- 0:02Speaker 1: Welcome to the Wire to Hunt podcast, your home for
- 0:06Speaker 1: deer hunting news, stories and strategies, and now your host,
- 0:11Speaker 1: Mark Kenyon. Welcome to the Wire to Hunt podcast. I'm
- 0:16Speaker 1: your host, Mark Kenyan, and this is episode number three
- 0:19Speaker 1: and eight and we're here today with another Fresh Radio
- 0:23Speaker 1: episode in which we are getting the most recent intel
- 0:26Speaker 1: from deer hunters all across the country about what's happening now,
- 0:29Speaker 1: how our conditions at pacting deer, and how can you
- 0:32Speaker 1: get one killed? Right now? Welcome to wire Hunts Love
- 0:45Speaker 1: Fresh Radio. I'm your host. Spent a new more flying soul.
- 0:49Speaker 1: This week is Mark Kenyon heads for the Boundary Waters
- 0:51Speaker 1: in Minnesota and I had to South Dakota on a
- 0:54Speaker 1: Musloder hunt. If you're not familiar with this show, each
- 0:57Speaker 1: week I talked to different hunters from across the nation
- 1:00Speaker 1: get the latest intel on buck movement in their area.
- 1:03Speaker 1: The idea is then for hunters to then take that
- 1:06Speaker 1: info and apply it to their strategies, to their setups,
- 1:09Speaker 1: to their properties to help them get a buck on
- 1:12Speaker 1: the ground. Now. Ordinarily Mark and I would open up
- 1:15Speaker 1: the show with a bit of banter and talk about
- 1:17Speaker 1: some big picture themes. For this time, of year and
- 1:20Speaker 1: sort of preview what you're going to hear from our guests.
- 1:23Speaker 1: If Mark were here, I think we would touch on
- 1:25Speaker 1: the October Law because it's October and if you think
- 1:29Speaker 1: of like the October Law date, that's what you would
- 1:32Speaker 1: have in your mind. And I'm not going to break
- 1:35Speaker 1: down the entire October Law for you, but Mark Kennyon
- 1:39Speaker 1: just wrote an article for the Mediator dot com titled
- 1:43Speaker 1: why the October Law is Real. As a defender of science,
- 1:48Speaker 1: it bothers me to kind of say that, yes, the
- 1:51Speaker 1: October Law is real, but you need to go and
- 1:54Speaker 1: read Mark's work like I did, and you'll see what
- 1:57Speaker 1: point he's making about how what hunters are seeing and
- 2:01Speaker 1: what the science is reporting are different things. So I
- 2:05Speaker 1: think there's a lot to be learned from that article,
- 2:08Speaker 1: and that's kind of a good precursor for hunting this
- 2:12Speaker 1: time of year. We have four guests for this week's show,
- 2:15Speaker 1: and we start off with Josh Smith from wildcaret Sinse
- 2:18Speaker 1: in Tennessee. Then we talked to Kevin Mistison from the
- 2:21Speaker 1: Deer Hunter Podcast in Michigan, and then we talked to
- 2:24Speaker 1: Beaumartinic in Pennsylvania from East meets West Hunt podcasts, and
- 2:28Speaker 1: then we go to Kansas and talked to Nate Craik
- 2:30Speaker 1: from Identical Draw for this week's show. We've got a
- 2:33Speaker 1: mix of public land hunters and private land hunters, and
- 2:36Speaker 1: Southern hunters and northern hunters, and aggressive hunters and passive hunters.
- 2:40Speaker 1: So I think there would be something for everybody on
- 2:44Speaker 1: this episode of rut Fresh Radio. Now we're gonna kick
- 2:48Speaker 1: it to the interviews alright, and joining us on the
- 2:52Speaker 1: line first is Josh Smith in Tennessee from wildcaret Sense. Now,
- 2:56Speaker 1: Josh in Tennessee, what would you say the bucket activities
- 2:59Speaker 1: been lately the scale of one to ten, I'd say
- 3:02Speaker 1: lately we've probably been at a three. Uh. I would
- 3:05Speaker 1: go even lower than that, Um, if it weren't for
- 3:08Speaker 1: a little bit of cold front we had pushed over
- 3:10Speaker 1: this past weekend. I got the year up on their
- 3:12Speaker 1: feet a little better. So that was nice to see. Um.
- 3:16Speaker 1: Other than that, we just had some really hot temperatures
- 3:19Speaker 1: and it's suppressed dear movement overall. Um, I've been seeing
- 3:23Speaker 1: dose out and about a little more UM than the
- 3:25Speaker 1: box obviously, so, but overall it's been pretty slow. Just
- 3:30Speaker 1: with the heat with the exception of this past weekend
- 3:32Speaker 1: where we had about a twenty four degree drop Saturday night,
- 3:36Speaker 1: so uh it made for a little better hunting Saturday
- 3:39Speaker 1: Eve and Sunday morning, but still pretty well as far
- 3:42Speaker 1: as buck movement, What do your strategies look like this
- 3:45Speaker 1: time of year? Kind of an awkward time of year
- 3:47Speaker 1: when you don't want to be too aggressive, but you
- 3:50Speaker 1: should still be in the woods because bucks can still
- 3:52Speaker 1: be caught moving. Yeah, for sure, um, mostly right now. Um,
- 3:58Speaker 1: keeping tabs on acorns. Um, that's a big thing for me. Uh,
- 4:03Speaker 1: you know, just singling out any white oaks that I
- 4:06Speaker 1: can find and hunt those as hard as possible. We
- 4:08Speaker 1: don't have a lot of agriculture, so that's the best
- 4:11Speaker 1: bet for right now. There's not really any any sort
- 4:14Speaker 1: of rud activity taking place yet obviously, so uh, just
- 4:17Speaker 1: figuring out where the best food sources are and sticking
- 4:20Speaker 1: tight to them. As somebody who owns a dear year
- 4:24Speaker 1: in company, what is your strategy with sense this time
- 4:26Speaker 1: of year and how does that evolve as we get
- 4:28Speaker 1: into the rud. Sure, well, right now I'm using a
- 4:33Speaker 1: buck basic bucking doll urines as a cover. With the
- 4:36Speaker 1: heat that we've got it's pretty hard not to be
- 4:38Speaker 1: stinking up the area, so I want to use those
- 4:41Speaker 1: in the cover, um, just kind of cover my tracks basically,
- 4:45Speaker 1: you know, I'm sweating him stinking, So that's very helpful.
- 4:48Speaker 1: And as we start to close in on pre Rod
- 4:50Speaker 1: a little more, um, I'll get a little more addressive
- 4:53Speaker 1: with do estris and some of our rutting buck lures,
- 4:55Speaker 1: and I do use those right now, uh while I'm
- 4:58Speaker 1: making mock scrapes. Uh, we do have quite a few
- 5:01Speaker 1: cameras out um sitting over mox scrapes, just kind of
- 5:04Speaker 1: keeping inventory. So I'll use our sense that way right now. Um,
- 5:09Speaker 1: but I'm not really doing much as far as a
- 5:10Speaker 1: drag or anything like that yet. I say that for
- 5:13Speaker 1: a little bit later, probably a week or ten days
- 5:16Speaker 1: from now, maybe I'll start, uh start to utilize those
- 5:20Speaker 1: a little more. You probably run more trail cameras than
- 5:23Speaker 1: most hunters. Where those trail cameras at this time of year?
- 5:26Speaker 1: And how does that change over these next few weeks.
- 5:28Speaker 1: Do you have any specific mock scrape sites that you
- 5:32Speaker 1: find or security others right now? Any any mock scrapes
- 5:36Speaker 1: that I've set up are generally gonna be on any
- 5:40Speaker 1: corridor going from bad food, anywhere that I can find
- 5:44Speaker 1: a high traffic area where deer coming out of the
- 5:46Speaker 1: thick petting area and moving towards U. Those those oak ridges,
- 5:50Speaker 1: like I talked about, those are primarily where cameras are
- 5:53Speaker 1: set up, you know, and I'll have some random thrown
- 5:55Speaker 1: out there just to maybe catch something I'm unaware of.
- 5:58Speaker 1: But as far as target those are, those are my
- 6:00Speaker 1: hot spots, trying to catch a good high traffic area,
- 6:03Speaker 1: maybe a bottleneck of some sort between a betting area
- 6:06Speaker 1: and food, which is primarily the acorns. Are you concerned
- 6:09Speaker 1: with moon phases it all the time of year? Yeah,
- 6:13Speaker 1: I am. You know, we just kind of approach the
- 6:15Speaker 1: full moon. I think deer tend to move quite a
- 6:17Speaker 1: lot more in the evening hours, you know, at night. Um,
- 6:21Speaker 1: they're not up under feet as much in the daytime
- 6:23Speaker 1: because they don't have to be. They feel a little
- 6:24Speaker 1: more security curson around at night. Uh So, yeah, I
- 6:28Speaker 1: think it does have an effect. Um. I'm excited to
- 6:31Speaker 1: see as we taper off into a little cooler weather
- 6:34Speaker 1: here in the next week. I'm excited to see what
- 6:36Speaker 1: takes place as far as you know, having a new Moon,
- 6:40Speaker 1: and hopefully they'll be up on their feel little more
- 6:43Speaker 1: in a day like going forward. Then in the sext
- 6:45Speaker 1: week or so, what do you think that buck activity
- 6:47Speaker 1: is going to be on a scale of one to
- 6:49Speaker 1: ten in Tennessee. Oh, I think we'd get up to
- 6:52Speaker 1: probably a six a little higher after that as prey
- 6:56Speaker 1: up picks up a little more. But we're Wednesday night,
- 7:00Speaker 1: this is where gonna drop down to lows in the
- 7:01Speaker 1: upper thirties. Thursday is gonna be uh high in the
- 7:04Speaker 1: low sixties as opposed to like the upper seventies. We're
- 7:07Speaker 1: averaging right now, so I think that's gonna help a
- 7:09Speaker 1: little bit. So I'm I'm optimistic. I think traffic, deer
- 7:13Speaker 1: traffic is gonna pick up a little bit and hopefully
- 7:15Speaker 1: bucks get to move in a little bit more. Ore Joshua,
- 7:18Speaker 1: good luck to you and everyone else from Wildcare since
- 7:20Speaker 1: thanks for joining me. Thank you sir, all right and
- 7:25Speaker 1: joining us on the line. Next is Bow Martinic from
- 7:28Speaker 1: East meets West Haunt Podcasts in Pennsylvania. Now Bow in Pennsylvania.
- 7:32Speaker 1: What would you say the bucket activity has been lately
- 7:34Speaker 1: on the scale of one to ten. I would say
- 7:37Speaker 1: that the buck activity is somewhere around a five currently.
- 7:42Speaker 1: And the reason why I say is it's been if
- 7:45Speaker 1: we've had some good some cold mornings, some things that
- 7:49Speaker 1: a corn crops have been good, and a little bit
- 7:52Speaker 1: of movement. But still I think here in the coming ones,
- 7:56Speaker 1: it's it's going to get better as as scrapes and
- 7:59Speaker 1: rugs or start and to pop up, as well as
- 8:02Speaker 1: my drope cameras are starting to light up a little
- 8:05Speaker 1: bit more. And you just briefly touch on food sources,
- 8:10Speaker 1: but tell me about what kind of food you're focused
- 8:12Speaker 1: on this time of year. So right now, the hot
- 8:15Speaker 1: ticket item is the acorns. The red oaks have done
- 8:19Speaker 1: really well dropping in this this part of the state.
- 8:22Speaker 1: Um white oaks for a little bit, uh, you know,
- 8:25Speaker 1: harder to come by, but acorns have been the ticket.
- 8:29Speaker 1: Apple trees seem to have lost a lot of apples
- 8:32Speaker 1: early and but nonetheless acorns have been the hot ticket
- 8:36Speaker 1: item right now. What are your strategies in mid October
- 8:40Speaker 1: as a public land bowl hunter in Pennsylvania. So honestly,
- 8:44Speaker 1: I'm trying to, you know, be close to the food
- 8:47Speaker 1: source in this case being acorns. In the in that
- 8:50Speaker 1: that I'm hung there's not a whole lot of food
- 8:52Speaker 1: plots of other food sources besides in the timber. And
- 8:56Speaker 1: to do that, I'm trying to set up as close
- 8:58Speaker 1: as I can to cover where they're potentially betting and
- 9:02Speaker 1: and start to utilize scrapes and the scrapes right on
- 9:07Speaker 1: the edge of the cover going in some of these
- 9:09Speaker 1: sources will really start to the late up in the
- 9:12Speaker 1: next week will be my strategy going forward with signmaking
- 9:16Speaker 1: increasing and the abundance of acorns. What is your trail
- 9:19Speaker 1: camera strategy like right now? So I run probably of
- 9:23Speaker 1: my cameras on scrapes, and they and I mean they'll
- 9:28Speaker 1: use the licking branches year round, but really starting to
- 9:33Speaker 1: potter ground and start, you know, working in scrapes like
- 9:36Speaker 1: you typically see in October. So that's where I'm getting
- 9:39Speaker 1: the best intel is on those scrapes. When you see
- 9:43Speaker 1: an approaching cold front like we have coming in a
- 9:45Speaker 1: few days here in that part of the country, how
- 9:47Speaker 1: do your strategies change on public land? So I'm really gay.
- 9:52Speaker 1: What that's really gonna change for me is I'm gonna
- 9:54Speaker 1: try to get into some of my with the cold fronts.
- 9:57Speaker 1: I don't like to put any unnests or pressure in
- 10:00Speaker 1: spots that, you know, with the warmer weather, when I have,
- 10:03Speaker 1: you know, a bundant locations to go to, but really
- 10:06Speaker 1: they're cold front. Would would make me go into, you know,
- 10:10Speaker 1: some of my better areas going forward than this next
- 10:13Speaker 1: week or so. What do you think that bucket activity
- 10:15Speaker 1: is going to be on a scale of one to
- 10:17Speaker 1: ten in Pennsylvania? I think they're the buck activity. If
- 10:21Speaker 1: we get the cold front like we're supposed to, I
- 10:23Speaker 1: think it's gonna jump to around the seven. I would say, still,
- 10:27Speaker 1: don't think it's gonna be, you know, anything great, but
- 10:30Speaker 1: I think it's going to start to increase and as
- 10:34Speaker 1: we start getting towards the latter part of October. Our Bob,
- 10:37Speaker 1: good luck in Pennsylvania. Congrats on your ELK success in Idaho,
- 10:41Speaker 1: and thanks for joining me. Thanks Spencer alright enjoining us
- 10:45Speaker 1: on the line. Next is Kevin musus In in Michigan
- 10:48Speaker 1: from the Deer Hunter podcast. Kevin in Michigan, what would
- 10:51Speaker 1: you say the bucket activities Familey, on the scale of
- 10:53Speaker 1: one to ten, one to ten, I'm gonna go uh,
- 11:00Speaker 1: I'm gonna go two to three. The only reason I'm
- 11:04Speaker 1: not saying one or zero is because it is deer season,
- 11:08Speaker 1: and anything can happen. The reason I'm going two and
- 11:11Speaker 1: three and staying really low is because I think, uh,
- 11:15Speaker 1: incomplete honesty right now, you know, potentially the past week
- 11:23Speaker 1: and this coming week are probably as hard a time
- 11:27Speaker 1: as possible as you're going to have getting on a
- 11:29Speaker 1: buck here in Michigan, because they are now pretty much
- 11:34Speaker 1: off their summer patterns. They're fully off their summer patterns.
- 11:38Speaker 1: Everything's hide hard, horned, and the small game hunters are out,
- 11:43Speaker 1: waterfowl guys are out. The deer are very alert to
- 11:49Speaker 1: that it is hunting season, and they're basically going to
- 11:52Speaker 1: be in their beds before daybreak. And most of these deer, yes,
- 11:58Speaker 1: they're gonna stand up out of their beds during the
- 12:01Speaker 1: course of the day and maybe shift their beds, but
- 12:04Speaker 1: they're not going to move, you know, likely more than
- 12:07Speaker 1: twenty five to seventy five yards outside of their primary
- 12:11Speaker 1: bed in daylight. So unless you're um slipping in right
- 12:17Speaker 1: in too tight to their bedding area, it is your season.
- 12:22Speaker 1: Anything can happen to coyote can bump the bed, but
- 12:25Speaker 1: they're not getting up in the middle of the days
- 12:28Speaker 1: going on now, there's just no reason to be doing
- 12:31Speaker 1: that um buck movement is that, I would say pretty
- 12:36Speaker 1: low from what I've seen over the course of the
- 12:38Speaker 1: past week, and I expect that to continue through the
- 12:41Speaker 1: next week. Do you think this is a tough time
- 12:44Speaker 1: of year for all Michiganders or do the guys that
- 12:46Speaker 1: private land have it that much better? Uh? You know,
- 12:49Speaker 1: to be honest with you, I don't know that too
- 12:51Speaker 1: many private landowners have a big advantage um over public
- 12:57Speaker 1: land hunters here in Michigan. Sometimes the public land hunter
- 13:00Speaker 1: actually are the guys that are switched on and understand
- 13:06Speaker 1: potentially how to hunt these parcels a little bit better
- 13:09Speaker 1: because they're used to dealing with the pressure. But here
- 13:11Speaker 1: in Michigan, we have a lot of small parcels you
- 13:14Speaker 1: might be dealing with, uh, you know, five to forty acres,
- 13:18Speaker 1: And as much as you like to think you can
- 13:20Speaker 1: control what happens on that private property, there's elements that
- 13:23Speaker 1: are outside of your control. For instance, last weekend, one
- 13:27Speaker 1: of our neighbors his his young son shot a dough
- 13:31Speaker 1: They didn't think before they acted, and they just went
- 13:34Speaker 1: and looked for it and then notified us later that
- 13:36Speaker 1: would probably be on there. They'd probably be on our
- 13:39Speaker 1: trail cameras, and so you know these deer, they just
- 13:43Speaker 1: there's people in the woods and they know it. And
- 13:47Speaker 1: sometimes those big public parcels are much larger tracks with
- 13:53Speaker 1: bigger betting areas than what you could even have on
- 13:57Speaker 1: a small private land parcels. So I think either one
- 14:01Speaker 1: has their challenges this time of year here and in
- 14:05Speaker 1: any other pressure state as well, knowing that these next
- 14:09Speaker 1: few weeks you're going to be really tough in a
- 14:11Speaker 1: state like Michigan. Uh, say you did have the ideal
- 14:14Speaker 1: conditions you were looking for and whatever that might be
- 14:17Speaker 1: for a cold front, parametric pressure and moon phase, what
- 14:19Speaker 1: would your strategy then be to get a buck on
- 14:22Speaker 1: the ground. So it's um very similar to what it
- 14:28Speaker 1: is the the rest of the year. I'm getting in
- 14:32Speaker 1: tight to um to cover, you know, thick cover, betting cover, stick,
- 14:39Speaker 1: dense understudy. The deer are browsing, just natural brows. There's
- 14:44Speaker 1: still a lot of green foliage in the under story,
- 14:47Speaker 1: so the deer are very much just feeding where they
- 14:50Speaker 1: are betting. They're not really moving to destination food sources
- 14:55Speaker 1: until under the cover of darkness. Also, we have a
- 14:58Speaker 1: lot of acorns on the ground, so these dear, you know,
- 15:01Speaker 1: they'll bed in proximity to where they can visually see
- 15:05Speaker 1: where they're gonna, you know, be feeding before they move
- 15:08Speaker 1: out to destination feed. And it's pretty tough to get
- 15:12Speaker 1: in and on them. I mean, they're they're very savvy
- 15:15Speaker 1: when they bet, they put everything in their favor and
- 15:18Speaker 1: against you. But being a mobile hunter, being adaptable, and
- 15:24Speaker 1: then what I really love this time of year, uh
- 15:28Speaker 1: is just being able to get out there too and
- 15:31Speaker 1: hike around and check out some new spots and you're
- 15:34Speaker 1: you're kind of doing some in season scouting. Um. I
- 15:38Speaker 1: try to stay out of my historic places that I
- 15:41Speaker 1: know are going to be red hot come the beginning
- 15:44Speaker 1: of November. I don't want to put human intrusion in
- 15:47Speaker 1: those spots right now, so I'll let those dear kind
- 15:49Speaker 1: of have those spots. And by staying out of those spots,
- 15:53Speaker 1: other people that are hunting and applying pressure to other
- 15:56Speaker 1: areas are just gonna force more dear into of those
- 16:00Speaker 1: spots so that when the time is right come you
- 16:03Speaker 1: know a few days before leading up the Halloween all
- 16:06Speaker 1: the way to the opener of our gun season around November.
- 16:11Speaker 1: You know that that will be my highest opportunity spots
- 16:14Speaker 1: that I'll save for now. So right now, Uh, just
- 16:17Speaker 1: being open minded, being flexible, looking at new stuff. Uh,
- 16:22Speaker 1: whend is your friend and rain is your friend this
- 16:25Speaker 1: time of year, because everything's getting crispy and crunchy, and
- 16:29Speaker 1: the deer, like I said, are on high alert. It's
- 16:32Speaker 1: pretty hard to get within their you know, their safety
- 16:36Speaker 1: zone without alerting into your presence. So if you get
- 16:39Speaker 1: a good windy day or a good rain where you
- 16:43Speaker 1: can slip in somewhere quiet more, you know, with less
- 16:47Speaker 1: intrusion than what was normal, and those deer can't pick
- 16:50Speaker 1: you up. I think that's a pretty major asset to
- 16:53Speaker 1: be able to get right in and on top of
- 16:56Speaker 1: them this time of year. As someone who does a
- 16:59Speaker 1: lot of mobile haunting, There anything with your setup or
- 17:02Speaker 1: your gear that changes from now until that November gun season. Uh,
- 17:08Speaker 1: the only thing that will change for me is that
- 17:10Speaker 1: basically my layering. You know, right now, it's been pretty warm.
- 17:14Speaker 1: We've had temperatures all the way up you know, to seventy.
- 17:18Speaker 1: The lowest we've really seen when I've been out hunting
- 17:21Speaker 1: is you know, upper forties. So I'm pretty much wearing
- 17:25Speaker 1: what I'm hunting in but I'll be adding a lot
- 17:29Speaker 1: of layering. I'll keep a pair of bibs in my
- 17:32Speaker 1: bag as well as a puffy jacket and a shell
- 17:37Speaker 1: and some thicker gear so that when I do get
- 17:40Speaker 1: into my spot and I get my stand situated, I
- 17:43Speaker 1: go in and very light clothing, just some hiking pants
- 17:47Speaker 1: typically or a light pair of hunting pants, and maybe
- 17:49Speaker 1: a hood, a sweatshirt or even just a bass layer top.
- 17:53Speaker 1: And then when I get to my stand and I
- 17:54Speaker 1: get everything situated, I'll give myself five minutes to kind
- 17:58Speaker 1: of cool off before I put my warmth and layers
- 18:01Speaker 1: on and climb up and and other than that, Um no,
- 18:05Speaker 1: not really, not much changes for my gear set up
- 18:08Speaker 1: for being a hunt or other than you know, stuff
- 18:11Speaker 1: that I need to stay warm. And you know we
- 18:13Speaker 1: can be single digits come here in November, so you'd
- 18:18Speaker 1: almost have to be trusted for two separate things to
- 18:20Speaker 1: hike in and out and then the set going forward.
- 18:23Speaker 1: Then in this next week or so, what do you
- 18:25Speaker 1: think that bucket activity is going to be on a
- 18:27Speaker 1: scale of one to ten in Michigan. I think we're
- 18:29Speaker 1: gonna stay low. Um, we do have a cold front
- 18:33Speaker 1: moving in that I believe that will uh definitely definitely help.
- 18:40Speaker 1: So you know, coming by next weekend, we could be
- 18:45Speaker 1: up you know, two or five or six. But I
- 18:48Speaker 1: don't think it gets good until, you know, October ish,
- 18:54Speaker 1: when some of the foliages down and those first dose
- 18:59Speaker 1: you know, and start coming into ask. So those more
- 19:02Speaker 1: mcture deer are aware of that and start to have
- 19:06Speaker 1: a reason to get up on their feet a little
- 19:08Speaker 1: bit earlier and uh go against their better judgment on
- 19:13Speaker 1: uh traveling through the woods that they know people are
- 19:16Speaker 1: hunting in. All right, Kevin, I'm looking forward to following
- 19:19Speaker 1: in hunts this fall. Good luck this season. Thanks for
- 19:21Speaker 1: joining me, Thanks Spencer Alight and joining us on the line.
- 19:25Speaker 1: Next is Nate Crick in Kansas. Now Nate in Kansas.
- 19:28Speaker 1: What would you say the buck activities been lately? On
- 19:30Speaker 1: a scale of one to ten, I would say the
- 19:32Speaker 1: buck activity has been around a six or seven um.
- 19:37Speaker 1: It has been hired though Kansas and part has been
- 19:41Speaker 1: getting pretty good cold fronts. We've had actually some a
- 19:43Speaker 1: few bounts of really cool weather and so during we
- 19:46Speaker 1: had won during the beginning of October and then justice
- 19:49Speaker 1: last weekend, and during those cold fronts, I've seen significant
- 19:52Speaker 1: increase in gear movement, and I would say during those
- 19:55Speaker 1: cold fronts it could be even up to an eight
- 19:57Speaker 1: or nine out of ten. Now, you guys just recently
- 20:00Speaker 1: a new property there in Kansas, how is your strategy? Uh,
- 20:04Speaker 1: kind of hunting a property for the very first time
- 20:07Speaker 1: in mid October, you aggressive where you sit back and
- 20:09Speaker 1: waiting for the end of the month. We've been we've
- 20:12Speaker 1: been sitting back pretty heavy. Um. We have a soybean
- 20:17Speaker 1: plot with some radishes nix in there as well, and
- 20:20Speaker 1: that's on just the west side of our ground, so
- 20:23Speaker 1: we can access that pretty easily without worrying about bumping
- 20:26Speaker 1: deer getting their betting. UM. We also set up cameras
- 20:30Speaker 1: in the summer months when we were doing some some
- 20:33Speaker 1: other work in there, and we've read a lot of
- 20:35Speaker 1: cameras actually just just keep going throughout the year that
- 20:38Speaker 1: we haven't even touched in the middle of our ground
- 20:40Speaker 1: where we know those deer betting. UM. So we've been
- 20:43Speaker 1: we've been hanging out on the edges really not pushing
- 20:45Speaker 1: in deep. UM. We got lucky just the beginning of
- 20:48Speaker 1: October with UM my brother killing a nice candice buck
- 20:52Speaker 1: and we were just hunting that that bean field. Um,
- 20:55Speaker 1: it was kind of interesting. Our beans were a lot
- 20:58Speaker 1: more green than the properties around us. Think I was
- 21:00Speaker 1: a big help with killing that. He was still kind
- 21:04Speaker 1: of focused on those beans. But um, yeah, we've been
- 21:06Speaker 1: hanging out on the perimeters and we're lucky we have
- 21:09Speaker 1: some cell cameras that are kind of doing the work
- 21:11Speaker 1: in the middle of our property. But yeah, we're really
- 21:13Speaker 1: hanging out until we really see that that buck activity increase.
- 21:18Speaker 1: Are you seeing a lot of signmaking right now? And
- 21:20Speaker 1: what do you do with that info when you find
- 21:22Speaker 1: an area on that property that has a lot of
- 21:23Speaker 1: rubs and scrapes. Yeah, So we actually didn't have like
- 21:27Speaker 1: any sign until um this last weekend when we hunted
- 21:31Speaker 1: that cold front and when I was walking she stands
- 21:33Speaker 1: a few times, I was seeing a lot more rubs,
- 21:35Speaker 1: a ton more basically just flipped on in the last week. So,
- 21:39Speaker 1: um that with that info, I've been moving some some
- 21:43Speaker 1: cameras around from food sources to like more of the
- 21:46Speaker 1: timber on our property. Um. Just this last weekend, I
- 21:51Speaker 1: moved one of our cell cameras to creek crossing with
- 21:55Speaker 1: a lot of rubs around it. Um. And since I've
- 21:58Speaker 1: put that camera out. It has just been it and
- 22:00Speaker 1: lit up all the time by a lot of dos
- 22:02Speaker 1: and bucks using it. So I've really been moving to
- 22:04Speaker 1: cameras around. Um, I haven't been seeing a bunch of
- 22:08Speaker 1: scrapes on our ground more more of the rubs, and
- 22:11Speaker 1: that's been really good info. Um Again, right now, we
- 22:14Speaker 1: haven't really been hunting those areas. We've really been letting
- 22:18Speaker 1: the cameras do the work, like I said. But um,
- 22:20Speaker 1: we know that eventually, once, once it really starts to
- 22:22Speaker 1: amp up and and the russ is gonna be here
- 22:24Speaker 1: before we know it, then we'll be we'll be hanging
- 22:26Speaker 1: the new stands and hunting those rugs and scrape lines,
- 22:29Speaker 1: hunting an area that's so heavily dominated by big agri culture.
- 22:32Speaker 1: How do you say the food source has changed from
- 22:34Speaker 1: now until the rut. Yeah, so we've got we've got
- 22:39Speaker 1: corn and beans around us, a lot of it. Um.
- 22:42Speaker 1: We have a small and plover and turn up a
- 22:45Speaker 1: little food plot, and then we have a bean and
- 22:48Speaker 1: radish plot. And we're gonna leave our beans and rashes
- 22:52Speaker 1: go let them stay all the way through the winter.
- 22:54Speaker 1: But the corn and beans will get harvested, and there's
- 22:57Speaker 1: always a little shift in the deer movement when that happens.
- 22:59Speaker 1: But really, the majority of the property that we hunt
- 23:03Speaker 1: cans is timbered besides our couple acre bean plus, so
- 23:07Speaker 1: we're really gonna be hunting the thick timber. Um. We
- 23:10Speaker 1: have a stream that works through our property as well,
- 23:13Speaker 1: and we know that mature gear bucks will want to
- 23:17Speaker 1: use that as well as to travel travel routes. So
- 23:20Speaker 1: we're really going to move off of the food sources
- 23:23Speaker 1: and into that that thicker, bigger timber where the the
- 23:25Speaker 1: does will be, the betting will be in those bucks
- 23:27Speaker 1: will be uh in there trying to find some doughs. Um.
- 23:29Speaker 1: We also do have um a few stands in the
- 23:33Speaker 1: timber just off of that being field a little bit
- 23:35Speaker 1: because I know big big Bucks won't necessarily want to
- 23:39Speaker 1: be opened in that being field. They want to be
- 23:41Speaker 1: in the timber a little deeper, um, but they want
- 23:43Speaker 1: to get a nose on that being filled for the
- 23:45Speaker 1: doughs that are out there feeding and things like that.
- 23:46Speaker 1: So Yeah, definitely gonna be moving more into the timber
- 23:49Speaker 1: in the next few weeks going forward. Then the next
- 23:52Speaker 1: week or so, what do you think that Bucket TV
- 23:54Speaker 1: is going to be on a scale of one detend
- 23:56Speaker 1: in Kansas. You know, over next week, looking at the weather,
- 23:59Speaker 1: it's not going to be anything crazy for this time
- 24:02Speaker 1: of the year, so I I I'm gonna keep it
- 24:04Speaker 1: at probably about a six or seven. UM. But again,
- 24:07Speaker 1: if if that weather does change, if we see some
- 24:09Speaker 1: cold weather come in and they'll be moving, Um, that's that.
- 24:12Speaker 1: Like I said, that's that first cold front that that
- 24:15Speaker 1: came through early October. Ya, my brother killed a nice buck,
- 24:18Speaker 1: and then just this last weekend there were a lot
- 24:21Speaker 1: of big bucks on the the move and I saw
- 24:23Speaker 1: I saw a really nice buck in our neighbor's field
- 24:26Speaker 1: on on a tree edge. Um, just out in the daylight.
- 24:29Speaker 1: So I don't see it being crazy this week. UM.
- 24:33Speaker 1: I know a lot of guys can't get out and
- 24:35Speaker 1: hunt during the week, but UM, if if it was
- 24:38Speaker 1: up to me, I'd say, hey, this might be a
- 24:40Speaker 1: good week to kind of stay off the ground if
- 24:42Speaker 1: you're not seeing crazy buck movement because I don't see
- 24:44Speaker 1: um any super cold tempts and it might be a
- 24:47Speaker 1: good week to leave that pressure off there for later
- 24:50Speaker 1: October and into the rut. All night. We'll congrat see
- 24:53Speaker 1: you guys for that awesome Kansas Buck he already got down.
- 24:55Speaker 1: Good luck with the rest of the season and filling
- 24:57Speaker 1: another tag. Yeah, thanks, Man's appreciate. And that concludes this
- 25:01Speaker 1: week's episode of Wired Haunts rot Fresh Radio. Thanks it, Josh, Bo,
- 25:06Speaker 1: Kevin and Nate for joining me, and thank you guys
- 25:09Speaker 1: for listening. Good luck to everyone out there trying to
- 25:11Speaker 1: kill wondering this quote unquote October Lowell, I'll be in
- 25:15Speaker 1: the woods and I'm really excited for some of my
- 25:17Speaker 1: first white tail haunts of the season. We'll talk to
- 25:20Speaker 1: you guys next week, but until then, stay wired to hunt.
