- 0:00Welcome back to Fostering Faith. My name is Tracie
- 0:03I'll be your host today. And we're gonna be talking
- 0:05about a topic that I love, habits. And so we're
- 0:10gonna call this episode, Holy Habits. Faith,
- 0:13rhythms that last. And so welcome back. If you've
- 0:17not joined us, welcome back family. And if you're
- 0:19new to the family, welcome. My name is Tracie
- 0:21Foster. And in here in Fostering Faith, we are
- 0:24gonna learn how to live everyday lives that are
- 0:27rooted in Jesus, even if those days are just
- 0:29a little messy, a little chaotic, or even just
- 0:32plain loud. I am. talking about something that's
- 0:36going to get real close to home. And so in our
- 0:39youth, we just started a Bible plan called Habits.
- 0:42And so we're going to be talking about habits
- 0:44and so not New Year's resolutions, not I'll try
- 0:47harder next month moments. I'm talking about
- 0:49wholly anchored, steady rhythms that keep your
- 0:53heart soft, your faith strong and your mind clear,
- 0:56even when life is anything but. And this episode
- 0:59is called Holy habits faith rhythms that last
- 1:03and yes, we're gonna laugh we're gonna keep it
- 1:06real and we're gonna talk about What it's like
- 1:08to stop living for spiritual adrenaline and start
- 1:12living with consistent connections in Jesus.
- 1:16And so as we walk in through this, it's about
- 1:18habits, it's about consistency, consistency.
- 1:21That word has just really been resonating in
- 1:24our life. And so me and my husband go for a walk
- 1:28every morning and I am a 4 .4 kind of walker
- 1:32with a 20 pound vest on. He is a 3 .5. Walker
- 1:38and I was in band. I was a marching band. I played
- 1:41baritone I can march with the best of them and
- 1:44I keep pace I run I can keep pace I can walk
- 1:47I can keep pace and I wear a Garmin shout out
- 1:50Garmin and I have my phone on my vest and it
- 1:54will yell out pace it'll route it'll yell out
- 1:57the pace for us and so he says he needs me to
- 2:00be a 3 .9 wife I need you to be a 3 .9 wife I
- 2:04can't keep up with you if you walk like your
- 2:06normal walk. I want you, let's meet halfway.
- 2:10Just be a 3 .9, just be a 3 .9. And so I am consistently
- 2:14walking at 3 .9. How do I know this? Garmin tells
- 2:17me average speed 3 .9, average speed 3 .9. Well,
- 2:21he is waxing and waning. He has to run to catch
- 2:23up and then he'll slow back down. Run to catch
- 2:25up, slow back down. And he is exhausted. by the
- 2:29end of this, you know, two mile walk in the morning
- 2:31because he's having to run and catch up, run
- 2:34and catch up. And so I'm just like, it's a beautiful
- 2:36morning walk for me. I keep pace. I'm in rhythm.
- 2:39I keep saying he's like, no, you're speeding
- 2:41up. And Garmin will say average speed, three
- 2:44point nine. And so like I am constantly in the
- 2:48same speed. I am consistent. And it is just about
- 2:52the consistency and about that consistent connection
- 2:55with Christ that makes our life. It's so much
- 2:59easier. And so, wait, let's call it out. We live
- 3:02in a life and a world that loves chaos. We love
- 3:05glorifying busy. We scroll 90 miles an hour.
- 3:09We wait until we're running on empty and then
- 3:11God help me. But here's the thing. Faith isn't
- 3:16built in emergencies. It's built in the quiet,
- 3:19the daily, the moments no one sees. And if you're
- 3:23going to go into high school, or honestly, just
- 3:25trying to be an adult without losing your mind,
- 3:29you need rhythms that anchor you, not just hype
- 3:32you up. And so let's talk about a word I think
- 3:37that is underrated. And so, blessed is the one
- 3:41who does not walk in step with the wicked, but
- 3:45those that delight in the law of the Lord and
- 3:48who meditates on his law day and night. That
- 3:50person is like a tree planted by streams of the
- 3:54water. And that's Psalm one, one through three.
- 3:58And so planted, that's the word right there.
- 4:01Not tossed, not trending, planted. When you're
- 4:07rooted in God's word daily, you start to grow
- 4:10quietly, steadily, and fruitfully. Even when
- 4:15the storms hit, even whenever you feel nothing,
- 4:19consistency, builds fruit. And so let's break
- 4:23it down. Holy habits are intentional rhythms
- 4:27that draw you closer to God. Not because you're
- 4:30trying to earn something, not because you're
- 4:33trying to be perfect, but because you know that
- 4:36your soul needs space to breathe and be filled.
- 4:40And let me give you some examples that work for
- 4:43real life. And I mentioned these because I had
- 4:47an older saint and she gave me an acronym, KISS.
- 4:52Keep it simple, Saint. Because we often call
- 4:57ourselves sinners and those that have been washed
- 5:01in and accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior
- 5:04and we have been baptized in the Holy Spirit
- 5:06into our water, we are called saints. We are
- 5:09no longer sinners. And so let's reference that
- 5:12into Romans. And so please call yourself what
- 5:16you are. You are a saint who chooses to sin,
- 5:21if you want to be real honest, where others that
- 5:23are not followers of Christ, that have not had
- 5:27that the Holy Spirit, they are slaves to sin.
- 5:31We are no longer slaves to sin. And so it is
- 5:35just keep it simple, saint. So remember that
- 5:38kiss. So five minutes in the word before you
- 5:42touch your phone. Five minutes. We are doing
- 5:45a habit on the YouVersion Bible app with our
- 5:48high school students and I literally read it
- 5:51while my water is warming up for my coffee in
- 5:54the morning. That's how long it takes. Two, talk
- 5:58to God while brushing your teeth. I tell the
- 6:03kids, say thank you God for waking me up before
- 6:05your feet even hit the floor in the morning.
- 6:08Journaling, one sentence a day. One sentence.
- 6:12Worship music while you drive instead of a full
- 6:15-volume drama podcast. One meal a week where
- 6:20phones are down and Jesus is mentioned. These
- 6:24are all simple five minutes. You're already gonna
- 6:28be brushing your teeth. Pray while you're brushing
- 6:30your teeth. I remember when I started journaling
- 6:34and it was literally like one word here, one
- 6:36word there, a couple sentences here and there.
- 6:39And I mean, now like that I'm in it, like I am
- 6:42writing page after page. And I mean, it's just
- 6:45a wonderful time. But I mean, there are some
- 6:49days where I have time for it. Thank you for
- 6:51everything. Today is going to be a great day.
- 6:54Thank you for everything that you've done for
- 6:55me. And that's all I write. And then there's
- 6:58days where like I could just say, help me. Because
- 7:02he knows me because I spend time with him And
- 7:06because I talk to him a lot And worship music
- 7:08while you drive you're gonna be listening to
- 7:11something anyway, so fill your bucket before
- 7:13you get out of the car and so there's seasons
- 7:16in your life and You may have never hit them
- 7:19yet But I've been in some pretty dark seasons
- 7:22in these seasons where I was doing all the quote
- 7:25-unquote Christian things church serving praying
- 7:28and with other people, but in my private rhythm
- 7:32was bone dry. I mean, there was no... I'd let
- 7:37the good things crowd out the God things. And
- 7:41I can remember one day I sat down to pray and
- 7:43I just felt nothing. I was numb. Not because
- 7:47God wasn't there, but because I hadn't been with
- 7:51Him in the quiet. So I started small. Five minutes.
- 7:57That's it. And I left. awkward at first, like,
- 8:02hi God, I'm back, again. Sorry I left. But he
- 8:09met me, like he always does. And those five minute
- 8:15habits, they grew. And now it's part of my day,
- 8:18like brushing my teeth or drinking my coffee,
- 8:21actually with coffee, because caffeine and Jesus,
- 8:25is it yes and amen? It is an amen. Jesus and
- 8:28coffee and my Bible in the morning is an everyday
- 8:31thing. It is wonderful. It's wonderful. But let's
- 8:34make it practical. So if you're in high school,
- 8:36if you're a student, if you're a tired mom or
- 8:38just a human trying to grow spiritually, I think
- 8:42these three holy habits can help you. And so
- 8:47a rooted morning and scripture Mark one thirty
- 8:50five says Jesus got up early to pray. Start your
- 8:54day anchored and not anxious. And listen, I'm
- 8:57not talking about an hour in Leviticus at 5 a
- 9:01.m. I mean five minutes to read a psalm. Say
- 9:05a real prayer. God help me love people that I
- 9:08don't like today. Breathe in the truth after
- 9:12scrolling chaos. But start small. Just win the
- 9:17first five minutes. Two. Sacred pauses. 1st Thessalonians
- 9:27517 says, pray without ceasing. And so let prayer
- 9:31interrupt your day. Waiting in line, talk to
- 9:35God. Walking to class, ask him to lead you. About
- 9:41to clap back at somebody, whisper, Holy Spirit,
- 9:45take the wheel. These moments add up. They make
- 9:49you in rhythm with his spirit. And three. Rest,
- 9:57that's refuels. Scripture says, Genesis 2, 3
- 10:00says, God rested on the seventh day. This is
- 10:04a huge one. Rest is worship. Turn off the noise,
- 10:09take a Sabbath, say no to one thing this week,
- 10:13and yes to stillness. You're not weak for resting,
- 10:17you're wise. What if you think that you messed
- 10:22up? Okay, so take a deep breath. Because here's
- 10:27what happens. We start strong and then we skip
- 10:30a day. Then there's three and then we feel like
- 10:34we failed and we ghost got until January. Don't
- 10:39do that. Jesus isn't measuring your strikes or
- 10:43your streak record. He's winning a relationship.
- 10:47So if you missed a week, come back. If you feel
- 10:51numb, still show up. If you're burnt out, start
- 10:57slower. This isn't about doing more. It's about
- 11:02being with Him. And so this challenge for you
- 11:06guys, and so if you're listening and you're thinking,
- 11:09okay, I'm in, so here's a challenge, 21 days.
- 11:13That's it. Pick one of these rhythms, morning
- 11:18time with God, journaling once a day. a worship
- 11:24playlist instead of a toxic one. Ten minutes
- 11:27of quiet. Are we reading one verse of a Bible
- 11:33a day and do it for 21 days and see what happens.
- 11:39You don't have to post it. You don't have to
- 11:41be perfect in it, but you have to start. And
- 11:46so this is what shapes you. So we want to end
- 11:50this with. Your faith isn't about hype moments.
- 11:55It's about it's built in hidden rhythms. And
- 11:57when you pray and no one knows, when you open
- 11:59your Bible in the middle of a busy day or whenever
- 12:02you whisper, God, I'm here. Even if you don't
- 12:05feel anything, those habits, they form you. They
- 12:09foster your faith. And you're not just preparing
- 12:13for high school. You're preparing for life. And
- 12:16if you build your house on rhythms and roots
- 12:19in Jesus, You'll stand strong when everything
- 12:22else shakes. And so we would love to pray for
- 12:26you this week. And so dear Heavenly Father, thank
- 12:29you so much for these listeners. Thank you so
- 12:30much for what you have done for us. Thank you
- 12:33that they are going to build habits on you. Thank
- 12:34you that they're going to take these next 21
- 12:36days to go through those habits and just to get
- 12:39rooted in you and that we keep it simple because
- 12:41we don't have to be overwhelmed. We just have
- 12:43to be in your presence. Thank you that you've
- 12:45not given up on us. Thank you that you've given
- 12:47us another chance for today. Thank you for all
- 12:49that you do. In Jesus name I pray. Amen. So if
