- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome to my sports show with me Adi Dawks in
- 0:04Speaker 1: the studio today. Well you've got Pete, Candy and Steve
- 0:07Speaker 1: Rich from the folks in the Victor Walking team. Good morning guys,
- 0:11Speaker 1: morning take two. Yeah, keV, keV, just give me a
- 0:17Speaker 1: quick little bell and let me know that nothing was
- 0:19Speaker 1: coming through. Well, guys, welcome to the show. Tell us
- 0:24Speaker 1: a little bit, a little bit what you're up to.
- 0:27Speaker 2: Well, last Thursday we launched the first walking football session
- 0:32Speaker 2: yep for over fifties. We had a good turnout in
- 0:36Speaker 2: cold conditions. Pete and myself are there and.
- 0:40Speaker 3: I was the only one wearing shorts. Yeah, not a
- 0:45Speaker 3: good sight though.
- 0:47Speaker 2: We were joined by eleven others, which was a good
- 0:49Speaker 2: start for the first in Victor Wolf.
- 0:52Speaker 4: And football session. That's good, that's great. I mean.
- 0:58Speaker 1: When you say for walking football, obviously there's some people
- 1:01Speaker 1: that haven't got a clue what that would be. Is
- 1:03Speaker 1: it literally just playing football walking? Yes, you're not allowed
- 1:08Speaker 1: to run up I assume yes. And it's a non
- 1:11Speaker 1: contact sport okay, the balls not allowed overhead height a
- 1:15Speaker 1: bit like it's been Premier League then no contact yeah,
- 1:22Speaker 1: I mean Oka was speaking to Pete earlier on and
- 1:25Speaker 1: he was saying that he was involved with a team before.
- 1:29Speaker 4: Was that Folks and Wanderers? Was it or something that
- 1:31Speaker 4: was that was.
- 1:31Speaker 3: Steve's Oh, I was invited along. Basically what happened when
- 1:37Speaker 3: when Adrid AFC Newington finished I was I had quite
- 1:42Speaker 3: a long break away from playing, and during which time
- 1:47Speaker 3: I got married and had a couple of kids, and
- 1:49Speaker 3: then his father's football league came up. This is like
- 1:52Speaker 3: a a primary school dad's thing on a Saturday morning.
- 1:56Speaker 3: So I played in that for Saint Mary's for a
- 1:58Speaker 3: couple of three years, and then the kids got older
- 2:02Speaker 3: and went to secondary and I couldn't anymore. So it
- 2:05Speaker 3: was around that time I got invited to play walking football.
- 2:08Speaker 3: So I went along to Sports Center one Thursday night
- 2:11Speaker 3: met Steve, really enjoyed it, really got into it in
- 2:13Speaker 3: a big way, and Folks and Wanderers were We're born.
- 2:18Speaker 4: What happened to Folks the Wondrous in the end?
- 2:21Speaker 3: I think the numbers just declined and and then the
- 2:23Speaker 3: sport obviously the sports and the.
- 2:24Speaker 1: Clothes, Yeah, that obviously didn't help, did it. The Sports
- 2:28Speaker 1: Center hopefully that'll be open again soon and be able
- 2:34Speaker 1: to remember the good old days. Five a side down
- 2:36Speaker 1: there on a Thursday night. That's fights down there.
- 2:40Speaker 3: I'll tell you.
- 2:42Speaker 1: I think that's where I got me two dodgy knees
- 2:43Speaker 1: from and he broken fingers, et cetera. But yeah, yeah,
- 2:48Speaker 1: so you're you're on the Thursday night and whereabouts do
- 2:52Speaker 1: you you know you do the walkie football.
- 2:55Speaker 3: Yeah, we're at the Three Hills on the free g.
- 3:00Speaker 1: Thursday evening, Thursday evening, okay, and anyone's welcome to come
- 3:04Speaker 1: down there. Male or female.
- 3:08Speaker 3: Women's walking football is being in the take off in
- 3:10Speaker 3: a big way now, so you know we're welcome. I
- 3:14Speaker 3: would like to get women's team as well.
- 3:16Speaker 1: Okay, and hopefully you're I mean, obviously you've only just started,
- 3:20Speaker 1: so you've not joined any leagues yet, but hopefully you
- 3:23Speaker 1: want to join the league and.
- 3:25Speaker 3: Want to get back in the cent League. Obviously we
- 3:27Speaker 3: want to get the strongest team as possible and compete
- 3:30Speaker 3: in the cent League again.
- 3:31Speaker 1: Okay, we'll still the first tune or the second tune
- 3:35Speaker 1: iss by now and then we talked to the guys
- 3:38Speaker 1: maybe a little bit about their past football in history
- 3:44Speaker 1: that could be interested. Okay for the second song up
- 3:49Speaker 1: the load of the morning. This is the Jam and
- 3:53Speaker 1: that's entertainment. There you go, Paul Weller and the Jam
- 4:08Speaker 1: from nineteen eighty one. That's entertainment. Okay, I'm back with
- 4:13Speaker 1: the guys here in the studio. And as you're a
- 4:17Speaker 1: new team in that will you be looking, Oh, do
- 4:19Speaker 1: you have any sponsors at the moment or are you
- 4:21Speaker 1: looking for sponsorship or of Folks in Victor, how have
- 4:25Speaker 1: they helped you.
- 4:27Speaker 2: Initially getting the project off the ground because it's such
- 4:33Speaker 2: you know, it's in its infancy at the moment, we
- 4:36Speaker 2: will be looking for sponsors, probably through in Victor.
- 4:40Speaker 1: Okay, and did you have a website or a Facebook
- 4:43Speaker 1: page or anything like that social media pages where people
- 4:45Speaker 1: could get in contact with you easier.
- 4:48Speaker 2: We'll have a section on the club website Folks in
- 4:52Speaker 2: Victor website. Yeah, facebook page, got a WhatsApp group, it's
- 4:56Speaker 2: all in hand, it's all in hash that's good you.
- 5:01Speaker 1: Obviously you've only had one training session this week and
- 5:05Speaker 1: hopefully this going out today that you may get a
- 5:08Speaker 1: few more on Thursday.
- 5:09Speaker 4: And everybody's welcome, so.
- 5:13Speaker 1: Obviously we want you to do well with the Folks
- 5:16Speaker 1: in Victor Ladies football team taking off. We had the
- 5:19Speaker 1: girls in here at the studio a few weeks ago
- 5:23Speaker 1: and their results have been absolutely fantastic. I mean late
- 5:29Speaker 1: next year, I know, folks and in Victor are hoping
- 5:31Speaker 1: to put the plastic pitch down.
- 5:32Speaker 4: Will you be actually playing on that one?
- 5:35Speaker 3: Yeah? Well, we using it for training on Thursdays.
- 5:38Speaker 1: Okay, okay, and what about obviously match days for you
- 5:41Speaker 1: what you were arranged friend listen to you enter a
- 5:43Speaker 1: league or something like that.
- 5:45Speaker 2: Yes, we're looking at about September when the league starts
- 5:48Speaker 2: up for the following season, okay, halfway through it at
- 5:51Speaker 2: the moment, and that will coincide with the plastic pitch
- 5:55Speaker 2: being put down at the in Victor grounds, so we
- 5:57Speaker 2: can the whole academy set that. We'll move from where
- 6:01Speaker 2: they're renting out three Hills to the Victor Alkaline Stadium,
- 6:06Speaker 2: which is great.
- 6:07Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean obviously with a three G pitch that
- 6:10Speaker 1: they'll have there to be able to incorporate yourself walking football,
- 6:15Speaker 1: the ladies football, the academy, the under eighteens and obviously
- 6:19Speaker 1: the first team as well.
- 6:20Speaker 3: And I think Gary's disability square to use it as well.
- 6:24Speaker 4: That's brilliant as well.
- 6:25Speaker 1: I mean the other week they played Chelsea and you
- 6:28Speaker 1: know that's I know it's a disability team, but you
- 6:31Speaker 1: know name Chelsea. Obviously we'll bring people in and that's
- 6:35Speaker 1: this is exactly what we want over at the football club.
- 6:37Speaker 1: I know where this sport show is quite heavily football
- 6:40Speaker 1: well orientated. But if there's anybody out there that would
- 6:43Speaker 1: like to come in up with a different sport, then
- 6:45Speaker 1: obviously you're more than welcome to drop me a line
- 6:48Speaker 1: and we'll see if we can can't get you on
- 6:50Speaker 1: the show. We're going to play one more another one song,
- 6:53Speaker 1: and then we'll come back to the guys and we'll
- 6:56Speaker 1: listen for their hopes and what they hope to achieve
- 7:00Speaker 1: in the next I don't know, eighteen months or so,
- 7:03Speaker 1: or maybe even longer the next one. This one story
- 7:08Speaker 1: about this one. This one's called Sun and the Rainbow,
- 7:10Speaker 1: Madness and madness of just an issue that they will
- 7:13Speaker 1: be coming back to Margate next summer, so I'm definitely
- 7:19Speaker 1: gonna get a ticket for that one. And I saw
- 7:21Speaker 1: them last year at Margate and it was pretty good.
- 7:23Speaker 1: But this one, Sun and the Rainbow Madness, hopefully we'll
- 7:27Speaker 1: get more sun than rain.
- 7:29Speaker 2: The sound of Folkston Radio Folkston.
- 7:46Speaker 1: There you go, Sons of madness on radio Folks done
- 7:49Speaker 1: one oh five point nine FM. I'm joined in the
- 7:52Speaker 1: studio by Pete Candy and Andy Rich and sorry Steve Rich.
- 7:58Speaker 1: I don't know why I keep you saying you must
- 8:00Speaker 1: lock at antie Steve. Yeah, tell us how you're aid
- 8:05Speaker 1: to walking football in guys and a bit of a
- 8:08Speaker 1: bit of a history.
- 8:09Speaker 2: Okay, Well, I used to play Sunday League Football four
- 8:15Speaker 2: He's Kent Breakers, Lace in Cantary, Herne Bay and Whitstable League.
- 8:20Speaker 1: Oh okay, I were high for Folks than Sunday Morning League,
- 8:23Speaker 1: which we were.
- 8:24Speaker 2: I think it was pretty low down in the division status.
- 8:28Speaker 4: Yeah, I know the feeling.
- 8:30Speaker 2: And I used to used to play golf. After the accident,
- 8:35Speaker 2: I got it by a car and that was the
- 8:37Speaker 2: end of my football career, so to speak. So I
- 8:40Speaker 2: spent twenty years walking around the field being angry. I
- 8:44Speaker 2: heard about walking football in twenty fourteen. As soon as
- 8:49Speaker 2: I heard it, it was one of those light bulb moments
- 8:51Speaker 2: where I thought I can play this game because I
- 8:54Speaker 2: don't have to run, ye, no twisting, turning, and with
- 8:57Speaker 2: non contact status be not prone to injuries. So I
- 9:03Speaker 2: was away. I thought, I got to start a club
- 9:05Speaker 2: up because I want.
- 9:06Speaker 3: To play it.
- 9:07Speaker 2: I'm sure other people in similar situations injuries, senior age,
- 9:12Speaker 2: they'd want to start playing football again. So I within
- 9:15Speaker 2: two months I did. The folks and wanderers at the
- 9:18Speaker 2: sports center looked around for people to play, and there
- 9:22Speaker 2: were no other team in Kent, so we were the
- 9:25Speaker 2: first looked around. Others Surrey just wanted other people to play,
- 9:31Speaker 2: so there was a couple of teams in Surrey, Hampshire.
- 9:35Speaker 2: I thought I better write this down get some matches going.
- 9:38Speaker 2: Then it got bigger and bigger the further I went
- 9:41Speaker 2: away from Folkston, so I thought I need a website.
- 9:45Speaker 2: So I had a directory of clubs and formed the
- 9:47Speaker 2: first Walking Football Bespoke specific website for the game. It
- 9:54Speaker 2: was back in twenty fourteen, so I thought, why not
- 9:58Speaker 2: put it out there a bit further, so I I
- 10:00Speaker 2: devised the national tournament in twenty fourteen. Eighteen teams up
- 10:04Speaker 2: and down the country came along. I devised a set
- 10:08Speaker 2: of rules for that because there weren't any out there.
- 10:10Speaker 2: The game had only been a devised a couple of
- 10:13Speaker 2: years before that in Chesterfield, so I looked at the
- 10:18Speaker 2: Fay's Small Side of walking, small sided rules for football
- 10:22Speaker 2: and adapted those four senior citizens, bringing in the non contact,
- 10:28Speaker 2: no running, and it was low impact tackling. Then we've
- 10:32Speaker 2: moved on. We don't have contact anymore and that was
- 10:36Speaker 2: it for me flying. Then we joined we devised the
- 10:42Speaker 2: league for Kent twenty sixteen. I think that was yeah,
- 10:46Speaker 2: And we went on to win that handful of teams
- 10:50Speaker 2: out there and we we I was gonna say we
- 10:53Speaker 2: didn't look back from there, but we did because we
- 10:55Speaker 2: got beaten the following year and that was the end
- 10:57Speaker 2: of our winning streak.
- 11:00Speaker 3: Home Bay took over all next semi pros.
- 11:04Speaker 1: Oh, okay, Ringers shall we say stick the Ringers in?
- 11:11Speaker 4: Okay?
- 11:11Speaker 1: So I mean after that, Yeah, you said, Pete, you've
- 11:16Speaker 1: done some.
- 11:18Speaker 4: TV work for this. Yeah, that's a bit about that.
- 11:22Speaker 3: Yeah. We we got approached to do a program called
- 11:26Speaker 3: fan TVA, which was on Sky channel two hundred and
- 11:30Speaker 3: something and it went out live on a Saturday afternoon. Okay,
- 11:34Speaker 3: there's me. Steve and another went on it and we
- 11:37Speaker 3: talked about walking football and I bought them about focusing
- 11:41Speaker 3: victor and.
- 11:43Speaker 4: Promotion.
- 11:44Speaker 1: It was on for an hour promote the local club
- 11:46Speaker 1: and that's that's good. And you know how did you
- 11:49Speaker 1: get into it then, Pete?
- 11:51Speaker 3: Yeah, well, as I said, I was, I was playing
- 11:54Speaker 3: in this father's football league. And then obviously my kids
- 11:57Speaker 3: got older and went the secondary and it was around
- 11:59Speaker 3: that time I got invited someone who worked for the
- 12:03Speaker 3: Kent FA at the time. He invited me along to
- 12:06Speaker 3: walk in football and I went along one Thursday night,
- 12:09Speaker 3: met Steve and really enjoyed it, really got into it
- 12:13Speaker 3: in a big way, okay. And then we just say
- 12:16Speaker 3: we played for Folks and Wanderers won the Kent League.
- 12:20Speaker 3: We got to the finals at the national tournament and
- 12:24Speaker 3: finished fourth, so we were the fourth best team in
- 12:26Speaker 3: the country. We filmed the Barkley's advert and during which
- 12:33Speaker 3: Steve did a skype chat with Alan Shearer no less,
- 12:36Speaker 3: oh god, oh yes, the mate. For those of you
- 12:42Speaker 3: that know me, he's a Blackburn.
- 12:45Speaker 1: Rovers fan and Alan Shearer to me is God. He's
- 12:49Speaker 1: the man that won us the Scadetto in nineteen ninety
- 12:52Speaker 1: four ninety five. So I've got a little Corinthian figure
- 12:55Speaker 1: on my mental peace with the FA Premier League trophy.
- 12:59Speaker 1: That's that's my my team.
- 13:04Speaker 3: All right.
- 13:04Speaker 2: If I had known that because I had Alan Shearer's
- 13:06Speaker 2: sign shirt from the Barclay's Digital Eagles event.
- 13:11Speaker 1: I could have given it to you, can't you certainly
- 13:13Speaker 1: could you still can If you still got it, I'll
- 13:16Speaker 1: have it.
- 13:17Speaker 2: That went to a Jeordie fan.
- 13:20Speaker 1: Yeah, we won't talk about when they when he left
- 13:23Speaker 1: Blackburn to go to his hometown club, Newcastle United. Okay,
- 13:28Speaker 1: I'm gonna play another tune and we've got other sports
- 13:31Speaker 1: bits and pieces coming up, and we'll have the final
- 13:34Speaker 1: chat with the guys and then we'll do all the
- 13:38Speaker 1: sports roundup from all around Folkston.
- 13:45Speaker 4: This is Golden Brown.
- 13:47Speaker 1: This is by the Stranglers. One of the best tunes
- 13:56Speaker 1: of nineteen eighty two. The Stranglers Golden Brown another band
- 14:01Speaker 1: that are coming to Margate next year. They're we're being
- 14:04Speaker 1: on with the Buzz Coos and the Sex Pistols no
- 14:07Speaker 1: less five quid. Have already got my ticket. I'm definitely
- 14:11Speaker 1: out for that one. I can't wait for that anyway,
- 14:15Speaker 1: We're gonna want to end up wind up now talking
- 14:18Speaker 1: to the boys about the Folks football team. Look for
- 14:24Speaker 1: a bit about the benefits of doing walking football. Steve,
- 14:27Speaker 1: what do you you know? What's your take?
- 14:31Speaker 4: On that all right.
- 14:32Speaker 2: Yes, there's immense benefits to be had from playing walking football.
- 14:36Speaker 2: I mean, if if you walk half an hour a
- 14:39Speaker 2: day is supposed to increase your lifespan by several.
- 14:42Speaker 4: Years, I'm gonna start walking.
- 14:47Speaker 2: But you get great cardiovascular when you're playing walking football.
- 14:50Speaker 2: You're not just walking around. It's it's quite intense, you know, move,
- 14:54Speaker 2: give and goes, all that sort of thing. It's a
- 14:57Speaker 2: good workout. But other benefits physically are increased bone density,
- 15:04Speaker 2: weight loss.
- 15:06Speaker 4: It's definitely better to play it than it.
- 15:08Speaker 2: Improves lessons of chances of having heart disease, the type
- 15:13Speaker 2: two diabetes. So that's just the physical side. The mental
- 15:17Speaker 2: side is it's such a great it's a great format
- 15:24Speaker 2: to meet people. So it's a lot of people living
- 15:27Speaker 2: in social you know, isolation, and they derive great benefits
- 15:33Speaker 2: just getting out off the sofa, doing a bit of exercises,
- 15:35Speaker 2: meeting people. And you get the social benefits from from
- 15:39Speaker 2: walking football as well.
- 15:41Speaker 3: Yeah. So we're both in our sixties and you know
- 15:43Speaker 3: we're both in pretty good shape.
- 15:46Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 15:46Speaker 1: I mean, for those who don't know, pick candy here today.
- 15:51Speaker 1: Year we've known each other, what forty five few years
- 15:55Speaker 1: or so.
- 15:56Speaker 3: Yes, since the glory days of afeenings, I.
- 15:59Speaker 1: Have seen them in and so HI focused on Sunday
- 16:01Speaker 1: Morning League. We went for about what about six seven years,
- 16:05Speaker 1: didn't we. Yeah, we had some good times.
- 16:07Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 16:08Speaker 3: The ASC actually stood for Adrian's Football Club.
- 16:11Speaker 1: Yeah, everyone thought was amate Football Aid Football Club. Yeah,
- 16:19Speaker 1: it was great times. I mean, just like Steve said,
- 16:22Speaker 1: you know, like would be like camaraderie and we were
- 16:28Speaker 1: to pop the crazy again. It was we were, and
- 16:32Speaker 1: I tried to take it as seriously as I could,
- 16:34Speaker 1: and of course nobody else.
- 16:35Speaker 4: Would nobody read it was.
- 16:38Speaker 3: Yeah, it's just as I say, the camar and all
- 16:42Speaker 3: that playing darts for the honest Laura and a Friday
- 16:45Speaker 3: night that was good fun, some legendary nights out which
- 16:49Speaker 3: obviously we can't discuss on the Family Show.
- 16:51Speaker 1: I remember the Christmas party. Barry Barnes, if you're listening,
- 16:56Speaker 1: put that guitar back. Thankfully that restaurants no longer open,
- 17:02Speaker 1: so we won't go into anymore. Then we could be
- 17:05Speaker 1: liable for something. It's good days. Yeah, it's a good day,
- 17:09Speaker 1: you know, like you say you were. You know, it's
- 17:10Speaker 1: only Sunday Morning Football, but you know we we did
- 17:14Speaker 1: take it seriously and we did when we were playing.
- 17:16Speaker 1: And you know, you got theater and so we're mental
- 17:20Speaker 1: health and everything like you know, being part of a
- 17:22Speaker 1: team is always is great. And you said yourself, you
- 17:25Speaker 1: know when you finish football when we were new into
- 17:28Speaker 1: and finally folded and you had nothing to do for
- 17:31Speaker 1: a few years, and it was a big loss for
- 17:33Speaker 1: me on a Sunday morning as well, not you know,
- 17:36Speaker 1: not having to get up at ridiculous amount of hours
- 17:39Speaker 1: and go and pick people up from different houses a
- 17:43Speaker 1: Paul Stenton.
- 17:44Speaker 4: And you know, and yeah, it used to be just
- 17:48Speaker 4: a great time.
- 17:49Speaker 1: We we love playing as part of a team. I mean,
- 17:55Speaker 1: I'd love to do walking football game, but I've got
- 17:57Speaker 1: too many elements that I just couldn't do that anymore.
- 18:00Speaker 1: But physically, mentally, I'm still eighteen years of age.
- 18:05Speaker 4: You know, I want to play.
- 18:07Speaker 1: And I'm sure there's a lot of people out there
- 18:09Speaker 1: in like you know, in their fifties sixties that probably
- 18:13Speaker 1: feel the same. And you know, if they want to
- 18:15Speaker 1: get back into football. And you say it's a non
- 18:18Speaker 1: contact spot, you don't have to run. If you had
- 18:21Speaker 1: any sort of skill before, you know, this is this
- 18:24Speaker 1: is the game for you, isn't it. I mean you
- 18:26Speaker 1: get the ball and nobody's going to tackle you.
- 18:28Speaker 4: You can pass it again.
- 18:30Speaker 3: Sunday League is absolutely brutal, as my son is finding out.
- 18:34Speaker 1: Yeah, there's a different couple. We remember some of the
- 18:39Speaker 1: teams when we were we were playing and you saw them.
- 18:43Speaker 1: We've got We won't mention team names, but certain teams
- 18:48Speaker 1: you come up against and you think, oh god, we
- 18:49Speaker 1: don't want to be playing them and it's raining. Yeah,
- 18:52Speaker 1: and then you see who the referee is and you
- 18:54Speaker 1: think with this is not this is not going to
- 18:56Speaker 1: end a bit like folksing the victor now with the referee.
- 19:00Speaker 3: That's certain son of a Premier league.
- 19:03Speaker 1: Yeah, we won't mention mister durst over. Did I say
- 19:06Speaker 1: that out loud? Yeah? Yeah, I mean it is as
- 19:11Speaker 1: I say. If you do want to get involved in
- 19:14Speaker 1: walking football, Stephen Pete would love to see you on
- 19:17Speaker 1: Thursday night. You're there this Thursday. Ye're this Thursday seven
- 19:20Speaker 1: to late seven to light the three yels come along?
- 19:23Speaker 1: Any experience is it or is it no expense? It's
- 19:30Speaker 1: only a fiver for now. I'm assuming that just pays
- 19:35Speaker 1: for the rent of the pitch. Yeah, and we'll have
