- 0:00Got your Bible, Hebrews chapter 13.
- 0:02He was up to 13. Now, I'm going to preach this
- 0:04sermon differently than I preached the first service.
- 0:07So in fact not totally different but completely different almost.
- 0:12Okay, so I'm going to begin this way as you turn to Hebrews
- 0:15chapter 13, we will look at verse number 9 today, I'm going
- 0:18to be in this way years ago, in our church, first started, we
- 0:21had a man in our church, who was a dear friend of mine who was
- 0:24involved in our recording Ministry.
- 0:27And the day one, when we met in a park, we began recording all
- 0:32of our sermons because when the church began, we wanted to be on
- 0:36the radio and the Lord had opened the opportunity for us to
- 0:38be on the radio, just one hour a day that was at 4:00 in the
- 0:46morning but that's all we got. But we took it.
- 0:49And so we had to record everything that we that we
- 0:52preached. And of course, he was there to
- 0:55be courted on that Sunday. We first started in 1994 and of
- 1:01course, Don Davis who still works are sound Ministry is with
- 1:04us today still here after 20 years.
- 1:06Wow, Don. What commitment?
- 1:08You're great, man, but he worked with with Don and so we went
- 1:13from the from the, from the park to, to a school and we were to
- 1:17school for about a year and then we moved to a church in Glendora
- 1:22church is no longer there. They sold the church and built
- 1:26houses there. Unfortunate.
- 1:28But we went there and this man still was involved in a
- 1:34recording. The unfortunate thing about it
- 1:36is so many times because we use different equipment at different
- 1:39times, sometimes the recording didn't take.
- 1:42So I had to come back on Monday and re-preach Sunday, sermon, or
- 1:46come back on Thursday and re-preach Wednesday night's
- 1:49sermon. Okay, that happened quite a few
- 1:52times probably 13 or 14 times less than 20, but more than more
- 1:57than N. And of course this man would
- 2:00come and he lived close to the church.
- 2:01He would come in and we record the message and hear the message
- 2:05again. and, After a period of time, you came to realize that
- 2:12this this man had had begun to adopt a different belief than
- 2:17the church. And I remember he went through
- 2:19our membership class, he was a member, he's signed our
- 2:22doctrinal statement and all that kind of stuff.
- 2:25But word got back to me that he was beginning to learn in
- 2:30believe something different about the Christ.
- 2:35And so we came to realize that he no longer believed in the
- 2:38deity of Christ, that Christ was God In the Flesh.
- 2:43So I set him down and began to talk with him about these
- 2:45things. And as we sat down, we talked
- 2:49about them. And and I said, who are you
- 2:51listening to? Who are you talking to?
- 2:55Well, he was taking Jehovah's Witnesses and bringing them into
- 2:58his house and talking with them about what it is, they believed
- 3:03he did this on a regular basis. And the more he did it, the more
- 3:07he realized he didn't believe that Jesus was God In the Flesh.
- 3:15And so as I was talking to him in my office one day and going
- 3:18through, scripture with him, I said you proved to me that Jesus
- 3:21isn't God. Go ahead.
- 3:22Try it. Sweet ride.
- 3:26I kept saying wrong verse can't do that wrong again and wrong
- 3:30again and so you can explain to him the deity of Christ and how
- 3:33the Bible so eloquently. And so clearly presents.
- 3:36That Jesus is God In the Flesh from the Old Testament to the
- 3:41New Testament from Genesis to revelation.
- 3:45We spent hours talking about the deity of Christ, and he just
- 3:50would not. Believe.
- 3:54So I said to him, listen, I will give you one more verse and
- 3:57that's John 8:24, unless you believe that I am, he you will
- 4:00die in your sins. Unless you believe that Jesus is
- 4:04the god who spoke to Moses from the burning bush and Exodus
- 4:07chapter 3, you will die in your sins.
- 4:10That's all I have for you. Because you don't repent for
- 4:14what you believe about. Jesus Christ.
- 4:17You will spend eternity. Inhale.
- 4:22He said, okay. You know, if my office unless
- 4:27the year later he was dead. He never turned his life around.
- 4:32But he got caught up listening to the wrong kinds of people.
- 4:37Did he lose his salvation? No, he didn't lose his
- 4:40salvation. He never truly was bored again
- 4:42to believe with, to begin with. That's why he was so easily
- 4:47duped and led astray sync with these.
- 4:50Four tells us that Satan blinds our minds so that we don't
- 4:54believe in the deity of Christ. That won't believe that Jesus is
- 4:58actually God In the Flesh. Because once you believe that
- 5:01Jesus is God, okay, you can begin to understand that the
- 5:05work on the cross was sufficient for your saving Saving Grace.
- 5:12So it's unfortunate that that took place, but over the years
- 5:15as Elders, we've had to deal with people in the church who
- 5:18have listened to others outside the church that have led them
- 5:22astray. We've even had to discipline
- 5:26Elders in our church, who began to believe different things,
- 5:30other than what, the Bible actually taught about the
- 5:33identity and the ministry of Christ himself. and that was,
- 5:38Unfortunate, it is unfortunate. But we are supremely concerned
- 5:46about what people believe about the gospel.
- 5:50What they believe about Christ. And so we want to keep our ear
- 5:56close to the ground to hear what's being taught in Sunday.
- 5:59School classes was being taught at home.
- 6:01Bible studies what's being taught with our young people,
- 6:06our college students because we want to know that truth is being
- 6:10taught. Why is that so important?
- 6:14Because Hebrews chapter 13 verse number 9, the writer of Hebrews
- 6:18gives us the sixth principle, the sixth Timeless truth that we
- 6:26need to tackle as well as to treasure.
- 6:30And that is in verse number 9, which we just way do not be
- 6:34carried away by varied and strange teachings.
- 6:38What is good for the heart to be, strengthened by Grace, not
- 6:41by Foods through which those who were so occupied.
- 6:46We're not benefited. The sixth truth is that you need
- 6:54to refuse to listen to wrong teaching.
- 7:00Refuse to listen. To wrong teaching.
- 7:07Right of Hebrews is writing to. Hebrew people there Jews, right?
- 7:13Jews are big on dietary laws. They're big on ceremonial laws.
- 7:19There are big on rituals. Okay.
- 7:24So much so that they were external trappings that they
- 7:28believed would draw them closer to God.
- 7:31They didn't but that's what they believed.
- 7:35So the writer of Hebrews is going to say to them, listen I
- 7:37know what you believed before. You gave your life to Christ,
- 7:41don't go back in that direction, don't listen to those various
- 7:46kinds of teachings, and strange teachings.
- 7:50That will take you back to a place.
- 7:53That will not be a benefit to you spiritually.
- 7:56But you need to be enriched and nourished by the words of God's
- 8:00grace. Very important statement.
- 8:05Because the church today in America is being tossed to and
- 8:10fro by every wind of Doctrine and that's unfortunate.
- 8:16Preachers are mainly at fault for that and I'm a preacher.
- 8:20So I can say that because we sometimes don't do what we've
- 8:26been called to do. To preach the word in season and
- 8:31out of season. But more about that.
- 8:34In a moment, it's imperative that we understand that.
- 8:39That to pick up on varied, kinds of teachings is dangerous.
- 8:47I mean, most churches are filled with with babes babes.
- 8:54You know when you get your your grandkids or your kids together
- 8:58and they're really small, all right in there.
- 9:00Crawling on on the ground, right?
- 9:03When they come across an object they get it!
- 9:06They pick it up and the first thing to do is put it where in
- 9:10their mouth No matter what it is, no matter where it is, no
- 9:14matter where it's been, they're going to pick it up and put it
- 9:17in their mouth. That's the way most Christians
- 9:20are in the church. They're crawling around
- 9:25listening to all kinds of teaching and trying to put it in
- 9:29their mouth thinking that it's going to help them.
- 9:32But in reality, it's going to hurt them because it's not sound
- 9:36Doctrine, it's not the truth of the word of the Living.
- 9:41God So the writer of Hebrews says, listen.
- 9:45I know about your your rituals in your your ceremonies in your
- 9:49dietary laws, put those things aside, never put aside the moral
- 9:53law, right? Because the moral law is Eternal
- 9:56Word of God that sustains forever, but the ceremonial laws
- 10:00are ritualistic laws. Those dietary laws that you're
- 10:04engaged in are not going to help you in your walk with the lord.
- 10:07They're only going to drag you down.
- 10:09So he says, don't be carried away, don't be removed.
- 10:13Removed by them. Don't be caught in the Trap.
- 10:19Because if you are, it's not going to benefit you because it
- 10:22hasn't been in benefited anyone else ever.
- 10:27You get so many times the church finds itself.
- 10:31Trying to feed off of things that do not benefit them. so
- 10:35right here who says, refuse to listen To wrong teaching.
- 10:41Now, the writer of Hebrews did not have to battle social media,
- 10:45right? That was not a thing back in
- 10:47those days today, you can listen to anybody anywhere at anytime,
- 10:54right? Everybody's got a podcast.
- 10:57Everybody's got a YouTube channel.
- 10:58Everybody's got this going on. So are you going to do is tune
- 11:01in listen. But you got to make sure you
- 11:03listen to the right people. So we times people say, well,
- 11:07you know, he was so good. He always talked about Jesus.
- 11:11Well, if he talks about Buddha and Muhammad, you're not going
- 11:13to listen to him. So certainly is going to talk
- 11:15about Jesus because if you listen, if he talks about
- 11:19Buddha, you're not gonna listen to him.
- 11:22That's not Mohammed, you know, you can tune them out.
- 11:25But he said it so enthusiastically.
- 11:29He said it was such conviction. Yeah.
- 11:32But didn't he see? What was true.
- 11:35What was right? What was pure?
- 11:38What was holy? There are a lot of charlatans
- 11:42out there. A lot of people out there that
- 11:44don't teach the truth. And the unfortunate thing is
- 11:48that there are many Christians who fall?
- 11:51Prey to that kind of teaching. Satan loves to destroy your
- 11:55testimony. Satan wants to divide the church
- 11:58Satan wants to destroy the people in the church.
- 12:00You know, so many times, we think that we we leave here.
- 12:02We're going to go out and fight Satan, no, no Satan's here.
- 12:06He's in the church. You think he's out there
- 12:09someplace? Well, yeah, the lust of the
- 12:11flesh, the lust of the eyes, the pride of life.
- 12:14This is that has nothing to do with Satan, that's just you be
- 12:17careful about your lust for the flesh.
- 12:19Your pride of life, right? Your lust of the eyes.
- 12:23No, we can fall prey to all kinds of sin.
- 12:26And Satan doesn't have to tempt us because we are so prone to
- 12:30falling into sin. But in the church, Inside the
- 12:35church. Is where Satan loves to exist.
- 12:42He loves to be in the church. We can divide the church sow
- 12:46dissension in the church get false teachers that are rise
- 12:50within. The Church of Paul says in Acts
- 12:51chapter 20, He is looking to destroy from the inside out.
- 12:58He wants his, he wants to destroy for.
- 13:00The I said I didn't but he can't write, he couldn't destroy the
- 13:04outside, in just look at what covid did covid.
- 13:07Did nothing to destroy the church.
- 13:10But yet. if you can work on the inside and get false teachers to
- 13:15arise from the inside, you can destroy the church.
- 13:21All you got to do is read the book of Revelation, Revelation,
- 13:222 & 3, And see what Satan did to the church at Ephesus.
- 13:27When Paul said these words to those in Ephesus and accept the
- 13:3020, He said. Verse 28 be on guard for
- 13:36yourselves. And for all the flock among
- 13:38which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers to Shepherd the
- 13:40Church of God, which he purchased with his own blood.
- 13:44She's challenging the Ephesian Elders.
- 13:47You need to Shepherd the Church of God, you need to protect the
- 13:51church. Because Christ shed his blood
- 13:54for the church. He says, verse 20.
- 13:57I know not, I think, or this is the possibility, or this might
- 14:02happen somewhere down the road. So, watch out now, he says, I
- 14:07know very emphatic. I know that after my departure
- 14:12Savage wolves will come in among you not sparing the flock and
- 14:18from among your own selves men will arise speaking perverse,
- 14:22things to draw away the disciples after them.
- 14:26Therefore be on the alert remembering that night and day
- 14:31for a period of three years. I did not cease to admonish
- 14:34each. One of them are which each one
- 14:36with tears and now I commend you to God in the word of his grace
- 14:40which is able to build you up and to give you an inheritance
- 14:43among all those who are sanctified I have one protection
- 14:47than only one. It's the word of his grace.
- 14:51Nothing else I can do for you. I've been here for three years.
- 14:54I'm on my way out. And when I leave, mark it down,
- 14:58Savage wolves will arise from among your own.
- 15:03Selves is a Savage was going to cover the outside, then arise
- 15:08from the inside. So the only thing I can do is
- 15:13commend you to God and the word of his grace, which is able to
- 15:16build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all those who
- 15:19believe because you only protection, you only defense
- 15:24against false teaching is the truth of the word of God.
- 15:30That's it. Need to master it.
- 15:34Paul said to those in galatia church at galatia.
- 15:38Oh Church what has happened to you, who has Bewitched you Who
- 15:44has come in among you, who has turned you aside.
- 15:49That has got you to believe another gospel.
- 15:52How is it? You had begun in the spirit.
- 15:55But now you're trying to be perfected In the Flesh.
- 15:58How is it? You began so good.
- 16:01And now things are so bad. What happened to you guys?
- 16:06That was the church at galatia? Church of Ephesus.
- 16:10It's not around today. Because of false teaching Came
- 16:15From Within and destroyed the church.
- 16:20Paul says, in Romans 16 verse 17, the church at Rome.
- 16:24He says, now, I urge you Brethren, keep your eye on those
- 16:27who cause dissensions and hindrances contrary to the
- 16:31teaching which you learned and turn away from them for such men
- 16:37are slaves. Not of our Lord Christ, but of
- 16:40their own appetites and by their smooth and flattering speech,
- 16:44they deceive, the hearts of the unsuspecting, be careful, watch
- 16:49out. People are they're going to
- 16:52cause dissension among you going to deceive you and Lead.
- 16:56You astray be very, very careful.
- 17:00And then Paul says, in first technique with these 11 false
- 17:05prophets are deceitful workers disguising themselves as
- 17:07Apostles of Christ. No wonder for even Satan
- 17:10disguises himself as an angel of Light.
- 17:12Therefore it is not surprising. If his servants also disguise
- 17:15themselves as Servants of righteousness, whose end will be
- 17:19according to their deeds. In other words, Satan is a
- 17:26master of deception. A Master of Disguise.
- 17:31Goalie back to the Book of Genesis.
- 17:33The third chapter He deceived. Adam and Eve, he told a lie.
- 17:42They believed a lie. The sin into the world.
- 17:47Satan is a master of deception. He always disguises himself as
- 17:52an angel of Light. In his emissaries, they disguise
- 17:56themselves as angels of light, they look good on the outside.
- 18:01They, they smell good on the outside, but on the inside,
- 18:05that's Christ would say they're as rotten as dead men's bones.
- 18:12Remember in Matthew chapter 7, when Christ was ending The
- 18:14Sermon on the Mount, he talked about false teachers, beware of
- 18:18false teachers that are among you, right?
- 18:22They look like like sheep on the outside, but inside there,
- 18:26they're wolves, Savage, wolves and who's he talking about?
- 18:30He's talking about Pharisees scribes Sadducees.
- 18:34He's talking about the religious establishment of his day in
- 18:37Jerusalem. These are the guys, you got to
- 18:39watch out for. Watch out for the homosexual or
- 18:45the adulterer or the drunkard. You know, they're Sinners.
- 18:50Gotta watch out for those who disguise themselves her false
- 18:54teachers. Who get you to believe that what
- 18:57they're saying. Is right.
- 19:01Church at colossae. Second chapter First number 8,
- 19:05Paul says the same thing. John gets in love.
- 19:09At first John 4 verse. Number one is this test the
- 19:11spirits so John gets in on as well.
- 19:14Peter second, Peter chapter 2. He gets you in on the
- 19:17conversation about false teaching and Jude.
- 19:20Yep. Same with Jude jube that verse 3
- 19:24beloved. I while I was making every
- 19:26effort to write to you about our common salvation, I felt the
- 19:29necessity to write to you, appealing, that you contend
- 19:32earnestly for the faith, which was once for all handed down to
- 19:35the Saints. Why for A certain person's have
- 19:39crept in unnoticed those who are long beforehand, marked out for
- 19:46this condemnation, ungodly persons who turned the grace of
- 19:51our God, into licentiousness and deny our only master and Lord
- 19:56Jesus Christ. Juices, I want to write to you
- 20:00about our Salvation because it's so great. but, but, There are
- 20:07certain men that have crept in unnoticed.
- 20:11Many turn the grace of God into licentiousness who deny our Lord
- 20:17and savior. That is they tell you that you
- 20:20can go ahead and send us. Okay?
- 20:21Because because God's grace will cover that.
- 20:24It's okay live as you want to live And yet he says they've
- 20:29crept in unnoticed, but they're here, Jesus warned, and Matthew,
- 20:36and the gospels they're coming. Paul warned, when I leave, they
- 20:41will arise within Peter. John Jude all said they're
- 20:48coming until June funny says, guess what?
- 20:52They're already here. They have crept in and you don't
- 20:56even know they're among you. Wow.
- 21:01That's amazing. Think about that.
- 21:06And so, the writer of Hebrews says, You got to refuse to
- 21:10listen to wrong teaching. You can't be listening to those
- 21:14who because of their dietary rituals or because their
- 21:18ceremonial ax, or because their holy days or, because of their
- 21:22clothes and wearing those kinds of garments.
- 21:25It's going to make you any better in Christ eyes or even
- 21:28commend you to God. That's first, Christian Saint.
- 21:30Paul says listen, no matter what you eat.
- 21:33You're never going to please God by what you eat.
- 21:35Let's First Corinthians chapter 8.
- 21:38Because God doesn't care about what you eat Pastor.
- 21:41How can you say that? Because the kingdom of God is
- 21:43not about eating and drinking. It's about righteousness.
- 21:48Peace and joy. In the Holy Spirit, the king of
- 21:52Gods internal. What defiles a man comes from
- 21:56within the man, not from what the man takes on the outside and
- 22:00puts into me, right? That's why Christ told Peter and
- 22:06exit. Through 10 don't call anything
- 22:08unclean that I've already labeled clean.
- 22:11Meaning, that Cornelius was going to be the first Gentile.
- 22:14Who was born again in the book of Acts and great things are
- 22:17going to happen because in the Gentile world because of the
- 22:20work of Christ on calvary's Cross.
- 22:24So important. So, the writer of Hebrews says,
- 22:29I want to warn you about something.
- 22:32Good to refuse to listen to wrong, kind of teaching the
- 22:35church needs to be discerning. And the only way he can learn to
- 22:39discern between what is good and what is evil, what is right and
- 22:41what is wrong is to know the truth of the Living God that's
- 22:45it. So Paul in his epistle to the
- 22:50church at thessalonica, gives the Clarion call for discernment
- 22:57in the church. He says these words in first
- 23:01Thessalonians, chapter 5 verse number 19.
- 23:04Verse number 20 do not despise prophetic utterances.
- 23:11Do not despise prophetic utterances.
- 23:13Remember, we told you last week and the week before that
- 23:15Proverbs 13, 13 says what don't despise the word of God.
- 23:24Or you will be in debt to it. Don't disregard what God says,
- 23:29don't despise, what God says, don't turn a deaf ear to What
- 23:32God Says, or you'll be in debt to that.
- 23:34In other words, you'll suffer the consequences of those who
- 23:36live and Disobedience to the word of God.
- 23:40Then we took you to Proverbs chapter 16 last week to show you
- 23:43that he listens to the word will be rewarded.
- 23:47Proverbs 23:23 says by truth, never sell it, do all you can to
- 23:52obtain truth because truth is the only thing that matters.
- 23:58And now Paul comes in first and 25 says, do not despise do not
- 24:01disregard, not look down upon prophetic utterances.
- 24:04In other words, he's not telling them not to look down upon
- 24:08prophecy or people predicting the future.
- 24:10That's not what he's saying. Prophetic utterances is the
- 24:12reiteration of biblical truth. So those who prophesy
- 24:17biblically, who give to you, the truth of God, do not despise.
- 24:20The prophetic utterances given to you by those who give you the
- 24:23truth of God's word. Don't despise it.
- 24:26He says instead examine everything.
- 24:31Good words. Go.
- 24:34I get mods 0, which means to scrutinize to test.
- 24:40It's a process by which you take something through a grid to
- 24:44prove whether or not it's authentic and genuine.
- 24:48This is what you got to do. Make sure that you don't despise
- 24:53prophetic utterances, that you listen to them.
- 24:55But you examine everything. Everything that has spoken, I
- 24:59would I would expect that every one of you would examine
- 25:02everything that I say every Sunday just don't say well
- 25:05Pastor Lance that, it must be true.
- 25:07Don't do that, that's the wrong attitude to have examine it.
- 25:13Re-read it. That's why when we preach the
- 25:15word we take you from verse 2 verse 2 verse 2 verse by because
- 25:18the Bible interprets the Bible. So if Paul said it Peters mother
- 25:22said Peter said it Jude's going to say juice said it John's
- 25:25going to say it. Why?
- 25:26Because Jesus said it's all over the place.
- 25:28So the Bible proves the Bible. So it's imperative that we
- 25:32examine every prophetic utterance and then you cling to
- 25:36that which is good. And you abstain from, every form
- 25:40of evil. That's a verse of my mom and dad
- 25:41used to always go to me. When I I was a kid growing up,
- 25:44hey abstain from every form of evil, and that's true, you
- 25:47should do that, right? But that's not what the verse
- 25:50says. The verse says, abstaining from
- 25:53everything that's evil about what you just examine about.
- 25:56The prophetic utterance, that's not true.
- 25:58That makes sense, that's what it means.
- 26:00So you don't despise prophetic utterances, first Thessalonians
- 26:045 verse number 20, but then you examine everything, that's been
- 26:09spoken, hold fast, that which is good cling to that, which is
- 26:13Hold on to that which is true. But abstain shun get rid of
- 26:18everything, that's evil, that was spoken.
- 26:22That's the certain. That's what the Discerning
- 26:25Spirit. Does seem weird to use in first
- 26:28Thessalonians chapter 4. When it says, we are to abstain
- 26:31from sexual immorality, we don't dabble in sexual immorality.
- 26:36No, we abstain from it. You turn away from me, you shut
- 26:39it. Okay.
- 26:42First, Peter 2:11 abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against
- 26:47your soul, right? In other words, stay away from
- 26:50those things will seems to with those who teach evil things
- 26:54things that are unprofitable cling to that, which is good.
- 26:57Not don't cling to that, which is entertaining, but cling to
- 27:00that, which is good, which is true, which is accurate.
- 27:04But abstain from every form of evil that style you.
- 27:09So Paul says the same thing, the right of Hebrews says by
- 27:12refusing to listen to wrong gun, you teaching The call for
- 27:17discernment in the church is huge.
- 27:21For the most part, the church is undiscerning.
- 27:25Why is that? How does that happen?
- 27:29What office is it this way? Tragically.
- 27:32There are many in the contemporary church.
- 27:34Who also lacks spiritual discernment.
- 27:36Such people are far better at staying in tune with cultural
- 27:39Trends. Then they are at appreciating
- 27:42and understanding biblical Doctrine in some cases.
- 27:45Hold churches, have shifted their focus from the clear
- 27:48teaching of scripture, to the felt needs of Sinners.
- 27:52They want to make the church service comfortable and
- 27:56non-confrontational As a result, the message a champion are
- 28:02theologically week and the people, they serve our
- 28:05doctrinally naive. Those churches are defenseless
- 28:12Against Terror. So true.
- 28:16Most people in the church are not equipped.
- 28:21To defend against Terror. Paul says, if you just for God's
- 28:25given gifted men to the church Apostles prophets evangelists
- 28:31pastors and teachers. Those are gifted men that God
- 28:34has given to the church. There are spiritual gifts that
- 28:37every one of you has but God gives gifted me into the church.
- 28:42So the church will be equipped. The church should be mature that
- 28:46you should grow up through the preaching and teaching of the
- 28:48word of God. So that people are not tossed to
- 28:51and fro by every wind of Aaron being deceived by spirits that
- 28:56will come along and move them astray.
- 29:01So Paul says listen examine everything.
- 29:05Why? because, for the most part,
- 29:09People are taught by men, who all they want to do is be
- 29:13contemporarily relevant. Who want to be in style?
- 29:19Who will be cool with the things they say, who want to tell?
- 29:22Good stories to get you to laugh or or sad stories because you to
- 29:25cry play on your emotions. They didn't the lights in the
- 29:29service, have smoke that comes out in a service because it's
- 29:32all about the mood that they can create thinking that he can
- 29:35manipulate you into believing what they're saying.
- 29:39All that. You need to refuse the turn away
- 29:44from This author goes on to say there are six reasons.
- 29:49For the disturbing lack of discernment that characterizes
- 29:53the contemporary church. Number one, he says, The recent
- 29:58Trend among many image evangelicals to minimize the
- 30:02importance of Doctrine. Those this Camp argue that
- 30:06biblical Clarity is both divisive and and loving to them.
- 30:11It puts up walls, lack humility, and hinders Unity.
- 30:14The reality however, is that the church has suffered severe
- 30:17consequences for abandoning, its commitment to sound Doctrine.
- 30:22So true Number two, he says the church has become less objective
- 30:27in its Outlook substituting. Unconditional Truth for moral
- 30:32relativism and postmodern subjectivity.
- 30:36Instead of seeing truth in terms of black and white, many
- 30:38Christians treated as a gray area, the Bible is clearly
- 30:43antithetical. It makes absolute distinction
- 30:46between right and wrong truth. And error.
- 30:51Then the three part of its contemporary Vengeance.
- 30:54T strategy. The church has a bend in its
- 30:57commitment to the power of scripture and become preoccupied
- 31:00with his image in order to reach the culture is become just like
- 31:06the culture. if you go to church, And your church is just
- 31:11like your culture you're not in church.
- 31:15You're in the culture. That'd be different, right?
- 31:20Uniquely, and distinctly different than the culture.
- 31:23Because that is a number four in consequence.
- 31:26Of the previous point, the church's current lack of
- 31:28discernment stems from a failure to properly study and interpret
- 31:31the scriptures. That's true.
- 31:34Number five. He says, is it General
- 31:37abandonment of church discipline in Evangelical circles, when
- 31:41God's people fail to confront sin, and heresy wickedness,
- 31:46within the body goes, unchecked the congregation, and evidently
- 31:51accumulates more, and more unregenerate members,
- 31:54unbelievers, who feel comfortable, because their sin
- 31:57issues are never addressed even Grievous immorality and major,
- 32:02ethical lapses are sometimes overlooked ignored under a false
- 32:06pretense of love, but a church cannot effectively promote
- 32:10discernment if it happily condone sin or primarily
- 32:14consists of unsaved. Sinners, after all the
- 32:19congregation that thinks incorrectly about Holiness shows
- 32:24that it also thinks incorrectly about truth.
- 32:29So very true. And lastly says, the church is
- 32:34lack of. The sermon is the rampant void
- 32:36of spiritual maturity within its ranks.
- 32:39Those who are those with a superficial understanding of
- 32:42scripture, a weak grasp of sound Doctrine, and a deficient view
- 32:47of God cannot be discerning. Why is it our children, don't
- 32:55discern between good and evil, right?
- 32:57And wrong because they're not spiritually mature. as they
- 33:02begin to grow in their walk with the Lord, their senses are Fine,
- 33:07tuned to hear error. You need to be able to listen
- 33:12for error and no it when it arrives and no, the cling to
- 33:18that, which is good and abstain from every form of evil.
- 33:22Listen, if everybody in the church was this way, it would be
- 33:25so magnificent. That's why we teach you
- 33:29Doctrine. Let you do it during our
- 33:31announcement side. Why don't we teach you Doctrine
- 33:34every quarter because we want you to know what the Bible says
- 33:37about anthropology. What the Bible says about
- 33:41theology. What the Bible says about
- 33:43homology, pneumatology ecclesiology eschatology, right?
- 33:48We want you to know those things.
- 33:49Why? Because you need to be fed
- 33:52truth, fine, fine doctrine. That helps, you understand the
- 33:58truth between good and error. Unless we teach you, those
- 34:02things you're not going to learn them.
- 34:05I can't teach you every Doctrine from the pulpit, but we can
- 34:08teach you what are what we believe, and teach it on a
- 34:11consistent basis. So you can grow in your
- 34:14understanding of the gospel and the god, you serve.
- 34:20That is so important. That's why the greatest study
- 34:23you can ever embarked on. Is he attributes of God, right?
- 34:28Just studying the attributes of God, knowing your God who he is,
- 34:32how he functions. All those things.
- 34:34Just expound your understanding of the beauty and nature of the
- 34:38Living. God.
- 34:41And so, it's important that we understand these things.
- 34:43So, the writer of Hebrews says in Hebrews chapter 13 verse
- 34:46number 9, do not be carried away.
- 34:49Do not be removed by varied and strange teachings for it is good
- 34:52for the heart to be, strengthened by Grace, not by
- 34:55Foods through which those who were.
- 34:57So I keep I'd were not benefited, they do you, no good.
- 35:03But if you're nourished in the words of Grace, if you're
- 35:06strengthened by those words, that's what you need.
- 35:10That's why Paul said that. If he's an Elders, I commend you
- 35:12to God and the word of his grace, which is able to build
- 35:15you up, and to give you an inheritance, it's the word that
- 35:20saves, it's the word that sanctifies him.
- 35:23Christ has Sanctified them in truth.
- 35:25My word is truth. It's the word that satisfies job
- 35:28said, it Job chapter 23, right when he said, Ed.
- 35:33I treasure your words more than my necessary food, why?
- 35:36Because he knew that only thing that could satisfy him amidst,
- 35:39all of us pain and it's all of his turmoil.
- 35:41I missed all of the abuse he was receiving was what truth that's
- 35:46all that matters. It's all I have.
- 35:49It's only you can satisfy the man.
- 35:52His wife couldn't satisfy him. She was nowhere to be found.
- 35:54His friends couldn't satisfy him.
- 35:55That's for sure. They can say anything good.
- 35:58His health was in shambles, he lost his children, he lost
- 36:01everything. So how does the main find
- 36:03satisfaction when his life is totally tone of torn apart?
- 36:07The only place you can find satisfaction in the truths of
- 36:12God's holy word. See that's where it is.
- 36:17But if you don't know the truth, Candlelight, the truth.
- 36:21And move toward that truth. suppose that committee to God,
- 36:25the word of his grace, which is able to Build You Up, It's God's
- 36:29word that does that. And we need to come to grips.
- 36:34With that. I have in my presence here since
- 36:40the year 2001. My welcome mat.
- 36:45It's kind of old now and grungy See that's clean that used to
- 36:50because I keep stepping on it, but I had this underneath my Pew
- 36:55out of here, is since a man gave it to me when I preached on 1st
- 37:00Thessalonians 2 verse number 13, where the church of thessalonica
- 37:03put out the welcome mat for the word of the Living.
- 37:08God, it's my constant reminder, that, when I opened the word of
- 37:13God, I must welcome everything that God says And so I keep it
- 37:18here and there, he my pew. As a constant, reminder never
- 37:22do. I sit down stand up or walk
- 37:25around the front, without knowing that's there.
- 37:29Because as your pastor, if I don't put a welcome mat out to
- 37:33the word of the Lord, why would you write?
- 37:38And so, Paul commended the Church of thessalonica because
- 37:41they welcomed what was said, they received with joy and
- 37:46became imitators of Paul and Silas.
- 37:49And they realize that God's word was everything because he
- 37:53welcomed it in. And Paul says, the reason you
- 37:56welcome it is in is because it does a work in.
- 37:59You, who believe in, there's been a mighty work done in your
- 38:02lives because you believe, But so many times.
- 38:09We don't want to welcome the word.
- 38:12All right, Hebrews says these words.
- 38:16Hebrews chapter 19, I'm sorry. Progress at the 19th.
- 38:20Forgive me verse number 27. Cease listening.
- 38:28My son. To discipline.
- 38:33Cease, listening my son to discipline and you will stray
- 38:39from the words. Of knowledge.
- 38:44What a powerful verse. That all powerful, right?
- 38:48But they're powerful for this occasion.
- 38:51Do you know what happens when you stop listening to
- 38:53discipline? You stray from the words of not.
- 38:58Why is it people in the church stray away from the truth?
- 39:03Because they will not listen to the words of discipline.
- 39:07The words are discipline only come from the truth of God's
- 39:09word. What does God's word say, right?
- 39:13And so when you when you tell them what God's word says they
- 39:16are the words of discipline, they're the words of training.
- 39:19Their the words of of development that the words of
- 39:21instruction And if you refuse to listen to those words, guess
- 39:26what you will eventually stray away from the words of
- 39:29knowledge. Why because you become
- 39:33accustomed, not doing what God's word says.
- 39:37When you become accustomed, not obeying, what God's word says,
- 39:40it's easier to disobey the next time, and then the next time,
- 39:43and then the next time and then you got it.
- 39:46Thanks Tom. That's Stop listening to
- 39:51discipline my son. And you will certainly stray
- 39:55away from the words of knowledge. if I could tell you
- 39:59how many times, Over the 28 years that we've been together,
- 40:03we've warned people of that. They still care.
- 40:09We each other. It will affect you down the
- 40:11road. You will stray from the words of
- 40:15knowledge are not prophets. I'm not claiming to be prophets
- 40:18or Center profits. We're just quoting to you.
- 40:21What God says in his word is going to happen.
- 40:24Because you refused to listen to the words of discipline.
- 40:27You will stray, from the words of knowledge, it happens.
- 40:31It always does why Proverbs 13 13.
- 40:37If you despise the word of God, you'll be in debt to the word of
- 40:41God. Israel, is that way.
- 40:46Israel is so important to learn from Everything in the world is
- 40:51about Israel said that for 28 years going to see if the next
- 40:5528 of God gives me that long. Everything is about Israel.
- 40:59Always has been always will be okay. and God speaks to Israel
- 41:05in the book of Jeremiah He says these words.
- 41:10Jeremiah 50 verse number 30. An appalling and horrible thing
- 41:15has happened in the land. The prophets prophesy falsely.
- 41:20And the priests rule on their own authority.
- 41:25And my people love it. So, Other words, the prophets
- 41:31don't speak the truth. They just prophesy falsely.
- 41:35And the priests. They don't follow my authority,
- 41:38they follow their own authority. And because they do the people
- 41:42just love it. They eat it up.
- 41:45They eat it up. So the Lord says this and
- 41:49chapter 6, verse number 10, behold the word of the Lord has
- 41:52become a reproach to them. They have no Delight.
- 41:59In it, he ever met someone who no longer is Delights in the
- 42:03word of the Lord. You're met someone who when they
- 42:08hear the word of God, it becomes reproach to them.
- 42:13Why is it? Simply because they have not
- 42:16refused to listen to wrong teaching.
- 42:20They listen to prophets who prophesy falsely.
- 42:24They've listened to priest to work under their own authority.
- 42:29And they love it. So, Paul said, in second,
- 42:32Timothy 2:56, the preach the word in season out of season
- 42:35reprove rebuke, exhort with all long-suffering and patience,
- 42:38why? Because the time is coming when
- 42:40they will not endure sound Doctrine anymore.
- 42:44You don't want that. You know God's word doesn't
- 42:48tickle your ears. God's word boxes, your ears?
- 42:53Read your ears, boxed. Not a good feeling, that's God's
- 42:58word. If your is being tickled, that's
- 43:01not God's word because God words, confronts sin and deals
- 43:07with it so that you're convicted and changed.
- 43:12So God says this to Israel. This is the Lord stand by the
- 43:18ways and see and ask for the ancient paths the way they used
- 43:21to be. Where the good way is and walk
- 43:24in it and you will find rest for your souls.
- 43:28But they said, we will not walk. In it.
- 43:37When you refused. To listen to the words of
- 43:41discipline. You will walk away from the
- 43:46words of knowledge. so, I said, I watched Men over you.
- 43:56A mission to warn you of impending judgment.
- 44:00Saying, listen to the sound of the trumpet but they said we
- 44:05will not listen. Therefore hero Nations and Noah
- 44:11congregation was among them. Hear o Earth behold.
- 44:16I am bringing disaster on this people.
- 44:24The fruit of their plans. Because they have not listened
- 44:28to my words. and that's for my law, they have rejected it also,
- 44:37He who despises the word will be in debt to the word.
- 44:41He who ceases to listen to discipline will stray away from
- 44:45the words of knowledge. And God says, come this way.
- 44:52Walk the ancient past. Listen to what I had to say.
- 44:58We will not. I'll give you a Watchman.
- 45:03Who warned you who blow the trumpet to let you know, of
- 45:06impending judgment. We will not listen.
- 45:11Really. Okay, I will bring disaster
- 45:18about you. And Israel.
- 45:22Yep. For 70 years. they went off into
- 45:26Babylonian captivity simply because they did not refuse.
- 45:35To listen to wrong teaching. They delighted and listening to
- 45:40false teachers. And he delighted in listening to
- 45:44priests who functioned under their own authority through
- 45:47God's Authority. It cost him dearly.
- 45:53I don't want that for me. I don't want that for you.
- 45:57I don't want that for any believer.
- 46:00I want us to understand the beauty of God's holy word and
- 46:04the prize that we possess in holding in our hearts hiding it
- 46:11in our hearts, handling it correctly.
- 46:14So others will hear and believe and know this is the way walk in
- 46:19it. Let's pray father thank you for
- 46:22today. Thank you for your word.
- 46:26Thank you for the greatness of your truth.
- 46:29Our prayer Lord is that everyone of us.
- 46:34Every single one of us would truly. long to listen to you
- 46:39only There are so many people out there that are talking.
- 46:46Insane things. It's just aren't true.
- 46:51We need to be discerning. And the only way that happens is
- 46:55to be completely, commended and committed to the word of your
- 46:58grace. We can be built up in the faith
- 47:01and know the truth of a living. God as you leave this place
- 47:06today, help us to live for you. until you come again, as you
- 47:10most surely will in Jesus name, amen.
