  [upbeat music] Hey.
• 0:19
Hey, hey. Hey. I was gonna start talking and then I didn't know what to say, so. Hey. It's Full Spectrum Cycling. This is show number 208. 208. Can't hate on 208, or something.
• 0:33
Nothing sounds quite like a, oh wait, that's 808. > It, it's JK over there. Hey, hey, hey, hey. Uh, it's Tony over here. Yep. I'm in my technical, technology world.
• 0:46
You were ma- you, JK was making note of the fact that the band practicing next door was, uh- Uh-... playing something similar to the- Yeah, it was very-... to the, the intro tune... very, very familiar.
• 0:57
They should cover this and then, you know. I thought they did. [laughs] I thought it was, I thought it was like, oh, okay, that's clever. It's like, uh, I don't know. Has any show used the canned road- More than us?...
• 1:09
intro music more than we have? No. No. Can- not possible. But if you can, can you? Pretty soon they're gonna come after us and go, "Oh, your show's gotta go. That's not, uh, we got the rights to that music." Okay.
• 1:21
[laughs] No one listens anyway. Well, it would be a tragedy if we had to dump all these shows that nobody listens to anyway. You know what else is a tragedy is we're missing a practice lap. Yes, I did get that from Mr.
• 1:38
Zahn today. I, I sent him a note and asked him if this was going to be a regular weekly thing now, and he wasn't sure yet. Yeah. I don't remember them being Wednesdays, though.
• 1:47
I thought they were- They were always Wednesdays. Were they? Always. Well, that's why I always miss them, apparently. I've, yeah, [laughs] that's, I've missed them since we started the [laughs] podcast on Wednesdays.
• 1:54
Oh, it's- Otherwise- I'm wondering what they're-... maybe we should move the podcast... I'm wondering what they're gonna do about, um, Humboldt. It's not gonna be done by then, I don't think. Ooh, that's a mess, man.
• 2:03
Yeah, it's pr- it's worse than last year, I think. I had to go reset the internet for my tenants, and, uh, meant I was on the other side of Locust. Normally, I get to just cruise through the park to work now,
• 2:15
and I had to do a double back around because I had to go, like, through a gravel section to get over Humboldt to get on the east side to be able to ride around. Right. I was like, what the hell's going on here?
• 2:29
I don't think they can do that for the old race day. No. But- Speaking of race day, May 7th. Yep. It's a Sunday. It's a Sunday. Sunday, will be River West registration at, uh, Wu Tang Garden Park, Black Husky, slash-
• 2:47
Bands... across, [laughs] across from the old shop. Yeah, bands. Over there on, uh- Fun stuff... Bremen and Locust, so. Beer. If you're gonna do the- Snacks...
• 2:54
if, if you're gonna do the event, you might wanna be there- Yeah... to get your sp- ticket punched. I'm doing a team this year. That's hard to think. Can't believe it. Ooh. I think the trolls- Spells that...
• 3:07
the trolls are under the bridge. Oh, hey-oh. The trolls are under- Oh, yeah... the bridge. Right, so that's, uh, that's May 7th. If you wanna go do that, that would be a good thing.
• 3:19
And even if you don't wanna actually- Then I get to sit there and go, okay, now that's when everyone gives me their ticket when they get their number called, and I wait- And eventually you get in...
• 3:29
and I wait, and I wait, and I wait, and I glare at Jeremy, and I glare, heh, come on, come on. [laughs] He knows. [laughs] Do it, do it now. This is my volunteer shift. You're terrible. It is my volunteer shift.
• 3:42
Terrible. It is. So- [laughs]... well, well before that happens, not quite a month, is 414 Day coming up here. Friday is today. Today. It's today, coming up here today. Internet time.
• 3:55
[laughs] I don't even know what's going on on 414 Day. I've been woefully, uh, inadequate about finding what's happening, at least cycling oriented, on that particular day. I haven't heard nothing cycling oriented.
• 4:06
Yeah, I don't, I really haven't seen anything. But that- I know UVM has a big fun drive because I work there. Fun drive. So, yeah, 4- Too Much Metal Fred is dropping his flag on the, uh,
• 4:19
uh, city hall front in the morning. Ooh, okay. Ooh, I wonder if, uh, our friend Jason is gonna light that sucker up with his fancy lighting. It looks like, let's see. Bum, bum, bum, bum, bum. 8:00 AM, flag drop.
• 4:33
Speaking of 414. 414. Beller Cantina and Fure Kafefe. Speaking of beer, I, I don't have any beer. If Tony, if Tony had a camera, he could take a picture of this thing. I, I could probably.
• 4:41
Take a picture of this thing here, Tony. Tony, Tony, check this thing out. This is a... Is this from Too, is this from Too Much Metal Fred? Yep. Yeah. It's a 414 koozie, just in case you need to keep your beer cold.
• 4:52
That's a- And-... crazy fucking picture of you, Greg, just for the record. [laughs] Also, since Tony- Oh, good God, you look crazed. Well, that would be kinda normal. Also, since- Oh, the next one looks great...
• 5:02
s- You look like RuPaul. [laughs] Dude, you, you, this is great. All right. Oh. Go on. Good Lord. Since Tony's thirsty, we're already at the top of the hill. [bell ringing] Oh, sending JK into the cooler. Yeah.
• 5:16
Well, this is another, um- Show beer? Show beer. Show beer. Let's do show beer right away- Show beer... 'cause it's- Show beer... who knows, who knows when we'll get a chance- What a great colored can... to do it again.
• 5:24
Man. Is this a label that you're supposed to cut off, like- I don't know... they've been asking, or? Do we have to get our AR-15s out and shoot this can 'cause it's pinkish?
• 5:33
[laughs] Oh, that is the dumbest argument in the world right now. [laughs] Dumbest. Um- I mean, Kid Rock isn't, why is he even relevant anymore? Yeah, good question. I mean, and [sighs]
• 5:45
  - There's so many other reasons- Ever-... why to dislike Bud Light... but not, but not that transgender person. Yeah. But, but Jenner's okay. I just don't, yeah. It's like, what the fuck? My w- It's all politics. True.
• 5:54
Shut the hell up. It- It's a horrible beer. It sucked anyway. They all suck, yeah. That's why I don't like it. I don't drink it 'cause it sucks. I don't care who's sponsoring it But this might not suck.
• 6:05
This looks pretty good So here's another one of those, uh, this is Deschutes, but it's another one of those wonderful variety packs Ah, they rule. I picked- Squeezy Rider...
• 6:14
I picked this one today because it's called Squeezy Rider, and it actually has, like, rider- Uh-huh... right in there. It does, it does Right, right in there. Uh-huh.
• 6:22
I tried, I tried to ride around today, but damn was it windy out there. Oh, gosh. So this is a West Coast IPA. You'll notice we do the IPA thing. Brewed in Bend, Oregon by the old Deschutes.
• 6:34
Since 1988, it's been employee-owned there- Kick ass... Oregon. 7% ABV. Ooh. Intensely tropical. No fruit was harmed in the making of this beer. Uh, it has, um- It's, it's hefty...
• 6:48
it, it, it's, uh, it's heaped with hops. It's- It's hefty... but it's not super, um, the IBU's only 40-ish, so it's, you know. I just cracked mine. You got your, you got your, uh- The alcohol, it's just-...
• 7:01
Cascade, your Centennial Mosaic, and your Galaxy hops in there. Well. Hey, guess what? Before I- No fruit was harmed. That's what I [laughs] that's what I've been led to believe. Mm-hmm. Uh, before I...
• 7:12
I'm gonna take a swallow. Just take a sip. It's pretty, it's pretty good. It's pretty good. Hmm. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. A little heartier than you'd think. It is hearty. It's not as fruity as I would've thought. Mm-hmm.
• 7:24
No fruit. It's beery, and it's good. So I had a, I had lunch with my good buddy Bob. We're at The Brick the other day, and they had a tapper that I didn't recognize called Brewer's Kitchen. Hmm. Have you heard of this?
• 7:38
Mm-mm. Well, it is part of the Pilot Brewing Company. Okay. But it's like their sort of experimental one. Okay. And I'll be darned, I, I think it was called Two F- Two Falls or Twin Falls or something.
• 7:50
But I'll be darned if that wasn't a great beer and might've had more than- W-... a couple of them, and- What Zoner was it? Was it an IPA or a pale ale? It was, it's an IPA. Okay. Yeah.
• 7:58
And it reminds me more of an amorphic beer than anything I've ever had from anybody that's not them. Ah. Really? Interesting. Yeah, it was very good. Maybe they stole the recipe. Yeah.
• 8:07
[laughs] Well, it's all, it's ever-evolving over there. I don't know that we've... Well, every- Yeah... maybe from one week to the next we've had the same beer, but it just keeps changing. Yeah, it's pretty awesome.
• 8:16
It's definitely good. We might... So I think Beer Alley might be open. Yeah, we're gonna have to check. Can I ship- At least, at least for another day because it's gonna be freaking cold next week again.
• 8:26
Yeah, next week's gonna be chilly. [laughs] I know. It, it- It's not that cold, but still. No, it's normal. Well, yeah. Right? This is- It's normal... yeah, it's normal. This is Abbey normal. Yeah. This is Abbey normal.
• 8:34
Abbey de Romero. So when you were speaking of things of the cycling around, I'm also putting into perspective [clears throat] internet time. So that which would occur next Wednesday and next Thursday- Is?... da, da, ha.
• 8:48
Well, next Thursday, Daikaiju. Daikaiju... Daikaiju. It's on the list. Daikaiju coming. And if you have tickets, I don't know, uh, it's m- been moved back to, on Wednesday,
• 8:59
uh, Bikini Kill is at Riverside instead of- Oh, that's gonna be a good show... if they don't cancel it. Oof. If they don't. Knock wood. They've, well, they've had to- Well-...
• 9:08
they've had to cancel it, like, four fucking times so far Well, while we're on this though- [laughs]... let's talk about the s- speaking of the greatest radio station in the world, WMC 91.7. And this will be on Sunday.
• 9:17
Uh, Sunday is Rockabilly Chili Cook-off. Unbelievable. I should be back in town. Unbelievable. It will, it will be a fundraiser for said radio station. It, it's fun. I did my timing. My flight comes in at- It's fun...
• 9:27
at, uh, 12:12. Nice. You take the cab right there. And I'm like [laughs] I'm just like, dun-dun-dun-dun-dun, drop off my mom, and then yeah. I can make it. I can get back at least for a couple hours. Um, and then
• 9:39
big announcement for Backyard Barbecue. Mm-hmm. Freaking Bob Mould. Oh, yeah. Yeah, that was a, that was a good pull. That's unreal. That is so cool. I was looking at the, uh- At, at the new-...
• 9:54
the announcement and all the other bands, and they all have links. Bob Mould doesn't have a link. Does he have a website? He doesn't need a link. He doesn't need a link.
• 10:00
[laughs] But for the record, since I'm a Guitar Smasher, I get free entrance to the show. We are. That almost pays for the Guitar Smasher. I'm coming close.
• 10:08
As soon as I have more than 30 spare dollars in my pocket, the extra 10. What do you mean? It's guitar... Well, I'm- It's a free show. It's the Backyard Barbecue. Don't you have to be a member? Oh, really?
• 10:20
That's just wide open? Yeah. Oh, well then. That's at, that's at the fucking, uh- Well, you can go to hell, hell, hell... at Humboldt Park. Yeah, yeah.
• 10:26
I, wait, I was like, I'm like, I saw your chest puffing out for a second. I get, I get beers and stuff for free. And I'm like, wait a goddamn minute. No, that's in the Humboldt Park Beer Show.
• 10:32
Yeah, you've been woefully inadequate about making sure you've- I've never been to one, so I'm kinda-... been using the Guitar Smasher... yeah, I don't really use it. I'm just happy to support them. Level thing.
• 10:39
Oh, that's funny. I'm just happy to support them. They're good people, so. Threw me off there for a minute. I'm like, wait, what? No. I gotta pay. Wait, no, no. This is, no, they're just like, this is like- By- Yeah...
• 10:48
by the way, radio listeners, uh, last week JK was more or less clean shaven, and today he's got a beard again. [laughs] Did you listen to last week's show? I did. Ah. I did. Was- Actually- [laughs]...
• 11:01
it was better than I thought [laughs] It's better than I thought when we were doing it. 'Cause, 'cause JK, you were ripped. Ripped. Yeah, you, you, you were ripping. Ripping.
• 11:10
What was even better was when we were a, at post-show at Amorphic and, and he was leaning on you with his belly. [laughs] Like, "Hi. Hi." Yeah. "Hi there." [laughs] I had to go. That was classic. I had to go.
• 11:26
Uh, here's a, here's a cycling-oriented thing since this s- super- Source... superficially a show about some sort of bike and stuff, and this happens every year 'round Fathers Day. Sure.
• 11:36
Uh, June, June 17th this year, Fat Tire Tour of Milwaukee- Yeah, yeah... has been announced for June 17th. Yeah, and they even introduced the theme already. The theme, let's discuss the theme. Do we know the theme?
• 11:47
Uh, Milwaukee Graffiti? Milwaukee Graffiti. Oh, yeah. Mm, which is, I get it. I think this could be fun. Get your poodle skirts out and... I don't own a poodle skirt yet.
• 12:01
[laughs] Have, have someone make you one out of old River West 24 shirts or some such. Well, who's gonna ride their bike into the, into the diner wall?
• 12:12
Oh, maybe we could get one made out of, uh- Or who's gonna, you know... Oh, wait. Yeah, there's some shenanigans that could cause a little- I haven't... That's, that's a movie I have not watched in a very long time.
• 12:21
I haven't watched it in- I, I wanted to be John-... 30-plus years... I wanted to be John when I was a kid, 'cause he's so badass with his, you know, badass hot rod. But his, he was so aloof. Aloof. Aloof.
• 12:32
Maybe it's worth watching American Graffiti again, 'cause it is a classically good movie. No, 'cause I think it was Richard, Richard Dreyfuss's character
• 12:43
that, like, has, like, the little m- moped scooter and vroom, vroom, vroom, just blasts it into the wall. [laughs] I gotta watch this again. He was a young Richard Dreyfuss at that time, too. Oh, he is.
• 12:54
There was a lot of young people who later became- Famous... famous. Is Ha- Harrison Ford in there? Mm-hmm. Yeah. Mm-hmm, mm-hmm. He's in there. He's kinda young in there. Yep, yep, yeah. You know how old he is now? Huh?
• 13:04
Like 80. My favorite story about that is- What are you talking about, guys? So he went to Ripon- What are you talking about?...
• 13:09
and got kicked out, and then they offered him an honorary degree, [laughs] and he's like, "Fuck you." I don't want it. That's the best. [laughs] So, I mean, other people have done that, too.
• 13:19
He's like, "You kicked me out." So, okay, I kept, I was always telling people that Arnold Schwarzenegger went to Superior, which technically he did, but it was a correspondence course for the most part. Oh.
• 13:29
So he actually came to Superior to do the, the final exams and stuff, and meet the professors and stuff, but he was competing and he was in California, but he got his degree from University of Wisconsin-Superior. Arnold.
• 13:45
He filled a pothole. That was all the news this week. I know. And, and you know why he did it? For, for cyclists. Well, and fame. Fame. Well, he's- It's a lot to do with fame... semi-irrelevant now, isn't he? I think so.
• 13:57
I'm gonna live forever. I'm gonna push the green button and see what happens here. Hey, what? Let's see. Oh, oh. Oh, darn. What? I don't know what I'm doing. I pushed the button. Hey, radio listener.
• 14:07
Who do we have on the line? Hi, this is Mark Peterson from Ogden, Utah. Can you guys hear me? Oh. Happy belated birthday. Ahoy. Oh, thank you. Thank you. We most certainly can. You always have such a good voice.
• 14:20
You come through better than most of our- He does... other guests. Yes. Must be the Ford. Really? [laughs] Yeah, the clarity's- Yeah, may-... impressive...
• 14:28
maybe you've got really good cell connection or, I don't know, but yes. Thank you for calling in, Mark. I don't know. I, I- What kind of wifi router are you using?
• 14:35
[laughs] I always feel weird when I hear my voice recorded, you know? Yeah, oh. Don't you guys feel weird when you hear your voice recorded? Yep, always. That's why I don- Well, I have no idea-...
• 14:43
that's why I don't listen... what I sound like other than when I listen to the podcast. That's why I don't listen to myself, 'cause it's, it's, it's demeaning to me. [laughs] When I think about- I was here...
• 14:51
myself, I touch myself. Yeah, when? Oh, that's right. Ugh. Hello. [laughs] So, it, so, so Mark, Mark asked me earlier in the week, uh, "Well, what are you guys gonna talk about this week?"
• 15:03
I'm like, "I don't, I don't even know." No. But I was hoping that Mark had something [laughs] to talk about, because we, we have our, we have our stuff, but it reminded me that we don't do- Wait. Yeah... wait, though...
• 15:13
we don't do show notes like we used to. Mark, wait. Wait, Mark, before we talk about what you have to talk about, let's talk about Craig Smith, not the guy we know as Sven, and that Cannondale of his.
• 15:27
'Cause I'm right there with you, brother. Yeah, yeah. That thing's sweet. Dude, did you see how much it weighs? [laughs] Yes, 17.3 with city bars. Yeah. I didn't know you could make a- Yeah...
• 15:40
bike out of beer cans that light. It, the thing is impressive. For $500 with Paul componentry on it. Yep. Are you kidding me? And microSHIFT shifters. He said that he did a- Yep... he used, uh, BikeBlue whatever,
• 15:57
and that's what the going price is for these bikes. And I'm like, "That's insane," because that bike as a road bike built had to have been tipping near three grand. Well, not including the Paul stuff.
• 16:09
But now he's got it converted to a city bike with Paul and microSHIFT. I'm like, and the best that he can get is 500? Well, I think he's- I, I-... he's a generous individual. I know.
• 16:19
He, he wants somebody to get that, that, that deserves it. That, he wants a local guy. Yep. And the, the problem is is, is I really want that bike. [laughs] My wife will kill me. Tony's at N+5 right now.
• 16:31
[laughs] I'm, yeah. Yeah. But God, that looks like a freaking unbelievably fun bike to ride. I guess. I- It really does. And it- It looks like you could just go out and, like, kick, kick 30 miles out- Right?...
• 16:44
and just do it chill and fast. Right. That's exa- And I'm like, "Oh, God." Anyway, talk to us now. I'm sorry, I had to digress into that, 'cause I noticed both of us- Yeah. Yeah, yeah... were commenting on it.
• 16:55
No, actually, actually, you kind of, you kind of touch on it in a, in a way. I wanted to talk to you guys about the magic of bicycles. Hm. I like this.
• 17:04
And, and where I'm going with that- I'm gonna have to put this in the show notes, because magic of bicycles, I mean, if we put that in the title- Yeah... of this post, people are gonna be like, "What? What- Well...
• 17:12
what's a magic bicycle?" Exactly. Well, I mean, uh, you guys know, whe- whenever I ride a bike, uh, something magical happens, man. Yep.
• 17:23
Um, ever since I was a little kid, the very first time I got on a bike and wrecked and knocked out my front teeth and had to go to the dentist emergency style- [laughs]... um, I loved bikes, you know?
• 17:33
I mean, there's, th- they're therapeutic. I mean, whenever life kinda gets me, you know, by the short ones, I, I ride my bike if I can, and somehow or other it's like, is like this magic salve.
• 17:49
Like, it, like, it just heals me. That should be a T-shirt. Yes. Bicycles heal. Bicycles... No. Very simple. Or, or magic salve. Magic salve. Bicycles heal. [laughs] No.
• 18:02
I think salve's a bit of an obscure word for a T-shirt. No. I love it. I- That's why it should be on a T-shirt... well, I, I know for a fact that Mark has the sickness, which is building- Oh... cool ass bikes. Yeah.
• 18:14
So let me ask you this, because- Yeah... it's, it's basically what I live for is to build bikes. I build a kickass bike. Yep. I like to ride it around and go, "God, that's a kickass bike."
• 18:24
And then I'm like, "Oh, now I wanna build another kickass bike."
• 18:27
[laughs] So it, it doesn't diminish the one that was built, but I don't know if the glossiness comes off of it or something, but it's like once the, once the, the finish line is crossed and it's a viable thing,
• 18:42
I'm like, "Well, yeah, you're, you're kinda all right. I'll ride you, but I'd like to now start another project." [laughs] So. Right. It, it's interesting.
• 18:51
It's not even about the bicycle itself, it's about the act that you're doing what you're doing. Um, for at least for me it is m- many times.
• 18:59
I mean, even though I love all the bicycles I build, they kinda blur together, especially after 40, you know? I mean, it starts becoming like- Like age-wise or number of bikes-wise? Sure. Let's go there, too.
• 19:12
[laughs] Uh, I actually wanted to talk about age, maturity, ego, and how we change from one thing to another, and how bicycles are involved in it.
• 19:22
Because I used to really, like, jump and do a bunch of rad stuff and kinda get crazy, and now I'm more about building and riding, uh, gently.
• 19:32
[laughs] I remember, uh, us being at Saddle Rack and you sending it on fat bikes when we were doing video stuff and pictures out there in Utah.
• 19:41
Uh, I, I can, I can attest you're, you're the, you're the flying burrito brother. [laughs] Well, well there, there, there was something, there was freedom in the air on a bike. If it...
• 19:53
When, when you guys jump a bike and you, you, you grease that landing on, on a roller or something and you know that feeling, that's like the next level of spinning.
• 20:03
And I wanna keep doing that, but I can only do it into a foam pit or in the snow, so fat biking rules.
• 20:10
[laughs] Oh, you, you get, you don't have a lot of beach out there on the old Great Salt Lake, but, uh, beaches are also really good 'cause if you're practicing- Yeah... your wheelies- They are...
• 20:17
and you kinda go over backwards, it's not as horrific as if it's pavement, that's for sure. Yeah, yeah. If you go down, you can roll out of it, you know? I mean, no big deal. I, I totally could see that.
• 20:28
I wish we had stuff like that. We do a little bit up around a reservoir called Pineview where we get some nice sandy beaches there, but it, they're k- kind of steep, but, you know, whatever.
• 20:39
Well, here's, here's a- Make the jump... here's a great thing about fat bikes and, and certainly Dave Lunds can attest to this.
• 20:45
We're riding the beach and there's a pier, and you go on the pier and you jump off the pier into the lake. And it's fun, and you're flying through the air.
• 20:54
Uh, and then you get in the water and your bike separates from you, and the bike floats. You don't have to swim- Right... to the bottom to get it. Right. That's funny. So it's got its own life preservers on it.
• 21:03
[laughs] And then you can actually use it as a kickboard to get back to shore. Right. It, it's like just- In, in June, right? [laughs]... super badass. I gotta find- Super badass... I gotta find an old video.
• 21:13
It's, it's somewhere on my phone. When I had, uh, it, submerged my bike in the lake numerous times, and I'm like, "Huh, I wonder if there's any water in that frame?"
• 21:23
[laughs] So I, I stuck an air nozzle in, in a, in one of the water bottle bosses and just blasted it. [laughs] And there was water coming out the other one for, like, I don't know, 15 seconds. [laughs] Mm-hmm.
• 21:33
[laughs] Yeah, yeah. They, they... You want- Oh, that's funny... hey folks, if you're gonna- They take on some water...
• 21:37
well, if you're gonna ride your bike in a lake, you might wanna put a couple of four-millimeter bolts- [laughs]... in the water bottle bosses to keep water from getting in there. [laughs] It's still gonna get in.
• 21:46
You, you, you build a lake bike, like you- It's still gonna get... You know, water, water will find a way. It's still gonna get in there. It's fun. Yep, yep, yep. You know, I have never jumped, uh, like a lake jump.
• 21:56
I've always wanted to. My friends have done it. I've seen it. But at the times, I've just never done it. It's hard. I've always dreamed of sending a kicker off, off of, at the end of a dock.
• 22:05
But if you land it wrong, dude, it hurts. Yeah, when the handlebar hits you in your chin. I'm sure. Yeah. Yeah, and you're hitting hard water. I mean, water's not soft, man. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
• 22:14
Unless you got it in your house and you're silly.
• 22:16
So they have a, they have a, uh, a club here at, I think it's at one of the YMCAs, where they have a pool for people who are learning how to dive, and you're going off the, you know- Uh-huh...
• 22:25
the 10-meter board or something. Yes. But if you're gonna really- Yeah... if you're really gonna pancake it in there, they can push a button and it sends up shit tons of bubbles and it cushions your blow. A bubble. Nice.
• 22:38
Totally. Yep, yep. It's so fast. I wanna do that. It's just like, it's like, oh, oh, oh, you're totally gonna, you know, yard sale this water here, and it's just like phh. You guys will land softly. Oh, yeah.
• 22:48
Oh, that's- It's soft water with like-... what a genius idea... 80% air or something. Yeah, yeah. Good stuff.
• 22:53
So I was a lifeguard when I was 20 years old, 20, 21 in there, and, um, we used to intentionally hit the water as hard as we could. We just called it extreme diving. I don't know what the hell we were thinking.
• 23:05
[laughs] But the idea was the slap, like the belly flop- Yep... the hit on your back- Yep... as hard as you could. The louder the slap- Oh, yeah... the bigger the red, the more funny it was. The back flip. Yeah.
• 23:13
Belly flop but the back flop. I, I remember the, I remember the flying squirrel where you just spread out and right before you hit the water from the 10-meter board- The tuck... you just tuck- Yep...
• 23:22
like right in the front. Yep. Yeah. No, sometimes the- Yeah, yeah. Good times, man... but the face usually took the brunt of it in my case, [laughs] so. I would- Oh, [laughs]...
• 23:29
  I would not today jump off a 10-meter board. I'd, I, I don't think. No way, no way. No. That's a long ways down. Really? No. I, I couldn't do a 10 meter anymore.
• 23:37
Oh, if you know, if you know how to go into the water, it's not that bad. I, I, I won't go over 50 feet, but I'll, I'll go up to a 10 meter for sure. Right on. Oof. Yeah. Well, at least it's water, right?
• 23:50
[laughs] I mean, uh, I grew up rock jumping.
• 23:53
Um, there were places around here where in the summer all we would do is, uh, we'd get a keg and about 100 of us and we'd take this keg and we'd jump into this, uh, reservoir that's a ways away.
• 24:04
And you'd have to swim probably a good 100 yards with the keg, and the keg would float, but everyone was around it.
• 24:09
We'd take it over to the other side where there are all these rocks, and we would party over there and b- the cops couldn't get to you. There was nothing they could do about it.
• 24:17
They'd drive up on the other side, we'd just stay there all night. And so we did a lot of beer drinking and jumping off big tall rocks. [laughs] Nice. And, you know- Yeah...
• 24:26
I'm amazed that no one died because that reservoir is famous for taking people that do that. In fact, it's illegal to do that now.
• 24:35
Probably because of us, but man, we used to be crazy on that bus [laughs] We, we, we have a lot... In Wisconsin, we have a lot of great quarries to do that, that have filled up.
• 24:43
And Red, Red Granite- With, you know, some o- some of them were, you can see down to the, the, the- The b- the bottom... and also the equipment that didn't make it out. [laughs] Exactly.
• 24:50
Red, Red Granite Quarry, you, is a scuba dive certifica- certified facility. You can see all the hardware, and it's, it's like- Yeah, like bulldozers and-... 100 feet down. God, there's a lot of stuff down there...
• 25:01
I mean, it's super deep. It's pretty cool. Wow. Um, so I've done a, I've done a t- So, so- Like, well, I don't know what you call it. We call it cliff diving. I've done a ton of cliff diving as a, as a youngster.
• 25:12
Right around Lake Winnebago there, huh? Yeah. Did you ever find the, like, really shallow spot [laughs] when you're doing that? 'Cause I think the average depth of Lake Winnebago is, like, six feet. It's terrible.
• 25:22
It's terrible. Yeah. No, uh, the- It sucks... Red Granite Quarry or Berlin Quarry- Oh, there you go. Yeah, quarries... they were deep.
• 25:28
Uh- But yeah, I submerged a three-wheeler in Lake Winnebago, and I'm like, "Bah," in the winter. Oh, [laughs] I'm like, "Ah, we'll be fine. We'll get out." [laughs] Worst that's gonna happen, we're gonna have to walk.
• 25:37
The South Ridge area quarry- Well, didn't the three-wheeler float just like a fat bike? Kinda snowmore... um, no. If it did, it floated upside down. [laughs] Yeah, they kinda flip over on their back to, like, a- Yeah.
• 25:47
Yeah, I figured it'd turtle, but- Yep. Yeah, they f- they filled that in and now it's this, like- Oh, no, you guys got-... subdivision or whatever.
• 25:55
But I'm like, I don't know w- if when they, when they drained the quarry, I know they found a couple Kuaharas and a couple Haros in there because- Oh, for sure... I know buddies of mine, they were...
• 26:08
They had to get rid of theirs. [laughs] They had to get rid of theirs in a pinch, and the only way to do it was, "We're gonna huck it in the fucking quarry." [laughs] And, yep.
• 26:17
[laughs] So I, every time I go by that subdivision going, "I wonder. I just wonder." [laughs] Wait, I don't know. You, you got snow out there sometimes, Mark. We used to have this thing we did called jaroofing.
• 26:29
Can you imagine what jaroofing might be? It's jumping from roof to roof. Jumping off a roof. Jump- jumping from one roof to another. It's like the... It's like- What the fuck are you thinking? Oh, yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
• 26:38
Totally. It, it's, like, all the, all the garages on an alley. You just jump from one to the other or- Really?... the best ones were, you know, two-story jumps. Never heard of this. It's kinda like...
• 26:49
It's, it's kinda like- That's, that's bad-ass... like a, it's like an... It's not parkour, parkour. Parkour. Parkour. Whatever you call it. Parkour. I mean, those guys are completely, um- Parkour? Parkour. Parkour.
• 26:59
Well, they're, they're- Parkour. Parkour. Hardcore. Parkour... but they're very good, and, and they practice. Parkour. Parkour. We just did stupid [laughs] shit as kids. I, you know, so yeah.
• 27:07
We jumped off of garage roofs to f- to the ground, but we never jumped- Yeah... garage to garage. The, uh, the, the old... I don't know if JK is old enough to remember the Atwater Beach Bath House. No.
• 27:19
It was two stories tall, and there was what looked to be very good sized snow drifts at the bottom, so we jumped off. Oh. It was not- Anybody break anything? Yeah, that's why my ankle's still kinda semi...
• 27:34
So that and soccer. I'm put- I'm blaming it on both of them. And pride. [laughs] And pride. [laughs] Keep walking. [laughs] Are you, uh, drinking anything, Mark? Oh, just a cold PBR.
• 27:47
That's, that's good enough beer to drink, for sure. All right, there's- Tallboy or 12? Pabst Blue Ribbon. Pabst Blue Ribbon. Uh, just, just a regular 12-ouncer. Right on. I, I have an issue here about- Just-...
• 27:59
Pabst Blue Ribbon right now. Hmm. And it- It's made in California... well, first of all- Okay... Tony doesn't go to Bremen Cafe, but I do now and again. 3.50 for a 12-ounce bottle. Are you kidding me? That's insane.
• 28:11
Are you kidding me? What? That should be 99 cents. Are you kidding me? That's what I'm saying. Yeah. Yeah. The- Yeah, it, it's like 50 cents... I'll say, mm. Right? Well, I don't know.
• 28:20
We go to, um- The economy of it is what it is. Yeah. Yeah. You're looking at three bucks maybe. Yeah. 2.50 when you're lucky. Two bucks when you're- But it's- For a 12-ounce bottle? But over at Nomad- Fuck that...
• 28:31
it's two bucks for a 12-er and three bucks for- 2.50. Oh, now that went up, too. Oh, it's been up for a while.
• 28:38
[clears throat] I just do the math, and sometimes the short- You guys, you guys have way better- Sometimes the shorter can is cheaper... yeah. Yeah. What's that, man? You, you guys have better beer around you.
• 28:48
You guys, uh, have a much better selection and opportunity- Yeah... for beer, and I, I don't really realize that until we talk on the phone 'cause- It's Wisconsin, man... I'm in Utah. We're drunkards. Yeah, yeah.
• 28:58
You, you guys apparently have just delicious beers all over the place- Everywhere... that are affordable. Here we've got, like, PBR, Coors Light. What's a 12-pack of PBR? Stuff like that.
• 29:08
You have to go to the liquor store to find anything good. What does, what does a 12-pack of PBR cost you? Oh, nine bucks, eight bucks. Is it- Ah, that's about right... is it 3.2 PBR or is it- Or is it full PBR?...
• 29:23
is it actually full-bodied 4.5% PBR or whatever it is? Um, I, I, I think it's the normal, like, 4.5% PBR. Mm-hmm. I mean, it's not, it's not e- it doesn't have to be Utah beer anymore.
• 29:36
It can be up by- [laughs] Oh, so that, that's, that, did, did, was that- Oh, yep... was that Mitt Romney that got rid of that or- 4., 4.7... who got rid of that out that way? [laughs] 4.7% is what it is.
• 29:46
All right, there you go. Yeah, that, that's, that's about what we pay, too. Yeah, no, that's all right. Hey, I was just looking- Yeah... at the show notes and I, I- What show you at?...
• 29:53
I didn't mention this yet, but you guys remember last week you talked about Pinnacle closing? Yeah. A, got, like, four calls today from people in Shorewood looking for a bike shop. Wow. Uh, one guy wanted the- Nice...
• 30:04
the insert for a Presta valve. [laughs] L- seriously, one guy wanted a cap to cover his valve. I'm like, "Well, truly Spokeart's- Really?... open over there." [laughs] We're, we're not...
• 30:17
I mean, we're not, we're not a traditional bike shop anymore, especially with- He wanted a cap just for the Presta? This was a different guy, too. The one guy needed the insert, which I get because- Okay. Yeah, 'cause...
• 30:27
the thing is gonna not wanna release air- Right, right, right... but he's like, "Is that replaceable?" Like, well, yeah, probably. And another person wanted a cap? A cap for his- Sven, you mean like the, the valve core.
• 30:36
Well, the valve- Right, a core... okay, these are two different guys, though. Valve core guy, yes. Uh, that one I get 'cause it's not gonna work without it, but valve- Sure... valve stem cap The cap...
• 30:47
look, have you ever watched the Lance Armstrong video where he's like, "Here's how you change a tube." Throw it away. But anyway, yeah, he's like- [laughs]... "Throw that thing away. We don't need that stupid thing."
• 30:55
[laughs] Yeah. [laughs] Well, I, I actually s- have spent quite a bit of money on valve caps in my life. I buy them in all kinds of beautiful colors and machined out of aluminum. Are any of them- That's understandable...
• 31:08
are any of them skulls or dice? Yeah, yeah. I have a couple. Now, that makes sense to me, but just to- N- none of this surprises me... just to cover the-... knowing Mark...
• 31:19
just to cover the thing up, just to k- Yeah, yeah... whatever... I mean, the little plastic cap, oh my God, you should've just given one. You probably could've looked on your floor and saw one.
• 31:27
Well, that's true, except that we're not quite, like, a full-on- Open shop... we're not an open shop right now. We're more of a custom shop kinda thing. But here's my point about this stuff.
• 31:37
So are you guys, are you guys doing retail or are you doing service? What is your- Yes... primary, if anything? We are doing retail to an extent.
• 31:45
The problem is the last two years I've tapped all my capital, so I got no money. So trying to pack the shop- Yeah... with a bunch of bikes like Prong Horn has is not- Yeah... feasible right this second. But also- True...
• 31:59
I don't know. I mean, I guess, I think Milwaukee's pretty good on rents, but we were just talking about Pinnacle and Shorewood, and this was a miniature. It's about the size of our sh- of our service area, not the shop.
• 32:10
Yeah, not even a shop. 500 square feet, 950 a month. Oh. I d- maybe that sounds cheap- Oof... to people in other areas like Brooklyn. I'm sure that's a drop in the bucket. Yeah, it's, yeah, it's nothing.
• 32:20
That's give me a tomorrow. But, but here that's kinda spendy to try and make money doing bike shit for, when you can have, like, six bikes in your shop at a time or something maybe. Right.
• 32:30
And you certainly can't do any retail. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, we're mostly, we're, we're, we're, we- Yeah, it's a tiny place. I popped in there once for, and the guy did save me 'cause I could not get my, uh- Yeah...
• 32:39
I couldn't get my tube or my, uh, my tire unseated from my rim at all. He got it. I'm gonna pro, I'm gonna prognosticate for you fellows. And he had the right leverage.
• 32:48
I believe the future is service and rentals, specifically of e-bikes. Yep. Mm, you are- I'd see that. I'd see that. Y- you, you may have something there, sir. I see that. And, uh, and you know,
• 33:00
we work on, we do a lot of e-bikes. We probably do 40 or 50 a year conversions. I don't sell a ready-made e-bike. We take people's bikes
• 33:11
that they like and we electrify them, or we have a, we do do some work for another company, which is kinda helping us- Yeah... stay afloat here for now. But, um, I agree 100%. Yeah, yeah.
• 33:22
Um, service, I had a buddy who owned a shop down in Kenosha called Total Cyclery.
• 33:27
It was one of the greatest sh- shops in the world, and they had the, uh, Washington Park Velodrome down there, and they were very into track racing. So at one point it was this, a legit bike shop.
• 33:38
He sold it, kinda semi-retired, and then he came back. He goes, "You know what? I just wanna do some service." So he got a little shop right across from the Velodrome, just about. [laughs] Killed it.
• 33:47
Well, I mean, he did enough to make himself happy and not, like, be bored w- in his close- Right... to retirement age kinda thing. And I think that's, that, I, I agree with you, Mark, 100%.
• 33:59
So that kinda leads into my overall topic that was talking about the magic of bicycles and how they've changed us throughout our entire lives. As I've matured, my, my thought about bicycles has changed.
• 34:11
It sounds like you've experienced some of the similar things, or you guys have experienced some of those things where it was one aspect of your life, but now it's mutated into another.
• 34:22
But it's, for me, I used to be a warrior. I, I, when I was in my prior career, I wanted to make as much money as I could and to have, buy as much things as I could, because that gives you self-worth, right?
• 34:35
Anyhow, now I just want to maintain what I have and enjoy where I'm at. I'm not worried about conquering the world anymore. I'm not worried about, you know, being the best of everything.
• 34:49
I just wanna, I wanna cruise with this thing for a while and just chill and enjoy and be grateful for what I've got in my life. Preaching to the choir. Right. I just n- But-...
• 34:59
I just need to, to, to get out from under the crippling debt of the last couple years, and I'll be... I mean, the, everything was great until the Fed decided that they were gonna fuck me right in the butt.
• 35:12
Have I, have I mentioned this is the first month in four years I haven't paid two mortgages? Tony's in a good place over there. [laughs] I'm, and you know- Nice...
• 35:21
what we should throw into this, since Mark's on the call and we're talking about the podcast,
• 35:28
is, and the, the whole maintenance theory versus, you know, buy bikes, rental, et cetera, can we just throw a fuck you out to Chewie? No. Chewie just- With him and his whole- Chewie, Chewie, cut it out...
• 35:41
anti-electric bike movement. [laughs] Stop it. Plus, it's just fun to say, "Fuck you, Chewie." Well, also- I love the guy to death... first of all, he doesn't mess with JK or me. He mostly messes with you.
• 35:50
I know, it's just all me. It's all me. So I really can't, I can't get behind you. [laughs] You're going right to me. [laughs] So I'm, I'm gonna, it, I screwed it up last week, but I'm gonna start an eTweed ride.
• 36:02
I think that's gonna be hilarious. [laughs] And I, you know who's gonna be on it? Chewie. Me and Chewie might be on it. Quite pos- Without e...
• 36:08
quite possibly one of our, one of our favorite people in the world is, is Chewie. He's a great human being. [laughs] He's so cool. Tell him come and do the 24 again and, and then- Right? We had-... we can-...
• 36:17
so much fun. Yeah, we took pictures of him all sloppy drunk in the, in the hammock and stuff. Wasn't it great? Yeah. We all rode cargo bikes. What a great day that was. Yeah. Cargo bikes with coolers full of beer.
• 36:28
All right, Mark, uh- Yes... thank you very much for calling in. Do you have any, like, words of wisdom to leave us with until we talk to you again? 'Cause frankly, if it weren't for you- I don't, well, well, if I-...
• 36:37
we'd probably quit doing this show. [laughs] I, I, I don't know if I have any words of wisdom because I, I'm finding that I know pretty much nothing Uh, the further I go along.
• 36:49
But I, I think maybe if I could say anything to everyone is just, just go ride a bike, man. I- if, if- Ugh... something's got you, go- Just go ride a bike... just go ride a bike, man. Just go ride a bike. That's all.
• 37:00
That's all. Man, those are words to fucking live by And of course, uh, go ahead and feel free to stop by Pronghorn Bicycles in Syracuse, Utah, 2432 West 1700 South, Syracuse, Utah, 84075.
• 37:13
Our phone number is 801-820-5934. I love you guys, man. Uh- Hey, get us, get us- Good one... uh, if you, if you, if- Love you too...
• 37:20
next time, like, when you're on the show, uh, maybe get some, uh, pictures of what's going on at Pronghorn. A little, uh, a little behind the scenes, little happy people buying bikes. And, you know- Sure...
• 37:30
we'd love to help Pronghorn do better. The- I mean, that's- The occasional person giving us the finger. Yeah, fingers are good. [laughs] I mean, it's- I like fingers. [laughs] It, it, it's the middle finger salute.
• 37:39
We d- w- hell yeah. We like them. Cool, man. Well, thank you very much. That's very much appreciated. I will do. I will do. Thank you. All right. Cool. Talk to you soon, Mark. Thank you very much. Love you, brother.
• 37:49
And- Take it easy You guys have a great night. Talk to you later. You too. Peace. Bye. Later. Hey, everybody, Mark- That was fun... Peterson. See, again, again, somebody not- He's a good dude...
• 38:00
somebody not us saves our show. Well- Right. Dun, dun, dun, dun... I don't know. I thought our show was off to a pretty good start this week. Yeah, but- But, uh, thank God someone called in.
• 38:07
I was hoping to s- I would have been kept bitching about my routers. [laughs] But I already placed the order, and I will see what happens tomorrow. Did you do it while we were on the show? Yeah. How multi-tasky are you?
• 38:17
Well, no, I had it ready to go. Yeah, like multitasking.
• 38:19
And I was like, dun, dun, dun, I just wanna get it by tomorrow morning so I can fucking deal with this nonsense we- I wanted, uh, BS to call in, but no BS, so maybe next week.
• 38:27
I'm gonna, I'm gonna call him again after the show and say, "Why are you not calling in?" Right. Right. Every time you say that, are you familiar with the spinoff Beastie Boys band called BS2000? Negatory, dumb buddy.
• 38:38
Okay. Because every time you... That's all that pops into my head. I'm like, "Oh." We're at the end of the show. I don't know what that is. It was, uh, Tiny Tim's birthday this past week anyways. Tiny- Oh.
• 38:47
[laughs] Tiny bubbles Bubbles. Oh, there he is. Tiptoe through the tulips. [laughs] There he is. We can stop it now.
• 38:55
[laughs] He does a very good version of, I can't remember what, but it sounded almost like fucking Julia Child. Oh. Julia Child. [laughs] I like Tiny Tim. Yeah, yeah. Oh. All right. Well. I think he did The Doors.
• 39:08
Like, "Come on, baby, light my fire." And I don't know, it was just fucking awesome. Um, he always had the ukulele, which was very well played with his nimble fingers. And with that, we're gonna leave you. Fine.
• 39:18
Thanks, Mark Peterson, for being the only good thing about the show. Uh- Ch- check out Johnny Fives Hello Kitty guitar playing. Wait. That's gonna kick ass. I will not. And we'll watch that after the show.
• 39:28
I should not do that. We can end the show now. 950 for 500 square feet. That's good enough. Somebody's gonna be like, "That's absolutely a good deal." No. But not- Those people are idiots... right. All right. Bye.
• 39:40
Next week, folks. Thank you. Bye-bye.
• 39:45
  [upbeat rock music]
