- 0:00Speaker 1: Hey guys, welcome back to Wisecrack Special Edition. John Orlando
- 0:04Speaker 1: and I over here at Circa. We have some great
- 0:06Speaker 1: special guests. We've had George Martorano on before, got fifty
- 0:10Speaker 1: thousand views on YouTube, and we brought him back on here.
- 0:14Speaker 1: George's back in town. Also bringing my good buddy Al
- 0:18Speaker 1: Scalliot owns Dom DeMarco's Pizzeria on Charleston, great pizza place,
- 0:24Speaker 1: old school packed. I was there on Friday night with George.
- 0:28Speaker 1: I hate to omit this. We couldn't get a seat,
- 0:31Speaker 1: George Friday night. I didn't know. I hate to say it.
- 0:36Speaker 1: I didn't know it was going to be that packed.
- 0:38Speaker 1: It's the summertime, so summertime is the time that any
- 0:41Speaker 1: locals leave town on vacation. John, we couldn't get a spot. Yeah,
- 0:46Speaker 1: we had to eat in the kitchen.
- 0:47Speaker 2: Yeah, I must have missed the indite.
- 0:50Speaker 1: I gotta be honest with you, John, like I've said,
- 0:52Speaker 1: I don't want to miss on camera in front of
- 0:54Speaker 1: our old school guys here. You usually don't want to
- 0:57Speaker 1: hang out with me because he's got John's got the
- 0:59Speaker 1: upper rational on this guy. You know, he's got like
- 1:01Speaker 1: real high end people that he usually I try to
- 1:04Speaker 1: invite them to dinner. I go to like good, nice restaurants.
- 1:07Speaker 1: He did come to Carbone last time. Oh, John's one
- 1:10Speaker 1: of the guys that I talked about. John orders food
- 1:13Speaker 1: to go, so it's my com He knows I'm paying,
- 1:17Speaker 1: and he said, well, let me get my girl. I
- 1:18Speaker 1: think you got a full meal and a dessert.
- 1:20Speaker 2: I did.
- 1:21Speaker 1: It's all right, it's no big deal. I got I paid. Wait,
- 1:23Speaker 1: it's okay, you know it's listen, John, I know what
- 1:26Speaker 1: your dad doesn't do stuff like that. That's the main thing.
- 1:29Speaker 1: So but anyway, it's not a big deal to go
- 1:31Speaker 1: and give me a slice of pie to go to
- 1:33Speaker 1: I talked about. I'm going to show. He doesn't even
- 1:35Speaker 1: know it was him. But anyway, so I want to
- 1:37Speaker 1: let let's talk to Let's see what's going on in
- 1:39Speaker 1: these guys.
- 1:39Speaker 2: First.
- 1:39Speaker 1: I want to start with al Albert. So, Albert, how
- 1:44Speaker 1: long have you been in this pizza business? How long?
- 1:47Speaker 3: Sixty years? I opened my first Peach of Me in
- 1:50Speaker 3: nineteen sixty six in Fresno, California.
- 1:53Speaker 1: Okay, wait a minute, but you're from back home. What
- 1:55Speaker 1: are you doing in Fresno?
- 1:57Speaker 3: I went to Fresnoe to get my master's degree. And
- 2:00Speaker 3: while I was there, there was a guy had a
- 2:02Speaker 3: petzie I just opened that. He was from New York.
- 2:05Speaker 3: He was right across the street from the college, so
- 2:07Speaker 3: I used to go in there every day MBS with him.
- 2:09Speaker 3: He's a real nice guy. And he said to me,
- 2:13Speaker 3: my wife hates California. She misses the season, she misses
- 2:17Speaker 3: her family. I gotta sell this place, he said, I'm
- 2:21Speaker 3: trying to get eighty five thousand. That's what I have
- 2:23Speaker 3: in it. Well, and those that in eighteen sixty six
- 2:26Speaker 3: eighty five thousand, let me forget about it and have
- 2:28Speaker 3: two cents. So I said, okay, well, good luck. A
- 2:31Speaker 3: couple months. A couple months later, I go back in there. Well,
- 2:35Speaker 3: not a couple months. I used to go in there
- 2:36Speaker 3: almost every night. But in a couple months he said
- 2:39Speaker 3: to me, boy, my wife said she's gonna divorce me
- 2:41Speaker 3: if I don't move back home. He said, I gotta
- 2:44Speaker 3: sell this place. I gotta get thirty five thousand, thirty
- 2:47Speaker 3: five eighty five the same to me and have two cents.
- 2:50Speaker 3: A couple of weeks go by, I go in and
- 2:52Speaker 3: he said, she told me she's given me two weeks,
- 2:54Speaker 3: I gotta be back. He said, if I could get
- 2:56Speaker 3: somebody to take over the lease. I said, how much
- 3:00Speaker 3: is that least? So I took over the least. That
- 3:02Speaker 3: was my first pizza. But I knew how to make
- 3:05Speaker 3: pizza because my aunt. My aunt Sue had a restaurant
- 3:07Speaker 3: in Allentown, Pennsylvania from the fifties and I used to
- 3:11Speaker 3: go there and watch this is and everything. But I
- 3:13Speaker 3: learned how to make pizza there, so when I took
- 3:16Speaker 3: over the place, I already knew how to make it.
- 3:17Speaker 1: Now, tell people where you're actually from. What town are
- 3:19Speaker 1: you from?
- 3:20Speaker 3: Hazelton, Pennsylvania?
- 3:21Speaker 1: Did they are? They known him for good pizza in Hazelton?
- 3:24Speaker 3: I know necessarily you have great Italian food. You could
- 3:28Speaker 3: go a half hour away to Old Forge and they're
- 3:31Speaker 3: known for.
- 3:31Speaker 1: Pizza Forge, the self proclaimed pizza capital. I like the
- 3:35Speaker 1: square pies. I've been to Old Forge many times. Caro
- 3:39Speaker 1: and Janelle's and some other place there. I've been there.
- 3:41Speaker 1: It's more of a Sicilian. I don't know, is that
- 3:44Speaker 1: Sicilian or no album.
- 3:45Speaker 3: It's like a Sicilia.
- 3:49Speaker 1: You have a pie right now, I don't think it's
- 3:51Speaker 1: on the menu yet. You're calling it a tomato pote. Correct,
- 3:54Speaker 1: It's a thick, thick pot.
- 3:56Speaker 3: Tell you what, I love this pie. The reason I
- 3:59Speaker 3: call the tomato pie is because we use the most
- 4:03Speaker 3: expensive yellow and red tomatoes you could get in what
- 4:07Speaker 3: a taste and on our dough. It's a thicker dough
- 4:11Speaker 3: with this tomato and our ingredients that we put in
- 4:15Speaker 3: it is. I love it. It's the best pizza I
- 4:17Speaker 3: ever had in my life.
- 4:18Speaker 1: I love it.
- 4:19Speaker 2: I love it.
- 4:19Speaker 1: It's a great pizza. It really is great. But you
- 4:22Speaker 1: were also known because of Dom de Marco's You knew Dom.
- 4:26Speaker 1: You actually went there and you studied under Dom DeMarco,
- 4:29Speaker 1: the famous Brooklyn pizza place.
- 4:31Speaker 3: In the Fara Pizza. I had never heard of the
- 4:37Speaker 3: Fara Pizza until two thousand and four. My son inlaw
- 4:42Speaker 3: and I, Jeff Lapour, we were getting ready to open
- 4:46Speaker 3: a hotel on Town Center and the two fifteen here
- 4:51Speaker 3: in Las Vegas, and we were in the White Plains,
- 4:54Speaker 3: New York talking to these guys about restaurants, about hotels.
- 4:57Speaker 3: I'm sorry, and when we got done, we started talking
- 5:00Speaker 3: about pizza like we usually do, and the guy said,
- 5:03Speaker 3: we have a pizza place here in Brooklyn called the
- 5:05Speaker 3: Farah Pizza. It's the best. We gotta take you there.
- 5:07Speaker 3: And I said to the guy, well, my favorite pizza
- 5:11Speaker 3: is Dil Lorenzeo's Tomato Pie in Trent, New Jersey, and
- 5:15Speaker 3: it's still one of my all time favorites. He said,
- 5:17Speaker 3: we got to take you to the paras. So they
- 5:19Speaker 3: take us to the Phara. I tasted the pizza. I
- 5:21Speaker 3: fell in love with it. I said to the girl
- 5:23Speaker 3: behind the counter. I said, I'm a retired pizza guy
- 5:26Speaker 3: living in Vegas. I'd love to bring this pizza to Vegas.
- 5:30Speaker 3: And real cocky. She said to me, my father gets
- 5:34Speaker 3: offers from the suits on Wall Street all day long.
- 5:36Speaker 3: We're not interested in doing business on anybody. She walked
- 5:39Speaker 3: away off me standing there. Oh this was in two
- 5:43Speaker 3: thousand and four. So every month we went back to
- 5:47Speaker 3: White Plains, we went to the phara and every month
- 5:51Speaker 3: she'd bow you again. There was a real pain in
- 5:53Speaker 3: he asked to tell you the truth. So one day
- 5:55Speaker 3: she said to me, I'm going to introduce you to
- 5:57Speaker 3: my brother. He calls the shots around here. She introduced
- 6:01Speaker 3: me to her brother, Dominic, and for a minute I
- 6:04Speaker 3: was happy. Then when I got talking to him, I
- 6:07Speaker 3: said to her, you let me from the frying pan,
- 6:09Speaker 3: you to the fire him he's worse than you. So
- 6:12Speaker 3: in two thousand and eight we opened the hotel. Now
- 6:14Speaker 3: I got cards with my name on. So we go
- 6:17Speaker 3: to White Plains. We come back, We go to Brooklyn
- 6:20Speaker 3: and as we're walking in, I said to my son
- 6:22Speaker 3: and I said, I got a different approach tonight. So
- 6:24Speaker 3: we go in there and I said to Dominic Junior,
- 6:26Speaker 3: I said, come here, and I gave him the card.
- 6:29Speaker 3: I said, we just opened his hotel in Vegas. It's
- 6:32Speaker 3: not a casino, but it's a beautiful hotel. I want
- 6:35Speaker 3: to invite you and the whole family come and stay
- 6:36Speaker 3: as long as you want. You to be my guest.
- 6:39Speaker 3: And he put the card in his pocket and he
- 6:41Speaker 3: said to me, why would I want to go to
- 6:44Speaker 3: Las Vegas. I got everything I want right here on
- 6:47Speaker 3: my street. I don't even own a car. I don't
- 6:49Speaker 3: need a car. Everything's on my street. And he turns
- 6:51Speaker 3: around and he walks away. I wanted to punch him
- 6:54Speaker 3: in the face, but anyway, I went back to my
- 6:58Speaker 3: son and I said, let's get out of here.
- 7:00Speaker 2: We're not eating tonight.
- 7:01Speaker 3: About two weeks go by, I get a phone call.
- 7:03Speaker 3: I look on my phone. It's Area seven one eight,
- 7:07Speaker 3: I said. The only guy I know in Area seven
- 7:09Speaker 3: one is dom DeMarco. So I picked up the phone
- 7:12Speaker 3: and answered to real cocky. I said hello. He said
- 7:15Speaker 3: he Hell, how you doing? I said, lose this? He said, Dominic.
- 7:18Speaker 3: I said, Dominic who? He said, from the far I said, yeah,
- 7:21Speaker 3: what do you want? He said, listen? He said.
- 7:23Speaker 4: I went home.
- 7:24Speaker 3: I gave that card to my wife. I didn't know
- 7:26Speaker 3: she watched all these shows about the Las Vegas. Now
- 7:29Speaker 3: she wants to come to Vegas. Does the offer still stand?
- 7:32Speaker 3: I said, you got to bring your father. He said, Listen,
- 7:35Speaker 3: he said, my father. He came here fifty seven from Cascert, Italy.
- 7:39Speaker 3: He said he left fourteen times. He left Brooklyn, always
- 7:41Speaker 3: to fly back to New York, to Italy, to Concerto.
- 7:45Speaker 3: He said, he's not coming so anyway, long story short,
- 7:48Speaker 3: Junior came with his wife. He stayed for a week.
- 7:51Speaker 3: At the end of the week, he said to me, look,
- 7:53Speaker 3: he said, the reason we never did anything with anybody
- 7:56Speaker 3: is because we get everything from Italy. Aur ingredients are imported.
- 8:00Speaker 3: They're very expensive.
- 8:02Speaker 2: He said.
- 8:02Speaker 3: My father's brother works in the cheese plant in Concerto
- 8:05Speaker 3: where they make the buffalo motts. He said, his cousin
- 8:08Speaker 3: works in the tomato factory. He said, we get everything.
- 8:10Speaker 3: My father said, nobody will do it. They'll ruin our reputation.
- 8:14Speaker 3: He said, I think, I know you guys will do it.
- 8:16Speaker 3: Not I think, he said, I'm going to talk to him,
- 8:18Speaker 3: he said, but he's got the last word. So he
- 8:21Speaker 3: goes back to New York. He calls me. He says,
- 8:23Speaker 3: my father says, come on a Sunday, because over there
- 8:25Speaker 3: on Monday and Tuesday they were closed, and then Wednesday
- 8:29Speaker 3: to Sunday are open noon till four. Then they close
- 8:31Speaker 3: from four to six. The old man's got to take
- 8:33Speaker 3: a siesa wow. And then they opened sixth day or
- 8:36Speaker 3: six to nine.
- 8:37Speaker 2: I'm sorry, amazing.
- 8:38Speaker 3: So anyway, we go on a Sunday, we go back Monday,
- 8:42Speaker 3: we meet with him and his father. Now we go
- 8:45Speaker 3: in here in the morning. It's nine o'clock in the morning.
- 8:47Speaker 3: They're drinking wine, wine mixed with it the coca cola,
- 8:52Speaker 3: and I so here I am nine o'clock in the morning.
- 8:54Speaker 3: I don't even drink, but I didn't want to embarrass
- 8:57Speaker 3: the guy, right, So now I'm drinking wine. That's nine
- 8:59Speaker 3: and the morning we'll buy ten. I feel my face
- 9:01Speaker 3: getting red and I'm starting to sweat. Anyway, he said to me, Paez, Oh,
- 9:07Speaker 3: I know what he meant, and where you come from
- 9:09Speaker 3: in Italy? So I remember when I was a kidneys
- 9:12Speaker 3: the letters from Italy airmail. They used to come every Friday,
- 9:15Speaker 3: and they were red and white on the envelope and
- 9:18Speaker 3: with the return address said free the Chendra province of Deerno.
- 9:23Speaker 3: So when he asked me where I was from, I said,
- 9:26Speaker 3: free the Chenda province of the Salerno. And he starts laughing.
- 9:29Speaker 3: I said, why are you laughing? And he said I
- 9:32Speaker 3: was in the Italian Army a two year over there.
- 9:35Speaker 3: He said, A who to people? Who to people? An
- 9:38Speaker 3: hour later we shook hands. We made a deal. That
- 9:40Speaker 3: was in two thousand and eight. We never signed the
- 9:43Speaker 3: paper a handshake. He lived up to his word. I
- 9:46Speaker 3: lived up to my word, and we're here now. It's
- 9:48Speaker 3: what twenty twenty six.
- 9:49Speaker 2: That's a great story.
- 9:51Speaker 3: True story, unbelievable.
- 9:53Speaker 5: The other impressive thing I heard in that story was
- 9:56Speaker 5: in four you were opening a hotel onn Center drap
- 10:02Speaker 5: It's still there.
- 10:02Speaker 3: It's called the Element. We opened it in two thousand
- 10:05Speaker 3: and eight and we sold it in twenty fourteen, but
- 10:08Speaker 3: it's still there. It's a great hotel.
- 10:09Speaker 2: Classic. But in fourth like that whole side of town
- 10:13Speaker 2: was what was there?
- 10:14Speaker 3: Oh no, it was coming along.
- 10:15Speaker 1: It was Red Rock already there.
- 10:17Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, Red Rock opened in six. I started coming
- 10:21Speaker 3: to Vegas in sixty six. I came in September. Caesar's
- 10:24Speaker 3: opened in August. I stayed at Caesar's for a month
- 10:28Speaker 3: for free. But I'm not going to get into that story.
- 10:31Speaker 3: But anyway, at that time in sixty six, there was
- 10:36Speaker 3: nothing past Decatur, and then as the years went by,
- 10:39Speaker 3: there was nothing past Rainbow Wow. And eighty eight I
- 10:42Speaker 3: bought us in Painted Desert. So when we were at
- 10:45Speaker 3: least to being a casinos all night long, when we
- 10:47Speaker 3: would leave the strip to go to the place in
- 10:50Speaker 3: Painted Desert, when we went past Rainbow, there was nothing
- 10:53Speaker 3: until you got up there, and then there was the
- 10:55Speaker 3: Santa Fe on the right. But that's how much Vegas
- 10:59Speaker 3: has your own.
- 11:00Speaker 2: It's incredible.
- 11:01Speaker 1: The original the Pharaoh is still there. It's Avenue J
- 11:04Speaker 1: in Midwood. It's in Brooklyn, real famous place for people
- 11:08Speaker 1: to Like you said, people don't leave the neighborhood. They
- 11:11Speaker 1: don't have cars. You know, back when we were kids,
- 11:13Speaker 1: you don't have cars. You use the public transportation or
- 11:15Speaker 1: you walk. That's it. And if you live in the
- 11:18Speaker 1: city or Brooklyn or one of the burroughs like that,
- 11:21Speaker 1: that has everything around you. So let me ask you,
- 11:24Speaker 1: are you using that sink because you make a pie,
- 11:28Speaker 1: your your crust is just unbelievable. You your your sauce.
- 11:32Speaker 1: Are you using the pharaoh recipes where you're actually using
- 11:36Speaker 1: the products they used?
- 11:37Speaker 3: Absolutely? We still to this day now. Nate Caputo in
- 11:42Speaker 3: Chicago is my cousin, and he's got delicious cheese. You know,
- 11:47Speaker 3: capudo cheese. Everybody knows that a lot of people use it.
- 11:50Speaker 3: I can't use it because Dominic use Pollio and I
- 11:53Speaker 3: told them I'm gonna. I don't want somebody to go
- 11:55Speaker 3: to Brooklyn at the Fars and have a pizza and
- 11:57Speaker 3: then come the next week to doms and say, oh
- 11:59Speaker 3: this is isn't the same. That has to be the same.
- 12:02Speaker 3: So we still use everything, and it costs me a
- 12:05Speaker 3: lot of money to get it now here in Brooklyn.
- 12:07Speaker 3: Everything comes to Brooklyn over here if it's coming from Italy,
- 12:11Speaker 3: it goes to Miami. From Miami, it goes to Chicago.
- 12:14Speaker 3: From Chicago, goes to Phoenix. From Phoenix. That comes to me, Wow,
- 12:18Speaker 3: and that costs money. But I do it because I
- 12:21Speaker 3: wanted to be the same as said Don Demarcos.
- 12:23Speaker 1: And I'm gonna put you on a spot. He yeah,
- 12:26Speaker 1: I don't understand the happy hour, Like why do you
- 12:29Speaker 1: I was just there with George Friday. Now you couldn't move.
- 12:31Speaker 1: What's the purpose? You get fifty percent off the tell
- 12:34Speaker 1: them what you're do in the hours, and you do
- 12:36Speaker 1: this in the days you're doing it.
- 12:37Speaker 3: I'm gonna tell you the whole story how it even
- 12:40Speaker 3: came about. It was in twenty thirteen, and we would
- 12:45Speaker 3: get real busy for lunch, and then about one point
- 12:47Speaker 3: thirty two o'clock it would die and we wouldn't get
- 12:49Speaker 3: busy till five. So about three o'clock, an older couple
- 12:54Speaker 3: comes in. Now there's nobody in the restaurant except the
- 12:56Speaker 3: help in me and the husband's looking at the menu,
- 13:01Speaker 3: and the wife grabs them by the shoulder and she
- 13:04Speaker 3: said to me, I don't want to eat here. There's
- 13:05Speaker 3: no customers. And they turned around and they walked out.
- 13:09Speaker 3: So I called the manager over and I told them
- 13:11Speaker 3: what happened. I said, I don't like this. I said,
- 13:14Speaker 3: I got to do something.
- 13:16Speaker 2: Well.
- 13:16Speaker 3: A week later, I come up with a happy hour.
- 13:18Speaker 3: I said, from two to four from now on, every
- 13:20Speaker 3: pizza and the joint is going to be half price.
- 13:23Speaker 3: And then I said, noz not only pizza, beer, wine, liquor, everything,
- 13:30Speaker 3: have price two to four every day, every Monday to Friday.
- 13:35Speaker 3: Oh have price and and.
- 13:37Speaker 1: And did port that? Dave Portnoyd came over and gave
- 13:40Speaker 1: you guys a great review.
- 13:42Speaker 3: Right, he gave us the highest score in Vegas. Now
- 13:44Speaker 3: I'm gonna that's another story, another story. He gave us
- 13:48Speaker 3: a seven point nine. Wow, it's a big score. He's wait, man,
- 13:53Speaker 3: now listen, it's the highest score you ever gave anybody
- 13:55Speaker 3: in Vegas. However, in Brooklyn he gave us a nine
- 13:58Speaker 3: point four. So when Dave left, I called Dom de Marco.
- 14:02Speaker 3: I said, hey, I said, I don't understand, I said,
- 14:04Speaker 3: he said our pizza was thicker. I said, did you
- 14:07Speaker 3: change anything since I've been there? Because I went there
- 14:10Speaker 3: like two weekends a month for a year, for no
- 14:14Speaker 3: for more than a year, for two or three years,
- 14:17Speaker 3: learning how to do everything. So I called. He says, no,
- 14:19Speaker 3: he said, we didn't change anything. I said, well, you
- 14:21Speaker 3: got to come out here because Pornoy said our pizza
- 14:23Speaker 3: was thicker. The next day he flew out.
- 14:26Speaker 4: Wow.
- 14:27Speaker 3: So now I'm in the office. He's there about two hours.
- 14:29Speaker 3: He comes walking in the office. He said, I found
- 14:31Speaker 3: out the difference. I said, what is it? He said,
- 14:34Speaker 3: he said about three years ago. He said, we start
- 14:38Speaker 3: stretching our pizza from an eighteen install in nineteen. He said,
- 14:41Speaker 3: you're still stretching to eighteen. We stretched it tonight. I said,
- 14:44Speaker 3: Jesus Christ, I mean Portnoy found out he noticed that much.
- 14:47Speaker 3: I mean, that's how sharp that guy is.
- 14:49Speaker 1: Means a lot in a lot of different areas of life,
- 14:52Speaker 1: pizza pizza being so, yeah, that's good to know. No,
- 14:56Speaker 1: that's good to know.
- 14:57Speaker 3: So let me tell you about the see uh. I
- 15:01Speaker 3: could tell you so many stories, but I'll tell you
- 15:03Speaker 3: two stories. Well, when I was working with the old man,
- 15:07Speaker 3: you know, he hardly spoke English. So he said to
- 15:09Speaker 3: me one day when we were learning how to make
- 15:11Speaker 3: the doll, he said, a blind a man, I could
- 15:13Speaker 3: make it the doll. I said, Dominic, what do you
- 15:16Speaker 3: mean a blind do man, I could make it the doll.
- 15:18Speaker 3: He said, it's all into the field. I need a
- 15:20Speaker 3: more salt, I need a more yeast. They need the
- 15:22Speaker 3: more water. I said, Dominic, how do you teach somebody
- 15:24Speaker 3: that that's.
- 15:26Speaker 1: All in the field?
- 15:26Speaker 3: Like?
- 15:28Speaker 1: But with the Italians, we all know my mother didn't
- 15:31Speaker 1: have recipe cards. They do it by pinch.
- 15:34Speaker 3: And the thing you need all right, now, you say
- 15:36Speaker 3: a pinch. We were there and he said, a pinch
- 15:39Speaker 3: of this. I said, Dominic, I can't tell people to
- 15:41Speaker 3: pinch your hand for it. I said, go get the scale.
- 15:43Speaker 3: I said, we got to measure it. He didn't have
- 15:45Speaker 3: a scale.
- 15:45Speaker 1: Wow.
- 15:46Speaker 3: So I had a guy with us. I sent him
- 15:48Speaker 3: and he bought a new scale. He come back so
- 15:49Speaker 3: we could measure everything so I could get the right recipe.
- 15:52Speaker 1: Unbelievable, unbelievable. What's your what is your address?
- 15:55Speaker 3: There on ninety seven eighty five West Charleston.
- 15:58Speaker 1: It's in the Smith shopping Center.
- 15:59Speaker 3: It's in this bit shopping center on the corner at
- 16:01Speaker 3: Charleston A while pie. It's a mile east of Red
- 16:04Speaker 3: Rock Station.
- 16:05Speaker 1: Two to four pm happy hour. And my friends that
- 16:09Speaker 1: have Miles to Memory podcast, they read they rated all
- 16:12Speaker 1: the pizzas in town, and they put you right there
- 16:14Speaker 1: at the top. So those those guys I absolutely love.
- 16:19Speaker 1: But now when you go in so I like my
- 16:21Speaker 1: pie well done, I can't get a well done pie
- 16:24Speaker 1: in this town. Do I come in and I ask
- 16:26Speaker 1: for well done, you will get a well done pot.
- 16:28Speaker 3: Absolutely. In fact, we make most of our pies well done,
- 16:32Speaker 3: well done. But when we came here and we opened up,
- 16:35Speaker 3: the people from Las Vegas and the people from California, they.
- 16:39Speaker 4: Don't like well done.
- 16:40Speaker 3: Yes, so we had as a little bit on the
- 16:43Speaker 3: time of cooking. But we'll make one of the things
- 16:45Speaker 3: that diamonds will make anything any way you want it.
- 16:48Speaker 3: And I wanted to talk about one more thing. I
- 16:50Speaker 3: want to tie up too long. Chicken parm Yeah big,
- 16:56Speaker 3: I'm a big chicken parm Gus is phenomenal. I'm a
- 17:00Speaker 3: big chicken farm guy. Now I go around all the
- 17:04Speaker 3: good restaurants like John and and my friend here Bill does,
- 17:09Speaker 3: and there's some places have a really good chicken farm,
- 17:12Speaker 3: but I think ours is better.
- 17:14Speaker 4: Now.
- 17:14Speaker 3: I was in one place and I'm not mentioning any names.
- 17:17Speaker 4: And I had a chicken partment.
- 17:19Speaker 3: It was good fifty two dollars. I got a better
- 17:23Speaker 3: chicken farm at Doms for twenty six. Yeah after see
- 17:27Speaker 3: Doms is only known for pizza because we've been with
- 17:30Speaker 3: pizzas you know from Dominic the Fire Pizza from sixty six.
- 17:33Speaker 3: But we have great pasta, we got great chicken, ourganzanias
- 17:37Speaker 3: out of this world.
- 17:38Speaker 1: You're Penny Alivak, You're Alo Vaka sauces.
- 17:40Speaker 3: I'm believable, fantastic. And now besides the regular vodka sauce,
- 17:44Speaker 3: we're making a hot sauce calibrats, a Calabrian Rigatoni sauce,
- 17:52Speaker 3: and people are it's going crazy now talk about pizzas.
- 17:55Speaker 3: We make all the standard pizzas and we don't change that.
- 17:59Speaker 3: It's all the Marcos. But you know, we've been there
- 18:02Speaker 3: for sixteen years now, so we make new things. Now
- 18:05Speaker 3: I'm going to tell you about some of the new
- 18:06Speaker 3: things we're making, which is this tomato pie, which is
- 18:10Speaker 3: a thicker pie. I love it and it's out of
- 18:13Speaker 3: this world. We make a clam pie now. Frank Peppe
- 18:17Speaker 3: in nineteen twenty nine invented the clam pie on Wooster
- 18:22Speaker 3: Street in New Haven, Connecticut. Now, when I was a
- 18:25Speaker 3: kid in the forties and the fifties. We had a
- 18:28Speaker 3: friend in New Haven. We used to go for four
- 18:30Speaker 3: weeks every summer, and the guy was a barber. We
- 18:32Speaker 3: had a barbershop right next right next to Peppees, so
- 18:36Speaker 3: we'd hang in the barbershop, then we go over Peppies
- 18:38Speaker 3: for pizza. Now I make a clam pizza. I say,
- 18:43Speaker 3: Frank Peppe invented that. I improved that. If you like
- 18:46Speaker 3: clam pizza, you got to come to them. The Marcus
- 18:48Speaker 3: out of this world.
- 18:49Speaker 1: That's a great pie. It's a white pie and there's
- 18:52Speaker 1: no red sauce.
- 18:52Speaker 3: That's white right, and clams are in this shep clams.
- 18:56Speaker 1: I love clam pizza. Silk said, I love Wooster Street.
- 19:00Speaker 1: I've been on there many times anytime. My favorite, two,
- 19:02Speaker 1: of course, are PEPs. I like Peppi's a little more to.
- 19:05Speaker 3: Sally's Sally if there's something you know.
- 19:07Speaker 1: I love Sally's.
- 19:08Speaker 3: Though Sally is Peppy's brother in law. He worked at
- 19:11Speaker 3: Peppies for years. They had a little argument the open
- 19:14Speaker 3: up down the street.
- 19:15Speaker 1: I have had a great, great pizza Sally's to go,
- 19:18Speaker 1: but Peppi's I like a little bit better. There's a
- 19:21Speaker 1: little bit better. Location is unbelievable that that famous streets
- 19:25Speaker 1: park there. And it's more than that, there's like five
- 19:28Speaker 1: pizza places on that block and a real old school section. Well, great, Albert,
- 19:33Speaker 1: I'm glad, glad you came on. And two minutes wound
- 19:36Speaker 1: up being twenty minutes. That's okay, I love it. We
- 19:38Speaker 1: could talk about the old days.
- 19:39Speaker 3: There's a reason why Georgie spends all his days at
- 19:42Speaker 3: Don DeMarco. Yeah, because he grew up with good Italian food.
- 19:46Speaker 3: His cousin is Steve Morderano has that famous restaurant, and
- 19:49Speaker 3: everybody in Georgie's family there were great cooks. So he
- 19:52Speaker 3: hangs out at Doms because he gets the food he likes.
- 19:54Speaker 3: It's the best.
- 19:55Speaker 1: And I know you give us, give me and John
- 19:56Speaker 1: ten percent off. That's wonderful. Thanks, thanks, thanks Albert. All right,
- 20:01Speaker 1: my man, George, let's let's say again again. I met
- 20:05Speaker 1: George through Albert uh through one of Albert has a
- 20:08Speaker 1: hot dog thing twice a year. We has all different
- 20:10Speaker 1: kinds of hot dogs, and that's where I met I
- 20:13Speaker 1: met George. But we put George on our podcast, and
- 20:18Speaker 1: like I said, John and I had tons of views
- 20:21Speaker 1: and even some nice shorts. So at the time we
- 20:24Speaker 1: were talking about George did how many years thirty years,
- 20:26Speaker 1: thirty two plus years and five years in the hole
- 20:32Speaker 1: solitary confinement, the hole. But anyway, you were talking the
- 20:37Speaker 1: other day he said, I said, what are you doing?
- 20:40Speaker 1: What are you been doing that? I guess, well, I'll
- 20:41Speaker 1: like to explain it. So what are you doing now, George?
- 20:44Speaker 1: A couple of years later, since we had you on
- 20:46Speaker 1: that originally, I've had some shorts with you since then. Now,
- 20:48Speaker 1: but now what's going on?
- 20:49Speaker 3: Now?
- 20:49Speaker 1: You still have the grow father? I see is it
- 20:51Speaker 1: on there?
- 20:51Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 20:51Speaker 1: You grow father father?
- 20:53Speaker 2: Okay, we surpassed. We're manufacturers. We sell to dispensaries in
- 20:59Speaker 2: the state and new We sell basically to every dispensary.
- 21:04Speaker 2: And we basically took the manufacturing industry by creating a
- 21:12Speaker 2: good product.
- 21:13Speaker 4: We are our main goal is not money.
- 21:16Speaker 2: We do good product that doesn't go to We won't
- 21:19Speaker 2: want to harm anyone. And the Grandfather so is selling
- 21:23Speaker 2: so much that we were approached by the government. The government.
- 21:29Speaker 2: Of course we have such a good reputation. I have
- 21:32Speaker 2: such a good reputation. They want me to ministry cannabis
- 21:36Speaker 2: and gummies to homeless vets and we're doing a pilot
- 21:40Speaker 2: program in the state of Delaware. The reason why, about
- 21:46Speaker 2: three hundred a day in America vets die from bad drugs,
- 21:51Speaker 2: and that's not counting the bad drugs that make them
- 21:54Speaker 2: more ill long term illness. So a guy like me
- 21:59Speaker 2: that did thirty two years in prison, now the government
- 22:01Speaker 2: wants me to help them to solve a problem. We're
- 22:04Speaker 2: doing a public program. If it does well, they want
- 22:07Speaker 2: me to assist the whole United States. Imagine that.
- 22:11Speaker 1: It's unbelievable. It's unbelievable. And so you, Albert and I
- 22:18Speaker 1: with he went to a see you at the Mob Museum.
- 22:20Speaker 1: You had a nice turnout for Are you still going
- 22:24Speaker 1: around giving seminars or speeches or shows? Are you still
- 22:28Speaker 1: doing that? You've done a couple of them.
- 22:29Speaker 2: Well, I got out of prison in twenty and fifteen,
- 22:33Speaker 2: and I was booked all over the country. Matter of fact,
- 22:36Speaker 2: Seattle was my biggest booking. It was called the Seattle
- 22:40Speaker 2: Hemfest Festival the third week of August, a quarter million people,
- 22:45Speaker 2: nine stages. I used to come out on stage and
- 22:48Speaker 2: be twenty thirty thousand. They had nine stages. So I
- 22:53Speaker 2: got off to a good start. COVID really hurt that organization. Organization.
- 22:59Speaker 2: So what what we do is, basically we do the
- 23:02Speaker 2: reason we're the biggest in Jersey.
- 23:04Speaker 4: I do an awful lot of podcasts. I do an
- 23:07Speaker 4: awful lot of shows. I do it all for grant me.
- 23:11Speaker 2: It's just pretty good product. And I don't I don't
- 23:16Speaker 2: tell a lie that does. That'll backfire. I do not
- 23:20Speaker 2: tell a lie. And now we're going into Massachusetts. We're
- 23:24Speaker 2: going into New York.
- 23:26Speaker 4: Uh, it's just going and on.
- 23:28Speaker 2: We're going into Nevada with one of my other brands.
- 23:32Speaker 1: Speak of other brands. So John has a studio in
- 23:36Speaker 1: Vocal right, Yeah, Gone Sick Post, Sticky Post, same thing.
- 23:40Speaker 4: No, it's a podcast Vocally.
- 23:42Speaker 1: Tones, Sorry, podcast podcast junk Bocal.
- 23:45Speaker 2: We're telling, we're telling.
- 23:47Speaker 1: Joey films right the Skinny with Joey Malino. He films
- 23:52Speaker 1: in Johnson the studio there. And you told me h,
- 23:55Speaker 1: because you're very close to Joey. So are you getting
- 23:58Speaker 1: into a skinny Joey's sport?
- 24:00Speaker 2: Yeah, we already, we already made the moves with the
- 24:04Speaker 2: attorneys and everybody to right we were we got he.
- 24:10Speaker 4: Joey's so popular.
- 24:14Speaker 2: That they're actually fighting for him in different townships and jerseys.
- 24:17Speaker 4: They're off, they're giving us some great offers.
- 24:19Speaker 2: We don't know what to do, and we're probably gonna
- 24:25Speaker 2: We've got it on the fast track. Twelve to eighteen months,
- 24:27Speaker 2: we'll be opening in South Jersey Skinny Joey sports Bar,
- 24:31Speaker 2: but the state of the art, very classy, very great food.
- 24:35Speaker 2: We're gonna have snuff. It's gonna have his own little snuff,
- 24:38Speaker 2: a sportsbook, and uh, we're gonna have a stage and
- 24:41Speaker 2: this and that. And uh, incidentally, me and Al been
- 24:45Speaker 2: trying to bring Skinny joe situation here in Vegas.
- 24:48Speaker 4: So that's that's still going on, right.
- 24:51Speaker 2: I mean, uh, I think in calculations and in the
- 24:57Speaker 2: social media.
- 24:59Speaker 4: He's hitting worldwide millions a day.
- 25:03Speaker 2: Oh yeah, that millions a day.
- 25:05Speaker 1: That's special on Netflix. I thought was great. I can't
- 25:08Speaker 1: think the actual name. But John, you said Philadelphia versus
- 25:12Speaker 1: Philadelphia vers of my I thought it was. I learned.
- 25:15Speaker 1: I learned things on there. I didn't know I learned.
- 25:18Speaker 1: But by the way, Joey had nothing to do with that.
- 25:20Speaker 1: He even said it. I had nothing to do with that.
- 25:22Speaker 1: But oh, you were on it. Wait a minute, you
- 25:24Speaker 1: were on it.
- 25:24Speaker 2: I was in I had a cameo. It was a
- 25:26Speaker 2: three hours. A couple of times we had a cameo.
- 25:29Speaker 4: I was a cameo in the first hour, bigger cameo
- 25:32Speaker 4: in a third hour.
- 25:33Speaker 2: Yeah, but I told him I was in prison when
- 25:35Speaker 2: that all went back, right right right, So you know,
- 25:38Speaker 2: you never want to be just repeated myself, you never
- 25:40Speaker 2: want to.
- 25:41Speaker 1: Be caught in the falls sure to the sure public.
- 25:44Speaker 2: So right now I'm shooting another doc. I might bring
- 25:49Speaker 2: Joey in on it.
- 25:50Speaker 1: Okay, cool, Oh yeah, he's just so big. He is
- 25:54Speaker 1: he is he is. Now. Uh, let you know there's
- 25:57Speaker 1: a cheese steak place in town, because we'll talk about
- 26:00Speaker 1: anyone good in bed, and there's a chief steak place
- 26:02Speaker 1: in town that came here. I thought it was very good.
- 26:05Speaker 1: The guys from South Philly. I think I told you
- 26:08Speaker 1: he's supposedly when I went that day he was in
- 26:11Speaker 1: South Philly. I thought it was very good. The meat
- 26:15Speaker 1: was great, the cheese was great. They brought Cooper Sharp
- 26:17Speaker 1: to Vegas. It's called Chaise, but I thought the location
- 26:22Speaker 1: was rough and there's no signage. But yet he's he's
- 26:26Speaker 1: pretty packed. He's getting the word of mouth. But it's
- 26:29Speaker 1: in town that called town Centers. It's on the Strip
- 26:32Speaker 1: Square town Square and you have to park and walk
- 26:35Speaker 1: by the movie did Or. It's kind of a pain
- 26:37Speaker 1: to get to. But he's getting his rolls from back home.
- 26:40Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 26:40Speaker 5: Well, if we do something here and Vega's going to
- 26:44Speaker 5: have to have the rules flout. Matter of fact, we
- 26:47Speaker 5: have a meeting right after the show with Mob Museum
- 26:51Speaker 5: at a very year Now. I'm trying to convince them
- 26:54Speaker 5: and listen to his skinny Joey cheesesteak or their property.
- 26:58Speaker 3: So we have a meeting right it right after this.
- 27:01Speaker 1: So they have one in Wildwood, right New Jersey. Oh
- 27:03Speaker 1: my god, is that on the board book? Yeah, but
- 27:05Speaker 1: that means it's only gonna be seasonal.
- 27:07Speaker 3: No, yeah, and the boardwalking wild with season Oh my,
- 27:10Speaker 3: guess what.
- 27:11Speaker 1: Okay, they're gonna close the second day October or something.
- 27:14Speaker 3: Yeah, but the second day it was a line around
- 27:17Speaker 3: the blouse.
- 27:18Speaker 1: They're packed.
- 27:18Speaker 2: I've seen the videos and the money they invested, which
- 27:21Speaker 2: is Sarah's money, they already got it back. That's how hot.
- 27:25Speaker 1: Wow, that's how hot skinny to go.
- 27:27Speaker 4: Wow.
- 27:28Speaker 2: You know, I love him. I was with his dad
- 27:30Speaker 2: for many many years, and how I was now goes
- 27:35Speaker 2: back with me and my family, man and man, so well,
- 27:39Speaker 2: we took all that negative stuff and we do nothing
- 27:42Speaker 2: but positive.
- 27:43Speaker 1: Probably the greatest thing you said. You took all that
- 27:45Speaker 1: negative stuff and and and got away from that genre.
- 27:48Speaker 1: And and you're and you're doing the Uh you know,
- 27:51Speaker 1: you took me to the saloon there, which I've never
- 27:53Speaker 1: been to. You and I I walked in you and
- 27:56Speaker 1: one of your friends, and uh, I thought that that
- 28:00Speaker 1: restaurants shocked me. Now, Albert, you you've probably been there
- 28:02Speaker 1: a million times a year. Oh, I've never been there.
- 28:05Speaker 1: I couldn't believe how good it was. It's right in
- 28:08Speaker 1: the middle of nowhere, and and it was and have
- 28:10Speaker 1: they been there for fifty years or something? Sixteen years
- 28:13Speaker 1: November unbelieved. So you've been going as as your kid
- 28:17Speaker 1: and you yeah, you're right across.
- 28:18Speaker 4: My father owned it when.
- 28:20Speaker 1: I was a little boy.
- 28:21Speaker 2: Right, and then during a saloon with the owner is
- 28:25Speaker 2: a dear dead friend of mine, like how he used
- 28:28Speaker 2: to babysit me.
- 28:29Speaker 1: Wowfar we go there?
- 28:32Speaker 3: Is it Italian?
- 28:33Speaker 1: Does Richie? Haven't? Is that considered an Italian restaurant? I
- 28:36Speaker 1: can't believe the name.
- 28:37Speaker 2: Of the saloon.
- 28:37Speaker 1: I would pass it right by on the street. I
- 28:39Speaker 1: would say, that's a saloon, that's a bar place you
- 28:42Speaker 1: know someone to get drink.
- 28:42Speaker 2: That places years ago before I went to prison. He
- 28:48Speaker 2: used to have a pony and a couple of hours
- 28:51Speaker 2: a day. He used to tie the pony up in
- 28:53Speaker 2: front of the stone.
- 28:53Speaker 1: You're kidding me. In South Philly, they got a wow.
- 28:58Speaker 1: One thing is one thing we talked about the other day.
- 29:00Speaker 1: One thing we talked about the other day was, Uh,
- 29:04Speaker 1: these tomato pies in Trenton, and it's a it's a
- 29:08Speaker 1: so it's what Albert has is different. It's a thick one.
- 29:11Speaker 1: The tomato pie was a thin tomato pie. I think
- 29:14Speaker 1: it was pretty thin. And in Trenton there was a
- 29:16Speaker 1: couple of De Lorenzo's. I don't know if they're still
- 29:18Speaker 1: even there. You have to tell me. Anzels moved out
- 29:20Speaker 1: of Fenton.
- 29:21Speaker 2: They got through places.
- 29:22Speaker 3: They moved that Robinsville, New Jersey and the r E
- 29:26Speaker 3: p A.
- 29:27Speaker 1: Okay, so they moved out in there. Uh do you
- 29:30Speaker 1: have you guys had have you had the Toreada pie?
- 29:33Speaker 2: On tomato pie? I grew up very ethnic neighborhood. We
- 29:36Speaker 2: had three Italian bakers, very prominent, prominent in the old way,
- 29:42Speaker 2: not not you know, like delivering in other parts of
- 29:46Speaker 2: the suggestion. In our neighborhood, so it was always mom
- 29:51Speaker 2: and pop operations. So the father would get up at
- 29:57Speaker 2: two in the morning and make the dough, and he
- 30:00Speaker 2: always had leftover dough. That's when your town he worked
- 30:06Speaker 2: up two in the morning. You make his dough to
- 30:08Speaker 2: go out to the customers. The mother, the mother the
- 30:13Speaker 2: leftover dough. She used to come and roll it out
- 30:19Speaker 2: to be big at his table, roll it out, and
- 30:22Speaker 2: then she would go which she had in a refrigerator,
- 30:25Speaker 2: some kind of sew me some kind of tomato sauce,
- 30:28Speaker 2: whether it's just plain with meat or fish inever. And
- 30:32Speaker 2: then us little kids, me especially me and my guy,
- 30:35Speaker 2: we used to hooky school. If you had a nickel,
- 30:39Speaker 2: dime or a quarter, and she would you give her
- 30:42Speaker 2: a nickel and she cut a piece. You give her
- 30:45Speaker 2: a dime a bigger quarter, and that's how it's called
- 30:49Speaker 2: tomato pie. We never heard pizza the word pizza pie.
- 30:52Speaker 2: Two years later. We never seen cheese on it. That's
- 30:56Speaker 2: we every day. If you hooky school like me.
- 31:01Speaker 1: Wow, I was trying to find this baker. I was
- 31:03Speaker 1: trying to a search on it.
- 31:04Speaker 2: I put, I know the baker, your token, it's on
- 31:08Speaker 2: twelfth Street.
- 31:08Speaker 1: I put bakery in South Philadelphia. Eight hundred of them
- 31:11Speaker 1: came up, everyone's I put the search into her. There
- 31:16Speaker 1: was a bakery there.
- 31:17Speaker 2: On twelfth Street tomato specialized in tomato.
- 31:20Speaker 1: So friendly to me. He gave me a tour to
- 31:21Speaker 1: building a tour in the place. It's been there for years.
- 31:24Speaker 1: It's right a crush from I think it's a primo
- 31:26Speaker 1: Hoge's or about the Hogy sub right there, right next
- 31:29Speaker 1: to it. But yeah, twelve Street and that bakery there.
- 31:33Speaker 2: Could be caustious is that he's specialized in tomato pie.
- 31:36Speaker 2: But he only makes so many, especially on Sunday morning.
- 31:40Speaker 2: He only makes so many, and you have to be
- 31:42Speaker 2: a steady customer. Now, my mother got rest her soul,
- 31:46Speaker 2: and my good buddy Stevie every Sunday he did a
- 31:52Speaker 2: tomato pie and bring it to my My mother didn't
- 31:54Speaker 2: eat pizza pie. She made tomato pie because that's what
- 31:57Speaker 2: she was raised on.
- 31:58Speaker 1: I found that it is Castias. That's the street right
- 32:01Speaker 1: therecause I've seen that.
- 32:01Speaker 4: Bakery, you know what, that right right on the corner
- 32:04Speaker 4: little street right.
- 32:05Speaker 1: Next to right next to Primos. So I was told
- 32:08Speaker 1: about this place. It's a bakery, but yet they make
- 32:11Speaker 1: all these little thin pizzas, these pizza that's it. And
- 32:14Speaker 1: basically you go in and as Italian read this, pastry, this, that,
- 32:18Speaker 1: and then they have of course they have these pizzas.
- 32:21Speaker 1: But I thought it was great. And I was like
- 32:23Speaker 1: the guys like, please please try a cheese steak on
- 32:25Speaker 1: a pizza. I was like, I don't know about it.
- 32:27Speaker 1: It was great steak on a pizza. You could see
- 32:30Speaker 1: that one in the middle of the she steak and
- 32:32Speaker 1: it was just just a great play. But I'd never
- 32:34Speaker 1: seen that before in my life. Only in philadelf only
- 32:36Speaker 1: in South Philly at bakeries are making these tomato pies.
- 32:40Speaker 1: So I thought that was really interesting.
- 32:42Speaker 2: Even in all those years in prison, we had pizza
- 32:47Speaker 2: once a week.
- 32:48Speaker 1: How'd you get that?
- 32:50Speaker 2: What the kitchen made the pizza? And I said, of course.
- 32:54Speaker 2: I used to have a lot of respect as the
- 32:56Speaker 2: years went by. I used to go into the kitchen
- 32:58Speaker 2: and tell them, tell listen, you make the pizza, but oh,
- 33:02Speaker 2: pitt a side, make me and they're big pants, you know,
- 33:06Speaker 2: make me a tomato pi. What do you mean don't
- 33:07Speaker 2: put no cheese not on, just just a tomato?
- 33:11Speaker 4: Wow?
- 33:12Speaker 2: Wow, wow, even in prison.
- 33:13Speaker 1: Yeah, you told a story about prison, and you told
- 33:16Speaker 1: the story about Tony Cilano, Fat Tony, fat Tony.
- 33:20Speaker 2: I never knew you do them. I was, you know,
- 33:24Speaker 2: I forgot. My father was my driver from my godfather,
- 33:28Speaker 2: Andelo Bruno was the boss for twenty two years, right,
- 33:32Speaker 2: and I had just sixteen. I just got my and
- 33:37Speaker 2: I finagled with h for Tompkins Chevrolet. They were friends
- 33:42Speaker 2: of my godfather and my father. I finagled the brand
- 33:46Speaker 2: new Camaro, brand new Camaro, and my father at that
- 33:55Speaker 2: time went away for contempt. He had to do a year.
- 34:00Speaker 4: I'm sixteen years old.
- 34:02Speaker 2: I used to work at the vending company. I got
- 34:04Speaker 2: a brand new Camaro. My godfather calls, would come and
- 34:07Speaker 2: see me, and I switch up. I said, you gotta
- 34:13Speaker 2: drive me? Like, what do you mean you have to
- 34:17Speaker 2: drive me? He was very whiz wise, a lot of wisdom.
- 34:20Speaker 2: He said, if I get another guy to drive me
- 34:24Speaker 2: around one of our friends and your father comes home,
- 34:28Speaker 2: I got to tell that gentleman Raymond's back.
- 34:31Speaker 4: Of course, it seems like it cours it's dead blood.
- 34:35Speaker 4: So I gotta drive it.
- 34:37Speaker 2: So he at that time, he went to New York
- 34:39Speaker 2: every two weeks and he always went to a hunting
- 34:47Speaker 2: I think Fat Tony was one hundred and twenty fifth Street,
- 34:51Speaker 2: and I used to go there, and you know, they
- 34:54Speaker 2: would sit there, and I said, I knew I knew
- 34:56Speaker 2: fat Tony from a little boy. So so he pad
- 35:00Speaker 2: and then I was with him in prison with the
- 35:02Speaker 2: commission case. And but I used to disappear. Yeah, they
- 35:07Speaker 2: were over there talking to this whole court.
- 35:09Speaker 4: I used to disappear. And that time Harlem was all black.
- 35:13Speaker 2: But for some reason, call my boy. Nobody bothered me
- 35:17Speaker 2: and a funny story. They wanted the message delivered. Tony
- 35:26Speaker 2: was the boss, but Chin was the underbosses. They wanted
- 35:29Speaker 2: a message delivered to him. And he's on the west
- 35:33Speaker 2: west side and uh and uh, I said, what the
- 35:39Speaker 2: hell his area?
- 35:40Speaker 4: What was his area?
- 35:42Speaker 2: Chin Granted's village. Yeah, so I go to west side
- 35:47Speaker 2: of Grantis village, right, and I'm sixteen years old. Should
- 35:52Speaker 2: I go in one building? And he go down to
- 35:54Speaker 2: the basement and there was a tunnel elaborate. He went
- 35:58Speaker 2: through five six buildings. I finally found him. He's in
- 36:02Speaker 2: a basement of one of these buildings. I'll never forget.
- 36:06Speaker 2: He's got his a robe on, he's got his foot
- 36:09Speaker 2: up on the desk with to put your knife, and
- 36:12Speaker 2: he's carving his toes. So I give the message. I
- 36:17Speaker 2: don't know what the message ran. I give the message,
- 36:19Speaker 2: and I said, right, I'm going to go, and you
- 36:21Speaker 2: cannot go. I said, what do you mean. He had
- 36:24Speaker 2: a rope top desk where his foot was. He was carving,
- 36:28Speaker 2: and he had the Blessing Mother Saint on top of
- 36:33Speaker 2: the desks. He said, you had to say prayer for me.
- 36:38Speaker 4: She'll listen to you.
- 36:40Speaker 2: You're innocent. These other guys that come down here, she
- 36:43Speaker 2: ain't listen. So I said to him, Mary said to him,
- 36:48Speaker 2: Mary got up kiss me.
- 36:49Speaker 4: So that you know how a point.
- 36:52Speaker 2: So I'm saying to myself, let me.
- 36:54Speaker 4: Get out of here.
- 36:56Speaker 2: Let me get out of here.
- 36:57Speaker 4: And I go through the laborate tunnel way.
- 36:59Speaker 2: And that was the That was the life.
- 37:02Speaker 1: So I never knew this. Now, I love those old
- 37:06Speaker 1: movies and stories and documentaries. So fat Tony Solano was
- 37:10Speaker 1: the boss and Vincent the chin gigante was underneath him.
- 37:13Speaker 2: Yeah, I did not know that.
- 37:15Speaker 1: Okay, then when Tony died one away. He died, then
- 37:17Speaker 1: Chin became the boss.
- 37:18Speaker 2: Well, now Tony uh hey knew when he got three
- 37:22Speaker 2: indictments back to back indictments, so he said, well, I
- 37:26Speaker 2: gotta I'm fighting for my life. I can't.
- 37:29Speaker 4: I don't have So he Chin.
- 37:32Speaker 2: Took it all.
- 37:33Speaker 1: And you know a movie that has grown on me
- 37:37Speaker 1: that at first I was expecting more, but now it's
- 37:39Speaker 1: grown on me. I love watching the old school scenes
- 37:43Speaker 1: of The Irishman. I know a lot of it's fictional.
- 37:46Speaker 1: Maybe the results, maybe it wasn't that guy that killed
- 37:49Speaker 1: I understand that that, maybe he didn't kill Hafa, but
- 37:52Speaker 1: I love I think Joe Peshi, Russell Buffalo did an
- 37:56Speaker 1: unbelievable Russell Buffalino. I love that. But Tony was in
- 37:59Speaker 1: jail at the in fat Tony. At the end, they
- 38:01Speaker 1: were playing out paying.
- 38:03Speaker 2: At that.
- 38:06Speaker 4: Sharing Frank sharing the OK to write the book.
- 38:10Speaker 2: We were all in Al knows this story. We were
- 38:12Speaker 2: rolling Springfield, Illinois. I've been in Springfield twice. The first
- 38:16Speaker 2: time was brutal. They had me in a criminal insane unit,
- 38:20Speaker 2: try to kill me, brutal. Second time, I wind up.
- 38:25Speaker 2: Sometimes when you go from point A to point B.
- 38:27Speaker 2: In prisons, you get pulled aside. I'm doing life, no paroles.
- 38:31Speaker 2: So that stopped me off at someplace and keep me
- 38:33Speaker 2: six months was no big deal. So I was there
- 38:38Speaker 2: and Springfield was a big facility, twenty twenty something hundred,
- 38:43Speaker 2: and they had a gym, and they had a four
- 38:46Speaker 2: going into the gym, and that's where all the mob
- 38:49Speaker 2: guys hung out after lunch. They would hang out from
- 38:53Speaker 2: about one to three. It's his talk. And I would
- 38:56Speaker 2: go check on them, see what they needed. The Frank
- 38:59Speaker 2: share to be there in a wheelchair. In fact, Tony
- 39:02Speaker 2: being a wheelchair, Tony Duck's being a wheelchair, Tom Mixed
- 39:05Speaker 2: being a wheelchair, Jerry and Julis Butter, Frank Jesus hold wheelchair.
- 39:13Speaker 2: I got so prior to that. Frank.
- 39:16Speaker 4: I knew Frank years on the street. He hung in
- 39:20Speaker 4: my neighborhood. Case says, I got an offer to write
- 39:24Speaker 4: a book.
- 39:25Speaker 2: I need money.
- 39:25Speaker 4: I have a daughter that I want to take care of.
- 39:28Speaker 2: They're gonna give give me X amount of dollars if
- 39:31Speaker 2: I write three chapters.
- 39:33Speaker 4: Get me the okay.
- 39:34Speaker 2: I said, all right, I'm gonna go ask, but you're
- 39:36Speaker 2: gonna get shot down.
- 39:37Speaker 4: I knew that, so I go ask them the crew
- 39:43Speaker 4: all mob voices.
- 39:44Speaker 2: I said no, no, no, no. I said, okay, okay,
- 39:48Speaker 2: I said Frank. Because I knew Frank, I said, well, sway.
- 39:51Speaker 2: A couple of weeks go by. A couple of weeks
- 39:55Speaker 2: going by, I said, listen, this guy, he's hurting from money.
- 39:58Speaker 2: He's just nieces through, he's his daughter. But then I
- 40:02Speaker 2: got a little voice because I could raise my voice
- 40:06Speaker 2: because I knew that I had a lot of history.
- 40:08Speaker 4: I said, wait a minute.
- 40:09Speaker 2: You you got a room full of money. You you
- 40:14Speaker 2: got a basement full of money. You you got a
- 40:16Speaker 2: house full of money. If you don't want the guy
- 40:18Speaker 2: to get break them off, that's how you get these guys.
- 40:22Speaker 2: Because now they ain't going in their pocket, they ain't
- 40:26Speaker 2: going to part. They said, oh well, okay, as long
- 40:28Speaker 2: as he don't hurt nobody. So I got him to
- 40:31Speaker 2: be okay. But I tell the truth, bully, I never
- 40:34Speaker 2: thought that his hands, his hand, his hands, we're big
- 40:41Speaker 2: as this really sharing, I don't think.
- 40:44Speaker 4: And he's got this little typewriter. I never thought his
- 40:50Speaker 4: finger I never thought he did.
- 40:52Speaker 2: Anyway, banged it out and that's how he got to
- 40:55Speaker 2: make the book. Uh, we paying Houses. I did that
- 40:59Speaker 2: for him.
- 41:00Speaker 1: Wow, I didn't even know that I was live on itre.
- 41:01Speaker 1: I didn't even know, didn't know about that.
- 41:03Speaker 4: I just know that the movie grew on me, though
- 41:06Speaker 4: the book sat for years.
- 41:09Speaker 2: No, when the book came out, Robert de Niro optioned
- 41:13Speaker 2: it right away, and it took.
- 41:15Speaker 4: Years before they made it into the movie.
- 41:17Speaker 2: But Robert Denaro did option the book. I don't know.
- 41:22Speaker 1: I heard your paint houses at the end of the book.
- 41:24Speaker 1: I believe we out we pay Now. Now you've seen
- 41:27Speaker 1: the movie obviously a couple of times. I've seen the
- 41:30Speaker 1: movie so many times I'll watch it in the background.
- 41:32Speaker 1: I watched the same twenty five to fifty movies over
- 41:35Speaker 1: and over again. I don't why kids hard for me
- 41:37Speaker 1: to watch something new. I always tell John, like, well,
- 41:39Speaker 1: have rounders on or something in the background, because we
- 41:41Speaker 1: know all the scenes to the movies. We can multitask,
- 41:44Speaker 1: go on our phone, do other things. We know what's
- 41:46Speaker 1: going on. But that's one of those movies that is
- 41:48Speaker 1: at first it was just okay. It grew on me.
- 41:50Speaker 1: The movie grew on me. I love the old scenes.
- 41:53Speaker 1: I think the scenes when they had when when Frank
- 41:57Speaker 1: Sheeron was was at this big thing for him. They
- 42:02Speaker 1: gave him, you know, they put him in the and
- 42:04Speaker 1: they gave him a nice ring, and they give this
- 42:06Speaker 1: big ceremony for him. In the movie, those scenes when
- 42:10Speaker 1: the Joe Pesci character Russell Buffaloo talking to Frank Sharon
- 42:17Speaker 1: talking to Oppacno who played Jimmy Hoffa. I love those scenes.
- 42:22Speaker 1: You know, some people, not me, some people not me,
- 42:25Speaker 1: think that you're not a showing appreciation. I love those scenes,
- 42:29Speaker 1: those words. He did a great job. But how fictional
- 42:33Speaker 1: was it compared to the truth? All the old school
- 42:36Speaker 1: guys says he didn't he didn't.
- 42:39Speaker 2: Know the truth? Who knows the truth? You know? I
- 42:41Speaker 2: know Russell very well. I was an eleven words with him.
- 42:45Speaker 2: He lived right next door with my Cody Fennett. I
- 42:48Speaker 2: know him for years now. But who who really knows
- 42:50Speaker 2: your truth?
- 42:51Speaker 4: Who knows?
- 42:51Speaker 2: Because back then weren't may now I'm paying attention to
- 42:57Speaker 2: that life anymore. But even if you know the truth,
- 43:00Speaker 2: if it it evaporates, right and evaporates, as simple as that,
- 43:04Speaker 2: I don't now.
- 43:06Speaker 1: If you had to name a favorite movie, what would
- 43:08Speaker 1: it be?
- 43:08Speaker 3: Though?
- 43:09Speaker 1: And mob tender of anything? Your favorite movie. Mine's like
- 43:12Speaker 1: Casablanca and of course The Godfather, which we like comedies
- 43:18Speaker 1: like comedy.
- 43:18Speaker 2: We like comedy. Yeah, we love comedies. Okay, you gotta
- 43:22Speaker 2: watch the movie The Cobbler with Adam Sandler.
- 43:25Speaker 1: Good, Oh my god, Adam Sandler friends with John Orlando
- 43:28Speaker 1: and Tony Orlando.
- 43:29Speaker 2: You gotta watch the Tony was in one of us movies.
- 43:32Speaker 1: Yeah, that's my boy, that's my boy. Yeah, and Weser
- 43:36Speaker 1: and then so.
- 43:37Speaker 2: Is that a new one?
- 43:37Speaker 1: Is that a new movie or why it was a
- 43:39Speaker 1: few years. I can't watch comedy now, I can't, like
- 43:41Speaker 1: I can watch Caddy Shack maybe or so it's harp
- 43:44Speaker 1: me to watch comedy though.
- 43:45Speaker 2: It's really one of the doc guys we speak right now,
- 43:47Speaker 2: my new documentary I don't have a title for. We'd
- 43:50Speaker 2: shooting in n Philly with NPR NPR Studios, which is natural.
- 43:55Speaker 2: We're shooting with that.
- 43:56Speaker 1: Anything else to promote anything you want to promote anything
- 43:58Speaker 1: going on? If you check away, send my song. Yes
- 44:01Speaker 1: he did, he did well.
- 44:02Speaker 4: I saved my voice for my latter years in life.
- 44:05Speaker 2: Right because I'm giving you a message.
- 44:07Speaker 1: Weren't you want to?
- 44:08Speaker 2: You had this?
- 44:08Speaker 1: This was on a couple of radio stations.
- 44:10Speaker 2: Al Right, Yeah, you're signing a messages that your life's
- 44:13Speaker 2: never over. There's always something new around the corner. So
- 44:16Speaker 2: I'm singing now. I'm working on my second song, Nice.
- 44:21Speaker 1: Nice.
- 44:21Speaker 2: The first song is Freedom and it's it feels like
- 44:25Speaker 2: I'm singing to a woman, but I'm singing to emotion.
- 44:29Speaker 2: Oh okay, and I'm trying to I'm trying to get
- 44:31Speaker 2: a copy by by people like Jelly Row, John Legs
- 44:35Speaker 2: and something like that. What are you doing?
- 44:36Speaker 4: I hear it.
- 44:37Speaker 1: But by the way, what are you doing in Vegas?
- 44:38Speaker 1: Just stop by?
- 44:39Speaker 2: No, no, we we we may now do awful lot
- 44:43Speaker 2: of legitimate things. Meetings every we come out. We have
- 44:46Speaker 2: meetings all day long.
- 44:49Speaker 1: No I did no, no, no, no, no. I don't
- 44:50Speaker 1: mean hear to circle with me. I mean you flew
- 44:53Speaker 1: out to Vegas for any specific reason? Are you looking
- 44:56Speaker 1: to get into maybe a Joey's Cheese Steaks here?
- 44:58Speaker 2: I know you. Yeah, we're working on that.
- 45:00Speaker 3: I have.
- 45:01Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm fortunate enough to develop friendships. Uh, and I
- 45:06Speaker 2: have when I'm in town. I've been town to the
- 45:08Speaker 2: twentieth I have people coming in from La I have
- 45:11Speaker 2: people coming from Scottsdale, the et cetera, et cetera. I
- 45:16Speaker 2: got people coming in actually from the East coast, you know,
- 45:19Speaker 2: just they like to hang out and I always bring
- 45:22Speaker 2: them to domes.
- 45:23Speaker 1: You know. We went to dinner the other night, and
- 45:26Speaker 1: I'm going to drive him back. He says, no, I
- 45:28Speaker 1: don't want to get rid. It's one hundred and fourteen
- 45:30Speaker 1: degrees or six thirty, he says, I'm He gets out
- 45:34Speaker 1: of the restaurant and he said, I'm walking. So wait
- 45:36Speaker 1: a minute, hold on, what do you mean you're walking?
- 45:38Speaker 1: One hundred There was a literally I took a video
- 45:40Speaker 1: of it. One hundred thirteen hundred and thirteen degrees. Dropped
- 45:42Speaker 1: me off, Yeah, dropped you off.
- 45:44Speaker 2: Well, I have a night spot there where we live.
- 45:47Speaker 1: Yeah, but but no, we went we went to a
- 45:48Speaker 1: different restaurant, you and I the other day, Remember we went,

- 45:53Speaker 1: come on, get in the car. I goes, no, I'm walking.
- 45:54Speaker 1: Wait what do you mean you're walking?
- 45:56Speaker 2: That's about a mile from where I live.
- 45:57Speaker 1: Two hundred and thirteen He wants to walk at one
- 46:00Speaker 1: hundred and thirteen degree And what did I say? I'm
- 46:01Speaker 1: responsible for you, I can't. I walk.
- 46:04Speaker 2: I like walking a night.
- 46:05Speaker 1: I like walking, and I just amazing. And then you
- 46:08Speaker 1: still do ice the ice pool or no, you do
- 46:10Speaker 1: that when you're back home like cold cold.
- 46:13Speaker 4: I'm in the pool with Alice, right, which I love.
- 46:16Speaker 1: I'm in the cool every day seven o'clock. No, three
- 46:19Speaker 1: times a day, three times a day. Three What are
- 46:21Speaker 1: you doing there? Full work full workout? Wow, every two
- 46:27Speaker 1: hours a day every day. Now. I remember during the
- 46:29Speaker 1: winter you were getting in cold the cold pool was freezing.
- 46:33Speaker 4: You got a pool.
- 46:34Speaker 2: You got a pool. Usually weather it's cold or hot cold.
- 46:37Speaker 1: He's in there the coldest days he's in there. Wow. Wow,
- 46:40Speaker 1: Well you two guys. Was great to have you one.
- 46:42Speaker 1: I've never had Albert on a full show like this
- 46:45Speaker 1: and check out. Of course. Tom DeMarco's over there, and
- 46:48Speaker 1: George will be checking in. We'll do some shorts with
- 46:51Speaker 1: him down the line here, and it was just great
- 46:53Speaker 1: to get him back on and see what's going on
- 46:54Speaker 1: in this world. I love some of the stories. Last story,
- 46:57Speaker 1: everyone asked me people are in fatuated with John Gotty.
- 47:01Speaker 1: They aren'tfatuated. It is unbelievable that everyone around the world,
- 47:06Speaker 1: on every continent, I read knows who John Gotty is
- 47:09Speaker 1: as big as any of the biggest movie star in
- 47:11Speaker 1: the world. John Gotty is is just just an amazing
- 47:14Speaker 1: uh subject matter. George was in with him for how
- 47:18Speaker 1: long in the same cell over two years? Two years,
- 47:21Speaker 1: same cell. And you said that you guys had a
- 47:25Speaker 1: little special treatment in there.
- 47:28Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 47:28Speaker 1: Did you guys get some special food or special days? Yeah?
- 47:33Speaker 4: I got locked up for a sandwich. Made the papers,
- 47:36Speaker 4: that's right.
- 47:37Speaker 2: And then the papers he said, I was the connection
- 47:39Speaker 2: for the Commission trial, which is the biggest mile trial ever.
