- 1:04Speaker 6: Lisa?
- 1:04Speaker 4: I'm good? How are you?
- 1:06Speaker 5: I am really good. I'm actually excited.
- 1:09Speaker 3: We have a player, a former WU player than have
- 1:12Speaker 3: you introduced? I would love that who also played for
- 1:16Speaker 3: the Buffalo Bills, and I consider him a friend, and
- 1:19Speaker 3: I'll talk more about that friendship.
- 1:20Speaker 4: You're taking half of my introduction, but that's okay.
- 1:24Speaker 5: I'm gonna let you go ahead and take it. Go
- 1:25Speaker 5: ahead and take it all right.
- 1:27Speaker 7: So, our honored guest tonight is a former, as Carl said,
- 1:32Speaker 7: professional football player. He was a linebacker in the NFL
- 1:36Speaker 7: for fourteen seasons during the nineteen eighties and nineties. He
- 1:39Speaker 7: played collegiate football for West Virginia University and was recognized
- 1:44Speaker 7: as an All American during his time there. He also
- 1:46Speaker 7: played professionally for the Buffalo Bills, Atlanta Falcons, and Minnesota Vikings.
- 1:52Speaker 7: I give Carl the SADA the NFL. There you go,
- 1:56Speaker 7: and played in four Super Bowls with the Bills.
- 1:59Speaker 4: We'd like to work.
- 2:00Speaker 7: Welcome to the podcast tonight, mister Darryl Tally. Welcome Darryl.
- 2:04Speaker 6: Well, thank you guys for having me.
- 2:07Speaker 4: Lately.
- 2:08Speaker 3: Yeah, this one is gonna be fun because I already
- 2:11Speaker 3: know you, and I know that there is no there
- 2:16Speaker 3: is no following any kind of a script with you,
- 2:18Speaker 3: So who knows what you'll say.
- 2:20Speaker 6: So, but but but I would have got much better,
- 2:24Speaker 6: I will say, though.
- 2:26Speaker 3: I don't I well, let me make be the judge
- 2:29Speaker 3: of that after the show's over. So so let's let
- 2:34Speaker 3: me let me take you back and ask you a
- 2:36Speaker 3: question about WVU, your time with WVU, and what do
- 2:43Speaker 3: you see now with WVU compared to what you saw
- 2:49Speaker 3: it as being a player there, a great player there,
- 2:52Speaker 3: and what do you see now that you think makes
- 2:55Speaker 3: it different not as I don't know if you want
- 2:59Speaker 3: to say that this is the right, we're not as good,
- 3:01Speaker 3: or what do you think about the game of football
- 3:04Speaker 3: that is being played at WVU overall?
- 3:08Speaker 6: Okay, let's see. Well, thank you guys for having me
- 3:11Speaker 6: first of all, being on Here's the thing. What I
- 3:16Speaker 6: see at WU right now. I see a program that
- 3:20Speaker 6: was that was in flux right now where we're trying
- 3:24Speaker 6: to go from one coach to another and one type
- 3:28Speaker 6: of player to another. So we've got seventy eight guys,
- 3:32Speaker 6: eighty guys we brought in that Rich didn't recruit from
- 3:35Speaker 6: high school. He's got a few high school guys in
- 3:38Speaker 6: and he's recruited. But basically this thing has been dope
- 3:41Speaker 6: through the portal. Well, you got seventy eight new guys
- 3:45Speaker 6: coming into a school, and that's just like everybody coming
- 3:50Speaker 6: in as a freshman, everybody coming in as rookies, because
- 3:54Speaker 6: nobody has any prior knowledge of what his teams are,
- 3:57Speaker 6: what's to be expected, or anything like that. So that's
- 4:02Speaker 6: a huge difference for a coach. A coach has usually
- 4:05Speaker 6: got some sort of footing where he's had time to
- 4:08Speaker 6: build his program and get his thoughts across to his team,
- 4:12Speaker 6: how he wants to practice, how he wants the plays
- 4:14Speaker 6: to be ran. A coach has had a chance to
- 4:17Speaker 6: do that. Well, we really haven't had that much time.
- 4:20Speaker 6: We've had time for guys to learn the system, but
- 4:23Speaker 6: now in order for the system to become theirs in
- 4:26Speaker 6: dem on it. So that's just going to take time.
- 4:28Speaker 6: There's nothing else but time going to get that.
- 4:32Speaker 3: Is a w W fan base willing to be that
- 4:37Speaker 3: patient with the coach.
- 4:39Speaker 6: Here's the thing, here's the thing. We got no choice
- 4:42Speaker 6: because where other choices, we we got one of our
- 4:50Speaker 6: own in the house. We've got somebody we feel and
- 4:52Speaker 6: we trust. We've got somebody who's played at that level,
- 4:55Speaker 6: who's played the way that we want to play football.
- 5:00Speaker 6: Everybody held accountable, So yeah, you've got a guy in
- 5:03Speaker 6: the house that can do the job. Now it's the
- 5:06Speaker 6: idea of getting him the just like you said, getting
- 5:09Speaker 6: a shift the proper ingredients to make a cake. We
- 5:13Speaker 6: got to go get him the ingredients for a Kike
- 5:16Speaker 6: or he's got to go do his own shopping because
- 5:19Speaker 6: they're not letting me do his shopping for it. I'm
- 5:21Speaker 6: not his baker.
- 5:23Speaker 7: Yeah. Good analogy, and I think you're right. I think
- 5:27Speaker 7: the fan base does have to be patient.
- 5:29Speaker 4: Darryl.
- 5:29Speaker 6: You got to give him a year. You got to
- 5:31Speaker 6: get him two years, three years to do that, because
- 5:34Speaker 6: you got to remember, you got young, seventeen year old
- 5:37Speaker 6: kids that you're bringing in that you're expecting to do
- 5:40Speaker 6: things with. And think about that. Think about you when
- 5:44Speaker 6: you were seventeen years old? How old screwy was your brand?
- 5:49Speaker 6: Where were you going?
- 5:51Speaker 4: What do you mean, Daryl.
- 5:52Speaker 7: Girls still in that stage. I don't know if you
- 5:54Speaker 7: ever left at adolescent.
- 5:56Speaker 8: Well I just.
- 5:58Speaker 6: Went from thirteen to fourteen.
- 6:00Speaker 3: Okay, that's a little bit I would have said for him,
- 6:05Speaker 3: but I'll work with him.
- 6:09Speaker 5: Go ahead. Well, well, let me ask you this and this.
- 6:13Speaker 3: Look this is kind of more direct, and I'm curious
- 6:16Speaker 3: to see because you kind of sounded like you you
- 6:19Speaker 3: really trust in in in the.
- 6:21Speaker 6: Head coach in the process. Okay, I trust in the process.
- 6:25Speaker 6: Is the process?
- 6:26Speaker 3: Or do you like the coaches pick or the university's
- 6:30Speaker 3: pick of the coach.
- 6:32Speaker 6: I like the university's pick as a coach number one,
- 6:35Speaker 6: because I feel I feel like I've got one of
- 6:38Speaker 6: my own in the house. It's been through the same
- 6:41Speaker 6: wars I've been through. This had to be down there
- 6:43Speaker 6: throwing up in the in the basement of the powers,
- 6:48Speaker 6: down into on the field, throwing up. I've seen that.
- 6:52Speaker 6: I don't have to wonder about that. I know that.
- 6:56Speaker 6: I know that's what he's been through. I don't have
- 6:58Speaker 6: to guess I was there seeing it. M nothing be
- 7:04Speaker 6: self experience. So that much, I know that much, I'm
- 7:07Speaker 6: not worried about. But what I'm worried about is giving
- 7:10Speaker 6: him a proper amount of time. Because here's the thing.
- 7:13Speaker 6: You grow wasn't built in a day, right, and you're
- 7:16Speaker 6: asking to turn a program around that had good players
- 7:19Speaker 6: in it, but a lot of guys left. And this
- 7:22Speaker 6: is a time nine times now, these times now you
- 7:26Speaker 6: if you don't like the place you can lead, there's
- 7:29Speaker 6: no repercussions for you leaving.
- 7:31Speaker 2: Now.
- 7:31Speaker 6: There used to be repercussions for us.
- 7:34Speaker 3: And if you play good for you, it's all about money.
- 7:43Speaker 3: So I think that makes it hard to hard, hard
- 7:47Speaker 3: to grow a team with a seed with guys year
- 7:51Speaker 3: in and year out, because the better guy I'm leaving.
- 7:54Speaker 6: Yeah, the better guy's going to leave. So what I'm
- 7:56Speaker 6: thinking is Richie's got to get him a nucleus of guys.
- 7:59Speaker 6: He's got a crew guys this year, he may lose
- 8:01Speaker 6: a few, and he's got a recruited class next year.
- 8:04Speaker 6: Next year will give him two classes of recruits of
- 8:08Speaker 6: his guys. He went out and got. He hand picked
- 8:11Speaker 6: what he wanted. Okay, everybody else to know from the portal,
- 8:14Speaker 6: that's fine. Then he goes to the third year, the
- 8:17Speaker 6: third year coming out, I think rich should be ready
- 8:20Speaker 6: to go and he should be full with bare He
- 8:24Speaker 6: should be unfabold at that time because he should have
- 8:27Speaker 6: a roster full of his guys that now know exactly
- 8:32Speaker 6: what to do because he's brought him in from freshmen.
- 8:35Speaker 6: Now the juniors. Thinking about your your your growth from
- 8:40Speaker 6: your freshman year to your junior year. Would anybody know
- 8:43Speaker 6: you as a freshman if they seen you then and
- 8:46Speaker 6: then seeing you as a junior.
- 8:49Speaker 5: You can say, man, you might want to take they
- 8:51Speaker 5: do a junior.
- 8:56Speaker 1: I know A.
- 9:03Speaker 7: Yeah, so, uh, Darryl, I'm gonna I'm gonna switch lanes
- 9:07Speaker 7: and take you back in time a little bit to
- 9:10Speaker 7: East Cleveland where you attended Shaw High School.
- 9:13Speaker 4: I'm here, oh okay, okay.
- 9:16Speaker 7: I read some some information about your time there that
- 9:19Speaker 7: during that time you played both full back and linebacker,
- 9:23Speaker 7: and it kind of pushed away some of your recruiting
- 9:27Speaker 7: schools because you never settled on either position, and so that.
- 9:30Speaker 6: No playa man, you.
- 9:32Speaker 4: Didn't play both in high school.
- 9:35Speaker 6: I was all, okay. My sophomore year, I played running
- 9:38Speaker 6: I tried to play running back myself.
- 9:40Speaker 4: Running back, okay, that's my bad. And linebacker no YEA
- 9:45Speaker 4: one year.
- 9:46Speaker 6: I looked at the guy, Yeah, I got okay, okay,
- 9:52Speaker 6: I ran. I ran a trap and I had to
- 9:55Speaker 6: guys about two hundred and seventy pounds apiece me, and
- 9:59Speaker 6: I was that was that I got him off the ground.
- 10:04Speaker 6: I went back over to mister ballman, and I totally
- 10:07Speaker 6: if I ever asked you to play running back again,
- 10:11Speaker 6: kicked me in my ass. My expression, that's what I said.
- 10:14Speaker 4: Well, that explains the whole the whole the bottle there.
- 10:17Speaker 6: Right, never been back when the other sat off.
- 10:21Speaker 3: That's what got me on the defensive side off. So yeah,
- 10:24Speaker 3: I experienced that, and I was like, I don't really
- 10:26Speaker 3: think I want to do this.
- 10:27Speaker 5: I'd rather hit you than you hit me.
- 10:29Speaker 4: Oh my gosh, yeah hit me.
- 10:32Speaker 6: It's pretty this way. They made a sandwich out of me.
- 10:36Speaker 6: You can't remember when I was in school. I was
- 10:39Speaker 6: only thirty five pounds. Oh wow, Okay, these guys are
- 10:44Speaker 6: seventy Yeah.
- 10:45Speaker 4: Yeah, peace.
- 10:46Speaker 6: So yeah, I'll strike fire and anybody. I'll strike fire
- 10:51Speaker 6: on anybody.
- 10:52Speaker 4: Yeah, it don't matter.
- 10:55Speaker 7: Okay, well let me maybe let me let me see
- 10:57Speaker 7: if this part's correct. Maybe the Internet was lying to
- 10:59Speaker 7: me all day today. Uh did you did you actually
- 11:02Speaker 7: miss your last seven high school games with a broken ankle?
- 11:06Speaker 6: Yep?
- 11:06Speaker 9: Okay, okay, di varsity games okay, my junior year, my senior.
- 11:11Speaker 4: Year, okay, So broke my ankle, yes, okay.
- 11:16Speaker 6: Senior year, broke my hand, broke your.
- 11:18Speaker 4: Hand okay, okay.
- 11:19Speaker 7: So whenever those things, those injuries occurred, then w U
- 11:24Speaker 7: came knocking on your door and actively recruited you. You know,
- 11:27Speaker 7: what were your initial thoughts thinking about the school.
- 11:35Speaker 4: The late response, I'm not sure if we want to
- 11:38Speaker 4: hear this, Aryl.
- 11:41Speaker 6: Was, I got to go to a lot of schools.
- 11:44Speaker 6: But what was interesting when I got to West Virginia
- 11:50Speaker 6: there were a lot of guys from my area there.
- 11:53Speaker 6: There were already a lot of guys from the Ohio
- 11:55Speaker 6: area there, Okay. And the other thing that attracted me
- 12:00Speaker 6: was it was eight the one right that's the girls,
- 12:07Speaker 6: and I was like five. I mean it was like
- 12:14Speaker 6: it was four to four. I mean it was a
- 12:16Speaker 6: lot closer Syracuse. It was nine to one in West Virginia.
- 12:20Speaker 6: So I figured, I'm going with the odds and I
- 12:22Speaker 6: have more fun on my recruiting trip in West Virginia.
- 12:25Speaker 4: I bet you did.
- 12:28Speaker 6: I'm a guy that I think the odds in my favor,
- 12:33Speaker 6: I said, I'm not that guy who's not going to
- 12:35Speaker 6: bet on himself and trust always better on Darryl.
- 12:40Speaker 5: And trust me, I've been around him him.
- 12:45Speaker 6: Darl I know what I'm working with it. I know
- 12:50Speaker 6: what I got, I know what I am, I know
- 12:53Speaker 6: how I am. I will not quit. Daryl's going. Darrel's
- 12:56Speaker 6: in this for the long long. If he decides to
- 12:58Speaker 6: do it, He's getting in it. He's getting involved, And
- 13:01Speaker 6: isn't it Isn't.
- 13:02Speaker 3: It interesting though, because I think when people think of
- 13:06Speaker 3: certain players, you know, they see them, they think that
- 13:09Speaker 3: they're you know, they evaluate them as good, great, whatever.
- 13:13Speaker 3: And but when you actually talk about your self confidence,
- 13:19Speaker 3: it seems like it's like, well, wait a minute, is
- 13:22Speaker 3: he cocky? And and I don't think like, I don't
- 13:25Speaker 3: think that like people understand like what like what confidence that.
- 13:30Speaker 5: You have to have?
- 13:31Speaker 6: Just no, I just know what I know.
- 13:34Speaker 5: Right, And and people and people can be uncomfortable with that,
- 13:39Speaker 5: you know.
- 13:39Speaker 6: They Yes, I've had people trying to tell me what
- 13:42Speaker 6: I knew that I didn't know. I knew it to
- 13:46Speaker 6: be true. They're trying to tell me it's not. And
- 13:48Speaker 6: I'm like, no, no, no, no, no, you got the wrong one.
- 13:53Speaker 6: And that's when they that's when they get the idea that, yeah,
- 13:57Speaker 6: he's stubborn, he's something different, he's a different human because
- 14:01Speaker 6: he's duped a little different when it comes it up.
- 14:03Speaker 3: And most of the most most great players, most players
- 14:07Speaker 3: who get to the next level, are different.
- 14:10Speaker 5: They are different.
- 14:10Speaker 4: Oh I'll attest to that.
- 14:14Speaker 6: Yes, we are, we are.
- 14:17Speaker 5: We're a little different. We're a little different.
- 14:20Speaker 3: Man.
- 14:21Speaker 6: Oh god, we don't. We're not wired the same way.
- 14:24Speaker 6: That's that's the way may have regular wiring, and that's.
- 14:29Speaker 4: What motivates you for sure. So well let's go. Let's
- 14:33Speaker 4: go back in time. Not quite as far.
- 14:35Speaker 7: This time, Daryl, Okay, but we'll go to nineteen seventy nine,
- 14:38Speaker 7: eighty two. Uh, you were part of the Mountaineer team.
- 14:42Speaker 7: You led the team I think in eighty one to
- 14:44Speaker 7: the Peach Bowl and the Gator Bowl in eighty two,
- 14:46Speaker 7: and you were one and one in those games, correct you.
- 14:48Speaker 7: I think you had a victory over Florida impeach and
- 14:53Speaker 7: then lost to Florida State Gator bawl. Right, m yeah,
- 14:57Speaker 7: Gator Bowl has always been tough for Mountaineers, has I
- 15:03Speaker 7: like both? Don't let him tell you such blasphemy. I
- 15:06Speaker 7: love Yeah, go ahead.
- 15:09Speaker 6: Gator Bowl was a trip. Yeah, I mean the Peach Bowl,
- 15:14Speaker 6: Beach Bowl. We had we were we had something to prove. Yes,
- 15:19Speaker 6: we had been disrespect I felt disrespected. We were the
- 15:24Speaker 6: little lonely child from West Virginia. You were a little
- 15:27Speaker 6: chargle from West Virginia playing football. We had no business
- 15:30Speaker 6: out there playing with those big boys from Florida, those
- 15:33Speaker 6: boys in Florida. They were all Americans, all of these
- 15:36Speaker 6: great guys, and what are they gonna do? Play these
- 15:39Speaker 6: little lonely kids from West Virginia, Florida. We brought a
- 15:42Speaker 6: mud turtle to the game and a fight. Wow, a
- 15:46Speaker 6: fight and a resolve to the game that nobody had seen. Yeah,
- 15:50Speaker 6: they didn't think. They didn't think that we would come
- 15:53Speaker 6: at him that hard. They honestly didn't think we were
- 15:56Speaker 6: gonna come play. They thought they were gonna roll us over.
- 16:00Speaker 6: And then they got a big blood slap in the
- 16:02Speaker 6: face of reality. But the shot that had been heard
- 16:07Speaker 6: around the world was sent off the year before, and
- 16:12Speaker 6: that was Oklahoma.
- 16:15Speaker 4: That's right in eighty right, yep, Yeah, you were part
- 16:19Speaker 4: of that victory. Yeah, that was huge. I remember it now.
- 16:22Speaker 6: Yeah, I was. I was a part of the I
- 16:24Speaker 6: was a part of the vicious beating we took too.
- 16:28Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 16:30Speaker 6: I was part of the reason why it didn't become
- 16:34Speaker 6: once we went out there and we had that that
- 16:36Speaker 6: went out there, right, because you could beat fifty forty
- 16:42Speaker 6: two points and you could do nothing but stand there. Now,
- 16:47Speaker 6: remember I was a freshman, but did probably honest, when
- 16:52Speaker 6: you're looking across the street and you got Thomas Slot,
- 16:56Speaker 6: Kenny King, David Overstreet h and who was the other
- 17:03Speaker 6: and then you got reeb sorry and Jackson for the Guards.
- 17:07Speaker 6: Well they got an all pro offense over there, Yeah,
- 17:10Speaker 6: and they beat us by forty two points.
- 17:14Speaker 4: Woodshed trip, right, that was a wood ship.
- 17:19Speaker 9: Yeah, And that was when you learned how football was
- 17:24Speaker 9: really to be played, really for me, because then we
- 17:28Speaker 9: got to go into the Penn State mm hm.
- 17:31Speaker 4: And you're part of that and you got to take it.
- 17:34Speaker 6: That was a part of what beating we took. Then.
- 17:37Speaker 6: I was part of the beating that we took from Pitt.
- 17:40Speaker 6: So those two national championship teams plus Oklahoma was enough
- 17:44Speaker 6: of a beating from me and scarring in my life
- 17:48Speaker 6: for me to have to come out and get some
- 17:49Speaker 6: revenge on some people.
- 17:51Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 17:52Speaker 7: And you guys just and now, Jeff, how was that?
- 17:55Speaker 7: Jeff Hosteler was with you, right, was it?
- 17:57Speaker 4: Jeff?
- 17:58Speaker 6: Yep?
- 17:58Speaker 4: That's what I thought.
- 18:00Speaker 6: Yeah, here's even funnier party. The year before, we're playing
- 18:06Speaker 6: Penn State in Morgantown. I knocked a Blackledge out of
- 18:10Speaker 6: the game. Jeff comes in the game, wins the game
- 18:13Speaker 6: for Penn State. Next year, Jeff comes to West Virginia.
- 18:18Speaker 6: We tore we go to Oklahoma, Jeff's my quarterback? Then
- 18:23Speaker 6: did show ironic? We go to the Super Bowl, that
- 18:26Speaker 6: super quarterback, I'm playing against him.
- 18:29Speaker 4: Yes, that's crazy.
- 18:33Speaker 5: That's crazy for sure.
- 18:34Speaker 6: Now, so I'm looking at that and yes I'm going.
- 18:39Speaker 6: And I have an argument with my roommate Bruce about him.
- 18:42Speaker 6: I told him, I said, Bruce, you know you got
- 18:45Speaker 6: to get Jeff on the ground. You know you got
- 18:47Speaker 6: to get him on the ground. You got to get
- 18:49Speaker 6: him on the ground, because you know it be of
- 18:51Speaker 6: the strong. You got to get him down. And what
- 18:55Speaker 6: did he do? Bruce misses him in the back for
- 18:58Speaker 6: sight a safety. Had he's got the safety. We win
- 19:02Speaker 6: the game because they don't go down to sport a
- 19:04Speaker 6: touchdown before halftime.
- 19:05Speaker 7: Oh gosh, okay, yeah, okay, that's rough.
- 19:10Speaker 6: Okay, Now here's the other part of that story. Y'ell
- 19:14Speaker 6: makes a play on third down. We still don't have
- 19:16Speaker 6: to go down and make that play. We still don't
- 19:18Speaker 6: have to do that because during the same drive, I
- 19:21Speaker 6: missed a tackle that I made. I missed in the backfield,
- 19:24Speaker 6: gobbing made across the line of scrimmage, and he made
- 19:26Speaker 6: the first down. So there's that.
- 19:30Speaker 3: Isn't it interesting how you can remember like the worst place.
- 19:34Speaker 6: When you get you get to sit back. Now you've
- 19:38Speaker 6: got perspective on everything. You see where you streamed up.
- 19:42Speaker 6: You know exactly what you did wrong. Yeah, and if
- 19:47Speaker 6: you can go but I can do it again, would
- 19:48Speaker 6: you be able to do it right? I still don't
- 19:51Speaker 6: think so.
- 19:52Speaker 5: Yeah, I don't know. I truly I'm with you.
- 19:55Speaker 6: Here's the thing. Fate is fake. It's gonna happen.
- 20:00Speaker 3: And don't you think and don't you think too. It's
- 20:04Speaker 3: a it's a it's a balancing act too, because if
- 20:07Speaker 3: you don't have those, you are really gonna think that
- 20:10Speaker 3: you're something special, like because nobody's beat nobody's gonna beat
- 20:14Speaker 3: me deep until somebody beats me.
- 20:16Speaker 4: Deep until it.
- 20:19Speaker 3: And then once it happens, you don't get to say
- 20:21Speaker 3: nobody's gonna beat me deep.
- 20:24Speaker 6: That's right. And trust me, I understand that because I
- 20:29Speaker 6: used to be the guy sitting there. Tell you don't worry.
- 20:32Speaker 6: The fore BET's mine. I got the outcut. I got
- 20:35Speaker 6: that outcut, that's mine. They got out go to me,
- 20:38Speaker 6: I got that. You think everything's deep and ed?
- 20:41Speaker 5: Are you take care of the outside I.
- 20:44Speaker 6: Gotta get my ass out there, and you you don't
- 20:48Speaker 6: see it, and that's you think. Today's day, you don't
- 20:50Speaker 6: see outside linebackers that are able to get there and
- 20:54Speaker 6: cover that guy. And I'm like, wait a minute, this
- 20:57Speaker 6: is what I did, and I'm looking at it and
- 21:00Speaker 6: happens every day. But see somebody run that stupid route.
- 21:03Speaker 6: And I'm like, look, you need to play for stake.
- 21:09Speaker 6: You do something different and you got to get somebody
- 21:12Speaker 6: under that route.
- 21:14Speaker 3: Let me ask you this to that point, the plays
- 21:17Speaker 3: that you and again this is all this all runs
- 21:21Speaker 3: into my head. The plays that you can see that
- 21:24Speaker 3: you watch and you see guys not make and you
- 21:27Speaker 3: think to yourself, man, why can't they not make that play?
- 21:33Speaker 4: As you sit on your couch.
- 21:36Speaker 5: We are on the couch. We're on the couch, watch it.
- 21:40Speaker 3: And I'm sure that it's happened to me that that
- 21:43Speaker 3: that place, that somebody beat me. But then but then
- 21:46Speaker 3: my justification to that is, see I even got a
- 21:49Speaker 3: back up there. Well, if that's you know, if that happened,
- 21:52Speaker 3: Andre Reid did that to me, Jerry Rice did that
- 21:55Speaker 3: to me, you throw out the big man.
- 22:00Speaker 10: Yes, because you're all aware of that that's just like
- 22:05Speaker 10: I'm aware of Randy Boss looking at me after a
- 22:09Speaker 10: Russ Francis hits me my rookie year, and I look
- 22:13Speaker 10: up through.
- 22:13Speaker 6: The air hole. Rand is going damn Randy's cross all
- 22:21Speaker 6: the time. So when everybody used to same on BV,
- 22:24Speaker 6: I used to say, damn, I've seen him already.
- 22:27Speaker 5: Oh wow.
- 22:28Speaker 7: Oh, let me ask you this, yes, Darrell about it
- 22:33Speaker 7: seems like you when you started in nineteen seventy nine
- 22:36Speaker 7: with the Mountaineers, that was a bad year, and you
- 22:39Speaker 7: guys built a team. You brought in Jeff Hosteler, you
- 22:42Speaker 7: added some people that could make you better so that
- 22:45Speaker 7: you went to those Gator or the Gator Bolling eighty
- 22:47Speaker 7: two and the peach Ball in eighty one. Do you
- 22:49Speaker 7: feel like in this day and time that your team
- 22:52Speaker 7: that you built and from seventy nine to eighty two
- 22:55Speaker 7: and was so successful with do you think that would
- 22:57Speaker 7: even be possible into day's world with the transfer portal
- 23:02Speaker 7: and ni L? I mean, do you do you feel
- 23:05Speaker 7: like that you would have stayed.
- 23:06Speaker 6: We'd have broken Let's put it this way, we'd have
- 23:09Speaker 6: broke the n I L team. We'd have broke it.
- 23:13Speaker 4: Yeah, I agree, with that.
- 23:14Speaker 6: Yeah, diould have been like, uh, we can't paid that one.
- 23:19Speaker 6: We ain't paying. But then again, you know what, that
- 23:21Speaker 6: stuff still went on. To be honest with you, Okay,
- 23:24Speaker 6: you can't. You can't say that it didn't has been
- 23:26Speaker 6: going on since the attorney. This is the n I
- 23:30Speaker 6: l is just them bringing it to light. Course what
- 23:33Speaker 6: it is, just course, what it is. This is what
- 23:36Speaker 6: he's going on. I ain't going through the shade on
- 23:40Speaker 6: nobody and no, no dust Yeah we both know. Well
- 23:47Speaker 6: am I am, I am I speaking on the turn.
- 23:49Speaker 5: No you're not. No you're not.
- 23:51Speaker 6: And we both know.
- 23:52Speaker 5: Yes, I know not because I got a dollar. I didn't.
- 23:56Speaker 5: I didn't get it, doll, I didn't get it. I
- 23:58Speaker 5: didn't get it a dollar.
- 23:59Speaker 6: But way, but here's the thing. I didn't get a dollar.
- 24:04Speaker 6: I got one one guy gave me. So I can't
- 24:08Speaker 6: say that I didn't get one dollar. I got one
- 24:11Speaker 6: hell some money hand in the middle and got me one.
- 24:17Speaker 3: See Marshall, right, and Marshall see and and and the
- 24:21Speaker 3: difference in Marshall than probably a lot of places we had.
- 24:25Speaker 3: You know, first we had Sonny Randa, who was a
- 24:27Speaker 3: former NFL player and all that kind of good stuff,
- 24:30Speaker 3: and he wasn't having that, like he wasn't going to
- 24:34Speaker 3: have us getting money from anybody.
- 24:36Speaker 5: You know. Now the program absolutely he's going after that.
- 24:39Speaker 5: But yes, I.
- 24:44Speaker 3: Don't think any and and I might be wrong, and
- 24:46Speaker 3: you can corrack me when I finished here, but I
- 24:48Speaker 3: don't think coaches worried about it being wrong.
- 24:51Speaker 5: I think they worried about how to do it.
- 24:55Speaker 3: And I think because I've talked to a ton of
- 24:57Speaker 3: guys that I played in the locker room at the
- 24:59Speaker 3: Pro Left who talked about getting money and the way
- 25:03Speaker 3: they got it and how much they got, you know,
- 25:06Speaker 3: whether enough.
- 25:07Speaker 5: For cars and all that kind of stuff. So this
- 25:10Speaker 5: isn't new.
- 25:11Speaker 3: It's just it's the way social media is, the way
- 25:15Speaker 3: the TV news is. It's all that stuff now is
- 25:18Speaker 3: getting out and people are comfortable with it. If you
- 25:21Speaker 3: were getting paid, you were gonna be as private as
- 25:25Speaker 3: you could be with anybody who's not getting paid.
- 25:29Speaker 5: But everybody who's getting paid is cool. We're cool.
- 25:32Speaker 6: Every everybody everybody's getting paid don't know about it. And
- 25:35Speaker 6: the problem was I wasn't getting paid. It was pretty
- 25:38Speaker 6: this way. I told myself how bad I was, and
- 25:43Speaker 6: he told me no, and I will stand on the
- 25:47Speaker 6: stock of Bibles with w I went to go Senia
- 25:50Speaker 6: and asked him and he told me, no, we don't
- 25:51Speaker 6: do things like that. The health and I and I
- 25:55Speaker 6: and I watched, I watched a great running back that
- 25:59Speaker 6: needed help. They didn't get it. We didn't keep and
- 26:04Speaker 6: this guy would have probably I don't know, hmm. I
- 26:09Speaker 6: say that because I've watched him, played against him and
- 26:15Speaker 6: seeing what kind of runner he was at the age
- 26:18Speaker 6: he was. I don't think luckily he got hurt and
- 26:25Speaker 6: he had some problems. But yeah, one kid, we because
- 26:29Speaker 6: he asked you, and then I would ask you and
- 26:31Speaker 6: he told me, no, we don't do things like that.
- 26:34Speaker 3: Were you there, and I can't remember if you told
- 26:36Speaker 3: me this before you were you were there with Robert Alexander.
- 26:41Speaker 5: Were you there?
- 26:43Speaker 6: Yeah? I was there with that. I was there with him,
- 26:45Speaker 6: footing him all of.
- 26:46Speaker 3: Them, and and I and I know, I know we've
- 26:49Speaker 3: had this conversation together because I remember it because Robert
- 26:55Speaker 3: was my guy, Like he was the guy who was
- 26:59Speaker 3: talking to me in my ears, saying this is what
- 27:01Speaker 3: you got to do, you got to put the time
- 27:03Speaker 3: in and all of those kind of things. And I
- 27:05Speaker 3: have I have defended him on his time at wv U,
- 27:12Speaker 3: because what he told me was that you know his
- 27:18Speaker 3: because he was the guy who told me, don't drink,
- 27:20Speaker 3: don't smoke.
- 27:20Speaker 5: Don't do anything right.
- 27:22Speaker 3: And and everybody's fully aware of his his his life
- 27:27Speaker 3: and and and.
- 27:28Speaker 5: Where he ended up.
- 27:30Speaker 3: But he told he came to me and we had
- 27:33Speaker 3: a conversation long before he passed, and he had said
- 27:37Speaker 3: to me that he got caught up in the painkillers,
- 27:40Speaker 3: and the painkillers ended up taking him somewhere else and
- 27:48Speaker 3: once he got out there, would you if you do you.
- 27:52Speaker 5: Know, if that's kind of what you would you say?
- 27:55Speaker 6: That's true relatively, that's relatively truth. Yes, I knew Robber
- 28:01Speaker 6: as well. That's relatively truth. But my thing was this
- 28:10Speaker 6: that that took him out. Uh. I don't know what
- 28:16Speaker 6: else led to it, but there was something he was
- 28:20Speaker 6: dealing with that he couldn't deal with. It's just like
- 28:23Speaker 6: an alcoholic. And I've only I can only say that
- 28:26Speaker 6: because I've gone through it and figured it out my
- 28:30Speaker 6: damn self. He doesn't. He doesn't realize what's bothering him
- 28:35Speaker 6: until he's done some work. And if you do enough
- 28:38Speaker 6: work on yourself, you'll figure out things and that you'll
- 28:41Speaker 6: have people show you things and there's ways to learn
- 28:44Speaker 6: about what's going on with you. Do you think so
- 28:49Speaker 6: he probably needed to have somebody go through that with him,
- 28:54Speaker 6: And I have had someone do and it has made
- 28:56Speaker 6: a world a difference in my life. So yes, he
- 29:00Speaker 6: had he needed somebody to go through that with him.
- 29:03Speaker 3: Do you think that the fan base, his fan base,
- 29:07Speaker 3: that was everybody in West Virginia who wanted him to
- 29:11Speaker 3: go to West Virginia? Do you think that ended up
- 29:14Speaker 3: becoming like too much pressure, too much pressure, too much
- 29:18Speaker 3: and create a downfall?
- 29:21Speaker 6: Don't I don't think so, because see, here's what I
- 29:23Speaker 6: looked at like for me, if I choose to go
- 29:28Speaker 6: to a place, I choose to go there on my own.
- 29:31Speaker 5: See, I don't think he did, and I don't think
- 29:33Speaker 5: he did that.
- 29:34Speaker 6: I'm like going there just because you want me to.
- 29:38Speaker 6: Well see here's the other thing. Well, see i'd heard
- 29:41Speaker 6: stories about what was said to Kurt Warner and he
- 29:46Speaker 6: at the same time. They told not to even because
- 29:51Speaker 6: Robert was the back there, which I thought was byes
- 29:55Speaker 6: because we had linebackers from Cleveland. But I was still
- 29:59Speaker 6: going there was from Cleveland. I'm from Cleveland. I'm playing
- 30:02Speaker 6: linebacker too, So what is that.
- 30:05Speaker 3: Well, see, I know, I know I played with Kurt
- 30:07Speaker 3: in the in the North South game, and he said
- 30:11Speaker 3: that he wasn't he once Robert had gone, he wasn't
- 30:16Speaker 3: going because what it looked like, it didn't.
- 30:20Speaker 5: He didn't. He didn't feel like they you.
- 30:24Speaker 3: Know, because it took a little while be when they
- 30:26Speaker 3: put him in the eye before they put him in
- 30:28Speaker 3: the eye backfield. I wanted. I wanted WU to recruit
- 30:31Speaker 3: me so I could say no I did, and they never.
- 30:37Speaker 5: They didn't.
- 30:37Speaker 3: They didn't, they didn't, they didn't. I think they came
- 30:40Speaker 3: to the school, but they didn't. They didn't even talk
- 30:43Speaker 3: to me.
- 30:45Speaker 6: Wow, and and and so like for me, Yeah, there's
- 30:51Speaker 6: a there's a natural descent or hatred. They're built up already.
- 30:55Speaker 3: Yes, yes, yes, yes, I was trying to please just
- 30:59Speaker 3: let me tell you no, please, just let me tell
- 31:01Speaker 3: you know and again and I go, which at that
- 31:05Speaker 3: time wasn't the Marshall w U thing wasn't.
- 31:09Speaker 5: It wasn't a big deal. It was wv U. And
- 31:11Speaker 5: then Marshall's over here.
- 31:12Speaker 3: I ended up going to Marshall just because you know,
- 31:17Speaker 3: I didn't really have to Marshall.
- 31:20Speaker 6: Yeah, you got, you gotta go to Marshall because of
- 31:24Speaker 6: the coach. It was at Marshall. What is his damn name,
- 31:26Speaker 6: Sonny Randall. Oh, that's what you went there. That's why
- 31:33Speaker 6: you went there. Yes, yes, that's why you went there.
- 31:36Speaker 6: That's what I'm having. I'm not having Bringfirk remember names.
- 31:49Speaker 5: You Welcome to my world. World.
- 31:53Speaker 6: That's where Randy went to school at. That's where a
- 31:56Speaker 6: lot of folks went to school and they wanted they
- 31:58Speaker 6: wanted the ideas.
- 31:59Speaker 3: And then you're talking about Bob, Like, now, Bob pruit
- 32:02Speaker 3: was my dB coach and doctor and.
- 32:03Speaker 6: Bob Pruitt, Yes, yes, that's my boy. That's my guy.
- 32:11Speaker 6: He got he gets in your and he gets in
- 32:13Speaker 6: coach needs too. And that's what I love about him.
- 32:16Speaker 6: That man there don't care. He he would be a
- 32:19Speaker 6: great linebacker coach.
- 32:22Speaker 3: He was a great dB coach, Like I mean, he
- 32:24Speaker 3: was like like his approach to the game, it's it's
- 32:31Speaker 3: super serious and it's super funny and there's nothing in between.
- 32:35Speaker 3: Like it's always going to be like do this or
- 32:39Speaker 3: tap you on your helmet and on one side and
- 32:42Speaker 3: he jumps.
- 32:42Speaker 5: To the other side, you know, like he's just like
- 32:45Speaker 5: having fun.
- 32:46Speaker 4: That's a perfect mixture.
- 32:47Speaker 5: That perfect to me.
- 32:50Speaker 3: Him and Pete Carroll are probably two of the best
- 32:55Speaker 3: individual people that I have ever played for, and I
- 32:58Speaker 3: think I'm from both of them. I think I'm in
- 33:02Speaker 3: the NFL because of Coach Preuitt. I think my career
- 33:07Speaker 3: ends up becoming what I believe is is successful because
- 33:13Speaker 3: because of that, because.
- 33:14Speaker 6: Of well, Pete Carroll. I'm gonna tell you what. I'm
- 33:18Speaker 6: gonna tell you what you got, same got your tree
- 33:21Speaker 6: ran through mind. Carol was in my tree too, he
- 33:26Speaker 6: was in WU two. Really I had Pete. No, I
- 33:30Speaker 6: had Pete Carroll when I was in Buffalo.
- 33:33Speaker 4: Yes, yes, that was early years.
- 33:35Speaker 5: Was that after that?
- 33:36Speaker 3: Was that? Was that after he left Minnesota? Or No,
- 33:39Speaker 3: this is before he went to Minnesota.
- 33:41Speaker 6: Oh okay, maybe this is all before. Pete hadn't been
- 33:44Speaker 6: anywhere yet.
- 33:45Speaker 5: Oh I didn't know that. I didn't know that.
- 33:48Speaker 6: Yeah, Stee, here's a funny budget. A lot of people
- 33:51Speaker 6: don't know I've got I've got all of fame coaches
- 33:54Speaker 6: underneath my tree, and it's that I've had been taught by.
- 33:59Speaker 6: And that's funny to me. That's because I'm sitting I'm
- 34:03Speaker 6: sitting there looking and going, yeah, well, I know how
- 34:06Speaker 6: he thinks. I know how he thinks. You know, he's
- 34:08Speaker 6: not gonna go for that. And no, he's not gonna
- 34:10Speaker 6: say that. I've already been coached by him. I've been
- 34:13Speaker 6: taught by him already know and.
- 34:16Speaker 3: Doesn't that doesn't that reality of those type of coaches.
- 34:21Speaker 3: So I so I got I got Pete Carroll, I
- 34:24Speaker 3: got Willie Shaw, I got Tony Dungee.
- 34:27Speaker 5: You know what I'm saying, Like.
- 34:29Speaker 4: The best of the BA.
- 34:30Speaker 3: I mean, yeah, those people are like the best guys
- 34:34Speaker 3: in coaching, and I got the opportunity to play for them.
- 34:39Speaker 3: And I'm thinking, if I'm gonna give credit to anybody
- 34:42Speaker 3: for any amount of success that I had, I'm not.
- 34:46Speaker 5: I'm struggling until Pete comes.
- 34:48Speaker 3: Okay, Then Pete comes and then we go to bump
- 34:51Speaker 3: and run and he's telling me to do this, this, this,
- 34:53Speaker 3: and this, I do that that that, and all of
- 34:56Speaker 3: a sudden, I'm like, I'm I'm gonna watch I'm the
- 34:59Speaker 3: Pro Bowl, Like what happened here? How did this happen?
- 35:03Speaker 6: That's Pete. Yes, there's Pete from across the street. That's
- 35:10Speaker 6: what we are something the kind of names right coaches.
- 35:14Speaker 7: So well, I'm glad you said that because I'm going
- 35:17Speaker 7: to bring up didn't you? Did you have some nicknames
- 35:20Speaker 7: when you played for the Bills, Darryl?
- 35:22Speaker 6: Yes, I had a bunch of.
- 35:26Speaker 4: I've got to say this and you've got this is hilarious.
- 35:29Speaker 7: Did you have a cheering section at rich Stadium that
- 35:32Speaker 7: was called the Tally Whackers?
- 35:34Speaker 6: Yep, hands to go back and forth.
- 35:42Speaker 5: Yes, yes, I love the name that was.
- 35:50Speaker 6: So I got the name from. I got the name
- 35:53Speaker 6: from Jerry Trenton in West Virginia. I got it there
- 35:58Speaker 6: because he's said, every time I see you, you go
- 36:05Speaker 6: and you knocked out of somebody. So that's what he
- 36:10Speaker 6: started calling me. Why then it became a dolly.
- 36:13Speaker 4: Wally Walkers, so amazing.
- 36:16Speaker 5: How come you didn't have a cheering section, Carl, I wasn't.
- 36:19Speaker 5: I wasn't that big.
- 36:21Speaker 3: Oh my gosh, how wasn't as big as Tally.
- 36:26Speaker 6: I wouldn't that big at all. I was just having fun.
- 36:29Speaker 6: You gotta realize when we played football called it was
- 36:34Speaker 6: about having fun. It was about enjoying each other. It
- 36:37Speaker 6: was about enjoying the competition of beating the guy and
- 36:40Speaker 6: then turning around and saying I was my way, She
- 36:45Speaker 6: did know it and slid explode so much.

- 38:21Speaker 2: Now back to the conversation.
- 38:24Speaker 3: So, when your first Pro Bowl? All right, what year
- 38:28Speaker 3: was it? What was your first Pro Bowl? Okay, nineteen
- 38:32Speaker 3: ninety When you got there, what was the most interesting
- 38:38Speaker 3: takeaway when you started? Because you know, when my first one,
- 38:45Speaker 3: when I got there, I was like, the first thing
- 38:47Speaker 3: I wanted to figure out was like, Okay, how good
- 38:50Speaker 3: am I compared to the rest of these people who
- 38:52Speaker 3: are supposedly the best players in the league that particular year.
- 38:58Speaker 3: I and I and I felt like when I when
- 39:00Speaker 3: I got done with it that I felt like I
- 39:06Speaker 3: was I was no different than any of them. Like
- 39:09Speaker 3: I didn't see anybody like I thought Darryl Green was
- 39:11Speaker 3: special and I think that's great. Yeah, but yeah I
- 39:18Speaker 3: could see them and I can say, Okay, well, you
- 39:20Speaker 3: know he's a little bit more of that. I got
- 39:21Speaker 3: a little bit more of that o him, and you
- 39:23Speaker 3: know you started. My first my first Pro Bowl, I
- 39:27Speaker 3: was it was a kind of a let me see
- 39:30Speaker 3: where I rank with all.
- 39:31Speaker 5: Of what everybody thinks are the best players? What?
- 39:35Speaker 3: What was what was your what was your thought when
- 39:38Speaker 3: you first got there and you start looking around at
- 39:40Speaker 3: the at the players.
- 39:41Speaker 8: I was.
- 39:47Speaker 6: Because okay, I had been the first alternate seven times
- 39:51Speaker 6: before not so and then see when you're the first
- 39:55Speaker 6: altin that nobody gets hurt. You don't go. You'll get
- 39:58Speaker 6: credit for it. That's why they changed that rule going
- 40:00Speaker 6: into the Hall of Fame, because I was thinking about it,
- 40:04Speaker 6: because I never because back in the day, you got
- 40:07Speaker 6: to remember outside linebackers, there were four of us on
- 40:11Speaker 6: the field, but outside linebackers that was the position that
- 40:15Speaker 6: everybody was playing. So now you got the best athletes
- 40:20Speaker 6: on the field of trying to do the best things
- 40:22Speaker 6: for their team and in order to and when you're
- 40:25Speaker 6: considered in that group, and then you look around and
- 40:31Speaker 6: you see, okay, everybody else in this group is getting
- 40:34Speaker 6: this X and Y and Z, but you're still getting B.
- 40:38Speaker 6: So now I'm having a fit because everybody else did.
- 40:42Speaker 6: I'm in the group with it's getting everything else, and
- 40:47Speaker 6: I'm still sitting back here, sick in class. I ain't
- 40:50Speaker 6: get a first class ticket. I'm a little upset. I'm
- 40:55Speaker 6: a little upset because now, let's say this has been
- 40:58Speaker 6: ten years and I didn't get I didn't make all
- 41:01Speaker 6: proing to what I mean, didn't make the problem to
- 41:04Speaker 6: my eighth year in the league, seventh year in the league.
- 41:08Speaker 6: M yod No, it was about my eighth.
- 41:11Speaker 5: Yeah, I think I was up there like that too.
- 41:15Speaker 6: So I'm like, wait a minute, bus w to beat it,
- 41:19Speaker 6: and I was like, okay, but that's fine. As long
- 41:23Speaker 6: as I keep winning, I don't tear. And then I
- 41:25Speaker 6: got to the point where as long as I won,
- 41:28Speaker 6: I was content. I was content with beating everybody game
- 41:32Speaker 6: by game, week by week. And because I went through
- 41:36Speaker 6: the two and fourteens, the four and twelves, the six
- 41:39Speaker 6: and eight in the two and fourteens because I went
- 41:42Speaker 6: through that. When I got to the other side, oh boy,
- 41:46Speaker 6: it wasn't no where in the world I was gonna
- 41:48Speaker 6: go back. I'm sorry. From once I came, I will
- 41:51Speaker 6: not go back. But here I am in life from
- 41:57Speaker 6: whence I came. I went back. I went back in
- 41:59Speaker 6: the same house I grew up in and please get that. No,
- 42:02Speaker 6: I'm going out again.
- 42:05Speaker 4: I want to get Darryl and Sterling sharp in person.
- 42:09Speaker 7: On this show in the studio because your philosophies are yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 42:23Speaker 7: very well.
- 42:23Speaker 4: Yes yes he uh.
- 42:27Speaker 3: I had gone to this Hall of Fame induction, like
- 42:29Speaker 3: he he had invited me to go, so rab what
- 42:32Speaker 3: he does is like so I So after his induction,
- 42:36Speaker 3: me and my son went and we came home and
- 42:40Speaker 3: he calls me on Monday and says, bro, I'm gonna
- 42:42Speaker 3: be on the show. Like he just callsed me, said
- 42:47Speaker 3: he wants to be on the show. So he comes
- 42:49Speaker 3: and he's in studio and man, he was, he he was.
- 42:54Speaker 5: It was an amazing kind of a thing.
- 42:56Speaker 3: We were the first show that he came on after
- 42:58Speaker 3: him being him coming back home, going heading home, he
- 43:05Speaker 3: stopped here to come on the show.
- 43:08Speaker 5: And talk about his induction and the relevance of.
- 43:12Speaker 4: Even had his jacket all.
- 43:13Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, he even had a jacket.
- 43:15Speaker 4: Jacket, which was pretty cool. He wouldn't let me wear.
- 43:17Speaker 6: Daryl, No, no, no, no, no shoulders.
- 43:26Speaker 5: We don't. And I'm sorry.
- 43:30Speaker 7: To get religious exactly.
- 43:34Speaker 4: That would have been blasphemous. I get it.
- 43:35Speaker 3: See, And I would have known not to ask, because
- 43:39Speaker 3: if I didn't earn one, I know, I can't wear
- 43:41Speaker 3: one like me.
- 43:44Speaker 7: You like cold, said it was cold in the studio.
- 43:51Speaker 6: Come on there, I was standing there. I was standing
- 43:55Speaker 6: there and shut it in my chatter nothing at all.
- 44:01Speaker 5: I ain't you're right, You're right at least have you
- 44:05Speaker 5: got something?
- 44:06Speaker 4: Oh well, I was just going to ask. I know.
- 44:08Speaker 7: In the intro, Daryl, we talked about you being in
- 44:10Speaker 7: the four Super Bowls with the Bills.
- 44:12Speaker 4: What was it like playing in that era? In four
- 44:14Speaker 4: Super Bowls?
- 44:17Speaker 6: God, the most exciting thing that happened to me in
- 44:21Speaker 6: my entirety, other than my kids being born. That's it.
- 44:27Speaker 6: That was it. I mean, you got to think about it.
- 44:30Speaker 6: I'm out playing a freaking football game. Everybody in the
- 44:35Speaker 6: world is watching everybody because the world is at war.
- 44:41Speaker 6: Right where at War. They got black Hawk helicopters up
- 44:45Speaker 6: on the top of the scoreboard, on the top of
- 44:47Speaker 6: the stadiums. Whitney, you se sis the national anthem?
- 44:51Speaker 4: Nice?
- 44:51Speaker 6: I mean, you tell me, what else where else would
- 44:55Speaker 6: you rather be than right here, right now? And trust me,
- 45:01Speaker 6: Martin's never spoke true words.
- 45:05Speaker 5: I can't even I can't.
- 45:07Speaker 6: I don't know. I don't even know. I mean, to
- 45:12Speaker 6: be honest with you, it was almost like I was
- 45:16Speaker 6: floating because here's the thing. I looked around. I've seen helicopters,
- 45:21Speaker 6: I've seen people with guns and the ladies things in
- 45:25Speaker 6: national anthem. And I get to go play football against
- 45:28Speaker 6: my former teammates.
- 45:30Speaker 4: Wow, I'm playing.
- 45:33Speaker 6: To get Jeff Hart Styler and my Fox in a
- 45:36Speaker 6: super Bowl.
- 45:36Speaker 4: That's crazy.
- 45:38Speaker 6: That's crazy. You got three kids from West Virginia playing
- 45:41Speaker 6: the marandamn game. Think about that. How ironic is that?
- 45:46Speaker 6: And they talk about we didn't have any talent in
- 45:48Speaker 6: West Virginia.
- 45:51Speaker 5: That has not been a story. That should that, I
- 45:54Speaker 5: mean that should be a story.
- 45:56Speaker 6: Yeah, But forget that they say that there's no talent there.
- 46:02Speaker 6: We're still in the Super Bowl, right, Wow, three kids
- 46:06Speaker 6: from the same damn school. Mm hmm.
- 46:09Speaker 4: Yeah, that that's that that needs to be That story
- 46:12Speaker 4: needs to be told. It needs to be told.
- 46:14Speaker 3: And you know, and I'll add that just to throw
- 46:16Speaker 3: Marshall into the into the mix, you know, just not
- 46:19Speaker 3: just yeah, I just don't want it to be all
- 46:21Speaker 3: wv U. Marshall has had some very very notable successful players.
- 46:32Speaker 5: In the NFL.
- 46:33Speaker 3: Yes, Hall of Famers all of that, and yes, where is.
- 46:40Speaker 5: Where is the celebration for where is?
- 46:46Speaker 6: Here is none mine. We're all world. We don't need that,
- 46:52Speaker 6: we don't need that validation. We were We were our
- 46:56Speaker 6: own validation once we got there. That's just we were.
- 47:01Speaker 6: We were that little kid did they didn't have to
- 47:04Speaker 6: have it, didn't have his mommy walk in the street
- 47:06Speaker 6: to walk him to school every day because he was
- 47:08Speaker 6: gonna get beat up. We walked to school by ourself.
- 47:12Speaker 6: We're our brothers and our sisters.
- 47:14Speaker 5: Ye, that's me.
- 47:15Speaker 6: So that's all today. We're we're that, We're that odd kid.
- 47:21Speaker 6: We're that kid did nobody but again, anybody wants but
- 47:26Speaker 6: nobody wanted to trust, nobody wanted to fight with.
- 47:28Speaker 5: But again, but again, though Darryl, like.
- 47:32Speaker 3: You build that individual confidence up, you have that strong
- 47:37Speaker 3: belief in yourself. No matter what anybody else is gonna
- 47:41Speaker 3: say or do, You're gonna have to.
- 47:42Speaker 5: You're gonna have to. You're gonna have to make me.
- 47:45Speaker 3: You're gonna have to do something to make me think
- 47:47Speaker 3: that I'm not what I think I am.
- 47:50Speaker 6: That's it. My dad always used to tell me, son,
- 47:52Speaker 6: you can do anything you want to. You put your
- 47:54Speaker 6: mind to it. That you can't do. He said, Hey,
- 47:59Speaker 6: you think you want to do it, go do it.
- 48:02Speaker 6: I'm gonna sit here and watch you go do it.
- 48:05Speaker 6: We'll sit here. Rabi.
- 48:06Speaker 4: You got Yeah, you had a good daddy.
- 48:09Speaker 6: And yeah, I did. I had a damn good one.
- 48:12Speaker 5: Yes, And and and I talked about my dad, you know.
- 48:15Speaker 5: And and.
- 48:17Speaker 3: My dad missed one game from youth football to marshall
- 48:24Speaker 3: of my games no matter what I was, you know.
- 48:27Speaker 3: And and we and we had to have conversation about
- 48:30Speaker 3: the game the next morning. You know, he'd sit down
- 48:33Speaker 3: and tell me about not the good place, just the
- 48:35Speaker 3: bad place. When you have that kind of thing, you
- 48:38Speaker 3: might hate it in the moment, but it's but it
- 48:42Speaker 3: is special.
- 48:44Speaker 5: It's so valuable.
- 48:46Speaker 7: Yeah, speaking of family, I'm speaking of family, Daryl. I'm
- 48:53Speaker 7: going to bring this up and if I'm wrong, just
- 48:56Speaker 7: just go along with it, Just pretend it's true, Okay, Okay, no, So,
- 49:01Speaker 7: so I don't know if people know that you are
- 49:03Speaker 7: the cousin of former New York Yankee Derek Jeter and
- 49:07Speaker 7: your brother is John Tally and he also played for
- 49:09Speaker 7: the Mountaineers and professionally with the Browns. What's it like
- 49:13Speaker 7: coming from such like a an athletically talented family, like
- 49:17Speaker 7: I bet the reunions are awesome.
- 49:18Speaker 4: You guys have all these people kind.
- 49:20Speaker 6: Of I ain't have the monkey's up undern't said Tree?
- 49:31Speaker 7: Yeah, so I'm sure you you you come in close
- 49:34Speaker 7: contact with Derek, are you guys closer?
- 49:36Speaker 9: No?
- 49:36Speaker 6: No, no, no, no, he's born from a he comes
- 49:39Speaker 6: from a different althlete my dad's side of the family. Okay,
- 49:44Speaker 6: he's the Jeter part. My grandmother's side. Uh. They actually
- 49:48Speaker 6: moved from Union, South Carolina out west, Okay, because that's
- 49:52Speaker 6: what my dad's originally from Union, South Carolina, and he
- 49:56Speaker 6: came to Cleveland, and they moved from Cleveland. He's staged
- 50:00Speaker 6: things when everybody else went west. Okay, where is mom?
- 50:05Speaker 6: And my grandmother stayed here because they were living in Youngstown.
- 50:09Speaker 4: Mm hmm. And You and John are place obviously, right,
- 50:12Speaker 4: You and John?
- 50:13Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, the one he's always been my brother. I
- 50:16Speaker 6: don't think he's changed one bit. The only thing he's
- 50:19Speaker 6: the only thing he's done is gotten a little bit
- 50:20Speaker 6: bigger and a little fatter.
- 50:23Speaker 4: Happens to all of us, That.
- 50:27Speaker 6: Happen all of us.
- 50:30Speaker 5: We don't have it all. You don't have to happen
- 50:32Speaker 5: all of it.
- 50:32Speaker 6: Okay, okay, because it ain't happening to me.
- 50:36Speaker 5: That's good.
- 50:39Speaker 6: You know the one that's gonna tell you know, you
- 50:41Speaker 6: don't happen all of us because I ain't including all.
- 50:46Speaker 4: Oh my gosh.
- 50:47Speaker 5: All right, so we're we're we're almost out of time.
- 50:50Speaker 3: But I want to ask this question, just just because
- 50:54Speaker 3: it just popped into my head. Who was the most
- 50:57Speaker 3: impactful coach to to provide you with the skill set
- 51:08Speaker 3: and the success that you had individually as a player.
- 51:11Speaker 5: Who would you be? Who would be the coach that
- 51:13Speaker 5: you would give the most credit to?
- 51:15Speaker 6: And why m I would have to be me wrestling
- 51:25Speaker 6: through back to two people, Okay, Very Tranquil who Bob Stemmens,
- 51:35Speaker 6: Gary Tranquil, who was my defensive coordinator one to call me?
- 51:40Speaker 6: Why hm hmm? Him and Bob Simmons, who also went
- 51:45Speaker 6: to my high school and set all records there that
- 51:49Speaker 6: I broke. And then I came to he was coaching
- 51:52Speaker 6: at Toledo and I was at West Virginia and coach
- 51:55Speaker 6: nieland and coached me before brought him in because he
- 51:58Speaker 6: played for Coachneeland. He and Phil veel Piano at Bowling
- 52:01Speaker 6: Green as outside linebackers, and he came to West Virginia
- 52:05Speaker 6: as the outside linebackers coach. And where I really honed
- 52:10Speaker 6: my skill was between Gary Trenquel and Bob State Bob Simmons.
- 52:16Speaker 6: Those are the two guys that were responsible for honing
- 52:19Speaker 6: my craft. The one that was responsible for phoning me mentally,
- 52:27Speaker 6: this is the one that check was Walk Corey. He
- 52:31Speaker 6: was a former linebacker that played for the Kansas City Chiefs.
- 52:35Speaker 6: He was my defensive coordinator in Buffalo after I gotten
- 52:40Speaker 6: rid of three other defensive coordinators before Walk hooned in
- 52:45Speaker 6: and the way Walk spoke and talked to you. And
- 52:50Speaker 6: then the funny part is I became friendly with Willy
- 52:53Speaker 6: Lanier from played with Willy. Walk Corey was the outside
- 52:59Speaker 6: linebacker on the team that lost his job to Buck
- 53:02Speaker 6: Buchanon when Buck Buchanty came to the Kansas City Chiefs,
- 53:06Speaker 6: and everybody knows what the rest of that is. That
- 53:08Speaker 6: one went like, so Walk bought me a live and
- 53:15Speaker 6: he would sit there and joke with Cornelius and I
- 53:19Speaker 6: about different things in different ways that get things done,
- 53:22Speaker 6: and tell us, well, that guy Eric get can't do it.
- 53:25Speaker 6: We need to get a guy. We need to get
- 53:27Speaker 6: our number fifty six to be able to do with
- 53:28Speaker 6: their number fifty six dollars. We need to get our
- 53:31Speaker 6: number ninety seven to do with their number sixty six?
- 53:33Speaker 6: Does we need? So Walk he motivated Cornelius and II,
- 53:40Speaker 6: and then he gave us the ability to change what
- 53:44Speaker 6: we were doing on the fly. So let's say, like,
- 53:49Speaker 6: if you're playing a defense and they motion one guy
- 53:53Speaker 6: one way, they mostly in or out. You could change
- 53:57Speaker 6: the defense or stay in the same thing. It's up
- 54:00Speaker 6: to you. You make the decision on the field whether
- 54:04Speaker 6: you want to play that or play something different. Now
- 54:07Speaker 6: how many coaches give you a decision choose? And then
- 54:15Speaker 6: he had four linebackers that we could really interchange me
- 54:20Speaker 6: or it is shame and Ray Bentley and Scott Radisson.
- 54:23Speaker 6: I mean, he just moved us around and we were
- 54:26Speaker 6: just like little and Meba just going all over the
- 54:28Speaker 6: place and really enjoyed playing for him. Because here's the thing,
- 54:35Speaker 6: he's a linebacker. He has the same mindset you have.
- 54:38Speaker 6: Think about that. Think about that when you got a linebacker,
- 54:43Speaker 6: a guy that's played the position as your coach, and
- 54:48Speaker 6: he sees what you see on the field, and you
- 54:50Speaker 6: come off the field and you say, well, but what
- 54:52Speaker 6: about what we just ad He said, no, but you
- 54:54Speaker 6: got to do is get him there and he had
- 54:56Speaker 6: the answers right there right away. And that's what thought.
- 55:01Speaker 6: That's what he taught me. He taught me how to
- 55:03Speaker 6: be able to coach and make changes on the move
- 55:07Speaker 6: and be good and know what you're doing.
- 55:09Speaker 4: That was awesome.
- 55:11Speaker 7: So so Darryl, like Carl said, we're about to run
- 55:14Speaker 7: out of time, but tell us what you're doing now
- 55:16Speaker 7: now you know these days, anything in particular that you
- 55:19Speaker 7: want to talk about that you're doing.
- 55:22Speaker 6: Not yet, I don't want to couch.
- 55:25Speaker 5: I don't.
- 55:27Speaker 3: Do it.
- 55:28Speaker 6: Do it.
- 55:29Speaker 3: And and and I'll end with with to your point
- 55:32Speaker 3: about that coach that that impacts your career. Pete Carroll,
- 55:38Speaker 3: the interesting thing about him was, I'm I'm almost one
- 55:43Speaker 3: hundred percent. Sure he's never played defensive back. He definitely
- 55:46Speaker 3: has probably never played corner.
- 55:48Speaker 6: No but pizza hippies.
- 55:49Speaker 5: But but yeah, he really is. And and and then he.
- 55:59Speaker 3: Used to tell us like all he wanted us to
- 56:03Speaker 3: do was to make plays. His whole thing was, Look,
- 56:06Speaker 3: you're gonna get beat. You're gonna get beat deep, that's
- 56:08Speaker 3: gonna happen. Yep, somebody's gonna catch the ball on you.
- 56:12Speaker 5: That's that.
- 56:13Speaker 3: That's gonna happen with everybody that you play with. But
- 56:18Speaker 3: what I need you to do and how you become
- 56:20Speaker 3: great is to make plays. And I had never no
- 56:24Speaker 3: one had ever freed me up to say, like, all
- 56:27Speaker 3: they want me to do is just make place. They're
- 56:29Speaker 3: not gonna yell at me because somebody beats me for
- 56:31Speaker 3: a touchdown. You you got Andre Reid out there, Like
- 56:34Speaker 3: how you gonna stop him all day?
- 56:36Speaker 5: It's just not gonna happen.
- 56:37Speaker 3: You got sterling sharp, You're not gonna keep him from
- 56:39Speaker 3: catching the ball.
- 56:41Speaker 6: That's just like I told him. I said, that's just

- 56:46Speaker 6: a minute. Oh you know, yeah, you had to get
- 56:53Speaker 6: over that. Yeah, that's what God that. That's what. It
- 56:56Speaker 6: took me a while to understand that the DVS what through.
- 57:00Speaker 6: It was like, wait, man, man, see, I was just
- 57:03Speaker 6: I was just eating. I just wanted to beat the
- 57:05Speaker 6: guy up. All you did was make me want to
- 57:08Speaker 6: beat you. And that, yeah, I had myself and if
- 57:16Speaker 6: I couldn't catch you, I'd run you over the corneas

- 58:01Speaker 6: first time something went wrong, somebody did something stupid. One
- 58:03Speaker 6: of my guys, yeah, told him about it. That's like
- 58:06Speaker 6: we had a game, the Houston oiler game. We had
- 58:11Speaker 6: Steinfleld and them. We're just grabbing Bruce and Freddy by
- 58:13Speaker 6: the face mask. Uh. I came from sixty sixty yards away.
- 58:20Speaker 6: I told him to stop. They didn't stop. Right from

- 58:48Speaker 6: They cut. They cut Bruce in the grabb him about
- 58:51Speaker 6: the face mask, and it had Freddy by the face
- 58:53Speaker 6: mask swinging him around. I told him, oh no, And
- 58:56Speaker 6: Marv made his famous saying they lost Martin Park Kettle,
- 59:00Speaker 6: we lost miss the Universe in miss USA because they
- 59:03Speaker 6: kicked both Bruce missing me out of the gay for fighting.
- 59:06Speaker 6: Oh oh yeah, I ran from sixty yards. If I
- 59:10Speaker 6: told you gonna do that, they're gonna do something I
- 59:13Speaker 6: can't from sixty yards. It ain't seen me running on film.
- 59:16Speaker 3: Yeah, that's that that that can't get any It was
- 59:21Speaker 3: like Forrest, go yeah, getting down there, get get your

- 59:33Speaker 6: little different. And I told things cycling them not to

- 1:00:11Speaker 6: You can go up to that line, but you bet
- 1:00:14Speaker 6: not crossing. I'm not a little kid to get up
- 1:00:19Speaker 6: to the line touch it. And I'm gonna say.
