Transcript
- 0:02Tad Eggleston: Good evening, everybody. Welcome back to 22 Panels and the Heavy Metal Book Club, and
- 0:10Tad Eggleston: This is, what, the H.P. Lovecraft issue from Halloween of 1979?
- 0:16Matt: was.
- 0:18Tad Eggleston: I'm gonna… I'm gonna kind of make everybody else be…
- 0:21Tad Eggleston: be… be co-host and move the episode along, because I am…
- 0:26Tad Eggleston: down for the count. I have… I have a throbbing head, and, like, if we require me to, like, host host this evening, then nothing will happen. So…
- 0:39Tad Eggleston: Who wants to volunteer to help?
- 0:42Tad Eggleston: Introduce this, this issue.
- 0:45Matt: Okay.
- 0:47Peter Eggleston Connor: Sure, why not? We're, we're looking at heavy metal, October 1979. This is the special H.P. Lovecraft issue, which is kind of strange for our old school heavy metal, because I don't remember before now, ever having an issue specially dedicated to anything.
- 1:06Peter Eggleston Connor: All the new metal heavy metals have it, but not the old one.
- 1:10Dillon Gilbertson: It's almost like, yeah, when I was reading it, I was like, did I accidentally pick the next Metal or Lont?
- 1:16Dillon Gilbertson: Because, like, it's all dead… it's all around one thing, and that's what…
- 1:19Matt: Sure, yeah.
- 1:19Dillon Gilbertson: Metal Ralon's?
- 1:20Matt: fun issue, this one…
- 1:21Peter Eggleston Connor: This problem.
- 1:22Matt: Probably is the first one where they dedicated it to a genre.
- 1:27Peter Eggleston Connor: Oh, definitely.
- 1:28Peter Eggleston Connor: Yep, we got a nice, interesting cover art. It looks like somebody took a photo and put it on a photo album, and
- 1:36Peter Eggleston Connor: That photo just happens to be some crazy H.P. Lovecraft-looking thing, though not the most Lovecraft-looking thing I've ever seen.
- 1:45Matt: Exactly. But it was a fun issue. It was, you know, H.P. Lovecraft is a…
- 1:50Matt: Brilliant writer, and this was actually a lot of fun to read.
- 1:55Peter Eggleston Connor: I… I believe that's true. It's been a little bit since I read it, so .
- 1:59Matt: I went through it again today. I was like, oh yeah!
- 2:04Peter Eggleston Connor: So this is gonna be a refresh of perspective for, for me.
- 2:10Peter Eggleston Connor: a Norman Spinrad something-something.
- 2:14Matt: A world between.
- 2:16Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah, I don't remember anything about this, but it's kind of a cool image.
- 2:19Matt: I think this is just a… And…
- 2:22Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah, I think it does too.
- 2:27Peter Eggleston Connor: And, free game, don't know if we can get that, but, you know, it's called Starforce, Alpha Centauri, and, next page.
- 2:34Matt: I have the issue, should I clip the coupon and try and get it?
- 2:37Peter Eggleston Connor: If you want… However, you could also preserve your instant but not cook the coupon, I mean…
- 2:46Tad Eggleston: You were getting heavy metal when you were 3?
- 2:50Tad Eggleston: Who were your parents?
- 2:52Matt: About 12 years ago.
- 2:53Matt: I took an interest in heavy metal, because I remembered it from the 90s, and I'm like, you know what? This is, like, a treasure trove of awesome shit, so I'm going to start buying back issues. And, you know, I obtained the first year and the second year, and then I started being like, alright, I'm gonna pick issues that are probably
- 3:13Matt: should be more sought after than others, and this issue was one of those issues that I picked up.
- 3:18Peter Eggleston Connor: Nice.
- 3:19Matt: because of H.P. Lovecraft.
- 3:21Peter Eggleston Connor: Well, of course.
- 3:27Peter Eggleston Connor: Got a contents here, got some Chateau, some Bresia, some Mobius, some Terrence and Dahl.
- 3:36Peter Eggleston Connor: Voss, Dank, Clark, Nicolette, Sean Kelly, Matthew…
- 3:45Matt: Shalon and Cornelian.
- 3:48Matt: Julie…
- 3:50Peter Eggleston Connor: Yep.
- 3:51Matt: Clever looks.
- 3:54Peter Eggleston Connor: Margarine?
- 3:55Peter Eggleston Connor: David Hurd with William Bytes and Walter Simmonson.
- 4:01Peter Eggleston Connor: Arthur Sudan, Vepi and Cepi? Oh, wow, that's… That rolls off the tongue.
- 4:09Peter Eggleston Connor: Jk Potter.
- 4:11Matt: That's Harry Potter's brother?
- 4:13Peter Eggleston Connor: That's what I was wondering about, and .
- 4:17Tad Eggleston: Simonson is who my cat's named after.
- 4:21Dillon Gilbertson: Hmm.
- 4:22Matt: Nice.
- 4:22Tad Eggleston: Or one of them.
- 4:23Peter Eggleston Connor: Oh, nice.
- 4:25Tad Eggleston: Walter Oden Meatball.
- 4:27Peter Eggleston Connor: Walter Odinito. Sappy.
- 4:30Matt: Alright, we got some rolling papers, cool. Pick a peck.
- 4:33Matt: Yep.
- 4:35Peter Eggleston Connor: 31, we go into… how this is a… the… the Lovecraft issue?
- 4:47Matt: It's only $33 a year in 1979 to get this Delivered to your door.
- 4:54Peter Eggleston Connor: Like, once a month, right?
- 4:56Matt: Yup, it was monthly.
- 4:58Peter Eggleston Connor: Studio 3… an issue.
- 5:02Matt: Man!
- 5:03Matt: I need a time machine.
- 5:05Peter Eggleston Connor: Right?
- 5:07Dillon Gilbertson: That's the one thing we should use the time machine for, is to get a cheaper subscription to heavy metal.
- 5:13Peter Eggleston Connor: Just that.
- 5:14Dillon Gilbertson: Aside from these…
- 5:15Matt: And other comics.
- 5:17Dillon Gilbertson: Aside from these… these copies that we… don't pay for.
- 5:23Dillon Gilbertson: And can read for free.
- 5:25Matt: Stop on truffles!
- 5:30Matt: Okay, well, it's cool.
- 5:32Matt: Ugh.
- 5:34Matt: Final Justice!
- 5:37Dillon Gilbertson: This one was fun. It was…
- 5:39Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah, I remember this one, yeah.
- 5:40Dillon Gilbertson: It wasn't… so, like, H.P. Lovecraft, I feel like…
- 5:45Dillon Gilbertson: Most people think of his stories, like, they're all… they're all very… not… not to put him down, but they're all very long-winded, like, they're all very eloquently spoken, and they're all very, there's a lot of $10 words, and…
- 6:01Dillon Gilbertson: You know what I'm saying?
- 6:03Peter Eggleston Connor: This was just like, he was bare.
- 6:04Dillon Gilbertson: It was very…
- 6:05Peter Eggleston Connor: A lot of describing the nothingness.
- 6:08Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah, it's all, it's all…
- 6:09Matt: Very monster Cthulhu-driven.
- 6:11Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah, it's Eldritch Forward.
- 6:14Peter Eggleston Connor: So undescribable.
- 6:15Dillon Gilbertson: This was decidedly not eldritch in almost any way.
- 6:20Peter Eggleston Connor: Which was, like, yeah, a nice departure.
- 6:23Peter Eggleston Connor: Rather interesting. Ancient story, and
- 6:29Peter Eggleston Connor: Then there's that nice twist into what the actual story was.
- 6:34Matt: But I feel like… so the only plot hole I found in this story was, these two people are the only people that have ever seen this play out.
- 6:43Matt: So they know that it's different?
- 6:47Dillon Gilbertson: Well, at the very, the very end, the last panel, they're driving away, and it says, show canceled.
- 6:52Matt: Yup.
- 6:53Dillon Gilbertson: And so I was… I don't know if I was reading too much into it, but I was like, is this the only time this has happened at the show? And that one person… and that one person actually gets murdered and thrown out the window?
- 7:03Matt: Right.
- 7:03Dillon Gilbertson: And now the show's over because everybody's dead?
- 7:06Matt: Or, because these people don't know the truth?
- 7:09Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah. I mean, they put on the show specifically for them, so that they would write a book about the truth.
- 7:14Matt: Yeah.
- 7:15Peter Eggleston Connor: I thought it was just some, like, haunted place where, like, you know, it was actually canceled ever since they, like, drove up, like, because we don't… we never see the sign when they originally go in, right? That's true. So, like, they go in, and then there's a show, and it's like…
- 7:32Peter Eggleston Connor: But the show was canceled today because of, like, the heavy rain or whatever,
- 7:38Peter Eggleston Connor: And, like, it's like, so what they really were seeing wasn't… wasn't the show that was being put on, it was, like.
- 7:47Dillon Gilbertson: Well, do we not see the… we don't see the sign earlier? I thought we did.
- 7:50Peter Eggleston Connor: So, I mean, maybe I forgot.
- 7:54Peter Eggleston Connor: But I don't… I remember seeing the sign at the end and being like, oh, okay, and then, like.
- 7:59Tad Eggleston: Yeah, isn't it on page 1?
- 8:01Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah, right, or page 2… yeah, right there. I mean, that's a red sign, not a yellow sign, but I'm not gonna ding them.
- 8:07Matt: TV performances!
- 8:11Peter Eggleston Connor: The same spot, though?
- 8:13Dillon Gilbertson: But even if it is the same spot and the same sign, like, this is clearly before the rain. Right. So then the rain starts, the show gets canceled, they go anyway, and they put on a special performance for them.
- 8:25Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah, because I don't think it's… I don't think it's the people who normally put on the spectacle, I think it's…
- 8:31Dillon Gilbertson: It's depressing.
- 8:31Peter Eggleston Connor: I think it's, like, ghosts.
- 8:33Dillon Gilbertson: Sickos.
- 8:34Matt: I don't know, I… how? I don't… that's the part I don't get, but I still thought it was a cool story.
- 8:41Peter Eggleston Connor: Well, I don't know if it's actually a ghosts, but, like, it's kind of like one of those things where, like, it's like…
- 8:47Peter Eggleston Connor: It didn't actually… Whatever happened was, like, some sort of, like, weird extra-dimensional shit or something like that, like.
- 8:56Matt: Could be.
- 8:56Peter Eggleston Connor: Like, it's not described on what exactly happened, but…
- 9:01Peter Eggleston Connor: it, like, didn't… did happen. Does that make sense?
- 9:07Peter Eggleston Connor: I know, it's not weird, but it's like an old… I feel like it's an old TV, like, trope, where it's like, oh, like, what is the name of that show? The Twilight Zone?
- 9:19Matt: Yep.
- 9:20Peter Eggleston Connor: Kinda like that sort of thing, where it's like, oh, like, you know, they went into the spot, and nobody was actually there, but they saw a show where people were there anyways.
- 9:30Matt: Yeah, I just, I just thought, like, alright, maybe.
- 9:34Tad Eggleston: There we go.
- 9:34Matt: It never shows, but they put this sign up because these people were there.
- 9:40Matt: And they wanted them to see their… this performance, and that's it.
- 9:45Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah, I guess I could see that.
- 9:46Tad Eggleston: I'm like, why?
- 9:48Peter Eggleston Connor: Bother putting up, like, the show canceled and not just take down the sign entirely?
- 9:52Matt: Yeah, exactly.
- 9:53Matt: Yeah, but that's…
- 9:54Dillon Gilbertson: Probably a Permanent sign, they probably… that's probably a…
- 9:58Dillon Gilbertson: You know, they can't just take that sign down.
- 10:01Peter Eggleston Connor: Also, that's a lot to put up and, like, I don't know, a day?
- 10:06Peter Eggleston Connor: Did they know they were coming?
- 10:07Matt: Yeah, because they're…
- 10:08Peter Eggleston Connor: Magic guy.
- 10:12Tad Eggleston: See… And it's been a while, but I thought it was…
- 10:18Tad Eggleston: they'd somehow, like, gone, you know, Matt and his time machine went back in time, and, like, the show…
- 10:26Tad Eggleston: did this… this… fictitious version, and what they wound up seeing was the real thing.
- 10:37Peter Eggleston Connor: That makes sense, too. Like, there was some sort of weird time jump.
- 10:46Tad Eggleston: And they got to see that the…
- 10:48Tad Eggleston: The… the legend and the reality were… were different.
- 10:58Peter Eggleston Connor: There you go.
- 11:01Peter Eggleston Connor: Now they can go right about it, or something else.
- 11:07Tad Eggleston: Except that would probably be bad luck.
- 11:11Tad Eggleston: And haunt them.
- 11:13Tad Eggleston: I don't know why, I'm just making assumptions.
- 11:17Peter Eggleston Connor: And then we have the Dunwich Horror.
- 11:19Matt: Did anyone like the Dunwich horror?
- 11:22Peter Eggleston Connor: I need to remember the Dunwich Horror.
- 11:26Matt: I'll be honest, if they didn't split it up.
- 11:28Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah.
- 11:29Matt: I would have enjoyed it more.
- 11:34Peter Eggleston Connor: Ugh…
- 11:38Peter Eggleston Connor: Obviously, I need to go re… My mother.
- 11:41Matt: This is the one about the lady that had the baby.
- 11:44Matt: Oh, you're right, right.
- 11:45Peter Eggleston Connor: Right.
- 11:46Matt: And I could walk by 11 months, and talk by 11 months, or whatever, and everyone hated it.
- 11:57Dillon Gilbertson: used before.
- 11:58Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah, didn't we? Yeah, we read a Dunwich horror story.
- 12:04Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah, I remember that. No, I don't know, I thought it was pretty interesting. I mean, it was kind of strange, but…
- 12:11Matt: strange, but I…
- 12:14Matt: I dug it, because… because the monster's footprints… Yeah. You look at those, you're like, what the hell makes a footprint shaped like that?
- 12:25Matt: When they give you the reveal, it's like, oh, and they're like, alright, that's cool.
- 12:28Dillon Gilbertson: Alright, alright. You got me.
- 12:30Matt: He's like, "…
- 12:36Peter Eggleston Connor: Yup.
- 12:39Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah, I like the, the depiction of the… the son she had, too, who was a…
- 12:45Matt: The deformed face.
- 12:47Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah.
- 12:48Matt: Yeah.
- 12:50Matt: Alright, so… Yeah, we like this.
- 12:53Matt: There talks about destruction, and then continued on page 74.
- 12:59Matt: And then they drop us into Cthulhu.
- 13:02Dillon Gilbertson: Which is hardly.
- 13:03Matt: my favorite Mobius drawings of all time.
- 13:07Dillon Gilbertson: They're very good Mobius drawings, I agree. I love the art in this one.
- 13:11Matt: Yes.
- 13:12Matt: This was just…
- 13:13Dillon Gilbertson: I was like…
- 13:14Matt: Just blown away.
- 13:15Dillon Gilbertson: Is it, like, is he on a game reserve? Is this just, like, a bunch of rich dudes go and, like, kill old go- old useless gods?
- 13:23Matt: I think… my impression was, this dude bought the mansion.
- 13:28Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah.
- 13:28Matt: that holds the gateway.
- 13:31Matt: Okay? And he uses it for his rich friends to go on this perverse hunting party.
- 13:38Peter Eggleston Connor: Yup, that sounds about right.
- 13:44Peter Eggleston Connor: Where they go hunt this strange creature.
- 13:50Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah, like, I thought of it as, like, where super rich dudes, like, pay a shitload of money.
- 13:56Matt: Like they do now to shoot…
- 13:57Dillon Gilbertson: To go to a game reserve and ask.
- 13:58Matt: Africa, or whatever.
- 13:59Dillon Gilbertson: like, okay, there's an old lion here who's gonna die soon anyway, so, like, and he's also in a fenced-in area, so, like, go shoot him, I guess, and feel good about yourself.
- 14:09Matt: Yeah.
- 14:11Matt: Yeah, it's kind of like modern-day billionaires,
- 14:16Matt: hiring a… renting a yacht to shoot Somali pirates.
- 14:20Peter Eggleston Connor: Exactly.
- 14:21Matt: That's apparently a thing.
- 14:23Tad Eggleston: Is it?
- 14:24Matt: It is…
- 14:25Tad Eggleston: Oh my god.
- 14:26Matt: Yeah.
- 14:27Peter Eggleston Connor: pretty fucked up.
- 14:28Matt: Yeah.
- 14:40Peter Eggleston Connor: I mean? And this eldritch god was just doing its thing. What the hell?
- 14:51Peter Eggleston Connor: But they do end it with, how long will this crime go unpunished?
- 14:54Matt: Right.
- 14:58Matt: Yeah, I just… I don't know.
- 15:02Matt: This speaks a lot more about society than it should.
- 15:08Matt: Seriously.
- 15:09Dillon Gilbertson: Or maybe just about the right amount, the amount that it's supposed to.
- 15:14Peter Eggleston Connor: Maybe, maybe… It's not more than it should. Maybe it's… maybe it's…
- 15:20Dillon Gilbertson: I think.
- 15:21Matt: My point is, it's so fucking relevant, it shouldn't be this relevant.
- 15:25Dillon Gilbertson: Well, I think… I think rich people have always rich-peopled, it's just that back then it was millionaires, and now it's billionaires.
- 15:32Matt: Right, exactly.
- 15:33Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah.
- 15:34Dillon Gilbertson: It's always… it's an evergreen story. Like, rich people are always gonna rich people.
- 15:38Matt: Yes.
- 15:40Peter Eggleston Connor: Gotta try to do the thing that, like, nobody else can do, so they can be like, I can do this because I have all the money in.
- 15:46Matt: Because I've exploited so many people, I got billions of dollars. Yeah, exactly.
- 15:50Peter Eggleston Connor: violently.
- 15:54Matt: Yeah, I really like this story, this is one of my favorites.
- 16:00Peter Eggleston Connor: It was a good one, yeah.
- 16:03Matt: Zeno meets Dr. Fear and is consumed.
- 16:09Matt: This was a short one, it was good. Did anyone… alright, quick aside. Did anyone notice the amount of hyphenated words in this issue?
- 16:18Peter Eggleston Connor: No.
- 16:19Dillon Gilbertson: In this particular story, or in this…
- 16:21Matt: Oh, and this particular issue, throughout, just like, holy crap.
- 16:26Matt: I don't know why it stuck out to me, but my ADHD brain was, like, struggling every time a word broke, and I was like, oh, I gotta read that again.
- 16:32Dillon Gilbertson: Thank you.
- 16:33Matt: Well, I think…
- 16:33Dillon Gilbertson: I think that's,
- 16:35Dillon Gilbertson: That's sort of an inherent difficulty with adapting H.P. Lovecraft for comics, isn't that? Yeah. Comics are brevity.
- 16:45Matt: Yeah, and this is worried.
- 16:47Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah, like.
- 16:47Matt: Okay.
- 16:47Dillon Gilbertson: Space is a valuable resource in comics, and like… H.P. Lovecraft is notoriously wordy.
- 16:55Matt: And probably letters of the day.
- 16:58Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah.
- 16:58Matt: as… Careful?
- 17:03Matt: With their replacement, maybe?
- 17:05Dillon Gilbertson: And so… and so, like, a lot of… a lot of the bigger words that… the amount of big words that HPL.
- 17:11Matt: That's true.
- 17:11Dillon Gilbertson: uses. It's difficult to find a small word to fit in this part of the box.
- 17:16Matt: You talked about the $10 words, which is 100% spot on.
- 17:20Dillon Gilbertson: Right.
- 17:23Matt: So, yeah.
- 17:27Dillon Gilbertson: Where the Hmm.
- 17:32Dillon Gilbertson: See, what is it? He… he's like, he… the guy… the guy wants to offer… something about certainty. He was like…
- 17:39Dillon Gilbertson: he was like, certain he's not real, or something, and he's like, I want something certain, and he's like, alright.
- 17:45Dillon Gilbertson: I'll give you the one thing that's certain, and then he murders him.
- 17:49Matt: Nothing's certain.
- 17:51Peter Eggleston Connor: Murders him through eating him.
- 17:53Matt: Yep.
- 17:53Peter Eggleston Connor: Murders him, then eats them? I think it's Murder Then Eats.
- 17:59Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah.
- 18:01Matt: Dear… Dr. Fear, your certainty, my pleasure. Enter here. Yep.
- 18:05Dillon Gilbertson: The Agile Tongued Xeno.
- 18:10Dillon Gilbertson: Order descriptor.
- 18:13Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah, agile tongue to Zito.
- 18:16Matt: Yeah, no, this was an interesting…
- 18:18Matt: story. It wasn't… it's short, it's, you know, to the point.
- 18:22Matt: They don't drag it out, I dig that.
- 18:25Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah, I mean, it's kind of like a… it's a short reel. I mean, like, it's not a reel, it's a comic, but, you know…
- 18:32Matt: Yeah.
- 18:33Peter Eggleston Connor: Not something where you have to take a lot of time with it.
- 18:36Matt: It's all expedition, there's no dialogue.
- 18:39Peter Eggleston Connor: Only kind of remembered it.
- 18:41Matt: Yep.
- 18:44Matt: The thing. I enjoyed The Thing.
- 18:46Peter Eggleston Connor: Oh, yeah.
- 18:47Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah.
- 18:48Peter Eggleston Connor: host.
- 18:49Peter Eggleston Connor: entertaining, essentially.
- 18:51Peter Eggleston Connor: Just, it's like, oh, I had this traumatic experience.
- 18:56Matt: Yep.
- 18:57Matt: You can blame me, but I can tell you it wasn't me. Yeah.
- 19:04Peter Eggleston Connor: You remind me and do whatever, but
- 19:08Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah, this was some crazy-ass shit that happened here.
- 19:12Matt: This is the second… best art storage combo back to, compared to Mobius. Mobius is still number one.
- 19:20Matt: But I really enjoyed how this was put together.
- 19:24Tad Eggleston: Really interesting panels.
- 19:26Matt: Yes, we'll lay out the panels.
- 19:29Matt: the concepts, like, I love this.
- 19:32Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah, they feel like that, like, they were… like, this whole page was one piece, and then the panel, the gutters, the panel borders just feel like…
- 19:42Dillon Gilbertson: The brakes in the image, which was cool.
- 19:45Matt: And he's got this awesome phone with enough cord to reach the center of the earth and back.
- 19:51Matt: That reel is nowhere near that big, but it's still funny, and I love it.
- 19:55Peter Eggleston Connor: Yep. No, it's fucking great.
- 19:57Matt: Yeah, it's, like, awesome!
- 20:01Peter Eggleston Connor: Look at those batteries, like, lined up next to each other.
- 20:04Matt: I don't even know how a phone like that would work, but I'm like, that's cool.
- 20:21Matt: And I like how the monster tells this guy, he's like, yeah, Warren's dead.
- 20:26Matt: So, you can go now.
- 20:28Matt: He made a mistake.
- 20:31Peter Eggleston Connor: I like… I like that they also used the, name Carter.
- 20:35Peter Eggleston Connor: Part of the regular news name in, like, Lovecraft things, I think.
- 20:39Matt: Oh, okay.
- 20:42Peter Eggleston Connor: I just thought it was funny.
- 20:45Matt: I just like the way this is drawn. I love the use of this white line to make these pine trees.
- 20:50Matt: shine against the… show up against the dark sky background. Really well done.
- 20:56Peter Eggleston Connor: Duh.
- 20:56Peter Eggleston Connor: Super great art.
- 20:58Matt: Yup.
- 21:00Matt: This was an… alright, The Beasts by Dank. This was another short one?
- 21:04Matt: And I honestly am not sure that I completely understand it.
- 21:11Peter Eggleston Connor: I mean, this feels a little bit like…
- 21:13Peter Eggleston Connor: They found a land of dinosaurs, and then they shot them up.
- 21:17Matt: But I'm… but hey, I'm… Yes, I get that.
- 21:21Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah. Don't you get it, Matt? They shoot the dinosaurs.
- 21:25Matt: Okay, then I guess I get it.
- 21:27Dillon Gilbertson: Jeez.
- 21:29Peter Eggleston Connor: Feels a little bit like the rich people, except… Different.
- 21:37Matt: Yeah, but it's like… I don't… I don't know. It's like, if… if they know the dinosaurs are coming…
- 21:43Dillon Gilbertson: Hold on, go…
- 21:44Matt: there.
- 21:44Dillon Gilbertson: Go, go back one.
- 21:46Dillon Gilbertson: A go-forward one, maybe?
- 21:48Matt: Oh, sorry.
- 21:50Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah, it even says, right, but yes, how long can this go on? Exactly! Which is very much, how long can this go unpunished from the previous one that was just…
- 21:59Matt: Right?
- 21:59Dillon Gilbertson: Puth.
- 22:00Matt: Who's slaughtering who here, man?
- 22:02Dillon Gilbertson: Funny.
- 22:03Matt: This aggression will not stand, man. Yeah.
- 22:07Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah, I mean, like, dinosaurus come every night, and there's more and more of them every night.
- 22:12Matt: And then I'm like, so where do they get their bullets from?
- 22:16Matt: This feels like they're doing it to themselves.
- 22:20Peter Eggleston Connor: I won't bad.
- 22:23Matt: I don't know.
- 22:26Matt: Alright, the man from the black hole.
- 22:30Matt: This one… this was weird.
- 22:33Matt: And there was a lot of very wordy panels.
- 22:38Peter Eggleston Connor: Yep.
- 22:41Matt: And, and it was okay, I mean, it was a good story.
- 22:48Peter Eggleston Connor: It is very weird, though. I mean, like, essentially, like, it just feels like he meets this guy, and this guy corrupts him into doing all sorts of weird fucking shit that…
- 22:56Matt: Yeah, and it's… it's like he knows better, but he does it anyway.
- 23:01Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah, it's like, Renfeld, you know, Dracula's assistant.
- 23:07Peter Eggleston Connor: That's what it feels like.
- 23:09Peter Eggleston Connor: In fact, the guy who is getting him to do the shit even sorta has a vampiric sort of look.
- 23:16Matt: Yes, he does.
- 23:19Peter Eggleston Connor: When he's not looking like a mad scientist like he is in the lower corner.
- 23:22Matt: 20, you know.
- 23:25Matt: Yep.
- 23:31Matt: Like, okay, so I go to this bookstore.
- 23:34Matt: This guy looks at me, makes me feel uneasy, so now, I need to go to his house and hang out.
- 23:41Matt: A little disconnected.
- 23:42Peter Eggleston Connor: He makes me feel uneasy, so I got it.
- 23:46Peter Eggleston Connor: I gotta… I gotta become best friends with him.
- 23:49Matt: Right, and do some freaky occult shit.
- 23:52Matt: Like, no.
- 23:53Peter Eggleston Connor: That is where the story is…
- 23:56Matt: Ploth hole. That's the plot hole for me on this one.
- 23:58Peter Eggleston Connor: I shouldn't have done that, sorry, anyhow.
- 24:00Matt: Would you say I missed it?
- 24:02Peter Eggleston Connor: Oh, I said it doesn't sound kinda gay at all.
- 24:08Matt: Honestly, I didn't even go there.
- 24:09Peter Eggleston Connor: That's what he's into, I'm perfectly happy for him, but…
- 24:14Matt: Yeah.
- 24:15Matt: I did notice this, this word wrap choice around the top of the mansion.
- 24:20Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah.
- 24:21Matt: And I felt like it could have been done better.
- 24:25Peter Eggleston Connor: I believe that.
- 24:26Matt: it was… it was a little hard to read. I had my cursor going like this the whole time to make sure I…
- 24:31Matt: Got the lines lined up.
- 24:33Matt: It's… I love the concept, do not love the execution.
- 24:40Peter Eggleston Connor: I hear him.
- 24:41Tad Eggleston: It is a pretty mansion, though.
- 24:42Matt: Oh, yeah, the drawing's great! I just, you know, again, the technology of the time probably didn't.
- 24:49Matt: We can allow it to be easy.
- 24:51Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah, it's not even, like, a problem that, like, it's using a lot of the really long $10 words either, it's just, like…
- 24:58Matt: It's… it's just…
- 24:59Dillon Gilbertson: It just…
- 24:59Matt: Mine's this long, and when you break it, you're…
- 25:02Dillon Gilbertson: If it could hug the border of the steeple there better, like, it would work better, but, like, there's.
- 25:07Matt: Yes.
- 25:08Dillon Gilbertson: The gaps are inconsistent, like, it's just weird.
- 25:10Matt: Yes, exactly.
- 25:12Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah.
- 25:13Dillon Gilbertson: It's like a really weird example of poor kerning.
- 25:17Matt: This is… this is the example of how NOT to word wrap up an image.
- 25:21Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah.
- 25:22Tad Eggleston: Well, what's really funny is I think they could have fit Knight on the other side.
- 25:26Dillon Gilbertson: Definitely could, yeah.
- 25:28Tad Eggleston: That would have moved.
- 25:30Matt: It would have helped.
- 25:31Tad Eggleston: in a way that might have…
- 25:32Dillon Gilbertson: Might have helped.
- 25:33Matt: Yeah.
- 25:34Tad Eggleston: And it had less hyphens?
- 25:36Matt: Yep.
- 25:37Peter Eggleston Connor: Baby… But they didn't.
- 25:41Matt: Yeah, no, that is one… that is the one thing that stood… one thing that stood out to me in this story, and I was like.
- 25:47Tad Eggleston: So, I mean…
- 25:48Matt: Ugh.
- 25:50Tad Eggleston: This is one of the… one of the major differences just between hand and… .
- 25:57Matt: Computer lettering?
- 25:58Tad Eggleston: computer lettering. When you're doing it by hand, not even, like, because obviously they sketched it in before they made decisions, but you can't…
- 26:10Tad Eggleston: It's hard to manipulate in as many different ways when you're trying to figure out how to do it by hand.
- 26:16Matt: Yeah, as you.
- 26:17Tad Eggleston: You can, when you start.
- 26:18Matt: arrows, Until you're happy with how it looks. I get it, I get it.
- 26:23Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 26:24Matt: And I… but I do appreciate the effort.
- 26:30Matt: Does that make sense?
- 26:31Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 26:32Matt: Okay.
- 26:34Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah.
- 26:34Tad Eggleston: Well, and here's the thing, the… the right side lines up really well.
- 26:42Tad Eggleston: Yes. So…
- 26:43Matt: Yes.
- 26:44Tad Eggleston: I feel like… I feel like that the emphasis was put there, and… Yeah.
- 26:53Peter Eggleston Connor: I mean, I don't think they thought about this, but it does kind of create that whole rift idea.
- 27:00Matt: And I also feel like a solid background on the word balloon, or the word box, doesn't help.
- 27:11Tad Eggleston: Damn.
- 27:13Peter Eggleston Connor: A solid background around the word box doesn't help.
- 27:16Matt: Yeah, the solid white here?
- 27:19Matt: I feel like if that was…
- 27:21Matt: blend it in a little bit, it might… I don't know.
- 27:26Peter Eggleston Connor: I see what you mean, getting at.
- 27:28Matt: Yeah.
- 27:31Matt: But, you know, that's just my…
- 27:32Matt: Graphic design critique, I don't, you know…
- 27:37Matt: It doesn't make the story worse.
- 27:39Matt: Definitely doesn't make it better.
- 27:48Matt: Okay…
- 27:59Matt: Does anyone understand what happened in his dream here?
- 28:02Matt: Is he the one being lowered into the grave?
- 28:05Peter Eggleston Connor: It does look like that.
- 28:06Matt: Yeah.
- 28:10Peter Eggleston Connor: Looks like Black Hole or the other guy is behind the…
- 28:14Matt: Yeah.
- 28:16Peter Eggleston Connor: He's not the one lowering him, but he's in the picture still.
- 28:20Matt: Yeah, I do like the skull with the big… Double eye.
- 28:25Peter Eggleston Connor: Cyclops call.
- 28:31Matt: Alright, anyway.
- 28:35Peter Eggleston Connor: H-P-L.
- 28:41Matt: Who has something to say about HPL?
- 28:45Peter Eggleston Connor: I don't remember what was HPL.
- 28:48Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah, this one… this one's… this one read very HP.
- 28:57Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah, I don't even remember, like, what is… I don't remember the end of this one.
- 29:00Dillon Gilbertson: Like, they go into the demon city… Oh, that's right, they… yeah, yeah.
- 29:04Matt: riddle.
- 29:05Dillon Gilbertson: Whoa.
- 29:05Dillon Gilbertson: And he gives the right answer to the riddle.
- 29:08Dillon Gilbertson: And then he's like, no, dickhead, and then flies away.
- 29:11Matt: Yeah, yeah, exactly.
- 29:13Dillon Gilbertson: No, you idiot.
- 29:14Matt: Yep.
- 29:16Peter Eggleston Connor: No, no, certainly not.
- 29:18Peter Eggleston Connor: These fools, and then flies off.
- 29:20Matt: Yeah.
- 29:21Peter Eggleston Connor: That's H.P. Lovecraft, too, isn't it?
- 29:24Dillon Gilbertson: So, is… is the answer these fools, or is he calling them fools and then flies away? Is he saying these fools to himself?
- 29:32Matt: But the answer is correct. That's why I don't get it.
- 29:38Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah, I don't know.
- 29:40Matt: you know.
- 29:41Matt: A baby crawls on 4… on 4 feet, A man walks, you know.
- 29:49Dillon Gilbertson: The Rule of the Sphinx, like, it's… everybody knows this one.
- 29:51Matt: Yeah, and an old man uses a cane, so he has 3 feet.
- 29:55Peter Eggleston Connor: I mean, it is certainly an answer, but if you're, like, talking about, like, weird H.P. Lovecraft shit, like…
- 30:03Dillon Gilbertson: So, it's actually some weird Elder God?
- 30:06Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah, exactly.
- 30:07Dillon Gilbertson: the answer.
- 30:07Matt: answer to.
- 30:12Peter Eggleston Connor: I think they made some joke about… I don't remember where they made this joke, but…
- 30:18Peter Eggleston Connor: I remember there was a joke about this recently, where it's like.
- 30:21Peter Eggleston Connor: what walks on two legs in the morning, or sorry, four legs in the morning, and two legs in the afternoon, and three legs that eat in the evening? It's like, oh, it must be some new, one of those new Pokemon, I can't remember all their names.
- 30:34Matt: Yeah, that's kind of funny.
- 30:38Matt: Three-legged form, go!
- 30:44Peter Eggleston Connor: Water hop! Duo Hop! Tray hop!
- 30:51Peter Eggleston Connor: And for some odd reason, it goes in that order.
- 31:01Peter Eggleston Connor: They got the third leg wrong, though.
- 31:05Peter Eggleston Connor: Nevermind.
- 31:10Peter Eggleston Connor: This is a fun picture.
- 31:12Matt: Yeah, Loves Kraft.
- 31:15Matt: This was a…
- 31:17Dillon Gilbertson: I like this one a lot.
- 31:18Matt: Illustration.
- 31:19Dillon Gilbertson: This was one of my favorite ones.
- 31:22Dillon Gilbertson: Just because, like, it reminded me of, like.
- 31:26Dillon Gilbertson: Being a kid alone in our dark house, and be like, no, there's fucking monsters by the couch.
- 31:32Matt: Oh, definitely.
- 31:34Peter Eggleston Connor: Oh, for sure.
- 31:43Dillon Gilbertson: I mean, the end sort of lost me a bit, but… The first paragraph was great.
- 31:48Matt: Yeah.
- 31:49Matt: No, it was fun, it's short, it's cute, it's great.
- 31:53Dillon Gilbertson: That's what she got.
- 31:58Matt: Drewsbury's Masterpiece.
- 32:00Tad Eggleston: Gooseberry.
- 32:02Dillon Gilbertson: Dewsbury's. Dewsbury.
- 32:04Matt: Alright.
- 32:06Matt: Yeah, this was… this was an okay read. I didn't have any issues with this, story.
- 32:30Matt: He dies at the end and figures out what his buddy, knew that he didn't.
- 32:38Peter Eggleston Connor: He saw something.
- 32:40Peter Eggleston Connor: That's what you're doing.
- 32:40Matt: Look into the well.
- 32:42Peter Eggleston Connor: He looked into the world.
- 32:44Matt: Yeah.
- 32:46Peter Eggleston Connor: And saw the unspeakable.
- 32:48Matt: And it killed him.
- 32:52Matt: And his death hardly mattered.
- 32:57Peter Eggleston Connor: And is that thoroughly patterned? Yes.
- 32:59Matt: Yeah, I don't know, the art's okay, the story was okay, it was… to the point.
- 33:05Peter Eggleston Connor: I like that blue phase at the beginning.
- 33:10Matt: Sorry.
- 33:10Peter Eggleston Connor: age.
- 33:16Matt: Yes.
- 33:18Peter Eggleston Connor: Such a great faith.
- 33:19Matt: It is.
- 33:21Matt: I wonder why it's blue.
- 33:24Peter Eggleston Connor: I have no idea.
- 33:36Matt: Man.
- 33:37Matt: one.
- 33:38Peter Eggleston Connor: died that night.
- 33:41Peter Eggleston Connor: Because that seems like it's his friend the sculptor, right?
- 33:45Matt: I think so.
- 33:47Peter Eggleston Connor: He went to investigate, and then he found out what he saw.
- 33:52Peter Eggleston Connor: So he followed suit of his friend.
- 33:56Matt: Yes.
- 33:59Peter Eggleston Connor: And saw the unspeakable horror.
- 34:10Matt: Yep.
- 34:12Matt: I, I liked, I liked that there was a lot of short, Well-done stories in this issue.
- 34:21Tad Eggleston: Is that kind of the anti-Lovecraft?
- 34:25Matt: Probably, yes.
- 34:27Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah, a little bit.
- 34:29Dillon Gilbertson: Is that to say that his stories are long and not well done?
- 34:34Peter Eggleston Connor: A little bit.
- 34:39Tad Eggleston: I always felt like he was a better concept writer than writer.
- 34:43Matt: Right, yeah, I agree.
- 34:44Dillon Gilbertson: He's a… he was a… he would have been a great ideas man.
- 34:48Dillon Gilbertson: Except for.
- 34:49Matt: He's like, I've got a writing prompt for you.
- 34:51Dillon Gilbertson: Except for his… oh my god, he would so use AI to write his bullshit.
- 34:57Peter Eggleston Connor: Oh, fuck.
- 34:58Dillon Gilbertson: Thank you, H.
- 34:58Peter Eggleston Connor: You know it.
- 35:00Matt: That's hilarious.
- 35:02Dillon Gilbertson: he wouldn't know how to describe the eldritch Horror, and so he would just ask AI… he'd ask Grok to do it for him.
- 35:09Matt: Oh, God, that's horrible.
- 35:10Tad Eggleston: And Grok would say, imagine if you took Elon Musk, and he had a baby with Elon Musk.
- 35:19Dillon Gilbertson: Whoa.
- 35:19Tad Eggleston: And had a baby.
- 35:20Matt: What do you wind up with?
- 35:21Dillon Gilbertson: That's him. That's him right there.
- 35:23Tad Eggleston: with… with Hitler.
- 35:26Peter Eggleston Connor: Oh. Oh yeah, I had Pittler too. Can't forget that.
- 35:29Tad Eggleston: Okay, what did my cat do?
- 35:32Tad Eggleston: My cat managed to… Hey, just stop!
- 35:37Matt: What did he.
- 35:38Peter Eggleston Connor: I like all the scrolling pages.
- 35:40Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah, were these, were these his actual notes, or were these just some shit that people scribbled around?
- 35:47Matt: No, I believe this is his work.
- 35:48Tad Eggleston: Because… because it's also signed by Drew A at the end?
- 35:52Dillon Gilbertson: Is it?
- 35:53Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah.
- 35:54Matt: I'm wrong. I'm okay with it.
- 35:56Dillon Gilbertson: I missed that part.
- 36:01Dillon Gilbertson: And I could see, I could see some DREA in here.
- 36:04Matt: Yeah, absolutely.
- 36:06Dillon Gilbertson: Oh yeah, it does say Philip Drury in there, right there.
- 36:08Matt: And I couldn't read it, I tried, so…
- 36:10Dillon Gilbertson: Wait, don't try to read that, dude.
- 36:11Peter Eggleston Connor: Oh, I didn't even try.
- 36:12Dillon Gilbertson: You'll go… you'll go mad. You'll go blind if you try to read this.
- 36:15Matt: Or you'll summon something you don't want. Yeah. Coming out of your toilet.
- 36:21Tad Eggleston: My…
- 36:23Dillon Gilbertson: Nope.
- 36:24Tad Eggleston: cat… manage to minimize the zoom window in a way where I can't bring it back.
- 36:33Dillon Gilbertson: I thought you were reading the text for a second.
- 36:38Peter Eggleston Connor: Right there.
- 36:39Matt: That is expected.
- 36:40Dillon Gilbertson: That's what it says, my cat minimized the zoom window.
- 36:44Peter Eggleston Connor: 1979, my cat minimizes zoom window.
- 36:50Matt: That's funny.
- 37:04Matt: You got us back at?
- 37:06Tad Eggleston: Nope.
- 37:07Tad Eggleston: I mean, you guys should just keep going. I just can't see you or anything going on, cause…
- 37:12Tad Eggleston: I might wind up signing out and coming back.
- 37:15Matt: So what's funny is… Your cat.
- 37:18Dillon Gilbertson: story.
- 37:19Matt: Yeah! Okay.
- 37:20Peter Eggleston Connor: that.
- 37:21Matt: minimize yours.
- 37:22Peter Eggleston Connor: Is it into the language of cats?
- 37:25Tad Eggleston: Yep.
- 37:26Tad Eggleston: Yep. I managed to come back, but yeah, Eddie…
- 37:30Matt: It was very timely and appropriate.
- 37:32Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah.
- 37:32Tad Eggleston: I was.
- 37:33Dillon Gilbertson: I didn't understand the story. I did not understand the language of cats.
- 37:36Matt: I didn't.
- 37:37Tad Eggleston: Are you supposed to?
- 37:38Dillon Gilbertson: like, well, Randolph did.
- 37:41Dillon Gilbertson: Randolph Carter clearly understood it.
- 37:43Matt: Yeah.
- 37:46Matt: Again, though, Thank God it was only 2 pages.
- 37:49Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah, another, another…
- 37:50Peter Eggleston Connor: I do really like the art, I mean…
- 37:53Tad Eggleston: this past.
- 37:54Tad Eggleston: Really pretty two pages.
- 37:58Matt: Yeah, it could have been, but cats don't care, so… Yeah, it was okay.
- 38:04Peter Eggleston Connor: But, yeah, no, I can't say that it makes a lot of sense to me.
- 38:14Dillon Gilbertson: How do you like living with a face-hugging hand creature on your face?
- 38:17Matt: Gives good alien.
- 38:18Dillon Gilbertson: Yes, good alien? What?
- 38:24Peter Eggleston Connor: You know… like… Nevermind.
- 38:28Dillon Gilbertson: But on his face?
- 38:30Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah.
- 38:31Matt: It's weird.
- 38:32Peter Eggleston Connor: He gives good, like, he get the… nevermind.
- 38:36Peter Eggleston Connor: You know what's g-doing, Dylan.
- 38:38Dillon Gilbertson: It seems like… well, it seems more like the…
- 38:40Peter Eggleston Connor: Alien.
- 38:40Dillon Gilbertson: It seems more like the facehugger should be saying, Sain gives good heads.
- 38:45Matt: Exactly.
- 38:46Dillon Gilbertson: That's… I don't understand it this way, this way's weird.
- 38:50Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah, but, but the facehugger is actually giving him an alien, right?
- 38:55Matt: I guess?
- 38:57Peter Eggleston Connor: Nevermind.
- 38:59Matt: Did anyone read Gmail?
- 39:01Dillon Gilbertson: No.
- 39:02Peter Eggleston Connor: I probably did, but it's been over a month, so…
- 39:07Peter Eggleston Connor: I cannot remember any of it.
- 39:09Dillon Gilbertson: I say, nay.
- 39:12Matt: Alright, we'll skip that then. Oh, Pat and Vivian. I thought this was actually funny.
- 39:21Peter Eggleston Connor: Oh, I do remember this one. This one was great.
- 39:24Matt: Yeah, what is it, a 3-pager?
- 39:26Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah, this was a good little… good little joke. Good little homie joke.
- 39:30Matt: Yeah.
- 39:32Matt: And she's like, whaa?
- 39:36Matt: It's funny.
- 39:38Dillon Gilbertson: It's funny, it's a good, it's a good joke. Good, wholesome joke.
- 39:41Matt: Yup?
- 39:46Matt: Yeah.
- 39:46Peter Eggleston Connor: away.
- 39:48Matt: And the art is perfect stylistically for this type of story, so…
- 39:52Dillon Gilbertson: Yep, looks like a Saturday morning cartoon, or a… .
- 39:56Matt: A short between cartoons.
- 39:58Dillon Gilbertson: Like, the what's… what's it called?
- 39:59Peter Eggleston Connor: That reminds me of, Mad Magazine a little bit.
- 40:02Dillon Gilbertson: Tonies in the paper.
- 40:04Matt: Yeah.
- 40:05Peter Eggleston Connor: Yep.
- 40:05Matt: Yeah, no notes, I love that one.
- 40:08Dillon Gilbertson: Yep.
- 40:08Peter Eggleston Connor: No, no, that one was great.
- 40:11Dillon Gilbertson: Why is this… why is Cthulhu spelled the way we normally spell it here, but in the Cthulhu story, it's K-T-U-L-U? Is that a thing that I don't understand?
- 40:21Tad Eggleston: Mobile City.
- 40:22Matt: I wondered that.
- 40:23Peter Eggleston Connor: I think they're actually two different creatures.
- 40:25Dillon Gilbertson: Are they?
- 40:26Peter Eggleston Connor: Because, if you remember…
- 40:28Matt: True.
- 40:28Peter Eggleston Connor: Cthulhu, they shoot at Cthulhu, and I'm pretty sure Cthulhu is actually not…
- 40:34Matt: The… the squid thing.
- 40:36Dillon Gilbertson: -
- 40:37Matt: I'm not… I am not a Lovecraft expert by any means, so…
- 40:42Tad Eggleston: But also, how many different ways did Mobius spell Arzak?
- 40:47Matt: Yeah, exactly.
- 40:51Peter Eggleston Connor: But… I think there was a Katuzu. I'm not…
- 40:56Dillon Gilbertson: Cthulhu or Cthulhu? Oh, apparently… Apparently, Cthulhu is just… the phonetic spelling of Cthulhu.
- 41:04Peter Eggleston Connor: Oh, well.
- 41:04Matt: What is the same?
- 41:06Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah.
- 41:06Peter Eggleston Connor: That was the same. I was wrong.
- 41:10Dillon Gilbertson: The name has many alternate spellings, including Cthulhu, Tulu, and Cthulhu.
- 41:18Dillon Gilbertson: So, yeah.
- 41:19Matt: Tuloo, Cthulhu, I wanna do you.
- 41:25Matt: Sorry.
- 41:28Peter Eggleston Connor: No, that's right. Then, like, this is the second part of Dunwich Horror, where they got the investigators chasing it all down.
- 41:36Matt: Yes, and honestly, if it… If they had left this.
- 41:41Matt: just a continuation of the first part. We would have gotten to the awesome reveal here.
- 41:47Matt: And I wouldn't have lost interest.
- 41:49Matt: But since they split it up, I was like, then I had to go back to it, and go.
- 41:53Matt: So…
- 41:55Tad Eggleston: It is really, really nice.
- 41:58Matt: Yes, it is!
- 41:59Tad Eggleston: art, though.
- 42:00Matt: Yes! It's phenomenal!
- 42:04Tad Eggleston: Interesting decision to split it up.
- 42:06Matt: Yeah, this is that, okay, do I want Netflix to release the whole season at a time, or episode weekly?
- 42:14Matt: I want the whole season in Italian! Don't make me wait!
- 42:26Matt: But all in all, it was good. I liked it.
- 42:35Peter Eggleston Connor: Yep, yep.
- 42:39Matt: Another ad.
- 42:40Peter Eggleston Connor: Another ad, yeah.
- 42:43Peter Eggleston Connor: Then we have bad breath.
- 42:45Matt: Oh yeah, bad breath. This was hilarious.
- 42:48Dillon Gilbertson: Bad breath.
- 42:51Peter Eggleston Connor: Can't… can't, can't get any ladies, because it's got bad breath.
- 42:55Matt: Yeah, I just don't understand why he's the one that has to drink the love potion.
- 43:02Matt: I thought you were supposed to give the love potion to the person you wanted to love you.
- 43:06Peter Eggleston Connor: Nope.
- 43:07Peter Eggleston Connor: Clearly, it's a pheromone that attracts people to you.
- 43:12Matt: Okay.
- 43:14Matt: But, it also puts a demon inside of you. I was like, that potion is doing extra work.
- 43:19Peter Eggleston Connor: Yep, that… that potion, like, all the pheromones comes from the demon that gets put inside you.
- 43:25Matt: Yeah, it's… That was intact.
- 43:27Peter Eggleston Connor: I tried to, like, get some, thugs to.
- 43:31Matt: Yeah, beat the demon out of him, and they just rob him, and I was like, that's funny as hell.
- 43:38Peter Eggleston Connor: Then he's eating the demon's ass if the demon is coming out of him.
- 43:43Peter Eggleston Connor: Sorry, bad joke.
- 43:44Matt: No, it was funny, because it's true.
- 43:54Matt: I wonder if the belly dancer, ever came back.
- 44:01Matt: But, like, did he hire her again?
- 44:08Tad Eggleston: I mean, that would be a little awkward.
- 44:12Matt: Awkward!
- 44:13Tad Eggleston: Particularly because she wasn't belly dancing anymore when the demon came out of the smell.
- 44:17Matt: Right.
- 44:21Matt: I think they used the term belly dancer loosely.
- 44:25Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah.
- 44:26Matt: Because they didn't want to,
- 44:30Matt: promote prostitution, maybe? I don't know, I thought that was…
- 44:33Tad Eggleston: I mean, I don't feel… I don't feel like heavy metals had that sort of problem.
- 44:37Matt: I know, that's why I think, that's why I struggle with this.
- 44:40Tad Eggleston: I think that maybe the demon helped him seduce the belly dancer, but that Eamon wanted the.
- 44:48Matt: do his things. Yes, that makes sense.
- 44:53Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah, no, I'm pretty sure that's… that's exactly what was going on, and all.
- 44:57Matt: Yeah, that makes the story make way more sense to me.
- 45:00Peter Eggleston Connor: Thank you.
- 45:00Tad Eggleston: I couldn't seduced the belly dancer on his own.
- 45:03Matt: Clearly.
- 45:09Matt: For sure, yeah, I like it.
- 45:16Dillon Gilbertson: column…
- 45:17Matt: Or the agony column.
- 45:21Dillon Gilbertson: Batman's face.
- 45:25Matt: Yup.
- 45:26Peter Eggleston Connor: I like the light flashing four times in this comic.
- 45:32Peter Eggleston Connor: They do… they do 4 mini panels for each flash.
- 45:38Matt: Oh, yeah.
- 45:41Dillon Gilbertson: Oh, yeah.
- 45:46Matt: Yep.
- 45:47Matt: This is… oh, geez, why should I do that?
- 45:51Matt: Here we go.
- 45:54Matt: Yeah, this is… this was a good… this was a fun one.
- 45:57Peter Eggleston Connor: It was, it was interesting, kind of fucked up.
- 46:03Tad Eggleston: Lovecraft? Heavy Metal?
- 46:06Matt: Stop? No.
- 46:07Tad Eggleston: I'm shocked.
- 46:12Matt: Yeah.
- 46:13Matt: It's good stuff.
- 46:15Peter Eggleston Connor: You know…
- 46:20Tad Eggleston: I mean, it's almost like…
- 46:21Peter Eggleston Connor: Thank you.
- 46:22Tad Eggleston: Take one fucked up thing and put it together with another fucked up thing, you don't get a not-fucked-up thing.
- 46:31Matt: Like, they cancel each other out?
- 46:35Tad Eggleston: You know what I mean?
- 46:36Peter Eggleston Connor: A bunch of stuff that was only semi-fucked up.
- 46:39Tad Eggleston: Okay, that's fair.
- 46:43Peter Eggleston Connor: I mean, this is pretty much like, oh, hey, you, like, got a date with this girl, and you went to go meet her, and then you both got abducted, and she was dissected in front of you.
- 46:59Peter Eggleston Connor: Tell me that's not fucked up.
- 47:03Peter Eggleston Connor: Oh, and then… I think they lobotomized him?
- 47:07Matt: Well, it's not not fucked up.
- 47:17Peter Eggleston Connor: I mean, I'm not even fully sure, like…
- 47:20Peter Eggleston Connor: And don't get me wrong, I mostly know about the Lovecraft monster, so if there's other writings of his, it's… it's…
- 47:28Peter Eggleston Connor: Not as well of my purview, but…
- 47:33Peter Eggleston Connor: I'm not even sure where the Lovecraft element really comes in with this one, that's kind of where I'm at.
- 47:38Dillon Gilbertson: New…
- 47:39Matt: It's just a horror story.
- 47:41Dillon Gilbertson: It's more juice Every day, it's your everyday fucked-upness.
- 47:45Peter Eggleston Connor: No, it's… it's a… it's a…
- 47:47Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah, I mean, it's like… it's more adjacent to, like, real-world fucked-up-ness than…
- 47:55Matt: Well, crafty and fucked-up-ness.
- 47:58Peter Eggleston Connor: Yep.
- 47:59Matt: Yeah, yeah, I feel that.
- 48:02Peter Eggleston Connor: Oh.
- 48:04Peter Eggleston Connor: There's also that.
- 48:10Matt: There's just a lot.
- 48:14Peter Eggleston Connor: What?
- 48:15Dillon Gilbertson: Is this the last one?
- 48:17Matt: I think so.
- 48:17Peter Eggleston Connor: one.
- 48:19Dillon Gilbertson: Trying to remember what other story comes after this.
- 48:22Matt: Give me one second here, sorry.
- 48:23Peter Eggleston Connor: There's no story after this.
- 48:24Dillon Gilbertson: Very good.
- 48:25Matt: Nope, it was the last one.
- 48:28Dillon Gilbertson: I feel like we ripped through that really fast.
- 48:30Peter Eggleston Connor: Man.
- 48:31Matt: Yeah, an hour.
- 48:33Peter Eggleston Connor: If that.
- 48:35Peter Eggleston Connor: Probably closer to, like, 45 minutes.
- 48:43Peter Eggleston Connor: Yep. So, I guess we gotta go through and do the… do the thing?
- 48:47Dillon Gilbertson: Well, I guess we gotta do the thing now.
- 48:50Peter Eggleston Connor: Thing now. You know, talk about our favorite panels and favorite… oh, wait, I don't think there's any ongoing in this entire issue.
- 48:58Matt: Oh, totally not.
- 48:59Peter Eggleston Connor: Does it count if they split it up into two sections?
- 49:03Dillon Gilbertson: Oh, God.
- 49:04Matt: Perfectly.
- 49:04Dillon Gilbertson: It was the… well, then… well, the second one was not an ongoing, that was the conclusion.
- 49:11Peter Eggleston Connor: Right, but it would be part of an argument.
- 49:12Dillon Gilbertson: Part of the ongoing, yeah.
- 49:14Matt: Oh, no.
- 49:16Peter Eggleston Connor: So, first part…
- 49:18Dillon Gilbertson: I think Dunwish Horror has to be everybody's favorite ongoing, yeah.
- 49:23Dillon Gilbertson: By default, it's everybody's favorite.
- 49:25Matt: Yeah.
- 49:26Peter Eggleston Connor: Give it ongoing.
- 49:27Dillon Gilbertson: Well, congratulations, Dunwich, you did it. You got into our favorites.
- 49:34Matt: Live right in there.
- 49:39Dillon Gilbertson: I think you are the only one that has access to that document, Tad.
- 49:42Tad Eggleston: I'm pulling it up right now.
- 49:47Tad Eggleston: It's been a while.
- 49:55Tad Eggleston: There we go.
- 50:09Tad Eggleston: October.
- 50:13Tad Eggleston: 1979.
- 50:16Tad Eggleston: No ongoing, so we go straight to story. Alright, guys.
- 50:21Tad Eggleston: Favorite stories… I'm gonna sit this one out, just because I… I didn't…
- 50:27Tad Eggleston: My brain isn't doing well enough.
- 50:30Tad Eggleston: So it's just gonna…
- 50:31Matt: Fair enough.
- 50:32Tad Eggleston: Through you.
- 50:33Matt: I'm going with KTulu by Mobius.
- 50:37Matt: That's my favorite story.
- 50:39Peter Eggleston Connor: I'm gonna go with the thing.
- 50:42Matt: That was my very close second.
- 50:46Peter Eggleston Connor: Yup.
- 50:49Peter Eggleston Connor: Are we skipping recurring this week?
- 50:51Matt: Yes.
- 50:52Tad Eggleston: Yes.
- 50:53Peter Eggleston Connor: Dylan, what's your favorite story, though?
- 50:57Matt: He's muted. I don't think he knows.
- 51:00Matt: He's talking, but we can't hear.
- 51:01Dillon Gilbertson: It's either… it's really close, it's either the first story.
- 51:07Dillon Gilbertson: what was it, Final Justice, or whatever?
- 51:10Dillon Gilbertson: Or… or that, like, short poem.
- 51:13Dillon Gilbertson: About things crouching in your living room.
- 51:16Matt: That was the next one.
- 51:18Dillon Gilbertson: Was that the very next story?
- 51:20Peter Eggleston Connor: It's not putting in this week, you just get to have two.
- 51:23Matt: Oh, no, it wasn't the next one. Dunwich Horror was the next one.
- 51:26Dillon Gilbertson: Idiot.
- 51:31Tad Eggleston: You can have them both. You can take my spot.
- 51:35Tad Eggleston: I'm down with that.
- 51:38Peter Eggleston Connor: I mean, we play whatever rules we want to anyways, right?
- 51:41Tad Eggleston: That's true.
- 51:43Dillon Gilbertson: No, I didn't really like the end of the poem one. I'm gonna go with the final justice, or whatever it was called.
- 51:48Matt: Nice.
- 51:50Matt: It was a good story.
- 51:51Peter Eggleston Connor: That was a good story. I did like that.
- 51:54Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah.
- 51:57Tad Eggleston: Mmm.
- 51:58Peter Eggleston Connor: A lot of good stories.
- 52:02Peter Eggleston Connor: Not really any good.
- 52:03Matt: Reminiscent of that Archive 81. Have you guys seen that on Netflix?
- 52:07Dillon Gilbertson: Archive 81.
- 52:09Matt: Yeah.
- 52:10Dillon Gilbertson: No.
- 52:11Matt: Alright, wow.
- 52:14Matt: I'm gonna…
- 52:14Dillon Gilbertson: by, then.
- 52:16Peter Eggleston Connor: Can I just play all of Necronomicon for my favorite panel?
- 52:20Matt: Yukon?
- 52:24Peter Eggleston Connor: What?
- 52:25Matt: You can, why not?
- 52:27Peter Eggleston Connor: Nuh-
- 52:28Matt: It was pretty dope.
- 52:34Peter Eggleston Connor: I mean, if you're talking about H.P. Lovecraft, it's like… Fantastic.
- 52:38Dillon Gilbertson: Alrighty.
- 52:39Peter Eggleston Connor: Lovecraftian.
- 52:40Matt: Oh, yeah, I did pass it. Which one are we doing?
- 52:45Matt: There we go.
- 52:47Dillon Gilbertson: There you go.
- 52:48Matt: Yeah.
- 52:50Matt: Yeah, this whole thing was pretty cool. It reminds me of, like, Leonardo da Vinci's… Books.
- 53:00Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah, that makes… yeah. I mean, like, that… that… It definitely does that.
- 53:06Matt: God.
- 53:06Peter Eggleston Connor: While also still, like, having to, like… Gibberish scribbling.
- 53:11Matt: Makes it like.
- 53:11Peter Eggleston Connor: Hard to read.
- 53:13Matt: Yup.
- 53:18Dillon Gilbertson: I'm gonna second that for favorite panel.
- 53:21Peter Eggleston Connor: It's just Necronomica.
- 53:23Dillon Gilbertson: On the.
- 53:24Tad Eggleston: Well, I mean…
- 53:27Tad Eggleston: That makes sense, it's Drew A. Never, ever, EVER give up an opportunity to back Drew A.
- 53:38Tad Eggleston: It's almost like you're related or have a fiduciary, stake, Dylan, I'm just saying.
- 53:48Matt: He gets… he gets the nickel deposit for saying the name.
- 53:51Dillon Gilbertson: Right.
- 53:52Tad Eggleston: I mean, it makes sense with Matt and Corbin. I don't think that's a relationship, that's just Matt likes dick.
- 54:00Matt: Oh, man, drawings of dick. Drawings of dick.
- 54:03Matt: well done drawings of Dick.
- 54:07Matt: And boobs!
- 54:09Tad Eggleston: It takes him back to his elementary school days, and the sketches that he did, and the margins of all of his notebooks.
- 54:17Matt: And my Boy Scout days? Yeah. Boy Scout years, Scoutmaster van.
- 54:25Matt: Anyway… My favorite panel is this one right here, the…
- 54:30Dillon Gilbertson: this one.
- 54:30Matt: Monster from the…
- 54:31Peter Eggleston Connor: A reveal. I'm like, horror.
- 54:35Matt: I love that. I like that.
- 54:36Peter Eggleston Connor: That was a really good one.
- 54:38Matt: Yeah.
- 54:41Tad Eggleston: pages that…
- 54:43Matt: Hey, Nim!
- 54:46Matt: It is Paige… 79, bottom panel.
- 54:55Matt: And it's, like, 3 quarters of the page, 2 thirds anyway.
- 55:02Tad Eggleston: Cool, cool.
- 55:09Tad Eggleston: Well, we've discovered once again that the key to having a tight episode of 22 panels is to have me involved as little as possible. I'm the…
- 55:21Tad Eggleston: I'm the seed of all tangents.
- 55:27Matt: That's alright.
- 55:28Peter Eggleston Connor: Seriously.
- 55:28Matt: Maybe that's, maybe that'.
- 55:29Peter Eggleston Connor: That's half of the.
- 55:30Matt: Trump, Dad.
- 55:31Tad Eggleston: It might be.
- 55:32Peter Eggleston Connor: We're also not, like, reading Metal Hurlamp 4 and discussing that, otherwise this probably would have been longer.
- 55:40Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 55:41Tad Eggleston: Yeah, we have done metal errlons lately, and those are definitely longer.
- 55:45Matt: Yeah, this was only 100 feet.
- 55:46Tad Eggleston: Amazing.
- 55:48Matt: This was only 100 pages with ads and other stuff. I mean…
- 55:51Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah.
- 55:52Matt: Not super long.
- 55:55Peter Eggleston Connor: Nope.
- 55:57Peter Eggleston Connor: We could do metal hairline 4 next time.
- 56:01Tad Eggleston: So…
- 56:03Peter Eggleston Connor: Morphine…
- 56:05Matt: Oh, maybe I should say this is my favorite panel.
- 56:08Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah.
- 56:09Matt: No.
- 56:10Tad Eggleston: And…
- 56:11Matt: The end!
- 56:13Tad Eggleston: Didn't we… didn't one of you do that for… for the bad translation in 1996?
- 56:20Matt: Maybe some… I don't know, I don't remember.
- 56:22Tad Eggleston: It's funny, though.
- 56:25Peter Eggleston Connor: I don't know if we ever… Did we?
- 56:28Tad Eggleston: he just…
- 56:29Peter Eggleston Connor: How am I doing? That's a great joke.
- 56:31Matt: It is a good joke, I like that.
- 56:33Peter Eggleston Connor: I… I think we, like, at least made mention of it, but I'm not sure that we actually selected it.
- 56:41Peter Eggleston Connor: But maybe if that issue was just particularly not… or wasn't particularly good, we might have…
- 56:47Peter Eggleston Connor: Just for the laughs.
- 56:54Tad Eggleston: I am nearly down for the count, so Matt, you want to take us out?
- 56:59Matt: Alright.
- 56:59Tad Eggleston: Otherwise, there'll be nobody to stop the recording.
- 57:02Matt: enough. I was gonna say, should we preview the next issue, but apparently we're just gonna continue after.
- 57:07Tad Eggleston: I don't even know if we've decided for certain if the next issue's gonna be…
- 57:13Tad Eggleston: The next heavy metal, or the next metal hurlat?
- 57:17Tad Eggleston: For that matter, we're 3-ishes beyond on new heavy metal, it's just been hard to get them into everybody's hands.
- 57:24Matt: Yeah…
- 57:27Peter Eggleston Connor: There's that.
- 57:29Tad Eggleston: I mean, if you guys want to decide that.
- 57:31Peter Eggleston Connor: Send us free… free copies!
- 57:34Peter Eggleston Connor: Do it!
- 57:35Matt: I wish…
- 57:36Tad Eggleston: At least… at least PDFs.
- 57:39Matt: Yeah!
- 57:40Matt: It's so wonderful.
- 57:41Tad Eggleston: I paid for the physical and the digital.
- 57:44Tad Eggleston: But the digital is, like, only on the website, and in a proprietary frame that makes it impossible to read on the website anyway.
- 57:54Peter Eggleston Connor: I think I paid for the physical, I don't remember if I paid for the digital, too, so…
- 57:59Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 58:01Peter Eggleston Connor: So they are getting money.
- 58:03Tad Eggleston: Yeah?
- 58:05Tad Eggleston: They've got him plenty of money. So Matt's pulling up the next old heavy metal, and it's got a cool enough cover, I'm willing to say we're doing it next. I like the Tiger.
- 58:14Matt: Can I just give you a little background? This is Joe Jusco's second cover for Heavy Metal, and it's a wrap-around cover, and it's the first time they showed nipples on the cover.
- 58:24Peter Eggleston Connor: I was gonna say… You like the tiger, and I like the woman, so, you know.
- 58:31Matt: I like the woman, too. Peter, I'm in your corner!
- 58:35Matt: Dylan!
- 58:36Tad Eggleston: See, see, it's green.
- 58:41Tad Eggleston: Hmm.
- 58:43Peter Eggleston Connor: Or maybe…
- 58:44Matt: One way, you're like a pussy.
- 58:50Dillon Gilbertson: Like this big tree thing in the background.
- 58:53Matt: Oh, fair enough, alright.
- 58:57Peter Eggleston Connor: This is why Dylan can never share his.
- 59:00Matt: discussion.
- 59:01Peter Eggleston Connor: Metal Magazine with anybody.
- 59:03Dillon Gilbertson: It's true.
- 59:07Peter Eggleston Connor: Bye.
- 59:08Peter Eggleston Connor: wife's like, how was your book club? He's like, oh, it was boring, you wouldn't like it.
- 59:16Dillon Gilbertson: She sits, maybe 7 feet away from me and listens to this whole thing every time we do it.
- 59:22Matt: Has he really?
- 59:22Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah.
- 59:24Tad Eggleston: So… so… Hi, Dylan's wife. I'm generally not the dirty one, that's Matt.
- 59:30Matt: That's me.
- 59:32Matt: I don't own it, I don't care.
- 59:34Peter Eggleston Connor: I don't help with that either.
- 59:36Peter Eggleston Connor: Whatever.
- 59:39Matt: Oh, hilarious.
- 59:41Tad Eggleston: So are you previewing more, or…
- 59:44Matt: I was gonna, but I lost it for some reason.
- 59:46Tad Eggleston: Yeah, you seem to have.
- 59:47Matt: Oh, that's why.
- 59:57Matt: Marks?
- 1:00:00Peter Eggleston Connor: the… We lost it.
- 1:00:02Matt: There we go. Let me upload this mother again.
- 1:00:08Peter Eggleston Connor: And there we go.
- 1:00:09Matt: And here we go.
- 1:00:11Peter Eggleston Connor: There is a very bare-ass naked man on one of those pages.
- 1:00:16Matt: I was not.
- 1:00:17Tad Eggleston: Must be Corbyn.
- 1:00:18Matt: here.
- 1:00:19Peter Eggleston Connor: Must be gorgeous.
- 1:00:24Matt: Hilarious.
- 1:00:28Matt: Alright, here's the back cover.
- 1:00:30Tad Eggleston: Lots of white space.
- 1:00:33Dillon Gilbertson: Hell yeah, some wraparound. More trees!
- 1:00:36Matt: Yes, that's why it's Jusco, man, it's awesome!
- 1:00:41Peter Eggleston Connor: Chicks and pussy.
- 1:00:42Matt: he actually.
- 1:00:43Dillon Gilbertson: Breeze, guys!
- 1:00:45Dillon Gilbertson: The trees…
- 1:00:45Tad Eggleston: I like the things coming out of the egg.
- 1:00:48Peter Eggleston Connor: the chat.
- 1:00:49Matt: Oh, they're cool.
- 1:00:51Matt: But that makes you ask, is it one thing, or is it two things? And how do two things come out of one egg?
- 1:00:55Tad Eggleston: And… Let me, let me make it…
- 1:01:01Peter Eggleston Connor: This is, like, long-necked lizard here, too, and that's kinda cool.
- 1:01:06Tad Eggleston: I mean, I guess it could be a double-headed alien thingy rather than… I think.
- 1:01:14Dillon Gilbertson: A Middle Earth album?
- 1:01:17Dillon Gilbertson: Great Hall pushing the orcs arrived.
- 1:01:19Peter Eggleston Connor: Alright, Matt, if you have… if you have this heavy metal, you need to go send in for that.
- 1:01:24Matt: Yeah, I wish I could, I would.
- 1:01:26Dillon Gilbertson: Earth album. I want… I want to know about…
- 1:01:28Matt: I do have it, and I would if I could, believe me.
- 1:01:31Peter Eggleston Connor: Oh, I'm just kidding.
- 1:01:33Dillon Gilbertson: I'm gonna…
- 1:01:33Tad Eggleston: 4 for 10 cents membership.
- 1:01:38Peter Eggleston Connor: Here's the contents, we got Corbin.
- 1:01:40Tad Eggleston: Yeah, we got some Corbin.
- 1:01:43Peter Eggleston Connor: We got some more air.
- 1:01:44Tad Eggleston: airtight garage.
- 1:01:46Matt: Got some more Voss.
