- 0:00Vox Liturgica: The propers of the day according to the 1962 Roman Missal. A Feria of the twenty first Sunday after Pentecost, October 22 in the year of our Lord 2026. Of this Sunday, Dom Gaspar Lefevre writes, the church is nearing the end of the cycle which reminds us of that last hour of the world when the devil will exert with more violence his power over men. For soon he will be deprived of it. With the relentlessness he showed Job by stripping him of his possessions and striking him down by bodily sufferings, which we hear about in the offertory, he will then persecute especially the just.
- 1:05Therefore, the apostle describes for the Christian in this Sunday's epistle the armor he must put on to enable him to withstand in those woeful times the powers of hell. He gives him a girdle, a curis, a shield, a helmet, and a sword. So that strengthened in the Lord, whose will nothing can resist, as mentioned in the introit, he may be protected against those who persecute him as mentioned in the communion verse. Thus preserved from all adversity by the effect of the unceasing goodness of the Lord, the family of God, which is the church, will be enabled to glorify his name by good works, which we pray for in the collect. Therefore the gospel speaks to us of the charity towards our neighbor which is the abridgment of the whole morality of Christianity.
- 2:19If God has been good towards us, we must be the same towards our brethren. Or how shall we escape the proceedings of the powerful creditor whose debtor the whole world is and to whom all will have to render account. If we pardon our neighbor from the bottom of our hearts, the master will remit our debts. Otherwise, he would deliver us to the executors of his justice until we have paid all we owe him. Let us ask God to deliver us in his goodness from the assaults of the devil and to help us to imitate the divine mercy a grace we pray for in the collect.
- 3:15In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen. The introit. Everything, O Lord, is at thy disposal. None can thwart thy will.
- 3:36Heaven and earth, and all that lies beneath heaven's vault, are thy creation, and thou art Lord of them all. Blessed are they who pass through life's journey unstained, who follow the law of the Lord. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost, as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be, through all ages of ages. Amen. Everything, O Lord, is at thy disposal none can thwart thy will.
- 4:21Heaven and earth, and all that lies beneath heaven's vault, are thy creation, and thou art Lord of them all. The Collect, let us pray. O Lord, keep thy household with ever watchful care, we pray thee, so that under thy protection it may be freed from all adversity, and zealous in well doing, to the glory of thy name. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, through all ages of ages. Amen.
- 5:16Lesson from the letter of Saint Paul the Apostle to the Ephesians. Brethren, draw your strength from the Lord from that mastery which his power supplies. You must wear all the weapons in God's armory if you would find strength to resist the cunning of the devil. It is not against flesh and blood that we enter the lists. We have to do with princedoms and powers, with those who have mastery of the world in these dark days with malign influences in an order higher than our own.
- 6:06Take up all God's armor then so you will be able to stand your ground when the evil time comes and be found still on your feet when all the task is over. Stand fast. Your loins girt with truth. The breastplate of justice fitted on, and your feet shod in readiness to publish the gospel of peace. With all this, take up the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fire tipped arrows of your wicked enemy.
- 6:50Make the helmet of salvation your own and the sword of the spirit, God's word. The gradual. O Lord, thou hast been our refuge from generation to generation, before the hills came to birth, before the whole frame of the world was engendered, from eternity to eternity, thou art God. Alleluia. Alleluia.
- 7:31When Israel came out of Egypt, the sons of Jacob heard no more a strange language. Alleluia. A continuation of the Holy Gospel according to Matthew. At that time Jesus said to his disciples, Here is an image of the kingdom of heaven. There was a king who had resolved to enter into a reckoning with his servants and had scarcely begun the reckoning when one was brought before him who was 10,000 talents in his debt.
- 8:16He had no means of making payment, whereupon his master gave orders that he should be sold with his wife and children, and all that he had, and so the debt should be paid. With that the servant fell at his feet and said, Have patience with me, and I will pay thee in full. And his master, moved with pity for him, let the servant go and discharged him of his debt. So the servant went out and met with a fellow servant of his who owed him a 100 pieces of silver whereupon he caught hold of him and took him by the throat and said, pay me all thou owest me. His fellow servant went down on his knees in entreaty.
- 9:22Have patience with me, he said, and I will pay thee in full. But the other refused. He went away and committed him to prison for such time as the debt was unpaid. The rest of the servants were full of indignation when they saw this done and went in to tell their master what had happened. And so he was summoned by his master who said to him, I remitted all that debt of thine, thou wicked servant, at thy entreaty.
- 10:05Was it not thy duty to have pity on thy fellow servant, as I had pity on thee. And his master, in anger, gave him over to be tortured until the debt was paid. It is thus that my heavenly father will deal with you if brother does not forgive brother with all his heart. The Offeratory There dwelt in the land of Huss a man called Job, innocent and upright, and one that feared God. Satan asked Lev to tempt him, and was allowed by the Lord to have his will with all that belonged to him, and with his bodily health.
- 11:01All Job's possessions and children he destroyed, and afflicted his body too with grievous sores. The secret. In thy readiness to forgive, O Lord, accept this sacrifice. For it is thy will that through it thyself art appeased, and we restored and saved through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen.
- 11:51The common preface. Just it is indeed and fitting, right in for our salvation, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks unto thee, O Holy Lord, Father Almighty, everlasting God, through whom the angels praise thy majesty, the dominions worship it, the power stand in awe, the heavens and the hosts of heaven together with the blessed Seraphim joyfully do magnify. We entreat thee that thou command it be permitted us to join with them in confessing thee while we say with lowly praise. Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts, the heavens and the earth are full of thy glory. Hosanna in the highest.
- 12:51Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. The communion. Longing for thy saving help, I put my trust in thy word. When will my wrongs be redressed?
- 13:14Knaves will be plotting against me still. Come to my aid, O Lord my God. The Post Communion. Let us pray. We have been seeking the food of immortality, O Lord, and implore thee that with its savour still on our tongues we may with pure hearts continue to pursue it through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages.
- 14:02Amen. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen. Let us bless the Lord.
