- 0:06Speaker 1: Hey folks, a warm welcome to the Irish Theaters podcast.
- 0:09Speaker 1: The NFL Draft is next week. Michael McQuaid here with
- 0:12Speaker 1: a special edition of the podcast. We're going to have
- 0:14Speaker 1: some snippets from Jimmy English who was at the Steelers
- 0:17Speaker 1: Kicking Clinic in Dublin. Delighted to be joined by two
- 0:20Speaker 1: guys if used to play for the Staters. We've got
- 0:22Speaker 1: Sean Sweezen and Jordan Barry. Guys. First off, falta, as
- 0:26Speaker 1: we said, welcome to Ireland. How are we doing good?
- 0:29Speaker 2: Yeah, fantastic, unbelievable experience and just for full disclosure, I'm
- 0:35Speaker 2: having a Guinness as we speak.
- 0:37Speaker 1: Well, look, it's great to have you here and great
- 0:39Speaker 1: to see the continued commitment from the Staters to the
- 0:41Speaker 1: island of Ireland. And that really was led bear this
- 0:45Speaker 1: week in a good way with the kick with the
- 0:47Speaker 1: Kicking Clinic, which we'll talk about in a few moments
- 0:49Speaker 1: before we do that. Starting with yourself, Sean, have you
- 0:52Speaker 1: any ties to the island of Ireland? Have you ever
- 0:54Speaker 1: been here before? Any family relations.
- 0:56Speaker 2: Or first go out being in Ireland? And what an
- 1:00Speaker 2: unbelievable experience.
- 1:02Speaker 1: It's great. Hasn't met every expectations of.
- 1:04Speaker 2: Our everything, everything, and you just are a cherry on top.
- 1:08Speaker 1: Fank Smithy, Jordan, what do you recommit first time here?
- 1:13Speaker 3: Yes, this is my first time here. Probably got a
- 1:15Speaker 3: few distant relatives that were Irish, grew up playing Australian football,
- 1:18Speaker 3: which against very similar Irish football. But other than that, yeah,
- 1:21Speaker 3: it's been great.
- 1:22Speaker 1: I love it. And we'll talk about the clinic, which
- 1:26Speaker 1: actually took place today at the time we're recording it
- 1:27Speaker 1: in a little second. I believe you guys got in Jordan.
- 1:30Speaker 1: I believe you get in. A couple of days earlier,
- 1:32Speaker 1: you went to Crook Park for the first time. How
- 1:34Speaker 1: did you find that stadium?
- 1:36Speaker 3: Yeah, now it's a really cool stadium. Definitely run me
- 1:39Speaker 3: a lot of the mcg back in Australia, just so
- 1:42Speaker 3: those big towering stands, you know, it's pit eighty something
- 1:44Speaker 3: thousand in there. Yeah, it's also first time watching Irish
- 1:47Speaker 3: football in person, so it's really exciting to see that
- 1:50Speaker 3: guys put on a good game. First half it's pretty good,
- 1:53Speaker 3: but yeah, Dublin run away with it in the second,
- 1:55Speaker 3: so that's pretty cool.
- 1:56Speaker 1: These thattmosphere dolls get even better in the Common summer months.
- 2:00Speaker 1: Bit like Ozzie Rules in that sense, it gets bigger
- 2:02Speaker 1: and bigger and bigger each week. Sean rock Rovers and Leinster.
- 2:05Speaker 1: Sean and I have to say, I was looking on
- 2:07Speaker 1: my phone and I've seen the Steelers art in the
- 2:09Speaker 1: count has just been getting busier and busier. How did
- 2:11Speaker 1: you find going there and just meeting the guys. I've
- 2:14Speaker 1: seen you Gothotten dif few players as well.
- 2:17Speaker 2: The beauty of sports is no matter the country you're in,
- 2:22Speaker 2: those that have success, the culture is there and that
- 2:27Speaker 2: was very apparent in both clubs. They were very welcoming.
- 2:31Speaker 2: I'd like to try to convert some of those boys
- 2:33Speaker 2: to kick a football. I think they could do it.
- 2:37Speaker 1: Awesome, awesome, Well, there was a youth clinic today. At
- 2:40Speaker 1: the time of recording, I was that even better. A
- 2:42Speaker 1: youth clinic took place this week with the Pittsburgh Steters,
- 2:45Speaker 1: and you know, twenty five kids from around the Ireland
- 2:48Speaker 1: took part along with some of the ipp players on
- 2:51Speaker 1: different athletes. There was kickoffs outdoors and also field goals
- 2:55Speaker 1: and sudden death indoors. We've seen guys like Ry Began,
- 2:58Speaker 1: Mark Jackson, Darr Leader take part and the Staters also
- 3:01Speaker 1: shipped over a number of youth saide footballs and eighteen
- 3:05Speaker 1: K balls used by NFL players at the Sport Ireland
- 3:08Speaker 1: campus and Jordan, first off, that Sport Island campus is
- 3:12Speaker 1: really synonymous with sport in this island. How did you
- 3:15Speaker 1: find that and how did you find the whole experience
- 3:17Speaker 1: at the kicking clinic for the Steelers.
- 3:19Speaker 3: Yeah, it's an absolutely fantastic facility that we got to
- 3:21Speaker 3: use today. Yeah, it worked out really well for us.
- 3:24Speaker 3: Pretty windy though early on and so I made it
- 3:26Speaker 3: tough for the guys out there punning and kicking off.
- 3:28Speaker 3: But yeah, that grass was absolutely fantastic. And then be
- 3:30Speaker 3: able to go inside for the field goals and work
- 3:32Speaker 3: with the young kids. It was absolutely phenomenal facility.
- 3:36Speaker 1: Sean, you told me just before we hit the record
- 3:38Speaker 1: in the spot and just about how much ideolicus meant
- 3:40Speaker 1: to you can you tell people listening to this podcast,
- 3:42Speaker 1: but how spacial it was because to see young people,
- 3:46Speaker 1: kids and after lease as well come together for something
- 3:48Speaker 1: like this on the Island of Ireland, I think is
- 3:50Speaker 1: pretty special.
- 3:51Speaker 2: There's real value in and I enjoy working with professional
- 3:55Speaker 2: level athletes, but the reality is we're the mad is
- 4:00Speaker 2: that the power of sport is within our youth and
- 4:03Speaker 2: the way that we can unite and connect and grow
- 4:06Speaker 2: the love of a game and unite communities and haveing
- 4:12Speaker 2: those opportunities. Whether I'm back in Canada or the United
- 4:15Speaker 2: States and now in Ireland with a group of young lads,
- 4:23Speaker 2: I think I said that correct. You did from throughout
- 4:26Speaker 2: the country come together, unite within an hour and run
- 4:31Speaker 2: team cheers together and help teach them the game and
- 4:35Speaker 2: put a smile on their face. I showed you that
- 4:37Speaker 2: picture of that group as we did one two tree
- 4:41Speaker 2: a breakdown of the Steelers, and like that, that is
- 4:44Speaker 2: a moment, like genuinely that I'll probably never forget. I
- 4:47Speaker 2: hope I'll never forget. Like that's real and it's very tangible.
- 4:53Speaker 2: In moments like that oftentimes are very hard to create
- 4:57Speaker 2: without sport, you know. And being here now on behalf
- 5:01Speaker 2: of the Pittsburgh Steelers and be able to bring that
- 5:03Speaker 2: to some of the youth from the country, it was
- 5:05Speaker 2: a very special moment.
- 5:07Speaker 1: For people that are not aware. Sean, you have a
- 5:10Speaker 1: Canadian background, Jordan, You've an Australian background. I'd love to
- 5:14Speaker 1: hear of this from the Buffy is how impressed. Were
- 5:16Speaker 1: you with the talent at both the kicking and ponting
- 5:18Speaker 1: musician in Ireland because it's dominated headlines here over the
- 5:22Speaker 1: last few weeks.
- 5:23Speaker 3: Yeah, the guys have got an absolutely the phenomenal base
- 5:26Speaker 3: to start working with. Obviously, the transition into American FOOTBA
- 5:29Speaker 3: there's gonna be work to do, but from a starting
- 5:31Speaker 3: point for some of these guys, you know, absolutely top level,
- 5:33Speaker 3: really strong legs, they able to make great contact with
- 5:36Speaker 3: the ball, great athletes. Yeah, very impressive to see. You know,
- 5:40Speaker 3: some of these guys coming out and wanted to make
- 5:41Speaker 3: that transition across You know, it's going to take time
- 5:44Speaker 3: to really hone it in and become one of the
- 5:46Speaker 3: best in the world to get one of those NFL jobs,
- 5:48Speaker 3: but yeah, they've definitely got the potential to really make
- 5:50Speaker 3: it happen.
- 5:51Speaker 1: We were talking off of off Era a few moments,
- 5:55Speaker 1: like a little bite high similar Assie Rules is to
- 5:58Speaker 1: the GEA. Did you find it from sort of watching
- 6:01Speaker 1: it in quil Park on some there, but then also
- 6:03Speaker 1: seeing the guys like Rory Bag and Mark Jackson goalkeepers
- 6:07Speaker 1: in their sport with that whole transition to the NFL,
- 6:10Speaker 1: it is it's a little similar to Ozzie Reels and
- 6:12Speaker 1: that sounds, isn't it.
- 6:14Speaker 3: Yeah, So the position that these guys are in, it
- 6:16Speaker 3: is very similar position I was in when I was
- 6:17Speaker 3: first trying to make the transition across into college football.
- 6:22Speaker 3: You know, they've got to make that adjustment from the
- 6:24Speaker 3: swing pattern they've got using an Irish football or for me,
- 6:27Speaker 3: an Australian ball, and then really narrow it down, keep
- 6:30Speaker 3: it short and in tight because in American fole you
- 6:33Speaker 3: don't have the space to run with the ball. You
- 6:34Speaker 3: can't take five, six, seven steps when you get a puntet,
- 6:36Speaker 3: so you got to keep it all nice and tired
- 6:38Speaker 3: on two steps. So watching these guys make that transition,
- 6:40Speaker 3: I was yeah, very yeah, similar to what I did,
- 6:43Speaker 3: and it's pretty neat. Growing up in Australia, I had
- 6:46Speaker 3: dreams of playing professional Australian football. Did that right through
- 6:48Speaker 3: high school. It did my best, but as I was
- 6:51Speaker 3: getting through to the end of high school, realized that
- 6:53Speaker 3: wasn't going to be for me. And that's when I
- 6:55Speaker 3: started researching where the options are out there, whether it
- 6:57Speaker 3: was you know, just regular degrees college or trying to
- 7:01Speaker 3: find out options for sport. And that's when I came
- 7:03Speaker 3: across American football and all the opportunities that it provides
- 7:06Speaker 3: through college football. So you know, when you're in high
- 7:09Speaker 3: school and you reading about getting all your school paid for,
- 7:11Speaker 3: accommodation paid for, and food. So chased after the dream
- 7:14Speaker 3: and it was lucky enough to get a spot at
- 7:16Speaker 3: Eastern Kentucky and made that transition across from Australian football
- 7:19Speaker 3: and American and from there just keep working and pushing
- 7:23Speaker 3: along and eventually managed to get that opportunity with Pittsburgh.
- 7:26Speaker 1: It's been great to see and long me I continue
- 7:28Speaker 1: and longly odd people of players from Australia through the
- 7:31Speaker 1: same I've seen it in multiple had lays this week,
- 7:33Speaker 1: so hopefully I continues as well. As Sean, you've you've
- 7:36Speaker 1: you've a really interested in background. Obviously been from Canada,
- 7:39Speaker 1: but you had a different men's sport in hockey. Can
- 7:42Speaker 1: you tell us a bit about your background as well
- 7:44Speaker 1: and just how you got into football.
- 7:45Speaker 2: Sure, and it was fun to be able to share
- 7:48Speaker 2: with the guys today that not every journey has to
- 7:53Speaker 2: be clear and definitive. I grew up in Canada. I
- 7:57Speaker 2: grew up as a hockey player and he know you
- 8:00Speaker 2: if you can kick, you can kick, and so to
- 8:04Speaker 2: hear some of the pop on on some of the
- 8:07Speaker 2: balls today from the guys, that's real And it doesn't
- 8:10Speaker 2: matter what sports you grew up in. And now the
- 8:14Speaker 2: transition in the the challenge is can they continue to
- 8:19Speaker 2: refine their skill set to play at the very highest
- 8:23Speaker 2: level to be one I'm thirty two, you know that
- 8:25Speaker 2: is that is the challenge that's real for Irish and
- 8:30Speaker 2: American Canadian athletes alike, you know, but the opportunity is there,
- 8:38Speaker 2: and Jordan and I have you know, fortunately we've been
- 8:42Speaker 2: able to do it and being able to come over
- 8:45Speaker 2: here and connect and hopefully in some small way have
- 8:49Speaker 2: have helped them on their journey. It's special and it's
- 8:54Speaker 2: exciting and I'm excited for for those guys, and in
- 8:58Speaker 2: particular some of them are very really displayed some high
- 9:02Speaker 2: level talent and it'll be interesting to see where their
- 9:04Speaker 2: journey takes them.
- 9:05Speaker 1: How easy show did you find that the transition from
- 9:07Speaker 1: hockey to football.
- 9:09Speaker 2: Entirely different sports, but a lot of similarities when it
- 9:13Speaker 2: comes to team play and the reliance pron one another
- 9:17Speaker 2: to achieve a common goal. You know, I think that
- 9:21Speaker 2: is transfers amongst all all sports, and so the transition.
- 9:29Speaker 2: The unique part is kicking is very absolute, and it
- 9:33Speaker 2: is very on an island, and there's nowhere to hide
- 9:38Speaker 2: there and you're certainly reliant, extremely reliant. You can't do
- 9:41Speaker 2: it without the offensive and we went through that with
- 9:43Speaker 2: the youth today. We set up an offensive line and
- 9:46Speaker 2: the ends in the wings, in the holder, and you
- 9:52Speaker 2: can't do it alone. But the reality is when it
- 9:54Speaker 2: comes off your foot, it is your responsibility and there's
- 9:58Speaker 2: a very absolute nature there that is not the right
- 10:01Speaker 2: fit for everyone. And that's where we talk about execution
- 10:04Speaker 2: under pressure, and we put the players, the older ones
- 10:08Speaker 2: today through some of those moments so they could tried
- 10:12Speaker 2: to help them, and then we chatted more about the
- 10:16Speaker 2: mindset of what can help to separate them from other
- 10:21Speaker 2: talented legs.
- 10:22Speaker 1: It's not your first time outside of North America. You
- 10:25Speaker 1: played in the game in Wembley in twenty thirteen. How
- 10:28Speaker 1: did you find that. Obviously, Wembley is a historic stadium
- 10:30Speaker 1: and we'll talk in a bit about maybe Ireland topping
- 10:32Speaker 1: in the future, but to plan London is a unique experience,
- 10:36Speaker 1: especially in those days, because I believe the game was
- 10:38Speaker 1: at six o'clock in the even time and the one
- 10:39Speaker 1: o'clock eastern wind. We don't really see that anymore. How
- 10:42Speaker 1: did you find we.
- 10:43Speaker 2: Lost the game? But outside of that, I mean, you know,
- 10:47Speaker 2: to jump back to where there's great value is the
- 10:52Speaker 2: experience and opportunity from a player's perspective as well. It
- 10:56Speaker 2: was fantastic to have that opportunity to do that. And
- 11:00Speaker 2: the fan base it's real, it's not fake, it's it
- 11:05Speaker 2: is there. And to be able to bring our game
- 11:09Speaker 2: really throughout the world is fantastic, you know. And I
- 11:15Speaker 2: had some nice discussions with with with some of the
- 11:19Speaker 2: kickers today and people express, you know, how much they
- 11:22Speaker 2: would enjoy to see a Steelers football game in Ireland
- 11:25Speaker 2: and I would too.
- 11:28Speaker 1: Well Mark that Dome, I kind of went well that
- 11:30Speaker 1: with all that on the weis second, I'm not sure
- 11:32Speaker 1: if you've got the chance, Jordan to play abroad for
- 11:34Speaker 1: the Staters, but being a member of Theaters organization with
- 11:38Speaker 1: all the comes of that, how fun was it to
- 11:41Speaker 1: be a part of that organization? Yeah?
- 11:43Speaker 3: No, I absolutely love my time in Pittsburgh. We didn't
- 11:46Speaker 3: play any international games when I was there, but yeah,
- 11:48Speaker 3: definitely an absolutely really taught knit community within Pittsburgh, not
- 11:52Speaker 3: just from the fan dice, but within the building, whether
- 11:54Speaker 3: it's the coaches, the support stuff, the players, everyone's you know, yeah,
- 11:59Speaker 3: basically a family. Likes taking touch with most of the
- 12:01Speaker 3: guys that I was started with when I was there,
- 12:03Speaker 3: maybe now that I'm outside the building. So you know,
- 12:05Speaker 3: I had a great time in Pittsburgh and loved it.
- 12:08Speaker 1: It's great to see like you guys be here because
- 12:10Speaker 1: we've seen guys like s Antonio Holmes, Alan Fanaka come
- 12:13Speaker 1: over here for the meetup last year, and it just
- 12:16Speaker 1: shows you, even if you're not playing anymore, there's still
- 12:18Speaker 1: so many opportunities, which is awesome to see not just
- 12:20Speaker 1: here but around the world in Mexico and in Germany
- 12:23Speaker 1: as well, which was recently awarded at the Global Market
- 12:26Speaker 1: Scheme for the Steelers. And one thing that's for me
- 12:29Speaker 1: and to see him for both of you guys, is
- 12:32Speaker 1: Mike Tomlin. He's still there. What's he like to work with?
- 12:36Speaker 1: And you know how much did he impact the direction
- 12:39Speaker 1: of your career in Pittsburgh.
- 12:40Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, he was really good to me a
- 12:42Speaker 3: lot of my career to him, He's just very personal,
- 12:46Speaker 3: really gets to know the players, really like that helps
- 12:50Speaker 3: find out what makes each guy tick and helps push
- 12:52Speaker 3: him along. I was with one other team and I
- 12:56Speaker 3: had a couple of different coaches while I was there,
- 12:57Speaker 3: and just seeing those different coaching styles from people compared
- 13:00Speaker 3: to how Mike does it, it's yeah, makes it very
- 13:02Speaker 3: noticeable how how well of a job he does in
- 13:05Speaker 3: finding out what makes each guy on the roster of tick.
- 13:07Speaker 3: It's not just you know, a couple of start players
- 13:09Speaker 3: that he talks so, it's not just you know, the
- 13:11Speaker 3: quarterback or you know the main receiver that he wants
- 13:13Speaker 3: to hang out with, it's every single person in the building.
- 13:15Speaker 3: He'll He'll talk to the equipment guys, He'll talk to
- 13:17Speaker 3: the trainers and make sure that everyone's fully brought into
- 13:20Speaker 3: the process and doing it when they can to make
- 13:22Speaker 3: sure that the team's successful.
- 13:24Speaker 1: Even from the outside. Coach tomlin Sean seems like not
- 13:27Speaker 1: only an interesting character, but a motivator in the locker room.
- 13:31Speaker 1: What was it like when you're her? Coach?
- 13:33Speaker 2: Tomlin is a is a favorite of mine. The relationship
- 13:38Speaker 2: I have a great deal of respect for and still
- 13:41Speaker 2: to this day, would do anything for him. Tremendous leader, motivator,
- 13:46Speaker 2: and he's very absolute and everything he does. I love
- 13:49Speaker 2: that leadership style.
- 13:51Speaker 1: You know, I.
- 13:53Speaker 2: Would be fun to be in a locker room with
- 13:55Speaker 2: him again.
- 13:56Speaker 1: Jordan the theaters last player in Ireland in nineteen ninety seven,
- 13:59Speaker 1: again the Bears and those days that it wasn't a
- 14:02Speaker 1: regular season game, there was one. I think the first
- 14:04Speaker 1: one wasn't two. They the world has changed since then.
- 14:07Speaker 1: But for this franchise, it obviously is a lot different
- 14:11Speaker 1: than the sense of the Rooney family. You know, has
- 14:14Speaker 1: ties to this island and they're very, very proud of
- 14:16Speaker 1: the Ruts. As we heard mister Rooney on the last
- 14:18Speaker 1: podcast talk about. For you, from what you've seen over
- 14:21Speaker 1: the last few days, how perfect or how exciting would
- 14:24Speaker 1: it be to see Dublin get an NFL game.
- 14:27Speaker 3: Yeah, it would be absolutely awesome for this city. Hopefully
- 14:30Speaker 3: it is Pittsburgh at some point. Obviously, as you mentioned,
- 14:32Speaker 3: with the ties to the island, Yeah, there's a lot
- 14:35Speaker 3: of good fans like as you know, we had the
- 14:37Speaker 3: camp today with all the young kids. These guys were
- 14:39Speaker 3: you know, twelve thirteen and they had a pretty deep
- 14:41Speaker 3: knowledge of football. I'm trying to stump them with a
- 14:43Speaker 3: few rules questions and every single kid was all over it.
- 14:45Speaker 3: So yeah, with that sort of following and passion from
- 14:49Speaker 3: the young kids right through the adults, it'll be Yeah,
- 14:51Speaker 3: it'd be an absolutely awesome event if they managed to
- 14:54Speaker 3: get one down the road.
- 14:55Speaker 1: Well, do you be charming in the bit to get
- 14:58Speaker 1: on that plane? Sean?
- 15:00Speaker 2: The Rooney family is as real and genuine as I've
- 15:04Speaker 2: ever been around. And I see that from a Pittsburgh perspective,
- 15:09Speaker 2: and now I had the opportunity to see it here
- 15:14Speaker 2: actually in person in Ireland. And the strength of their
- 15:18Speaker 2: name and their commitment to Ireland and locally back home,
- 15:23Speaker 2: their commitment to Pittsburgh, you can't fake that for that
- 15:26Speaker 2: many years. And I'm very grateful and humbled to have
- 15:30Speaker 2: been a part of the Steelers organization and to be
- 15:35Speaker 2: here in Ireland in this moment. And they are massive
- 15:40Speaker 2: supporter of not just the Pittsburgh Steelers, but certainly the
- 15:44Speaker 2: Rooney family. Fantastic, fantastic family.
- 15:48Speaker 1: Just finally, any plans over the next few days, I'm
- 15:51Speaker 1: sure it doesn't not be the first and last time
- 15:53Speaker 1: in Ireland.
- 15:55Speaker 2: I would love to bring my wife and girls back
- 15:59Speaker 2: to Ireland, and my wife is a Crowley and has
- 16:03Speaker 2: has roots in Ireland. We would love to bring the
- 16:08Speaker 2: girls back. I know they would love it as I do.
- 16:13Speaker 1: Mister Don Rooney went to the epic Immigration Museum which
- 16:16Speaker 1: is in the city center and seeing all of his heritage,
- 16:19Speaker 1: so I'm sure you could do that and it would
- 16:20Speaker 1: be awesome to see. This will be your last time here,
- 16:23Speaker 1: Jordan Muller, I don't think so.
- 16:25Speaker 4: Now.
- 16:25Speaker 3: I'd like to come back at some point. Yeah, We've
- 16:26Speaker 3: got a couple of young kids, so I'm gonna have
- 16:28Speaker 3: to wipe for them to here a little bit old
- 16:29Speaker 3: before you try to drag a runner run into national trip.
- 16:32Speaker 3: But yeah, definitely plan on coming back at some point.
- 16:34Speaker 1: We're gonna hear a couple of sound bites from Jimmy
- 16:36Speaker 1: on the podcast, who was at the event today at
