- 0:01SPEAKER_01: Welcome to Five Good Minutes.
- 0:03SPEAKER_01: You're listening to today's inspirational message on the book of Genesis with Jake Williams.
- 0:12SPEAKER_00: The story changes suddenly in verse 7.
- 0:15SPEAKER_00: It says, Now Joseph was well built and handsome, and after a while his master's wife took notice of Joseph and said, Come to bed with me.
- 0:26SPEAKER_00: Joseph has passed one test, the test of suffering, and now he faces another, the test of temptation.
- 0:33SPEAKER_00: Sometimes we assume that the greatest spiritual danger comes when life is difficult.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: But prosperity can be just as dangerous.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: Joseph now has responsibility, he has trust, influence, and access, and precisely there temptation comes.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: Potiphar's wife doesn't approach him once.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: Verse ten says that she speaks to him, quote, day after day.
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: And this is not really a momentary impulse.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: It's sustained pressure.
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: Joseph's response is really remarkable.
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: He says Potifar has withheld nothing from him, quote, except you, because you are his wife.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: How then could I do such a wicked thing and sin against God?
- 1:17SPEAKER_00: End quote.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: Notice Joseph's reasoning here.
- 1:21SPEAKER_00: He doesn't merely say I might get caught.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: He doesn't say this could damage my career.
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: He doesn't even begin with consequences.
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: He begins with relationships.
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: Potifar has trusted him, and God sees him.
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: And that's the foundation of Christian integrity.
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: Sin isn't merely breaking an impersonal rule, it's betraying trust and turning from God.
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: Joseph sees temptation clearly because he sees grace clearly as well.
- 1:51SPEAKER_00: Potifar has given him enormous responsibility.
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: God has been with him.
- 1:56SPEAKER_00: Therefore, he doesn't look at what is forbidden and say, God is keeping something good from me.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: He looks at everything he's been given and says, in effect, how could I respond to such grace by doing this thing?
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: And that's how grace changes obedience.
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: If your main motivation for holiness is fear of consequences, then you'll obey only when consequences seem likely.
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: But if your motivation is love for the God who has loved you, then integrity begins to reach into private places.
- 2:29SPEAKER_00: And Joseph also gives us practical wisdom here.
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: In verse 10, it says, he refused not only to sleep with her, but to even be with her.
- 2:39SPEAKER_00: He doesn't test his strength, he creates distance.
- 2:43SPEAKER_00: And then one day she grabs his cloak and says again, Come to bed with me.
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: Joseph leaves his cloak in her hand and runs out of the house.
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: And sometimes the most spiritual thing you can do is run.
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: We like to imagine spiritual maturity as standing calmly in the presence of temptation and proving how strong we are.
- 3:04SPEAKER_00: The Bible often says the opposite.
- 3:06SPEAKER_00: Flee sexual immorality, flee idolatry, flee youthful passions.
- 3:13SPEAKER_00: Wisdom knows that some battles are won by leaving the room.
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: And Joseph loses his cloak, but he keeps his integrity.
- 3:22SPEAKER_00: And there's a pattern here.
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: Earlier Joseph's brothers took his special robe and used it to deceive their father.
- 3:29SPEAKER_00: And now Potiphar's wife takes his cloak and will use it against him.
- 3:35SPEAKER_00: Joseph keeps losing garments because other people are determined to lie about him.
- 3:40SPEAKER_00: Faithfulness doesn't always protect your reputation.
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: And that matters because some of us obey partly because we assume God will make obedience work out immediately.
- 3:51SPEAKER_00: If I do the right thing, things will go well, we often think.
- 3:55SPEAKER_00: Joseph does the right thing, and his life gets worse.
- 3:59SPEAKER_00: But Joseph points us towards Jesus.
- 4:02SPEAKER_00: Jesus faced temptation and he never sinned.
- 4:06SPEAKER_00: Satan offered him kingdoms without the cross, bread without trust, glory without obedience, and Jesus refuses every shortcut.
- 4:16SPEAKER_00: But unlike Joseph, Jesus' perfect obedience ultimately led not merely to prison, but to crucifixion.
- 4:25SPEAKER_00: He lost more than a cloak.
- 4:27SPEAKER_00: He was stripped publicly and shamed.
- 4:31SPEAKER_00: Why?
- 4:33SPEAKER_00: For us.
- 4:34SPEAKER_00: Jesus endured the shame our sin deserved, so that failures like us could be clothed in his righteousness.
- 4:43SPEAKER_00: And that means when we fall, there's forgiveness.
- 4:47SPEAKER_00: And when we're tempted, there's power to obey.
- 4:52SPEAKER_00: So don't negotiate with temptation.
- 4:55SPEAKER_00: Don't ask how close you can get without crossing a line.
- 4:59SPEAKER_00: Remember the grace that you've received from God.
- 5:02SPEAKER_00: And when necessary, leave the cloak and run.
- 5:09SPEAKER_01: Thanks for joining us here today.
