- 0:27Hey everybody, good morning. From the chicken coop
- 0:30perfectionism. Do you consider yourself a
- 0:32perfectionist? I used to consider myself a
- 0:35perfectionist when I was younger.
- 0:38A lot. I'm used to say, Oh no, it's got
- 0:40to be perfect. And I never understood the
- 0:42concept of looking at it and saying, well, how do you define
- 0:45perfect? What is perfect?
- 0:47What does that look like? Because, listen, everybody's
- 0:51version of it is different. My version of a perfect chicken
- 0:53coop is far different than some people's.
- 0:55Some people's it's, you know, just a little tiny cage and
- 0:59they're in there and they're good and they're like, oh, it's
- 1:00perfect. They're safe from predators.
- 1:02And me, it's more like, OK, not only do I want them to be safe,
- 1:06but I want them to be happy and I want them to have this vast
- 1:12area. I want it to be clean.
- 1:13I can give you an entire list of how well I thought this out, but
- 1:17it was all based around and the fact that OK, I just want to
- 1:21create something that's in unbelievable.
- 1:24And that to me is always like hitting the level of
- 1:26perfectionism. When I was a kid, I used to get
- 1:30assignments in school and we would have to handwrite them a
- 1:34certain way. And the teacher that taught us
- 1:37writing in second grade was just unbelievable.
- 1:40Mrs. Walker and she wrote the most.
- 1:43She had the most beautiful handwriting and she taught us
- 1:46all to write that. Pretty much every girl in the
- 1:48class had the same handwriting because we would mimic over and
- 1:52over and over what she did and she would say, OK, it's got to
- 1:55be perfect. And she didn't do it in a bad
- 1:57way, it was just her way of doing it.
- 1:58Like you don't think about those things when you give them to
- 2:00child's a child's mind and say, OK, here you go, this is how
- 2:04we're going to introduce perfectionism to you.
- 2:06But for me, it was just something that I dove into
- 2:11first. It started with handwriting.
- 2:13I would write and rewrite, write and rewrite everything that I
- 2:16possibly could because I wanted to make sure that it was done
- 2:19just the correct way, just perfect.
- 2:23But it just slowed me down and it held back a lot of my
- 2:26creativity because I didn't want to make things too long to
- 2:29write. I can remember sitting and
- 2:32writing a story and saying I could have this whole section,
- 2:35but I don't want to sit there and have to rewrite it or right
- 2:39in this whole thing because the penmanship had to be perfect.
- 2:42Now it's a silly, silly example, but the truth is, where does
- 2:46that show up in your life? Where does it still show up in
- 2:48my life? There was so many ways that we
- 2:51get stuck in this, and this is the point of today is not just
- 2:57to rail on perfectionism. The point is, what does it rob
- 3:00you of? And it robs you of creativity.
- 3:03It takes away your ability to start to think differently, to
- 3:08see differently, to act differently, to be creative,
- 3:11because you get stuck in the paradigm of perfectionism.
- 3:15And then all of a sudden there's no room for creativity,
- 3:19creativity in it, because creativity can be messy.
- 3:21It can be unorganized. It can say, ah, well, you know,
- 3:25I'm at when I'm starting something.
- 3:27It all seems great in the beginning, and then it looks
- 3:29like this big BLOB of a mess, and then all of a sudden it
- 3:32comes together at the end. But when perfectionism is
- 3:35present, that big BLOB in the middle is yucky.
- 3:39It feels just one simple word, yucky.
- 3:43And this is not just for projects or things that you're
- 3:48building in your world, but it's also your world itself.
- 3:52So if you're going through a huge transition right now and it
- 3:55seems like you're questioning yourself about, did I make the
- 3:58right decisions? Did I do all of what I was
- 4:01supposed to do? I should be somewhere else at
- 4:04this point in my life. If you start that, you often
- 4:07have to look back and say, OK, am I in a perfectionism frame
- 4:12that says this is how it should have been done?
- 4:14Because our certainty girls get triggered.
- 4:17Even Raven agrees with that one. Our certainty girls get
- 4:19triggered and all of a sudden you're working in a way that's
- 4:23robbing you of creativity, robbing you of possibility,
- 4:26robbing you of everything, and it's perfectionism kicking in.
- 4:31This is how it should not be and and you start to see like, well,
- 4:35if it was in a perfect world, when you start those sentence is
- 4:39off. That way you know what's driving
- 4:41you know what's happening. So I'm going to challenge you to
- 4:44really identify that piece of it.
- 4:46Look at it. How much is your perfectionism
- 4:50stealing your creativity from allowing you to be able to make
- 4:53whatever it is that you want to make out in the world?
- 4:56Nothing is more important, my friends.
- 4:58Not one thing is more important than dwelling in creativity.
- 5:02It is the IT is a it is a superpower.
- 5:05It is a resource that you cannot do without and should not do
- 5:08without. And the more you hunker down in
- 5:11this place of not understanding that, the more likely you are to
- 5:17suffer from it because it's everywhere.
- 5:20It's all around us. So go take a look at it and put
- 5:23it in a box because not the best tool to be using.
- 5:28OK, everybody, have a blessed day and I will see you tomorrow.
- 5:32Bye.
