- 0:00Welcome back to another episode of Amigos Afraid.
- 0:04This week I'm talking about Black Cats and the bizarre
- 0:07journey behind their reputation, from ancient beliefs to witches,
- 0:11bad luck and everything in between.
- 0:14And this week I'm haunted by the Beast of Jeva Don, an
- 0:17unstoppable monster that brutally slaughtered over 100
- 0:20people in 18th century France, and the real life inspiration
- 0:23behind Teen Wolf's most powerful werewolf.
- 1:03Hey you, are you here for what I think you're here for?
- 1:10Yeah, where? Where's the stuff?
- 1:12The stuff. Yeah, the stuff, you know, the
- 1:15stuff that scares you. Well, it depends what kind of
- 1:18stuff we're looking for. Are you?
- 1:22Are you looking for this stuff? Fuck.
- 1:27Not that scary. I see.
- 1:28OK, OK, well, how about this podcast?
- 1:32It's called Amigos Afraid. That's exactly what I was
- 1:36looking for. Hits the spot every time.
- 1:40All right, another happy customer.
- 1:42Welcome back, everyone. I don't know if I like that, but
- 1:47you can never say no to improv. Jerry gives, I take, I give, he
- 1:52takes, and we meet each other in the middle and that's showbiz.

- 2:31the front. Come on.
- 2:32If you grab under your seat, you're going to find an
- 2:34envelope. And a Bible.
- 2:36Throw the Bible. Keep the envelope.
- 2:39What's in the envelope? Another Bible.
- 2:43PDFAQR code to APDF version of the Bible.
- 2:46Yup, Yup, Yup. Yup, you have the storage space
- 2:49on your phone. Yeah, check it out.
- 2:50Check it out. This is not the a a meeting that
- 2:54you're thinking of. I mean, it is, but it's not that
- 2:56one. It's not that one.
- 2:58How you doing friend? I'm good.
- 3:00I had a really, really, really good weekend.
- 3:02I can't complain. Oh yeah, that's good.
- 3:05Yeah. It wasn't as hot as it is today
- 3:07or this week, but it's definitely, it was a good
- 3:11weekend. It was a good weekend.
- 3:12Anything that you would like to share?
- 3:15I just had a very gay weekend. I spent it almost exclusively
- 3:20with gay people. I think this is the longest I've
- 3:22gone without seeing Jerry or just talking to him.
- 3:26Wow, I'm sorry, I never thought. I never thought of it that way.
- 3:29That's so crazy. Yeah, all my social interactions
- 3:33this week. This weekend we're gay.
- 3:36Saw the boys on Friday for our usual Hangouts and then Saturday
- 3:40I hung out with Yvonne. Wow, Saturday, Yvonne and the
- 3:43boys. But that's cool.
- 3:45We. Were playing video games.
- 3:46Wow. And I was like, Oh my God, we
- 3:47should have like a lamb party. And he's like, wait you down.
- 3:50I'm like, yeah, when can I come over?
- 3:52And he's like, shoot, OK, let me clean and then you can come.
- 3:55So that was nice. Had a really good evening.
- 3:57Had some really good Chinese food dude.
- 4:00Don't talk to me about Chinese food.
- 4:01It was delicious. Sorry I have to just you
- 4:05reminded me of something. I had a craving of Chinese food
- 4:08like a very a big craving and we got some Chinese food.
- 4:12It hit the spot. Craving was satisfied.
- 4:14I didn't eat all of it because I saved it for the next day.
- 4:17The next day comes around, it's lunchtime.
- 4:19I heat it up, put it on a bowl, heat it up, get it, eat it.
- 4:24I think within like 30 minutes I just started feeling like like I
- 4:28started burping my like stomach was kind of hurting and you
- 4:33could imagine the rest. What's the saying?
- 4:39Better out than in, as I always say.
- 4:41Yeah, circa Shrek 2000. And six.
- 4:43Oh yeah, not not the greatest memory.
- 4:48That's really interesting because the only time I've ever
- 4:50had any kind of food poisoning has also been Chinese food.
- 4:53But yeah, it was little I I really wasn't thinking it
- 4:57through. I knew we had left the Chinese
- 4:59food on the table out the entire night.
- 5:01Oh, OK, OK. But in my little like 10 year
- 5:04old brain, it did not process that, yeah.
- 5:06Yeah, I mean I. Think food goes bad if it's not
- 5:08refrigerated? Also, you were.
- 5:09You said you were. How?
- 5:10Old I was like 10 or something. It's food at the end of the day
- 5:13if you're. Hungry.
- 5:13You're hungry. No, it did also taste weird,
- 5:16but. I didn't question it.
- 5:17You just kept going. Yeah, you're like, doesn't taste
- 5:19like earlier. No, violently.
- 5:21I'll for like a good two days. Oh I see, mine wasn't as bad I
- 5:24think I just. You got it out immediately.
- 5:26Yeah, yeah, yeah. Like my, my stomach was like,
- 5:29yeah, no, I don't think this is good, dude.
- 5:30We're not dealing with this. Not today, no.
- 5:32And then Expelliarmus and I felt better.
- 5:36Wow. Although I did break out in like
- 5:37those, like little like. Yeah, you walked in and I
- 5:41thought you were sunburned. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 5:42It's like I get like, like. Burst capillaries or something?
- 5:45Yeah. What's capillary?
- 5:46Who knows, Maybe that's what it. Was it's like surface blood?
- 5:50I guess it's a little I forget I his.
- 5:53Blood vessels popped. So my face was just covered in
- 5:56them, but I'm guessing it's just because of the pressure that you
- 5:59do. He threw up so hard crazy dial
- 6:02into the toilet. Well, my anyways Chinese food
- 6:06experience was not like that. It was delicious, just as good
- 6:09the next day because I did have leftovers.
- 6:11And then Sunday I spent the day once again with the boys.
- 6:14That's. What you're going to say on
- 6:15Sunday, I ate more leftovers. No, I wish I should have had two
- 6:19orders. Wow.
- 6:20No. Sunday I had a pool day.
- 6:21Wow. Yeah.
- 6:22You can say I'm working on my Speedo tan.
- 6:24Is it fair? Not really.
- 6:26Did you wear contacts? No.
- 6:28No though ever since Jose was on this episode I've been scared to
- 6:32put them on. I have them, they're right
- 6:33there. I even bought contact solution.
- 6:35I've just been nervous. Those are new contacts.
- 6:37Yeah. Wow, no.
- 6:40Because I've been nervous, it's so hard to put them on they
- 6:42already. Have.
- 6:43Parasites. Oh my God, Because they've been
- 6:45sitting there in their unboxed parasites.
- 6:48No stop. I don't want to be on my own
- 6:50episode of the podcast. Well.
- 6:52Haunted you My eye infection. No, no, we're going to start the
- 6:55episode and I'm going to be talking to myself the whole
- 6:58time, and my segment is going to be the most recent case of
- 7:02parasitic contact. Yeah.
- 7:07That was it for my weekend. Yours was very eventful I.
- 7:10Had a very busy weekend. I drove down to San Diego, met
- 7:15up with some friends. We ended up going to a Padre
- 7:20game. Shout out to Melissa and Paula,
- 7:24who went with us. The Padres did win thanks to me.
- 7:28Wow. And my manifestation was a
- 7:31pretty boring game up until like the 7th inning when it got good.
- 7:35But it was cool because I haven't been to Petco Park in 10
- 7:38years. So it was very nice just to see
- 7:41how the, the, the, the new additions and what's there.
- 7:44And just walking around downtown San Diego was always, it's
- 7:47always fun. It was really humid, though,
- 7:49which is a first because every time I go down there, it's nice
- 7:52and fresh. There's a good little breeze.
- 7:54But superhumid, so I think it's the beginnings of El Nino.
- 7:58The Super El Nino, we're going to have a wet winter.
- 8:03I mean, it's a lot of snow though.
- 8:04I think it was. I was talking with those and she
- 8:06was like, eventually our summers are going to be like humid, like
- 8:10like Mexico, some parts of Mexico where they're just humid
- 8:12and hot. And then like up north, they're
- 8:15going to get like California summers where they're just like,
- 8:17perfect. And that's on global warming.
- 8:20Yeah, so sad. Anyways, Sunday I went over to
- 8:23my parents, we ate some bomburia that my mom made and we ended up
- 8:28watching their wedding video from 1994.
- 8:32On. VHS.
- 8:33Yeah, it was so. It was so cool.
- 8:35My dad randomly was like, hey, do you want to set up the VHS
- 8:39player? I'm like sure, like what?
- 8:41Are we watching Lion King? Yeah, I was like, which one do
- 8:44you have all my movies from back then?
- 8:45But no, he was like, no, I found the our our wedding video from
- 8:4894. I was like I found both copies
- 8:50and I'm like both copies. One of them was the unedited
- 8:54just full wedding from morning to end.
- 8:56Wow. And then the other one was like
- 8:59the edited the. Professional put together
- 9:01professional transition. Music, literally just the music
- 9:04is a difference. They added some music at the
- 9:07beginning but then the audio for the mass was just gone.
- 9:11Like you couldn't hear it. That video was so choppy.
- 9:14At one point my parents kiss in the video like when they're
- 9:17having their ceremony and then the video just turns away and
- 9:20just gets everyone clapping. What?
- 9:24What? There's a story there, you just
- 9:25have to really analyse it. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 9:28Unprofessionalism. And just 1994.
- 9:31Just yeah. It was really, it was really
- 9:33cool. But it was it was really, it was
- 9:34a trip to seeing them young, I bet in their 20s, like getting
- 9:38married. I'm like, dude, where am I?
- 9:41I wasn't invited. What the hell?
- 9:42Yeah. Hello.
- 9:44You think of me. You.
- 9:44Weren't even a thought yet. Oh, my God, Sometimes my mom
- 9:48will be like in our group chat with me and my brother.
- 9:51Look at this mijo. And it's a picture of her, just
- 9:54young. She's like, oh, your mom was so
- 9:56pretty. Yes, mom, you were.
- 9:59You were. Yeah.
- 10:00Show off a little. That's awesome.
- 10:01You're like, I'm gonna need more, like keep going.
- 10:04Yeah. Pull them from the archives.
- 10:05Yeah, yeah, yeah. Wow.
- 10:07That's that was my weekend. Glad you had a fun weekend.
- 10:10Thank you, I was glad you had a good weekend too.
- 10:13Anything that haunted you this week?
- 10:15Damn friend. So this is another story.
- 10:20What haunted me this weekend. This week was losing my eBay
- 10:25bidding war. What were you bidding on?
- 10:29My docs were officially retired. I retired my docs after.
- 10:32No. In six years, great.
- 10:36Like if you have Docs that you've worn just year after year
- 10:39through everything thick and thin, you know that those are
- 10:43the most comfortable shoes ever. But like I'm talking about these
- 10:46Docs were busted, busted. So it was time I finally got rid
- 10:52of them. And I'm like, you know what?
- 10:54Before I go to the store and pay the full price for the docs, let
- 10:58me check eBay. I've had really, really good
- 11:00luck on eBay recently with other stuff.
- 11:02And I found some some new new docs that were missing the box,
- 11:07but they looked great, all tags and all that good stuff put in
- 11:12my bid. It was like a 12 hour bid.
- 11:15And so I was like, oh, I should know by tomorrow.
- 11:17I think it was the first. And the initial bid was like 30
- 11:19bucks. OK, I was like, why not?
- 11:22It's 30 bucks. I get a notification an hour
- 11:26before the timer runs out that I was out bid.
- 11:30Oh my God. It jumped from 30 to 60 and then
- 11:35for a minute straight this person and I were going back and
- 11:38forth, just increasing the bid. How?
- 11:41Much are they retail? Think they're like 120 plus
- 11:44maybe four. Oh yeah, for docs we started
- 11:48going and I'm talking about like petty ass increments, like a
- 11:51dollar, $1.50 cents. No, I think it was only a dollar
- 11:54actually. So I take it back and it got to
- 11:56the last 10 seconds and we're going back and forth and I'm
- 11:58refreshing the page and I'm trying to do it as fast as
- 12:00possible. And you can increase by like a
- 12:02dollar, five dollars, $10, however much you want.
- 12:05But I'm like, no, I'm trying to get these for as low as
- 12:07possible. At that point they were like at
- 12:0980 something and I had clicked it and in my mind I thought that
- 12:14when you place a bid in the last second, there's like a 10 second
- 12:17buffer for the person to respond if they want to either increase
- 12:21the bid or not. Apparently eBay doesn't do that.
- 12:23So as soon as that timer runs out, bam, done, it's over.
- 12:27The person beat me. No, I'm so sorry.
- 12:30So I've been thinking about those docs I could have got for
- 12:34like 40-50 bucks off. It's OK, they weren't meant for
- 12:38me. I'm glad they got them.
- 12:40I'm going to move on because I've been on another kick
- 12:43recently. What really haunted me this week
- 12:46was not having a cat. Oh my God, I was talking to
- 12:49Andrew about this. I'm in my cat era.
- 12:51For some reason. I'm really like, I just, I want
- 12:53a little Kitty, you know? And I don't know but go off.
- 12:57I see it in my near future and because we're in Summerween and
- 13:01we're already celebrating Halloween in this 90 plus degree
- 13:03weather, I started thinking about the lore behind why Black
- 13:08Cats are considered unlucky or associated with Halloween.
- 13:13So I hit the books, I sat down and I just started going through
- 13:17black cat lore. I found some great articles that
- 13:20are going to be on the website so please check them out.
- 13:23But man, I learned so much and some of this stuff reminded me
- 13:26of things that we've talked about in the past.
- 13:28Really. So today we're talking about
- 13:31Black Cats. I'm so excited.
- 13:33I did not think that there was like lore about it.
- 13:36I mean there has to be, but I feel like I only hear it orally
- 13:40from like person to person. Traditions passed down.
- 13:43OK. Researcher I think most of us
- 13:46have basically inherited the same image of Halloween, a
- 13:50witch, a black cat, and a pumpkin.
- 13:53But that image didn't just appear because Black Cats look
- 13:55creepy. There's a really long history
- 13:58behind why we associate them with, which is bad luck and the
- 14:01supernatural. And what I loved is that the
- 14:04black cat wasn't always a villain.
- 14:07In some of the oldest cultures that had relationships with
- 14:10cats, the exact opposite was true.
- 14:13Take ancient Egypt. Cats had a much more important
- 14:16place in Egyptian society than just being animal people kept
- 14:19around the house. They were associated with gods,
- 14:22goddesses, and cats were particularly connected with
- 14:25Bostet, a goddess associated with protection, the home, and
- 14:30fertility. Whoa, OK, The article Why Black
- 14:34Cats are associated with Halloween and Bad Luck by
- 14:36Elizabeth Yuko. She points out that Black Cats,
- 14:39because of their resemblance to the feline goddess, could
- 14:42actually be honored rather than feared.
- 14:44Already a pretty funny contradiction there.
- 14:46The modern Halloween version tells us that Black Cats are
- 14:50this creature that you should be suspicious of, but one of the
- 14:53culture's most famous for its relationship with cats could
- 14:56look at that same animal and see something divine.
- 14:59The things are getting more complicated once you move into
- 15:02religious traditions of Europe. There wasn't one moment when
- 15:06everyone suddenly decided cats were evil, but there were
- 15:09already supernatural associations surrounding cats.
- 15:12In oldermythologyhistory.com points to the Greek goddess
- 15:17Hekati, who was associated with magic, sorcery, the moon, and
- 15:22witchcraft. I'd shout out to Frenchie
- 15:24because she's, I think she's mentioned she has this goddess
- 15:27before. She described, she's described
- 15:30as having a cat as a pet and a familiar.
- 15:33And that word familiar is important because later European
- 15:37folklore would use the idea of a familiar to describe a
- 15:41supernatural animal companion that assisted a witch.
- 15:44Just like in Dungeons and Dragons.
- 15:45Like in DND, baby, some unfamiliar So you've got this
- 15:48existing connection between cats and magic, and centuries later,
- 15:51European witchcraft beliefs build on that idea.
- 15:55The problem is that during medieval Europe, the Christian
- 15:57Church increasingly viewed witchcraft and other religious
- 16:00practices as threats. And eventually that suspicion
- 16:04wasn't limited to the person accused of witchcraft.
- 16:06The animals around them could have become suspicious too.
- 16:09You're a witch. Your cat's a witch.
- 16:11A horse is a witch. Also in history.com, I know it's
- 16:16crazy. It's just like, Yep, you know,
- 16:17you and your whole you and yours whole household.
- 16:20Yep. Down to the cat, sin, sinners.
- 16:25History.com also quotes author and Wiccan priestess Kuridwen
- 16:29Falling Star, explaining that affection between people accused
- 16:33of witchcraft and animals could itself be interpreted as
- 16:35something diabolical. And if you think about the
- 16:38stereotype that eventually developed, it's usually some
- 16:41older person living somewhat independently surrounded by
- 16:44animals, particularly cats. Oh my God, this is just a baddie
- 16:47living her dream out in the. Woods being independent just.
- 16:50Living life need anyone but my animals.
- 16:53I'm headed that direction. My God, that image didn't come
- 16:56out of nowhere. The animal became part of the
- 16:58accusation, as mentioned. And cats had another quality
- 17:02that probably didn't help them. They don't exactly behave like
- 17:05obedient little servants. A dog hears its name and it
- 17:08comes running. Man's best friend right there.
- 17:12A cat hears its name and sometimes looks directly at you
- 17:15before making the conscious decision to ignore you.
- 17:19History makes the same interesting observation through
- 17:23falling stars. Explanation.
- 17:24Cats, much like woman accused of witchcraft, were perceived as
- 17:28independent and unwilling to simply submit to authority.
- 17:33Obviously that's folklore and social interpretation, not some
- 17:36inherent quality that made cats supernatural.
- 17:39But if you're living in a society where independence
- 17:41itself can make someone suspicious, a creature that
- 17:44wanders wherever it wants, appears whenever it wants, and
- 17:48doesn't seem particularly interested in obeying anyone
- 17:51isn't exactly helping its case. And who doesn't like this men
- 17:56who wrote history men? Who said Man's best friend, man.
- 18:02Ah, yeah, yeah. Once again, there isn't a
- 18:06definitive historical moment where someone said from this
- 18:09point forward witches have Black Cats, but there are some points
- 18:13from the article that it's still unclear exactly when the
- 18:16association between witches and cats narrowed specifically to
- 18:19Black Cats. One possible explanation is
- 18:22actually pretty practical. Black Cats may have been
- 18:25particularly effective night time hunters because of their
- 18:28dark coats making them harder for prey to see.
- 18:31There's another part of this that I think makes a
- 18:33superstition understandable from a historical perspective.
- 18:37So imagine you're living hundreds of years ago without
- 18:40streetlights. You walk outside at night and
- 18:43there is animals moving around that you can barely see.
- 18:47A black cat could move through the darkness without being
- 18:49noticed too easily. You might hear something moving
- 18:52and then see a pair of eyes. That's the scary part, just
- 18:55looking back at you. And then it's gone.
- 18:57Where to go Now we understand what's happening because we know
- 19:01how cats see and move. But if you're living in a world
- 19:03where people already believe witches can use supernatural
- 19:06animals, the darkness makes that belief much easier to accept.
- 19:10History time. Sit down.
- 19:12Grab your notebooks. Oh, Dang.
- 19:13OK. OK, You ready?
- 19:15You have a pencil? Yes.
- 19:17Sure. If you need to use a restroom,
- 19:18raise your hand. OK, Then go to the restroom.
- 19:21No, Sit down. One of the most important pieces
- 19:27of actual historical documentation on June 13th,
- 19:311233. Oh my God.
- 19:34OK, Pope Gregory the 9th issued A papal document called The Box
- 19:39in Rama. There's a medieval document
- 19:42declaring Black Cats as an incarnation of Satan.
- 19:46Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait what?
- 19:49This goes all the way to the top.
- 19:52This got escalated to the boss's desk and they said Yep, Black
- 19:56Cats Satan. Our closest connection to God on
- 19:59earth said it. Here I have this message to
- 20:02throw upon you. These Black Cats, incarnations
- 20:06of Satan. Oh my goodness.
- 20:08OK. Layla Morgan Wilde, author of
- 20:11Black Cats Tell All True Tales and Inspiring Images, states the
- 20:15decree marked the beginning of the Inquisition and church
- 20:18sanctioned heretic and or witch hunts.
- 20:21Initially, it was designed to squash the growing cult of
- 20:24Luciferians in Germany, but quickly spread across Europe.
- 20:30Inquisition, if you if this doesn't ring a bell, was a
- 20:33Catholic judicial system and group of institutions created to
- 20:36investigate, judge, and eliminate heresy, blasphemy, and
- 20:40unapproved religious practices from the 12th to 19th century.
- 20:45Punishments. What right did they have to do
- 20:47this? None.
- 20:48They gave it to themselves. According to Kuridwen Falling
- 20:52Star, the Wiccan priestess and author of Broth from the
- 20:56Cauldron, A wisdom journey through everyday magic.
- 20:58Wow OK. Witches were the pre Christian
- 21:01Pagan practitioners of Europe. Stuff like a tongue twister.
- 21:05Amazing. Although the early Christian
- 21:07Church in Europe coexisted with witches as a church gained
- 21:10power, she says that the organization saw witches as
- 21:13their direct competition in gaining the hearts and minds of
- 21:17the people. Whoa, it's a war between priests
- 21:20and the witches. That's when the church began
- 21:23hunting, persecuting, torturing and killing witches in vast
- 21:26numbers, she explains. Witches honor the natural world.
- 21:31Shout out Frenchie. She's mentioned this having deep
- 21:33respect for plants and animals. Falling Star says affection
- 21:37between human and animal therefore began to be seen as
- 21:40diabolical or devilish. And the old lady with her cats
- 21:44became seen as a suspect. But so did the cats, and so did
- 21:47the cats. But it wasn't the only
- 21:50connection they fabricated between witches, cats and the
- 21:53devil that the early Christians feared.
- 21:55They also saw them both as threats.
- 21:57Cats, like the women accused of witchcraft, tend to exhibit a
- 22:00healthy disrespect of authority, she notes. history.com
- 22:04identifies Vox and Rama as one of the earliest written records
- 22:07linking Black Cats to the occult.
- 22:09The document described as a heretical group in Germany and
- 22:12included a black cat as part of its depiction of diabolical
- 22:15activity. Once an animal becomes
- 22:18associated with the devil in religious writing, that idea
- 22:21doesn't just stay on the page, it becomes part of the cultural
- 22:24imagination. So where does the whole black
- 22:27cat cross? My path gives me bad luck.
- 22:30Yeah. Being come from.
- 22:31Yeah, you're asking the tough questions.
- 22:32Yeah. That's what I really want to
- 22:34know after reading that. The basic idea, yes, although it
- 22:38developed through folklore rather than coming from one
- 22:40single rule it. Didn't come from the Pope.
- 22:41It didn't come from the Pope this time.
- 22:43If people genuinely believe that witches could transfer
- 22:45themselves into cats, or that witches could send supernatural
- 22:49animal companions to harm people, then encountering a
- 22:52strange black cat could have become an omen during the
- 22:56Renaissance. Some people apparently believe
- 22:58that a cat crossing their path could indicate that a witch had
- 23:01sent a familiar to cause harm. Oh, I see.
- 23:05The cat doesn't actually have to attack you or scratch you or
- 23:09interact with you, but the entire superstition is based on
- 23:12the direction in which the animal happened to walk.
- 23:16These people were really afraid. They're not our friends yet, but
- 23:20they were afraid. Oh my God, not my amigos.
- 23:23Not my amigos, but they were afraid so these fearful people
- 23:27could actually seek out a priest during that time for a blessing
- 23:30after encountering a black cat. OK, wait, wait.
- 23:33I have a theory. Go, go.
- 23:35The church was releasing Black Cats so people would then turn
- 23:40to the church to increase their numbers.
- 23:42And you know what? I bet they weren't charging, but
- 23:47they probably said oh please, anything for the church.
- 23:51War tactics. That's a great theory.
- 23:55I'm just saying, seems like a great business, Yeah, create the
- 23:59problem that you're offering the solution for.
- 24:03Yeah, in this case, they're going to go get blessed after
- 24:05coming across a black cat because they believe that
- 24:08they've now been cursed. So please absolve me of my
- 24:11curse, of my whatever was put on me.
- 24:13Pray for me. Clear.
- 24:15Cleanse me. Thank you.
- 24:16I'll be back. That's a happy customer right
- 24:19there. Because the superstition didn't
- 24:21just make Black Cats unpopular. Cats in general could become the
- 24:25targets. So now we're getting into
- 24:27something more, another historical moment that could
- 24:29have maybe changed, but let's keep going.
- 24:33I'm fearful that you're going to tell me that at one point they
- 24:35start hunting black. Cats, take a sip and let's
- 24:40continue, shall we? During the Middle Ages, cats
- 24:45were sometimes killed because of their association with evil.
- 24:49Oh, I spoke too soon. Crazy.
- 24:52Not a coincidence. Some people even blamed the cats
- 24:56for spreading the bubonic plague.
- 24:58No girls, the rats, the cats kill the rats.
- 25:02Just someone once again. Someone once again found the
- 25:07problem and they said let's make it worse because cats are the
- 25:11solution. No, I will be the solution.
- 25:13Come to the church, we'll pray for you.
- 25:16History.com describes the consequences as a particularly
- 25:19tragic irony, because reducing the number of cats also reduce
- 25:24the number of predators controlling rodent populations.
- 25:28I want to be careful with this part because the popular version
- 25:31of the story sometimes gets simplified into people killed
- 25:35cats, and that's what caused the Black Death.
- 25:37Cats were viewed through the lens of fear at exactly the same
- 25:40time Europe was dealing with a catastrophic disease.
- 25:44And when people don't understand the cause of something
- 25:46terrifying, they look for something to blame.
- 25:49Cats were the first invisible at that moment.
- 25:53Or it was the church this is. Reminding me it's eerily similar
- 25:58to what we're facing now with FDA and RFK and our food.
- 26:06I'm so sorry. That's just a really weird
- 26:07coincidence. I mean, you're making the
- 26:10problem worse by removing the things that make it better.
- 26:13Is that this concept of history repeating itself?
- 26:16I think right Maybe. Nothing has made me more fearful
- 26:19than history repeating itself because we should be learning.
- 26:24We should be. So why do we keep believing this
- 26:28stuff? Because people don't learn.
- 26:32The Carnegie Museum article highlights something important.
- 26:35The museum explains that researchers have suggested
- 26:38superstitions can give people a feeling of control over things
- 26:41that are otherwise unpredictable.
- 26:43Weather is a great example. You can't control weather
- 26:47whether the weather is, I'm kidding, whether it's going to
- 26:50rain. But you can create rituals or
- 26:52beliefs that make uncertainty feel a little bit more
- 26:54manageable. And that's not true anymore.
- 26:56Cloud seeding, look it up. That's so true.
- 27:00The article also discusses research suggesting that luck to
- 27:03base rituals can reduce anxiety and potentially improve
- 27:06performance in certain situations.
- 27:07What kind of rituals are in here?
- 27:09It's going to be luck based rituals that in a way makes a
- 27:13black cat superstition make a little bit more sense in my
- 27:15opinion. So imagine something bad happens
- 27:18after you see a black cat. You remember the cat.
- 27:21Now your brain has that connection.
- 27:23Black cat bad thing. The next time you see a black
- 27:26cat, you're already waiting for something to happen.
- 27:29And if nothing happens, you probably don't think much about
- 27:31it. But if you trip, you lose your
- 27:33keys or get into an argument that led to a terrible day.
- 27:37You remember the cat. Wow.
- 27:40That's how these things can reinforce themselves.
- 27:43The superstition doesn't necessarily need evidence every
- 27:45single time. It just needs a few memorable
- 27:48coincidences. You're.
- 27:49Caught. It's causation affectation.
- 27:52You're trying to connect A to B when there is no causation
- 27:56affectation. And when it doesn't happen,
- 27:58you're just like. You forget about it because
- 28:00there's no cause and effect of a cat that we know of.
- 28:04Unless. Unless.
- 28:05Unless so after all that, are Black Cats actually unlucky?
- 28:09Brian, where do you stand on that?
- 28:11I think Black Cats are some of the most beautiful cats to
- 28:14exist. So no, I would love a black cat
- 28:17to walk past me and I will respectfully try to pet it.
- 28:21Yes. So I and then I will deal with
- 28:25the repercussions of being allergic.
- 28:27There you go. But I did that to myself.
- 28:28Yeah, but it wasn't the cat's fault.
- 28:30No, it was just your my lack of self-control.
- 28:34It was your immune system. And that's not.
- 28:37Control. Either it's my histamines, I'm
- 28:39back at it again. I want a black cat so bad.
- 28:43So so so bad. Get a Baldwin.
- 28:48I'm down. So we took this animal that was
- 28:52once revered in ancient Egypt, connected it with gods and
- 28:55protection, eventually associated with magic and
- 28:58witchcraft, and then turned it into the symbol of the devil and
- 29:01bad luck. And even then, other cultures
- 29:03never brought that idea that black hats were inherently bad.
- 29:07The Welsh could see one and think good fortune was coming.
- 29:11Someone in Scotland or Japan could associate the animal with
- 29:14prosperity. Someone in medieval Europe could
- 29:17see the exact same cat and wonder of a witch had sent.
- 29:20To my life is ruined like. Dang it, now I have to go kill
- 29:23it. It's so sad.
- 29:25Not that a black cat might be carrying some supernatural
- 29:28curse, it's that humans have spent hundreds of years deciding
- 29:31what an ordinary animal is supposed to mean, and sometimes
- 29:35those beliefs have been powerful enough to hurt the animal
- 29:38itself. I'm also going to tie this back
- 29:40to the Lechusas cough cough cough.
- 29:43Once again related to witches. Like at that point I find that
- 29:46so fascinating. Like, why can't I become an
- 29:50animal? So the next time a black cat
- 29:52crosses your path, maybe don't worry about what kind of luck
- 29:55it's bringing. Just remember that somewhere in
- 29:58history somebody looked at that exact same animal and thought,
- 30:03I'm scared. That was so interesting.
- 30:07Yeah, friend. I did not know that the church
- 30:11was involved in this. I should have known.
- 30:13Church involves in self and everything.
- 30:16It's it's wild. I agree.
- 30:17I was not expecting that. The fact that it was a papal
- 30:20decree in 1233, like I just, it just doesn't seem.
- 30:24And those hold weight like that's, yeah, that's heavy.
- 30:29Yeah, I mean, we're talking about the Inquisition.
- 30:30Like, that's such a heavy, heavy, heavy time in dark,
- 30:37terrible dark. Yeah, yeah, friend.
- 30:40I had AI, had a lot of fun. Like I mentioned, this was a
- 30:42little bit different. I love learning about the lore
- 30:44now because it makes me want a black cat even more.
- 30:47Oh, we need to rewrite history. We need to reattribute good
- 30:51luck, good vibes to Black Cats. They are misrepresented in
- 30:55media. And they're so cute.
- 30:57They're just little, little black voids.
- 30:59They are. They just want to cuddle some of
- 31:02them. Some of them.
- 31:03I do agree that a lot of cats have their own temperament for
- 31:06sure. But so does every animal.
- 31:08Yeah, you're right. So does any animal.
- 31:11That goes for reptiles, canines, humans.
- 31:17Yeah, it's everyone. You just got to find the 1.
- 31:21And I am confident, I believe that the cat distribution system
- 31:26will bless US one day with a little black cat.
- 31:29OK, the US better be you and Bootsy because it's not blessing
- 31:32me. I'll be saying bless you because
- 31:34you'll be sneezing and stuff. Bless me.
- 31:38Get out of here. Get.
- 31:40Get. Yeah, friend, thank you for
- 31:42listening to my. Cat Talk.
- 31:44Oh, thank you for sharing. Is there anything that was
- 31:46haunting you this week? There was, and it's so funny
- 31:50that you brought out a cat story because I almost did a dog
- 31:56story. Is it the black shark?
- 31:59No, it was almost a little like mini in depth analysis of how
- 32:05black dogs are representative of like death and stuff in Mexican
- 32:11culture specifically and stuff like that.
- 32:14But I said no, I need to devote more time to that.
- 32:17He's I want to do that with more intent.
- 32:19He's having an aneurysm. So I was not haunted by that
- 32:21this week. OK, not.
- 32:23This week, I'm haunted by something that has existed in my
- 32:27reality for years. Whoa.
- 32:30It even has links to a piece of media that played a vital part
- 32:33in my sexual awakening. What?
- 32:37What do you know about Teen Wolf?
- 32:39Maybe both? I've watched the entire I think
- 32:45first three seasons. I stopped watching when Lydia
- 32:49became the banshee. The banshee I think which was
- 32:53like season 3 ish. Sure, Season 4.
- 32:56Ish. They all kind of merged together
- 32:57to me. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 32:58I did not know you watched. This is actually makes me really
- 33:02happy because you'll understand a good portion of my story
- 33:05hopefully. I'm automatically thinking of
- 33:07names like. Keep, keep thinking.
- 33:10Yeah, yeah, yeah. OK.
- 33:11I'm really excited now, OK. Cool.
- 33:15Well, Teen Wolf first premiered on MTV in the summer of 2011.
- 33:20It's still kind of related to dogs.
- 33:22It is. I saw the first episode and I
- 33:25was hooked. Dude, yeah, as soon as I saw my
- 33:28forever daddy Derek Hale. OK, I had I had other names in
- 33:32my mind, but OK, go ahead. No, literally.
- 33:35He was my first experience of witnessing like a troubled
- 33:38broody angsty beefcake of a man and I couldn't look back.
- 33:46Like SMAO. I'm so sweaty just thinking
- 33:49about it. For reference, I was 15 when
- 33:52this came out and very hormonal. At a ripe age of. 15 Finally had
- 33:57a really hormonal moment in my life.
- 33:59Derek Ale. Crazy.
- 34:03I was like obsessed obsessed dude.
- 34:04I had a Tumblr dedicated to the show.
- 34:07I wrote fan fiction. Amazing.
- 34:09I made, like, GIFs and photo edits before video edits were,
- 34:13like, a thing on TikTok. OK, Remember 2011 through 2000,
- 34:16like 1516, whenever the show was airing.
- 34:19Yeah. It was my first, like, big
- 34:21fandom experience. Wow.
- 34:23It was like, I had never watched anything as it aired and had
- 34:26access to the Internet at the same time.
- 34:28So there was always a lot of anticipation of, oh, my God, the
- 34:31cliffhanger. What's going to happen next
- 34:33week? Did you hear?
- 34:33That I did hear that it sounded like knocking, but.
- 34:35It sounded like clapping. But also clapping.
- 34:39Yeah, OK, weird. I didn't once again like burnt
- 34:43bottle Santo again today. Oh, nice.
- 34:45OK, OK. Anyways, the show, if you don't
- 34:52know, is about main character Scott McCall who gets a bit by
- 34:55werewolf as a teen, hence the name Teen Wolf.
- 34:59That's what it means. Yeah, dude, that's what it
- 35:01means, isn't it? Crazy.
- 35:02Wow, and it's all about him embracing his werewolf powers to
- 35:06save his friends and the town of Beacon Hills from all other evil
- 35:09monsters that are trying to take over because for some reason
- 35:13they love Beacon Hills. Something to do with the an
- 35:16ancient tree. Something like that.
- 35:18You find out later seasons. It's a beacon.
- 35:20It calls. Yeah, literally.
- 35:24What I love most about the show, aside from the shirtless fan
- 35:27service, was that they'd like pulled inspiration from
- 35:30different cryptids and paranormal beings for the bad
- 35:32guys. And the topic I'm covering today
- 35:35ended up playing a major role in the plot, and when I saw the
- 35:39name recently I was so shocked to know the connection.
- 35:43OK. This week I'm haunted by the
- 35:47Beast of Jevodon, a bloodthirsty, seemingly
- 35:51unkillable creature, a terrorized 18th century France,
- 35:55and was responsible for over 100 brutally gruesome deaths.
- 35:59Wow. Also what you call me at the
- 36:02beginning. The beast of Jeva Dong.
- 36:04What the fuck? What the hell you call it?
- 36:06Is the beast. No, you're you're, you're
- 36:07insulting me. Beast.
- 36:10OK, just based on the connection to Teen Wolf, what do you think
- 36:13this beast could be? I mean, some sort of like wolf,
- 36:17some sort of werewolf. That's my, that's my original.
- 36:23That's my first thought. I keep that in your mind,
- 36:25werewolf in case that changes. Werewolf, although I was the
- 36:28first one that introduced me to Teen Wolf.
- 36:30Really. Him of all people.
- 36:32And I think he finished watching the show I.
- 36:34Stopped after Derek Hale left. You're like I'm I'm.
- 36:37Good. Like no, my daddy's gone.
- 36:38I don't need to finish this. And you?
- 36:40Lost me damn. Back in 1764, it was only known
- 36:45as the Beast. The Beast allegedly mauled over
- 36:48100 villagers in the region of Gevardin, France Francais.
- 36:53You keep calling me names. I'm going to walk out of here.
- 36:55Also, Please note there's a lot of French names in here that I'm
- 36:58going to try my best to pronounce.
- 37:00Amazing. If you speak French and I
- 37:02pronounce it wrong, please give me grace.
- 37:04If he's cussing me out in French, please.
- 37:07Contact me Never. Never, never.
- 37:08So the first named attack happened over 262 years ago this
- 37:13summer. That's not too long ago,
- 37:15honestly. That was when 14 year old Jean
- 37:18Boulet was out alone in the field.
- 37:21Jean was a shepherdess and was out watching the family sheep.
- 37:23She never expected a massive 4 legged monster to charge at her
- 37:27out of the woods. By the time the attack was over,
- 37:29all her family found was a mangled corpse left in the dirt.
- 37:32So there was proof. Yep, that something had murdered
- 37:38Capital M murdered, mauled, maliciously ate this girl.
- 37:42Murder. While she was the first person
- 37:45killed, she wasn't the first one attacked.
- 37:48A few months prior, another woman had been out with her
- 37:50cattle when a similar beast charged at her.
- 37:52Luckily, the cattle defended her and they were able to scare it
- 37:55off. Whoa.
- 37:57She was the one who was able to share the first description of
- 37:59the beast, which was it's like a wolf, yet not a wolf.
- 38:04This reminds me of the Britney song.
- 38:06I'm not a girl, not yet a woman. Maybe it's something in between.
- 38:11Just like Brittany. I'm not a girl, not yet a woman.
- 38:14I'm not a wolf, not yet a beast. Yeah, yeah, but it sounds
- 38:18exactly the same. Probably inspired by.
- 38:20A third attack happened a few months later where another young
- 38:23woman had been killed by a four legged beast.
- 38:26What's the saying? Once a fluke, twice as a
- 38:28coincidence, third time is a pattern.
- 38:32Fool me once, shame on you. No, leave that behind.
- 38:36Well, we can't get fools again. Well, this was a pattern all
- 38:40right. A pattern that had no intention
- 38:43of stopping. Words spread like crazy.
- 38:47There's a wolf attacking whip own.
- 38:49Was it rude to do a French accent?
- 38:52No, it's like an English accent. OK, words spread like crazy.
- 38:55There's a wolf, I can't do it, attacking women and children.
- 38:58But it's not really a wolf, but it looks like 1 and everything
- 39:01is terrible. I would imagine so.
- 39:04The stories of the attacks were awful.
- 39:07Allegedly, it only targeted people's heads and necks,
- 39:11ripping them off from their bodies.
- 39:12This thing was vicious, and it really wanted everyone to know.
- 39:18Descriptions kind of varied. Some people said it was as big
- 39:20as a cow, others said it was as big as a horse.
- 39:23Most people agreed that it had a long tail, with some saying it
- 39:26had a tuft of hair at the end. It was brown with dark stripes
- 39:31on its back and massive teeth. It's like they mixed together
- 39:34the descriptions of a bunch of animals together with that tiny
- 39:38bit of description. Any guesses of what animal it
- 39:41might be? I mean, you kind of gave the
- 39:43description of, like, a hyena, a lion, a wolf.
- 39:48Yeah, just like a mix of everything.
- 39:51A Guinea pig. OK, eventually people who
- 39:55witnessed some of these attacks started saying that there was 2
- 39:58beasts. This thing was multiplying,
- 40:01procreating. What's worse than one
- 40:04unidentified beast? Two unidentified beasts.
- 40:08No, no, children actually play a really big part in the story.
- 40:14After dozens of murders, the French villagers were finally
- 40:16fed up. Some areas put bounties on the
- 40:19beast, offering rewards for anyone that managed to kill it.
- 40:22A few groups did eventually try to hunt it down.
- 40:25In one instance, a group of huntsmen caught wind of an
- 40:27attack near Chateau de la Bomb and sprung into action.
- 40:33They grabbed their weapons and they ran their butts over.
- 40:37They haunted it through the nearby woods when finally they
- 40:39cornered it into a clearing. At once, they all drew their
- 40:43guns and opened fire at the beast.
- 40:46The creature fell. The silence was probably
- 40:49deafening after all the gunshots, because they all just
- 40:53aimed. Emptied their freaking guns.
- 40:57Yeah. They held their breath as they
- 40:58began to approach the monster. However, it was not dead.
- 41:04The bullets didn't even Pierce its skin.
- 41:06The beast got up and dashed back into the woods, seemingly
- 41:09unharmed. That's when they started to
- 41:11think that the beast was not something of nature and could
- 41:13very possibly be indestructible. Wait, so I just imagined like
- 41:18this smart beast thing just like feigning like it died, Yeah,
- 41:24making it look like and then oh wait, that didn't do shit.
- 41:28Bye boom. And then taking off.
- 41:30Yeah, you shoot up this massive beast, you think it's dead and
- 41:33boom, it's back. It's kind of giving boss battle
- 41:36for sure, for sure. Like the video game boss has
- 41:38multiple lives like different stages of fighting in.
- 41:42Eldon Ring all over again. One vital encounter resulted in
- 41:46the intervention of the King of France at the time, King Louis
- 41:48the 15th. On January 12th, 1765, the beast
- 41:54came up on little old Jacques Portafaix.
- 41:57The 10 year old boy was hanging out with his group of friends,
- 41:59all ranging from 8 to 12 years old.
- 42:02Well, this little group of children practically became The
- 42:04Avengers of 18th century France, no?
- 42:07Way. Rose Chamacos or out in a field
- 42:10just playing amongst the cows when they were attacked by the
- 42:13Beast of Jevaodon. Instead of cowering in fear,
- 42:17these little rascals fought back.
- 42:20They grouped up against it using homemade weapons that they
- 42:23prepared to counter attack. They had them ready.
- 42:26Dude I have like a slow MO video of this playing in my head just
- 42:29like in a circle all backs to back holding their makeshift
- 42:33weapons just readied up. The stick of mud.
- 42:37Together, they ended up scaring it off, sending it back into the
- 42:40woods. They became local heroes, and
- 42:43news eventually reached King Louis the 15th.
- 42:45He sent them all money and he specifically paid for Jacques
- 42:49schooling as like an honor for leading this charge against the
- 42:52beast. Wait, I have a question.
- 42:54Yes. So did they manage to kill the
- 42:56beast? No.
- 42:57Did they just they just didn't die.
- 42:59They were able to fight it off. Wow, they survived.
- 43:02Like they were able to tell the tale.
- 43:04Gotcha. I think my brain was still
- 43:05playing that whole like little movie in my head where I didn't
- 43:07hear anything you said after that.
- 43:09Sorry. Loki, I think the king was kind
- 43:11of embarrassed that so many adults had failed to fight off
- 43:14the creature and it was a bunch of kids were able to fend it
- 43:18off. Immediately after this he ended
- 43:20up rounding up troops to finally deal with the beast once and for
- 43:23all. Like this had been terrorizing a
- 43:25whole area of France and they had been complaining to the king
- 43:29and he paid no attention to it for the longest time.
- 43:31Like no, you don't figure it out, someone will kill it.
- 43:34Group of kids are the only ones to do have survived an attack
- 43:37from the freaking beast. Wow.
- 43:42So he ended up sending out royal hunters into the area to kill
- 43:45the beast, but even then they had no luck.
- 43:48Another seven months passed and the creature was still at large.
- 43:52Wow, Jerry. If not the Kingsman, who do you
- 43:57think could kill this thing? The power of friendship, because
- 44:02apparently that's the only thing that has succeeded and
- 44:05prevailed. No, I think it would have to
- 44:08take more than your typical lead based weapons.
- 44:13I think we have to start looking at supernatural weaponry.
- 44:18Oh, I like that. Well, we've had men, we've had
- 44:23children. How about a woman?
- 44:26Oh yeah, for sure. Well, on August 11th, 1765,
- 44:32which is 261 years ago this month, Marie Jean Valet was
- 44:37crossing a bridge over the River Discus with her sister.
- 44:41The two were braver than most because by this time many people
- 44:44were afraid to be outside unless they were in large groups.
- 44:47But the sisters came prepared. Mary Jean happened to be
- 44:50travelling with a bayonet she had attached to a very long
- 44:53pole, so when the beast eventually snuck up on them, she
- 44:58was ready. She took this idea from the
- 45:00kids. She said I'm not going out there
- 45:02without my weapon. When it leaped towards her,
- 45:05aiming for her neck, she braced herself and pierced the beast
- 45:09with the bayonet. The beast recoiled in pain and
- 45:12ran away. Mary Jean Valet did the
- 45:15impossible. She hurt the creature, which
- 45:19meant it could be killed. Her heroic actions made her a
- 45:23local legend and she eventually became known as the Maid of Jeva
- 45:27Don. Nice.
- 45:29And that's the story that Teen Wolf pulls from.
- 45:32They have an episode called The Maid of Jeva Don where you find
- 45:35out that one of the main characters is related to her.
- 45:38Guess. Guess who?
- 45:40Alice. Yes, Allison.
- 45:41My. Allison, sorry.
- 45:43Wow. There's a whole family of
- 45:46werewolf hunters on the show whose lineage dates back to her.
- 45:51In the show's lore, she's the first werewolf hunter in
- 45:53history, and the Beast of Jala Dawn was the history's most
- 45:56powerful werewolf, and it becomes a villain in the show.
- 45:59Cool. I don't think I was there for
- 46:01that. I think that season 4, three or
- 46:05four, and then they managed to kill it.
- 46:07And then do you remember the Dread Doctors, those creepy guys
- 46:11in masks? That's when I started getting
- 46:13kind of scared. Teen Wolf I.
- 46:15Don't like this? Anymore.
- 46:16No, they were creepy. They had like gas masks on.
- 46:19But they start like kind of fucking with things and making
- 46:22their own monsters and they bring it back as like a chimera.
- 46:25Yeah, it was really cool. Months later, father and son
- 46:31hunters announced that they were on the hunt for the beast.
- 46:36The father claimed to have killed over 1200 wolves in his
- 46:39career and that the beast was no different.
- 46:43They died, no, but they were unsuccessful for sure.
- 46:47Next came Francois Antoine, the King's own gun bearer.
- 46:52I probably butchered that. He was sent in after the father
- 46:55and son announced their defeat. It was Francois who came across
- 46:59a giant wolf in September 1765 and he used his gunman skills to
- 47:03kill. It was that it was the Beast of
- 47:07Javadan finally defeated. No, this is like a But wait,
- 47:12there's more. Well, the king and villagers
- 47:14thought so. The wolf was presented to the
- 47:16Court of Versailles, who determined that the wolf was
- 47:18much larger than the breach should be normally.
- 47:21It eventually ended up getting taxidermied and kind of paraded
- 47:24around because this thing was massive.
- 47:26Whoa. Based on this, Francois was
- 47:29given the reward money and was celebrated as the person who had
- 47:32finally killed the beast. Real convenient that the King's
- 47:36gunman, yeah, was the one to finally defeat the beast and get
- 47:40the earnings. Also, didn't you say there was
- 47:42maybe 2? Oh, Jerry.
- 47:45Oh, so smart. Not even two months later, the
- 47:51attacks started up again. Remember how I mentioned that
- 47:54some people had seen two beasts? Oh, Jerry, you're so good at
- 47:57memorizing things. So.
- 47:58Smart. For 18 more months, the same
- 48:02area was terrorized once again and more than 30 people died
- 48:05from gruesome new attacks. He just killed his mate.
- 48:09I would imagine so. He was angry, but the king
- 48:12didn't believe them. He had already sent his men.
- 48:14He had already awarded them the bounty.
- 48:16Villagers must be exaggerating. Plus, he didn't want to be seen
- 48:19as a liar. He had already told the entire
- 48:21country that the beast had been dealt with.
- 48:23Sorry, got to deal with it on your own.
- 48:25So the villages in the area suffered alone.
- 48:29Typical. It wasn't until two years later
- 48:32that farmer Jean Chastel grew brave enough to hunt the
- 48:34remaining beast. He shot another large creature
- 48:37on June 19th, 1767, finally bringing an end to the
- 48:41massacres. So what was the Beast of
- 48:43Javanon? The Royal Court thought it was a
- 48:45large wolf. I mean, that's what the King's
- 48:47gunman brought in, right? Well, other locals didn't think
- 48:51so. There's a bunch of theories of
- 48:53what it could be. A wolf with a thirst for human
- 48:56blood is 1. But cryptozoologist think it
- 48:59could be some sort of hyena or a lion that escaped nearby
- 49:01enclosure. So you're right on the money.
- 49:05Some lean more supernatural, believing it was indeed some
- 49:08sort of man wolf hybrid or a creature that defied extinction,
- 49:12such as a dire wolf or bear dog. Yeah, on a Reddit thread by
- 49:17Remarkable Trip 1167, they claim that the beast could not be a
- 49:21lion or hyena, as these are tropical predators who cannot
- 49:24withstand the French winters. However, other people in the
- 49:28thread disagree. The top response is from user
- 49:31Chowgasm, who states that the weather in that area of France
- 49:34rarely reaches freezing temperatures.
- 49:37Most of the attacks were done in the summer or fall anyways.
- 49:40Yeah, it could have been a lion that moved to warmer climates
- 49:43during the winter months. Chowgasm.
- 49:46Hey, I'm not in charge of naming these people.
- 49:48That's their selfie expression. Good name.
- 49:52My favorite comment comes from a deleted account which says it
- 49:56was actually a weather bloon. Oh no, that's it, That's the one
- 50:03they won. Deleted user, you win.
- 50:07OK So what do you guys think? Was the beast of Java Don a
- 50:10wolf? Or maybe something worse?
- 50:13I could totally see it being a dire wolf like that would make a
- 50:15lot of sense, but who knows who knows?
- 50:20I, I love the I love the term crypto zoologist because it
- 50:23just, it seems so fun, you know, just.
- 50:26I think that should have been a career path for you, friend
- 50:29that. Would have been so fun.
- 50:30That would have been so cool. Imagine how much I did seven
- 50:35years in Mexico studying Lechusas.
- 50:38Yeah, like cryptozoologist. Yep.
- 50:41Like what's your business here? Cryptozoologist, Cryptozoology.
- 50:45Proceed. Dang, kind of.
- 50:48See credentials. It's a little handwritten name
- 50:50tag. It has the the what is it?
- 50:53The the the the freaking pants. The Nightcrawlers or Sacramento
- 50:59Night Crawlers or Sacramento something anyways.
- 51:03I don't know. It's it's the Mothman as a
- 51:05picture I. Don't know Mothman is was also a
- 51:07potential topic for the week. Interesting.
- 51:09So funny you bring that up. But yeah, wow, my money is it
- 51:13has to be, I don't know, a lion or something.
- 51:15Let me pull up pictures because yeah, I want to see some
- 51:18pictures. There was a lot of art and stuff
- 51:20where they painted it as it's described.
- 51:22So it does look like a very unique original animal with
- 51:27characteristics from lions, wolf, hyena.
- 51:30So maybe it was a weird hybrid of all of those combined.
- 51:34Yeah, I mean, even some of these, like this one right here,
- 51:38it says hyena, but that very much looks like some sort of
- 51:42like big cat. Yeah, the tail.
- 51:45That's so wild. Yeah, this one looks more of
- 51:48like a bear. Yeah, like hyena patterns.
- 51:52What if it was just like a mangy bear that like, who knows, grew
- 51:56a tail? We'll never know.
- 51:57That's so crazy. That's because that was 200 plus
- 52:00years ago and most everything was just like really not
- 52:04dramatized. But yeah, like dramatized
- 52:06retellings of like the attacks. Most of it was like first hand
- 52:10accounts, probably from far away because you don't want to be
- 52:12nearby when that thing is coming at your neck.
- 52:16Sounds like the black Shuck all over again.
- 52:18Right. But a little further South Down
- 52:20in France, in France is France more S France?
- 52:26Yeah, sure. Yeah, sure.
- 52:29I think, I think it was just a little puppy.
- 52:32I would have pet it, OK. I would have fought it versus I
- 52:36would have put him in a battle with the Black Shark.
- 52:38Wow, that would have been cool. What if they're cousins?
- 52:43Maybe there's a whole big breed of just big dog that we have yet
- 52:47to discover because they love to hide in the woods.
- 52:49Yeah. All right, y'all, if you're.
- 52:51Interested in the fanfic? Brian will be posting that on
- 52:53the website. I'll be pulling characters from
- 52:56history. And Teen Wolf.
- 52:58And Teen Wolf, it'll be King France the 5th, King France,
- 53:02it'll be King Louis of France the 15th.
- 53:04And Derek Hale fanfiction. There you go, perfect.
- 53:07And they're each one of them is a black shark.
- 53:09One of them is the beast. Jerry Ka Jerry's my co-author.
- 53:14He's my editor. I'm getting rights to that.
- 53:16He's my idea man. If I have the time this will get
- 53:21posted somewhere on the website. That's so why.
- 53:24Do it. Wow friend, thank you for that.
- 53:26That was so cool. I love this episode.
- 53:28Look at our animals like just running the episode today.
- 53:31Yeah, we had. I had no idea what you were
- 53:33talking about. I did tell Jerry that I was
- 53:35going to talk about a beast, but didn't go into specifics.
- 53:38Also, I might have just glanced over that message and like,
- 53:42something, just something. The wheel started turning.
- 53:45Yeah. Because I wasn't going to do
- 53:46Black Cats today. I was going to do something
- 53:48else. But then I just happened to
- 53:50think about the black cat. And then I searched it out and
- 53:53then, yeah, I just. I got my stuff.
- 53:56That was fun. Hope you all enjoyed.
- 53:58Before we get into the song recommendations, I do want to
- 54:02just have a moment of silence for an icon that passed this
- 54:08week. And yes, my song will be a
- 54:13recommendation for Miss Dolly Parton.
- 54:17Hope she rests in paradise. Just a a true loss.
- 54:21I have no words. An icon that really serve the
- 54:25people for I think A7 or 8 decades of music.
- 54:30Now she was 80 years old, but she has a legacy that will
- 54:34hopefully live on for forever. Absolutely.
- 54:38Beautiful person, beautiful soul.
- 54:40Yeah. Always did amazing things for
- 54:42her community. But communities at large, Big
- 54:45advocate for people of color, LGBT plus community and she has
- 54:51a nonprofit. I know we don't make money.
- 54:53I wish I did. But if for any reason you
- 54:55thought, oh hey, I want to give these guys some money, love
- 54:57their content. No, Please send a donation to
- 55:00the Imagination Library. Yeah, a wonderful program trying
- 55:03to get books to underprivileged kids.
- 55:05The first thing we did when we heard of the news was bust out
- 55:09the Dolly record. I would like to recommend the
- 55:12original version of I will always love you.
- 55:16We're both recommended I will always love you because that is
- 55:18just. Wow, Whitney Houston's version
- 55:21is outstanding. That woman could sing, but there
- 55:24is something just so authentic to Dolly's version.
- 55:30Please give it a listen if you've never heard it or for
- 55:33some reason did not know that that was the original version.
- 55:36All right, I think it might be working, man, but because I
- 55:38can't think of it and I don't have it in front of me, I'm
- 55:40going to recommend Tennessee Homesick Blues.
- 55:45Yeah, I did see the video of Orville Peck that Dulce showed
- 55:47me where he was. He received the news while he
- 55:49was playing live and he just had a little a moment.
- 55:54Yeah. No, I did not see that.
- 55:56No. And then the comments were like,
- 55:57has someone checked in on Trixie Mattel?
- 55:59Like it's just yeah, Oh my God, so many Yeah, like everything
- 56:02Dulce was telling me. I was like, they're so right.
- 56:03Like there's people currently that just.
- 56:06That was. Pull so much inspiration in her
- 56:09Global Icon. Yeah, I saw a video where AI
- 56:12think they're British. A theatre group was putting on a
- 56:17production of nine to five. Wow.
- 56:19And they did break it to the audience right before because
- 56:21they did not know like, hey, I know we're doing the show, but
- 56:24this was written by Dolly Parton.
- 56:26She unfortunately has passed away today.
- 56:28And the whole crowd was like, like gas.
- 56:31I could not believe it. I cannot believe it.
- 56:33It has been a a tragic week. Lost Hayden Panettiere last
- 56:38week, losing Dolly this week. It's been too much.
- 56:42They're taking the good white people.
- 56:44It's been a lot, and not to end the episode on a sad note, but
- 56:48this is a celebration of their life and their legacy.
- 56:53It's going to, it's going to live on and.
- 56:54It doesn't have to be sad, it could be a powerful moment of
- 56:57just recognition. We thank you for listening.
- 57:03Go listen to some Dolly today and we hope you enjoyed the
- 57:06episode. Yeah, I'm Brian.
- 57:08See you next week. I'm Brian.
- 57:11That's Jerry. And this is.
- 57:13Amigos a friend.
