- 0:00Speaker 1: What up, y'all? It's your boy Kev on stage.
- 0:01Speaker 2: Tony Baker.
- 0:02Speaker 1: Welcome to the Bald Brothers. New and improved. Today we
- 0:07Speaker 1: talking hood classic. Menace 2 Society on the rewatch tip.
- 0:19Speaker 1: No pause. We revisiting it first. I gotta bring this up, Tony.
- 0:25Speaker 1: We're gonna talk about this later. But this movie is
- 0:29Speaker 1: Lorenz Tate.
- 0:31Speaker 2: Oh, before you get to that, you want me to
- 0:32Speaker 2: do the nerd? Oh, my bad.
- 0:34Speaker 1: Box office nerd time.
- 0:36Speaker 2: Nerd it up.
- 0:36Speaker 1: Minister Society, nerd up, Tom.
- 0:39Speaker 2: All right.
- 0:39Speaker 3: Minister Society came out May 26, 1993. Limited release when
- 0:42Speaker 3: it came out. It grossed $ 27. 7 million in 1993 on
- 0:49Speaker 3: a budget of 3.5.
- 0:50Speaker 2: Oh, nice. So he was just for inflation.
- 0:54Speaker 3: That's like $ 75 million today. That did well considering the
- 0:59Speaker 3: budget and all that. And yeah, man, Menace to Society
- 1:03Speaker 3: was the movie to watch when it came out.
- 1:06Speaker 1: And the place to be. As a person, not from
- 1:10Speaker 1: Los Angeles... Did tremendous damage.
- 1:14Speaker 2: Oh, man. When I left the movie theater, I felt
- 1:21Speaker 2: like everybody wanted a piece.
- 1:27Speaker 3: The energy that was created in that movie theater after
- 1:30Speaker 3: watching Menace to Society, everybody, well, shit.
- 1:34Speaker 2: What the fuck you want to do then?
- 1:39Speaker 3: You was ready to put hands and feet or bullets
- 1:42Speaker 3: on somebody after watching that movie.
- 1:46Speaker 2: It was a very dark energy that that movie created.
- 1:51Speaker 2: Everybody was hard.
- 1:53Speaker 1: Yeah. Tyron Turner.
- 1:56Speaker 2: We was hard after that.
- 1:57Speaker 1: Lorenz Tate.
- 1:59Speaker 2: We was bloodthirsty. Like in that scene where... Kane fought
- 2:04Speaker 2: that dude that tried to ride for his cousin. He
- 2:06Speaker 2: put hands on him. The dude who did the run.
- 2:09Speaker 2: Theater went crazy. Yeah, it was wild. We bloodthirsty.
- 2:14Speaker 1: He beat the brakes off him. He beat him down.
- 2:18Speaker 1: That cost him his life. I'm going to be dead.
- 2:22Speaker 2: Kane? Oh, yeah, it cost Kane his life.
- 2:25Speaker 1: He beat him up so much, he was like, I
- 2:27Speaker 1: got to kill you.
- 2:28Speaker 2: I got to kill you.
- 2:30Speaker 1: All right, before we dump in, Tom, I want to
- 2:34Speaker 1: cue this up because I know you're going to show
- 2:35Speaker 1: them some love. The Hughes Brothers killed it with this movie.
- 2:41Speaker 1: Tell the people the other things they know the Hughes
- 2:43Speaker 1: Brothers from.
- 2:43Speaker 2: For the Hughes Brothers, this was their directorial debut. They
- 2:46Speaker 2: also did music videos, and they also directed their president, president,
- 2:52Speaker 2: their follow-up to this. They did From Hell with Johnny Depp.
- 2:56Speaker 2: They also did The Book of Eli with Denzel Washington.
- 3:00Speaker 1: What a range of films.
- 3:01Speaker 2: Me personally, I feel like they don't make enough movies. Yeah, yeah.
- 3:05Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying? I feel like it's not enough.
- 3:08Speaker 2: We need more Hughes Brothers films. Yeah.
- 3:11Speaker 1: But imagine their first directorial debut is also Lorenz Tate's
- 3:15Speaker 1: first movie. I think he was 15 when he booked this.
- 3:18Speaker 2: Oh, wow. He's that young?
- 3:19Speaker 1: Might have been 17 when he shot. I was just
- 3:22Speaker 1: watching a video about it when we were doing the research.
- 3:26Speaker 1: Let's pull him up. Lorenz Tate. Because he looked super young.
- 3:31Speaker 2: He's 1975.
- 3:31Speaker 1: 75, 85.
- 3:31Speaker 2: So he was... No, that's not. 1975, 85, he was 10.
- 3:33Speaker 2: So 93, he was 18. So yeah, he was 17
- 3:44Speaker 2: when he shot this. Wow.
- 3:46Speaker 1: I was watching the movie. He's like, that's my first role.
- 3:47Speaker 1: I was 17. 17 years old. He looks 17.
- 3:50Speaker 2: He does look younger than he does.
- 3:51Speaker 1: That's what was so terrifying about him as O-Dog. The
- 3:55Speaker 1: first line, do y'all remember the first line of Men's Society? Hey, nigga,
- 4:00Speaker 1: there gonna be some pussy in this mother effer. Wow.
- 4:04Speaker 2: That's what they were saying during the new line.
- 4:07Speaker 1: On the black screen. I paused it. I said, I
- 4:10Speaker 1: don't remember.
- 4:11Speaker 2: We get right into it.
- 4:13Speaker 1: Tone. Okay, now let me tell you what was crazy
- 4:15Speaker 1: about Men's Society. You start off in the Asian convenience
- 4:23Speaker 1: store and the Korean people are following Kane and O-Dog around.
- 4:31Speaker 1: As I'm watching Medicine Society on the rewatch for the podcast,
- 4:36Speaker 1: in South Carolina, Rick Chow, Asian convenience store owner, is
- 4:42Speaker 1: following around a black child. And in my head, I'm like, yo,
- 4:46Speaker 1: 30 years has passed.
- 4:47Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 4:47Speaker 1: 33 years and nothing has changed. Somebody's still getting followed
- 4:55Speaker 1: around by an Asian store owner and ended in violence.
- 5:00Speaker 1: I mean, in real life, obviously the black child lost
- 5:03Speaker 1: his life. But in the movie, old dog kills the people.
- 5:11Speaker 1: And I forgot, Menace is, I'm sorry, Don't Be a Menace.
- 5:16Speaker 1: They parodied a lot of hood movies, but Menace to
- 5:20Speaker 1: Society was the one that they like.
- 5:25Speaker 2: That was the anchor.
- 5:26Speaker 1: That was the anchor movie that they followed. But yeah,
- 5:31Speaker 1: when he shot that person and then was like, I
- 5:37Speaker 1: was like, man.
- 5:39Speaker 2: He killed those people.
- 5:40Speaker 3: And in the original script, it was a little bit different.
- 5:44Speaker 3: He kills the man, but he lets the wife and
- 5:48Speaker 3: the child live.
- 5:50Speaker 2: Oh, really? There's a wife and a child in the
- 5:52Speaker 2: original script.
- 5:52Speaker 1: Okay, okay.
- 5:53Speaker 2: And then they just end up going back to wherever
- 5:55Speaker 2: they came from.
- 5:56Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 5:56Speaker 2: They didn't press no charges. They just left. Yeah. So
- 5:59Speaker 2: in the script, he just killed the guy.
- 6:03Speaker 3: And I thought that was an interesting shift.
- 6:06Speaker 2: And the movie is like both of y'all.
- 6:07Speaker 1: He not only killed him, Tone, he's showing the robbery
- 6:11Speaker 1: murder like a mixtape.
- 6:13Speaker 2: Yeah. He's going around. Look at what I did, y'all.
- 6:16Speaker 2: And they all in the community, man. Put that tape
- 6:19Speaker 2: back on. What? Put that tape back on. And it's
- 6:23Speaker 2: me murdering people? And you know what's funny?
- 6:26Speaker 3: Given his age, that's totally believable. I know we looking
- 6:31Speaker 3: at it with grown eyes.
- 6:32Speaker 2: We're like, you big dummy. But when you a teenager.
- 6:36Speaker 3: It's all about rep and your name in that environment
- 6:40Speaker 3: where we all outlaws, we showing the tape.
- 6:43Speaker 1: I'm showing the tape because that rep's gonna give me
- 6:47Speaker 1: credibility with the men. It's gonna get me coochie. In
- 6:52Speaker 1: that environment, you the hardest nigga out here. You getting coochie. Right?
- 6:58Speaker 1: And it's going to strike fear into the hearts of men?
- 7:00Speaker 2: Yep. And you 17? Get the word out.
- 7:03Speaker 1: With the braids?
- 7:05Speaker 2: Get the word out. I'll be killing people at convenience stores. Yes.
- 7:08Speaker 1: I'll kill you too. Ron Schell said people do it
- 7:11Speaker 1: for the gram today. That's the beauty of it. They
- 7:14Speaker 1: doing it for the gram.
- 7:16Speaker 2: They will be on a live stream unaliving people.
- 7:20Speaker 1: Absolutely. They're doing it now. There's so many cases that
- 7:23Speaker 1: Mel covers on I'm Not a Lawyer, but where the
- 7:28Speaker 1: people are beefing, and they'll go to the grave site,
- 7:31Speaker 1: we killed this nigga, dropped this nigga, your homeboy dead,
- 7:34Speaker 1: in music videos. Like, it's not uncommon today. It just,
- 7:38Speaker 1: in that time, you had to like, put the tape in.
- 7:41Speaker 1: You know, I'm going to show Clifton Powell the tape.
- 7:44Speaker 2: And it's sad. It sounds dumb, but it's sadly realistic.
- 7:49Speaker 3: And I like the fact that Lorenz Tate looks like that.
- 7:52Speaker 3: Because that's what these killers and these young kids are
- 7:55Speaker 3: looking like. They babies out here and they the scariest ones.
- 8:00Speaker 1: When Mel covered the Julio-Fulio trial, Tone, the dude looked
- 8:04Speaker 1: like our sons did in like eighth grade. Like what
- 8:08Speaker 1: you doing killing somebody?
- 8:11Speaker 2: Because they young.
- 8:12Speaker 1: And as a father, you know, like, even though you
- 8:15Speaker 1: see your son today, your mind takes him back 15
- 8:18Speaker 1: years ago. But he actually is the age. They are children,
- 8:23Speaker 1: you know, going off. But yeah. Also, this was just
- 8:27Speaker 1: interesting because we was rewatching this and You Got Served
- 8:31Speaker 1: in the same week. Megan Good and Jada Pinkett Smith
- 8:35Speaker 1: were the same age as actresses in both of those movies.
- 8:40Speaker 1: They were both 22 when they shot that. Jada Pinkett
- 8:45Speaker 1: Smith's character, what she had to deal with was making
- 8:49Speaker 1: good characters.
- 8:51Speaker 2: Making good just out here having a good time. I'm beautiful.
- 8:55Speaker 2: Hanging out.
- 8:56Speaker 1: Hanging out, dancing.
- 8:57Speaker 2: No kids to raise. Going to work. Milkshakes.
- 9:01Speaker 1: Jada Pinkett Smith got baby father problems.
- 9:05Speaker 2: Yeah, Anthony. Yeah. That was her son's name, Anthony.
- 9:10Speaker 1: She got sexual assault. She got her boyfriend getting murdered.
- 9:14Speaker 1: I got, first of all, black people been trying to
- 9:17Speaker 1: move to Atlanta.
- 9:18Speaker 2: To better their lives since Minister Society. I'm moving to Atlanta, man.
- 9:22Speaker 1: Jada Pinkett Smith said, my child make $ 36, 000. I'm moving
- 9:25Speaker 1: to Atlanta. And that was like, you got to go.
- 9:29Speaker 2: Atlanta is better there. It's Atlanta. It's Atlanta, man. Anything
- 9:33Speaker 2: better than here.
- 9:34Speaker 1: And Atlanta people, let us move there. Every time I
- 9:37Speaker 1: talk about wanting to move to Atlanta, we fool, we fool.
- 9:39Speaker 2: Move to McDonough. Nah. Man, the traffic is crazy in Atlanta,
- 9:45Speaker 2: so I get it. It might be the only place
- 9:47Speaker 2: that's worse than Atlanta. I hate the traffic in Atlanta.
- 9:49Speaker 2: To me, it feels worse.
- 9:50Speaker 1: It feels worse because.
- 9:52Speaker 2: We be on the back roads in traffic.
- 9:55Speaker 1: You be on the back roads far out. Yeah. In L.A.,
- 9:59Speaker 1: I can say 118, 210, 134.
- 10:05Speaker 2: Large pockets of freeway where there.
- 10:07Speaker 1: Won't be no traffic.
- 10:08Speaker 2: Right, right.
- 10:08Speaker 1: In Atlanta, man.
- 10:10Speaker 2: Everywhere.
- 10:11Speaker 1: On the plane!
- 10:13Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 10:13Speaker 1: Flying into Atlanta, you in traffic.
- 10:15Speaker 2: Traffic. Traffic on the way to Hartsfield, Jackson.
- 10:18Speaker 1: Airplane, you like this.
- 10:20Speaker 2: Slowing down in midair. We sat still midair. Like, man,
- 10:25Speaker 2: this traffic crazy. It's be like, McDonough is far out.
- 10:30Speaker 1: Why is there?
- 10:30Speaker 2: And then all the back roads. You think we don't
- 10:33Speaker 2: know about the back roads? We out here too. There's
- 10:36Speaker 2: traffic near the creek. We back here. This is worse
- 10:40Speaker 2: to me, man.
- 10:41Speaker 1: It's worse because LA, okay, 405, but you get that.
- 10:45Speaker 1: But there's, I don't deal with traffic every day in LA.
- 10:48Speaker 1: Like I can go, I came here, no traffic. I
- 10:50Speaker 1: can go to your house, no traffic. If I went
- 10:51Speaker 1: to Josh's house, no traffic. In Atlanta, what you mean
- 10:56Speaker 1: no traffic? You dealing with it.
- 10:58Speaker 2: I hate it, dog.
- 10:59Speaker 1: You dealing with the traffic. But anyway, back to menacing society.
- 11:03Speaker 2: But another thing in the script, Jada Pinkett had two
- 11:08Speaker 2: kids in the original script. Oh! Yeah, but this time,
- 11:11Speaker 2: you know, she just got Anthony. And Anthony, he got
- 11:14Speaker 2: to be a good six, seven?
- 11:16Speaker 1: Yeah, he was six, seven.
- 11:17Speaker 2: That means she had him. She was 15. She was young.
- 11:20Speaker 1: She was in the... And this is what I... This
- 11:22Speaker 1: is my favorite thing about men's society.
- 11:25Speaker 2: Where they.
- 11:26Speaker 1: Hughes Brothers did an amazing job. Kane's story. My dad
- 11:31Speaker 1: was a drug dealer. Sam Jackson, great.
- 11:32Speaker 2: Oh, he was great. Real cameo.
- 11:34Speaker 1: My dad's a drug dealer. My mom's in the life too.
- 11:38Speaker 1: They think it's funny to.
- 11:39Speaker 2: Give me beer and guns.
- 11:41Speaker 1: Nobody is stopping any of the grown folks. With Jada
- 11:46Speaker 1: Pinkett's son, same thing is happening. Kane is showing him
- 11:50Speaker 1: how to handle the gun. They on the porch. But
- 11:53Speaker 1: then somebody's like, yo, man, don't. The brother who, Sharif,
- 11:59Speaker 1: Chris Spencer's character in Don't Be A Menace. He's like
- 12:04Speaker 1: the voice of reason.
- 12:05Speaker 2: Right. And then he gets murdered.
- 12:08Speaker 1: And he's the one that's like, bro, don't do that
- 12:10Speaker 1: to him. Don't give him the beer. And you see
- 12:12Speaker 1: how the movie basically shows this is a cycle of violence.
- 12:16Speaker 1: And if somebody doesn't stop the cycle, if you don't
- 12:18Speaker 1: move to Atlanta, you don't have a Sharif in the case,
- 12:20Speaker 1: you're going to end up the same way Cain's dad
- 12:24Speaker 1: created Cain. Cain was going to be on the path
- 12:26Speaker 1: to creating Anthony to do the same thing. I feel
- 12:29Speaker 1: like that was such a good point to make. And
- 12:33Speaker 1: that was also a violent movie.
- 12:35Speaker 2: Oh, super violent, man. Super violent. We opened up two murders.
- 12:40Speaker 2: Horrible murders. Later on, old dog is just like, yo, man,
- 12:44Speaker 2: let me suck your dick.
- 12:45Speaker 1: What? For cheeseburgers.
- 12:48Speaker 2: For cheeseburgers.
- 12:49Speaker 1: I also forgot that's where that came from.
- 12:53Speaker 2: I got these cheeseburgers, man. And then when he killed
- 12:58Speaker 2: the crackhead. Kept the burgers. Kept the burgers.
- 13:01Speaker 1: They were just like, oh, dog.
- 13:03Speaker 2: You crazy, man. MC8 was standing there talking to that girl. Like, man,
- 13:09Speaker 2: what you doing over there? He always doing some dumb shit.
- 13:12Speaker 2: Y'all don't want no cheeseburgers, man? Go home, man. Casual.
- 13:15Speaker 1: Menace to society, Tone.
- 13:18Speaker 2: Casual.
- 13:19Speaker 1: He murdered somebody at 317.
- 13:22Speaker 2: And the cool part is, they all kill us. Yes.
- 13:27Speaker 2: AWACS was in the car. They arguing in the car, man. Man,
- 13:30Speaker 2: you scared, man. You acting like a little bitch right now.
- 13:33Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying? They murdered your goddamn cousin,
- 13:35Speaker 2: and you ain't going to do shit? You acting like
- 13:37Speaker 2: a little bitch right now, man. Both of y'all shut
- 13:40Speaker 2: the fuck up, man. Scared to peel these niggas' cap.
- 13:43Speaker 1: Back, man.
- 13:44Speaker 2: Man, give me my joint. And then you just like that.
- 13:47Speaker 2: And then when Kane has to go through with the
- 13:50Speaker 2: get back, He missing. He shooting. Yeah, he not ready.
- 13:56Speaker 2: AWACS comes in, finish the job like it's nothing. Like, hey, homie,
- 14:00Speaker 2: you need some help? Pap, pap. Man. Pap up close. Pap,
- 14:04Speaker 2: pap for the finish. He killed him a lot. Punk
- 14:06Speaker 2: ass niggas. Come on, niggas. And then they just out.
- 14:10Speaker 1: Then they dipped.
- 14:11Speaker 2: They put in dominoes the next day.
- 14:14Speaker 1: Like nothing. The title Menace to Society, O-Dog delivered on
- 14:19Speaker 1: that within the first five minutes.
- 14:21Speaker 2: And they just kept being Menace to Society.
- 14:24Speaker 3: And the good kid was a menace. He shot somebody.
- 14:29Speaker 3: He didn't kill them all, but he did shoot somebody.
- 14:31Speaker 3: He was carjacking. He was beating cats down.
- 14:35Speaker 1: For rides for the army. His grandparents were like, get
- 14:38Speaker 1: the hell out of here, man.
- 14:40Speaker 2: You got the devil in you. He pistol whipped somebody.
- 14:44Speaker 1: He got the girl pregnant and was like, that ain't.
- 14:46Speaker 2: Mine, baby. That ain't mine, man.
- 14:47Speaker 3: I had the jimmy on extra tight. How you gonna
- 14:51Speaker 3: have the jimmy on extra tight? What does that even mean?
- 14:54Speaker 3: I had the jimmy on extra tight.
- 14:56Speaker 1: And first of all, you're not even supposed to pull
- 14:57Speaker 1: that extra tight.
- 14:59Speaker 2: You were the only one I've been with, hey, man.
- 15:02Speaker 2: I don't know what to tell you. I don't know
- 15:06Speaker 2: what to tell you. Because the cousin had to ride
- 15:08Speaker 2: for her honor.
- 15:09Speaker 1: Remember how he ran?
- 15:10Speaker 2: He was running, he was like. And then he beat
- 15:14Speaker 2: the shit out of him. When the grandparents finally kicked
- 15:18Speaker 2: him out, I was like, man, fair. Yeah. Because you
- 15:22Speaker 2: are hell, man. You are a menace to society.
- 15:25Speaker 1: You and your friend, you are awful. Old Dog is
- 15:29Speaker 1: just worse. Yeah, because.
- 15:32Speaker 3: The thing about Kane is there was hope with him.
- 15:37Speaker 2: There was hope. As much as he was doing, he
- 15:41Speaker 2: still had a conscience. He was still like, I ain't
- 15:43Speaker 2: killing no kids or no old folks. Old dog was like, man,
- 15:46Speaker 2: I don't give a fuck who out there. I don't
- 15:50Speaker 2: care who out there, man. Cause he kept barking at
- 15:52Speaker 2: him without like looking directly at him. He was like,
- 15:55Speaker 2: I don't care who out there is just looking and arguing.
- 15:59Speaker 2: But he still, there was still hope.
- 16:01Speaker 3: He still had some, like, you know, when Jada Pickett
- 16:03Speaker 3: went off on him for having a gun with her son.
- 16:05Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 16:06Speaker 2: And then he's just like, you know what, man? He
- 16:08Speaker 2: was still just, like, thinking about stuff. Yeah. And he
- 16:11Speaker 2: was going to move to Atlanta.
- 16:12Speaker 3: And then when his boy was just like, hey, man,
- 16:14Speaker 3: you know, when he was telling him at the prison
- 16:17Speaker 3: what to do.
- 16:18Speaker 2: Like, he still had a soul. He was still reachable. Yeah.
- 16:21Speaker 2: He was listening to Sharice Pop.
- 16:23Speaker 1: He was listening to Rock.
- 16:24Speaker 2: He was like, the hunt is on. And you're the prey. Man,
- 16:28Speaker 2: Charles is dead.
- 16:29Speaker 1: Charles Dunbar is a father.
- 16:33Speaker 2: Man, he be acting.
- 16:35Speaker 1: He yoked up Clifton Powell in that episode of Rock.
- 16:39Speaker 1: He was so mad, he said Clifton. Yeah.
- 16:42Speaker 2: That was not that character's name. He was like, yo, Charles. Charles. Oh, no,
- 16:48Speaker 2: that's what it was.
- 16:48Speaker 1: Yeah, he was a Charles.
- 16:50Speaker 2: Yeah, because he, Charles doesn't get his flowers.
- 16:54Speaker 1: Tone, when he is locked in, he's not playing. And
- 16:58Speaker 1: he go from zero to 60, like.
- 17:00Speaker 2: For sure. He's intense. The hot is on. You're the prick.
- 17:04Speaker 1: Even the way he clapped in Rudy, it was like.
- 17:06Speaker 2: Oh, yeah, man.
- 17:07Speaker 3: He delivered in everything I've seen him in. Even in
- 17:10Speaker 3: Lowdown Dirty Shame, he delivered. But like, but those moments
- 17:15Speaker 3: was just like, Kane was savable. He was just a
- 17:20Speaker 3: product of his environment.
- 17:21Speaker 2: Odog.
- 17:21Speaker 1: Have you seen that Dr. Umar clip where he's like,
- 17:24Speaker 1: we ain't gonna be able to save all of y'all.
- 17:25Speaker 1: Some of y'all need to go to sleep. He talking
- 17:29Speaker 1: about Odog. There is no reconciliation. There's no rehabilitation. From
- 17:35Speaker 1: the jump, you like, O-Dog is just not gonna be right.
- 17:41Speaker 1: Funniest thing about O-Dog, his name was Kevin. Kevin?
- 17:47Speaker 2: You ain't know Kevin, man.
- 17:49Speaker 3: He didn't even know how to respond to like regular grandparents.
- 17:54Speaker 2: He just didn't even know how to act. Like he
- 17:57Speaker 2: wasn't rude, but he was just like, oh. Yeah. You
- 18:00Speaker 2: know what I'm saying? They known him.
- 18:02Speaker 3: But O-Dog was just, he was just a nightmare though.
- 18:07Speaker 3: And he missed when the time counted.
- 18:09Speaker 2: He did. He gonna miss the shots. He missed. He
- 18:14Speaker 2: hit nobody when Kane was getting lit up.
- 18:17Speaker 1: And them people who shot Kane, they had Game of
- 18:20Speaker 1: Thrones arrow level accuracy.
- 18:24Speaker 2: They lit his chest.
- 18:25Speaker 1: They were like.
- 18:29Speaker 1: Like there was.
- 18:31Speaker 1: We did good, y'all. There's no way he survived that.
- 18:35Speaker 2: We got him, y'all. Look at him. He's spitting up blood, y'all.
- 18:38Speaker 2: He gone. It was the second time he got shot
- 18:40Speaker 2: in that movie.
- 18:41Speaker 1: It was the second time. And he was also scared.
- 18:44Speaker 1: Remember when he got shot? He was scared.
- 18:47Speaker 2: Remember how Old Dog made fun of him?
- 18:48Speaker 1: Like, man, you was scared you was going to die.
- 18:51Speaker 1: I was like, man, what kind of world you living
- 18:54Speaker 1: when you get shot and they make fun of you
- 18:55Speaker 1: for being scared about dying?
- 18:56Speaker 2: He was scared, man. He saw it, y'all. He got shot.
- 18:59Speaker 2: He almost died. He was scared. So it's just like, man.
- 19:04Speaker 2: But that's the beauty of that.
- 19:06Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 19:07Speaker 3: It was like, we're going to show you the other
- 19:09Speaker 3: side of boys in the hood.
- 19:11Speaker 2: For sure. We're going to show you how to catch
- 19:14Speaker 2: with the jerry curl and the bull's beanie. You with
- 19:18Speaker 2: them the whole movie.
- 19:20Speaker 1: The people who wrote the window down on Ricky, if
- 19:23Speaker 1: you follow that movie, that's Minister Society.
- 19:26Speaker 2: After they just shot Ricky, Minister Society begins from their POV.
- 19:31Speaker 1: And the thing is, not being from L.A. and being
- 19:34Speaker 1: a child, Boyz n the Hood was already like, man,
- 19:37Speaker 1: is it like that?
- 19:39Speaker 2: Dang, L.A.
- 19:40Speaker 1: Minister Society was like, it gets worse.
- 19:42Speaker 2: Let me show you how they got down. Let me
- 19:46Speaker 2: show you how the good kid is even bad.
- 19:48Speaker 1: Good kid, Mad City. That's what was great. Also, I realized,
- 19:53Speaker 1: or my question is, did we start calling Jack in
- 19:57Speaker 1: the Box Jack in the Crack from this movie?
- 20:00Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 20:01Speaker 1: Because I've been saying Jack in the Crack forever. And
- 20:04Speaker 1: when I rewatched it, I said, yo, did Minister Society
- 20:07Speaker 1: introduce Jack in the Crack to the nation? Because we
- 20:12Speaker 1: had Jack in the Box in Washington, but I didn't
- 20:14Speaker 1: grow up with Jack in the Box. I didn't grow
- 20:17Speaker 1: up with it either. There was no Jack in the
- 20:18Speaker 1: Box in El Paso, no Jack in the Box in
- 20:21Speaker 1: North Carolina or Virginia. But in Washington, people already called
- 20:25Speaker 1: it Jack in the Crack. So when I watched the movie,
- 20:27Speaker 1: I was like, That and you got snaps.
- 20:30Speaker 2: On the petrol. Who got snaps on the petrol? Snaps
- 20:33Speaker 2: on the petrol come from that movie. For sure.
- 20:37Speaker 1: That entered to the lexicon of black. Snaps on the petrol.
- 20:41Speaker 1: I said that in high school, not even connecting that.
- 20:44Speaker 1: I heard that from minutes of society as a kid.
- 20:46Speaker 2: Got some snaps on the petrol. Man. And, you know, Chauncey. Yeah.
- 20:53Speaker 2: Chauncey ass. You know what I'm saying? Chauncey was just
- 20:55Speaker 2: up to no good. Clifton Powell. Clifton Powell, man. They
- 20:58Speaker 2: had a great cast in this thing. Bill Duke. You
- 21:00Speaker 2: know he done that stuff right. Man. And you know what?
- 21:03Speaker 3: That dude in the beginning sealed his own fate. The
- 21:05Speaker 3: dude that Kane Pops killed, Sam Jackson.
- 21:08Speaker 2: The dude owed him money.
- 21:10Speaker 1: Man, come on, bro.
- 21:11Speaker 2: Like, hey, man, I'll pay you when I feel like it.
- 21:13Speaker 2: Just the utmost disrespect. Then when you get the gun
- 21:16Speaker 2: pulled out, you be like, man, you better suck my dick.
- 21:19Speaker 2: That bitch. He could have still survived. He was just like, man,
- 21:25Speaker 2: I'll pay you when I feel like it.
- 21:27Speaker 3: They could have knuckled up after that. But then when
- 21:30Speaker 3: I'm just like, hey man, and then you like, yo,
- 21:32Speaker 3: suck my dick, you might as well just put the
- 21:34Speaker 3: gun in your own mouth.
- 21:36Speaker 2: And pull the trigger. Because why was you talking that crazy?
- 21:40Speaker 2: Once you tell a man that, there's no coming back.
- 21:43Speaker 1: No, no.
- 21:44Speaker 2: I got to kill you.
- 21:45Speaker 1: In this world, You have disrespected me beyond.
- 21:49Speaker 2: I have to kill you.
- 21:50Speaker 1: I have to kill you.
- 21:50Speaker 2: I don't even want to. Even people that's not in
- 21:52Speaker 2: that world, it's like, yo, man, I have to kill you.
- 21:55Speaker 2: Come on, man. Because why are you talking?
- 21:58Speaker 1: You owe me money.
- 22:00Speaker 3: Man to man. Suck my dick. There's no coming back
- 22:04Speaker 3: from that. We got to kick it up a notch.
- 22:07Speaker 3: We're not going to be cool again after this.
- 22:09Speaker 2: Oh, my God. There's no. Sam Jackson shot him with
- 22:13Speaker 2: a revolver. He was like, bye. I better stood up.
- 22:17Speaker 2: AJ said, you owe me money. He was like, nah,
- 22:19Speaker 2: but here you go. You know what I'm saying? Also,
- 22:26Speaker 2: OG Bobby Johnson. OG Bobby Johnson.
- 22:29Speaker 1: He was just, in the 90s, man, this is what
- 22:32Speaker 1: I got to play. This is my role. But when
- 22:35Speaker 1: he was in jail, he was like, man, Take care
- 22:38Speaker 1: of her.
- 22:39Speaker 2: Hold it down. Go to Atlanta. I'm not getting out
- 22:42Speaker 2: of here.
- 22:43Speaker 1: Bro, I'm cool. And we shouldn't have been doing that
- 22:47Speaker 1: to you. When you were young, that's what I do
- 22:50Speaker 1: like that the Hughes brothers did. I wouldn't say they
- 22:55Speaker 1: glorified violence. They highlighted the way the world was, but
- 22:59Speaker 1: also showed you how it it stays like that, right?
- 23:04Speaker 1: Cause you know, obviously this is like crack era, Reaganomics,
- 23:06Speaker 1: all that stuff, but he's not even saying this is
- 23:09Speaker 1: black people's fault, but he's saying like, this is the
- 23:11Speaker 1: cycle that keeps us there. If I beat you up,
- 23:15Speaker 1: stomp you out, you tell your friends, you gotta come
- 23:18Speaker 1: back and I gotta one up you. So now you
- 23:20Speaker 1: killed me, right? So now, now O-Dog gotta go back
- 23:24Speaker 1: and kill their dude. And it's just, every time you
- 23:28Speaker 1: kill somebody, you create a new enemy, you create a new,
- 23:30Speaker 1: all because Kane had the Jimmy on extra tight.
- 23:33Speaker 2: Extra tight. He ain't had that Jimmy on. He smashed
- 23:36Speaker 2: raw and he just didn't want to own up. He
- 23:38Speaker 2: didn't want to own up.
- 23:39Speaker 1: He robbed the dude for the Dayton's, didn't order the
- 23:41Speaker 1: cheeseburger in the drive-thru.
- 23:42Speaker 2: He's like, let me get a double burger, some fries.
- 23:45Speaker 2: I think I said cheese on it. We supposed to
- 23:49Speaker 2: be brothers. Are you trying to kick some knowledge back
- 23:51Speaker 2: in here? Man, that movie was crazy, man, but it
- 23:59Speaker 2: lived up to the title. It lived up to the title.
- 24:02Speaker 2: Thousand percent.
- 24:04Speaker 1: You robbing a nigga and swing by the burger plate.
- 24:07Speaker 2: Nigga, I said cheese. Honestly, if I'm already robbing you,
- 24:11Speaker 2: I'm already in your car, at the drive-thru, I'm going to.
- 24:15Speaker 1: Get some food as well.
- 24:16Speaker 2: Well, I mean.
- 24:18Speaker 1: The robbery makes me hungry.
- 24:19Speaker 2: Let me get a shake and a burger. Might as well.
- 24:26Speaker 2: Why are you here? Might as well. I'm going to eat.
- 24:29Speaker 1: Also, ain't the dude that Kane stomped out, he's in
- 24:35Speaker 1: another movie playing a similar character.
- 24:36Speaker 2: He's in Players Club.
- 24:38Speaker 1: Players Club.
- 24:39Speaker 3: He's a shady dude that assaults Diamond's cousin.
- 24:44Speaker 1: The girl who said, I'm just here to dance, that's it?
- 24:47Speaker 1: He just was shady.
- 24:48Speaker 3: Yeah, because he did something to it because he came
- 24:50Speaker 3: out of that room looking crazy.
- 24:52Speaker 1: Yeah, he did.
- 24:54Speaker 2: Yeah, he was in there. His name is Caffeine. That's
- 24:56Speaker 2: his rap name, Caffeine. Yeah, he.
- 25:00Speaker 1: I think he's been having some health issues. He did,
- 25:01Speaker 1: he did. He passed?
- 25:04Speaker 2: No, he's alive. Oh, okay.
- 25:05Speaker 1: But he's been having some health issues.
- 25:06Speaker 2: All right, let's move on. Oh, and I want to
- 25:09Speaker 2: say this, too. Say this, Tom. This is a society,
- 25:11Speaker 2: you can tell that the Hughes brothers were inspired by
- 25:15Speaker 2: Martin Scorsese. You can tell that's an influence because of
- 25:18Speaker 2: how they shot it.
- 25:20Speaker 3: Like they open up the film early on with the
- 25:22Speaker 3: going through the party, introducing you to the different characters
- 25:26Speaker 3: and stuff like that. So you can see the direct
- 25:29Speaker 3: connection between the Hughes brothers and Martin Scorsese. This is their,
- 25:34Speaker 3: you know, Goodfellas was our introduction into the mob life
- 25:38Speaker 3: that was very violent, very volatile.
- 25:40Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying?
- 25:41Speaker 2: Showing you the different characters. You can tell they drew
- 25:43Speaker 2: from that.
- 25:44Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 25:44Speaker 2: I was like, oh, I see what they did there.
- 25:46Speaker 2: They did good.
- 25:46Speaker 1: He was also in Set It Off, too. That's what
- 25:48Speaker 1: I was thinking of.
- 25:49Speaker 2: Oh, he's in Set It Off as well?
- 25:50Speaker 1: He was the brother. He was with the friend. He
- 25:54Speaker 1: had the haircut with the Acorn. Was it Acorn Projects?
- 25:58Speaker 2: Oh, okay.
- 25:59Speaker 1: I ain't seen Set It Off in a minute.
- 26:00Speaker 2: Was he a friend of Jada Pinkett's brother? Yes. Okay. Yes.
- 26:03Speaker 1: Remember, her brother was good. He was with the bad people.
- 26:06Speaker 1: He got the same haircut. I think they killed him
- 26:09Speaker 1: because they thought he was, oh, boy, with the Acorn
- 26:12Speaker 1: Projects haircut. But since Lorenz Tate was, that was his
- 26:21Speaker 1: first movie performance, we are having a small discussion here, Tone.
- 26:26Speaker 1: Top 10 movies where an actor or actress announced, I'm here.
- 26:34Speaker 1: I arrived.
- 26:35Speaker 2: Lorenz Tate announced he arrived.
- 26:38Speaker 1: That was his arrival. Been a 17 years old shot
- 26:41Speaker 1: at 18 when it released.
- 26:42Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 26:43Speaker 1: What's next?
- 26:45Speaker 2: Eddie Murphy, 48 Hours. Man. That's an arrival for your
- 26:50Speaker 2: ass right there. Yes. He came in. He came in, what,
- 26:54Speaker 2: 40 minutes into the movie? That shit took off. 1,000%.
- 26:59Speaker 2: That movie is a.
- 27:01Speaker 1: From the moment they opened that... Actually, before they even
- 27:04Speaker 1: opened it. Before you see him. You hear him singing Roxanne.
- 27:06Speaker 2: You hear him. You like... I said... From that moment...
- 27:11Speaker 2: Till now. Roxanne!
- 27:14Speaker 1: Till today. Till today. Eddie Murphy been here. He been
- 27:17Speaker 1: that dude ever since. He pushed.
- 27:20Speaker 2: Nick Nolte.
- 27:22Speaker 1: Watch out, man.
- 27:23Speaker 2: Yeah. This is my movie now. This is my movie now.
- 27:26Speaker 1: You had 48 minutes. And all they gonna remember is me. Yeah. Martin,
- 27:33Speaker 1: who's your boy from The Godfather?
- 27:34Speaker 2: From the devil's actor? The actor.
- 27:40Speaker 1: Who's The Godfather? I can't think of his name.
- 27:41Speaker 2: Marlon Brando.
- 27:42Speaker 1: Marlon Brando said that scene where Eddie Murphy said, I'm
- 27:46Speaker 1: the nigga in charge, whatever the line is. He said,
- 27:48Speaker 1: you a star. He said, I've never seen a black
- 27:51Speaker 1: man take a scene like that. He said, you out
- 27:54Speaker 1: of here from that scene alone. Nick Nolte, that's his movie.
- 27:58Speaker 1: At least he thought it was.
- 27:59Speaker 2: Boy, watch out. Once Reggie Hammond shows up.
- 28:04Speaker 1: Eddie Murphy is like, nigga, this is my movie.
- 28:07Speaker 2: It was a wrap, man. We giving you all the
- 28:09Speaker 2: money in the world.
- 28:10Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 28:10Speaker 2: All right, mine is.
- 28:13Speaker 1: Angela Bassett, What's Love Got to Do With It?
- 28:15Speaker 2: Okay.
- 28:16Speaker 1: She said, I'm here.
- 28:19Speaker 2: This was the moment. That's my first movie I remember
- 28:21Speaker 2: seeing her in. You see them boys in there? Okay.
- 28:27Speaker 1: I seen her in that, but I feel like it
- 28:28Speaker 1: didn't register. She's kind of like Viola Davidson in Antoine
- 28:33Speaker 1: Fisher for me. Because I saw Boys in the Hood
- 28:35Speaker 1: when I was a kid. So I wasn't like... And
- 28:37Speaker 1: Trey's mom is in there. Like, you know, she's in
- 28:39Speaker 1: there for your style. She registered to me in What's
- 28:43Speaker 1: Love Got.
- 28:44Speaker 2: To Do With It.
- 28:47Speaker 1: First of all, I shouldn't have been watching that as
- 28:48Speaker 1: a kid as I look back.
- 28:49Speaker 2: What's Love Got to Do With It?
- 28:50Speaker 1: Yeah, it was... Hard sell for a child. What year
- 28:53Speaker 1: was that?
- 28:53Speaker 2: 93? 93?
- 28:53Speaker 1: You're 10 years old. Somebody should have been watching me.
- 28:58Speaker 3: But I feel like this, man. This could be a
- 29:02Speaker 3: controversial parental take.
- 29:05Speaker 2: But I feel like kids should watch it all. Not
- 29:09Speaker 2: sexually explicit. Yes. But they should be watching grown shit.
- 29:14Speaker 1: I agree with this. Outside of the sex scenes.
- 29:17Speaker 2: Outside of the sex.
- 29:18Speaker 1: But I think one of my greatest joys as a child...
- 29:22Speaker 1: Watching movies, I know I.
- 29:24Speaker 2: Ain't had no business.
- 29:25Speaker 3: Yeah, man, because it teaches you a lot, and it
- 29:27Speaker 3: helps you. To me, I feel like it helps you
- 29:31Speaker 3: throughout life. Like, I saw Scarface at a young age,
- 29:35Speaker 3: and I knew, oh, I'll never do cocaine.
- 29:38Speaker 2: Really? That did not sell me on cocaine. I was like,
- 29:42Speaker 2: I don't want no positive cocaine. Nothing good can come
- 29:44Speaker 2: from this. Nothing good is coming out of cocaine. Yeah.
- 29:47Speaker 3: So when I'm seeing these movies of people getting shot up,
- 29:50Speaker 3: doing drugs, and having sex, I'm learning, like, oh, no.
- 29:54Speaker 2: Yeah. You know what I'm saying? Yeah. Even Philadelphia, like, oh, man,
- 29:59Speaker 2: you can get AIDS from sex.
- 30:00Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 30:01Speaker 2: So I'm learning valuable lessons. They'll be like, no, don't
- 30:03Speaker 2: let the kids watch that. Let these kids watch that.
- 30:05Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 30:06Speaker 2: That's what toxic chemicals can do to somebody. Let me
- 30:08Speaker 2: stay away from the toxic chemicals. You know, and so
- 30:12Speaker 2: I feel like let your kids watch this stuff. I'm
- 30:14Speaker 2: with you. I'm with you. Let your kids know that
- 30:18Speaker 2: they can't be putting hands on a woman because they're
- 30:19Speaker 2: watching what's love got to do with it. Let your
- 30:22Speaker 2: kids know the effects of physical abuse in relationships and
- 30:26Speaker 2: what that looks like.
- 30:26Speaker 1: I'm with you, Tom.
- 30:28Speaker 2: Is it me or you? So I'm going to go
- 30:34Speaker 2: I have arrived moments in film. I'll go with these
- 30:45Speaker 2: are going to be in any order. I'm going to
- 30:47Speaker 2: go with Macaulay Culkin and Uncle Buck. Uncle Buck? Yeah.
- 30:56Speaker 3: I'm generally going with, like, supporting as far as they're
- 31:00Speaker 3: just supporting players or co-stars.
- 31:02Speaker 2: Okay. Rather than them being the names. Okay. So... But
- 31:07Speaker 2: Cully Culkin and Uncle Buck, I was like, yo, who
- 31:10Speaker 2: is this little kid right here? Yeah. He was charming.
- 31:13Speaker 2: That little scene where him and John Candy had a
- 31:15Speaker 2: back and forth real quick. Yeah. What are you doing here?
- 31:17Speaker 2: What do you do for a living? It was just perfect.
- 31:19Speaker 2: I was like, yo, how is this kid nailing all
- 31:21Speaker 2: of this?
- 31:21Speaker 1: His comedic timing was like.
- 31:22Speaker 2: It was crazy.
- 31:23Speaker 1: He was, yeah, for sure. You're like, he got something.
- 31:25Speaker 2: I was just like, yo, this little kid right here,
- 31:27Speaker 2: he registered. For sure.
- 31:29Speaker 3: And then when Home Alone came out, it was like, man,
- 31:31Speaker 3: of course it casted him.
- 31:34Speaker 2: I like this angle. Yeah, yeah. That's not what I
- 31:36Speaker 2: was thinking. Because if you, if you the lead in
- 31:39Speaker 2: the film, the focus is going to be on you.
- 31:42Speaker 2: But you're going to stole the scene. I'm coming. Not
- 31:44Speaker 2: really stealing the scene, but just really, I have arrived.
- 31:46Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying? Somebody you didn't expect.
- 31:51Speaker 1: Okay.
- 31:51Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying? Because, oh, you know what
- 31:53Speaker 2: I'm saying? This, you know what I mean?
- 31:56Speaker 1: In that arena, but not didn't expect. Independence Day, Will Smith.
- 32:03Speaker 2: I have arrived. That is not technically. You think he
- 32:05Speaker 2: arrived more than that, boy? I do. I would say yes.
- 32:12Speaker 1: Because I feel like Independence Day was a bigger movie.
- 32:17Speaker 2: And Martin kind of carried that.
- 32:20Speaker 1: And Martin was more in the original Bad Boys.
- 32:22Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 32:24Speaker 1: Independence Day, there was, you know... Jeff Goldblum, there's people
- 32:31Speaker 1: in there. It's an ensemble piece. But Will Smith, when
- 32:36Speaker 1: you watch that, I was like, he's out of here.
- 32:41Speaker 1: And he was. He was young, haircut, handsome. Vivica Fox
- 32:47Speaker 1: was out of this mother effing world. For me, I said, man,
- 32:53Speaker 1: watch out.
- 32:55Speaker 3: For me, it was the double dip of Bad Boys
- 32:58Speaker 3: and Independence Day.
- 32:59Speaker 1: Yeah, he had a good.
- 33:00Speaker 2: Because in Bad Boys, because they were just a year apart.
- 33:04Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 33:05Speaker 3: So in Bad Boys, I was like, yo, man. Because
- 33:09Speaker 3: when I first went to see it, I was more
- 33:11Speaker 3: excited about Martin.
- 33:13Speaker 2: For sure.
- 33:13Speaker 1: Martin was bigger at that time.
- 33:14Speaker 3: Martin, because I was just a Martin fanatic at that time.
- 33:18Speaker 3: I was just like, there ain't nobody better than Martin
- 33:20Speaker 3: right now.
- 33:21Speaker 1: And he had done movies, more movies. He was on
- 33:23Speaker 1: House Party. He was in some stuff. He was in Boomerang.
- 33:26Speaker 2: He was in Boomerang.
- 33:28Speaker 1: Yeah, so Martin was like, I got, and Martin chose Will.
- 33:32Speaker 2: Yes.
- 33:32Speaker 1: Actually, I think his sister was like, get Will. So
- 33:36Speaker 1: that's Martin like.
- 33:37Speaker 2: But even though I love the Fresh Prince, it was like,
- 33:39Speaker 2: but I was a Martin fanatic.
- 33:41Speaker 1: For sure.
- 33:41Speaker 2: In the window. For sure. So it was like, so
- 33:43Speaker 2: when I watched Bad Boys, I was like, man, Martin.
- 33:45Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 33:46Speaker 2: And then I'm seeing the dynamic between him and Will.
- 33:48Speaker 3: And then when the chase scene, they running through Miami
- 33:52Speaker 3: and he's running the shirt open.
- 33:54Speaker 2: He just running. I was like, yo, Will Smith.
- 33:56Speaker 1: He got something.
- 33:57Speaker 2: This is. We got a new action hero?
- 33:59Speaker 1: Because that's not what he was doing in Fresh Prince.
- 34:02Speaker 2: No, he was just this cool hip kid. Yeah. He
- 34:04Speaker 2: got beat up.
- 34:05Speaker 1: Charisma.
- 34:05Speaker 2: He got beat up at the bowling alley.
- 34:07Speaker 1: He got beat up in the theme song.
- 34:09Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 34:10Speaker 1: We were introduced to him getting beat up before we
- 34:12Speaker 1: saw the episode.
- 34:13Speaker 2: Right.
- 34:14Speaker 1: They're spinning him around.
- 34:15Speaker 2: Yeah. That's what we know. They were up to no good.
- 34:19Speaker 2: So we left. He fled Philly. He got beat up,
- 34:20Speaker 2: then ran. Yeah, he got beat up in Bel Air,
- 34:29Speaker 2: beat up in Philly. So now, you know what I'm saying,
- 34:32Speaker 2: he's running, he's shooting. It was just like, yo, is
- 34:34Speaker 2: Will Smith the new act? Because Martin was still funny
- 34:37Speaker 2: in Bad Boys. For sure. But then I'm looking at
- 34:39Speaker 2: Will Smith, and then Independence Day solidified.
- 34:42Speaker 1: Man. Cigar. Yeah, the cigar.
- 34:45Speaker 2: Cool guy smoking. Punching the alien with the helmet on.
- 34:49Speaker 2: He can break his hand. Exoskeleton.
- 34:53Speaker 1: And the alien was working.
- 34:53Speaker 2: Knocked him out. One hit and quit it. For sure.
- 34:56Speaker 2: He arrived. Yeah, that was a big arrival right there.
- 34:58Speaker 2: All right, you up. Okay. I'm going to go with
- 35:05Speaker 2: big arrivals. I kind of feel like Leonardo DiCaprio arrived
- 35:22Speaker 2: and was eating Gilbert Greene.
- 35:25Speaker 1: I thought about that, man, but I feel like he
- 35:28Speaker 1: arrived arrived in Titanic.
- 35:32Speaker 2: He was the lead in that.
- 35:33Speaker 1: But that was like, I'm not disagreeing with you, but
- 35:37Speaker 1: I also- Titanic was a movie that was so big,
- 35:41Speaker 1: it was big arrival.
- 35:42Speaker 2: For sure.
- 35:44Speaker 1: But he also did his thing. He did.
- 35:46Speaker 2: He did. He did good in that.
- 35:47Speaker 1: And the end was, even Gibber Great was a much
- 35:49Speaker 1: smaller movie. Obviously, Titanic was one of the best-selling movies
- 35:53Speaker 1: of all time. It's probably still top five, I would say. Yeah,
- 35:57Speaker 1: outside of Avatar.
- 35:57Speaker 2: For sure.
- 35:58Speaker 1: Because I was going to say Leo, but I was
- 36:00Speaker 1: going to say Titanic. But you feel like he arrived
- 36:02Speaker 1: before it.
- 36:03Speaker 2: Gibber Great, though, it was just like, yo, this kid
- 36:06Speaker 2: right here.
- 36:07Speaker 1: He got something.
- 36:08Speaker 2: He's killing it. Yeah.
- 36:09Speaker 1: Yo, he was on TV.
- 36:10Speaker 2: Yeah. You know what I'm saying? And so then when
- 36:15Speaker 2: he's in Titanic, because this is after the basketball diaries
- 36:18Speaker 2: and stuff like that, I just feel like I was
- 36:22Speaker 2: already aware and familiar. I knew Leonardo DiCaprio by the
- 36:27Speaker 2: time Titanic came.
- 36:28Speaker 1: For sure.
- 36:28Speaker 2: Titanic just sealed it. It was just like, oh, yeah.
- 36:30Speaker 2: He about to go into the next stratosphere after this.
- 36:34Speaker 1: Yep.
- 36:34Speaker 2: But I feel like that was he can give a
- 36:36Speaker 2: great performance, man. That was big. That was big. Like,
- 36:40Speaker 2: who is this kid? Yeah, he.
- 36:42Speaker 1: I agree with that.
- 36:43Speaker 2: Right here. Yeah. What the fuck's going on? Yeah, man.
- 36:47Speaker 2: All right. Okay.
- 36:51Speaker 1: I'm going to go on the comedic tip. I'ma go
- 36:55Speaker 1: Chris Tucker and Friday.
- 36:56Speaker 2: Yeah, man. Absolutely.
- 36:57Speaker 1: Because I feel like I was already sold on Friday
- 37:02Speaker 1: because of Ice Cube.
- 37:03Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 37:04Speaker 1: I didn't know... I only knew of Chris Tucker from
- 37:07Speaker 1: Def Comedy Jam.
- 37:07Speaker 2: Def Jam, yeah.
- 37:08Speaker 1: But I didn't know he had that.
- 37:10Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 37:10Speaker 1: He was funny.
- 37:11Speaker 2: Right.
- 37:12Speaker 1: Like, same time, man.
- 37:13Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 37:13Speaker 1: Like, his Def Comedy Jam, he did the most with
- 37:16Speaker 1: those sets.
- 37:17Speaker 2: Right.
- 37:17Speaker 1: Probably... of anybody as far as like parlaying that into
- 37:20Speaker 1: like cash.
- 37:22Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 37:22Speaker 1: But Ice Cube had already done Boys in the Hood.
- 37:24Speaker 1: He already done Higher Learning. Yeah. But man, I remember
- 37:28Speaker 1: watching Friday and being like, yo, this dude, he's, he's,
- 37:33Speaker 1: when he didn't even do Friday, the second Friday, I
- 37:36Speaker 1: wasn't even, he was so big.
- 37:38Speaker 2: Mike Epps also.
- 37:39Speaker 1: Got to arrive in the Friday franchise in a different way. Also,
- 37:44Speaker 1: shout out to Mike Epps. Like, Huge shoes to fill.
- 37:47Speaker 2: That was a huge, like, some shoes to fill, and
- 37:51Speaker 2: he filled them. Man. He made his own shoes. He
- 37:53Speaker 2: made his own shoes.
- 37:54Speaker 1: That's why I think he did good.
- 37:55Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 37:56Speaker 1: Because Mike Epps did not try to do Smokey. Mike
- 37:58Speaker 1: Epps was like, I'm Day Day. Yeah. And Day Day
- 38:01Speaker 1: is not Smokey.
- 38:02Speaker 2: That was the key.
- 38:03Speaker 1: Mike Epps leaned on his own comedic ability. I feel
- 38:06Speaker 1: like there was no comedic drop-off from that character.
- 38:10Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 38:10Speaker 1: Movie to movie. But Chris Tucker, man, he had... Friday
- 38:16Speaker 1: was ice cube, let him be the straight. Everything he
- 38:19Speaker 1: did in.
- 38:19Speaker 2: That movie was gold.
- 38:21Speaker 3: Every word he said, every mannerism, everything he was doing
- 38:26Speaker 3: was comedically perfect.
- 38:28Speaker 2: You widened it all out.
- 38:29Speaker 1: The small little jokes.
- 38:30Speaker 2: As soon as he came.
- 38:31Speaker 1: More like Freddie Jackson.
- 38:33Speaker 2: As soon as he broke.
- 38:33Speaker 3: That curtain and came in, it was every time you
- 38:37Speaker 3: saw him, it.
- 38:38Speaker 2: Was comedically perfect. And then the follow-up. Follow-up with Money Talks.
- 38:45Speaker 2: Fifth Element. Fifth Element.
- 38:47Speaker 1: Then Rush Hour.
- 38:49Speaker 2: Tone.
- 38:49Speaker 3: All while taking small roles in like Jackie Brown. Dead Presidents,
- 38:53Speaker 3: he was fantastic.
- 38:55Speaker 1: Me and you talk about it a lot, but I
- 38:57Speaker 1: don't think the world talks about his role in Dead
- 38:59Speaker 1: Presidents enough.
- 39:00Speaker 2: That's his best acting role.
- 39:01Speaker 1: I agree. Actually, I really liked him in Air. Not
- 39:03Speaker 1: necessarily his best acting role, but like.
- 39:05Speaker 2: Dead Presidents, though, he was.
- 39:07Speaker 1: Man, but from Friday, Money Talks, Rush Hour, with the in-betweens.
- 39:18Speaker 1: I was like, Chris Tucker can do no wrong. Out
- 39:20Speaker 1: of here.
- 39:21Speaker 2: He was smashing. Out of here. Alright, what else you got?
- 39:24Speaker 3: I got Tiffany Haddish, man.
- 39:27Speaker 1: Girls Trip!
- 39:28Speaker 3: Girls Trip was a i have arrived moment but that
- 39:32Speaker 3: i feel like that's the latest now now old girl
- 39:35Speaker 3: from obsession.
- 39:36Speaker 1: Is it for sure i've arrived yeah.
- 39:38Speaker 2: But before that i feel like it'd been a minute
- 39:42Speaker 2: It's been a while since we had a definitive like, oh,
- 39:45Speaker 2: this person's here.
- 39:46Speaker 1: I'm going to tell you my next one, but I
- 39:48Speaker 1: want you to finish Tiffany Haddish.
- 39:49Speaker 3: Tiffany Haddish in Girl Strip, man, she was knocking it
- 39:52Speaker 3: out the park from the moment she got on that screen.
- 39:55Speaker 2: Yes.
- 39:56Speaker 3: It was just like, she was just like the unhinged
- 40:00Speaker 3: balance of everybody that was kind of being serious. Because,
- 40:03Speaker 3: you know, Regina Hall and Queen Latifah was kind of
- 40:05Speaker 3: like that.
- 40:06Speaker 2: They were funny, but they were also holding the serious
- 40:09Speaker 2: glue together. Especially Regina Hall. Regina Hall for sure, she
- 40:12Speaker 2: was the ultimate straight man.
- 40:13Speaker 3: And her and Queen Latifah just had that dynamic between
- 40:17Speaker 3: the characters. You think you better than me, you know
- 40:19Speaker 3: what I'm saying? I don't respect what you do, you
- 40:22Speaker 3: know what I'm saying? But Tiffany and Jada, and Jada
- 40:25Speaker 3: was just being.
- 40:26Speaker 2: That prude mom, just like, hey guys, look at my dress,
- 40:30Speaker 2: what the hell.
- 40:31Speaker 1: You got on?
- 40:32Speaker 2: Tiffany was just on point throughout. And they let her
- 40:36Speaker 2: rip and run comedically. You can't get drugged. You can't
- 40:39Speaker 2: get infected in your booty hole. Yeah. It's a booty hole.
- 40:42Speaker 2: It's a booty hole. And she was just like, and
- 40:45Speaker 2: that scene, well, we'll talk about girl.
- 40:47Speaker 1: Trip on Saturday. Yeah, girl trip is on Saturday.
- 40:50Speaker 2: But Tiffany had it.
- 40:51Speaker 1: Tiffany had it.
- 40:51Speaker 2: That was the moment. And then you saw it, and
- 40:53Speaker 2: she was everywhere after that.
- 40:55Speaker 1: She arrived.
- 40:56Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 40:56Speaker 1: Speaking of on that same thing, Daniel Kaluuya in Get Out.
- 41:02Speaker 2: Yes.
- 41:03Speaker 1: Jordan Peele benefited from like what I call the rookie
- 41:08Speaker 1: contract explosion. Like you get Patrick Mahone's rookie contract, you
- 41:12Speaker 1: gotta win a Super Bowl before you gotta pay him.
- 41:14Speaker 1: Like Russell Wilson with the Seahawks, win a Super Bowl
- 41:17Speaker 1: before you gotta pay him. Daniel Kaluuya in Get Out,
- 41:20Speaker 1: I had not heard of him prior. I was into
- 41:23Speaker 1: it because of Jordan Peele, which I knew Jordan Peele
- 41:27Speaker 1: from Key and Peele and Mad TV, but I didn't
- 41:30Speaker 1: know he was into horror. But Get Out was such
- 41:32Speaker 1: a good trailer. Once I heard that, I said, ticket
- 41:37Speaker 1: bought when I heard the I Got Five On It.
- 41:40Speaker 2: Oh, you bought it from that?
- 41:41Speaker 1: From that. Then the trailer kept going. I said, let
- 41:43Speaker 1: me buy one for this. But Daniel Kaluuya, I was like, oh,
- 41:47Speaker 1: he's going to be, he's going to have a great career.
- 41:50Speaker 1: I think he did Black Panther once. Like, shortly thereafter.
- 41:55Speaker 2: Shortly thereafter, yeah.
- 41:56Speaker 1: And then from that to Fred Hampton in Judas and
- 42:00Speaker 1: the Black Messiah. Not, you know, one, two, three, but like.
- 42:03Speaker 2: What was that other one he did?
- 42:04Speaker 1: Oh, he was the gang.
- 42:06Speaker 2: Queen and Slim. Oh, snap.
- 42:09Speaker 1: That was him.
- 42:09Speaker 2: It wasn't him, yeah. You know, he was in Sicario.
- 42:13Speaker 1: I don't remember him in Sicario.
- 42:14Speaker 2: He was Emily Blunt's partner in Sicario.
- 42:17Speaker 1: This is before or after Get Out?
- 42:18Speaker 2: This is before.
- 42:20Speaker 1: And he didn't arrive.
- 42:21Speaker 2: Yeah. Because it was like, I didn't even correlate.
- 42:26Speaker 1: He was in Sicario?
- 42:27Speaker 2: He is Emily Blunt's partner in Sicario. Oh, you're right.
- 42:33Speaker 1: Five on it was us. What was the song in
- 42:37Speaker 1: Get Out? Didn't they do a flip in the trailer
- 42:41Speaker 1: for Get Out?
- 42:44Speaker 2: Well, then shut up, Kev. How much time is that, Joshie? Oh, great.
- 42:48Speaker 1: Oh, that was three minutes left.
- 42:51Speaker 2: Okay, cool.
- 42:52Speaker 1: All right, then my bad, y'all.
- 42:53Speaker 2: Oh, the song for Get Out was Redbone. The regular.
- 42:58Speaker 2: I don't know if it was in the trailer, though.
- 43:02Speaker 1: Ah, forget it.
- 43:02Speaker 2: The point is, I was in earlier. And I didn't
- 43:06Speaker 2: know who he was. Yeah, yeah.
- 43:07Speaker 1: And he is the, actually Lil Rel, when I saw
- 43:09Speaker 1: Lil Rel was in there.
- 43:10Speaker 2: Lil Rel arrived too.
- 43:11Speaker 1: Low key.
- 43:12Speaker 2: Lil Rel arrived as well.
- 43:13Speaker 1: Lil Rel and that, Lil Rel, he stole the movie
- 43:18Speaker 1: and arrived.
- 43:18Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 43:19Speaker 1: Because Rod wasn't in there like that.
- 43:21Speaker 2: Right.
- 43:22Speaker 1: But he's in every scene. And also Lil Rel has
- 43:25Speaker 1: the benefit of, he is the reason for a great ending.
- 43:30Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 43:30Speaker 1: Because I thought it was over for them.
- 43:32Speaker 2: Me too, man. I thought, here we go.
- 43:33Speaker 1: And I'm so glad for them, too.
- 43:35Speaker 2: That's America for you, man. Man. We're going to lose
- 43:37Speaker 2: every time. Every time, man. We're going to be on
- 43:39Speaker 2: the goddamn back end, man. You know how hard it
- 43:42Speaker 2: is being black in America? We can never win. Even
- 43:44Speaker 2: when we don't win on the legit, they never believe us.
- 43:46Speaker 2: We end up dead every goddamn... Oh, this little rap, man. Oh,
- 43:52Speaker 2: hell yeah, man. That's so funny. That's how I was
- 43:55Speaker 2: going through it. I was like, another cop going to
- 43:59Speaker 2: kill us.
- 44:00Speaker 1: And he got his hands up.
- 44:03Speaker 2: We could never win, man.
- 44:04Speaker 1: In my head, I was storming out the theater mad.
- 44:07Speaker 2: Yeah, for sure. I missed the fact that it was. Oh,
- 44:10Speaker 2: of course. The cop's going to pull up and shoot
- 44:13Speaker 2: him dead. That's how it is in America. That's what
- 44:17Speaker 2: the fuck we've been going through this whole goddamn time,
- 44:19Speaker 2: movie theater. And I'm sick of it, man. That's it, man.
- 44:23Speaker 2: Come on, man. Movie theater?
- 44:26Speaker 1: His friend, man.
- 44:27Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Okay.
- 44:34Speaker 1: Lil Rel and Daniel Kaluuya.
- 44:36Speaker 2: We're doubling up in that one. I love it.
- 44:38Speaker 1: Double up. It's on you.
- 44:39Speaker 2: I'm going to go with Jim Carrey and Ace Ventura.
- 44:44Speaker 3: First of all, From a movie standpoint, of course he
- 44:49Speaker 3: was already in Living Color.
- 44:50Speaker 2: Yeah. The film arrival for him, he had been in
- 44:54Speaker 2: several movies before. Yeah, yeah. Earth Girls Are Easy, he
- 44:57Speaker 2: was in the Dirty Harry movie. Yes. Once Bitten. Ace Ventura. Yeah.
- 45:04Speaker 2: Was the moment. Yes. It was just like, yo! This
- 45:09Speaker 2: is crazy.
- 45:09Speaker 3: And then he followed it up with the mask and
- 45:12Speaker 3: Dumb and Dumber.
- 45:13Speaker 2: It was just like.
- 45:14Speaker 1: Nobody has filled that his shoes. Maybe they don't even
- 45:19Speaker 1: make that type of movie anymore. But he... Nobody's doing that.
- 45:25Speaker 1: That was a Jim Carrey... Like, Robin Williams was doing
- 45:29Speaker 1: that type of comedy.
- 45:30Speaker 2: Yeah. Jim Carrey. But he always mixed it up.
- 45:33Speaker 1: He did.
- 45:33Speaker 2: But, like, he was Zany McGee.
- 45:34Speaker 1: He was Zany McGee.
- 45:35Speaker 2: But he was mixed it up real good.
- 45:36Speaker 1: But nobody Zany.
- 45:38Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, he did. We ain't got no Zane.
- 45:40Speaker 1: Ain't no Zane. Everybody's, there's also less comedies. And there's
- 45:44Speaker 1: even less coming of age movies. We don't have them
- 45:47Speaker 1: like we used to, y'all.
- 45:49Speaker 2: All the comedies are going straight to streaming.
- 45:50Speaker 3: They don't believe in comedies on the theatrical tip.
- 45:53Speaker 1: That's what it is. They do have them out.
- 45:55Speaker 2: They're going straight to streaming. And mines are going too.
- 45:58Speaker 2: Mine ain't going to hold you. Mine ain't going to
- 45:59Speaker 2: be going straight to streaming.
- 46:00Speaker 1: Straight to Tubi.
- 46:01Speaker 2: Yeah. But that's where they at now.
- 46:03Speaker 1: That's where they at. That's where they're at.
- 46:06Speaker 2: So the zany, man. Shit.
- 46:09Speaker 1: Ain't nobody doing zany. Ain't nobody like. He was zany.
- 46:15Speaker 1: He was also physical comedy. And physical comedy is also
- 46:18Speaker 1: kind of not as popular as it was. You know
- 46:21Speaker 1: what I'm saying? In standup and on the screen. All right,
- 46:25Speaker 1: how many of that?
- 46:25Speaker 2: Is that enough? All right, man.
- 46:27Speaker 1: I'm going to just say last one more, last one.
- 46:30Speaker 1: Arnold Schwarzenegger and The Terminator.
- 46:33Speaker 2: Oh yeah.
- 46:33Speaker 1: That was like, who the hell is this? He did
- 46:36Speaker 1: such a good job and he wasn't even talking, man.
- 46:39Speaker 2: Because I fully believe he was a cyborg. Tony, he
- 46:44Speaker 2: got that robot today. You think his skin is old? No, man.
- 46:48Speaker 2: He got that robot stuff under tone. That's a skeleton
- 46:53Speaker 2: for real.
- 46:53Speaker 1: Arnold Schwarzenegger, you think he gonna die? He gonna rip
- 46:57Speaker 1: that off and he got skeleton face and red eyes today.
- 47:01Speaker 2: As a kid, I was like, man. The Terminator scared me, dog.
- 47:05Speaker 2: That's what I'm saying.
- 47:07Speaker 1: Skynet is nothing but Ultron and AI.
- 47:11Speaker 2: They gon' kill us. It scared me, man.
- 47:12Speaker 1: Today.
- 47:14Speaker 2: Like, to this day, like, when I watch it. Go ahead, Josh.
- 47:16Speaker 1: No, no, I wasn't talking about that.
- 47:19Speaker 2: Oh, okay. Watch out.
- 47:20Speaker 3: That moment where he was in the bathroom and his
- 47:22Speaker 3: eye was messed up and he was working on the eye.
- 47:24Speaker 2: You could tell it was all fake in that moment.
- 47:27Speaker 2: You see the red eye. He's like, oh, shit. He's
- 47:31Speaker 2: a genie. And then he's fixing, he's doing the repairs.
- 47:34Speaker 3: But once he gets completely skinless, he's just a full
- 47:38Speaker 3: robot with the red eyes coming for Linda Hamilton. That
- 47:44Speaker 3: shit was creepy as hell.
- 47:45Speaker 2: Yes, it was terrifying. And he was also just never
- 47:48Speaker 2: going to stop.
- 47:49Speaker 1: That's the thing about him and T-1000. They're not going
- 47:53Speaker 1: to stop.
- 47:54Speaker 2: Until they complete the mission. And also.
- 47:58Speaker 1: They don't bleed. Villains, there's no pain. They're not, he
