- 0:49Speaker 6: We're as a great start.
- 0:51Speaker 5: To my god, this has been a little challenging going forward,
- 0:54Speaker 5: or at least that we have a guest and I think
- 0:56Speaker 5: you're going to introduce her.
- 0:58Speaker 6: Yes, yes, we do so. Today we are honored to
- 1:01Speaker 6: be joined by a trailblazer for West Virginia's capital city.
- 1:06Speaker 6: Never gets old for me to say this, our first
- 1:09Speaker 6: female mayor of the City of Charleston. Welcome to the podcast.
- 1:13Speaker 6: Amy Schuler Goodwin.
- 1:15Speaker 7: Thank you so much. I'm the first, but I won't
- 1:17Speaker 7: be the last. That's what I always say. Nobody says
- 1:20Speaker 7: that first but not last, and that's okay.
- 1:22Speaker 3: Okay, But let me ask you this.
- 1:23Speaker 5: Yeah, when you hear that, when that like, when you
- 1:26Speaker 5: hear somebody say that, what does that?
- 1:30Speaker 3: What does it mean to you? How do you feel
- 1:32Speaker 3: when you hear that?
- 1:33Speaker 5: Because that's got to be I mean, you have to
- 1:36Speaker 5: recognize the relevance and importance of it, Like where do
- 1:40Speaker 5: you take it when you hear it?
- 1:42Speaker 7: So delegate knows how when I say this, you want
- 1:44Speaker 7: me to give you the real real? Yeah, my children
- 1:47Speaker 7: now say that, mom, women to give you the real real.
- 1:50Speaker 7: I'll give you the real real. When it first happened,
- 1:53Speaker 7: I think when I was running years ago, I actually
- 1:57Speaker 7: didn't allow it to absorb in my brain as I
- 2:00Speaker 7: thought I didn't want to let people down, especially if
- 2:02Speaker 7: I didn't win. And then when I won, because I
- 2:05Speaker 7: think always in our life, when we're in public service
- 2:08Speaker 7: or and you're in some public position, you have a tagline.
- 2:11Speaker 7: What is your tagline? What is the thing that people
- 2:13Speaker 7: say about you? Right? And so initially I went, I
- 2:17Speaker 7: don't know if I want that just to be my tagline?
- 2:20Speaker 7: And then ready it was hand to the heavens. And
- 2:25Speaker 7: many of you have been in my conference room. There
- 2:28Speaker 7: is a wall that they have done over the years
- 2:31Speaker 7: in the history of the city of Charleston. I didn't
- 2:33Speaker 7: know this, but in the conference room it has sixteen
- 2:36Speaker 7: by twenty pictures of every single mayor in the history
- 2:40Speaker 7: of our city. And literally my first age job. They said,
- 2:44Speaker 7: you have a sixteen by twenty photo and I was like,
- 2:45Speaker 7: you mean, like in my back pocket, you only sixteen
- 2:47Speaker 7: by twenty photos I have of my children literally, not
- 2:51Speaker 7: even my husband, you know, my children. They said, well,
- 2:54Speaker 7: you need one of you, and they put it up
- 2:56Speaker 7: and they put me in the middle. But I didn't
- 2:57Speaker 7: realize we were supposed to give in black whites. It
- 2:59Speaker 7: was in color. And so there's a wall in the
- 3:03Speaker 7: mayor's office that has a picture of every single one
- 3:05Speaker 7: and it is it is now striking to look at
- 3:09Speaker 7: and every single person I have who comes and it
- 3:11Speaker 7: has been seven years without fail, carl people walk in
- 3:15Speaker 7: the room and they say, oh wow, huh. And so
- 3:20Speaker 7: it doesn't have I mean, it says little to do
- 3:23Speaker 7: about me and everything to do about the city. That
- 3:25Speaker 7: they said, hey, wait a minute, we want a female
- 3:28Speaker 7: in office. There had to have been something, and I
- 3:30Speaker 7: think it whether it be the things that I said
- 3:34Speaker 7: or the things that we did during the campaign. But
- 3:38Speaker 7: I always like to know that I am proud of
- 3:41Speaker 7: being the first, and I am proud that that is
- 3:43Speaker 7: my tagline. And I am thrilled to this day when
- 3:46Speaker 7: people say it, because dads bring up their little girls
- 3:48Speaker 7: to me all the time and say, can I get
- 3:51Speaker 7: a picture with my girls with you? And that is special.
- 3:54Speaker 7: It still gives me chill bumps to this day.
- 3:56Speaker 8: And not only the first. And I'm not saying it's
- 3:59Speaker 8: the buddy up because we're friends, but also.
- 4:01Speaker 7: You can battle them up. It's been a long day.
- 4:03Speaker 8: That's a long day, but also one of the most effective.
- 4:06Speaker 8: And I think that again, when we look at the
- 4:08Speaker 8: city of Charleston, we look at what it was in
- 4:11Speaker 8: twenty thirteen, fourteen, fifteen, and then when we look at
- 4:14Speaker 8: it now, it's not only a downtown representative of a
- 4:18Speaker 8: capital city, but it has become the downtown of West Virginia.
- 4:23Speaker 8: In addition to you know, the amazing events that are
- 4:27Speaker 8: happening in the city that we're here to talk about today, Let's.
- 4:32Speaker 6: Just get right to it. So we have the USA
- 4:35Speaker 6: Cycling Championships here in Charleston, they're slated to continue mayor
- 4:40Speaker 6: in Charleston through twenty twenty eight. Is that correct? Okay, So,
- 4:44Speaker 6: which that includes Olympic qualifiers. What economic impact do you
- 4:49Speaker 6: expect the races to have this year and beyond that?
- 4:53Speaker 7: Yeah, for sure. So if we just take a quick
- 4:56Speaker 7: look back, we're in a three year of a five
- 4:58Speaker 7: year contract with USA Side and Pro Road to host
- 5:01Speaker 7: the Pro Road National Championships, and so just a quick
- 5:04Speaker 7: look back, it was close to a seven million dollar
- 5:08Speaker 7: economic impact just for last year. I mean it was
- 5:13Speaker 7: and again real, real, real, real the first year we
- 5:16Speaker 7: had it, even when we went out to bid on this,
- 5:19Speaker 7: I feel confident that I feel confident that even the CVB,
- 5:25Speaker 7: Tim Brady and others went, you know what, I think,
- 5:28Speaker 7: we know what we're doing here, and we bid out
- 5:30Speaker 7: and we know what this is going to be. We
- 5:31Speaker 7: saw the videos, we had done research on it. In
- 5:34Speaker 7: the first year, I didn't know what it would mean.
- 5:38Speaker 7: And so when I say seven million dollar impact, that
- 5:40Speaker 7: sounds impressive economic impact and it is right. Hotels, shops, restaurants,
- 5:45Speaker 7: they're flooded with people. They run out of food, folks,
- 5:48Speaker 7: which is great, great to have them run out of inventory.
- 5:52Speaker 7: I can't pay for the national and international attention that
- 5:56Speaker 7: we get. I can't afford to pay for the level
- 5:59Speaker 7: of recognition that we get when you see the downtown
- 6:03Speaker 7: city streets on international programming and national programming that we
- 6:08Speaker 7: are a bike city, that we are a city that
- 6:10Speaker 7: is welcoming, and that we can host super important here,
- 6:15Speaker 7: top level Olympic athletes in an Olympic style event. It is.
- 6:21Speaker 7: It's a lot of hard work, it's a lot of money.
- 6:24Speaker 7: It's a lot of sponsorship dollars invested in this. Listen,
- 6:28Speaker 7: it's a lot of city worker talks, always staying to
- 6:30Speaker 7: the delegate, our street crews, our refuse crews, police fire ems,
- 6:34Speaker 7: parking res My golly, they were out there early this
- 6:37Speaker 7: morning before the sun came up. And so it is
- 6:39Speaker 7: a lot of input. But what we get in return
- 6:43Speaker 7: is something that you know, we put on a piece
- 6:45Speaker 7: of paper. It's seven million economic return. It's much more
- 6:47Speaker 7: than that.
- 6:48Speaker 8: Now. Now, last year when we had this, or the
- 6:50Speaker 8: last time we did have it, it was an Olympic qualifier.
- 6:53Speaker 8: So just to put that in perspective, that's international event.
- 6:56Speaker 3: That's just not us.
- 6:58Speaker 8: It's not just American, right, are even local So for
- 7:01Speaker 8: this year's race, happening this weekend.
- 7:03Speaker 7: Correct, that's right, it's happening right now. So happened this morning,
- 7:06Speaker 7: happened this morning.
- 7:07Speaker 8: So what what are they qualifying for the Olympics? Is
- 7:10Speaker 8: the World Championships. What's the significance or impact of.
- 7:14Speaker 7: Yeah, and so what is so significant about this is
- 7:18Speaker 7: if you watched the Paris Olympics and you watched the
- 7:22Speaker 7: cycling you saw Kristin Faulkner, who was here in Charleston,
- 7:27Speaker 7: West Virginia, win gold, and talk about take your breath away.
- 7:33Speaker 7: We were screaming at the television much like some of
- 7:36Speaker 7: our w baseball fans are right now. Please let's go
- 7:41Speaker 7: because she got there through here. To get to the Olympics,
- 7:46Speaker 7: you come through Charleston, West Virginia. And so the folks
- 7:50Speaker 7: that you're seeing now, including some of the world's best
- 7:54Speaker 7: cycling athletes, are competing for a chance, some of them
- 7:58Speaker 7: to race in LA in twenty eight. So they're practicing.
- 8:03Speaker 7: They're practicing now. As a matter of fact, this poor
- 8:05Speaker 7: young rider last night, I too, carl As you were
- 8:08Speaker 7: coming home late, I too was coming home late, and
- 8:12Speaker 7: I saw him. He was in his glow gear on
- 8:16Speaker 7: his bike peddling up and pedaling up one of our
- 8:19Speaker 7: very very steep hills here in the city of Charleston,
- 8:22Speaker 7: and I got into the other lane. I slowed down.
- 8:24Speaker 7: I wound out my window and very carefully because I
- 8:26Speaker 7: didn't want to scare him. I said, thank you for
- 8:28Speaker 7: being here. We love having you. And he said, I
- 8:32Speaker 7: love being here, Thanks for having us. This is great.
- 8:34Speaker 7: He could say all of that while going up. This
- 8:36Speaker 7: is the tallest devil. Now you're know right now. The parents,
- 8:40Speaker 7: the athletes, the business owners, the spectators, they love like
- 8:47Speaker 7: this because it shows the quality of life that we
- 8:49Speaker 7: have here in West Virginia. It shows who we are.
- 8:53Speaker 7: Our airbnbs are filled, our host family families from across
- 8:57Speaker 7: West Virginia say, hey, listen, my kids are in school,
- 9:00Speaker 7: got empty bedrooms. Do you want anybody to stay? Because cyclists,
- 9:03Speaker 7: I have learned, they sleep with their bikes. And I'm
- 9:07Speaker 7: not trying to be funny, like their bikes are in
- 9:09Speaker 7: their room. They're fixing them there before they go to bed.
- 9:12Speaker 7: They're on them. First thing they do in the morning,
- 9:15Speaker 7: they're on them. And so it is. It is comforting.
- 9:18Speaker 7: Plus they're extremely expensive.
- 9:21Speaker 3: Those cars. Yeah, yeah, it's.
- 9:23Speaker 7: Extremely expensive, and so we've we've learned a lot, for sure.
- 9:30Speaker 7: But I'll say, Lisa, it is the dollars and cents
- 9:32Speaker 7: are incredibly important, and really it's incredibly important for our image,
- 9:36Speaker 7: our images of capital city and for the whole Mountain state. Really,
- 9:40Speaker 7: have you.
- 9:40Speaker 5: Had a personal experience, let's say, with one of the
- 9:44Speaker 5: cyclists who that you had a like a i'll say,
- 9:50Speaker 5: somewhat of a lengthy conversation with and how proud they
- 9:55Speaker 5: were to be here and exciting. And I know you
- 9:57Speaker 5: touched on that a little bit, but I think it's
- 9:59Speaker 5: really really the reality of someone coming from who knows where,
- 10:03Speaker 5: coming to hear Charleston, West Virginia and loving everything about it.
- 10:10Speaker 3: How does that? How does that work for you?
- 10:12Speaker 7: Well, I'll go I'll go backwards before I go forwards.
- 10:15Speaker 7: Christ And Faulkner Olympic gred medalist. She I saw her
- 10:21Speaker 7: and last year and she had Olympic rings on her arm.
- 10:26Speaker 7: She said, I don't have tattoos. I don't do tattoos,
- 10:28Speaker 7: but I did this, and we were like smart girl,
- 10:31Speaker 7: that's right. I would have done that, like maybe on
- 10:34Speaker 7: my forehead, but I appreciate your modest I got these
- 10:37Speaker 7: here what I mean that just kind of makes you
- 10:41Speaker 7: get a little choked up. But it is it is
- 10:44Speaker 7: the families of the cyclists that really thrilled me. You know,
- 10:49Speaker 7: you know this about me, guys, I'm a mayor, but
- 10:51Speaker 7: I'm a mom first. And so when I'm standing there
- 10:53Speaker 7: and I'm watching the moms and dads and grandparents and
- 10:55Speaker 7: aunts and nichos because by the way, they're coming with
- 10:58Speaker 7: all of those folks. Yes, because sometimes parents are working.
- 11:00Speaker 7: I can't go, but you're going with so and so,
- 11:02Speaker 7: or you're going with your coach. And we're standing there
- 11:04Speaker 7: watching them and listening to them say. People are almost
- 11:09Speaker 7: obnoxious about it, falling all over themselves. What do you need?
- 11:12Speaker 7: Can I get you a sandwich? How about another drink?
- 11:14Speaker 7: That's just who we are, you know that, you know
- 11:17Speaker 7: that in our own neighborhoods, that's how people act. I
- 11:21Speaker 7: don't think that we recognize in West Virginia what is
- 11:26Speaker 7: happening out there, because when people come here, they just
- 11:28Speaker 7: say all the time, I don't know this lady just
- 11:30Speaker 7: literally invited me to her house for supper. I'm like, oh,
- 11:32Speaker 7: it's Lisa, You're fine. Yeah, like legit, like legit real
- 11:37Speaker 7: stories and most important we talk about relationships. And so
- 11:41Speaker 7: how did you get us? Say cycling?
- 11:44Speaker 6: This is huge?
- 11:45Speaker 7: You know how you get it? You got it because
- 11:48Speaker 7: we went out after table tennis and Tim Brady and
- 11:52Speaker 7: the CVB got table tennis. Y'all ever talk about table tennis? No,
- 11:55Speaker 7: you know what table tennis was for US? Twenty different
- 11:58Speaker 7: countries and athletes for three weeks. I'm talking about it.
- 12:02Speaker 7: Why because that's big money for these athletes to be
- 12:05Speaker 7: here for three weeks. You got a great connection. The
- 12:09Speaker 7: USA Sports said to USA Men's Volleyball, Hey, Charleston, West Virginia,
- 12:14Speaker 7: you might want to take a look at them because
- 12:16Speaker 7: I know you've been traveling all over parts of the country.
- 12:18Speaker 7: It's really expensive on transportation. By the way, Men's volleyball
- 12:21Speaker 7: the year before we got them spent one hundred thousand
- 12:24Speaker 7: dollars in their transportation. You know what we spent when
- 12:27Speaker 7: we got them. Nothing. And that's how you pitch it.
- 12:29Speaker 7: You come here, let us show you what we can
- 12:31Speaker 7: do because we will host you in the you know
- 12:35Speaker 7: the two hotels that adjoined the Colosseuman Convention Center, and
- 12:38Speaker 7: we're going to have this for you downtown. It's walkable
- 12:41Speaker 7: it's bikable. You don't have to do anything. So it
- 12:43Speaker 7: is also about the cost of doing business here, which
- 12:46Speaker 7: is good. And then USA Volleyball turned into USA Cycling
- 12:52Speaker 7: and then that relationship. First they said they were great again.
- 12:55Speaker 7: Credit where credit is due, the businesses, the supporters, the
- 12:59Speaker 7: CBB members, the city team, you can do it. They
- 13:02Speaker 7: can rise to the level of this type of event
- 13:07Speaker 7: planning an elite athlete event where you're hosting folks that
- 13:13Speaker 7: you know what a you know what feeding stations are,
- 13:16Speaker 7: and you know how to care for athletes who fall.
- 13:20Speaker 7: Shout out to CEMC. Wow, those folks are with us
- 13:26Speaker 7: and our EMS crews. Because by the way, this is
- 13:30Speaker 7: also something I learned in cycling. You can fall yeah, yes,
- 13:34Speaker 7: off of your bike going fifty miles an hour.
- 13:38Speaker 8: And that's one thing I wanted to touch on is that
- 13:41Speaker 8: if you have not seen these elite athletes ride their bikes,
- 13:46Speaker 8: I mean talking about on a curve, yeah, I mean
- 13:49Speaker 8: the bike is literally probably at I would say about,
- 13:52Speaker 8: you know, sixty seventy degree lean.
- 13:56Speaker 3: It is amazing to watch.
- 13:58Speaker 8: We talk about all the other things as far as
- 13:59Speaker 8: the economic impact and all, you know, all these other things,
- 14:02Speaker 8: but when it comes down to it. This is an
- 14:04Speaker 8: event in which you have to see for yourself. It's
- 14:08Speaker 8: one thing seeing in on TV, but if you're downtown.
- 14:10Speaker 8: I was downtown watching them like just zoom by me.
- 14:14Speaker 8: It's it's really amazing the level of athleticism that it
- 14:18Speaker 8: takes to you know, maneuver that bike through you know
- 14:21Speaker 8: the type of terrain, whether they talk about heels or
- 14:23Speaker 8: blocks or whatever.
- 14:24Speaker 7: And we literally saw athletes fall off their bike, take
- 14:28Speaker 7: their sorry skin from their knee to their ankle off,
- 14:31Speaker 7: get back on that bike and go another ten miles
- 14:34Speaker 7: as fast as they can uphill.
- 14:36Speaker 3: It's insane amazing.
- 14:38Speaker 5: And you know, every I think every sport, no matter
- 14:42Speaker 5: what it is, and I think people lock into football, basketball, baseball,
- 14:46Speaker 5: and they you know, all the guy who's playing herd,
- 14:49Speaker 5: he's wrapped up and he's going to play hurt. But
- 14:53Speaker 5: for the bikers, that moment is now, you know, like
- 14:58Speaker 5: you're off your bike, you you hurt something, you're thinking
- 15:02Speaker 5: wrapping it up and go.
- 15:04Speaker 3: It's not even really a wrap up.
- 15:05Speaker 5: It's get on the bike and keep going and thinking
- 15:07Speaker 5: about nothing more than winning. I mean, that's the unique
- 15:12Speaker 5: side of the mindset of those athletes.
- 15:15Speaker 3: Themselves.
- 15:16Speaker 7: So something we started a couple of years ago when
- 15:18Speaker 7: we began this relationship with USA Cycling is to inspire.
- 15:23Speaker 7: You've got to see it to be it right, and
- 15:25Speaker 7: so we wanted to make sure that we were contributing
- 15:28Speaker 7: in that way. And so every year we give away
- 15:31Speaker 7: at least one hundred bicycles Charleston Sternwell Regatta. They're awesome
- 15:35Speaker 7: because and it is such a fun event to watch
- 15:38Speaker 7: somebody get on their princess bike, first bike she's ever had.
- 15:42Speaker 7: Here she gets on our little princess bike and those
- 15:44Speaker 7: Olympic athletes pushing them along the way, or the teenager
- 15:48Speaker 7: who's never had a bike or outgrew that bike and
- 15:50Speaker 7: couldn't get another bike. It's one thing that I think
- 15:53Speaker 7: that we do really well. And we're going to do
- 15:54Speaker 7: it during our Juneteenth ceremony down at City Center at
- 15:57Speaker 7: Slack Plaza. We're going to give away bikes as well
- 16:00Speaker 7: there and at Warts. Because you you guys know this
- 16:05Speaker 7: better than I do. How many people are going to
- 16:07Speaker 7: be Olympic level athletes. How many people are going to
- 16:10Speaker 7: play in the NFL, How many people are going to
- 16:11Speaker 7: play in the NBA? Probably not many. We know we
- 16:14Speaker 7: obviously know some, but but what is so incredible about
- 16:18Speaker 7: having an opportunity to watch somebody do this? You're into
- 16:22Speaker 7: it now too, aren't you? You're inspired? What is that
- 16:25Speaker 7: that's different? It's not basketball, baseball, football, soccer. It's something different.
- 16:30Speaker 7: And if I'm not good at those things, am I
- 16:32Speaker 7: good at this? And to give it a try? It's
- 16:35Speaker 7: it is like our skate park. And I know this
- 16:38Speaker 7: is I'm going way off, carl where's the not at all?
- 16:42Speaker 7: You're gonna rip me out of my seat. But if
- 16:45Speaker 7: we're talking about athletics, and I played sports my entire life.
- 16:48Speaker 7: I played in every single sport in high school, including
- 16:51Speaker 7: on the men's golf team. But not everybody wants to
- 16:53Speaker 7: not everybody's good at it, and we have to make
- 16:55Speaker 7: sure that we are, as a city and a state,
- 16:57Speaker 7: providing opportunities for kids. You want to buy, that's cool too.
- 17:01Speaker 7: You want to skateboard, that's cool too. And I would
- 17:03Speaker 7: have never thought in my wildest dreams that our busiest
- 17:07Speaker 7: park in the city of Charleston would be our skateboarding park.
- 17:11Speaker 7: But it is because those kids didn't have a place
- 17:13Speaker 7: to go until we build it for them. And it
- 17:16Speaker 7: is packed and by the way, it's the kids who
- 17:18Speaker 7: were skateboarding and other kids were like, yeah, I'm not
- 17:21Speaker 7: good at football, I'm not good at basketball, but I'm
- 17:24Speaker 7: not bad at this. This is okay. And so giving
- 17:27Speaker 7: people an opportunity to try something that they normally.
- 17:32Speaker 5: Well, player, baseball, whatever, maybe that ends up being their thing,
- 17:38Speaker 5: you know. So you know that's but all that's great,
- 17:41Speaker 5: you know, and I think that you know, it's something
- 17:45Speaker 5: that I think has to spread, keep continuous, continuously spread
- 17:50Speaker 5: all over the state and make it great and let
- 17:55Speaker 5: people know. So that's one again, one of the reasons
- 17:57Speaker 5: why we have you on, just to make sure people
- 17:59Speaker 5: here hear this and know that it is available.
- 18:02Speaker 6: Yeah, and so Mayor I just wanted to go back.
- 18:05Speaker 6: You kind of touched on this a moment ago. But
- 18:08Speaker 6: the logistics of having this happen in our city and
- 18:12Speaker 6: the outlying parts of the city, you know, how do
- 18:16Speaker 6: you manage that with you know, you've got events like
- 18:18Speaker 6: Live on the Levee coming up, you mentioned, you know,
- 18:20Speaker 6: the Juneteenth celebration and parade, we got rolls on the River,
- 18:23Speaker 6: I think, going on, how in the world do you
- 18:26Speaker 6: get this all organized and ready to go for these
- 18:29Speaker 6: bikers and still include these other special events.
- 18:33Speaker 7: We are blessed to have community members who just love
- 18:36Speaker 7: it and who are really good at it. And quite frankly,
- 18:38Speaker 7: we have a city team that's really good at it.
- 18:40Speaker 7: We are good at doing this, and it's one of
- 18:43Speaker 7: the reasons why we were able to secure USA Cycling
- 18:47Speaker 7: and we are able to host two hundred and twenty
- 18:51Speaker 7: five thousand people for the Charles Instrument. Makes me a
- 18:54Speaker 7: little worried here. I'm getting a little tickle on my
- 18:57Speaker 7: throat because that's just you know, it's just a hops
- 19:00Speaker 7: up in a jump down the road. Intense planning all
- 19:04Speaker 7: the time at nauseum, going over emergency plans, exit plans,
- 19:10Speaker 7: strategy plans of you know, those things are always everybody's
- 19:15Speaker 7: top of my tip of tongue. This I'll give you
- 19:17Speaker 7: a great example. So on I'm trying to get back
- 19:21Speaker 7: into running. Don't ask me why, but anyways, so I'm
- 19:24Speaker 7: on the boulevard the other morning at six point thirty
- 19:26Speaker 7: in the morning and here are guys with our water
- 19:29Speaker 7: buffalo doing our beautiful, beautiful shout out to the Beautification Commission.
- 19:33Speaker 7: They're doing a great job and they're watering our flowers.
- 19:36Speaker 7: And one of the guys said to me, I said, oh,
- 19:38Speaker 7: this looks so beautiful, blah blah blah. He said, yeah,
- 19:40Speaker 7: but what are we going to do during USA Cycling.
- 19:42Speaker 7: We were just talking about because the guard rails are
- 19:44Speaker 7: going to do this, and we got the map out
- 19:46Speaker 7: and we were trying to figure if the water buffalo
- 19:48Speaker 7: will go on our little four by four will go
- 19:50Speaker 7: around that. I was just like, you guys are worried
- 19:54Speaker 7: about And by the way, it was only only like
- 19:56Speaker 7: seven hanging baskets that are right there in front of
- 19:59Speaker 7: had that. Yeah, they were worried about it because they
- 20:02Speaker 7: were involved in the planning. And that's the other thing
- 20:04Speaker 7: that we do in the city. And again I'm prideful
- 20:07Speaker 7: of being I'm only one of seven hundred and thirty employees.
- 20:10Speaker 7: I got seven hundred thirty employees. I'm only one of them.
- 20:12Speaker 7: They're serious about their job, and those guys were thinking,
- 20:15Speaker 7: I'm not going to be able to do my job.
- 20:17Speaker 7: This is part of my job and I'm not going
- 20:18Speaker 7: to be able to do it. They are involved in
- 20:20Speaker 7: every planning meeting. Every single person who touches an area
- 20:25Speaker 7: of this event is part of the planning process. We
- 20:29Speaker 7: don't just send the directors. We don't just sen I
- 20:31Speaker 7: want you involved because if you're working it, we want
- 20:33Speaker 7: you to understand what's happening. And I think that's part
- 20:36Speaker 7: of it as well, when you include people in that
- 20:38Speaker 7: planning process. In addition to USA Cycling doesn't just come
- 20:42Speaker 7: in with USA Cycling. They hire professional event management and
- 20:45Speaker 7: sport management teams Medalist sports Buddy Oday. You want to
- 20:50Speaker 7: see a smooth operation, they know what they're doing, attention
- 20:54Speaker 7: to detail because that's all they do. That is all
- 20:56Speaker 7: they do. They do cycling, they do marathons, they do
- 21:00Speaker 7: they do massive events with a lot of interaction with
- 21:04Speaker 7: municipal government and they do a in state government and
- 21:07Speaker 7: they do a really good job of event management.
- 21:09Speaker 8: It's always impressive and I think a lot of people
- 21:11Speaker 8: don't understand that that part of it when you talk
- 21:14Speaker 8: about the planning of it, because you have to be meticulous,
- 21:17Speaker 8: particularly when it comes to an Olympic qualifier. Right, So,
- 21:20Speaker 8: when USA Cycling came and they actually got to do
- 21:23Speaker 8: a site visit of the city, how much did our
- 21:27Speaker 8: terrain come into play Because we are hilly city. We
- 21:30Speaker 8: have hills going up, going down, and again, if you
- 21:32Speaker 8: haven't seen somebody go up a ninety degree angle and
- 21:36Speaker 8: then come back down.
- 21:37Speaker 3: I would advise you to do it with ay with curves.
- 21:41Speaker 6: So if they want to see that, they should go
- 21:43Speaker 6: to Bridge Road Bike Bash on Sunday. That is the
- 21:46Speaker 6: best place to see the last races.
- 21:48Speaker 3: Amazing. So okay, so what was their asnes?
- 21:53Speaker 7: Yeah, so we were not kidding. We went and I
- 21:55Speaker 7: looked back at other races, and I think part of
- 21:58Speaker 7: it is when they came, they said, we had just
- 22:00Speaker 7: gotten done with doing a big paving cycle, and I
- 22:04Speaker 7: was trying to be cute and clever and cute, and
- 22:07Speaker 7: maybe I was a little bit when I watched. When
- 22:10Speaker 7: I watched their past races and other cities, I looked
- 22:13Speaker 7: at their planning designs and processes, and they had this
- 22:17Speaker 7: section where we literally watch people and their municipal team
- 22:21Speaker 7: turn their greats because you know, the slats go this way,
- 22:24Speaker 7: but during the races, you know they have to go
- 22:26Speaker 7: this way because I don't want you're tire in it.
- 22:28Speaker 7: So when I say attention to detail, buddy, I mean
- 22:31Speaker 7: attention attention to detail, and so I just bring that up.
- 22:34Speaker 7: Is just another highlight of the point of it's all
- 22:38Speaker 7: hands on deck. But when they came in and saw
- 22:40Speaker 7: that we were going to do paving a new another
- 22:42Speaker 7: new round of paving, infrastructure is important and spending money
- 22:47Speaker 7: on infrastructure because they said, honestly, there's this area in
- 22:51Speaker 7: this area we've got to redo. We're a little concerned
- 22:53Speaker 7: about this. Maybe we've been redoing smooth. Other than that,
- 22:55Speaker 7: it's totally great, We're good to go. Okay. That put
- 22:58Speaker 7: us to the top of the list. And then being
- 23:00Speaker 7: intimately engaged in involved and understanding what they needed from
- 23:04Speaker 7: us EMS, road crews, traffic and blocking because let me
- 23:09Speaker 7: just say this, we all love it. We love it,
- 23:12Speaker 7: we think it is it is absolutely what the city needs.
- 23:16Speaker 7: And in my background, I really do and I am passionate,
- 23:20Speaker 7: passionate about events. It is not just an event. It
- 23:24Speaker 7: is about business development for the city of Charleston, is
- 23:28Speaker 7: about true growth. It just simply is. But it also
- 23:32Speaker 7: puts people out. People are going to be delayed a
- 23:34Speaker 7: little bit here and there. People are not gonna you know,
- 23:37Speaker 7: you're going to be at that stop light as those racers.
- 23:39Speaker 7: It's a roll enclosure. You're going to wait a minute
- 23:41Speaker 7: or two. And so that also is hard for us
- 23:45Speaker 7: to manage as well. When you talk about big events
- 23:47Speaker 7: like this, we're all standing there in our big right
- 23:50Speaker 7: and red and blue and cheering, cheering, But there are
- 23:52Speaker 7: people that are late for work, and so we also
- 23:54Speaker 7: have to manage expectations about how quickly you're going to
- 23:57Speaker 7: get in and out of certain areas. So it's a
- 24:02Speaker 7: lot about managing that and knowing that ahead of time
- 24:05Speaker 7: and working with the cruise to say, we know how
- 24:07Speaker 7: great this is, but we also know that. You know,
- 24:10Speaker 7: I think Lightning McQueen said, Robin is racing. Isn't that
- 24:12Speaker 7: what that little car said, robs racing?
- 24:16Speaker 6: I love that, right?
- 24:17Speaker 7: Did you say that a little part?
- 24:19Speaker 5: Well, we won't let you get out of here, we don't.
- 24:22Speaker 5: We don't want to be we don't want to take
- 24:24Speaker 5: you too long. But we appreciate every time that you come.
- 24:29Speaker 5: So I'm sure you will be back again for us.
- 24:31Speaker 7: I love to a sports show. It just gets me
- 24:33Speaker 7: so excited every time I go. You guys are so
- 24:35Speaker 7: special and thank you so much. Listen to appreciate, appreciate you.

- 25:54Speaker 4: probably presented by Attorney Frank Walker, Real talk, real experience,
- 25:59Speaker 4: real results, Frank Walker Law dot com. Let that conversation
- 26:03Speaker 4: begin on Let's Talk.
- 26:05Speaker 10: Shaking hands is what you do when you're in the
- 26:08Speaker 10: little leagues, when you're in JV, when you're trying to
- 26:11Speaker 10: teach about you know, hey, treat the game the right way.
- 26:14Speaker 10: I don't believe that NBA players or professional athletes have
- 26:18Speaker 10: to shake hands. Why why why do I have to
- 26:22Speaker 10: do that?
- 26:22Speaker 3: I'll answer both for y'all, will y'all fins. No.
- 26:24Speaker 10: I think this is a real thing because we see
- 26:25Speaker 10: it all the time in college.
- 26:26Speaker 3: Back on, they didn't shake hands. They don't respect the game.
- 26:29Speaker 10: Why why do I need to shake your hands?
- 26:30Speaker 7: That's part of the rule.
- 26:35Speaker 6: I don't know if that's what does here's my thing.
- 26:38Speaker 10: Well, I don't have to do it because everybody does it,
- 26:41Speaker 10: like nobody did make it a rule.
- 26:43Speaker 3: I can respect Stephen A. Smith, and when we're done.
- 26:45Speaker 10: I don't need to adapt it before our golf set.
- 26:47Speaker 3: I'm here to debate him.
- 26:49Speaker 10: I'm trying to win a debate, and I think it's
- 26:51Speaker 10: the same way with the NBA. I get when Isaiah
- 26:53Speaker 10: Thomas and all this thing happened back in the day,
- 26:56Speaker 10: but I think it's one of the worst rules for
- 26:58Speaker 10: professional sports that I have to show sportsmanship and shake
- 27:03Speaker 10: your hand after you beating me in a moment where
- 27:06Speaker 10: maybe I don't want to shake your hand.
- 27:07Speaker 3: Maybe I don't like you. I don't need to like you.
- 27:10Speaker 3: I don't get paid to like you.
- 27:11Speaker 10: I get paid to compete against you to win championships.
- 27:15Speaker 10: So there's no prerequis hit that says, when the game's over,
- 27:17Speaker 10: I need to say, hey, way to.
- 27:18Speaker 3: Kick my ass.
- 27:19Speaker 10: No, I could take my ass home and I can say,
- 27:21Speaker 10: you know, I'll see you next time I see it.
- 27:23Speaker 3: When I seen you, I'm gonna come.
- 27:25Speaker 10: For you again. I think it's a bigger topic. I
- 27:27Speaker 10: think that we're missing a shaking.
- 27:29Speaker 6: Hands is okay. So that was our friend Jay Williams
- 27:34Speaker 6: on Steven A. Smith's show, and he was just giving
- 27:38Speaker 6: us his opinion of the I want to call it
- 27:44Speaker 6: handshakegate is what I want to come but anyway, he's
- 27:49Speaker 6: referring to, of course, the championship game, the NBA Championship
- 27:52Speaker 6: game between the Spurs and the Knicks, and the Spurs
- 27:55Speaker 6: refused to shake hands.
- 27:57Speaker 3: With specifically victory.
- 28:00Speaker 6: Specifically him. So you two, coming from sports and football backgrounds,
- 28:07Speaker 6: what is your opinion of Jay Williams and his thoughts.
- 28:11Speaker 8: Well, look again, shout out to the Knicks for winning
- 28:14Speaker 8: the championship. I think it's gonna be good for basketball
- 28:16Speaker 8: that they won. I don't have a problem with it
- 28:20Speaker 8: what he said, and in fact, I love it. I
- 28:22Speaker 8: think that, particularly like in professional sports, it's too many friends,
- 28:27Speaker 8: Like we don't need to be friends. Create drama, create
- 28:29Speaker 8: storylines that are on the court, that are basketball specific,
- 28:33Speaker 8: that relate to rivalries and different things of that nature.
- 28:37Speaker 8: You don't have to shake somebody's hands. I'm sure there's
- 28:40Speaker 8: always a level of respect there. These guys a professional athlete.
- 28:43Speaker 8: They're competing against one another, and I don't want everybody
- 28:46Speaker 8: to be friends. It was fun to watch the Detroit
- 28:49Speaker 8: Pistons in the late eighties hate everybody. It was so
- 28:53Speaker 8: fun to do that. Now again, I don't think you
- 28:55Speaker 8: should be pout and I don't think you do. Like
- 28:57Speaker 8: what Cam Newton did in the Super Bowl. You know,
- 29:00Speaker 8: a couple of years back, you don't pal, you face
- 29:02Speaker 8: the meeting, you go you know we did this, we
- 29:04Speaker 8: didn't do that, and then you go home. But I
- 29:06Speaker 8: like the rivalry. I like that he's not mister friendly
- 29:09Speaker 8: because again, we're gonna sit up here complain about Lebron James.
- 29:13Speaker 8: We do this we do that on this show. All
- 29:14Speaker 8: he messed the league up, he mixed the competition up.
- 29:17Speaker 8: But then we have sort of the anticity of that,
- 29:20Speaker 8: we have the opposite of that. Who is by all
- 29:25Speaker 8: in counts is going to be a great player. And
- 29:26Speaker 8: there's a there's a dog mentality, and sometimes it goes dark.
- 29:30Speaker 3: And he got dark. And I love it, Carl, I
- 29:34Speaker 3: didn't know. I didn't know.
- 29:36Speaker 6: You can I want you to go first.
- 29:38Speaker 5: All right, let me let me first say this. I
- 29:45Speaker 5: cannot believe that I heard what I heard come out
- 29:48Speaker 5: of your mouth.
- 29:48Speaker 3: Of it. I just I just can't imagine that.
- 29:52Speaker 5: And and let me be clear, playing for me at
- 29:57Speaker 5: West Virginia State, you was gonna shake hands, and I
- 29:59Speaker 5: thought was the dumbest thad and and and and in
- 30:03Speaker 5: that and in that, because here's here's the here's the
- 30:07Speaker 5: difference in what sports really is, and especially at the
- 30:12Speaker 5: what I'm gonna say, at the youngest levels, it is
- 30:17Speaker 5: just fun. But we're talking about the highest I'm gonna
- 30:21Speaker 5: get there.
- 30:22Speaker 3: I'm gonna get there. I'm gonna get there.
- 30:25Speaker 5: So as you grow up and as you change from
- 30:30Speaker 5: youth football to middle school, there's a there is a
- 30:33Speaker 5: respect for your opponent, whether you like. I don't have
- 30:37Speaker 5: to like you on that team, but I have to
- 30:40Speaker 5: have a respect because I know you're good. So when
- 30:43Speaker 5: the game is over, we've been out there going at
- 30:46Speaker 5: it as hard as we possibly can. Whoever wins, that's
- 30:51Speaker 5: a that's a done deal. But the respect in which
- 30:56Speaker 5: I want to give you because of your skill set.
- 31:00Speaker 5: I show that in that handshake. There are guys who
- 31:03Speaker 5: I did not like that would be on another team,
- 31:06Speaker 5: but when the game was over, I'm still shaking their
- 31:08Speaker 5: hand because of the respect of who they are and
- 31:11Speaker 5: and the game itself.
- 31:13Speaker 8: But you, but your generation can't complain. On one hand,
- 31:17Speaker 8: all guys are too friendly. They're not taking it.
- 31:20Speaker 3: But you ain't ever hurt me with y'all.
- 31:21Speaker 8: Y'all can plain on I'm saying, not you specifically, your generation.
- 31:24Speaker 8: Y'all can play on one hand. But then when you
- 31:27Speaker 8: have a guy who's probably the ilk of your generation,
- 31:30Speaker 8: who's more similar far as mentality, then you can play
- 31:34Speaker 8: on that hand.
- 31:34Speaker 5: If not, okay, again, let's make clear that's not me
- 31:38Speaker 5: but Sterly Sharp I'm playing against him. We are like,
- 31:44Speaker 5: at at best, great buddies on the field. At the
- 31:48Speaker 5: same time, laughing and joking, but playing at at at
- 31:52Speaker 5: the highest level possible, right And that touchdown that he
- 31:58Speaker 5: gets on me, what makes that a little bit less
- 32:03Speaker 5: is this because the respect that I have for him.
- 32:05Speaker 5: So when the game is over, I have no problem
- 32:09Speaker 5: shaking his hand and he and and I think, I
- 32:12Speaker 5: think sports is not in a space to where winning
- 32:20Speaker 5: games is the most important thing that's ever going to happen.
- 32:24Speaker 5: Your life is gonna be something bigger and outside of
- 32:28Speaker 5: that space. And if you don't understand how to manage that,
- 32:33Speaker 5: because you're gonna have, you're gonna be There's no chances
- 32:36Speaker 5: that you're gonna go through life and not face somebody
- 32:39Speaker 5: that you maybe doesn't don't like.
- 32:41Speaker 3: And you're gonna have to.
- 32:41Speaker 5: You're gonna have to reach out and touch that, shake
- 32:43Speaker 5: their hand and do that. Sports helps you with that.
- 32:49Speaker 5: In the worst time, we lose the NFC Championship game,
- 32:53Speaker 5: but I have no problem walking across the field shaking
- 33:00Speaker 5: a guy's hand who beat me in that game because
- 33:03Speaker 5: I respect him and he respects me, And to me,
- 33:08Speaker 5: that's it's a disrespect for the opponent that you're playing
- 33:12Speaker 5: or the And I won't even say that, yes.
- 33:17Speaker 3: I don't. I don't, I don't know. I just don't
- 33:19Speaker 3: buy that.
- 33:20Speaker 8: Again, go ahead, I'm sorry, I'm just saying like again,
- 33:24Speaker 8: we talk about all these things. We talk about the Lebron's,
- 33:26Speaker 8: we talk about athletes being too friendly, we talk about
- 33:29Speaker 8: all the guys swapping jerseys and your general I'm not
- 33:32Speaker 8: saying you specifically, but your generation has so much to
- 33:35Speaker 8: say about that, how they hated the guys aren't serious,
- 33:38Speaker 8: they don't take it, they don't have passion of the game.
- 33:40Speaker 8: Then we see somebody who has a deep passion for
- 33:43Speaker 8: the game, and again, at that level, it is about winning.
- 33:46Speaker 8: It's not all these life lessons. These are professional athletes.
- 33:49Speaker 8: It's about winning and losing. It's about championships. It's about
- 33:52Speaker 8: he's trying to assert himself to be in the greatest
- 33:55Speaker 8: of all time conversation. That's the type of mentality that
- 33:58Speaker 8: Winby has. And I love it. I love the do
- 34:01Speaker 8: you love the dirty play? I love it all because
- 34:04Speaker 8: we need that in sports because everything.
- 34:11Speaker 6: Okay, watch me, okay, okay, watch let me. Let me
- 34:18Speaker 6: just throw my two cents in. Guys, if you don't care,
- 34:20Speaker 6: I'm gonna I'm gonna play. I'm going to look at
- 34:22Speaker 6: both sides here. I feel like I feel like the
- 34:24Speaker 6: point that Jay Williams is making or trying to make,
- 34:26Speaker 6: is when it comes to those handshakes, you know, it
- 34:30Speaker 6: should be authentic versus just ritual. So you know, you know,
- 34:35Speaker 6: everybody shakes hands and you do it. You know that
- 34:38Speaker 6: that's just part of finishing a game. But but it
- 34:42Speaker 6: should should mean something. I think that's what he's trying
- 34:44Speaker 6: to say. You know that it's not just something that
- 34:47Speaker 6: you do, you should mean it. But in my opinion,
- 34:50Speaker 6: you know, as a professional athlete, I get that we
- 34:53Speaker 6: want the competition, we want the ribberry, we want the
- 34:56Speaker 6: you know, the the heated you know, the back of fourth.
- 35:00Speaker 6: But but I think the bigger picture of professional sports
- 35:05Speaker 6: is we're setting an example for you, and I think
- 35:07Speaker 6: we need to model grace in defeat. You can play
- 35:11Speaker 6: as hard and as dirty and mean as you like
- 35:14Speaker 6: during the game, but after the game, you show that
- 35:16Speaker 6: you know you're you're showing like like Carl said, I'm
- 35:19Speaker 6: team Carl tonight. So I hope I don't get fired tonight.
- 35:21Speaker 6: I hope tonight I get just for tonight, but just
- 35:25Speaker 6: for tonight, Hollis. But I do feel like you know,
- 35:29Speaker 6: the NBA does not have like a mandated structured handshake tradition.
- 35:35Speaker 6: It's not something that they have to do, so it's
- 35:37Speaker 6: a it's a personal choice. But I also think that
- 35:39Speaker 6: it can hurt hurt a player's reputation. I mean, I
- 35:42Speaker 6: think that sometimes when you you know, it kind of
- 35:44Speaker 6: makes you look like that person that is not uh,
- 35:47Speaker 6: you're more self centered and more solo and not a
- 35:50Speaker 6: team player in my opinion.
- 35:52Speaker 8: In my opinion, but player handshake to the other team. Again,
- 35:58Speaker 8: we're talking about out the situation in which you have
- 36:01Speaker 8: a guy. Again, when we look at sports has they
- 36:05Speaker 8: has are currently constructed, there are no more real heated
- 36:10Speaker 8: robberies in sports. And it stinks, no, no, no, But here's
- 36:15Speaker 8: what I'm saying, though, is that they're not robberies because
- 36:19Speaker 8: nobody hates each other. Now like the Bulls hated the Pistons,
- 36:24Speaker 8: Lakers hated the Celtics, and vice versa. You know what
- 36:27Speaker 8: I'm saying, The Giants hated the Niners, the Niners hated
- 36:32Speaker 8: hated the red Skins Redskins, And what I'm saying is
- 36:34Speaker 8: that but I realized that they did shake hands after
- 36:37Speaker 8: some of them did no.
- 36:38Speaker 3: No, no, no.
- 36:40Speaker 8: Back in my day, no, sometimes they did, depending on
- 36:44Speaker 8: the game, they didn't.
- 36:45Speaker 5: All we knew it. I'll make this case the Minnesota Vikings.
- 36:50Speaker 5: From the day I got there to the day I left,
- 36:53Speaker 5: we didn't win every game, and we lost against some
- 36:57Speaker 5: bright every time I lost against the Packers.
- 37:00Speaker 3: I'm mad because I.
- 37:01Speaker 5: Know, I know, I know that I got to hear
- 37:06Speaker 5: it from Sterling Rob. But you know what's gonna happen.
- 37:09Speaker 5: I know he's coming, not just him, just the whole
- 37:12Speaker 5: team is coming across and we're shaking hands. But there
- 37:15Speaker 5: are times when you have six or seven players on
- 37:19Speaker 5: opposite teams standing on the field talking after the game
- 37:23Speaker 5: because you know what what what we know? What the
- 37:26Speaker 5: when you when you start talking professional, what you know
- 37:30Speaker 5: is everybody's great, and everybody's gonna win or lose a
- 37:33Speaker 5: game when you get done, once you get once the
- 37:37Speaker 5: game gets done.
- 37:38Speaker 3: But you're not I'm not. I'm not mad at you.
- 37:41Speaker 5: I want you to be mad. Look, I'm not talking
- 37:44Speaker 5: about all that. I'm not playing about all this like
- 37:46Speaker 5: I don't have what I'm saying with you. What I'm
- 37:48Speaker 5: saying is I ain't talking about all the life lesson
- 37:50Speaker 5: I don't care about that right now I'm talking about
- 37:53Speaker 5: I want to see robberies on TV. I don't want
- 37:57Speaker 5: everybody friendly and every superstar ain't friendly. Every team versut
- 38:02Speaker 5: this team or this conference versu that conference. I want
- 38:05Speaker 5: to see heated robberies. I wanted to see the fans
- 38:07Speaker 5: have around. I was watching Winning Times about.
- 38:09Speaker 8: The Lakers, uh you know, eighty showtime, and they were
- 38:12Speaker 8: talking about situations where they were playing in the garden
- 38:15Speaker 8: in Boston and they win a game and they got
- 38:17Speaker 8: to and the fans are so heated they got to
- 38:19Speaker 8: get out there. They're rocking the bus. I want to
- 38:21Speaker 8: see passion, and we don't have that in sports them
- 38:24Speaker 8: about every everything is so corporate and everything is so clean,
- 38:27Speaker 8: and everything is so friendly.
- 38:28Speaker 3: It's okay every once in a while to have you.
- 38:31Speaker 8: Know, a villain, somebody who's who's gonna buck what's currently
- 38:35Speaker 8: going on?
- 38:35Speaker 6: And I love it, But don't you Okay, So so
- 38:39Speaker 6: let me throw this in there real quick. So do
- 38:41Speaker 6: you not agree that it is to go and shake hands.
- 38:45Speaker 6: It's a physical acknowledgment of a loss, Like you have
- 38:48Speaker 6: to look that that opponent in the eye. You know,
- 38:51Speaker 6: you have to to kind of process that this person
- 38:55Speaker 6: you know they won, you lost, and and if you
- 38:59Speaker 6: don't do that, does that kind of signal a mental thing?
- 39:01Speaker 8: The physical the physical indication of the losses the scoreboard.
- 39:05Speaker 5: You got whooped, you got whipped, and you was up
- 39:08Speaker 5: in every good and again.
- 39:09Speaker 6: It's a good will type of gesture. I mean, you don't,
- 39:12Speaker 6: you don't want to want to right, you don't wish
- 39:14Speaker 6: your will on them, And I'm sure he doesn't.
- 39:17Speaker 8: But the Spurs were up in every single game, every
- 39:20Speaker 8: single game of that series. They were up probably by
- 39:23Speaker 8: double digit at one time of the game, and they
- 39:25Speaker 8: got whooped throughout the series. That was a critical beatdown.
- 39:30Speaker 8: And I'm sure from all that they did they shake
- 39:33Speaker 8: hands prior to I don't. I mean, I don't know,
- 39:35Speaker 8: but that's it. So so I'm is they shook hands.
- 39:40Speaker 8: I've seen a game or two where they just got left.
- 39:42Speaker 8: I've seen I've seen a game some guys left, but
- 39:44Speaker 8: most of the most of the game with women be left.
- 39:46Speaker 3: Okay, that's that's him, that's his issue. It's so issue.
- 39:50Speaker 3: It's great for the sports.
- 39:52Speaker 6: Wasn't there're an issue with the w n B A
- 39:53Speaker 6: or no, no, no, was that the women's college basketball Championship.
- 39:57Speaker 6: Wasn't there an issue about coaches not shaking hands? It
- 40:01Speaker 6: was or somebody she got snubbed. Yea, yes, that happened,
- 40:07Speaker 6: got snubbed.
- 40:08Speaker 5: And again that's that's the that's that's not cursing too,
- 40:13Speaker 5: that's that's not what you represent.
- 40:16Speaker 3: That's not what you're supposed to bring to your team.
- 40:18Speaker 3: Bring it.
- 40:22Speaker 5: I just think I just think, okay, so let's just
- 40:25Speaker 5: take one of your daughters. What you would You would
- 40:29Speaker 5: likely tell them to be a sportsman like as they
- 40:33Speaker 5: possibly could in any given sport, right, Yeah, would there
- 40:38Speaker 5: ever be a time that you would say, if this happens,
- 40:41Speaker 5: don't don't shake nobody's hands, or don't even be nice,
- 40:44Speaker 5: I just walk.
- 40:45Speaker 8: I think what we're missing is that I don't think
- 40:48Speaker 8: he was thinking in his head if we lose, I'm
- 40:51Speaker 8: not shaking hands. What I would want for my daughters
- 40:54Speaker 8: to have that same level of passion and be wrapped
- 40:58Speaker 8: up in their craft to a degree read in which
- 41:01Speaker 8: if you lose a game like he lost, where it
- 41:04Speaker 8: would be hard for you to deal with in that moment.
- 41:08Speaker 3: I want that level of passion. So, like I said,
- 41:11Speaker 3: I think.
- 41:11Speaker 8: Wenby is the athlete that we need at this time,
- 41:14Speaker 8: because we have a lot of athletes who just don't
- 41:17Speaker 8: have the level of want to, particularly in the NBA,
- 41:21Speaker 8: in the sports that needs.
- 41:22Speaker 3: All Right, so what what what the reality to that?
- 41:25Speaker 5: What I'm hearing from that, okay, is they can't accept losing.
- 41:31Speaker 5: They because they're because they are who they are. They
- 41:35Speaker 5: can't accept in the moment, just in the moment, not
- 41:38Speaker 5: long term. I'm not saying this is forever. I'm sure
- 41:40Speaker 5: he'll get back on the horse. Hell, we'll see next year.
- 41:43Speaker 5: When you can't, you can't accept the loss. You can't
- 41:47Speaker 5: accept the fact that you lost. So what you're gonna
- 41:50Speaker 5: do is you're gonna who you're blaming it on. You're
- 41:52Speaker 5: taking it out on the visiting team. So you're taking
- 41:57Speaker 5: You're written a lot on that, taking it out on
- 42:00Speaker 5: the visit. You just.
- 42:05Speaker 3: Taking it out. Let's put a lot on it.
- 42:08Speaker 6: Let's move on. Let's move on. Okay, I think we're
- 42:10Speaker 6: going to agree to disagree.
- 42:11Speaker 3: We all have opinions.
- 42:13Speaker 6: Let's talk about w baseball. Let's move on. Let's move on.
- 42:16Speaker 6: So the Mountaineers just pulled off. I know this won't
- 42:19Speaker 6: air till till later in the week, but they're they're
- 42:21Speaker 6: moving on to face number five North Carolina tomorrow at
- 42:25Speaker 6: two o'clock. So it's double elimination, So this is it.
- 42:29Speaker 3: Yeah, explain that how that works?
- 42:31Speaker 6: Double and double elimination. So it's kind of complicated for me.
- 42:35Speaker 6: My husband had to explain it all to me. But basically,
- 42:38Speaker 6: you are not out of the tournament until you lose twice.
- 42:43Speaker 6: And the way that they do it, like the two
- 42:45Speaker 6: teams like Troy and West Virginia played before West Virginia
- 42:49Speaker 6: one one I believe, and Troy had to play them
- 42:55Speaker 6: again because West Virginia lost to North Carolina. So now
- 42:58Speaker 6: North Carolina and West Virginia will play again because West
- 43:01Speaker 6: Virginia defeated Troy. So it's kind of confusing.
- 43:03Speaker 8: West Virginia has to win twice, so they have to
- 43:05Speaker 8: beat North Carolina twice.
- 43:08Speaker 6: Yes, yes, right, I think so. I think you're right, yeah,
- 43:11Speaker 6: because they have to be Yeah, yeah, North Carolina has
- 43:13Speaker 6: to have two losses as well. So yeah, it's kind
- 43:16Speaker 6: of mind boggling to me, but yeah, that's how it works.
- 43:19Speaker 6: But so just focusing on the team, you know, the
- 43:23Speaker 6: way that they're playing. I did a little research on
- 43:25Speaker 6: the roster they do have eleven seniors, and you know,
- 43:30Speaker 6: I was kind of like, when I looked at it,
- 43:32Speaker 6: They've got a fifth year transfer from Paul and Paul Showenfeld,
- 43:37Speaker 6: who's center field and a real consistent hitter for them.
- 43:41Speaker 6: They also have three transfers, Sean Smith, Brock Wheels, and
- 43:46Speaker 6: Brody kess Kresser. So when I looked at that, I thought,
- 43:49Speaker 6: you know, they've really West Virginia in the baseball world anyway,
- 43:53Speaker 6: has taken advantage of the transfer portal to get to
- 43:56Speaker 6: where they're going. So what are your ideas about that?
- 44:00Speaker 5: Well, my question to my question to that is, okay,
- 44:03Speaker 5: so it's super important that if you you have to
- 44:07Speaker 5: win now, yes, because with those seniors, unless your plan
- 44:12Speaker 5: is is to go back in, you know, because is
- 44:15Speaker 5: the depth chart going to be able to be your
- 44:17Speaker 5: step up after these guys are gone? Or are you
- 44:19Speaker 5: gonna have to go repeat what you just done, go
- 44:23Speaker 5: cherry pick and find the best players that you can
- 44:25Speaker 5: find and put them on your roster. I think that's
- 44:27Speaker 5: the only way that you can That's the only way
- 44:29Speaker 5: you could do it.
- 44:31Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 44:31Speaker 8: Again, I think this is kind of, you know, something
- 44:34Speaker 8: that's probably not unique to this year. Of baseball because
- 44:37Speaker 8: of the way they get drafted. So these guys, you know,
- 44:39Speaker 8: they can lead on their juniors, probably in sophomores and
- 44:42Speaker 8: even freshmen because you can go straight out of the
- 44:45Speaker 8: high school and get drafted as far as base baseball.
- 44:48Speaker 8: So I think, you know, it's one of them things where,
- 44:50Speaker 8: you know, baseball is a deep sport, and I think
- 44:53Speaker 8: and I love it because I think it's rounding out
- 44:55Speaker 8: to those guys are coming to college now, so a
- 44:59Speaker 8: lot of the major league teams they've sort of you know,
- 45:03Speaker 8: folded a lot of their affiliates in their minor league systems.
- 45:06Speaker 8: So I think it would be good, you know, and
- 45:08Speaker 8: again not to fold that completely, but I think it
- 45:10Speaker 8: would be good, you know, if we can get some
- 45:11Speaker 8: of that talent back to the back to college and
- 45:14Speaker 8: those guys can stay three, four, maybe five years.
- 45:17Speaker 3: So so I really like it.
- 45:18Speaker 6: Yeah, and I think it's a reflection of, you know,
- 45:21Speaker 6: the brilliance of their head coach Steve Sabins to be
- 45:23Speaker 6: able to do that what he's done with with the Mountaineers.
- 45:26Speaker 6: I mean, of course the coach before, coach Mayze got
- 45:29Speaker 6: it all started, but I think he's carrying on, you
- 45:32Speaker 6: know Sabans is carrying on the tradition pretty well. And
- 45:35Speaker 6: you know, South Carolina. I think he was in the
- 45:37Speaker 6: talks to uh to you know, be the South Carolina
- 45:40Speaker 6: head coach. Uh, you know, and it didn't happen. I
- 45:44Speaker 6: think the West Virginia is going to secure him and
- 45:45Speaker 6: he'll be back next year. So it's all good right now.
- 45:48Speaker 5: See, And I think I think what's unique about it too,
- 45:51Speaker 5: is like you know, not only are you bringing in
- 45:53Speaker 5: players that are talented, but they are blending in with
- 45:57Speaker 5: your team because some transer like that because sometimes you know,
- 46:01Speaker 5: you can get somebody who that doesn't fit maybe the roster,
- 46:07Speaker 5: but it seemingly now those guys are just it's fit.
- 46:12Speaker 5: I mean, it's a it's a fitting process that they
- 46:14Speaker 5: have created there that like, hey man, we can win
- 46:17Speaker 5: and anybody. I think going forward, I think it won't
- 46:21Speaker 5: be very difficult for them to get players to come.
- 46:24Speaker 6: So what do you guys think? Do you think they
- 46:26Speaker 6: have a chance? Do you think they can be for sure?
- 46:28Speaker 8: I mean North Carolina is a tough team, and I
- 46:29Speaker 8: think I want to say, the last time WVU was
- 46:32Speaker 8: in this position, they lost to North Carolina.
- 46:34Speaker 3: I want to say a couple of years ago, I
- 46:36Speaker 3: was there.
- 46:36Speaker 8: Yeah, so this has kind of been one of those
- 46:39Speaker 8: rivaly situations. And it's cool to talk about college.
- 46:41Speaker 3: Sports in June, right, it is cool, you know what.
- 46:44Speaker 8: I'm saying, like leading up to what's going to be
- 46:47Speaker 8: at the top of everybody's mind, obviously college football, So
- 46:50Speaker 8: it's cool to talk about it in June.
- 46:51Speaker 3: It's cool to talk about like WVU.
- 46:53Speaker 8: Sports when we talk about, as Mayor mentioned, winning the
- 46:56Speaker 8: Crown Championship, of the women's team, being in the in
- 47:00Speaker 8: the tournament, the rifle team, you know, baseball. Obviously we
- 47:05Speaker 8: want to get back in football, so it's cool just
- 47:07Speaker 8: to have the state on a stage obviously what we
- 47:09Speaker 8: get in soccer a couple of years back. So it's
- 47:12Speaker 8: cool to have, you know, our premier university being competitive
- 47:16Speaker 8: across a bunch of different athletics.
- 47:18Speaker 5: And as a Marshall guy, but more so as a
- 47:21Speaker 5: West Virginia guy, I can appreciate watching and realizing how
- 47:27Speaker 5: good West Virginia is doing.
- 47:28Speaker 3: You can't, you know, there's no way to really kind
- 47:31Speaker 3: of swing off.
- 47:31Speaker 6: So you're ready to say go Mountaineers, No, let's go.
- 47:37Speaker 8: Not have but even Marciall sports right when you talk
- 47:40Speaker 8: about the women, talk about they're always good and pretty
- 47:44Speaker 8: good in football, you know, the basketball team.
- 47:46Speaker 3: So it's like even Marshall, you know, you know.
- 47:49Speaker 6: I'm proud of both schools really and athletics.
- 47:52Speaker 5: All right, Well, ladies and gentlemen, uh Me and Hollis
- 47:56Speaker 5: probably won't be talking until next year.
- 48:00Speaker 3: We will be back again next week. We're out
