- 0:40Speaker 3: Steve had a little incident today with Chase.
- 0:46Speaker 2: Got machine has been we should we should get going anyway.
- 0:51Speaker 2: Steve driving incident today.
- 0:54Speaker 1: Little always point out at that place. I tell my
- 0:57Speaker 1: kids someone's gonna die here.
- 1:00Speaker 2: Well, you've out did from road rage another guy.
- 1:04Speaker 1: You know what, I know he got another altercation.
- 1:08Speaker 2: I'll be honest. Your your compadres here made it seem
- 1:12Speaker 2: a lot worse than I was expecting me. I saw
- 1:14Speaker 2: like eighty on the on the pedometer. They were saying
- 1:17Speaker 2: like sixty five max. That's all we were going to
- 1:20Speaker 2: get out of here today. That's not what I said.
- 1:22Speaker 2: If you want, if you go name names, I'm just saying.
- 1:26Speaker 1: If you're Livingston, Montana and you're trying to get uh,
- 1:30Speaker 1: westbound on I ninety at the main Livingstone thing. There's
- 1:35Speaker 1: an entrance there that it's like the engineer that designed
- 1:38Speaker 1: it should be shot run over on that. It is
- 1:43Speaker 1: the worst highway.
- 1:45Speaker 2: Yeah, it's not. It's questionable.
- 1:47Speaker 1: No, And I always tell my kids, like, someone's gonna
- 1:48Speaker 1: get killed at this entrance. You like, there's no like,
- 1:54Speaker 1: you're just there, You're just on the highway.
- 1:57Speaker 2: I start sweating every time I get on the free one.
- 2:00Speaker 2: Say I'm on your side, Steve.
- 2:01Speaker 1: You can't. It's the runway is so short. You like,
- 2:05Speaker 1: you do the little loop and all of a sudden
- 2:07Speaker 1: there you are, and like dudes that don't get over.
- 2:11Speaker 1: It's not like you can stop and then wait a
- 2:13Speaker 1: while and then merge out later. You have to just
- 2:16Speaker 1: go and they have to let you in.
- 2:20Speaker 2: This guy didn't want to let you in.
- 2:21Speaker 1: No, And then he wanted to have a little conniption
- 2:24Speaker 1: hawk in his heart. And I noticed he got new
- 2:26Speaker 1: an altercation. I was in my in my rear side
- 2:29Speaker 1: view mirror. I watched him having like a little blinker
- 2:32Speaker 1: war with another guy.
- 2:35Speaker 2: He was having a bad days. Just one of those guys,
- 2:37Speaker 2: you know, he's one of those guys.
- 2:39Speaker 1: I think that like. I liked it. I mean, I'm
- 2:42Speaker 1: entering the highway, get let me in. Yeah, and if
- 2:45Speaker 1: you want to not.
- 2:46Speaker 4: Do that, But how would you rate your own driving
- 2:50Speaker 4: in general?
- 2:51Speaker 2: I don't need to rate it.
- 2:52Speaker 1: I have the stats to back it up.
- 2:54Speaker 2: What stats like?
- 2:57Speaker 1: I told my first car on a two track on
- 3:00Speaker 1: a two track, crashed tree, trying to open the trying
- 3:05Speaker 1: you know the little the windows in the back trucks
- 3:08Speaker 1: used to have, trying to hand a beer through to
- 3:10Speaker 1: a guy named Brian Peterson and hit an oak tree
- 3:16Speaker 1: on a logging.
- 3:16Speaker 2: Road and they were in the bed.
- 3:20Speaker 1: They were in the bed of the truck. They all
- 3:22Speaker 1: got lunch, but that was one of the worst thing.
- 3:25Speaker 1: So I bought that truck for six hundred dollars. Was
- 3:28Speaker 1: on the corner of Russell and Riley Thompson, Dalton Township, Michigan,
- 3:32Speaker 1: seventy nine. Chev Mm hmmm two will drive Blue Chevy.
- 3:37Speaker 2: Hey, we're all bout some team Chevy.
- 3:39Speaker 1: That's the voice to Chase. When I get to reading
- 3:42Speaker 1: you about how credential Chase Elliott is is a NASCAR driver,
- 3:46Speaker 1: You're gonna blow your mind.
- 3:48Speaker 2: The back.
- 3:49Speaker 1: I'm talking to the listener. You won't believe it. How
- 3:53Speaker 1: credential this gentleman is that race car driving?
- 3:56Speaker 2: You might? You might not. Well we'll find out. Stay tuned.
- 4:04Speaker 1: I'll have to wait and see. What was I getting at?
- 4:07Speaker 1: Oh that truck truck? Yeah, so was at the corner
- 4:11Speaker 1: of Russell and Riley Thompson. Six hundred bucks, stick shift
- 4:15Speaker 1: mm hmm, short box, short ish, but we didn't have
- 4:18Speaker 1: an eight foot box on, which is a bummer. My
- 4:20Speaker 1: next truck did, which was three hundred dollars. Anyways, regular cab,
- 4:23Speaker 1: short of mileage, regular cab. What's up?
- 4:27Speaker 2: What was the mileage?
- 4:28Speaker 1: Hi?
- 4:29Speaker 2: I mean, I assume so for six hundred bucks, but
- 4:31Speaker 2: I just was curious.
- 4:32Speaker 1: It was, yeah, a long time ago. This would have
- 4:34Speaker 1: been and this would have been when I turned sixteen,
- 4:36Speaker 1: So it had been in nineteen eighty nineteen. No, no, no, no,
- 4:43Speaker 1: eighty six would have been nineteen ninety.
- 4:46Speaker 2: That wasn't that long ago. My first truck was a shortbed,
- 4:50Speaker 2: regular cab, Chevy eighty eight.
- 4:52Speaker 1: I didn't have this truck long anyway. Let me tell
- 4:54Speaker 1: you what happened. Yeah, no, Well, so I crashed it
- 4:57Speaker 1: into this oak tree and ash it all in. Matt Jones,
- 5:04Speaker 1: who was a total gearhead, like you know what you
- 5:06Speaker 1: had to do most likely to succeed. He was such
- 5:10Speaker 1: a gearhead. I voted for him, no one else did.
- 5:13Speaker 1: By sawing him like, I mean, he'll be successful at
- 5:16Speaker 1: fixing cars and all this stuff. He became like a
- 5:21Speaker 1: hydraulics mechanic. Anyhow, I sold it to him for one
- 5:25Speaker 1: so now and because he's such a gearhead. Two days later,
- 5:29Speaker 1: some bitch driving the truck round looked just like when
- 5:31Speaker 1: I had it before I crashed it. Yes, soared a
- 5:34Speaker 1: strong life.
- 5:35Speaker 3: The same thing happened with I blew my truck up
- 5:39Speaker 3: on the interstate driving to college. And when I was
- 5:43Speaker 3: back for Christmas this past year, I saw some dude
- 5:46Speaker 3: driving it around.
- 5:47Speaker 2: M hmm, really yeah, takes out fix it up?
- 5:51Speaker 4: Ye.
- 5:51Speaker 1: Then that, Then I bought another chev after that, Then
- 5:54Speaker 1: I bought another, Then I bought a another chev after that.
- 6:00Speaker 2: There you go, Team Chevy. Yeah, and there's a reason
- 6:03Speaker 2: you keep going back.
- 6:05Speaker 4: As you matured, your your level of driving improved beyond.
- 6:09Speaker 1: Oh point being so I that was the whole I've
- 6:13Speaker 1: never had. I've never had of trouble with the cops ever.
- 6:17Speaker 4: Oh that's good.
- 6:19Speaker 1: Never had like a moving violation nothing like that.
- 6:21Speaker 4: You don't speed.
- 6:22Speaker 2: You never got a speed ticket? Yeah, I mean you
- 6:25Speaker 2: get a ticket for the crash.
- 6:28Speaker 1: No, because that was off in the woods. I rolled.
- 6:32Speaker 1: I had a Conno Line van that I traded Ronnie Bain.
- 6:38Speaker 1: I traded him a husk bar in a two fifty
- 6:40Speaker 1: two chainsaw and I think two hundred and fifty bucks
- 6:44Speaker 1: for van. Rolled it on the ice. Destroyed that and
- 6:49Speaker 1: it don't had nothing bad has ever happened to me.
- 6:52Speaker 1: That's not something like like like facts speak for themselves.
- 6:55Speaker 1: I never even killed a deer. I hit one with
- 6:58Speaker 1: the side you mirror, but couldn't find it.
- 7:01Speaker 2: He made it, he might have killed one.
- 7:04Speaker 1: We looked all over. I thought for sure it'd be dead,
- 7:06Speaker 1: but we couldn't find it. Tried to trail it. So yeah,
- 7:10Speaker 1: I'm a good driver.
- 7:11Speaker 5: All crashes off road, none on road, none on right
- 7:14Speaker 5: A trey.
- 7:15Speaker 1: Off road like boskey, that's what we called it growing up.
- 7:18Speaker 2: My only speeding ticket was with you in your truck.
- 7:22Speaker 1: Remember that who was driving?
- 7:23Speaker 2: I was It was his speeding ticket in Wyoming.
- 7:28Speaker 4: I never forgot about that speed limit.
- 7:30Speaker 2: I was like, I hope this cop some young dude.
- 7:33Speaker 4: No.
- 7:33Speaker 3: Stephen Ranella I look in the mirror at some white
- 7:36Speaker 3: haired old dude had no clue.
- 7:40Speaker 2: Ninety bucks.
- 7:43Speaker 1: I've been let go. I've been let off on some tickets.
- 7:46Speaker 1: And I got a minor ticket not long ago. But
- 7:47Speaker 1: I was doing a good favor. Remember we did that
- 7:50Speaker 1: giveaway where we brought chainsaws to all the dudes that
- 7:53Speaker 1: enrolled Black Management. Yeah, well, I was dropping off my
- 7:55Speaker 1: chainsaw and got a speeding ticket, but he lowered it
- 7:58Speaker 1: down to like barely speeding and I could just take
- 8:01Speaker 1: care of it in the mail. No one time.
- 8:08Speaker 4: Speeding tickets, Yep, I got one, like, well, it was
- 8:12Speaker 4: a warning a couple of weeks ago. And then you
- 8:14Speaker 4: were I mean, you know what my record is when
- 8:17Speaker 4: I like drove, Oh yeah, you never drove d for
- 8:20Speaker 4: like four hours.
- 8:21Speaker 2: I still think about that Texas Texas.
- 8:25Speaker 1: She only yeah, like Krin hadn't driven for like eighty
- 8:28Speaker 1: years and then like drove a car for the first
- 8:30Speaker 1: time and only drove in the passing.
- 8:32Speaker 4: Lane between Waco and Austin. And you guys about ship yourself.
- 8:38Speaker 1: One time when I was working for Ronnie, same guy
- 8:41Speaker 1: got the Econo line van from He sends me out
- 8:45Speaker 1: with like a lot of these guys that worked for
- 8:48Speaker 1: Ronnie back in those days had felonies and couldn't drive,
- 8:52Speaker 1: So you guys had to drive because they had too
- 8:53Speaker 1: many DUIs to drive. Well, one day we're with a guy.
- 8:57Speaker 1: It was me, a dude named Scott and a dude
- 8:59Speaker 1: named Bill Dutch. And all I know is he just
- 9:03Speaker 1: started working for Ronnie. Okay, he just is a brand
- 9:05Speaker 1: new employee. All I know is his name's Bill. Okay.
- 9:11Speaker 1: All day everybody calls him Bill. This dude Scott's driving
- 9:15Speaker 1: Scott's get Because Scott gets pulled over for speeding. Cop
- 9:18Speaker 1: comes up. The cops can just smell a fish. He
- 9:22Speaker 1: has a turn to Bill Dutcher and something just speaks
- 9:25Speaker 1: to this cop. He says, what's your name? And all
- 9:28Speaker 1: of a sudden he's like Randy or some shit, you
- 9:34Speaker 1: know what I mean. And I'm like, wait a minute,
- 9:36Speaker 1: cause all day you've been Bill Dutcher, you know. So
- 9:39Speaker 1: he's like Randy, and then he goes, let me see
- 9:42Speaker 1: her idea. He just knows, he knows, and he's like,
- 9:46Speaker 1: I left it at home. So the cops like okay,
- 9:51Speaker 1: and he goes back to his cop car, you know,
- 9:53Speaker 1: and we're sitting there and then it's never good and
- 9:56Speaker 1: all sudden like he goes another cop car, cop car
- 10:00Speaker 1: in front of our cop in front of our car,
- 10:03Speaker 1: and they get out and tear I mean they tear
- 10:09Speaker 1: our work truck apart, my toolbox. They went through my toolbox.
- 10:16Speaker 1: I had a bottle of ibuprofen in my toolbox. They
- 10:19Speaker 1: went through the bottle of ibuprofene. Find Bill Dodgers driver.
- 10:25Speaker 1: Find Bill Dutcher's driver's license. Well, what did he do
- 10:29Speaker 1: which he didn't have?
- 10:33Speaker 2: What was up with this dude? Why why was he
- 10:35Speaker 2: so famous? They hauled him away and you never found
- 10:39Speaker 2: you never heard anything else about it.
- 10:40Speaker 1: I don't remember what his problem was. He had a warrant.
- 10:42Speaker 1: I don't know. It was just like he was a
- 10:44Speaker 1: short lived He had a short lived tenure. That was
- 10:49Speaker 1: his day.
- 10:50Speaker 2: You got any good speed tickets, Chase, I honestly don't.
- 10:55Speaker 2: Are you lead foot off the track or just.
- 10:57Speaker 1: He doesn't drive, He doesn't drive a road car run.
- 11:01Speaker 2: I don't know that surprised me. No, somebody's phones ring,
- 11:05Speaker 2: that's mine. That's pretty normal, Sam Bates.
- 11:11Speaker 1: We're just with her.
- 11:13Speaker 2: She knows we're recording the show.
- 11:14Speaker 1: Does care?
- 11:16Speaker 2: Sam uh No?
- 11:19Speaker 1: Last ticket.
- 11:20Speaker 2: I mean, I'll be honest, I've gotten a couple of warnings.
- 11:24Speaker 2: I've gotten off on a couple of tickets, for sure.
- 11:26Speaker 1: Did you tell them what I'm a race car driver.
- 11:28Speaker 2: No, that's the worst thing you can do.
- 11:30Speaker 1: Because I think he'd be like, well, you certainly know
- 11:32Speaker 1: what you're doing.
- 11:34Speaker 2: I'm exactly But unless.
- 11:36Speaker 4: It's like gosh, I just can't break the habit, you know, like.
- 11:39Speaker 2: I don't think that flies. No, I think I think
- 11:41Speaker 2: that immediately comes off as you're a smart ass and
- 11:44Speaker 2: you're either going to jail or instead of taking your
- 11:47Speaker 2: ticket down, we're gonna take it or take it up.
- 11:51Speaker 2: That does not work. But yeah, no, it's been a bit.
- 11:55Speaker 2: It's been a bit, and I'm a slow driver on
- 11:58Speaker 2: the roads, I really am, except.
- 12:00Speaker 5: Leaving the race track. The race track, when you leave
- 12:02Speaker 5: it's a race to the airport.
- 12:04Speaker 1: Oh can you introduce yourself with Yeah, I'm Jordan.
- 12:07Speaker 5: I work with Chase travel on the weekends to some races,
- 12:11Speaker 5: so he's a mad man.
- 12:12Speaker 1: Leaving the race tracks, you just want to get out
- 12:15Speaker 1: of there and to hurry.
- 12:16Speaker 2: Well, five minutes can go a long way. And y'all
- 12:20Speaker 2: think I'm crazy about this, But it really can. So like,
- 12:23Speaker 2: you know, the races gets over and people are leaving,
- 12:26Speaker 2: and you know, obviously you want to try to beat
- 12:28Speaker 2: the traffic. So like if you mess around there for
- 12:31Speaker 2: five minutes, it could be the difference in an hour.
- 12:33Speaker 2: Oh yeah, see what I mean makes sense. So five
- 12:37Speaker 2: minutes can be the difference in you know, an hour plus.
- 12:41Speaker 2: So yeah, I'm in a slight rush.
- 12:45Speaker 1: Ready for all your credentials, sure, Elliot. Chase Elliott won
- 12:51Speaker 1: the twenty fourteen NASCAR Nationwide Series Championship, becoming the first
- 12:56Speaker 1: rookie and the youngest driver twin a National Series champamionship
- 13:00Speaker 1: in NASCAR history. You were driving race cars before you
- 13:03Speaker 1: get a driver's license. I was Did it feel weird
- 13:06Speaker 1: to go get a driver's license?
- 13:08Speaker 2: Mmmmm No, I don't think it felt weird. It probably
- 13:12Speaker 2: felt weird racing without like racing older like guys that
- 13:18Speaker 2: were older than me and me not having a driver's license.
- 13:21Speaker 2: You know that that was kind of a strange. Like
- 13:24Speaker 2: a few years I would say.
- 13:26Speaker 1: What was it observed commonly that you didn't have a
- 13:29Speaker 1: driver's license?
- 13:30Speaker 2: Yeah, for sure. It was definitely a hot topic. But
- 13:32Speaker 2: there were other kids out there that were under sixteen
- 13:36Speaker 2: that race too, So I wouldn't say it was uncommon,
- 13:38Speaker 2: but it was definitely talked about.
- 13:40Speaker 1: Yeah, Chase Elliott won the twenty twenty five season opening
- 13:45Speaker 1: exhibition race at Bowman Gray Mark.
- 13:50Speaker 2: This is for twenty twenty five, twenty twenty four, twenty
- 13:52Speaker 2: twenty five.
- 13:53Speaker 1: Yeahs it says, oh, well, okay, I just said the
- 13:57Speaker 1: year he did, oh did?
- 14:00Speaker 2: Yeah? Okay, never mind, Sorry, I thought you left the year.
- 14:02Speaker 1: Out marking his first Clash win. What the hell does
- 14:05Speaker 1: that mean to Clash win?
- 14:06Speaker 2: It's just a exhibition race that NASCAR holds every year.
- 14:11Speaker 2: The class is always been around the sport for as
- 14:14Speaker 2: long as I can remember, kind of like the All
- 14:18Speaker 2: Star Race over the summer, the Clash starts the season,
- 14:22Speaker 2: and that's just kind of what it's always been. It
- 14:24Speaker 2: used to always be in Daytona for a long time.
- 14:27Speaker 2: They would have the Clash the week before the Daytona
- 14:30Speaker 2: five hundred, and now it's transitioned to some other places.
- 14:34Speaker 2: But it's just the name of the race.
- 14:35Speaker 1: Because that's always been a weird thing about racing, is
- 14:40Speaker 1: you guys have your super Bowl at the beginning.
- 14:42Speaker 2: The beginning. I feel the same way about it. Yeah,
- 14:45Speaker 2: it's kind of weird.
- 14:46Speaker 1: It's like you start out with the Super Bowl, the
- 14:48Speaker 1: one that everybody knows.
- 14:50Speaker 2: And then what happens after that. Yeah, yeah, I find
- 14:55Speaker 2: the same problem with it for sure. I wish there
- 14:58Speaker 2: was a better way to have positioned in a different
- 15:01Speaker 2: spot selfishly, because it is such a big event and
- 15:04Speaker 2: it's such a great event. If you've never been to
- 15:06Speaker 2: the Daytona five hundred, I highly recommend you at least
- 15:09Speaker 2: go see it once. It's worth seeing. But it is
- 15:12Speaker 2: a I always find it. The most awkward part about
- 15:15Speaker 2: it for me is answering questions about, you know, this
- 15:18Speaker 2: is the super Bowl of racing.
- 15:20Speaker 1: Oh so I just did an annoying thing.
- 15:22Speaker 2: Yes, but that's okay, it's very normal, well place, you know,
- 15:27Speaker 2: And that's and most and most of the time it
- 15:29Speaker 2: is and it's just an awkward thing to talk about
- 15:32Speaker 2: and explain because it is such a big deal. But
- 15:34Speaker 2: it is totally at the beginning of our season, and
- 15:36Speaker 2: it is not You're not crowning a season champion at
- 15:40Speaker 2: that point, which is what the Super Bowl does, which
- 15:42Speaker 2: is what you know, the World Series does, or you
- 15:45Speaker 2: know whatever. So it's just a little different vibe. I
- 15:48Speaker 2: guess probably more similar to say, like the Masters or
- 15:54Speaker 2: like the US Open. You know, you have some like
- 15:57Speaker 2: marquee events in the middle of the season that aren't
- 15:59Speaker 2: necessary really crowning your season long champion, but you still
- 16:02Speaker 2: become a Daytona five hundred champion if you if you win,
- 16:06Speaker 2: just like you would become, you know, a Master champion
- 16:09Speaker 2: or whatever. So I think it's probably more similar to that, but.
- 16:12Speaker 1: Rather than chasing the final like the final top victory.
- 16:16Speaker 2: Yeah, just something just different, just different.
- 16:20Speaker 1: Elliet is the only NASCAR Cup Series driver this season
- 16:23Speaker 1: to finish all nine races in the top twenty two.
- 16:27Speaker 2: Yeah, that's not a great stat that's not top twenty,
- 16:31Speaker 2: that's not doing a whole bunch. But I mean it's
- 16:33Speaker 2: good to finish him.
- 16:33Speaker 1: No, no, no, you're in the top twenty. You finished all nine.
- 16:37Speaker 2: I heard you. But you want to be like, man,
- 16:39Speaker 2: you finished all of them in the top ten, or like.
- 16:42Speaker 1: Oh I can scratch that one out. Yeah, Bill can
- 16:44Speaker 1: go back and get.
- 16:45Speaker 2: Rid of it. I mean, look, I'm not No, it's good.
- 16:47Speaker 2: I mean it's good because you're gonna have races that
- 16:49Speaker 2: you when you're not gonna like this one.
- 16:51Speaker 1: Oh great, he is currently fifth in the Cup Series
- 16:55Speaker 1: point standings, with two top five finishes and five top
- 17:00Speaker 1: tens this season.
- 17:02Speaker 4: Yep, we like that better than the other sounds good
- 17:04Speaker 4: to me?
- 17:05Speaker 2: Yeah, I think yeah, I think that's a little better
- 17:07Speaker 2: than the other one, but not by much.
- 17:09Speaker 1: Chase Elliott has three total wins on drafting style tracks,
- 17:13Speaker 1: two at Talladega and one Atlanta Motor Speedway.
- 17:18Speaker 2: Like that one accurate wins are good? Okay.
- 17:21Speaker 1: Chase Elliott rounded off the twenty twenty four season with
- 17:24Speaker 1: one win Texas Motor Speedway. Eleven top fives in nineteen
- 17:32Speaker 1: top ten finishes.
- 17:33Speaker 4: That's a lot of racing.
- 17:36Speaker 2: Yeah, there's thirty eight or thirty six points races in
- 17:39Speaker 2: a year, So yeah, a lot of a lot of
- 17:41Speaker 2: To put that in like a better understanding, I guess yeah.
- 17:46Speaker 1: Oh, go ahead.
- 17:47Speaker 2: Are all speedways drafting style tracks? Or what's your definition
- 17:54Speaker 2: of a speedway?
- 17:55Speaker 1: You're the one that used the word earlier.
- 17:57Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I would say Talladega. Yeah, I consider speedways
- 18:01Speaker 2: like Daytona and Talladega. Okay, Atlanta is kind of an
- 18:05Speaker 2: outlier because they recon Atlanta is not really a speedway.
- 18:10Speaker 2: It's a mile and a half where Daytona and Talladega
- 18:13Speaker 2: are you know, over two miles.
- 18:16Speaker 1: So it's just.
- 18:19Speaker 2: They reconfigured the track and change the rules a little
- 18:23Speaker 2: bit to make it a drafting style track, but I wouldn't.
- 18:26Speaker 2: It is now a speedway, but it's a much smaller speedway.
- 18:30Speaker 1: A speedway means you get going real speedy. Because it's long,
- 18:33Speaker 1: you have longer runs.
- 18:34Speaker 2: Yep, it's a good way to put it.
- 18:37Speaker 1: I'm gonna move this one a decimal place to make
- 18:39Speaker 1: it better.
- 18:40Speaker 2: Okay.
- 18:42Speaker 1: Named one of NASCAR's seven point five greatest drivers.
- 18:46Speaker 2: Much better than seventy five. Thank you, thank you. I'll
- 18:51Speaker 2: take it. I'll take it.
- 18:52Speaker 1: One of NASCAR's seventy five greatest drivers. But you're still young, Yeah, fairly,
- 18:58Speaker 1: you're young for a driver twenty nine years.
- 19:00Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean I'm not as young as I once was,
- 19:02Speaker 2: but yeah, I'm still on the younger side of the equation.
- 19:06Speaker 2: Who's the youngest right now? Who is the youngest right now?
- 19:13Speaker 2: Who am I thinking? Who am I missing?
- 19:15Speaker 5: There's some rookies this year Husa R. I don't know
- 19:18Speaker 5: how old he is, but he'll be pretty young.
- 19:20Speaker 2: Yeah, he would have to be pretty young.
- 19:22Speaker 1: How old are you?
- 19:23Speaker 2: Seth thirty three.
- 19:26Speaker 1: Seth's gonna give you some life advice.
- 19:27Speaker 2: Great, I need it. I can't. I don't. I can't
- 19:33Speaker 2: right off the top of my head. But there's probably
- 19:35Speaker 2: some guys in their early twenties I would say, right now.
- 19:37Speaker 1: Really, O, come you want more?
- 19:41Speaker 2: Not really?
- 19:41Speaker 1: Oh, here's a good one. Here's a good one who
- 19:43Speaker 1: wrote this?
- 19:44Speaker 2: Right? Yeah? Who did this?
- 19:46Speaker 1: Seven time consecutive winner of the NASCAR Cup Series Most
- 19:50Speaker 1: Popular Driver Award?
- 19:54Speaker 2: You like that one?
- 19:55Speaker 1: Twenty twenty NASCAR Cup Series Champion, twenty twenty any NASCAR
- 20:00Speaker 1: All Star Race winner at Bristol Motor Speedway, twenty fourteen
- 20:06Speaker 1: NASCAR Exfinity Series champion. And he's the son of Hall
- 20:17Speaker 1: of Fame inductee in sixteen times most popular Drivers, sixteen
- 20:21Speaker 1: times more popular than you.
- 20:22Speaker 2: Are, good chunk. Yeah, he's got me covered.
- 20:26Speaker 1: His father, Bill Elliott. Yeah, more popular than you?
- 20:29Speaker 2: Yes, yes, he is to this day more popular than me.
- 20:36Speaker 1: Is he a good dad though? Yeah?
- 20:37Speaker 2: He's been a good dad.
- 20:38Speaker 1: Well, you don't have any complaints about him?
- 20:41Speaker 2: No, I can't complain much.
- 20:44Speaker 1: Okay. Amazon Prime Video is sponsoring Chase. That's cool. Yeah,
- 20:48Speaker 1: free videos.
- 20:50Speaker 2: You know. I haven't talked to him. About that. But
- 20:51Speaker 2: I would totally love to get a free Prime subscription
- 20:56Speaker 2: if it's.
- 20:56Speaker 1: Currently sponsor Amazon Prime and then you.
- 21:00Speaker 2: Draft it still drafts off the credit card. Sure does.
- 21:06Speaker 1: Like that, you know, like I bet yeah, but I
- 21:08Speaker 1: would think that would you do all that and then
- 21:10Speaker 1: you go to get a video on a dinghy have
- 21:12Speaker 1: two ninety nine?
- 21:13Speaker 2: Yeah? But also you know, I'm I'm proud, I'm a
- 21:17Speaker 2: I'm a proud supporter of our own product. So you
- 21:19Speaker 2: know what, it's okay.
- 21:21Speaker 1: Yeah, No, that's a it's a great sir. My wife
- 21:23Speaker 1: worked for many years for Amazon, did you. Yeah. Uh.
- 21:26Speaker 1: He has a few races coming up, but the big,
- 21:28Speaker 1: big one is the co Cola six hundred, which will
- 21:31Speaker 1: live stream on Amazon Prime on May Really sure will?
- 21:36Speaker 4: Is that that's.
- 21:37Speaker 2: The first one? Yeah, the first one on Prime this year?
- 21:40Speaker 1: So is that gonna be a pay to play on
- 21:41Speaker 1: Prime or is it gonna be this open?
- 21:43Speaker 2: Well, you have to have a Prime subscription.
- 21:44Speaker 1: Yeah, but I mean if it's not like an added.
- 21:47Speaker 2: No, it'd be like Thursday night football for what the
- 21:51Speaker 2: NFL is done the last what two seasons?
- 21:53Speaker 1: I think?
- 21:55Speaker 2: So yeah, same thing.
- 21:59Speaker 1: Krinn Uh.
- 22:02Speaker 4: You could have scratched this one, no.
- 22:04Speaker 1: Know, because I'm not gonna talk about what I'm not
- 22:07Speaker 1: gonna talk. Krinn pulls together. People send us all kinds
- 22:10Speaker 1: of stuff and Krinn takes her picks of what she
- 22:13Speaker 1: thinks she's gonna put into this. We have a document.
- 22:15Speaker 1: If you ever look that we're looking at a laptop.
- 22:18Speaker 2: You are all looking at laptops and I'm not, so.
- 22:20Speaker 1: You don't get to and we like people to feel
- 22:21Speaker 1: left out.
- 22:22Speaker 2: Okay, let's get it.
- 22:23Speaker 4: This one, this one dinged into my feet actually, so.
- 22:27Speaker 1: She found and she liked it. Kriinn likes this one
- 22:31Speaker 1: from Peep. She likes this hit from People magazine. It's
- 22:34Speaker 1: under the Royals column. She likes it so much she
- 22:38Speaker 1: included it in the in the talking points here and
- 22:41Speaker 1: then tried to back out of it. Uh So, if
- 22:46Speaker 1: you're if you want to get into Krin's head, here's
- 22:48Speaker 1: something that Krinn sees and she's like, it's this Princess Charlotte.
- 22:57Speaker 1: I didn't know that that was that kid's name. Yeah,
- 22:59Speaker 1: I didn't. Princess Charlotte's tenth birthday photo had a surprising
- 23:05Speaker 1: royal first thanks to Kate Middleton.
- 23:11Speaker 2: I'm a little lost over here. Somebody's got to help.
- 23:16Speaker 1: What part did you get lost on this? On the document?
- 23:20Speaker 5: How you're going to bring this back to the conversation done?
- 23:26Speaker 2: We totally left me.
- 23:29Speaker 1: Yeah, here's all worse.
- 23:31Speaker 2: Because I was worried too, and I was like, man,
- 23:33Speaker 2: where is this going? Told you we went to Princess Charlotte.
- 23:37Speaker 1: We we we We opened the show up. Nine out
- 23:41Speaker 1: of ten times, you open the show up and you'll
- 23:45Speaker 1: introduce the guest. Okay, you don't really want them to
- 23:48Speaker 1: say that much. You just want them to kind of
- 23:50Speaker 1: sit there and you can introduce them. Then we do
- 23:55Speaker 1: like interesting things from the news, corrections, listener feedback, and
- 24:00Speaker 1: then we do the guest interview perfect but because it's
- 24:05Speaker 1: on video, right, so if you didn't introduce the person,
- 24:09Speaker 1: people are wondering who's that person sitting there? And I
- 24:11Speaker 1: don't think people like the part of the show where
- 24:13Speaker 1: we do the news.
- 24:15Speaker 4: I think they want to hear from the guests primarily.
- 24:17Speaker 1: So you want to get you let them know there
- 24:20Speaker 1: is a guest so they don't all stop listening. But
- 24:23Speaker 1: then what the part that we like is the news.
- 24:28Speaker 2: You force them to hang around for it.
- 24:31Speaker 3: We start with do a little bit for the guests,
- 24:33Speaker 3: then we do a little bit for us and then
- 24:35Speaker 3: and then go back all.
- 24:38Speaker 4: Right, so that we don't take twenty five minutes on
- 24:40Speaker 4: this first news item. The only reason why I thought
- 24:43Speaker 4: it was funny.
- 24:44Speaker 1: She had a camouflage jacket.
- 24:45Speaker 4: Yeah, is that it's the first It's not like I
- 24:48Speaker 4: follow People magazine number one. It's not like I fired
- 24:51Speaker 4: news of the UK Royal Yes, thanks thanks to Apple News.
- 24:56Speaker 1: She's got to fit in. Is that massioke.
- 24:59Speaker 4: It's not in a American brand. I look really, really
- 25:02Speaker 4: really closely, and it's a it's a it's a British brand.
- 25:09Speaker 1: They really bury the lead.
- 25:12Speaker 4: Yeah, the news.
- 25:13Speaker 1: The headline doesn't have it, the next line doesn't have it.
- 25:17Speaker 1: And then because they know they don't really have much, ye, writer,
- 25:21Speaker 1: they don't have much.
- 25:21Speaker 4: I thought it was going to be a little bit
- 25:23Speaker 4: more about how she was outdoors, clearly somewhere in the elements,
- 25:31Speaker 4: wearing her camo, or that maybe it was going to
- 25:33Speaker 4: be like she was on a hunting trip with the family.
- 25:35Speaker 4: It wasn't that. It was that her mom is an
- 25:38Speaker 4: amateur photographer and took this portrait with her iPhone.
- 25:42Speaker 1: But and she's got a cameo jacket.
- 25:44Speaker 4: Yes, and she's got a camo jacket moving on.
- 25:47Speaker 1: That tickles Krinn.
- 25:48Speaker 2: This is going to be one of the social clips,
- 25:50Speaker 2: by the way. I'm just letting you.
- 25:51Speaker 1: Know that tickles Krinn. I always tell my kids, as Americans,
- 25:57Speaker 1: they have an obligation to dislike that royal family. You know,
- 26:02Speaker 1: we had to fight a big war against those guys. Yeah,
- 26:07Speaker 1: but you.
- 26:08Speaker 4: Know, this young girl is celebrating the outdoors. That's something new.
- 26:12Speaker 1: Is she like them for?
- 26:14Speaker 2: Yeah? Yeah, Cao is just a little trendy right now.
- 26:18Speaker 1: The simple act of having on a cameo jacket is
- 26:21Speaker 1: celebrating the outdoors.
- 26:22Speaker 4: No, but she's you know, it looks like she's somewhere
- 26:27Speaker 4: outdoors adventuring somehow.
- 26:30Speaker 1: Look who's celebrating the outdoors over here?
- 26:32Speaker 5: Yeah, I've got the count on, so I don't know
- 26:36Speaker 5: if I count.
- 26:39Speaker 1: A while back, I made up a saying that I
- 26:41Speaker 1: talked about so much that people asked me to stop
- 26:43Speaker 1: talking about it. I made up a saying A fresh
- 26:45Speaker 1: set of eyes will always find more beans, and it's
- 26:48Speaker 1: a it's a gardening saying. This guy's wife, he wrote
- 26:52Speaker 1: in to say his brilliant wife came up with the
- 26:55Speaker 1: old time saying of her own, uh, all leaves and
- 27:01Speaker 1: no branches.
- 27:05Speaker 2: I kind of like it.
- 27:06Speaker 1: I don't like it. I'm not going to use that
- 27:09Speaker 1: meaning an argument looks great or seemingly great, but there's
- 27:13Speaker 1: no structure support to the argument.
- 27:16Speaker 2: Yeah, makes sense.
- 27:21Speaker 1: I'm not going to use it, and I bet you
- 27:22Speaker 1: don't use it.
- 27:23Speaker 2: I'll probably forget about it. I'm not going to use
- 27:26Speaker 2: it mainly because.
- 27:28Speaker 1: Interview that's a good challenge.
- 27:30Speaker 2: I mean, it's a good challenge for sure.
- 27:34Speaker 1: In a post race interview you can say, like, you
- 27:36Speaker 1: know what I always say, all leaves and the branch.
- 27:38Speaker 2: All branches. I have to really think about that one.
- 27:41Speaker 2: But yeah, I don't. I don't think that one's coming back.
- 27:45Speaker 1: A guy was hunting on Kodiak Island this past season
- 27:49Speaker 1: and he got a banded. He shot a black scolder
- 27:52Speaker 1: with a band on it. It's type of duck. The
- 27:56Speaker 1: band was severely worn. I've heard of those bands. When
- 27:59Speaker 1: you see a band. Uh, my kid's buddy at high
- 28:02Speaker 1: school killed a gold nine, the banded Gold nine. You
- 28:05Speaker 1: know we're talking about a band.
- 28:06Speaker 2: I don't.
- 28:07Speaker 4: So.
- 28:07Speaker 1: One of the ways they really kind of uncovered the
- 28:10Speaker 1: mysteries of migratory waterfowl is many many decades ago, they started,
- 28:15Speaker 1: I don't know what year, but they started this program
- 28:17Speaker 1: where they'll take a they'll put them, they'll catch fledgling birds,
- 28:22Speaker 1: they'll catch ducks, and they can also use they can
- 28:25Speaker 1: also catch adults using trapnets and stuff, and they'll fit
- 28:29Speaker 1: them with a metal band with a number with a
- 28:33Speaker 1: phone number and a number and it says like if
- 28:36Speaker 1: found or if recovered or whatever, call blank number. Because
- 28:40Speaker 1: picture you got a duck in Canada in the summertime
- 28:44Speaker 1: and you put a band on it. It's hard to
- 28:46Speaker 1: believe now, but they didn't know how they went, where
- 28:48Speaker 1: they went and how they went. You didn't know like
- 28:52Speaker 1: where who went where, And so they would write down
- 28:56Speaker 1: where it was when they put the band on it,
- 28:58Speaker 1: and then they start all these bands start flooding in
- 29:01Speaker 1: from hunters getting the ducks, and they were able to
- 29:05Speaker 1: put together this very detailed map of like ducks that
- 29:09Speaker 1: are here go there, ducks that are here go there,
- 29:12Speaker 1: which is not well understood prior to that. But when
- 29:15Speaker 1: a band gets to be a certain age, it starts
- 29:18Speaker 1: to wear. And Mark Pierce was telling me that I
- 29:23Speaker 1: can't remember which one it is Oh, the diver ducks.
- 29:27Speaker 1: For whatever reason, diver ducks bands get worn down faster
- 29:30Speaker 1: than puddle duck bands, or the opposite, or.
- 29:35Speaker 2: If that has anything to do with like the rocks
- 29:37Speaker 2: along the coast or something.
- 29:39Speaker 1: Or it could have been the opposite. I can't remember.
- 29:41Speaker 2: How long does a duck live?
- 29:43Speaker 1: Well, you're gonna hear one right now. Check this out.
- 29:46Speaker 1: This is extraordinary though. Well, we killed a crane one time.
- 29:51Speaker 1: We killed a sandhill crane and the Panhandle of Texas
- 29:54Speaker 1: that everybody claimed once they realized they had a band, Like,
- 29:57Speaker 1: everybody claimed to have gotten that one, and it had
- 30:01Speaker 1: been banded as an adult seventeen years earlier in Fairbanks
- 30:06Speaker 1: outside of Fairbanks, Alaska. So he killed this guy, kills
- 30:10Speaker 1: o Scholder. He couldn't even read the band, the band
- 30:15Speaker 1: was soul worn. But he sends it. He sends it
- 30:18Speaker 1: into the USGS bird band Lab, and they acid etched
- 30:23Speaker 1: the band and they could find they could find the number.
- 30:29Speaker 1: Turns out this bird is the new longevity record for
- 30:36Speaker 1: a black scolder. That's not a bit you've been wearing
- 30:39Speaker 1: that old enough to drink beer. A twenty one year
- 30:45Speaker 1: old wild duck.
- 30:46Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, old enough.
- 30:49Speaker 1: To drink beer.
- 30:49Speaker 2: So what would average be two? Really?
- 30:53Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't know. It'd be an easy thing to
- 30:57Speaker 1: find out, but no, I mean like a lot of guys.
- 31:01Speaker 1: You know a lot of guys. You kill a band
- 31:02Speaker 1: of duck and you know what you find out? They
- 31:05Speaker 1: banned it earlier that year. Yeah, you know, twenty one
- 31:09Speaker 1: years old. The previous record was fourteen jeez, you know
- 31:18Speaker 1: me decoys and that that bird has been shot at.
- 31:23Speaker 2: Yeah, for sure in twenty one years shot.
- 31:30Speaker 1: Uh, they don't ban a lot of those. Oh here's
- 31:33Speaker 1: something interesting. This is illegal, but interesting, you.
- 31:38Speaker 2: Like illegal according to your driving.
- 31:47Speaker 1: So I was talking about one of the most interesting
- 31:50Speaker 1: days I've ever spent was in the south southern end
- 31:53Speaker 1: of the Philippines, and I spent the day at the
- 31:54Speaker 1: cock fights. And guy here says, you have an open
- 31:58Speaker 1: invitation to get a hold of me any you're in Kentucky.
- 32:03Speaker 1: I should not read this out loud, MD.
- 32:05Speaker 2: I want to name drop on this. Yeah, yeah, true.
- 32:11Speaker 1: He goes on to say, I'm pleasantly surprised to hear
- 32:15Speaker 1: you guys are interested in going to some cock fighting.
- 32:19Speaker 1: There are tons of he goes on, there are tons
- 32:21Speaker 1: of hypocrisies by public and lawmakers. They're trying to make
- 32:25Speaker 1: it a felony in the state of Kentucky. It's already
- 32:28Speaker 1: a felony. Elsewhere Is it legal to pile chickens and
- 32:32Speaker 1: their own shit on top of each other their whole
- 32:34Speaker 1: life and then drag them out and cut their heads
- 32:37Speaker 1: off and throw them in a sink hole? Yep, but
- 32:43Speaker 1: you can't cockfight.
- 32:46Speaker 2: He says.
- 32:47Speaker 4: Game chickens are taking care of better than most people's dogs.
- 32:50Speaker 4: So I guess those who uh run in these circles
- 32:57Speaker 4: take really good care of those birds.
- 33:01Speaker 1: The mum not sure about this one until the end.
- 33:05Speaker 1: I learned that through my mung friends that there's the
- 33:09Speaker 1: the older mung. Cock fighting was very popular with the
- 33:12Speaker 1: older munk. But they don't put the they don't use
- 33:16Speaker 1: a blade. Is that explaining this?
- 33:19Speaker 2: Yeah, how they attach blades to the like?
- 33:23Speaker 1: Yeah, well, in the Philippines they put like a scythe
- 33:26Speaker 1: on them. I mean they put a there's a guy.
- 33:28Speaker 1: There's like a regulation dude, you know, like in boxing,
- 33:32Speaker 1: was like like like the kind of you know, you
- 33:33Speaker 1: wrap the hands and everything and they check it, like
- 33:36Speaker 1: everything's got to be checked to make sure you're you know,
- 33:38Speaker 1: you don't have like lead inserts or something in your midst. Right,
- 33:41Speaker 1: there's a dude and like every guy brings his rooster
- 33:44Speaker 1: in and and you lash the blades on him over
- 33:48Speaker 1: his spurs, this big stainless blade. And then there's a
- 33:53Speaker 1: guy that like checks to make sure everything's legit. And
- 33:56Speaker 1: when these roosters it's over, like they jump up and
- 34:02Speaker 1: do their initial child fight and one of them is
- 34:07Speaker 1: not alive anymore because they got blades. But what they're
- 34:12Speaker 1: explained about the monk is you don't put blades on them,
- 34:15Speaker 1: so it's not.
- 34:17Speaker 4: Yeah, so they're more and you.
- 34:18Speaker 1: Kind of judge it. You kind of judge it. And
- 34:21Speaker 1: what will happen is one chicken, one rooster. Well, the
- 34:26Speaker 1: minute he backs down, he loses. It's very Yeah, it's
- 34:32Speaker 1: much more. It's a much more kinder, gentler cockf It's
- 34:40Speaker 1: like you take, like, here's the deal. They're not incentivizing
- 34:43Speaker 1: the roosters to fight. The roosters want to fight. I
- 34:47Speaker 1: could see you saying that you can't put a blade
- 34:50Speaker 1: on him. That makes like I could I could picture that.
- 34:54Speaker 1: But if like if let's say you're you are at
- 34:57Speaker 1: your you say you raise chickens, and you go in
- 35:00Speaker 1: the house and then accidentally two of your roosters get
- 35:03Speaker 1: in a fight. Are you a felon?
- 35:05Speaker 4: I was actually just gonna ask that, what if roosters
- 35:08Speaker 4: all mingle and no.
- 35:11Speaker 2: But if I bring a bunch of people over and
- 35:13Speaker 2: we throw some money down, then you are.
- 35:15Speaker 1: Then you are.
- 35:16Speaker 2: Then you're in trouble.
- 35:17Speaker 1: That's what one guy that wrote in explained to me
- 35:19Speaker 1: about it is. He says, what's what's the bad part
- 35:22Speaker 1: about it is the beton. The bad part is the
- 35:25Speaker 1: beton on what chicken's gonna win. That's all I want
- 35:34Speaker 1: to clarify the people. I haven't been to a cockfight.
- 35:35Speaker 1: I've never been to a cockfight in America. I'm not
- 35:37Speaker 1: like Joe cockfight.
- 35:40Speaker 3: When I was living in Pennsylvania, we had twenty nine
- 35:44Speaker 3: chickens and the bear one night broke in the chicken
- 35:46Speaker 3: coop killed twenty eight. Wow, And the only one that
- 35:49Speaker 3: was left was a big old rooster. He had like
- 35:51Speaker 3: three inch spurs, and I felt that he would have
- 35:53Speaker 3: been a good candidate for a cockfight.
- 35:56Speaker 2: Yeah, only a good candidate though, right. Yeah.
- 36:01Speaker 3: Then I actually I was checking traps one day and
- 36:04Speaker 3: I had one of his spurs in my trap.
- 36:10Speaker 2: Almost caught him, but just got a spur.
- 36:13Speaker 1: Are you ready for the part now?
- 36:15Speaker 2: I don't know, am I.
- 36:17Speaker 1: First off, we went fishing to day. We did, Yeah,
- 36:20Speaker 1: we went.
- 36:20Speaker 2: Yeah, we went fishing. We didn't get any We didn't
- 36:23Speaker 2: do any catching, but we.
- 36:24Speaker 1: Think about that whole experience though.
- 36:25Speaker 2: I thought it was awesome. I really did.
- 36:27Speaker 1: You liked it?
- 36:27Speaker 2: I mean minus the not catching anything, you know, but
- 36:30Speaker 2: that's part of it.
- 36:31Speaker 1: But it's a hard, hard time of year, yeah, with
- 36:35Speaker 1: all the spring runoff.
- 36:36Speaker 2: But it was and we talked about it some on
- 36:39Speaker 2: the way up there. But just uh being out there,
- 36:42Speaker 2: I mean just you guys have such a pure place
- 36:45Speaker 2: to live and film and do. And I mean just
- 36:50Speaker 2: the hike up and back was worth the trip in
- 36:54Speaker 2: my opinion.
- 36:54Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, it is beautiful. It's frust to not catch them.
- 37:01Speaker 2: It is frustrating.
- 37:02Speaker 1: And then you know, and you're in my situation, you
- 37:04Speaker 1: got to resist the urge to be like, we caught
- 37:08Speaker 1: one right there. We caught one right there.
- 37:10Speaker 2: When the cameras were uh two miles back.
- 37:13Speaker 1: We caught one right there, right Yeah.
- 37:16Speaker 2: It was okay, though, I mean, I in fairness, you
- 37:18Speaker 2: did put me on one that I missed, and that
- 37:21Speaker 2: was on me.
- 37:21Speaker 1: Those on you he had it engulfed.
- 37:24Speaker 2: That was on me. Fly that was late.
- 37:27Speaker 1: It was your fish to catch it was.
- 37:29Speaker 2: That's all right. I learned my lesson.
- 37:31Speaker 1: Yeah, it's good. Though. We talked about he started driving
- 37:35Speaker 1: super young. M hm uh. And I was asking you
- 37:39Speaker 1: earlier maybe you can explain it. I was saying, if
- 37:41Speaker 1: you're gonna ask little kids what they want to be
- 37:43Speaker 1: when they grow up, being a race car drivers, like
- 37:46Speaker 1: in top five, it's like you could be like a veterinarian.
- 37:50Speaker 1: They know about that, astronauts they know about they know
- 37:54Speaker 1: about being a race car driver.
- 37:56Speaker 2: I know it's just kind of odd but true. Yeah,
- 37:59Speaker 2: totally right about that.
- 38:00Speaker 1: But at a point you at a point it looked realistic. Yep.
- 38:07Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean honestly, and I don't know how much
- 38:09Speaker 2: of that you want me to rego over talk about. Yeah,
- 38:15Speaker 2: for me, I mean, I I never, I truthfully never
- 38:17Speaker 2: wanted to do anything else. I mean, it was always
- 38:21Speaker 2: it was always my dream, and I grew up around it.
- 38:25Speaker 2: My dad raced. You know, so much like your kids
- 38:28Speaker 2: are living the outdoors and getting to do things that
- 38:31Speaker 2: a lot of kids might not be able to do
- 38:32Speaker 2: across the country I was racing. Was that way for me,
- 38:35Speaker 2: I got to see it from a completely different advantage point.
- 38:38Speaker 2: And you know, for me, my dad was he was
- 38:42Speaker 2: a part of the show on a weekly basis, and
- 38:44Speaker 2: it was just the most incredible, crazy thing to witness
- 38:48Speaker 2: and watch as a five six seven year old when
- 38:51Speaker 2: you're just kind of getting old enough to start understanding
- 38:53Speaker 2: or partially start to understand what's going on. And it
- 38:56Speaker 2: was amazing, And so of course I wanted to try.
- 39:00Speaker 2: I wanted to do that, you know, and give it
- 39:03Speaker 2: a shot. And uh yeah, so we started racing go
- 39:06Speaker 2: karts and then started taking the necessary steps and in
- 39:09Speaker 2: the process of trying to make a path out of it,
- 39:11Speaker 2: and yeah, off we went and fortunately had enough right
- 39:16Speaker 2: opportunities and success at the right time, and all those
- 39:20Speaker 2: stars kind of aligned to you know, at least make
- 39:22Speaker 2: a career out of it. This far?
- 39:24Speaker 1: Were you drawn to it because like the way kids
- 39:27Speaker 1: are kind of focused on their dads, because at a
- 39:30Speaker 1: point that has to go away, right, Like, well, you know,
- 39:33Speaker 1: when you're little, you know about your dad and you
- 39:36Speaker 1: see what he does, You're like, well, I want to
- 39:37Speaker 1: do that because I like my dad, but at a point,
- 39:41Speaker 1: not that you stop liking your dad, but you know,
- 39:43Speaker 1: you're you're, you're in, your inputs become more complicated than that.
- 39:46Speaker 2: Right, Yeah, totally fair question and and true because yeah,
- 39:50Speaker 2: I think there comes a point in time where you
- 39:52Speaker 2: at some point have to have some natural interests and
- 39:56Speaker 2: you have to become you have to have your own
- 39:58Speaker 2: obsession with it, right, or it's just never gonna it's
- 40:01Speaker 2: never gonna work. And that definitely happened. I don't know
- 40:05Speaker 2: at what age that happened, Probably when things got you know,
- 40:10Speaker 2: we're starting to get more serious for me racing, I
- 40:13Speaker 2: would say probably ten eleven twelve. That probably transitioned from hey,
- 40:19Speaker 2: I want to go do this because Dad was doing
- 40:21Speaker 2: it and it was really cool too. Wow, this is
- 40:24Speaker 2: an extremely difficult and rare discipline that I really respect
- 40:30Speaker 2: and admire. And that was really where I think the
- 40:33Speaker 2: love for it for me exploded, because I realized there
- 40:39Speaker 2: was just so much more to the puzzle than meets
- 40:43Speaker 2: the eye, and also that way more than I think
- 40:47Speaker 2: people ever give it credit for, and just the craft
- 40:50Speaker 2: and everything that goes on behind the scenes, and I
- 40:53Speaker 2: fell in love with that, and that's really the reason
- 40:56Speaker 2: that you know, I enjoy it still to this day, you.
- 40:59Speaker 1: Know, when I look at it, like when we're talking
- 41:02Speaker 1: today and you're talking about like you said, like use
- 41:06Speaker 1: the word the craft of it right, and the processing
- 41:10Speaker 1: processing information very quickly, learning how to try to slow
- 41:15Speaker 1: things that seem very fast, short distances that are covered
- 41:19Speaker 1: very quickly, to slow it down and understand it like
- 41:21Speaker 1: how you do understand a long drive. Yep, all that
- 41:26Speaker 1: as like a person not from that world. When I
- 41:29Speaker 1: look at it, I think that the number one, like
- 41:34Speaker 1: the number one thing going on is that I think
- 41:37Speaker 1: these people are very comfortable with death. And I'm like,
- 41:41Speaker 1: that must be what makes a good racer.
- 41:43Speaker 2: Yeah, and it's it's not.
- 41:45Speaker 1: It's where you have to be like no, I don't mind,
- 41:48Speaker 1: I don't mind, be right, going two hundred miles an hour,
- 41:51Speaker 1: six inches off this dude's bumper or whatever. Like that's
- 41:54Speaker 1: like to me, like the defining feature is you're comfortable
- 41:56Speaker 1: with that.
- 41:58Speaker 2: I think there is definitely a level of acceptance to
- 42:03Speaker 2: the risk for all of us, and there are certainly
- 42:07Speaker 2: tracks that carry higher risk than other tracks as it
- 42:11Speaker 2: pertains to crashes and injury and just the amount of
- 42:15Speaker 2: things that can go wrong, But you know, to your point,
- 42:19Speaker 2: you're going pretty fast on a weekly basis at most
- 42:22Speaker 2: places that we go, and things can happen anywhere. So yeah,
- 42:26Speaker 2: I definitely think there's a level of acceptance with that.
- 42:29Speaker 2: But I would say I could speak for probably all
- 42:33Speaker 2: of us in the sense that we don't get there.
- 42:37Speaker 3: You know.
- 42:38Speaker 2: It's like I explained to you coming over here. You know,
- 42:41Speaker 2: if you're driving eighty through downtown Bozman, you're gonna think
- 42:45Speaker 2: you're hauling ass. If you're driving eighty on the highway,
- 42:50Speaker 2: everyone else is doing eighty, so it's not that big
- 42:53Speaker 2: of a deal that way. So it's very much the
- 42:57Speaker 2: same for us. I can say there's really no thrill
- 43:02Speaker 2: anymore about going two hundred. It's not have a heart
- 43:06Speaker 2: attack and die, but you wouldn't after you might the
- 43:10Speaker 2: first time, but in a month you'd be. It would
- 43:14Speaker 2: your your surroundings would become very much more normal to you,
- 43:17Speaker 2: and and that's totally what happens. So then it's like, so,
- 43:22Speaker 2: so the thrill factor of it goes away after time,
- 43:27Speaker 2: and and then you start focusing in on more of
- 43:29Speaker 2: like the small, little fine details of how can I
- 43:33Speaker 2: push the car a little further, you know, it becomes
- 43:35Speaker 2: such a it becomes so much more competition based than
- 43:38Speaker 2: it does that. It's it's way more centered around that
- 43:42Speaker 2: than it is like, oh wow, you know, just holding
- 43:45Speaker 2: on for dear life, going two hundred miles an hour
- 43:47Speaker 2: and this is cool and crazy and wow, look at us.
- 43:49Speaker 2: It's not that's that's just not the mindset. It's it's
- 43:53Speaker 2: so much more competition related. And the details that can
- 43:58Speaker 2: make someone great versus someone that's good are the most
- 44:04Speaker 2: minuscule things that you could ever. I can't even hardly
- 44:07Speaker 2: sit here and describe them to you because a lot
- 44:09Speaker 2: of it's just tiny little feel things in the car
- 44:12Speaker 2: that you're feeling with your butt or with your hands,
- 44:14Speaker 2: or what you're seeing with your eyes, and and that
- 44:17Speaker 2: kind of comes back to the processing things. You know,
- 44:20Speaker 2: as as quick as things are happening, the slower you
- 44:24Speaker 2: can process that stuff, I think, the better it makes
- 44:26Speaker 2: a driver.
- 44:29Speaker 1: You had said something to me that I thought about
- 44:31Speaker 1: a bunch since you told me this morning. We're I
- 44:34Speaker 1: was talking about what is the what is the entry
- 44:37Speaker 1: point for kids coming in? And you talked about like
- 44:40Speaker 1: goal cart racing, dirt track racing, and you said, what
- 44:45Speaker 1: matters more? What matters more than like what it is
- 44:50Speaker 1: is is it competitive?
- 44:52Speaker 2: Yeah? True?
- 44:53Speaker 1: And I started thinking about that because that has like
- 44:56Speaker 1: I feel that just things from my life, like I
- 45:00Speaker 1: went to writing school, and I went to like a
- 45:02Speaker 1: very competitive writing program with like really good writers, and
- 45:07Speaker 1: you like there's such like a sink or swim kind
- 45:10Speaker 1: of thing about it, you know, and and even like
- 45:13Speaker 1: guys that become guys that become like really good versatile hunters,
- 45:19Speaker 1: like people you could bring anywhere, like bring them anywhere
- 45:22Speaker 1: and they're going to figure stuff out. A lot of
- 45:26Speaker 1: them coming out of competitive app like you got to
- 45:29Speaker 1: like work harder, get up earlier, walk farther out, smart outthink.
- 45:34Speaker 1: I mean, like you have to like learn to deal
- 45:36Speaker 1: and then that makes it that you develop your expertise.
- 45:43Speaker 1: But I don't think people think about it like, no,
- 45:44Speaker 1: you got to look for the.
- 45:45Speaker 2: Competition percent That's my opinion, and someone else might tell
- 45:49Speaker 2: you something different, But I think that, you know, when
- 45:52Speaker 2: you asked the question, it's well, how do you start?
- 45:54Speaker 2: You know, like if if your kids are interested in,
- 45:56Speaker 2: like what would you go do? And that varies because
- 46:00Speaker 2: in some parts of the country asphalt racing might be
- 46:04Speaker 2: really strong and healthy and popular. And if it's strong
- 46:08Speaker 2: and healthy and popular, odds are it's going to be
- 46:10Speaker 2: more competitive. Are there other types of racing you could
- 46:12Speaker 2: go do. Yeah, probably so, But if it's not as
- 46:15Speaker 2: healthy and popular, then you're probably not getting the same
- 46:19Speaker 2: level of competition. So I think it is very much
- 46:23Speaker 2: tailored to where you live, where you're from, what part
- 46:27Speaker 2: of the country you live in, and what is going
- 46:29Speaker 2: to challenge you the most, because if you're not, if
- 46:32Speaker 2: you're not challenged, you're you know, at some point that's
- 46:35Speaker 2: gonna that's gonna beat you up, you know, And racing
- 46:39Speaker 2: is one of those things where you when you get started,
- 46:43Speaker 2: you know, a family could probably win their way with
- 46:48Speaker 2: spending the most money to a point, but at some
- 46:51Speaker 2: point that that's going to end. Right, at some point
- 46:54Speaker 2: you're going to meet somebody that's as good as you,
- 46:56Speaker 2: if not better, with the same equipment, and then how
- 46:58Speaker 2: do you deal with that? And and I think that's
- 47:01Speaker 2: a you know, that's an important piece of of racing
- 47:04Speaker 2: because it's you know, at some point down the line
- 47:07Speaker 2: that that challenge is is going to grow near and
- 47:10Speaker 2: and I think understanding how to how to deal with that,
- 47:13Speaker 2: you know, to your point kind of that that mindset
- 47:16Speaker 2: is is going to help you.
- 47:17Speaker 1: One day, I'd heard this story through my kids about
- 47:20Speaker 1: a kid that like a buddy of there's that was
- 47:26Speaker 1: like a dominating force in Bozeman baseball, which is not
- 47:31Speaker 1: this is not a baseball town, you know, So like
- 47:34Speaker 1: you're dominating force in Bozeman baseball.
- 47:37Speaker 2: Like in high school.
- 47:38Speaker 1: Yeah, okay, but then he goes down to Florida and
- 47:42Speaker 1: then how yeah, and you're like, oh, I had no idea. Yeah,
- 47:46Speaker 1: I mean saying like I had no idea, dude, Yeah.
- 47:49Speaker 2: That's exactly what I'm talking about, Like that exactly. That's
- 47:53Speaker 2: a great example and I'll probably use that one day
- 47:56Speaker 2: because that's, uh, that's a great way to put it.
- 47:58Speaker 2: And and totally this along the exact same lines I
- 48:02Speaker 2: was talking.
- 48:02Speaker 1: Yeah, you're saying that maybe kind of rethink some of
- 48:04Speaker 1: that stuff, be like, well, yeah, why do all these
- 48:07Speaker 1: like you know, like Texas cranks out, you know, great football,
- 48:12Speaker 1: you know, Florida craiks, all these great baseball players and
- 48:14Speaker 1: like is it like the water you know, and why
- 48:17Speaker 1: is it being well, yeah, it's like you're saying, it's
- 48:19Speaker 1: like you've You've created a place where people have to
- 48:22Speaker 1: dig deeper and deeper and deeper to stay on top,
- 48:24Speaker 1: and you can't just ease on top.
- 48:26Speaker 2: Exactly, and you can do it all year long down there.
- 48:30Speaker 1: There's Yeah, that's a big part too. We talk about
- 48:32Speaker 1: that too.
- 48:33Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean that, that's a fact for that, that's
- 48:35Speaker 2: totally a factory. You know, out here for sure for
- 48:38Speaker 2: the at least for baseball and you know, golf, if
- 48:41Speaker 2: you're into that, out here be a struggle to play
- 48:44Speaker 2: for two months?
- 48:46Speaker 1: Do you think are you just is it like more
- 48:49Speaker 1: about competition or is it more about cars? Like if
- 48:52Speaker 1: you didn't if you didn't race, would you be would
- 48:54Speaker 1: you do you feel that you would have found some
- 48:55Speaker 1: other thing to compete in.
- 48:58Speaker 2: I could see it, for sure. I don't know what
- 49:00Speaker 2: that would be. But I just I love sports just
- 49:04Speaker 2: in general. I'm just a huge sports fan. I love
- 49:09Speaker 2: watching I'm not going to sit here and tell you
- 49:12Speaker 2: I know everything about every other sport, but I certainly
- 49:15Speaker 2: appreciate the discipline of other sports, and you know, some
- 49:19Speaker 2: of the greatness and the greats that that play it
- 49:22Speaker 2: or are part of it. So having said that I
- 49:26Speaker 2: could see it, I don't know what it would have been.
- 49:27Speaker 2: I wasn't super good at anything else, but I also
- 49:29Speaker 2: didn't you know, in fairness, I never really devoted a
- 49:33Speaker 2: lot of time to any other sport, but I could
- 49:37Speaker 2: have certainly seen me trying, you know, if.
- 49:39Speaker 1: Nothing else, competition trout, fishermen.
- 49:42Speaker 2: Maybe that, maybe that.
- 49:44Speaker 1: Are you good at golf? You play golf?
- 49:45Speaker 2: Get check out those brook trout You talk?
- 49:49Speaker 1: Yes, are you like, could you go pro at golf?
- 49:54Speaker 2: Oh? Absolutely not?
- 49:55Speaker 1: No?
- 49:56Speaker 2: No.
- 49:57Speaker 1: What was it like when you so you go through
- 50:01Speaker 1: all the what don't I don't know? I was going
- 50:03Speaker 1: to ask you, you go through all the steps that
- 50:07Speaker 1: all of a sudden you're like, you know, your first
- 50:10Speaker 1: NASCAR race? What are the steps? Help me understand? Like
- 50:14Speaker 1: what is like the thing you got? You know, it's
- 50:16Speaker 1: like t like like t ball, little league, you know,
- 50:20Speaker 1: like where does it go?
- 50:22Speaker 2: Well, kind of goes back to where you live and
- 50:25Speaker 2: how you start. But for me, it was when I
- 50:30Speaker 2: first got into racing, you know, which was kind of
- 50:33Speaker 2: those early days of I want to do this because
- 50:36Speaker 2: Dad was doing it right. Uh. At that point it
- 50:39Speaker 2: was we were living in Georgia and there were some
- 50:44Speaker 2: small dirt go kart tracks around North Georgia, just within
- 50:48Speaker 2: you know, hour and a half two hours of the house,
- 50:51Speaker 2: and we went and you know, race some go kart
- 50:54Speaker 2: races on the weekends, like good go karts. Yeah, like fast,
- 50:58Speaker 2: you know, fairly fast or of six or well, I
- 51:01Speaker 2: guess I was probably closer to eight, but seven or
- 51:03Speaker 2: eight year old, so like within reason, we're not doing
- 51:07Speaker 2: anything crazy, but you know, it was it was competitive
- 51:10Speaker 2: for sure, and also really popular at that time in
- 51:15Speaker 2: that area, which was a good thing, you know, kind
- 51:17Speaker 2: of going back to our previous point. And so yeah,
- 51:20Speaker 2: from the go karts at that time, Dad was just
- 51:25Speaker 2: quitting racing full time. So we moved out to Colorado
- 51:28Speaker 2: and we were out there for two or three years,
- 51:31Speaker 2: and I wanted to race, and really the only thing
- 51:33Speaker 2: out there to race was go karts but asphalt and
- 51:37Speaker 2: road courses.
- 51:38Speaker 1: So did that.
- 51:40Speaker 2: For you know, two or three years while we were
- 51:42Speaker 2: living out there, and really kind of came to a crossroads.
- 51:47Speaker 2: I guess I was kind of the reason why we
- 51:49Speaker 2: moved back because I at that point thought I wanted
- 51:53Speaker 2: to keep racing and trying to race, and there really
- 51:55Speaker 2: just wasn't anything else to race out West, or at
- 51:58Speaker 2: least out in that area that was close, and you
- 52:03Speaker 2: know you're gonna end up traveling a long ways to
- 52:05Speaker 2: do it, and didn't really have the facilities to do
- 52:07Speaker 2: it and shot, you know, a good race shop and
- 52:09Speaker 2: things like that. So we ended up moving back to
- 52:12Speaker 2: Georgia to kind of help me pursue the racing thing.
- 52:16Speaker 1: And so your old man got out of it and
- 52:19Speaker 1: moved out west and then all of a sudden, you're like, well,
- 52:21Speaker 1: I want a piece of it too, and then he
- 52:23Speaker 1: packs up, everybody moves back.
- 52:25Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, I ruined it for him. So sorry, sorry
- 52:27Speaker 2: about his retirement trail, but I definitely ruined that one.
- 52:31Speaker 2: But yeah, so we moved back to Georgia, and that
- 52:34Speaker 2: was really at that point. I think that was kind
- 52:36Speaker 2: of when it started to transition from hobby fun, weekend
- 52:41Speaker 2: endeavor to hey, we're either going to get kind of
- 52:44Speaker 2: serious about this and not that you can't go have fun,
- 52:47Speaker 2: because it was you know, still having fun is important,
- 52:51Speaker 2: but it was, hey, we need to have an understanding
- 52:53Speaker 2: like this is you know, getting more expensive, and there's
- 52:58Speaker 2: a lot going on and and.
- 53:00Speaker 1: So you're spending money before you make money.
- 53:02Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely, I can imagine, dude. Yeah, And that's part
- 53:07Speaker 2: of it, you know, for sure, And that's the case
- 53:11Speaker 2: for anyone in motorsports, unfortunately, and it's just to what
- 53:14Speaker 2: level can you support that, you know, whether people support
- 53:18Speaker 2: that personally or you know, for us, it was a
- 53:21Speaker 2: little bit of a mix from you know, dad having
- 53:24Speaker 2: a good career obviously and being able to help. But
- 53:26Speaker 2: then we had good partners too, they kind of help
- 53:29Speaker 2: offset some of that. But even for us, there was
- 53:33Speaker 2: a point and my dad was really clear on this
- 53:36Speaker 2: to me at a young age. He's like, hey, you know,
- 53:40Speaker 2: I can we can keep doing this like we're doing it,
- 53:43Speaker 2: but it's not forever. You know, I'm not gonna do
- 53:46Speaker 2: this forever. Either We're going to get to a point
- 53:48Speaker 2: and somebody's gonna have to help or this is it,
- 53:50Speaker 2: you know. And and I understood that, you know, and
- 53:53Speaker 2: and so at that point, and probably a little before
- 53:57Speaker 2: that conversation, I knew that and really started to try
- 54:04Speaker 2: my best to take things as serious as I could
- 54:06Speaker 2: and you know, still enjoy it, but but just I
- 54:09Speaker 2: knew in the back of my mind, like, hey, this
- 54:10Speaker 2: is no longer a game, you know, not that it
- 54:12Speaker 2: ever was, but but it's really not a game. Anymore.
- 54:15Speaker 2: And if I'm going to make an effort at this,
- 54:16Speaker 2: I'm going to give it everything I have and I'm
- 54:19Speaker 2: going to make sure that you know, I appreciate everything
- 54:22Speaker 2: that all the people that are helping me do this
- 54:25Speaker 2: right now, you know, given my all and and you know,
- 54:31Speaker 2: try to make a proper run at it. And so
- 54:34Speaker 2: that's what we did. You know, unfortunately it you know,
- 54:36Speaker 2: it worked out.
- 54:37Speaker 1: So when when is it that you go and uh,
- 54:41Speaker 1: like there's thirty eight races year, thirty four, thirty eight,
- 54:44Speaker 1: thirty eight. Yeah, okay, what was the first time you are.
- 54:49Speaker 2: In like in NASCAR?
- 54:51Speaker 1: NASCAR?
- 54:53Speaker 2: So my first Cup race was in uh twenty sixteen. No,
- 55:00Speaker 2: I'm sorry, my first Cup race was in fifteen and
- 55:03Speaker 2: I ran like five that year. So NASCAR had a
- 55:06Speaker 2: thing I was racing nationwide, like you talked about on
- 55:08Speaker 2: the thing that changed to what's now called the Infinity Series.
- 55:13Speaker 2: It's like the basically college level college football to NFL,
- 55:20Speaker 2: I guess would be the best way to put it.
- 55:24Speaker 2: So I did that full time in twenty fourteen and
- 55:26Speaker 2: twenty fifteen. At the time, NASCAR had a rule that
- 55:31Speaker 2: you could run up to like five or six races
- 55:37Speaker 2: before your rookie campaign that didn't like take away your
- 55:41Speaker 2: rookie status. So it was almost like a lead in
- 55:43Speaker 2: to your rookie year. So in twenty mentor program, which
- 55:47Speaker 2: I needed and probably still need today, but nonetheless, we
- 55:52Speaker 2: you know, went in and at that time it had
- 55:56Speaker 2: been announced that Jeff Gordon was retiring, and you know,
- 55:59Speaker 2: I was going in that car the next year. I
- 56:02Speaker 2: knew who my crew was going to be and all that.
- 56:05Speaker 2: So basically my crew chief, who is still my crew
- 56:08Speaker 2: chief now, He and Jeff and Rick and I don't
- 56:13Speaker 2: remember who else, but kind of got together and picked
- 56:16Speaker 2: five races that they felt like was going to be
- 56:18Speaker 2: the best five for me to go do. So those
- 56:21Speaker 2: are my first Cup starts in twenty fifteen, and they
- 56:24Speaker 2: were some they were some good ones, for sure. They
- 56:27Speaker 2: were tough races and they picked those for a reason
- 56:31Speaker 2: because they knew that they were going to be challenges
- 56:34Speaker 2: the next year and the next year and the year
- 56:36Speaker 2: after that, and so you know, that was my first one.
- 56:42Speaker 2: It was at Martinsville in twenty fifteen, and yeah, it
- 56:48Speaker 2: didn't go well, but we went and made the show
- 56:50Speaker 2: and got it kicked off.
- 56:53Speaker 1: We had this former NFL player Derek Wolf, and he
- 56:58Speaker 1: was mentioned something that I had me before about coming
- 57:02Speaker 1: up in the league, as you're coming up as a
- 57:06Speaker 1: rookie and you're young, and he's like, an, all of
- 57:10Speaker 1: a sudden, you're on the field and it's like you're
- 57:12Speaker 1: on the field with guys you've been watching weird for
- 57:16Speaker 1: ten years. And he said there's actually like a starstruck
- 57:19Speaker 1: element to it for some people where you'd be like,
- 57:22Speaker 1: oh my god, there's Tom Brady right and you're supposed
- 57:25Speaker 1: to tackle him or whatever. And he says, you're kind
- 57:28Speaker 1: of like overwhelmed by You got to put it out
- 57:30Speaker 1: of your head. But all of a sudden, you're like
- 57:32Speaker 1: with the people that motivated you and inspired you to
- 57:37Speaker 1: get in there. Yep, you know it's gotta be a
- 57:40Speaker 1: little bit like that.
- 57:40Speaker 2: It was, yeah, very much that way.
- 57:42Speaker 1: They're like, oh my god, there's that one dude.
- 57:44Speaker 2: Yeah, no, I was. I mean, you know Tony Stewart,
- 57:47Speaker 2: who I was, you know, a big fan of and
- 57:49Speaker 2: a guy that I looked up to. He was racing,
- 57:53Speaker 2: he was still full time at that point. You know,
- 57:57Speaker 2: Jimmy Johnson, Casey Kane, like all that those guys were
- 58:01Speaker 2: in the show that weekend, and uh yeah, I mean,
- 58:05Speaker 2: I'm sure everybody's been through that that's grown up watching
- 58:08Speaker 2: a sport, that has ever had the opportunity to go
- 58:10Speaker 2: and play a race or be a part of it.
- 58:12Speaker 2: And yeah, there's a transitional point of kind of just
- 58:17Speaker 2: being in awe of being there, to trying to earn
- 58:23Speaker 2: your place, to establishing you know, your position is as
- 58:29Speaker 2: being a competitor to those guys and not their friends
- 58:31Speaker 2: or not their fans, you know anymore. And not that
- 58:36Speaker 2: you can't like a guy or still be a fan
- 58:38Speaker 2: of theirs, but you're in there. You know, you're in there,
- 58:40Speaker 2: and it's a you know, it's definitely a competitive environment,
- 58:42Speaker 2: and at some point that you know, that totally changes.
- 58:47Speaker 1: Uh talk about whole something. Another thing that had never
- 58:50Speaker 1: occurred to me before. How blazing hot it isn't there?
- 58:55Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a little, a little toasty for sure.
- 58:57Speaker 1: Definitely one of the main problems.
- 58:59Speaker 2: It is, it is. I don't know how hot it
- 59:03Speaker 2: gets anymore, I don't, I don't. I can't remember what
- 59:07Speaker 2: a good number is. Probably one hundred and fifteen twenty
- 59:10Speaker 2: or something in the cars that sound right ish when
- 59:15Speaker 2: they have like a thermometer, But yeah, hot, nonetheless, and
- 59:18Speaker 2: that's what we were talking about. You know, so much
- 59:20Speaker 2: of what we do, I think is kind of hard
- 59:22Speaker 2: to train for because what other activity do you do
- 59:25Speaker 2: that you know, the environment's really hot, you have an
- 59:28Speaker 2: extremely high heart rate, but you don't have a lot
- 59:30Speaker 2: of physical movement, you know, and that's just that those
- 59:32Speaker 2: are three things that are kind of hard to piece together.
- 59:36Speaker 2: But I do think from a cardio standpoint, that's probably
- 59:39Speaker 2: you know, the biggest one that can help hydration, I
- 59:43Speaker 2: would say is another one. And then ultimately I think
- 59:46Speaker 2: those two things combined together is kind of your ultimate goal.
- 59:50Speaker 2: And all of it is just heart rate control and
- 59:53Speaker 2: you know, trying to keep your heart rate down.
- 59:56Speaker 1: What do you do to do it? Because that's like
- 59:57Speaker 1: a big Like you talk to a competitive spear fishermen,
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: free divers, they got all these they got all these
- 1:00:04Speaker 1: tricks and methods for it. But a lot of times
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: you're just laying on the surface of the water and
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: you don't need to be doing anything else.
- 1:00:11Speaker 2: Yep.
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: Like all you're doing is getting your heart rate under
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: control and focusing on your breathing. You can close your
- 1:00:17Speaker 1: eyes if you want, and you're in You're buoyant at surface.
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: So it's like you're doing all these tricks, but that's all.
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: You're not doing anything else. You're not moving two hundred
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: miles an hour. Right, Yeah, So like, how do like
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: do you actually keep your heart rate under control, meaning
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: through methodology or does it just mean that you just
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: hope your heart you just hope your heart rate stays normal.
- 1:00:39Speaker 2: Ah. I mean, I think it's probably more of a
- 1:00:41Speaker 2: mental gain than it is anything and so much of
- 1:00:46Speaker 2: you know, another thing that I think makes a guy
- 1:00:49Speaker 2: good versus great is the ones who can be most
- 1:00:52Speaker 2: comfortable in the uncomfortable parts of the racetrack or parts
- 1:00:57Speaker 2: of a corner. There's always a you know, anywhere you
- 1:00:59Speaker 2: go any racetrack on any given weekend, there's going to
- 1:01:02Speaker 2: be a part of a racetrack that is the most
- 1:01:06Speaker 2: uncomfortable place like that that that is going to be
- 1:01:08Speaker 2: a thing regardless of where you're at and what you're doing.
- 1:01:10Speaker 2: And typically the guys that are least bothered by that
- 1:01:15Speaker 2: are going to excel, you know, the most. And you know,
- 1:01:19Speaker 2: I think having your heart rate or control and being
- 1:01:22Speaker 2: comfortable in whatever that environment or that challenge is that
- 1:01:26Speaker 2: weekend is just setting yourself, you know, setting yourself up
- 1:01:30Speaker 2: better for success because you know you're comfortable in those positions,
- 1:01:35Speaker 2: and I think that makes a big difference. What about
- 1:01:38Speaker 2: the track that makes it uncomfortable? What about it? Yeah,
- 1:01:42Speaker 2: like you said, there's like a portion, there's typically a portion.
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: What is it?
- 1:01:46Speaker 2: I would say, generally speaking, most of the time it's
- 1:01:49Speaker 2: on corner entry. You know, corner entry typically is the
- 1:01:52Speaker 2: most uncomfortable part of the track because you're going the
- 1:01:56Speaker 2: fastest as you're going to go at the end of
- 1:01:59Speaker 2: the straight way, and typically you go through a transitional
- 1:02:03Speaker 2: point on track where you go from a flat surface
- 1:02:07Speaker 2: to a bank surface. But you've got to get there
- 1:02:09Speaker 2: and you've got to start your turn, you know, somewhere
- 1:02:12Speaker 2: and all that. So you know, you trying to push
- 1:02:18Speaker 2: the limits of the tires, whether you know you're right
- 1:02:21Speaker 2: front tire, the right rear tire, whatever limitation you're trying
- 1:02:24Speaker 2: to push up to the edge of U is going
- 1:02:28Speaker 2: to be exposed the most in that spot just because
- 1:02:31Speaker 2: of the lack of banking and the speed you're carrying
- 1:02:34Speaker 2: at that point.
- 1:02:35Speaker 5: Gotcha, do you think that relates to hunting as far
- 1:02:41Speaker 5: as like being comfortable in the uncomfortable as far as
- 1:02:45Speaker 5: when you're out way out in the back country, are
- 1:02:47Speaker 5: you comfortable in that environment or is it trying to
- 1:02:51Speaker 5: adjust to No.
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: That's I think that's in some situations that's huge. But
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: there's also it takes a ton of funy because if
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: you talk to guys that I mean, this isn't me.
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: You talk to guys that are really into uh bowhunting
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: white tails, and they'll go in November and they'll sit
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: strapped to a tree from the time it gets well
- 1:03:24Speaker 1: thirty forty minutes before it gets light out to the
- 1:03:27Speaker 1: time it gets dark. Right, it's maddening. It's maddening. It's
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: not like uncomfortable like you imagine, like climbing up a
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: never ending hill is uncomfortable, but it's like not, you
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: have to be extremely dedicated to do that. Yeah, it's
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: there's a mental game, right, it's just like you're just stuck.
- 1:03:51Speaker 2: What if you're like taking a piss, Taking a piss.
- 1:03:53Speaker 1: Is hard, it's hard to eat, and like it's it's
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: not hard like yeah, it's not like you're doing a
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: bunch of bench presses, but it's hard, Like it's just mentally,
- 1:04:03Speaker 1: there's there's so many things like that where you guys
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: get into something and it just or another one be
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: people that are really like disciplined about duck hunting, you know,
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: And it sounds crazy, but it's like you're up at
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: three in the morning and you're up at three in
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: the morning. You're up at three in the morning, you're
- 1:04:20Speaker 1: up with three in the morning. Like anyone with any
- 1:04:22Speaker 1: obsession pushes it to where it gets where it pushes
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: it to where it's it's kind of like lunacy, and
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: just like they push it to where it becomes just uncomfortable,
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: you know. And then there's all the other stuff like
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: cold and all that. But yeah, people do things. We
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: do this, We do this moose hunt, which is almost
- 1:04:47Speaker 1: like like mentally physically you're not doing anything, but to
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: sit in the same spot for ten days, that'd be tough.
- 1:04:57Speaker 2: That's hoping tough, and see see pretty much nothing.
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: Some days you see like you sit there, you go down.
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: It's a twelve hour, thirteen hour sit in some days
- 1:05:08Speaker 1: in twelve thirteen hours you don't see any four legged
- 1:05:10Speaker 1: animals and you you every twenty thirty minutes you call
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: make a moose noise, and you're like, yeah, man, on
- 1:05:19Speaker 1: day nine, day ten, maybe one's gonna come out of that,
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: one's gonna come out of the woods. So being like,
- 1:05:25Speaker 1: is it really that hard to sit? Yeah, dude, it is.
- 1:05:31Speaker 2: But I like along the same lines, like if you're
- 1:05:34Speaker 2: tracking down a bear, like and I guess, is there
- 1:05:39Speaker 2: any point and maybe this is where you were going
- 1:05:41Speaker 2: with it, but like whether it be concern of coming
- 1:05:47Speaker 2: up on another animal or if you're trying to intercept
- 1:05:50Speaker 2: the path that an animal is going on, you know,
- 1:05:53Speaker 2: like a calmness or a sense of I don't know,
- 1:05:59Speaker 2: like any discomfort in doing that that would be important
- 1:06:02Speaker 2: of trying to mentally stay locked in through or.
- 1:06:06Speaker 1: I think that the guys that are really good, Well,
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: there's one thing that relates more to the my initial
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: interpretation of like comfortable being uncomfortable is is just putting
- 1:06:20Speaker 1: one foot in front of the other. That we walked
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: a couple miles a day, right, Like we'll picture that
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: you walked five times further, six times further. Like there's
- 1:06:32Speaker 1: a point at which like just one foot in front
- 1:06:34Speaker 1: of the other. There's some things where that becomes very hard,
- 1:06:37Speaker 1: and it really makes it that there's certain kinds of activities,
- 1:06:41Speaker 1: there's certain kind of hunts that most people and I mean, like,
- 1:06:44Speaker 1: like most people, the vast majority of people, even the
- 1:06:50Speaker 1: ones that that that, like, the vast majority of people
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: that would want to cannot physically do that. Right. Most
- 1:06:59Speaker 1: people look at like like going on a mountain goat
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: hount or going on a doll sheep hount or whatever.
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: Like most people and most of the people that would
- 1:07:07Speaker 1: want to do that can't do that. It's just physically
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: too demanding. There is a thing with guys that are
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: really good is yeah, just not being excitable. And and
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: there's like there's a huge there's a huge safety element.
- 1:07:25Speaker 1: Like I can't stand when people I can't stand being
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: around people that are excitable when something happens, Like there's
- 1:07:34Speaker 1: water coming into the boat.
- 1:07:36Speaker 2: Right, obviously there's water in the boat.
- 1:07:39Speaker 1: Yeah, it's like I would prefer it to be hey,
- 1:07:44Speaker 1: there's water coming into the boat like like but like
- 1:07:49Speaker 1: the flippy hoity, like I hate when people like people
- 1:07:52Speaker 1: that are That's one of the things I tell my
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: kids all the time is I'm just like pounding in
- 1:07:59Speaker 1: like just don't don't be excitable. Just calm down, slow down,
- 1:08:05Speaker 1: think about it. When something happens the other day I
- 1:08:08Speaker 1: left a handtowel on the burner that caught on fire.
- 1:08:11Speaker 1: My daughter like freaked out for a second, and I
- 1:08:14Speaker 1: put it out and then she said I she was bummed.
- 1:08:18Speaker 1: She's like, I should just put it out. I'm like, yeah,
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: it's cool. I'm glad you recognize that you can start
- 1:08:22Speaker 1: doing that at home. You should just calmly. You should
- 1:08:27Speaker 1: have calmly put it out. But she recognized it. And
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: that's not like, that's not specific to that's not even
- 1:08:36Speaker 1: a specific to like hunting, fishing. It's specific to outdoor.
- 1:08:42Speaker 1: And I'm sure there's other versions too, like military versions,
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: fire stuff whatever. But like you find it with about
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: mountaineers earlier, you know, like like guys that get into
- 1:08:52Speaker 1: the crazy stuff with mountains, rock climbers, whatever, Like they
- 1:08:59Speaker 1: get a uh, they just get very unexcitable and very chill.
- 1:09:07Speaker 1: And I think that if you do a lot of
- 1:09:08Speaker 1: outdoor pursuits where you're in situations like we spend a
- 1:09:13Speaker 1: lot of time in big water in small boats, you know,
- 1:09:17Speaker 1: and it's like it breeds, it breeds in you, like
- 1:09:22Speaker 1: just just being calm. You know. Pilots have like a
- 1:09:27Speaker 1: picture if you had a panicky pilot, you know.
- 1:09:32Speaker 2: One like that.
- 1:09:32Speaker 1: No, you listen to those. You listen to those like
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: the recordings, black box recordings. The guys that are going down,
- 1:09:40Speaker 1: they're not screaming, and you know what I mean a
- 1:09:44Speaker 1: lot of them to the very end are calmly talking
- 1:09:47Speaker 1: about the problem.
- 1:09:48Speaker 2: Trying to figure it out.
- 1:09:50Speaker 1: Yeah, and it's like that dude's gonna die and he
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: knows it, but still he's like, we're gonna check this,
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: we're checking out shot on this, trying to you know, like,
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: I don't know where you get that from. I think
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: that you. I do know where you get it from. Uh,
- 1:10:05Speaker 1: there's probably people that are born with it, and then
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: there's probably there and there's people that develop it.
- 1:10:10Speaker 2: And I mean you're teaching your kids that.
- 1:10:13Speaker 1: Yeah. Currently, So I can't stand hanging out with excitable.
- 1:10:16Speaker 2: People's nothing wrong with that.
- 1:10:18Speaker 1: In any way, Like I hate it like that kind
- 1:10:21Speaker 1: of like, oh my god, I might just stop doing it.
- 1:10:24Speaker 2: Chill.
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: It's a bear, you know, Hey, there's a bear over
- 1:10:29Speaker 1: he does a bear? Come perfect, We're gonna have to
- 1:10:32Speaker 1: deal with him in a minute.
- 1:10:39Speaker 2: What else?
- 1:10:43Speaker 1: I heard a rumor that these days that these days
- 1:10:49Speaker 1: it's ninety percent the car oh man, not this ten
- 1:10:55Speaker 1: percent the driver. The driver is an afterthought.
- 1:10:58Speaker 2: They're probably right.
- 1:10:59Speaker 1: Do you think about that?
- 1:11:01Speaker 2: They're probably right.
- 1:11:02Speaker 1: I said, it's it's a.
- 1:11:05Speaker 2: Car backing up. No, I don't think that.
- 1:11:11Speaker 5: I don't think that's exactly right.
- 1:11:12Speaker 3: What's what's the difference between like Chevy Ford Toyota Just
- 1:11:17Speaker 3: the motor.
- 1:11:18Speaker 2: The motor and and the bodies are a little different,
- 1:11:22Speaker 2: a little different, all very close now for the simple
- 1:11:29Speaker 2: reason that NASCAR creates the box of which you have
- 1:11:35Speaker 2: to live in, and you, you know, so if there's
- 1:11:40Speaker 2: a certain number of whatever it is that you have
- 1:11:43Speaker 2: to get to, you might add up a little differently
- 1:11:45Speaker 2: to get there, but you kind of end up in
- 1:11:47Speaker 2: the same place. So like, for instance, maybe the best
- 1:11:53Speaker 2: example I can give is like some engine, you know,
- 1:11:57Speaker 2: So if it's Chevy versus a four word, you know,
- 1:12:01Speaker 2: a Chevy in the power curve, they might both make
- 1:12:05Speaker 2: you know, whatever the number is six hundred and seventy
- 1:12:07Speaker 2: horse power or whatever they have us restricted to now,
- 1:12:11Speaker 2: but they might make a their power curve or torque
- 1:12:17Speaker 2: numbers might be different at seventy five hundred versus eighty
- 1:12:21Speaker 2: nine hundred. So you see what I mean, you kind
- 1:12:24Speaker 2: of end up in the same place, but you might
- 1:12:25Speaker 2: have a little bit of a different makeup to get
- 1:12:28Speaker 2: you there.
- 1:12:29Speaker 1: Yeah, I was surprised that when you get in there,
- 1:12:32Speaker 1: it's not like you have like a car.
- 1:12:35Speaker 2: No, that is an extreme, very popular misconception.
- 1:12:41Speaker 1: And yeah, I pictures you've got like a car. You
- 1:12:44Speaker 1: got like a mechanic that has a lot of secret
- 1:12:46Speaker 1: tricks that no one else knows.
- 1:12:50Speaker 2: Not as much anymore. But no, you don't have one car.
- 1:12:54Speaker 2: You have I think there's like seven I think seven
- 1:12:58Speaker 2: center sections are assigned to a car number a year,
- 1:13:04Speaker 2: and then you can kind of divide those up how
- 1:13:09Speaker 2: you want to and where you want to race them,
- 1:13:12Speaker 2: depending upon you know, like you might have a different
- 1:13:15Speaker 2: you might have your body configured a little different for
- 1:13:19Speaker 2: a speedway versus where you know that would be a
- 1:13:22Speaker 2: place that you would want to just have as much
- 1:13:25Speaker 2: drag off the car as you can get it, just
- 1:13:27Speaker 2: to go as fast and as straight line as possible.
- 1:13:31Speaker 2: Whereas if we go to say Kansas this weekend, and
- 1:13:36Speaker 2: we want to have more downforce on our car because
- 1:13:38Speaker 2: we want it to handle better. Well with downforce comes track,
- 1:13:42Speaker 2: So you might have that car configured a little differently
- 1:13:46Speaker 2: from aero perspective for Kansas versus Daytona. So you have
- 1:13:52Speaker 2: these different car builds that you would take to different racetracks,
- 1:13:56Speaker 2: and generally speaking, we don't take the same car to
- 1:13:59Speaker 2: the track two weeks in a row unless we just
- 1:14:02Speaker 2: really like a car and we ran really good with it,
- 1:14:04Speaker 2: and then they might turn around and go again. But
- 1:14:06Speaker 2: otherwise it's going to get a week off or two
- 1:14:09Speaker 2: weeks off, and they'll go and kind of remissage everything
- 1:14:13Speaker 2: and you put it back together. Do you run a
- 1:14:16Speaker 2: motor once three times three times? Ye, and then it's done?
- 1:14:20Speaker 2: Or do you rebuild it? Or they'll rebuild it. I
- 1:14:23Speaker 2: don't know exactly three races out of a motor. Three
- 1:14:26Speaker 2: races out of a motor, yeah, which is more than
- 1:14:28Speaker 2: it's ever been. Hell used to They they would have
- 1:14:32Speaker 2: a Friday practice motor, a qualifying motor, a Saturday practice motor,
- 1:14:36Speaker 2: and a race motor on Sunday and they rebuild all
- 1:14:38Speaker 2: of them for the next week. Geez, man, are you serious,
- 1:14:41Speaker 2: that's crazy.
- 1:14:43Speaker 1: Yeah. Now, I don't want to pry, but he's going to. Yeah. Well, no,
- 1:14:50Speaker 1: it doesn't need to be it doesn't need to be personal. Okay,
- 1:14:53Speaker 1: explain the economics of U explain the economics of being
- 1:14:56Speaker 1: a driver? Yeah, because it's not like you got to
- 1:14:59Speaker 1: go buy all the car that's your team. Yeah, what
- 1:15:02Speaker 1: are the economics of a driver? Just pick some random
- 1:15:05Speaker 1: ass driver his economics.
- 1:15:08Speaker 2: I don't know. The best way I can describe it
- 1:15:13Speaker 2: to you is basically, all drivers are private contractors to
- 1:15:21Speaker 2: whatever race team they work for. So if I work
- 1:15:25Speaker 2: for I work for Hendrick Motorsports. So I'm basically a
- 1:15:28Speaker 2: contractor of Hendrick Motorsports. You know, I work for them.
- 1:15:32Speaker 2: Rick is my boss and he pays me.
- 1:15:35Speaker 1: You're a contractor, so you don't get like health insurance
- 1:15:38Speaker 1: and stuff through them. You're a freelance dude.
- 1:15:41Speaker 2: Yeah, you're in charge of all that now, your contract
- 1:15:44Speaker 2: You know, you're not just a freelance dude. You know,
- 1:15:47Speaker 2: I'm very much employed by HMS. But you are responsible
- 1:15:51Speaker 2: for all the things you're talking about, whether like health
- 1:15:54Speaker 2: insurance and a sort of thing.
- 1:15:57Speaker 1: Is it hard to get insurance?
- 1:16:01Speaker 2: Not? Not really. No, I would say.
- 1:16:03Speaker 1: There's a market like do you skydive or whatever? Do
- 1:16:07Speaker 1: you like race? Yeah?
- 1:16:09Speaker 2: Well there are a lot of race car drivers, right
- 1:16:14Speaker 2: and you know, around the world in different forms of motorsports.
- 1:16:17Speaker 2: So there are companies out there that kind of specialize
- 1:16:20Speaker 2: in that.
- 1:16:21Speaker 1: Okay, so you sign a contract and how many years
- 1:16:24Speaker 1: is a normal contract.
- 1:16:26Speaker 2: Anywhere from probably.
- 1:16:30Speaker 1: Two to five, and then there's like some kind of
- 1:16:34Speaker 1: base component all winnings.
- 1:16:38Speaker 2: Uh no, they're they're well, it depends, and this is
- 1:16:41Speaker 2: where it could be different for whoever. Some guys could have.
- 1:16:45Speaker 2: You could have a base number. Some guys could have
- 1:16:50Speaker 2: could be totally percentage based on on the you know,
- 1:16:55Speaker 2: how the races go in the purse of of any
- 1:16:57Speaker 2: given race weekend, or you could even have a hybrid.
- 1:17:01Speaker 2: You could have a little bit of both. And I
- 1:17:03Speaker 2: don't think anybody's is really one and the same.
- 1:17:06Speaker 1: Got it. But then when you win, like your name's
- 1:17:11Speaker 1: attached to it, but the team wins. Yeah, like when
- 1:17:15Speaker 1: when they write the big winners check, they don't write
- 1:17:17Speaker 1: the winners check to the driver.
- 1:17:19Speaker 2: That's correct. Yeah, so the winners check would go to
- 1:17:21Speaker 2: the team because you know they're fielding the car. It's
- 1:17:24Speaker 2: their car, and you know it's their team, right, so
- 1:17:27Speaker 2: they the teams get paid, you know, for from the
- 1:17:31Speaker 2: purse from NASCAR for whatever the you know, the purses
- 1:17:34Speaker 2: or the winnings that we can.
- 1:17:37Speaker 1: And will you spend your whole career at one team
- 1:17:40Speaker 1: or not? You most guys spend their whole career at
- 1:17:42Speaker 1: one team.
- 1:17:44Speaker 2: I would say it's not super common to to do that.
- 1:17:49Speaker 2: I mean, I've seen a lot of people, you know,
- 1:17:51Speaker 2: jump around over the years, even guys that you wouldn't
- 1:17:53Speaker 2: have expected to jump around and do something different. Me personally,
- 1:17:58Speaker 2: I would love to spend my career with one team.
- 1:18:00Speaker 2: I've been been at it with him for ten years now,
- 1:18:04Speaker 2: so I hope I don't have to, you know, go
- 1:18:07Speaker 2: anywhere else or do anything else for sure.
- 1:18:10Speaker 1: And now you guys are like when you retire, you
- 1:18:14Speaker 1: might retire at forty definitely by fifty.
- 1:18:16Speaker 2: Right, I would hope, And then you just kick it.
- 1:18:21Speaker 1: You just fish.
- 1:18:23Speaker 2: Maybe maybe it depends. It depends on the guy, right, Like,
- 1:18:29Speaker 2: I don't know that I could. I don't know that
- 1:18:32Speaker 2: I could fish every day, Like I think I would
- 1:18:34Speaker 2: probably still want something to do, like some sort of challenge.
- 1:18:38Speaker 1: Or turkey hunt or that. But you know what I mean,
- 1:18:44Speaker 1: I do, but I don't I could sew happily like
- 1:18:50Speaker 1: I could so happily just screw around all day every
- 1:18:52Speaker 1: day and maybe if I could pull my kids out
- 1:18:54Speaker 1: of school, if they didn't have to go to school,
- 1:18:57Speaker 1: I would very very happily every day just screw around
- 1:19:01Speaker 1: the how old are you fifty one?
- 1:19:04Speaker 2: I see, I'm not there yet. I don't know. Yeah,
- 1:19:06Speaker 2: maybe maybe I.
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: Could have very happily just screwed around all the time.
- 1:19:11Speaker 1: And maybe so Yeah to me, man, I picture like
- 1:19:14Speaker 1: if I could somehow if they didn't have like laws
- 1:19:16Speaker 1: about kids going to school, and then stut the deal
- 1:19:20Speaker 1: with my wife too, because she likes them to be
- 1:19:21Speaker 1: in school. But I imagine that you'd like your kids wouldn't
- 1:19:26Speaker 1: be in school and you would just hunt and.
- 1:19:28Speaker 2: Fish, I mean, and that could work well.
- 1:19:32Speaker 1: Me run into financial issues and stuff, you.
- 1:19:34Speaker 2: Know, as long as you can, as long as you
- 1:19:36Speaker 2: can sponsor it, it could work. Yeah.
- 1:19:39Speaker 1: Yeah, maybe I'm wrong. My wife's not working for a
- 1:19:43Speaker 1: while right now, and she's kind of feeling the itch.
- 1:19:46Speaker 2: He wants to work.
- 1:19:47Speaker 1: She wonders about it. She worked her whole life. She
- 1:19:50Speaker 1: just only took a little break.
- 1:19:51Speaker 2: She's taking a little break, we'll tell her.
- 1:19:53Speaker 1: And during her break, she's kind of like weighing this
- 1:19:57Speaker 1: whole thing out, like do you really like what do
- 1:20:01Speaker 1: you do you know it's.
- 1:20:02Speaker 2: Nice she's getting bored.
- 1:20:03Speaker 1: No, she just is.
- 1:20:05Speaker 2: She's considering what exactly what you're saying, And.
- 1:20:09Speaker 1: Yeah, is this you know, do you get comfortable in this?
- 1:20:14Speaker 1: Do you then go and do a new thing. She's
- 1:20:16Speaker 1: just trying to figure out what it feels like.
- 1:20:18Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, if she turkey hunted and fished, it'd
- 1:20:21Speaker 3: be probably different.
- 1:20:22Speaker 1: See that's her problem, dude. Yeah, she like, that's a problem.
- 1:20:27Speaker 1: She likes a lot of stupid stuff. I was like,
- 1:20:30Speaker 1: if you didn't like, I tell her if the things
- 1:20:32Speaker 1: you didn't like, the things you like are so stupid,
- 1:20:35Speaker 1: that's why you're having this struggle. If I was in
- 1:20:38Speaker 1: your situation, I'd be stuff and I'd be quite happy
- 1:20:41Speaker 1: and brave. So anything else you want to ask about
- 1:20:46Speaker 1: share about.
- 1:20:49Speaker 2: I don't think so, not unless you, I don't know,
- 1:20:52Speaker 2: have anything else you want to cover.
- 1:20:54Speaker 1: No, hanging out with you has totally changed my like
- 1:20:59Speaker 1: my reception of uh of watching that activity.
- 1:21:05Speaker 2: That's good. Yeah, I mean I think about.
- 1:21:07Speaker 1: Look at all those people with it death wish.
- 1:21:10Speaker 2: Yeah. No, I mean I think there's a lot that
- 1:21:14Speaker 2: is probably misunderstood about you know, what we do and yeah,
- 1:21:22Speaker 2: just so much about the discipline that is never conveyed
- 1:21:27Speaker 2: and it's really hard to understand. And I totally get that.
- 1:21:30Speaker 2: And because, like we were talking earlier, you can't go
- 1:21:35Speaker 2: to the sporting good store and buy a race car,
- 1:21:38Speaker 2: you know, and that's so because of that, it's a
- 1:21:41Speaker 2: hard thing to explain. And it kind of is a
- 1:21:43Speaker 2: niche sport. You you really have to dive into it
- 1:21:47Speaker 2: and be willing to learn about it, you know, in
- 1:21:49Speaker 2: order to get the full appreciation for it.
- 1:21:53Speaker 1: Yeah, you're not going to stumble into it, right, Yeah.
- 1:21:58Speaker 1: One last thing I do I keep coming around to
- 1:22:01Speaker 1: the to the the hazards of it. What percent of
- 1:22:08Speaker 1: like roughly what percent of of racers have like a
- 1:22:13Speaker 1: career ending injury or their career ends because of injury
- 1:22:18Speaker 1: or their career ends because of of of a fatality?
- 1:22:21Speaker 1: Is it significant?
- 1:22:24Speaker 2: I mean, obviously as time has gone on, I would
- 1:22:27Speaker 2: say in all forms of motorsports, the percentage of both
- 1:22:31Speaker 2: of those has decreased quite a lot over the years,
- 1:22:36Speaker 2: but still not impossible for sure. Most recently, Kurt Busch,
- 1:22:42Speaker 2: I would say, was a guy that am I thinking, right, Yeah,
- 1:22:45Speaker 2: I'd have to be Kurt that had a career ending
- 1:22:49Speaker 2: head injury, you know, that sidelined him for what he
- 1:22:56Speaker 2: thought was going to be a brief period of time
- 1:22:58Speaker 2: and basically never recovered. You know, from a concussion standpoint,
- 1:23:03Speaker 2: he might be okay now, you know, but that had
- 1:23:06Speaker 2: been you know, I think some years had passed by,
- 1:23:09Speaker 2: so things are a lot safer, you know, today than
- 1:23:14Speaker 2: they were fifteen years ago or something. But you know,
- 1:23:20Speaker 2: certainly that stuff is never out of the question, you know.
- 1:23:24Speaker 2: I think we all kind of understand the risk and
- 1:23:27Speaker 2: kind of what's involved in what we do, and it's
- 1:23:30Speaker 2: never impossible.
- 1:23:32Speaker 1: How dumb were the questions I asked you compared to
- 1:23:35Speaker 1: when you do post race.
- 1:23:36Speaker 2: Interviews, You're they weren't dumb. I didn't think your questions
- 1:23:44Speaker 2: were dumb, but also too like you're learning about something
- 1:23:49Speaker 2: you don't know anything about, whereas like post race interviews,
- 1:23:54Speaker 2: you're being asked by people who literally watch it every weekend.
- 1:23:58Speaker 1: So yeah, I've watched you do post race interviews, and
- 1:24:00Speaker 1: I've watched, Uh, you just you kind of keep it,
- 1:24:06Speaker 1: you keep it tight.
- 1:24:07Speaker 2: Yeah, I try to. Yeah, I try to. You know,
- 1:24:11Speaker 2: it's yeah, it and also to so much of it
- 1:24:14Speaker 2: depends on like how your day went, and they like
- 1:24:17Speaker 2: to ask about conflicts on the track. Yeah, that's their
- 1:24:20Speaker 2: favorite thing to talk about. You know, it's just conflicts
- 1:24:24Speaker 2: because that gets some of the most views and just don't.
- 1:24:27Speaker 1: Take the base.
- 1:24:28Speaker 2: They like when you guys get out and fighting. They
- 1:24:30Speaker 2: love it. Yeah, they love it, but then they want
- 1:24:33Speaker 2: to find you for it. But they're going to advertise
- 1:24:36Speaker 2: that they love it. Yeah.
- 1:24:38Speaker 1: You know. Uh, that's funny because my daughter plays hockey
- 1:24:42Speaker 1: and they don't you know, they're not allowed to fight yet.
- 1:24:43Speaker 2: Yeah, at what age do you?
- 1:24:45Speaker 1: I don't know what he's just they're supposed to start fighting.
- 1:24:47Speaker 1: But I feel in my heart, I'm like, I wish
- 1:24:51Speaker 1: she would hit that kid. You know, it breeds it,
- 1:24:54Speaker 1: you know what I mean, because it's boys and girls
- 1:24:57Speaker 1: mixed together. So when a boy roughser I'm always sticking
- 1:25:02Speaker 1: in my head like I wish you'd clobber that boy.
- 1:25:04Speaker 2: Boy. Yeah. How often do you run into conflict on
- 1:25:08Speaker 2: the track? I mean it just depends, like you might
- 1:25:11Speaker 2: get you might go a season where you don't have
- 1:25:14Speaker 2: any conflicts, and then you might go a season where
- 1:25:16Speaker 2: you have you know, two or three or something like
- 1:25:20Speaker 2: when I say two or three, I mean like major ones. Yeah,
- 1:25:25Speaker 2: you're gonna have minor conflicts on track, you know, throughout
- 1:25:28Speaker 2: a year, probably a handful, you know, average on average,
- 1:25:33Speaker 2: I would say, but it just depends like it can go.
- 1:25:37Speaker 2: It can go either way. Gotcha.
- 1:25:39Speaker 1: You think you'd come back and fish when it's better fishing.
- 1:25:42Speaker 2: I really would like to.
- 1:25:43Speaker 1: I sure owe it to you. I feel like you
- 1:25:45Speaker 1: did good.
- 1:25:46Speaker 2: I mean, did the best you could I thought. I
- 1:25:47Speaker 2: mean you you put me on fish and I failed.
- 1:25:50Speaker 2: That's on me.
- 1:25:51Speaker 1: March cold can be real good, depending on a handful
- 1:25:57Speaker 1: of things. Uh, Late June, July can be real good.
- 1:26:05Speaker 1: August get a little nasty and hot. Yeah, the fall
- 1:26:09Speaker 1: I don't fish. You don't know I don't fish. Yeah,
- 1:26:14Speaker 1: I'm gonna get a signed because I don't fish in
- 1:26:16Speaker 1: the fall.
- 1:26:18Speaker 2: It's fair.
- 1:26:20Speaker 1: Someone told me about it. They have a rule no
- 1:26:22Speaker 1: talking about fishing during hunting season. So that's the months
- 1:26:25Speaker 1: you gotta come back. Come back in late June.
- 1:26:27Speaker 2: Late june's the month.
- 1:26:28Speaker 1: Yeah, we'll go and fish the high country.
- 1:26:30Speaker 2: I'd love to, I really would, you.
- 1:26:32Speaker 1: Know, I'd love to take you out and uh and
- 1:26:35Speaker 1: and for real, you know, yeah, catching.
- 1:26:38Speaker 2: Them more catching than fishing is always catching them.
- 1:26:41Speaker 1: Now that you're all trained up.
- 1:26:43Speaker 2: I'm ready to get well.
- 1:26:44Speaker 1: Thanks for coming on the show man and listen.
- 1:26:46Speaker 2: Really appreciate everybody for having us, for taking us out today.
- 1:26:50Speaker 2: I know you know there was some work involved in all.
- 1:26:52Speaker 1: That, so thank you. Fun. It was a lot of fun.
- 1:26:54Speaker 2: Yeah, we we appreciated it. I had fun. I know
- 1:26:56Speaker 2: we didn't catch anything, but it was still good to
- 1:26:59Speaker 2: get outside and enjoy what you guys have out here.
- 1:27:02Speaker 2: So thank you.
- 1:27:03Speaker 1: And then, uh, people hang out with are going to
- 1:27:05Speaker 1: forever for the rest of life. Be annoyed when I
- 1:27:08Speaker 1: talk about what really goes on with race car drivers
- 1:27:18Speaker 1: subject matter. It's not like that. It's not like that.
- 1:27:20Speaker 1: It's it's fun. Listen.
- 1:27:22Speaker 2: You can tell them whatever you want.
