- 0:09Speaker 1: Hey, what's happened to everybody? Welcome into this edition of
- 0:11the Checko Daily. I, of course I'm your host Andrew Diiceco,
- 0:16and today we are going to talk about three Eagles
- 0:20defenders who I believe that are most under the microscope.
- 0:25Yesterday we took a look on the offensive side of
- 0:27the ball. We got into you know, aj Dillon, Kenyon Green,
- 0:31and Johnny Wilson. Today we're gonna start things off on
- 0:34the defensive line and that player is second, I'm sorry,
- 0:40third year defensive tackle Morojomo. Morojomo is going to have
- 0:46to step into an elevated role this year, There's no
- 0:49way around it. But this is also a player who
- 0:53played thirty seven percent of the snaps last season, which
- 0:58comes out the three eighty eight. That's the same amount
- 1:00of snaps that Jordan Davis played. But for a Jomo,
- 1:04he's going to have to really wear the brunt of
- 1:08a toning for the loss of Milton Williams and being
- 1:11that sort of pass rushing disrupted presence. To compliment Jalen Carter,
- 1:18what I like about a Jomo is that he has power.
- 1:24Despite being an undersized tackle, very violent hands, his motor
- 1:28never stops running and when you couple all of those
- 1:32things together, I mean, I think you're going to get
- 1:36a player that should be able to help the Eagles
- 1:38immediately in a more expanded role. But he's under the
- 1:42microscope because he hasn't yet done it. But the signs
- 1:46are all there for a player who's immediately ready to
- 1:49turn that corner with a larger role. But it's an
- 1:53important role, and until we see it manifest on the field,
- 1:57he's going to be under the microscope. But Moro is
- 2:01one of my breakout candidates. He's not necessarily flying under
- 2:03the radar. That's not what this exercise is about. But
- 2:07he's also shown up on other folks' breakout lists, and
- 2:10I really do think that you look at the opportunity
- 2:12versus the skill set and that marriage and I think
- 2:15that you're going to see a player who's going to
- 2:18have a profound effect on the complexion of this defense
- 2:26and how it ultimately functions. Vic Vangiel has been effusive
- 2:31in his praise for Moro in the past, and I
- 2:33would imagine and that's going to continue this year as
- 2:36long as continues to go on his path of development,
- 2:44which I think that we've seen that that jump from
- 2:48year one to year two and now the big one
- 2:51from year two to year three. On the other the
- 2:56other level of the defense, which is the edge rusher group,
- 3:01I'm looking at josh Usha who the Eagles signed as
- 3:05a free agent. He's squarely under the microscope for me
- 3:08because he's someone who obviously in the past he has
- 3:13been someone who's racked up double digit sacks. We saw
- 3:16eleven and a half with the Patriots, you know, back
- 3:18in twenty twenty two. That also happened to coincide with
- 3:22the most snaps he played in a season. He played
- 3:25thirty eight percent of the Patriots snaps that year. But
- 3:30the past two seasons he's combined for five sacks in
- 3:34his time with the Patriots and the Chiefs. So I
- 3:38guess the question there is was it simply he wasn't
- 3:41a scheme fit or was he maybe exploited a little
- 3:43bit and did he showcase some of his deficiencies. What
- 3:48we've learned from Vic Vangio, we're gonna find out pretty
- 3:51quickly whether or not ushe actually fits into this Eagles defense.
- 3:55We learned that with Bryce Huff that the marriage wasn't
- 3:59exact going to be smooth. It was really turbulent early on,
- 4:05and it really wasn't until Bryce Huff got to the
- 4:09open practice with the Patriots that he flashed at all
- 4:12that summer. He picked up a couple of quote unquote sacks.
- 4:15But aside from that, it was evident that it wasn't
- 4:19necessarily a good pairing with Fangio and Huff based on
- 4:23scheme we're gonna find out about ushe because for me,
- 4:27I think that if he is your fourth edge rusher,
- 4:29that's solid value and he's proven it before. He is
- 4:33a one dimensional player. He's really only a pass rusher,
- 4:37doesn't give you much in terms of special teams. But
- 4:40I want to see what he can do while being
- 4:43able to have no pressure and thrive in that role.
- 4:47Can you be consistent? Can you stack consistently good days
- 4:51in practice and go out there and earn your place
- 4:54and utilize this opportunity as a revival for your career.
- 4:59Because when Zach Bond talked about Spring practices and the
- 5:04meeting that they had, his one year prove it deal
- 5:07signing that ended up sort of parlaying into a three year,
- 5:12fifty one million dollar contract. He made good on it,
- 5:15and he became one of the best linebackers in the league. Well,
- 5:17that was something that most resonated with ushe who also
- 5:20signed a one year prove it deal. That's all good
- 5:23and want to be motivated by Bond's story, But now
- 5:27it's up to him to go out there and prove it.
- 5:29There's no excuses. The Eagles have a tremendous coaching staff
- 5:32to work with, and they have a defense that knows
- 5:35exactly what it's looking for. So because we don't necessarily
- 5:39know what we're getting in Usha, that's why he's squarely
- 5:42under the radar and finally rounding things out on the
- 5:47back end at safety, it's got to be Sidney Brown. Look,
- 5:50Sidney Brown's entering his third season with the Eagles. No
- 5:54one would doubt his energy, his intensity, and the ferocity
- 6:00in which he flies around on the football field. But
- 6:04in order to really thrive or find your footing in
- 6:06a Vic Fangio defense, Sidney Brown's gonna have to prove
- 6:10to be a little bit more restrained play within the
- 6:14structure of Fangio's defense. It's also important to reiterate that
- 6:20Sidney Brown wasn't here when he was drafted under a
- 6:26different defensive staff. So Fangio is gonna get a long
- 6:31look at Sidney Brown, of course, but he's going to
- 6:34have to alter his game a little bit to really
- 6:36match what Fangio looks for in a safety, which obviously
- 6:41I've mentioned this before, but safeties and linebackers carry considerable
- 6:45responsibilities in the Fangio defense, and so Sidney Brown's gonna
- 6:50have to be more detailed and tight in the way
- 6:54that he approaches things. I'll also say this because I've
- 6:57gotten a lot of this. Well, Sidney Brown wasn't playing
- 7:00over Tristan McCollum and everything else. Sidney Brown was deprived
- 7:04of his second offseason. He was recovering from a knee injury.
- 7:07He got a ton of mental reps. He was fully
- 7:09engaged during the summer, but that always takes you so far.
- 7:13By the time October rolled around that he was activated
- 7:16and played in the game, he was relegated to special
- 7:18teams because guess what. As I alluded to, this is
- 7:21a tough defense to master on the fly, especially playing
- 7:25the position that he plays. So it's understandable that he
- 7:28was behind the eight ball and he's sort of finding
- 7:31his way. But now I talked about Ousche. There's no
- 7:35excuses here because he knows exactly what Fanjo's looking for.
- 7:39He knows the defense. Now, he's been afforded the full offseason,
- 7:43and he also has another year of working with safety's
- 7:46coach Joe Casper, who undoubtedly is refining some areas of
- 7:50Sydney's game. Look the Sidney Brown offered the same big
- 7:56playability as a Drew mccooba. No, he is a hone
- 8:00setting player that is probably best suit to be a
- 8:04box safety. But you can't write him off in this
- 8:07safety competition because it's too early. I think that he's
- 8:11someone that is probably going to make some splash plays
- 8:14in camp, but consistency is going to be key and
- 8:18he's going to have to give everything. He's got to
- 8:21be able to kind of hold off rookie safety Drew Macouba.
- 8:27So there you have it. That's three players on the
- 8:30defensive side that I think you can all make serious
- 8:32cases for that they're under the microscope, and there's countless
- 8:36more I could have named. Jordan Davis is another player,
- 8:39but I highlighted a player at different levels of the
- 8:42defense because there's going to be a spotlight on them.
- 8:46They are under the microscope for various reasons. They're all
- 8:50expected to undertake significant roles on this football team, and
- 8:57they're gonna have a lot of eyes on him this
- 8:58summer because they have a golden opportunity to go out
- 9:01there and seize it. Well, that's going to do it
- 9:04for this edition of the Checko Daily. I am Andrew
- 9:06to check Oh and I will talk to everybody tomorrow.
- 9:11Have a great one.
