- 0:22SPEAKER_02: So I I constantly introduced myself to you.
- 0:25SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 0:25SPEAKER_02: Which, okay, thank you for remembering me.
- 0:28SPEAKER_02: I just think you're cool.
- 0:30SPEAKER_02: And so I just want to make sure that I know who that you know who I am.
- 0:34SPEAKER_01: I appreciate that.
- 0:35SPEAKER_02: Is that a good spin on that?
- 0:36SPEAKER_01: No, it's great.
- 0:37SPEAKER_01: No, it's great.
- 0:38SPEAKER_01: No, this is good.
- 0:39SPEAKER_01: I'm happy to be in the living room.
- 0:41SPEAKER_02: No, I'm so glad that you're here, and I'm so glad that we're finally getting to to sit down and talk and actually have a real conversation, which you've said that we've had a few.
- 0:50SPEAKER_02: And um, but this one's gonna be recorded.
- 0:57SPEAKER_02: So we'll remember.
- 1:00SPEAKER_02: This is sad.
- 1:02SPEAKER_02: Should I like get a doctor and stuff?
- 1:03SPEAKER_01: No, I think it's okay.
- 1:05SPEAKER_01: No, I don't think I think it's okay.
- 1:07SPEAKER_01: I think it was just, you know, what do you think?
- 1:09SPEAKER_02: Every time I meet you, I want you to I no, you're not forgettable.
- 1:12SPEAKER_02: I think I'm forgettable.
- 1:13SPEAKER_02: I do.
- 1:13SPEAKER_02: I always reintroduce myself to people all the time.
- 1:17SPEAKER_02: Like I went to my 20th high school reunion and I walked around and I was like, hi, I'm Liv Here, and they're like, We we knew you since fifth grade.
- 1:24SPEAKER_02: And I'm like, well, just in case.
- 1:26SPEAKER_01: I don't know, man.
- 1:27SPEAKER_01: I mean, I feel like if like if this happens to multiple people, it might be worth looking in the mirror.
- 1:33SPEAKER_02: I just want to make sure.
- 1:34SPEAKER_02: So what's great is that I had Siobhan on my show and we were taught, and she's uh we'll get to her about how she's involved with you, but professionally.
- 1:45SPEAKER_02: But um, but she said, Do you know Gary Goss?
- 1:48SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:49SPEAKER_02: On the on the show, right?
- 1:51SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 1:51SPEAKER_02: Okay, so your mom told you that.
- 1:53SPEAKER_02: What happened?
- 1:53SPEAKER_01: So I well, oh man.
- 1:55SPEAKER_01: Uh so Siobhan was an actress in a movie that we're doing now.
- 1:59SPEAKER_01: And so this is a long-standing joke that we have between the two of us because I've met you at events multiple times, and you've forgotten and reintroduced yourself multiple times.
- 2:08SPEAKER_01: Um we've had great conversations, and then we'll have the great same great conversation later, and it's really good.
- 2:14SPEAKER_01: And uh, I'll you'll just forget.
- 2:16SPEAKER_01: And so Siobhan brings me up, and my mom texts me and is like, Oh, the living room, they're talking about their movie.
- 2:20SPEAKER_01: Siobhan was talking about your movie.
- 2:22SPEAKER_01: And I was like, Okay, cool, let me turn it on.
- 2:23SPEAKER_01: And then Siobhan goes, like, oh, do you know Gary and my business partner, Bill?
- 2:27SPEAKER_01: And you go, No, never met him.
- 2:32SPEAKER_02: Okay, in all fairness, I did not know how to say your last name.
- 2:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so my name's five minutes ago.
- 2:37SPEAKER_01: I have stubbornly refused to change my last name, the phonetics of it.
- 2:42SPEAKER_01: Um, my last name is spelled G-A-S-S-E.
- 2:45SPEAKER_01: So it's very gassy, is how you'd think it would be.
- 2:48SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 2:48SPEAKER_01: It's gauze like a bandage.
- 2:50SPEAKER_02: And so have you gotten that your whole life?
- 2:52SPEAKER_01: Yes, 100%.
- 2:52SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 2:53SPEAKER_01: I remember I remember realizing I this is great.
- 2:56SPEAKER_01: This is what this podcast is about.
- 2:58SPEAKER_01: And uh this is the real brilliant.
- 3:00SPEAKER_01: I was five years old at summer camp, and they had my, I think, my Gatorade back when it was in glass bottles, and they're like, this is for Gary Gassy.
- 3:08SPEAKER_01: And I was like, I think that's me.
- 3:10SPEAKER_01: That was the first time.
- 3:11SPEAKER_02: That was the first time you realized that your name didn't.
- 3:14SPEAKER_02: Oh my god.
- 3:15SPEAKER_01: And it's been, you know, it's been really good.
- 3:17SPEAKER_01: I am, I am sometimes occasionally more of a Gary Gassy than a Gauze.
- 3:22SPEAKER_01: Um, so it it does work situationally.
- 3:26SPEAKER_01: But yeah, so I'm Gary Gass.
- 3:27SPEAKER_01: But it's Gary, it's Gary Gauz.
- 3:29SPEAKER_02: It's like you gotta you gotta lean into it.
- 3:30SPEAKER_02: Okay, so it's it's Gary Gauz.
- 3:32SPEAKER_02: And so now that we've you know, now I'll go down and tell Siobhan that I know who you are.
- 3:37SPEAKER_01: Um Siobhan gets gas, Siobhan says gassy too, so she may not know who I am.
- 3:42SPEAKER_02: Anything she wants.
- 3:42SPEAKER_02: Yes, I'm I'm right.
- 3:44SPEAKER_01: No, Siobhan is my like my wife and I have a joke um that uh she'll go, oh, your favorite person, your favorite woman ever, Siobhan Fallon Hogan.
- 3:53SPEAKER_01: And I was like, Yeah, 100%.
- 3:54SPEAKER_01: My favorite woman ever.
- 3:55SPEAKER_01: I love Siobhan Fallon Hogan.
- 3:57SPEAKER_02: She's fabulous.
- 3:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah, she's amazing.
- 3:58SPEAKER_02: What is there not to love?
- 3:59SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 4:00SPEAKER_02: She's very lovable.
- 4:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 4:02SPEAKER_01: And getting her on the movie was like really wild.
- 4:04SPEAKER_01: And the What does she do in the movie?
- 4:06SPEAKER_01: So she plays a character.
- 4:07SPEAKER_01: So we have a new movie coming out on EWTN called The Shepherd.
- 4:11SPEAKER_01: It's about the life of Blessed Stanley Rother.
- 4:13SPEAKER_01: And Siobhan plays Frankie, who was a missionary there at the time.
- 4:17SPEAKER_01: And so should that meant Siobhan came out and filmed with us in Guatemala and Santiago, and it was really she was the best on set.
- 4:24SPEAKER_01: And she's exactly the same.
- 4:25SPEAKER_01: Like, if you've ever seen Siobhan like speaking before, she's like, it's there's no difference.
- 4:29SPEAKER_02: She's there's no on and off the stage.
- 4:32SPEAKER_02: There's no, it's the same.
- 4:34SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 4:35SPEAKER_02: How how are you though?
- 4:36SPEAKER_02: As like in in the film industry, are you the same?
- 4:39SPEAKER_01: I'm not in the film industry.
- 4:41SPEAKER_01: I live in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.
- 4:43SPEAKER_01: I'm just a guy who makes some stuff, and I like make using cameras.
- 4:48SPEAKER_01: You guys are using cameras here.
- 4:49SPEAKER_01: This is the industry we're all in it.
- 4:50SPEAKER_01: We're tell stories.
- 4:51SPEAKER_02: I'm a filmmaker.
- 4:52SPEAKER_02: No, I'm not.
- 4:53SPEAKER_02: I'm not.
- 4:53SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we're all filmmakers.
- 4:55SPEAKER_01: You know, I so I I run a company called Coronation uh Media, and we have this new branch, Coronation Studios, where we do uh film.
- 5:03SPEAKER_01: And so this is this is one of our this is our first like narrative.
- 5:06SPEAKER_02: But this is you.
- 5:07SPEAKER_02: You're like this all the time.
- 5:09SPEAKER_02: I remember.
- 5:09SPEAKER_01: Yes, you're like this all the time.
- 5:12SPEAKER_02: But this is how you are, even when you're working.
- 5:13SPEAKER_02: But you've got a beautiful wife who you love.
- 5:15SPEAKER_01: Yes, Jen.
- 5:16SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 5:17SPEAKER_02: Oh, her name's Jen?
- 5:18SPEAKER_01: Her name is Jen.
- 5:19SPEAKER_02: Did I know that?
- 5:20SPEAKER_01: No, you haven't met her yet.
- 5:23SPEAKER_01: No, my wife Jen and I and my business partner Bill started the company together.
- 5:27SPEAKER_02: Really?
- 5:28SPEAKER_02: So it's kind of like a whole that's cute.
- 5:30SPEAKER_01: And our yeah, Bill's wife Alana is Jen's best friend, and our kids are great friends, and so it's really and we live in Gettysburg and we're not in the film industry.
- 5:39SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 5:39SPEAKER_02: No.
- 5:39SPEAKER_01: You just make films.
- 5:42SPEAKER_02: All right.
- 5:43SPEAKER_02: Tomato tomato.
- 5:44SPEAKER_01: Are we like way over the line?
- 5:46SPEAKER_01: Like laughing proportionate to the first beginning of it.
- 5:49SPEAKER_02: No, this is way what I mean.
- 5:51SPEAKER_00: This is the living room.
- 5:52SPEAKER_02: Yeah, if you were in my living room, wouldn't we be talking about this?
- 5:54SPEAKER_02: I wonder how many kids you have.
- 5:56SPEAKER_00: I have five kids.
- 5:56SPEAKER_02: You have five kids?
- 5:58SPEAKER_00: Five kids.
- 5:58SPEAKER_00: How many kids do you have?
- 5:59SPEAKER_02: Old enough to have five kids.
- 6:00SPEAKER_02: I only have two.
- 6:01SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 6:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but they're almost eight years apart.
- 6:04SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 6:04SPEAKER_02: I wanted five.
- 6:05SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 6:05SPEAKER_02: But Jesus had other plans.
- 6:07SPEAKER_02: I also wanted to be a hot blonde.
- 6:09SPEAKER_02: Also.
- 6:10SPEAKER_02: That's what my last tale.
- 6:13SPEAKER_02: He just doesn't agree with me.
- 6:16SPEAKER_02: I want to be a musical genius on Broadway.
- 6:19SPEAKER_02: Again, a no.
- 6:20SPEAKER_02: So anyway, what uh back to you.
- 6:22SPEAKER_02: Yes, right.
- 6:22SPEAKER_02: Um, so you have five children.
- 6:24SPEAKER_01: I have five children.
- 6:25SPEAKER_02: Are they boys or girls?
- 6:26SPEAKER_01: I have two boys, three girls.
- 6:27SPEAKER_01: And how old are they?
- 6:28SPEAKER_01: So it's 13 down to three months.
- 6:31SPEAKER_02: You have a three-month-old?
- 6:33SPEAKER_01: I know, I know.
- 6:34SPEAKER_02: You look very rested.
- 6:35SPEAKER_01: Uh, this I know.
- 6:37SPEAKER_01: Well, okay, so she's three months.
- 6:40SPEAKER_01: I'm actually, so we're here.
- 6:41SPEAKER_01: I'm sleeping better because I am at this conference.
- 6:45SPEAKER_01: So I actually am well rested right now, but at home, no, we're not currently.
- 6:49SPEAKER_02: Well, congratulations.
- 6:51SPEAKER_02: That's really great.
- 6:53SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's awesome.
- 6:54SPEAKER_02: So, how did you meet Jen?
- 6:55SPEAKER_01: Jen and I met uh at college at Mount St.
- 6:58SPEAKER_01: Mary's uh university.
- 7:00SPEAKER_01: Um, also, that's the source code for this movie because that's where Blessed Stanley went to seminary.
- 7:05SPEAKER_01: So we met in college and we're I didn't know college, yeah, yeah.
- 7:08SPEAKER_01: And that's where we I met Bill, and that's what our company was in Emmitsburg, Maryland for a while.
- 7:13SPEAKER_01: Now we're in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.
- 7:15SPEAKER_01: Um, but that's where Blessed Stanley went to seminary.
- 7:18SPEAKER_01: Also, the Mount St.
- 7:19SPEAKER_01: Mary Seminary is like hugely like they call it the Cradle of Bishops because they have had so many bishops and really come through.
- 7:26SPEAKER_02: In Maryland?
- 7:27SPEAKER_01: In Maryland, yeah.
- 7:28SPEAKER_02: Well, it is Mary's last.
- 7:29SPEAKER_01: It's the second oldest Catholic school in the country.
- 7:31SPEAKER_02: What's the first?
- 7:32SPEAKER_01: I don't care.
- 7:39SPEAKER_01: No, it's just the mouth, the mountain's gonna be.
- 7:41SPEAKER_02: The world may never, you know what?
- 7:42SPEAKER_02: That's what we have Google.
- 7:44SPEAKER_02: You know, if you want to know, if you care to know, Google it.
- 7:47SPEAKER_02: We don't know.
- 7:50SPEAKER_02: That's fabulous.
- 7:51SPEAKER_01: I actually it might be Georgetown.
- 7:53SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 7:53SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 7:54SPEAKER_01: No, it couldn't be, I don't know.
- 7:55SPEAKER_01: It's is Georgetown a Catholic school?
- 7:57SPEAKER_01: I think so.
- 7:57SPEAKER_01: They might, you know, if George Conn wants to be a client, call me they're listening.
- 8:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah, 100%.
- 8:03SPEAKER_02: We are big in Georgetown.
- 8:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I don't I don't actually know the oldest kind of school.
- 8:06SPEAKER_02: Yeah, we'll figure it out.
- 8:08SPEAKER_02: It's fine.
- 8:08SPEAKER_02: No one cares.
- 8:09SPEAKER_02: Um, I mean they care deeply.
- 8:11SPEAKER_02: So, okay, second oldest in the nation.
- 8:14SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 8:14SPEAKER_02: How why did you go there?
- 8:15SPEAKER_02: What made you choose it?
- 8:16SPEAKER_01: Oh my gosh.
- 8:17SPEAKER_01: So among I applied to a few places.
- 8:19SPEAKER_01: The Mount is the one that I felt like the best about.
- 8:21SPEAKER_01: The campus is is wonderful.
- 8:23SPEAKER_01: It's like uh literally, so if Emmitsburg is this small Catholic town, they have Mother Seaton Shrine.
- 8:30SPEAKER_01: Mother Seton is there, her body's there, yep.
- 8:32SPEAKER_01: And then Blessed Stanley, he was there, went to seminary there.
- 8:36SPEAKER_01: Like Mother Seton's kids went to school at Mount St.
- 8:38SPEAKER_01: Mary's back, like like whatever however a hundred years ago that was.
- 8:43SPEAKER_01: Um, so and it's it's a weirdly Catholic, small little town.
- 8:47SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 8:48SPEAKER_01: Um, and so and the campus is is wonderful.
- 8:50SPEAKER_01: And I I had chosen not to go to film school um because I talked to a producer and he was like, I was like, hey, should I go to film school?
- 8:58SPEAKER_01: I'm already sort of like working in video.
- 9:01SPEAKER_01: And he was like, No, uh, I think you should go to school and learn something else and then tell stories about it.
- 9:06SPEAKER_01: So I decided, hey, that's a great idea.
- 9:07SPEAKER_01: I'll study theology and philosophy, totally marketable, and we'll make stories about that.
- 9:13SPEAKER_02: Your parents were thrilled.
- 9:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah, well, you know, I think sort of.
- 9:17SPEAKER_02: They're fine.
- 9:17SPEAKER_02: No, I'm kidding.
- 9:18SPEAKER_02: They're probably they probably are thrilled.
- 9:20SPEAKER_02: So, okay, so you were always interested in film, like when you were a little kid, was that kind of your thing?
- 9:25SPEAKER_02: Were you like Steven Spielberg and you like film stuff on the film?
- 9:28SPEAKER_01: Exactly like Steven Spielberg.
- 9:30SPEAKER_02: I can barely tell y'all apart.
- 9:31SPEAKER_02: That's why I don't know you because I go a moment like that.
- 9:33SPEAKER_01: When you and Steven meet, you're just like, oh, is this Gary?
- 9:36SPEAKER_01: No, um, yeah, no, I think I yeah, so uh ever since I was a little kid, yeah.
- 9:41SPEAKER_02: Really?
- 9:41SPEAKER_02: And this is what you've always wanted to do, although you're not a filmmaker.
- 9:44SPEAKER_01: No, no, no, can't claim that.
- 9:46SPEAKER_02: Okay, what do you claim?
- 9:47SPEAKER_01: What how I am, I I guess I am.
- 9:49SPEAKER_01: So I I'm a business owner, filmmaker, I'm just a guy.
- 9:53SPEAKER_01: I'm in the living room.
- 9:54SPEAKER_01: Um, I study theology.
- 9:56SPEAKER_01: No, I I ever since I was little.
- 9:57SPEAKER_01: So I I remember watching um The Prince and the Pauper, that old on like two of the classic movies with my mom.
- 10:05SPEAKER_01: And she was and then she revealed to me that like she was like, Oh, well, it might, and I don't even know, I haven't seen this movie in forever.
- 10:11SPEAKER_01: But she was like, Oh, yeah, it's actually like the same actor playing both parts and that like blue.
- 10:17SPEAKER_02: Like Haley Mills and Parent Trap.
- 10:19SPEAKER_01: Yep, yep.
- 10:20SPEAKER_01: Or Lindsay Lohan.
- 10:21SPEAKER_02: Lindsay Lohan.
- 10:22SPEAKER_01: My daughter is mainlining that that movie right now.
- 10:24SPEAKER_01: Really?
- 10:25SPEAKER_01: Yes, like the Parent Trap Lindsay Lohan version was playing on repeat for like a week before I came to this conference.
- 10:32SPEAKER_01: Are you serious?
- 10:34SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 10:34SPEAKER_01: I mean, it's a classic now, it's a great movie.
- 10:36SPEAKER_01: Oh, I love that movie.
- 10:37SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's it is wonderful.
- 10:38SPEAKER_02: What is your favorite movie that you haven't been a part of?
- 10:42SPEAKER_01: Um, so my my default answer is Children of Men.
- 10:47SPEAKER_01: Uh, I don't know if you've seen it.
- 10:48SPEAKER_01: You know Children of Men?
- 10:49SPEAKER_01: No.
- 10:50SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 10:51SPEAKER_02: Do I look like I know it?
- 10:52SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 10:53SPEAKER_01: You might have seen it forgotten.
- 10:54SPEAKER_01: Um, I don't know.
- 10:55SPEAKER_01: No, I mean it's like we've had a very light conversation.
- 10:58SPEAKER_01: It's not a light movie, but Children of Men is my default.
- 11:00SPEAKER_01: Um I don't know.
- 11:02SPEAKER_01: I I like I I like most movies that I've seen.
- 11:06SPEAKER_01: Okay, pick a movie that I know that you love.
- 11:09SPEAKER_01: Sure.
- 11:09SPEAKER_01: What movies do you know?
- 11:11SPEAKER_01: Um Well, the one that I say, like the one that got me into when I really like it's it's a pat answer, but Star Wars was a big thing when I was a little boy.
- 11:19SPEAKER_00: That's fair.
- 11:20SPEAKER_01: It's like basically every every filmmaker has been.
- 11:22SPEAKER_02: Have you thought about doing like science fiction and Catholicism?
- 11:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I haven't been able to figure that take out, but I've tried.
- 11:31SPEAKER_01: I've tried to figure it out.
- 11:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I'm like a like I love genre.
- 11:34SPEAKER_02: Are you a writer?
- 11:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I wrote, uh yes.
- 11:36SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 11:37SPEAKER_02: What do you not do?
- 11:38SPEAKER_02: Okay, so put a put a pen in the film stuff.
- 11:42SPEAKER_02: I get it.
- 11:42SPEAKER_02: You're talented.
- 11:43SPEAKER_02: All right, on the other side of all that gear.
- 11:46SPEAKER_01: No one's seen the movie yet.
- 11:48SPEAKER_02: I heard the trailer was amazing.
- 11:50SPEAKER_01: The trailer was very good.
- 11:51SPEAKER_01: I can say that, but you know, we'll see.
- 11:54SPEAKER_02: We need to work on we need to work on you just owning it.
- 11:57SPEAKER_02: I uh yeah.
- 11:58SPEAKER_02: Own it and say, yeah, it was amazing.
- 12:01SPEAKER_02: It's gonna be life-changing.
- 12:02SPEAKER_01: The process was amazing.
- 12:03SPEAKER_01: The movie is gonna be great.
- 12:04SPEAKER_01: I I think the main thing I'm excited about about this movie particularly is people knowing who Stanley Ruther is.
- 12:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's a huge deal.
- 12:12SPEAKER_01: And so there's actually like two, there's a documentary coming out about him very soon that the diocese put together that I'm stoked about.
- 12:20SPEAKER_01: And Martin Sheen is like narrating it, and like then we're doing the narrative next year is gonna come out, and it stars Shane West.
- 12:27SPEAKER_01: Well, have you seen Walk to Remember?
- 12:29SPEAKER_02: I mean, hello.
- 12:30SPEAKER_01: Okay, so there's a movie.
- 12:30SPEAKER_01: That's a great movie.
- 12:31SPEAKER_01: That's a good one.
- 12:32SPEAKER_01: Walk to Remember, that's a good one.
- 12:33SPEAKER_01: That is a really good movie.
- 12:34SPEAKER_01: Shane West.
- 12:35SPEAKER_01: It's so sad.
- 12:36SPEAKER_01: Shane West plays uh Blessed Stanley Ruther.
- 12:38SPEAKER_01: And so that, yeah, I mean, just excited that people are get to know who this man is.
- 12:42SPEAKER_01: Because like I even growing up, Catholic, I had never heard of him before I went to school, and now like people are starting to realize who he is and the mission that he had, and his story is awesome.
- 12:52SPEAKER_02: So you're gonna tell it.
- 12:53SPEAKER_02: I'm excited.
- 12:53SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you're a storyteller.
- 12:55SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 12:55SPEAKER_02: How does that's right?
- 12:56SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 12:57SPEAKER_01: Storyteller, filmmaker.
- 12:58SPEAKER_02: Okay, yeah.
- 12:59SPEAKER_01: Just all around good dude.
- 13:02SPEAKER_02: When you're not doing that though, what else do you do creatively?
- 13:04SPEAKER_02: Like, are you into sports?
- 13:05SPEAKER_02: Are you into were you into the whole football thing that was happening this summer?
- 13:09SPEAKER_02: Were you into that at all?
- 13:10SPEAKER_01: No, you know, so this was a point of I I was not into sports.
- 13:14SPEAKER_01: My dad wanted me to be into sports.
- 13:16SPEAKER_01: My little brother was.
- 13:17SPEAKER_01: He was the one who connected with my dad there.
- 13:19SPEAKER_01: I never understood fully.
- 13:21SPEAKER_01: I would rather deal with watching people's emotions and people be sad in movies.
- 13:26SPEAKER_01: Um, so I was more of a movie guide.
- 13:28SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 13:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 13:29SPEAKER_02: So do you think living not in somewhere like a Hollywood or in a Manhattan, do you feel living in Gettysburg?
- 13:37SPEAKER_02: Does that, I don't know, like kind of protect your family and your interesting.
- 13:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 13:41SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 13:42SPEAKER_01: You know?
- 13:42SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 13:42SPEAKER_01: I think like I I don't know.
- 13:44SPEAKER_01: I so it it was, I've always so I can I can talk a little bit about the company.
- 13:49SPEAKER_01: So Coronation, we have an animation department and we have a live action department.
- 13:53SPEAKER_01: We've we've come alongside people to do branded content for 14 years.
- 13:57SPEAKER_01: We've been in operation, and now we're doing this studios thing.
- 14:01SPEAKER_01: I think that the whole I've always been a little bit like uh inspired by like George Lucas leaving LA to go to San Francisco, right?
- 14:10SPEAKER_01: Or like Peter Jackson doing the Lord of the Rings in New Zealand, and I've always just thought, like, oh well, yeah, you can just do this.
- 14:17SPEAKER_01: So I don't know that it was like a fully intentional decision not to be in LA or New York.
- 14:22SPEAKER_01: Um, but Maryland and Emmitsburg and Gettysburg just sort of caught me.
- 14:26SPEAKER_01: And then we sort of like built a company around this, and now we have people moving from LA and moving from Texas and coming and living in Gettysburg.
- 14:35SPEAKER_01: And uh that's been that's been a really beautiful sort of thing.
- 14:39SPEAKER_01: But it's a little bit of a I'm not sure it wasn't a full plan.
- 14:41SPEAKER_01: It sort of just flowered there.
- 14:43SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 14:43SPEAKER_01: It was God's plan.
- 14:44SPEAKER_01: I think so.
- 14:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so for sure.
- 14:46SPEAKER_02: Yeah, absolutely.
- 14:47SPEAKER_02: But I wonder, I don't know, that's kind of interesting to think about you being there and and how that has protected your marriage and your and your family, whether or not that you're even aware of it, or even your business relationships.
- 14:57SPEAKER_02: Because it is hard.
- 14:58SPEAKER_02: I mean, not that I need to tell you, I mean, just even in the Catholic sphere, sure, it's an interesting place to be.
- 15:05SPEAKER_02: There's a lot of people, there's some ego involved.
- 15:07SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I don't know if you've come up with that, if you've come up against an ego.
- 15:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 15:12SPEAKER_02: You have an ego?
- 15:13SPEAKER_00: Yeah, severe big ego.
- 15:15SPEAKER_02: No, I mean, like, I've been shocked because here's the thing no one's immune to the human condition.
- 15:21SPEAKER_02: Yeah, sure.
- 15:21SPEAKER_02: And so it's been interesting.
- 15:23SPEAKER_02: The little bit I'm involved in media, a little the little that I'm involved in, whatever, I'll come up with people, you know, and I'll meet people who I'm like, you're not Beyonce.
- 15:31SPEAKER_02: Like, what are you doing?
- 15:32SPEAKER_02: Like, calm down, you know.
- 15:33SPEAKER_02: But they are very, and you're like, but this is the Catholic world.
- 15:37SPEAKER_02: So I can't imagine what the media and film industry is like where it isn't, you know, there isn't this umbrella of Catholicism where it's just going after yourself or whatever that looks like.
- 15:50SPEAKER_02: So I was just wondering if you had any intake on that.
- 15:52SPEAKER_01: Like if you had any thoughts about it.
- 15:54SPEAKER_01: I think that the one thing that I feel like about film and about like where film is right now, or like storytelling, is like there's so many different ways to do it.
- 16:02SPEAKER_01: There's so many different platforms to do it, and like the whole like old Hollywood has is gone.
- 16:07SPEAKER_01: And like the whole like, and even like the the industry, whatever that means, has is fracturing and splintering and things are shifting.
- 16:14SPEAKER_01: And I think like I think that I am not interested in filmmaking if it's associated with like the bolstering of like ego, because like I think that like the the best version of storytelling is like you're entrusted with something beautiful that's a story or a gift, and you may it may be your own inspiration or the Holy Spirit or a story like this one that we're telling that we're like sort of no pun intended shepherding into existence.
- 16:37SPEAKER_01: But it's like I I don't I'm just a vessel by which like I'm trying to like push this story out into the world.
- 16:44SPEAKER_01: So I think for me, maybe like the whole Gettysburg versus LA thing, it's like if I think some people are called to be in there, and some people are called to be in Gettysburg, and some people are called to be wherever they are.
- 16:55SPEAKER_01: But I I think it should just be fun and life-affirming, and like sets often can be like sort of combative and weird and competitive.
- 17:03SPEAKER_01: But like my thing is like, hey, look, we get to play and tell stories, and like that is a great, great gift.
- 17:10SPEAKER_01: Like this doesn't, it doesn't have to be like fight for your life necessarily.
- 17:14SPEAKER_01: That said, LA it it is for a lot of people, yeah.
- 17:17SPEAKER_01: There is a lot of like competitiveness, and like people have to like fight for fight for their next meal.
- 17:23SPEAKER_01: So I think in in somewhere like Gettysburg or even shooting in Guatemala, it's like we are just like, dude, we're so lucky that's to be making stories.
- 17:30SPEAKER_01: Like so, I think that it does maybe insulate ego a little bit.
- 17:34SPEAKER_01: No, I think that's fabulous.
- 17:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 17:36SPEAKER_02: So okay, how did your faith evolve during this process?
- 17:41SPEAKER_02: Because this is your first feature film.
- 17:43SPEAKER_01: Uh the first people know about.
- 17:46SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah.
- 17:47SPEAKER_01: I have a really bad feature film that I did when I was like 18, and I was the main character, and it uh it wasn't that bad, but I I think it basically exists on my phone now.
- 18:00SPEAKER_01: Um, we did submit to Sundance and I did you really?
- 18:03SPEAKER_01: I'm sure they threw it out immediately.
- 18:05SPEAKER_01: So it's my second technically.
- 18:07SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 18:07SPEAKER_01: My second technically, but it's my first like real.
- 18:10SPEAKER_02: Okay, your first professional as a filmmaker storyteller doing this thing.
- 18:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 18:15SPEAKER_02: Okay, so how did your how did your faith evolve during this process?
- 18:19SPEAKER_02: Because I'm sure you went through all sorts of things, positive and negative.
- 18:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I don't know.
- 18:24SPEAKER_01: I mean, like so, so we we had this, we had this film, and I've made I have made a career at Coronation telling the stories of a lot of saints, usually in shorter formats, um, and dealing with matters of faith a lot.
- 18:39SPEAKER_01: So like the territory was not unknown.
- 18:41SPEAKER_01: Like I've told many stories about priests, I've told many stories about, you know, people of faith.
- 18:45SPEAKER_01: But this one was particular in that I needed to really get to know Blessed Stanley Ruther.
- 18:50SPEAKER_01: And that meant for us, like there was like virtually no way to not do it right.
- 18:54SPEAKER_01: Like, I just like I felt like I was entrusted with a gift that was like, I gotta tell this guy's story, I gotta do it right.
- 19:00SPEAKER_01: And that meant uh meeting people who knew him.
- 19:03SPEAKER_01: Um, it meant meeting groups that were working with him.
- 19:05SPEAKER_01: So we worked with a great um missions group, Mamigos de Ablas.
- 19:09SPEAKER_01: And I I'm just you're Emily sitting right there, but she works with Amigos de Aplas and uh plugged us into the community down in Santiago Atilon.
- 19:18SPEAKER_01: Um and so we got to really meet the people who knew him and tell stories firsthand about like what it was like to meet this like living saint.
- 19:27SPEAKER_01: Um and uh that was that was very I I honestly struggled with understanding certain elements of Blessed Stanley Rother.
- 19:37SPEAKER_01: He was someone who like was challenging to me in ways.
- 19:40SPEAKER_01: He was a man who like he had passions and he was like he had anger and like he and he had a sense of justice, but he was also not like the he wasn't prone to like getting into theological debates.
- 19:50SPEAKER_01: So some things that like really bother Catholics, he would just sort of toss away and then focus on doing the work.
- 19:56SPEAKER_01: And so I think I think that how I changed was maybe like just focus on the work.
- 20:02SPEAKER_01: You you don't need you can be quiet and just do the work, which I've done a really great job in this podcast, being quiet.
- 20:08SPEAKER_01: But I don't know.
- 20:09SPEAKER_01: I think there honestly it was a level of detachment from where it was like God was basically just like, yeah, this story is not it's not about you at all.
- 20:18SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 20:18SPEAKER_01: And you're just you're just there.
- 20:20SPEAKER_01: You're just there, you're just there.
- 20:21SPEAKER_01: You have to press the buttons that you know I want you to press, and that's it.
- 20:24SPEAKER_02: Are you more comfortable behind the camera?
- 20:26SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 20:28SPEAKER_02: You're not you this is not you're not feeling like the you're not in your zone.
- 20:32SPEAKER_01: I abandoned acting a long time ago after my first feature.
- 20:35SPEAKER_01: I was done.
- 20:36SPEAKER_01: So yeah, no.
- 20:37SPEAKER_01: I like being behind the camera.
- 20:38SPEAKER_02: What makes a feature a feature?
- 20:40SPEAKER_02: Like, I don't know the difference.
- 20:42SPEAKER_01: I don't know what the technical designation is.
- 20:44SPEAKER_01: I so I think it's like you like like colloquially, it would be probably uh north of 70 minutes.
- 20:51SPEAKER_01: Oh, okay.
- 20:51SPEAKER_01: So it's like a timed kind of a situation.
- 20:54SPEAKER_01: That's how it's considered.
- 20:55SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 20:55SPEAKER_01: So like a short is typically anything that's under 50.
- 20:58SPEAKER_01: It's like a film festival, but the logic is just you know, it's arbitrary.
- 21:02SPEAKER_02: It's just whatever.
- 21:02SPEAKER_01: Long enough to go to the movie theater and buy a ticket, you know, and adjust a bucket of popcorn investment.
- 21:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah, exactly.
- 21:08SPEAKER_02: Well, congratulations on the whole feature film thing and with EWTN.
- 21:13SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's a big deal.
- 21:15SPEAKER_02: I mean, they're doing all sorts of amazing new content.
- 21:18SPEAKER_01: It's really, it's really amazing what they're doing.
- 21:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's really amazing.
- 21:21SPEAKER_01: So, like the what David Henry's doing with Seeking Beauty or with uh a buddy of mine, Sean Scavalin.
- 21:27SPEAKER_01: I pronounce his name horribly.
- 21:28SPEAKER_01: Now I'm gonna I'm gonna be guilty of doing the same thing.
- 21:31SPEAKER_01: I don't know, Sean.
- 21:32SPEAKER_01: Sean Sean is doing this, he's a wonderful documentary filmmaker and filmmaker generally, but he's doing this story on um uh Blessed Yusto Takayama, and it's a long, it's so cool.
- 21:42SPEAKER_01: He's doing uh it's like a I think it's three parts, and it's about this samurai saint.
- 21:48SPEAKER_01: He was a samurai and a saint.
- 21:50SPEAKER_01: And he was a he had the choice of he was basically a warlord.
- 21:54SPEAKER_01: Catholic Japanese samurai who was given the choice either you abandon your Catholic family.
- 22:00SPEAKER_01: Or you, if you don't, we're kicking you out of Japan.
- 22:03SPEAKER_01: And he had to leave with his whole household and everything.
- 22:05SPEAKER_01: So it's a beautiful documentary shot in Japan.
- 22:09SPEAKER_01: And um our animation team did all the animated sequences for like showing his life, and it's it's really cool.
- 22:15SPEAKER_01: EWTM's doing that.
- 22:16SPEAKER_01: Um look at you.
- 22:18SPEAKER_01: There's birthday good stuff.
- 22:20SPEAKER_01: That one's Sean.
- 22:21SPEAKER_01: Sean's the artistic visionary there, but yeah, that's yeah.
- 22:24SPEAKER_02: Gary, that's incredible though.
- 22:26SPEAKER_02: That's amazing.
- 22:26SPEAKER_02: So what's on, I mean, I know that you're birthing this right now, so it's probably hard to think of what's next, but are you going to stay with the Catholic?
- 22:35SPEAKER_02: I mean, like, is does Coronation only stay with Catholic storytelling?
- 22:39SPEAKER_01: Actually, Coronation, we we work with a lot of secular groups as well.
- 22:42SPEAKER_01: You do?
- 22:43SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 22:43SPEAKER_01: So it we've never been like we've never been like completely siloed.
- 22:46SPEAKER_01: I think because of our founding and because of what Bill and Jen and I cared about, like it we have tended to work with a lot of Catholic organizations, but I've like, I think it's like a lot of a lot of Catholic media, they'll sort of like bifurcate or they'll like sort of say, Oh, we just serve Catholic groups.
- 23:02SPEAKER_01: So we've we've been, you know, we'll work with a lot of with anybody.
- 23:05SPEAKER_02: So what is next?
- 23:06SPEAKER_02: Is there any like any drops that you can give the the Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 23:11SPEAKER_01: So we have two really fun projects we're working on is um our animation team is working on the Tiny Saints show.
- 23:17SPEAKER_01: Oh, you know Tiny Saints.
- 23:19SPEAKER_01: Yes, that's really fun, and we're working on that.
- 23:21SPEAKER_01: I didn't know that was you guys, it's us as well, and then um the Firebreaker series, which was a podcast series we did on uh St.
- 23:27SPEAKER_01: George and the Dragon.
- 23:29SPEAKER_01: Um, and it's a really novel way of doing it.
- 23:31SPEAKER_01: We did the podcast with David Henry, he stars as St.
- 23:34SPEAKER_01: George and Elizabeth Tabish from The Chosen.
- 23:37SPEAKER_01: Um and so that that's being adapted into a like a graphic novelization with votive uh word on fires, like kids imprint, and we're hoping to do an animated show of that.
- 23:48SPEAKER_01: So yeah, we got a lot.
- 23:50SPEAKER_01: We're doing a documentary.
- 23:51SPEAKER_01: Our director Christian Originez is doing a featured documentary on Filipino food culture, and so we got we got a whole bunch of that's incredible.
- 23:59SPEAKER_01: So I'm not well rested.
- 24:00SPEAKER_02: I have slept at this conference, but it has been a heck of a two years, and I've it has been a lot's been going on, which is good because it kind of like I don't know about you, but when you're in the middle of work, do you ever just have a moment of doubt?
- 24:15SPEAKER_02: Like, do you ever have self-doubt or just wonder, like, am I making this up?
- 24:18SPEAKER_02: Where's God asking me to do all this?
- 24:20SPEAKER_02: Or is it always really clear for you?
- 24:22SPEAKER_02: Like, do you have a clear path that this is God's voice and He is guiding you?
- 24:28SPEAKER_01: Um, okay, so like to be real, it was like two years ago.
- 24:33SPEAKER_01: Um we had sort of built this company within 14 years now, and I had this sort of like knockout prayer session where big God was basically just like, This is my company, you but you've never given it to me.
- 24:47SPEAKER_01: And I and I was like, and I realized that like I had a bit of like a bad attachment to my work and thinking that maybe it was serving my ego, or maybe it was like I needed it for some sense of fulfillment or something, I don't know.
- 25:00SPEAKER_01: But I had like he was basically like, Yeah, it's mine now.
- 25:03SPEAKER_01: Um I think the I'm the captain now meme comes to mind, and and it really was just like okay, like, all right.
- 25:12SPEAKER_01: Okay, and so yeah, so like and maybe that is like a bit of like why I'm reticent to say like I'm a filmmaker is because like I don't need to be perceived as anything necessarily, and that might be like really stupid to say or make me look like a fool.
- 25:25SPEAKER_01: No, I don't think so.
- 25:26SPEAKER_01: I don't think so.
- 25:27SPEAKER_01: I really I have no idea what God wants, but uh mother EWTN, Mother Angelica was basically like if you want to know the will of God, just like do something.
- 25:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and so we've just been doing a lot of things and hopefully God likes it.
- 25:38unknown: I don't know.
- 25:40SPEAKER_01: It sounds like he does.
- 25:41SPEAKER_01: That's what I'm saying.
- 25:42SPEAKER_02: It sounds like as it keeps coming, it's his way of saying, like, this is what I this is what I'm asking you to do when you're doing it.
- 25:47SPEAKER_02: I I hope so.
- 25:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 25:48SPEAKER_02: So how do you keep your faith life?
- 25:50SPEAKER_02: Like, is there anything specific that you do, especially when you're when you are in the middle of a job?
- 25:55SPEAKER_02: Yeah, do you have any type of routine that you're always going back to, or do you have like something that you fall on, or a saint that you're like, that's my guy, that's my gal?
- 26:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's interesting.
- 26:04SPEAKER_01: So I think like saints come to me in seasons.
- 26:06SPEAKER_01: Blessed Stanley has obviously been one like present like the whole time, and there wasn't like a single take that we were doing that I wasn't praying to him, like on every single take, just to like say, like, because you feel so entrusted to tell this guy's story.
- 26:20SPEAKER_01: Um, but I say like Joseph the worker is probably like the guy because if I just shut up and work, yeah, my hope is like God's will will be done.
- 26:29SPEAKER_01: And so like Joseph the worker is probably like he's one who I pray to a lot.
- 26:33SPEAKER_02: I love that.
- 26:33SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 26:34SPEAKER_02: And so what is your advice for men who are working, trying to have the family life, trying to have the five kids, having a newborn?
- 26:43SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 26:44SPEAKER_02: What how do you keep like tethered to your vocation, which is being a husband and a father?
- 26:51SPEAKER_02: You know, how do you do that?
- 26:53SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 26:53SPEAKER_01: I don't know if I have like really, really good advice, but I would say like nothing, nothing that we're doing matters other than your family, like and your primary vocation.
- 27:04SPEAKER_01: So I very much think about any like filmmaking, I'm lucky to be a storyteller for a living.
- 27:09SPEAKER_01: It's like my kids think it's just totally normal that like I'm always making new stories and they want to be cast in things and they want to do stuff.
- 27:16SPEAKER_01: But like I think like it just doesn't, it doesn't matter.
- 27:18SPEAKER_01: Like I could, um, and and if you let any of your work become an idol, that's a very, very bad thing.
- 27:24SPEAKER_01: And I have been guilty of that at times.
- 27:26SPEAKER_01: Like I've certainly been guilty of that.
- 27:28SPEAKER_01: But I think like just calling to mind like your primary vocation uh is to be there for them and to help them grow.
- 27:35SPEAKER_01: And I'm at varying degrees good or bad at that at any given time.
- 27:38SPEAKER_02: Well, we all are, yeah.
- 27:39SPEAKER_02: I mean, it's a constant.
- 27:40SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 27:41SPEAKER_02: I keep thinking when my kids uh turn 40, will I know that it all worked out?
- 27:45SPEAKER_02: Or like when do you know as a parent, like, well, these were good choices, or these were not the one?
- 27:50SPEAKER_02: I don't I don't know.
- 27:51SPEAKER_02: I don't have the answer for that.
- 27:52SPEAKER_01: My kids would say not good choices.
- 27:55SPEAKER_01: They'd say movies are stupid, it means you're in Guatemala for a month.
- 27:59SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 27:59SPEAKER_02: I mean, is that hard?
- 28:00SPEAKER_02: The travel with the family.
- 28:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that was very difficult.
- 28:04SPEAKER_01: And that was something that was like, that was something that like I wish that we could have like had my whole family down there, but my wife was pregnant at the time and it was just like and she has difficult pregnancies, and so that was like it was just like clearly it wasn't gonna like work.
- 28:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 28:17SPEAKER_01: Um, but yeah, that that was a difficult thing.
- 28:19SPEAKER_01: So like definitely hoping and praying that like the next movie God wants us to like do is like in Pennsylvania.
- 28:25SPEAKER_01: It's local, yeah.
- 28:27SPEAKER_02: But no It's about Lincoln and the Gettysburg address.
- 28:30SPEAKER_02: That's all I know about Gettysburg.
- 28:31SPEAKER_02: I have no idea.
- 28:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's the that that is.
- 28:33SPEAKER_00: Is that it?
- 28:34SPEAKER_00: Did I nail it?
- 28:35SPEAKER_00: Basically that, yeah.
- 28:37SPEAKER_02: That's all.
- 28:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's it.
- 28:38SPEAKER_02: That's all I know.
- 28:39SPEAKER_02: Um, no, I you know what, that kind of segues into my my last question for you, which is whenever I have anybody in the living room, I want them to know that this isn't just a it is about conversation, it's about having real human conversation and being legit with each other and being real about it.
- 28:58SPEAKER_02: But also it's, you know what, we've gone through a lot as people with COVID, with you know, everything that we're seeing on social media and how we don't have sit-down conversations anymore.
- 29:10SPEAKER_02: We're not together.
- 29:11SPEAKER_02: And one of the most beautiful things that we have as, you know, Catholics, and not just Catholics, it doesn't just belong to us, but we really have this deep understanding of prayer and how we can truly support each other even when we're not with each other.
- 29:26SPEAKER_02: So my last question is always how can this audience pray for you?
- 29:31SPEAKER_02: What is something that we can do and to support you in prayer?
- 29:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think so.
- 29:35SPEAKER_01: Like our our little our little thing, coronation, is like it's really grown and now there's a lot of people.
- 29:41SPEAKER_01: We have like 18, 18 people on staff.
- 29:44SPEAKER_01: Our mission is to crown the good through inspiring and uh and uh and entertaining storytelling.
- 29:51SPEAKER_01: And so, like the thing is like I have so many good, wonderful, talented, creative people who want to tell these beautiful stories.
- 29:58SPEAKER_01: So pray for the little community in Gettysburg that we're building that we like we stay on target and we always think about what's good, true, and beautiful.
- 30:06SPEAKER_01: Um, and that like yeah, and like yeah, no egos are allowed in Gettysburg.
- 30:10SPEAKER_01: Pray for all of our stupid egos.
- 30:12SPEAKER_01: I think that would be good.
- 30:13SPEAKER_01: Because I think art like ego is the death of art.
- 30:15SPEAKER_01: Like I think I think I think a hundred percent ego is the death of art because if your head is so big that like you can't, you know, like hear, be inspired by you know what's around you, if you're always looking in the mirror and not outside the window, that's like you just can't tell good stories.
- 30:32SPEAKER_02: I love that.
- 30:32SPEAKER_02: I think that's a great way to end.
- 30:34SPEAKER_02: Ego is the death of art.
- 30:35SPEAKER_02: Yep.
- 30:36SPEAKER_02: Is that what you said?
- 30:36SPEAKER_02: Did you make that up?
- 30:37SPEAKER_02: Can I just say it was you?
- 30:38SPEAKER_01: Sure.
- 30:39SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 30:39SPEAKER_02: It was Lincoln in getting in the Gettysburg Address.
- 30:44SPEAKER_01: He said ego is the death of art.
- 30:46SPEAKER_01: And that was the second birth of freedom for the United States.
- 30:50SPEAKER_02: And this guy, Gary Gauz, not gasty.
- 30:53SPEAKER_02: Like the bandage.
