Transcript
- 0:08Speaker 1: Hello, Welcome to another episode of Inside the Tape. On
- 0:12Speaker 1: Inside the Birds, it's Jeff Mosher Adam Kaplan and of
- 0:14Speaker 1: course it is our tape breakdown master Greg Cosell. And
- 0:19Speaker 1: the Eagles keep Greg busy and dig it into the
- 0:22Speaker 1: tape because they've made even more moves since the last
- 0:25Speaker 1: time we did an episode. They made a trade to
- 0:27Speaker 1: get Jalen Phillips from the Miami Dolphins and edge rusher.
- 0:31Speaker 2: We'll get into that.
- 0:32Speaker 1: We'll get Greg's tape breakdown, and then real quick, you know,
- 0:35Speaker 1: because the Eagles play the Packers next. We'll get it
- 0:37Speaker 1: a little bit into the Packers' offense and why they're
- 0:40Speaker 1: so checkle on high at times, and Greg has some
- 0:43Speaker 1: tape observations on the Packers' offense. We won't go too
- 0:46Speaker 1: much because we got a pregame show later in the week,
- 0:49Speaker 1: but we will give you a little We'll wet the
- 0:50Speaker 1: appetite a little bit for Eagles Packers on Monday night.
- 0:54Speaker 1: So Greg, it's no stranger any of us are to
- 0:58Speaker 1: the Eagles making as many moves as poss well. They
- 1:00Speaker 1: bring in Jalen Phillips. You've watched some Dolphins safe you
- 1:04Speaker 1: know about Phillips. I'm sure you studied them coming out
- 1:06Speaker 1: of college.
- 1:07Speaker 3: I did. What do you think, Well, he was my
- 1:09Speaker 3: favorite edge player coming out of college. Oh really, So
- 1:13Speaker 3: I really liked Jalen Phillips. You know, he he's a
- 1:15Speaker 3: fascinating guy because when he came out of high school
- 1:18Speaker 3: in California and went to UCLA, initially he was the
- 1:22Speaker 3: number one recruited player in the country, not just in
- 1:24Speaker 3: his position, but in the country. He's a freak at
- 1:27Speaker 3: you know, for a high school player. And then he
- 1:29Speaker 3: left football for a year. I think that was it
- 1:32Speaker 3: concussion based or something happened, and he chose to leave
- 1:35Speaker 3: football for a year and then ended up at the
- 1:38Speaker 3: U and started to really show the trades that made
- 1:41Speaker 3: him the number one recruited player in the country. And
- 1:45Speaker 3: I thought he was the best edge player in a
- 1:47Speaker 3: draft class that did not have a lot of great
- 1:49Speaker 3: edge players, if I recall, but I thought he was
- 1:51Speaker 3: the best one. Now, before he had the knee injury.
- 1:56Speaker 3: It was a knee injury, right or was it a kill?
- 1:58Speaker 1: He had achilles and he well I was going to
- 2:00Speaker 1: say he's got both he's got an achilles.
- 2:02Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, he was. I thought he was on his
- 2:05Speaker 3: way to being one of the better, more dominant type
- 2:08Speaker 3: edge players in the game. He flashed big time traits.
- 2:12Speaker 3: I mean, you're dealing with a guy that's that's sixty
- 2:14Speaker 3: five to sixty five. He's not. He's not one of
- 2:16Speaker 3: those you know, two hundred and forty pound guys. He's
- 2:18Speaker 3: a legit big guy. I don't think he's quite the
- 2:22Speaker 3: same player he was, but I think he still is
- 2:26Speaker 3: capable of rushing the quarterback. And in Miami, I don't
- 2:29Speaker 3: know if the Eagles would see him this way. There
- 2:32Speaker 3: were third down and pure pass rush situation snaps where
- 2:36Speaker 3: he lined up inside, So I don't know. Again, you know,
- 2:39Speaker 3: we really have no idea. Obviously, they're looking for pass
- 2:42Speaker 3: rush because they don't really have an edge pass rush,
- 2:46Speaker 3: and I would think that's the reason they made the trade. Look,
- 2:49Speaker 3: I know they still have two third round picks in
- 2:51Speaker 3: the twenty twenty sixth draft, but they did give up
- 2:53Speaker 3: a third round pick. Third round pick is not a
- 2:56Speaker 3: throwaway pick, no, So so they believe he can. I mean,
- 3:00Speaker 3: and obviously he's gonna play next you know, next week
- 3:03Speaker 3: against Green Bay on Monday Night, because he's been playing
- 3:06Speaker 3: all along. He's not injured, so you know, the number
- 3:09Speaker 3: of snaps he plays, We have no idea, but you know, look,
- 3:13Speaker 3: it was pretty obvious to everybody that they need they
- 3:17Speaker 3: need edge rush. You know, we don't know about Nolan Smith.
- 3:20Speaker 3: You know when I guess he's due back in a
- 3:21Speaker 3: couple of weeks, give or take, but you might take
- 3:23Speaker 3: time for him to ramp up. You know, he's been out. Yeah,
- 3:26Speaker 3: and who knows if he'll be the same player. We
- 3:28Speaker 3: don't know the answer to that. So they need edge
- 3:31Speaker 3: pass rush and that's why the trade was made.
- 3:34Speaker 4: Greg on Jaylen flips like this year, the pressure numbers
- 3:36Speaker 4: are solid, right, but give us from a trade standpo, Okay,
- 3:40Speaker 4: you told you know he's a big guy.
- 3:42Speaker 3: Yeah, what what's the talent there? Is?
- 3:44Speaker 5: He a speed rusher? Power?
- 3:45Speaker 3: For me? Let me go back. What year did he
- 3:48Speaker 3: come out? Twenty one? Yeah, I'm going to go back
- 3:51Speaker 3: to my notes because I remember really really liking him
- 3:56Speaker 3: and thinking, wow, this kid's this kid's got a real
- 3:59Speaker 3: chance to be a player. So all right, I said,
- 4:04Speaker 3: his twenty twenty tape showed all the traits and attributes
- 4:07Speaker 3: you look for in an edge defender. By the way,
- 4:11Speaker 3: he was six five and a half two sixty at
- 4:12Speaker 3: the Combine Wow with thirty three in a quarter in Charms.
- 4:16Speaker 3: I said, size, length, athleticism, suddenness, explosiveness, flexibility, power, balance, competitiveness.
- 4:22Speaker 3: He checks all the athletic and physical boxes to play
- 4:25Speaker 3: on the edge in the NFL and be a strong
- 4:28Speaker 3: and potentially elite edge pass rusher with joker attributes. I said,
- 4:32Speaker 3: what consistently stood out watching his college tape was his
- 4:35Speaker 3: suddenness and his balance. He was twitchy with elite movement
- 4:39Speaker 3: and change the direction traits, and he was rarely on
- 4:41Speaker 3: the ground, and those two attributes resulted in Phillips being
- 4:45Speaker 3: an impact player versus both run and pass. I finished
- 4:49Speaker 3: by saying, he is the most explosive edge player in
- 4:52Speaker 3: the twenty twenty one draft class. So I loved him
- 4:55Speaker 3: coming out, and I thought he was moving in that
- 4:57Speaker 3: direction before the injuries derel him.
- 5:00Speaker 1: It sounds like Greg based on your description of him,
- 5:03Speaker 1: and I'm curious also with his time with the Dolphins
- 5:06Speaker 1: if you recall that he's a player that can be
- 5:10Speaker 1: used as a looper, as a stunter twist game. Yes,
- 5:12Speaker 1: Eagles are are doing a little bit more of and
- 5:15Speaker 1: we talked during the bye week with you.
- 5:17Speaker 2: Yes, how that might be beneficial to their defense.
- 5:19Speaker 3: Yes, I mean because he's a flexible athlete. Now, like
- 5:22Speaker 3: I said, I don't you know when you have an
- 5:24Speaker 3: ACL and an achilles, and Achilles is a really hard injury.
- 5:28Speaker 3: I mean ACLS nowadays. I'm certainly not a doctor, but
- 5:30Speaker 3: it's evident that ACLS guys come back from you know. Now,
- 5:34Speaker 3: they obviously sit out for whatever it is, ten months,
- 5:36Speaker 3: eleven months, but they do come back from ACLS. It's
- 5:38Speaker 3: not like you know, thirty forty years ago, where it
- 5:40Speaker 3: just could end a guy's career. You know, But an
- 5:43Speaker 3: Achilles is a tough injury. I mean, so you know,
- 5:47Speaker 3: is he as explosive, Probably not, but he's still I
- 5:51Speaker 3: think because he's he's big and physical, so it's not
- 5:54Speaker 3: as if he just had to rely on flexibility and
- 5:57Speaker 3: ben he is a big, a big guy who does
- 6:00Speaker 3: have some explosive power traits to him.
- 6:03Speaker 1: Right, How would you compare his skill set to what
- 6:07Speaker 1: the Eagles have in Jallex Hunt and in Nolan Smith
- 6:10Speaker 1: as pass rushers.
- 6:11Speaker 3: Well, he's a better pass rusher than both those guys
- 6:14Speaker 3: just in terms of being you know, the guy's been
- 6:16Speaker 3: a pass rusher his whole life, right, you know Nolan Smith.
- 6:20Speaker 3: Nolan Smith, Yes and no. I mean he's always been light,
- 6:24Speaker 3: so even though he's been used on the edge throughout
- 6:26Speaker 3: his career, he's not truly a pass rusher the way
- 6:29Speaker 3: you think of NFL pass rushers. He's developing as time.
- 6:32Speaker 3: He certainly played well down the stretch last year, but
- 6:35Speaker 3: he had to develop how to rush the quarterback at
- 6:38Speaker 3: the NFL level. Jalx Hunt has never rushed the quarterback.
- 6:42Speaker 3: He's learning as a pro. That's a hard thing to
- 6:44Speaker 3: do and it takes time. He certainly has the size
- 6:47Speaker 3: and the athletic movement to one day develop into that.
- 6:51Speaker 3: And my guess is he's making progress, but he's by
- 6:53Speaker 3: no means a natural pass rusher. Jalen Phillips is a
- 6:57Speaker 3: natural pass rusher, and his lanth Jeff is.
- 7:00Speaker 4: I mean, you look at if you're putting an edtructure together,
- 7:03Speaker 4: this is the prototype.
- 7:04Speaker 3: That's what that Jalen Phillips looks like. That guy.
- 7:07Speaker 4: It's yeah, it's one of those things, like Greg was
- 7:10Speaker 4: talking about it before the onset of the two injuries.
- 7:13Speaker 4: You're looking at a guy who stealing was super high,
- 7:17Speaker 4: super high and he was going to be one of
- 7:19Speaker 4: those guys, and good for him though, by the way,
- 7:22Speaker 4: he hasn't missed the game this season. The ironic part
- 7:25Speaker 4: about people talk about, oh, he's injury prone, Well, guess what,
- 7:27Speaker 4: he didn't miss the game in the first two seasons.
- 7:29Speaker 3: Yeah, those two major injuries. One of them.
- 7:31Speaker 5: Where do you think, what have happened against the Jets
- 7:35Speaker 5: like stadium? Yeah?
- 7:37Speaker 1: Yeah, so, but he does have as Greg mentioned, the
- 7:40Speaker 1: history of concussions in college. He also had a moped
- 7:43Speaker 1: accident I believe while he was in college where I
- 7:47Speaker 1: don't know if that's what, but he had a fractured risk.
- 7:49Speaker 2: From something that might have been that.
- 7:51Speaker 1: So he's he's had his share of wear and tear.
- 7:54Speaker 2: I think you're right, and you have.
- 7:56Speaker 3: Because he's only twenty six years old, if I'm not mistaken. Yeah,
- 8:00Speaker 3: so he's not old. And again, obviously he's in the
- 8:03Speaker 3: last year of his contract. We're not worried at this
- 8:05Speaker 3: very moment what the Eagles see down the road. They
- 8:07Speaker 3: need pass rush for this year and they want to
- 8:09Speaker 3: get back to the super Bowl. But assuming that he
- 8:13Speaker 3: comes in and plays well, they could certainly consider signing
- 8:15Speaker 3: him to a longer term deal. From what I understand
- 8:19Speaker 3: because I know people that know him, he's supposed to
- 8:21Speaker 3: be a really good guy. Yes, you know, in all ways,
- 8:25Speaker 3: you know, so he fits. You know, the Eagles like
- 8:28Speaker 3: to believe that they don't, you know, sign bad guys
- 8:30Speaker 3: for the most part. You know, there's always an exception
- 8:33Speaker 3: here or there, you know, every team because not you know,
- 8:36Speaker 3: we're not going to choir practice, so there's always going
- 8:38Speaker 3: to be an exception, you know. But he's supposed to
- 8:42Speaker 3: be a really good guy.
- 8:45Speaker 1: So so let's let's take it this way, because what
- 8:47Speaker 1: I find really interesting about him, Greg, is you were
- 8:50Speaker 1: mentioning his twenty twenty three season was very good.
- 8:53Speaker 2: I believe he.
- 8:54Speaker 1: Had what eight and a half sacks that year, if
- 8:57Speaker 1: I'm not mistaken, in or six and a half in
- 9:00Speaker 1: eight games, right next to like twelve or thirteen.
- 9:03Speaker 2: That was when Vic Fangio was their coordinator.
- 9:06Speaker 3: Correct Vic.
- 9:07Speaker 2: Also, he was playing on a line that had Christian Wilkins.
- 9:11Speaker 1: Who had nine sacks this year and was a very
- 9:13Speaker 1: good player that year. So I wonder, coming over to
- 9:16Speaker 1: this same defense that he's familiar with, playing with a
- 9:18Speaker 1: guy like Jayalen Carter, who's gonna occupy a lot of
- 9:21Speaker 1: double teams will start to bring him back to the players.
- 9:25Speaker 3: Kind of the question is, is we start to talk tactics,
- 9:28Speaker 3: you know, as we see more often than not and Carter.
- 9:32Speaker 3: Word I'm getting is that Carter's healthier now than he's
- 9:34Speaker 3: ever been this season, and you know, everybody believes, even
- 9:39Speaker 3: in the building, that his play has been uneven this year,
- 9:41Speaker 3: which the tape tells you that it's been uneven. You know,
- 9:44Speaker 3: so that's the reality, that's the tape. You know, the
- 9:46Speaker 3: eye in this guy doesn't lie. Well, let's assume Carter
- 9:49Speaker 3: can get back to being you know, even ninety ninety
- 9:52Speaker 3: five percent Carter. Then the question is, since we've seen
- 9:57Speaker 3: teams for the most part slide their center to Carter,
- 10:01Speaker 3: so do we line up Phillips opposite Carter and then
- 10:05Speaker 3: he gets the one on one matchup with the tackle
- 10:08Speaker 3: or of force the offense if they so choose to
- 10:12Speaker 3: chip them to keep someone in, which then starts to
- 10:14Speaker 3: limit their past their their past game concepts. So you know,
- 10:19Speaker 3: we'll see how it all plays out. But you, Adam
- 10:22Speaker 3: hit it right on the head. When you look at Phillips,
- 10:25Speaker 3: you see a guy that just looks like an inch
- 10:27Speaker 3: pass Rusher and and Vic Fanjo knows him, so you know,
- 10:32Speaker 3: obviously I'm sure Vic had a lot to do with
- 10:35Speaker 3: you know, once it became evident that that there might
- 10:38Speaker 3: be a fight or sale in Miami, we'll see what
- 10:39Speaker 3: else happens in the next twenty four hours. Then you know,
- 10:43Speaker 3: the Eagles decided to research it and it came to fruition.
- 10:47Speaker 3: But you know, Vic certainly knows him, and there's no
- 10:50Speaker 3: there's no problem with Phillips, you know, playing hard every snap.
- 10:53Speaker 3: By the way, he's not you know, he plays. I mean,
- 10:56Speaker 3: he's one of those guys.
- 10:57Speaker 2: Hey, it's Jeff Mosher.
- 10:58Speaker 1: And if you have a family in kids at home,
- 11:00Speaker 1: like me, you always want them to be fully protected.

- 11:38Speaker 1: intruder to let them know they're being watched on camera
- 11:40Speaker 1: and police is on the way. And that's how you

- 12:06Speaker 1: That's simply safe dot com slash bird.
- 12:09Speaker 4: Jeff's interesting once they get BG and there will have
- 12:11Speaker 4: to obviously have to see what he's got left and
- 12:13Speaker 4: Olan Smith and Hunt and and Phillips, and we've seen
- 12:20Speaker 4: not that he's going to need to play anymore. Patrick
- 12:22Speaker 4: Johnson probably won't be in the rotation, but he's given
- 12:24Speaker 4: them some good snaps. This here in Uche This is
- 12:25Speaker 4: interesting with him because he showed you could still play.
- 12:28Speaker 4: Now you talk about depth, that's what they've needed in quality.
- 12:31Speaker 3: Somebody doesn't somebody need to get cut.
- 12:35Speaker 2: Yes, that's going to have to happen. There will be
- 12:37Speaker 2: more than one.
- 12:38Speaker 1: Yeah, well they put two guys on, right, but they
- 12:43Speaker 1: still have to activate a couple of guys.
- 12:45Speaker 3: So right, I mean has been put on IR? Who's
- 12:48Speaker 3: the other?
- 12:51Speaker 2: It was Ojelari and uh like and I think of
- 12:54Speaker 2: who else went on IR?
- 12:56Speaker 3: Apps? Apps?
- 12:57Speaker 2: Ops?
- 12:57Speaker 5: Mark second?
- 12:58Speaker 3: Right, Well he's he's not a path rusher, so no, no, no,
- 13:00Speaker 3: But which about Roster Mos? Yes?
- 13:02Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah.
- 13:03Speaker 1: So what will be really interesting, fellas is over the
- 13:06Speaker 1: next two or three weeks as Jalen starts to play
- 13:09Speaker 1: and we see what this pass rush looks like. Was
- 13:11Speaker 1: this move also made with the intent of allowing VIC
- 13:15Speaker 1: to go back to playing a lot of zone and
- 13:18Speaker 1: hoping that the fore man rush gets home because that's
- 13:20Speaker 1: where they really made their money last year.
- 13:23Speaker 2: Everybody remembers the Super Bowl. No blitz is VIC has been.
- 13:26Speaker 1: As Greg has pointed out on this show, many times
- 13:29Speaker 1: blitzeymore playing way more man coverage and at times they
- 13:33Speaker 1: were able to get away with it when it was
- 13:35Speaker 1: Carson Wentz and Jackson Dart at times, and we're not
- 13:38Speaker 1: getting away with it. Cornerback number two was exposed. So
- 13:42Speaker 1: if there's not going to be any more upgrades at
- 13:44Speaker 1: cornerback two, you would think that it would help if
- 13:47Speaker 1: VIC could just rely on a four man rush to
- 13:49Speaker 1: get home and keep a maximum number of guys in coverage.
- 13:52Speaker 3: Well, I think that's the goal, the objective. Until we
- 13:56Speaker 3: see it, we don't know, right And obviously in the
- 13:59Speaker 3: next two game teams they're going to play teams that
- 14:01Speaker 3: will test that significantly, with the Packers and the Lions.
- 14:06Speaker 3: So we're going to see because you know, in an
- 14:09Speaker 3: ideal world, you know, And at this point, we don't
- 14:14Speaker 3: know about Jarry Alexander, you know, And clearly they would
- 14:17Speaker 3: like him to be ready to play at some point
- 14:20Speaker 3: sooner than later and be the corner opposite Queenyon Mitchell
- 14:23Speaker 3: because Jarry Alexander at his best is a higher quality
- 14:28Speaker 3: NFL corner. The problem is he's been injured so much.
- 14:31Speaker 3: It's hard to know at this point what he is.
- 14:34Speaker 3: But there were a couple of years there where you
- 14:36Speaker 3: would you might have said he was a top three
- 14:38Speaker 3: to fourth corner in the league, you know, but we
- 14:40Speaker 3: don't know that. You just don't know, you know, And
- 14:44Speaker 3: he's a swagger guy. Too. I mean, he's one of
- 14:46Speaker 3: those feisty, super competitive guys. You know, he brings a
- 14:49Speaker 3: little bit of being, you know, an a hole, so
- 14:51Speaker 3: to speak. But you like that at the corner position.
- 14:53Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, don't forget.
- 14:55Speaker 1: They've still got ja Corean Bennett to take a look
- 14:57Speaker 1: at him, right right, even a fourth round pick for
- 14:59Speaker 1: him the post, which is also not.
- 15:01Speaker 3: A throwaway pick, you know. So so so we'll see.
- 15:05Speaker 3: I mean, I think Alexander is a fascinating player sort
- 15:09Speaker 3: of in this puzzle that they're trying to put together
- 15:11Speaker 3: on defense. You know, I don't know. Adam could certainly
- 15:17Speaker 3: speak to this way better than I could. And you know,
- 15:20Speaker 3: I don't know the situation in Baltimore why he didn't play.
- 15:23Speaker 3: Was it injury? Was it? You know, Adam, you can
- 15:24Speaker 3: speak conditioning.
- 15:26Speaker 5: They it got to.
- 15:27Speaker 4: The point it's just kind of odd because, as you know, Greg,
- 15:30Speaker 4: there wasn't dire straight to the corner that they were
- 15:33Speaker 4: almost the top four corners are almost all out at
- 15:35Speaker 4: one point, and they wouldn't play.
- 15:37Speaker 5: Him, right, Just let's okay, we'll see what he looks like.
- 15:42Speaker 4: But going back now, you talk about at one point
- 15:43Speaker 4: he was just the top three player corner right, okay,
- 15:47Speaker 4: swagger both attributes, man coverage, zone, hands play both he
- 15:53Speaker 4: can okay, So so yeah, what what are the what
- 15:56Speaker 4: kind of traces did you see?
- 15:57Speaker 5: Abillity to track the ball? Like? What do you love about?
- 15:59Speaker 3: Oh, he's he's one of those guys that has really
- 16:02Speaker 3: good quickness. I mean he's got loose hips, he's quick,
- 16:06Speaker 3: he's explosive. He can play off coverage really well because
- 16:09Speaker 3: he can plant and drive. He had speed to run
- 16:12Speaker 3: with routes. No, he was healthy in his prime. He
- 16:16Speaker 3: was a big time corner without question. It's just it's
- 16:20Speaker 3: been I don't know the last year he was totally healthy.
- 16:22Speaker 3: I didn't look that up, but it seems like it's
- 16:25Speaker 3: been a while.
- 16:25Speaker 1: Yeah, didn't you also play nicol like inside slot for
- 16:29Speaker 1: the Packers of times that?
- 16:31Speaker 2: Uh, maybe two years ago?
- 16:32Speaker 3: I thought, you know, for some reason, I don't remember that.
- 16:35Speaker 3: I definitely remember him playing outside. I'm not saying you're wrong,
- 16:38Speaker 3: I just don't remember.
- 16:39Speaker 1: I think there was one year in particular where maybe
- 16:41Speaker 1: they had some issues there.
- 16:43Speaker 3: I mean, you know, maybe he was still truly injured.
- 16:46Speaker 3: You know. Chuck Pagano now works with the DBS. He's
- 16:48Speaker 3: a dB coaching, and he really likes Alexander, so there
- 16:51Speaker 3: must be something, you know, it's I don't think it's
- 16:55Speaker 3: it's like he's a bad guy kind of thing. I
- 16:57Speaker 3: think that maybe he was still injured, whatever the reason,
- 17:00Speaker 3: they weren't playing him in Baltimore. But I don't think
- 17:03Speaker 3: the Eagles would have made that trade. And for him,
- 17:05Speaker 3: they didn't give up as much obviously, but I don't
- 17:08Speaker 3: think they would have made that trade if he's gonna
- 17:10Speaker 3: be on the shelf for the next month, you know,
- 17:13Speaker 3: I mean they need a corner Mitchell.
- 17:16Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, Well they've got a lot of different options.
- 17:20Speaker 2: Now.
- 17:20Speaker 1: Hey, Philly fans. Game day is stressful enough. Parking, traffic,

- 18:17Speaker 1: Philly fans. Twenty one and up. Let's quickly talk about
- 18:20Speaker 1: the Packers. We had to ask you to break down
- 18:24Speaker 1: just some of their Jordan love in particular. What a
- 18:27Speaker 1: weird kind of season.
- 18:28Speaker 2: I mean, the.
- 18:28Speaker 1: Packers are this sort of viewed as this strong team,
- 18:31Speaker 1: but they've lost to the Browns and then they just
- 18:33Speaker 1: recently lost at home.
- 18:35Speaker 3: Which was a super odd game because they never punted
- 18:38Speaker 3: in eight possessions and they only scored thirteen points, and
- 18:41Speaker 3: they had this great drive to start the game and
- 18:43Speaker 3: then save you on Williams, the rookie wide out fumbolt,
- 18:46Speaker 3: you know, in the red zone, and they just there
- 18:50Speaker 3: were times to start the game and it looked like they
- 18:51Speaker 3: had their rhythm and other times it looked like it
- 18:53Speaker 3: was an odd game. Let's put it that way, and
- 18:56Speaker 3: you know, it's funny because Love threw a pick, you know,
- 18:59Speaker 3: and which was a bad one. It was one of
- 19:02Speaker 3: the few times this year where his sort of reckless
- 19:05Speaker 3: nature popped up, because he hasn't been that guy this year.
- 19:08Speaker 3: He's actually, for the most part, guys been very controlled,
- 19:11Speaker 3: been very calculated. He's become far more efficient. He's he
- 19:15Speaker 3: hasn't been chasing plays. That interception was one of the
- 19:18Speaker 3: few times this year he chased a play that clearly
- 19:21Speaker 3: wasn't there. But he's played for the most part extremely well. Now,
- 19:26Speaker 3: the big question, obviously, the elephant in the room, is
- 19:28Speaker 3: Tucker Craft has done for the year, and Tucker Craft
- 19:31Speaker 3: was a major, major part of everything they did. What
- 19:35Speaker 3: will be very interesting is to see what happens now
- 19:37Speaker 3: with Musgrave because Musgrave. When Musgrave came out of Oregon
- 19:42Speaker 3: and he was hurt too in college's and he's been
- 19:45Speaker 3: hurt at times in the NFL, but he's been healthy.
- 19:49Speaker 3: He's actually in just in terms of pure athleticism. I'm
- 19:52Speaker 3: not saying he's better than Craft, but pure athleticism, he's
- 19:56Speaker 3: got more of it than Craft. And it'll be very
- 19:59Speaker 3: interesting to see see now if he can fill that
- 20:02Speaker 3: role or if they think they need to sort of
- 20:04Speaker 3: make some adjustments. We don't know the answer to that.
- 20:07Speaker 4: Greg and Jeff and I were talking about this and
- 20:10Speaker 4: our I think our Monday show about Craft. If you remember,
- 20:15Speaker 4: everyone talked about Muskrave coming out, not Craft, Musgrave gets hurt,
- 20:19Speaker 4: Craft takes over, and Musgrave never never gets the starting
- 20:21Speaker 4: job back, right. Yeah, So it's just it's fascinating. Now
- 20:25Speaker 4: you've got the injury issues at receiver. So logically, because
- 20:29Speaker 4: crafts out, maybe they would go more to eleven personnel.
- 20:32Speaker 3: But I don't know. They like twelve. I know twelve
- 20:35Speaker 3: and they like the Fitzpatrick kid who plays. Now again,
- 20:38Speaker 3: I'm not we don't know what they're gonna do at it.
- 20:40Speaker 3: So I don't want to say that they're not going
- 20:42Speaker 3: to go to more twelve. They could very well do that.
- 20:45Speaker 4: But what But Jeff, what's interesting is if it depends
- 20:48Speaker 4: on who's available. We don't know about Wicks's calf injury.
- 20:50Speaker 4: Dontavian Wicks, Yeah, and Matthew Golden got hurt. Greg, you've
- 20:56Speaker 4: seen any of Golden, So, yeah, how's he looked?
- 20:59Speaker 3: So it's Golden hurt to the point where he's not
- 21:01Speaker 3: going to play.
- 21:02Speaker 2: I don't know yet yet.
- 21:04Speaker 3: Okay, Golden showed flashes. You know, they're not a team
- 21:08Speaker 3: that feeds one guy, so you know, but Golden has
- 21:11Speaker 3: shown flashes where you go, oh boy, this guy's you know,
- 21:13Speaker 3: because you can see the speed in the movement. It's there.
- 21:16Speaker 3: But they don't focus on one guy. So it's really
- 21:19Speaker 3: hard to say. And obviously Reid won't be back for
- 21:21Speaker 3: this game. He's he was. You know, they were able
- 21:24Speaker 3: to survive because they have so many players, so many receivers.
- 21:28Speaker 3: But you know, obviously, if Golden can't go, if Wicks
- 21:31Speaker 3: can't go, then then you start getting down. You know,
- 21:34Speaker 3: then all of a sudden, you know, you got to
- 21:36Speaker 3: dance with a girl who brung you, and you start
- 21:38Speaker 3: getting to Malik Heath, who's actually not a bad little player,
- 21:41Speaker 3: but you know, then he has to play a lot
- 21:42Speaker 3: more snaps.
- 21:43Speaker 4: And Bo Melton, Bo Melton unfortunate is playing I think
- 21:46Speaker 4: corner So I don't know, Yeah, I think you're.
- 21:48Speaker 2: Just moving back.
- 21:50Speaker 1: Well, let's take a look real quick at some Jordan love,
- 21:53Speaker 1: because he's been just so strangely inconsistent, and he does
- 21:56Speaker 1: have Christian Watson back.
- 21:58Speaker 2: Yeah, right, that is that is a help.
- 22:00Speaker 1: And it seemed like Greg in the first game he
- 22:02Speaker 1: had a pretty good or like Christian hadn't missed you know,
- 22:05Speaker 1: the first six weeks because they were hitting the deep
- 22:08Speaker 1: over pretty good.
- 22:09Speaker 2: Here do you recall this play.
- 22:10Speaker 3: Where's the play where this was almost a reckless throw.
- 22:14Speaker 3: This was one of those where for a second you
- 22:16Speaker 3: kind of think ooh, and but he did get it
- 22:18Speaker 3: over the defender and he hit Watson who ran kind
- 22:20Speaker 3: of a post over type route. Yeah, I remember this play.
- 22:23Speaker 3: This was from two weeks ago.
- 22:24Speaker 1: Right, and then Watson is lined up in at the
- 22:28Speaker 1: bottom of the screen.
- 22:29Speaker 3: Yeah, he's he's the plus split wide receiver to the
- 22:32Speaker 3: white side of the field. Right, and see, I know
- 22:34Speaker 3: why he throws this ball. See look right now, look
- 22:37Speaker 3: at look where Love is. He actually froze it perfectly.
- 22:39Speaker 3: And look at the deep safety. He sees him squatting
- 22:43Speaker 3: facing forward and he feels that he's not in position
- 22:46Speaker 3: to play over the top, which he's not. And that's
- 22:48Speaker 3: the way they teach it. So that's why he turned
- 22:51Speaker 3: this loose. Yep, I understand exactly why he turned it loose.
- 22:55Speaker 3: And he got it there. Look, he got it there.
- 22:58Speaker 2: That's not that's not throw a ton of guys can
- 23:01Speaker 2: make in this league. So that was He's a top.
- 23:03Speaker 3: Five to six guy in terms of pure physical traits.
- 23:06Speaker 1: Yeah, but I like how you said it was at
- 23:08Speaker 1: first looked a little somewhat reckless, because as we go
- 23:10Speaker 1: through some clips you will see kind of that that
- 23:13Speaker 1: common thread of some of these throws are reckless.
- 23:17Speaker 3: He's going to turn a loose now, you know he
- 23:19Speaker 3: But again this year, I think he's he's calmed down
- 23:22Speaker 3: a bit, and for the most part, he's not been
- 23:24Speaker 3: that way. If I'm not mistaken. The interception he threw
- 23:26Speaker 3: this past week was only his third one of the season.
- 23:28Speaker 3: You know, a lot of people had this sense of
- 23:31Speaker 3: him because his first year as a starter, which was
- 23:34Speaker 3: three years ago, the first seven eight games, he really struggled.
- 23:38Speaker 3: He you know, he had to sort of learn how
- 23:39Speaker 3: to play quarterback in the NFL, and he was very
- 23:42Speaker 3: reckless and undisciplined. And I think people have this sense, now,
- 23:45Speaker 3: oh that's who he is. He's not really that guy. Now.
- 23:48Speaker 3: He will make aggressive throws, There's no question about that.
- 23:51Speaker 3: And I guarantee that every dB coach in the dB
- 23:54Speaker 3: room says, hey, he's gonna throw us one, but he
- 23:57Speaker 3: doesn't really do that very often.
- 23:59Speaker 1: Right here was another thirty yard and Watson now there,
- 24:03Speaker 1: this is a reduced splits right with two tight ends.
- 24:05Speaker 2: This is something I believe you were just saying.
- 24:07Speaker 1: The Packers do a bit of yeah yeah, and then
- 24:11Speaker 1: looks like the Steelers are gonna run.
- 24:13Speaker 3: Well, this is notice where Watson is. Watson releases inside
- 24:17Speaker 3: because this is going to be, if I'm not mistaken,
- 24:19Speaker 3: a either sail cross or a post cross, and he's
- 24:22Speaker 3: going to hit him on the cross or right yep, yep.
- 24:24Speaker 3: And so they do this intentionally because corners aren't going
- 24:28Speaker 3: to go that far inside. So he's going to get
- 24:31Speaker 3: a free release into his route and he can get
- 24:33Speaker 3: across the field quicker because he's coming from inside. This
- 24:36Speaker 3: is actually a cool concept that you see the Rams
- 24:39Speaker 3: do this a lot with Pooka. They bring him inside
- 24:41Speaker 3: and you release inside, whether it's a tight end or
- 24:44Speaker 3: even the tackle sometimes. So this is actually pretty cool
- 24:47Speaker 3: because when you run, when you run a post cross
- 24:52Speaker 3: or a sail cross, an alert for that are reduced
- 24:55Speaker 3: splits because you want to get a guy across the
- 24:58Speaker 3: field quicker.
- 24:59Speaker 2: Right, which he gets right here, he steps up climbs right.
- 25:04Speaker 3: That's just that's just a beautifully schemed play and they
- 25:08Speaker 3: got the exact right coverage, which they probably knew they
- 25:10Speaker 3: were going to get because it's cover three.
- 25:13Speaker 2: By the way. One quick thing to show people who
- 25:15Speaker 2: are watching. And we talked about Jillen Hurts going.
- 25:18Speaker 1: Under center more even though in the past we've heard
- 25:20Speaker 1: Jalen doesn't really love it, doesn't love having his back
- 25:23Speaker 1: to the defense. And we've shown that when Jillen Hurts
- 25:26Speaker 1: goes under center, he hands it off a little differently
- 25:29Speaker 1: than what you see right now with Jordan Love, whose
- 25:32Speaker 1: back is completely right now to the defense. Hurts does
- 25:35Speaker 1: a little bit more of a side pivot faith right
- 25:38Speaker 1: handoff that doesn't take his eyes off the defense the
- 25:42Speaker 1: way it did here for Jordan Love.
- 25:44Speaker 2: Just thought that was a little interesting.
- 25:46Speaker 3: I mean, they do a decent amount of play action.
- 25:50Speaker 3: Love is in the top ten in terms of play action.
- 25:53Speaker 3: I'll tell you in a sec what the under center
- 25:55Speaker 3: stuff is. I can tell you that in a sec
- 25:57Speaker 3: if they do a lot of that the under centers stuff,
- 26:00Speaker 3: Uh hold on, let's.
- 26:02Speaker 2: See while you research that will go. We'll also take a.
- 26:05Speaker 3: Look good amount. I mean, you know, he's not near
- 26:08Speaker 3: the top, but a decent amount forty seven dropbacks of
- 26:12Speaker 3: under center play action.
- 26:13Speaker 2: Oh yeah, that's a decent amount. Yeah, Now this was early.
- 26:17Speaker 1: You pointed this out in your notes against the Panthers
- 26:20Speaker 1: where and he loves to unleash it, like you said,
- 26:22Speaker 1: but he misses as far as seeing his tight end
- 26:26Speaker 1: and he winds up dumping it off to Josh Jacobs
- 26:28Speaker 1: here instead of seeing the time.
- 26:30Speaker 3: Oh yeah, this this was the first play of the game. Yeah,
- 26:32Speaker 3: I was. I was surprised at this because again, you
- 26:35Speaker 3: never know how things are taught, but it's you know,
- 26:38Speaker 3: he kind of looked right at him, and it seemed
- 26:40Speaker 3: to me that they got exactly the right coverage for
- 26:43Speaker 3: this route because if you see, it's Musgrave who's actually
- 26:46Speaker 3: gonna run kind of the the over route here, and
- 26:49Speaker 3: he's he's wide open.
- 26:52Speaker 1: Look at it right at the forty yep and doesn't
- 26:54Speaker 1: look like him, I mean he's and he boots that way.
- 26:58Speaker 2: I mean, might have been a touchdown.
- 27:00Speaker 3: Yeah, this is I was surprised.
- 27:02Speaker 1: Right, Instead, it winds up now luckily for him, he's
- 27:06Speaker 1: got a great weapon and Josh Jacobs, who turned a
- 27:09Speaker 1: lateral pass into a ten yard.
- 27:11Speaker 3: You never know what quarterbacks do that you never know
- 27:14Speaker 3: I mean again, I yeah, it just seemed to me
- 27:17Speaker 3: like that's you know that that the over route was there,
- 27:20Speaker 3: and it was. But again, you know, it's always easy
- 27:23Speaker 3: to be an expert when you don't know how things
- 27:25Speaker 3: are coached. Just like, I love all these people, and
- 27:27Speaker 3: it's you know that I see on social media all
- 27:29Speaker 3: the time, but when they see a quarterback, you know,
- 27:31Speaker 3: obviously doing something at the line of scrimmage, they think
- 27:34Speaker 3: they know exactly what he's doing. And I'm like, come on,
- 27:36Speaker 3: you have no idea what he's doing.
- 27:38Speaker 1: You have no idea, right, I think this here is
- 27:43Speaker 1: the reckless.
- 27:45Speaker 3: This was the long one to watch him.
- 27:47Speaker 2: Oh right, that was actually a great throw.
- 27:49Speaker 3: Fault is a really good throw. Well, he's the kind
- 27:51Speaker 3: of guy too, he can play off his back foot.
- 27:53Speaker 5: He doesn't. This is a crazy play.
- 27:56Speaker 3: This is he doesn't need just you know, to step
- 27:58Speaker 3: up and climb and make these throws. This is another
- 28:01Speaker 3: deep over.
- 28:02Speaker 5: This is this is ridiculous his throw.
- 28:04Speaker 1: Yeah, it seems like I we found a bunch of
- 28:06Speaker 1: deep overs, especially against these The second.
- 28:08Speaker 3: I mean, in a sense, what this is is a
- 28:09Speaker 3: vertical high low I mean because you're you're, you know, you're, you're,
- 28:13Speaker 3: you're throwing this into the third of the corner who
- 28:18Speaker 3: has to play the the the dig ball, so it
- 28:20Speaker 3: becomes a vertical high low so somebody else has to
- 28:23Speaker 3: play it besides the corner because he can't play it,
- 28:27Speaker 3: you know. So so therefore you're getting this against his
- 28:31Speaker 3: safety here he's twenty one. Is Nick Scott?
- 28:33Speaker 2: He's a safety, right Nick Scott from Maryland?
- 28:37Speaker 3: I think no, that's Nick Cross, Nick Cross. That's right,
- 28:41Speaker 3: you had the safety for the It's a very good
- 28:44Speaker 3: player by the way.
- 28:45Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 28:45Speaker 1: Yeah, Now he's under center again on this one off
- 28:52Speaker 1: the back foot.
- 28:53Speaker 3: Again, this was the this was the throw he never
- 28:55Speaker 3: should have made.
- 28:57Speaker 5: No chance, no chance, no chance from the start.
- 29:00Speaker 3: But he doesn't do this very often, you know. Now
- 29:03Speaker 3: Again that doesn't mean he's not going to do it
- 29:05Speaker 3: next Monday night, but he doesn't do it very often.
- 29:07Speaker 1: Sure, But again, Packers, I think that's twelve personnel under center,
- 29:11Speaker 1: so probably a.
- 29:12Speaker 3: High percentage twelve personnel team up to this point. We
- 29:15Speaker 3: have no idea if the craft injury will change that
- 29:18Speaker 3: or not, but they've been a high percent I think
- 29:21Speaker 3: third or fourth or fifth in the league in percentage
- 29:23Speaker 3: of playing twelve personnel.
- 29:25Speaker 1: Right, Yeah, that was one where you just trusted the
- 29:28Speaker 1: arm just a little bit too much.
- 29:29Speaker 3: Yeah, but I mean even trusting the arm there, there's
- 29:32Speaker 3: there were three defenders back. That was not the right decision.
- 29:37Speaker 2: He correct, That was just a a different en.
- 29:41Speaker 3: He threw a dig ball this week too. That was
- 29:44Speaker 3: a great throw.
- 29:47Speaker 1: And this is the last one here. Yeah, I'm curious
- 29:51Speaker 1: to see how Musgrave plays.
- 29:52Speaker 2: Now that that or how much he's involved.
- 29:55Speaker 3: I mean, you guys, remember when Musgrave came out, people
- 29:58Speaker 3: were talking about musk Grave, you know, the athleticism, the movement,
- 30:03Speaker 3: big time. He was considered a you know, unfortunately, got
- 30:06Speaker 3: hurt his last year at Oregon, so he only played
- 30:08Speaker 3: two or three games. And I went back and watched
- 30:10Speaker 3: his tape from the previous year, and I mean he's
- 30:12Speaker 3: a very athletic guy.
- 30:13Speaker 4: You got heard by the unfortunately that that gave Kraft
- 30:17Speaker 4: a chance graftless.
- 30:18Speaker 3: Yep.
- 30:19Speaker 1: You see here the fake jet and motion and kind
- 30:21Speaker 1: of linebackers in.
- 30:23Speaker 3: And that's save On Williams, the rookie who he faked
- 30:25Speaker 3: it to, who's kind of a multi dimensional player. He's
- 30:28Speaker 3: a rookie but he's a multi but again he's playing
- 30:30Speaker 3: off his back foot. He can do this.
- 30:33Speaker 2: Yep.
- 30:33Speaker 1: By the way, I love that route because they they
- 30:35Speaker 1: had Musgrave kind of deep over to the center and
- 30:38Speaker 1: then he sort of does a dipsy do and goes
- 30:40Speaker 1: back to this.
- 30:41Speaker 3: There's a big route that the Kelsey used to run
- 30:44Speaker 3: a lot. This is essentially a levels concept. You know,
- 30:47Speaker 3: where you got the vertical and then you got you
- 30:50Speaker 3: have him running the outcut. It's actually not a bad
- 30:53Speaker 3: job by Is that Wallace the linebacker thirty two?
- 30:58Speaker 2: And I can't tell it might be.
- 31:00Speaker 3: Yeah, he actually does a pretty is Wallace.

- 32:44Speaker 1: All right, so that's what the Eagles a little taste
- 32:46Speaker 1: of what they have to look forward to.
- 32:47Speaker 2: You know, he's got a big arm. He works off
- 32:49Speaker 2: play action, that's out.
- 32:51Speaker 3: He's a very good quarterback. I mean I heard Greg
- 32:54Speaker 3: Olsen talking. I think he did that game and he
- 32:56Speaker 3: you know, he thinks that the Packers should even put
- 32:59Speaker 3: the ball more. Larren loves hands, I mean love. The
- 33:01Speaker 3: bottom line is you're dealing with a really talented guy.
- 33:04Speaker 1: I mean, that's the criticism of him right at him,
- 33:06Speaker 1: that he is a conservative play caller who leans on
- 33:10Speaker 1: the floor.
- 33:10Speaker 3: You mean Matt Lafloor.
- 33:14Speaker 4: Yeah, it's it's what it is when they're totally healthy,
- 33:16Speaker 4: when their pass targets are healthy, because he's he's.
- 33:18Speaker 5: Big on balance, starts with the run.
- 33:22Speaker 4: Whoever the running backs are, it's Jacobs now, but whoever
- 33:25Speaker 4: they had under the floor, they're going to run the football.
- 33:27Speaker 4: But when you look at their past target group is
- 33:30Speaker 4: at one point probably the deepest in the National FOOTB League.
- 33:32Speaker 3: When you have the and the receivers, because they're all
- 33:35Speaker 3: good players, they're all good and even Boat Mountain when
- 33:39Speaker 3: when he was pressing the service a couple years ago.
- 33:41Speaker 5: With all these injuries, he played pretty well.
- 33:42Speaker 4: So but yeah, I'll be as Greg said, it's gonna
- 33:45Speaker 4: be interesting to see what they do because you're now again.
- 33:49Speaker 5: It depends on who's available.
- 33:51Speaker 2: M hmm.
- 33:51Speaker 4: And the game's until Monday night, and we'll learn. Remember
- 33:54Speaker 4: both teams don't have the practice week Starre tro Thursday, right,
- 33:58Speaker 4: that's the first injury reports won't come out to them.
- 34:00Speaker 4: We we won't know quite from an injury standpoint, particularly
- 34:03Speaker 4: with Green Bay, who might be available, and we'll learn
- 34:06Speaker 4: earlier in the week. Like you know what Golden hurt
- 34:08Speaker 4: at them shoulder, I believe, Okay, yeah, shoulder, so yeah,
- 34:14Speaker 4: so we'll see what happens. But yeah, it's a fascinating
- 34:16Speaker 4: game and with all the new guys that Eagles added,
- 34:18Speaker 4: Jeff bring some intrigue, you know it definitely.
- 34:22Speaker 3: You know. A quick point is I've seen the Packers defense,
- 34:26Speaker 3: I think, in every game this season, and they're actually
- 34:29Speaker 3: numbers wise, they're very good. You know, I don't I
- 34:31Speaker 3: looked at numbers after I was done watching their tape today,
- 34:34Speaker 3: you know, I just I watched them against the Panthers,
- 34:36Speaker 3: and I've seen them every game their numbers are good.
- 34:39Speaker 3: They're top five overall. They're really good against the run,
- 34:41Speaker 3: even though they struggled a little this week against the
- 34:44Speaker 3: legendary Rico Dado, who by the way of risingly good.
- 34:51Speaker 3: And their past defense has been solid too. I think
- 34:54Speaker 3: they're in the top five overall. They've got good players.
- 34:57Speaker 3: The concern with them is is at one corner position.
- 35:01Speaker 3: Nixon is a nice player, not a star, but he's
- 35:03Speaker 3: a good player. The question is on the other side.
- 35:07Speaker 3: You know, they're playing a Valentine and they played Nate
- 35:10Speaker 3: Hobbs a bit this week on the outside as well,
- 35:13Speaker 3: So that's the question is what they have on the
- 35:15Speaker 3: other side. But other than that, they've got a lot
- 35:18Speaker 3: of good players well.
- 35:19Speaker 4: Their front their linebacker course tremendously talented, Jeff. The one
- 35:23Speaker 4: issue that teams have with Nate Hobbs was they really
- 35:25Speaker 4: thought because he could play nickel or corner, but a
- 35:28Speaker 4: lot of teams really thought he could be an excellent
- 35:31Speaker 4: nickel corner, nickel dbe I'm sorry, Vic Fangiel all the corners,
- 35:35Speaker 4: but that's the He's kind of a tweener in terms
- 35:38Speaker 4: of Royal and he's been hurt a lot. Talented guy,
- 35:40Speaker 4: good story of development with the Raiders. But yeah, to me,
- 35:43Speaker 4: it's corner. You could go out their corners. I know
- 35:45Speaker 4: Greg said they've played well, but I know one's concerned
- 35:48Speaker 4: about that. No, no, no one is going to not
- 35:51Speaker 4: throw against their You could go against those corners. But
- 35:55Speaker 4: the issue is can you protect That's the issue with
- 35:59Speaker 4: the got a lot of guys.
- 36:00Speaker 3: We'll get into how they used parsons, We'll get into
- 36:02Speaker 3: more of that. Yeah, but they're linebackers. I mean, maybe
- 36:05Speaker 3: Walker has not become the superstar that many thought he would,
- 36:08Speaker 3: but he's still a little bit of a freakish athlete.
- 36:11Speaker 3: And Eddrian Cooper he's an explosive guy now, So I
- 36:14Speaker 3: mean they've got very athletic linebackers.
- 36:17Speaker 1: All right, Fellas, this whole episode was supposed to wet
- 36:19Speaker 1: the appetite, not give the main course.
- 36:21Speaker 3: We will get this.
- 36:23Speaker 1: Yeah, all right, so much it was good, great stuff, Greg,
- 36:27Speaker 1: thanks again, appreciate all the tape breakdown on Jail and Phillips,
- 36:31Speaker 1: Jordan Love and we will again do this more on
- 36:34Speaker 1: the Packers later in the week with the Inside the
- 36:36Speaker 1: Birds pregame show for Greg Cossell and Adam Kaplan. I'm
- 36:39Speaker 1: Jeff Mosher. You've been watching Inside the Tape with Greg
- 36:42Speaker 1: Cosell on Inside the Birds
