Transcript
- 0:15Hello and welcome back to the Easy Double Podcast episode 45.
- 0:20We're in the post Christmas lull between Christmas and New Year,
- 0:23but we are here as we are every week to bring you some form of
- 0:27running content. So welcome to the show, fresh
- 0:30off the back of a 5K race on the 27th of December.
- 0:34Owen Smith, how are you doing? I'm really good.
- 0:37Ryan just finished my long run there today, so it's feed up and
- 0:40chill. But no, it's good.
- 0:42It's it's very cold. It's gone cold here again.
- 0:46So yeah, I'm just trying to stay warm.
- 0:49No, no white Christmas over there.
- 0:52No, it was meant to be. It was meant to be really,
- 0:54really cold this week, like freezing, but it actually, it
- 0:56never came. So yeah, look, to be honest,
- 1:00it's probably better for running when it's not quite.
- 1:03So yeah, it's good. Hey, good.
- 1:07Well, I'm glad you're keeping safe and we'll we'll get to your
- 1:09race later on. Welcome also to Dean.
- 1:12Quite the contrast for us over here in Perth with a 40°
- 1:16Christmas Day, was it? Geez, how you doing?
- 1:19Good, mate. Yeah, I was going to say I was
- 1:21feeling cool today by our standards, but it's probably a
- 1:24different feeling of cool. Yes, explain to me how without
- 1:29just stating the obvious, Christmas Day can go from 40° to
- 1:33Boxing Day like 25. Well, it's a bit unusual for
- 1:37Perth. Like I know in Melbourne they
- 1:39talk about Four Seasons in one day, but Perth's a bit more
- 1:43consistent, so normally we have a more consistent weather.
- 1:48So yeah, I don't know what brought about the real spike in
- 1:51temperature. Is it something to do with high
- 1:52and low pressure systems, which I'm unfamiliar with?
- 1:55All I know is I think sometimes when there's like, is it high
- 1:59pressure system, low pressure systems, one might follow the
- 2:02other and that's what creates some of the wind and weather
- 2:04that comes with it. But yeah, it's very hot.
- 2:08Yeah, well I want to ask you both about your actual Christmas
- 2:11days and I guess this could be fun and a good insight for
- 2:14listeners because the UK and Irish listeners can get an
- 2:18insight into an Aussie Christmas and the vice versa.
- 2:21So Dean, what, what were you up to on Christmas Day?
- 2:24How's your day look? It's more just like a lunch with
- 2:29with family or extended extended family Christmas lunch.
- 2:34Ours was a little bit delayed. We had gastro in the house.
- 2:37So the this made a little bit more challenging than normal.
- 2:41But I think I was chatting with Josh on the long run today and
- 2:45he mentioned I think the herdsmen might have had like 4
- 2:49tons of prawns per like ordered to go through them.
- 2:53So I think a lot of very popular to have like Christmas Turkey or
- 2:57ham, but as well as like seafood shrimp on the Barbie is quite a,
- 3:00you know, popular option around a BBQ summer Christmas.
- 3:06Yeah. So when you.
- 3:07When you have the prawns would just, would you just eat them as
- 3:10they are? Because I think that you still
- 3:12eat them in the UK but it'd be served as like a prawn salad
- 3:15with a shit loads of Mayo on them, but not here maybe.
- 3:19No, yeah, you would normally just put them on the on the BBQ,
- 3:22grill them and then eat them. But I mean, people have them all
- 3:26different ways, but. Fresh from Exmouth.
- 3:29Yeah, that's right. But like I think knowing the
- 3:32weather was going to be 40 odd degrees, we ended up getting a
- 3:35very large inflatable pool and slide and those sorts of things
- 3:39for at my parents house so that the kids would survive not
- 3:42tearing my parents house down and enjoy the the hot weather or
- 3:46periods of it. Yeah, nice.
- 3:49It's no no beach trip in the morning, though.
- 3:51You were too stuck looking after the kids, making sure there's no
- 3:55emergencies. Yeah, that's right.
- 3:57But but I I know, I know. It's quite popular.
- 4:00Did you get down to the beach? Yeah, we went for the first time
- 4:04down to Coogee or Coogee Beach, you know, S South of the river
- 4:09that they've got that shipwreck there, haven't they?
- 4:11I don't know if you visited it Owen, whilst you were here.
- 4:13It's a bit of a like tourist attraction.
- 4:14First time I've been. No, I never was.
- 4:17Is it? Is that like before Fremantle or
- 4:20where? A little below I think.
- 4:22Yeah. I wouldn't went down that far
- 4:24enough. It's it's cool, though it's only
- 4:27about maybe 20 meters offshore and you can walk out to chest
- 4:31tight almost to it. You only have to swim 5 or 10
- 4:34meters. The the perilous thing is it's
- 4:37located just next to a shark net.
- 4:40So you've got you've got the, the safety prospect of a nice
- 4:45enclosed place to swim and then it the fact that the shark Nets
- 4:48there or almost reminds you how exposed the shipwreck is if
- 4:52there is any sharks out there. So the quicker nose.
- 4:56Did I see? Was it, is it the thing that
- 5:00killed Steve Irwin? Did that thing get into the
- 5:04square? Caught a slow, you know that
- 5:08square Stingray or was it a state?
- 5:12Yeah. Did that get in?
- 5:14Stingriser everywhere. Yeah, but there's a sharknet
- 5:17there, so how the hell did he get in?
- 5:19All right, there's a bloody there's a sea lion chasing it.
- 5:22Or the other way round, one way or the other.
- 5:24But someone had it on video. I seen that.
- 5:27Was that just just a few days ago?
- 5:29Yeah. Guys like that area is meant to
- 5:32be safe and you've got freaking sea lions and Stingrays.
- 5:37No, they had to shut that swimming area at some point in
- 5:40the past six months because the bronze whalers shark got in and
- 5:43they couldn't get out for two days.
- 5:47Are they like, can they kill you?
- 5:50I think so. I think they're they're not.
- 5:52Unlikely. A tiger or a bloody bull, But
- 5:57the Aussies would have been out there getting selfies with it
- 5:59and also it's off their heads, aren't they?
- 6:03I think it's more dangerous being next to you on a bike to
- 6:06be fair. So cheap.
- 6:11I've made quick progress in the past few months.
- 6:14Change my it's to any of the cyclists listening.
- 6:21Please don't go back and listen to prior episodes.
- 6:23I'm sorry and I don't know, how did the Irish Christmas Day look
- 6:29like? It was good.
- 6:31So had a nice little lion. Then I went down to my family
- 6:38actually doing presents here at my girlfriend first, then went
- 6:41down to my family, opened presents down there with them.
- 6:45Then I went for a little jog. I had like 30 minute jog.
- 6:50Had some dinner lads. When I tell you it was the best
- 6:53dinner I've had in two years. Oh my God, you just can't beat
- 6:57your mother's Coke. And it was so good.
- 7:00And traditional Christmas dinner.
- 7:03Yeah. It was like, well, you just have
- 7:06your Turkey, your honey glazed ham, You've got your Brussels
- 7:10sprouts, you've got your carrots, your roast potato,
- 7:14Mashed potato, croquettes. Yeah.
- 7:17It's just it's it's unreal. So.
- 7:23Blankets. No, that's a real English thing.
- 7:25We don't really do that over there.
- 7:27Yeah, and we leave that for you guys.
- 7:31I only learned what that was there a couple of weeks a couple
- 7:33of years ago. Isn't it like a sausage?
- 7:36Is it a sausage wrapped in bacon?
- 7:37Is it or something wrapped in bacon?
- 7:40Just for all those fat bastards, yeah.
- 7:45And then, yeah, that went down to football pitch, kicked ball
- 7:48with my kicked football with my brother and sister.
- 7:50And yeah, played some board games and yeah, it was very
- 7:53chill, very nice. No no, I have a gym session.
- 7:58Just sounds a bit disappointed. Now you'll hear when I get to my
- 8:02week that it was sort of like I was just sort of damaging
- 8:06limitations, like trying to not cook myself this week.
- 8:08So it could have went bad, but I think I've saved myself.
- 8:13So yeah, we'll get to that later.
- 8:17One thing I had after my dinner for dessert was I don't know if
- 8:21you've seen it in in Woolworths. They've got this like Biscoff
- 8:26trifle almost. It's like crack cocaine.
- 8:29Oh my God, they couldn't get me spoon out of it.
- 8:35Yeah, that stuff's so good. And it comes in like such a
- 8:38book, it's like a family size bowl.
- 8:40So if you're buying it between just like a couple of you, it's
- 8:43absolutely dangerous because it'll just sit there in the
- 8:45fridge until it's gone. Oh yeah, right.
- 8:49Then how the episode looks this week, slightly different.
- 8:52It's a Christmas special and the VR special.
- 8:56Obviously we put the easy double listener honours awards out for
- 9:00vote last week. Thanks to everyone who's voted.
- 9:03There's some very interesting results and lots of variation
- 9:07across the nominations and the the results there.
- 9:10So we're going to go through them.
- 9:11We're then going to do some personal and podcast wins and
- 9:15losses for the year. That's just been and also think
- 9:18about some goals for 2026. So I'm sure you can imagine that
- 9:23might be fun given what's been going on right then.
- 9:27So we'll kick off the awards. The first one was for the Male
- 9:32International of the Year 2025. So for this one I put out, I
- 9:38think there's ten different nominees, including, I'll just
- 9:41whiz through them. We had Simbu, Jimmy Gracia, Cole
- 9:43Hawker, Isaac Nader, 1, Yon Yi, Connor Manse, Sebastian Sawy,
- 9:48Jacob Coplemo and two more which are cut off the page.
- 9:52There's also an option for the listeners to select all that and
- 9:57tell me if I'd missed anyone else.
- 10:00So there was actually 30 in different votes, so a couple of
- 10:02people put their own nominations in.
- 10:04So honourable mentions for Alex Yee and Georgie Beamish there.
- 10:09However, the podium went like this.
- 10:11So tied third with 16.7% was Wang Yong Yi who won the 800
- 10:20meters at World Champs and won about 1,000,000 Diamond Leagues
- 10:23in the lead up to that and Connor Man who took down the
- 10:26North American Marathon record. Then the winner overall was Mr.
- 10:32James or Jimmy Gressier from France with his double podium
- 10:36and the World Champs in the 10,000 the 5000.
- 10:41Would either of you disagree with Jimmy Gressier winning
- 10:44that? No, he's had a, well, actually I
- 10:48was looking at this before we start recording.
- 10:50I was like, how do you give the Jimmy Greasier?
- 10:52But he's actually had a phenomenal year and like he's
- 10:55putting up to the canyons in them long distance events.
- 10:58He came second in your across and arguably on different course
- 11:01he probably would have won it. So yeah, he's had a, he's had a
- 11:05really, really good year. Happy with that, Dean.
- 11:09Yeah, my only the only two that I think may be rival in terms of
- 11:16performance. And so Jimmy Gracie is
- 11:21championship performances I think are the best.
- 11:23But Sebastian so by Jake Lemo's marathon and half marathon
- 11:29performances up there in terms of wasn't, wasn't Jacob Kip
- 11:35Lemo's half marathon in terms of ranking points like something
- 11:39quite exceptional? Is this is true?
- 11:43Is that? Yeah.
- 11:44And he absolutely smashed it, Yeah.
- 11:46But it still hasn't been ratified yet, and it's nearly
- 11:48been a year, so take about what you will.
- 11:53Yeah, so if we so that's it's hard to get behind that.
- 11:56I find it harder to get behind it.
- 11:59Most like Jimmy Gracia's performances I find much easier
- 12:03to get behind. So but if you weren't if you
- 12:06didn't have that asterisks over the performance of performance
- 12:10itself is is remarkable. So I don't know they they are
- 12:15just commenting on them as quite exceptional performances and
- 12:18Sebastian's always run at Berlin when it was quite hot was pretty
- 12:21exceptional as well. That is a good point, to be
- 12:25fair, because you almost look at that run of Kapliemo and go,
- 12:28yeah, but like just almost overlook it as if it's it's not
- 12:32legit. But as it stands right now, it
- 12:33is legit. Yeah, like the other, I thought
- 12:38it was like 5730 that could you help?
- 12:40Sure. And whoever else who, there's a
- 12:42couple of people that ran 57 mid and he's run, you know, 50
- 12:47seconds quicker, like, yeah. I can't remember.
- 12:53I know we started the podcast in February.
- 12:55I can't remember whether we started after or before his run
- 12:59there, but it must have been after because I don't recall
- 13:02speaking about it in dramatic fashion.
- 13:06No. But yeah, I mean, I should
- 13:09emphasize here, no matter what our opinions are, the listener
- 13:13vote wins the award every time. So we're just offering our
- 13:17opinions for a bit of color. So well done, Jimmy Gressier.
- 13:21We will invite you onto the podcast to receive your award if
- 13:24you'd like to do so. I wish you could speak English,
- 13:29it'd be so good. He doesn't have a word.
- 13:33If he was willing to come on, I'll try and speak French soon,
- 13:41that would. Go as well as like you riding a
- 13:43bike. If he can't speak English then
- 13:48he won't actually know that I've ever said that.
- 13:50So the chances of them coming on to challenge me to speak French
- 13:53and minimal so I'm safe. And then the Owen, you're on the
- 14:00second award. So this is female athlete of the
- 14:05year. In the international field.
- 14:08Yeah. So number one, a Beatrice Chabat
- 14:17won this. We'll have to take this out.
- 14:20Things outside I should have. Run.
- 14:28I shouldn't have gave you some forewarner.
- 14:33Lol T2. So in the female, international
- 14:41and women's award we've got Umm Perez Chipchurcher from the
- 14:46marathon, you've got Beatrice Jabba who was the 10,000 and
- 14:505000 meter winner in the World Championships, Fakey Biegon, UMM
- 14:55Lillian Odeira, UH Tisiga, Asafa, Nadia Badacledi and then
- 15:02Kate O'Connor from Ireland. So the results in tight second
- 15:07was Fate Kipiagon and Nadia Badikladi where 25% of the votes
- 15:12and then number one who is the winner, Let's be real, she
- 15:17should have won the proper world award as well.
- 15:20And Beatrice Chabat with 37% of the votes, like winning the 5010
- 15:25thousand double breaking 14 minutes for the 5K.
- 15:28It's like phenomenal running. So yeah.
- 15:33Have you any, do you guys agree with that?
- 15:38Yeah, I think so. My only challenge would be Faith
- 15:42QPA gone, didn't she? She breaks our records, won the
- 15:461500 meters and is it finished second to Tibet in the 5000.
- 15:51So I think the fact that the head to head in the 5000 Tibet
- 15:57wins means that she gets the nod.
- 16:00Maybe some world records count or something as well.
- 16:03Yeah, I'm also in agreement. I reckon that 5K, as you say, is
- 16:07the settler there. If Kippie Aegon had to come out
- 16:10on top, then maybe she takes this award.
- 16:13But I think Chibet broke the 5000 metre world record as well.
- 16:18So it's like one world record each and then the the world
- 16:22championship performances go head to head.
- 16:25There were couple of votes. Yeah.
- 16:27The Kate O'Connor submission must have been from an Irish
- 16:30listener. So big fanboy or fangirl of Kate
- 16:33O'Connor there. Yeah, well, what's she done was
- 16:36crazy. Like to come second in our World
- 16:39Championship to get a medal there is, Yeah, in Ireland,
- 16:43like, it's pretty, pretty crazy. And I think we should just leave
- 16:47by the Cloudy Down. Just don't mention her.
- 16:52Well, no, to be fair, she she's double and world Champs
- 16:55medallist as well. You have to take it as what it
- 16:57is for now. Yeah.
- 16:59So I'm sure in the same manner that I invite Jimmy on to come
- 17:03and receive his award, you'll invite Beatrice on to receive
- 17:06her award. Yeah, I'll slide into DM's
- 17:10there. Maybe her agent could come on
- 17:14and represent her, yeah. I'll be good on that.
- 17:19I don't know have that interview.
- 17:23That'll be the end of these little podcast.
- 17:27So I'm up next and this is INT, is it International Breakthrough
- 17:34Athlete of the Year and this was some good nominations.
- 17:39We haven't got all the details in our summary, but I'll have a
- 17:42crack. But guys, please jump in if I've
- 17:45missed details on these. But Cooper is at Lipton House.
- 17:49So the young, the 16 year old American that ran 142 to run his
- 17:55way into the US World Championship team we have, how
- 18:03do we say Mcphillips first name their own and am I going to
- 18:07butcher that? Say that again.
- 18:10Mcphillip Mcphillips first name am I going to get?
- 18:14That wrong? It's just King.
- 18:16Yeah, yeah. So he was, was he?
- 18:19Where did he finish at the world champs?
- 18:21I forget now but I know he ran exceptionally fast. 4th so 4th
- 18:26at the world champs. Niels Laros who other than the
- 18:30World Championships had a pretty remarkable year in the 1500
- 18:33metres, was very dominant in the Diamond League in the lead up to
- 18:38the World Champs and was the the favorite for a medal and was
- 18:42leading part of the final. Seth O'Donnell, who we've
- 18:45covered quite a bit was the this year was the Australian 5010
- 18:51thousand metre champion and represented Australia at the
- 18:57World Champs in the 5K. Kyle Robinson who this year at
- 19:01the start of this year finished second I think in the 3000
- 19:05metres indoors at the World Champs and was fourth outdoors
- 19:12in the 5K. Innes Fitzgerald from Great
- 19:17Britain, I can't R.E.M. Recall the performances.
- 19:21I. Think she she's like she's still
- 19:24in the under 20 category and she ran like 1439 or something at
- 19:29the London Diamond League and then after like under 23
- 19:33Europeans or something she swept like 3 golds or something silly.
- 19:38Oh, wow. OK, Max Bergen, JB.
- 19:42That's it. 100M athlete. Yeah, I think that's a listener
- 19:47submission. And I remember he ran really
- 19:52fast as well. I can't remember his exact time.
- 19:55He was pushing when you're new and some of the like Diamond
- 19:57League races and stuff and maybe it was a shout for a medal going
- 20:01into. And then Jack O'Leary, I'm
- 20:05assuming that I want you have color on his ear.
- 20:10Yeah, so he's run, he's PV over the 10K5K came 15 year old
- 20:15Cross. I think like this year he's
- 20:18kicked on a lot. He's a he's a bit of a crazy
- 20:20story as well where he was in school in America, came home,
- 20:26struggled and then he was like 71 K.
- 20:29He's his metabolism is super, super slow or something like
- 20:32that. She was like 71 KG and he went
- 20:35to his specialist and he basically said you need to lose
- 20:39like paperweight. So I think he lost like 9 KG,
- 20:41but he had like cut back all his training.
- 20:44So he done like super, super safely and yeah, he ran like
- 20:481325 for the 5K. He ran 28 low, I want to say for
- 20:55the 10K and then he came €50 cross and now he is running
- 21:00Valencia where he hopes to get the European standard of 2750.
- 21:06So 26 could be a massive year for Jack.
- 21:12And so in terms of the podium we had, I'd in third was Kermit
- 21:17Phillips and Ennis Fitzgerald, second was Niels Laros and the
- 21:22winner was Seth O'Donnell. Seth had polled 1/3 of the
- 21:27votes, one in three gave him the nod.
- 21:30Did you guys have any? Oh, I feel like this one's very
- 21:34open and the polling probably reflected that.
- 21:38Did you guys have anyone that you thought was a deserved
- 21:43winner in your eyes? Yeah.
- 21:45The way you've just summarised it makes me think that, yeah,
- 21:48you can literally select any of them.
- 21:50There's a case for them all. Initially, I did also think
- 21:54Seth, but I was conscious that there's perhaps a bit of recency
- 21:58bias with Zata Pack in that and also some bias given that we're
- 22:03exposed to him quite a bit more than some of the others.
- 22:09Yeah, it's so tricky. So like for me, Kyra Robinson,
- 22:13like I know he's like NCAA champion, like a very good
- 22:18runner, but to go from like there's such a gap.
- 22:24I've seen a lot of athletes and, and we heard this on the podcast
- 22:28with. Sorry, who did you interview?
- 22:32Arwen, the Irish, She's forgetting his name.
- 22:36Andrew Cosgret and and he was talking about just trying to
- 22:39make that jump around getting super fit and then trying to
- 22:41make finals. And for him, I think this year
- 22:44was even a breakthrough for him, right, in terms of just making
- 22:47that world championship final. But there's levels to it all.
- 22:50But one thing's qualifying. So like with Seth, he did really
- 22:53well and he qualified and he made the World Championships,
- 22:57which was a big step. But then there's another one to
- 22:59like make a semi final and then there's another one again to
- 23:02make a final and then there's another one to actually be in
- 23:04the mix for medals. And I just felt like I would
- 23:07associate Kai Robinson with someone that was doing well to
- 23:12make a final, but in reality he was in the mix twice for medals
- 23:16And I, I just think that's pretty exceptional.
- 23:19So that's where I was going. But then you realize Seth
- 23:22O'donald, who was playing footy four or five years ago, beat him
- 23:27running around Perth like out kicking him like, so like what
- 23:31an exceptional year has he had? So I don't know.
- 23:34It's I feel like you can make really good cases for a lot of
- 23:37these. I think if if Laros had gone on
- 23:41to win that 1500, then it probably would have been his
- 23:44wrapped up, wouldn't it? But the season kind of like
- 23:47ended on a bit of a down. It was like kind of trending the
- 23:50right way all the way through the end.
- 23:52And somehow we got to the point where there's so much expectancy
- 23:55on him to like, if not metal at like win the gold even, which is
- 24:00like quite bizarre with hindsight now.
- 24:04But nevertheless, he's still a shout for a breakthrough given
- 24:07what he'd done. And he's still he's like 20 or
- 24:1021 himself. It just depends which like kind
- 24:13of angle of breakthrough you look at, whether it's like the
- 24:16the Seth angle, like from the bottom breaking through to just
- 24:19being on the scene or like you're saying with Kai existing
- 24:23to go into the next level. I feel like from where started
- 24:28off the year to where he finished is bigger from where
- 24:32Kai started the year to where Kai finished if you get me.
- 24:36Like set even running like thinking around 336 with no
- 24:40lights on in some in the arsehole of Australia somewhere.
- 24:44He ran 730 something in Europe to actually qualify for the
- 24:49Europeans. He came second to Amgren.
- 24:51Like who the hell would have taught that?
- 24:53And last year, that said, O'Donnell would be running all
- 24:56these times and fair enough, Kyra, like I feel Kyrobson was,
- 25:00he was really, really good last year as well.
- 25:03Like, fair enough. He was just off the medals this
- 25:04year. But yeah, Seth O'Donnell, like
- 25:07he's had such a such a good year and the only way is up for him
- 25:11now, hopefully. When we done Seth's YouTube last
- 25:15week, just whilst we're on it, I meant to say, did you see?
- 25:18I think his coach said something along the lines of like our
- 25:21Seth's been taken a lot of inspiration from Almes Almgren's
- 25:24training since he like met him and raced him in Europe.
- 25:27He's been in conversation with him back and forth.
- 25:29So he's kind of like taking his own approach, taking advice from
- 25:34Almgren and adopting some sort of hybrid model between the two,
- 25:38which like we've posted off Almgren all year as well.
- 25:40So that's like so interesting. It's very cool.
- 25:45It seems like Morgan McDonald is learning a lot of him as well
- 25:48regarding like double threshold and all that sort of stuff, so
- 25:52he seems a grown nice guy. Get him on the pod run.
- 25:55I'd love to extend the invite to Andres Almgren.
- 25:59This this episode is just going to be me inviting like half the
- 26:02athletics well down to the pod. But yeah, Seth takes the
- 26:06listeners vote for breakthrough of the year, right.
- 26:09So the next one was the listeners vote for favorite
- 26:13guest of the year. So there's pretty stellar line
- 26:16up here. We had ran to Japan.
- 26:18Jake Barraclough, Izzy Back, Doyle, Adam Fogg, Kupertier,
- 26:22Coach Raff Bar. Is it bar or boar?
- 26:25I always butcher it. Bar.
- 26:29Boar. So let's just call him RAF.
- 26:31Anyway, we know who he is by now.
- 26:33He's our coach. Well, mine and Deans.
- 26:36Andrew Kosgren, Cam Levens, Joe Wigfield and Evan Jaeger snuck
- 26:40in last minute. So there was votes pleasingly
- 26:44for all of these interviews and it was pretty well spread out.
- 26:49The the winner only took 25% of the votes.
- 26:52So in third was Dean's interview with Cam Levens.
- 26:55In second was the fan favorite in the rant to Japan specialist
- 27:00Jake Barraclough. And in first congratulations.
- 27:04Flying the flag for the women on our show was Izzy Beth Doyle.
- 27:09So she's done an amazing job. Again, Dean's interview.
- 27:12So kudos to Dean too, to outperform Jake in the rankings
- 27:19there because we know how loyal his army are.
- 27:22So I think it just gives kudos to Izzy and like how well she
- 27:26speaks on things as well, the person she is in the athlete
- 27:29that she is. Yeah, I'll get, I'll throw in
- 27:35comments, not on interviews I conducted, but the Owen's
- 27:41interview with Andrew, I felt like I got the most out of in
- 27:44the sense of getting a bit of a peek into Irish running in Irish
- 27:48culture. I don't know, I don't know about
- 27:50you, Ryan, but but I feel like when you're more familiar with
- 27:54your own local running scene, you, you know less about some
- 27:58other running scenes. And so having the opportunity to
- 28:00hear 2 Irish guys, you know, shoot the shit together, I
- 28:04really enjoyed that. Yeah, it was almost like Owen
- 28:07and Andrew were just like kind of SAT having a coffee post run
- 28:10and just having a chat and we could just listen to it all.
- 28:13It was, it was good job. I just think, I think, I think
- 28:18it's crazy that like if you told me in February and we started
- 28:22this podcast that we would have interviewed all of them people,
- 28:26I'd say not a chance. It's crazy who we've interviewed
- 28:30within the year. And yeah.
- 28:33To be fair, we had that way. It would be no chance.
- 28:37It's all Ryan. Yeah, you, you are being bullied
- 28:41into it at this stage. But now that we've all got a
- 28:45couple out of the way, I think we've we've loosened up a bit.
- 28:50Yeah. So, yeah, thanks everyone for
- 28:54your votes on that one because everyone was in with the shout.
- 28:57It was very tightly and closely contended.
- 29:01OK. Next up is fun favorite of the
- 29:05year. Yeah, so for context, this one
- 29:09was I kind of put in brackets. It doesn't necessarily have to
- 29:12be like the the best athlete in the world that can literally be
- 29:15anyone, but just like someone who is your your favorite
- 29:18athlete or like you really love following the journey type
- 29:21thing. So some of the people here were
- 29:26Alex Yi and Jordy Beamish, Jacobi writs in ran to Japan,
- 29:33Jess Danson, Jess Hall, Josh Kerr, K O'Connor set, Dean
- 29:38Menzies winning back-to-back, Bunbury Half Marathon and
- 29:43Bridges like the fucking legend he is.
- 29:47That's very specific, Dean. Do you put that one in yourself?
- 29:52I stand by the The truth is, I tried to open Ryan's Google Doc
- 29:59age gap here that that's not me. Maybe earlier on when I asked
- 30:06asked you both to reflect on your your wins and your losses,
- 30:08Dean was like trying to go back to the good times in the.
- 30:12Early, early year. And the winner was a four way
- 30:18tie between Callum Nelson, Jordy Beamish, Jake Barclough and Seth
- 30:24O'Donnell. Which yeah, 4 great
- 30:27personalities of the sport. Who share a lot of stuff.
- 30:30So yeah, I can see how they would be the fan favorites.
- 30:34Jordy Beamish is a rogue when I feel.
- 30:36But yeah, the other guys, fair play.
- 30:40How do we we can't settle it on a four way tie, but it's also
- 30:43like listener awarded. So how do we tear apart from it
- 30:47being awarded to four people or does it just stand as four of
- 30:54them? My thinking was like with Jake
- 30:58and Seth, they've both featured in nominations for awards prior
- 31:03to this, so they may have been in the mind of listeners.
- 31:05Whereas with Callum Nelson and Geordie Beamish, they haven't
- 31:09been listed yet. So people have like properly
- 31:12thought about them to submit them.
- 31:14But I can't. I don't want to speak on behalf
- 31:16of people because they've already spoken.
- 31:18I. Think they are good four names
- 31:22like Callum Nelson, all four of them give us insight into them
- 31:29as people and them as as athletes.
- 31:32And they've all had great years themselves or provided great
- 31:37content. So I feel like that's probably,
- 31:39it's a really good for I feel like if you want to follow any
- 31:41of those or or if you do, you probably appreciate it as fans
- 31:46of them what they do. So I don't know.
- 31:48I think it's good to keep support.
- 31:51Yeah, Callum Nelson's recent outspokenness as well as really
- 31:56made them more interesting to follow because you love not only
- 32:00the athletes results and races and training and stuff, but then
- 32:04like when they start being opinionated and giving you like
- 32:07a glimpse into the inside of what goes on, that's even more
- 32:10cool of a follow. Yeah, and I like Jordy Beamish
- 32:15on the Coffee Cup podcast. Like, he's very reserved, and I
- 32:21think we spoke about this before, but four or five years
- 32:23ago he was sort of at a bit of a crossroads with his running and
- 32:26the other guys were having a lot more success.
- 32:29And in the last 24 months he's won two world world titles in
- 32:33two different events. So, which is pretty cool all.
- 32:38Right then, to the four of them, it is fan favorites of the year.
- 32:43And I'm up with the easy to all moment of the year.
- 32:47So how people are thanks for putting some great suggestions.
- 32:52I'll I'll just read them off. So Brian's coffee stain slash
- 32:58Pilates attempt Owen hiding on drug cheats.
- 33:05All of the honest track about drug cheats that you might pick
- 33:08up a thing accidentally mixing mixing up KPI gun and chef and
- 33:14get it. I would love to know who that
- 33:17who offers that was because I can't remember.
- 33:20I remember because it was me again, talk with reference to
- 33:27drugs as well, when we all spoke about partners being the voice
- 33:31of reason, easing back into training after injury, that was
- 33:35great. That was probably just me and
- 33:37you, Dean. Yeah, most definitely.
- 33:41Can't remember what we said there.
- 33:45Owen saw rants and other brands Cam Evans interviewed.
- 33:50Thanks for the shout out. And it's I absolutely,
- 33:53absolutely bloody love. I was systematically burning
- 33:56every potential sponsor bridge by bridge, one-on-one,
- 33:59brilliantly productive reviews. And then Ryan's bike crashed
- 34:04just at the end. And the winner was was it?
- 34:11We did. We have two winners.
- 34:14Yeah. So Ryan's coffee stain slash
- 34:16Pilates attempt and Alan's rants sabotaging every potential
- 34:21sponsor. So what do we think about that?
- 34:25I think it's nice that the moment of the year isn't.
- 34:30I wouldn't isn't solely, I wouldn't sabotage in every
- 34:33sponsor we could have and it's tied with something else.
- 34:35But it's unfortunate that that comes at my expense.
- 34:38Although that was pretty funny, to be fair.
- 34:42I remember it fondly. I can't.
- 34:45I'd love to say for any new listeners who've like picked up
- 34:48the pod since then what episode it was in, but off the top of my
- 34:51head I can't recall it. I'll summarize that.
- 34:54I went to a Pilates class and noticed in the mirror that there
- 34:59was a brown stain on my shorts. So obviously panic stations sat
- 35:03in and I quickly nipped off to the toilet and took off my
- 35:07shorts and start smelled the stain.
- 35:12Thankfully to realize that I'd just sat in ground coffee beans
- 35:16and it wasn't anything else. But I still had to scrub the
- 35:19shorts clean using the the sink in the bathroom and then putting
- 35:22them under the hand dryer. Given that, I didn't want to be
- 35:24walking around with what blatantly looked like a poo
- 35:28stain on my shorts. Happens to the best of us,
- 35:31right? It's all right.
- 35:33Well, I hope it does to certainly happen to me.
- 35:38You can be put to use it with that nice that little place at
- 35:40the minute, that's for sure. Where are we next?
- 35:44We're now on to the So we had the British, Irish and
- 35:48Australian categories representing each of the hosts.
- 35:51So I'll do the British ones. Oh and I'll do the Irish ones,
- 35:54Dean, I'll do the Australian ones.
- 35:56So for the British male of the year, there may be some recency
- 35:59bias in here, although I am leaning towards the the winner.
- 36:04So the winner by a country mile receiving 2/3 of the vote was
- 36:07Alex Yee. So Alex recently running the
- 36:11second fastest British marathon of all time behind only Mo Farah
- 36:15in Valencia and it was only ever his second marathon as well,
- 36:20which is quite bizarre. And then The funny thing is when
- 36:23you try and like critique or cross check these votes to think
- 36:27like was anyone else in with a shout?
- 36:29You go on Alex's World Athletics profile to think like how can I
- 36:33back it up? What else has he done?
- 36:35And the truth is he hasn't actually done much else because
- 36:38he's triathletes. He doesn't need to do much else
- 36:41either. It's absolutely phenomenal.
- 36:44So the other nominations were Max Bergen, George Mills, Josh
- 36:48Kerr, Jake Whiteman, Scott BC, Phil Sussman and Emil Caress,
- 36:53Josh Kerr and Emil Caress receiving votes as well.
- 36:58Any agreements or disagreements with that?
- 37:02I feel. No, I think Alex, see, oh,
- 37:06because he had like a really good track season.
- 37:08Like so we ran London while you're at 2:11, then he actually
- 37:13done a few track 5K races, done Valencia half and then just
- 37:18smashed the marathon in Valencia.
- 37:20Like all around. He's had such a phenomenal a
- 37:22year while like being a Charlie at the end of the day.
- 37:25So yeah, I think it's sort of a no brainer.
- 37:29Like Jake Weikman, like his World Championships, second is
- 37:33pretty good as well. But it's just Alex.
- 37:36She had a phenomenal year. Yeah, it's hard with.
- 37:42Sorry, Dean, you go. Oh no, I was just going to say I
- 37:46feel like so few Setsman and Emil Perez and they've dedicated
- 37:52their their lives to running fast marathons in the marathon
- 38:00and Alex, he's jumped ahead of them on the all time list.
- 38:03So I feel like, and he's the triathlete and so he's going to
- 38:08have mass associated like physical math that's specific to
- 38:12the swim and bike and he's gone past them.
- 38:15So I feel like you have to give him the nod over them, right.
- 38:20And then for me, it's a question of maybe whether or not George
- 38:23Mills, what did George, I'm trying to just find what George
- 38:26Mills ran in the because he broke the didn't he break the
- 38:31British record? He ran 12:46 this year and so
- 38:37that's only is that second to Andreas earns 1244 like he's
- 38:46only took it I think. Did he run at the time?
- 38:48What was the European record? I'm pretty sure this year.
- 38:53In May, well have done. Yeah, I think he done something
- 38:55silly in the 3K as well indoors at one point early on in the
- 38:58year. So you forget what's happened in
- 39:00like the indoors in February and stuff, don't you?
- 39:03Yeah, so like, so he's run, so he's ranked.
- 39:07He's he's ranked #20 all time in the 5K, which is pretty
- 39:14remarkable. So that performance is
- 39:16exceptional. And then Wyman to go from
- 39:19injured to what was he less than 1/10 away from World
- 39:24Championship gold in the 1500. So those two times were pretty
- 39:29exceptional. Performances were pretty
- 39:31exceptional. But Alex here, given that he
- 39:33does two other disciplines to go #2 all time in the marathon, I
- 39:38don't know. You could, to be fair, probably
- 39:41easily make a case for white men like given where he was maybe at
- 39:44the start of the year to what he ended up doing.
- 39:46But then you also have to put the lens on that at the end of
- 39:50the day, he has actually won gold before.
- 39:53So although in the context of this year, it was like an
- 39:56amazing turn around, it's not an achievement he hasn't got
- 40:00before. Don't know.
- 40:02And then Scott BC like kind of ends.
- 40:04He done something ridiculous indoors early on in the year and
- 40:07then he ends the year on a high as well.
- 40:09So it depends. Like, no, it's tough.
- 40:14But yeah, I mean, actually he gets all the votes.
- 40:19And he's really good YouTube channel which chair on the cake.
- 40:23We get the insight which we all love.
- 40:26Also for someone like George Mills, the case that you made
- 40:31from there, Dean is legit, but then how much weight do you give
- 40:35to the fact that the main thing this year was world champs and
- 40:38then ultimately he didn't really perform there?
- 40:42Yeah, like that's like at the end of day, you want to perform
- 40:46a world champs. And George Mills, what did he
- 40:49run this year? 1250, Something 46 and 46 and
- 40:54then to like literally jog around in, in Japan, like, I
- 41:00don't know, like you're meant to peek at them sort of stages.
- 41:03So he got it all wrong if you'd like.
- 41:07It's all well and good running world record or running really
- 41:10fast and freaking January, February, March, but you really
- 41:14want to do it when it matters. So yeah, that's my $0.02.
- 41:20I'd say if he can stay injury free he'd be hungry as anything
- 41:23for 2026 though, so I would not doubt an medal on one or both of
- 41:30the Europeans in the Comm Games. Do you know what's wrong with
- 41:33George Mills? Because I've seen he's just
- 41:34cycling at the moment. Yes, we had that really broken
- 41:38arm, didn't he? But that was a it'll be well
- 41:40over that he was training even with the cast on.
- 41:42And then I'm not sure actually what's been going on, to be
- 41:45fair. They say all the greats break
- 41:48their arm and then pop on the butt.
- 41:51Yeah, it depends. Just depends if you've if you've
- 41:53got it in yet to bounce back real quick and real hard.
- 41:55Some of us have, some of us haven't.
- 42:02OK, so Alex, she won the male category, the female category
- 42:05before I hand over to the Irish category was up for
- 42:11contestation. Don't know if that's a word, but
- 42:14we'll go with it. Between the nominees were Abby
- 42:21Donnelly, Natasha Wilson, Jess Warner, Jord Rose, Harvey Irish,
- 42:25Mccolgan, Callie Horger, Thackery, Megan, Keith Hannah,
- 42:28not all and a couple of others which are cut off the page.
- 42:32Now the votes. This was quite closely
- 42:35contended. So in 3rd place with 16.1% of
- 42:39the votes was Natasha Wilson, who again a bit of recency
- 42:44involved here, just ran that 224.
- 42:47Was it in Valencia? In 2nd place was Abby Donnelly
- 42:51with 25% of the votes and in first place with 33% of the
- 42:56votes was Irish Mccolgan. I've done a bit of digging
- 43:00around this one, so I do have an opinion, but I will offer you
- 43:05both a challenge or an agree in the first instance.
- 43:11Like I'd go with Irish Mccolgan as well.
- 43:13I'm not really familiar with what the other girls have have
- 43:16really done. And I just know as Mccolgan is
- 43:19like the record holder for like 5K10K, she's a good runner.
- 43:23So yeah, I don't really know on this one.
- 43:28This is we've got some news coming through the WhatsApp chat
- 43:31there that contestation might be a word, the action or process of
- 43:37disputing or arguing. So it is very much up for
- 43:40contestation. Do you have an opinion, Dean, on
- 43:45these British women? I'm trying to.
- 43:49Put all their performances. Alongside their names, I'm
- 43:51trying to remember yes, so this. Is kind.
- 43:56Of what I was trying to do as you offline before we start
- 43:59recording, you guys see my tabs open and it was all of their
- 44:03World Athletics profiles. So the comparison I was drawing
- 44:08was that Abby Donnelly, Jess Warner, Jord and Ailish Mccolgan
- 44:14all ran 224 their thereabouts in a marathon, which is an
- 44:20exceptional time. It is where it is.
- 44:23They also all ran either 68 or 69 minutes over the half
- 44:27marathon. And I don't think any of them, I
- 44:30could be wrong, I can't remember exactly, but I don't think any
- 44:34of them represented GB as the world champs.
- 44:37And now as we spoke about, that may not be because they didn't
- 44:41deserve to, it may more so be because British Athletics didn't
- 44:45select them for one reason or another.
- 44:47But I think that Kali Thackery may be the deserving winner of
- 44:51this award given she ran 222 and finished 6th at Boston.
- 44:56Like literally the other episode we spoke about Boston and how
- 44:59times may or may not be purely fair there.
- 45:04But she's did still run two run 222 and she's actually ran
- 45:08quicker than that before she ran at Maragami, which we were all
- 45:12at, where Izzy broke the Australian marathon half
- 45:14marathon record. Cali finished ahead of her and
- 45:17she ran 6658, which is quite incomprehensible given how
- 45:23ridiculous we know Izzy's run was.
- 45:25And how ridiculous of an athlete we know is he is to be beaten by
- 45:30Cali. And so yeah, that put a #3 Brit
- 45:36on the all time list. And she was also, she ran a
- 45:38really fast 10K in 30-50 to go #5 on the all time Brit list.
- 45:41So I think just because the way her years shaped out, well
- 45:46actually, sorry, she competed at the world champs as well.
- 45:49So that was her other win. She finished 11th in the 10K.
- 45:53But I think because perhaps post the world champs she's kept
- 45:57racing and those performances perhaps haven't been up to par
- 46:02or of her usual standard, we think that her year may not have
- 46:06been that great, but prior it was.
- 46:09Who is ahead of her in the half? Marathon all time?
- 46:13Like who's run faster? Yeah, So Eilish, she's the
- 46:17record holder. She's run like 65 something I
- 46:20think it was. I'll just get it up here because
- 46:22I had it up before Paula Radcliffe as well had Eilish.
- 46:28Just ran 6543. And Paula Radcliffe, 6647.
- 46:33That's the question. Why?
- 46:35Why is Georgia Hunter Bell and Kelly Hodgkinson not?
- 46:38Why are they excluded? I think they're.
- 46:41On the two which we can't. See on the page just to cut off,
- 46:46but let me just check because that's a good question.
- 46:52We're a British female of the year.
- 46:56Yeah, they were included Georgia, I think I've.
- 47:01Completely messed this. Up and had a bit of colour
- 47:03blindness in the temper in the results.
- 47:08Oh no. Keely got 32% of the vote and
- 47:11Georgia got 28% of the vote. Well.
- 47:15Done, Ryan, you had one job that would make that would make.
- 47:22To me because I only spent. A lot of the year injured.
- 47:26I think, yeah. What?
- 47:29The hell. Because this.
- 47:32Because there's so many nominees for this, the colors very
- 47:35closely overlap and I've lazily misinterpreted it.
- 47:39Oh, and I feel like we're in your pantry right now.
- 47:43Sorry. Half the fuel.
- 47:47I. Think Keely was a bit.
- 47:48Washed this year like Georgia, Hunter Bell deserves a mansion.
- 47:51She had such a good year. Yeah, I mean, so for clarity,
- 47:56let's. Rewrite those results.
- 47:58I've just spent 5 minutes arguing for Kali for no reason
- 48:00whatsoever. In 3rd place was in Fitzgerald
- 48:04with 16% of the votes. In second place was Georgia
- 48:07Hunter Bell with 28% of the vote, and in first place was
- 48:10Keely with 32% of the vote. Which makes a lot more sense.
- 48:16So based on those results, do we agree or?
- 48:18Disagree with Keely winning over Georgia Hunter Bell I'd say.
- 48:24No, I think Keely had some better Diamond League
- 48:28performances, didn't she? But when it I think to Owen's
- 48:31point, when it really matters is the world championship and in
- 48:36the head to head Georgia Hunter Bell Beta.
- 48:42Yeah, I agree. So she came away with the
- 48:44bronze. Keeley came away with the bronze
- 48:46to Georgia's silver, and Georgia kind of made that gamble
- 48:51decision, didn't she, to go all in on the 800 meters.
- 48:53And it's pretty much paid off for us.
- 48:55So I think you also have to like kind of give us some credit for
- 48:59taking a bit of a risk if you want there given the 1500 was
- 49:03more so a traditional event. Yeah, absolutely.
- 49:07I agree with that. Keeley getting second in the
- 49:12vote. In our votes and no, I mean, she
- 49:16did still win a bronze medal. But again, do you compare these
- 49:20athletes to their previous standards given that she's won
- 49:23gold before and then therefore think that she spent 2/3 of the
- 49:27year injured, it wasn't that good of a year?
- 49:30Or do you say, well, she spent 2/3 of the year injured and
- 49:33still came away with the bronze medal?
- 49:37Maybe it's. Fair, because I don't know.
- 49:39But Keeley standards like she. Would have wanted to break that
- 49:41rec world record. I think like that's 100% much
- 49:44going for next year. She just needs a clean bill of
- 49:47health. So like I've started year.
- 49:50Would would George Bell have like put herself ahead of
- 49:55Keeley? Absolutely not.
- 49:56So I think Georgia Hunter Bell had like the better year all
- 49:58around. Yeah, I think you have to.
- 50:01Just take the year as it. Is like, say on the 1st of Jan,
- 50:04you don't know who's going to be injured or who's going to have
- 50:06all this bad luck, that it just kind of is what it is and you
- 50:09judge it based on that. So yeah, that's fair, right?
- 50:14Tell us. What the people?
- 50:15Spoke about and thought of Ireland so.
- 50:20The Irish male out of the athlete.
- 50:22Of the year in joint third was Nick Griggs and King.
- 50:28Mcphillips. With 16% of the votes or does
- 50:32join second. Sorry.
- 50:33And first was a fertile curtain who got 20% of the votes.
- 50:37So Fergal set their national record over the half marathon.
- 50:41He ran 60 low and then he set the new marathon record on a
- 50:47hilly course in South Korea. He ran two O 7 and like Kim
- 50:54Mcphillips had. Such a good and world.
- 50:56Champs coming out of nowhere to get and forth and I'd argue if
- 51:01he had a better lane draw. That's another thing that
- 51:04actually pisses me off like the chop won his heats, he won his
- 51:08semi final and then he gets shafted into lane one in his
- 51:11frickin final. Like make please that make make
- 51:14that make sense. Like it doesn't so like arguably
- 51:19he could be a world medalist if he actually got the lane draw he
- 51:22deserved. Umm or there are no mentions
- 51:25where Dan Michael Haney, Jack O'Leary, Andrew Cosgren, but
- 51:28like Andrew Cosgren making a world final.
- 51:31Like that's another not mention. Like he sort of levelled up
- 51:34again. And but yeah, further current
- 51:39have two national records. It's it's like, especially like.
- 51:44Long standing ones in a. Way.
- 51:45So yeah, I probably, I can't really argue with them with that
- 51:51one prior. To this year was Fergal.
- 51:55Care and a potential national record holder, as in like, is he
- 52:00almost a breakthrough athlete as well or?
- 52:04He's run 13 high for 5K. Like he, unlike he was in
- 52:08America, he's doing in America. He's like running in America.
- 52:11So you don't really know what type of stuff he's doing because
- 52:14he's on that American circuit, but I wouldn't have put him as a
- 52:2060 low guy and the Irish record holder put it that way.
- 52:25So yeah, it probably is sort of a breakthrough year for him.
- 52:29Like he's still unsponsored now. He'll probably sign for someone
- 52:32on the 1st January. But yeah, like phenomenal
- 52:36running. Like he's right up there now
- 52:38with the best in Europe. Are you about to take?
- 52:41Off in a helicopter or. You just jumped inside the
- 52:44washing machine. Oh, can you hear that?
- 52:47That's the washing machine. Give me a SEC.
- 52:53Oh, that's better I. Was inside.
- 52:56It for a minute there. And went straight from his
- 52:59pantry into the is the water. I thought maybe you were sitting
- 53:02in the in the industrial in a laundromat or something.
- 53:06Right. All right.
- 53:10We need. We need.
- 53:11Them to do as. Buddy females, but maybe we'll
- 53:13just go back once as watch finish before while we while
- 53:18we've. Got some some airspace here.
- 53:20Just some just a thought on the men's, Irish men's results like
- 53:264th at a world championship. I was just looking back through
- 53:29like Irish world championship medalists and there's not in
- 53:33athletics and there's not a heap.
- 53:35And so to finish 4th at a World Championships is pretty
- 53:39exceptional, right? And not only that, but the men's
- 53:44800 is going through like a like 5 or 5 or so years ago when
- 53:50Peter Bowl finished fourth. When Peter Bowl finished fourth.
- 53:59At the Olympics in Tokyo, I think he was running like 144
- 54:05low 144 mid to medal there. I thought those guys were
- 54:10running like 142 in the final at Tokyo.
- 54:12So I think the the competition's got even more fierce and the
- 54:17it's got even faster and he's competitive.
- 54:19So yeah, I don't know two very good candidates I would have
- 54:24thought. Yeah, well, if.
- 54:26You think back, we spoke about the 800.
- 54:28Oh, yeah, and the potential impending world record.
- 54:31And there was like 5 or 6 people who could have done it.
- 54:34There was 1. Yoni, Max Bergen.
- 54:38Donovan Brazier was making his comeback.
- 54:41Josh Howey, That's a Josie. And not once had I whispered the
- 54:47words came Mcphillips. So to then end up finishing
- 54:49fourth is, yeah, outrageous. But yeah, you also.
- 54:54Appreciate the you. Know those long standing records
- 54:56whenever they do get broken? Like, that's quite a monumental
- 54:59thing too. And we move on to the women.
- 55:05OK, so the women is a 4A tie for third with Alex O'Neal, Emma
- 55:16Hickey for Neil McCormick and Neve Allen.
- 55:19Second was Sophie O'Sullivan and #1 which is probably just a
- 55:25stand up performance. Sarah Haley she'd 41% of the
- 55:28votes. She's with that group where
- 55:30Keely and and. Georgia Hunter.
- 55:35Bell so yeah, she's at a phenomenal year.
- 55:37She won diamond leagues. She performed really well
- 55:39throughout. Yeah, sort of a sort of a no
- 55:43brainer on that one. Really really good from Sarah
- 55:45this year did how? Far through the world champs.
- 55:49Did she got that? She got out of the heats.
- 55:52She was lucky. I think she.
- 55:54Got as like fastest loser or something like that I remember.
- 55:59Again in the early. Part of the year she was having
- 56:02some really strong performances, wasn't she?
- 56:04That she may be finished like second at a Diamond League or
- 56:06even win 1. And she won a Diamond League,
- 56:12which is. Crazy so.
- 56:15Yeah, she's. She she just had a really,
- 56:17really, really good year all around.
- 56:19Emma Hickey, the young, she was tied for 1/3.
- 56:22She is like 16 and she won bronze at the Euro cross there,
- 56:27so she's won for the future. Fenilla McCormick just stand out
- 56:31like she's just I think she's run 5 Olympics now and Sophie
- 56:36O'Sullivan and 2nd is a bit of a rogue one might be because of
- 56:40her mother is running royalty. But yeah, Sarah's just hands and
- 56:44winner. Did Sarah Healy win?
- 56:48Is it European gold in was it or out of the year?
- 56:51Yeah, yeah, yeah. You know one of the nominees
- 56:56there, Emily. Hagard Kearney, we probably
- 56:59wouldn't have heard of her but funny story, the club that Joe
- 57:03Wigfield runs for Wirral AC, she is a part of that club.
- 57:07So for me to then, because she used to race some of the local
- 57:11Rd. races that I would do when I was running for Wallasey and at
- 57:14the time she was in College in America somewhere.
- 57:17But she would often come back home and put Wirrals vest on
- 57:22because like the Cairney family are like notorious locally for
- 57:26having like just they must have like 5 or 6 kids and they're all
- 57:29always really good runners. So then for me to see her
- 57:33representing Ireland, I was quite confused.
- 57:35But there must be some Irish family heritage somewhere.
- 57:39So there's one that's gone the other way.
- 57:41I went usually to come and back our way.
- 57:44Yeah, we got one back on. Yes, thank God.
- 57:46I've never heard of them before so be interested.
- 57:48She used to. She used to smack off all the.
- 57:51Fellas from our club, it's you. I'll have to have a.
- 57:56Look at our head to heads. Maybe so on to the Aussies.
- 58:03In the men's we had in terms of nominations, we had Cam Myers,
- 58:08Kai Robinson, Seth O'Donnell, Sam Clifford, Isaac Kane, Adam
- 58:12Goddard, Ed Marks and Peter Boll and.
- 58:16The from 3rd to. First third was Kai Robinson
- 58:19with just over 20% of the votes, Seth O'donnell's second with 33%
- 58:24of the votes and Cam in 37% of the votes was the winner.
- 58:29Cam Miners yeah, interesting results.
- 58:36I think like because at the world Champs we had three guys,
- 58:42the three that went, I think we're all ranked around 30th in
- 58:47the world going into it with their world championship ranking
- 58:50positions. But none of them made it out of
- 58:52the heats which included. Cam But he did.
- 58:55Win the World Cross Selection Trials race.
- 59:00Cross Country was the winner of the Australian 1500 meter champs
- 59:05and I think maybe finished third in the 5K behind Seth and Kai
- 59:14earlier in the year in the 5K in Perth.
- 59:20What did Cam do? Like other than that he didn't.
- 59:22Really do like, Fair enough, All right.
- 59:25Super. Young kid, loads of variable.
- 59:27He didn't really have a great year, did he?
- 59:30Like the championship at the end of the year, he just totally
- 59:32bottled, didn't he? Yeah, I don't know.
- 59:35With where the. Where the votes come from for
- 59:38him and taken almost half of them.
- 59:40I mean, obviously he's like a a national poster boy and star
- 59:45boy, but and he's the most. Recognizable name, but that's.
- 59:49All I can think of, because yeah, I'd be handing it to Kai,
- 59:53given what we spoke about earlier.
- 59:55He did run. He did run to World under 20
- 1:00:00records or maybe sorry. 1. But both within the same race.
- 1:00:06So he ran an indoor mile in 347 and on route to that round 332,
- 1:00:12which were both Australian as well as world records for under
- 1:00:1920s. OK like that is.
- 1:00:21Crazy good as well. But I think like bigger picture
- 1:00:24Kai Robson, like you wouldn't have put him coming forth in the
- 1:00:27world and this year. So yeah, I think Kai all.
- 1:00:33Around peaked. At the right times, so he
- 1:00:35deserves it. Even though the listeners get
- 1:00:39the final say. Yeah.
- 1:00:43I just got this one wrong. Bloody our listeners, we've been
- 1:00:47telling you. Oh yeah, and then.
- 1:00:56In the women's but we had as nominees Jess Hall, Claudia
- 1:01:02Hollingsworth, Sarah Billings, Georgia Griffith, Linden Hall,
- 1:01:05Lauren Ryan, Rose Davies or Rosie Davis and Izzy Bet Doyle.
- 1:01:12Jess and Leanne I think. We're also in there, but they
- 1:01:15were cut off. The screenshot of course, can.
- 1:01:20We just go back, Cam. I think he's been, he's dropped
- 1:01:23out of the world cross country trials for some, I think it says
- 1:01:27medical reasons. So in his place is going to be
- 1:01:34Jack Anstey. So yeah, I wonder what's
- 1:01:37happening with Cam there. Well.
- 1:01:41That's interesting as well because wasn't the conversation
- 1:01:44around the 2nd place? Cam had the 1st place, then it
- 1:01:47was like oh will Ollie whore or Jude Thomas get it?
- 1:01:50So then a place becomes available and it doesn't go to
- 1:01:53Jude Thomas, but maybe he's already locked in some indoor
- 1:01:56races or something instead. Yeah, I presume so.
- 1:02:02Does that? Well, clearly it weakens.
- 1:02:04The Australian bid for because I think they they were looking at
- 1:02:06maybe challenging for gold or at least a medal over that mixed
- 1:02:09relay distance. I wonder how much damage it
- 1:02:13does. Yeah, you don't think it?
- 1:02:16I doubt it helps our chances, particularly given how Cam raced
- 1:02:19at the cross country trials. Right.
- 1:02:21He looked pretty fit. So getting back to the.
- 1:02:26Women's performances, we had tied for third, Leanne and Izzy
- 1:02:29in second, Jess and and the winner would just hole and Jess
- 1:02:36Hall was quite a ways ahead 58%. So over half.
- 1:02:39That's one of the strongest polls of the of all of the votes
- 1:02:44we collected, I think, I think. It's a.
- 1:02:48It's a. Fair result, but there's some
- 1:02:53pretty. Exceptional performances.
- 1:02:54Like, easiest performance in the half marathon that was an
- 1:02:57Australian record. Yeah, Stenson's performance
- 1:03:01marathon to break the marathon Australian record as well, both
- 1:03:07very exceptional performances and then, but I think Jess Hull
- 1:03:11ran wreck Australian records of her own, I think, as well as
- 1:03:15meddling at a major championship.
- 1:03:19Yeah, which is fair. Enough like you.
- 1:03:22Get sucked into the again, recency bias with Jess's
- 1:03:24breaking the marathon record. And I think maybe it's been
- 1:03:28raised by listeners in the past that like kind of so much weight
- 1:03:30is placed on the marathon over like track races.
- 1:03:38But yeah, Jess was. Competitive all year on the
- 1:03:40global stage and then, OK, yeah, she comes away with the bronze
- 1:03:44and not the silver that she'd had the year prior or an
- 1:03:47upgraded gold. But still just because I feel
- 1:03:52like I've contradicted myself all the way throughout this
- 1:03:54episode like by saying, oh, you can't measure them based on what
- 1:03:59they've done before. You have to just look at it now.
- 1:04:00But at the end of the day, is still a bronze medal on the
- 1:04:04global stage. And then you're trying to make a
- 1:04:06case for other people who are like, just competing on the
- 1:04:09global stage. So Jess is the wealthy winner as
- 1:04:14well? In my opinion.
- 1:04:16Yeah, I think Jess deserves it. That she's up there with the
- 1:04:20East kind, East Africans, and she was very even the way she
- 1:04:24raced it, fair enough. It didn't work out, but she was
- 1:04:26really brave going with the going with Faith and also, yeah,
- 1:04:30she's just phenomenal. She's going toe to toe.
- 1:04:33With arguably. The the greatest of all time,
- 1:04:36Faith Capy Aegon. So how can you not award it to
- 1:04:40her? Like yeah, Faith, Capy, Aegon
- 1:04:42isn't. There Jess is winning World
- 1:04:43Championships, which is pretty crazy.
- 1:04:47Now we've got. The last award of the.
- 1:04:49Year is almost the. The easy double.
- 1:04:55I don't know the YouTube Diaries of the year, essentially the
- 1:04:57YouTube of the I don't want to call them YouTube of the year,
- 1:04:59but that's that's what the award is.
- 1:05:02So then who who wants to crown this one?
- 1:05:04Because it's our very own award. Feel like you 2 have been.
- 1:05:08Big advocates of YouTube. Diaries throughout the year?
- 1:05:12Yeah, go for. I will then.
- 1:05:15In 3rd is Team Macau which is the British based TOCA sponsored
- 1:05:19team with Callum Nelson, Scott B, Roy Leonard, Sarah Austin.
- 1:05:24India Weir. Them boys so they came third
- 1:05:28second Clayton Young for his his marathon documenting is just
- 1:05:33crazy, crazy God great insight into.
- 1:05:36What he does? And then he backs it up with
- 1:05:38some really good, really good results.
- 1:05:40Is just a shame Valencia didn't happen because I think everyone
- 1:05:43was looking forward to that one. And then number one, it's sort
- 1:05:46of good sort of finished here like this because he's just
- 1:05:50released a one hour sort of documentary, like sort of like
- 1:05:54umm, Netflix style documentary thing.
- 1:05:56Today it's Jake Barclough, Mr. Rant to Mr. Rant to Japan.
- 1:06:02Yeah, he just he's so funny, great insight into running.
- 1:06:06He does crazy shit and he's just, yeah, really likable
- 1:06:11person. So I think no one will have any
- 1:06:13complaints that Jake wins YouTube of the year.
- 1:06:17And like in dismissive year he's gotten like 100,000 subscribers
- 1:06:21which like again, it's just crazy how big his channel has
- 1:06:25grown. So yeah, kudos to Jake, I think.
- 1:06:31So yeah, we had, in terms of the shortlist, the other people we
- 1:06:35had in there was Izzybat Doyle, Yakobinka, Brits, and Phil
- 1:06:38Sessman, Alexia, Adam Fogg and a few others.
- 1:06:42And they're all great YouTube content creators for sure.
- 1:06:46And some of the quality, like for some of those channels is
- 1:06:50outrageously good. But I think the fact is, you
- 1:06:54know, every Sunday, you know when it's coming out, you know,
- 1:06:59when the video drops, you, you have a bit of a theme, you, you
- 1:07:02know the style, you know what to expect.
- 1:07:04And you, you're following his journey week to week.
- 1:07:07And there's something that he either wants to talk about or
- 1:07:10something he wants to share as an experience.
- 1:07:13And I think that might set him apart.
- 1:07:14Like, you know, that regular, consistent content.
- 1:07:17It's the same with putting out a podcast.
- 1:07:18When you put it in, you know what to expect between your ears
- 1:07:21and you and you. You know what to watch.
- 1:07:23With his content. I think that's something a bit
- 1:07:26unique for him versus the others.
- 1:07:29Yeah. How could?
- 1:07:30We award it to anyone else. We've given up a.
- 1:07:34YouTube areas but he. Almost gets the plug every week.
- 1:07:38Yeah, and we just enjoy. Watching it every week.
- 1:07:39Do you have? Any highlights of favorite
- 1:07:42moments from the year? The.
- 1:07:45Training camp up in the hills and then.
- 1:07:47You see, like that one? And he liked that one as well.
- 1:07:54The for me and. Like it's funny that it's not
- 1:07:58necessarily running related, but you know, you always want people
- 1:08:02to be well, but the arm, you know, when the when the
- 1:08:06infection. Oh gosh.
- 1:08:08Like. Because he's so positive.
- 1:08:12Like, he's very, he's a very positive person, right?
- 1:08:16And it's not going to plan, I don't think.
- 1:08:18And, you know, you can relate to wanting to keep the running
- 1:08:21dream alive as well. Like, oh, it's OK.
- 1:08:23You know, I'll just keep running.
- 1:08:25And then I think his arm's going full, like septic and not going
- 1:08:29very well. And it's very, he had a very
- 1:08:32good take on it, almost a look inside his head at that.
- 1:08:35Point thinking like oh shit like I could end up dying here but if
- 1:08:40I don't at least it'll make good YouTube content.
- 1:08:46Oh dear. Yeah, so.
- 1:08:51Congrats, Jake. Congrats all of.
- 1:08:53The winners, I'll just summarise given we we offered our own
- 1:08:56opinion and maybe confuse people along the way.
- 1:08:59Male international athlete Jimmy Gressier.
- 1:09:01Female international athlete Beatrice.
- 1:09:03Shabbat breakthrough of the year, Seth O'Donnell.
- 1:09:08Favorite interview or guest? Izzy Beth Doyle.
- 1:09:12Fan favorite of the year was a four way tie between Callum
- 1:09:14Elson, Geordie Beamish, Jake Barraclough and Seth O'Donnell.
- 1:09:18Ease double moments of the year was a two way tie between Ryan's
- 1:09:21Coffee stain Pilates attempt and Owens rants.
- 1:09:24Sabotage. Sabotaging our sponsors, the
- 1:09:27British male of the year, Alex Ye.
- 1:09:29British female of the year, not Eilish Mccolgan but Keeley
- 1:09:34Hodgkinson. Irish male of the.
- 1:09:37Year Fergal Curtain. Irish Female of the year Sarah
- 1:09:40Healy, Australian Male of the year Cam Myers and Australian
- 1:09:44Female of the year Jess Hall. Well, thanks everyone who voted
- 1:09:50that. Was very fun and I enjoyed
- 1:09:51following along throughout the week seeing the the votes kind
- 1:09:56of peak and through here and there.
- 1:09:58So there were some changes. I won't go into that because the
- 1:10:00winners are the winners. The voting has closed the
- 1:10:05listeners. Have spoken and now maybe we
- 1:10:10will. Speak on wins and loss, or maybe
- 1:10:13we'll go to Owen's race recap because we have a good race from
- 1:10:16yesterday. Let's do that.
- 1:10:17Owen, tell us about your Christmas week of training and
- 1:10:21how your race went so. OK, one SEC.
- 1:10:26I need to get my this travel so it.
- 1:10:32Started. Oh yeah, so.
- 1:10:33Sunday was a big day. I was down in Limerick which is
- 1:10:39like a three hour drive from where I live.
- 1:10:42So yeah, I drove home Sunday evening.
- 1:10:47It was grand. Had a phone call with my coach
- 1:10:49and he was like saying oh if you feel tired on Monday don't just.
- 1:10:56Drop a run like. There's no point of stressing
- 1:11:00yourself out or anything like that.
- 1:11:02So Monday morning I Monday morning.
- 1:11:07I got out for. Just a 60 minute jog on the
- 1:11:11treadmill, so 12.7 K just chilling and I felt all right.
- 1:11:16And but Monday evening then I got out for one of the lads
- 1:11:20actually won the football lads Connor, he actually listens to
- 1:11:22the podcast Jedded him. He went out for a jog with him
- 1:11:26and it was just 45 minutes on some strides.
- 1:11:29And after that my legs felt really beat up like more than
- 1:11:33they should be after a 45 minute run.
- 1:11:37So got into the boots when I got home, tried to massage out,
- 1:11:41shake out the legs because I had a session on Tuesday morning so
- 1:11:47I was just conscious. Of I had a double.
- 1:11:48Session day actually Tuesday, so I was conscious of getting that
- 1:11:51done and so got off in the morning, done my usual warm up
- 1:11:55and the session was 2 by 10 minutes off 5 minutes.
- 1:12:01And it's just this little loop around a village beside me and
- 1:12:07got that done. But I felt super like bad doing
- 1:12:11it and my legs were just like they were so beat up.
- 1:12:15And so the session was I think worked at like 7.5 K 319
- 1:12:20average. So like I hit the the paces and
- 1:12:22all it's just I felt so bad doing it.
- 1:12:25So I get my gone. Is that meant to be like a
- 1:12:29double threshold? Kind of day then, with your
- 1:12:30tutions. Yes, it was supposed to be in
- 1:12:33the evening. It was meant to.
- 1:12:33Be 2 by 15 minutes and. So gave my coach.
- 1:12:38Call. And he was like, yeah, I thought
- 1:12:42you'd be tired. So he like pulled the training
- 1:12:44right back, but it was just weird, like on the Sunday he
- 1:12:49sort of knew my leg is going to be beat up.
- 1:12:51So I probably look into hindsight, probably wouldn't
- 1:12:53better off taking one of the easier ones on Monday, give my
- 1:12:56body more time to recover. But I felt all right.
- 1:12:58I was just the delayed fatigue and on the weekend, like, I
- 1:13:02probably got to bed a bit late on Saturday and it was just like
- 1:13:05a lot of little things to driving up and down.
- 1:13:08So yeah, I don't nothing Tuesday evening, nothing Wednesday just
- 1:13:13totally pulled it back and then then Thursday was Christmas Day
- 1:13:18so I got out for just 35 minute jog, AKA 420 twos per kilometer.
- 1:13:24Felt good, like the legs are coming back to me and.
- 1:13:29Then the. 3rd 26th So Boxing Day, Stevens Day, that was the
- 1:13:35Friday, so this is the day before the race now and with the
- 1:13:39Who's Steven? Stevens.
- 1:13:43Day that's I don't know who I don't.
- 1:13:44Know why they call it? That's the color over here.
- 1:13:46Saint Stephen's Day whilst. You speak, I'm going to.
- 1:13:50Find out who he was, what he done, OK?
- 1:13:55So on yeah, the 26th, it's Friday.
- 1:13:59I actually adopted Phoenix Park and I only had.
- 1:14:03Like a four. If this like pre race, so I
- 1:14:06don't like 45 minutes, I don't a 5 minute threshold and then I
- 1:14:10don't like 3 but 200 meters. But I was I was joined by some
- 1:14:14pretty cool company on this run. I was joined by Andrew Costner
- 1:14:18and Brian Faye. So then boys were doing some
- 1:14:22threshold work and yeah, I rocked up with them done warm up
- 1:14:26with them and the cool down. But yeah, just cool like here
- 1:14:30and listen them boys talk about their training and their plans
- 1:14:33for the year. It's it was pretty inspiring.
- 1:14:36So the threshold I actually wore the new shoes I got for
- 1:14:40Christmas. So I got there Puma fast or
- 1:14:43threes. So I just gave them a weeks
- 1:14:45then. So yeah, got them really good.
- 1:14:49They sort of they're not as stable as this other super shoes
- 1:14:53I've run in and boss. They're super, super poppy.
- 1:14:58They're it's not like your phone like sinks into them.
- 1:15:01So I really, really did like them.
- 1:15:03So but that that Rojo total. Run was like. 16 K, an average
- 1:15:08pace of like four O 6. I worked out.
- 1:15:10So then boys do a longer warm up and cool down.
- 1:15:13So I wasn't planning on doing a full on taper for this race
- 1:15:17because it'd be awkward because I still have another two weeks.
- 1:15:21So like next week is sort of big and then it's just a taper.
- 1:15:25But yeah, feeling good. And then yeah, go on.
- 1:15:30What what time was that run to get?
- 1:15:31Where they start an early or just 10:00?
- 1:15:35Oh yeah, professional hours. I know.
- 1:15:38It's so good. It's so good and and the warm up
- 1:15:44and cool down. They were happy to just
- 1:15:47completely jog. There's no, that's all they do
- 1:15:49anyway. Yeah, they were just.
- 1:15:50Chilling. Their session was like 3 by like
- 1:15:5412 minutes or something like that, so that was a lot fair day
- 1:15:57before. Hey.
- 1:15:59Yeah, yeah, it was a. Decent, but again, like a lot of
- 1:16:02it was just plodding around. So like there actually was only
- 1:16:065. Minutes worth of threshold.
- 1:16:07And then 3 by 200 meter strides. So it wasn't really that much.
- 1:16:12And then I thought you said 16. You say 16 K?
- 1:16:16Yeah, 16.8 K, yeah. Yeah, it's.
- 1:16:21It's a fit. What and what did you do?
- 1:16:2333K threshold and then the rest of it jogging.
- 1:16:26No, no, no. So the whole.
- 1:16:29Thing it was basically 45 minutes jog trash, 5 minute
- 1:16:33threshold, a few 2 hundreds and then it cooled down with the
- 1:16:36guys. Apologies for that 45 minutes,
- 1:16:39yeah. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:16:40Sorry, 20 minutes. Yeah, OK.
- 1:16:43So. Yeah, well, it was like an hour,
- 1:16:45like 70 minutes worth of running so much too crazy.
- 1:16:49Gotcha, Gotcha. And then yeah, Saturday morning
- 1:16:53doing my usual warmth, it will like warm up.
- 1:16:56So 15 minute jog and two by two-minute threshold and then a
- 1:17:03few strides and will you keep? That now as your normal.
- 1:17:09Warm up, do you think, like before a race, the two-minute,
- 1:17:12the 2, two-minute threshold intervals?
- 1:17:15Yeah, I feel like it sort of gets your body like.
- 1:17:18Primed as to like what's going to happen because it is like
- 1:17:21sort of like a stride. You don't really get the feeling
- 1:17:24for the pace. It's only for like a solid like
- 1:17:26like 2 minutes is nothing, but you sort of get a nice rhythm of
- 1:17:30the pace. So it's like your body knows
- 1:17:32what's going to happen and what do you, what are you?
- 1:17:36What are you doing? Then those two minutes at like,
- 1:17:38is that 3 minute K pace or 310 pace?
- 1:17:41Where were you in the middle? So it's normally like 3 minutes.
- 1:17:44Three or five, something like that, just not too hard, but
- 1:17:47you're moving. Yeah.
- 1:17:49And and then yeah, race time. So the race, the course is like
- 1:17:54pretty flat. I can't complain about the
- 1:17:56course. I was just.
- 1:17:58Going to ask before you. Go into the race, what are you
- 1:18:01thinking on the start line in terms of optimal results, what
- 1:18:05might happen and that sort of stuff?
- 1:18:07Yeah, so with the cross country like?
- 1:18:10Is I I knew always fit, but I didn't have like I didn't know
- 1:18:13how fit and because cross country like it's on grass, it's
- 1:18:17like Angel and surfaces. So you never really know how fit
- 1:18:20you are. But like I know I am fit.
- 1:18:23So like ideally go out at around like 255 in this race.
- 1:18:28Like I know I'm sort of going to be running solo.
- 1:18:30Like I didn't know any of the other boys on the start line.
- 1:18:32So sort of like a time trial. Just see how fast I can do it
- 1:18:35in. And the course is like pretty,
- 1:18:37it's pretty flat, like I think it was like 25 meters of
- 1:18:40elevation. And the whole thing like the
- 1:18:42second K is pretty. It's like all uphill but or not
- 1:18:44like it's it's pretty. It's a pretty nice course.
- 1:18:48Was it out and back or a loop? No, it was a loop.
- 1:18:51It was a loop, so you sort of. Start outside a running track.
- 1:18:54You do a little loop and you sort of finish on the running
- 1:18:57track. And what's it?
- 1:18:59Is it like 5 play? County champs What?
- 1:19:01What's the no just this just a normal 5K?
- 1:19:05After Christmas it's called like the Robbie and Rita 1.
- 1:19:09So gotcha. Yeah.
- 1:19:10OK, good setup with finishing on.
- 1:19:12The runner track and. Stuff though, yeah, it's cool,
- 1:19:15it's cool it's. Sort of it's a good feeling
- 1:19:16like, and you sort of run like onto the yeah, yeah, it's cool.
- 1:19:22And so, yeah, start off, I think this few people went with me and
- 1:19:30like the first K was like a 250, like 249.
- 1:19:34And I was like, this is a terrible way for you guys to run
- 1:19:36A5. Ki was like, I sort of felt bad
- 1:19:39because like they they wouldn't know if I'm going to hold it
- 1:19:42either. So I totally understand what
- 1:19:44they're doing. You're going to hold it.
- 1:19:46Yeah, yeah. True, and it's a wee bit
- 1:19:48downhill at the start. Have you seen that?
- 1:19:51I've seen the footage. Of you in that first 50 or so
- 1:19:54meters and you weren't, you weren't looking around for
- 1:19:57friends way. No, I sort of went for it.
- 1:20:00It looks a bit like you usually do on the start.
- 1:20:03Line Dean, you know, like all jittery and like too fast
- 1:20:05though. Yeah, he was.
- 1:20:06He was ready for I was good. And.
- 1:20:11So yeah, let look. I literally just went out hard
- 1:20:14and just felt really good. The first like 3 K 3 1/2 Ki felt
- 1:20:19super controlled and then near the last case sort of started to
- 1:20:23squeeze a little Bosch like I was solo.
- 1:20:27The hallway there was a bit of a headwind as well on the last K
- 1:20:30umm, so like like it was APB like I don't know if I count
- 1:20:34these Rd. races as APB. They're not like certified or
- 1:20:38anything. And so yeah, like 1427 solo Umm,
- 1:20:43I really, I can't complain. Like if you were to say I'd run
- 1:20:46that solo, like when I, when I finished race, I'm like, oh, I'm
- 1:20:50so, so far off. Like like the 13 minute, like
- 1:20:54guys, but umm, like hindsight, like if I, yeah, if you told me
- 1:20:58I'd run 1427 solo, I'd beat your arm off for and like I'm still
- 1:21:02heavy load. And yeah, look, I can't really.
- 1:21:06Complain. So it's umm.
- 1:21:08It's sort of a good sort of confidence booster for Valencia
- 1:21:13and you've, what have you, how long have you been?
- 1:21:15Back in Ireland for because that's really when you started
- 1:21:17training again. It's not been that long to be
- 1:21:18honest. I think I got going again in.
- 1:21:21June. Yeah, so or five months?
- 1:21:25Yeah, well. June.
- 1:21:29Yeah, well, say 7. We'll say 7.
- 1:21:31Months, OK, Sure, sure, sure, sure.
- 1:21:34And this is that your second new 5.
- 1:21:37KPB since all your first time doing it that is so I got.
- 1:21:43In Perth in January I ran 1433, then when I got home to Ireland
- 1:21:51I ran 1430 and now 1427 and. You are you on the PB?
- 1:21:59Bonus as well chipping them away.
- 1:22:05So yeah, look, it's good. I mean, really I just need to
- 1:22:08keep like I could have easily cooked myself if I didn't have
- 1:22:11that caught my coach during the week.
- 1:22:12So he just like pulls me back when I didn't be pulled back.
- 1:22:16But it's sort of like 2 weeks now.
- 1:22:18I just need to keep on the straight and narrow.
- 1:22:20I think I've like one or two more head sessions and but it's
- 1:22:23just like really easy jogging now.
- 1:22:24So I'm I'm nearly there and. That evening I got out.
- 1:22:30For a 45 minute jog, I don't 10K at 4:20 sixes, umm.
- 1:22:38And yeah, I just as soon as I get out the door, like my heart
- 1:22:41rate was pretty high. So I was really just, I was
- 1:22:44contemplating doing an hour and I was like, look, this actually
- 1:22:4615 minutes, they're going to benefit me in no way whatsoever.
- 1:22:49So umm, I am, yeah, I just left at 45.
- 1:22:52And actually when I was in Australia, I done my regional
- 1:22:57work in a place called Stall, and we were doing it with this
- 1:23:01Brazilian couple and they've actually moved to Ireland now.
- 1:23:05So they were over with us. So they went to the race and
- 1:23:08all. And so, yeah, it was good to see
- 1:23:11them them again. So yeah.
- 1:23:15And then this. Morning I done. 95 minutes where
- 1:23:1915 minute pick up in the middle and so that was 24K-350 fours.
- 1:23:27It was the last run I've retired my super blasts so I am
- 1:23:30absolutely devastated. They've got 1000 KS in them so
- 1:23:35it's time to go to the charity shop.
- 1:23:37But yeah, they'll be they'll be greatly missed in my rotation.
- 1:23:42But I love the Puma faster trees.
- 1:23:43They felt really good and. But yeah, I.
- 1:23:46Think it was 100. And 16, yeah, absolutely,
- 1:23:51absolutely. And it was 116 K for the week.
- 1:23:55And yeah, that's me. Good week, Santa delivered you a
- 1:24:01PB. Well done.
- 1:24:03Yeah, I got them shocks headphones as well.
- 1:24:05They're pretty cool, got really well looked.
- 1:24:07After by Santa, didn't you? Yeah, go.
- 1:24:10So good. Great man.
- 1:24:16I've just had to. Change location because the cat.
- 1:24:18Just had the shit right next to me.
- 1:24:19It's stung. His birthday?
- 1:24:23Shit, yeah. He's.
- 1:24:26The birthday. Cakes clearly went straight
- 1:24:29through. He's at 5:00 AM as well.
- 1:24:34No, Becky's making one forum at 5:00 AM this morning.
- 1:24:38A mashed Mashed potato, mashed sweet potato in like she put
- 1:24:43made it into a Patty, got like a little licky trees and squirted
- 1:24:47it all over the top and dotted all these like little biscuit
- 1:24:51bites on it. It's it's outrageous what's
- 1:24:53going on for this car. But yeah.
- 1:24:57You feel like you've gone down there.
- 1:24:59Are you, you know, now second favorite in the house?
- 1:25:04Absolutely. Then your running seems to have
- 1:25:11been. Taking another step in the right
- 1:25:13direction, is that a fair assumption?
- 1:25:16Yeah, I think so. Yeah, I am moving a bit better
- 1:25:24each day, week on week. It's getting better.
- 1:25:28This week I ran 93 KS, so a bit of a step up from the last four
- 1:25:36weeks, in part because I was riding less as well.
- 1:25:42As we mentioned from about whenever it was Thursday with
- 1:25:45Christmas and those sorts of things.
- 1:25:47I've just stepped out for a couple of smaller jogs and not
- 1:25:51done our traditional bike intervals.
- 1:25:54And then I didn't do our long ride yesterday just because it's
- 1:25:57been a bit messy at home. But yeah, I, I ventured down,
- 1:26:03Ron and I ventured down to the track on Tuesday just to meet a
- 1:26:06few of the guys that were in town.
- 1:26:09And I did test out moving a bit quicker, which felt nice, but
- 1:26:13mechanically I was a little bit uncomfortable in the days after,
- 1:26:16which is not to be. Not unexpected.
- 1:26:20But just frustrating because you know that any discomfort is
- 1:26:24means you're sort of not right to absolutely let RIP.
- 1:26:27But yeah, things are going well. I think inching closer it's just
- 1:26:33loading it up. Slowly and.
- 1:26:36You know. Introducing more and more load.
- 1:26:38Over time, but yeah, things certainly feel better week on
- 1:26:40week, which is really nice. So should be, should be very
- 1:26:43grateful for that. Did a little bit of elliptical,
- 1:26:462 gym sessions and yeah onwards and upwards hopefully.
- 1:26:51How do you? Well, a couple.
- 1:26:53Of things, first one, how do you transition from where you are
- 1:26:56now say like 90 odd K is worth a jog and to put in some the first
- 1:27:02bits of threshold back in like does that happen next week or do
- 1:27:05you need to do like 3 or 4 more of these weeks?
- 1:27:11I think in terms of. Handover.
- 1:27:12I think I'll go from physio to rough shortly.
- 1:27:16I think it's a little bit trial and error to be honest.
- 1:27:18I don't think it's my understanding is the discomfort
- 1:27:22where I've got it is is in a joint and as I move quicker the
- 1:27:26joint becomes more and more sensitive to the movement.
- 1:27:30So if it's not as sensitive, then I can probably load it up a
- 1:27:35little bit more like I've got a scan just as a precaution booked
- 1:27:39in for end of Jan just to make sure I'm not creating anything,
- 1:27:43any doing any damage to myself. But what I'm finding now is
- 1:27:48probably jogging or steady running doesn't create
- 1:27:52discomfort. It's more just as I'm trying to
- 1:27:54move quickly. So just means I have to be a
- 1:27:57little bit slow in terms of introducing intensity, I think.
- 1:28:00So I just need to be careful. And I, I actually think I can
- 1:28:03get quite fit from just amassing some, some mileage without
- 1:28:08trying to stir it up by running too quickly.
- 1:28:10So I think that's probably what we'll do in the first instance.
- 1:28:15So maybe some steady running one day, some bike intervals another
- 1:28:19day. That's to keep that long ride
- 1:28:21like I can still get my heart rate up without trying to run
- 1:28:25too quick. I.
- 1:28:26Think will be the plan. But all to be unpacked as a
- 1:28:30based on symptoms and how I'm going over the next month, I
- 1:28:34suppose, yeah. Good, sensible as well.
- 1:28:38Second thing being on Tuesday at the track there where on came
- 1:28:43down, didn't they? And like was part of I think the
- 1:28:46running center brought them down.
- 1:28:48So it was cool to see Ben again. And he brought with him Jesse
- 1:28:53Hunt. And that was Luke Shaw wasn't
- 1:28:55part of like Ben and on, was he? He was just kind of the ex.
- 1:28:59He was in town for Christmas. Yeah.
- 1:29:02So, Luke. 'S I think moved to Melbourne,
- 1:29:05but he yeah, yeah, I like a lot of the guys.
- 1:29:08You see them all come in for, back home for, for, for
- 1:29:11Christmas. So he just came down and did the
- 1:29:13workout with us because it would make sense to look around and
- 1:29:17Jesse and yeah, you would have been, you'd have loved that one.
- 1:29:21Owen So there was a group of Jesse Hunt this Luke Shaw,
- 1:29:27Kieran and Crossy. We're all doing the like
- 1:29:30traditional track workout together.
- 1:29:32And Tom Moorcroft was just drugged jogging around the
- 1:29:35outside and he was spewing because I think he was like
- 1:29:37tired or I'll or something. He was like, oh, like the one
- 1:29:41time that like the the big fellas are in town, they have to
- 1:29:44sit it out. Did you just try on some of the
- 1:29:49spikes? Or no, but they had I wanted to.
- 1:29:54Yeah, now there for testing, but it's been good actually, the
- 1:29:59running centre have been doing quite a few different are they
- 1:30:01called activations or whatever the, you know just where they
- 1:30:05like collabs for different running brands and they bring
- 1:30:07all the wear testing. They bring all the shoes down,
- 1:30:09which is which is fun. Like they did one the other
- 1:30:12night with our six and I tried on the mega Blast, which are a
- 1:30:15fun shoe. I still think I'd prefer the
- 1:30:17Super Blast myself, but I could see why people are getting
- 1:30:19excited for them. And yeah, they had a a heap of
- 1:30:23what do they have probably four or five different of the on
- 1:30:26shoes to to try on. Yeah.
- 1:30:30Do you know much? About them though, and they've,
- 1:30:32they've got like the, the spikes.
- 1:30:34The one thing I noticed about them, the foam, it almost looks
- 1:30:38like a training shoe. There's like I don't know how
- 1:30:40many miles of foam in it must be up to the legal limit, but the
- 1:30:44guy was saying they've deliberately focused it like the
- 1:30:48the longer end of middle distance.
- 1:30:50They're they're like not a Sprint and spike.
- 1:30:52So it should be more comfortable for your calves rather than
- 1:30:55getting absolutely smashed. Though.
- 1:30:57I don't know what the feedback was from the people who tried
- 1:30:59them on, but they looked good it looked like.
- 1:31:03Such a good like event of the track.
- 1:31:04With all the shoes, like it's sort of like a dream to try on
- 1:31:07all shoes for free and like the spikes.
- 1:31:09Yeah, yeah, I miss it. Yeah, it's well done.
- 1:31:13They're doing a good job. With that sort of stuff.
- 1:31:16Particularly when you're spending so much money.
- 1:31:18On a new pair of shoes and like we've said prior, you don't know
- 1:31:22whether the release it's all just marks in hype or the hype
- 1:31:27is real and it's a genuinely good product.
- 1:31:29So to be able to put it on your 4th and form an opinion before
- 1:31:32you part with any cash, it's very good.
- 1:31:37Like, do you remember that Peg? Premium MM hmm, that would it's.
- 1:31:41Got the air bubble the whole way through the.
- 1:31:43Shoe like I remember moves trying to sell people that like
- 1:31:46I guarantee you that shoe is fucking shit.
- 1:31:49It looks like an absolute block. There's way, way, way better
- 1:31:52shoes out there. But it's yeah, just trying to
- 1:31:55push it because it's like like that's a daily trainer.
- 1:31:57It's like, I think it's like 2 hundred 180 yard euro, like
- 1:32:02whenever Romero or just a normal peg is going to be a better
- 1:32:05shoe. No, it's stupid.
- 1:32:08Like that's the thing. That's.
- 1:32:09Why I hate with this social media people trying to say
- 1:32:12anything. And that's where, yeah, credit
- 1:32:14to these brands. That that bring their false, you
- 1:32:16know, bag of tricks down and let you put them on because then you
- 1:32:19can really decide if you want to fork out the money.
- 1:32:22Like I've got quite a few mates that have more recently got into
- 1:32:26running and I've been for a long time advocating.
- 1:32:29I'm like, if you want a fun shoe, get a pair of super glass.
- 1:32:33Like you won't regret paying the extra 100 bucks.
- 1:32:35It's a lot of fun and like they eventually do, but it takes some
- 1:32:39convincing. Whereas like if you actually got
- 1:32:41to try on these shoes, you'd find the right shoe for you, you
- 1:32:45know, within a few. Runs and then you're sort.
- 1:32:47Of, you know, that's how you build a relationship with the
- 1:32:50brand as a consumer. I think so.
- 1:32:54It's funny we speak about this because.
- 1:32:56I'm actually in the market for a new pair of shoes given that I'm
- 1:32:59actually able to produce a few kilometers now and I was
- 1:33:02wondering where to invest my hard earned cash.
- 1:33:06I think Super Blast might be the place to go, but given my Nike
- 1:33:10fanboy heritage I was also looking at the Vomero Plus.
- 1:33:15I'm wondering is the premium on market yet Owen?
- 1:33:21I wouldn't, the premium has got the two airbags.
- 1:33:23One in the soil and one that like, I think that that's so
- 1:33:25very unstable. Apparently.
- 1:33:27I think just a traditional Romero, like he's got a nice
- 1:33:29heel drop. He'll have your Achilles a lot.
- 1:33:32I tried on the Romero Plus and I feel like that's very similar to
- 1:33:36my umm, Puma mag Mac Mag Max umm, it's super poppy, so it's
- 1:33:44super soft and comfy. It's not like too unstably soft,
- 1:33:48but yeah, I put my foot in and I was super impressed.
- 1:33:51It felt really good. But if you want to get moving,
- 1:33:53it'd be easier to get the Romero because it's more, it's more
- 1:33:58stable and yeah, it's just an all around.
- 1:34:00I love that you thought stable with a bit of.
- 1:34:03Drop and still a little bit Poppy would be the the shoe you
- 1:34:06want. OK.
- 1:34:10Yeah, potentially. At this stage.
- 1:34:12Something to not get me moving as well with how, given that I
- 1:34:16need to be sensible for a while, but then I am going to be making
- 1:34:20the transition at some point hopefully, so it's not just a
- 1:34:23shoe for a couple of weeks. Yeah, so.
- 1:34:26Ghosted. I was actually in.
- 1:34:31I went to DFO. Yesterday and Adidas was fucking
- 1:34:34turned upside down with the sales.
- 1:34:36Like shit was everywhere. He couldn't make head nor tail
- 1:34:40of it so. Walked out empty handed.
- 1:34:45So not worth not. Worth driving out?
- 1:34:47There for not right now, although there.
- 1:34:50Are there is? A new ASIC shop there, but they
- 1:34:53didn't have any of the good range in there with it being
- 1:34:55DFO. They're all like Joel Nimbus and
- 1:34:59all these mad words which you don't have spoken of in the the
- 1:35:03top tier running circles. And there's a new Hawker shop
- 1:35:09there I think as well. So there's now Brooks, Adidas,
- 1:35:13ASIC and and Hoka Hoka. We just need the Nike to rival
- 1:35:17the the Melbourne DFO because that was good.
- 1:35:24And what about your running training?
- 1:35:26For me, yeah, I'd. Fit the first run I'd done was
- 1:35:29on Tuesday at the track with you so just.
- 1:35:33It was meant to be 10 minutes, 10 minutes, 5 minutes as a
- 1:35:37progression from 8 minutes the week prior.
- 1:35:40But if you remember, we were jogging around chatting and and
- 1:35:43kind of got mixed up stupidly as to how long we'd actually been
- 1:35:48running for. It was because I put my watch on
- 1:35:50track mode. So all the settings went right.
- 1:35:54I couldn't see my lap time and we got however many laps in.
- 1:35:57I was like, shit, how long we've been going for?
- 1:35:59It feels like we've at least done the 10 minutes now.
- 1:36:03So we stopped anyway, and it wasn't until I got home and
- 1:36:05seeing like the actual thing in chorus and we'd done 10 minutes
- 1:36:09and 13 minutes. So yeah, but naughty of me,
- 1:36:13really. And the hill actually felt OK on
- 1:36:16Wednesday. Christmas Day was Thursday, and
- 1:36:19on Thursday evening it felt a little bit niggly.
- 1:36:23But I think that was because on Christmas Day I walked about 3K
- 1:36:27in these shitty pair of sandals like tracing paper.
- 1:36:32Thin so. I was quite annoyed with myself
- 1:36:35on Thursday evening thinking fuck I hope I'm like taking a
- 1:36:38step backwards, but it turned. Around pretty quick.
- 1:36:42The thing what was niggling me is this glute, one of my, my
- 1:36:47right glute has been absolutely locked door.
- 1:36:49And the only way I can describe it is I feel like it's
- 1:36:52definitely muscular and I'm not concerned about an injury.
- 1:36:55It's just like uncomfortable and I'm conscious not to run because
- 1:36:59I don't want to make it a tear. I feel like someone needs to
- 1:37:01take an like a hammer and chisel into my glute and just knock it
- 1:37:07out just to disperse all this tightness.
- 1:37:10So they'd actually jump on the table on Tuesday night at the
- 1:37:13track because front runner physio now bring a table down
- 1:37:17and there's one of the new guys there on on site to provide
- 1:37:20treatment, which is pretty like elite setup really if you think
- 1:37:23about it. Wait, wait, so on the.
- 1:37:27Tuesday night, they've a. Physio given massages, if you
- 1:37:31require treatment you can jump on the.
- 1:37:33Table. And yeah, that is crazy.
- 1:37:36God. Oh my God, where else would you
- 1:37:39get that? Where else would you get that?
- 1:37:41Nowhere. Ryan's on.
- 1:37:44That table every Tuesday. It's like it's forms perfect and
- 1:37:49he's like oh hold on mate, making money.
- 1:37:54You got to. Got to capitalize on the.
- 1:37:55Opportunity for a massage at any given moment, especially if it's
- 1:37:58not from an Asian lady. But yeah, then my glute was
- 1:38:06feeling a bit shit all week, so it didn't run.
- 1:38:09I should have had three or four runs like the every other day
- 1:38:12thing, but I didn't run until today when it felt a bit better.
- 1:38:15And it does feel a bit better now.
- 1:38:16And the good thing is the heels felt fine the whole time.
- 1:38:20So today I'd done 10 minutes, 10 minutes, 5 minutes.
- 1:38:23And now I'm at the point where I'm like, OK, I would be keen to
- 1:38:27start open this now, but obviously just need to stay
- 1:38:30relaxed and patient because allow it to come to me.
- 1:38:35Do you have one do? You know them little bands you
- 1:38:38put around your knee or your ankles?
- 1:38:41Oh yeah. You should be really is.
- 1:38:43Doing like them glue. Activations because I'd say
- 1:38:45yours haven't been like well fair enough you activate them
- 1:38:48when you're cycling but not running wise in a while.
- 1:38:52So I feel like you should really be doing them before like your
- 1:38:55runs. It takes like 10-15 minutes and
- 1:38:57just to get them firing. I think that's I think I've
- 1:39:00caused it myself. And well, we can blame Dean
- 1:39:02because he dragged me to the gym and then made me put put weights
- 1:39:06on the bar. And I think I've done it through
- 1:39:09the deadline. It's part of your warm up.
- 1:39:11It's. Part of your warm up at the gym
- 1:39:13is glute activation. So you should do a series of
- 1:39:17glute activation. Some lunges like is it not?
- 1:39:23In your program. It might also be genuinely.
- 1:39:27Overtraining on the bike, I don't feel it whilst I'm riding,
- 1:39:30but I think a lot of your power comes through your glutes,
- 1:39:32doesn't it? And this week I've done 390K on
- 1:39:37the bike. That's a good.
- 1:39:41It's a good. It's a good weight, yeah.
- 1:39:47In terms of hours of activity, you're the winner.
- 1:39:52Run for the weight 12 something I think.
- 1:39:57Oh no, that's just on the bike. Yes, it probably doesn't go up
- 1:40:00much. Maybe 13 a Christmas Day I got.
- 1:40:07An 800. Meter ocean swimming, we can add
- 1:40:09that to it as well. Every little helps.
- 1:40:16It's good. So yeah, head down and just
- 1:40:20crack on with the goal to be back doing uninterrupted 30
- 1:40:24minute plus, hopefully soon trending in the right direction.
- 1:40:30I guess that leads us well into a look ahead into 2026.
- 1:40:35Well, a look back into 2025 in terms of how the year has been,
- 1:40:39what went well, what didn't go so well from a running
- 1:40:42perspective or personal, if you like.
- 1:40:44And then we can look at some goals for 2026 without
- 1:40:48potentially setting ourselves up to fail and committing to
- 1:40:51anything time bound on a podcast.
- 1:40:54But you can if you. Want who's?
- 1:40:57Going to start us off with reflections on 2025.
- 1:41:11Yeah, doing well. 2025 Reflections.
- 1:41:18I don't know what a bit of a tale of two halves for me.
- 1:41:21So first half was good. Ran PVS over 5 and 10K.
- 1:41:27Probably should have run APB in the half and didn't, but happy
- 1:41:33with the fact that I was able to lift my ceiling.
- 1:41:36Like if I rewind a. Couple of years ago.
- 1:41:40So 2023 I did I think maybe 4 marathons and a 50K race in that
- 1:41:44year and I was getting more and more efficient at the marathon.
- 1:41:47But you can only keep doing that so many times before you need to
- 1:41:50go back to trying to lift your threshold or lift your ceiling
- 1:41:53if you want to run a faster marathon.
- 1:41:55And the back end of 2024 and into the first part of 2025,
- 1:41:58which is when we all started training together, I was able to
- 1:42:03get quicker over 5 and 10K and I think as well at my threshold of
- 1:42:081/2 marathon. So really happy to have done
- 1:42:10that. Yeah, happy with a lot of my
- 1:42:15year. Had a decent 50K in amongst all
- 1:42:18that. And then yeah, was injured.
- 1:42:21So dealing with the first major injury that I've had to has been
- 1:42:29useful in terms of. Being able to connect with.
- 1:42:31Family and not be completely buggered or tired as much.
- 1:42:35It's quite pleasant but at the same time would love to be fit
- 1:42:39and help fit and doing full training weeks so hoping to get
- 1:42:42back to that and very soon. Would you be able to pick a
- 1:42:47favorite? Moment of 2025 from a running
- 1:42:50perspective, your your best achievement or anything along
- 1:42:53those lines. He was just asking if we.
- 1:42:56Like a. Best moment for 2025.
- 1:43:01I remember so that 5K we did Owen, you know the I ran 1420
- 1:43:09there. I think I've run like 1428 like
- 1:43:133 or 4 times over the past maybe four years.
- 1:43:16So to finally run a PB at 5K was a highlight like I was.
- 1:43:20I was stoked after that race that I've finally cracked a PB
- 1:43:23like I've run a a heap of times between 28 and 301428 and 1432.
- 1:43:29So to run a PB I was wrapped with and then the bridges I was
- 1:43:34wrapped with that as well as this very small PB.
- 1:43:37But it was I put in a good block of training sort of after doing
- 1:43:42that 5K10K running to get fit for a marathon and that was a
- 1:43:46reflection of some very good fitness as well.
- 1:43:48So I was happy with that too. That were probably my 2
- 1:43:51highlights. And regarding obviously the.
- 1:43:55Lobby and like the injury and stuff besides trying not to get
- 1:44:00re injured in 2026 any like major learns that you've taken
- 1:44:03from the injury. The strength stuff perhaps?
- 1:44:13Yeah, that's probably a great chat.
- 1:44:15Yeah, that's right. I think, yeah, exactly.
- 1:44:18You're not better than me, but I would think, yeah, that I've not
- 1:44:23paid as much attention to SNC as what I have now.
- 1:44:27And I'm enjoying it and I'm I know I need to keep doing it
- 1:44:33more and can keep getting better at it.
- 1:44:35So certainly continuing to get. More and more curious.
- 1:44:39With strength stuff and incorporating more of it, like
- 1:44:41even when I was talking about like glute activations, like
- 1:44:44just even there, like I'm doing some hip activations and all
- 1:44:47that sort of stuff now that I never used to do.
- 1:44:50I just used to not care to do any of it.
- 1:44:52Whereas at least I'm now starting to do some of it.
- 1:44:54So more of that in 20. 26 for sure.
- 1:45:01Right then, Owen, you've. Had an up and down year yourself
- 1:45:04but maybe flipped on its head so how does yours stuff up yeah so
- 1:45:10it. Wasn't up and down year.
- 1:45:11Like started off the whole build for that marigami half was
- 1:45:16probably it's probably the best couple of months of my life.
- 1:45:18Like what you guys running wise? It was just it was a dream.
- 1:45:22We had such a good thing going and then the five KPB like that
- 1:45:26night at the track, it was, it was genuine.
- 1:45:28It was so good. I was shocked why I ran 1433 as
- 1:45:31a big PB for me. So yeah.
- 1:45:35And then the going home obviously was a was a big
- 1:45:40decision, like a big change. And I was obviously nervous
- 1:45:45about the running back home and all because I obviously had the
- 1:45:48big group with you guys. So I do a lot of it so long now,
- 1:45:52but I'm sort of mixing in with other groups or going from going
- 1:45:56on runs with lads now. So I'm getting my the fun of my
- 1:45:59feet here. And obviously coming home
- 1:46:02injured as well was pretty hard. But I feel like like injury
- 1:46:08isn't that like you're going to get injured, It's just how you
- 1:46:11how you come back from a like 99% of the time you're going to
- 1:46:14come back stronger depending on injury.
- 1:46:16But yeah, they're really inevitable.
- 1:46:18You just need a obviously consistently is the net
- 1:46:20consistency is the name of the game, which like the last couple
- 1:46:25of months I've been able to just bank consistently.
- 1:46:27Like I think for the last seven months I've been pretty
- 1:46:29consistent touch wood. But yeah, and then come home run
- 1:46:35nationals was a big goal for me. The 5K and like to be on the
- 1:46:40start line were like Andrew from G Day, Brian Fay, like Cormac
- 1:46:46Dolphin. It was a bit, it was a sort of a
- 1:46:47surreal moment. Like it was such a stacked field
- 1:46:50and. Then yeah, Cross.
- 1:46:53Was another highlight for me to even though I mess it up with
- 1:46:56the Namio, which didn't have my performance and I still feel
- 1:47:01like I have closed like I know I am still so so, so far away, but
- 1:47:08I have closed the gap a little bit and, and with the shape I'm
- 1:47:13in now and like the first two races of 2026 being Valencia 10K
- 1:47:19and RMR 5K, they're two really, really big opportunities to take
- 1:47:26another bit of time off my PBS. So like that's super exciting,
- 1:47:31but like I really it's just trying to stay healthy.
- 1:47:35Like as runners, we're running that red line, We're running so
- 1:47:38close to that red line. And if you don't do your
- 1:47:42activations, if you don't feel enough, if you don't sleep, you
- 1:47:45just cross that red line. And yeah, we all know what
- 1:47:48happens when we cross the red line.
- 1:47:50So yeah, very up and down year. But the moment I'm on the up and
- 1:47:54I'm going to try and keep going up.
- 1:47:58So yeah. And obviously this doesn't
- 1:48:00happen without like friends, family, like my physio, my
- 1:48:04coach, like running people think as an individual sport, it's so
- 1:48:08not there is a massive team behind anyone.
- 1:48:12So yeah, I like at the moment I'm in a super privileged
- 1:48:16position where I'm get looked after physio wise.
- 1:48:19Like I come home from a run and my girlfriend has like dinner on
- 1:48:22the table for me. Like I'm, I'm pampered, I'm
- 1:48:27Molly coddled like so. And I feel like I am seeing the
- 1:48:31benefits of it. I just need to stick it at it
- 1:48:33for another like 2 years and then I might be somewhere like
- 1:48:38better obviously. But I am yeah, it's super up and
- 1:48:42down here. But hopefully 2026 will be will
- 1:48:45be another good one. Very good and from.
- 1:48:51The down perspectives in like when you're injured or maybe
- 1:48:56when you moved home and you have to change your environment and
- 1:48:58adapt to training by yourself and stuff any, any major lens
- 1:49:02that you you want to carry through to 2026 besides just
- 1:49:05keep doing what you're doing now.
- 1:49:09Like the the injury, obviously everyone takes.
- 1:49:12Something from an injury, like you get injured for a reason.
- 1:49:15So it's up to you to find that reason and just fix it.
- 1:49:20And, and getting injured is your body telling you like it's your
- 1:49:26body telling you, unless like like Callum Nelson for an for
- 1:49:29instance, like he actually got like someone actually sliced his
- 1:49:32Achilles in half. So that was really bad luck.
- 1:49:35But normally it's your own doing.
- 1:49:37Like you push too hard. So it's like finding that
- 1:49:40balance. And like, I know it's very
- 1:49:44popular for people to just stack big week, big week, big week,
- 1:49:47big week, big week. And like their Strava bears are
- 1:49:49all high. Whereas for me, I can't do that.
- 1:49:53I need a down week every like 3-4 weeks.
- 1:49:55So I've learned that. And obviously, like it's handy
- 1:49:58when you have a coach with such a personalized approach that,
- 1:50:02umm, like he could tell last week that I was going to be a
- 1:50:04little bit cooked on the Monday, Tuesday.
- 1:50:06So he knew to give me a call and see who I was and then he could
- 1:50:08just pull it straight back. Umm, So yeah, you're, you're
- 1:50:14like, you learn so much from injuries.
- 1:50:15So I know they're shit. And when it happens, you're
- 1:50:18like, Oh my God, I'm never going to get back to where I was.
- 1:50:20But I guarantee you, you guys, you'll come back stronger than
- 1:50:25ever. So it's just like sitting back,
- 1:50:28looking at the bigger picture and just moving forward.
- 1:50:34OK. Thank you very much for the.
- 1:50:36Inspiration very well timed heading into the new year.
- 1:50:41And you're definitely starting it on the right foot.
- 1:50:43So excited to see what those is armour in January as well as
- 1:50:47that in Feb our MAS a month after.
- 1:50:50Valencia so our mas like the 12th of February.
- 1:50:58Sweet, so exciting starts. 2026 nevertheless, I guess for.
- 1:51:04Me. I mean.
- 1:51:07The main win is. I mean, obviously you can attach
- 1:51:12yourself to time goals like the half marathon and stuff, but I
- 1:51:16think from that period of six months where we're training so
- 1:51:20well and stuff there it was more so like a, you know, when you
- 1:51:24have those moments where you get like a, a genuine mindset shift
- 1:51:27where you realize like sort of what you are capable of.
- 1:51:31And it's not just like of I've ran APB of 10 seconds, 15
- 1:51:34seconds. It's more so like, shit, I've
- 1:51:37run this PB now, but I now I'm aware of maybe what I can run in
- 1:51:41months and years to come. So it's like the change, the
- 1:51:45shift in realization there of like just continuing to like be
- 1:51:48motivated and the drive to want to get better.
- 1:51:52And I guess that's what I'm maybe most proud of, having gone
- 1:51:56through six months of shite with the injury, somehow managing to
- 1:52:02stay somewhat in the game and staying fit and not putting a
- 1:52:06shit load of weight on. Maybe my focus on the rehab
- 1:52:10hasn't always been entirely there.
- 1:52:12And I could have been 100% focused a little bit more with
- 1:52:15doing some strength earlier and a few more of the rehab
- 1:52:20exercises. But I think I finally turned the
- 1:52:23corner and probably the lens from it would be, I can now.
- 1:52:31Once you kind of step out of a situation like say when you're
- 1:52:35in high volume training, you're under fatigue and you're like
- 1:52:39you're working towards an end goal, which is a race and always
- 1:52:42you're thinking about is or in a couple of weeks I've got that
- 1:52:44taper. So for now, I'm just like going
- 1:52:47to absolutely bury myself from doing every single double.
- 1:52:50I'm not missing a session. I'm doing every Rep in the
- 1:52:52session. But then now because I'm so far
- 1:52:55detached from that, I can think about it more objectively and
- 1:53:00I'm going to try and tell myself that like every single double
- 1:53:04doesn't need to be done. Like potentially it might be a
- 1:53:08worse decision to do the double rather than not to do the
- 1:53:11double. And especially through all the
- 1:53:13cycling, I'm going to want to try and keep some of that in for
- 1:53:17the double S and stuff. So just to be maybe more smarter
- 1:53:21with the approach rather than almost getting transactional
- 1:53:24with the running and like just looking at the plan, doing what
- 1:53:27it says next day, wake up tired, do what it says regardless.
- 1:53:31Like just be a bit more self aware in the moment rather than
- 1:53:35having the injury to come to you and tell you hey look you should
- 1:53:38have realised this a couple of weeks ago and main goal for next
- 1:53:43year would just be to stay injury free.
- 1:53:47And. Yeah, make sensible.
- 1:53:50Decisions, whatever they. May be hopefully I'll be able to
- 1:53:52run some PBS and stuff along the way.
- 1:53:54But yeah, just don't get carried away being an idiot and forget
- 1:53:57about everything I've learned in the past six months.
- 1:54:10And any highlights 2025? Highlights would.
- 1:54:14Definitely be getting. Involved with the front runner
- 1:54:17group and like making so many running friends from it and also
- 1:54:21experiencing what it's like to train as part of a group.
- 1:54:24And because it sounds weird, I am like still somewhat new to
- 1:54:28running. Like before joining front runner
- 1:54:32meeting you lot, I'd done almost all of my training by myself and
- 1:54:36was perhaps even still figuring it out and understanding what
- 1:54:40like actual running training looks like.
- 1:54:43So highlight would be just like kind of getting in the deep end
- 1:54:47and experiencing it for what it is.
- 1:54:50And then obviously like travelling internationally to
- 1:54:52Japan and racing. It's like such a cool experience
- 1:54:56and it motivates me to want to continue to race overseas or
- 1:55:02domestically Interstate. And the answer.
- 1:55:07You understand? That's a personal highlight
- 1:55:11separate from running. Those details cannot be
- 1:55:16revealed. With them?
- 1:55:19With your step future stepfather perhaps?
- 1:55:25From a poke. I was thinking about from a.
- 1:55:27Podcast perspective from easy double those collectively the
- 1:55:30winners that were still here, but the winners that we started
- 1:55:34and that we're still here it's it's been a whirlwind year like
- 1:55:39to think that if we had doing these reflections 12 months ago
- 1:55:44the we would have just been doing it in a coffee shop
- 1:55:46because this platform wouldn't have existed is kind of bizarre
- 1:55:51and then the kind of like wins along the way are the fact that
- 1:55:54we've been able to interview such amazing athletes and also
- 1:55:58the fact that we've created. Not created but.
- 1:56:02We've managed to bring along such a like engaged and
- 1:56:07knowledgeable audience. So like, I greatly appreciate
- 1:56:09the fact that people are tuning in every week and they're
- 1:56:12actually engaging and letting us know their thoughts and
- 1:56:15opinions. Like it wouldn't be what it is
- 1:56:17without people obviously listening, but also like being
- 1:56:20involved as well. You both agree any other wins
- 1:56:34for the? Podcast or leave it there.
- 1:56:39I think it's still going. Like they went to work that goes
- 1:56:43into like get in a time that suits us or like the fact that
- 1:56:48it's still going is yeah, it's it's it's pretty, it's pretty
- 1:56:52good going. Like there's an 8 hour time
- 1:56:55difference between US2. We've seen us straight.
- 1:56:57So like, it is a bit of work goes into these recordings, but
- 1:57:02the fact that people are listening and like, who would it
- 1:57:06take? The people we've interviewed,
- 1:57:07like the insight we get into these, like we learned so much
- 1:57:10from all these people. So yeah, yeah, it's just super,
- 1:57:13super cool. And I guarantee I probably
- 1:57:15wouldn't be, I love you guys, but I, I'm not the best to keep
- 1:57:19in contact with people. So without this, I don't know if
- 1:57:22I'd be talking to you guys still.
- 1:57:24So no, no, it's really, really good.
- 1:57:26I actually, I look forward to the recordings every time.
- 1:57:29So yeah, onwards and upwards for 2026.
- 1:57:34Yeah, it can be a bit daunting revealing all.
- 1:57:37And like just coming on and maybe if you don't think about
- 1:57:39what you're going to say and you, you might potentially speak
- 1:57:42about something which like otherwise you wouldn't,
- 1:57:45especially on a public platform. But the fact that everyone is so
- 1:57:48kind of supportive is nice. And I think also the, the
- 1:57:55biggest value that comes from the podcast is like the network
- 1:57:58that you create and not only the network that we create for
- 1:58:00ourselves, but like listeners are very much a part of that.
- 1:58:04So like you can kind of put people in touch with people.
- 1:58:07And the fact that someone might be a listener in the UK and
- 1:58:10Ireland, like they then can connect because they can relate
- 1:58:13to the podcast. Like it's quite bizarre.
- 1:58:16And I'm very excited for us to do next year, hopefully.
- 1:58:23I think the a win for me has just.
- 1:58:25Been getting excited about in and around athletics and
- 1:58:29following it a bit more closely. Like I was a little bit, I could
- 1:58:34follow Aussie athletics but I didn't follow Irish and UK
- 1:58:37Athletics as much and even the American scene.
- 1:58:39Like just connecting the dots because we need to come on here
- 1:58:42and share a view on who we think is going to do what.
- 1:58:47Like, I think a highlight was some of the what following the
- 1:58:52Tokyo World Championships and following a lot of those races,
- 1:58:56some financial highlights as well as just, you know,
- 1:58:59memorable highlights with some of those finals and those
- 1:59:03results. It was just made a lot of fun
- 1:59:06and even like. Commenting on these.
- 1:59:08Predictions and what's you know, what's happened and, and being
- 1:59:11across it and being allowed to share a view on it with people
- 1:59:15has been a lot of fun. Yeah, to your point there,
- 1:59:20there's I've heard. Many a time since that, no one
- 1:59:23tipped Jimmy Grassier, but inside the Easy Double community
- 1:59:29would suggest otherwise. But we'll, we'll leave it there.
- 1:59:36Losses. It's important to acknowledge
- 1:59:39where you made mistakes and where you went wrong.
- 1:59:41I think the clubhouse didn't go as I hoped.
- 1:59:45Well, I mean, it did at first. We had great engagement and and
- 1:59:48stuff and the world champs kind of fueled that and everyone was
- 1:59:51fired up. But then naturally, like the
- 1:59:57enthusiasm just wasn't there anymore.
- 2:00:00So you got to say it how it is and pull the plug on these
- 2:00:03things. But hopefully we can we can turn
- 2:00:07that into something more beneficial for listeners in the
- 2:00:09future. Where?
- 2:00:11Where there is appetite, because I'm sure there is, and the
- 2:00:15engagement that we get. Through the episodes and.
- 2:00:17Stuff we want to kind of build around that.
- 2:00:19So yeah, Clubhouse. Unfortunately you were left in
- 2:00:232025, but we tried. That's what matters.
- 2:00:28God loves. To try to win some, to lose
- 2:00:30some. We.
- 2:00:33Have to lose some to win some, hopefully.
- 2:00:35Yeah. Yeah, it's still thinking about
- 2:00:39yesterday. I don't win very often, does
- 2:00:50anyone want to? Close out on a bloody negative
- 2:00:53of a Double Trouble or are we ending on a high?
- 2:00:56What do you think we should end? On a high, we've had a lot of
- 2:01:02double troubles this year. Sounds good and.
- 2:01:05If you're lacking motivation going into 2026, just remember
- 2:01:08that million, $10 million reel. If what we spoke about last week
- 2:01:15you'll you'll get fired though, Say it again.
- 2:01:19Ryan for everyone. So if I gave you. $10 million
- 2:01:23right now would. You take it.
- 2:01:28I think I would. Not again.
- 2:01:30All right. It's it's.
- 2:01:31Been a good episode. We'll leave it there.
- 2:01:38Thanks everyone so much for this.
- 2:01:39Year, happy new year. Wish you all state injury free
- 2:01:44and run lots of PBS in 2026 and we'll see you on the other side.
- 2:01:50See you guys. Happy New Year.
