- Lucas: Hey, welcome back to the show, Luna. We're recording episode 202, can you believe it? Luna: I know, it's crazy. And today, we're going somewhere I absolutely love. Lucas: Oh yeah? Where are we headed? Luna: We're going to a restaurant. Specifically, how to ask for the bill in Spanish. Lucas: Oh, that's perfect. We've done ordering food before, but what about when you're ready to leave and you need that little piece of paper? Luna: Exactly. I always freeze when the waiter comes and I just point awkwardly. Lucas: Well, today we're going to fix that. Let's start with the most common phrase. You say, La cuenta, por favor. Luna: La cuenta, por favor. What does cuenta mean again? Lucas: Cuenta means 'the bill' or 'the check.' In Spanish, it's la cuenta, because it's feminine. Luna: Ah, so I'm asking for 'the bill, please.' La cuenta, por favor. Lucas: Perfect. Now, let's say you want to pay with a card. You'd ask, ¿Puedo pagar con tarjeta? Luna: ¿Puedo pagar con tarjeta? That's a mouthful. Can I pay with card? Lucas: Exactly. Pay attention to the word pagar, it means 'to pay.' And tarjeta is 'card.' Luna: So I'm asking Can I pay with card? ¿Puedo pagar con tarjeta? Lucas: You got it. Now, before you even ask for the bill, you might want to compliment the food. A classic is, Está delicioso. Luna: Está delicioso. That's 'it's delicious.' I love that. Can I say that about my meal? Lucas: Definitely. You can say it about any food. Está delicioso. Luna: Está delicioso. I'm going to try that next time I have a good taco. Lucas: And then, when you're leaving, you always say, Muchas gracias. Luna: Muchas gracias. We've heard that before. It's like 'thank you very much.' Lucas: Exactly. It's polite and easy. Let's put it all together in a little scene. Imagine we're at a restaurant, we've finished our meals, and I say to the waiter, La cuenta, por favor. Luna: Okay, I'm the waiter. Here you go. That'll be twenty euros. Lucas: Then I ask, ¿Puedo pagar con tarjeta? Luna: And I say, Sí, claro. And then I'd say, Está delicioso, about the food, too. Lucas: Perfect. And when you leave, you say, Muchas gracias. See, it's simple. You're ready for any restaurant. Luna: This is so useful. I can't wait to use these phrases. Thanks for teaching me, Lucas.
