Like it's just it's just stupid.
- 5:17SPEAKER_03: It's just it it this kind of stuff ruins college sports.
- 5:20SPEAKER_05: Oh, yeah, college sports as we know them.
- 5:22SPEAKER_05: We all knew this was gonna happen.
- 5:24SPEAKER_05: Like the the state of college sports was gonna eventually turn into this uh basically minor league NFL, minor league NBA sort of thing.
- 5:31SPEAKER_05: Um, so that part of it isn't really surprising, uh, sadly.
- 5:36SPEAKER_05: Uh that was that was a good way to put it with the Kevin Durant thing.
- 5:40SPEAKER_05: Um, but whenever you know, all the talking heads are saying recruits really care about playing in the SEC.
- 5:47SPEAKER_05: And whenever you look at the money breakdown, you're not surprised that they're gonna go that way because they're about to earn, especially whenever they renegotiate the SEC contract with a complete ESBN roll-up.
- 5:58SPEAKER_05: That's it, and the Longhorn Network wrapped into that.
- 6:01SPEAKER_05: It's gonna be unfathomable amounts of money for college football programs for something that's an amateur sport that was just supposed to be for fun with regional schools, has turned into basically a professional uh league, especially now that they're gonna be quotation marks paying players.
- 6:19SPEAKER_05: So we're in the wild, we're in a wild west.
- 6:21SPEAKER_05: We're in some sort of strange boom where college sports are truly never gonna look the same.
- 6:27SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no doubt.
- 6:28SPEAKER_03: I um I'm curious to see how things end up, but we should go into it more because this is the Talk and Tech podcast.
- 6:35SPEAKER_03: We need to talk about the implications for Texas Tech and what this means for our university, our school moving forward.
- 6:42SPEAKER_03: So I guess we should break down the options right now because I think to me, there's basically three options uh for Texas Tech, and you can feel free to chime in if you feel there's another option available.
- 6:54SPEAKER_03: But right now it's kind of like okay, one, we move to the pack and go pack 14, pack 16 conference, go that direction.
- 7:03SPEAKER_03: Two, we kind of try to band it, you know, glue back together the big 12 and add some more teams to replace UT and OU.
- 7:14SPEAKER_03: And then three, we move down to a G5 level type of conference.
- 7:19SPEAKER_03: So uh, I don't know.
- 7:20SPEAKER_03: Do you do you agree with that?
- 7:22SPEAKER_03: Those are kind of the three options here for tech for sure.
- 7:25SPEAKER_05: You know, people are also throwing around like Big Ten or ACC.
- 7:29SPEAKER_05: I really think those are non-starters for us.
- 7:32SPEAKER_05: I don't think that's happening at all, especially the Big Ten thing.
- 7:35SPEAKER_05: Um, so I I do think one, two, three, those are what's gonna happen.
- 7:40SPEAKER_05: And I think you kind of rank them to what we'd want.
- 7:44SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, yeah, no doubt.
- 7:46SPEAKER_03: Um, I I guess we can kind of get into that then.
- 7:49SPEAKER_03: Is the best case scenario here for both you and me, and people have gone back and forth with this.
- 7:55SPEAKER_03: Um, the best case scenario for for us right now is joining the pack 12, making the pack 14 or 16, uh, and then you know staying relevant in a power level conference.
- 8:08SPEAKER_05: I think we're looking super conferences dead in the eye.
- 8:11SPEAKER_05: I think we're gonna be looking at the power for when I we're gonna be saying super conferences from now on.
- 8:17SPEAKER_05: You're either a super conference or you're not.
- 8:19SPEAKER_05: I think that's gonna be the new verbiage.
- 8:22SPEAKER_05: So if the pack is going to want to try to stay competitive with that, they're gonna be looking to expand as well.
- 8:28SPEAKER_05: So that's that's what we're hopefully banking on.
- 8:32SPEAKER_05: And I think that Texas Tech is in a better position than a lot of schools to do that for the Pac-12.
- 8:41SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I agree.
- 8:42SPEAKER_03: Uh um, I think it's really a matter of with the remaining eight Big 12 schools after U T and O U leave.
- 8:50SPEAKER_03: Are they gonna band together and and stick with it?
- 8:53SPEAKER_03: Or are they just gonna say, okay, no, there's no chance this is gonna work out, and we're just gonna do our own thing.
- 8:59SPEAKER_03: Uh, to me, I think going getting out of the situation and going to the Pac-12 is the best for the brand of Texas Tech, for relevancy, for everything like that.
- 9:10SPEAKER_03: I think is our best move to go west and to join an already established power level conference.
- 9:18SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I agree.
- 9:19SPEAKER_05: And your your statement about is the are the let's just let's call this the big eight from here on.
- 9:24SPEAKER_05: Is the big eight gonna stick together?
- 9:26SPEAKER_05: Uh, that the athletic directors said they want to.
- 9:29SPEAKER_05: They said they want to, but I'm wondering if that's more cheerleader talk to kind of keep everybody's hopes, uh hopes up and and you know, eye on the prize.
- 9:37SPEAKER_05: But I think everyone is looking for option number one first.
- 9:41SPEAKER_05: I think that's everybody's kind of back pocket is to stick together.
- 9:44SPEAKER_05: Um, but we'll get more into that once we're done talking about the pack.
- 9:47SPEAKER_05: Um, I think Texas Tech is in a great spot for an audition for it because the Pac 12, they're they're a nerd conference, they have a lot of very elite academic schools.
- 10:00SPEAKER_05: And I know you're thinking Texas Tech isn't is while it's the Harvard of the Plains, it's it's not Stanford.
- 10:05SPEAKER_05: And and we have we have a phenomenal university.
- 10:08SPEAKER_05: I'm not trying to talk about us like that, but we we are your state school.
- 10:10SPEAKER_05: We are a good state school.
- 10:12SPEAKER_05: Um, we're not Stanford or or Cal.
- 10:15SPEAKER_05: But we are a tier one research university.
- 10:19SPEAKER_05: We have a ton of money funded into research project projects on campus.
- 10:24SPEAKER_05: Not to mention, we're flying up the academic boards.
- 10:27SPEAKER_05: All of our schools are getting better.
- 10:28SPEAKER_05: You look at our business school, it's going up, our engineering school is going up, our medical school.
- 10:31SPEAKER_05: We just got a vet school.
- 10:33SPEAKER_05: We have a lot to offer in the academic world, just as much as we do with the athletic world.
- 10:38SPEAKER_05: So, starting with that, I'm feeling really good about tech's uh chances because I feel like while athletics are really important, we're not exactly dealing with dealing with the SEC who'll give two flying poo-poos about academics.
- 10:50SPEAKER_05: And that's not a knock on the SEC.
- 10:52SPEAKER_05: It's just that's the pack is just gonna work differently in that sense.
- 10:55SPEAKER_03: I can understand you bringing up academics.
- 10:57SPEAKER_03: I I think it doesn't matter whatsoever because money is what matters in this type of stuff.
- 11:05SPEAKER_03: This uh, they're not looking at Texas Tech and being like, oh, they're you know, whatever, three number 300 on the Forbes list of universities or whatever.
- 11:13SPEAKER_03: We're much higher than that.
- 11:14SPEAKER_03: Or yeah, I don't know.
- 11:15SPEAKER_03: I don't know what we are, but but they're they're like not as high as Stanford's, or they're not as high as like our average or whatever.
- 11:21SPEAKER_03: So we're not gonna let them in because of academics.
- 11:23SPEAKER_03: No, they're looking at what we bring in financially to the conference and what we add that way.
- 11:28SPEAKER_03: Uh, you know, it's it's I like this move for us.
- 11:34SPEAKER_03: I think the Pac-12 would be happy to have us more from a recruiting standpoint being able to access the state of Texas and having that to their conference more than what we provide, maybe academically or even athletically.
- 11:48SPEAKER_05: Just remember that uh school presidents are what give the final thumb thumbs up on these kinds of things.
- 11:53SPEAKER_05: So I'm just saying the president of California and the president of Stanford are gonna be asking about it.
- 11:58SPEAKER_05: So they're they're gonna because they're going to keep that pedigree.
- 12:01SPEAKER_05: And that's understandable.
- 12:02SPEAKER_05: They're not as strict about it as the Big Ten, surprisingly, even though like every school in the pack is is you know big time with that.
- 12:08SPEAKER_05: Um, but they are they are they do kind of care, they care more than so the SEC or the ACC or the Big 12.
- 12:13SPEAKER_05: Um, but right back to what you're saying, let's get to the fun stuff.
- 12:18SPEAKER_05: I just wanted to get that out of the way because it's something you have to talk about with the Pac-12.
- 12:22SPEAKER_06: Sure.
- 12:22SPEAKER_05: Um, but yeah, we we offer so much to the Pac-12 on the athletic side.
- 12:27SPEAKER_05: We're one of the most valuable brands in college football.
- 12:29SPEAKER_05: We're the third most valuable brand in the state of Texas, the most football crazed state ever.
- 12:35SPEAKER_05: And no one can argue with that.
- 12:36SPEAKER_05: Look at our look at any big high school, they play in practically college stadiums.
- 12:42SPEAKER_05: So here, I pulled this off.
- 12:44SPEAKER_05: I'm gonna kind of rip off Ryan Evans real quick, uh, on Twitter.
- 12:47SPEAKER_05: Great, great, uh, great Red Raider.
- 12:49SPEAKER_05: Uh, this would immediately be the fifth largest football stadium in the conference, it'd be fourth in football attendance.
- 12:54SPEAKER_05: We would have the largest basketball arena.
- 12:57SPEAKER_05: Uh, though those numbers alone, just off a spreadsheet, looks pretty good immediately whenever you're the Pac-12, wanting to gain more interest because they're struggling with general interest.
- 13:07SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, they're really having an issue with public perception of you know their conference right now.
- 13:12SPEAKER_03: Um, and uh listen, we've always been a pro pac 12 podcast.
- 13:19SPEAKER_03: We've never said we've never said anything bad about the pac 12 ever.
- 13:23SPEAKER_03: I have always been 100 in with the pac-12.
- 13:28SPEAKER_03: Dock and tech is officially a packet a pro pac 12 podcast.
- 13:33SPEAKER_05: I've always been hashtag back the pack, unless they don't let us in.
- 13:37SPEAKER_05: And then and but no, but we're all in on the the pack, baby.
- 13:41SPEAKER_03: Absolutely.
- 13:42SPEAKER_03: Let's let's roll down the teams here because these teams would be fun as hell to play.
- 13:47SPEAKER_03: Arizona, basketball school, Arizona State, party school, Cal, Nerds, UCLA, better bear mascot than Baylor, plus Bill Walton.
- 13:59SPEAKER_03: Let's go, Colorado, possible trip to Boulder.
- 14:02SPEAKER_03: How about Oregon, Nike, Oregon State, Beavers, USC, historically good, except for some redactions.
- 14:10SPEAKER_03: We we don't like to talk about those.
- 14:12SPEAKER_03: Stanford, nerds, Utah, cooler, by you, Washington, Starbucks, Washington State, weird logo, and that's why we want to join the Pack 16.
- 14:25SPEAKER_05: Holy cow! I don't, I think I'm sold.
- 14:28SPEAKER_05: I was already sold, but man, do I want to be a part of that?
- 14:31SPEAKER_05: They're looking and they go, Texas Tech, tortillas.
- 14:34SPEAKER_05: That's the point.
- 14:35SPEAKER_05: Boom, so we're in.
- 14:38SPEAKER_05: Heck yeah, no, it dude, those are interesting matchups.
- 14:41SPEAKER_05: You know, people are kind of like concerned that is the pack 12 less interesting than the big 12 outside of some of our traditional rivalries.
- 14:49SPEAKER_05: Absolutely.
- 14:50SPEAKER_05: You can't get around it.
- 14:51SPEAKER_05: UT's our marquee game.
- 14:52SPEAKER_05: Baylor coming to town, big deal.
- 14:54SPEAKER_05: TCU coming to town, big deal.
- 14:55SPEAKER_05: The Oklahoma schools, big deal.
- 14:57SPEAKER_05: But once you get past that, no knock on those schools at all in the in Kansas and in Iowa and West Virginia.
- 15:02SPEAKER_05: But the general interest in the Jones when we're playing them just isn't on the same level.
- 15:08SPEAKER_05: So it's but we'll we'll obviously go and watch, you know, especially if we're winning.
- 15:12SPEAKER_05: If we're ranked as if it's a ranked matchup, we're gonna be there.
- 15:14SPEAKER_05: But some people are worried that we won't fill a stadium if Colorado's in town.
- 15:17SPEAKER_05: And I completely agree, disagree.
- 15:19SPEAKER_05: I think it's gonna be more like any general Big 12 game would be.
- 15:23SPEAKER_05: I don't think there's gonna be a difference there.
- 15:25SPEAKER_03: Yeah, like listen, this is kind of the argument of keeping trying to bandage together the Big 12 versus just joining the Pac-12.
- 15:33SPEAKER_03: What are you more happy about playing?
- 15:35SPEAKER_03: Are you happy about playing Iowa State or are you happy about playing Oregon?
- 15:40SPEAKER_03: I mean, that's really what it comes down to for me.
- 15:43SPEAKER_03: I think there's more interesting matchups in a post-UTOU conference in the Pac-12 than what this like glued together Big 12 would be for sure.
- 15:56SPEAKER_05: And the the general interest would would still be elevated if we are still in a true Power Five conference, yeah.
- 16:03SPEAKER_05: Like, I think we'd get over not playing those schools pretty quickly whenever we're still getting the respect, the airtime on major channels, and all that that we might lose if we just stick with the big eight.
- 16:15SPEAKER_05: So that's that even if we have to watch an 11 11 p.m.
- 16:18SPEAKER_05: games, does any red raider have a real issue with that if we're still relevant in the power zone?
- 16:24SPEAKER_05: You know, like just that'll just be a fun time at the late night bars.
- 16:27SPEAKER_05: It's just yeah, look at it in different ways.
- 16:30SPEAKER_05: So I don't I don't think as Red Raiders, we're too concerned about game time anyway, uh, as a general rule.
- 16:35SPEAKER_05: I just want what's best for Texas Tech.
- 16:37SPEAKER_05: And what's best for Texas Tech is being a part of a stable, most of most of all, storied conference, and that's the Pac-12.
- 16:46SPEAKER_05: And I mean, that's the most viable option we have outside of staying in the big eight.
- 16:51SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's like it's like to me, a a big eight conference that adds maybe Houston, Memphis, BYU, Cincy, that is like a level in between power and group of five.
- 17:07SPEAKER_03: Like that, like that's how the public perception is gonna perceive us.
- 17:10SPEAKER_03: Is we're not gonna be a power level conference, we're gonna be kind of that step below that.
- 17:15SPEAKER_03: If we join the pack, we are gonna be seen as a power level school.
- 17:20SPEAKER_03: So I I that's why I want to join the pack pack 12 instead of kind of you know bringing together some fake Big 12 with Houston and and Cincinnati and all that kind of stuff.
- 17:32SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and let's talk about the potential for Texas Tech in the Pac-12.
- 17:36SPEAKER_05: Think about what we can be.
- 17:38SPEAKER_05: Our entire existence, dang near, has been where UT's shadow.
- 17:42SPEAKER_05: No matter how you cut it, we've always been with UT's thought.
- 17:47SPEAKER_05: You know, like if we're thinking about Texas Tech, you're probably gonna think about UT too.
- 17:50SPEAKER_05: You know, you're gonna be thinking about AM and all that.
- 17:52SPEAKER_05: We're gonna we're gonna pull an AM and try to separate ourselves from that.
- 17:56SPEAKER_05: You know, we're gonna we're gonna try to build our own brand, we're gonna stand on our own two feet.
- 18:00SPEAKER_05: And I think Texas Tech is total, total, totally able to do that.
- 18:04SPEAKER_05: And I'm sorry, I'm gonna talk.
- 18:06SPEAKER_03: No, it just it gives us an opportunity to actually compete for a conference championship.
- 18:13SPEAKER_03: Like I know it's you know, I know we say Big 12 right now, we can compete in basketball, we can compete in baseball, all that kind of stuff.
- 18:21SPEAKER_03: We don't, we're not competitive in the biggest sport there is right now, and I think with the way we're moving with football, I think it's in a positive projection.
- 18:30SPEAKER_03: Um so I just think it's easier to compete with an Oregon and USC versus an Oklahoma and a Texas.
- 18:37SPEAKER_03: I just do.
- 18:38SPEAKER_05: Completely agree.
- 18:39SPEAKER_05: Or I think our schedule immediately looks a lot more winnable.
- 18:43SPEAKER_05: I feel like you find more wins on the football schedule and the basketball schedule, you know.
- 18:47SPEAKER_05: You and it's a good baseball conference as well.
- 18:50SPEAKER_05: So I think all of our brands can still keep stepping up.
- 18:54SPEAKER_05: It's there's no, I don't think there's a regression between the Pac-12.
- 18:57SPEAKER_05: I don't think people's perception of Texas tech drops from switching from the Big 12 to the Pac-12.
- 19:03SPEAKER_05: I don't think, as an on an individual level, I don't think people think less of tech for that.
- 19:09SPEAKER_05: If anything, I think we get a boost for being able to survive this fallout by being picked to join a power five conference.
- 19:18SPEAKER_05: I think that shows what the world thinks of Texas Tech in a really good way.
- 19:23SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no, absolutely, I agree 100%.
- 19:26SPEAKER_03: Um, let's talk about who, because we're gonna have to partner with somebody to go to uh if we're gonna move to the Pac-12, or just in general, who would you want to partner with out of the remaining teams of the Big 12 uh to move conferences with?
- 19:45SPEAKER_05: I think you and I will agree on this 100%.
- 19:48SPEAKER_05: It's our mirror image in Oklahoma, Oklahoma State.
- 19:50SPEAKER_05: I I bet I bet you Oklahoma State and Texas Tech are on the phone with each other all the time right now.
- 19:56SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean, they're exact identicals, except one is in Oklahoma, one is in Texas.
- 20:01SPEAKER_03: And to me, Oklahoma State is the strongest school in the Big 12 remaining after OU and UT in terms of brand recognition.
- 20:10SPEAKER_03: So um, you know, I think I'd also I'd also think about, you know, possibly out of that Iowa State.
- 20:19SPEAKER_03: I'd like to, I'd like to partner with Iowa State if we're moving, because if we're to go into pack, I don't think they go pack 14, I think they go pack 16.
- 20:26SPEAKER_03: So I think they add not only Texas Tech and Oklahoma State, but they'd have to add two more.
- 20:31SPEAKER_03: And so that could be, you know, Oklahoma State is number one right here.
- 20:35SPEAKER_03: We need to be with Oklahoma State hand in hand through this whole process.
- 20:38SPEAKER_03: But I think if you're looking after that, maybe another couple teams, Iowa State would be there, Kansas State would be there, Houston may be there, Baylor may be there for me.
- 20:50SPEAKER_05: I you and I also talk about this before the pod.
- 20:53SPEAKER_05: I would prefer we kick things off by just going with Oklahoma State.
- 20:58SPEAKER_05: Yeah, because here's my reason we get to be we get to cut ourselves off from the Big 12 as the better brands, and that'll help with recruiting immediately.
- 21:09SPEAKER_05: I'm not trying to you know toss down the other big eight.
- 21:11SPEAKER_05: Um, and plus Texas will be I mean, Texas Tech will be the only team in Texas, and Oklahoma State will be the only team in Oklahoma, and I think we both look at each other and say, How great does that sound?
- 21:23SPEAKER_05: So, and I I know wherever you add Iowa State to that mix, you're like, but they're not in either of those states.
- 21:29SPEAKER_05: But if you're adding Iowa State, who comes after that?
- 21:33SPEAKER_05: Um, I I just don't know if that legacy is there, but I I would definitely add them into the three or four, um, because I just wouldn't want really want to bring TCU or Baylor, is really all it is.
- 21:45SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I feel that.
- 21:46SPEAKER_03: The adding the private schools, I you know, I would be just fine with TCU or Baylor going down a level and us staying at the power level.
- 21:55SPEAKER_03: Um, I don't uh we've talked about this before when we were talking about uh how we perceive Each Big 12 team through RIs.
- 22:03SPEAKER_03: Baylor and TCU just don't add a lot to a conference.
- 22:07SPEAKER_03: And so financially, anything.
- 22:09SPEAKER_03: They don't have a large fan base, everything like that.
- 22:11SPEAKER_03: Small school.
- 22:12SPEAKER_03: Small school.
- 22:13SPEAKER_03: We we at Oklahoma State with our, you know, by our side through this whole process.
- 22:17SPEAKER_03: I think we're okay.
- 22:19SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and that that kind of brings me back to why the Pac-12 would want Texas Tech.
- 22:23SPEAKER_05: We're a huge school.
- 22:24SPEAKER_05: Our student body is enormous.
- 22:26SPEAKER_05: That means a huge alumni base as well.
- 22:28SPEAKER_05: You know, and once you get into Texas Tech, you get Texas.
- 22:32SPEAKER_05: You get to come over here and recruit in Texas.
- 22:34SPEAKER_05: We get to let you into the gate, you know, and plus you get the Texas media.
- 22:38SPEAKER_05: I'm not I'm not talking about just necessarily media market, but a lot of TVs in Texas will be turned tuned in.
- 22:45SPEAKER_05: We're not talking about the Lubbock Metro, we're talking about Texas because our our alumni base is across the entire state and country, but of course, mostly across the state.
- 22:53SPEAKER_05: So you get a lot of TV sets in Houston, Dallas, Austin, as soon as you add us.
- 22:58SPEAKER_05: So and it's not gonna be just us watching in Texas.
- 23:01SPEAKER_05: Obviously, you know, UT and AM fans and all that, they're gonna be tuning in to watch the to cheer against us.
- 23:06SPEAKER_05: It's gonna happen.
- 23:07SPEAKER_05: So I I think we're just so desirable.
- 23:10SPEAKER_05: And obviously, with Oklahoma State, you get Tulsa, OKC, and like DFW.
- 23:14SPEAKER_05: So it's those are two really enticing things because once you go beyond those two schools, you get to what Kansas State, Iowa State.
- 23:24SPEAKER_05: I I I I'm not trying to brag on those schools.
- 23:27SPEAKER_05: I do hope KU and Iowa State both go to the Big Ten because I don't want to see any Big 12 team get screwed because of what what OU and UT did.
- 23:34SPEAKER_03: Except maybe TCU and Baylor.
- 23:36SPEAKER_03: That would be fine.
- 23:37SPEAKER_03: More so Baylor, obviously.
- 23:39SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 23:40SPEAKER_05: Um, but I just I don't want it to be you accept Texas Tech, Oklahoma State, K State, Iowa State, or it's nothing.
- 23:51SPEAKER_05: I just I don't want it to be that way.
- 23:53SPEAKER_05: I want it to be, hey, we're we're pretty much the new faces of the Big 12 now that they're gone.
- 23:59SPEAKER_05: Do you not want us?
- 24:00SPEAKER_05: Do you not want the second best choices in the state, you know?
- 24:04SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no, and I think it's I I think there's really not anything to worry about in terms of Texas Tech, because I think after UTNOU, us and Oklahoma State are the most desirable of the remaining schools, and you know, geographically and uh maybe it just makes more sense for Kansas and for Iowa State, they fit in better with the Big Ten anyway, and Kansas State too.
- 24:27SPEAKER_03: You know, like I I'm not gonna say we fit in perfectly with the pack, but in terms of like uh just being a more desirable program right now, I think it's us and Oklahoma State in a tier of their own.
- 24:41SPEAKER_03: I agree.
- 24:42SPEAKER_05: I think if we do this weird tape together big eight thing, I think we're the two bases.
- 24:46SPEAKER_05: I think we're the new UT and OU when it comes to revenue and all that.
- 24:50SPEAKER_05: And that's not good, and that's not good.
- 24:52SPEAKER_03: That's not good if we're the new UT and OU.
- 24:54SPEAKER_03: Like it just isn't.
- 24:56SPEAKER_03: It's not sustainable, you know.
- 24:57SPEAKER_05: While while it might be nice to have that kind of supremacy and and and weight in the conference itself, it's not sustainable.
- 25:05SPEAKER_05: We just we just we're we've never been that program.
- 25:08SPEAKER_05: Um we'll we'll always be, and I mean, I'm not gonna say we're always be that, but our our reputation is the middle road program, you know, we're the we're the we're what 80% of the country is, you know.
- 25:20SPEAKER_05: Uh we're we're we're not bad, we're not, but we're not powerhouses, you know.
- 25:24SPEAKER_03: Yeah, so yeah, that's kind of where we roll with Oklahoma State.
- 25:27SPEAKER_03: For sure, for sure.
- 25:28SPEAKER_03: And so I I guess this would this would affect recruiting as well if we did move over to the pack.
- 25:35SPEAKER_03: And I wanted to talk a little bit about that with you.
- 25:37SPEAKER_03: Um, I I think I think we lose a lot of Texas if we go to the Pac 12, and that is a downside of it, but I do think we start recruiting West Coast and doing all that sort of stuff, uh, and not so much Texas.
- 25:53SPEAKER_05: I think I have to disagree with that.
- 25:55SPEAKER_05: I think I think if we go to the Pac-12, we become the Pac 12 school in Texas, and that's a that's something you can sell.
- 26:02SPEAKER_05: Look, we're not gonna be getting the recruits UT, AM, OU are gonna get, but that's how it is right now.
- 26:08SPEAKER_05: We're not going for those kids, we're not going for the five stars.
- 26:12SPEAKER_05: We're trying to steal some four stars here and there, but we're not going for the very, very best.
- 26:16SPEAKER_05: Um, it's it would be a waste of resources.
- 26:19SPEAKER_05: So, with with being in the Pac-12, you get to sell that.
- 26:22SPEAKER_05: Hey, we're gonna we're this, we're in this cool conference, we're gonna be in LA, we're gonna be in Seattle, we're gonna be playing the Trojans.
- 26:29SPEAKER_05: So, you want to come over here and be in this unique situation where you're not, you know, going uh going to Tuscaloosa.
- 26:38SPEAKER_05: I'm not that bad example, Starkville or Knoxville, you know, don't you want to kind of don't you want to go sh be in the bright lights of LA kind of thing?
- 26:46SPEAKER_05: I think that's a selling point.
- 26:48SPEAKER_03: I think playing in California is kind of a cool thing.
- 26:51SPEAKER_03: It's a cool thing for that side of the country.
- 26:54SPEAKER_03: I don't think it's a cool thing for Texas recruits.
- 26:57SPEAKER_03: And I think, yeah, I do agree with you that UT and AM already get the top recruits in Texas, OU, LSU.
- 27:04SPEAKER_03: They already get the top recruits in Texas.
- 27:06SPEAKER_03: We're not trying to get those, but what we what we might get in the Pac-12 is more wins, and winning always leads to better recruits.
- 27:17SPEAKER_03: So I guess I agree with that, but at least initially, we will have to we're we're not gonna get the recruits in Texas because they're gonna say, hey, we are now in the SEC.
- 27:28SPEAKER_03: The SEC is clearly the best conference in football, so we are going to go to one of UT A and M R O U.
- 27:35SPEAKER_03: Does that change our modern landscape at all, though?
- 27:38SPEAKER_03: Do you not do you not we're not gonna guys?
- 27:40SPEAKER_03: No, we're not we're not getting like five-star guys, but we are still getting some three stars and occasionally a good four-star guy.
- 27:47SPEAKER_03: Even they will start saying, Okay, no, Texas Tech is, you know, they're not the SEC, they're the Texas school that's not in the SEC.
- 27:55SPEAKER_05: But you know, at the same time the good thing is, I do think at the same time, we're the Texas school that's in the Pac-12, and I think that's a better sell than they're the the Texas school that's in the the new defunct Big 12.
- 28:07SPEAKER_03: It's it's a better sell if that recruit is going with us or Baylor or TCU.
- 28:13SPEAKER_03: You know, it's not a better sell if we're going against UT or AM.
- 28:18SPEAKER_05: Right.
- 28:18SPEAKER_05: I I do think there's gonna be a clear split between that, but again, I think that's kind of what the reality of it is now.
- 28:25SPEAKER_05: I don't think that changes it that much.
- 28:27SPEAKER_05: I do, but I do think I think it helps our recruiting more than it hurts than in our current situation.
- 28:34SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 28:35SPEAKER_03: I think I've uh either way, I'm happy if we are in the Pac-12.
- 28:40SPEAKER_03: So so at this point, with how much UTNOU have screwed us with this, um, I would be very happy to be in the Pac-12.
- 28:49SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah, we we we haven't really touched on that yet.
- 28:52SPEAKER_05: So I think you and I are kind of in the boat that we don't want this to like kind of rubber band back.
- 28:59SPEAKER_05: I don't I think you and I both want UTNOU gone.
- 29:03SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean, at this point it's kind of the bridge is burned with those two schools, and and lit like I'm I'm one of the biggest UT haters there is.
- 29:12SPEAKER_03: Uh, this is despicable what they've pulled on us.
- 29:16SPEAKER_03: I mean, truly, they truly only care about themselves.
- 29:21SPEAKER_03: And they've always had that mentality, like it's it's just we're Texas, like we're gonna do us.
- 29:28SPEAKER_03: They've always had that arrogance to them, but this is like a new level of low.
- 29:33SPEAKER_03: I mean, to drop this on us and to just completely just ruin the Big 12 while they already ruined the Big 12 with their Longhorn network and made AM and Nebraska and all them leave.
- 29:47SPEAKER_03: I mean, now they've truly ruined the Big 12.
- 29:49SPEAKER_05: They got to customize this conference however they wanted, and then they turned out to ruin it, and they're like, Okay, never mind, bye.
- 29:58SPEAKER_05: So they single-handedly put eight teams in jeopardy, eight of them.
- 30:04SPEAKER_05: Yeah, eight teams with passionate fan bases that are just like you and me and the listeners on on their podcast right now, talking about the same things, how upset they are about this.
- 30:14SPEAKER_05: But this is by far the scummiest thing UT has ever done.
- 30:18SPEAKER_05: Like the AD said, they said, We are not surprised and disgusted with UT, but we're disappointed in OU.
- 30:25SPEAKER_05: So that's that's the that's the feeling across the conference, and I think the fans feel that as well because no one's surprised, but oh, obviously, OU was the disappointment with not pushing back on it, you know, and well, or maybe leading it.
- 30:36SPEAKER_03: So I'm really starting to wonder who who was the leader in this move.
- 30:41SPEAKER_03: Was it UT or OU?
- 30:43SPEAKER_03: Like who who do you think was the driving force in making this decision?
- 30:47SPEAKER_05: I think it's more so OU.
- 30:49SPEAKER_05: I know the easy pick is UT just because they're an easy bad guy to immediately paint, but I think OU is getting frustrated that they're not winning in playoff games, that they're getting these 11 a.m.
- 31:02SPEAKER_05: games that keeps coming back up, even though they signed that TV contract.
- 31:06SPEAKER_05: It wasn't the Big 12 that just signed it for them.
- 31:08SPEAKER_05: Um, and yeah, I think it comes down to recruiting and TV times.
- 31:13SPEAKER_05: And I think obviously uh they want the money too.
- 31:17SPEAKER_05: That's obviously a huge part about it.
- 31:18SPEAKER_05: They think I think they see that the landscape's changing, especially now that ESBN has exclusive rights to the SEC.
- 31:24SPEAKER_05: I think they just they also wanted in on that.
- 31:26SPEAKER_05: And they told UT, hey, let's go make this happen and make stupid money.
- 31:31SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and I I have a tough time with that, and I understand uh not being able to you know get over that Alabama or that LSU wins a championship in the last few years or whoever, any of that.
- 31:46SPEAKER_03: But to me, Oklahoma and Texas already get a top 10 recruiting class every single year.
- 31:54SPEAKER_03: This isn't just because they go to the SEC, they're gonna get the same, I mean, the same level of recruits, honestly.
- 32:03SPEAKER_03: The UT has a top 10 class every single year and they disappoint every single year for what they should be.
- 32:09SPEAKER_03: So I don't understand this move from a perspective of how how are we gonna do in this conference because now you're competing with these other unbelievable schools.
- 32:22SPEAKER_03: I I think this only hurts UT athletically.
- 32:26SPEAKER_05: I I I think OU winning the Big 12 six years in a row was detrimental to this.
- 32:34SPEAKER_05: I think OU having zero challengers really hurt the perception of the conference because once OU loses a game, they are at huge risk to not be in the playoff because of the reputation.
- 32:47SPEAKER_05: While an SEC team can lose one, maybe even two in the even in this four-team playoff.
- 32:53SPEAKER_05: So with it moving the 12 teams, they're probably thinking, hey, you know, we're not gonna win literally every single game.
- 32:59SPEAKER_05: We do we're we're not immortal.
- 33:01SPEAKER_05: So instead of losing to K State, even if they're good, let's go lose to an equal Mississippi State team.
- 33:07SPEAKER_05: Yeah, but it'll be called a quality loss rather than losing to oh the lowly Big 12.
- 33:12SPEAKER_05: So I think they might be looking at, hey, we can get into the playoff every stinking year now, because half the teams will be the SEC in the playoff now.
- 33:20SPEAKER_05: The SEC has played 4D chess with all this, and we are all just in their house and it's their rules right now.
- 33:27SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that makes sense.
- 33:28SPEAKER_03: I mean, I think the 12-team playoff was also a big factor in this decision.
- 33:33SPEAKER_03: Uh, when that was announced, uh, that they were moving to 12 teams and that the SEC saw that, and they were like, okay, well, we can have a four-loss team and still make a playoff.
- 33:43SPEAKER_03: We're gonna have four to six teams in this thing potentially with it with UTNOU joining this conference.
- 33:48SPEAKER_03: So um, man, I'm just disappointed.
- 33:52SPEAKER_03: I just I I hate this for I I don't think it's gonna be an issue for Texas Tech.
- 33:56SPEAKER_03: I think we're gonna end up fine through all this whole thing, but I do feel bad for the schools that are currently in the Big 12 that are not gonna have it as easy.
- 34:06SPEAKER_05: I do too, even if we don't really like them, like like TCU and Baylor.
- 34:10SPEAKER_05: I think Baylor's like an enormous risk right now.
- 34:12SPEAKER_05: Yeah, um, so I think Baylor and K-State are the two that are in the biggest trouble.
- 34:17SPEAKER_05: Um, and I do really feel bad for them.
- 34:19SPEAKER_05: I really do.
- 34:20SPEAKER_05: Um, but it's it's just a crappy situation.
- 34:22SPEAKER_05: And obviously, UT's only doing this for the money, they don't give a single rat's behind about uh schools that have been with them for 80 plus years, you know, partnered with them through all this.
- 34:33SPEAKER_05: And they would, it's just it is so frustrating as a fan because you want to take it as an emotional hit, but at the same time, they're gonna tell you it's just business, so yeah, and that's the unfortunate thing about what college sports have become.
- 34:46SPEAKER_03: Um, and it started, you can blame whoever with the Longhorn Network and AM leaving.
- 34:53SPEAKER_03: It started with that, it started with AM leaving all of their rivals and it becoming strictly a business decision.
- 35:02SPEAKER_03: That is what is leading to all of this, and so that's disappointing because I do want to play AM, I do want to play UT, I do want to play OU every single year.
- 35:12SPEAKER_03: I love those games with the rivalry with the people that we grew up with that ended up going to different universities.
- 35:18SPEAKER_03: There's gonna be none of that with Texas Tech now, and that is so unfortunate.
- 35:24SPEAKER_05: It is, it's but that's a thing of the past.
- 35:26SPEAKER_05: Like Oklahoma State is having the same exact conversation right now.
- 35:28SPEAKER_05: They're like, Bedlam's done, you know, it it's and that's their biggest game of the year.
- 35:32SPEAKER_05: So they're thinking the same thing, like our marquee games are gone.
- 35:36SPEAKER_05: So we're we're in the same boat, man, but it's it's it's strictly business now.
- 35:40SPEAKER_05: Um, and you know, AM is like a winner and a loser in this, you know, they did this get away from UT and it was working out for them.
- 35:46SPEAKER_05: And now UT they of AM officially won the breakup, you know, now because now UT is crawling back to them.
- 35:52SPEAKER_05: Like you can absolutely say that.
- 35:54SPEAKER_05: They're looking at AM saying, crap, I guess we better go with them, you know.
- 35:59SPEAKER_05: So AM obviously is like, uh now we're now we're gonna have to compete with UT again, but at the same time, they're gonna be like, that lone star showdown game is gonna make us stupid money, and it's gonna make them more relevant in the state again.
- 36:11SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it sucks.
- 36:13SPEAKER_03: This whole thing sucks.
- 36:15SPEAKER_03: Um, but I I I like there's you know, there is hope, there's absolutely hope with where we're gonna end up.
- 36:22SPEAKER_03: And I the more I think about it, the more I'm like, you know, if we join the pack, I'm happy.
- 36:27SPEAKER_03: I'm so happy with with being able to uh, and especially if we join Oklahoma State in moving conferences, we still remain some continuity, but uh, you know, and then you get to play teams like Oregon, USC, U CLA, all those, you know, type of teams.
- 36:42SPEAKER_03: And and with the way our basketball program's going, our football is going to be more competitive, our baseball is always gonna be competitive no matter what conference we're in, basketball, the same deal.
- 36:52SPEAKER_03: So I'm not worried about Texas Tech sports and where we end up, but uh this this was definitely a shock.
- 36:59SPEAKER_05: For sure.
- 36:59SPEAKER_05: I I'd let's just look at it as a new beginning.
- 37:02SPEAKER_05: Um, I I think this can easily become a blessing for Texas Tech because yeah, we'll always get crap from UT and AM, but at least we won't have to deal with them anymore.
- 37:11SPEAKER_05: You know, it's they'll always be like, oh, they're in the pack 14, we're in the SUC.
- 37:15SPEAKER_05: I'll be like, well, yeah, we finished with the 10 wins and y'all finish with six, you know.
- 37:19SPEAKER_05: So cool, yeah.
- 37:21SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no doubt, no doubt.
- 37:23SPEAKER_03: I um like I know some tech fans are super ready to just get away from UT, and I'm kind of getting to that point.
- 37:30SPEAKER_03: I'm happy, I'm happy to get away from the Longhorns, get away from that arrogant fan base, get away from all of their decisions that affect us that will no longer affect us, right?
- 37:40SPEAKER_03: So that part of it, yeah, stability.
- 37:43SPEAKER_03: I'm ready for that.
- 37:44SPEAKER_03: I'm ready to just move on and just you know get it over with.
- 37:47SPEAKER_03: Me too, man.
- 37:48SPEAKER_05: So I I I think we made it clear that the pack 12 is where we want to go, and I don't think every tech fan agrees with that.
- 37:56SPEAKER_05: Um, I'd be interested to hear why, if any listener disagrees, because there's there's there's no right answer right now.
- 38:03SPEAKER_05: But if I'm a betting man, I think President Scooby and and Kirby Hope cut are on the phone with the Pac-12.
- 38:08SPEAKER_05: I because I really don't think you're exploring any other Power Five conference.
- 38:13SPEAKER_03: You can't, it's a loss in my eyes if you don't join the Pac-12 at this point.
- 38:18SPEAKER_03: So sorry if you're hearing any background noise.
- 38:20SPEAKER_03: I'm grabbing another Brewski because this is the 50th episode of Talking Tech Pod, and the energy needs to be brought back up because this was kind of a shock to all of Texas Tech, but we are still enjoying that we have this podcast and that we are so grateful for everybody that is, you know, listened and everybody that's following us on our social media platforms and everything like that.
- 38:43SPEAKER_03: We really do appreciate all of y'all.
- 38:45SPEAKER_05: Absolutely.
- 38:46SPEAKER_05: We don't we never thought that it would be like this.
- 38:48SPEAKER_05: So we're just having fun with it.
- 38:50SPEAKER_05: It'll just it's a it's just a serious point in Texas Tech's history.
- 38:53SPEAKER_05: I don't think we've been at such a pinnacle point since the Southwest conference fell apart.
- 38:57SPEAKER_05: I think everyone's holding their breath.
- 38:59SPEAKER_05: But the good news is I think Texas Tech's in a better position now than we were whenever the Southwest Conference fell apart.
- 39:06SPEAKER_05: I think we're a little, I think we're we're a prettier girl at the dance now than we were back then.
- 39:11SPEAKER_05: Because I think we are at real risk being left out with Baylor.
- 39:14SPEAKER_05: So before.
- 39:16SPEAKER_05: But now we we hold our own without how much money we pour into our sports, how many fans we have, you know, the facilities, it's we're we're we're a good looking chick.
- 39:26SPEAKER_03: Yeah, we're we're definitely gonna be fine.
- 39:29SPEAKER_03: I I truly believe that.
- 39:31SPEAKER_03: I truly don't think Texas Tech is gonna regress to a level that of irrelevancy, really.
- 39:36SPEAKER_03: So let's move on.
- 39:39SPEAKER_03: Let's move on from uh unless you had anything.
- 39:42SPEAKER_03: Did you have anything else to talk about realignment?
- 39:44SPEAKER_05: Well, you know, you don't want to talk about what could happen with the other two with the band band-aid eight, or I mean, I okay, we can go into that.
- 39:52SPEAKER_03: We can we can go into a possible uh band-aid glued together big eight kind of team.
- 40:00SPEAKER_03: Um I guess what are the teams you add?
- 40:04SPEAKER_05: Well, I think we gotta initially talk about how this is the second best option.
- 40:08SPEAKER_05: Um, I know I'm sure a lot of people are gonna be saying that maybe the American's the better option after that, but I don't think so.
- 40:13SPEAKER_05: I think if you want to you can retain the government of the Big 12 and the the weight that it holds in the NCAA, apparently we would remain in autonomous five, which means power five.
- 40:23SPEAKER_05: And that that grants you special privileges.
- 40:25SPEAKER_05: So the big the big eight plus two or four is still a better situation to join the American, especially if you choose the right teams.
- 40:33SPEAKER_05: I think you could put together a decent league, probably the fifth best.
- 40:37SPEAKER_05: And that's that beats taking a true regression down.
- 40:42SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 40:43SPEAKER_03: No, I agree.
- 40:44SPEAKER_03: This was clearly the second option if the Pac-12 decides not to expand or anything like that.
- 40:51SPEAKER_03: Um, kind of piecing together, adding a BYU, a Cincinnati, a Houston, whatever UCF, whatever you can at this point to remain relevant um to the other Power Five level.
- 41:06SPEAKER_03: Because I guess I guess we would still be considered a power level conference.
- 41:10SPEAKER_03: I don't know how many people are actually thinking that.
- 41:13SPEAKER_03: You know, that's why I kind of am wary about doing that.
- 41:17SPEAKER_05: Yeah, the the conference would immediately lose a lot of respect.
- 41:19SPEAKER_05: It would have to be earned back, you know.
- 41:21SPEAKER_05: I I think obviously we're gonna be that conference that got pillaged a bit, but I think we're gonna have to, you know, box it out a lot of black eyes.
- 41:28SPEAKER_05: And because I do think there's potential to compete with the ACC and the Pac-12 with that core, and I do think it's probably more stable than our Big 12 now before we knew this was all gonna happen.
- 41:40SPEAKER_05: There's no UT, there's no OU.
- 41:42SPEAKER_05: There's so it's there's no team that's always got wandering eyes because they make that much more money than everybody else that they think they're too good for everybody else.
- 41:50SPEAKER_05: I think it's a pretty even playing field for the most part.
- 41:54SPEAKER_03: I mean, I just don't think we have those teams that compete at the top of the top.
- 41:58SPEAKER_03: Uh in in every every single conference in the power level has a team that is consistently really good uh at football, especially.
- 42:08SPEAKER_03: I mean, you talk about even the Pac-12 has Oregon, USC.
- 42:11SPEAKER_03: You know, they're at least a brand that is well known to succeed in college football.
- 42:17SPEAKER_03: Big Ten with Ohio State.
- 42:18SPEAKER_03: Uh, the ACC has Clemson before Clemson got elite, they had Florida State, all that kind of stuff.
- 42:25SPEAKER_03: So the S and the SEC, of course, you know, Bama and all that, but I just don't think we have those teams to stay relevant.
- 42:34SPEAKER_05: I think it'd be a conference full of parody.
- 42:36SPEAKER_05: I think it'd be a solid core, like it'd be like middle of the road, everybody else.
- 42:41SPEAKER_05: So whenever you know, bowl games come around, there's some respect to be earned back.
- 42:44SPEAKER_05: And remember, if we're going to a 12-team uh playoff, I bet that new Big 12 puts in a champion nearly every year.
- 42:51SPEAKER_05: I do still think that would still get more respect than the Mountain West, the Mac, the Sunbelt Conference of USA.
- 42:57SPEAKER_05: Easy.
- 42:58SPEAKER_05: So I think they're still we're still sending somebody to the playoff every single year.
- 43:01SPEAKER_05: And I think some of the Big 12 teams are thinking, hey, now that OU is finally gone, we actually have a chance to do that together.
- 43:09SPEAKER_05: And the thing is, we'll actually alternate.
- 43:11SPEAKER_05: OU can't hold the chips the whole time because no one in this conference has the ability to sustain that kind of winning percentage.
- 43:18SPEAKER_05: We're all up and down teams left, you know.
- 43:22SPEAKER_05: I mean, not that UT was a pinnacle, you know, they just they they could not exactly keep it together themselves, but you know what I'm trying to say.
- 43:29SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 43:30SPEAKER_03: I and like I said earlier in the pod, we would be that kind of weird level between a group of five conference and a power level conference at that point.
- 43:39SPEAKER_03: So that's why it's clearly to me option number two.
- 43:43SPEAKER_03: Uh, it is better than joining a G five team like a like an American or a G five conference like an American or a Mountain West or something like that.
- 43:51SPEAKER_03: So, yes, I do agree with you that it's better than regressing to that level.
- 43:55SPEAKER_05: Yes, I I do.
- 43:56SPEAKER_05: I I think I think option number three going to the American, it's the Best of the worst.
- 44:01SPEAKER_05: You're uh you're you are accepting a regression at that point.
- 44:04SPEAKER_05: I really hope Texas Tech is not in that situation.
- 44:07SPEAKER_05: But if we are, I do expect we're with pretty much a lot of the other Big 12 teams.
- 44:12SPEAKER_05: I think we're there with TCU and Baylor and maybe Oklahoma State, if if that's really what it comes to.
- 44:17SPEAKER_05: So at least we'll still have that familiarity.
- 44:20SPEAKER_05: And the way to look at that is Texas Tech will still be Texas Tech.
- 44:23SPEAKER_05: We just won't have the prestigious conference behind us.
- 44:26SPEAKER_05: But we should still be able to sell our brand better than most of the any of the other American schools.
- 44:31SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 44:32SPEAKER_03: If we're not a perennial contender in the American, I don't, you know, I don't know what I'd do.
- 44:37SPEAKER_03: We may just we may just get rid of this podcast altogether.
- 44:41SPEAKER_05: But hopefully this turns into a true already is a true pack 14 slash 16 podcast.
- 44:48SPEAKER_05: Always been.
- 44:49SPEAKER_03: Always been.
- 44:50SPEAKER_03: I don't know what any of you are talking about.
- 44:53SPEAKER_05: We're always about pack after dark.
- 44:54SPEAKER_05: I don't really do not care what the primetime game is.
- 44:57SPEAKER_05: Prime time is really at 11 p.m.
- 44:59SPEAKER_05: I don't care what anyone else says.
- 45:01SPEAKER_03: Oh, you oh you complains about 11 a.m.
- 45:04SPEAKER_03: How about 11 p.m.?
- 45:06SPEAKER_03: That is the elite time you want to be on.
- 45:09SPEAKER_03: All right.
- 45:10SPEAKER_03: Honestly, though, honestly, though, if Bill Walden is calling our games, I am so freaking happy.
- 45:16SPEAKER_03: That's a that's a solid basketball conference, too.
- 45:18SPEAKER_03: So it is.
- 45:19SPEAKER_03: The Pac-12 is respectable.
- 45:20SPEAKER_03: Hey, basically, they were they were crapped on because they didn't they're they're like the conference of champions, quote unquote, and then they had the least amount of teams of every power level conference that made the NCA tournament.
- 45:32SPEAKER_03: Well, guess what?
- 45:33SPEAKER_03: They all advanced further than everybody, they had more teams in the Sweet 16 than everybody did.
- 45:39SPEAKER_03: So Pac 12 podcasts, pac-12 podcasts over here.
- 45:44SPEAKER_05: This is pro Pac-12.
- 45:47SPEAKER_05: And one thing that I didn't mention about TechSech, you know, Pac-12 is huge into Olympic sports.
- 45:52SPEAKER_05: Thankfully, we have an amazing track and field team.
- 45:56SPEAKER_05: So that's just yet another thing to sell to the Pac-12 because they really do care about that.
- 46:00SPEAKER_05: And because that's traditional college sports right there.
- 46:03SPEAKER_05: And I'm excited to say we have a national championship just a couple years ago, Pac-12.
- 46:08SPEAKER_05: Come on, pick up the phone.
- 46:10SPEAKER_05: Scooby's calling.
- 46:12SPEAKER_03: Scooby.
- 46:14SPEAKER_03: Scooby is calling, and he is saying, listen, we're Texas Tech, let us in.
- 46:21SPEAKER_05: Hey, they tried to get us there 10 years ago.
- 46:23SPEAKER_03: Yeah, hey, we're still here.
- 46:25SPEAKER_03: We're still come here.
- 46:26SPEAKER_03: Come on.
- 46:27SPEAKER_03: We're right here.
- 46:27SPEAKER_03: We're right here.
- 46:28SPEAKER_03: Phone's ringing.
- 46:29SPEAKER_03: Phone's ringing.
- 46:30SPEAKER_05: Because technically, conferences can't call schools.
- 46:32SPEAKER_05: It has to be the other way around legally.
- 46:34SPEAKER_03: Okay, okay.
- 46:36SPEAKER_03: All right.
- 46:36SPEAKER_03: Final thoughts on conference realignment.
- 46:41SPEAKER_05: Uh, it's it's a very uncertain time for Texas Tech.
- 46:44SPEAKER_05: I don't blame you for being worried.
- 46:46SPEAKER_05: Just know that we have a lot to offer.
- 46:49SPEAKER_05: Um, don't do not be worried.
- 46:51SPEAKER_05: Texas Tech has been through a lot.
- 46:52SPEAKER_05: We clawed our way from the freaking border conference with New Mexico and UTEP to the to the Power Five level.
- 46:59SPEAKER_05: So do do not worry, y'all.
- 47:01SPEAKER_05: We are the third, we're we're we're a premier uh program in the state.
- 47:05SPEAKER_05: Anyone will be lucky to have us.
- 47:08SPEAKER_03: No doubt that was beautifully put.
- 47:10SPEAKER_03: Let's move on to positive stuff because no matter what happens next season, we're probably playing in the Big 12.
- 47:18SPEAKER_03: So we are on some preseason college football watch lists.
- 47:23SPEAKER_03: We have some dudes on our football team that made a ton of watch lists.
- 47:28SPEAKER_03: I was surprised by how many players we have that are on the national stage getting this recognition from the national media right now.
- 47:37SPEAKER_03: So I'm gonna run through some of those right now.
- 47:40SPEAKER_03: Maxwell Award, which is the most outstanding college football player, Eric Ezukama made that list.
- 47:46SPEAKER_03: Wide receiver, obviously, extremely elite.
- 47:49SPEAKER_03: He is the only guy that has made two of these preseason watch lists.
- 47:53SPEAKER_03: The Bolitnikov, the best wide receiver of the year.
- 47:56SPEAKER_03: Of course, Michael Crabtree won it twice, the only player to ever do so.
- 48:00SPEAKER_03: We have two guys that are on the watch list in Eric Ezukama and Kalen Geiger, the Troy transfer wide receiver, getting some love in the preseason, man.
- 48:10SPEAKER_03: This uh this blew my mind that we have two guys on the Bolitnikov watch list.
- 48:15SPEAKER_05: Wide receiver you.
- 48:17SPEAKER_05: I mean, come on.
- 48:18SPEAKER_05: Um it's it's great to hear, but I'm not surprised, man.
- 48:21SPEAKER_05: We put absolute studs on the wings.
- 48:24SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I wasn't surprised by Easy.
- 48:26SPEAKER_03: What I was surprised was by Kalen Geiger, and I know he had some hype going in to this season, and he was a big time on the transfer portal.
- 48:35SPEAKER_03: A lot of teams wanted him, and we got him.
- 48:37SPEAKER_03: But for him to be named at this award, I mean, this goes to the best wide receiver in the nation.
- 48:43SPEAKER_03: So we now have two guys that are looked upon as being one of the best wide receivers in the nation.
- 48:50SPEAKER_05: Steven, listen to how sneaky we are right now.
- 48:53SPEAKER_05: I'm telling you.
- 48:54SPEAKER_05: We are quietly getting attention from the premium awards, but nobody's talking about us.
- 49:01SPEAKER_05: Everyone's picking us ninth.
- 49:03SPEAKER_05: This is the perfect time to come up and snatch it, man.
- 49:07SPEAKER_05: We are looking for a big season and talk about the literal best time to have a good season, the Big 12 in all of its history.
- 49:14SPEAKER_05: Because we're we're looking dead in the eyes the last season in the Big 12.
- 49:18SPEAKER_05: How about we send UT home with an L to remember us by?
- 49:21SPEAKER_03: Please, that would be fantastic.
- 49:24SPEAKER_03: Um, this is 08.
- 49:26SPEAKER_03: It'll be up there with the O8 game.
- 49:27SPEAKER_03: Oh, yeah, absolutely.
- 49:28SPEAKER_03: This this is just like it's getting me so hyped for football season.
- 49:32SPEAKER_03: And this is this is probably the most players we've had on a preseason watch list, and we still haven't named them all.
- 49:37SPEAKER_03: I'm gonna I'm gonna go through that here in a bit, but uh just getting this excited, and my heart's not ready for it.
- 49:45SPEAKER_05: I really do think the season will be different.
- 49:48SPEAKER_05: I know we say that all the dang time, but it's year three, we're finally settled in.
- 49:52SPEAKER_05: We got amazing transfers, we got some studs that have been training in the program for years now.
- 49:57SPEAKER_05: It's time.
- 49:57SPEAKER_05: We got vets, it's time to make it happen.
- 50:00SPEAKER_05: And I think the potential to break through the Big 12 is there because there's a lot of question marks on a lot of teams.
- 50:06SPEAKER_05: So if we're gonna make it happen, I think we look more dependable than everybody else, but nobody knows it.
- 50:12SPEAKER_03: Yeah, absolutely.
- 50:13SPEAKER_03: I agree.
- 50:13SPEAKER_03: And one of those veterans is Sir Roderick Thompson, who was named to the Dolk Walker watch list, best running back in the nation, of course.
- 50:22SPEAKER_03: And then we have our boy, Charlie Brewer's nightmare, Colin Schooler, named to the Bednarik, Bednarik, I don't know how to pronounce it, but it's the best linebacker of the year award watch list, and then finally capping it off Dawson Deaton named to the Rymington Award watch list, which is the most outstanding center in college football.
- 50:45SPEAKER_03: So uh I this is insane.
- 50:48SPEAKER_05: Charlie Brewer is like, wait, tech can't come to the pack right now.
- 50:53SPEAKER_05: Wait, wait, I didn't want that.
- 50:55SPEAKER_05: I didn't want I I went to Utah.
- 50:57SPEAKER_03: I mean you talk away from Colin Schooler.
- 51:01SPEAKER_05: He he wakes up in the middle of the night shaking, but um, that's what I when was the last time we had that many guys named for these preseason lists.
- 51:09SPEAKER_03: I wish I knew those are so it's a ton of research they have to go through just to find like the like pre-season watch lists.
- 51:15SPEAKER_03: But this is uh this is an insane five dudes named a preseason award watch list.
- 51:20SPEAKER_05: I mean, just stupid, and not to mention we have a quarterback who's a favorite in the NFL draft, yeah.
- 51:26SPEAKER_05: So they even though he's he may not be in a trophy list, but the guy's getting top level attention, so yeah, this could be special.
- 51:35SPEAKER_05: And what I've what I've been seeing lately is we got some size too, like we got some big boys at a lot of positions, so it's just a different team than we're used to at Texas Tech right now.
- 51:46SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that's something that we definitely haven't seen in at least since we've been since we started going to Texas Tech at 24 in 2014.
- 51:54SPEAKER_03: We didn't have big guys at these positions.
- 51:57SPEAKER_03: I mean, we were looking at Jakeem Grant, we were looking at DeAndre Washington, and I love those guys, but they're small, and I mean they're the outliers in the amount of small guys that we've had in this program that have not succeeded.
- 52:09SPEAKER_03: So um it's just it's it's cool seeing all this, and we are stacked at a lot of different positions.
- 52:17SPEAKER_03: We are gonna go into a full pull football preview as we get closer to the start of the season.
- 52:22SPEAKER_03: But as of right now, getting all these guys on award watch list, awesome stuff for sure.
- 52:28SPEAKER_05: I like hearing these award lists because you know Kirby Hokutt has put Matt Wells on prove it season right now.
- 52:34SPEAKER_05: Like because Kirby Hokutt also wants to prove it, you know, he's he's there.
- 52:39SPEAKER_05: We're all we're now all suddenly auditioning for bids.
- 52:42SPEAKER_05: We all just all of a sudden want to look very impressive.
- 52:45SPEAKER_05: So I think Texas Tech needs to really put it together if we want to really just punch through.
- 52:50SPEAKER_05: I'm not saying it makes or breaks our chances, but it doesn't hurt.
- 52:54SPEAKER_03: So there's there's no drug quite like recency bias.
- 52:58SPEAKER_03: So and winning and win, yeah.
- 53:01SPEAKER_03: Let's win, let's get it going.
- 53:04SPEAKER_03: Uh, and uh I'm just so I'm so excited for this.
- 53:08SPEAKER_03: You know who I'm also excited for is Kevin O'Banner, the newest player for Texas Tech basketball.
- 53:16SPEAKER_05: Hog fans in shambles.
- 53:19SPEAKER_03: We thought they had him so hard.
- 53:22SPEAKER_03: We were at war with Arkansas last week about this man.
- 53:26SPEAKER_03: This man sparked a revolutionary war against Arkansas and Texas Tech on Twitter, and it was just a nightmare to deal with the hog fans.
- 53:37SPEAKER_03: Uh, they I think they're up there for one of the worst fan bases.
- 53:40SPEAKER_05: Oh, absolutely.
- 53:41SPEAKER_05: The Southwest rivalry was reborn, you know.
- 53:44SPEAKER_05: It was just back to the old days immediately.
- 53:48SPEAKER_03: So I mean we I mean, we talk about AM and we talk about UT as being like fan bases that talk a lot of crap after not really accomplishing much, especially in the last 10 years.
- 53:59SPEAKER_03: Arkansas is that is that times 10.
- 54:03SPEAKER_05: So yes, no, you nailed it on the head.
- 54:07SPEAKER_05: We're always giving AM crap for like not having the wins to back up their Alabama level talk, but you give Arkansas an inch and they're taking five miles.
- 54:18SPEAKER_05: They really are, they think they're God's gift in college basketball right now.
- 54:24SPEAKER_03: They they've made one Elite Eight, and they think they are freaking national championship contenders from today to forever.
- 54:33SPEAKER_03: So I they they were hilarious to deal with, but let's talk about Kevin O'Banner, who is now a Texas Tech Red writer and not a Razorback.
- 54:41SPEAKER_03: Um came home.
- 54:42SPEAKER_03: First off, automatic starter.
- 54:45SPEAKER_03: This dude is going, and we said it on last week's pod when we talked about potentially him coming to tech.
- 54:50SPEAKER_03: He is an automatic starter on this team.
- 54:53SPEAKER_03: He is one of the most desired players that was in the transfer portal all offseason.
- 54:58SPEAKER_03: I mean, this this level of pickup is insane for Mark Adams in his first year.
- 55:05SPEAKER_05: I remember you and I were talking about this on the pod.
- 55:07SPEAKER_05: I was asking you, how do you feel if we get these these transfers?
- 55:11SPEAKER_05: And you kept saying better and better and better.
- 55:13SPEAKER_05: Eventually we're just like competitor.
- 55:14SPEAKER_05: Like we're a the a threat for the top level.
- 55:17SPEAKER_05: How do you feel about it right now?
- 55:18SPEAKER_05: Where where are you at, Steven?
- 55:20SPEAKER_03: We're an absolute threat.
- 55:21SPEAKER_03: We aren't, I mean, listen, I understand the national media perspective is not going to be very high on us after losing Chris Beard and having a first-time power five level head coach.
- 55:32SPEAKER_03: I understand that John Rosteen has us at 28th in his big board and Jeff Goodman, you know, 26th or whatever he had it, but I get that.
- 55:41SPEAKER_03: What I'm seeing, and what I'm understanding for how this team has come together is we there's not a lot of bad going into this year's team with TJ Shannon back, with Bryson Williams coming in, with Kevin O'Banner coming in, with Kevin McCullough taking that next step, and having a roster that is so extremely deep at a lot of different positions.
- 56:03SPEAKER_03: I think we are absolutely going to be a competitor in the Big 12 and maybe all of college basketball.
- 56:09SPEAKER_05: What really stands out to me about this team that's just so different is the size and athleticism.
- 56:15SPEAKER_05: Like these are all very athletic guys, and they all have length.
- 56:19SPEAKER_05: Like we're talking about all pretty dang tall dudes.
- 56:22SPEAKER_05: There's not a whole lot of you know, six-footers.
- 56:24SPEAKER_05: We're talking, you know, six' five range, it's very forward size.
- 56:28SPEAKER_05: We're our biggest question marks the guard, what's usually one of the more you know, easier guy to pick out, which is so surprising to me right now.
- 56:37SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that is the biggest question mark right now is what we're gonna do kind of as the main ball handler on this team.
- 56:43SPEAKER_03: I know John Rosteen tweeted it out.
- 56:45SPEAKER_03: Uh a couple other guys have seen that Kevin McCullough wants to take more of a ball handling facilitator role on this team.
- 56:51SPEAKER_03: But back to Kevin O'Banner, what he adds that we have not had in this past couple seasons is a knockdown shooter.
- 56:59SPEAKER_03: I mean, we've had those guys, Davide Moretti, everything, you know, those uh Kyler Edwards at times.
- 57:05SPEAKER_03: Uh we've had those guys that can knock down the three ball.
- 57:08SPEAKER_03: We haven't had a guy that's 6'8 that can knock down the three ball as well as Kevin O'Banner does 46 from three.
- 57:16SPEAKER_03: This dude is a sniper from downtown.
- 57:19SPEAKER_03: And what that does as a big guy is it spreads out the floor, it leads room for him to be a threat and for the defenses to actually look at him more and pay closer attention, which leads to other stuff like Terrence Shannon has more driving lane, Kevin McCullough has more room in the paint to finish, Marcus Santosilva can finish on the offensive end.
- 57:39SPEAKER_03: So this is such a big pickup and something that's unique in college basketball to have a guy that is that knockdown of a shooter from downtown.
- 57:48SPEAKER_05: So you're saying we have a unique defense and a unique offense now with these players?
- 57:52SPEAKER_05: Is that what you're saying?
- 57:53SPEAKER_03: Absolutely.
- 57:54SPEAKER_03: The a more spread out offense is what we're gonna have.
- 57:57SPEAKER_03: And and as long as we're not running some weird motion bullshit that Chris ran last year, uh I think we're gonna be really good offensively.
- 58:07SPEAKER_05: So uh is the Pac-12 listening to this podcast right now?
- 58:10SPEAKER_05: Basketball is still around, baby.
- 58:13SPEAKER_03: Come on, pac-12.
- 58:14SPEAKER_03: UCLA, Bill Walden.
- 58:15SPEAKER_03: Come on, what are you doing?
- 58:16SPEAKER_03: Look, look at Texas Tech.
- 58:18SPEAKER_05: What so what do you think about our like Big 12 chances right now?
- 58:21SPEAKER_05: We have to be in the discussion for the title now, right?
- 58:24SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I think Kansas and UT have that right now.
- 58:27SPEAKER_03: They they are definitely the top two teams to look at.
- 58:31SPEAKER_03: We are definitely, if we're not on their level, we're we're an inch below them.
- 58:35SPEAKER_03: And I think we're gonna see as the season progresses and as it gets going, how the lineups that we use, how Mark Adams does as a head coach, uh, we're gonna see how we do handle the rest of the team.
- 58:46SPEAKER_03: UT has a lot of question marks, believe it or not.
- 58:48SPEAKER_03: I know they got some of the best transfers available.
- 58:50SPEAKER_03: I think they got like five of the top 30, whatever transfers available, which is big time, but we haven't seen a Chris Beard team without Mark Adams.
- 58:58SPEAKER_03: So there are question marks on this UT team, and I think people are too a little too high on them.
- 59:03SPEAKER_05: I mean, you're talking about how UT is getting these transfers, but look at how Coach Adams has outcompeted all these other schools for these incredibly desired players in the transfer portal.
- 59:14SPEAKER_05: He is killed it, dude.
- 59:16SPEAKER_05: Like, I'm so impressed with his work in the portal.
- 59:18SPEAKER_05: It's it's it is inspiring.
- 59:21SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I was I was going back and listening to our our pods after Beard left, and we were so disappointed.
- 59:26SPEAKER_03: Um, but from that point after Chris Beard left, how low we were to be where we are at now is so impressive.
- 59:35SPEAKER_03: And what Mark Adams has done just in half an offseason is insane.
- 59:41SPEAKER_05: Absolutely.
- 59:42SPEAKER_05: Went from man, we got some rebuilding to do to okay, it looks like we're reloading, and now it looks like we're right back in it, like not even missing a step.
- 59:50SPEAKER_05: You said we're we're an inch off of the real Big 12 discussion.
- 59:54SPEAKER_05: What would you like to see to added to the team that really makes you think, okay, this is right back into us being really special again?
- 1:00:01SPEAKER_03: I don't think it's a matter of what we add to the roster.
- 1:00:04SPEAKER_03: I think our roster's set.
- 1:00:06SPEAKER_03: I just want to see it.
- 1:00:07SPEAKER_03: We can speculate all we want on how we're gonna do, but with this group of guys, it just depends on the coaching and how they're used in the system at this point because I think our roster can compete with anybody in the nation right now.
- 1:00:22SPEAKER_03: It's just um, and and I it's not like I don't believe in Mark Adams, I just need to see it first.
- 1:00:27SPEAKER_05: Hey, that leaves some sneak attack factor.
- 1:00:29SPEAKER_05: No one no one knows what they're getting as Mark Adams as a head coach, not a single person.
- 1:00:33SPEAKER_03: Absolutely.
- 1:00:34SPEAKER_03: They they know the defense, and and no one's been able to fix that, so it's still a problem.
- 1:00:41SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's still it's still a problem, and it's one of the most innovative defenses in all of college basketball in the last few years.
- 1:00:48SPEAKER_03: Uh, so I'm excited for Mark Adams.
- 1:00:50SPEAKER_03: I think he's gonna do awesome.
- 1:00:52SPEAKER_03: I just need to see it before I can say that he's that we're gonna be at UT or Kansas' level.
- 1:00:57SPEAKER_05: For sure.
- 1:00:58SPEAKER_05: And again, it kind of goes back to what we were talking about with football.
- 1:01:00SPEAKER_05: This could be the last Big 12 season we're having, and the Big 12 is a phenomenal basketball league.
- 1:01:05SPEAKER_05: I'm really gonna miss that part.
- 1:01:07SPEAKER_05: Um, but it's time to start sending some of these, especially OU and UT, out the door.
- 1:01:12SPEAKER_05: It's time to really show them, you know, okay, bye, we're gonna be just fine.
- 1:01:16SPEAKER_05: You know what I mean?
- 1:01:17SPEAKER_03: We have a few reasons to beat UT this year.
- 1:01:20SPEAKER_05: So oh, yes, sir.
- 1:01:22SPEAKER_05: Yeah, how was I even?
- 1:01:23SPEAKER_05: It's because he's so out of sight, out of mind, Steven.
- 1:01:26SPEAKER_03: I know, I know.
- 1:01:27SPEAKER_05: I'm a Martin Adams guy, don't give a single crap about country club Chris.
- 1:01:31SPEAKER_03: All right, oh man, I love how much he's hated that nickname, apparently.
- 1:01:35SPEAKER_03: Uh oh, really?
- 1:01:37SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I've I've heard stuff from uh you know people that are much more in depth with with you know the the Texas Tech community and the and the Big 12 community uh have told us that uh he absolutely hates that nickname.
- 1:01:53SPEAKER_05: Well, that just means we're gonna use it non-stop, man.
- 1:01:57SPEAKER_03: I love it.
- 1:01:58SPEAKER_03: No doubt.
- 1:01:58SPEAKER_03: Uh, we were talking about this the other day.
- 1:02:00SPEAKER_03: We saw that picture of Chris Beard in like a in like a bar or something, watching like an outdoor concert or something like that.
- 1:02:06SPEAKER_03: Uh, what we if we were in the same setting as him, in the same place, would we actually say something to him?
- 1:02:15SPEAKER_05: 200% yes, we yeah, especially at least two beers deep.
- 1:02:21SPEAKER_05: 100% we're saying something snarky.
- 1:02:24SPEAKER_03: Oh, yeah, no doubt.
- 1:02:25SPEAKER_03: No doubt.
- 1:02:26SPEAKER_03: I'm not trying to like get arrested or start a fight or something like that, but I would absolutely, if I saw him and we locked eyes, I would call him a word that I can't say on this podcast.
- 1:02:37SPEAKER_05: Absolutely, yeah, yeah.
- 1:02:39SPEAKER_05: Even if I get uh tossed out of the bar, it's worth it.
- 1:02:42SPEAKER_05: Totally worth it because you're a legend from there on, especially with that group they were with.
- 1:02:47SPEAKER_03: Oh, yeah.
- 1:02:48SPEAKER_03: Oh god, no, yeah, you're in if you do that.
- 1:02:51SPEAKER_03: But uh, we'll see if that ends up coming to fruition.
- 1:02:54SPEAKER_03: I don't think it will, but you are closer to Austin than I am, so I don't know.
- 1:02:59SPEAKER_05: That's that's true, but I I don't know if Georgetown's his forte.
- 1:03:02SPEAKER_05: I don't think he wants to come hang out with uh Penelope and Margaret.
- 1:03:06SPEAKER_03: No, I'm just saying you're more likely to go in the Austin area than I am.
- 1:03:10SPEAKER_03: That is that's true.
- 1:03:12SPEAKER_03: So if anybody's gonna be here talking crap to Chris Beard's face, it's gonna be Tristan and probably not me.
- 1:03:16SPEAKER_03: So just have a few sodas in.
- 1:03:20SPEAKER_03: Had one or two root beers.
- 1:03:24SPEAKER_03: But all right, this is Talking Tech Pod's 50th episode.
- 1:03:27SPEAKER_03: We have to talk about Talking Tech Pod.
- 1:03:30SPEAKER_03: We have to talk about how we have done as a podcast, and uh, we haven't, you know, we're idiots.
- 1:03:39SPEAKER_03: Y'all know that.
- 1:03:40SPEAKER_03: For if you've listened to us for a long time, of course you know that.
- 1:03:43SPEAKER_03: We have terrible takes.
- 1:03:45SPEAKER_03: Uh some of our takes have been so off base.
- 1:03:49SPEAKER_03: Uh, listening, I was going like I said earlier, I was going through past pods to see how we did and what we talked about, and some of our takes have been absolutely awful.
- 1:04:00SPEAKER_03: Both you and me.
- 1:04:02SPEAKER_03: When you sent me the summary, I was like, Dear God, I wanted to run through some of our worst takes that we've had on this podcast since we've started it.
- 1:04:13SPEAKER_03: So uh, I I don't know if you want to start with me, you want to start with you.
- 1:04:16SPEAKER_03: What do you want to do here?
- 1:04:17SPEAKER_04: Uh I don't want to be the last one.
- 1:04:19SPEAKER_04: We're doing you last, so get me first.
- 1:04:21SPEAKER_03: Okay, all right.
- 1:04:22SPEAKER_03: Let's start with some of your worst takes that you've had on Talk and Tech Pod.
- 1:04:26SPEAKER_03: So back, and and this isn't you, this isn't exclusively you.
- 1:04:30SPEAKER_03: Everybody thought we were gonna kill Houston Baptist at the start of the football season, but my man, you were adamant.
- 1:04:37SPEAKER_03: You were saying there was zero percent chance that we were not gonna kill Houston Baptist, Tristan.
- 1:04:45SPEAKER_05: This is the most unnecessary hot take that ever existed.
- 1:04:50SPEAKER_05: Like, there's no reason why this should be a hot take.
- 1:04:54SPEAKER_05: We cream every FCS team.
- 1:04:56SPEAKER_05: I don't know why Bailey Zap came out and ruined my life.
- 1:05:00SPEAKER_05: Yes, all of our lives, you know.
- 1:05:02SPEAKER_05: It was unbelievable, man.
- 1:05:04SPEAKER_05: I I this this is this is my hottest take, but it by no means should be.
- 1:05:10SPEAKER_03: The most depressed we've been maybe post like like after Chris Beard left.
- 1:05:16SPEAKER_03: This was the most depressed we were after a game.
- 1:05:20SPEAKER_03: We were so down in the dumps.
- 1:05:22SPEAKER_05: We were like, this season's gonna suck.
- 1:05:27SPEAKER_05: But uh so what's worse, that or being absolutely blown out by TCU our freshman year?
- 1:05:36SPEAKER_03: The uh TCU is worse because we lost.
- 1:05:42SPEAKER_03: We lost this one.
- 1:05:44SPEAKER_03: We can at least like joke around and like say so one and oh, right where we want to be.
- 1:05:49SPEAKER_03: Matt what no, the the anytime we're losing by a stupid amount of points to a team that we should be competitive with, uh, yeah, no, that This was bad, but that wasn't that bad.
- 1:06:02SPEAKER_05: I did so much research for that too.
- 1:06:04SPEAKER_05: I'm like, I'm just gonna show how not worried everybody should be.
- 1:06:07SPEAKER_05: And then I was I was sweating bullets the entire game.
- 1:06:10SPEAKER_05: And the whole time I was just like, this is gonna happen, isn't it?
- 1:06:13SPEAKER_05: Is this gonna happen, right?
- 1:06:14SPEAKER_05: This is this is and then I then I went out back and just started drinking some whiskey and staring in the night sky.
- 1:06:20SPEAKER_05: I'm like, this is this is this my life?
- 1:06:23SPEAKER_05: Is this is this what I'm up for?
- 1:06:24SPEAKER_03: This is my life.
- 1:06:26SPEAKER_03: This is what we're in for, and that's what we were in for.
- 1:06:28SPEAKER_03: We did get granted, we did get a little better after a little bit.
- 1:06:32SPEAKER_05: During the biggest redemption with UT.
- 1:06:37SPEAKER_03: For real.
- 1:06:37SPEAKER_03: I no, we can't have nice things.
- 1:06:39SPEAKER_03: We're in Texas Tech.
- 1:06:41SPEAKER_03: What were you gonna say?
- 1:06:43SPEAKER_03: I was gonna say during that Houston Baptist game, we didn't have Colin Schooler, we didn't have DeMarcus Fields, we didn't have a lot of our good players.
- 1:06:52SPEAKER_03: Not an excuse for almost losing to a terrible FCS program, but I will say we and we're coming off a COVID year where we didn't have any spring practice, nobody had anything like that.
- 1:07:05SPEAKER_03: So I was going through that and and realizing that we weren't in a great situation.
- 1:07:10SPEAKER_03: And if it was gonna be any year that we were gonna potentially almost lose to an FCS team, it would be this year.
- 1:07:16SPEAKER_03: But yeah, that was still a bad take.
- 1:07:19SPEAKER_05: It was, yeah, and you know what?
- 1:07:21SPEAKER_05: You lined that up perfectly.
- 1:07:22SPEAKER_05: And don't forget, whatever like teams like Houston Baptist are gonna come play Texas Tech, you have a whole bunch of players that are pissed off that they weren't recruited by Texas Tech.
- 1:07:29SPEAKER_05: That's suddenly their Super Bowl, they're gonna give it all their heart and soul to win.
- 1:07:33SPEAKER_05: Um, so you gotta keep that in mind.
- 1:07:34SPEAKER_05: I'm sure a lot of our guys were sleeping.
- 1:07:36SPEAKER_05: Not an excuse at all, but holy cow, were we scared and really were like it was really gonna happen.
- 1:07:41SPEAKER_03: Yeah, we were.
- 1:07:42SPEAKER_03: So let's move on to your next really bad take.
- 1:07:46SPEAKER_03: Uh, and we'll get to mine.
- 1:07:48SPEAKER_03: Don't worry, everybody.
- 1:07:49SPEAKER_03: I'm not just crabbing on Tristan this whole time, but I'd love to do that.
- 1:07:52SPEAKER_03: Uh, but that'll be another podcast.
- 1:07:54SPEAKER_03: But this this next take from you um was pretty bad.
- 1:08:00SPEAKER_03: And now, in the grand scheme of things, when we know how things turned out, uh, you said Kyler Edwards will take on that Keenan Evans role in 2021.
- 1:08:09SPEAKER_03: We were doing our basketball preview, and you were saying that Kyler Edwards was gonna be the next Keenan Evans.
- 1:08:16SPEAKER_05: This is what you get for trusting the snake.
- 1:08:18SPEAKER_05: This is what you get for trusting country club Chris.
- 1:08:21SPEAKER_05: He was talking him up like he was gonna be.
- 1:08:23SPEAKER_05: He was talking about like we got a new veteran leader.
- 1:08:26SPEAKER_05: He's gonna he said he was gonna fill that role.
- 1:08:28SPEAKER_05: I believed him.
- 1:08:29SPEAKER_05: I was like, it's gonna be he's gonna be a veteran now, he's got experience under his belt.
- 1:08:33SPEAKER_05: But well, it it just didn't really end up that way, especially now.
- 1:08:37SPEAKER_03: This guy clearly wasn't really dedicated to Texas Tech.
- 1:08:40SPEAKER_03: No, it wasn't.
- 1:08:41SPEAKER_03: And uh especially after he left through the whole process and and he put out the the Twitter post that said he was a Red Raider for life, and then he deleted it, you know, a day later.
- 1:08:51SPEAKER_03: That's so crappy, dude.
- 1:08:52SPEAKER_03: That was so bad, Kyler.
- 1:08:54SPEAKER_03: That like I really I wish everybody the best of luck, especially through a coaching change.
- 1:08:59SPEAKER_03: I understand, but for you to put something out on social media to say you're all in, and then and then all of a sudden saying, okay, no, I'm uh actually I'm gonna get out of here and go to Houston, that is where this take becomes worse.
- 1:09:16SPEAKER_05: It's when it's when you're uh you know the cute girls like actually giving you some interest, and then she's like, Okay, yeah, maybe we can go on a date.
- 1:09:22SPEAKER_05: And she's like, actually, I want to be just friends.
- 1:09:24SPEAKER_03: Actually, no.
- 1:09:25SPEAKER_03: You take the L.
- 1:09:28SPEAKER_03: So we were we were the per we were the guy in that situation with the pretty girl and Kyler Edwards.
- 1:09:34SPEAKER_03: But I uh honestly, we're gonna be fine.
- 1:09:36SPEAKER_03: That's what doesn't make this take that bad, but also saying comparing Kyler Edwards to Keenan Evans five years from now is gonna be a really bad take.
- 1:09:44SPEAKER_05: Yes, absolutely.
- 1:09:45SPEAKER_05: Keenan Evans is gonna be one of our goats forever now, and but but not like Kyler's gonna be kind of forgotten at this point.
- 1:09:51SPEAKER_03: Yeah, absolutely.
- 1:09:52SPEAKER_03: All right, let's move on.
- 1:09:54SPEAKER_03: I'll bite the bullet.
- 1:09:55SPEAKER_03: These are my bad takes from uh since episode one.
- 1:09:59SPEAKER_03: First off, in the uh football preview for the 2020 season, I stated the 2020 QB room at Texas Tech is filled with depth.
- 1:10:17SPEAKER_03: Wolf.
- 1:10:19SPEAKER_03: Yikes.
- 1:10:20SPEAKER_05: Yikes.
- 1:10:22SPEAKER_05: I think you and I were in agreement with that too.
- 1:10:25SPEAKER_05: We were like, Alan Bowman's the boy, he's the boy, and they were like, but if he's not the boy, we got these other boys.
- 1:10:33SPEAKER_03: We got these other boys, but if he's not the dude, we have Maverick MacGyver who hasn't even played at all and who continues to not play, who may or may not exist.
- 1:10:44SPEAKER_03: I don't think he exists anymore.
- 1:10:46SPEAKER_03: Nobody is talking about Maverick MacGyver.
- 1:10:49SPEAKER_05: He's like the if if a tree falls in the woods.
- 1:10:52SPEAKER_05: If anyone hears it, is did it happen?
- 1:10:53SPEAKER_05: Like is he there?
- 1:10:55SPEAKER_03: Is he along with check on our man's?
- 1:10:59SPEAKER_03: I don't I don't even know if Maverick MacGyver is still on the roster.
- 1:11:03SPEAKER_03: He didn't get a single snap in the spring game this year, and we had two freshmen get get snaps in the oh man, I don't understand.
- 1:11:12SPEAKER_03: I thought Maverick MacGyver was going to be something.
- 1:11:14SPEAKER_03: Matt Wells has clearly not thought that.
- 1:11:18SPEAKER_03: Uh, and then I also thought Henry Columbi, he's a Utah State guy, he's familiar with the system.
- 1:11:24SPEAKER_03: Unfortunately, we didn't realize that David Yo's system is absolute garbage.
- 1:11:29SPEAKER_03: So I it's not that I don't believe in Henry Columbi still, it's just that uh that system we ran last year was horrible, and our quarterbacks did not benefit from it.
- 1:11:39SPEAKER_05: It wasn't Henry Columbi that let us down.
- 1:11:41SPEAKER_05: Alan Bowman was supposed to be our star.
- 1:11:43SPEAKER_05: He was Henry Columbi is the ideal backup, you know.
- 1:11:46SPEAKER_05: You know what you're getting, he's gonna be pretty reliable, but he's not gonna really win you the big games.
- 1:11:50SPEAKER_05: But that a backup's not supposed to, you know.
- 1:11:53SPEAKER_05: So, but whenever you compare that take to our room now, what that's like night and day.
- 1:12:00SPEAKER_03: Like this room really is so much better, for sure.
- 1:12:03SPEAKER_03: Like, I there's even those freshmen that I'm more excited about.
- 1:12:07SPEAKER_03: Yeah, get Barron Morton in there, get Donovan Smith in there.
- 1:12:10SPEAKER_03: I'm way more excited about than I should have been for freaking Maverick MacIver.
- 1:12:15SPEAKER_05: Now we have Alan Bowman in Michigan, who who knows what's gonna happen with him.
- 1:12:19SPEAKER_03: So who knows, man?
- 1:12:20SPEAKER_03: You know, we make these takes, but my next one is Jamarius Burton.
- 1:12:25SPEAKER_03: And I I truly thought Jamarius Burton was gonna be one of our best players this coming season.
- 1:12:32SPEAKER_03: I said it in the basketball preview.
- 1:12:34SPEAKER_03: I said that he was our most underrated transfer, that he was tremendous, and I will I I'll you know, I'll say it right here.
- 1:12:41SPEAKER_03: I watched a few highlights on him and I got excited, and that's what happened.
- 1:12:45SPEAKER_03: Well, well, we both have two bad basketball takes now, don't we?
- 1:12:50SPEAKER_03: Yeah, we do.
- 1:12:51SPEAKER_03: My worst take, though, and you can attest to this because you thought all season this guy was solid, and I just didn't.
- 1:12:59SPEAKER_03: I I think that's right.
- 1:13:01SPEAKER_03: We'll talk about it.
- 1:13:02SPEAKER_03: Uh, I my worst take was Zach McPherson, and that was at least for the first six weeks of football season.
- 1:13:09SPEAKER_03: Um, I thought Zach McPherson uh was terrible, and he wasn't.
- 1:13:16SPEAKER_03: I I I think to to put something in into perspective for everybody, um, I've always hated at least one defensive back on Texas Tech's roster, and I felt like I needed somebody else to spend all my time and energy hating, and I chose Zach McPherson early in the season because he had a bad Houston Baptist game, and I just tried to stick with that, and it just clearly did not work because the man was a third-round pick in the NFL.
- 1:13:45SPEAKER_05: I I think you were just in default.
- 1:13:47SPEAKER_05: I hate Texas Tech DBs, just like straight up, you do not care what the performance on the field was yet.
- 1:13:54SPEAKER_05: Because I remember going through each podcast, I'm like, is he good or not, Steven?
- 1:13:57SPEAKER_05: Because you're always like, What a game from Zach McPherson.
- 1:13:59SPEAKER_05: He did it like five times.
- 1:14:00SPEAKER_05: Like, is he good or not?
- 1:14:01SPEAKER_01: You're like, Well, I'm you know that was a stud.
- 1:14:07SPEAKER_03: I I know he was awesome, and I really too love Zach McPherson right now, but in the moment I did not, and it was a stupid take from me because I wanted I I didn't want him to be bad, but I wanted somebody to get mad at.
- 1:14:25SPEAKER_03: So I chose Zach, and I'm sorry, Zach McPherson, you were fantastic.
- 1:14:30SPEAKER_03: Um, and and that's it, that's what I have to say.
- 1:14:34SPEAKER_05: Please slay in the NFL to make Steven look even way stupider.
- 1:14:38SPEAKER_03: I'm here for it.
- 1:14:39SPEAKER_03: I love Zach now.
- 1:14:41SPEAKER_03: Please do good.
- 1:14:42SPEAKER_03: Please.
- 1:14:43SPEAKER_03: I I want you to be awesome in the NFL, but yeah, that was my worst take.
- 1:14:48SPEAKER_03: Well, is that it for us?
- 1:14:49SPEAKER_05: Are you about to give me one big bomb or something?
- 1:14:51SPEAKER_03: No, that's it.
- 1:14:52SPEAKER_03: That's it.
- 1:14:53SPEAKER_03: We've had we've had a lot of stupid takes.
- 1:14:55SPEAKER_03: Um, not not as bad.
- 1:14:57SPEAKER_03: Those were our worst.
- 1:14:59SPEAKER_04: I think Houston Baptist really makes me sad now.
- 1:15:03SPEAKER_03: Yeah, Houston Baptist, everything makes me sad about this because a lot of this was football, and then also Jamarius Burton and Kyler Edwards leaving, those are just kind of disappointing.
- 1:15:12SPEAKER_03: Football was very disappointing.
- 1:15:14SPEAKER_03: So uh those were our worst takes.
- 1:15:16SPEAKER_03: I hope y'all enjoyed that.
- 1:15:18SPEAKER_03: But we again we're not smart, and you don't you actually you listen to us, you constantly you know come back, and we do appreciate that.
- 1:15:26SPEAKER_03: But there's a lot of stuff you don't hear that we have on the recordings that we cut out of the podcast, uh, just to make sure that y'all keep at least a few brain cells.
- 1:15:37SPEAKER_03: But luckily for everybody here, I kept a few certain bloopers or outtakes from Talk and Tech Pod over the last 50 episodes that I'm kind of mashing up together and giving for y'all to listen to see what we kind of are behind the scenes and what happens when we mess up on a certain episode.
- 1:15:59SPEAKER_04: Dear God.
- 1:16:00SPEAKER_03: It's gonna be bad.
- 1:16:01SPEAKER_03: It's gonna be really funny, really bad.
- 1:16:03SPEAKER_03: I hope y'all enjoy it.
- 1:16:05SPEAKER_03: This is the talk and tech blooper reel of the first 50 episodes.
- 1:16:11SPEAKER_03: Quick warning for everybody.
- 1:16:13SPEAKER_03: We do use some explicit language here.

- 1:16:25SPEAKER_03: Yeah, we're uh we're trash.
- 1:16:29SPEAKER_05: Refill.
- 1:16:31SPEAKER_05: Well, if you're if you're saying that this is a very defensive-oriented team in the Hornfrogs, I would put our defensive team against the best in the country.
- 1:16:39SPEAKER_05: So I I I feel good about that matchup then.
- 1:16:42SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:16:43SPEAKER_03: Well, they're an offensive-oriented team.
- 1:16:46SPEAKER_03: You said they were a defense.
- 1:16:47SPEAKER_03: No, no, no, no.
- 1:16:48SPEAKER_03: They're very often, I mean, they're running gun, they try to score a ton of points, they don't play a lot of defense.
- 1:16:52SPEAKER_03: What the hell did I hear then?
- 1:16:53SPEAKER_03: Did you say you don't know?
- 1:16:55SPEAKER_03: I might have, I don't know.
- 1:16:56SPEAKER_03: I don't know.
- 1:16:57SPEAKER_03: I might have said that.
- 1:16:59SPEAKER_03: I might have screwed you over at that point.
- 1:17:01SPEAKER_03: That's my response then.
- 1:17:02SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 1:17:03SPEAKER_03: Um, then you just you just say something and then I'll know what to say.
- 1:17:13SPEAKER_05: What did you last hear?
- 1:17:17SPEAKER_05: You're saying how we're gonna beat them.

- 1:17:22SPEAKER_05: Um all right, so if they're this offensive big Ludwig guys over here.

- 1:17:41SPEAKER_03: He is the Swedish fish.
- 1:17:46SPEAKER_03: Underrated candy?
- 1:17:49SPEAKER_03: Or overrated.
- 1:17:51SPEAKER_03: Is it?
- 1:17:52SPEAKER_03: It's not overrated.
- 1:17:53SPEAKER_03: No one's like, give me a bag of Swedish fish.

- 1:18:03SPEAKER_05: I'm really feeling some Swedish fish.

- 1:18:29SPEAKER_03: I know that's what I was implying.
- 1:18:31SPEAKER_03: Oh, is that that?

- 1:23:42SPEAKER_03: Who knows?
- 1:23:43SPEAKER_03: It's tech football, it's it's a tailgate.
- 1:23:46SPEAKER_03: We're gonna be drinking.

- 1:23:59SPEAKER_05: I'm ready to be doing many cheers with lots of beers.
- 1:24:02SPEAKER_03: Absolutely.
- 1:24:03SPEAKER_03: Cheers with beers.
- 1:24:04SPEAKER_03: That's uh that's what I'm excited to do, and I'm just excited for football season.
- 1:24:08SPEAKER_03: Uh, everybody is so um, but uh let's go into beach song of the week before we go into final uh, you know, like a final shout out.
- 1:24:17SPEAKER_03: Thank you to everybody.
- 1:24:18SPEAKER_03: Uh, we'll go into straight our our new songs of this week, and we're doing a little beachy vibe because you, sir, just got back from the beach.
- 1:24:27SPEAKER_03: Something very important happened for you in in your life this past weekend.
- 1:24:32SPEAKER_03: Uh, I wanted to give a personal shout-out because I'm so happy for you, and I'm happy for your new fiance, Annie.
- 1:24:39SPEAKER_03: I have known both of you throughout y'all's entire relationship.
- 1:24:42SPEAKER_03: Y'all are now engaged.
- 1:24:44SPEAKER_03: This is uh tremendous stuff.
- 1:24:46SPEAKER_03: I'm I'm really happy for both of you.
- 1:24:48SPEAKER_05: Thank you so much, man, from the bottom of my heart.
- 1:24:50SPEAKER_05: And what what more can I say than Texas Tech Women?
- 1:24:52SPEAKER_05: You know, they they they got a way to get under your skin, don't they?
- 1:24:56SPEAKER_05: So two of the best Red Raiders out there.
- 1:24:59SPEAKER_05: I appreciate that so much, man.
- 1:25:00SPEAKER_05: And I and maybe y'all can kind of hear where my mind was at with my my suggestion last week with Forever and Ever, amen.
- 1:25:07SPEAKER_05: So there you go, there you go.
- 1:25:10SPEAKER_05: But thank you so much for the shout-out, and that's why I was thinking maybe we do beach this week since I was getting a Sunbird in deaths in Florida.
- 1:25:17SPEAKER_03: Yeah, right on, man.
- 1:25:18SPEAKER_05: So, all right, give me your beach song of the week.
- 1:25:21SPEAKER_05: All right, so my beach song of the week is obviously you're gonna say Jimmy Buffett.
- 1:25:25SPEAKER_05: So I got a Jimmy Puppet song for you, but it's not just a party song, it's not one of his just sing-along ones, it's it's one of his deeper songs where Jimmy Buffett actually digs a little deeper.
- 1:25:35SPEAKER_05: It's a pirate looks 40, and that's actually my favorite Jimmy Buffett song of all time.
- 1:25:40SPEAKER_05: I think it's a beautifully written song, it's kind of a depressing song because it's this it's this guy in his life that kind of looks back at, you know, I've just kind of been a vagabond, you know, I'm not really attached to anything.
- 1:25:50SPEAKER_05: Do I like that or not?
- 1:25:51SPEAKER_05: And the ocean's always been my home, so at least I have that.
- 1:25:54SPEAKER_05: So it's it's it's definitely about an aging man, and I think every grown man is gonna kind of reach that point where he listens to that song and just it kind of hits different.
- 1:26:02SPEAKER_05: So, but I I do love the song as it is, and I'm gonna go with the Fire Looks 40, Jimmy Buffin.
- 1:26:07unknown: Yes, I am a pirate.
- 1:26:11SPEAKER_01: 200 years too late.
- 1:26:14SPEAKER_01: The cannons don't thunder, there's nothing to plunder about a victim of fate.
- 1:26:22SPEAKER_03: Right on, man.
- 1:26:23SPEAKER_03: For my song of the week, I am going to open yet another beer.
- 1:26:27SPEAKER_03: As you that have been listening to the podcast, uh know that I have been, you know, consuming a beer or two during this whole time.
- 1:26:35SPEAKER_03: So, this one, because it is beachy, because you are drinking consuming sodas and beverages on the beach.
- 1:26:45SPEAKER_03: Give you a little pop.
- 1:26:47SPEAKER_03: Well, that was a little ramble and raider move there, eh?
- 1:26:49SPEAKER_03: A little rambling raider move out there.
- 1:26:51SPEAKER_03: Uh, but yeah, my beach song of the week is Where the Boat Leaves From by Zach Brown Band.
- 1:26:56SPEAKER_03: Uh, such a banger.
- 1:26:58SPEAKER_03: Uh, I was going through some of Zach Brown Band's songs.
- 1:27:02SPEAKER_03: There's so many that I love.
- 1:27:03SPEAKER_03: Their old stuff is fantastic.
- 1:27:06SPEAKER_03: I mean, it truly some of their older albums is are fantastic.
- 1:27:10SPEAKER_03: And uh, Where the Boat Leaves From is something that goes a little under the radar because you know, Toes is on that album, a lot of other big mainstream songs that have been on the radio.
- 1:27:20SPEAKER_03: This one is the ultimate beach song because you know, yeah, and you know, you can listen to it on the river, the lake, the beach, whatever.
- 1:27:28SPEAKER_03: It works, and it's great island music.
- 1:27:31SPEAKER_03: Zach Brown has a fantastic voice.
- 1:27:33SPEAKER_03: That is my song of the week, Where the Boat Leaves From by Zach Brown man.
- 1:27:37SPEAKER_01: There's a place where the boat is from, it takes away a lower big problem.
- 1:27:47SPEAKER_05: You've always loved that one.
- 1:27:49SPEAKER_05: That's always been like your favorite Zach Brown song.
- 1:27:50SPEAKER_05: You play that.
- 1:27:51SPEAKER_05: Because it's underrated.
- 1:27:52SPEAKER_03: It is so underrated.
- 1:27:54SPEAKER_05: And and I I hear I am sitting like, How have we not done a Zach Brown song yet?
- 1:28:00SPEAKER_05: That was like that was that was peak 2000s country.
- 1:28:03SPEAKER_05: That was for real.
- 1:28:06SPEAKER_03: They were up on the peak of the mountain.
- 1:28:08SPEAKER_03: I did, I did do one.
- 1:28:09SPEAKER_03: I did Highway 20 ride a while ago.
- 1:28:11SPEAKER_03: But okay.
- 1:28:12SPEAKER_03: But this is repeating because I had to do it.
- 1:28:15SPEAKER_03: This is one of my ultimate on-the-water beachy kind of songs.
- 1:28:19SPEAKER_03: So that that I had to do it.
- 1:28:21SPEAKER_03: Not a bad choice, my man.
- 1:28:22SPEAKER_03: No doubt.
- 1:28:23SPEAKER_03: So I had one shout out before we get to the big thank yous to everybody for listening.
- 1:28:28SPEAKER_03: Uh, shouts out to the Milwaukee Bucks and Giannis Antetacumpo, Darvin Ham, Texas Tech Great, and Mike Budenholzer.
- 1:28:39SPEAKER_03: I'm a huge Spurs fan.
- 1:28:40SPEAKER_03: I'm a huge Texas Tech fan.
- 1:28:42SPEAKER_03: So all of these guys uh were they really grinded out, and it was awesome to see them win the ring.
- 1:28:47SPEAKER_03: Uh Mike Budenholzer, famous Spurs coach for many years, assistant under pop, Darvin Ham, all-time great Texas Tech Red Raider, and just Giannis, man.
- 1:28:56SPEAKER_03: You can't not like Giannis.
- 1:28:58SPEAKER_03: Dude was absolutely elite that whole finals put up a 50-piece in the game, in the game ender, the game six.
- 1:29:06SPEAKER_03: I I was I was so excited to see them win, and I was reinformed the whole time, to be honest.
- 1:29:12SPEAKER_05: Absolutely.
- 1:29:12SPEAKER_05: Congrats to the city of Milwaukee.
- 1:29:14SPEAKER_05: I know it's been a really long time since y'all gotten one, and I love I love seeing these smaller markets get some love, get some pieces.
- 1:29:20SPEAKER_05: So good for them, man, and good for a young star.
- 1:29:23SPEAKER_03: Absolutely.
- 1:29:24SPEAKER_03: So, all right, everybody here.

- 1:29:32SPEAKER_03: No, we're the producers.
- 1:29:33SPEAKER_03: We don't we don't have people, we don't have people on this podcast, but we do appreciate literally every single one of y'all for how this has gone.
- 1:29:42SPEAKER_03: I mean, we started this as kind of a you know just a little side project.
- 1:29:46SPEAKER_03: We we love Texas Tech, so we thought, hey, you know, maybe start a podcast, whatever, and see how it goes, see how it rolls.
- 1:29:52SPEAKER_03: If it ends after five episodes, it ends.
