- 0:48get your podcasts. What are we talking about?
- 1:06good morning today we are talking about the battle
- 1:08of formats of video cassettes in fact we all
- 1:11know the history of the war of video formats
- 1:14or at least we thought we knew it for a short
- 1:16period at the end of the seventies betamax also
- 1:18called beta by sony and vhs by almost all the
- 1:21other electronics manufacturers coexist on the
- 1:23market but after a few months the market itself
- 1:26chooses the vhs and everyone lives it happy and
- 1:29happy but the story is much more articulate in
- 1:31reality it even begins in 1971 with a strange
- 1:35that is possible to see on the d7080 .it site.
- 1:39It is the first video cassette introduced by
- 1:41Philips in 1972, similarly to the abandoned stereo
- 1:45audio format. is apparently not equipped with
- 1:49two coils but only one in fact the format is
- 1:51very different from the cassettes we are used
- 1:53to how is it possible that there is only one
- 1:55coil the answer is in the fact that the two parts
- 1:57of the tape the one that contains how much you
- 1:59still have to see the one that contains how much
- 2:01has already been seen are overlapped instead
- 2:04of side by side with the color that the tape
- 2:06never ends the maximum duration of the cassettes
- 2:08limited to 60 minutes but it is still appropriate
- 2:10to use those from 45 even from 30 as the first
- 2:14ones from 60 do not have the unpleasant tendency
- 2:16of self -destruct the ribbon breaks into operation
- 2:19as you can see from an advertisement that we
- 2:21have taken from the philips catalog of 73 is
- 2:24absolutely intuitive and this is an irony because
- 2:26in the catalog you can see an incredible amount
- 2:29of indications relative to each of the keys the
- 2:32keys are a lot it will be because it was too
- 2:33early in 73 Italians had for the most black and
- 2:37white televisions and even some valves it will
- 2:39be for the short duration of the cassette 60
- 2:41minutes but the system presented several times
- 2:44at the great fair in milan This rare document
- 2:59was broadcast on television and recorded with
- 3:02a Sony Betamax SL -C7 video recorder. For this
- 3:06reason, today you can see it again in the background,
- 3:08in slow motion, with stop of frame rate, in fast
- 3:12forward. because this Sony video recorder allows
- 3:16the MoViola effect. Sony Betamax. Guaranteed
- 3:20by 3 million successes. The most sold in the
- 3:23world. The cassette is presented as a normal
- 3:24cassette with two coils like the audio ones.
- 3:27It has a video quality that is slightly lower
- 3:29than that of television programs. The audio quality
- 3:32was, on the other hand, terrible. But the system
- 3:33costs a lot, both on the video recorder side,
- 3:35there was often talk of over a million words,
- 3:38both on the cassette side. And so, a short time
- 3:40later, JVC launches a competing system, VHS,
- 3:43the one we all know, bigger cassette, worse video
- 3:46quality and the same poor audio quality. But
- 3:48the video recorder costs less and especially
- 3:50the recorders. are produced by many brands, unlike
- 3:53beta, which was almost a monopoly. Sony, video
- 3:55recorders and virgin cassettes become so affordable,
- 3:58but not pre -recorded films. It is not uncommon
- 4:01for a title to cost even 80 ,000 lire, as in
- 4:04the case of Terminator or Terminator 2, which,
- 4:06by the way, was appropriate to buy rather in
- 4:08support of LaserDisc with an even more interesting
- 4:10format, of which we talk in a separate article.
- 4:12We have written several times about the poor
- 4:14audio quality of videocassettes, which may surprise
- 4:16and surprise the younger readers used to listening
- 4:19to soundtracks instead. even in Dolby Stereo
- 4:22from these cassettes. Why? The reason is simple,
- 4:24the first videocassettes recorded the audio in
- 4:26the same way as the music cassettes with small
- 4:29audio tracks next to the big ones dedicated to
- 4:32the video, in short, they used a spare space.
- 4:34In 1984, instead, the VHS Hi -Fi is invented,
- 4:38the audio is embedded in the video track, modulated
- 4:41in frequency, almost like a small radio transmission,
- 4:43finally obtaining excellent audio quality. The
- 4:46sound quality of the VHS Hi -Fi is so high that
- 4:49it competes with even the born cd so much to
- 4:51bring some enthusiasts to use the format for
- 4:54recording purely audio programs we all know the
- 4:57epilogue of the battle of formats until their
- 4:59substantial disappearance in the early 2000s
- 5:02the cassettes are available in the only vhs format
- 5:05no trace of residue of beta but what was the
- 5:07reason there are two explanations one more romantic
- 5:09one more business the romantic one concerns the
- 5:11industry of porn cassettes tired of having to
- 5:14duplicate in incredible structures equipped with
- 5:16hundreds of video recorders each title two una
- 5:48count on a much more limited library of titles.
- 5:51And so, in 1987, an announcement of Sony appeared
- 5:53on all the magazines dedicated to video -housing.
- 5:56From that day on, VHS video recorders would also
- 5:58have been produced by the company, which was
- 6:02nothing more than an alternative way of saying
- 6:04only VHS video recorders at the beginning of
- 6:07the end of the beta. Thanks to Marco Barsotti
