- 0:01Speaker 1: This episode is brought to you by P and C Bank.
- 0:03Speaker 1: A lot of people think podcasts about work are boring,
- 0:06Speaker 1: and sure they definitely can be, but understanding a professionals
- 0:10Speaker 1: routine shows us how they achieve their success little by little,
- 0:14Speaker 1: day after day. It's like banking with P and C Bank.
- 0:18Speaker 1: It might seem boring to save, plan and make calculated
- 0:21Speaker 1: decisions with your bank, but keeping your money boring is
- 0:24Speaker 1: what helps you live a more happily fulfilled life. P
- 0:27Speaker 1: and C Bank Brilliantly Boring since eighteen sixty five. Brilliantly
- 0:32Speaker 1: Boring since eighteen sixty five is a service mark of
- 0:35Speaker 1: the PNC Financial Service Group, Inc. P and C Bank
- 0:39Speaker 1: National Association Member FDIC says, your husband was up at
- 0:44Speaker 1: three in the morning watching NBA. I'm gonna tell you
- 0:46Speaker 1: something that was me last night. It'll probably be meet tonight.
- 0:51Speaker 1: New York is playing tonight. But it got me to
- 0:54Speaker 1: thinking about METEA rites and revenue streams and so for
- 0:57Speaker 1: the DL, is there a next flaire? Is it a
- 1:05Speaker 1: traditional model where it's it's media rights, it's merchandising, it's tourism.
- 1:11Speaker 1: How is it structured here and what's the plan for scalability.
- 1:14Speaker 2: For that, thank you. So mainly four ways that leagues
- 1:19Speaker 2: like ours can monetize and I think the more common
- 1:22Speaker 2: one for African for our league is sponsorship and marketing
- 1:25Speaker 2: partnerships and that's where you see some of the partnerships.
- 1:28Speaker 2: We have your service now visit round the Africa Zimbak
- 1:32Speaker 2: and run there. So yes, sponsorship and marketing rights and
- 1:36Speaker 2: using our platform that we give to market products and services.
- 1:41Speaker 2: We have overall NBAS over one billion funds. Within Africa
- 1:46Speaker 2: we have millions. We have one point two you know
- 1:49Speaker 2: impression billion impressions in the last season. And when you
- 1:52Speaker 2: look at our social media platforms, we have a big
- 1:54Speaker 2: breach so that rich allows you know, partners like ours
- 1:57Speaker 2: to really access the funds that we have and that
- 2:00Speaker 2: that's how we monitorze one way. The other one is
- 2:03Speaker 2: merchandise and good news is that we just opened an
- 2:07Speaker 2: e commas bottom it's called Balstore dot NBA dot com
- 2:11Speaker 2: where you can buy merchandise from anywhere using our ECMMAS platform.
- 2:16Speaker 2: Now we know that the market, not just in Africa,
- 2:19Speaker 2: but also especially the African diaspora all over the world
- 2:22Speaker 2: has been looking to own something with bl whenever they
- 2:25Speaker 2: interact with it. We saw pictures last year of season
- 2:28Speaker 2: four with a family in Brazil walking around with BA
- 2:31Speaker 2: L and we wondered where they got the BL merchandise.
- 2:35Speaker 2: You know, we've seen pictures in Histrow where people crossing
- 2:38Speaker 2: security and they're wearing BA L and those anecdotes showed
- 2:41Speaker 2: us that there's really appetite for consuming BL beyond the
- 2:44Speaker 2: African market, but also with especially African diaspora all over
- 2:48Speaker 2: the world, who are really big. In fact, one of
- 2:50Speaker 2: the statistics that you know, a colleago man shared with
- 2:53Speaker 2: me is, you know, if you take out China and India,
- 2:55Speaker 2: the African despera is the third country in terms of
- 2:57Speaker 2: population globally. So interacting with that market as part of
- 3:01Speaker 2: what we have to offer as BL continues to be
- 3:03Speaker 2: important for us. The third one is ticketing. You know,
- 3:06Speaker 2: when you come to watch games, Every year we see
- 3:08Speaker 2: ticketing revenues go up because more and more funds are
- 3:11Speaker 2: coming to watch your games and paying to watch your games,
- 3:13Speaker 2: and that has been really important as well. Now the
- 3:16Speaker 2: media market obviously as well, is a big part of
- 3:19Speaker 2: sports leagues. It's a growing aspect in Africa, whether it's PATV,
- 3:23Speaker 2: it's still very limited in terms of the coverage free
- 3:27Speaker 2: to air. Many of the free to air broadcasters are
- 3:30Speaker 2: national and therefore kind of free access in the countries
- 3:33Speaker 2: where they serve. But we see that changing, and I
- 3:36Speaker 2: think one when you say what does the future look like,
- 3:39Speaker 2: one of the areas we see the future, you know changing,
- 3:42Speaker 2: is very much around what the w All talked about,
- 3:45Speaker 2: which is integrating markets in Africa. I think the more
- 3:48Speaker 2: integrated markets are, the more integrated services are, The more
- 3:52Speaker 2: integrated we can be, the more you can actually use
- 3:55Speaker 2: platforms to you know, provide whether it's streaming or broadcasting
- 3:59Speaker 2: to markets across the continent. Now people like to say
- 4:02Speaker 2: we need to integrate Africa more, and we really need to.
- 4:05Speaker 2: We've talked about the African continent a free trade area.
- 4:07Speaker 2: It's a big aspiration to really break down all this
- 4:10Speaker 2: barrier so we can trade as one market. But a
- 4:12Speaker 2: lot has to be done for that to happen, and
- 4:14Speaker 2: I think we all touched on a couple of those.
- 4:16Speaker 2: How do you adjust a business in Randa and be
- 4:18Speaker 2: able to give your services across the fifty four countries
- 4:20Speaker 2: that's not happening yet today. How do you get a
- 4:23Speaker 2: license to broadcasts in one country and broadcast in many countries,
- 4:27Speaker 2: so you can actually access a much bigger market on
- 4:29Speaker 2: the continent. Those kinds of things need to be solved
- 4:32Speaker 2: so that we can actually provide services across the continent.
- 4:35Speaker 2: The good news, I think, especially for metea ites, is
- 4:37Speaker 2: what we see in some of what they tell us
- 4:39Speaker 2: are doing. If you give an example of empty and
- 4:42Speaker 2: three hundred million subscribers across the continent, I know that
- 4:45Speaker 2: they're thinking about using that platform that already is connected
- 4:48Speaker 2: by subscription all over the continent to provide contents such
- 4:52Speaker 2: as content that we would be interested in. So I
- 4:54Speaker 2: think that's going to change, and I think we're going
- 4:56Speaker 2: to see more access to media, more media integration, and
- 4:58Speaker 2: media contributing a lot more than missing today. And for me,
- 5:01Speaker 2: the future is bright.
- 5:09Speaker 3: Claire. Just to piggyback on that, you talked about the
- 5:12Speaker 3: challenges as far as only having five arenas in continent
- 5:16Speaker 3: in Africa, and obviously that makes it difficult to expand.
- 5:19Speaker 3: But when you're looking at expanding to either having different
- 5:22Speaker 3: teams or just focus in a different area, what are
- 5:25Speaker 3: some of the top areas on the continent that you
- 5:28Speaker 3: guys have on your board as far as you want to,
- 5:31Speaker 3: you know, have more expansion in.
- 5:34Speaker 2: Well, we would like to be in all the countries
- 5:36Speaker 2: in Africa if we could. But today we're playing four countries,
- 5:40Speaker 2: but we have twelve teams that play. So ideally in
- 5:43Speaker 2: those twelve, you know, those twelve teams should be representing
- 5:46Speaker 2: countries that we have that there's interest in playing in
- 5:50Speaker 2: playing in. But beyond the twelve, even before we get
- 5:53Speaker 2: the qualifiers for the twelve, we have the broad to
- 5:56Speaker 2: be a lot more countries actually participate. So actually countries
- 5:59Speaker 2: are participating in the wider community that BL brings together
- 6:03Speaker 2: is more than you know, four countries at horses, more
- 6:05Speaker 2: than twelve teams at play. It's a lot more, you know,
- 6:07Speaker 2: if you come from the qualification road to BL until
- 6:10Speaker 2: the final competitions. And so our goal is to work
- 6:13Speaker 2: with as many countries as possible that wish to be
- 6:17Speaker 2: part of this story, and they're there every day we
- 6:19Speaker 2: get as I said, you know, I know Nigeria is
- 6:21Speaker 2: building an arena. Benin is building an arena. You know,
- 6:24Speaker 2: we went Morocco for the first time after Egypt. You know,
- 6:27Speaker 2: we are going South Africa. The many countries Kenya, for example,
- 6:30Speaker 2: we have an office in Kenya and then Aerobicity Thunders came,
- 6:34Speaker 2: you know, for the first time representing Kenya in the
- 6:36Speaker 2: BL and so you can Uganda had a team City
- 6:40Speaker 2: Oilers that has been coming for the last seasons. So
- 6:42Speaker 2: there's potential in a lot more countries. I think the
- 6:44Speaker 2: question is how do we work with investors, how do
- 6:47Speaker 2: we work with the governments to put in place that
- 6:49Speaker 2: environment of infrastructure that could allow this to happen. The
- 6:53Speaker 2: good news is that every year, as we grow and
- 6:56Speaker 2: we see the impact of b AL, we get more interests,
- 6:58Speaker 2: including from development financial institutions like a Frigzen Bank, a FDBM.
- 7:04Speaker 2: We've seen investors come to us and say what does
- 7:06Speaker 2: it take to build an arena? Who do we build
- 7:09Speaker 2: an arena for? And I think that's going to change.
- 7:11Speaker 2: I really think that over the next five years you're
- 7:13Speaker 2: going to see a lot more standardized arenas than you've
- 7:17Speaker 2: seen today, and that's going to allow us to plan
- 7:18Speaker 2: as many countries as we could. Our goal is to
- 7:21Speaker 2: have many countries come to be part of the BAL experience.
- 7:25Speaker 1: Ernest, what's up? You ever walk into a small business
