Speaker 3: stuff I want to get to in the news this morning.
• 1:48
Speaker 5: Is it just me?
• 1:49
Speaker 3: Or does it seem like this has been the longest
• 1:51
Speaker 3: week ever? I mean, it seems like Friday is never

Speaker 3: going to Maybe it's with the snow and ice and everything,
• 1:58
Speaker 3: and I don't know, it just seems like this is
• 2:00
Speaker 3: been the longest dang week ever. Coming up a little
• 2:02
Speaker 3: bit later on the show, Doctor Casey Sachs is going
• 2:05
Speaker 3: to be joining us to talk about some things going
• 2:06
Speaker 3: on at Bridge Valley, as she does from time to time.
• 2:09
Speaker 3: We spent some time yesterday talking about some proposed changes
• 2:13
Speaker 3: to the high school transfer rule for student athletes in
• 2:16
Speaker 3: West Virginia. One of the folks that's been all about
• 2:18
Speaker 3: that is Delagate Dan of Ferrell out of the thirty ninth.
• 2:20
Speaker 3: He is an educator involved in the streaming business of
• 2:22
Speaker 3: high school sports in addition to, as I said, being
• 2:26
Speaker 3: a legislator here in the Mountainstead. We're going to talk
• 2:28
Speaker 3: to him and a little bit on the weather. Plus
• 2:31
Speaker 3: I got some things I want to get into, as
• 2:32
Speaker 3: I said in the news, and maybe maybe maybe a
• 2:35
Speaker 3: little davatorial coming up a little bit later on the show.
• 2:38
Speaker 3: I do want to quickly remind you, though, that today
• 2:40
Speaker 3: is not technically a federal holiday. However, because of the
• 2:44
Speaker 3: death of Jimmy Carter, the Postal Service is choosing to
• 2:48
Speaker 3: have a day of rememberance, so there will be no
• 2:50
Speaker 3: postal service today, so please keep that in mind. A
• 2:54
Speaker 3: couple of days ago, we talked about this five million
• 2:57
Speaker 3: dollar grant that's going to the Putnam County Development Authority
• 3:00
Speaker 3: of the state's Economic Enhancement Grant Fund. Now, it is
• 3:03
Speaker 3: certainly needed because we have a housing shortage, a big one,
• 3:07
Speaker 3: not only a Putnam County but really the entire Canal Valley.
• 3:10
Speaker 3: The advantage value if you will region, you know, I
• 3:13
Speaker 3: mean all there's there's a definite housing shortage. Morgan Tenty
• 3:17
Speaker 3: is executive director of the Putnam County Development Authority and
• 3:20
Speaker 3: she joined us. Now, Morgan, good morning, welcome to the show.
• 3:23
Speaker 6: Good morning days. Thank you for having me on this cold.
• 3:25
Speaker 3: Yes, thank you for being here on this cold morning.
• 3:28
Speaker 3: Bundle up for this phone call. Okay, because it's cold,
• 3:31
  Speaker 3: it is cold.
• 3:31
  Speaker 6: We got it.
• 3:32
Speaker 3: So why the need for all this? And when we
• 3:35
Speaker 3: say housing shortage in the and again you're with Putnam
• 3:39
Speaker 3: County obviously, but this is an entire advantage value thing.
• 3:44
Speaker 3: How did we get here? And why why are we
• 3:47
Speaker 3: even talking about needing more housing? And we'll focus on
• 3:50
  Speaker 3: Putnam County.
• 3:52
Speaker 6: Fantastic question. I will answer it with some numbers. So
• 3:56
Speaker 6: in November of twenty twenty four, the split to sale
• 4:01
Speaker 6: price ratio for houses sold in Putnam County was one
• 4:05
Speaker 6: hundred percent and the FEDAN days on the market was
• 4:08
Speaker 6: six days. If that doesn't prove a housing need, I
• 4:12
Speaker 6: don't know what else does.
• 4:13
  Speaker 7: Day.
• 4:14
Speaker 6: You know, we knew a couple of years ago that
• 4:16
Speaker 6: we were going to need more houses, but we didn't
• 4:19
Speaker 6: know how to quantify it, right. We knew it, Economic developers, realtors,
• 4:24
Speaker 6: we all knew it, but we didn't know how to
• 4:25
Speaker 6: quantify it. So that's when we all pitched in together
• 4:28
Speaker 6: as a region ended this national housing study. So it's
• 4:31
Speaker 6: actually for Tanna Counties. Any references the other day on
• 4:34
Speaker 6: your show, Dave, and I appreciate that, you know, the
• 4:36
Speaker 6: housing study studies stated that we needed about ten thousand
• 4:40
Speaker 6: four rate units and twenty thousand four sale units in
• 4:43
Speaker 6: the entire ten county region. Now Here in Putnam County,
• 4:46
Speaker 6: we know that we have an excellent school system, we
• 4:50
Speaker 6: have high safety ratings, then we have great amenities. We're
• 4:53
Speaker 6: just close to everything. I know a lot of people.
• 4:55
Speaker 6: One spouse works in Huntington and one spouse works in Charleston,
• 4:58
Speaker 6: so we understand that we have a very big demand
• 5:02
Speaker 6: here and that we are supporting the workforce for some
• 5:05
Speaker 6: of the counties around us. But getting that housing study
• 5:08
Speaker 6: helped us quantify it and then actually go after the demand.
• 5:13
Speaker 3: So how much of the and you talked about and
• 5:14
Speaker 3: here we're talking to Morgan Tanning from the Putnam County
• 5:16
Speaker 3: Development Authority, how much of this can you attribute to
• 5:20
  Speaker 3: New Core?
• 5:22
Speaker 6: So we had a housing shortage before newcret but so
• 5:25
Speaker 6: that New Core has definitely expanded that. I was really
• 5:29
Speaker 6: blessed to be one of the first people that some
• 5:32
Speaker 6: of the New CORE managers met when they came to
• 5:34
Speaker 6: West Virginia. You know, they did their homework before they
• 5:38
Speaker 6: moved here, Dave. You know, they're coming from Indiana, North Carolina, Texas,
• 5:42
Speaker 6: and if they have kids, the first thing they looked
• 5:44
Speaker 6: at was, well, if I'm moving to West Virginia in
• 5:47
Speaker 6: this area, where's the best schools for my kids? So
• 5:50
Speaker 6: we knew that coming in, and then it kind of snowballed.
• 5:53
Speaker 6: You know, they started telling each other about Putnam County's
• 5:56
Speaker 6: great school system. But that's not to say that they're
• 5:58
Speaker 6: not still living in Kapolca on a Mason County. We've
• 6:01
Speaker 6: just seen that demand firsthand here. And you know, Frankly,
• 6:04
Speaker 6: now I'm friends with some of them. I've seen them
• 6:06
Speaker 6: at the grocery store. It's been really cool to see
• 6:08
Speaker 6: new faces in our community.
• 6:10
Speaker 3: And where is this money coming from?
• 6:12
  Speaker 4: Morgan?
• 6:13
Speaker 6: So the money that we received on Monday's from the
• 6:16
Speaker 6: Economic Enhancement grant. Now that was set aside by Governor
• 6:20
Speaker 6: Justice from American Rescue Plan Act money, and it filters
• 6:25
Speaker 6: through the West Virginia Water Development Authority, so that it's
• 6:29
Speaker 6: federal money, but it's going through you know, Governor Justice
• 6:33
Speaker 6: set it aside, and the Water Development Authority is the
• 6:35
Speaker 6: entity that it's flowing through.
• 6:38
Speaker 3: I'm going to throw something out here at you to
• 6:40
Speaker 3: sort of play Devil's advocate here for a moment. As
• 6:44
Speaker 3: someone and the listeners have heard me say this, Morgan
• 6:46
Speaker 3: is someone who lives in the heart of Days Valley.
• 6:48
Speaker 3: I know the problems that we have already with traffic.
• 6:51
Speaker 3: I don't like it either, but it's the sign of
• 6:54
Speaker 3: a growing area. So what would you say to people
• 6:57
Speaker 3: who have said, and I'm sure you've heard it too,
• 6:59
Speaker 3: that we already have enough people in Putnam County? What
• 7:02
Speaker 3: would you say to that? You would laugh? You would
• 7:05
Speaker 3: laugh at that what you just did?
• 7:07
Speaker 6: I laugh? Yeh can That'd be my response. When was
• 7:11
Speaker 6: the last time you went to a city that was
• 7:13
Speaker 6: growing and they didn't have construction day gross And you know,
• 7:18
Speaker 6: I laugh because economic development in West Virginia is really hard.
• 7:23
Speaker 6: And shout out to all of my other economic developer
• 7:26
Speaker 6: friends in West Virginia because no matter what you do
• 7:30
Speaker 6: days people are mad. You bring in manufacturing, people don't
• 7:33
Speaker 6: want it. You bring in housing, people don't want it.
• 7:36
Speaker 6: You know, it's it's you can't ever win. And ultimately,
• 7:42
Speaker 6: our job at the Putnam County Development Authority is to
• 7:44
Speaker 6: drive development, increase the tax base, and increase jobs. And frankly,
• 7:49
Speaker 6: I feel like we're doing that. And in order to
• 7:52
Speaker 6: have more jobs, you have to have somewhere for those
• 7:55
Speaker 6: people to live. I also want to clarify that I
• 7:58
Speaker 6: have been working in hand them with the Putnam County
• 8:01
Speaker 6: Board of Education. They are on board with our growth
• 8:05
Speaker 6: as well. The schools have been told half capacity.
• 8:09
Speaker 8: You know, we are.
• 8:09
Speaker 6: We are doing everything that we can to grow the
• 8:11
Speaker 6: community in the right way, and you know, it's unfortunate
• 8:16
Speaker 6: if people don't feel that that growth is positive.
• 8:19
Speaker 3: Talking to you, the Morgan Tending from the Putnam County
• 8:21
Speaker 3: Development Authority, The Dave Allen Chilling five, any life is
• 8:24
Speaker 3: brought to you, part by Morgan and Morgan with more
• 8:26
Speaker 3: than twenty billion dollars recovered. They believe that when you're injured,
• 8:28
Speaker 3: you deserve more Morgan to Morgan, America's largest injury law firm.
• 8:32
Speaker 3: All right, so we know the money is coming. Explain
• 8:35
Speaker 3: specifically how it's going to be used. It's going to
• 8:37
Speaker 3: be used for housing. We get that, but how's it going?
• 8:39
Speaker 3: How's this going to work?
• 8:41
Speaker 6: The money is coming to Putnam County Development Authority and
• 8:44
Speaker 6: we are going to use it for infrastructure. So it
• 8:47
Speaker 6: will go to a public utility. It will go to
• 8:51
Speaker 6: uh sewer water in extending any type of service lines.
• 8:57
Speaker 6: It will also go to the infrastructure for roads. This
• 9:01
Speaker 6: is not cash going to a developer. This is money
• 9:04
Speaker 6: that is going to come to the development Authority and
• 9:07
Speaker 6: go to a public utility partner. Now, this project, in particular,
• 9:11
Speaker 6: we're looking at two different locations. We're looking at Hurricane
• 9:14
Speaker 6: and we're looking in Fraser's Bottom. And this is going
• 9:17
Speaker 6: to help us attract a builder who can come in
• 9:21
Speaker 6: and build a quantity at the speed we need houses.
• 9:25
Speaker 3: And I think that's very important to point out is
• 9:28
Speaker 3: that we simply at this point don't have the infrastructure
• 9:32
Speaker 3: to be able to accommodate these and when this group
• 9:35
Speaker 3: it's a group out of Maryland I understand called Stonewall
• 9:37
Speaker 3: Capital is planned on coming in to build these homes
• 9:39
Speaker 3: as you said, in the Fraser's Bottom area and also
• 9:41
Speaker 3: in the Hurricane area. This is going to go toward that.
• 9:45
Speaker 3: But it's not just for that, because once you get
• 9:47
Speaker 3: that infrastructure in place, Morgan, as you well know, this
• 9:50
Speaker 3: is what you do for a living, that's when you
• 9:51
Speaker 3: start attracting more stuff to come in. Once the infrastructure's there.
• 9:55
Speaker 6: Correct, it's not just an empty field that you can sell,
• 9:59
Speaker 6: right Dave. There's so many things that have to line
• 10:01
Speaker 6: up for an economic development deal like this to happen.
• 10:03
Speaker 6: First of all, we don't always own the property. It
• 10:06
Speaker 6: comes down to who who owns property, who's willing to
• 10:09
Speaker 6: sell it and at what price? And then after that
• 10:12
Speaker 6: you've got to unfold you know, are there archaeological issues,
• 10:15
Speaker 6: is it at a flood point? Do you have the
• 10:16
Speaker 6: utilities there? There's a lot to get a project onto
• 10:20
Speaker 6: a piece of grass, and I know that sounds maybe
• 10:24
Speaker 6: over simplistic, but honestly, there's a lot that goes into
• 10:27
Speaker 6: seeing within the dirt so this is going to extend
• 10:30
Speaker 6: utilities onto two different pieces of property to get those
• 10:34
Speaker 6: developers here. And yes they are Stonwall Capital, they are
• 10:37
Speaker 6: an infrastructure development group. They will come in, they will
• 10:41
Speaker 6: build out the infrastructure, the roads, the storm water, all
• 10:45
Speaker 6: of that, and then they will then work with a
• 10:48
Speaker 6: vertical builder to buy their lot and build basically vertically
• 10:53
Speaker 6: so houses, town homes. I'm really excited that they're coming
• 10:58
Speaker 6: with a few different product types. Also going to be
• 11:00
Speaker 6: building some single story villas for maybe those that are
• 11:04
Speaker 6: empty nesters that don't need a three thousand square foot
• 11:07
Speaker 6: home but don't want two story living. So they're going
• 11:10
Speaker 6: to be able to bring a mixture that we just
• 11:13
Speaker 6: currently don't have here.
• 11:14
Speaker 3: And that's what we need, is a is a mixture.
• 11:17
Speaker 3: Had attached to the show from someone the other day
• 11:19
Speaker 3: that lives in Putnam County and they were saying that
• 11:21
Speaker 3: we needed some of these single family homes. There's there's
• 11:23
Speaker 3: it's not just town homes. As you said, there are
• 11:25
Speaker 3: town homes. There are those that are going to want
• 11:27
Speaker 3: a town home, but we're going to need some single
• 11:30
Speaker 3: family homes and we need more homes. As you said,
• 11:33
Speaker 3: we sometimes forget that as people get older. I'm getting older.
• 11:37
Speaker 3: You know, my my home thankfully when we when we
• 11:39
Speaker 3: my wife and I bought our home a few years ago,
• 11:42
Speaker 3: one of the things we attracted to this particular home
• 11:45
Speaker 3: is that it was one level. Doesn't affect me now,
• 11:48
Speaker 3: but it is going to affect me probably she and
• 11:50
Speaker 3: I like in twenty years. And so a lot of
• 11:52
Speaker 3: times you have that some older folks that simply don't
• 11:54
Speaker 3: want to have that big old home that they raised
• 11:56
Speaker 3: two or three kids.
• 11:57
Speaker 6: In, kind of in a gridlock. So I'll speak from
• 12:01
Speaker 6: personal experience. You know, my husband and I have two
• 12:04
Speaker 6: young boys. We are in a home that is small.
• 12:09
Speaker 6: It's a single story, great starter home, but you know
• 12:12
Speaker 6: we need more space. Well, we're surrounded by people who
• 12:17
Speaker 6: have too much space. They want to downsize, but they
• 12:20
Speaker 6: don't want to down grade, so they don't really have
• 12:22
Speaker 6: anywhere else to go. And honestly, I have a one
• 12:25
Speaker 6: hundred year old neighbor who lives in a very large,
• 12:29
Speaker 6: two story home, and obviously that's an outlier, but you know,
• 12:34
Speaker 6: we don't we don't have that for those who don't
• 12:37
Speaker 6: want that two story living. So we're excited about that.
• 12:41
Speaker 6: You know, we're aware of some different town homes being
• 12:44
Speaker 6: and apartments being built in the community. We're working with
• 12:46
Speaker 6: those developers as well. But a single family home is
• 12:50
Speaker 6: the most expensive home for a builder to build, not
• 12:53
Speaker 6: to mention you're dealing with the end user and their customization.
• 12:57
  Speaker 6: I mean, it's just not as a profit fit a
• 13:00
Speaker 6: bowl or easy for a developer to build that. So
• 13:03
Speaker 6: in order to get someone to come and build that
• 13:05
Speaker 6: many single family homes, you know that infrastructure money is
• 13:08
Speaker 6: really going to help us get the capacity that we need.
• 13:13
Speaker 3: Morgan, before we let you go, I'm going to give
• 13:14
Speaker 3: you about thirty seconds to sell people on Putnam County.
• 13:17
Speaker 3: I'm a little bit biased. I've lived there, you know,
• 13:19
Speaker 3: for at the end of February will be eleven years
• 13:22
Speaker 3: that my wife and I have lived in Putnam County.
• 13:26
Speaker 3: I love it. I love all the areas and you
• 13:28
Speaker 3: know around here, but I especially have a place for
• 13:30
Speaker 3: Putnam County. Many of us here at the station live
• 13:34
Speaker 3: in the Tays Valley area or somewhere in Putnam County.
• 13:36
Speaker 3: Sell Putnam County to people.
• 13:39
Speaker 6: Putnam County, West Virginia is an amazing place. You are

• 13:49

• 13:57
  Speaker 6: our high schools.
• 13:58
  Speaker 8: You know.
• 13:58
Speaker 6: We also have high state ratings, and we have fantastic
• 14:02
Speaker 6: clarks and amenities. So you get that small town feel
• 14:05
Speaker 6: while still having everything at your fingertips. And we would

Speaker 6: love to welcome you to our community.

Speaker 3: welcome into the show now, as we do from time

• 17:29
Speaker 3: Good morning, Welcome to the show. Doctor.
• 17:31
Speaker 8: Good morning. How are you today?
• 17:33
Speaker 3: Dave doing fine? Hope you had a great holiday season.
• 17:36
Speaker 8: Oh, it's always so nice to be with family. How
• 17:38
  Speaker 8: about you?
• 17:38
Speaker 3: Oh yeah, I had a great holiday season, but I'm
• 17:41
Speaker 3: over the snow. I don't know about you. I know
• 17:43
Speaker 3: you love it, but I'm over. I'm completely over.
• 17:45
Speaker 8: You know it did just start Oh oh, you don't with.
• 17:49
Speaker 3: The winter season or it just started snowing. Is that
• 17:52
  Speaker 3: what you're saying.
• 17:53
Speaker 8: No, No, the winter season will be into this until
• 17:56
  Speaker 8: about mid March.
• 17:57
Speaker 3: Okay, well, thank you for that bit of good news.
• 18:00
Speaker 3: Speaking of the weather, I mean, I know the students
• 18:03
Speaker 3: return to Bridge Valley next week, is that right?
• 18:05
Speaker 8: That's right? We come back on Monday, all right?
• 18:07
Speaker 3: So I mean I get your office staff going on
• 18:10
Speaker 3: in there. It does create some problems from time to time, though,
• 18:13
Speaker 3: even when the students aren't there, when you have these weather.
• 18:16
Speaker 8: Issues, right, you know, it's never ideal to change your plans.
• 18:19
Speaker 8: But of all the weeks to do it, this was
• 18:21
  Speaker 8: a good choice.
• 18:22
Speaker 3: I guess. Indeed. Now I've got a couple of things
• 18:25
Speaker 3: I want to talk to you about. You have an
• 18:26
Speaker 3: open house for the WIN Academy. Is that today or tonight?
• 18:31
  Speaker 8: Tonight?
• 18:31
  Speaker 3: Okay?
• 18:32
Speaker 8: Yes, so tonight right after work. We've got forty five
• 18:35
Speaker 8: people who have already signed up, and you're still welcome
• 18:38
Speaker 8: to come. If you're on here in the radio this
• 18:40
Speaker 8: morning and thinking this could be good for your high
• 18:42
Speaker 8: school student. It's an opportunity for folks to bring in
• 18:45
Speaker 8: their students in here about the WIN Academy and why
• 18:48
Speaker 8: that might be a good fit for their high school experience, and.
• 18:50
Speaker 3: Explain what the WIN Academy is for those that may
• 18:52
Speaker 3: not have heard you talk about this.
• 18:54
Speaker 8: So it's a public high school for juniors and seniors
• 18:57
Speaker 8: who are interested in workforce focused education. Specialize in getting
• 19:01
Speaker 8: students ready for their nursing degree or for their advanced
• 19:04
Speaker 8: manufacturing degree and really thinking about how do you do
• 19:08
Speaker 8: intentional career training in high school? So it really accelerates
• 19:12
  Speaker 8: that degree path.
• 19:14
Speaker 3: And so that isnight. What time is it right after work?
• 19:17
Speaker 3: I know what time is it again?
• 19:19
Speaker 8: It starts at five.
• 19:20
Speaker 3: Starts at five o'clock and it's there on campus. Are
• 19:23
Speaker 3: you currently doing open registration for the spring semester?
• 19:26
Speaker 8: I understand we are, so for everybody, all the adults
• 19:29
Speaker 8: listening today. If you've decided that you're ready to go
• 19:32
Speaker 8: back to school and change your life, it's a great
• 19:34
Speaker 8: time to do it. Open registration is happening right now
• 19:37
Speaker 8: for the spring semester and classes start on Monday.
• 19:40
Speaker 3: And you know, that's an interesting thing that you brought
• 19:42
Speaker 3: up was adults going back. What are some of the
• 19:45
Speaker 3: things that you find that maybe some they used to
• 19:48
Speaker 3: call them. I don't know if they still use this
• 19:49
Speaker 3: term or not, but they used to call this non
• 19:52
Speaker 3: traditional when when they're choosing maybe to go back to
• 19:55
Speaker 3: school after some time, what do you see that they're
• 19:57
Speaker 3: going into what seemed to be some of the more
• 19:59
  Speaker 3: popular things.
• 20:01
Speaker 8: So, our average age at Bridge Valley is actually thirty.
• 20:05
Speaker 8: What used to be called a non traditional student in
• 20:07
Speaker 8: higher education is pretty traditional here at Bridge Valley. And
• 20:11
Speaker 8: what we find is that people have some college potentially
• 20:13
Speaker 8: and no degree, and they're ready to come back and finish,
• 20:17
Speaker 8: or they've been working in a job that they feel
• 20:19
Speaker 8: like just isn't what they want to do for the
• 20:21
Speaker 8: rest of their lives and they're ready for a career change.
• 20:23
Speaker 8: And so we see a lot of people come into
• 20:25
Speaker 8: health science, a lot in it, and quite a few
• 20:28
Speaker 8: in manufacturing. Those are our three big program areas.

• 20:52
Speaker 8: That's right. We're really excited, all right.
• 20:55
Speaker 3: And what exciting things do we have as far as
• 20:57
Speaker 3: when the classes get going next week.
• 21:00
Speaker 8: One of the things that we have going next week
• 21:02
Speaker 8: is something that's called Dining with the Deans. It gives
• 21:04
Speaker 8: our students at each of our different locations and opportunity
• 21:08
Speaker 8: to have lunch with the academic leaders from campus. So
• 21:10
Speaker 8: we really want to make sure that students who are
• 21:12
Speaker 8: in manufacturing, for example, have the opportunity to know who
• 21:16
Speaker 8: Norm Mortensen is. Norm is our dean from manufacturing, and
• 21:19
Speaker 8: he's fantastic. He has decades of experience in manufacturing and
• 21:23
Speaker 8: lots of connections in the area and he's really intentional
• 21:27
Speaker 8: about helping students get jobs. So we want to make
• 21:29
Speaker 8: sure that students know who he is so that they
• 21:31
Speaker 8: can get that extra help.
• 21:33
Speaker 3: And it's one of the things that I love that
• 21:34
Speaker 3: you folks do at Bridge Valleyes. You're always doing these
• 21:36
Speaker 3: things like this, like dining with the deans and you're
• 21:39
Speaker 3: having open houses and getting the communities involved as well.
• 21:42
Speaker 3: That's part of the success of not only Bridge Valley,
• 21:45
Speaker 3: but it's also a part of the success of the
• 21:49
Speaker 3: success of the students that take part in the programs.
• 21:52
Speaker 8: Yeah, it's one of our really most important pillars is
• 21:55
Speaker 8: that we connect right to the community that we're in
• 21:57
Speaker 8: and that the people who come to school here are
• 21:59
Speaker 8: getting jobs right here in our community.
• 22:01
Speaker 3: All right, it's always a pleasure to talk to you,

• 22:54
Speaker 3: We spent some time with the Voice of high School
• 22:57
Speaker 3: Sports in West Virginia, Fred Persinger, yesterday, talking about some
• 23:01
Speaker 3: proposed changes to the high school transfer rule, and Fred
• 23:05
Speaker 3: seemed to be hopeful that some changes may happen. Dana
• 23:07
  Speaker 3: Ferrell's got a, I think a unique perspective on this
• 23:09
Speaker 3: because not only is he in the legislature, but he's
• 23:12
Speaker 3: also an educator by trade, and he spent some time
• 23:15
Speaker 3: with his company doing a lot of streaming of various
• 23:17
Speaker 3: high school events around the state of West Virginia. So
• 23:20
Speaker 3: he's I think uniquely qualified to speak on that. I
• 23:24
Speaker 3: know he's very passionate about it as well. Friend of

• 23:43
Speaker 3: maybe we'll have some samples on the show tomorrow. We'll

• 23:52
Speaker 3: and our good friend Rob Real from her sister station
• 23:54
Speaker 3: ninety six to one KWS. You know, anytime we bring
• 23:56
Speaker 3: Rob in, he's always got something special going on. It
• 23:59
Speaker 3: is time. We are getting close, just a couple of
• 24:01
Speaker 3: weeks away from I guess what would be the second annual.
• 24:04
Speaker 3: I think I'm right about that WVRC Media at Charleston
• 24:08
Speaker 3: Sock Drop and this is something that Rob kind of
• 24:11
Speaker 3: put together to help out the less fortunate in the community.
• 24:14
Speaker 3: And much like we did with the Turkey Drop, here
• 24:16
Speaker 3: in a couple of weeks we're gonna set up shop
• 24:18
Speaker 3: out on our parking lot here at eleven eleven Virginia Street,
• 24:20
Speaker 3: dacent Charleston. And basically what we are going to do
• 24:23
Speaker 3: is we are just going to give an opportunity for
• 24:27
Speaker 3: you to drop off some socks to us to be
• 24:30
Speaker 3: given to those in need this cold, cold winter. And
• 24:34
Speaker 3: maybe we should have done I don't know, a little
• 24:36
Speaker 3: bit sooner, because the high temperature tomorrow when you get
• 24:38
Speaker 3: up and go to work, it's going to be about
• 24:39
Speaker 3: three or four degrees. So we'll get it to him.
• 24:42
Speaker 3: Though we'll get it to him. I'm gonna do something
• 24:45
Speaker 3: a little bit different right now. I got a little
• 24:47
Speaker 3: bit of extra time before we bring in delicate Dana Ferrell.
• 24:49
Speaker 3: And you know, from time to time, something something happens
• 24:53
Speaker 3: in the news. I see something that leads me to
• 24:56
Speaker 3: want to opine on a particular issue, and this is
• 25:01
Speaker 3: certainly the case this morning. I call these things davatorials.
• 25:04
  Speaker 3: And I don't put that into preview because I don't
• 25:06
Speaker 3: know how in the heck you would spell davatorial. But anyway,
• 25:11
Speaker 3: just hear me out on this. Phil Kapler, the esteemed columnist,
• 25:16
Speaker 3: and I used that term very tongue in cheek with
• 25:18
Speaker 3: the Charleston Conzette. Mail had a post on X the
• 25:23
Speaker 3: artist formally known as Twitter, last night that he needed
• 25:28
Speaker 3: to point out that neither the new Senate President or
• 25:32
Speaker 3: the majority leader in the legislature are college graduates. Now
• 25:37
Speaker 3: correct statements. There, correct statements. And he pointed out that
• 25:42
Speaker 3: when Democrats last controlled the Senate that the Senate President
• 25:48
Speaker 3: had a law degree and the majority leader was a
• 25:52
Speaker 3: Rhode scholar. Again facts, But as I read this on
• 25:58
Speaker 3: X last night, I thought, how elitist does this come off?
• 26:05
Speaker 3: And this is not new for this gentleman. He felt
• 26:10
Speaker 3: the need for some reason previously to point out that
• 26:13
Speaker 3: the outgoing Senate President, Craig Blair, also was not a
• 26:17
Speaker 3: college graduate, as if being a college graduate is the
• 26:23
Speaker 3: be all end all. And look, you know, I am
• 26:27
Speaker 3: not against higher education. I just finished a segment with
• 26:31
Speaker 3: doctor Casey Sachs of Bridge Valley. Bridge Valley a sponsor
• 26:35
Speaker 3: of this show, and I appreciate them. I am not,
• 26:37
Speaker 3: by any stretch of the imagination anti education. Sometimes those
• 26:41
Speaker 3: of us that tend to be a little bit more
• 26:42
Speaker 3: conservative are labeled by people as being anti educator. I
• 26:46
Speaker 3: am one hundred percent not anti education, higher education or
• 26:50
Speaker 3: anti education, lower education for that man. I'm I'm not.
• 26:52
Speaker 3: I'm not. But when I read that statement last night,
• 26:58
Speaker 3: I thought, how well elitist does that come off sounding like?
• 27:05
Speaker 3: And you just angered a great number not that he
• 27:09
Speaker 3: cares a great number of not only your readers, but
• 27:15
Speaker 3: also the people in West Virginia in general. And it
• 27:19
Speaker 3: was a statement of fact. I get that. Somebody pointed
• 27:22
Speaker 3: out on Ax well it's a fact. Yeah, it is
• 27:24
Speaker 3: a fact, But why is that relevant to anything? It
• 27:31
Speaker 3: just comes again, that term keeps popping up my head.
• 27:35
Speaker 3: It just comes off as being so elitist, and it
• 27:38
Speaker 3: just goes to show you out of touch that a
• 27:42
Speaker 3: lot of these people are with the general population. And
• 27:46
Speaker 3: I'm going to go one step further. It shows you
• 27:49
Speaker 3: why the left continues to lose ground. They just don't
• 27:54
Speaker 3: get it, and it further erodes, in my opinion, the credit.
• 28:01
Speaker 3: And someone pointed out that not having a degree. This
• 28:05
Speaker 3: was not mister Cabler that did this. Someone else pointed
• 28:07
Speaker 3: out that not having a degree lessens your decision making skills.
• 28:14
Speaker 3: I mean, are you kidding me? Right now? I would
• 28:18
Speaker 3: put the decision making skills of a coal miner or
• 28:22
Speaker 3: a gas worker or whatever against a whole lot of
• 28:27
Speaker 3: master's degree holders and PhDs that I've met in my life.
• 28:31
Speaker 3: And as I'm going to give a shout out to
• 28:33
Speaker 3: my good friend Art Tom who pointed this out to me,
• 28:37
Speaker 3: not that they would care, but Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg,
• 28:44
Speaker 3: Henry Ford, Ralph, Lauren Oprah. None of these people had
• 28:51
Speaker 3: a college degree, and I think most would say that
• 28:55
Speaker 3: they probably turned out okay. Again not I ain't crapping
• 28:59
Speaker 3: on college educations, okay at all. I'm just saying that
• 29:03
Speaker 3: two things can be true at one time, and when
• 29:05
Speaker 3: you make statements like that, it to me just comes
• 29:09
Speaker 3: across as being very very elitist. My two cents, Texas Day,
• 29:20
Speaker 3: thank you for putting Cavaler in this place. That's not
• 29:22
Speaker 3: exactly what I was what I was doing, I'm just
• 29:26
Speaker 3: not my intention. I mean, this is you know, I'm
• 29:29
Speaker 3: not gonna get off on that. Text says Dave Trump
• 29:34
Speaker 3: said he would get rid of all the snow just
• 29:36
Speaker 3: in a nuke up, a detonated and it would all melt.
• 29:39
  Speaker 2: Well.
• 29:39
Speaker 3: Let me tell you, As I was sliding out of
• 29:42

Speaker 3: that he felt the need, mister Capler to point out

• 33:21
Speaker 3: what I should maybe clarify before we move on is
• 33:24
Speaker 3: the comment is fact okay, the fact that you need
• 33:28
Speaker 3: to point it out, and somebody, I think even I
• 33:31
Speaker 3: think he even said something to the effect of what
• 33:35
Speaker 3: is elitist about that? I think the elitist part is
• 33:39
Speaker 3: is that you think that you have to have those
• 33:41
Speaker 3: skills in order to be an effective leader. That's what
• 33:44
Speaker 3: I took as being elitist about that. Let me bring
• 33:49
Speaker 3: in our good friend, Delegate Dana Ferrell. How are you, sir, Well,
• 33:54
  Speaker 3: Good morning, Dan.
• 33:55
Speaker 5: I'm doing very well.
• 33:56
Speaker 3: Thank you for being here. You're surviving all this nice
• 33:59

• 34:01
Speaker 5: I just came in. I had to walk the dog
• 34:02
Speaker 5: this morning, and I tell you, any skin that's exposed
• 34:05
Speaker 5: to this very long it's going to bite. So and
• 34:09
Speaker 5: I'm not a big fan of winter, but Hey, I
• 34:11
Speaker 5: guess you know that they said the bad times make
• 34:13
Speaker 5: the good times better.
• 34:15
  Speaker 3: So I agree. I agree.
• 34:16
Speaker 5: One this summer, I.
• 34:18
Speaker 3: Kind of like, I mean, I'll say this, I kind
• 34:20
Speaker 3: of like having four seasons. I mean, I I really
• 34:24
Speaker 3: I was telling my wife the other day on over
• 34:26
Speaker 3: the weekend, I said, yeah, maybe we'll maybe I should
• 34:29
Speaker 3: be looking at Florida, but I will take this, uh
• 34:32
Speaker 3: an occasional inconvenience over dealing with a hurricane any day
• 34:35
Speaker 3: of the week. But thats just me.
• 34:36
Speaker 5: That just me. You sound like my wife. And I said, yeah,
• 34:39
Speaker 5: you know, just all. But it's so pretty, but not
• 34:43
  Speaker 5: after a day.
• 34:44
  Speaker 4: I got it.
• 34:45
Speaker 3: Hey, Delegate, we spent some time yesterday talking about the
• 34:48
Speaker 3: transfer rule as it pertains to high school sports. Fred
• 34:50
Speaker 3: and I discussed it yesterday and you can go back
• 34:53
Speaker 3: and listen to that conversation, say it, mentioning this to
• 34:56
Speaker 3: the listeners now or anything else on the show, w
• 34:58

• 35:01
Speaker 3: personal ones are of the station. On Tuesday, high school
• 35:05
Speaker 3: athletic directors delegate from round the state met with some
• 35:08
Speaker 3: lawmakers through the Joint Standing Committee on Education to discuss
• 35:12
Speaker 3: and air out their concerns, and there are plenty. Delegate Pharah,
• 35:16
Speaker 3: I know you have been all over this thing, as
• 35:19
Speaker 3: I mentioned, as I was kind of previewing it a
• 35:22
Speaker 3: little bit earlier on the show. You know, in addition
• 35:24
Speaker 3: to being a legislator, you're also an educator by trade.
• 35:27
Speaker 3: You also do a lot of with high school sports
• 35:29
Speaker 3: as far as streaming and things of that nature. Go,
• 35:31
Speaker 3: take us back to the original changes that were made,
• 35:35
Speaker 3: where we were, where we are now, and where we
• 35:37
  Speaker 3: are going forward.
• 35:39
Speaker 5: Okay, yeah, just a brief summary re cap of everything,
• 35:44
Speaker 5: and that is you know, I'll give it back when
• 35:47
Speaker 5: a first team into the legislature, a first term that
• 35:50
Speaker 5: bil to to implement the transfer of policy that we
• 35:55
Speaker 5: have had come out of the Senate to previous years
• 35:59
Speaker 5: and died in the House. We had to do it
• 36:02
Speaker 5: over there, and so it was obvious that the House
• 36:05
Speaker 5: had no flavor for this. And I think if you
• 36:08
Speaker 5: look at the two chambers, the House is probably closer
• 36:12
Speaker 5: to the ground to the people, because you know, we
• 36:14
Speaker 5: have a smaller area. I mean, I'm able to meet
• 36:17
Speaker 5: and talk to my constituents in the grocery store and
• 36:19
Speaker 5: they know it'll be my first name. So I think you know,
• 36:22
Speaker 5: we have a different look at different issues than the
• 36:25
Speaker 5: Senate would. I think of forefathers designed it that way.
• 36:27
Speaker 5: But anyhow, this came over and it would die in
• 36:30
Speaker 5: the House. So consequently, a couple of years ago, when
• 36:33
Speaker 5: the last day of session, at the last hours, this
• 36:39
Speaker 5: what was already a dead bill again was amended into
• 36:43
Speaker 5: another popular bill that they understood this house would not
• 36:51
Speaker 5: mend on on the last day a week lose the
• 36:52
Speaker 5: entire bill. So that's how it got across. I basically
• 36:56
Speaker 5: likened it to a parasite that had to live off
• 36:59
Speaker 5: of something else to get through. And I think a
• 37:01
Speaker 5: lot of the in the House had to hold their
• 37:03
Speaker 5: nose and vote this in order to get to one
• 37:05
Speaker 5: bill through. And then we were left. I mean, and
• 37:07
Speaker 5: I warned at the time and even wanted the governor, hey, uh,
• 37:10
Speaker 5: this is going to be a problem. And I spent
• 37:13
Speaker 5: thirty years, as you said, in public education and coaching
• 37:16
Speaker 5: and still involved heavily with sports, and so you know,
• 37:20
Speaker 5: we see, you know, look at what's going on with
• 37:22
Speaker 5: the college landscape with this, and I don't think it's
• 37:25
Speaker 5: wicky further, you know, is that what we really want
• 37:27
Speaker 5: to happen at at the high school level, and.
• 37:32
Speaker 3: I think we've already seen it to a certain extent.
• 37:34
Speaker 3: I don't have the numbers in front of me right now,
• 37:35
Speaker 3: but I know Brad pointed it out as part of
• 37:37
Speaker 3: his story wv metronews dot com. I went over the
• 37:40
Speaker 3: numbers yesterday with Fred. What really astounded me was the
• 37:43
Speaker 3: number of games that went into the the from the
• 37:47
Speaker 3: second half and beyond with a running clock, meaning that
• 37:50
Speaker 3: the score was so out of control that both both coaches,
• 37:54
Speaker 3: both coaching staffs said, just let the clock run. Man.
• 37:57
Speaker 3: You know, if we have timeouts, we have changed possessions, whatever,
• 38:00
Speaker 3: just let it run and let's just get out of
• 38:02
Speaker 3: here without getting anybody killed, basically.
• 38:04
Speaker 5: Right, And you're correct, And I mean there's just the
• 38:07
Speaker 5: imbalances we knew this would create. You know, we're there
• 38:10
Speaker 5: in the beginning and we've seen it play out. And
• 38:13
Speaker 5: you know, I said from the beginning, I don't want
• 38:16
Speaker 5: to fault any individual player or their parents that think, hey,
• 38:21
Speaker 5: you know, I want to do what I think is
• 38:22
Speaker 5: best for my child. Nobody's fault from that. Individually. You
• 38:26
Speaker 5: could argue that makes sense, but collectively we have what's
• 38:30
Speaker 5: going on when you put it together and I gave
• 38:34
Speaker 5: us the numbers on Sunday afternoon their Key Education Committee meeting,
• 38:39
Speaker 5: and I'm sure it was Monday. Four hundred and thirty
• 38:44
Speaker 5: three trans fall transfers the first year, four hundred and
• 38:47
Speaker 5: thirty two last year. I mean, we're well over eight
• 38:50
Speaker 5: hundred some transfers just in the fall in football, atlone,
• 38:53
Speaker 5: not county, basketball and other sports. And you know, you've
• 38:57
Speaker 5: got teams that are benefiting from it, but they are
• 39:00
Speaker 5: few and far between, and then you have the majority
• 39:04
Speaker 5: that are suffering from it. And uh, you know, I know,
• 39:07
Speaker 5: just I can tell you here. You know, in my community,
• 39:09
Speaker 5: I represented System of High School, our school which had
• 39:13
Speaker 5: been a playoff team over the last decade, you know,
• 39:18
Speaker 5: year and year out. It has went zer for ten
• 39:22
Speaker 5: in the last two years straight. And when the all
• 39:25
Speaker 5: state teams were announced, two of our players from this
• 39:28
Speaker 5: area that had transferred out were listed as All State
• 39:33
Speaker 5: at their positions. So you see, you know how that
• 39:37
Speaker 5: the talent moves and said, I'm not faulting what a
• 39:40
Speaker 5: parent does and thinks what's best for them, but what
• 39:43
Speaker 5: it does for the community, and uh, and for the
• 39:46
Speaker 5: rest of the players that are left behind, for the
• 39:49
Speaker 5: players that are at the school where a player transfers
• 39:53
Speaker 5: in and now they know they their parents. They have
• 39:55
Speaker 5: given blood, sweat and tears to earn to get to
• 39:58
Speaker 5: a point where they might they go, I want to
• 40:00
Speaker 5: get to start, and then suddenly somebody transfers in and
• 40:03
Speaker 5: you're at the bench. They're not going to be happy.
• 40:06
Speaker 3: I had that discussion with somebody in the office yesterday
• 40:08
Speaker 3: and again we're talking with Deli good Dane of Ferrell.
• 40:10
Speaker 3: I said, you know, you teach your kids. And I'm
• 40:12
Speaker 3: not a parent, but i'm you know, but but you
• 40:14
Speaker 3: teach your kids early on hard work determination. You know,
• 40:18
Speaker 3: you go to the practice, you spend all summer going
• 40:20
Speaker 3: to the various camps, whatever sport that you're in, and
• 40:22
Speaker 3: you do what you're supposed to do. And you get
• 40:25
Speaker 3: up to let's say eleventh grade, maybe the summer after
• 40:27
Speaker 3: your eleventh grade year, and you're thinking, all right, this
• 40:29
Speaker 3: is it's all going to pay off, and suddenly another
• 40:32
Speaker 3: kid transfers in, and let's be honest, nobody. I mean
• 40:36
Speaker 3: people move. I mean I moved a couple of times
• 40:38
Speaker 3: as a kid when I was a kid in public school.
• 40:40
Speaker 3: I get that people move, But you do all the
• 40:43
Speaker 3: things that you're supposed to do. And then you have,
• 40:46
Speaker 3: you know, another kid that just transfers in and all
• 40:48
Speaker 3: about winning a championship. That kid starts over you. That's
• 40:52
Speaker 3: not the fault of the kid that transferred in. I'm like,
• 40:54
Speaker 3: you don't get me wrong about that, but that sends
• 40:58
Speaker 3: a heck of a message I would think to young people,
• 41:00
Speaker 3: would it not? And that's not a positive message?
• 41:04
Speaker 5: And they, you know, I would argue, let's get right
• 41:06
Speaker 5: down to the core issue of what's at stake here,
• 41:09
Speaker 5: and that's the value system that we are encouraging in
• 41:12
Speaker 5: our young people. Do we want a system that encourages
• 41:16
Speaker 5: us to be for them to be part of something
• 41:18
Speaker 5: bigger than themselves, to be part you know, to put
• 41:22
Speaker 5: their friends, their teammates, their school, in the community first,
• 41:27
Speaker 5: or do they put themselves first? And you know that
• 41:30
Speaker 5: that's goes back down to core values and which of
• 41:34
Speaker 5: those two do we want to encourage in our young
• 41:38
Speaker 5: people as they moved through their education in the system.
• 41:41
Speaker 5: And I just you know that's as a state, As
• 41:44
Speaker 5: a state, we've always proud of ourselves or prided ourselves
• 41:48
Speaker 5: in being community driven. You know, we come just in
• 41:52
Speaker 5: situations we come to the aid of each other, our neighbors,
• 41:55
Speaker 5: we help out. You know, the community is bigger than this,
• 41:58
Speaker 5: you know, some of them. Of the individual well, and
• 42:01
Speaker 5: I think you know we're but the legislature getting involved
• 42:05
Speaker 5: setting up a system that encourages Like I said, I
• 42:07
Speaker 5: don't fault any individual, but should we be encouraging this?
• 42:12
Speaker 5: And I think you know this all did that?
• 42:14
Speaker 3: So all right, Well, what do you see going forward?
• 42:17
Speaker 3: I know you guys just gabbled in yesterday and now
• 42:20
Speaker 3: you're out till February the twelfth. We get ready to
• 42:23
Speaker 3: have the inauguration of the governor and so on and
• 42:25
Speaker 3: so forth, but you'll be back. Do you anticipate, Delegate,
• 42:28
Speaker 3: that anything's going to happen this session?
• 42:30
Speaker 5: Oh? Yes, I think we're at a point now where
• 42:34
Speaker 5: I think this session we will see something. And encouraging
• 42:37
Speaker 5: thing is, I know, the last year or so, you know,
• 42:40
Speaker 5: I've been leading the fight out of the House, and
• 42:42
Speaker 5: I think that you know, the problem was this bill
• 42:44
Speaker 5: originated in the Senate, and it was the Senate even
• 42:48
Speaker 5: last year that we felt, you know, was like well
• 42:50
Speaker 5: you know, and to their credit, they said, hey, look,
• 42:52
Speaker 5: you know this is just went on a year. Let's
• 42:56
Speaker 5: give this some time and see how it's going to
• 42:57
Speaker 5: play out. And true to the word, several of them said, hey,
• 43:01
Speaker 5: look we've given it time. Now we've looked at the numbers,
• 43:04
Speaker 5: and yeah, we need to we need to step back
• 43:06
Speaker 5: in and creak this thing or make some changes. And
• 43:10
  Speaker 5: that's where we're at. I think. Obviously, that was a
• 43:12
Speaker 5: joint committee on Education on Monday that heard the testimony
• 43:17
Speaker 5: from the athletic directors, so you had senators and delegates
• 43:23
Speaker 5: in that same committee listening in, and I think the
• 43:25
Speaker 5: overwhelming sentiment is, yes, you know, we've got a problem.
• 43:28
Speaker 5: We need to make some changes. So I suspect we'll
• 43:31
Speaker 5: be sitting down with both elegance and senators together to
• 43:36
Speaker 5: draft a bill that addresses the situation. We may not
• 43:40
Speaker 5: go entirely back to where we were before, but I
• 43:43
Speaker 5: think you'll see some type of a compromise in between
• 43:46
Speaker 5: that hopefully. You know, obviously the goal is to make it,
• 43:49
Speaker 5: make it work for everybody, and as we do that,
• 43:53
Speaker 5: you know, our plan is to hopefully have that bill
• 43:55
Speaker 5: introduced in the Senate this time instead of the House,
• 43:58
Speaker 5: and then if it comes out of you if they
• 43:59
Speaker 5: get out at the Senate, and I'm very very confident
• 44:02
Speaker 5: that we'll get it through the house.
• 44:04
Speaker 3: All right, Donegan Dana Fair. Always a pleasure to have
• 44:06
Speaker 3: you on the show, my friend, be careful out there,
• 44:08
Speaker 3: bundle up and watch it and walk in the dog.
• 44:11
Speaker 3: Yeah yeah, yeah, yeah yeah.
• 44:12
Speaker 5: Go ahead your previous segment. I just got to say,
• 44:14
Speaker 5: when it comes to either there's two things. There's wisdom
• 44:18
Speaker 5: and there's knowledge. One is gained in the classroom. The
• 44:21
Speaker 5: other one's gained through life experiences. And you know, if
• 44:24
Speaker 5: I had to choose, I think anybody had to choose,
• 44:25
Speaker 5: I'll choose wisdom over knowledge any day of the week.
• 44:28
Speaker 3: All Right, Donegan Dana fairl I appreciate you, man. We'll
