Latest / The Monégasque Table / Spooky Halloween Glitter Drinks: Black and Purple Potions
Transcript
- Margaux: Every October, the same stampede. Amazon search data shows searches for edible glitter climbing past 75,000 a week as Halloween gets close. Everybody wants a potion drink. And most people are about to build it wrong. Dana: I'm one of them, apparently. I walked in planning a black cauldron punch, and you texted me — quote — "do not make the punch black." My spooky drink was under attack before I got my coat off. Margaux: Welcome to The Monégasque Table. Halloween is a few weeks out, the invitations are going out, and today we're building spooky glitter drinks that actually show up when the lights go down. Dana: And I get to defend the black punch. Margaux: You do. But here's the answer up front, because the countdown is running. A spooky glitter drink is 3 decisions. One — a clear base: sparkling lemonade, tonic, a clear soda, prosecco for the grown-ups. Two — a dark shade to do the spooky work: black, purple, or orange glitter, about 0.1 grams a glass. Three — add it right before the glass changes hands, so the swirl happens in front of your guests. Dark drink? No. Dark glitter in a clear drink? That's the potion. Dana: That sounds backwards, and I want to say so on the record. Halloween drinks are supposed to be black. Witches' brew. Poison in a goblet. If I hand a guest clear lemonade with sparkles in it, where exactly is the spooky? Margaux: The spooky is the movement. Sparkle Lab moment — may I? Dana: The lab may open. Margaux: Glitter doesn't glow. It reflects. These flakes run 50 to 500 microns — big enough to catch light and throw it back at you. But light has to reach them first. Pour a black punch, and the drink swallows every bit of light before it ever finds a flake. You paid for shimmer and served a glass of night. Dana: So in a black drink, the glitter's just... in there. Invisible. Doing nothing. Margaux: Sitting in the dark with nothing to do. Now flip it. Clear base, pinch of black glitter. The drink stays see-through, light pours in, and every dark flake becomes a little moving shadow. One swirl and it stops looking like a beverage. It looks like smoke trapped in a glass. Dana: "Smoke in a glass" is working on me, I'll admit it. But be honest about the color, because this is what I'd worry about in the store aisle. Black glitter in pale lemonade — does that read as a potion? Or does it read as a gray drink with flecks in it? Margaux: It reads as a potion if you respect the pinch. This stuff is mineral — mica-based, and almost insoluble in water — so it doesn't dissolve into the drink and tint it gray. The flakes stay flakes. One 0.1 gram pinch reads as drama. Three pinches reads as swamp water. Dana: Alright, my number complaint, because I brought one. The jar says a 10 gram jar is 100 servings. On paper, one jar runs my whole party twice. But nobody parties on paper. It's a dark room. One polite pinch won't read from across the table. People will double. I will double. Margaux: Then double — the jar's own serving guidance says you can, for a richer color. Here's what doubling actually costs. At $14.99 a jar, a single pinch is about 15 cents a glass. Doubled, about 30 cents. Run 50 potions at full drama and you've spent the price of a bag of fun-size candy on the thing everyone photographs. Dana: Huh. I came in swinging at that number and the math just absorbed the punch. Margaux: (laughs) The math has been lifting weights all season. Dana: Fine. Then give me the palette, because I know Halloween has one and I don't want to guess at the shelf. Margaux: It does, and it's not a guess — every fall we watch the same 4 shades leave together: orange, purple, black, and green. Same carts, with pumpkin molds and a skull cake pan riding along. Orange plus purple plus black plus green is the Halloween kit. Dana: So which jar does which job? Margaux: Midnight Black is the smoke — the haunted pour, the one you build the potion around. Lavender Fields is the witch's brew — purple reads bright even in low light, and it's the one the kids point at. Orange Beach is the pumpkin — that one wants a fizzy base, so the bubbles keep the orange climbing. And if your theme runs to swamp and slime, the green lane is right there too. Dana: Okay, but now the use-case fight, because I've been sitting on this one. Here's what's actually on a Halloween drinks table where I live. Hot apple cider — every single year. Hot chocolate for the kids. Both cloudy. Both opaque. Your clear-base rule just disqualified the 2 most Halloween drinks in America. Margaux: That's the round you win, and I won't pretend otherwise. Glitter in cider is money poured into fog — the reviewer wisdom across this whole category says it plainly: it works best with clear drinks. So the honest play is a split table. The cider and the cocoa stay exactly as they are. You add one clear showpiece — a sparkling lemonade potion, a tonic brew — and let that be the centerpiece. Dana: The cider stays. Noted, and celebrated. Margaux: Now the part people skip — the reveal. Lights low. One candle next to the pitcher, or a string of little orange bulbs, because the flakes need something to catch. Pinch on the surface, one slow stir in front of everyone, and the whole drink starts to move like something woke up inside it. The photo people keep isn't the costumes. It's the kid in the vampire cape, nose an inch from the glass, watching the smoke turn. Dana: And bubbles buy me time, right? A fizzy base keeps the show running on its own. Margaux: Bubbles are free labor. Anything carbonated stirs itself — flakes ride the bubbles up, drift down, ride again. In a still drink, the show settles sooner, so the order is pour, pinch, swirl, serve. The glitter's best 10 seconds should be the 10 seconds the glass lands in someone's hand. Dana: Who should skip it? Every episode, somebody should. Margaux: Two groups tonight. If your whole menu is opaque and staying that way — cider, cocoa, a cream punch, a cola-dark brew — skip the drink glitter. It can't beat physics, and you'd be sprinkling money into drinks that hide it; put that budget into the treats table instead. And if what you're really after is glow — light-up, glow-in-the-dark drinks — that's not this product. Glitter reflects light. It doesn't make any. Dana: Dana's Scorecard. I walked in with a black cauldron punch and a lot of confidence. Where I landed: the potion effect is real, but it runs backwards from what I thought — clear drink, dark glitter, never dark drink. The palette is 4 colors — orange, purple, black, green — and every jar has one job. The dose is a pinch — 0.1 grams, doubled if the room is dim — added when you serve, not before. And what I'm keeping: my cider stays glitter-free, and I'm still making the black punch. It just gets to be scenery now instead of the star. Margaux: That's a better party than the one you walked in with. One footnote if you're stocking the cart — the 3 Halloween shades, Midnight Black, Lavender Fields, and Orange Beach, are MONÉGASQUE 10 gram drink glitters, on Amazon with the rest of the palette. After over 400,000 orders across the US, Canada, and the UK, the jars sit at 4.6 stars — the crowd has run this party before you. Dana: One thing I still need before the big night, though. Once I pour the showpiece and the room is watching — how long does drink glitter actually stay visible in the glass? Because my parties run long. Margaux: That's next week's question — we'll time the sparkle out loud. Quick note before we go — this show is produced by the team at Monégasque, with AI-crafted hosts, and every number you heard was checked by humans against the documents. See you at the table.
