- 0:02Speaker 1: Hello, and welcome to real Is Children's Story Hour. As
- 0:05a reminder, rail Is is a reading service intended for
- 0:08people who are blind or of other disabilities that make
- 0:11it difficult to read printed material. Today we will be
- 0:15reading from various books on famous women. Your reader today
- 0:19is Diane. We will begin with the story I Am
- 0:23Frida Carlo. It was published by Doll Books for Young Readers,
- 0:30an imprint of Penguin Random House, and it has a
- 0:36copyright year of twenty twenty one. The author's Brad Meltzer.
- 0:43I am Frida Kailo. I was born in Mexico in
- 0:48this house. Later we painted a blue and called it
- 0:50at La Casa Azul, the Blue House. It stood out
- 0:55from everything else. Isn't that beautiful? When I was six
- 0:58years old, I got disease called polio. Made my right
- 1:02leg thinner and shorter than my left leg. I had
- 1:05to stay in my room for nine months. When I
- 1:08finally got out, kids would make fun of me. I
- 1:11tried hiding my leg under long skirts or by wearing
- 1:14extra socks. It didn't help. Thankfully, I always had a
- 1:19special place where I could escape. In my room, I
- 1:22breathe into the window pane and draw a door. The
- 1:25door let me enter my imagination. There. I would visit
- 1:33a dairy cob pen soong. I entered through the oh
- 1:37would take me down, down, down inside the earth, where
- 1:40my imaginary friend was always waiting for me. I don't
- 1:44remember what she looked like or even what color she was,
- 1:47but together we would laugh and dance. I tell her
- 1:50all my problems and she would listen. That place made
- 1:54me happy, and when I'd blur the door with my hand,
- 1:57it would disappear. It's amazing what you can do with
- 2:00your imagination to strengthen my leg My dad encouraged me
- 2:04to play sports, soccer, wrestling, boxing, swimming. I did it all.
- 2:11One of the best things my dad shared with me
- 2:13was his curiosity about the world. As a photographer, he
- 2:17take me along when he went to shoot photos. He
- 2:21also liked to paint while he did his watercolors. I
- 2:23collect pebbles, plants, and even insects. I bring them home,
- 2:27looking up each item in my dad's books and examining
- 2:31them under a miscope. Look around, Beauty is everywhere. At fourteen,
- 2:39I went to the National Preparatory School, the best high
- 2:43school in Mexico. The two thousand students. I was one
- 2:47of only thirty five girls at school. We were supposed
- 2:49to dress and behave a certain way. I dressed differently.
- 2:54The wealthy mothers would take one look at me and
- 2:56yelle to other students, I was fascinating. My closest friends
- 3:02were a group of kids called the Cochushas, which is
- 3:06like a hot pepper. We were smart and loved to read,
- 3:10but sometimes we got in trouble, like when we rode
- 3:12a real donkey down the hallway. One day, a famous
- 3:15painter named Diego Riviera was hired to create a mural
- 3:19in our auditorium. I watched him for three hours. I
- 3:23didn't know it at the time, but my hardest days
- 3:26were coming. At eighteen, I was in a terrible accident
- 3:29when I trolley smashed into the bus I was riding.
- 3:33Someone on the bus had been carrying paint, so my
- 3:35body was covered in powdered gold. A month after the accident,
- 3:42I came home from the hospital a full body cast.
- 3:46My spinal column was broken in three places. The doctors
- 3:49literally had to put me back together. The paint in
- 3:52my leg and foot were terrible, and I could barely
- 3:54move my arms. But I survived, I didn't get many visitors.
- 4:00I realized that I wanted to be friends only with
- 4:02people who like me just the way I am. I
- 4:06knew my life had changed. I would no longer be
- 4:09a doctor. Instead, as I learned to lie still, I
- 4:15began to paint. Since I couldn't sit up in bed,
- 4:18my mom asked a carproom to make a special easel
- 4:20for me. I grabbed my father's brushes. Then I began.
- 4:24I worked hard for in over books about art history.
- 4:27My first paintings weren't great, even tour one up because
- 4:31I was so unhappy with it. But with my mirror,
- 4:34I kept going, painting what I saw. I paint myself
- 4:37because I am so often alone, and because I am
- 4:40the subject that I know best. As soon as I
- 4:43could go outside, I brought my paintings to Diego Rivieria,
- 4:47the famous pain I had met years earlier. Over time,
- 4:51my portraits became more complex. I began adding pieces of
- 4:55local Mexican art and history, textiles and incredent intricate carvings
- 5:01to show people who I was. Eventually, Diego and I
- 5:05got married. We traveled to America, to places like San Francisco,
- 5:10New York and Detroit means some of the wealthiest people
- 5:13in the world. Just like in high school, some people
- 5:17would insult my clothing. My time away made me realize
- 5:21that my favorite place of all was home. Back in Mexico,
- 5:26I embraced all the things I loved, my heritage, animals,
- 5:32and of course painting. Back then, women were expected to
- 5:34be quiet and feminine. I wasn't either of those things.
- 5:40In addition to painting, I became a teacher, a professor.
- 5:44On the first day, that's exactly what they did. They
- 5:47painted me. The pain for my accident never went away.
- 5:51Some days it was so bad I could barely stand.
- 5:53Even then, I took my students on field trips. As
- 5:56my health got worse, my fore most committed students, those Frido's,
- 6:01came to my Casa Azul for their lessons. Eventually I
- 6:06sent them out into the world to paint murals on
- 6:09nearby laundries in taverns. To honor my work. A gallery
- 6:13owner began planning my first ever one woman show in Mexico.
- 6:18Was so sick she was worried I might miss it,
- 6:21so they set up my bed and made me part
- 6:23of the exhibit. It was total chaos and absolutely beautiful.
- 6:29Tragedy nearly took my life, but it couldn't take my spirit.
- 6:32Fighting back wasn't easy, especially when people make fun of
- 6:35how I looked and where I was from. But I
- 6:39was determined to see things differently. My face, my clothes,
- 6:43my country, even my paint. These are the colors on
- 6:46my canvas. They don't look like anyone else's, and they shouldn't.
- 6:50That's the best part. Your picture is uniquely yours Today,
- 6:56Free You is considered one of the world's greatest artists,
- 6:59and La Costo Zoul is now the Frieda Calo Museum,
- 7:04open to the public. Museum as this the last pain
- 7:09she ever did, Viva la vita, which means long live love.
- 7:12Her husband, Diego Rivera, eventually said she's a better painter
- 7:17than I am. She is proof that no one can
- 7:21ever define you, no matter how you look. Her hair
- 7:24looks like a pretzel in this one. That's not a pretzel,
- 7:28It's an infinite infinity sign, something that ties us together
- 7:34and lives forever. Art is like life. It's rarely what
- 7:40it first appears. Instead of following a straight path, your
- 7:43life in your art will twist and turn taking you
- 7:46on unexpected journeys. It's messy and bold and scary and fun,
- 7:51but it's all part of your picture. A magnificent self portrait.
- 7:55I am freeda colo, and I know that the most
- 7:59beautiful thing is you, just as you are. Our next
- 8:04books will be Doctor Seuss books, and our first one
- 8:09is titled One Fish Too Fish, Redfish, bluefish, and it
- 8:14was published by Random House Children's Books, a division of
- 8:17Random House Incorporated. It has a copywriter of nineteen ninety
- 8:22to nineteen eighty eight and the author is Doctor Seuss.

- 8:34new fish. This one has a little star, This one
- 8:37has a little car. Say what a lot of fish?
- 8:40These are yes, Some are red and some are blue.
- 8:44Some are old and some are new. Some are sad,
- 8:47and some are glad, and some are very very bad.
- 8:51Why are they sad and glad and bad? I do
- 8:54not know. Go ask your dad. Some are thin and
- 8:58some are fat. The fat one has a yellow hat.
- 9:01From there to here, from here to Their funny things
- 9:05are everywhere. Here are some who like to run. They
- 9:08run for fun in the hot, hot sun. Oh me,
- 9:12oh my, oh me, Oh my, what a lot of
- 9:14funny things go by. Some have two feet and some
- 9:18have four, Some have six feet and some have more.
- 9:22Where do they come from? I can't say, but I
- 9:25bet they come a long long way. We see them come,
- 9:29we see them go. Some are fast and some are slow.
- 9:32Some are high and some are low. Not one of
- 9:35them is like another. Don't ask us, why go ask
- 9:39your mother? Say? Look at his fingers? One, two, three,
- 9:43How many fingers do I see? One? Two, three, four, five, six, seven,
- 9:49eight nine ten? He has eleven eleven. This is something new.
- 9:54I wish I had eleven. Two. Bomp bomp? Did you
- 9:58ever write a wanmp? We have a wump with just
- 10:01one hump, but we know a man called mister Gump.
- 10:05Mister Gump has a seven hump wump. So if you
- 10:08like to go bump bump, just jump on the hump
- 10:11of the wump of Gump. Who am I? My name
- 10:15is Ned. I do not like my little bed. This
- 10:18is no good, This is not right. My feets stick
- 10:21out a bed all night, and when I pull them in,
- 10:24oh dear, my head sticks out of bed. Up here.
- 10:28We like our bike, It is made for three. Our
- 10:30mic sits up in back. You see. We like our mic,
- 10:34and this is why Mike does all the work. When
- 10:37the hills get high. Hell there, Ned, how do you do?
- 10:41Tell me? Tell me what is new? How are things
- 10:44in your little bed? What is new? Please tell me, Ned,
- 10:47I do not like this bed at all. A lot
- 10:50of things have come to call. A cow, a dog,
- 10:53a cat, a mouse. Oh what a bed? Oh what
- 10:56a house? Oh dear, oh dear, I cannot hear. Will
- 11:00you please come over near? Will you please look in
- 11:03my ear? There must be something there. I fear say. Look,
- 11:07a bird was in your ear, but he is out,
- 11:10so have no fear again your ear can hear, My dear,
- 11:14My head is old, My teeth are gold. The bird
- 11:18I like to hold my shoes off, my foot is cold.
- 11:21My shoes off, my foot is cold. I have a
- 11:24bird I like to hold. My head is old, my
- 11:27teeth are goat. And now my story is all told.
- 11:31We took a look. We saw a nook on his head.
- 11:34He had a hook on his hook. He had a
- 11:37book on His book was how to cook. We saw
- 11:40him sit and try to cook. He took a look
- 11:43at the book on the hook. But a nook can't read,
- 11:46So a nook can't cook, So what good do a
- 11:51nook is a hook cookbook? The moon was out and
- 11:55we saw some sheep. We saw some sheep take a
- 11:58walk in their sleep by the light of the moon,
- 12:00by the light of the star. They walked all night
- 12:03from near to far. I would never walk. I would
- 12:06take a car. I do not like this one so well.
- 12:10All he does is yell, yell, yell. Oh. I have
- 12:13this one about. When he comes in, I put him out.
- 12:16This one is quite an ass a mouse. I like
- 12:19to have him in the house. At our house we
- 12:21open cans. We have to open many cans, and that
- 12:25is why we have a zan's. A zan's for cans
- 12:28is very good. Have you a zans for cans? You should?
- 12:33I like to box, how I like to box? Oh,
- 12:36so every day I box a gox and yellow socks.
- 12:39Eye box, my gox, eyebox and yellow socks, box socks.
- 12:45It is fun to sing if you sing with the ying.
- 12:48My yin can sing like anything. I sing high and
- 12:51my ying sing slow, and we are not too bad.
- 12:54You know. This one, I think is called a yink.
- 12:58He likes to wink, and he likes to he likes
- 13:01to drink and drink and drink. The thing he likes
- 13:04to drink is ink. The ink he likes to drink
- 13:07his pink. He likes to wink and drink pink ink.
- 13:11So if you had a lot of ink, then you
- 13:13should get a ink. I think hop hop hoop. I
- 13:18am a yop. All I like to do is hop
- 13:21from fingertop to fingertop. I hop from left to right
- 13:24and then hop hop a hop right back again. I
- 13:28like to hop all day and night, from right to
- 13:30left and left to right. Why do I like to hop?
- 13:34Hop hop? I do not know. Go ask your pop.
- 13:38Brush brush, brush, brush, com comb, comb comb, blue hair
- 13:43is fun to brush and comb. All girls who like
- 13:46to brush and comb should have a pet like this
- 13:49at home. Who is this pet? Say? He is wet?
- 13:53You never yet met a pet? I bet as wet
- 13:56as they let this wet pet get? Did you ever
- 14:00fly height in bed? Did you ever walk with ten
- 14:03cats on your head? Did you ever milk this kind
- 14:06of cow? Well? We can do it, we know how
- 14:09you never did? You should? These things are fun and
- 14:12fun is good? Hello? Hello? Are you there? Hello? I
- 14:17called you up to say hello. I said hello, can
- 14:20you hear me, Joe? Oh no, I cannot hear your call.
- 14:24I cannot hear your call at all. This is not good,
- 14:27And I know why a mouse has cut the wire.
- 14:30Goodbye from near too far, from here to there, Funny
- 14:34things are everywhere. These yellow pets are called the zs.
- 14:39They make one hair up on their heads. Their hair
- 14:41grows fast, so fast they say they need a haircut
- 14:46every day. Who am I? My name is Dish on
- 14:49my hand. I have a dish. I have this dish
- 14:52to help me wish. When I wish to make a wish,
- 14:55I wave my hand with a big swish. Then I
- 14:58say I wish we were a fish, and I get
- 15:02fish right on my dish. So if you wish to
- 15:04wish a wish, you may swish for fish with mysh
- 15:08wish dish. At our house, we play out back. We
- 15:12play a game called Ring the Gack. Would you like
- 15:14to play this game? Come down? We had the only
- 15:18ghack in town. Look what we found in the park
- 15:21in the dark. We will take him home. We will
- 15:23call him Clark. He will live in our house. He
- 15:27will grow and grow. Will our mother like this? We
- 15:31don't know? And now good night. It is time to sleep,

- 20:12Our next book is called The Shape of Me and
- 20:14Other Stuff, and it was published by Random House Shunner's Books,
- 20:19a division of random House Incorporated. It has a copyright
- 20:23year of nineteen seventy three to nineteen ninety seven and
- 20:27it was written by doctor Seuss. The shape of You,
- 20:31the shape of Me, the shape of everything I see above,
- 20:35a balloon, a bed, a bike. No shapes are never
- 20:39ever quite alike. Just think about the shape of beans
- 20:42and flowers and mice and big machines. Just think about
- 20:46the shape of strings and elephants and other things, the
- 20:50shape of lips, the shape of ships, the shape of
- 20:54water when it drips, and the shape of camels, the
- 20:57shape of bees, and the wonderful shape the factor keys,
- 21:01and the shapes of spider webs and clothes. And speaking
- 21:05of shapes, now, just suppose suppose you were shaped like
- 21:09these or those, or shaped like a blog or a
- 21:13garden hose. Of all the shapes we might have been,
- 21:17I say hooray for the shapes worrying. Our next book
- 21:22is titled If You Think There's Nothing to Do, and
- 21:26it was published by Random House Junner's Books, a division
- 21:29of Penguin random House. It has a copyright year of
- 21:34nineteen eighty six to night Excuse Me, nineteen eighty six
- 21:39to twenty twenty four, and it was written by doctor Seuss.
- 21:45If you're a border, perhaps even blue, or if you
- 21:47think there's nothing to do, well, that's not the case,
- 21:51and I'll show you why. Here are some things you
- 21:53might like to try. You can juggle some books, or
- 21:57you can read them, balance casts on your head, or
- 22:02pet them and feed them. You can purchase a tank
- 22:05fill it with fish, a turtle, a snail, some plants
- 22:08if you wish. But when you feed fish, do not
- 22:11give them a lot, or the fish may not fit
- 22:14in the tank that you've got. Do not lie around
- 22:18doing something at all. You can pick up the phone
- 22:21and give someone a call. You can stay in the
- 22:24house and fly kites in the hall, or try going
- 22:27outside to play ball on a wall. You might want
- 22:31to spruce up what you wear every day. You simply
- 22:34get started in your usual way. Then try adding feathers
- 22:38or some polka dot shoes, a small hat, a tall hat,
- 22:41whatever you choose. You can pet all bike, you can
- 22:45pad all boat. You can saddlell rne oh or ride
- 22:49with a goat. You can swim in a pool on
- 22:51a day that is hot, or skate on the ice
- 22:54on a day that is not. Jump over a chair,
- 22:57bounce on a bed, swing through the air, stand on
- 23:00your head, sting on your head. I think you'll agree
- 23:04changes the perspective of all that you see. Find some
- 23:08things that go bang, find a thing that goes boom,
- 23:11and a thing that goes toot. Now march out of
- 23:14the room. You can play tic tac toe with your
- 23:17hands or your feet. Sometimes you will win, sometimes you
- 23:21will get beat. Hide behind a curtain or up on
- 23:25a shelf. You can hide from a friend, but not
- 23:27from yourself. Here's an idea you can try. If you dare,
- 23:32count a tent as you stand with one foot in
- 23:35the air. If you are hungry, try better on bread
- 23:38or what about donuts. You could try those instead. You
- 23:42can scramble some eggs, or you can fry them green
- 23:45eggs and ham. I think you should try them. There
- 23:49are many things you can do with your voice. It's
- 23:51all up to you, so just to make a choice.
- 23:54You can talk, you can sing, you can whisper. You
- 23:58can shout to them, may get you sent out. You
- 24:02might want to grow plants. It's not very hard. Plants
- 24:05will grow in the house if you don't have a yard,
- 24:08but be careful with seeds. Do not fling them about,
- 24:11or you might be surprised where your garden will sprout.
- 24:15Try taking a pencil, a pen and some ink to
- 24:18write down your dreams and all that you think. You
- 24:22might want to paint what you see in your head.
- 24:25Don't paint on the wall. Use some paper instead. You
- 24:29can build something new using everyday things, little bricks, and
- 24:33sticks and blocks and strings. So I hope you can
- 24:37see what I told you is true. It is never
- 24:40the case that there's nothing to do. This concludes the
- 24:45Children's Story ire for today. Please join us next time
- 24:48as we will read more stories, fables and fairy tales.
